- 8:35[SPEAKER_04]: If you ask me, Jack, my friend, we have got some...
- 8:40[SPEAKER_04]: God, for it's a oh, man.

- 8:44[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to give you, I'm going to give you the funny one first.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to end with the cringe.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_04]: Oh gosh.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_04]: Because the cringe leads into our episode a little better.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_04]: Jack.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_04]: I titled this video.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_04]: Gosh.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_04]: I titled this video.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_04]: Preacher uses force to kill piano player.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_04]: I'm gonna play this for you.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_04]: This one, you really got to see.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_04]: Like you really got to see it.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_04]: I, it's one of these videos where the more you watch it, the harder that I laugh.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so here you go.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_07]: This, this, hey.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_07]: What?
- 9:26[SPEAKER_07]: It's mid.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_07]: It's mid.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_07]: It's mid thought.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_07]: Although we got to watch this again.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: Watch this again.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_07]: She went full go or not.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_07]: It's talk.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, for those who for those who for those who are listening you've got what looks like a Very charismatic church service probably it looks like in one of the African countries it's somewhere somewhere We have the side of the world
- 10:13[SPEAKER_04]: and you've got a very, uh, charismaticly dressed individual who's preaching and he's walking across the stage speaking into the mic and then all of a sudden he almost seems like he gets like distracted.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_04]: It looks like the piano player like insulted his mama or something like that because he's walking and he's like,
- 10:34[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, and he turns and he does like a force push like everyone can open to general grievous and goes And the piano player just topples just like a full horn dog the keyboard Just one thing I'm gonna watch is what we're saying
- 11:03[SPEAKER_05]: This is one of the greatest videos that I've ever liked.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_05]: Hey, hey!
- 11:09[SPEAKER_06]: He even made the sound effect.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_05]: I don't think he gave himself sound effects.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_05]: And the keyboard player, the keyboard player just rolls with it.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_05]: It's like, yeah, this one.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_05]: Hey, hey!
- 11:21[SPEAKER_07]: He's really going to see it.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_07]: And there's something he's taking place right here.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, it's a highman dude.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, yes!
- 11:31[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, yes!
- 11:33[SPEAKER_07]: Oh my gosh.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, that is that you have to watch out like five times.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: You have to to get you have to wait in with that.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's so gosh.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_04]: It's so good.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_04]: All right, Jack, we got one more.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_04]: And this one, I'm going to try that next Sunday, or play out over there.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_04]: Right in the right way, when the middle of a, you know, singing a song, I'll be like, hey, bam.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_04]: Force push.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, Jack, this next one.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_04]: This is what happens when, let me find it here.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_04]: This is what happens when you are trying so desperately.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_04]: to stay relevant.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_04]: Oh gosh.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, this is what I want you to do for me.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_04]: And listeners, I want you to do this as well.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_04]: I'm gonna play you this clip.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_04]: And this one, this one, it doesn't require video.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_04]: Audio is all you need.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_04]: I want you to tell me how long you make it through this video until you make the cringe face.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_04]: Tell us in the comments if you're on YouTube or on the socials.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_04]: Tell us in the comments how long
- 12:48[SPEAKER_04]: You made it through this video before your teeth did the little... You know what I'm talking about right?
- 12:55[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_04]: All right, here we go.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Tenop famed because enough with the brain rot, there's no more elves.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: We're only taking holy W's today.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: We are standing on business and blessings.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: God did not make you to be an NPC.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: You're the main character.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Driped out in his love for real for real.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: Today we're here to catch big vibes, big faith, and leaving that brain rod at the door.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: So why don't you turn to your neighbor and say, you're looking low, keep blessed this morning.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: All right, squad, let's lock in, get that holy wrist up because it's our praise, era, and worship.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like we just got the ultimate victory, Royal.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go!
- 13:47[SPEAKER_06]: five seconds.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_06]: Took me five seconds to know that this is going to be bad.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_06]: I want one of the kids on the stage to punch him in the cap.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_04]: That I hate that so much.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_04]: There's so much about that that I hate with a white hot passion.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_04]: Like that's there's no one should have to tell you.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, maybe let's not do that.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_04]: Let's not go.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_04]: Let's go.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no, no.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_04]: No, that's like the sixty-year-old guy that buys the Ferrari and dies us here black and he thinks no one's gonna notice this is like this is like the family the family guy mean where they're all like putting their hands in the middle Yeah, and then then and then Shamus puts his peg leg and then he's like yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 14:57[SPEAKER_04]: that's uh so Bible by way of transition by way of segue jack you know what keeps churches from falling into the trap of trying to be so relevant that you end up making a fool out of yourself
- 15:16[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, I could say many things.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_04]: Many things, many things.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_04]: One of the main things is Liturgy, right?
- 15:23[SPEAKER_04]: Having a robust, liturgical service that is based primarily on the Word of God that follows the regulative principle as in how God has regulated, how He has commanded, how He desires to be worshiped.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_04]: We follow that.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_04]: Instead of what we believe will attract people, what the culture wants, what we think the felt needs are of the particular church and shaping our worship experience around that.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_04]: a liturgy, truly, truly helps because it gives us guardrails.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_04]: It keeps us from going skew and out into right field of what the purpose of the Lord's Day is and how we are to be conducting ourselves on it.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_04]: So we have been engaging in this liturgy series and it's been great.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_04]: I've been really enjoying this.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_04]: I know I said at every time, but I'm a huge liturgy nerd.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just a local church nerd.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_04]: Anything that has to do with like the structure and the polity and the how we do think I just I I really nerd out about it.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_04]: It's a lot of fun.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_04]: So last week and we have to we have to apologize to our listeners because inadvertently
- 16:36[SPEAKER_04]: With how busy the last couple weeks have been, our mind has been out the door, out the door.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_04]: And we skipped a very essential, a very important and a very beneficial part of the liturgy and skip straight to preaching of the word.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_04]: So normally what goes on in a in a I would say a more traditional liturgical service.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_04]: What happens before the preaching of the word is you have what's known as the pastoral prayer and we completely skipped over that we went straight from I think it was assurance of pardon.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_04]: reading of the word I can't remember straight to preaching of the word and we skipped pastoral prayer altogether and my apologies because I'm the one that kind of structures the the episode orders here and I ran right over that so we're going to we're going to remedy that today and although we're a little out of order
- 17:42[SPEAKER_04]: and what I mean by out of order is that how we have structured the episodes of this series is in order of how most liturgical services go in terms of kind of their their order of service if you will.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_04]: So traditionally most of the time and again, every church does a different and there's no there's no reason like there's there's no right way or wrong way to do it, but most of the time you see
- 18:11[SPEAKER_04]: the preaching of the word, pro-seating, the pastoral prayer.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_04]: So many pastoral prayer usually comes first and then usually leads into either another song or leads straight into preaching of the word.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_04]: So, got a little out of order, but that's okay because we're still going to cover it today.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_04]: So, the pastoral prayer
- 18:32[SPEAKER_04]: is a vital, and I would say very important part of a liturgical service.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's the time set aside for the specific purpose of prayer, right?
- 18:45[SPEAKER_04]: And obviously in the title, it's led by one of the elders, one of the pastors, we use those terms autonomously because that's what the Bible does, right?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_04]: And it's the pastoral prayer, the structure of it, the contents of it,
- 18:58[SPEAKER_04]: can vary depending on the church, depending on the elder team.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_04]: Some have much more structured flow to them.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_04]: Some are much more, I would say, I don't want to say laid back because that denotes that there's not care or purpose put into it.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_04]: More casual, perhaps, how about that?
- 19:19[SPEAKER_04]: So depending on the church that you go to, depending on kind of the tradition of that church or the theology of that church, the pastoral prayer is going to look different.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_04]: But what I wanted to cover real quick is why the pastoral prayer is important.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_04]: So why do we do it?
- 19:36[SPEAKER_04]: I'd like to define what the pastoral prayer is.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_04]: Right?
- 19:40[SPEAKER_04]: And then getting to some of the the purpose and benefits of what the pastoral prayer does in the Lord's Day service, both individually and corporately.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_04]: And then we'll get into some practical tips and stuff that I've got later on here.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_04]: But Jack, before I get into that, does your church do a pastoral prayer?
- 20:01[SPEAKER_04]: And if so, what's kind of the idea behind it or the focus behind it?
- 20:05[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, we've started to slowly incorporate that more and more into our later G. I feel like we do it a couple times a month now.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_06]: We don't, I don't think we do it every Sunday, but we do it a couple times a month.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_06]: So, um, a lot of it has to do with one of our pastors going up on stage.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_06]: and proceeding to pray for about ten minutes about I think our immediate area, so the immediate needs of the church, what people are going through in the church, praying for that, praying for local municipalities, cities,
- 20:46[SPEAKER_06]: that people live in, so mostly Tacoma, but also Pualip.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_06]: South Hill, the unincorporated little townships in between Tacoma and Pualip and stuff like that that folks live in as well too.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_06]: praying for leaders, praying for guidance, praying for provision and the ways of wisdom and if we're going through
- 21:18[SPEAKER_06]: something specific so right now I can think of we've had a pastoral prayer about finding a building that'd be suitable for us to set for all the church to me at one service yeah so praying for that specifically because we don't want to be in that middle school forever so we're trying to make it like
- 21:36[SPEAKER_06]: within the next couple years trying to find that building and then proceeding to probably sell off our building because it's just the way in which our building has been built we can't add on to it without getting permanent
- 21:54[SPEAKER_06]: about the was back to talk to you.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_06]: Absolutely.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_06]: And then on top of it, there's a wetland area too.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_06]: And so we're really regulated on how we build and what we do and all that.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_06]: So I think that's part of the issue too is that our current building can't really sustain us.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_06]: So we need another building and then we're probably going to have to sell off our old building as well to get that going.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_06]: But yeah.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_06]: So there's been our the I think the
- 22:24[SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, I think starting with the congregation and then you slowly start to move out and out and out and out.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, based upon your proximity, based upon what's happening in whatever, right?
- 22:37[SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, I'm trying to think recently we had, I think we had a pastoral prayer about older gentleman who was a deacon at our church.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_06]: he was a deacon for a long time and then he had health problems so he stepped off the deacon team and we kind of honored that and then he recently passed away and so we were talking about his kids I mean he has full room kids but just him and his wife and his wife's older as well too so how do we take care of her as well too and
- 23:17[SPEAKER_06]: you know praying for her and praying for her needs and praying that you know there's there's I think there's a decent population of our church that's older and so it's kind of walking and and and kind of talking and praying about those things that come up that you know there'd be wisdom
- 23:38[SPEAKER_06]: uh, when certain things happen as well, too, with their issues and yeah, it comes to hospice and stuff like that.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, um, so it just depends on where you're going with it, but I would say the smaller concentric circles start with your congregation, move to your local general regional area, and then go from that all the way up, maybe into like national worlds, kind of,
- 24:06[SPEAKER_04]: concentric circle dynamics so yeah and that's that's what's really cool about different local churches is that that that model and it will will actually talk about that a little later um our church does the opposite and that it's the same model but we start wide and then go yeah and then go in right so it's really cool seeing and this is what I love just about liturgical services is that
- 24:33[SPEAKER_04]: The structure is normally for the most part the same, but you get different flavors and applications depending on the particular church.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_04]: And that's really, really cool to see.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_04]: I really like that, right?
- 24:45[SPEAKER_04]: So as we're talking about the pastoral prayer, let's hop into it, right?
- 24:51[SPEAKER_04]: So a working definition, this is not a scientific or a strict theological one, but to kind of help the understanding of what a pastoral prayer is,
- 25:03[SPEAKER_04]: A pastoral prayer is the time set aside in the liturgy where one of the pastors leads to the congregation in a time of prayer with the purpose of interseeding on their behalf to the Lord.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_04]: It's important to understand that there's a very specific purpose to the pastoral prayer.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_04]: You are engaging in certain things for certain reasons.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_04]: you step up there as one of the pastors and lead the congregation in this prayer, right?
- 25:33[SPEAKER_04]: It's a very, it's a very priestly function, although obviously we confess that Jesus Christ is our high priest, right?
- 25:41[SPEAKER_04]: He fills that role perfectly on our behalf.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_04]: Pastoral ministry often
- 25:48[SPEAKER_04]: Often contains very priestly and profit-like duties, right?
- 25:53[SPEAKER_04]: Just like the profit per claims thus safe to the Lord to the people, that is the job of the pastors to take the word of God and say, this is what the Lord of God says, therefore go
- 26:05[SPEAKER_04]: and do, right?
- 26:07[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously, Christ fulfills that perfectly for us, but just as under shepherds of Christ, we have a role to play with that function.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_04]: Same with the priesthood, right?
- 26:21[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously, Christ is our mediator.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_04]: He stands between us and the father, no one's discounting that.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_04]: But a pastor's job, one of their functions,
- 26:32[SPEAKER_04]: is to go to the Lord on behalf of their people, to lift their people up to the throne room of grace that they might receive the help and the hope that they need.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's a very priestly thing, right?
- 26:43[SPEAKER_04]: And the pastoral prayer is a outflow of that function for the pastor, right?
- 26:51[SPEAKER_04]: So a pastoral prayer
- 26:55[SPEAKER_04]: Why is it important?
- 26:56[SPEAKER_04]: Let's hop into kind of why we think it's important and then we'll hop into kind of what what it does.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_04]: Pastoral prayer is important.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_04]: I kind of have three three things here first.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_04]: The first one is this is because prayer, and I don't know if this is what you have found Jack, but in the circles that I've run in kind of growing up, and then obviously talking to the different pastors that I know of and the different circles that I can attend to run in, prayer is often lacking.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_04]: both in the lives of the believers individually, as well as the church corporately.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_04]: Prayer is often one of the first things that loses its emphasis, especially on the Lord's Day.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_04]: And the pastoral prayer is a good way to combat that reality, when she say,
- 27:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I think I think too there's a book that can help people out as well to resource time here we go.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_06]: So I have to put it in the notes.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_06]: I think it's I think it's just called prayer by Tim Keller.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, yeah.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_06]: It's a really I feel like it's not it's not so much about the mechanics of this is how you should pray.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_06]: It's more about talking about why prayer is important and even just like if you're not much of a prayer, if you're not much of a person who prays, sometimes the ways in which prayer can get sparked back into
- 28:33[SPEAKER_06]: your daily rhythms is through looking at different prayers and and Keller talks about this as well too and so looking at value vision looking at the different prayers I have two different books one of them is the prayers of the early church fathers the other ones the prayers of the reformers and kind of seeing how they prayed as well too yeah and then
- 28:58[SPEAKER_06]: not so much like trying to match word for word what they did but just like look at the ways in which they're and I know we're gonna talk about this just a little bit further the ways in which they have adoration towards God the ways they are confessing the ways they're giving thanks giving the ways they're giving simplification or asking for simplification those things are important in understanding so I think that's really good book to kind of
- 29:29[SPEAKER_06]: just walk through because he does he he gets more amount of on a practical level and just be like I think he starts to book up like well you thought I'm just going to write about prayer and like how to pray and how to figure this out and it's like I'm really not doing that I'm actually more trying to get at the root of why we don't pray
- 29:47[SPEAKER_06]: or why we need more prayer, or how can we go about sparking that back into our spiritual rhythms?
- 29:54[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and he keys in on a great need that we have as individuals, right?
- 30:01[SPEAKER_04]: And that we have as a church, right?
- 30:05[SPEAKER_04]: We've talked about before, I think it was during preaching the word, the importance of
- 30:11[SPEAKER_04]: of covering your sermon prep in prayer and the importance of that and how that's often overlooked.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_04]: I think what we find and I do, man, I, I'm at the front of this line.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_04]: Prayer is often not the first thing that I run to when I'm struggling.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_04]: If I am struggling emotionally or spiritually or I'm dealing with anxiety or I'm frustrated or there's just some sort of disorder in my life, right?
- 30:38[SPEAKER_04]: Prayer is often not the first thing that I go to.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_04]: I'm often trying to figure it out of my own, trying to figure out the solution.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_04]: And it's amazing how often I forget the grace that is at my disposal.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_04]: Whenever I want it, having direct access to the Lord on high, who knows me better than I know myself, knows my struggles, knows my pain.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_04]: and is there to comfort me?
- 31:10[SPEAKER_04]: Why would I not go there first?
- 31:12[SPEAKER_04]: Well, there's lots of reasons, right?
- 31:15[SPEAKER_04]: The sinful nature I still wore against, the distractions of this world, my own pride, fill in the blank, right?
- 31:21[SPEAKER_04]: The point is prayer is not emphasized enough, both in our lives and in the church.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_04]: And the pastoral prayer is one of the answers to that is that we set aside, dedicated time.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_04]: to pray and in doing so showcase the importance and confess the importance of it.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_04]: Second prayer benefits the prayer.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_04]: We just talked about that.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_04]: There's great benefit in prayer.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_04]: There's benefit for us because we are reminded of the truth that we are confessing as we're praying, that the Lord is sovereign, that the Lord is good, that He loves us, He cares for us, His plan is perfect, and we don't need to worry.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_04]: And all the other things that come into a pastoral prayer, right?
- 32:07[SPEAKER_04]: So prayer benefits.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_04]: us and we don't often go to it enough.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_04]: Third and finally, prayer informs and it directs our hearts and our minds.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_04]: And this is what we're going to get into here is that when one of the functions of a pastoral prayer
- 32:27[SPEAKER_04]: is this.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_04]: And this is something to remember when you are engaging in the pastoral prayer.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_04]: If you're an elder or pastor and you are given this task, sometimes it's given to the deacons, right?
- 32:39[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's pastoral prayer.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's in the name, but you know, again, depending on the church you're in, right?
- 32:43[SPEAKER_04]: Different flavors.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_04]: We're not going to make a mountain out of a molehill, but if you are engaging in the pastoral prayer, something that you should remember as you are leaving the congregation, is that one of the functions of the pastoral prayers that you are displaying and teaching the congregation how to pray.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_04]: You are showing through your prayers where our focus should be.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_04]: where our mentality should be, where our hearts and our minds should be focused when we pray.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_04]: That's one of the great benefits of the pastoral prayers, and it is actually a time of great not only encouragement, but great edification, and that we are learning together.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_04]: how to pray biblically?
- 33:32[SPEAKER_04]: What should our prayers look like?
- 33:34[SPEAKER_04]: Our prayers are often very lackluster.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_04]: I know that very true in my life.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_04]: My prayers often consist of just the things that I'm struggling with or just the things that I need.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm sure other people listening can raise their hand in that too, right?
- 33:55[SPEAKER_04]: But prayer is supposed to be so much more than just telling the Lord what we need.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_04]: And a pastor or prayer, a good pastoral prayer delivers that.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_04]: And it shows what prayer looks like and what it can do for our minds, but our hearts as well.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_04]: Jack, anything on any of those before we hop into how pastoral prayer directs our focus.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_04]: No.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_04]: Love it.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_04]: Here we go.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_04]: We're hopping in.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_04]: Jack's like, please, let's not make trying to streamline.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_04]: I get you.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_04]: I tell you, man, I like nerd out over this stuff.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: Like this would be a combo.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_04]: Jack and I would have probably over two hours if we were together with cigars.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_04]: Pretty much.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_04]: We're trying to we're trying to condense it here.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_04]: So just like Jack explained, and I'm going to
- 34:48[SPEAKER_04]: my perspective, keep this in mind.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_04]: My perspective is not the norm.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_04]: My perspective is what I have done and how we do things at my particular local church.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm not saying that this is the only way to do it.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_04]: This is how I have
- 35:08[SPEAKER_04]: I have seen it done and I think it's very beneficial, right?
- 35:11[SPEAKER_04]: So Jack described the way the his church does pastoral prayer and that they start with a congregation and they work their way out.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_04]: That's really cool.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_04]: I love that.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_04]: I love that kind of transition focus, right?
- 35:23[SPEAKER_04]: For us at Redeemer, it's the opposite.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_04]: We think of the pastoral prayer as an ever closing circle and that we start wide.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_04]: Right, and we start with with broad strokes and then work our way in to the very specific.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_04]: So to help demonstrate that, I have worked up in my head.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_04]: three, three focuses, three ways that the pastoral prayer should focus our hearts and focus our minds.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_04]: First one is this.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_04]: The pastoral prayer directs our focus upward.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_04]: Right?
- 36:10[SPEAKER_04]: It focuses our affections, our minds, and our hearts upward toward the Lord.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_04]: A pastoral prayer should start, I believe, with exulting God.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_04]: We proclaim the purpose and the reason that we are there.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes this looks on focusing, so something I like to do, when I start a pastoral prayer, is each time I'm up for pastoral prayer, something that I try to do is I pick a different attribute of God.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_04]: that the prayer centers around.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_04]: So sometimes it's this holiness, sometimes it's his grace, sometimes it's his omniscience.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_04]: You pick the truths of God that your prayer, that the theme, that that that that theme leaves its way throughout the prayer.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to do that.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_04]: I find that effective and I find that beneficial.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_04]: Again, is we're training our congregation, we're training people how to pray.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_04]: The best prayers begin with proclaiming and confessing truths about God, who he is and what he has done.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_04]: So it's a focusing on who God is, it's exalting him.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_04]: It's Thanksgiving, right?
- 37:22[SPEAKER_04]: It's thanking the Lord for who he is, thanking the Lord for his goodness.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_04]: Right?
- 37:29[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's often a time of confession, right?
- 37:34[SPEAKER_04]: Confessing our sins, even though confession of sin is its own thing, right?
- 37:39[SPEAKER_04]: That part of directing our focus upward is Lord, like thank you for who you are, forgive me for the ways that I have fallen short, right?
- 37:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_04]: But then thanking him for the gospel, praising him for the gospel.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_04]: All right, is that pastoral prayer begins with focusing the church, the minds and the hearts of the people, their affections, focusing it upward and pointing to the Lord and saying, He is why we're here to worship, He is good.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_04]: Let's begin our prayers with focusing on Him.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_04]: So it directs our focus upward.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_04]: That's that that's the first one anything on on on that on that jack now.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_04]: It's spawn on okay.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_04]: What's the next one jack?
- 38:25[SPEAKER_04]: What's number two?
- 38:32[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, the directs are focused inward.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_06]: As I've gone forward.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, outward.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_06]: It's outward next.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_06]: So the upward and then directs are focused outward.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_06]: So prayer for the lost prayer for the country, state, missionaries, other faithful churches.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_06]: I kind of talked about this and we kind of went over this concentric circle stuff, but yeah.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_06]: but yeah that outward I mean the adoration first and then starting to I think this is the this isn't so much of the confession piece but this is the thankful giving thanks giving and then asking for supplication for other things as well too gone going out there area and then yeah church yeah and I think it's a great opportunity to for people to see like
- 39:19[SPEAKER_04]: You know, there's a lot of talk these days about what the church's place is in the culture, right?
- 39:27[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a lot of really bad takes out there.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, right?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_04]: In terms of how the church should engage with culture, should the church be defining and taking over culture?
- 39:38[SPEAKER_04]: Should we be shutting culture all together?
- 39:40[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of, there's a lot of takes most of them are very bad.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_04]: This is what we know, right?
- 39:46[SPEAKER_04]: We know that we are called to be in the world, but not of it.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_04]: And we know that we should be seeking the good of the city that we're in.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_04]: And one of the primary ways that we do that is through prayer.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_04]: It should be through prayer.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_04]: There's nothing wrong with during that pastoral prayer taking time to pray to the Lord and thanking him for the freedoms that we have.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_04]: But also something that we will do is we'll take time to pray for the salvation of our leaders.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_04]: and that they would reign and rule justly through the Word of God, because they have been saved.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_04]: We want our leaders to come to know Jesus and to come to a knowledge of the gospel.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_04]: We want that.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_04]: We should have a desire for that.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_04]: We pray that for our country.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_04]: We pray that for our state.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_04]: We pray that for the city that we find ourselves in.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_04]: As we want our leaders to rule justly,
- 40:45[SPEAKER_04]: not with corruption.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_04]: And to be very clear, we in Washington know a good amount about leaders leading out of corruption.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_04]: And we pray for their salvation.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for that.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good thing to pray for.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for the lost.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for those in our city and in our country and in the world that need to hear the gospel.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_04]: We pray that the gospel would go out to people.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_04]: And we thank the Lord for the faithful men and women that have taken on that task of for claiming the truth of the gospel.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_04]: Those that are missionaries and other countries
- 41:23[SPEAKER_04]: The missionaries, we take special time to pray for the missionaries that we support as a church.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_04]: And thank the Lord for their courage and their strength and their resolve to follow the great commission to go out to the ends of the earth baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_04]: We take time to do that.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_04]: And we also thank the Lord for the other faithful churches that are in our area, those that we are in community with, those that are preaching a true gospel.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_04]: Love the lost, love their people.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for their elders.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for their decans.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for their members.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_04]: Some churches will take one church like one particular church every Sunday and pray for that particular church.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_04]: That's super cool.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_04]: I love that.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_04]: And you're actually praying for a specific local church.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_04]: That's a really cool practice.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_06]: We do that especially.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_06]: So we're at church.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_06]: That's in a church planning network.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_06]: So right now, like we have two churches that we've been praying for.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_06]: One of them is in Sheridan, Wyoming.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_06]: Cool.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_06]: There's a church plant out there that we pray for.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_06]: And then the other one is in like the heart of like Denver in and of itself.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_04]: It's a really encouraging email to get from churches, but when and the email will say something something of the like, hey, you guys are the church that we are praying for as a congregation this Sunday.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_04]: What are some ways that we can pray for you?
- 42:54[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's such an encouraging email.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_04]: And churches that take the time to do that specifically.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_04]: It's great.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_04]: It's great.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_04]: And the pastoral apprares of fantastic time to do that because you're training your congregation.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_04]: Again, let's not lose the the element of training how to pray here, teaching how to pray.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_04]: You're teaching your congregation, the importance of praying for others.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_04]: to not just let your prayers be inward, but your prayers be outward.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_04]: They have an upward focus, and they have an outward focus.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_04]: We're praying for other believers.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_04]: We're praying for other churches.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_04]: We're lifting them up to the throne of grace as well as God to bless them.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_04]: a good pastoral prayer models that and models how we should be praying as Christians.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_04]: Third and finally, so we pastoral prayer directs our focus upward, it directs our focus outward, and then it directs our focus inward, right?
- 43:50[SPEAKER_04]: What I mean by that is that what we do at Redeemer
- 43:54[SPEAKER_04]: is that, again, it's that kind of, it's that circle is that ever closing in circle, right?
- 43:59[SPEAKER_04]: So it starts very wide and then works its way in and then what we conclude on here at our local church is that we end our pastoral prayers.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_04]: praying for our specific church.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_04]: So it's prayers specifically for our congregation.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_04]: And this is really really beneficial because it's so important for your congregation to know that their pastors are praying for them.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_04]: That's really important and really special.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_04]: And the pastoral prayer is a great time to show that truth, to display that truth, to put and to showcase, if you will, that yeah, a large part of being a pastor means that I am praying for all of you.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_04]: And we model that in our pastoral prayer.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_04]: So we're praying for those that are in distress.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_04]: We're praying for those that need healing.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_04]: We're praying for those that are dealing with all types of ailments.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_04]: And we're praying that Christ, the great physician of both the body and the mind would be a comfort to them.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_04]: And he would show himself to them and they would receive peace that comes through the gospel.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_04]: We're praying for our own elders.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_04]: I pray for us elders every pastoral prayer that the Lord would remind us that we are under shepherds, that we would lead out of humility and not pride, that we would take our roles seriously, that he would keep us from corruption.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_04]: We pray for our deacons, we pray for our members.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_04]: That's really, really important to do.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_04]: It's really important for the congregation to see that.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_04]: And then finally, how we usually end our pastoral prayers as we pray for the morning itself, that whoever's preaching, the Lord would bless the Word being preached, that He would cause it to land on our hearts and our minds.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_04]: and that we would be blessed as a congregation as we hear from the Word of God.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_04]: And then our pastor prayer kind of leads right into the preaching of the Word.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_04]: So it directs our focus inward and that we are praying for our particular local church, our particular body, the needs that we have.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_04]: And again, it gives that understanding and gives that focus that
- 46:20[SPEAKER_04]: the congregation is prayed for, they're cared for by their pastors.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_04]: The pastoral prayers are great.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_04]: We are showing that.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_04]: Anything on that last one, Jack.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_06]: Any of the praying for congregation or the elders or the deacons?
- 46:35[SPEAKER_06]: I could say stuff, but I don't want to go on too long.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_06]: I'll save it for the p, I'll save it for the pod lux.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_04]: There we go.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_04]: There we go.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you can continue it over there.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah, a good pastoral prayer, directs our focus upward.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_04]: outward and inward.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_04]: And by and again, the flavors might be different.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_04]: The structure might be different.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_04]: That's what I have found.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_04]: That's what we've found good pastoral prayers are structured with and for.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_04]: So if you guys have before we get into kind of practical tips, if you guys have any listeners, anything to add or questions on that, please ask.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_04]: Again, there's no one way to do a pastoral prayer.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_04]: a resource that I have found again is, I think Jack mentioned Valley of Vision.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_04]: That's a really great one.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_04]: I enjoy that.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not a fan of just carbon copy prayers.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_04]: We'll get into that in the practical tips here in a minute.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_04]: But it can be a great great thing to to to to glean from as well as to utilize.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, there's a great book.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Jack, you're gonna have to help me with the author.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_04]: But uh, prank, prank through the Psalms.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_06]: Uh, is it uh, Donald Whitney?
- 47:54[SPEAKER_06]: That sounds really familiar.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_04]: That sounds really familiar.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_06]: I think it might be done Whitney.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_06]: Who is that Southern?
- 48:00[SPEAKER_06]: Southern Baptist.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_06]: The praying is it praying with the Psalms?
- 48:06[SPEAKER_04]: Either war.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_04]: No, that one's Eugene Petersen.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_04]: That one's Eugene Petersen.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_04]: No, I'm not recommending that.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's I think it's waiting.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_04]: I think you're right.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, what I have done sometimes as a pastoral prayers, I've taken a particular Psalm and I've split it up and utilized that as kind of the the outline and the substance of the pastoral prayer.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_04]: And that's been really cool.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_04]: That's been really effective, because not only are you, are you doing a pastoral prayer, which is very beneficial, but you're also praying scripture, right?
- 48:41[SPEAKER_04]: And you're showing the importance of utilizing scripture to inform our prayers and how important that is, right?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they just find it.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_06]: No, I didn't find it.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_06]: I just, I was looking through my library as well too, because I have two recommendations, people should.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_06]: Look at on prayer.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_06]: One of them is, so like we talked about, you know, when I talked about Tim Keller and prayer and stuff like that, sometimes what helps you pray is looking at other people's prayers.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_06]: And so the two books that I go to often and look at and just think about to help my prayer life is, both of the books are by a guy named Robert L. Moore, E. L. M. E. R. One of them is called Fount of Heaven.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_06]: which is prayers of the early church and the other one is called grace from heaven prayers of the Reformation.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_06]: So you got kind of the dual church fathers and the
- 49:42[SPEAKER_06]: both the church fathers of the early church and the Reformation.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_04]: So that's awesome.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_04]: And I just found the one I was thinking of.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_04]: It's praying the Bible by Donald Whitney.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_04]: And that one's only like seven bucks.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_04]: So praying the Bible by Donald Whitney.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_04]: Great book kind of shows shows like the extreme benefit of utilizing scripture again to to inform and structure your prayers.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_04]: It's really, really cool.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_04]: So, okay, some practical tips, right?
- 50:14[SPEAKER_04]: One of the practical tips that I would have wanting to focus, or structure a pastoral prayer, right?
- 50:22[SPEAKER_04]: Some people, they look at the concept of a pastoral prayer and it's kind of daunting because they're like, wow, well, it sounds like it's really important, it sounds like it should.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_04]: It should incorporate some different stuff.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know where to start.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_04]: And I don't want to pull a Mark Driscoll and just copy something off of the internet and say that it was mine, right?
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: Good.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_04]: You should do that.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_04]: One method that I have found, and again, it's not for everybody, but something, especially if your first kind of getting started, Jack, have you heard of the axe model of prey?
- 50:55[SPEAKER_04]: sort of that really beneficial.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_04]: I really like it, right?
- 50:58[SPEAKER_04]: So acts ACTS.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of the structure and the flow of the prayer starts with adoration, right?
- 51:05[SPEAKER_04]: That's that upward, right?
- 51:07[SPEAKER_04]: Um, praising the Lord for who he is and then see into confession, right?
- 51:12[SPEAKER_04]: Is confessing our sins?
- 51:15[SPEAKER_04]: as well as a confessing the truth of our need, right?
- 51:22[SPEAKER_04]: And then T, thanksgiving, thanking the Lord for who he is and what he's done through the gospel, and then supplication, asking the Lord for the for the things that we need to meet our needs, things like that.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_04]: So A, C, T, S, adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_04]: Great way to structure your pastoral prayer.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_04]: It really is.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to do the wide circle in or the small circle out.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_04]: If you utilize the ax model, it's a great way to do it because all your bases are pretty much going to be covered there.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_04]: That's one practical tip.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_04]: If you're looking for a place to start,
- 52:00[SPEAKER_04]: Use the axe model.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_04]: It's really awesome.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_04]: It's really practical and it works well.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_04]: Second, it's okay.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_04]: And this is something that is not popular.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_04]: But it needs to be said is it's okay if the pastoral prayer goes a little long.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want to say it's obviously like be be gracious about it.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_04]: I think it was who's prayer a Matthew Henry Matthew Henry put out and has out there kind of his structure for prayer like the things that he includes in prayer if you followed that it'd be like forty five minutes it'd be like forty four to five minutes in prayer which I do I mean
- 52:45[SPEAKER_04]: Again, I just got done saying we don't pray enough.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_04]: So go for it, but maybe for the Lord's Day service where we have other things that we are focusing on, maybe not for that, right?
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_04]: Most pastoral prayers that I have found go in between usually seven and twelve minutes right in there.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes they stretch to fifteen.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_04]: I know of my wife, Lizard, and she's going to be like, dude, you've never, you've never had a seven minute pastoral prayer.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_04]: I understand.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes so right around like ten minutes is I would say average for a pastoral prayer, but it's okay if it goes a little longer.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_04]: It's supposed to, right?
- 53:21[SPEAKER_04]: This isn't just a really quick flash in the pan part of the service.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of the elements of a liturgical service.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_04]: We take our time with it.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_04]: And in taking our time with it, we showcase its importance, right?
- 53:33[SPEAKER_04]: So that's okay.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_04]: Again, remember, you're teaching the congregation how to pray.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of the functions of the pastoral prayer.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_04]: So you want it to have breath, and you want it to have substance, right?
- 53:49[SPEAKER_04]: And that takes time.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_04]: That's okay.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_04]: Third and finally, nothing wrong at all with using resources.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_04]: Jack and I just listed a whole bunch of great resources.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of people that I know use things like the Valley of Vision to use their prayers.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_04]: What I would advise is to make sure that in the usage of resources, you are not losing the personal nature that the pastoral prayers are supposed to have.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_04]: Right, because at the end of the day, you got to remember, it's still a pastor praying for their people.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_04]: The value of vision is great.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_04]: I love it.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_04]: It's a great resource.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_04]: And there's nothing wrong with using it, copying, pasting it and using it for, you know, parts of your prayer and things like that.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_04]: But we have to remember that
- 54:42[SPEAKER_04]: we have a set people that have been placed in our care that have specific things they need prayed for.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_04]: Don't lose the personal nature that the pastoral prayer is supposed to have because you are, again, interseeding on behalf of your people to the Lord.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_04]: You're bringing your people their needs, their struggles,
- 55:08[SPEAKER_04]: The things that they are going through, you're bringing that to the Lord.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_04]: And as their pastor, you are lifting that up to the throne of grace, right?
- 55:16[SPEAKER_04]: So utilize the resources.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of really great resources out there, but just like Christ modeled in His High Priestly Prayer, it was very personal.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_04]: He prayed specifically for people, right?
- 55:27[SPEAKER_04]: So let's make sure not to, in our effort to try to find and utilize good resources, we don't lose the heart of what the pastoral prayer supposed to be, right?
- 55:40[SPEAKER_04]: That's about it.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_04]: We could talk more, but the pastoral prayer is super important.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_04]: Really great time within the Lord's Day service.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_04]: It directs our focus upward and inward and it's a great blessing to the congregation in seeing the care that their pastors have for them.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_04]: as well as a great time of training to show the congregation, hey, when we pray, it's not just a flash in the panic experience.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_04]: It has structure, and it has substance.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_04]: This is how we pray, and this is why it's important.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_04]: A good pastoral prayer, however, your church does it.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_04]: Whatever kind of flavor it's important, it should have substance to it.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_04]: So, Jack, anything to add before we get out here?
- 56:27[SPEAKER_06]: I can't think of anything.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_06]: Be quiet.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I'm monologue, most of that.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_04]: That was just kind of a briefing.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_04]: That was the, those were formatory, the briefing edition.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, well, that's fine.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_04]: It's all right.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_04]: Jack promises to talk more on the next year.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_04]: Bye.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_06]: Well.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_06]: Watch this out here.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
