- 0:00Well back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Yukon has Xavier Sunday eleven
- 0:05thirty. The pregame twelve noon is the tip. They try to run their
- 0:08winning street to eight in a row. We're joined by Kamana Young, the
- 0:12associate head coach of the hust He's lots to catch up with the Kamani.
- 0:16We were talking to Dan just a few minutes ago about three point shooting coach,
- 0:20and I know you are. I always say this, You're one of
- 0:23the best shooters I've ever seen on any coaching staff anywhere in the country,
- 0:26NBA or college. Appreciate that you got some guys here who are lighted up
- 0:33lately and now not the last two games not so much. But you get
- 0:37guys shooting the ball from outside that arc like you got a caravan doing it
- 0:41obviously in cam Spencer. But I'm the guy. I'm interested in his Hassandhi
- 0:45Aara. Now he's made eight of his last twelve. What's going on with
- 0:49him? Have you talked with him and worked with her? You must have,
- 0:51because he's he looks different this year. Yeah, I mean, listen,
- 0:55I wish I could take credit for it, but you know, we
- 0:57get up a ton of shots in practice. You know, a lot of
- 1:00guys been spending extra time in the gym, and I think, you know
- 1:06what he is. It's also a product of him taking great shots, you
- 1:10know, and him having an approach to the game, and he's gonna affect
- 1:12the game defensively, He's gonna affect the game with with his energy, and
- 1:17then he steps into a great you know, a great shot with confidence,
- 1:19and those are the ones that usually go down for you. Yeah, you
- 1:23said you used the word confidence, and that's a word in sports we always
- 1:27talk about. Is it mental all mental or is some of it physical?
- 1:33In other words, you trust what you're doing and then you don't think about
- 1:36it. Yeah, it's probably a little bit of both. But I think
- 1:38confidence come from the hard work that you put in. When you know you've
- 1:42been putting hours and hours of time, you know, working on your shot,
- 1:47when you get an open look, you know, you feel confident letting
- 1:49it go because you've done it so much, you know. And I think
- 1:53that that's where where Hasa is playing at right now. You know, he's
- 1:56been been, you know, putting in the time. He's been putting in
- 1:59the time watching film. You know, he's been extremely coachable since he's been
- 2:04here. You know, what you're seeing right now is what we recruited him
- 2:07for. You know, this is the version of Hassan that you know we
- 2:12saw when when when we brought him in. Yeah, we're loving it,
- 2:15believe me. We were talking to Dan as well about Steph Castle last game.
- 2:20They were laying off them. They were just daring him to shoot Villanova.
- 2:23What are you seeing with his shot? He looks like he's got a
- 2:25pretty good jump shot. To me, he just hadn't gone in very much.
- 2:30What do you have to work on with him to get him, you
- 2:32know, completely confident about what he's doing on that offensive end. Yeah,
- 2:37people don't realize this as much as they probably should. But it's not a
- 2:39lot of freshmen in the country that shoot well. You know, come up
- 2:44to college. You really don't. You don't see a lot of freshmen with
- 2:46high shooting percentages. That's it, that's a reality. You know, their
- 2:51heads are spinning, you know, they're trying to figure out what defense we're
- 2:53in, the physicality, the enormity of of you know, what they're dealing
- 2:58with, especially at a place like this, So you know, Listen,
- 3:01I think STEP's got great shooting mechanics. You know, he puts the time
- 3:06in as well. You know, his strength is he his composure. You
- 3:09know, he doesn't get rattle. People are playing off him. He's stepping
- 3:13in the great shots, shooting them with confidence. But you know, as
- 3:15we like to tell him, don't just fall in love with that. You
- 3:17know, they're playing off you for a reason. They're afraid of you coming
- 3:21at them. They're afraid of living in the paints. So you still got
- 3:24to find ways to play to your strength. But when you got an open
- 3:28look, you got you know, you just got to trust the work that
- 3:30you put in, step into it with confidence and knock them down. Yeah,
- 3:34and one thing about him, I've noticed the mid range. He's a
- 3:37pretty good shooter. I mean he can step into stuff fifteen feet, seventeen
- 3:39feet, whatever it may be, from all kinds of angles. So I
- 3:43mean that's going to be a positive. Yeah, absolutely. I mean,
- 3:46listen, the game has changed with the analytics, you know, and we're
- 3:50a huge opponent of that. We want to shoot rim two's and catch and
- 3:53shoot threes. You know, those are those are the highest percentage shots that
- 3:57you can get in our game these days, you know, so we play
- 4:00that way, but it's also a feel for the game. You know,
- 4:03he's in rhythm and the guy's back and off of him, and he can
- 4:06you know, pound the dribble and get into a shot straight up, straight
- 4:10down with good mechanics. You know, we'll live with that with him.
- 4:13But his strength is his playmaking, his physicality, his ability to get to
- 4:17the paint, his rebounding. He's been a great defender for us. He
- 4:21impacts the game in so many ways that shooting is you know, listen,
- 4:28that's gonna come. Yeah, I say often on the air during the game,
- 4:30like I would not want to have to be guarded by him. He's
- 4:34not fun. I mean, what's the strength of his defensive approach is lateral
- 4:39movement. He just seems so tough to get by. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 4:43He's got great size for us position. You know, he's got great feet.
- 4:47You know, he can move his freak well. And then he's athletic,
- 4:50you know, so listen, he's pressuring you out there his feet and
- 4:53moving and then once you get to the rim, he's got the size and
- 4:56athleticism to challenge you. So you know, yeah, definitely, that's a
- 5:00superpower. His is the defensive end. Yeah, it comes second nature,
- 5:03it looks like to me. All right, we'll be back in a moment
- 5:06with Kamani Young will wrap the show up. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 5:10Coaches Show on liar Field.
