- 0:07Speaker 1: And we're joined by US Congresswimman Cat Camick, Florida's third district, Cat, how.
- 0:11Speaker 2: You doing, good morning? Sorry for the delay, any mom
- 0:15Speaker 2: or dad and the kneborn sings. You know. It is unpredictable.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Absolutely, it is what's Thanksgiving shaping up to look like
- 0:24Speaker 1: you know.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Again, having having the baby makes it real easy for us,
- 0:29Speaker 2: Like we bring the plates or a dessert. We are
- 0:34Speaker 2: not doing the turkey, we are not doing the sides.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We are for keeping it.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Simple, making making the run of publics, grabbing the pecan
- 0:42Speaker 1: or the pumpkin pie and head nine.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yes, yes, but I will say I will say for
- 0:48Speaker 2: our family Thanksgiving while there is pie. Everyone seems we
- 0:53Speaker 2: tend to gravitate towards like the dumb cake or like
- 0:56Speaker 2: I do a total sheet app app cobbler in the crockpot,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and that to me is the easiest thing in the world.
- 1:04Speaker 1: There you go. Crock blocks are a thing of beauty.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Cas gets there. How frustrated should Americans be by what
- 1:12Speaker 1: follows the shutdown ending and the fact that we are
- 1:16Speaker 1: we're going to be looking at this again in January.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I would say frustration absolutely, But also we should be
- 1:23Speaker 2: constantly optimistic and use that to push members to get
- 1:28Speaker 2: the appropriation bills done. So just recap for everybody listening.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You got twelve appropriation bills. You have to pass them
- 1:38Speaker 2: out of the Committee of Jurisdiction as an authorizer, get
- 1:42Speaker 2: them to the appropriators. Appropriators pass them out, We then
- 1:46Speaker 2: vote them on the floor of the House. We're representative,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and we could come to the Senate and then we
- 1:51Speaker 2: conference them. That hasn't been done in thirty years, and
- 1:54Speaker 2: so that's where you get all these crs and the
- 1:56Speaker 2: omnibuses coming from. For the first time, we actually the
- 2:00Speaker 2: House and a Senate. We agreed on three of the
- 2:03Speaker 2: twelve in the reopening of the government, So that is
- 2:06Speaker 2: a sign of hope. Last night, I was in a
- 2:08Speaker 2: meeting with about forty five of my colleagues and they
- 2:12Speaker 2: were saying, listen, we're ready to rock and roll. We're
- 2:14Speaker 2: gonna get all of our appropriations done. The scary part
- 2:17Speaker 2: is the Senate hasn't even taken up a bill or
- 2:21Speaker 2: we're on their side on many of these. So basically
- 2:24Speaker 2: it's going to be the House leading and we the
- 2:26Speaker 2: people have to keep the pressure on the House and
- 2:28Speaker 2: the Senate, but mostly on the Senate, because they're just
- 2:30Speaker 2: going to drag their feet and then they'll stick us
- 2:32Speaker 2: with another omnibus. And I don't want to do that,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and so I think it's important that we stay engaged
- 2:38Speaker 2: on this and be pushing for a full blown appropriation
- 2:42Speaker 2: season to take place by January thirtieth.
- 2:44Speaker 1: What would happen if the House just dug in its
- 2:47Speaker 1: heels and said to the Senate, just like we didn't
- 2:52Speaker 1: budge on Obamacare getting subsidized any more than it already is,
- 2:57Speaker 1: we're not budget on this. It's time for us to
- 3:00Speaker 1: do a proper set of appropriations. Until you do them,
- 3:04Speaker 1: we're not moving.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I think you would see a lot of the same
- 3:08Speaker 2: kind of gnashing of teeth that you saw in the
- 3:11Speaker 2: shutdown of you know, you had senators coming out of
- 3:14Speaker 2: the woodwork being like, well, but what if we did
- 3:16Speaker 2: a three year And I can tell you from my standpoint.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I was texting my Senate colleague saying, I will be
- 3:21Speaker 2: an absolute hard no on anything that involves keeping Obamacare
- 3:27Speaker 2: in place. It is the Unaffordable Care Act, it is
- 3:29Speaker 2: a broken system. Throwing money at it does not fix it.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And in the House we only have two votes to lose.
- 3:37Speaker 2: They can't tinker with our margins, and so they know
- 3:40Speaker 2: like they're basically unnoticed. And this, this, I think is
- 3:42Speaker 2: going to be the key going into not only the appropriations,
- 3:45Speaker 2: but then addressing the broken healthcare system. The House has
- 3:50Speaker 2: to lead on this because the Senate, the Senate just
- 3:52Speaker 2: they don't have the capability to lead in this space.
- 3:56Speaker 2: We're the ones with the tight margins. So I think
- 4:00Speaker 2: I think the message has been sent and.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Received inappropriations help those of us that may not fully
- 4:05Speaker 1: understand the process. And the Senate do they have to
- 4:07Speaker 1: get to sixty.
- 4:09Speaker 2: They would have to get to sixty in order to
- 4:13Speaker 2: if we have the filibuster in place. And you know,
- 4:16Speaker 2: we've heard that Trump and others have President Trump and
- 4:18Speaker 2: others have said, you know, it's do away with the filibuster.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I am torn on this because it was designed specifically
- 4:28Speaker 2: to avoid rash decisions, but we've also seen where it
- 4:31Speaker 2: can be used to obstruct. And we know full well
- 4:34Speaker 2: that not a matter of if, but when, Because the power,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, it swings back and forth all the time. Eventually, Democrats,
- 4:43Speaker 2: some point down the road, many years from now, will
- 4:45Speaker 2: be in charge and they will make Puerto Rico estate,
- 4:48Speaker 2: they will make DC estate, they will pack the Supreme Court,
- 4:52Speaker 2: they will do all the things. And that's why abolishing
- 4:54Speaker 2: the filibuster is very dangerous at times. But we look
- 4:59Speaker 2: at it say, well, hey, we need to get our
- 5:02Speaker 2: election integrity measures through, we need to get our budget
- 5:05Speaker 2: on track, we need to reduce the size and scope
- 5:08Speaker 2: of spending. We've got to fix all these things. And
- 5:10Speaker 2: if we can't get seven Democrats to join with us
- 5:14Speaker 2: in that, then we're going to have to make decisions.
- 5:16Speaker 2: And so that's where that sixty vote threshold versus a
- 5:20Speaker 2: simple majority is kind of the key.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Right now, joining us for one more segment here, busy
- 5:35Speaker 1: member of Congress, busy mom, busy wife, and with us
- 5:41Speaker 1: here on the morning show, Kat Camick, congress woman, tell
- 5:44Speaker 1: me this what can be done to you talked about
- 5:48Speaker 1: the unaffordable Obamacare. What can be done to start to
- 5:53Speaker 1: move the needle in the other direction to get a
- 5:56Speaker 1: handle on healthcare in this country.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Oh, I don't think we have enough segments to go
- 6:01Speaker 2: through it all. But right, I mean, obviously it has
- 6:05Speaker 2: been proven. We said it back when Obamacare came into existence.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You know, when you hurt from Nancy Pelosi herself. You
- 6:11Speaker 2: have to pass it to see what's in it. They claimed,
- 6:15Speaker 2: you know, if you like your doctor, you can keep them.
- 6:17Speaker 2: It was supposed to drive down costs. We know all
- 6:19Speaker 2: that to be completely false. It was a lie, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: we knew it then. It's been proven today. So this
- 6:28Speaker 2: notion of we're going to send four hundred billion dollars
- 6:30Speaker 2: to insurance companies, No, that's not going to fix the problem,
- 6:34Speaker 2: especially when people are finding that there's less access, less
- 6:39Speaker 2: opportunities to get with a specialist or a doctor, and
- 6:42Speaker 2: nine times out of ten you've got insurance companies making
- 6:45Speaker 2: medical decisions for you, basically going around your doctor saying, sorry, doc,
- 6:50Speaker 2: we're not going to do that. We're going to recommend this,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and we're only going to pay for that. And that's
- 6:55Speaker 2: just wrong. So we need to get back to a
- 6:57Speaker 2: place of a mindset that is preventative not maintenance. First
- 7:03Speaker 2: and foremost, we need to acknowledge that the system in
- 7:05Speaker 2: place is a sick care system, not a healthcare system.
- 7:09Speaker 2: We need to put the decision making capability back in
- 7:12Speaker 2: the hands of doctors and patients, not insurance companies. I
- 7:15Speaker 2: would love to see us get rid of the in
- 7:17Speaker 2: network versus out of network. I think we should expand HSAS,
- 7:21Speaker 2: increased choice, get the price transparency back into it, because
- 7:29Speaker 2: if people are actually seeing what everything is costing, then
- 7:32Speaker 2: it puts these companies on notice, like, oh, maybe you
- 7:35Speaker 2: can't charge one hundred and forty five dollars for an aspirin.
- 7:39Speaker 2: You know. It's things like that. I think competition is
- 7:42Speaker 2: the way to go. There's a number of things that
- 7:46Speaker 2: we're working on right now. In fact, we're working with
- 7:48Speaker 2: the White House on an expansion of HSAS that anyone
- 7:54Speaker 2: who needs that that help to cover a plan would
- 7:57Speaker 2: go directly to the consumer rather than to the insurance companies.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And that's something that we're looking at, and some cost
- 8:03Speaker 2: reduction savings element. There's so much we could do, but
- 8:08Speaker 2: it's clear that the system is broken. We have to
- 8:11Speaker 2: address maternal health deserts. Under Biden, thirty eight percent increase
- 8:17Speaker 2: of maternal health deserts across America, meaning women have to
- 8:21Speaker 2: drive hours and hours and hours to see an ob
- 8:24Speaker 2: or a gynecologist. I mean, heck, in our area, if
- 8:26Speaker 2: you're in Valdosta or Lake City, you got to drive
- 8:29Speaker 2: to Gainesville to find an ob that can deliver your baby,
- 8:35Speaker 2: it's just stuff like that. It's common sense and putting
- 8:40Speaker 2: people back in the driver's seat and taking the beer
- 8:42Speaker 2: crafts out of it. That's what we're aiming for. And
- 8:44Speaker 2: there's going to be a lot of proposals here in
- 8:46Speaker 2: the next few weeks and months, and we're excited to
- 8:48Speaker 2: be a part of that conversation.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Kat does tort reform fall into this, Is that a
- 8:53Speaker 1: federal issue or is tort reform need to be left
- 8:55Speaker 1: to states?
- 8:57Speaker 2: You know, everyone has always talked about tort reform as
- 8:59Speaker 2: part of it, and it is incredibly important, right, but
- 9:04Speaker 2: we have found that typically when the states are leaving
- 9:07Speaker 2: the charge on tor reform, and in Florida we've done
- 9:09Speaker 2: that a few years ago, we need to make another
- 9:11Speaker 2: round at it because it affects all of the insurance elements,
- 9:15Speaker 2: absolutely the home insurance to the car insurance, and in
- 9:18Speaker 2: Florida we have been clamoring for relief. And I can
- 9:22Speaker 2: tell you I have talked to my state representatives and said,
- 9:25Speaker 2: you guys got to do something. This is out of control.
- 9:28Speaker 2: That is something that typically I think is best left
- 9:31Speaker 2: at the states because that also will help foster competition
- 9:34Speaker 2: and driving costs lower across the country. But there's elements though,
- 9:37Speaker 2: certainly regulatory reform. You and I have talked about that.
- 9:41Speaker 2: That's my passion is really taking on the red tape
- 9:45Speaker 2: and the regulatory bureaucrats that are driving costs up everywhere.
- 9:50Speaker 2: That's a huge part of it, for sure.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Kat, thanks for the time. I appreciate you letting us
- 9:54Speaker 1: break into mom duty and congresswoman duty and husband and
- 9:58Speaker 1: wife duty and all that. But hey, have a great
- 10:01Speaker 1: Thanksgiving and don't get bullied into anything beyond the dessert.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I appreciate it. You have a good one and Thanksgiving.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Happy Thanksgiving to you too,
