- 0:35Should I do a dramatic intro?
- 0:36All right.
- 0:37All right.
- 0:37We're back in 1981 and a group of friends raced their high powered cars up and down,
- 0:42a dangerous and deadly mountain road, known as Mulholland Drive to see who can
- 0:46claim the title of King of the Mountain.
- 0:49Yeah.
- 0:52Wait, I already saw this Skull, silver Dream racer.
- 0:54Guys, if you haven't seen Silver Dream Racer, if you've seen this movie, you've
- 0:58seen Silver Dream Racer, just motorcycles.
- 1:01So this is Tanya's recommendation.
- 1:03Ooh.
- 1:04And I'm so happy that we are literally picking up exactly
- 1:08where we left off the last time.
- 1:09We've got big hair and leather jackets and music montages and everything that the
- 1:14last Chase was missing is in this movie.
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:17So much in this movie, I'm like, oh, this had to been made like 1974 or right.
- 1:21Something.
- 1:21Oh, oh.
- 1:2281. Really.
- 1:23Alright.
- 1:24Yeah guys, we gotta go around the room and nobody knows who they're
- 1:26even listening to right now.
- 1:27Well, I'm Steve.
- 1:28And I'm Izzy.

- 1:43Andrea, welcome.
- 1:45Well, don't forget Brad's here too.
- 1:46Hey Brad.
- 1:47Oh, and Brad's iPhone.
- 1:48That's right.
- 1:48Sorry.
- 1:49He doesn't have his picture on.
- 1:51I'm sorry, Brad, you all don't have your pictures on.
- 1:52So there you go.
- 1:53I believe that's called Quid pro quo.
- 1:57Yes.
- 1:57Tit for tit.
- 1:58So we only have six ho so we'll be able to get all of our funny lines in.
- 2:01It's gonna be great.
- 2:02There you go.
- 2:03But yeah, 1980 one's King of the Mountain.
- 2:05So is this everybody's first time watching this movie?
- 2:07Yes.
- 2:08Yes.
- 2:08Yes.
- 2:09Maybe Tanya.
- 2:09I don't know.
- 2:09Tanya.
- 2:09Tanya.
- 2:10No, I had never seen it.
- 2:12Okay.
- 2:12Okay.
- 2:12I had not seen it.
- 2:13I found it.
- 2:14Well, yeah, we, uh, we found out some interesting stuff about this movie.
- 2:17Looking into it though.
- 2:18Oh boy.
- 2:18Before we get too deep into this first time, watch for all of us.
- 2:21I don't know about you guys.
- 2:22I'm a little thirsty.
- 2:23I'm sober.
- 2:24I need to fix that.
- 2:25Yeah, right.
- 2:26Well, we have from Sockeye Brewing in Boise, Idaho.
- 2:30Dagger Falls.
- 2:31IPA 6.5% out call by volume and 100 IBUs.
- 2:36Woo-hoo.
- 2:3712 ounce canned has a beautiful salmon on the front.
- 2:40Yeah.
- 2:41I believe it was sockeye salmon.
- 2:42That was, I mean it sure as hell.
- 2:43Better me.
- 2:44Sockeye brewing my dog.
- 2:45That was a chum or luskin king.
- 2:49Oh, well, weird.
- 2:50Uh, my top.
- 2:52Top.
- 2:53Nice.
- 2:53Oh look.
- 2:53My top.
- 2:55My top.
- 2:55Everybody take your tops off.
- 2:57Woo.
- 2:57You don't wanna see that?
- 2:58Mm-hmm.
- 3:00Oh man.
- 3:01Happy beer.
- 3:01Very pine forward.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:03Very, uh, piny and, uh, little mossy to it.
- 3:06Like a little earthy.
- 3:07Little earthy.
- 3:07Yeah.
- 3:08And almost has a little bit of Metallica on the back end.
- 3:10Not like it tastes rusty, but like, got like an irony.
- 3:13Shitness to it must be all the blood from the salmons.
- 3:15Maybe, maybe a hint of Mercury.
- 3:17Who knows?
- 3:17Yummy.
- 3:18Mm-hmm.
- 3:18It's actually very good.
- 3:19It's an aggressive beer though.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:21Definitely.
- 3:22Like after about two of these, you'd be like, all right, I
- 3:24gotta switch up to something.
- 3:25More water like.
- 3:26Any guys drinking anything?
- 3:27I was gonna say, speaking of water, three guesses with the rest of
- 3:30the GTM crew is drinking tonight.
- 3:31But in honor of recent summer vacation adventures, I've got a Negroni.
- 3:36This stuff has got the same proof as gasoline and it's fantastic.
- 3:40Google translating what Negroni translates to?
- 3:44No, mostly compar.
- 3:46Oh, thank God.
- 3:46I was close.
- 3:48I was way off.
- 3:51Everybody else is drinking water fresh from their Well, if I remember correctly.
- 3:55That is correct.
- 3:56Dan gets it from the crick.
- 3:57350 feet below your house or whatever.
- 3:59There you go.
- 4:00Hi.
- 4:00My.
- 4:01I remember about Mike.
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:03And all his Bronco twos.
- 4:07That was a below the waist hit right there.
- 4:08That's not going.
- 4:11So, Steve, before you introduce the movie and the cast and whatever, I
- 4:15wanna just talk about the opening.
- 4:17Just the opening for a moment.
- 4:19Okay.
- 4:19The music and the score, it sort of sets the tone for this film and the cast,
- 4:23the characters that are part of it.
- 4:25Did anybody else get the Rockford files vibe from the opening of this movie?
- 4:29There's a little bit of that in here.
- 4:32All I remember from the opening, the first two scenes, I guess, him
- 4:36driving up and down the road and then like the, the Camaro trying
- 4:39to race him, and he's like, no dog.
- 4:42The songs just did not fit with what I was watching on the screen.
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:46But it felt like you all mentioned like this movie was clearly made in
- 4:49the seventies and it clearly was not the opening music Rockford files.
- 4:53Well, I never watched Rockford files, so you know, I'm out there.
- 4:56But for those first two like big scenes, I'm like, this does not fit at all.
- 5:01I watched this movie on a layover in Detroit 'cause I had that much time
- 5:05to kill and it was free on Voodoo.
- 5:06I related to it because I've driven Mulholland Drive and I
- 5:10did it with a buddy of mine.
- 5:11So shout out to Paul Willam Osky, who lives in la.
- 5:13We did it in his Porsche, also Silver, like the whoa movie.
- 5:16Whoa, whoa.
- 5:17Yeah, yeah.
- 5:18I mean, calm down.
- 5:19So immediately I was relating to this.
- 5:21I was like, oh, this is cool, this is cool.
- 5:23But I talk about that opening because that's where they're
- 5:26introducing the characters to you.
- 5:27It's that got that late seventies, early eighties, we're rolling the
- 5:30credits while the guy's driving down the road, just like the Rockford files.
- 5:34So I was sort of like, this is the moment where Harry Hamlin.
- 5:38Dennis Hopper, and you know, and Steve, you'll carry the list of the rest
- 5:41of the stars that are in this movie.
- 5:43But I was just like, what am I in for?
- 5:45Am I in for a treat or am I in for disappointment?
- 5:47Well, the disappointment for me was like, during that whole thing,
- 5:50you, you always got the narration stuff going, the helicopter shots.
- 5:52I don't know if they just have it on like some sort of spiral thing
- 5:56going like, I was getting car sick.
- 5:58Just watching.
- 5:59Yeah.
- 6:00It was like circling, circling, you know, windy roads.
- 6:03Yeah.
- 6:03And kind of keep along with that.
- 6:04It's like.
- 6:06But yes, 1980 one's King of the Mountain from Director Noel Sek, who see Steve.
- 6:12Oh, I'm glad you asked.
- 6:13Over 40 credits, including, um, best Friends Las Vegas, lady Dreamer,
- 6:19not to be confused with Silver Tree Racer, we might talk about later.
- 6:21What, uh, this.
- 6:22And then tv, movies like Roman Holiday, summer Fantasy Without a Kiss.
- 6:27Goodbye.
- 6:27Born Too Soon.
- 6:29And guys, what I've instantly added to our, uh, watch list tornado 1996.
- 6:35Ooh.
- 6:35Basically it looks like the TV Ripoff of Twister.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:39But, but it stars Bruce Campbell and Ernie Hudson.
- 6:41Oh, man.
- 6:42You said Bruce Campbell.
- 6:43I'm in, yeah.
- 6:43Right.
- 6:44Hudson.
- 6:44Sold.
- 6:45And then he also followed that up with What kind of mother are you?
- 6:48Right.
- 6:48And three episodes of Charmed.
- 6:51Oh, but the writing for this, oh my gosh.
- 6:53This is based on an article by David Barry.
- 6:56Ooh.
- 6:56Just like the Fast and Furious universe, just like the Fast and Furious universe.
- 7:00That's what I was hoping for going to this movie.
- 7:01That was my expectation.
- 7:03A fast and Furious or higher, I mean, the entire script is in two loose leaf pages.
- 7:08I mean, there's not a lot of dialogue.
- 7:10Yeah, there's not a lot.
- 7:11But yeah, basically the David Berry who wrote the article did that.
- 7:14He's the editor of 2000 Five's Transamerica Killer.
- 7:17AKA Switch Killer.
- 7:19Okay.
- 7:19Ooh, it's only credits on IMDB.
- 7:21Wonder if it's even the same person, honestly.
- 7:23Oh, but gosh, the writer, Lee Chapman.
- 7:27Who's she?
- 7:28Who's she?
- 7:28Whoa.
- 7:29Lady writer.
- 7:30Lady writer.
- 7:31I know.
- 7:32For this movie, that's actually kind of surprising.
- 7:34I mean, it is.
- 7:35Uh, yeah.
- 7:35Episodes of Wild Wild West.
- 7:37My favorite Martian truck Turner.
- 7:39Oh, you guys know Truck Turner, right?
- 7:41Isaac Hayes.
- 7:42Seventies Blaxploitation.
- 7:44Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:44Guaranteed.
- 7:4510 out 10.
- 7:46And then what?
- 7:47I'm sure you guys are familiar with Dirty Mary.
- 7:49Crazy Larry.
- 7:50I've heard of that.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:51Oh, it's a car.
- 7:52Nut one.
- 7:53You'll love it.
- 7:53Okay.
- 7:54Steel?
- 7:54No, not the Shaq movie.
- 7:55The one with Lee Majors.
- 7:56Okay.
- 7:57Octagon This and of course, two episodes of Walker Texas Ranger.
- 8:02If you had only said Rockford Viles.
- 8:03I know, right?
- 8:04And the other writer, HR Christian, black Mama, white Mama.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:09Active Vengeance.
- 8:10It's a rape revenge movie from the seventies and this, that's it.
- 8:13Wow.
- 8:14Three and out of the park.
- 8:15Let's talk about the cast.
- 8:17Oh my gosh.
- 8:17Harry Hamlin as Steve, the greatest name in history.
- 8:22Harry Hamlin himself.
- 8:23That's right.
- 8:24Who's he?
- 8:25Is he not a freaking G Cliff?
- 8:26Yeah, I had to look it up too.
- 8:27He's Perseus and Clash of The Titans.
- 8:29Yep.
- 8:29Yay.
- 8:30105 episodes of LA Law.
- 8:3215 of madman.
- 8:3316 of Mayfair Witches.
- 8:36I have never had heard of Harry Hamlin.
- 8:38No.
- 8:39Well, you guys know everything about everything.
- 8:40You don't know who Harry Amlin is?
- 8:42No.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:43He must be a TV actor.
- 8:44No.
- 8:45We only watch good movies.
- 8:48I only watch The Real Clash of The Titans with Liam Nees.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52He's also very famously the husband of a very famous actress, or at
- 8:57least she was back in the day.
- 8:59Ooh, she, well, Lisa Rena, right?
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:02Who?
- 9:02Who?
- 9:02He was married to Lisa Rena.
- 9:04Oh my God.
- 9:05He's still married to Lisa.
- 9:06They're still married.
- 9:06Oh, I know Lisa Rena.
- 9:07Okay.
- 9:08The one with the big lip again, the TV star.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11From Melrose Place, the big Lip TV star that pops up.
- 9:15Yeah.
- 9:15Melrose Place, days of our live.
- 9:17Yeah.
- 9:18Gee, no wonder.
- 9:19I don't know who either of them really are.
- 9:21Well, she was a model too, right?
- 9:22Yeah.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24Super into women's fashion and modeling, by the way.
- 9:26Oh, oh, totally, totally.
- 9:27All the way in.
- 9:28Have you heard of Cindy Crawford and the other who, I don't
- 9:31even know the other name.
- 9:32Kathy Ireland as an owner of Alien from LA starring Kathy Ireland.
- 9:36Yes, I am familiar with Cindy Crawford as well.
- 9:38Okay, so you have heard of female models before.
- 9:41I am familiar with Kathy Ireland due to Mr. S Cedar, three thousand's.
- 9:44Crow being obsessed with her.
- 9:46There you go.
- 9:48And Pepsi commercials in the nineties.
- 9:49Oh, that's Cindy Craw retainer.
- 9:51Necessary roughness.
- 9:52There we go.
- 9:52That's the one I'm thinking of.
- 9:53The guy's, Dan Haggerty's in this fucking movie as Rick.
- 9:56Who's he seeing for a scene or two?
- 9:57Is that the guy that looks like Barry Gibb?
- 9:59Yeah, he's Grizzly Adams.
- 10:00Maybe you've heard of him.
- 10:02I kept writing down.
- 10:02Barry Gibbs said this and Barry Gibbs said that.
- 10:05From the beaches, right?
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:08Uh, you might also know Dan Haggerty from one of the greatest
- 10:10movies ever made Mine Trap.
- 10:12AKA Danger USA.
- 10:14Oh shit.
- 10:15Yeah.
- 10:16They're like, who?
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:17Who else we got in this?
- 10:18We got, uh.
- 10:19Joseph Bottoms as buddy.
- 10:21Who's he?
- 10:22Steve, aside from being a bottom, let's see.
- 10:25Uh, using in Black Hole.
- 10:26Ooh.
- 10:2722 episodes of the net.
- 10:29You're telling me Joseph Bottoms is in black hole?
- 10:31Mm-hmm.
- 10:32Okay.
- 10:33Right.
- 10:33Uh, the Dove, hi Ro, in a hot Corvette, one episode of Murder.
- 10:37She wrote 139 of Santa Barbara and of course 23 episodes of Days of Our Lives.
- 10:44So we had a month on set.
- 10:45So we got a lot of TV actors in this movie so far.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48Debra Van Valkenberg as Tina.
- 10:51She, Steve, well she was in the Warriors.
- 10:54No, she was Jackie, she was the daughter on Too close for Comfort.
- 10:59Yes.
- 10:59107 episodes of Too Close for Comfort.
- 11:02Streets of Fire, the Rock.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:04From Walter Hill.
- 11:05Streets of Fire.
- 11:06So good.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:07Mean Guns.
- 11:08Episodes of Quantum Leap, DS Nines, criminal Minds, ghost Whisper,
- 11:12and of course the Devil's rejects.
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15Quite the career.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:16Uh, then there's this little known actor named, uh, Dennis Hooper.
- 11:19Oh, I'm sorry.
- 11:20Hopper.
- 11:21Hopper.
- 11:21And it was Cal. Who's he?
- 11:23He's from Super Mario Brothers.
- 11:24Yes.
- 11:25King Cooper himself.
- 11:26Super Mario brother.
- 11:27Oh my God.
- 11:28You might also know him from.
- 11:29Speed.
- 11:30Uh, easy Rider Water World.
- 11:32Red Rock West, blue Velvet, and others.
- 11:35Do it for Van Gogh.
- 11:36Baby.
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:37Blue Velvet.
- 11:38I remember Blue Velvet.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:39Do it for Van Gogh.
- 11:40Well, that's the one where Isabella Rossini streaks the quad, right?
- 11:44Yes.
- 11:44Mm-hmm.
- 11:46Alright guys.
- 11:46And then now we're getting to a couple people.
- 11:48We have to bring up.
- 11:49Definitely a, uh, sneezing, you'll miss him kind of thing.
- 11:52Blue Ribbon Seymour Castle as Barry Tanner, the record executive.
- 11:58Who's he?
- 11:58Steve.
- 11:58220 plus credits.
- 12:00Probably know him best though as like Sam Ketchum and Dick Tracy.
- 12:03Yep.
- 12:03Uh, dirt from Beer League and we saw him last week in It could
- 12:08happen to you as Jack Gross.
- 12:10The Definitely not Trump.
- 12:12Yeah.
- 12:12The definitely not Trump.
- 12:13Who cons Nick Cage's.
- 12:14Wife spoilers.
- 12:15And also guys, Cassandra Peterson is in this movie as the neighbor.
- 12:19Who's she?
- 12:20Steve.
- 12:21Anybody know this one?
- 12:21Cassandra Peterson?
- 12:22No, but she's the one that shows up in the 90, right?
- 12:25Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 12:26The night.
- 12:26And you're like, Hey, stop knocking at the dog.
- 12:28Whatever.
- 12:28Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:29The, the real sexy looking one.
- 12:30That's Elvira Mistress of the Dark.
- 12:32No.
- 12:33Yes.
- 12:34What.
- 12:35Yeah.
- 12:35By the way, sight without the wig, I'd still get it.
- 12:38Oh, to this day,
- 12:41I know she's like 72.
- 12:43I'm all right.
- 12:44Steve would be fine with that.
- 12:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:45That's cool.
- 12:46Wow.
- 12:46I would've never guessed that from seeing her in the movie.
- 12:48Holy smokes.
- 12:49And that's the way she wanted it.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:51Like she wanted to be able to walk around and not be ogled.
- 12:53Now that I think about it in that scene, she posed like Elvira with her leg
- 12:57out with the split dress and mm-hmm.
- 12:59The mighty or whatever.
- 13:00Then now it makes more sense because I was like, this is so random.
- 13:03We'll get to it.
- 13:04And then, uh, we also have William Foresite in this movie as Big Tom.
- 13:08Can anyone tell me who Big Tom was in this movie?
- 13:11No, I missed him.
- 13:12Is he the guy looking for the Breaker bar?
- 13:14Oh, maybe, yeah.
- 13:15One of the guys at the mechanic shop, maybe, I don't know.
- 13:17Hey guys, you know William Forsyth?
- 13:18Uh, he was, he too was in Dick Tracy.
- 13:20Stone Cold raising Arizona Devil's rejects, virtuosity,
- 13:23Savage, Don Cloak and Dagger.
- 13:25Two Bigelow Male Gigolo.
- 13:26Wasn't he the guy that was trying to buy the music?
- 13:28No, that's Tanner.
- 13:29Yeah, it's Barry Tanner.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:31Yeah.
- 13:31That's the Seymour Castle.
- 13:33Barry Tanner wrote the music.
- 13:34Wasn't Barry the friend?
- 13:35No.
- 13:35No.
- 13:36Buddy wrote the music.
- 13:37Oh, buddy.
- 13:38Oh, okay.
- 13:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:40Okay, so the three guys are Steve, buddy and Roger.
- 13:43Right?
- 13:43Those those were the The trio.
- 13:45Yes.
- 13:45And two of 'em look exactly the same except for one is Frow than the other.
- 13:49Yeah.
- 13:50They all have perms.
- 13:51Yeah, well of course, of course.
- 13:52Because it's 1981, everybody has pers I thought Roger was Jerry Seinfeld.
- 13:57Yes.
- 13:57Yes.
- 13:58He's the Jerry Seinfeld looking guy.
- 13:59Yeah, you're right.
- 14:00Yeah.
- 14:00We we were calling him, uh, seventies Adam Driver.
- 14:03Yes.
- 14:04Oh yeah.
- 14:04Yeah, hundred percent.
- 14:05Steve was calling him seventies Adam Driver.
- 14:07I feel like this guy had way too much charisma to be Adam Driver Scott fired.
- 14:11It was a duchovny.
- 14:11What are we talking?
- 14:12Well, okay.
- 14:13Knowing Harry Hamlin, I kept calling him night rider 'cause
- 14:16didn't he look like a ripoff?
- 14:17Hasselhoff?
- 14:17Oh yeah.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:18He definitely looked like hasselhoff off Temu dollar story.
- 14:22Hasselhoff.
- 14:22Yeah.
- 14:23Yeah.
- 14:23And the last one I wanna point out friend of the podcast,
- 14:26Anthony Delonis as gang member.
- 14:28Yeah.
- 14:29Uh, we think he was one of the four guys, you know, when they
- 14:33steal their car at the beginning.
- 14:35Oh yeah.
- 14:35Like tossing the keys back and forth in front of the police station.
- 14:39Uhhuh.
- 14:39Yeah.
- 14:39That they just got bailed out if, yeah.
- 14:41Yeah, we'll look about that.
- 14:42Same.
- 14:42But, uh, I think he was one of them.
- 14:44Oh, wow.
- 14:44Okay.
- 14:45Again, Stacey Peterson, friend of the podcast, you might know him from
- 14:47Masters of the Universe as Blade, a Master Swordsman and Whip Master and
- 14:51Horse Rider choreographed and trained like every amazing sword and whip scene
- 14:56you've ever watched in the last 40 years.
- 14:58Oh, wow.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 14:59He's like taught all the, uh, cat women how to use the whips and whatnot.
- 15:03Yeah, he's amazing.
- 15:04Wow.
- 15:04That's awesome.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:04We all gotta start somewhere.
- 15:051980 one's King of the Mountain.
- 15:08We watched this guy on Tubi.
- 15:10Did you guys uh, watch it all on Voodoo or Tubi?
- 15:12Voodoo?
- 15:12It was free this month with ads.
- 15:14Ooh, free on Tubi two with ads.
- 15:16And, uh, Fandango at home, whatever that is.
- 15:19Well, voodoo is Fandango now, but yeah.
- 15:21Oh, is it?
- 15:21Oh shit.
- 15:21Okay.
- 15:22There we go.
- 15:22That makes sense.
- 15:23But yeah, so yeah, as we mentioned before, we started off with some dizzying
- 15:26helicopter shots of Mulholland Drive and uh, we get some narration like,
- 15:29oh yeah, Mulholland Drive 23 miles from end and it's the only place I
- 15:34felt safe and all the shit for sure.
- 15:36I thought for a second this was gonna start out as like
- 15:38a zombie apocalypse movie.
- 15:40'cause that's all we've been watching for the podcast this year.
- 15:42That's great.
- 15:43You got into town and everybody was still there and I'm like, the fuck is
- 15:46this, the population's still alive.
- 15:48Did they drop the bomb yet?
- 15:49No.
- 15:49So what I thought was when Lee Majors crossed into California, much can land
- 15:56at the end of last Chase Free California.
- 15:59This is free California now.
- 16:00This is part two of the last Chase picks up where the other one left off.
- 16:04Perfect.
- 16:04That makes sense because the police force isn't exactly
- 16:07the, the wisest bit of people.
- 16:10This is like a, a few deputies in a small town kind of operations.
- 16:14Local police force trying to handle shit like this.
- 16:17It's like Keystone cops.
- 16:18You think we should mess with them tonight?
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:20Let's go get 'em.
- 16:2110 minutes of another bad helicopter scene.
- 16:24By the way, how was he able to hear them talking to him?
- 16:29Why he turned his lights off?
- 16:30Yeah.
- 16:31Oh, uh, the helicopters have like a speaker on it.
- 16:33Oh, loudspeakers.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:34But yeah, but he's too busy cranking up Renegade by Sticks.
- 16:38Yeah, that's right.
- 16:40Is up.
- 16:40He finally found me, which is a great song.
- 16:43Like that's the song you should be listening to while
- 16:45you're evading the police.
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:46The most badass song of 1981.
- 16:49Definitely not 1976, like Shut up.
- 16:53They moved on to Mr. Roboto at this point.
- 16:55All right, I'll blast it tomorrow out.
- 16:57Running the Cops for you, babe.
- 16:59Steelers fan.
- 17:00Anyway,
- 17:03so this is the race.
- 17:04That Brad mentioned between the Trans Am the yellow one and the 3 56
- 17:09Outlaw that Harry Hamlin's driving.
- 17:11Steve is driving in this opening sequence and he gets arrested.
- 17:14But while all this is going down, we get our first glimpse of Dennis Hopper.
- 17:18Tell me he isn't being a complete creeper.
- 17:21Oh dude, he's Dennis Hopper.
- 17:23Isn't that how he is?
- 17:24Wait, wait.
- 17:25Was it Dennis Hopper or Tommy Chong?
- 17:27I couldn't tell.
- 17:29Oh, well, fun fact, only one of those gentlemen is banned
- 17:34from the country of Australia.
- 17:37It's not Tommy Chong.
- 17:38I would've put my money on both of them being banned from Australia,
- 17:42banned for behaving badly while filming a movie in Australia
- 17:46that all tracks for both of them.
- 17:47Uhhuh.
- 17:49Yeah.
- 17:50So have that opening raise.
- 17:51They get arrested or whatever.
- 17:52They have to get the $200 to bail 'em out or whatever.
- 17:55This, this is where they go out to their car and there's another
- 17:58car parked, I guess, too close for them to pull out or whatever.
- 18:01The friend buddy, he's like, Hey man, could you just back your car up?
- 18:04Oh yeah, let me get my keys.
- 18:05Oh, they start playing.
- 18:06Keep away like their 12 year olds or something.
- 18:08And then this is when Steve Hero of our movie, who has already been to jail for,
- 18:12you know, living life a quarter mile at a time though 23 miles at a stretch.
- 18:16And as buddy points out.
- 18:18Three times in three months.
- 18:19He's on a first name basis with the cops there in la right?
- 18:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:23So tells the guy to jump in and like roll up the windows.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:26And then hot wires it and they drive off and I'm instantly the friend, I'm like,
- 18:29well, you just left your car there, so.
- 18:32Alright.
- 18:32I wanna ask Dan, what did he hot wire that car with?
- 18:36Because it looked like he took a piece of chewing gum wrapper and
- 18:39then shoved it up in the dashboard.
- 18:41Yes, I have actually seen that in other movies where they take, I guess they use
- 18:45the chewing gum wrapper to hot wire cars.
- 18:48I don't know.
- 18:49Is that how you do it, man?
- 18:50Man.
- 18:50Dan in theory would work if it's the older style switches where the wires are screwed
- 18:54into the back of the switch assembly and use the gum wrapper to jumper it.
- 18:57The problem is as soon as you remove it, all that does is send the
- 18:59signal out for a starter to spin.
- 19:01It doesn't turn the power on for the ignition, so it would crank, but it
- 19:04technically wouldn't start in real life.
- 19:07Ah.
- 19:07But it's a Mopar product, not a Chevy.
- 19:09So does that make a difference?
- 19:10It does not.
- 19:11Okay.
- 19:12Was it a roadrunner or was it a charger?
- 19:14I was trying to figure it out.
- 19:15I swear it was a Dukes of hazard car.
- 19:17Like it was like an orange charger.
- 19:19Let me take a look and see.
- 19:20Oh, he's got the database.
- 19:21Don't forget.
- 19:22Oh shit.
- 19:22Oh, that's right.
- 19:23There we go.
- 19:23I wanna say it was a Plymouth because of the silver plating
- 19:26on the lights in the back.
- 19:27You get a really weird glimpse of it.
- 19:29To Steve's point, the silhouette is definitely of a charger, but it's like,
- 19:33was it a Plymouth or was it a Dodge?
- 19:34So the car in front of the, uh, police station was a 1970 Dodge Super Bee.
- 19:38Oh, even better.
- 19:39Even better.
- 19:40That's a nice rare, but yeah, basically they, uh, pull off their,
- 19:43the stolen car to the studio to further incriminate more people.
- 19:46Mm-hmm.
- 19:47Uh, in their grand theft auto.
- 19:48And then we cut to a lipsync session.
- 19:50She was not lip syncing.
- 19:52I wanted to know was she actually singing or not?
- 19:55Yes.
- 19:55The credits said she was singing.
- 19:57So whether she was lip syncing in the scene or not.
- 20:00Okay.
- 20:01The first 20 seconds, or though they were way off, like I don't know if
- 20:04it was just wasn't synced up or what, whether the scene was real or not.
- 20:08Her credits say she was singing the song.
- 20:10To Steve's point, I think whenever they panned to Roger.
- 20:13He was trying to sing the lyrics, like silently sing a different song.
- 20:18A hundred percent.
- 20:19Uh, see, he was not even at the same concert.
- 20:21He was just singing something completely different when it was showing her singing.
- 20:24At first it was really rough and then it kind of synced up.
- 20:26So I was like, okay, I can kind of see it.
- 20:28But I don't know, I just assumed it was like an Ashley Simpson thing.
- 20:31Can we talk about the song, the whole damn song?
- 20:34Exactly.
- 20:34The entire song Against All Odds.
- 20:38The whole damn song.
- 20:39No, it it, it, it was a pretty catchy little song for 1977.
- 20:43Don't say the lyrics.
- 20:44I don't know what she wants out of this song.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:47Does she wanna be a one night stand?
- 20:49Does she want it to be more than a one night stand?
- 20:51She wants to be a dangerous stranger.
- 20:52Exactly.
- 20:53Stranger danger.
- 20:54But she's coming.
- 20:55I bet she is.
- 20:56She's coming back or whatever, whatever the line was.
- 20:59Oh, she's coming.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 21:00Looking at Steve will do that.
- 21:01Wow.
- 21:02The problem I had with the four and a half minutes that this took, because
- 21:05she sung the entire song, was every time she looked at somebody, she kept
- 21:09looking like more distraught because she kept looking at Steve, right?
- 21:13Like she was getting creeped out.
- 21:14Steve's just creeper eye in her.
- 21:17It was cringey.
- 21:17And then after the song they're like, Hey Steve, meet Tina.
- 21:20And they're like, all in.
- 21:22I guess just that intense physical attraction of a, a beautiful
- 21:25stranger you just stumbled upon.
- 21:26They're like hanging out.
- 21:28They're at the studio, smoking and staring and drinking, and it's.
- 21:31Singing, and I thought it was gonna turn into Caligula throughout the whole movie.
- 21:36There was a lot of substance abuse.
- 21:38I just wanna say that.
- 21:39What?
- 21:40Right.
- 21:40Sex and rock and roll.
- 21:41It was the era.
- 21:42Yeah.
- 21:43I I, I guess this was the eighties, man.
- 21:45This was hairbands the seventies, it was the downward curve, but there was still
- 21:50sex, drugs, and rock and roll, I guess.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53This was shot in the late sixties, right?
- 21:54That's what we're talking about.
- 21:561948. Yeah.
- 21:58Before AIDS was invented also, doesn't somebody have a fiance?
- 22:02Oh, we'll get to that.
- 22:03Don't you worry.
- 22:04Yeah, we'll get to that.
- 22:04And I never, never speak of that again.
- 22:06You know?
- 22:07Okay.
- 22:08So he doesn't have his car and he's got a bummer ride.
- 22:11So to your point, they get really chummy really fast.
- 22:14And Tina, which is Jackie from Too Close for comfort, whatever her real
- 22:18name is, Deborah decides to drive him home in Colombo's, eo, hold on.
- 22:22Okay.
- 22:23I'm glad you went there because I almost turned the freaking movie off.
- 22:28I was like, I'm not watching this.
- 22:29I'm not doing this.
- 22:30It's not happening because as fans of our show know, when the Citro and DS is
- 22:35involved, it's like, I could burn the air.
- 22:37I hate those things so bad.
- 22:39So if I was in his shoes, I would've dumped her ass immediately.
- 22:43Oh, you drive a Ciro and I'm gonna walk.
- 22:45But Eric, did you see that rack?
- 22:46I'm not getting in that car.
- 22:48It's not happening.
- 22:49The rack on top of the car or her rack?
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:51Either one.
- 22:52Yeah.
- 22:52Yeah.
- 22:53Yes.
- 22:54If you had said no, you would've missed the jack in the box.
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:59Good old Jack Daniel's in that glove compartment.
- 23:01Jack in the glove box.
- 23:04Again, substance abuse, all over the place, drinking, driving, moving.
- 23:07No problem.
- 23:08Yep.
- 23:08And I do like that she drives them to her place.
- 23:10Right.
- 23:11Like instantly.
- 23:11I'm like, all right, good for you, girl.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:13And there's like nothing on the walls, there's no pictures, no nothing.
- 23:17It's always is like you, uh, you just move in.
- 23:19No, you move out.
- 23:21No, this is just how I live.
- 23:23You know?
- 23:23Where cereal kill people.
- 23:25Here help me lay down this, uh, tarp.
- 23:27And, uh, do you like Huey Lewis in the news?
- 23:30Yeah.
- 23:30What, what was, what was her line?
- 23:32It was, she said, I'm waiting for my furniture.
- 23:34And he said, oh, when are you gonna get it?
- 23:35And she said, well, my furniture's waiting for my money.
- 23:39Oh yeah.
- 23:39Oh yeah.
- 23:40Classy.
- 23:40So then's 6:00 AM and everybody's starting to sober up.
- 23:44Remember like, oh yeah, shit, I'm supposed to be at work in 20 minutes.
- 23:47And then Steve comes back to the studio, I guess do his victory lap.
- 23:51And this is where we're introduced to his girlfriend, Iris.
- 23:54Oh, I'm sorry, fiancee Iris.
- 23:56Little Blanc Hick.
- 23:57We're only gonna see in this scene Uhhuh Uhhuh could have been
- 24:01completely cut out from the film.
- 24:03Yeah.
- 24:03And he's playing, you know, Atari video games as is tradition at the time.
- 24:07It's just one of those things like, yeah, he's sitting there playing and talking
- 24:11about like, Hey, so yeah, you, you guys got a date set, blah, blah, blah.
- 24:14He is like, yes.
- 24:15Something like that.
- 24:16I don't know.
- 24:16We're probably gonna move in together anyway.
- 24:18Cut to some reckless driving by Dennis Hopper, Uhhuh and Steve's like, so Dennis
- 24:22Hopper's gonna kill all of them, right?
- 24:24Right.
- 24:24Serial killer.
- 24:26Yes.
- 24:26It's like, go.
- 24:27But we find out, not only is Dennis Hopper, Al, he's a mechanic, but
- 24:31so is uh, Steve and Grizzly Adams and I. Guess big bomb this time.
- 24:35I did not know they were mechanics.
- 24:37Yeah, I thought they all just hung out at this shop doing shop things.
- 24:42Yeah.
- 24:42Out front it was like pro performance mechanics or something like that too.
- 24:46It very easily could have been grant touring Motorsport or something like that.
- 24:49So it's like, oh yeah, this is a garage where, you know, these
- 24:52guys fix their vehicles for races.
- 24:53They work on Porsches except for the one guy that has a Chevy.
- 24:57Yeah.
- 24:58Well, you know, you know expensive it is to rent that
- 24:59many Porsches for a film shoot.
- 25:01He's the new guy.
- 25:02Did you see the sign in the background behind the Corvette?
- 25:05Like when it was in the shop?
- 25:06It says like the small, fast and expensive repair shop or something like that.
- 25:10It was like a big poster behind the car.
- 25:12I thought it was really kind of ironic, huh?
- 25:14This is where there's a scene where the other guy, maybe it's Big Tom
- 25:18or whatever the guy's name is, that we can't identify who's pushing that
- 25:21nine 11 from behind the race car.
- 25:23And Dennis Hopper's just standing there talking to him and smoking a cigarette,
- 25:27walking alongside him, making the old man do all the work and he is just
- 25:31huffing and trying to push that car into the shop and all this kinda thing.
- 25:34I wrote down this line as I do, 'cause I take copious notes and he goes, you know
- 25:38what's worse than a car that won't run?
- 25:40Holding up a dead body?
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:42And you're like, what?
- 25:45That's some Dennis Hopper improv right there.
- 25:47I guarantee it.
- 25:48I thought before that he said, you know what's worse than a car that won't
- 25:51run is pushing a car that won't run.
- 25:53But then he says, holding up a dead body.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55And then holding up a dead body.
- 25:56Yeah.
- 25:56Right after that.
- 25:57Yeah.
- 25:58The pile of goo that used to be your friend, he's like, starts going
- 26:01to like a Rambo rant or something.
- 26:03Well, the bandana didn't help either.
- 26:05Nothing is over.
- 26:06Never Tommy Chong.
- 26:07Nothing is over, man.
- 26:08But then he is like, oh, hey Steve.
- 26:10Some uh, some chick came by looking for you.
- 26:12Yeah.
- 26:13What'd you tell her?
- 26:14Told her you got a small dick.
- 26:16Like, yeah, that's a, that's a coworker brand.
- 26:18That sounds right.
- 26:19Yeah.
- 26:19Yeah.
- 26:19That checks out.
- 26:20It's like, thanks, bro.
- 26:21The dialogue was horrendous.
- 26:23Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:24I feel like half of it might have been improv, just kinda like trying to shoot
- 26:27the shit or whatever, but then they're like, oh wait, these guys can't improv.
- 26:31Just act like you guys have been working together for years.
- 26:34What's working man?
- 26:35You gotta, we gotta leave it in though.
- 26:37We gotta make it a full 90 minutes.
- 26:3820 takes and that was the best one.
- 26:41And it was about this time I, I was like, okay.
- 26:43Kind of unlikeable lead character.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:46Cheating around.
- 26:47Has a job as a mechanic, you know, a bike, whatever this is
- 26:50silver Dream racer, isn't it?
- 26:53I wonder if this is gonna have a similar ending, spoilers.
- 26:55It kind of does.
- 26:56Mm Oh you guys.
- 26:58Silver Dream racer.
- 26:59You ever like just get so frustrated with the movie you like
- 27:02you're trying to call it Bluff?
- 27:03Like, Hey, like if this movie had any balls, it would do this, but it doesn't.
- 27:07I was doing that during, so I was heckling this movie and
- 27:10it's like everybody in this is.
- 27:11Been dead for years.
- 27:12Nobody cares.
- 27:13You hear that?
- 27:14Harry Hamlin, he's still alive.
- 27:15Silver Dream racer.
- 27:16Called My Bluff.
- 27:17And now I cannot heckle terrible movies like this because they
- 27:20just might call my Bluff Theater.
- 27:23So yeah, that night Steve's driving with Tina.
- 27:25I don't know, GI Giving Exposition or whatever exposition darling.
- 27:29It has to go somewhere, right?
- 27:30And he is like, you gotta ride the edge if you want to win and blah, blah blah.
- 27:34And I'm just like Canyon inside and out.
- 27:36I'm only free when I'm on the canyon.
- 27:38By the way, you met Cal earlier, right?
- 27:40That guy that said a small dick.
- 27:42Yeah, he bought it like 15 years ago and they had to completely rebuild
- 27:45him and now he's too scared to ride.
- 27:48Fierce.
- 27:48Catch you.
- 27:49I'm, I'm picturing Cal's like the $6 million man or something
- 27:52like being pieced together.
- 27:53We made him better, faster, stronger, higher.
- 27:56He's the six Budweiser man.
- 27:57Steve, even as a car guy, I was throwing up a little bit in the
- 28:01back of my throat this entire time.
- 28:04I was like, this is so bad.
- 28:06Yeah, this is so cringey.
- 28:08However.
- 28:09Credit where credit is due.
- 28:10I didn't take any issue with the sound effects with the Porsche.
- 28:14It was actually correct.
- 28:15Oh, okay.
- 28:16Oh, thank God.
- 28:16That was gonna be my next question.
- 28:17Oh, thank you.
- 28:18Thank you.
- 28:18I'm glad they matched up.
- 28:19I took issue with other cars though, but not with the Porsche.
- 28:22It's all good.
- 28:22Mount Mandan is our, is our resident dragster.
- 28:25Is that how you feel when you race for pink slips?
- 28:27Is it just like that rush that makes it worth living or are
- 28:31you more like a practical?
- 28:33I've never raced for pink slip, so I can't really give.
- 28:35Ta Tanya, are you a pinking?
- 28:36Slipper?
- 28:37No.
- 28:37You ever throw on those ping slippers?
- 28:40I was gonna say, Steve, aren't you the one who uh, ended up with a car
- 28:44that you had to take the front seat out of to drive to help out a friend?
- 28:47Well, yeah, but racing sounds like the plot to Police Academy too.
- 28:52We're not the ones living at the edge, so we have no frame of reference.
- 28:55Right.
- 28:55To personify with the lead character of this movie then.
- 28:58Right.
- 28:58Brad has some drag racing experience ever race for, oh, Brad.
- 29:00Oh my god.
- 29:00Brad.
- 29:01Race for Pinks.
- 29:01Brad, I've never raced for Pinks List, but I have raced for money a hundred bucks.
- 29:05That and more.
- 29:06It's always exciting until you have to hand over the money you just lost.
- 29:12I was gonna say, is it like what Clarkson says?
- 29:14Does it give you the fizz?
- 29:16Yeah.
- 29:16Yeah.
- 29:17That's what it does.
- 29:17Well, Brad, if it's any consolation, whoever won that money from
- 29:20you, just put it right back into their car immediately after.
- 29:23After a thousand percent.
- 29:24No, they put it into the next person's car.
- 29:26Oh.
- 29:29So yeah.
- 29:29So yeah, they're driving along and then, uh, that's right.
- 29:31His buddy that like pulled along and was like, Hey, you wanna a race?
- 29:35Yeah.
- 29:35Winter takes the girl.
- 29:36And I'm expecting Tina to be like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 29:40But no, she's like, yeah, we gets the girl.
- 29:42What?
- 29:43Then he starts howling like Burges Meredith did in the last movie.
- 29:46And you're like, what the hell is happening here?
- 29:48I expect him to be racing.
- 29:49And he is like, oh, that's right baby.
- 29:51Just like old times.
- 29:53Oh yeah.
- 29:54I'm just gonna slide it in real quick.
- 29:56What Burgess please.
- 29:57Oh.
- 30:00But yeah, they race and then, uh, they get hot dogs at that, uh, train car di
- 30:04whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 30:05Wait, wait.
- 30:06Before we'd slip into the hot dog, he turns to her and he goes, hit that drop.
- 30:11He goes, you feel that vibration?
- 30:13Where is this going?
- 30:14This is like danger in a manifold.
- 30:15Yeah.
- 30:16His muffler fell off.
- 30:17He's like, you feel that?
- 30:18What?
- 30:19Whoa.
- 30:19The whole car runs over its own buffer.
- 30:22It was really random.
- 30:23It does come back later as we come to find out.
- 30:26It was, it had no point to the story, but it was just like we had to add that
- 30:29in, like it really mattered at all.
- 30:31Again, maybe some ad-libbing there, but I just thought it was
- 30:33funny and she's like, no, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 30:36Just keep driving me.
- 30:38And then they had that diner, they're getting hot dogs or whatever because
- 30:41it was all about his journey into realizing he doesn't need to be
- 30:44the king of the mountain anymore.
- 30:46Is that what this movie's about?
- 30:47But he wasn't the king yet.
- 30:48I mean, we find out the third person in the trio, Roger the roommates or whatever.
- 30:53He was the driver too.
- 30:54But he doesn't do it anymore.
- 30:55'cause I don't know, maybe he's the smart one.
- 30:57He is the producer.
- 30:58Yeah.
- 30:58Yeah.
- 30:58He's a music producer of his.
- 31:00Friends.
- 31:01But yeah, we get Steve talking about, oh yeah, I could drive that course
- 31:03blindfolded and I'm waiting for, oh God, is this gonna be the finale?
- 31:06Mm-hmm.
- 31:07He's gonna have to drive it blind.
- 31:08Like, I don't know, Dennis Hopper throw salt in his eyes or something.
- 31:11Ah.
- 31:13I feel that tone, that whole diner scene was cringey, felt forced.
- 31:17The acting was just, it was bad.
- 31:19Yeah.
- 31:19I'll say it.
- 31:19Just about every scene in this movie is kind of cringey.
- 31:22'cause they're not great actors.
- 31:26You know what I mean?
- 31:27I mean, de Dennis Hopper's, Dennis Hopper, you know what you're getting with him.
- 31:29But like Harry Hamlet, Steve Buddy, and Roger.
- 31:32It's kind of just like Tom, Dick and Harry, right?
- 31:35You're like, whatever.
- 31:35Tina's kind, meh.
- 31:37She's not like really a character, it seems like.
- 31:40Just kind of there.
- 31:41Yeah.
- 31:41What about, uh, Iris, and where is she the rest of the movie?
- 31:44Maybe she's serving the hotdog, I assume she's going back to high school, right.
- 31:48God, would that be outta place in this movie?
- 31:51Not really, no.
- 31:52And after the diner scene, the following day is when he drives back up?
- 31:55Mm-hmm.
- 31:55Walked that corner where he felt the vibration or whatever.
- 31:57He's looking for his muffler.
- 31:59Yeah.
- 32:00In all honestly, it was like a lot of times we go to tracks, do a
- 32:02track, walk you out there and you look for the little stuff that you
- 32:05don't necessarily feel in the car.
- 32:06So he was trying to see something different.
- 32:07'cause something felt different.
- 32:08So it made sense for me when he went out to do that.
- 32:11At the moment in the scene, I'm like, what the hell is he talking about?
- 32:13A vibration.
- 32:14Yeah.
- 32:14Yeah.
- 32:15So I'm with you there.
- 32:16Having done many track walks myself, I immediately identified
- 32:19with that and everybody else is going, what the hell is he doing?
- 32:21Why is he squatting down and looking the asphalt and all that kinda stuff.
- 32:24For me as a track guy, I got that.
- 32:26To your point, it was completely out of sequence with the movie.
- 32:30Like again, another scene that you could have just cut out.
- 32:32You wouldn't have lost anything.
- 32:33You wouldn't have gained anything by leaving it in either.
- 32:36So it is what it is.
- 32:37But I identified with it.
- 32:38I see that.
- 32:39I think it does on though, because how that's around the turn where
- 32:43he decides he's letting No.
- 32:44Yeah.
- 32:44Yeah.
- 32:45We'll get to that.
- 32:45Don't spoil it.
- 32:46Don't spoil it.
- 32:46Yeah.
- 32:47My whole thing with that whole scene where he was walking that road or whatever, is
- 32:50like, does nobody use mole hull and drive?
- 32:52Nope.
- 32:52Because he's out there for like a solid three minutes, no cuts, whatever.
- 32:55And I'm like, okay, well obviously they got the street shut down the whole night
- 32:58when they're doing the races and stuff.
- 33:00I'm like, nobody's getting home through Mulholland Drive.
- 33:03High atop the mall home and view shelf like nobody uses that road.
- 33:06Have you been on it?
- 33:07Oh yeah.
- 33:08I mean, it's sort of the road to nowhere.
- 33:09It is a canyon road, the road to my mansion, friend.
- 33:12To that end, how many cars should be on that road at the end of the day?
- 33:15Right.
- 33:16Not too, too many.
- 33:17I mean, I mean it's like early morning, like maybe, I'm assuming it's like the
- 33:19shortcut to get to work for some people.
- 33:21Like, you know, avoiding the five or the 4 0 5 or whatever, two 10.
- 33:25There was that Lincoln that came by and sort of honked at him as he was
- 33:28squatted down looking at the road.
- 33:30So somebody was there.
- 33:31Oh one?
- 33:31Yeah.
- 33:31Okay.
- 33:32Well yeah, go back to Cal the garage.
- 33:34It's like talking with Steve or whatever and uh, he is like,
- 33:36Hey, I felt something last night.
- 33:38Like, yeah, I'll tell you what you felt.
- 33:39You felt fear.
- 33:40It's that fear creeping up in you, man, your car's like a
- 33:43runaway knife and the thrill.
- 33:46It's a thrill maker, man.
- 33:48Okay.
- 33:49Okay.
- 33:49This was the beginning of some of the most nonsensical dialogue from Dennis Hopper.
- 33:54The rest of the movie, it just sets the tone for every time
- 33:57he's in scene and I'm just like, oh, did they just let him loose?
- 34:00They let him off the leash and does whatever he wants.
- 34:02It seemed like he didn't have a script through the whole movie in my life, right?
- 34:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:06He is Dennis Hopper.
- 34:07He must have been high because I was like, dialogue makes no sense whatsoever.
- 34:11It's completely non-sequitur.
- 34:13It's like what?
- 34:13I mean it's legit.
- 34:14He probably was fucked up.
- 34:15'cause he is drinking beers and drinking whiskey simultaneously, like
- 34:18chasing the, the whiskey with beer.
- 34:19So, well, I mean, he's on the job so he, he gotta say semi sober
- 34:24anyway, so I always try and then like, I dunno, somebody says like,
- 34:27watch out for him and I swear they said, fucking your ass or whatever.
- 34:30Or did I, there's some random stuff thrown into the dialogue for sure.
- 34:35Yeah.
- 34:35'cause then it was like rated pg, but I swear it was like, you
- 34:37know, you gotta watch out for him.
- 34:39Fucking your ass ridiculous.
- 34:41So then I wrote down sandwiches and music time.
- 34:43That's what comes next.
- 34:44Yeah.
- 34:45Oh God.
- 34:46So yeah, we get to the apartment where the, the Holy Trinity live
- 34:49lives, you know, Steve Buddy and, uh, Roger This the cast of Seinfeld.
- 34:54Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 34:56George, Jerry and Kramer.
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:58Except Jerry's balls deep in Julia Louise Dreyfus while, uh, while George and
- 35:03Cosmo are, uh, making giant sandwiches and like teasing each other with them.
- 35:08Oh, these guys are in love.
- 35:09Yeah.
- 35:10I, I was waiting for that to be the hookup at the end.
- 35:12Honestly.
- 35:12Like, like I just can't quit you, Roger.
- 35:15You can have all of my sandwich.
- 35:17It's so weird.
- 35:19Screechy.
- 35:20And then, oh yeah, this is where Izzy pointed out, is that a
- 35:22nipple pillow on their couch?
- 35:24It is Pillow.
- 35:24Yes it is.
- 35:26Yes, it's, and there was a couple mannequin off on the side earlier too.
- 35:29Yep.
- 35:29This so reminds me of how I lived my early years of the military.
- 35:33Like almost no furniture, just a beer cooler there with beer in it regularly.
- 35:37Sandwich meats.
- 35:37Hey, you have the giant construction spool is like a table Uhhuh,
- 35:41couple milk crates as seats.
- 35:43Yeah.
- 35:43He's got that now.
- 35:44So Yes.
- 35:45I mean, yeah.
- 35:46But they're not the quality they used to be.
- 35:48That's right.
- 35:49And then, yeah, we got a nice little, uh, improv Romeo and Julia se Julia
- 35:53session from, uh, fucking Buddy and Roger.
- 35:56That's like at the piano, like Romeo and Julie.
- 36:01I was waiting for it to either go sort of Bohemian Rhapsody or
- 36:05Sherry Lewis was gonna show up with the little lamb chop puppet.
- 36:08You know, it was gonna go in one of these two directions.
- 36:12Yeah.
- 36:13So they're just annoying enough to cock block Steve and uh, so yeah.
- 36:17Then what happens?
- 36:18We head back to the mountain, Steve and Tina start going into their backstories
- 36:22as we're down skip cut to night racing.
- 36:24Yep.
- 36:24So now Steve in his 3 56 outlaw goes against the Sunburst Magnum
- 36:30pi, the yellow 3 0 8 Ferrari.
- 36:34That's why I was hoping they would play the theme song.
- 36:36Right.
- 36:36So we gotta capture some of that Magnum pi goodness in the movie too.
- 36:40But that race was pathetic.
- 36:42What he crashes like in the third turn or something like
- 36:44that, he's like off in the weeds.
- 36:46Like that's the end of it.
- 36:47Well, what do you mean?
- 36:47That was pathetic.
- 36:48That son of a bitch took my medal, says Cal Uhhuh, which is like, wait,
- 36:52he beat his record time at King of the Mountain or on Mulholland Drive, I guess.
- 36:56Is that what he was crying about?
- 36:58By the only person that was timing it, which was Cal. 'cause who's
- 37:01keeping track of this stuff, right?
- 37:03I mean, like.
- 37:03Whatever.
- 37:04Yeah.
- 37:04So then we go back to the studio and, uh, Roger, he's, uh, he's pitching
- 37:08in his songs or whatever to, uh, radio executive, uh, Seymour Castle.
- 37:12Barry Tanner.
- 37:12That's right.
- 37:13Tanner.
- 37:13He's like, Hey, yeah, this song's great.
- 37:15I'd like to, uh, buy it from you for, uh, the Sack Cadillac Blue, and like mm-hmm.
- 37:19Well, no, no, it's, it's, it's for my songwriter buddy.
- 37:22And you know, you have to, you like sign him.
- 37:24It's not just for the song.
- 37:25And he is like, look, yeah buddy.
- 37:27He's not a songwriter until I sell him.
- 37:29So you do a couple songs or whatever and then, uh, you know, we see from
- 37:33there and then he is like, don't worry, you didn't sell him out.
- 37:36You bought yourself in.
- 37:38Mm-hmm.
- 37:38I'm like, is that supposed to make me feel better?
- 37:40Yeah.
- 37:40Right.
- 37:41Yeah.
- 37:41Also like, oh my God, this guy's double speak is like infuriating and so accurate
- 37:46that like, this guy's got real talent.
- 37:48This is a deal maker.
- 37:49This is a, this is a hit on our hands, but also he's not really that good, so
- 37:53I'm just gonna buy this for nothing.
- 37:54Scumbag, that's what he was.
- 37:56Oh yeah.
- 37:57Meanwhile, the, uh, the rest of the gang are, uh, just waiting and
- 38:01drinking and stacking up lots and lots of beers at the Hollywood Bowl.
- 38:05Yeah.
- 38:06And they have an empty stadium apparently to play around with.
- 38:09Is that just open access, like all hours?
- 38:11There's not a concert.
- 38:12No, babe.
- 38:13They're playing a gig, but nobody showed up.
- 38:17That's the real thing.
- 38:18I think it's b and not a in this case, but, uh, that night Roger,
- 38:23uh, shows up the apartment, all shit facing drunk and knocking on the
- 38:27door is like Steve did the door.
- 38:31And then this is where we get the sexy Elvira neighbors stepping out like, Hey,
- 38:35will you shut the fuck up down there.
- 38:36I'm trying to sleep.
- 38:37So much more clarity on this scene now.
- 38:39Thank you for filling in that gap.
- 38:41I don't think I would've slept.
- 38:42Well, not knowing, because she was yelling down like an
- 38:44angry New Yorker or something.
- 38:45Right.
- 38:46And so you're expecting it to be like, you know, old lady, like
- 38:48Hurler in her hair or some shit.
- 38:49But then it's like, oh, my hot redhead.
- 38:51Maybe she's looking for some action.
- 38:52I don't know why else you would walk out in that outfit.
- 38:55I was thinking she was the Lady of the Night.
- 38:57I was like, oh, I mean, they do live in that neighborhood.
- 38:59And Tina said earlier, oh, this is Valentino's old place, like
- 39:03a Playboy mansion kind of thing.
- 39:04And then it was like something about her either working at night or she
- 39:08sleeps at night or something like that.
- 39:09I was like, there was something reference to the neighbor
- 39:11wearing sunglasses at night.
- 39:12Definitely a thousand percent.
- 39:14So I was like, whatever.
- 39:15Okay.
- 39:15I just let it.
- 39:15Slide.
- 39:16But now again, with the lens of Elvira, this makes way more sense.
- 39:20Well, the stands without known as El Elvira, like your thought, like
- 39:23the Lady of the Night type thing.
- 39:24I was like, wait, is, isn't this how porno movies start?
- 39:26Yeah, it did have that vibe.
- 39:29It really did.
- 39:30Hello?
- 39:30I hear you have problem with pipes.
- 39:34Here's your hot and spice sassy pizza.
- 39:36Do you order the large Italian?
- 39:37Sorry.
- 39:38So then Steve eventually answers the door and Roger's like,
- 39:41let's go for a drive, man.
- 39:42No.
- 39:42What's, what's wrong?
- 39:43What's going on?
- 39:44Let's go for a drive.
- 39:44Let's go for a drive.
- 39:45And I'm like, just fucking tell him.
- 39:47So they go for a drive musical interlude, and he doesn't tell him.
- 39:49So then the next morning, you know, buddies, there it is, uh, piano
- 39:53singing his new song or whatever.
- 39:54And he almost had to do the whole damn four minutes of that one too.
- 39:57Yep.
- 39:57Steven, Roger kind of show up and wait it out.
- 40:00And then, uh, he's like, yeah, talk to the record exec.
- 40:04And he is like, yeah, I figured he didn't call immediately.
- 40:06He said he is gonna pass.
- 40:07Like, no, no.
- 40:08He wants you to be a songwriter, but it's gonna be covered by other bands.
- 40:12But yeah, no, I heard that's song fun.
- 40:14That's for.
- 40:15That's our song.
- 40:16Yeah.
- 40:16But you know, this is how you like get in man.
- 40:18And then when those are hits, they come to you for more hits.
- 40:20But in fact you get in with my friends.
- 40:22Yeah.
- 40:22It's just a whole awkward conversation.
- 40:24'cause it's like, wait, I thought it was a different situation.
- 40:27Maybe I just don't understand.
- 40:28The music industry probably has a lot to do with it.
- 40:30You don't understand friends, Steve.
- 40:31That's the problem.
- 40:32This is how friends talk to each other.
- 40:33True.
- 40:34That's true.
- 40:34I don't have friends.
- 40:35You've never had a man lover.
- 40:36Men lovers are very emotional creatures.
- 40:39Where is this going?
- 40:41These guys are lovers.
- 40:42Yeah, there's a conversation between man, lover to man lover and man lover.
- 40:46'cause there's three of 'em there.
- 40:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:47Tanya, you can back me up on this, right?
- 40:49Men are very emotional creatures when they're your lovers.
- 40:51Somebody ask me a question,
- 40:55sorry, stop listening.
- 40:56A couple minutes ago, hot pod right here.
- 40:59Hot pod.
- 41:02I'm gonna take that as a yes and let's keep going.
- 41:04No further questions.
- 41:05The prosecution rests.
- 41:08Alright.
- 41:08Well luckily, God damnit, we've had zero charisma for like 30 seconds,
- 41:12so we cut to back to the garage and Cal is just losing his shit.
- 41:15He is, uh, going around, oh, he beat my record man, and fucking he stole my medal.
- 41:21Blah, blah, blah.
- 41:22Steve, you bitch ass, you broke my record.
- 41:24But you're a coward.
- 41:25You don't know how to drive.
- 41:26Then Grizzly Adams like, has to come in and like break up their fight.
- 41:29Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 41:30Wait.
- 41:30This is my favorite part.
- 41:31This is the breaker part where the guy who looks like, oh, geez.
- 41:35Looks like Larry from the Three Stooges shows up Dennis Hopper's on the grinder
- 41:39with a piece of like angle iron doing nothing, and he taps him on the shoulder.
- 41:43He is like, man, I'm looking for a breaker bar.
- 41:44And then he starts going nuts and he's trying to pick a fight.
- 41:47And that's when Barry Gibb comes in and tries to break it up.
- 41:50Mm-hmm.
- 41:50And I wrote down the dialogue and I put hyphens in for every pause
- 41:54that Dennis Hopper used because I thought it was intriguing.
- 41:57He says, and I quote, he's drunk with his greed of his youth.
- 42:00Speed.
- 42:01Stop rhyming.
- 42:02You know what that means?
- 42:04Well, I'm not crazy, man.
- 42:06Yeah.
- 42:07And I put, are you sure?
- 42:08Yeah.
- 42:09Holy shit.
- 42:10Like that was the dialogue in sequence again, they just let him off the
- 42:14hook and let him do whatever he want.
- 42:15Yeah, because nobody wrote that.
- 42:16There's no way anybody wrote that.
- 42:18No, no, no.
- 42:19That's spur of the moment, man.
- 42:20That's three lines of Coke in, isn't that how he is in every movie?
- 42:24Mm-hmm.
- 42:24Do you guys remember that commercial from when we were kids?
- 42:26I think it was like the nineties and Dennis Hopper.
- 42:28Yes.
- 42:29It was like a shoe commercial.
- 42:30And he's like, it's his footprint, man.
- 42:33It's his footprint.
- 42:34Right.
- 42:34Do you guys remember that?
- 42:35Yes.
- 42:35Yeah, but it wasn't a Jordan shoe.
- 42:37It was like, was it Shaq or something?
- 42:39Yeah, something like that.
- 42:40Right?
- 42:40You Google it.
- 42:41It was unreal.
- 42:42Dennis.
- 42:42I've always associated him with that.
- 42:44It's his footprint, man.
- 42:46His footprint, man.
- 42:47Bruce Smith, Nike.
- 42:49Oh yeah, there.
- 42:49Bruce Smith, the NFL player, and Michael Irvin.
- 42:52I don't recognize Dallas Cowboys.
- 42:55He apparently did a whole.
- 42:56Set of them.
- 42:57Okay.
- 42:58Yeah.
- 42:58So it was like a Nike thing or whatever?
- 43:00Yeah, it was for Nike.
- 43:01I don't know.
- 43:01We were talking, he's no Mars Blackman.
- 43:03That's all I'm saying.
- 43:04Recently on the pod, we were actually talking about old
- 43:06commercials and remembering Tommy Vu.
- 43:08Oh yeah.
- 43:09Why so poor?
- 43:10Why you not rich like me?
- 43:12And before anybody thinks that's racist, guys, pulp the commercial
- 43:14on YouTube and tell me I did just do what he did on Tommy Vu.
- 43:19All right, well, enough of that, we gotta cut to the, uh, record exec party at the
- 43:22music studio or whatever the hell's going on, I guess the celebration party for
- 43:26signing a song or whatever's going on.
- 43:29And my next question is, where's the fiance?
- 43:31She's done, dude.
- 43:32Oh, okay.
- 43:33Did she leave?
- 43:33Did they have a, a deleted scene where they broke it?
- 43:36No.
- 43:37Okay.
- 43:37I think that was the breakup scene.
- 43:39I was so confused for a second.
- 43:41Grabbed her stuff and left early on in the movie.
- 43:43I thought that was her ending.
- 43:44But they were talking about setting a date or whatever.
- 43:46Eh, Steve, she had to go back to her home planet.
- 43:49She pulled a Poochie.
- 43:50She had to pull a Poochie.
- 43:51No, I was really confused for a second.
- 43:53'cause I thought he said, where's the Beyonce?
- 43:59What?
- 43:59Did I miss something in this movie?
- 44:01You were confused.
- 44:02You thought it was Valerian.
- 44:04That space movie where she dances and transforms.
- 44:06Yeah.
- 44:06Yeah.
- 44:07Oh, valerian In the City of a Thousand Planets.
- 44:10I like that movie.
- 44:11Speaking of Zero Charisma.
- 44:12Oh my God, that movie has zero.
- 44:14That could have been a cool movie, but not one character in it is
- 44:17interesting in the least bit.
- 44:18I kinda like Rihanna.
- 44:19You like the robot, we get it.
- 44:21Yeah.
- 44:21Yeah.
- 44:22So yeah.
- 44:22So then, uh, I don't know, we see Tina being introduced to Titus's
- 44:26mom from the, uh, the series, Titus and the Trio's all together.
- 44:30They're having a good time and they're like.
- 44:32They instantly see each other like, Hey man, we should go
- 44:34to the Hill, Mulholland Drive.
- 44:36And I'm like, what?
- 44:37What?
- 44:37What the fuck are we talking about?
- 44:39You're at a record party with blow as far as the eye can see, and you're like,
- 44:44yeah, let's get up on the hill and, I don't know, drink and drive Uhhuh.
- 44:47Yeah, that's addiction my friend.
- 44:49Get help.
- 44:50We cut to a completely useless scene of Harry Hamlin arguing
- 44:53with a parking attendant of him.
- 44:55What?
- 44:55That scene, you don't remember that?
- 44:57So Buddy leaves and goes to the mountain, right?
- 44:59He takes his Mustang and he takes off and he heads up to the mountain.
- 45:01Steve, Harry Hamlin realizes that Buddy left.
- 45:04And he's like, oh my God, where did he go?
- 45:05He goes outside and he's arguing with a parking attendant about moving.
- 45:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:10That car out of the way.
- 45:11But Eric, why did Buddy leave?
- 45:12Oh, because he feels like he's getting ripped off.
- 45:14Oh, 'cause he is.
- 45:15'cause he meets Tanner and Tanner's like, oh, hey, you're buddy.
- 45:18All right.
- 45:18I'm not gonna make this mistake twice, because he thought
- 45:20Steve was buddy earlier.
- 45:22'cause they, yeah.
- 45:22Look like they're twin brothers because of the pers and he basically
- 45:25spills the beans into like, oh yeah, thanks for selling your four songs.
- 45:28So the Cadillac Blue can do them.
- 45:30And he is like, wait, what are you talking about?
- 45:31Like, oh, Roger, you didn't tell him.
- 45:33Oh, anyway, it's gonna be great.
- 45:34You're gonna do great things in this thing.
- 45:36I gotta go, I gotta get some blow.
- 45:37And then your buddy's like, oh, you, you fucking lied to me, man.
- 45:41I'm gonna go to the hill and kill myself.
- 45:42And, and then, yeah, then we get the parking attendancy where he is like,
- 45:46yo, you could just move the car.
- 45:48Right.
- 45:48Fucking hell.
- 45:48Mm-hmm.
- 45:49Again, no one's likable this movie, there's no redeemable characters at all.
- 45:53Okay.
- 45:53So then we cut to the hill and Cal's already up there, as he always is.
- 45:57I assume when he is not at the garage, just screaming at
- 45:59children, teenagers or whatever.
- 46:01Basically like, oh man, this is bullshit.
- 46:03This we used to be cool, man, you, you, no one's gonna fucking challenge me.
- 46:09I need to get my record back, man.
- 46:11Did you hear what he said?
- 46:12No.
- 46:12Just before buddy shows up, he goes, mothers.
- 46:15That's what we used to call you mothers.
- 46:17Oh yeah.
- 46:18Stay at home mom.
- 46:19What?
- 46:21I'm glad you wrote half the stuff down.
- 46:22'cause Yeah, it's just ridiculous shit.
- 46:24I just kinda zone out when he starts ranting.
- 46:26I'm like, like, oh no, it's my uncle at the reunion again.
- 46:30Yeah.
- 46:31Yeah.
- 46:31We call him mothers.
- 46:32Call 'em mothers.
- 46:33You gotta say mothers.
- 46:34Mothers wanna go.
- 46:35Samuel Jackson.
- 46:36They're just mothers.
- 46:37And then he, but he shows up.
- 46:38He is like, I'll raise your ass.
- 46:40And of course Cal's like, I don't know man.
- 46:42You don't seem in the right head space.
- 46:44Then Cal commences to racing him in a truck.
- 46:46And I'm like, hold on a sec. Yep.
- 46:48It wasn't he fixing up that other car.
- 46:50Oh, we gotta save that for the finale.
- 46:51The Corvette.
- 46:52Yeah.
- 46:52So another bow tie.
- 46:54So Dan, correct me if I'm wrong, that's the same pickup that was
- 46:57used in the Expendables, right?
- 46:59As Barney Ross's truck?
- 47:00Yeah, it's the same truck.
- 47:01Yeah.
- 47:01Yeah.
- 47:02It looked like like a 53 or something like that.
- 47:04Yeah, it was with the round headlights and that grill.
- 47:06And I immediately was like, Ooh, if that was painted, sat in black.
- 47:09We got the Expendables truck.
- 47:10We're good.
- 47:11I was able to check it.
- 47:12It's a 56 F 100 in this and the expendables is a 55.
- 47:16Ah, I knew they were the same truck.
- 47:18See, I knew they were the same truck.
- 47:19There you go.
- 47:20All right.
- 47:20And that sweet little gear shift.
- 47:22Oh please.
- 47:23Oh man.
- 47:24And then of course Steve shows up like 10 seconds too late and
- 47:27is like, Hey, his buddy up here.
- 47:28Like, oh, you just missed him, man.
- 47:30And so then Steve's chasing behind him or whatever and they
- 47:34start trading pain a little bit.
- 47:36This has to be the single worst driving sequence in the entire film.
- 47:41Yeah, it was that night.
- 47:43It was very close.
- 47:44Camera shots and stuff.
- 47:45Just kinda like thrown together and like pan back and show the race.
- 47:49Speed it up if you have to.
- 47:50I did have like a moment though when Buddy leans out the window
- 47:54and like they can hear each other.
- 47:56They're going down MOHO and 70, 80 miles an hour.
- 47:58He's like sit on it and rotate.
- 48:00Sit on it.
- 48:01Yeah.
- 48:02What are you talking about?
- 48:03Like what is going on here and Cal? He had like a little uh, spotlight or whatever.
- 48:09He was like flashing over at him every once in a while.
- 48:11Right.
- 48:11Police light.
- 48:12Yeah.
- 48:13Good stuff.
- 48:13You know buddy.
- 48:14He's going a little too fast.
- 48:16How do we know?
- 48:16Because Steve says so when he is following behind.
- 48:18Takes that turn and right into a fucking gas line.
- 48:21Boo
- 48:25crash.
- 48:25Boom.
- 48:25Bang.
- 48:26Little buddy.
- 48:26Barbecue.
- 48:27No, no, no.
- 48:28So hear me out for a second.
- 48:29You said before Steve was 10 seconds behind and he had a one
- 48:33of the most horrific takeoffs.
- 48:35If he couldn't find it, he, he grounded out like it was horrible.
- 48:38So let's just say he's 20 seconds behind.
- 48:40He's got this record on the mountain and he can't catch a pickup truck.
- 48:44And a guy that's drunk in a, in a Mustang.
- 48:46Oh no.
- 48:46He caught up.
- 48:47He was just behind him like watching or something.
- 48:49I don't know.
- 48:50But there was a point though where he fell way back too.
- 48:53Like, again, this is where I say the driving sequence, it was awful.
- 48:56The worst driving scene in the whole movie.
- 48:58Yeah.
- 48:59When they're coming down, Cal being as drunk as he was
- 49:02driving the truck is one thing.
- 49:03Apparently he had enough ability to mess with the spotlight.
- 49:07He had to keep blinding.
- 49:09Mm-hmm.
- 49:09In the car while doing it.
- 49:10While he is driving.
- 49:11I'm like, this dude's a phenomenal driver if he can do that.
- 49:13Mm-hmm.
- 49:13He's phenomenal at something, that's for sure.
- 49:16He's high functioning.
- 49:17He's a guy man.
- 49:18During the, the night race with Buddy and Cal, did anybody look at Buddy's
- 49:22dash and see all the duct tape?
- 49:25I noticed that too.
- 49:26That was holding, basically holding the entire car together
- 49:29was a roll of duct tape.
- 49:30Yeah.
- 49:31That's how you know it's a real race car because all of Eric's cars use duct tape.
- 49:34Yeah.
- 49:35Actually zip ties Gorilla Tape.
- 49:37Strong man.
- 49:37It's got the speed holes punched in them.
- 49:39Eric's race cars have copper pipe and zip ties.
- 49:42A hundred percent.
- 49:44A hundred percent.
- 49:44And some wood in there too, somewhere.
- 49:46It's not a Tesla.
- 49:47It's not a Tesla.
- 49:50Uh, so buddies did, and then I ran down to Steve just starts.
- 49:54Whacking the hill with a giant stick that he found.
- 49:57Uhhuh and screaming buddy.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:00He is just whacking a stick.
- 50:01Yeah.
- 50:01So then, then we cut to Cal.
- 50:03He's uh, fixing his car at the garage as he does when he's not on the hill.
- 50:07Steve, he comes into work ready to go and uh, the boss comes
- 50:11out, you know, grizzly Adams.
- 50:12He is like, Hey man, why don't you just like take the day off?
- 50:15And he is like, I need this man.
- 50:16I need to.
- 50:17I just need to do something.
- 50:18Alright, cool.
- 50:19And then, yeah, Rick the boss or whatever, shows him a picture from
- 50:22like 15 years ago being like, yeah man, I used to go up on the hill too.
- 50:26Cow's fucking crazy.
- 50:28You don't need that shit Set.
- 50:29Barry Gibb.
- 50:30And I'm like, yeah, same voice.
- 50:32Finally, maybe Grizzly Adams is the real hero over this movie.
- 50:35Why did we pan in after that to a picture of Gomer Pile from like the 1950s?
- 50:40What was that picture?
- 50:42Was that him?
- 50:42Uh, I think that was, uh, grizzly Adams 15 years ago.
- 50:45It was a way before 15 years ago.
- 50:48Yeah.
- 50:48Well maybe he said 50.
- 50:50I don't know.
- 50:50So the picture they zoomed in on, so it had a picture of Rick, which
- 50:53was the shop owner, and then it zoomed in on Cal. It wasn't going.
- 50:56Oh, okay.
- 50:56So cow.
- 50:57Okay, okay.
- 50:59Oh yeah, that makes sense.
- 51:00I was like, what are we zooming in on?
- 51:02I didn't under, I was like, that doesn't look like him.
- 51:04Okay.
- 51:05Well, you know.
- 51:05Steve, after a day of work, he goes to see Tina.
- 51:08She's getting all dolled up and uh, like going to the Roxy, like
- 51:12obviously she's hanging out with the record executive stuff now.
- 51:15'cause you know, she's gonna get hers.
- 51:17And, uh, they have, I'd like to call it a fight, but it's more of like, so
- 51:20you're just gonna hang out with this guy?
- 51:21And she's like, well, yeah, because are we even a thing?
- 51:24Don't you have a fiance?
- 51:26I was waiting for her to pull that one out and like, bring that back into the movie.
- 51:30Nope, nope, no.
- 51:31None of that.
- 51:32No.
- 51:32And she says to him too, during this quote unquote fight, which
- 51:35was pretty tame, she's like, back and forth and back and forth.
- 51:37Where is that gonna take you?
- 51:38And he's like, nowhere.
- 51:40That's it.
- 51:40It's the most fast in furious line of the entire movie.
- 51:42Damn.
- 51:43Apparently.
- 51:44Where is it gonna get you?
- 51:45No, uh, yeah, I don't know.
- 51:47The limousine comes to like, pick her up is our unidentified guy, the chauffeur.
- 51:52Oh, big Tom or whatever?
- 51:53No, no, no, no.
- 51:54That guy was listed as chauffeur and the IMDV credits or whatever.
- 51:57Oh, okay, okay.
- 51:57Because he was really awkward.
- 51:59Yeah.
- 51:59He kinda looked like, uh, shit.
- 52:01The guy from, uh, WKRP in Cincinnati a little bit, I kept thinking
- 52:05James Spader for blacklist a little bit like, you know Yeah.
- 52:08Oh yeah, the rose glasses.
- 52:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:10Like he was definitely in witness protection, it looked like.
- 52:12And then the goodbye kiss, we have the goodbye kiss, right?
- 52:14Yeah.
- 52:15The goodbye kiss.
- 52:15And I'm like, wait, does this scene warrant a goodbye kiss?
- 52:19No, not really.
- 52:20Yeah, they, they say goodbye like, oh yeah, take it easy.
- 52:23Like, Hey, that feels like a commitment.
- 52:24He, he, he, are you gonna be here when I get back?
- 52:27You mean if you get back?
- 52:29So then we go to the mountain, as we always do every night, forever.
- 52:33They're like, Hey Steve, there's this guy from Downey who wants to race.
- 52:36Nah, I'm good.
- 52:37And I'm like, cool, then why the fuck are you there?
- 52:40He's waiting for cow.
- 52:42That's what he's waiting for.
- 52:43Oh, was he?
- 52:44Oh, okay.
- 52:44Yeah, he's waiting for Cal. He's waiting to see if he's gonna show
- 52:47up and then, and he doesn't until morning as we come to find out.
- 52:50But I do wanna pull a thread here.
- 52:52Dan, the guy that challenges Steve shows up in a two 40 Z. Two 80 Z
- 52:57depending on, you know what it was.
- 52:59Same body style.
- 53:00Did that sound like a straight six to you?
- 53:02I don't recall.
- 53:03'cause it's been like a month since I watched the movie.
- 53:04Dude.
- 53:05It loped, like it had a LS in it.
- 53:07That was engine swapped.
- 53:09It's like, what is up with the Z car?
- 53:11It looked cool though.
- 53:12I, I liked it.
- 53:13I would've liked to seen that race.
- 53:14I think that would've been interesting.
- 53:15But E Eric, what does that sound like?
- 53:17Dan could do a better impression of a Chevy V eight than I can.
- 53:20Oh, no, I need you to do it.
- 53:21Uh, we, we need the expert car talk style.
- 53:24We, we need the, uh, the, the movie Foley expert.
- 53:27Oh yeah.
- 53:27You need that
- 53:30sitting there loping.
- 53:34Yeah.
- 53:35But yeah, like I said, the morning rolls around and Cal pulls up.
- 53:38Steve realizing he doesn't need any of this bullshit, just drives away.
- 53:42Back home.
- 53:43Uhhuh roll credits, guys.
- 53:45What do we think?
- 53:46No, no.
- 53:46That's not what happens at all.
- 53:47We don't race.
- 53:48I yelled out.
- 53:49And so we race at dawn
- 53:55because they're racing their feelings.
- 53:58Oh God.
- 54:00Oh, it's an allegory.
- 54:05Yeah.
- 54:05And as they're, uh, they're racing along.
- 54:07Cal starts running.
- 54:08Time is speed.
- 54:09Speed is time.
- 54:11I wrote that down too.
- 54:12I am the road queen.
- 54:14The road the road is a construct.
- 54:16It's made of people, whatever the fuck he's yelling at.
- 54:19Right?
- 54:19Oh, but then he yells.
- 54:21'cause you're talking about the curse words earlier.
- 54:22They're going at it and he goes, we're faster than shit, man.
- 54:26Yeah.
- 54:27What?
- 54:27I don't know.
- 54:27I've had some fast shit.
- 54:29Somebody's obviously never eaten at the discount buffet in a Chinatown.
- 54:34Right.
- 54:35Gas station fish tacos.
- 54:36All I'm gonna say, oh, Steve, don't you remember?
- 54:39Uh, was it, uh, Lee Dumb Kim's or whatever?
- 54:42Yeah.
- 54:43You guys, 5 99, uh, Chinese.
- 54:45All you can eat Buffet in the middle of San Francisco.
- 54:47Chinatown.
- 54:48Brad knows all about House of Hongs.
- 54:50Yeah.
- 54:52That being said, that Corvette is a hot mess.
- 54:56I mean, it looks like something outta Mad Max.
- 54:58He's driving like a mental patient.
- 55:00It's the car from Corvette Summer, but driven by Dennis Hopper for six months.
- 55:04Yeah, right.
- 55:06Like the hoods popped off.
- 55:08All the sides are danging.
- 55:08He crashed, but he is like emotionally attached to it, so like he turned it from
- 55:13a burning ball of fire back into that.
- 55:15It's like a franking vet now.
- 55:16I think that's what we're supposed to get from that whole thing is that that car is
- 55:20resurrected from the ashes type deal and that's why he was resurrected, which is.
- 55:24Why at the end of this spoilers, neither of them will be able to be resurrected.
- 55:29Is the picture of Dorian Gray, they were connected the whole time.
- 55:32Uhhuh?
- 55:32Yeah.
- 55:32'cause cattle, uh, during the race, he like spins out a little bit, gets
- 55:35back into it and Steve sees that turn coming up, still has the burn marks
- 55:39that smells like buddy buddy burnt hair.
- 55:42Steve body hasn't even cooled down enough for the coroner.
- 55:44Haul it all.
- 55:45Yeah, right.
- 55:45The coroner's still putting them in the back, but then you hear him
- 55:48say, I don't want this anymore.
- 55:50Cal, it's all yours.
- 55:52Yeah, his drive along Cal, he speeds past right into a fucking construction
- 55:56site and spins out and off the cliff and boom, silver dream racer motherfuckers.
- 56:03He's dead at the end.
- 56:05And I believe this is what I turned to Steve, who was like, wait, what?
- 56:08What happened?
- 56:08Huh?
- 56:09Who is that?
- 56:10That's Cal. So much is happening right now in a movie where nothing has happened.
- 56:14That's his footprint, man.
- 56:16Right.
- 56:17I'll give this racing some credit to where they're actually like drifting that
- 56:20Corvette somewhere around the turns and everything and you can see it because
- 56:23it's in the morning light and stuff.
- 56:24It's not at night and you're just seeing headlights.
- 56:26Spurring all over the fucking screen.
- 56:28A thousand percent.
- 56:29And I agree with you, that's why I said the previous driving sequence
- 56:32was the worst in the movie by far.
- 56:34This one was better, it was more entertaining.
- 56:37It wasn't great because every once in a while you would catch
- 56:40a glimpse of the dashboard.
- 56:42Especially in the Porsche, they're doing 30 miles an hour.
- 56:44Like the gauge is literally reading 30.
- 56:47You're just like, wow.
- 56:48This is pathetic.
- 56:48Yeah.
- 56:48He was running it up to the red line at the 30 mile an hour in first gear.
- 56:52Yeah.
- 56:53That's why they did the erratic camera shots.
- 56:54'cause you watch 'em doing Mulholland Drive, they're really
- 56:57doing, yeah, like 20, 25 miles an hour on those turns and stuff.
- 57:01And you know, it's like a shutdown road on, you know how you see like
- 57:03professional drivers like you do in commercials, you by professional drivers.
- 57:07It's like, no, this is just, we'll fix it in post.
- 57:09So yeah, Cal's exploded.
- 57:11Steve walks up there, the turn and there's cal's little, uh, stopwatch
- 57:15or whatever, picks it up, blocks off.
- 57:18Roll credits guys.
- 57:19That's King of the mountain.
- 57:20No, but wait, they play Dangerous Strangers after he clicks the stop.
- 57:24Oh yeah, they play the full song again.
- 57:26Yes, they do.
- 57:27Let's Be Dangerous Strangers.
- 57:30So was the song a metaphor too?
- 57:32Were they dangerous strangers, Cal and Steve?
- 57:35No.
- 57:35They were no Their love, no each other for years, man.
- 57:40They had to erase their emotions and they were only dangerous to themselves.
- 57:43And others on the road and everybody in their crew.
- 57:48I love the pause there.
- 57:49They were only dangerous to themselves, themselves and others.
- 57:53It's a metaphor.
- 57:54Anyway, Tanya, would you recommend this movie again?
- 57:57I mean, she already did.
- 58:00She recommended it to us Fools.
- 58:02Yeah, exactly.
- 58:03I've never seen it.
- 58:05How can I recommend it if I've never seen it?
- 58:07I suggested it.
- 58:09We gotta blame somebody, Tony.
- 58:11Somebody's going down for this and it ain't gonna be me.
- 58:13That's right.
- 58:13I mean, is this the worst on the ranking totem?
- 58:17Is this at the bottom?
- 58:19This is not the worst movie we have done in this here.
- 58:21Collaboration.
- 58:22I will say that exactly.
- 58:24I'm right there with you because I'm gonna admit I do not even come
- 58:28close to holding Dan's record of watching Trading Paint nine times.
- 58:33I did watch this twice because I wanted to refresh my memory after two weeks abroad,
- 58:38and so it was re watchable the last chase.
- 58:41It's re watchable every 20 years.
- 58:43If we're gonna compare movies like that.
- 58:45The stuntman, I don't know that I could rewatch that movie.
- 58:48You know what I mean?
- 58:49No.
- 58:49That movie's great.
- 58:50You are complaining about the stuntman.
- 58:52It's up there with the fall guy.
- 58:54Fall guy.
- 58:54Yes.
- 58:55I could rewatch the fall guy.
- 58:56This is definitely rewatch, watchable.
- 58:57I did pick up a little bit more the second time I watched it.
- 59:00Just because airports and you're bored and you just kind of plowed through it.
- 59:04Yeah.
- 59:04He picked up on more of the, uh, romance or romances as it were this time around.
- 59:09I have you to thank for that.
- 59:11I could definitely see it now.
- 59:14So does Steve go back to his fiance at the end?
- 59:16Yeah, he goes back to work.
- 59:18He's gonna run off with the rich record producer, duh.
- 59:20Oh yeah.
- 59:21There we go.
- 59:21Two completed this game.
- 59:22Tina The Wonder Kid, right?
- 59:24No.
- 59:24Buddy's the songwriter.
- 59:26He's gonna steal all the buddy songs.
- 59:27Oh yeah.
- 59:28Shit.
- 59:28He's got all of his notes at home and he is like, yeah, yeah, I could play.
- 59:31It's on the piano.
- 59:32Uh, shake your ass.
- 59:33Watch yourself shake ass.
- 59:35Show me what you're working with.
- 59:39So let's see what Brad thinks.
- 59:40Brad, would you recommend this movie?
- 59:42What did you think?
- 59:42Uh, no I wouldn't.
- 59:43No.
- 59:44What it, it's not the worst, like you're saying.
- 59:47It is not the worst movie we've done.
- 59:48I think the Stunt man takes the cake for that one.
- 59:51You guys did not like the stunt man.
- 59:53No, they didn't.
- 59:54That is baffling.
- 59:55Senior moment.
- 59:56Have you guys forgot against All Odds?
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:59And you guys shit on the Stunt man.
- 1:00:01What was the one with, what was it?
- 1:00:03John Travolta Trading.
- 1:00:04Pain Trading.
- 1:00:04Pain Trading.
- 1:00:07Okay.
- 1:00:07That, I think that's our one out of 10.
- 1:00:09Yeah, it's a toss up.
- 1:00:10Yeah.
- 1:00:10No, the Lamborghini movie was really bad.
- 1:00:13Oh yeah.
- 1:00:14Shit.
- 1:00:14I think we watched a lot of bad movies with you guys.
- 1:00:17So is it with us or are there just a lot of bad car movies?
- 1:00:21I mean, yes.
- 1:00:21Here's the thing.
- 1:00:22Steve and I have seen a lot of bad movies, and I will put it this way.
- 1:00:26The worst car movie that we have seen is like a five on the bad movie
- 1:00:31radar because at least it has cars.
- 1:00:33There are movies that are that bad with no cars.
- 1:00:36I would lump this in with Corvette Summer and some of those other movies
- 1:00:39where you can watch this on a weekend when you got nothing else going on.
- 1:00:43Put it on in the background.
- 1:00:44And it's not terrible, but it's not good either.
- 1:00:46Look, it's no gone in 30 seconds.
- 1:00:47I'm just gonna say that.
- 1:00:48Gone in 30 seconds.
- 1:00:50That the web short version, it's the prequel to gone in 60 seconds.
- 1:00:54It's the What about shoplifting?
- 1:00:56My, my, my attention span was gone in 30 seconds.
- 1:00:59Yeah, it was that Rockford files thing.
- 1:01:02So Dan, what do you do?
- 1:01:03Would you recommend it?
- 1:01:03Dan recommends all the movies.
- 1:01:05I'm with you on this, Eric, for the fact it's, I don't
- 1:01:07hate it, but I don't love it.
- 1:01:08It's kind of middle tier for me where I agree you could
- 1:01:11put it on in the background.
- 1:01:13I didn't hate it.
- 1:01:14It's just certain things about it made me cringe though.
- 1:01:16'cause like you were saying, some of the inside shots where it showed
- 1:01:18they were doing 30 mile an hour, did you also pick up on the fact
- 1:01:21that it had the tack in the dash and then the tack mounted on the dashes?
- 1:01:24Yeah.
- 1:01:24Yeah.
- 1:01:25Attacks everywhere, man.
- 1:01:26Like why do you need two tacks?
- 1:01:27I thought they were like different cars too, but it's like, oh no, no.
- 1:01:30Yeah, this is the same one.
- 1:01:31You can see 'em like in the same shot a couple of times.
- 1:01:33Yeah.
- 1:01:34Did you guys notice, Dan and I have come to an agreement for
- 1:01:37the first time on a movie review.
- 1:01:39What?
- 1:01:40What?
- 1:01:40Mark it down.
- 1:01:41Alright, how about you, Izzy?
- 1:01:42What do you think about this movie?
- 1:01:44A hundred percent.
- 1:01:44It's not the worst movie we've seen.
- 1:01:46Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:46But there's so many better car movies you guys, a thousand percent.
- 1:01:49Since you guys like this movie so much, would you consider watching Silver
- 1:01:53Dream Race or knowing it's the exact same movie, but with Ooh, motorcycles?
- 1:01:57No, no, no.
- 1:01:58My Curiosity has the best me, so I'm gonna watch it.
- 1:02:00Just watch the last three minutes.
- 1:02:01It's the only part worth watching.
- 1:02:03Just watch this movie.
- 1:02:04And then about the time Cal's about to crash, switch over to Silver Dream Racer.
- 1:02:08We still need to do Biker Boys since you opened the door for
- 1:02:11suggesting movies for next time.
- 1:02:13Oh boy.
- 1:02:13Wait.
- 1:02:14We're not done with this one, but go ahead.
- 1:02:16Yeah, they're talking about Biker Boys and Silver Dream Racer.
- 1:02:18Torque.
- 1:02:19Yeah.
- 1:02:19Torque Baby.
- 1:02:20No, no.
- 1:02:21Oh, torque.
- 1:02:22I'm gonna take it to the far other extreme.
- 1:02:25We're gonna go to the Land of the Rising.
- 1:02:26Son, let's do Thunderbolt with Jackie Chan.
- 1:02:29Oh, you guys don't wanna do Thunderbolt.
- 1:02:31That's right.
- 1:02:31The very first, the original Fast and Furious.
- 1:02:34Oh, the black and white one.
- 1:02:361950. Yeah.
- 1:02:36The Roger Forman one.
- 1:02:37Yeah.
- 1:02:37Yeah, I have that.
- 1:02:38Yeah, we could do that too.
- 1:02:40Thunderbolt.
- 1:02:41Just think.
- 1:02:41There's no dialogue that we could understand.
- 1:02:43So the reviews could be really short.
- 1:02:45This would not be the first time Steve and I reviewed a movie that was in Japanese
- 1:02:48language and there were no subtitles and we did not know there was a dub available.
- 1:02:53That's Black Tie Killers on the Broadband podcast.
- 1:02:56Well then now we're take quick commercial break.
- 1:02:58Oh.
- 1:02:58But when we come back, we have Mob.
- 1:03:00Oh thank God.
- 1:03:01Fun facts and what we learned from King of the Mountain.
- 1:03:05King of the Mountain.
- 1:03:11There's so many podcasts out there.
- 1:03:13How do I find the one for me?
- 1:03:18For so long.
- 1:03:19I've searched for podcasts all over, but none of 'em seem to fit my needs.
- 1:03:23Where's my Nick Cage Pissing Fire podcast?
- 1:03:26Where's my monkey tickling?
- 1:03:27I couldn't find it anywhere until I found everything I learned from Louis's
- 1:03:31podcast with Steve Nzi, and now I get to hear about all the monkey tickling.
- 1:03:35I won Baby.
- 1:03:38So many podcasts out there are All Talk and no Congo.
- 1:03:42That's why I listen to everything I learned from movies Greatest
- 1:03:46Living Actor, Nicholas Cage.
- 1:03:47Of course, that's why I listen to everything I learned from
- 1:03:51movies, one-liners, plot holes, gratuitous boobies.
- 1:03:55Fun fact.
- 1:03:56That's why I listen to everything I learned from movies.
- 1:04:00See if everything I learned from movies is right for you at EILF movies.
- 1:04:03That's everything I learned from movies on Twitter, Facebook, or Patreon.
- 1:04:09Free on all the major podcast catchers.
- 1:04:12And we're back.
- 1:04:12Oh my God, Steve, those are the greatest ads that I've
- 1:04:14added in the history of adding.
- 1:04:16Oh, she said it.
- 1:04:17They get better every week.
- 1:04:18Ah, babe.
- 1:04:19I think I'm just gonna have another, uh, Sockeye.
- 1:04:21Dagger Falls.
- 1:04:21How much?
- 1:04:22Yeah, I think I'm just gonna go for that.
- 1:04:23All right.
- 1:04:24I'm my top.
- 1:04:25Oh, he's top.
- 1:04:26Oh, sorry.
- 1:04:27Oh, so hop up for H. He's just covering my top with his now he's sucking the head.
- 1:04:34What did we suck buddy?
- 1:04:36Alright.
- 1:04:37Yeah.
- 1:04:37Not a bad beer.
- 1:04:38You been on.
- 1:04:38Number two, my dad choking on his drink, which appears to be in a Mountain Dew.
- 1:04:43Yes.
- 1:04:43Say a Mountain Dew Cup.
- 1:04:44He says it's water, but it's the beast, the beast mode.
- 1:04:49So it's Mountain Dew and Monster Energy drink.
- 1:04:51Got it.
- 1:04:53It was just a shot of Jack From the box.
- 1:04:55Yeah.
- 1:04:55From the dashboard of a citro in.
- 1:05:00Yeah.
- 1:05:01So would uh, any of you be interested in any fun facts about this movie?
- 1:05:04Absolutely.
- 1:05:05Only if there fun facts.
- 1:05:06Super fun facts 'cause fun, fun facts.
- 1:05:09Steve has driven a citron, by the way.
- 1:05:11Which one?
- 1:05:11Uh, the Citri lingo.
- 1:05:14The, the fucking van or whatever.
- 1:05:15Oh, the van.
- 1:05:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:17Those are still, that thing gets like 70 miles to the gallon though.
- 1:05:20It's fucking amazing.
- 1:05:20Yeah.
- 1:05:21We rented one as a camper fan when we were in Iceland.
- 1:05:23I just had a Citron as a rental.
- 1:05:25Yes.
- 1:05:26Which one?
- 1:05:27The Air Cross.
- 1:05:28Spectacular.
- 1:05:29It was terrible.
- 1:05:30Meanwhile, fun facts.
- 1:05:31Super fun facts.
- 1:05:32What do you got for us, Steve?
- 1:05:33Alright.
- 1:05:34Rotten tomatoes, no critic reviews.
- 1:05:36What?
- 1:05:36Any guesses on what that audience score is though?
- 1:05:39Yes, because I saw it as soon as Fandango opened in my face.
- 1:05:42Yeah.
- 1:05:43Damia.
- 1:05:43Fandango, I have to abstain.
- 1:05:45You can't not see it.
- 1:05:47Yeah, I did not see it.
- 1:05:48So I will guess 47.
- 1:05:49I'm gonna guess 35.
- 1:05:51Uh, I'm gonna go with my super generous 17%.
- 1:05:53Oh God.
- 1:05:54Well Matt Manang was right on at 47%.
- 1:05:57God damn.
- 1:05:57Says the guy who said he didn't see it.
- 1:05:59Yeah, right.
- 1:06:00I totally didn't see it.
- 1:06:01Probably 47.
- 1:06:02Not looking at it right now.
- 1:06:03You're just pulling it outta my ass.
- 1:06:0547. I'm office can be on these all the time, so you gotta win one
- 1:06:09every We agreed on something Dan.
- 1:06:11Yeah, it's a red letter day.
- 1:06:12Take him to Vegas, put it all on black.
- 1:06:15Yep.
- 1:06:15$2 million budget.
- 1:06:16I'm just gonna guess.
- 1:06:171.8 US gross.
- 1:06:19Not a big movie, I don't think.
- 1:06:21Uh, 1.8 million worldwide.
- 1:06:22Wait, so you're telling me they spent 2 million bucks to make this movie?
- 1:06:26Well, those cars probably half a million in the cars.
- 1:06:29Dennis Hopper, man, that's a lot of Coke.
- 1:06:30Yeah.
- 1:06:30Dennis Hopper got 1.5 and you know, uh, Elvira, that's where the money went.
- 1:06:36Oh, yeah, there you go.
- 1:06:37And the film is based on an article in Titered Thunder Road by David
- 1:06:42Berry and published in New West Magazine on July 31st, 1978.
- 1:06:46The piece told that the Mulholland Racing Association organization
- 1:06:49whose membership were youths, who raced cars across 23 mile stretch of
- 1:06:53Mulholland Drive in Las Vegas Hills.
- 1:06:55The movie also has been attributed to an article by David Berry that
- 1:06:59was published in the LA Times.
- 1:07:01Okay.
- 1:07:02Is that all you're gonna say about that?
- 1:07:03That's all I got about that.
- 1:07:04Go on.
- 1:07:04Okay.
- 1:07:04So the reality is, so that article, it's based off a man named Chris Banning,
- 1:07:09who is the king of the mountain.
- 1:07:11And he built a purpose-built nine 11 RSR, specifically to race on Mulholland.
- 1:07:17It's known as the nine 11 Mulholland.
- 1:07:19He went to Germany, they gave him specs and data to build this car.
- 1:07:24This car was in the Peterson Museum.
- 1:07:26He still owns the car, I believe, but like he did things like slant the
- 1:07:30windshield to make it more aerodynamic, all the suspension, all this stuff.
- 1:07:35He's like a builder on top of everything.
- 1:07:37Oh wow.
- 1:07:37So it's loosely based off him.
- 1:07:39And apparently the impetus for him to build this RSR out of a regular,
- 1:07:44like RS nine 11 was, he was racing on there and some dude in some like
- 1:07:48Chevy pickup truck rolled up and he had a hard time getting around him.
- 1:07:53That was Cal baby.
- 1:07:54He's like, I gotta build something here.
- 1:07:56And then he went and he built this monster.
- 1:07:58Nine 11.
- 1:07:59Alright.
- 1:08:00Applause for bringing the super funnest car.
- 1:08:03Fun fact to any crossover episode ever.
- 1:08:07Mad props to Tanya.
- 1:08:08That was very well done.
- 1:08:10Excellent, excellent research there.
- 1:08:13He had to completely customize the car to be the pickup.
- 1:08:16That's all I'm saying.
- 1:08:16Yeah.
- 1:08:17A pickup.
- 1:08:17No, I think, I believe he got around them.
- 1:08:20'cause there's an interview you can watch.
- 1:08:21They've got posted on the Peterson Automotive Museum.
- 1:08:24So it's a really short video of him talking.
- 1:08:26He's sitting in front of the car and he is talking about it
- 1:08:27and he talks about that moment.
- 1:08:29I have to go watch it again.
- 1:08:30I think he got around him, but then he was like, because Mulholland
- 1:08:33is really rough and bumpy.
- 1:08:35Yeah.
- 1:08:35Which the regular nine 11 is not designed for it.
- 1:08:38So he'd completely tune the car to drive on Mulholland and like that's it.
- 1:08:43And the car is known as the nine 11 Mulholland.
- 1:08:47It's known as nine 11.
- 1:08:48Yes.
- 1:08:48Yeah.
- 1:08:49Very cool.
- 1:08:50Never forget, you know what, I've been slick.
- 1:08:52Maybe we need to go back and watch it again.
- 1:08:54Nobody's gonna do this.
- 1:08:55Is at the Porsche shop is to see if the car happens to be in the background.
- 1:08:59Because if you think about it, it's a 76 9 11.
- 1:09:02This RSR Mulholland, the movie was in 80.
- 1:09:05There's a high probability, it might be a cameo in the background because I
- 1:09:08wanted to go, but I didn't have time to research the nine 11 that that old guy
- 1:09:12was pushing, which was RSR Motorsports.
- 1:09:14It was a nine 11 race car belonged to somebody's team.
- 1:09:17They show a 74 9 11 Carrera, RSR, but the one being pushed in was a 1979.
- 1:09:2414. Well, there you go.
- 1:09:24But anyway, it'd be cool to see if this car was in the background somewhere.
- 1:09:27Never know.
- 1:09:28There you go.
- 1:09:29And uh, Harry Hamlin the star of our movie.
- 1:09:31He replaced Brad Davis.
- 1:09:33I'm the lead role of Steve, but Davis was allegedly fired due to his
- 1:09:37alleged drug problems because this movie didn't have enough of those.
- 1:09:40He would've fit right in.
- 1:09:41Yeah, right.
- 1:09:41And you guys might be asking, who the fuck is Brad Davis?
- 1:09:44'cause I had to look it up.
- 1:09:45He was old Georgian Roots.
- 1:09:47Oh, chariots of Fire, midnight Express.
- 1:09:49That's about all I got.
- 1:09:50I didn't really recognize him for anything else.
- 1:09:52The make and model of the car that Steve Drives is supposedly supposed
- 1:09:56to be a silver 58 Porsche 3 56.
- 1:09:59Sports or convertible, but in fact was a replica.
- 1:10:02Oh yeah.
- 1:10:04That was an Outlaw 3 56.
- 1:10:06Yeah.
- 1:10:07I mean it, it might be a Beetle, but there was a company out in California that
- 1:10:11was building three 50 sixes like that.
- 1:10:13Yeah.
- 1:10:13Apparently it was a Volkswagen Beetle convertible.
- 1:10:16Oh, interesting.
- 1:10:16And uh, the last one I got guys, this was the comeback movie for Dennis
- 1:10:20Hopper who had been filming in Europe for years because he was banned from
- 1:10:24Australia and America apparently wouldn't insure him for a while.
- 1:10:28I don't know what.
- 1:10:28Yeah.
- 1:10:28Apparently this list as his comeback movie to the Americas.
- 1:10:31Oh.
- 1:10:32But now we've reached the most important part.
- 1:10:34Hmm.
- 1:10:34What did we learn from king of the.
- 1:10:37Tanya as Queen of the Mountain.
- 1:10:38Would you like to go first?
- 1:10:39Well, I think I shared what I learned 'cause I went into a deep dive
- 1:10:42and found out there was actually a loose thread to a real life story.
- 1:10:47Yeah, well done, well played.
- 1:10:49And that way.
- 1:10:50Still better than Fast and Furious based on an article.
- 1:10:54Was it Racer X by some guy that was in some magazine
- 1:10:58and now we're 12 movies deep.
- 1:11:01Brett, how about you?
- 1:11:01I learned that there is no king of the mountain.
- 1:11:04The mountain cannot be beaten.
- 1:11:05Ooh, very prophetic mountain is undefeated.
- 1:11:08Yes, the house always wins.
- 1:11:11The mountain always wins.
- 1:11:12Speed is time and time to speed.
- 1:11:16Your car's like a runaway knife, man.
- 1:11:19How about you Mount Man, Dan, not Mount Mike.
- 1:11:21I'm just gonna say like, Tanya's little tidbits of information were great
- 1:11:24and I just like the fact that car had to be custom made to get around
- 1:11:26to That's, that's a great thing.
- 1:11:27You're gonna, you're gonna hold that over my head.
- 1:11:30Oh my God.
- 1:11:32Couldn't get that Porsche around that Chevy.
- 1:11:36I can hear it now.
- 1:11:37The next barbecue, that's all we're gonna be talking about.
- 1:11:40They don't tell you that it was Nicki Lauda driving the The pickup.
- 1:11:45Oh, that makes a difference, right?
- 1:11:46Yeah.
- 1:11:48Stunt driver ton Sena behind the wheel of the Chevy.
- 1:11:54I winning.
- 1:11:54How about you Eric?
- 1:11:55So I learned a couple things.
- 1:11:57I mean mad props to Tanya.
- 1:11:58I didn't go down that rabbit hole.
- 1:12:00I was loving the whole 3 56 outlaw thing.
- 1:12:02Jackie from too close for comfort, Debra VanValkenberg, whatever, so she can sing.
- 1:12:06And I thought that was cool.
- 1:12:07I actually thought she had a pretty voice and the song aside,
- 1:12:10I think she did really well.
- 1:12:12But for me, going back again to a car related, what did I learn?
- 1:12:15I learned that you can stack mount two oil coolers in the space of the
- 1:12:20rear grill on a 3 56 slash beetle.
- 1:12:23Did anybody else notice that?
- 1:12:25That was not a wing.
- 1:12:26Those were two oil coolers on the back of the car.
- 1:12:29So I learned you could get away with that.
- 1:12:31Super safe.
- 1:12:32There you go.
- 1:12:32How about you, babe?
- 1:12:33I learned that fiances are just like.
- 1:12:35A construct man, and they'll disappear at anytime.
- 1:12:38And really, the love between a man and a woman is nothing compared to the
- 1:12:42love between two men and a sandwich.
- 1:12:48That was a heated scene.
- 1:12:50That was a heated scene.
- 1:12:51That was the most emotion we got out of anybody in this
- 1:12:54whole movie, of all the scenes.
- 1:12:55I was waiting for that porn music to started up.
- 1:13:00Yeah.
- 1:13:00I I don't think there was a better subway commercial than that.
- 1:13:04Jared had nothing on that.
- 1:13:07You got any other foot lungs?
- 1:13:09Is that what Jared looked like in the eighties?
- 1:13:13That's a heard salami.
- 1:13:15Uh, see, I learned you gotta ride the edge if you wanna win the edge of the sandwich.
- 1:13:19Yeah.
- 1:13:20At the edge of the sandwich.
- 1:13:21Yeah.
- 1:13:21Gotta be fast as shit.
- 1:13:23And you didn't sell 'em out, you bought yourself in.
- 1:13:26See, you're gonna wear that as a shirt.
- 1:13:28Yeah, right.
- 1:13:28I didn't sell you out.
- 1:13:29I bought myself in.
- 1:13:32That would make a great t-shirt.
- 1:13:33It's just a picture of a dude with no face and a perm and instead
- 1:13:37of his face it says those words.
- 1:13:39It would be fantastic.
- 1:13:39I would wear that.
- 1:13:40Dude.
- 1:13:40So many people you have me sold at no face in a perm.
