- 0:13Music. Welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner podcast, along with my partners, Brian Siegler,
- 0:51Jonathan Talley, our contributing writer Miranda
- 0:54Wilhelm, Ian Curtis Wilson. Jonathan Talley is unfortunately
- 0:58been ruled out for tonight. He's a little bit under the
- 1:01weather, so he will not be joining us.
- 1:03Tally, get better, man. You know, we miss you here, but
- 1:06as always, we are brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts down at
- 1:10the Counts Family Pharmacy. Your friendly neighborhood
- 1:13pharmacy set three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 1:17Drawing was delayed on the PS5. It should be taking play this
- 1:21week. Jeremy let me know.
- 1:23Just a ton of transfers and stuff happening probably with
- 1:26the stuff going on with the pharmacy with the name change.
- 1:28So if your student family member register for that, don't worry,
- 1:35it's coming. Again, let me know if y'all need
- 1:39to send it to Curtis. I've got his address, I can get
- 1:41you hooked up. He's good for it.
- 1:46I'm good for it. Yeah, I'm really good for it.
- 1:48Well, let's start here tonight. We have for the first time, join
- 1:52us and she will be joining us off and on through the season
- 1:55and in the offseason. Miranda, how are you tonight?
- 2:00I'm so good. Thanks for having me in general
- 2:04and tonight Crash in the boys party Crash.
- 2:08In the boys party, yes you are. Hey, we got to pump it up a
- 2:11little bit, right? Miranda, you're going to hang
- 2:13out with us while we do tell the truth Tuesday.
- 2:15You've obviously got to jump off and take care of some things
- 2:17after that, but let's get to know you a little bit.
- 2:20So first of all, you are Tech alum, correct?
- 2:25Yes. What year did you graduate?
- 2:272008. Oh wow, y'all remember those
- 2:30years? It was so, so many good years.
- 2:33I was there just. What?
- 2:35What? What years?
- 2:35Where are you? Living the dream there.
- 2:37O4 to O8. So like.
- 2:39First year the ACC Brian rant. I mean, it was a dream.
- 2:44Oh God O 4 Brian. That O four team gives me
- 2:49chills. Memories.
- 2:52Oh gosh. Yeah, oh man, I love that O Four
- 2:56team. Man, I love that O Four team so
- 2:57much so. OK, well, hold on.
- 3:00So we're going to get to know a few other things about you.
- 3:02So O4 to O8, who's your favorite hokey?
- 3:07Because that's a tough one. I mean there are some absolute
- 3:10studs during that period. Like football hokey in that time
- 3:17period in. That time period.
- 3:21I the only reason I'm going to say Ryan Randall is because in
- 3:24like, whatever, I forgot what year it was.
- 3:26I tweeted him because I saw him driving down in North Carolina
- 3:30and he like tweeted me back and I thought that was super like
- 3:33cool because I was like, he doesn't need to tweet some
- 3:35random chick. So, and he like ushered me into
- 3:40hokey football experiences. So he just kind of set the tone.
- 3:45He was such a class act and yeah.
- 3:49All right, Brian Rail, that makes sense here.
- 3:51Now go back in the memory bank. First of all, what was like
- 3:56what? What was your first game?
- 3:591st. Or pre student.
- 4:02First year or very first game at Lane was Western Michigan.
- 4:09We walloped them and I was like, man, I chose a good school like
- 4:13and I chose them for football. That I was oddly enough between
- 4:17JMU and Virginia Tech and I was like, I'm going with the
- 4:20football school. Little did I know like years
- 4:22down the road we lose to JMU, but whatever.
- 4:27I think we beat them by like 60 some points if I'm not mistaken.
- 4:30That game I. Feel like that was right because
- 4:33I think that was after the USC game.
- 4:35Yes. It was after the USC.
- 4:38Game. I moved into my dorm the day we
- 4:40played USC and watched that, yeah, we lost to them.
- 4:46And then we came out swinging at home against, you know.
- 4:51I I still the USC game that OPI that was not is still to this
- 4:57day. Oh, it's it's the what if OPI
- 5:00this day I was hammered in my apartment in Longwood.
- 5:03Yeah, throwing things when they call that penalty.
- 5:07Hey, while, while we're, while we're here, let's we're at a
- 5:09decent little pivot point here. Let's go ahead and shout out
- 5:12Ethan, Ethan, Ethan tweeted at us today.
- 5:15He said he was going to be here. He's here.
- 5:17Welcome aboard, also as always. Lavar love you Lavar.
- 5:24Who else is always in the house? We we can't forget Kevin drones.
- 5:28Can never get Kevin drones. Kevin Kevin.
- 5:32Oh man. And a lot of other good stuff
- 5:34going on here. We got Thomas in the house.
- 5:38Tib Tib and senior year was the O4 with #3 being alive and this
- 5:46is. So great.
- 5:48We were right in the midst of our college career at that
- 5:50point. So that was, that was a good
- 5:52year. But actually I, I'm, I'm sure
- 5:53I've told this story, I don't know if I've told this tomorrow,
- 5:55but Brian's brother Brandon was my RA at Hammond Sydney.
- 6:00So it was that was that was always a pretty fun interaction
- 6:03there anytime Brian would make the trip down to Hammond.
- 6:06Sydney, that's so cool. Wow.
- 6:10Very cool, very cool. Miranda, before we get into, you
- 6:14know, tell the truth Wednesday, you do some other ventures out
- 6:18there and I definitely won't. You've obviously got your
- 6:20Twitter handle up there, which all of you guys and girls who
- 6:24are out there tonight following and watching us follow her on
- 6:27Twitter. So she's we are we are pushing
- 6:32to try to get her into the press conferences.
- 6:34We've been working on that. Hopefully soon she'll be there,
- 6:38maybe asking some questions, but you do some other stuff
- 6:43obviously related to football. So go ahead, pump that out of
- 6:46what you do where they can find your writing when it comes to
- 6:49the NFL stuff. Yeah, so I've been contributing
- 6:53to a site called Draft Countdown for this is my third season,
- 6:59just a weekly content, sometimes a little bit more.
- 7:02The whole site is kind of centered around the draft, but
- 7:07they wanted somebody to, they wanted a psycho fanatic like me
- 7:12to come on board and kind of bridge the gap because all they
- 7:15centered everything on was like prospecting and all rookie
- 7:20stuff. And they were like, you know
- 7:21what, let's kind of bring it all together.
- 7:24And you know, even before I got into college and college
- 7:28football, like NF LS kind of been my bread and butter.
- 7:32So that's yeah, you can find my stuff at Draft Countdown every
- 7:37Sunday usually. And and then the draft.
- 7:41Draft season is pretty crazy. You got to you got to rip your
- 7:44team and let us know how your quarterback's doing.
- 7:46Oh yeah, what's? What's the issue on the?
- 7:50Yeah, he was not practicing today, which is not surprising,
- 7:54but the coach is doing the thing.
- 7:57Lafleur is like, you know, there's he's not, he's not ruled
- 8:01out for set for Sunday. And I'm like.
- 8:04Yes, he is. Like don't.
- 8:06Play him. On an injured MCL, that's.
- 8:09Yeah, they threw the doubtful label on him in the in the
- 8:12fantasy apps. I'm like, he's not fucking
- 8:14playing. Just go and put that he's.
- 8:15Going to play until October. Let's just put that that's.
- 8:18What I'm thinking, yeah, yeah, Week four against the Vikings,
- 8:22that sounds reasonable. So anyways, that was kind of a
- 8:25blow. Week 1, you know, looked forward
- 8:27to football for so many months, then I was like, well, could
- 8:31have been worse so. I I have him in both of my
- 8:36fantasy leagues and thankfully I've got a decent backup in both
- 8:40of us. I've got two in one league.
- 8:42And I've. Got Baker in another so if Baker
- 8:45keeps up his week 1 performance I think I'll be OK.
- 8:49Baker looked good, granted it was the commanders so I don't.
- 8:53Know it was. It was.
- 8:54It was the commanders. That is true all right, well,
- 8:58now let's get to it y'all, because we do have to tell the
- 9:00truth tonight about what happened in the Hokies.
- 9:04I mean let's just say it 3114. When is a winning week versus
- 9:11the Marshall thundering heard? So let's start with what went
- 9:15well, and I'm going to start this because a lot of people
- 9:18were hub dropping and pissed off.
- 9:20We will be almost 17 if y'all remember what happened last year
- 9:24when we played them. Everybody go back in your memory
- 9:26banks, go on the line and find we did not beat this team last
- 9:30year. We did not beat this team last
- 9:33year. So get your heads out of your
- 9:34asses about a 17 point win. We lost to this team last year
- 9:39and to get a three score win, was it the prettiest 3 score
- 9:41win? No, it was not.
- 9:43That's an improvement. If you lose to him last year and
- 9:45you beat him the next year, it's an improvement.
- 9:47I am very sorry. I'm a little bit.
- 9:49I, I see that buddy, you're fired up.
- 9:51And when we look at, when you look at the way the game went,
- 9:55it was kind of a mirror of last year's game where we came out
- 9:58firing. We were running the ball well to
- 10:00start the game and then went away from it and the offense
- 10:05fizzled. And then we never really got our
- 10:07footing back. And we kind of played a reverse
- 10:09of that, right? We kind of came out a little
- 10:11uneven, but I will say we didn't get a lot of points of it.
- 10:15But in the first half, the ball was moving.
- 10:19We just couldn't put drives together.
- 10:21It wasn't like Vanderbilt, where at Vanderbilt it felt like we
- 10:26never got anything going that entire first half.
- 10:28Offensively, the ball was moving.
- 10:30We just weren't able to put those drives together.
- 10:32We weren't able to put three successful plays together often
- 10:35enough in that first half to really put points on the board.
- 10:39And then things kind of flipped again like Curtis alluded to in
- 10:41the second-half. And you know, we're out there.
- 10:44You know, if if we play in the second-half, if we play every
- 10:48quarter like we play in the second-half, I think we'll we'll
- 10:50be a pretty damn good team. But we just haven't put four
- 10:53quarters together yet. Sean, what do you think about
- 10:55that man? I mean.
- 10:58Tell us your halves right? Like first half you look like,
- 11:01you know, you can't, you can't run the ball at all and you're
- 11:03in a dogfight with a team. You should be, you know, kind of
- 11:06running over. And then, you know, second-half
- 11:07they start, they start pounding the ball and kind of
- 11:11breakthrough there. So I'm kind of I'm kind of half
- 11:13and half with Curtis. Like, yes, I I think you should
- 11:15always, you know, a three score win.
- 11:17You should, you know, never take winning for granted.
- 11:19They got the job done. You know, they look mostly
- 11:22pretty competent, especially on defence.
- 11:24At the same time, there was, you know, there was room for
- 11:26improvement. Some things could have done
- 11:28better. You know, I think I think this
- 11:29upcoming week will be a pretty good, pretty good test to see
- 11:31how they can handle a, you know, opponent that they should they
- 11:34should take care of business of. But yeah, I mean, you know, you
- 11:37don't it's a 3 score win. So you don't want to be too mad,
- 11:38but at the same time, kind of, you know, focus on on things
- 11:41that can can go better. I'm sure we'll talk about that
- 11:43tonight. Absolutely, Miranda.
- 11:45Anything on just the win in general?
- 11:49Well, kind of like what Shelton just said.
- 11:51Like tale of two halves, obviously, yes, that's exactly
- 11:56how it went down. And I almost kind of attribute
- 12:00both to coaching to some degree. They came out sluggish to me.
- 12:05There's a little coaching in there.
- 12:07You're not setting your players up for success, you know, coming
- 12:10out the gates, but they're able to come out the half very
- 12:16adjusted and established the run and just look like a whole new
- 12:20team. So you got to give them credit
- 12:22there for do what they needed to do at the half.
- 12:26And so it's a little bit of a weird day, but like you said, a
- 12:31wins a win. When's a win?
- 12:33And you're right, it is a little bit on coaching of because now
- 12:36we're seeing this whole this whole we are a slow team out the
- 12:42gate. When this thing got rolling last
- 12:46year, with the exception of playing three of the best teams
- 12:48in league, the other games it was hot out of the gate, super
- 12:53hot out of the gate. And we only had really 4
- 12:56second-half possessions. We score on three of them.
- 12:58But to everybody, to your point, Miranda, they the adjustments in
- 13:03on halftime are working now. Shelton, Brian, I'll throw it to
- 13:06y'all. What are y'all or actually all
- 13:10three of y'all? What are we seeing?
- 13:11What? What is coming out of the half?
- 13:13Because it's clearly something. Is it just somebody hidden them,
- 13:20you know, over the shoulder with a whistle?
- 13:21Like get your head in gear, go play.
- 13:26I'm just not convinced that this staff is doing a great job of
- 13:29making adjustments on the fly. I think they need to see it,
- 13:34look at it, take some time to to calculate and then they come
- 13:38back out and they look different.
- 13:40So that's when you have games like like last year, I think
- 13:44with with ACC opponents, the things we saw with ACC
- 13:48opponents, especially common opponents that we play every
- 13:50year that we've got a decent amount of tape on.
- 13:52We looked very prepared to start the game.
- 13:55You you think Pitt, you think EBA, you think Wake, you think
- 14:01Boston BC. Yeah, so game, you know, we've
- 14:05got a lot of tape on those teams, even with some of the
- 14:07tweaks they have. We we kind of know what to
- 14:08expect there. I think, you know, we're
- 14:11probably a little lucky in that a lot of the opponents we're
- 14:15getting out of conference this year are common from last year.
- 14:20I mean, you, you get ODU, you, you know, you get, you get
- 14:25Marshall, you got Rutgers coming up.
- 14:28So Vanderbilt was really the only wild card there.
- 14:31So maybe that bodes well long term.
- 14:35And I think when we looked at Week 1, looking at the offense,
- 14:40we didn't throw the ball well. We came out throwing the ball
- 14:44out the gate, but what we didn't do a good job was protecting.
- 14:47I think they were playing a lot of for shell, playing a lot of
- 14:51zone making Kyron hit a lot of tight windows there.
- 14:55So, you know, I think they had a good game plan to kind of slow
- 14:59us down out the gate. And I think it until we got
- 15:02really leaning on that rushing attack, we weren't really able
- 15:05to get those sustained drives in the first half and that was a
- 15:07big factor. Yeah, I think, I think often
- 15:11times in in sports discussions, there's a tendency to conflate
- 15:15poor effort. I have no doubt in my mind that
- 15:19the guys in this team, you know, came out ready to play.
- 15:23They want to win, they want to execute.
- 15:24But sometimes you just don't. And it's it just boils down to
- 15:29lack of execution and and, you know, a delay in in the coaching
- 15:33adjustments necessary. I agree with Brian.
- 15:35I think for whatever reason, the staff seems a little bit slow to
- 15:38make those adjustments. I don't know why that is.
- 15:41But you look at the first half, you know, Marshall played a lot
- 15:44of cover three. They dropped guys in zone.
- 15:46They forced Tyron Jones to to read the field.
- 15:49You know, I thought sometimes it was a case of poor communication
- 15:53on the protections. Now maybe that's an issue with
- 15:55Braylon Moore in the offensive line being being kind of
- 15:57sometimes the guys weren't getting open and sometimes it's
- 15:59just a numbers game. Marshall's dropping too many
- 16:01guys that we didn't have anyone open, you know, in the 1st place
- 16:04and they, they couldn't get a really good push off the ball
- 16:06trying to run the ball. So it was a combination of
- 16:09factors. You know, I think, I think
- 16:11there's a lot of a lot of blame to go around, you know, and, and
- 16:13certainly drones has to, you know, keep keep progressing.
- 16:17But yeah, I just, it just seems like the, the staff, you know,
- 16:21really excels at halftime when they can look over the iPad and,
- 16:24you know, they got 10 minutes to go over all their notes and, and
- 16:28just, you know, talk about everything collectively.
- 16:30But for some reason, when, when it's kind of on the fly, when
- 16:32they're, you know, in the midst of the heat of battle, they,
- 16:35they, they just aren't seeing those those adjustments.
- 16:38So whatever those are, I mean, we'll see if they can if they
- 16:41can get better at that. But I think I don't think it's a
- 16:44question of the players wanting to come on me, you know, play
- 16:46hard. I know they want to play hard.
- 16:48It's just they're they're not set up in the right position and
- 16:51right away. And it's just taking time for
- 16:53the coaching staff to put them in those in those positions to
- 16:55be successful. You got anything on this,
- 16:59Miranda? No, I 100% agree and just goes
- 17:04back to like, I, I don't know if I said this here, I said it to
- 17:10Brian before the show, but like, you know, he mentioned, yes, we
- 17:14were, we were doing things with the ball in the first half,
- 17:16right. The blame goes around a little
- 17:19bit. You know, you come out a certain
- 17:21way, that's fine. Offensive line was a little
- 17:24shaky. We went one and nine on 3rd down
- 17:27in the first half. That's not good, but again,
- 17:31that's doesn't fall on one person, right?
- 17:34And we didn't make those adjustments that we needed to.
- 17:36So we didn't score a lot of points.
- 17:40Luckily, our special teams and defense was.
- 17:42Present. Absolutely.
- 17:45That was. Shout out to the defense and
- 17:48definitely shout out to the special teams with Jay Lane
- 17:51because even though I'm I've got that in another category for
- 17:54another reason in a little while, Jay Lane that that was an
- 17:58amazing run back there. Was, Oh yeah, doubt about.
- 18:01That it. It was, it was set up well, but
- 18:03that was just like an immense individual effort by him getting
- 18:08in the end zone there. So one of the better run backs
- 18:11that that I've seen on a punt. So, and, and really something
- 18:15that kind of got us out of our, you know, I, I think a lot of
- 18:18times there, there's some mental aspects there, right?
- 18:21Because you come out, you don't have a good first half against
- 18:25Vanderbilt, you come out, you're, you're, you're getting
- 18:28some yards, but you're not able to put drives together.
- 18:30You're not able to put points on the board.
- 18:32That starts to play with your mentals a little bit.
- 18:34So kind of getting that first half touchdown off your
- 18:38shoulders a little bit. That was so huge.
- 18:40I think for their, their confidence going into the rest
- 18:43of the game. And I think it really kind of
- 18:44showed you get that monkey off their back a little bit.
- 18:47Yeah. All right.
- 18:50Well, let's talk about these three guys next, because when
- 18:53the second-half happened, when we started running the ball, it
- 18:56became super effective regardless who was in the
- 18:59backfield between Tugboat Tooting.
- 19:02Yeah, I said tugboat. If y'all didn't see the chain,
- 19:05go check that out. That's all time chain, all time
- 19:08chain. And then Malachi Thomas with
- 19:12some good runs, PJ Prelude also with some good runs.
- 19:16All four guys average in their carries over 4 1/2.
- 19:18A carry with Bashel and Malachi over 5 1/2.
- 19:23So, Sheldon, what's the numbers on these guys?
- 19:26PFF grades for the game? Because clearly, you know those
- 19:31three guys. 193 combined rush yards.
- 19:36Yeah, well, Malachi Thomas only got 10 snaps, but he was really
- 19:39well graded, 77 per PFF. And then Tooten, you mentioned
- 19:43113 yards on 22 carries. He was around 65, which is kind
- 19:48of right, right around average, but you know, did well
- 19:50statistically. And what he did really well was
- 19:53was for seven missed tackles. So he's now up to 10 missed
- 19:57tackles for us on the season, which is top 25 in FBS, kind of
- 20:00similar short as last year. Just his ability to, you know,
- 20:02to to break away from. From defenders, you know, not I
- 20:06mean, if you if you leave the country in that stat, it's it's
- 20:08kind of like, you know, your your online should be doing a
- 20:10little bit better. But you know, we we kind of know
- 20:12that we know that we know that he's got that in him.
- 20:14So not going to knock knock him for that, but it's still still a
- 20:17pretty impressive accomplishment.
- 20:19So, and, and Curtis, we were talking about this earlier in
- 20:22the week, but looking at the team stats for Vt rushing wise,
- 20:2564% of the yards were after contact.
- 20:28And I mentioned that's that to you.
- 20:30Vt of the season ranks 99th in yards before contact per rush.
- 20:35So overall, they're not doing a great job of, you know, getting
- 20:40getting running back to that second level before they get
- 20:42touched. And so that's why we see tune
- 20:45having to keep, you know, breaking, having to keep, you
- 20:47know, getting getting missed tackles for us.
- 20:49So, yeah, I mean, I, I think you've got a, a situation where
- 20:53the O line is, you know, a little bit underperforming a
- 20:56little bit and you're kind of have to, you know, rely on the
- 20:58on the running backs to make plays happen.
- 21:00And they certainly did that on Saturday.
- 21:02Yeah, Miranda, let me get your take.
- 21:03Because when we come out half it's it's 10 seven.
- 21:05It's it's not the best feel in the world.
- 21:08It's like it's a 3 point game when you saw that opening drive,
- 21:12boom and then boom. And then what was your thoughts
- 21:17on that? Like sitting there, I'm sure you
- 21:19were drinking a cold one or a cocktail and you just saw this
- 21:23and it just we the ball just kept moving.
- 21:25Well, it's like what I know you especially preached.
- 21:29We did what we needed to do and we're like, hello, look, it's
- 21:35it's working more of that. And I don't care who gets the
- 21:39ball if we're confusing them that way, do that.
- 21:44I mean, obviously Basil is the guy, but everyone's been
- 21:49serviceable. So I love it.
- 21:54I'd love, I'd love to see more of it.
- 21:58Yeah, I think that's the big thing is that we we've, we've
- 22:01seen that the the running game can be consistent, right?
- 22:04And we saw some things, yeah, we started to see some bread and
- 22:09butter, a little bit of identity in the in the second-half there
- 22:12outside outside zone was looking pretty good, pretty consistent.
- 22:16A lot of split zone counter was hitting pretty well.
- 22:20So we were, we were kind of getting into those bread and
- 22:22butter plays. The only thing that we haven't
- 22:24got into, and I know Sheldon's talked about it as well as, you
- 22:28know, that toss we still haven't quite gotten.
- 22:30The. Seal on that.
- 22:31The, the seal is not there. And the couple times I mean,
- 22:36it's just our tight ends not getting out there to, to kind of
- 22:39wall that, that outside linebacker or that safety to,
- 22:44to, to open up that lane. But if if we get that working, I
- 22:49think we might be on to something.
- 22:50OK, they need to go watch. That gives us a little bit of
- 22:52variety with how we can attack in the in the rushing game.
- 22:55They need to go watch the 49ers and how we did that with Jordan
- 22:58Mason on Monday night on the short side of the field with
- 23:01those tosses. I mean it, yeah.
- 23:02Everyone can learn from. Shannon Perfect Lane I.
- 23:05Mean. Yeah, seriously.
- 23:06Like when you see that, though, because I think to Sheldon's
- 23:09point, we saw that last year, We saw that little pitch toss work
- 23:12last year to the outside. And again, what does that do?
- 23:17That puts linebackers on skates Because now if they see
- 23:20something like that, their first intuition is to take the outside
- 23:23step. And if you do that fake and then
- 23:26you go inside zone, it's like, well, they're dead.
- 23:29They're going to be on skates. You're going to be out of
- 23:30position. All right, couple more things.
- 23:33I want to go to defense because we we got we got to keep the
- 23:36best one for last. What a bounce back from
- 23:39Minnesota lane. I mean, he got torched by Vandy
- 23:45and this week Shelton. I didn't know, were you able to
- 23:47get the PFF stats on him? So I don't have the actual
- 23:51grade, but I can tell you his coverage when when targeted.
- 23:55So Marshall went after him eight times.
- 23:58They were one for 8 for 25 yards in interception and two pass
- 24:03pass breakups. So he was.
- 24:04And. The and the one catch was the
- 24:07Moss play that probably was a offensive pass.
- 24:11Pass. But still a hell of a catch.
- 24:15I know I saw. When I saw that, I I told my
- 24:18friends that was the greatest catch I've ever seen live, like
- 24:20ever. That's right, I don't know how.
- 24:22That yes, I was like, I was right.
- 24:25I was near the plate too. Like that.
- 24:26That was just insane. That's so cool.
- 24:30So, so like, like now we, we, we, we go to Week 1 and it's
- 24:35like we're specting the duo Dorian Balls.
- 24:39Mansour gets torched. I mean, Brian, did you get, I
- 24:43don't know if y'all got to watch the tape or anything like that.
- 24:45I mean, was it just, and don't get me wrong, Christian
- 24:48Fitzpatrick and their other guy, they're not small human beings.
- 24:52They're not. I think Fitzpatrick who mossed
- 24:54in his 64 like 220. He's a massive human being to be
- 24:59a wide out. But did it did like was it just
- 25:03technique? What did y'all see or read or
- 25:07whatever and say? How did he have such a good
- 25:10bounce back game? Comfort and confidence.
- 25:12I mean, he looked a lot more fluid and in his movements and
- 25:17he looked like he knew kind of where things were going.
- 25:20I don't know if the the preparation was different this
- 25:23week. I'm not sure what what exactly
- 25:25flip switch from a confidence standpoint, but completely
- 25:29different player this week and, and played with a lot of swagger
- 25:33that we're kind of accustomed to.
- 25:35So it was good to see him kind of get back into that, that vein
- 25:38and and play with that confidence because, you know,
- 25:41playing playing corner, you got to be confident.
- 25:43If you're not confident playing corner, you're a liability. 100%
- 25:50All right, one other defenses stat I want to go to real here
- 25:55and y'all may have looked it up. Do y'all know how many past
- 25:58deflections we had against Vanderbilt?
- 26:00It wasn't many. Less No 2, they counted yeah, 22
- 26:10pass deflections, 2 pass deflections.
- 26:13They went 600% better this week. We had 12 pass deflections, most
- 26:18Phillips, Kalai Lawson, Kalai Kalai Lawson led the way with
- 26:22three, most with two, Jalen Jones with two, Mansour with
- 26:26two, Dante Lovett with two, Caleb Spencer with two.
- 26:30So that makes me feel a lot better because it tells me we
- 26:35were in the right position so many more times this week.
- 26:39Obviously the the man sore in most the interception combo was
- 26:43perfect because they were exactly where they were supposed
- 26:46to be. They're exactly where they're
- 26:48supposed to be. Somebody said, well, man sore
- 26:49looked out of place. You look where most was.
- 26:51No, that was a zone concept. Clearly where they were because
- 26:55why is most going to be underneath?
- 26:56Why is he going to be coming over top?
- 26:58Probably a cover 2 concept of some type, but it was perfect.
- 27:01So going forward, do we hope to see this more or how can we see
- 27:08this? Why such a flip in y'all's
- 27:10opinions? I think that, you know, just
- 27:16looking at the way that that they were attacking us, I think
- 27:19we looked a lot more prepared on defense for the offense that
- 27:23came out and, and what we were expecting as far as how they
- 27:27were going to attack our defense.
- 27:29We we got kind of what we expected.
- 27:32I think for I'm not sure what was going on with the defense
- 27:35against Vanderbilt, whether it was, you know, rotations not
- 27:40being what they wanted to be, whether it was just not truly
- 27:44being prepared scheme wise to approach that shotgun triple
- 27:50option look. But we did not look like a
- 27:53prepared defense. We looked a lot more prepared
- 27:55this week. We we looked like we were, we
- 27:57knew what was coming at us and we knew how to adjust to that.
- 28:01So that's the big difference for me.
- 28:04And I think when you have that, when you have a offense that you
- 28:10can actually pin your ears back a little bit more and go after
- 28:14that lets you play more man, you can mix up your man a lot more.
- 28:19And, and I think that's where our bread and butter is, is when
- 28:21we can go after the pass or play a lot more man, We, we look a
- 28:25lot better as a defense. Yeah, I mean, they definitely,
- 28:29they definitely seem more confident and, you know,
- 28:31obviously Marshall runs the air raid.
- 28:33So, you know, expect him to throw a lot more.
- 28:35But I just thought they're more aggressive, more confident.
- 28:37And you know, with with Elaine, honestly, I was, I was never
- 28:40worried about Monsoor for a second.
- 28:42Like, you know, he he he had two years of a really good body of
- 28:45work, played one board game. You know, he's been a he's been
- 28:47a baller since day one. So you kind of figure out he's
- 28:50going to have a have a bounce back and credits to credits to
- 28:53PB on on Hokie Twitter for this stat.
- 28:55So the 9, the 9 PB us for the Hokies were the most since 2016.
- 29:03That was Fuente's first season against Miami, so pretty, pretty
- 29:07impressive. Pretty impressive streak there.
- 29:11All right, Miranda, you got anything on this, Anything on
- 29:14the past breaks UPS, anything you saw while watching the game
- 29:16Saturday? Say I'm just echo everything and
- 29:20to me it just you come out with swagger, you know, turn around
- 29:25game after. And like Brian said, maybe it's
- 29:29a matter of just true. You have the tape.
- 29:32You played this team last year, you were just more prepared to
- 29:36be in the right place at the right time and it wasn't.
- 29:39You didn't have to make those on the fly adjustments, but
- 29:44whatever it was, it worked. So more of that.
- 29:49All right, I'm going. I'm going to answer this
- 29:50question real quick here. They had 20 more passing
- 29:54attempts. Robbie been the only passing
- 29:57ball 16 times. Marshall went 436.
- 30:00So obviously more opportunities, but seriously 16 to 3036 is not
- 30:08a six 100% gain on that so. Don't fucking remind me.
- 30:11Yes, all. Right.
- 30:15Let me go real quick, last one, and we'll pitch it to Miranda.
- 30:21Give me your exact feelings on the Steven Gosnell catch.
- 30:26Oh my gosh, I I was drinking a lot of beers and I, I think I
- 30:36was sitting down and I like slammed my beard down and just
- 30:39went insane. And my parents, I think my dad
- 30:42was like outside grilling or something and he like runs his
- 30:45eyes like what happened? And I was like, we have to
- 30:48rewind this. And then of course that
- 30:51pictures. It should be in the Louvre.
- 30:54I mean, it's beautiful. It was insane.
- 30:57It was so freaking clutch. He, he had to work so hard for
- 31:03that. Like, that's not a given catch
- 31:05to anybody. It's, it was lovely.
- 31:09Dare I say, what a guy. Cole Esque.
- 31:12Danny. Cole Esque.
- 31:14Dare I say oh. Me Shelton, he's a dog man.
- 31:21Where where were you? Where were you in relation to
- 31:23where that was? Because the.
- 31:24So I actually, I actually, yes, I was on the closer to the, to
- 31:29the north side, closer to the student section, about 5 hours
- 31:32or so actually. I could not see Steven when he
- 31:35landed on the ground. So I was kind of waiting on the
- 31:36reaction from everyone else. I saw him, I saw him die for it,
- 31:40but didn't see him at the catch. But yeah, he's, I mean, we got,
- 31:43we got to find a way to get him get more targets, man.
- 31:46He's just, he's a, he's a dog. Yeah, we, we've got, we've got a
- 31:49very good problem right now, which is how to feed all of
- 31:52these dogs on our unit. Because we, we have a bunch of
- 31:56them and we got a a handful of them waiting in the wings too.
- 31:59So we got plenty of mouths to feed.
- 32:01So it's a very good problem to have.
- 32:03I'd like to see us do a little bit more of it, especially if we
- 32:05can get the running game going early to set them up for some
- 32:07big plays later in the game. So 100%, by the way, Steven
- 32:11Gosnell leading the team and receiving yards right now at
- 32:15126. Who had that on their bingo card
- 32:18after week two? I mean, I I love the guy with I
- 32:21don't think any of us had that on their on.
- 32:23Our bingo card. Nope, not at all.
- 32:25Maybe I would have had them on my bingo card for converting
- 32:27third downs because that's what he does all the time.
- 32:31All righty, let's go with it. We went well, some a lot of more
- 32:35good things this week, but let's go with what went bad.
- 32:39And I think we're all there and we, we kind of hit it a little
- 32:42bit already and it's just another slow start on offense.
- 32:46Not the first drive, the first drive we get into the territory
- 32:50we need to get into, get down to the 35 and everything stalls.
- 32:53But it was the subsequent after that.
- 32:56And again, Brian, you mentioned a few minutes ago, not until
- 32:58really the J Lane touchdown do we get sparked.
- 33:03So, you know, we're, we've talked about it a lot already.
- 33:08I mean, is this the week that everything changes?
- 33:13You, you hope it is right. You hope, you hope it is and you
- 33:17know, you hope that we can finally get past this, this
- 33:22confidence issue. And I feel like it it kind of
- 33:25it's snake bit US against Vanderbilt.
- 33:27We came out, we didn't, we had a couple drives that didn't go
- 33:29well. Then we have the turnover on the
- 33:32tipped screen pass and then it feels like, you know, we're kind
- 33:36of getting in our own way a little bit.
- 33:38And I, I think it's still a confidence issue.
- 33:41And I'm hoping that we've kind of gotten that past us a little
- 33:43bit because we've seen the ability of this team, even with
- 33:46the offensive line struggles we've had, we've seen that they
- 33:50have the ability to put up points and score the football.
- 33:53We just got to be consistent and we got to be able to do it
- 33:55coming out of the gate. Miranda, you follow NFL teams.
- 34:01What do you see and what do you read when there's there's a
- 34:04struggle out of the gate with NFL teams?
- 34:10Preparedness, I mean, going back to that and I really would I
- 34:16would look at coaching like why is your team also?
- 34:22Well, let me let me back up because the NFL because I
- 34:25followed the draft so closely and the team in the off, you see
- 34:30that the offensive line can shift a lot, right.
- 34:34But like you have a whole offseason and Pry said it before
- 34:38the game opener against Vandy. He said this is like we feel the
- 34:42best about this line. And he he had the confidence out
- 34:47loud. But it doesn't necessarily, you
- 34:51know, crystallize on the field like Brian said, like out the
- 34:54gates. And you just wonder.
- 34:57It's like, do we try something else?
- 35:00At at what point do we try something else?
- 35:03At what point is it because it is Cape?
- 35:05They are capable, but it's inconsistent and that can be
- 35:09frustrating to watch when you have all these weapons that are
- 35:13just waiting in the wings, you know?
- 35:18Yeah, it's very true. Sheldon, anything with you?
- 35:20Let's just kind of put the cap on the bat and to think about
- 35:24it. Yeah, I mean, you know, online
- 35:27wise, obviously struggled to run the ball in the first half.
- 35:31Ken Moore did not grid out particularly well at right guard
- 35:34and honestly, lathe Gannon really struggled left guard to
- 35:36being, you know, they had to so much so that they had to kind of
- 35:38take him out towards the end there.
- 35:39But he he graded out a 43 and really and and and run blocking.
- 35:44So, you know, they they made a change there.
- 35:47I also think, you know, like I said, they they struggled to
- 35:50identify some of those edge edge blitzes and blitzes.
- 35:52And I would assume that's probably a protection issue and
- 35:56drones was pressured on 50% of his drop backs.
- 35:59So that's not it's not a good number.
- 36:01It's got to get better. I think it just I just think
- 36:04it's, it starts with the protection.
- 36:06And again, part of that's Chiron, part of that's
- 36:08receivers, part of that's O line.
- 36:10Like there's, I mean, there's a lot of blame to go around, but I
- 36:11just think everything was out of sync in that that first half.
- 36:15Part, I just think part of that is establishing the run early
- 36:18and get your quarterback comfortable with those, you
- 36:20know, low hanging fruit, those easy completions, getting
- 36:22everyone comfortable. And I thought they did a pretty
- 36:25good job with that on the 1st drive and then it stalled.
- 36:29And then I feel like they went away from that.
- 36:30They, they didn't get him comfortable in the passing game
- 36:34at that point going forward throughout the rest of the first
- 36:37quarter and most of the second quarter.
- 36:39And I think that was probably where the, where the struggles
- 36:41were is that, you know, you lose a little bit of that confidence
- 36:44and then you're kind of back at square one.
- 36:45Because when your offensive line is inconsistent, it makes it, it
- 36:49makes it a lot harder to play quarterback just plain and
- 36:51simple. Because some, because if if
- 36:54you're getting sacked, you're getting chased around, sometimes
- 36:57you're seeing ghosts. There's a lot of things that
- 36:59happened there when when you have a offensive line that's
- 37:01very inconsistent. Let me ask you this, Brian, and
- 37:04this is this is almost an offseason topic.
- 37:06We always hear we're trying to mix and make guys learn
- 37:09positions. Is that something maybe what
- 37:12what we have we don't have the capability to do on the
- 37:14offensive line. If you're a right guard you
- 37:17that's where you're going to play.
- 37:18You're going to learn every step.
- 37:19You're going to learn every play from there versus, well, now
- 37:22you're going to try left and now we're going to put you out at
- 37:24right. Could that be an issue with the
- 37:27offensive line? It's the muscle memory in there
- 37:30with these guys and they just don't have the capability
- 37:33because we understand why you want to do it.
- 37:34You want to be prepared if somebody goes down, but it
- 37:38doesn't matter if you can't execute the play.
- 37:42Yeah. I mean, cross training is
- 37:43important and we've, we've talked about on here how
- 37:46important it is to, to cross train, especially the offensive
- 37:49line, having that position flexibility to be able to play
- 37:54guard and tackle. We got a bunch of guys that can
- 37:56play guard and tackle. We got a bunch of guys that can
- 37:58play, you know, right guard, left guard.
- 38:01We got a couple guys that are kind of moving from guard to
- 38:03center. We are really our, our two
- 38:05primary centers are guards that have been kind of moved into
- 38:09that spot, right. So that's part of the problem.
- 38:13I I think if it were me, I would have probably left Kaden at
- 38:18center and, you know, maybe maybe stood pat with that.
- 38:22I think what they were trying to do with that is they wanted to
- 38:25get that that Caden Parker tandem back that I think they
- 38:29thought that worked a little bit better.
- 38:32And then have Xavier, who is played admirably at that left
- 38:38tackle along with a younger guy on the left side there.
- 38:42I just think maybe it's still taking time to gel.
- 38:45Things don't always happen out the gate.
- 38:48It's a big difference when you start playing teams with
- 38:51different colored jerseys on. So it does take some time for
- 38:55that adjustment to take place. So I'm not saying that it's not
- 38:59time to look for answers, but I'm also saying let's let's be a
- 39:03little bit patient because as much as we want to win every
- 39:07game on our schedule, those ACC matchups are going to be a whole
- 39:10lot more important than a Vanderbilt or an ODU teams that
- 39:16we, you know, match up very well against from a talent
- 39:19standpoint. 100% all righty, just a couple more things on
- 39:25what went bad, y'all. I know we talked about the good
- 39:30special teams and I feel as far as the punt return goes, as far
- 39:35as the kickers go, they're excellent.
- 39:38But this is again the second straight week with a massive
- 39:41gaff and it really gave Marshall life.
- 39:46When we have a block kick and I got a little Miranda, you listen
- 39:51to the presser, I was there not far behind you.
- 39:55Were you a little bit perturbed when Brent Price said or they
- 39:58brought a guy off the edge and we didn't know what to do?
- 40:00He said he said the quiet part out loud.
- 40:02He did. I know.
- 40:05But were you perturbed by that? Because I'm sure in your head,
- 40:08while you're listening, it's like, well, coach, wouldn't you
- 40:10just we haven't seen this. We have 3.
- 40:14Let's readjust, right? Yeah.
- 40:19I I, I think that's a trend we're seeing is that sometimes I
- 40:23think Brent is a little slow to take a time out just because
- 40:28there's a problem. I think he sees things a little
- 40:30bit quicker on on defense and I think he's a little more attuned
- 40:34on offense. I think we're seeing that maybe
- 40:37there's a little bit of delay with that decision making when
- 40:40it comes to special teams just because there are different
- 40:44moving parts that he's not as familiar with with that unit.
- 40:48So yeah, that may just be a gap that he's still adjusting to at
- 40:52this point as far as how to make those decisions in game.
- 40:57Showing anything you were there live and actually that happened
- 41:01towards the North End, right? Oh, wow, yeah, yeah, I did.
- 41:06I mean, I thought I thought Peter was a little bit slow to.
- 41:10I could I could see it coming from, I don't know, like when
- 41:12they got their rush off, I was like, this does not look good.
- 41:16I thought, I thought Peter was a little bit slow getting the pun
- 41:19off. But, you know, Coach Price said
- 41:23that, you know, they hadn't seen that look before where basically
- 41:25the the guy guarding the receiver bails.
- 41:28And it was it was a great play called by by Marshall.
- 41:31You bail right before laterally and then the second ball
- 41:35snapped. You, you know, go for the
- 41:36punter. I don't know if maybe Marshall
- 41:39saw something on the film that, you know, they felt like they
- 41:42they could get away with that. Certainly possible.
- 41:45But I, I think you should give it a little bit of credit just
- 41:48because from what probably was saying like that's not a, that's
- 41:51not a play call you see very often.
- 41:53And they, they talked with some NFL teams like about, about
- 41:56that, that play. And I guess, you know, it
- 41:58happens once every so often. But yeah, I don't know.
- 42:01I mean, I guess you should be prepared for everything.
- 42:03But it seems like they they just don't really see a lot.
- 42:06All righty. Well, let's go to the things we
- 42:09were not prepared for. Miranda, your shot, anything in
- 42:12the game you were not prepared for statistically in game,
- 42:16etcetera. I think and Shelton, you can
- 42:22correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I had read that we had
- 42:26an we gave up another 4 sacks this week for a second week in a
- 42:30row. Is that right?
- 42:32I can Fact Check once. And it's so again, you know, and
- 42:36I hate to like shit on the online consistently, but I you
- 42:43just can't do that. Like, you know, because I say
- 42:46all these other things like, oh, we couldn't get third down
- 42:48going. We couldn't do this.
- 42:49Well, yeah, you can't when you're when your guy is getting,
- 42:53you know, and I know 4 isn't like outrageous, but that's two
- 42:58weeks in a row, 4 sacks. It's just I thought we would
- 43:03come out a little bit, a little bit more prepared than that all.
- 43:09Right, and it was 4. All right, OK.
- 43:11It was 4 sacks. It was 4 sacks.
- 43:13So yeah, Sheldon, you were there.
- 43:16You obviously probably watch some of the tape.
- 43:18We know you do you read up some of the stats.
- 43:20What about you? Anything you want to say?
- 43:24Yeah, not prefer I I would say, you know, I I wouldn't call it
- 43:28lackluster, but I've a little bit disappointed by the passing
- 43:32game. Just seems like it hasn't been,
- 43:34you know, quite clicking and, you know, I'd love to get
- 43:36Brian's thoughts on this, but it seems to me like I Vt is it's
- 43:40been after run ball well to to move the ball.
- 43:43I think drones is not a prototypical drop back passer.
- 43:46I think he's best when he's doing RP OS bootlegs, you know,
- 43:50get it out in space, get away from the online, you know, throw
- 43:53down field. It just seems like other teams
- 43:56are forcing him to, you know, kind of sit back in the pocket
- 43:58and dissect zone defenses, you know, cover 3, cover 4, and I
- 44:02think he's kind of struggled with that.
- 44:03So, you know, that's been something that I was certainly
- 44:08hoping for a little bit more there, you know, just because
- 44:10of, you know, what we expected with his development in passing
- 44:12game. It just hasn't quite been there.
- 44:14I think right now it seems kind of off.
- 44:16You look at the targets, you know, some guys aren't getting a
- 44:18ton of catches that you you would normally expect.
- 44:21So I, I certainly think the passing game leaves a little bit
- 44:23to be desired. And I was a little bit
- 44:25underwhelmed by, you know, kind of what we've seen through
- 44:28through two games and certainly on Saturday.
- 44:31Yeah. And Sean kind of hit it on the
- 44:32head there. I, I, I think Kyron does a lot
- 44:35better when with the RP OS, when you can move the pocket, get
- 44:40those half field, you know, 1-2 like a high, low read and things
- 44:44like that. I think he does a lot better
- 44:45with those things and, and it's a lot to process if you're, if
- 44:50you've got a full field, you know, 3 or 4 progression read
- 44:57and you know, defenses are in your lap a little bit because
- 45:02offensive line's a little inconsistent.
- 45:03So I think it's the combination of those things where we're
- 45:07we're dropping straight back in those in those, you know, three
- 45:11and five step drops a little bit more than we did last year where
- 45:14it was more RP OS move in the pocket, letting Kyron do what he
- 45:18does best, which is deliver a ball kind of off platform on the
- 45:23run. He is very accurate and and very
- 45:26good at doing those things. I just think we haven't seen a
- 45:29lot of those, but I feel like we get better when we when we start
- 45:32throwing some of those elements in there.
- 45:33I think some of those big plays that we saw against Vanderbilt
- 45:36were off of that type of action to to get Ollie Jennings open
- 45:41one time, to get Jay Lane open one time.
- 45:43There's there's a couple of big plays we saw against Vanderbilt.
- 45:46We're off of that. I think we need to kind of maybe
- 45:50get back to our identity and understand that maybe
- 45:53simplifying things a little bit is the way to go because we hope
- 45:56we saw success with that. And I think the other thing with
- 46:00the passing game is that, you know, I don't think we can go
- 46:02another game with with Ollie Jennings registering AA0.
- 46:08You got you got to get him the ball.
- 46:10He is too talented not to be able to get behind the defense.
- 46:16And I, and I think they were doing a good job of like not
- 46:18letting us take the top off the the defense.
- 46:21They they definitely were saying if you want to matriculate the
- 46:24ball down the field in the passing game, by all means,
- 46:27we're not going to play a lot of man.
- 46:29We're going to play zone. We're going to make you throw
- 46:32into tight windows. These are not things that I
- 46:35think are our strengths. I think I think we can do them,
- 46:38but they're definitely not our strengths.
- 46:40I think we need to again, lean on the running game.
- 46:42So they have to get out of that look where they can't just sit
- 46:46back and wait on us to do something underneath.
- 46:49So that, that that's my take there.
- 46:51And I think if we do that, we'll be OK.
- 46:54Understood, Understood. I mine was what turn around for
- 46:58the linebackers. That room was we, we in here,
- 47:01we, we, we game a little bit of a shellacking last week, all
- 47:06intentions purposes for good, but they played so significantly
- 47:09better. They were in the right spots
- 47:10with the exception of the one big play, the 69 yard run to AJ
- 47:14Turner. You take away that big run, it
- 47:18was 25 for 70 per run. That's well under that's
- 47:25borderline like like 2.3, which is nothing.
- 47:29So just but it's good to see it. That's the confidence growing
- 47:32and that's what I like to see. Brian, we're going to we're
- 47:35going to wrap this up real quick because it is getting late.
- 47:37We don't want Miranda to miss her bedtime.
- 47:40Can't mess with. Them.
- 47:43Ain't the only one, but Brian, one thing you feel we've got to
- 47:46do this better moving forward against ODUN the rest of the
- 47:52season. I mean it's low hanging free,
- 47:54right with pass protection. If, if we can give our
- 47:57quarterback a little bit more time, if we can do those little
- 48:01things better in the passing game with communication of blitz
- 48:05pick up, I think we're going to be in a good position going
- 48:08forward because we know the talent at the skill positions
- 48:11are there. So take take care of your
- 48:14quarterback block for your running back.
- 48:17Good things are going to happen. Sean, what about you?
- 48:21Yeah. Well, to to hammer home your
- 48:23point about the rush defense, that 69 yarder was really the
- 48:27one they play that Marshall had. And it goes to show how averages
- 48:30can be misleading because I think, I think Marshall's
- 48:33average yards per carry. 5.7 Right 5.7.
- 48:40Right. But you take that, you take that
- 48:4269 yarder out and look at it, I think it was, I think it was
- 48:44under 3. So that's why we have stats like
- 48:47success rate, which look at, you know, if you were successful on
- 48:50each play. And I don't think I wasn't quite
- 48:54able to get rushing success rate from that game in particular.
- 48:57But you look at run stuff rate, Stuff rate is the percentage of
- 49:01runs that are stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage.
- 49:04So Tech had a 15% run stuff rate against Marshall on defense.
- 49:08That's really good. That was the bottom, bottom
- 49:10first percentile for all FBS games this year.
- 49:13So they were, they were really good.
- 49:15Just, you know, forcing, forcing 0 or negative yardage plays was
- 49:18really helpful. So again, yards per carry
- 49:21averages can be misleading. Sometimes you take out the big
- 49:23gainers, look at just, you know, success rate on a, you know,
- 49:26down by down basis. Tech did a really good job
- 49:27defensively. Miranda, one thing you've got to
- 49:31you feel we have to do better moving forward.
- 49:35Bryant said the word earlier and I'm just going to steal it, but
- 49:39bring the damn swagger. Like not an not an official game
- 49:45note, but like come out. I don't even care.
- 49:48Come out cocky. It might bite us in the ass, but
- 49:51get out there like you. We do have the playmakers to be
- 49:55cocky about. Do what we do best.
- 49:58Let's see what happens. We've played this team.
- 50:02This isn't a new team. Like we don't have that excuse.
- 50:05So we believe we're prepared, right?
- 50:09Run the ball. That's right, run the ball.
- 50:12That's our buddy coach Robbie Compton, who's going to be in
- 50:14the head coaching chair as his head coach is going to be out
- 50:18for six weeks with a foot surgery.
- 50:20So Robbie's going to be running defense and running head coach
- 50:23down in North Carolina high school ball.
- 50:26Robbie, godspeed. I'm going to close this out real
- 50:29quick and I'm going to steal this Andy Bitter shout out.
- 50:31I listened to Tech sideline the other day.
- 50:33Love those guys over there. And he said it.
- 50:37He's like we've got to establish the identity.
- 50:40And I mentioned to y'all in here a little while ago and to a
- 50:44couple other people. When we established our identity
- 50:47last year, Ali wasn't here, Gosnell wasn't quite there yet.
- 50:51Developmentally, we really didn't have a tight end threat.
- 50:55It was Kwan and it was Jay Lane along with Tutor and drones.
- 51:01RP OS. We ran the ball, read options,
- 51:04we ran, we got them set up. We took shots, we found RP OS,
- 51:07little post, little slants. We've got to establish the
- 51:10identity and this is the week it's got to start.
- 51:13Last year took the week five, this year it's got to be at week
- 51:173 and I think that is going to be what we said.
- 51:20Put it back up there. What Robbie said just a second
- 51:22ago. It starts with running the ball.
- 51:26Run the ball. Everything else will flow
- 51:28downhill naturally. Miranda, we appreciate you
- 51:32coming on with us tonight. Thanks for having me, that was
- 51:36fun. And we we thank you for joining
- 51:38us because the honest truth, it's awesome.
- 51:40I I read the articles. You were doing a fantastic job.
- 51:44If y'all have not go to boundarycornerbt.com.
- 51:48Check out both of Miranda's articles and little game recaps
- 51:51with some little news notes, her takes.
- 51:55It's entertaining. I'm going to say that it it
- 51:56will. Definitely keep.
- 51:57I've got a style. You definitely do.
- 52:00But listen, you take care. We will definitely have you back
- 52:03on very shortly and appreciate it.
- 52:06Take care. All your time with Gary.
- 52:08Bye. All righty.
- 52:11So as you all know, we are brought to you by counts Family
- 52:16Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy, three O 1
- 52:20S Main St. in Blacksburg. And now we flip over to know the
- 52:24enemy. And tonight we actually have a
- 52:27special guest, one of the first time we've ever done this.
- 52:31So Brian, you've been talking with our our guest tonight, so
- 52:36I'll let you do the introduction.
- 52:38No problem, no problem. So as you guys know, we are a
- 52:41college huddle podcast here. And one of the big benefits of
- 52:45being a part of something like that is that you get to
- 52:47communicate with these other podcasts throughout the country,
- 52:50especially when you got common opponents and things like that.
- 52:53It's going to be a big boost for us.
- 52:54And one of the things we can do is get a guy in here to talk
- 52:57about a team like ODU that knows them like the back of his hand,
- 53:02just like we do Virginia Tech. So we're going to welcome Gary
- 53:04Williams on with the ODU Monarchist.
- 53:08Gary, how you doing tonight? I'm doing great, thank you all
- 53:11for having me on. Appreciate you joining us
- 53:14tonight, Gary, and taking a little bit out of time.
- 53:16Gary. Also, we saw you are here in the
- 53:19RVA with us. So that's great to hear.
- 53:21We got a lot of RVA podcasts going on.
- 53:25Just give us a little bit of insight yourself how this
- 53:28started with your your podcast and what you do for fun.
- 53:34Yeah, well, I graduated from ODU in the spring of 2009, so I was
- 53:38like just a couple months away from football, restarting there
- 53:41in the fall. You know, I've been fully
- 53:43involved with the team in some capacity since then as a fan,
- 53:47alumni, donor, all that good stuff.
- 53:49But there are our group ODU Monarch is we started as a like
- 53:52a Twitter DM group chat back in 2019.
- 53:56And you know, 2019 for us, that was the one in 11 season.
- 53:59It was not a whole lot of fun. So we're kind of looking for
- 54:01people that were like, all right, we know we're awful this
- 54:04year. We've got stuff to look forward
- 54:05to, kind of like minded people that trying to be a little more
- 54:07positive about ODU football. So it evolved from that to a
- 54:13tailgate group. And then in 2022 we launched a
- 54:16podcast mainly just covering football and men's basketball, a
- 54:19couple of other things. Now we are we have our website
- 54:22as well, ODU monarchist.com. So we pretty much cover every
- 54:25sport at ODUA. Couple different podcasts now,
- 54:28including the official men's basketball show for ODU.
- 54:32We are big partners with the Pride of ODUNIL Collective when
- 54:36that came online. So we do a lot of in person
- 54:39events with them, podcast, different things like that, just
- 54:43doing everything we can to promote ODU athletics, our our
- 54:46student athletes. Then the other wing of what we
- 54:49do is is really focused on charities in the 757 every year,
- 54:53usually our last foot home football game, we partner with
- 54:55the Marine Corps to do a Toys for Tots drive.
- 54:58So each year we've exceeded our goals there.
- 55:01The Marines bring out some like armored personnel carriers that
- 55:05kids can play in and we fill it up with toys.
- 55:07We get the F18 flyovers, all that fun stuff.
- 55:10So just kind of looking to serve the community and also, you
- 55:13know, taking care of what we love, and that's Old Dominion
- 55:15athletics. That's awesome, man.
- 55:17I'd love to hear that. I'd love to hear how you're
- 55:19involved in the community, how you kind of got a great
- 55:22relationship with the school there.
- 55:23So it, you know, looks like you guys are hitting it on all
- 55:26fronts. So that congratulations on that
- 55:28and well done. Yeah, Thank you.
- 55:30We're still trying to just grow this thing as big as possible
- 55:32right now. Send or reach a bit.
- 55:35Very nice year. Good luck to y'all on that man.
- 55:38Obviously, both of us being a part of the College Huddle
- 55:41Network, we wish y'all nothing but the best.
- 55:44And obviously it's great to have that chance to create these
- 55:47relationships where when our teams play each other, we can
- 55:50get a little insight for the other team.
- 55:52And let's start with that tonight because I want to start
- 55:54with the ODU defense because right now I got a feeling you're
- 55:59going to tell me things aren't going great because from the
- 56:01look of it, you guys are one O 8 in rush defense.
- 56:06So give me a little background and what we should expect from
- 56:10defensive coordinator brakes liars 335 defense.
- 56:14And you know, what sort of identity is he trying to
- 56:17establish with that look? Yeah, well, defense is actually
- 56:20the stronger side of the ball right now.
- 56:23I know they're they're lower in those rankings.
- 56:26We played at South Carolina, played against East Carolina and
- 56:29a lot of the points that the defense has given up is because
- 56:31they're on the field so much. Last weekend against East
- 56:34Carolina was really like our almost almost most even time of
- 56:37possession game. But you go look at South
- 56:39Carolina, some of the games last year, our defense is on the
- 56:42field for 3839 minutes a game. So fourth quarter, getting
- 56:45gassed a little bit, but you're going to see some 335, you're
- 56:49going to see some 326, You're going to see some funky looking
- 56:52nickel coverages, 3 safety packages.
- 56:56You're going to see a lot out of the defense.
- 56:58You probably won't see the same look twice either up front or
- 57:00back in the secondary. When Blake Tyler originally came
- 57:04to ODU, we actually ran a 425. We're actually in pretty good
- 57:07shape with that. We kind of have adjusted based
- 57:10on personnel, but you're going to see a lot of blitzes from a
- 57:15lot of different places. We blitz a lot, whether it's
- 57:18from one of the linebackers, safeties, corners.
- 57:21We try to vary it up quite a bit now.
- 57:24South Carolina ran the ball pretty well against us.
- 57:26If you look at the total yards, they're still around like 3.1
- 57:29yards per carry. We did probably our best job
- 57:32defensively stopping their kind of power run, power option
- 57:36looks. I think they went into that game
- 57:38saying we're in the SEC, we're bigger than you in the trenches
- 57:41and we're just going to run all over you.
- 57:43They were doing OK with that, but we were able to kind of get
- 57:45a lot of stops on on 3rd down South.
- 57:48You know, both of the touchdowns South Carolina scored were off
- 57:51of fumbles and they started inside our 10 yard line.
- 57:54So we're we're kind of going into Saturday thinking we
- 57:57probably should be two and O, we just shot ourselves in the foot
- 58:00way too much. All right.
- 58:03So that that's that's a good amount of confidence and I can
- 58:07appreciate that. And and, you know, as a team
- 58:09that's coming off playing a Marshall team that was really
- 58:11good up front, even if they were a little weaker on the back end.
- 58:17Yeah, telling us that that you were going to have some blitzes
- 58:20and struggling with some blitz pick up.
- 58:21That's definitely something we got to keep our eye on because
- 58:24we've struggled with that so far.
- 58:26So we're we're we're talking about, you know, what you do.
- 58:29Let's talk about who does it. What are some of the playmakers
- 58:31on this defense? Yeah, there's a there's quite a
- 58:34few that have stood out early in the season for us.
- 58:37Cohen, no Itala, he is filled in at linebacker a lot for Jason
- 58:41Henderson, who's not fully back yet.
- 58:43I think he had 18 tackles on Saturday against East Carolina.
- 58:47You won't you won't be able to miss him if he's on the field.
- 58:49He has a nice Troy Palomalu flow coming out the back of that
- 58:53thing. But he's usually a weak side
- 58:55linebacker in the 335 or the 326.
- 58:59He's he's on that side. Jeron Manning, JUCO transfer
- 59:03that came in this year. He's back at safety.
- 59:05He's usually one of the three safeties that's back there.
- 59:08He is probably our our best guy in the secondary.
- 59:12He can do it all. He's a bigger safety so he can
- 59:14come up and run support, grading coverage.
- 59:16Had two interceptions against East Carolina on Saturday.
- 59:20He's a ball hawk. He he runs fast and he hits
- 59:22very, very hard. So those are two guys to look
- 59:25at. I know everyone probably wants
- 59:27to hear about Jason Henderson. He tore his ACL with about three
- 59:32games left to go in the season. Tried to make a go of it in the
- 59:35South Carolina game, but you could clearly see he was he was
- 59:38dragging that leg. I mean, he's not a super tall
- 59:40guy, but he's really well built and you can actually like see
- 59:42the size difference in his legs from where he's been recovering.
- 59:46So he did not play against East Carolina.
- 59:48Don't know if he's going to play on Saturday.
- 59:50I would be surprised. I think with us having a bye
- 59:53week and then going to Bowling Green, we're probably trying to
- 59:56take care of him the best we can because he's likely to get
- 59:58drafted. But also like we're our, our
- 1:00:00focus is really going to be on winning Sunbelt games and try to
- 1:00:03get in the Sunbelt championship game at this point.
- 1:00:05So you know, he's not likely to see him, but I'm sure you
- 1:00:09remember from a couple years ago when he was a little bit younger
- 1:00:12out there at linebacker and he's just, he's a high motor guy.
- 1:00:15He's the heart and soul of the defense.
- 1:00:17But they've done a really good job in his absence.
- 1:00:19Yeah, obviously our, our, this is our, this is our other Co
- 1:00:22host Jonathan Talley, who's a little under the weather
- 1:00:24tonight. He is right.
- 1:00:26Henderson is a stud and from our vantage point, we're the
- 1:00:30opposite of you. We hope we don't see him
- 1:00:32Saturday at all. Let me throw one other guy out
- 1:00:35there that kind of caught our eye.
- 1:00:37Give us a little insight on Mario Thompson.
- 1:00:41Mario Thompson, obviously, you know, he's a local kid to us
- 1:00:44here in Richmond, Went out, played Trinity, you know, Three
- 1:00:47Star when he came out a couple years ago.
- 1:00:50Where do we see him on the defense?
- 1:00:52Because I know he's considered a linebacker, but where's he
- 1:00:55playing exactly? Yeah, you'll, you'll see him at
- 1:00:58linebacker when we have 3 linebacker sets out there.
- 1:01:01A lot of times if we're running kind of that 326, he is the
- 1:01:04third safety that is on the field, like technically at
- 1:01:06safety. So you'll see him line up all
- 1:01:08over. I mean, he got a lot of playing
- 1:01:10time against East Carolina with Jason Henderson out and he he
- 1:01:14played really, really well. I think he was second on the
- 1:01:16team in tackles. I saw him line up with a hand in
- 1:01:19the dirt outside of the defensive end.
- 1:01:21I saw him middle linebacker and I saw him basically at the
- 1:01:25sticks 12 yards down the field on 1/3 and long.
- 1:01:28So he's going to be everywhere. I think his speed and
- 1:01:31athleticism and being a little bit leaner than maybe your
- 1:01:34prototypical linebacker, he's paid some dividends for him.
- 1:01:37He had some great stops in the game against South Carolina.
- 1:01:40I don't think their quarterback wants to see Old Dominion again
- 1:01:43because Mario Thompson was in his face on a lot of those kind
- 1:01:45of boundary type runs and quick pops and things like that.
- 1:01:49But yeah, he's, I mean, he's young, he's still developing.
- 1:01:52He hasn't had a ton of playing time yet.
- 1:01:53But our line backing position group is without a doubt the
- 1:01:57strength of our team. I mean, we were missing Jason
- 1:01:59Henderson. He was kind of on one leg for
- 1:02:01the first game and they were still our strongest unit.
- 1:02:03So lot to like about him. KOA EJ Green, who's in the
- 1:02:08second year with us after transferring him from Duke.
- 1:02:10We we have some dudes at linebacker and rotate them very,
- 1:02:14very often. All right.
- 1:02:17So you talked about that strength.
- 1:02:20Were you going to say Curtis? I will say I was on AC Bates
- 1:02:23here, Shelton, you didn't have anything data was that was.
- 1:02:26That you wanted to No, I got I got a couple in the offense, but
- 1:02:29you can. Got it, he says.
- 1:02:30He's got his offense and. Stuff together since we're
- 1:02:34keeping it moving. You know, you talked about the
- 1:02:36strength of that defense. Where are some of the areas of
- 1:02:38weakness on the defense? And like So what?
- 1:02:40Which which area has you most concerned heading into this game
- 1:02:43on Saturday? Well, I think the three man
- 1:02:45front is kind of the weakness for us when they don't have
- 1:02:49someone blitzing in running blaze and things like that.
- 1:02:53They do fine. But we saw it in South Carolina,
- 1:02:56saw it a lot against East Carolina.
- 1:02:57Third and 10 plus we're dropping 8.
- 1:03:00We're rushing 3. The quarterbacks back there
- 1:03:03baking the cake, doing his taxes, plenty of time for the
- 1:03:05routes to progress and converted all but one first down on 3rd
- 1:03:10down when we dropped eight in coverage when we blitzed, they
- 1:03:13only converted one for the whole game.
- 1:03:15So I think it's more from a play calling standpoint of if, if
- 1:03:19we're in 3rd and long, we have to blitz otherwise we're not
- 1:03:21going to be successful. They're they're that defense is
- 1:03:24at its best when it's very, very aggressive and blitzing a lot
- 1:03:27may get a get burned every now and then.
- 1:03:29We got burned on two runs against East Carolina with it.
- 1:03:31But sending 3 and dropping 8 is basically my nightmare when I
- 1:03:36see it unfold on the field and I'm just ducking my head until I
- 1:03:39hear a whistle and I'm hoping it's not because someone's in
- 1:03:41the end zone. So you're you're not getting
- 1:03:44home with three very often then? No, no, you're three on five,
- 1:03:49especially if they're SEC East Carolina had a great front 7.
- 1:03:52And I know Tech's defensive front is really, really tough
- 1:03:55too. So our offensive front is is
- 1:03:57pretty tough. So yeah, three minute front's
- 1:03:59not going to get it done. We got at least send one
- 1:04:00linebacker to make things spicy. Now let me ask this because with
- 1:04:04that 35 do y'all have a true nose or are y'all playing more
- 1:04:07of like what is it Brian? Probably like a 2 shade eye
- 1:04:11trying to make it off like off centered inside there.
- 1:04:16Yeah, we're, we're usually off center.
- 1:04:18We don't necessarily have a true nose tackle.
- 1:04:22You know, Denzel Lowry is probably that guy.
- 1:04:25Where's #8 up the middle. He's had some pretty good
- 1:04:27success there. But typically we are shading to
- 1:04:29one side or the other because usually someone's either firing
- 1:04:33from a gap or firing from the outside, from the linebacker,
- 1:04:35the secondary. So we're trying to create the
- 1:04:37that leverage on the offensive line.
- 1:04:40Yeah, usually that's more of a one gap, even though it's a
- 1:04:43three man front, it's usually one gap versus A2 gap with the
- 1:04:47335 S. Most of the time there's going
- 1:04:50to be a shade situation there. But yeah, so I mean, I mean,
- 1:04:55that kind of wraps up what we want to talk about on the
- 1:04:57defense. I appreciate that, Gary.
- 1:04:59Let's flip it over to the offense.
- 1:05:02You got offensive coordinator Kevin Decker running that up
- 1:05:06tempo offense. What can we expect from that
- 1:05:09offense and kind of what are some of the bread and butter
- 1:05:12calls in that offense? The offense is a bit of a
- 1:05:16dumpster fire right now. They have been terrible in the
- 1:05:20first two games. Even though it's a good
- 1:05:21competition, we're just not not doing the right things back
- 1:05:24there. It is a very up tempo offense.
- 1:05:28You will not see us huddle when a play is over.
- 1:05:30We're going to the line immediately and if you're not
- 1:05:33set, if you got the wrong personnel, we're going to snap
- 1:05:36it with 3536 seconds on the play clock and go.
- 1:05:39If you don't like the look, then we'll kind of back off and snap
- 1:05:41it around about 25 seconds. So a lot of plays it's going to
- 1:05:45move quickly. This is basically the same
- 1:05:48offense that they run at Tennessee right now under Josh
- 1:05:51Heipol. It's very much a spread.
- 1:05:54You will we will have a receiver on both sides of the field
- 1:05:56outside the number on pretty much every play.
- 1:05:59We're we're going to make you defend the the whole width of
- 1:06:01the field there. But really, truly it's a running
- 1:06:05offense because the idea is to spread them out, get mismatches
- 1:06:08and leverage up front and be able to run the football.
- 1:06:11That's when we were at our best last year is when, you know, we
- 1:06:15were, we were able to do those things and move the ball down
- 1:06:17the field. I, I don't feel like the offense
- 1:06:19has ever fully clicked and I don't know if that's personnel
- 1:06:22or what it is. We have a lot of problems up
- 1:06:24front in our offensive line as well, but when it clicks, it
- 1:06:29goes fast. I mean we're talking 3 plays, 75
- 1:06:31yards, 22 seconds have come off the clock and it's a touchdown.
- 1:06:35We'll go 3 and out the next 6 drives and you're always just
- 1:06:37waiting for like that one big chunk play that's going to bust
- 1:06:40it open. That's why I feel like we've
- 1:06:42been in so many one possession games because the defense has
- 1:06:44been strong and the offense hits those big plays every now and
- 1:06:48then to just keep us right in the game.
- 1:06:52I think you asked about bread and butter calls, ton of RPO
- 1:06:56looks, a lot of RPO alerts. So you truly have the the run
- 1:07:00pass option there. You're gonna see a lot of
- 1:07:03interesting delayed routes on the outside where we run.
- 1:07:08We usually run like stacks. So for four Y, we've got 2
- 1:07:11receivers, cleat de cleat on the outside the numbers.
- 1:07:14So you're going to see a lot of funny things with that where it
- 1:07:16looks like a screen and then it's slant and then it's go and
- 1:07:19the other guys running kind of a wheel route.
- 1:07:21I had some really weird route combos that happened out there.
- 1:07:23So we run a lot of that. Where we've been struggling
- 1:07:26right now is we have no short intermediate passing game over
- 1:07:29the middle. So East Carolina, they put six
- 1:07:32in the box even when we had four wide.
- 1:07:34They just trusted their single coverage and that they would get
- 1:07:36home to get pressure before the ball could get out.
- 1:07:39And that's what they did to us all night.
- 1:07:41And it killed us in the running game from that that way because
- 1:07:43we were outnumbered. And then it killed us in the
- 1:07:45passing game because the online cannot hold up the pass block.
- 1:07:49I imagine we're going to come with a very similar road map
- 1:07:52because that, that's what we like to do anyway.
- 1:07:55And that kind of plays a little bit into, into what we do well.
- 1:07:58So I, I expect a lot of that on our side, trying to play as much
- 1:08:02man as possible, trying to get after the quarterback as much as
- 1:08:04possible. And, and we'll, we'll we'll
- 1:08:06hopefully hold up in the in the rushing attack and, and keep
- 1:08:09that in check. But yeah, so you, you got the
- 1:08:14bread and butter. Shelton, do you have anything on
- 1:08:16on the offense as far as the team is concerned that you
- 1:08:18wanted to throw in here? Yeah, so, so I was looking at
- 1:08:22the the stats for Grant Wilson at quarterback.
- 1:08:24It's kind of funny you mentioned the the lack of the intermediate
- 1:08:26passing game. You know, statistically ODU
- 1:08:29doesn't throw deep a ton. They do go over over the middle
- 1:08:33a lot. And and those intermediate
- 1:08:35throws are just not being very efficient with them.
- 1:08:37So I assume, you know, that's kind of a kind of a major
- 1:08:39problem. But for Wilson, you know, he had
- 1:08:41a pretty decent game against BT last year from what I recall,
- 1:08:44PFS stats not great, not very kind to him so far, kind of
- 1:08:49right around right around 43, which is, which is rough.
- 1:08:52And he's also been pressured 30 times, which is the most among
- 1:08:56all Group of Five quarterbacks thus far.
- 1:08:58So I guess I'd ask you what have been the weak spots for him this
- 1:09:03year And and do you think the O line has maybe made things a
- 1:09:05little bit more difficult for him?
- 1:09:08The other line's definitely been a problem, just protection in
- 1:09:10general mixed with some play calling.
- 1:09:12A lot of our routes that are even intermediate and deep are
- 1:09:16longer developing routes. They're keying off another
- 1:09:18receiver, sometimes their choice routes, things like that.
- 1:09:22So he has been under pressure a ton, he has been flushed from
- 1:09:25the pocket a ton. And really like our our short
- 1:09:29game that we've hit is usually like quick curls, quick hitches
- 1:09:32to the outside, kind of some tunnel screen action too.
- 1:09:36That's where we've been like, that's our short game for the
- 1:09:39most part. We do run a ton of deep
- 1:09:41crossers. So you'll see you guys come from
- 1:09:44the outside, the numbers all the way, the numbers on the other
- 1:09:46side. You know, I think Grant, he had
- 1:09:50fumble problems at South Carolina.
- 1:09:52Both of the fumbles that were there were the ones inside our
- 1:09:55own 10 that led to those touchdowns and really why we
- 1:09:57lost that game. He was a little bit better
- 1:10:00protecting the ball I think against East Carolina, but
- 1:10:02almost more of not risking throws, which is problematic in
- 1:10:06our offense. You need to take those deep
- 1:10:07shots when you get them. But really like all all the
- 1:10:11difficulties he's having stem from the offensive line we
- 1:10:14faced. 2 good ones for sure. Kyle Kennard at South Carolina
- 1:10:17is one of the best edge rushers I've ever seen in person in my
- 1:10:20life. I mean, he was blown past the
- 1:10:22left tackle like he was standing still.
- 1:10:26But we, we've got to clean up that pass protection because he
- 1:10:28just, he, he is getting pushed out of the pocket in under 2
- 1:10:32seconds in most spots. So he's not even on 2nd read
- 1:10:35before that happens. But his status for Saturday is
- 1:10:39actually very, very much in the air right now.
- 1:10:44Yeah, we were reading about that.
- 1:10:46Are we expected if he can't go, are we going to see Colton
- 1:10:49Joseph or are we going to see somebody else further down the
- 1:10:52depth chart? I got a tiptoe around this one
- 1:10:56because I know the answer and I'm not telling it.
- 1:10:58There we go. OK.
- 1:11:00I respect that. I'll give you a rundown of who's
- 1:11:02behind Grant. So Colton Joseph red shirt
- 1:11:05freshman is from California dual threat guy, a little bit bigger
- 1:11:10than grant big arm ton of confidence we've seen in in
- 1:11:14spring ball hasn't looked great, hasn't looked great in practice,
- 1:11:18especially with past accuracy and decision making, which this
- 1:11:21offense is very much all right. I've got to know what choice my
- 1:11:24receiver's going to take because they have 3.
- 1:11:26So you have to be In Sync with your receivers and know your
- 1:11:29timing. He has not played in a game for
- 1:11:31us at all. Who if if it's not Grant, it
- 1:11:35will be someone who has not taken an FBS snap in at least
- 1:11:38two years. So got that I've got Quinn
- 1:11:41Hennikle is a true freshman. He just joined the team in
- 1:11:46summer camp. Probably not likely to play, but
- 1:11:47he's like if you clone Grant Wilson, they look the same.
- 1:11:51They got the same bill, they move the same on the field, they
- 1:11:53run the same style of offenses and things like that.
- 1:11:56He's an option. And then Emmett Morehead, who
- 1:11:59was a transfer of this offseason from Boston College.
- 1:12:01Emmett played some at BC, got hurt and didn't play much after
- 1:12:05that. Both of the all three of these
- 1:12:07guys are are dual threats. Colton Joseph is probably the
- 1:12:10faster of the group. He kind of runs like a deer and
- 1:12:13he is a lot stronger than he looks.
- 1:12:16So if you're a, a corner that's 165 lbs and you go for the big
- 1:12:20hit on him, might wake up looking for your mouthpiece
- 1:12:22because he's a he's a big boy. So you'll have to wait and see
- 1:12:26when the first offense comes out who is in at quarterback because
- 1:12:31I I will not be not be the one to let that cat out of the bag.
- 1:12:35I can appreciate that, Curtis, what you got?
- 1:12:37Well, we'll know it's six O clock.
- 1:12:39Let's talk a little bit about y'all's running game.
- 1:12:42Obviously it it's been a little bit of a struggle this year, but
- 1:12:45it looks like you guys are leaning pretty heavy on Aaron
- 1:12:49Young, who's leading the team in Russian.
- 1:12:52And how's Bryce Duke going? That's a former Hokie that
- 1:12:55transferred to ODU this offseason.
- 1:12:58How much PT is he getting? And you know, just a little bit
- 1:13:00about the running backroom. Yeah, well, I'll start and stay
- 1:13:03on the injury theme. Devin Roche was really slated to
- 1:13:06be our top running back. We were going to rotate a lot of
- 1:13:09guys, but he was he was the bell cow.
- 1:13:11He is the elusive back, super fast.
- 1:13:14You will lose him in a crowd and then he's in the end zone.
- 1:13:17He's super quick. He got a nice welcoming down
- 1:13:20there in Columbia on the opening kick off.
- 1:13:22Some guy just tried to go can opener on his on his shoe with
- 1:13:25his foot still in it. So he has not touched the field
- 1:13:28since then. Don't know his status for
- 1:13:30Saturday, but imagine similar to Jason Henderson by week coming
- 1:13:34up at Bowling Green. Probably not likely.
- 1:13:37So Aaron Young is has carried the bulk of it.
- 1:13:39He he can be elusive as well. He's a little bit more of a
- 1:13:41power runner. They run a lot of inside zone
- 1:13:44with him, a lot of inside zone counters with some some pulling
- 1:13:47tackles and we're able to do that hard nosed runner.
- 1:13:51We've seen him take some snaps in the Wildcat, some of our goal
- 1:13:54line sets. He's been doing great.
- 1:13:57Bryce Duke, I've talked to him a time.
- 1:13:59I think I talked to him like a week after he committed to ODU
- 1:14:02and and interviewed him. That's actually on our our
- 1:14:03YouTube channel for ODU monarchist.
- 1:14:06He's gotten some playing time, hasn't found a lot of success
- 1:14:10yet. He had a he had a rough fumble
- 1:14:12on a a kick return against East Carolina that that hurt us on
- 1:14:17Saturday. But I think he's just still
- 1:14:19getting a feel for this offense and trying to figure out the O
- 1:14:22line in front of them, which I'd say everyone's trying to figure
- 1:14:25that out right now. But I think where he's going to
- 1:14:29be most useful for us is when he's lined up at running back
- 1:14:32and then goes out to the slot. Able to do a lot of stuff in the
- 1:14:35short passing game here too. Yeah, he definitely had some
- 1:14:40success with us in the passing game, whether it's like a pop
- 1:14:43pass or or stuff like that where we could get him the ball in
- 1:14:47space between the hashes and let him do some damage there.
- 1:14:50So he's definitely a threat from that standpoint.
- 1:14:55Before we flip it over, Shelton, do you have anything else on the
- 1:14:57running game for for OD you want to throw in here?
- 1:15:01Not too much. I know they're they're per rush
- 1:15:05averages aren't great Duke around 1 and young around 3.6.
- 1:15:09So yeah, I mean, we just know it's you know, they haven't done
- 1:15:14much on the ground this year. Again, small sample size
- 1:15:15strength this casual. You played a really good South
- 1:15:17Carolina team, or at least what I think is a solid South
- 1:15:20Carolina team. So I was going to have to kind
- 1:15:22of wait and see how the rest of the season plays out.
- 1:15:26All right, so let's move it outside.
- 1:15:28I know you've already talked a little bit about what they do
- 1:15:30from a receiver standpoint. A lot of choice routes.
- 1:15:33Some of those you know, delay routes, who are the guys that
- 1:15:37are catching the passes out there outside the hashes.
- 1:15:40Yeah, Deonte Vines is probably the first one that comes to
- 1:15:43mind. He's transferred in from Iowa
- 1:15:45last year and we may already have more offense than Iowa had
- 1:15:48all of last season. Even though we've been off
- 1:15:50awful. He's he's getting to stretch his
- 1:15:52legs a little bit with us. He is, as of summer camp, the
- 1:15:56fastest player on our team, which is impressive because one
- 1:15:59of our other wide receivers was a track star at South Carolina
- 1:16:03before coming here and and playing football.
- 1:16:06He does a great job of getting in space.
- 1:16:08I think he's probably the best on in our receiving corps of
- 1:16:12being able to read defenses and make the best decisions in his
- 1:16:15choice routes so far. So he's definitely one that to,
- 1:16:18to watch out for there. Isaiah Page, he's been with our
- 1:16:21program for quite a while. Small, he's like 5657 small,
- 1:16:27small guy, but man, he is fast and he is elusive.
- 1:16:30Like if, if you're not in front of him, he's he's blowing past
- 1:16:33you. He had a, a big game against
- 1:16:35South Carolina. I kind of, you know, we, we took
- 1:16:39the, we got the opening kick off in that game.
- 1:16:41We ran 2 plays, fumble at the seven and then South Carolina
- 1:16:44scored on 3rd and goal. So you can just feel the
- 1:16:46momentum just fall right out of it.
- 1:16:48We get to kick off first play, Isaiah Page busts his corner,
- 1:16:52corner falls down and he just goes for like an 80 yard or 75
- 1:16:56yard touchdown pass. So he has that big play
- 1:16:58potential. He is also a brave soul because
- 1:17:02he's the one that will stand all the way on the other side of the
- 1:17:04field and catch a screen pass without looking at the
- 1:17:06cornerback screaming down on him.
- 1:17:08So tough guy. He was a little banged up at
- 1:17:11South Carolina. He played the full game when we
- 1:17:12had E come to Norfolk, so I really like him, but Kelby
- 1:17:16Williams played a good bit for us last year.
- 1:17:19He's going to be more of your your far outside receiver.
- 1:17:23I think he only had two snaps in the East Carolina game and one
- 1:17:27was a a touchdown pass on kind of a busted play and he just
- 1:17:31kept going on his deep crosser and was wide open.
- 1:17:33So a lot of guys there, no one's really stepped up to be the
- 1:17:36number one. Like we don't have the Ollie
- 1:17:38Jennings anymore. He would be like the clear
- 1:17:40number one guy. But I think that actually makes
- 1:17:42us a little more dangerous in the way we run our offense
- 1:17:44because you can't just say top corner on top receiver and shut
- 1:17:47it down. Makes us a little bit more
- 1:17:49dynamic in the receiving core. All right.
- 1:17:54Well, that, that's good stuff. Let's talk about some of those
- 1:17:58areas of weakness. And I think you've already
- 1:17:59really highlighted this pretty, pretty good, but talk a little
- 1:18:03bit about what you see going wrong with that offensive line
- 1:18:06and what's maybe holding that offense back from taking that
- 1:18:09step? Yeah, well we plugged in a lot
- 1:18:11of new guys on the offensive line.
- 1:18:13We have 3 new starters there. The one you want to watch out
- 1:18:17for the most are left guard Zach Barlev was a transfer in from
- 1:18:21Illinois. Great guy.
- 1:18:23Like if you think of Midwestern offensive lineman, like he is
- 1:18:26the the stereotype to AT super nice but mean as hell when he's
- 1:18:31on the field. So we've had problems that left
- 1:18:33tackle with basically just not having the footwork and the
- 1:18:36speed to take care of an edge, not being able to identify
- 1:18:40stunts that are that are breaking back to the inside.
- 1:18:43I had some issues at right guard, but I think we've we've
- 1:18:45shored those up with the new person plugging in there.
- 1:18:48I doubt you're going to see the same old line that we saw at
- 1:18:51East Carolina or South Carolina. I think there's some some
- 1:18:53changes that have been made there.
- 1:18:55So you're going to have more new on the field.
- 1:18:57So I'm glad this game is in Norfolk and not Blacksburg so
- 1:19:00they can actually have a conversation with each other.
- 1:19:04Yeah. Like they're they're getting
- 1:19:05beat on the outside. And when we adjust to kind of
- 1:19:07protect, all right, we're not going to let the edges beat us
- 1:19:09around the corner again. They come with a blitz right up
- 1:19:12the middle and blaster center right off the ball.
- 1:19:14So just really in in the past protection, they're struggling.
- 1:19:18We should have run the ball better against East Carolina,
- 1:19:21but we didn't have a single situation on the inside zone
- 1:19:24where the the running back actually bounced it to the
- 1:19:26outside. We should know to do that
- 1:19:29because East Carolina did that exact play to us twice for two
- 1:19:32of their touchdown runs. But everything was just a gap, a
- 1:19:35gap, a gap all day. And it was driving us bananas
- 1:19:38sitting in the end zone watching it and seeing it all kind of
- 1:19:41unfold in front of us. So there's that.
- 1:19:43And then just the the route concepts being called are not
- 1:19:46matching the pressure that we're getting.
- 1:19:48You know, the easiest way to beat a blitz is to throw the
- 1:19:50receivers in the vacated area, right?
- 1:19:52We didn't do that once even though ECU was totally fine
- 1:19:56showing us exactly what they were going to do on defense.
- 1:19:59So offensive line and our offensive line protection
- 1:20:03problems are causing receiving problems and vice versa.
- 1:20:05So hopefully they're getting that worked out this week,
- 1:20:09potentially with a new quarterback.
- 1:20:11So that's a whole new wrinkle to this.
- 1:20:13I'm sure we'll see some new stuff, but.
- 1:20:15Yeah, potentially out starting quarterback, potentially out
- 1:20:19starting running back. Our our top tight end who is
- 1:20:22like the go juice for our running game who kind of does a
- 1:20:25lot to clear holes for us. He hasn't played a snap yet this
- 1:20:28season. I doubt he's going to be back on
- 1:20:29Saturday. So we've got a £300 offensive
- 1:20:33lineman, occasionally we're an 83 and line up at tight end if
- 1:20:36you want to see something real fun all.
- 1:20:38Right. I do love seeing big boys
- 1:20:40outside so I I hope we see at least a little bit of that.
- 1:20:43Always fun to hear that. All right, one last question
- 1:20:46before we let you get out of here, Gary.
- 1:20:47Again, check out Gary ODU Monarchist.
- 1:20:50I'm sure they've got a great preview episode for the Hokie.
- 1:20:52So if you want to wonder what the ODU fan is thinking about
- 1:20:56our Hokies, check out Gary's podcast over on College Huddle
- 1:21:00Network. What ingredients could lead to
- 1:21:04another Monarcho upset of the visiting Hokie Hokies this
- 1:21:09Saturday? Well you already know there's
- 1:21:11some voodoo sprinkled in Norfolk when y'all come to town.
- 1:21:14Like, weird stuff happens, you get weird games, you get a guy
- 1:21:17who's now a pastor throw for like 500 yards.
- 1:21:20Elevators. Breakdown elevators.
- 1:21:22Breakdown. Yeah, let let me just comment on
- 1:21:25that. If you understand what the
- 1:21:27weight limits are in an elevator, that will not happen
- 1:21:30to you. All right.
- 1:21:32Believe it that I I think for ODU on the field, the defense is
- 1:21:36going to need to repeat the performances they had against
- 1:21:39South Carolina. You all run somewhat similar
- 1:21:43offenses with a little bit better you.
- 1:21:45You all have the better quarterback at that position.
- 1:21:48So we need to repeat performance of that to let our defense keep
- 1:21:51us in the game. Offense has to either hit two to
- 1:21:55three big shots down the field for touchdowns or actually
- 1:21:58develop a short intermediate passing game.
- 1:22:00If we do one of those two things on offense, I think we're back
- 1:22:03in, we'll be in our, our 14th 1 score game of our last 16 games.
- 1:22:07So we'll, I think that'll keep us in it.
- 1:22:09So just keep playing tight defense and at some point the
- 1:22:13offense has to click with whoever is going to be under
- 1:22:15center. But that, that's kind of the,
- 1:22:17the key thing. And you know, weird special
- 1:22:19teams play would would help as well.
- 1:22:22Oh no, you'll never get those down there.
- 1:22:25Yeah, let's not snap another one to Williamsburg this time,
- 1:22:28please. Oh my gosh.
- 1:22:30That had some distance on it, I will say.
- 1:22:32Worst snap of that, actually, I'm going to go back.
- 1:22:35That might be the worst snap I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:22:37I I feel like my kids play in the court in my cul-de-sac here.
- 1:22:41I've seen them snap the ball better than that one.
- 1:22:44And Brian, me and you, we threw things in this.
- 1:22:47This is my man cave. We threw things when that
- 1:22:49happened two years ago in this very room.
- 1:22:52So. Yeah, I I still couldn't believe
- 1:22:55it. Like that's, that's the farthest
- 1:22:56I've seen the snap go. So like now I know how far along
- 1:22:58snapper can actually snap the ball down the field.
- 1:23:01It's not caught. There you go.
- 1:23:04Appreciate you coming on with us tonight, Gary.
- 1:23:07Like I said, go ahead and shout out your your socials.
- 1:23:10Go ahead and shout out your your website and let the folks know
- 1:23:13where they can catch you. Yep, at ODU Monarchist for
- 1:23:17pretty much all of our social handles, ODU monarchist.com.
- 1:23:21Come take a look there. We've got a lot of interesting
- 1:23:24stuff there, some good previews. We'll have some other stuff
- 1:23:27coming out on there as well leading up to game day.
- 1:23:30But appreciate you all having me on.
- 1:23:31It was a lot of fun. Are any of you coming down to
- 1:23:33Norfolk this weekend? We will not be there this
- 1:23:37weekend, but we're hoping for good things for the Hokies.
- 1:23:40We've got to got to get that monkey off our back at some
- 1:23:42point down there in Norfolk. 100% appreciate it, Gary.
- 1:23:47Yeah. Thank you all so much.
- 1:23:48Thank you. All right, again, we appreciate
- 1:23:52Gary taking a little time out of his evening to join us, give a
- 1:23:56little bit more insight on the ODU monarchs.
- 1:24:00Again, check him out. Check that out.
- 1:24:02Siegel went over there a little earlier this week.
- 1:24:04I've had a little conversation with them.
- 1:24:06Correct, Sir. No, no.
- 1:24:08You didn't. I thought you were you supposed
- 1:24:10to. We we, we were talking, but we
- 1:24:12never, we never got. Going we'll still go listen to
- 1:24:15those guys because clearly I I'll give Gary all credit here,
- 1:24:17man, looks like Gary knows his stuff.
- 1:24:20Very focused. So probably got a got a lot of
- 1:24:22breakdowns of what they're looking at with the potential
- 1:24:26with the potential of what could happen to them with the Hokies
- 1:24:28coming to town. So again, thanks Gary for that.
- 1:24:31And now, boys, let's flip it over.
- 1:24:32We got to talk about the Hokie keys and Shelton.
- 1:24:37What is some of your keys to a Hokie's victory this week?
- 1:24:41Yeah, well, I thought about this question earlier today.
- 1:24:44I feel like it'd be the most cliche thing ever to say good up
- 1:24:47to a good start, but I guess it applies.
- 1:24:49I'll say, I'll say this. I'll say I want to see this team
- 1:24:53dominate the line of scrimmage. I mean, we've seen through two
- 1:24:56games now. You know, they didn't they
- 1:24:58didn't dominate the line of scrimmage against Vanderbilt.
- 1:25:00They did for one, but not the first half.
- 1:25:03You know, I just think I want to see them just, you know, come
- 1:25:05out and punch, punch. Oh, do you right in the nose.
- 1:25:08You know, I, I think, you know, if, if Tech is, you know, in a
- 1:25:12dog fight with a team like, you know, 10-7 after the first
- 1:25:14quarter or 1710 at halftime, like I'm, I'm not going to feel
- 1:25:18great. Like I think I, I think how you,
- 1:25:21how you look matters even, even if you win.
- 1:25:24And I just, I want to see this team really dominate.
- 1:25:27I have a stretch where, you know, you score 2-3 touchdowns
- 1:25:30in a span of 1/4 and you know, you shut up the other team.
- 1:25:32Like we just, we haven't seen this team really dominate and
- 1:25:36just bludgeon their opposition for for a long period of time
- 1:25:40outside of that one Trish against Vanderbilt.
- 1:25:42So yeah, just just win the line of scrimmage when there's one on
- 1:25:451000 trenches. And I think that's going to be
- 1:25:47the the recipe for. Success Real quick, I want to
- 1:25:52throw tallies in here. Basically, Tally says we've got
- 1:25:55to beat the road aggregations and I understand.
- 1:25:58I think every single person here understands what that means.
- 1:26:00This current coaching Staffs Rd. record is not great.
- 1:26:04Let's get one on the board. Let's get the momentum going for
- 1:26:07winning the game on the road. That is from my buddy Tally who
- 1:26:10is out tonight. Especially on a spot where we
- 1:26:13have the last couple trips. Not, not.
- 1:26:15Shit to bed. So it's a good.
- 1:26:17Fortune man shit to bed. There is nothing else to say.
- 1:26:20It's shit to bed. We've shit to bed the last two
- 1:26:22times down there. Yeah, What about that?
- 1:26:26And that that kind of goes to my point, like we need to beat up
- 1:26:29on little brother, right? I mean, we, we said it and we've
- 1:26:31talked about it. We we are the flagship football
- 1:26:34program in the state of Virginia.
- 1:26:37What we should do is any, whether we're playing with
- 1:26:39however you feel about this road trip to Norfolk.
- 1:26:43And I know a lot of people don't like it and I get that, but we
- 1:26:48should not have a problem going down there and handling them for
- 1:26:52four quarters. I'm not saying we're going to
- 1:26:54put up 50 and shut them out or anything like that, but we
- 1:26:57should easily handle this game for four quarters.
- 1:27:01Yes, we should. Yes, we should.
- 1:27:03By the way, whatever you said was absolute facts.
- 1:27:07You spoke to Lavar there for me and I felt like Gary.
- 1:27:13I said it to Gary and I'll say it to you all again.
- 1:27:16OU is the 102nd ranked rushing defense in the country.
- 1:27:20They're giving up almost 180 yards a game.
- 1:27:22The rushing offense, we want a quick start, run it down their
- 1:27:26throats, run it down their throats.
- 1:27:29The second is their rushing offense.
- 1:27:34Well, you know, obviously they're missing a starter.
- 1:27:36The guy who's starting is effectively the backup.
- 1:27:38Yes, you do have Bryce Duke, but still they are not.
- 1:27:42They're getting 100 yards a game.
- 1:27:44So for our defense, play sound, don't play down.
- 1:27:48That goes back to what Brian said and John, kind of what
- 1:27:50you're saying to go out there and just beat them up, go play
- 1:27:55mean. And I always like this.
- 1:27:57And I know Tally, I think Tally coined this a couple probably
- 1:28:01last year. Go make them when it turns
- 1:28:04through the third quarter. I don't want to be here anymore.
- 1:28:08That's what I want to see. I want to see literally head
- 1:28:11saying like, man, they going to make business decisions
- 1:28:15throughout the game and it's going to be stepping out of our
- 1:28:17way. So there it is.
- 1:28:21And now we have to do, we always put our names on it.
- 1:28:23We always make our predictions. I got a little text from Mr.
- 1:28:28Talley a few minutes ago. Tally's feeling a little bit of
- 1:28:33a heartburn for this game. He does think the Hokies wins,
- 1:28:37but at a 2817 clip. So put that on the board for
- 1:28:42Tally. Shelton, what you got?
- 1:28:46I'll take Hokies 31 to 10. I think they're they're going to
- 1:28:49come out pretty aggressive. Just this is a big opportunity
- 1:28:54where you know you have a chance to smack these guys in the
- 1:28:56mouth. If we do that, I'm feeling a lot
- 1:28:58better about where we are as a program.
- 1:29:00If it's dogfight, man, you're you're coming to next week
- 1:29:03thinking like, oh, we don't know what this team really is yet.
- 1:29:05So I think they'll I think they'll cover.
- 1:29:09So yeah, give me, give me Hookes by three touchdowns.
- 1:29:13I've got 3 touchdowns as well, but I've got a little bit more
- 1:29:16scoring going on both directions.
- 1:29:20I've got this one coming out to 3817.
- 1:29:22I think this is the week the offense puts the pieces together
- 1:29:26and goes up there and score some points for most the better part
- 1:29:30of the four quarters that we're going to watch on Saturday at
- 1:29:33six PMI think that ODU gets a a touchdown late to kind of make
- 1:29:38it make it an interesting little more interesting contest there.
- 1:29:42But I think we're able to close it out, put it away. 3817 is
- 1:29:47what I got. 3 touchdown victory for the Hokies.
- 1:29:52All right. I'm actually not far from any of
- 1:29:56y'all whatsoever. I am at Hokies win 3820 and I
- 1:30:02get a feeling what what he said about some of their problems
- 1:30:05with their rush defense, with their blitzing.
- 1:30:07There's going to be some opportunities one-on-one if we
- 1:30:10can pass track, get the ball out quick.
- 1:30:12I think it's going to be actually kind of a role reversal
- 1:30:15of what happened with Marshall. I do think this is the week we
- 1:30:18come out quick and 3820, but I think it's one of those games as
- 1:30:23we sit in the third quarter, it's like this game's over.
- 1:30:27They can't do anything against us.
- 1:30:30They're they're not going to be able to come back from this lead
- 1:30:32we have built up in the first three, 2 1/2 quarters. 3820
- 1:30:37Hokies. All righty, we are gone.
- 1:30:42It's time. It is time Week 3 of big
- 1:30:47screeners presented by the Counts Family Pharmacy.
- 1:30:50You know what we're going to do next year?
- 1:30:51We're going to let Jeremy make picks and pick a game.
- 1:30:53What do you think about that? Oh shit, can't wait for that.
- 1:31:00All right, Is he going to make a video every week like Jason?
- 1:31:03Oh, that'd be. Awesome.
- 1:31:06About about half bottle into a Jameson's all.
- 1:31:08Righty. But hey, probably starting next
- 1:31:11week, Blacksburg on the Rocks is probably going to be the lead in
- 1:31:16for our show, man. It is.
- 1:31:17That's the plan if we can get our crap together over on our
- 1:31:21side of the house. But got to get got to get the
- 1:31:23kids sports schedules in line here and while in right now.
- 1:31:28Is what it is. Can't do much about it.
- 1:31:30All right, So we got big screeners, big slate of games
- 1:31:33this week, some good games, actually just so many games.
- 1:31:37We actually missed a couple like we do not have Alabama,
- 1:31:40Wisconsin on here again. We are put that on the board.
- 1:31:48Put put that message up real quick.
- 1:31:49It was 39 points. It ain't like that thing went to
- 1:31:5250. So get your head out of your
- 1:31:54ass. Again, again, we said it on
- 1:31:58Twitter when when he when he said, hey, you should, you
- 1:32:01should have, you should have took the over.
- 1:32:03I'm like, bro, you said hammer the over.
- 1:32:05You said you didn't say squeak over the over.
- 1:32:09You didn't say smoking heaters in the parking lot.
- 1:32:11Hoping this hits and over. And it hits 37 with about 8
- 1:32:15minutes to go. So yeah, but we got hey.
- 1:32:18If if you were betting you made some money, so good on you, yes.
- 1:32:21Exactly. Good on you.
- 1:32:22Alrighty. But by the way, that is now the
- 1:32:25third time in the last 14 games that Iowa's hit the over.
- 1:32:30Statistics say bet the under. All right, so let's go to big
- 1:32:35screeners. Brian, you're up first.
- 1:32:36Where are you heading to for your big screeners game?
- 1:32:39Let's go to K State, baby. This is an interesting game for
- 1:32:43me. You got Arizona busting into a
- 1:32:47new conference. You got K State pretty good
- 1:32:51season last year. I kind of think both of these
- 1:32:55teams are a little over ranked at this point.
- 1:32:59So I'm not really exactly sure what to expect from him, but
- 1:33:03it's, you know, it's 7 1/2 points there for K State.
- 1:33:06I'm going to take that. I think K State wins this by
- 1:33:09about 10. So give me K State here.
- 1:33:13This game is Friday night 8:00, so definitely 1.
- 1:33:16You can just sit down and enjoy without looking at 50 other
- 1:33:20games. And I am right with you Brian.
- 1:33:23I am laying that 7 1/2. I think the war that they got
- 1:33:27down at 2 lane last week where they barely squeaked by the
- 1:33:30Green Wave. I think that woke up Kansas
- 1:33:33State. I think Arizona is going to
- 1:33:35tumble to earth. Remember it was the Jet Fish
- 1:33:38program last year. Jed's up at Washington now and
- 1:33:41going into the little Apple of Manhattan, KS.
- 1:33:45I think the Wildcats win this one pretty comfortably.
- 1:33:48What about you, Sheldon? Yeah, I'm taking Arizona to
- 1:33:53cover. I I Kansas State was in a
- 1:33:55dogfight last week with Tulane. I agree with Brian, both teams
- 1:33:58probably overrated and I think it's a Friday night game and
- 1:34:02sometimes weird stuff happens on Friday nights.
- 1:34:03So I'll take the cats to cover all.
- 1:34:06Right, the Cats to cover Friday 8:00 Kansas State 14.
- 1:34:10Arizona is number 20. I am driving this week.
- 1:34:15Let's go down to Winston Salem. Hey, we got to get the other
- 1:34:18three in here. Bud.
- 1:34:19Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Tally Arizona.
- 1:34:21Sorry, man. When nobody's here, I forget.
- 1:34:23You're good. Hey, rarely do we have three of
- 1:34:26us here now read off the other 3.
- 1:34:30So hey, I'll let it slide this time.
- 1:34:33Tally's got Arizona, we got Miranda riding with K State, and
- 1:34:36Jason is also riding. With Kansas State, but we're all
- 1:34:40on the Wildcats this week. Here we go.
- 1:34:42All right, now let's go down to Winston Salem.
- 1:34:45Lane Kiffin and Jackson Dark come in to visit the Wake Forest
- 1:34:50Demon Deacons, who are basically coming off an absolute choke job
- 1:34:54versus the Wahoos last week in UVA.
- 1:34:59What a line. This is 23 1/2 points.
- 1:35:04That is a monster to lay. So Brian, I will kick to you
- 1:35:09first. Are you laying that many points?
- 1:35:13Give it to me, baby. Wake to me answered the
- 1:35:17questions that I had of can this team run it for four quarters?
- 1:35:21Can they keep up with the team that can throw it, throw the
- 1:35:24ball around a little bit. They showed me they could do it
- 1:35:27for a little bit. UVA came back in the end, pulled
- 1:35:30the upset there. Wake had had a couple problems
- 1:35:34on offense that kind of turned that game late.
- 1:35:38I think Ole Miss is just going to be too much for him.
- 1:35:41I think it's going to be about a 28 point win.
- 1:35:43SO4 touchdown victory for the. Ribs, all right.
- 1:35:48And again, with this being my game, I'm taking Ole Miss as
- 1:35:53well. I think that offense is going to
- 1:35:56probably score every time they touch the ball.
- 1:35:58I think it's going to be an entertaining game.
- 1:36:00You like offense between Clawson's mesh and then in Lane
- 1:36:04Kiffin's offense. Buckle up.
- 1:36:06Probably a big over in this situation, but I'm with you,
- 1:36:10Brian. I think it's eventually Ole Miss
- 1:36:12being the deeper, being the more talented team.
- 1:36:14They slowly pull away at the end and it's probably going to be
- 1:36:18about 28. Sheldon, what about you?
- 1:36:22Boy, 23 1/2, that's a lot of points.
- 1:36:24I think Ole Miss wins comfortably, but I think Wake
- 1:36:27Forest can score just enough to cover.
- 1:36:30All righty, what else we got? Tally is riding with you again,
- 1:36:34Sheldon, I think. I think he's fully subscribing
- 1:36:36to. If Sheldon's got them, I'm
- 1:36:38rolling. He's jumping in the car with.
- 1:36:41Sheldon, I was. I was good last week.
- 1:36:43Yeah, yeah, we didn't. You didn't put that up.
- 1:36:45I threw it at you. I threw it at you.
- 1:36:47Let me I I can, I can pull it back up here in a second.
- 1:36:49Pull that back up. I felt good about last week.
- 1:36:52Actually, most of us had good. Nobody did awful last week.
- 1:36:56Nobody did awful. Last week, All right, Miranda
- 1:36:59riding with Wake as well. Jason with me and Brian laying a
- 1:37:02lot of points. Saturday night 630 on the CWI.
- 1:37:08Wonder if they'll have the chopper down at Wake Stadium
- 1:37:11this week. So that will definitely be on
- 1:37:13the second screen here in the Wilson Man cave.
- 1:37:16All righty. What did Tally go?
- 1:37:18Oh, no. Shelton.
- 1:37:19Shelton, Shelton, you're up next.
- 1:37:21Shelton, where are you going? I'm going to the site of game
- 1:37:25day. LSU and USC EI think it's to be
- 1:37:28a pretty interesting game. Kind of an upstart South
- 1:37:31Carolina team. They've got a really good pass
- 1:37:33rush, defense looking pretty solid, but LSU good as well.
- 1:37:37I'm taking LSU in this one purely based off vibes.
- 1:37:41I think South Carolina is going to be a little bit too hyped up
- 1:37:44with college game day being in town.
- 1:37:46I think they're in for they're due for a let down game, so I
- 1:37:49will take LSU. I'm riding with LSU as well,
- 1:37:54Sheldon. I, I, I've just, I'm not sold on
- 1:37:58South Carolina being more than a six or seven win team in the
- 1:38:02SEC. So I, I think this is a game
- 1:38:05that circumstances the line where there weren't a ton of
- 1:38:09compelling matchups. Like the, the best ranked
- 1:38:11matchup you had this week is for a team that just joined a, a
- 1:38:17conference that, that you that we let off with there.
- 1:38:20So there wasn't a lot of history, wasn't a lot of super
- 1:38:22compelling ranked matchups. I feel like this kind of fell in
- 1:38:25their laps a little bit. But I I like LSU in this one.
- 1:38:28Probably at least 2 touchdowns. All righty, this one is ABC 12.
- 1:38:36I will have no shot of sitting with it watching this one
- 1:38:38because I will be at the baseball field at about 10:00.
- 1:38:41My cousin and his son are going to absolutely hate me.
- 1:38:45My cousin is a South Carolina alum.
- 1:38:47His son is a sophomore down there.
- 1:38:50I told him like he's telling he's got to go.
- 1:38:52Like he's just got to go. It is one of the most
- 1:38:54unbelievable experience you've ever been to.
- 1:38:56But unfortunately, when I make a bet, I got to do it the right
- 1:38:59way, not where the heart is. LSU wins big, and here's the big
- 1:39:04reason why. The defense, you keep a Lincoln
- 1:39:08Riley offense under 30 points, you're doing good things.
- 1:39:14And I don't think South Carolina's got anywhere near
- 1:39:16that type of offensive talent. You know, 21, I don't know,
- 1:39:242427, you know, 14, something like that.
- 1:39:30We got Shelton on there. We got his LSU pick.
- 1:39:32Tally. Literally Tally is just riding
- 1:39:36with Shelton. Miranda throwing her throwing
- 1:39:41her money behind the the Gamecocks there.
- 1:39:44She's she's on the Shane train this.
- 1:39:46Week and then we got Jason riding with the Tigers.
- 1:39:49I do have an update here for us on how we did last week.
- 1:39:54I got four out of the six. Curtis, you also got four out of
- 1:39:58the six. Tally 4 out of the six, Sheldon,
- 1:40:01five of six. Good week for Sheldon.
- 1:40:04Miranda right on right on the 50% there.
- 1:40:07Three out of the six. Jason the The Gambling
- 1:40:11guitarist, only two, two, only two.
- 1:40:15He he did get the money picked though, So he did get the money.
- 1:40:19We'll give him that. We'll give him that.
- 1:40:20That is correct. All right, Even though Tally's
- 1:40:23not here. Tally's taking us out to
- 1:40:25Columbia, MO, where the This is a rank matchup.
- 1:40:30This is where I thought they were going to go.
- 1:40:33This is where I thought game day was going to go was Columbia,
- 1:40:36MO, not Columbia South Carolina, but you got a rank match up with
- 1:40:42BC and Missouri. 1245 SEC Network.
- 1:40:50Mizzou is laying 17 points. What do you got on this one,
- 1:40:56Brian? You know what?
- 1:41:00I've I've liked what I've seen from BC and I think for this
- 1:41:04one, for me, with that Bill O'Brien LED BC team, it's not so
- 1:41:07much that I think they're going to go down there and give
- 1:41:10Missouri a ton of problems. It's that that 17 is too damn
- 1:41:13big for me to take with the way I've seen BC play so far.
- 1:41:17So I'll take BC and that that 17.
- 1:41:22Yeah, I'm with you. I'm it's, it's more of who the
- 1:41:24coach is right now at BC with Bill O'Brien.
- 1:41:28I don't think he's going to let his team get blown out by that
- 1:41:31much. And obviously we saw them have
- 1:41:34significant success against FSU, so I think they do have some
- 1:41:39confidence going down there. I don't, I don't think they can
- 1:41:41pull the upset, but I do think a lot closer than the 17 that the
- 1:41:45experts think. John, what you?
- 1:41:48Got I, I am. I am with both of you guys, I
- 1:41:51think. I think Mizzou is actually
- 1:41:53legitimately they are a top ten team for sure, no doubt.
- 1:41:56But that 17 was just a little bit too much for me.
- 1:42:00You're good. You're not 17 points good, by
- 1:42:02the way. Just go boom, boom, boom, boom
- 1:42:06boom. This is the consensus pick this
- 1:42:08week. Everybody's ride with the
- 1:42:11Eagles, man. Everybody's ride six complete.
- 1:42:13Soaring personalities. Soaring with the fucking Eagles.
- 1:42:166 completely different career paths. 6 completely different
- 1:42:20locations. We're all riding with the
- 1:42:24Eagles. Lay the 17 and hold on.
- 1:42:28All righty Miranda, we should have let her announce this
- 1:42:30earlier. She is going down to the swamp
- 1:42:33with the the Florida Gators in the Texas A&M Aggies.
- 1:42:38Aggies. Is that up there Brian?
- 1:42:40I don't see. There we go.
- 1:42:41Aggies are a A4 point favorite. So, Gators getting points at
- 1:42:50home, something you rarely, rarely see.
- 1:42:55Brian, where are you on this one?
- 1:42:58There's a reason for it. That Florida team has looked
- 1:43:00like dog shit so far in the 2024 campaign.
- 1:43:05And I think it continues. And I think this is a game where
- 1:43:07we figure out if, you know, Notre Dame is thrown out one
- 1:43:13great game and one dud or whether A&M is just not that
- 1:43:18great of a team. I I think they're going to prove
- 1:43:20that there's, you know, they're a little bit more than than that
- 1:43:23first game showed. So I'm going to take A&M to win
- 1:43:26by about a touchdown here. I'm, I'm, I'm with you.
- 1:43:31I'm definitely going to lay the points here, give Florida the
- 1:43:34four points just of where they are vibe wise.
- 1:43:38I think A&M yet they lost to Notre Dame.
- 1:43:41I think still, I think Elkos are good enough to coach to turn
- 1:43:44them around. I think this is the one that it
- 1:43:48doesn't set the chair on fire, but they're dumping the gasoline
- 1:43:51on the chair after this week for Billy Napier.
- 1:43:54I think I think A&M wins. Give me something like a like a
- 1:44:0027 to 17 game. Like it's one of those it's
- 1:44:05probably not going to be in doubt the whole way for A&M.
- 1:44:08So, but probably entertaining 2717 Gators Shelton.
- 1:44:15Yeah, I like A and MI, just think I like Alpho.
- 1:44:18I think they've just got too much talent on that roster not
- 1:44:20to start, you know, putting it together eventually.
- 1:44:22So I think this will be the start of a start of a good run
- 1:44:25for them all. Right tally, Tally's rod.
- 1:44:30With A&M and then we got the two Gators on the tail in there with
- 1:44:34Miranda and Jason. They're saying home game in the
- 1:44:37Swamp with the Gators given 4 points.
- 1:44:40Looks like they're riding with that.
- 1:44:41They're riding with the swamp effect.
- 1:44:43They're riding with the swamp effect all righty, so our
- 1:44:47gambling guitarist this week is taking it to Tallahassee.
- 1:44:52Well, since my baby left found new place to dwell.
- 1:45:19Welcome back to another week of guitar licks and gambling picks.
- 1:45:23I'm Jason Long. We got the dub last week when
- 1:45:25the Vols rolled over the Wolfpack.
- 1:45:28Looking to keep that street going down in Tallahassee when
- 1:45:30Memphis takes on Florida State. Now, Memphis might be the home
- 1:45:34of the King, but the Seminoles are the ones who have been
- 1:45:37living in Heartbreak Hotel lately.
- 1:45:39Haven't started the season. Oh, and two.
- 1:45:41And things don't get easier this week when Memphis comes to town.
- 1:45:44They're probably the best team they've played yet.
- 1:45:46It's possible the Tigers head back to Bill St.
- 1:45:50Three and oh, so I'm taking Memphis plus 6 1/2 on the road
- 1:45:54this week against Florida State. All righty, there is Jason.
- 1:46:31Obviously Jason with his rendition of Heartbreak Hotel by
- 1:46:35the late, great Elvis Presley is going Memphis.
- 1:46:38Give him the points. Brian, you riding with the
- 1:46:41guitar man are you? Are you pushing him off to the
- 1:46:44side? I'm going with the Fighting
- 1:46:47Silver fields out there in Memphis.
- 1:46:49You have to, right? You have to, right?
- 1:46:52You can't. I mean, you got to tell a little
- 1:46:53back story here. So when I was a a young buck
- 1:46:58just starting college, there was this this very, very young
- 1:47:02assistant on our on our team working with the DNS freshman
- 1:47:08year out there. I got to play a lot of scout
- 1:47:10team, got to know him pretty well.
- 1:47:12And that guy's now the head coach of the Memphis Tigers, Ron
- 1:47:15Silverfield. So really good guy, really good
- 1:47:18coach. And even at the young age of I
- 1:47:21think it was like 21 or 22 at the time, he was had just either
- 1:47:25just graduated or was was graduating that year from
- 1:47:29Hamden. Sydney was already a very good
- 1:47:31coach and and we see where his careers went since then.
- 1:47:34So give me them Memphis Tigers. Yeah, and I'm right with you on
- 1:47:39this. Give me the Tigers as well just
- 1:47:40because of what we have seen from FSU the first two weeks.
- 1:47:44They just had a bye week. That's all good and well.
- 1:47:47But if DJ you still a quarterback and they had haven't
- 1:47:50fixed any of those issues, take the points because I think
- 1:47:55Memphis could win this game outright and send the Seminoles
- 1:47:58to O and three. When I when I pick games, I tend
- 1:48:04to favorite teams that have dealt with some adversity,
- 1:48:08especially early in the year. You know, they're they're kind
- 1:48:09of frustrated because I think they're going to bounce back.
- 1:48:12In this case, I think MSC would definitely bounce back.
- 1:48:15They will cover. I think they win by a pretty
- 1:48:16comfortable margin here. So I got the noise.
- 1:48:18I think they're going to, they're going to come out pretty
- 1:48:20pissed off. They heard the noise, they heard
- 1:48:21the criticism and they're going to respond on Saturday.
- 1:48:25All right, and Tally and Miranda got on the bus with Shelton and
- 1:48:30obviously us Halifax boys are riding together tonight.
- 1:48:36So there's big screens. Let's put the big board up
- 1:48:38there. Yeah, there it is.
- 1:48:41There it is. There it is.
- 1:48:43Who who did the best tonight, Y'all, y'all, y'all drop a
- 1:48:47comment in there. Hit us up on Twitter.
- 1:48:49Let us know who you think has the best big board heading into
- 1:48:53the weekend. Well, this is great, Brian.
- 1:48:56It's it's it's the Shelton tally combo and against me and you
- 1:48:59because look at that board exact same minds.
- 1:49:06The question is, which great minds?
- 1:49:08This week we shall find out. From and, you know, and, and
- 1:49:10maybe Miranda comes out on top because she's the only one I
- 1:49:13think with a couple left field picks compared to, to most
- 1:49:15everybody else there. So.
- 1:49:17She pivoted on a couple of them and so we will see.
- 1:49:20All right. Anything coming across the wire,
- 1:49:24Coming across the Twittersphere, coming across the Anything in
- 1:49:27the last few minutes, last few hours here.
- 1:49:30Hey, we're all set, man. I think we're ready to punch it.
- 1:49:32All righty. Well, that does wrap up this
- 1:49:35episode of the Boundary Corner podcast brought to you by Counts

- 1:50:16we have loved. I've known Jason since the 4th
- 1:50:19grade, y'all. So I've known him about as long
- 1:50:22as I've known Siegel. And Siegel, you've known him as

- 1:50:44The.
