- 0:25Speaker 1: The meaning of Cosmos in John three sixteen. It may
- 0:30Speaker 1: appear to some of our readers that the exposition we
- 0:33Speaker 1: have given of John three sixteen in the chapter on
- 0:37Speaker 1: Difficulties and Objections is a forced and unnatural one, inasmuch
- 0:43Speaker 1: as our definition of the term world seems to be
- 0:47Speaker 1: out of harmony with the meaning and scope of this
- 0:50Speaker 1: word in other passages, where to supply the world of
- 0:55Speaker 1: believers God's elect as a definition of world would make
- 1:00Speaker 1: no sense. Many have said to us, surely world means world,
- 1:07Speaker 1: that is you, me, and everybody. In reply, we would say,
- 1:13Speaker 1: we know from experience how difficult it is to set
- 1:17Speaker 1: aside the traditions of men and come to a passage
- 1:21Speaker 1: which we have heard explained in a certain way scores
- 1:24Speaker 1: of times, and study it carefully for ourselves without bias. Nevertheless,
- 1:32Speaker 1: this is essential if we would learn the mind of God.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Many people suppose they already know the simple meaning of
- 1:41Speaker 1: John three point sixteen, and therefore they conclude that no
- 1:46Speaker 1: diligent study is required of them to discover the precise
- 1:50Speaker 1: teaching of this verse. Needless to say, such an attitude
- 1:55Speaker 1: shuts out any further light which they otherwise might obtain
- 2:00Speaker 1: on the passage. Yet, if anyone will take a concordance
- 2:05Speaker 1: and read carefully the various passages in which the term
- 2:09Speaker 1: world as a translation of cosmos occurs, he will quickly
- 2:15Speaker 1: perceive that to ascertain the precise meaning of the word
- 2:20Speaker 1: world in any given passage is not merely so easy
- 2:25Speaker 1: as is popularly supposed. The word cosmos and its English
- 2:31Speaker 1: equivalent world is not used with a uniform significance in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the New Testament. Very far from it. It is used
- 2:42Speaker 1: in quite a number of different ways. Below, we will
- 2:47Speaker 1: refer to a few passages where this term occurs, suggesting
- 2:52Speaker 1: a tentative definition. In each case, cosmos is used of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the universe as a whole Acts seventeen twenty four God
- 3:04Speaker 1: that made the world and all things therein, seeing that
- 3:08Speaker 1: he is Lord of heaven and earth, Cosmos is used
- 3:13Speaker 1: of the earth John thirteen one Ephesians one four et cetera,
- 3:19Speaker 1: et cetera, when Jesus knew that his hour was come,
- 3:24Speaker 1: that he should depart out of this world unto the Father.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Having loved his own which were in the world, he
- 3:32Speaker 1: loved them unto the end. Depart out of this world
- 3:37Speaker 1: signifies leave this earth, according as he hath chosen us
- 3:42Speaker 1: in him before the foundation of the world. This expression
- 3:48Speaker 1: signifies before the earth was founded. Compare Job thirty eight
- 3:53Speaker 1: four et cetera. Cosmos is used of the world's system.
- 4:00Speaker 1: John twelve thirty one, et cetera. Now is the judgment
- 4:05Speaker 1: of this world. Now shall the prince of this world
- 4:09Speaker 1: be cast out? Compare Matthew four eight and first John
- 4:15Speaker 1: five nineteen. Cosmos is used of the whole human race
- 4:21Speaker 1: Romans three nineteen, et cetera. Now we know that what
- 4:26Speaker 1: things soever the law saith, it saith to them who
- 4:30Speaker 1: are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and all the world may become guilty before God. Cosmos
- 4:40Speaker 1: is used of humanity minus believers. John fifteen eighteen, Romans
- 4:47Speaker 1: three six. If the world hate you, ye know that
- 4:52Speaker 1: it hated me before it hated you. Believers do not
- 4:57Speaker 1: hate Christ. So that the wor The world here must
- 5:01Speaker 1: signify the world of unbelievers, in contrast from believers who
- 5:07Speaker 1: love Christ God forbid for then how shall God judge
- 5:12Speaker 1: the world. It is another passage where the world cannot
- 5:17Speaker 1: mean you, me, and everybody, for believers will not be
- 5:22Speaker 1: judged by God see John five twenty four. So that
- 5:28Speaker 1: here too it must be the world of unbelievers, which
- 5:32Speaker 1: is in view. Cosmos is used of gentiles in contrast
- 5:38Speaker 1: from Jews Romans eleven twelve, et cetera. Now, if the
- 5:43Speaker 1: fall of them Israel be the riches of the world,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and the diminishing of them Israel the riches of the gentiles,
- 5:54Speaker 1: how much more there Israel's fullness. Note how the first
- 6:00Speaker 1: clause in italics is defined by the latter clause placed
- 6:04Speaker 1: in italics. Here again, the world cannot signify all humanity,
- 6:11Speaker 1: for it excludes Israel. Cosmos is used of believers only.
- 6:18Speaker 1: John one, twenty nine, three sixteen, and seventeen, six thirty three,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and twelve forty seven. First Corinthians four nine, Second Corinthians
- 6:31Speaker 1: five nineteen. We leave our readers to turn to these passages,
- 6:37Speaker 1: asking them to note carefully exactly what is said and
- 6:41Speaker 1: predicted of the world in each place. Thus it will
- 6:47Speaker 1: be seen that cosmos has at least seven clearly defined
- 6:52Speaker 1: different meanings. In the New Testament. It may be asked,
- 6:56Speaker 1: has then God used a word thus to confuse and
- 6:59Speaker 1: confound those who read the scriptures? We answer no, Nor
- 7:05Speaker 1: has he written his word for lazy people who are
- 7:08Speaker 1: too dilatory, or too busy with the things of this world,
- 7:12Speaker 1: or like Martha, so much occupied with serving they have
- 7:18Speaker 1: no time and no heart to search and study Holy
- 7:22Speaker 1: writ Should it be asked further, but how is a
- 7:26Speaker 1: searcher of the scriptures to know which of the above
- 7:30Speaker 1: meanings the term world has in any given passage. The
- 7:35Speaker 1: answer is this may be ascertained by a careful study
- 7:39Speaker 1: of the context, by diligently noting what is predicated of
- 7:45Speaker 1: the world in each passage, and by prayerfully consulting other
- 7:50Speaker 1: parallel passages to the one being studied. The principal subject
- 7:56Speaker 1: of John three point sixteen is Christ as the gift
- 7:59Speaker 1: of God. The first clause tells us what moved God
- 8:04Speaker 1: to give his only begotten son, and that was his
- 8:08Speaker 1: great love. The second clause informs us for whom God
- 8:13Speaker 1: gave his son, and that is for whosoever or better
- 8:18Speaker 1: everyone believeth. While the last clause makes known why God
- 8:24Speaker 1: gave his son his purpose, and that is that every
- 8:29Speaker 1: one that believeth should not perish, but have everlasting life.
- 8:35Speaker 1: That the world in John three point sixteen refers to
- 8:38Speaker 1: the world of believers, God's elect in contradistinction from the
- 8:44Speaker 1: world of the ungodly tewod Peter two five is established
- 8:50Speaker 1: unequivocally established by a comparison of the other passages which
- 8:56Speaker 1: speak of God's love. God commandeth his life love toward
- 9:01Speaker 1: us the Saints Romans five eight. Whom the Lord loveth,
- 9:06Speaker 1: he chasteneth every son Hebrews twelve six. We love him
- 9:13Speaker 1: because He first loved us believers one John four nineteen.
- 9:20Speaker 1: The wicked God pities see Matthew eighteen thirty three. Unto
- 9:26Speaker 1: the unthankful and evil God is kind see Luke six
- 9:31Speaker 1: thirty five. The vessels of wrath. He endures with much
- 9:36Speaker 1: long suffering see Romans nine twenty two. But his own
- 9:43Speaker 1: God loves end of Appendix three.
