- 0:25or on our website at watwm.org, We invite you to sit down with us as we look
- 0:31to the scriptures to learn more about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Have you ever thought about what it really means to live out your faith?
- 1:07Not just to believe it in your heart, but to let your obedience show to the world around you?
- 1:12In Deuteronomy chapter 27, Moses reminds the Israelites that faith was never meant to be hidden.
- 1:19As they prepared to enter the promised land, God called them to demonstrate
- 1:23their faith in visible ways, to write his law on stones, to build an altar of
- 1:28worship, and to proclaim their obedience for all to see.
- 1:31This chapter is about a faith that acts, obedience that speaks,
- 1:36and hearts that are devoted to God in both word and in deed.
- 1:40In a world that often values comfort over conviction, Deuteronomy 27 calls us
- 1:47back to a faith that is lived out loud, a faith that obeys.
- 1:52Join us this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast as Erica Close
- 1:57walks us through Deuteronomy chapter 27.
- 2:00Let's learn together how obedience flows from faith and how a life of visible
- 2:05devotion to God gives him glory.
- 2:08Join with me as we hop right in to Deuteronomy chapter 27.
- 2:14And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying,
- 2:18Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
- 2:21And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which
- 2:26the Lord thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones,
- 2:30and plaster them with plaster.
- 2:32And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed
- 2:36over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee,
- 2:41a land that floweth with milk and honey, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
- 2:47Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these
- 2:52stones, which I command you this day, in Mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster.
- 2:58And there shalt thou build an altar unto the Lord thy God, an altar of stones.
- 3:03Thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
- 3:06Thou shalt build the altar of the Lord thy God of whole stones,
- 3:10and thou shalt offer burnt offerings thereon unto the Lord thy God.
- 3:14And thou shalt offer peace offerings and shalt eat there and rejoice before the Lord thy God.
- 3:21And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.
- 3:25And Moses and the priests, the Levites, spake unto all Israel,
- 3:30saying, Take heed and hearken, O Israel, this day thou art become the people of the Lord thy God.
- 3:38Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the Lord thy God, and do his commandments
- 3:43and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
- 3:46And Moses charged the people the same day, saying, These shall stand upon Mount
- 3:52Gerizim to bless the people when you are come over Jordan,
- 3:56Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin.
- 4:01And these shall stand upon Mount Ebal to curse Reuben, Gad, and Asher,
- 4:08and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
- 4:10And the Levite shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice,
- 4:16Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto
- 4:21the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsmen, and putteth it in a secret
- 4:25place, and all the people shall answer, and say, Amen.
- 4:29Cursed be he that setteth light by his father and his mother,
- 4:32and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 4:35Cursed be he that removeth his neighbor's landmark, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 4:41Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way,
- 4:44and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 4:47Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, the fatherless,
- 4:51and the widow, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 4:55Cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife, because he uncovereth his father's
- 4:59skirt. All the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:03Cursed be he that lieth with any man or of beast, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:09Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father,
- 5:12or the daughter of his mother, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:17Cursed be he that lieth with his mother-in-law, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:22Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbor secretly, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:29Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person, and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:36And cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them,
- 5:40and all the people shall say, Amen.
- 5:43Well, welcome to chapter 27. While chapter 26 focused on gratitude and the tithe,
- 5:51chapter 27 is all about faith, the faith of God's people in him,
- 5:56and a faith that had to be marked by obedience that was visible to others,
- 6:00as well as built upon an inward commitment to God himself.
- 6:04The focus of this chapter after faith is obedience that follows a heart of faith.
- 6:11This chapter also demonstrates the power of reading the law,
- 6:14that by reading it, it would be sealed into memory, but also that it was necessary
- 6:18to read it and agree to it and commit to it in order to demonstrate that it truly meant something.
- 6:25As we move into this chapter, the first three verses set the scene for the commandment
- 6:29that Moses is giving the Israelites.
- 6:31He's speaking to them along with the elders and reminding them that the commandments
- 6:35which have been given to them, not just the Ten Commandments,
- 6:39but also the ceremonial and the civil laws found in chapters 14 through 26 were to be kept.
- 6:45When the Israelites crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land,
- 6:48they were to set up great stones as a monument, and they would put plaster on them.
- 6:54And then within the plaster, they were to write out all the words of the law
- 6:58on the monument before they went in to possess the land.
- 7:02Verses 4 through 8 continue this command and give additional details about what
- 7:06the Israelites were to do when they crossed the Jordan.
- 7:09They were to set up this monument on Mount Ebal, which is known as a mountain of cursing.
- 7:14And on this mountain, they were to build an altar unto the Lord thy God.
- 7:19Verse 5 specifies that the altar was to be built of whole stones,
- 7:22meaning stones that were not
- 7:24shaped or cut by tools, and therefore the stones were not the work of man.
- 7:29The altar was to be built in the way that God desired, not designed or altered by human hands.
- 7:35And on this altar, they were to offer burnt offerings to the Lord and to offer peace offerings.
- 7:41The burnt offerings were for the atonement of sins, and the peace offerings
- 7:45were an act of gratitude and of fellowship.
- 7:49They were to eat there, and they were to rejoice before the Lord their God.
- 7:54Verse 8 again reinforces this command to write all the words of the law upon.
- 7:59The stones very plainly.
- 8:01The law was to be visible, public, and clear.
- 8:06God wanted his word to be known to all people, and he wanted it to be so plain
- 8:10that no Wood can claim ignorance of what he required.
- 8:14Verses 9 and 10 show a really clear transition from the instructions about the
- 8:19altar to the call for obedience.
- 8:22In verse 9, both Moses and the priests are speaking to all of Israel,
- 8:25and they're calling for their full attention.
- 8:28We read, Take heed and hearken, O Israel, this day thou art become the people of the Lord thy God.
- 8:34These words were a powerful reminder that being God's people required more than
- 8:39just heritage or history.
- 8:42It required obedience. In verse 10, the Israelites were commanded to obey the
- 8:47voice of the Lord their God and to do his commandments and his statutes.
- 8:53This obedience wasn't merely external, but it had to reflect an inward faith
- 8:59and a devotion to that covenant relationship that God had established with them.
- 9:04The Israelites were to show that by their actions that they truly belonged to God.
- 9:11As we move into verses 11 through 14, we begin to see the beginning of the covenant
- 9:17ceremony that would take place when the Israelites entered the promised land.
- 9:22In verse 11, Moses commanded the people, giving clear instructions that six
- 9:26of the tribes were to stand upon Mount Gerizim to bless the people,
- 9:30and six were to stand upon Mount Ebal to pronounce the curses.
- 9:34The curses that would be proclaimed weren't arbitrary or they weren't cruel,
- 9:39but they were solemn warnings tied directly to disobedience.
- 9:43Each curse described a specific sin that violated God's covenant law.
- 9:49Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal faced each other across a valley near Shechem,
- 9:54and this created a natural amphitheater
- 9:57where all of Israel could hear the words that would be spoken.
- 10:01The tribes of Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin were to stand
- 10:06on Mount Gerizim to bless the people.
- 10:09And the tribes of Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebul, and Dan, and Naphtali were to stand
- 10:14on Mount Ebel to pronounce the curses.
- 10:17And these instructions were so specific, showing that God is a God of order
- 10:22and that both blessings and curses were to be heard by all.
- 10:28Verse 14 specifies that the Levites were to speak with a loud voice,
- 10:32proclaiming the words that would follow, ensuring that every Israelite could hear and understand.
- 10:39Verses 15 through 26 record the Levites' proclamation of 12 specific curses,
- 10:45and after each one, all of Israel was to respond with an amen.
- 10:50This was an act of agreement, a way for the people to affirm that they understood
- 10:54the law, accepted the consequences of disobedience, and committed to live in obedience to the Lord.
- 11:01Each curse focused on a sin that revealed disobedience to God and a lack of
- 11:06love for others, a lack of regard for their community.
- 11:10The first curse condemned idolatry, the sin of putting anything before God.
- 11:15Other curses that followed included dishonoring one's parents,
- 11:20moving a neighbor's boundary, leaving the blind astray,
- 11:24perverting justice for the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow,
- 11:28and several others that dealt with immorality, violence, deceit,
- 11:34and just plain corruption.
- 11:36The final verse, verse 26, summarized all of them.
- 11:40We read, Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them.
- 11:46This closing statement made it clear that the law was not optional.
- 11:50Obedience to God's commands was the only way to live under his blessing.
- 11:55By saying amen, the Israelites acknowledged that sin carries consequences,
- 12:01and that obedience brings life.
- 12:04This account continues in chapter 28 with the blessings, but that's for next week.
- 12:09This chapter teaches us that faith is not just inward. It must be visible.
- 12:15God required the Israelites to write his law on stones and to build an altar for all to see.
- 12:20In the same way, our faith should be public and active in our communities.
- 12:25When we live out God's word before others, we show the world who he is.
- 12:30Our obedience is not only a reflection of our faith, but also a testimony of his truth.
- 12:36The Israelites were told to write the law plainly, so plainly that anybody could
- 12:41read it and anybody could understand it.
- 12:43They literally wrote it out on a monument.
- 12:46This reminds us of the importance of keeping God's word clear in our hearts
- 12:50and visible in our lives.
- 12:53We must not complicate or obscure his commands, but live them out with sincerity
- 12:58so others can see his truth through our actions. The curses that were proclaimed
- 13:03were solemn warnings tied directly to disobedience.
- 13:08Each curse made clear that sin brought with it consequence and that God's people
- 13:16can't expect his blessings while living in rebellion to him.
- 13:21By publicly declaring both blessings and curses, God was calling his people
- 13:24to choose obedience and to choose life.
- 13:29The Israelites' response of amen
- 13:30to each curse demonstrated collective accountability in the community.
- 13:36They were agreeing before God and before each other that sin was serious and holiness was required.
- 13:43In our own lives, we also need to respond with an amen, not just in word, but in deed.
- 13:50True faith is marked by obedience, reverence, and gratitude for God's mercy.
- 13:57This chapter ends by reminding us that God's desire is to bless those who walk in obedience.
- 14:02As his people, we are called to live in faith that is visible,
- 14:07in obedience that is faithful, and in gratitude that is continual.
- 14:14God's law reveals his holiness, and our obedience reveals our love.
- 14:19Remember, you are loved.
- 14:21Jesus loves you.
