Latest / Foul Territory / Bob Nightengale: Buxton upset with Twins? Gallen’s 1-year deal, Padres get Castellanos for revenge tour
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about Nick Castianos. We were
- 0:05Speaker 1: talking about, you know, after his divorce from the Phillies,
- 0:08Speaker 1: the Padres landed him, and you put and you wrote
- 0:10Speaker 1: in your article the Padres were elated to land a
- 0:13Speaker 1: quote baller like Nick Castianos. What was your read on
- 0:17Speaker 1: this and him fitting into that clubhouse because as a
- 0:19Speaker 1: lot of people have talked about, you know, with personalities
- 0:22Speaker 1: like Manny Machado or Fernando Tatis, that seems like a
- 0:25Speaker 1: clubhouse he might fit into.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, you know, he and Manny grew up together.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I mean since you know, nine years old, played against
- 0:32Speaker 2: each other, you tournaments and everything else, so they know
- 0:35Speaker 2: each other well, you know, being born and raised in Miami. Hey,
- 0:39Speaker 2: you know the A. J. Peller did a lot of
- 0:41Speaker 2: a research. He talked to coaches who had him, players
- 0:45Speaker 2: that played with them and saying, you know what, perfect
- 0:48Speaker 2: you know, you get a freebie like many Manchatto said,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you know, pennies on the dollar, so it's a no risk. Then,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know, they didn't know about the beer incident, but
- 0:57Speaker 2: you know, like Eric and Aj said, you know, no
- 0:59Speaker 2: big deal. I remember back in the day come the Royals.
- 1:03Speaker 2: The guy was pitching no hitter, and he cracked open
- 1:05Speaker 2: a couple of beers on the bench. He's not that
- 1:08Speaker 2: big a deal, so I think they thought things got
- 1:12Speaker 2: way overblown in Philadelphia. This just gives him a fresh start.
- 1:16Speaker 3: He's excited, and it's definitely first base because this team's configuration,
- 1:22Speaker 3: he's not he's not playing right field. He's definitely not
- 1:25Speaker 3: getting in even the fourth outfielder. So first base is
- 1:29Speaker 3: a position that, like you said, it's not even really
- 1:32Speaker 3: if he doesn't do well, they can cut him and
- 1:34Speaker 3: it's they're not on the hook for anything.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Right. But in ty France this morning, Uh so I
- 1:41Speaker 2: think they're you're planning to play him on your left field.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think he's gonna see a lot.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Of d H.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So I agree. I mean, uh, Tatis, you know, plays
- 1:49Speaker 2: plays a lot. So it's not like he's going to
- 1:51Speaker 2: be needing right field. You know, maybe once every few
- 1:54Speaker 2: weeks something like that. But I think the big thing
- 1:56Speaker 2: would be more DH than anything else.
- 2:01Speaker 5: That makes sense, Bob. On this team, they need a
- 2:04Speaker 5: first basement, right, they need a first basement. The outfield
- 2:06Speaker 5: stack DH can be covered with sheets or whoever they
- 2:09Speaker 5: want to use it for. I like this move for
- 2:12Speaker 5: the Padres. It's a no lose situation. If he stinks
- 2:15Speaker 5: they're like eh, you can always release them and have
- 2:18Speaker 5: them move on and try something else.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:20Speaker 5: So I mean, listen, I know this as somebody that's
- 2:23Speaker 5: had things said about me in the past. When you
- 2:25Speaker 5: go to a new team, you go and you say, Okay,
- 2:28Speaker 5: what did people say about me?
- 2:29Speaker 6: Okay, well maybe.
- 2:30Speaker 5: This is whatever, And you look yourself in the mirror
- 2:32Speaker 5: and say, maybe this is true, maybe it's not. But
- 2:34Speaker 5: then you go and at least for one year that
- 2:37Speaker 5: Castian is gonna be on his best behavior. I would think,
- 2:39Speaker 5: not that he's a bad guy anyways. He just says
- 2:41Speaker 5: what he means. He's honest with people, and people don't
- 2:44Speaker 5: like honesty. Bob, trust me, I know that right. He's honest.
- 2:47Speaker 5: He tells people where they stand, he tells people what
- 2:49Speaker 5: they think. And everybody in today's game world, however you
- 2:53Speaker 5: want to put it, wants to be told you're the best,
- 2:55Speaker 5: you're the best. Nobody wants to hear that, hey, you
- 2:56Speaker 5: know what, you're not very.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Good at that. Work on it. And so I like this.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I think it stirs up the clubhouse a little bit,
- 3:02Speaker 5: especially if Manny's on board, because one of the things
- 3:04Speaker 5: that you know, and I know from being around San
- 3:05Speaker 5: Diego a little bit, is you need Manny on board
- 3:08Speaker 5: to make things work with the Padres.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's certainly his clubhouse. You know, he's got me
- 3:13Speaker 2: on bored. You know, we all know about the Soto
- 3:17Speaker 2: things with him and Manning and to tease that sort
- 3:19Speaker 2: of thing. But yeah, I think Manning's excited to he's
- 3:22Speaker 2: excited and uh, you know, look we didn't hear an
- 3:25Speaker 2: these things going on in Philadelphia. Have things with that
- 3:27Speaker 2: bad and with the Phillies they could trade him or
- 3:30Speaker 2: release them during the season, so you know, things kind
- 3:33Speaker 2: of got blown up. I think, you know, big time
- 3:37Speaker 2: once he left. I mean, how many times we hear
- 3:40Speaker 2: that when when players leave and managers get fired, we
- 3:43Speaker 2: hear things. You know, it should have been said at
- 3:45Speaker 2: the time, you know, not now when he's gone.
- 3:48Speaker 3: One of the things people need to understand is then
- 3:50Speaker 3: Nick got to choose this. Nick didn't get placed on
- 3:52Speaker 3: the Padres or the Padres didn't offer more money. I
- 3:56Speaker 3: think people really understand that part of it was this
- 3:59Speaker 3: Nick's best option of a team that was good. Have
- 4:02Speaker 3: you heard or talk to Nick or talk to anybody else,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and the other options that he had.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He said he talked to a couple of other teams there.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I can't say what it was, but I think that
- 4:11Speaker 2: Pottery's was so aggressive. I an Aj Probler yesterday said
- 4:15Speaker 2: that he was talking with Dave Dobrowski and says November
- 4:18Speaker 2: just never lined up on a trade. And I think
- 4:21Speaker 2: the thing was, I'm sure he thought, you know what,
- 4:23Speaker 2: we know he's not going back to Philadelphia. Well, summone
- 4:26Speaker 2: trade for him. We're gonna gamble that gets released, got released,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and eight pounced on it. You know, he was released
- 4:32Speaker 2: on Thursday. They were in a conference call, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: Friday morning, and then you know, boom playing right out
- 4:37Speaker 2: uh to Arizona. So I think it, you know, I
- 4:40Speaker 2: think it was a natural fit. You know, probably from
- 4:42Speaker 2: last month or two.
- 4:46Speaker 1: All right, Bob, when you first joined, we were going
- 4:48Speaker 1: to ask you about Zach Gallen and then we.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Couldn't hear you.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So we'll ask you again about Zach Gallen. You know,
- 4:55Speaker 1: every off season we talked about this. At least one
- 4:58Speaker 1: free agent who rejects a qualifying offer can can get a.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Little bit burned. But what did you make of Zach.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Gallen returning to the Diamondbacks. You know, AJ and Eric
- 5:07Speaker 1: talked a lot about how it's a comfortable place for
- 5:12Speaker 1: him to be. He knows the staff, everybody knows him.
- 5:15Speaker 1: It's easier to make adjustments there. What's your take on
- 5:18Speaker 1: that situation?
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, agree, she was the only one person against burn
- 5:22Speaker 2: every year, and he's he was a guy, uh you
- 5:25Speaker 2: know in Arizona. Finally say you know what, here's the deadline. Well,
- 5:28Speaker 2: we want you to sign by the weekend or forget
- 5:31Speaker 2: about it. We're not you know, we're extending money for you. So,
- 5:34Speaker 2: you know, fourteen million dollars was deferred. Obviously, would have
- 5:37Speaker 2: been better off just taking the uh, you know, the
- 5:40Speaker 2: qualifying offer from the get go. He thought he'd get
- 5:42Speaker 2: a you know, long term contract. You know, so did
- 5:45Speaker 2: the agent, Scott Borris. You know, I did too, and uh,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, some teams came, you know, kind of low
- 5:51Speaker 2: ball and multi year offers, but not at twenty two
- 5:54Speaker 2: a year. So you better himself, you know. He said,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know what, I'm going to hit the market again.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And I agree with the agent. He said, I think
- 6:00Speaker 2: he's gonna have a monster year, and I think he's
- 6:02Speaker 2: going to have a big time chip on his shoulder
- 6:04Speaker 2: and said, hey, you could have me, you could have me,
- 6:07Speaker 2: let me show what you're missing out on. Uh. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: he's a Philadelphia area and kid, and he pitches his
- 6:12Speaker 2: best when he's facing the big boys like the Yankees
- 6:15Speaker 2: and Mets things like that. So I think he's going
- 6:18Speaker 2: to have a spectacular here.
- 6:20Speaker 3: He was on our show and he actually had on
- 6:22Speaker 3: his phone a list of teams that he had a
- 6:24Speaker 3: little bit of a chip on his shoulder about. I
- 6:27Speaker 3: think that list probably has gone to about twenty eight.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I don't think he's mad at the Rockies that. I
- 6:33Speaker 3: think he's fine with how whatever happened with the Rockies?
- 6:36Speaker 6: Is this?
- 6:37Speaker 3: Is this because there's always one there's always one person
- 6:40Speaker 3: each year? Is this enough to get rid of the
- 6:43Speaker 3: qualifying offer because there's somebody like this? I get it
- 6:46Speaker 3: more than one could have this happen to him. But really,
- 6:50Speaker 3: I mean, Zach Allen's the one unfortunate. But do they
- 6:53Speaker 3: change entire qualifying offer because one of fifteen or fourteen
- 6:58Speaker 3: to seventeen guys however many got them each year, get
- 7:01Speaker 3: screwed because of the qualifying offer.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I think it's going to go away. Remember now, in
- 7:07Speaker 2: the last cbamus League Baseball said we'll get with the
- 7:10Speaker 2: qualifying offer if we can have an international draft, and
- 7:14Speaker 2: that was debated back and forth with the Union and
- 7:16Speaker 2: everything else, and the side the international draft was more important.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Several agents were upsets. Oh my god, it's going to
- 7:23Speaker 2: hurt free agency. And sure enough. I mean watch all
- 7:26Speaker 2: the offers that will pour in for Gallon next year,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, just like you know, brag me these guys
- 7:31Speaker 2: that had those qualifying offers and had to take the
- 7:33Speaker 2: opt outs. So no, I do believe it's going to
- 7:36Speaker 2: go away. It's just too big a restriction on players.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And there's so many teams. I mean, Atlanta they really
- 7:43Speaker 2: badly need them, but they had the twenty fourth pick
- 7:45Speaker 2: in the draft and they weren't going to forfeit that
- 7:48Speaker 2: trade or not porfit, but give up that draft pick
- 7:51Speaker 2: for anybody, whether it was Dylan Cees, Framer Bell Deads
- 7:54Speaker 2: or anybody. That's how important those drapt picks are.
- 7:58Speaker 3: All right, we got the warby Parkers, I got the Raiders,
- 8:02Speaker 3: but one thing that upgraded to polarized, sorry about it.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Yeah, these are good not only for wearing but also
- 8:10Speaker 4: out in the sun when I become that baseball coach,
- 8:12Speaker 4: I always want to be with my kids. I got
- 8:14Speaker 4: the Hatchers. They're darker, little bit wider for my face.
- 8:17Speaker 4: They fit perfect, They're comfortable. It's an easy process to
- 8:21Speaker 4: order these really really cool glasses.
- 8:23Speaker 7: I am a diehard Warby Parker fan. I do have
- 8:27Speaker 7: prescription glasses and I wear Warby Parker every day for
- 8:30Speaker 7: many years. I'm excited about this one. Give it a shot.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Warby Parker gives you quality and better looking prescription I
- 8:36Speaker 7: wear at a fraction of the going price. Our listeners
- 8:38Speaker 7: get fifteen percent off plus free shipping when they buy
- 8:41Speaker 7: two or more pairs of prescription glasses at Warbyparker dot
- 8:44Speaker 7: com slash foul. That's fifteen percent off when you buy
- 8:47Speaker 7: two pairs of glasses at wa Rby Parker dot com

- 8:57Speaker 7: them Foul Territory sent you.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Bob mentioned that in the last CBA it was discussed,
- 9:02Speaker 5: and I remember they changed some of the things about
- 9:04Speaker 5: you can't get more than one, and if you're traded,
- 9:06Speaker 5: you can't have a qualifying offer, and there was a
- 9:08Speaker 5: lot of things that they kind of made tweaks to
- 9:10Speaker 5: in the last CBA. Well, the CBA, as we all know,
- 9:12Speaker 5: is up in December. What is something that the owners
- 9:16Speaker 5: would need to get that power back to. I mean,
- 9:20Speaker 5: I know the World Draft, but I just don't know
- 9:22Speaker 5: that that's ever going to be a thing because of
- 9:25Speaker 5: the way the Latin American countries are scouted and guys
- 9:27Speaker 5: are signed Japanese guys. But is there something else the
- 9:30Speaker 5: players could say, Hey, we hate this qualifying offer, we'll
- 9:33Speaker 5: give you besides a salary cap obviously.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I mean, I think international draft that won't is that
- 9:40Speaker 2: big to players. I mean, you know, we know a
- 9:42Speaker 2: lot of players that get upset when setting guys over
- 9:45Speaker 2: from you know, Cuba and different things like that and
- 9:48Speaker 2: don't work out, and things like, hey, if you were
- 9:51Speaker 2: born to raise this country, you know you're going to
- 9:53Speaker 2: get a maximum signing bonus and a draft where if
- 9:57Speaker 2: you come from a foreign country there's no limit when
- 9:59Speaker 2: they give you. So I think they'll give that up.
- 10:02Speaker 2: They really do, and I think that's all it takes.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I don't think that's that big of a give for
- 10:08Speaker 2: the Players Association to say, Okay, you can have international draft.
- 10:12Speaker 2: We don't want that qualifying offer. We don't want restrictions
- 10:15Speaker 2: on free agency ever. Again, I think just too big
- 10:18Speaker 2: of a burden. And I think of all the guys
- 10:20Speaker 2: who you know, and the qualifying offer attached to him,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I think it definitely hurt Gallon by far the most,
- 10:26Speaker 2: and nobody else that really came up, but with him,
- 10:29Speaker 2: that's all you're heard from everybody was I don't want
- 10:32Speaker 2: to give up those raph picks.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I want to circle back to the Padres real quick
- 10:36Speaker 3: and hit aj Preller aj Prellys comments from you know,
- 10:40Speaker 3: from Manny Machado about a J Pereller. Nobody can deny
- 10:44Speaker 3: that a J Peller wants to win. Is this season
- 10:48Speaker 3: or the coming seasons of the extension and everything all
- 10:51Speaker 3: that stuff for him happens. Is this his fault if
- 10:56Speaker 3: they lose ultimately some players, but is it his fault
- 10:59Speaker 3: if they win? Also because of what's been written about
- 11:02Speaker 3: him about how he butts heads, He's been through a
- 11:04Speaker 3: lot of managers and they haven't gotten to the place
- 11:07Speaker 3: where this roster should be, which is a world series.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean not too many gms. I'm not sure
- 11:15Speaker 2: I can think of when that survived that many manager changes. Well,
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think he's fourth or fifth manager. That usually doesn't happen.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Usually get two and that's it. They've been knocking the door. Obviously,
- 11:26Speaker 2: they sell out most of the games, so financially they're doing
- 11:29Speaker 2: well at the gate. You know, it's not his fault.
- 11:31Speaker 2: The TV money kind of went away in San Diego.
- 11:34Speaker 2: They should have knocked off the Dodgers two years ago,
- 11:37Speaker 2: up two games a one in the best of five series.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Dodgers in a bullfing game, no Freddie Freeman and blow
- 11:44Speaker 2: him out. And then of course one game five, two zero,
- 11:47Speaker 2: even though you darbage pitch so well. So they're knocking
- 11:50Speaker 2: the door. They're in the playoffs. They spend a lot
- 11:54Speaker 2: of money. I mean when Peter Salder was alive, it
- 11:56Speaker 2: was almost like the George Darmer days. Get whoever you want.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I mean, the only reason they got Xander Bogart so
- 12:02Speaker 2: he got two hundred million dollars is good. They were
- 12:05Speaker 2: offering over three hundred and fifty million dollars for Trade Turner,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and they were going to go over four hundred million
- 12:10Speaker 2: even more for Aaron Judge, but he want to go
- 12:13Speaker 2: back to the Yankees. So they spend amount of money.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You know, now they're kind of, you know, up against it.
- 12:18Speaker 2: So I think a year from now will be very
- 12:20Speaker 2: be fascinating to see what big contract has to go.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And the one guy here he talks about Strtis because
- 12:28Speaker 2: his contract is certainly tradable.
- 12:31Speaker 1: All right, bob Let's transition to the Twins a little bit.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We've heard a lot about this Byron Buxton thing, how
- 12:36Speaker 1: he was upset, you know, with the Twins for basically
- 12:40Speaker 1: not declaring their loyalty to him, because he felt that
- 12:44Speaker 1: he did that for them, you know, when he told
- 12:47Speaker 1: the media in the off season and during the season
- 12:51Speaker 1: last year that he wasn't going anywhere. He was a
- 12:54Speaker 1: little upset that the Twins didn't come out and say, yeah,
- 12:56Speaker 1: we want him to stay here, like blatantly. Right, They
- 13:00Speaker 1: said that they were hoping he would. But in my mind,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm thinking, isn't that understandable that the Twins didn't come
- 13:06Speaker 1: out and say that, because you know, everybody is on
- 13:09Speaker 1: the table and they'll listen to offers from other teams.
- 13:12Speaker 1: What was your take on that?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, nowadays it seems like, you know, players
- 13:17Speaker 2: are more sensitive to that sort of thing. I mean,
- 13:19Speaker 2: they had apologized to get tell Martine Arizona for listening
- 13:22Speaker 2: to offers. But Buckston had a you know, no trade class.
- 13:26Speaker 2: He was just upset to the Twins and say, hey,
- 13:28Speaker 2: you know we're not moving you under any reason. Uh,
- 13:32Speaker 2: no circumstance will change that. So he was upset by that.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And there were teams that were telling him, hey, hey,
- 13:39Speaker 2: waiter trade class to Dodgers waider trade class. Here, we'll
- 13:42Speaker 2: take you in a hurry. But those Minnesota you should
- 13:45Speaker 2: you should get rewarded for that. But I remember when
- 13:47Speaker 2: Kevin Towers was a GM, the San Diego potter Is,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and he would tell teams, hey, you want to make
- 13:52Speaker 2: an offer for Tony Gwym, You want to make an
- 13:54Speaker 2: offer for Trevor Hoffin, go ahead. You know, I don't
- 13:57Speaker 2: think there's any way up. We'll move them. But sudden
- 13:59Speaker 2: blows away, well sure, think about it. So a lot
- 14:02Speaker 2: of jams will say, you know what, we'll listen to everybody.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And maybe that's what the Twins were thinking too. Okay,
- 14:08Speaker 2: if somebody blows his away from Buckston, let's see if
- 14:10Speaker 2: he wants to leave.
- 14:12Speaker 5: But Bob, why does it matter. He's Byron bucks He
- 14:14Speaker 5: has a no trade clause. Who cares if they say
- 14:17Speaker 5: they're like get like, I don't understand why we're mad.
- 14:19Speaker 5: Like Byron Buckson is a great player, but why are
- 14:22Speaker 5: we you have a full no trade. Guess what, Byron?
- 14:25Speaker 5: If you don't ever wave it, you're a twin for life.
- 14:27Speaker 5: So why does the team have to come out and
- 14:29Speaker 5: say we're not gonna trade him before they even trade you.
- 14:33Speaker 5: They'll have to do what they had to do to
- 14:34Speaker 5: Nolan Arnado. Hey, Nolan, will you go here?
- 14:37Speaker 6: No? I don't want to go there? Okay, will you
- 14:39Speaker 6: go here?
- 14:40Speaker 2: No?
- 14:40Speaker 6: I don't. I'm gonna stay here in Minnesota.
- 14:42Speaker 5: And he has that right until the end of time
- 14:44Speaker 5: unless they release him and eat the money, which the
- 14:46Speaker 5: way the Twins are going, they need to save every penny, Bob,
- 14:48Speaker 5: So tell your son not to like get a pretzel
- 14:50Speaker 5: at the concession stand or anything, because they might charge
- 14:53Speaker 5: him double. Okay, but you see what I'm saying, Like
- 14:56Speaker 5: he has the like I don't understand why this is
- 14:58Speaker 5: a thing, Like, oh, they didn't say to me that
- 15:00Speaker 5: I'm not getting traded Byen you have the power you
- 15:03Speaker 5: don't have.
- 15:04Speaker 6: You'll never be traded if you don't want to be traded.
- 15:06Speaker 5: You can sit right there in Minnesota, fish out on
- 15:08Speaker 5: Minnetonka right, go to Maynards, go to wherever you want
- 15:12Speaker 5: in Minneapolis and have a great time, and you can
- 15:14Speaker 5: be a twin for life.
- 15:15Speaker 6: Buddy.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I think players now just want that kind of support.
- 15:20Speaker 2: They want the Twins, like you said, even though he
- 15:21Speaker 2: has a bower. They want the Twins to come out
- 15:24Speaker 2: and say, oh, there's no way in the world will
- 15:26Speaker 2: ever trade you. We love you. Then you just players
- 15:28Speaker 2: like you want that. I look at Philadelphia, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 2: when Date Dobrowski, you know, talked about Bryce Harper helpfully
- 15:34Speaker 2: become an elite player again. I think it was a
- 15:37Speaker 2: big deal. Sort of that kind of stuff went on forever,
- 15:39Speaker 2: but obviously it bothered Harper and he still talked about
- 15:42Speaker 2: it extensively yesterday. So I just think it's a different,
- 15:45Speaker 2: you know, time and life for players. You know, so
- 15:49Speaker 2: a lot different from when you know you played AJ
- 15:52Speaker 2: and Eric too, nobody worried about those things, but now
- 15:55Speaker 2: I think just everybody's very sensitive.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Let's take both of those stories, and I want your
- 16:02Speaker 3: resolution of both of those stories. Buxton saying what he said,
- 16:06Speaker 3: and I agree with AJ. It's kind of like whatever,
- 16:09Speaker 3: like it's totally fine, you have all the power. And
- 16:11Speaker 3: Bryce Harper being called not elite? Is this the first
- 16:16Speaker 3: stepping stone to maybe a time when Byron Buxton changes
- 16:21Speaker 3: his mind and says, you know what, I'll play after
- 16:24Speaker 3: this season he has two more years, I'll go play
- 16:26Speaker 3: somewhere that wants to win. And is there something that
- 16:29Speaker 3: could possibly come of the Bryce Harper you know rift
- 16:33Speaker 3: or tiff that's going on?
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know Harper still remember you want
- 16:39Speaker 2: extension years ago and they said, come on, you said
- 16:41Speaker 2: that contract, you didn't want the opt out clause, so
- 16:44Speaker 2: nothing really came about it. I still don't think Harper
- 16:47Speaker 2: leaving there. I still think he's the you know, face
- 16:50Speaker 2: of the franchise obviously, you know, with Kyle Schwarber so
- 16:53Speaker 2: beloved there, and I think he likes playing Philadelphia too.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He loves that intensity. Nember when both of them were
- 16:59Speaker 2: free agent, it's called Harper Machado. I think worked out perfectly.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I think Harper would have been bored on his mind and
- 17:04Speaker 2: seeing Diego, and I'm not sure Manchada would have loved
- 17:07Speaker 2: playing in Philadelphia. So worked out great. Busting in our hand,
- 17:12Speaker 2: you know, all you got to do is look at
- 17:13Speaker 2: both you know Texas and met straight Brandon Nemo had
- 17:16Speaker 2: a no trade class too. Obviously something sent him off
- 17:19Speaker 2: where he say, you know what, I want to go.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Samon didn't have no trade cost those two places, but
- 17:25Speaker 2: he was probably willing to go to New York. So
- 17:28Speaker 2: it could be a case here too where if he's
- 17:30Speaker 2: a little discreunted, he can say, you know what, I'm
- 17:32Speaker 2: from Atlanta. If Atlanta wants me, I love, I love
- 17:37Speaker 2: to go there. You know, keep it quiet, but that
- 17:39Speaker 2: we leave. I mean colech Gray had no trade class too.
- 17:43Speaker 2: It wasn't until Houston came out and say wait a minute, now, uh,
- 17:46Speaker 2: you know what's going to happen here he was even
- 17:49Speaker 2: thinking about leaving at all. And when they present it
- 17:51Speaker 2: to him, he jumped at the opportunity.
- 17:57Speaker 1: All right, Bob, let's talk about where you're at right now.
- 18:00Speaker 1: You're obviously at the Angels camp. And we've heard a
- 18:02Speaker 1: lot about Mike Trout in the news a lot recently,
- 18:05Speaker 1: whether it's talking about center Field, whether it's talking about
- 18:08Speaker 1: the WBC. What's the latest with Mike Trout that you're
- 18:11Speaker 1: hearing from Angels Camp.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Well, he met with the Perrymanesium in the GM and
- 18:16Speaker 2: also with the versus Zuk and the new manager, and said,
- 18:20Speaker 2: I want to go back to centerfield, and they said, okay,
- 18:23Speaker 2: let's work that out. So he plans to play center
- 18:26Speaker 2: field now for four or five days a week. He
- 18:29Speaker 2: was bored as a DH. They said he was taking
- 18:32Speaker 2: thousands of swings during the game. He hated being in
- 18:34Speaker 2: DH and he had the worst year of his career.
- 18:37Speaker 2: His best year was twenty twenty two when he played
- 18:40Speaker 2: centerfield for about her and twenty games. So did that's
- 18:43Speaker 2: try it? He feels healthy, so he's going to be
- 18:45Speaker 2: back in center field WBC. He says he badly wanted
- 18:49Speaker 2: to do it, but the insurance was a hang up.
- 18:53Speaker 2: He's very disappointed. He loved being there in twenty twenty three.
- 18:57Speaker 2: He kind of feels takes pride that so many guys
- 18:59Speaker 2: want to do it now because they had so much
- 19:01Speaker 2: fun in twenty twenty three. But you know, insurance reasons.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Insurance reasons stopped it, and he wasn't going to be
- 19:07Speaker 2: you know, the every day you know outfield anyway with
- 19:10Speaker 2: that as loaded as that team is. But he's certainly
- 19:12Speaker 2: wanted to be.
- 19:13Speaker 5: On it, Bob, How could can the Angels be? I mean,
- 19:17Speaker 5: they're they're they're kind of in a tough spot right
- 19:19Speaker 5: with the Astros, the Mariners, the Rangers are supposed to
- 19:23Speaker 5: be should be better this year.
- 19:25Speaker 6: What what?
- 19:26Speaker 5: What can the Angels be in this division? I know
- 19:28Speaker 5: they've tried to make some move, some of their young
- 19:30Speaker 5: guys have gotten to take another year, another step, But
- 19:33Speaker 5: can the Angels actually compete this year in that Al
- 19:37Speaker 5: West which is getting has been good and continues to
- 19:40Speaker 5: get better.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I think it moved closer to five hundred. I don't
- 19:44Speaker 2: think they can contempt a division. They're still parrolls still
- 19:47Speaker 2: pretty low. You know, they got Rhythm and Dome contract,
- 19:50Speaker 2: but it's not like they spent that money. You know,
- 19:52Speaker 2: Redomet contract has now deferred. But I think their pared
- 19:55Speaker 2: roll is only about one hundred forty eight million dollars,
- 19:58Speaker 2: so well before the luxury tax threshold. So I just
- 20:02Speaker 2: don't think they want to spend money yet because you
- 20:04Speaker 2: don't think they're ready to contend. So I think they're
- 20:07Speaker 2: making some slow progress things like that, but I just
- 20:10Speaker 2: can't see them being a true contender, and you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: and challenging Seattle marriage or Houston Astros, or even Texas
- 20:16Speaker 2: for that matter.
- 20:25Speaker 1: All right, take a look at the bet MGM futures

- 20:48Speaker 1: If you have a gambling problem or concern, call one
- 20:50Speaker 1: hundred gambler. Take a look at that. All right, guys,
- 20:54Speaker 1: give me your take on the Manager of the Year odds.
- 20:57Speaker 1: You got Dan Wilson, John Schneider, Stephen Ute, Craig Albernas.
- 21:01Speaker 2: What do you think aj?
- 21:03Speaker 6: Where's Will Venable on that list?
- 21:07Speaker 5: Kevin Cash, Patricia But I think Albernas to me is
- 21:12Speaker 5: the one on this list. It makes sense just because
- 21:14Speaker 5: he's going to a team that's supposed to be super talented,
- 21:16Speaker 5: right they've kind of underachieved last year. If he gets
- 21:18Speaker 5: them to the postseason, he'll get some votes. Hinch is
- 21:21Speaker 5: supposed to win votes won two years in a row.
- 21:23Speaker 5: They're not going to give him the repeat. I don't
- 21:25Speaker 5: think Dan Wilson, John Schneider. They both have good teams,
- 21:28Speaker 5: so they're expected to win. I think Albernas on this
- 21:31Speaker 5: list is the one that really stands out at plus seven.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Hundred yep one hundred percent and I was boring, but
- 21:38Speaker 3: that's the one voter's not gonna win three years in
- 21:40Speaker 3: a row, whether they do good or not. I think
- 21:42Speaker 3: Craig Albernas has a playoff team. If he gets him there,
- 21:46Speaker 3: the voters will vote for him.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Isn't ironic that they're together, they're the same odds and
- 21:54Speaker 5: they're like best of friends.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Isn't that funny? It's funny. I think they have a
- 21:59Speaker 6: side at where they're like who wins me or you
