- 1:21because we back to back. We back the back. I called myself
- 1:25like YO, took a week off, you know, get some health issues
- 1:30done. Come back. Let's just do an episode to recap what's happened since
- 1:38then talked about the whole Kendrick Lamar Drake metro Booming future Jake Cole situation and
- 1:47was satisfied, uploaded and boom. J Cole responds not only with a response
- 1:56to Kendrick's challenge lyrically seven minute drill. We'll talk about it, but also
- 2:01he drops what, in my opinion, was a highly anticipated mixtape. I
- 2:07guess called Mike delete later. And typically I don't do episodes solely based off
- 2:19of one album review. I don't do that no more. I kind of
- 2:23incorporate that within the entire show. But since this is a special occasion,
- 2:28including a hot topic on social media as far as the battle goes, or
- 2:32if you want to use that word battle, I felt the need like we
- 2:37should talk about it real quick, you know what I'm saying, talk about
- 2:38the project, review the project, yes, I've listened, and I've listened
- 2:42more than once, and also talk about j Cole's response and how I feel
- 2:46about that and what could come next. Who knows what's going to happen this
- 2:50weekend. Kendrick lamarket, I'm not going to do another episode. I'm Kendrick
- 2:55answer after I've already recorded and uploaded this. I'm not you ain't gonna hear
- 3:00what I got to say until the next show next week, But I'll say
- 3:07this, hip hop is at least the conversation around hip hop is reinvigorated.
- 3:15The conversation around hip hop lyricism is reinvigorated. When we have situations like this,
- 3:23high profile artists who have a certain level of skill that choose to battle
- 3:30each other. People go online, people talk, people show their allegiance.
- 3:37It gets kind of crazy. So let me put a few disclaimers out there
- 3:42for those who may be new to my talent. If you like what you
- 3:45hear or see, subscribe. We're trying to get to five hundred subscribers.
- 3:49We need your help make it happen right now. But the album or the
- 3:58mixtape or whatever it's supposed to be. For those who don't know, J
- 4:01Cole has been teasing this project for a little while now, maybe you were
- 4:08a little blinded by the fact that this whole battle thing came into play,
- 4:13and now you because I saw some people like yo, J Cole gave him
- 4:15a whole project dog. This project was coming out anyway, we've been talking
- 4:19about it. He's been doing promo for it, Mike delete later, the
- 4:25hashtag you can find it weeks ago. Right, it was always a part
- 4:30of the plan now response to Kendrick that's new, but Mike delete later dropped.
- 4:36The only reason why I call it a mixtape and not an album is
- 4:40because the album is also being promoted, and that's somewhere down the line.
- 4:46It's called the fall Off, right. So everything that we've seen thus far
- 4:51from j Cole, as far as features versus here and there and obviously this
- 4:58project are all kind of like promotional tunes leading up to this big album from
- 5:03him, which I appreciate because you know J Cole tends to He doesn't he
- 5:12doesn't completely go away between albums. He'll give you features here and there.
- 5:15But lately I felt like, you know, his feature has been crazy lately,
- 5:19so there's a little bit of hunger. And for a dude like him,
- 5:24who you know, kind of made his way on some mixtape stuff first,
- 5:30it seems only right for him to do something like this. So Mike
- 5:36Delete Later, which is available everywhere, it's even as a mixtape, is
- 5:42about what twelve songs and forty three minutes. As far as the total time,
- 5:49features include Cameron Young, Dreau, Gucci, Maine, Abs So in
- 5:57Daylight for You, Battle rap people including people from his what's his name?
- 6:03How you say a homie name? Bass Boss? I don't know. I
- 6:08kind of like him, but I don't think I ever heard him say his
- 6:11name, and I'm not a huge fan. Kind of like when I hear
- 6:15him, but not enough to go listen to more music heard the first album.
- 6:20But nevertheless, if you watch this channel, if you listen to this
- 6:26podcast, you know our review albums by giving it at least three listens.
- 6:30At least The first listen is for impressions. The second listen is to listen
- 6:36a little deeply to the lyrics and the music and the concept and the sequencing
- 6:43of the project. And the last listen is kind of to confirm my thoughts
- 6:47positive or negative. And for those that can't wait or don't care about the
- 6:53context in which how I feel, just want to know that you like it
- 6:56or you dislike it. I'll say I like it, but let me explain
- 7:02to me, Mike delete later is nothing that a J Cole fan has never
- 7:10seen. It's just not It's just new J Cole. It's J Cole showing
- 7:16the different styles he's shown throughout his career. That includes giving you bars on
- 7:24some boom back stuff, that includes you know, wrapping over trap sounding beats
- 7:30with a different flow, but that also includes and it's really only one track,
- 7:36and it's probably the J Cole I like the least. The singing J
- 7:44Cole, raise your hand if you. I mean, obviously somebody likes it,
- 7:49that's why he's done it throughout his career. But I don't see why
- 7:55he does it. Maybe he likes to do it, or maybe he goes
- 7:58maybe he go to show he performed the song where he's singing Paul Abdo.
- 8:03Yes, that's a real thing, and he see the reaction from the crowd.
- 8:09He knows they like it when I do that, right, And he
- 8:13might even hear people like me who like not don't Yo, why are you
- 8:18doing that? And the only reason why, the only reason why I don't
- 8:22like it, It just don't sound good to me. Right, It's not
- 8:26the worst singing I ever heard in my life. It's just to me unnecessary
- 8:31for someone who's so skilled on the other end of hip hop that this singing
- 8:37on a whole record is a gimmick, and it's not even a gimmick that
- 8:43works for you. That's my whole point. It's not that he can't sing.
- 8:48He could do what he wants. It's just the simple fact that I
- 8:50don't think it works for j Cole to me as a fan. Some people
- 8:56like it, Like I said, for me, it's an instant skip like,
- 9:01oh word, straight up, Now tell me the way that skip button
- 9:03a boot. If I want to hear Paul ab due, I listen to
- 9:07Paul ab dude, and I'm not even gonna listen to Paul lab dude.
- 9:09So there you have it. But don't get it confused. There's plenty of
- 9:16bars on here. There's just some very dope records on here, Like I
- 9:20like the first song Pricey what Ari Lennox like that joints dope, Crocodile tills
- 9:26He's dope. I'm not excited by Ready twenty four featuring Cameron, which is
- 9:33basically I'm ready the twenty twenty four version. The original one was Cameron and
- 9:39Dipset's, most notably Juwe Santana. And what I think I don't like about
- 9:43it is it's not a spin on that beat, it's basically that beat,
- 9:50and j Cole is kind of rhyming. Well, his delivery is like Julee
- 9:58Santana, And I kind of feel like Jews Santana was a big, like
- 10:03an equally as big part of the success of that record back in the days.
- 10:09Now, I get that Cam and Jules and Jimmy and them they kind
- 10:13of like on different sides and all that, but don't do that record if
- 10:18you ain't gonna have Cam and Jules Jews Santana on there, like and then
- 10:22you basically doing his cadence Like it just felt weird. Again, j Cole
- 10:28way nicer than Jules Santana. To me, I've never been the biggest Jews
- 10:33Santana fan, but I'm not gonna take away things that he did back then
- 10:37that I thought it was dope, and his verse I'm Ready was a part
- 10:41of that energy like it was. So it just kind of felt weird.
- 10:48But if we call it a mixtape, well this is this fair game,
- 10:52Like I'm not mad at it. So there you have it. Other songs
- 10:56that I like, Sticks and Stones is dope for if you want some bars
- 10:58away whatever. And again, overall, I think if you're a J Cole
- 11:07fan, you're gonna like this because he's giving you exactly what you want.
- 11:13I'll say it again, I doubt the majority of the fans are like,
- 11:16why he's not singing more? Nobody's saying that. But if you like J
- 11:22Cole spitting over a trap beats, if you like J Carr having J Cole
- 11:26having bars and boom back beats and you know, being real lyrical, I
- 11:31think you'll like this joint. Honestly, tweak a couple of records and you
- 11:35probably could have called this the final album. So it makes me wonder what
- 11:39the fall off is gonna sound like, because if it's anything close to this,
- 11:45I think it might be a wasted moment. And the only reason why
- 11:48would be a wasted moment is because I think this Kendrick and Metro boom booming
- 11:54and future and this whole pick asides battle thing, it's kind of got in
- 12:00the way of J Cole's rollout for this album, right because I've seen people
- 12:07online talking about the record were about to talk about, right, the response
- 12:11to Kendrick and not talking about the project, like do y'all even like the
- 12:18project? You know? And I'll say this, since we're getting into seven
- 12:24minute Drill. That's the response record their songs on this very project that are
- 12:31better than that, and that's kind of a shame. So the song is
- 12:37called seven minute Drill and has a beat switch starts out with a beat that
- 12:43beat and flow from J Cole. That really sounds like something Drake would do
- 12:50more than anything, and maybe that was the plan, but that seems kind
- 12:52of stupid. I mean, well, let Drake take the first half then,
- 12:56but Drake probably like, nah, you're gonna get the boom bap and
- 12:58then try to have me do what I do on some this stuff. But
- 13:03then it switches to a beat that's more hardcore and you get a little bit
- 13:07more detailed bars from J Cole. He still didn't say his name, He
- 13:16still sneaked this and like Kendrick said, and I think that's what's disappointing about
- 13:22it. Now, some people will be like, what you want is light
- 13:24jabs. You're right, it's light jazz. It is like jazz. You're
- 13:30absolutely right, light jabs, But we're not here for light jazz. Because
- 13:37the thing is is Kendrick's bars were like jazz, but his energy was like
- 13:43I'm ready for a full on fight. So to me, it's like Kendrick
- 13:48swung on you and he didn't land, and it's like you purposely miss your
- 13:54punch because he your brother. I'm confused, J Cole, what what are
- 14:03we doing? You don't have to put everything out, but that position up.
- 14:09It's like sliding the fly, but nobody believes you. Fam I don't
- 14:13care what Kendrick does on records. Now, he's still k dot from Compton
- 14:20in the minute he goes in that bag. You have we learned nothing from
- 14:24Ether? Have we learned nothing from Ether? Listen, children, adults,
- 14:33y'all get it, but we're gonna talk to children real quick. J Cole
- 14:39quoting Takeover. Basically, four albums and twelve years. I could divide,
- 14:46calling the first album a classic, saying the second one was boring, but
- 14:54they gassed it. You're talking about the pipper Butterfly. Where were you and
- 15:01when was this ever? I know that get Richard died trying and to pimple
- 15:09Butterfly. Two very different albums, two very different kendreds. I don't disagree
- 15:18with that, but that's what that's what we give him flowers for, right,
- 15:22like being different. That's why at least most of us. That's what
- 15:28I thought. That's what we were saying up until j Cole said something different.
- 15:33We were giving him flowers because every time he came out with an album,
- 15:37it wasn't the same as the other ones, and most people thought them
- 15:41were good, thought it was good. Now what he had to say about
- 15:43missed him around the big Steppers. I could see some people feeling that because
- 15:48one thing about that album, why it was great from an artistry standpoint.
- 15:56Concept albums to that degree don't really have that much replay value in a genre
- 16:03where people like to get dressed to this, get hyped for that. You
- 16:11know, oh it's summer time. You're not putting on big If you got
- 16:14to choose between Kendrick My albums, you're never putting on that one for any
- 16:18of those molds. But are you doing that with Ja Cole? I don't,
- 16:26and I own all his albums, even the one I don't like,
- 16:30and it's the same thing Kendrick. So it just seemed like what he was
- 16:33saying was uneven because jay Z also said something, Ja Cole, we don't
- 16:41believe you you need more people. We can't. You can't say that about
- 16:47them, especially you cannot say that about the pimper Butterfly. That's just invalid.
- 16:52But what the children tend to miss is that quoting that line so heavy,
- 16:59as if Kendrick has been putting out so many duds since Good Kid,
- 17:04Mad City, and they forget when another man who j COO's quoting on a
- 17:11song he's quoting, thought another dude wasn't the dude he used to be,
- 17:18and he lepped around and found out with a song called Ethan. Now,
- 17:23revisionists, because that's what we're really talking about. Revisionists would like to say
- 17:30jay Z won the war, which is so stupid because if jay Z lost
- 17:36the battle, there is no what war? What are you talking about?
- 17:38This Hip hop is all battling until it's done, you know what I'm saying.
- 17:44Anything outside of that does not matter, because fates can change and Nods
- 17:48can be rich and jay Z could be poor and then Nids help him out.
- 17:52I'm not gonna say Nas won the war because he helped jay Z out.
- 17:55He helping a man out, you know why, because they were cool
- 18:00and that's basically what this battle in this song is. Because I feel like
- 18:06when Kendrick, well, not with Kendreck when J Cole was talking about Kanye,
- 18:11for example, I could feel more venom and reality and what he was
- 18:19saying about Kanye than anything. Well, he's just responding to Kendrick because it
- 18:26feels like he feels the need to respond, you know, because he got
- 18:32to protect his reputation in some way. But it also comes across as lazy
- 18:37to lean on a few things that aren't necessarily true, you know, and
- 18:44forget what we think you could have told me in a million years that J
- 18:48Cole feels this way about these things. It's essentially why he keeps saying my
- 18:52brother, my brother, my brother. He don't really want to do this.
- 18:56But it's fine because I don't look at it as an alpha J Cole.
- 19:00Hell no, it's not an l for J Cole. Honestly, I'm
- 19:03good with these two responses, you know, right here, hold on,
- 19:07like my my joint going crazy because we we had an earthquake hand Jersey,
- 19:14so everybody text him. Uh. But I'd be cool if the light jazz
- 19:21between Kendrick Lamar and J Cole ended right here, because we want that other
- 19:27dude, and I say we I'm talking about Kendrick and Compton. Okay,
- 19:33we want all three we want to do, we want the catalyst for all
- 19:38of this. See that's the problem. You know what I'm saying. You've
- 19:41ever been in a situation on on your block, group of friends, maybe
- 19:47a team, maybe you play for a team, and you know the wrong
- 19:51two dudes of fighting when they probably should be jumping the instigator and instigated quiet
- 20:00because he's just so happy that the smoke ain't on him. That's what Kendrick
- 20:07need to do. Kendrick need to just say yo, I apologize cold d
- 20:11D D da da da, but don't play me the We can spa or
- 20:14whenever, but back to Aubrey that's what we need. So long story short,
- 20:23might delete later. Is a good project from j Cole. I mean,
- 20:30the brother been on point the this is cool in some ways, I
- 20:36gotta be honest. In some ways it kind of spoils my anticipation for this
- 20:40project because now it's all people are talking about, and it's that tip of
- 20:45the tongue and it's hard to digest the other records without looking like is he
- 20:52talking about him on that? Like it just I don't know. It's taken
- 20:55away from my enjoyment. But nevertheless, it's still hot. I think there's
- 21:00a couple of songs here and there I skip no way near skipping like half
- 21:07the project? Is it in my top five of the year? N because
- 21:11it feels like a mixtape. It feels like here's some songs that I'm not
- 21:17gonna put on the final album. That's what it feels like, and I
- 21:22don't see any problem with that. If you're a person who a J Cole
- 21:26fan and you know you're anticipating his new album, but you need something to
- 21:30hold you over, and I think this is dope enough. What do you
- 21:34think about J Cole's new project, Mike delete later? Are you feeling it?
- 21:40Are you a J cole fan? Does it make you a J Cole
- 21:42fan? Or do you feel about his response to Kendrick Lamar light bars?
- 21:48Thought they should have been better? This was good enough, like jazz from
- 21:52both but you're waiting for the main course. Leave your comments in a comment
