- 0:07On December 14th, 1975, the Miami Dolphins faced the Baltimore Colts at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore during week 13 of the 1975 NFL season.
- 0:17In this AFC East matchup, the first-place Dolphins, led by veteran head coach Don Shula, faced off against the second-place Colts, led by Ted Marchabroda, in his first year as a coach.
- 0:28This is the local Baltimore radio broadcast featuring announcers Chuck Thompson and Vince Bagley.
- 0:58The broadcast of the descriptions and accounts of this game, without the express written permission of the Dolphins, the Colts, and the National Football League is prohibited.
- 1:07And a titanic battle expected today. A win by the Baltimore Colts, the big surprise of the NFL this season, brings them into a tie with the Miami Dolphins for first place in the American Football Conference Eastern Division.
- 1:22They also need as a victory next week to cop the title. Let's go join Chuck Thompson at Memorial Stadium.
- 1:42Well, at the moment we are having technical difficulties. Hopefully they will be straightened out in a moment or so. And they are now. Let's go join Chuck Thompson.
- 1:52...the evaluation of the Baltimore Colts. Well, they are for real. They are doing a great job. Their defenses have come on strong, especially their front four. They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Offensively, Bert Jones, he is backed up by Marty Dommery. Lydell Mitchell, their offensive line is a fine offensive line. They have got good receivers. Marchabroda has done a great job with this football team. They won seven in a row.
- 2:13And for your Miami Dolphins, what is the key to winning this crucial game? Well, not to make the mistakes that we made against them in that game down there. We had a 14-0 lead and then we made a lot of offensive errors. And then in the second half they did a good job of controlling the ball against us. They won against us up front. We can't let that happen again.
- 2:30And now Coach Ted Marchabroda, briefly, your evaluation of this Miami Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins, Dave, are a very strong football club. They have no weaknesses whatsoever. They can beat you in so many ways, offensively, defensively, special teams. And it's going to take a total team effort for us to be able to beat them.
- 2:49How do you plan to beat the Dolphins this afternoon? Well, I think really that's about it. For us to win, we have to play a good football game. But I think the most important factor about it, though, Dave, is that it's in our hands if we can win by playing good football. We don't need a superhuman effort.
- 3:07Thanks, Ted Marchabroda and Don Schulte. This is Dave Humphrey with the coaches. Now back to Chuck Thompson in the booth. Thank you very much, Dave, and thank you, Coaches Schulte and Mark Chabroda. Vince Bagley with Chuck Thompson at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 3:20Along with our sizable cold network this afternoon, Vince, we're indeed very proud and privileged to be able to broadcast for the American Forces Network all around the world. Better than 300 stations will be hearing our broadcast this afternoon. We hope that the football game will be as good as all of them want it to be.
- 3:38Well, Chuck, we certainly share the sentiment, and in three hours we will have a verdict. And for the rest of the year, maybe until next cold season, people will be talking about it. But I can't remember. I have chills up and down my spine as I talk to you right now. I hope I settle down.
- 3:54Got it right this solid three-game meal, ready for just a great afternoon. All of the people are back. Bill Gattas is back, one of the great Coat Rooters who goes around and hoping everybody will give him a C and an O and a so forth. The big wheel, he's come on lately, but he's been a factor. He's in the upper deck and there's not an empty seat in the building.
- 4:15Vince, there are so many things to be said about the resurgence and the turn around of the Baltimore Colts of 1975. But I think we'd be remiss if we didn't say a little bit about the Baltimore Colts fans for years. This has been one of the better pro franchises in the history of the game. And then it kind of dwindled. It more or less kind of fell apart. You could say the wheels came off the cart.
- 4:36But today we may be sitting on the birth of a love affair. Baltimore has again fallen in love with their Baltimore Colts. And they're now being introduced. And if you want to hear some enthusiasm and hear why this park has been called an outdoor insane asylum, just listen.
- 4:59The Baltimore Colts, young, very, very well coach, have come of age. This is not a fluke football team. They did not accidentally put together seven games in a row victoriously. They did it by playing very good football. If there is one of the things that could hurt the Baltimore Colts today, perhaps as much as anything else, it would be the fact that as youngsters, perhaps they might be a little bit too high.
- 5:23That's right. Right now you have to concern yourself that they don't hurt each other. Right. As each grabs the introduced member as he comes to the side.
- 5:32You know, this is what I thought about Ben Spagley a moment ago, a solid professional broadcaster, feels exactly the way I do. It's been a few years since we've seen this happen in Baltimore. And the broadcaster who can sit up here and look at this and say he is not excited, he is not affected about it, shouldn't be sitting up here.
- 5:48I said if I have any adrenaline, it's flowing right now, Chuck, and I know you feel the same way.
- 5:53I certainly do. It's a, you know, a privileged broadcaster to work for a good football club, and this is a good football club. But how about fellows like Bagley and Thompson, and there are quite a few others in this fine city of Baltimore, who saw the Colts come on to world championships years ago and are sitting around hoping that perhaps it can happen again.
- 6:10Well, this year, 1975, the Colts are as close as they have been in many, many years. And now, ladies and gentlemen, in the city that gave birth to one of the great songs in the history of mankind, it is with a great deal of pride I call your attention to the singing and playing of our national anthem.
- 6:26Can't you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched,
- 6:55Were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- 7:18Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 7:48We'll be ready with the opening kickoff in just one minute.
- 7:53Well, if the Dolphins, as we said at the moment, holding a one-game lead in the AFC, are able to take this game, they will win their fifth straight division title.
- 8:02The Colts, meanwhile, are riding their seven-game winning streak. And as we have told you, would move into that first-place tie with a victory, but they will be eliminated from postseason play if they lose.
- 8:13Baltimore will be the division champion if these two teams are tied at the end of the season. The Dolphins meet the Broncos next week, and the Colts play the Patriots. Both teams are at home.
- 8:24The reason being that the Colts would win is since they would have defeated the Dolphins twice in head-to-head competition.
- 8:29Baltimore won the first game November 23rd, 33-17. At both quarterbacks, Miami's Bob Grazy and the Colts' Bert Jones left the game due to injuries, and backup Morney Domereys led Baltimore to the victory off the ground.
- 8:42Miami leads the overall series 8-4. Don Schrock, a third-string quarterback until Grazy and Earl Morrill were injured, led Miami to a victory over Buffalo last week 31-21, eliminating the Bills from the playoff spot and a possibility for postseason play.
- 8:57Like so many young people the world over, all they ask for is a chance. Well, the Baltimore Colts football team, a young football team, all they have asked for is a chance. Today they have that chance. If they win, they can go on. If they lose, their season is over. No team can ask for any more than that.
- 9:18Well, they certainly earned it, Chuck. They earned it beginning with a great stretch run beginning in New York. When they defeated the New York Jets, they won seven in a row since then. They won the toss in the 13th meeting between these two teams. They will receive. I thought maybe, Chuck. In this kind of a tense ball game, they give the ball up, first of all, to let Miami make a mistake. They settle themselves, but that gives them possession, and they don't want that.
- 9:42Exactly right. Yacremia will kick it off. Bruce Laird is down on the goal line waiting for Yacremia. He hits it pretty good. Laird up to the Baltimore. It's all up to five, and he's coming up now. It's a good game. Now 15, now 20. 25, on the speed 30, 35. Penalty flag down. Laird to McClair in midfield. And it's going to be pulled down to the Dolphins. 44-yard line, but a penalty flag way back upfield at the Baltimore Colts. 20-yard line. And when you see that, usually it indicates flipping on the return.
- 10:09And again, I guess that's the thing that you worry about. You worry about the emotion. Come out and hit somebody. They say as soon as you hit somebody, you're all right. Everybody feels better. The game has begun. But the blow has been delivered illegally back around the 21-yard line.
- 10:22And this will nullify a brilliant return by Bruce Laird, which had carried all the way to the 43 in Miami territory. And Baltimore will have to start from deep inside its own 15 at the 11th.
- 10:33And Colts fall first down at about their own 11-yard line. Clipping penalty against the Colts on the kickoff return. Laird, hurdles would be tacklers at the 30. Broke clear and was pulled down by Tim Foley at about the Miami 44.
- 10:46Baltimore Jones is starting at quarterback. He's got the sore ribs, all of you know, I'm sure. Baltimore comes out on an eye formation. Olds the front man. Lydell Mitchell, the deep man in the eye.
- 10:55Double flankers to the left side, Roger Carr and Glenn Dowdy. They stay in the eye. No. Now out of the eye in motion, back toward his backfield, Dowdy to give to the second man. Mitchell hit at the line of scrimmage for absolutely no gain.
- 11:05Moving in was Vern Den Herder, one of the two very capable defensive ends of the Miami Dolphins, to make the tackle and assisting on the play, the linebacker, Rhone.
- 11:14We notice the pluggers, which they call those linebackers, lined up just directly behind the down lineman. Now maybe that was just for that play, but it's tough to tell they can stunt really off the down lineman and make it difficult for your blocking assignment.
- 11:26Let's see if they stack that way this time. Against the Bills, the Dolphins use a three-man set, a four-man set, and a five-man set defensively. In motion through the backfield of the far sideline, Glenn Dowdy.
- 11:36High formation behind quarterback Jones, rolling out to his left, running with the ball. Jones is coming up to the 15 and going out of bounds. Bert Jones, I'm not sure what to play with design that way, but he had just turned and rolled to the left and came up to about the 15-yard line.
- 11:50And the Colts are coming up to one of those big third downers.
- 11:53He came off the weak side. I kind of think it was designed, Chuck, and yet they don't want Bert running around out there. He was running for the sideline. And the blocker upfield, Dowdy, I guess, the wide man, delivered a block as if he knew what he was doing from the outset of the play.
- 12:08So I think they had it figured out that way.
- 12:10Perhaps they were just advertising a little bit. Miami don't go to sleep, this is a concealed run. Third down five, Baltimore at their own 14. Standard throw setback field, no man directly behind the quarterback. Dowdy wide right, far wide left.
- 12:21Take away by Jones. Hand off to Olds. Olds straight ahead up over the 15 to about the 16-yard line.
- 12:26And he is mothered there by a good defensive effort and a part of, again, the defensive end and herder and also helping out the play with Randy Crowder, the defensive tackle.
- 12:35So we come up to a kicking situation, fourth down. And the ball at the 17 will make it fourth down in about three or just a short two, if you will.
- 12:43Downfield waiting to get the return is Matt Moore. He's a solo safety. The Dolphins against David Lee, the Baltimore Hunter, now present a 10-man thrust.
- 12:53The lone safety, Matt Moore, is about the Dolphin 48 or Miami 48 or 49-yard line. Waiting for the snap. They're going to get a rush. The snap, good. Here comes the rush. It's picked up nicely.
- 13:02Lee gets the punt out of there. Here comes Moore up to midfield, makes the catch at 50. Ladder long into the near sideline, gets the track back block and down he goes at about the Baltimore 47-yard line.
- 13:13It looked like Bob Pratt made the tackle on Matt Moore. David Lee had to hurry his kick because booming in there very quickly was Ernie Rhone.
- 13:21And Rhone was picked up at the last moment, Vince, or he might have blocked the lead punt.
- 13:24Yes, indeed he was. He had good penetration and picked up by Stan Weiss and taken out just at the last moment.
- 13:33Well, if there's something that Baltimore has to really, reasonably be very, very proud of, it's their defensive unit and they're now on field against the Miami Dolphins.
- 13:40Don Strock quarterbacking. Mercury-Mars one setback. In motion back through the backfield goes Solomon to the far sideline.
- 13:47Nottingham the other setback, a fake and now a pass out here to Matt Moore in the flat. Moore down to the Baltimore 42-yard line before he is taken out of bounds.
- 13:54A very quick out pass. And this is what we expect Don Strock to do all day long. A very quick release, shallow drop passes, quick outs.
- 14:01He threw two touchdown passes against Buffalo last week, one for eight yards and the other for one.
- 14:06That's got six yards. It was a good play. It had the strength going away from the play where the ball was ultimately thrown and almost isolated Moore against the cold defender.
- 14:16It's a cornerback. Second down three at the Baltimore 41 and that quick out. Twilly is wide to the left side. Matt Moore splits off on the right side.
- 14:23Here comes Twilly in motion through the Dolphin backfield of the near sideline. Strock yanks it away, fake hands off to Morris. Morris swinging around his own left end.
- 14:30Waiting to get a block, ducks outside it, cuts down the far sideline and it goes out of bounds around Baltimore's 37-yard line.
- 14:36A pretty good sweep by Mercury-Mars. Stan White rode him out of bounds and the fellow who was steering him around the corner is one of the best I've seen in some time.
- 14:43A man by the name of Little and that's the only small thing about him isn't it? Exactly. And Mercury had his hand on Little's belt.
- 14:49You take me where you want me and I'll follow you. He did a good job.
- 14:53They're very close to first down yardage. The ball is spotted between the Baltimore 38 and 37 and they're going to take the stick from the near side to the far side and measure any part of the ball and he's got that first down.
- 15:05I don't know whether he picked it up or not. It's awfully close. They say no, he didn't get it. So the Dolphins show third down in inches now. The ball resting at the Colts. Jump inside the Colts 38.
- 15:18Pat Haggard is the referee this afternoon. Al Conroy, the umpire, headlines involve Peters. Bob Beeks is the line judge. The back judge is Jim Poole and Pat Malek is the field judge.
- 15:30And for those of you listening in all around the world this afternoon, the Baltimore Colts have sold more tickets to this football game than any other football game in their history in Baltimore.
- 15:38310 above capacity. 60,548 are here. Miami with an eye formation. And the deep man in the eye is Mercury Morris. It looks like Nottingham, the front man in the eye.
- 15:50And Matt Moore in motion through the backfield of this near side line. The takeaway by Strzok gives the second man Morris into the Holy Ghost. The first down yardage to about the Baltimore 35 yard line before Fred Cook was able to pin him.
- 16:01This is this afternoon's event. There are many factors that will eventually figure into the outcome of this ball game. But I think one of the most important features of the game will be the Miami offensive line against the Baltimore defensive line.
- 16:13Absolutely. Miami has been given good field position by the, actually the holding the clipping penalty and then the fact that Miami dug in and held them. But here they are digging at the 35 yard line.
- 16:24And again an eye formation fully wide to the right of it. A front man in the eye, Nottingham, deep man Merck Morris, Don Strzok quarterbacking. He rolls back, fakes, wants to throw, flips, coming in, gets rid of his pass and is hit while doing so.
- 16:34And it's intercepted by Lloyd Brumford of the Baltimore Colts from the end zone. Brumford intercepted what was intended for Kurt.
- 16:49The Baltimore Colts defensive unit has a half of any time to stop the Dolphins again on a Brumford interception. There's a break in the action. Let's pause now for this message.
- 16:59Well this is the biggest game of the day but there are others going on. And after one period of play no score between San Francisco and Atlanta. However in the second period Nick McEmyer, 22 yard field goal and the thousands now lead to 49ers 3-0.
- 17:13In the first period Greg Pruitt ran 11 yards for a touchdown. Don Cockroft the extra point to put Cleveland on top of Kansas City after 1-7 to nothing. And in the second period Don Cockroft kicked a 27 yard field goal. It's 10-0 now. The Browns leading the Chiefs.
- 17:29After one period of play no details. New Orleans leading the Giants by a score of 7-0. Also underway but nothing to report on as yet. Buffalo and New England. Later on St. Louis that's Chicago. Green Bay will be at Los Angeles. Houston at Oakland. The Detroit Lions will entertain the Minnesota Vikings.
- 17:46And the Philadelphia Eagles will travel to Denver to do battle with the Broncos. But right now the big defensive play is the Colts have done it so long or so many times all year long that interception by Lloyd Mumford they now have it first and 10 on their own 20.
- 18:01Well this afternoon's 12 Dolphins game has a much bigger audience than the Baltimore Colts radio network. Joining us this afternoon is the American Forces radio network. 300 stations around the world. Our broadcast today goes to all of Europe, to Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Japan and the Far East. Welcome to all of the stations of the American Forces network.
- 18:22First down Baltimore, Baltimore 20. Split backfield no man directly behind Burt Jones the quarterback. Double flankers wide left Jones gives to Mitchell. Mitchell hits the right side and is able to get through for a couple of very short yards. Maybe two, perhaps three before he is snuffed out.
- 18:36By it looked like Ernie Roan the linebacker on that side so Mitchell's thrust to the right side carries for three. Second down and seven. The interception brought together two old teammates Howard Trilley who was a teammate of Lloyd Mumford of course when both were at Miami.
- 18:50That incidentally was Lloyd's fourth interception of the year. Second down seven at the 23. Double flank wide left Dowdy and Carr. Eye formation old front man Lydell Mitchell the second man of the eye.
- 19:04The Bremen Chester tight end on the right end through the backfield of motion to the other side goes Glenn Dowdy the pitch back to Mitchell with sweep of his right end makes the cut up to the 25. Hit and held shy of that 25 yard line. As the quick acting and good defensive unit of the ball the Miami Dolphins shut Lydell Mitchell off.
- 19:20Leading the tacklers with number 49 Charlie Babb and they spot the football at about the 25 which means it's a third down and five and Don McCauley comes in to the Baltimore backfield. Coming out is Bill Old.
- 19:33The only not suited up and able to play today is a very valuable member of the offensive unit Roosevelt Leakes. Now Jones has a third down five at his own 25 with Carr wide right. Dowdy wide left.
- 19:46The flip backfield nobody behind the quarterback Jones he's going to go back to throw a great drop set looks fired up the middle. Right away you look back to see if Jones is on his feet and he is and again of 11 gives him a first down at the 36.
- 20:03Good grab by Raymond and a little traffic. Well the first first down of the afternoon for the Baltimore Colts no score in case you just tuned in that we've got better than 10 minutes remaining elsewhere Buffalo is leading to England.
- 20:15In the second quarter New Orleans and the Giants are a 7-7 tie in the second quarter.
- 20:19Cleveland 10-0 over Kansas City in the second quarter. The 49ers 6 Atlanta 3 in the second quarter. No score in Baltimore first down at the 36.
- 20:27Dowdy wide right Carr wide left Jones on first down wants to throw drops it off the chapter who dropped the ball. Just a quick out to the tight end chapter who just kind of floated out laterally along the line of scrimmage almost.
- 20:39Jones's pass was dropped by Raymond second down 10.
- 20:46And then it did seem that Burr Jones took a little bit of a spell after releasing the ball and he seems to be okay if we get the opportunity Vince we might talk a little bit about the special protective gear that Baltimore's quarterback is wearing this afternoon to protect those severely bruised ribs.
- 21:03Second and 10 now for the Baltimore 36. Far and valley are both wide to the left side of the set which is the standard process. There goes Dowdy in motion back to the backfield of the far side Jones back to throw a straight drop setting up.
- 21:14Fires a screen Mitchell's got Mitchell 35 now 40 and about to the 42 or 3 yard line goes Lydell Mitchell and he is very angry with himself as Lydell as he tripped over the lead blocker coming out there in front of him.
- 21:26And in the 61 Bob Pratt was trying to help him and Lydell tripped over Bobby and went down he felt he should have got more yardage to tackle credit goes to Curtis Johnson.
- 21:34Yeah they said and I've used a lot of things that they haven't used before they didn't intend to come in here with an entirely new offense or anything like that.
- 21:41These little wrinkles are different Jones they're running a kind of a naked reverse they're running at the sideline with the ball with the flow of everybody going the other way.
- 21:49That screen pass the Lydell Mitchell somewhat different than they've set up before and the little flare that Chester dropped was a play we haven't seen lately.
- 21:57Third down for the Baltimore 42 yard line Dowdy wide right car wide left split backfield nobody behind Bird Jones.
- 22:03Chester the tight end on the right end of the line take away by Jones straight drop rolling a little bit.
- 22:07Watch the fake now tries to run out of the door.
- 22:23He's wearing a protective padding as you say Chuck and it's fun but it's he's also wrapped in there. I don't think he's wearing any any hard piece of light metal or hard leather.
- 22:40This is fun which will absorb a lot of the flow.
- 22:44It's a something a little bit different.
- 22:47We can get into it a little bit if we have the time later right now first out of the Miami 45 high formation gift to the second man Mitchell into the middle and whap he is good by that middle linebacker number 56 feet tall.
- 22:58And he stopped him for hardly any gain at all Bill Stansel defensively the Dolphin front four two very good at Bernd and Herter and Stansel and Stansel I think is an excellent defensive player and the tackles are recent crowders and they've got the rookie the name of towel in the middle of the linebacker
- 23:13and the other guy is that no-namer Bob Matheson as their three linebackers Curtis Johnson one corner and I see they're playing Jarrett's white on the other corner Charlie Bab and Jake Scott of the safety circums Baltimore with a second down and 10 at the Dolphin 45 standard process backfield car left
- 23:30down the right back to throw Jones a shallow drop rolls pressure coming Jones is trying to run away from it and he gets away from one man Ben Herter chasing him back at the 40 they brought him he's up over the 50 is Joe's and still on his feet at the 45 and down he goes so Jones who rolled all the way back to the Baltimore 35 then was able to run it back up to the line of scrimmage which is the Dolphin 45 yard line.
- 23:52Jones in plenty of trouble and all week long Vince Bagley and yours truly have been reading in the Baltimore papers about the rib injury to Jones and the one thing it would not affect would be his passing but most definitely it was that he would not be able to run this week.
- 24:0640 yards that time for a for no game but he did get out without a blow. The thing is Chuck if he gets hit in the shoulder it still jars his ribs if he gets hit on the right side it hurts on the left where the problem exists.
- 24:22And I'm sure everybody in the listening audience has known somebody or heard of somebody at one time or another who has said that the good pros are really good ones with the guys who have that ability to play her Jones back to throw third and Jeff setting fires outside to Mitchell Mitchell down to the Dolphin 40 and is racing for first down yard and he goes out of bounds around the Dolphin 36 37 yard line and not enough for a first down Mitchell on a little bit of a flare took the pass from Jones and I don't think he got first down yard.
- 24:49It's a little difficult for field goal this is McCauley coming in Jimmy Kennedy coming in their blockers and short yardage. This is a kind of a chance he plays Chuck fourth and two at the 37.
- 25:03A little while ago the Dolphins had first and 10 at the cold 48 after a punt if they pick up the ball now they could you know if they don't get the first down it'll be dolphin ball first and 10 at the Dolphin 37 and the Colts are going to go for the first down and they come in with a standard throw setback.
- 25:20Here we got Lydell Mitchell and hold that make it to Don McCauley one of the setbacks along behind the quarterback of Bert Jones waiting for the takeaway a long count by Jones he turns gets the holes holes off the left side and I don't think he got it all kind of beer straight ahead off the left side did not pick up first down yardage and the Dolphins will take over first down at about the Dolphin 36 and there is a timeout here in Baltimore will be back in 60 seconds.
- 25:44The score is in the second period Dell Williams a four yard touchdown run the extra point attempt by Steve McEmyer blocked and San Francisco now leading Atlanta six three first period Jones a 16 yard touchdown pass from Jim Hart the Cardinals trying to clench the NFC East lead the Bears seven nothing.
- 26:02The American football conference winner of the last three Super Bowls and six of the last seven has added a second straight victory in National Football League inter-conference competition and it's two consecutive triumphs in preseason play going into the 13th week of the NFL season with only four more inter-conference games to be played.
- 26:19The AFC maintains a clenching 22 to 14 margin in the annual 40 game competition and the six years of inter-conference games since the merger was completed for the 1970 realignment the NFC still holds a 119 to 111 and six edge with four games to go on 75 but the AFC has won the competition three of the last four times one year 1973 it ended in a tie.
- 26:41The NFC dominated the first two seasons in 70 and 1971.
- 26:49The broadcast is presented by authority of the National Football League Baltimore Colts it is intended for the private use of our audience and rebroadcast today play by play without the written consent of Baltimore Colts and Metro Media Inc. is prohibited.
- 27:12The Miami Dolphins.
- 27:16Don not have to split backfield no man directly behind him not give the mercury Mars swings his own left and cut the corner into the open and he's up on the 45 and pull down at about the 47 yard line.
- 27:26Morris with a good sweep outside was finally hauled down by Jackie Wallace after he picks up a first down on a swing of his own left end.
- 27:49Why did the right side of the set Howard truly first down at the Miami the 47 yard line dropped the quarterback with a long count yank for the way gives them our right side darks into a little bit of a hole and it's ready to and down he goes at the line of scrimmage.
- 28:03Fred Cook outstanding young Baltimore defensive end makes the tackle right along the line of scrimmage towards Dolphins second down still 10 Dolphins 47 no score six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
- 28:19Coming in rather going out of the ball game as Andre children and coming in this manage as a tight end that more set out to the left side of the set split and a flanker wide right is fully not again and Morris setbacks behind stock and second down in motion fully through the
- 28:34Dolphins backfield give tomorrow coming around that north on Mars alone around his own right and it's knocked down at the Baltimore 48 yard line as Bruce Laird came up very quickly and made the tackle.
- 28:49Danny Malone today he's both have an ankle problem but he's one of those very very deceptive type runners he now leaves and who lost comes in Solomon comes in Larry cycle is also in all resting at the cold 48 yard line again a five third down and five for the
- 29:07Baltimore 48 Solomon side of the set who lost the low man behind the quarterback Don Strock third and five of the Baltimore 48 the takeaway by the Miami quarterback he's still barking a long count Yanks it wants to throw a deep fade set the fire down the
- 29:22sideline that board can't get it about the Baltimore 31 incomplete ball is bad and again the Baltimore Colts did not a little bit of pressure looks like John Dutton had good pressure on Don Strock even though they did not get to him Freddie Cook was also there he's a straight drop
- 29:37back to the corner of Van Brocklin away dropped back that time straight backtracking not turning but looking at the potential receivers at all times and the ball is not too well thrown Larry cycles first part of the day will go from my left to my right down on the Baltimore
- 29:52Howard Stevens a very fine puck returner his company down that way is a real ham and Marshall Johnson the snap here comes Larry cycle cut it's a tie and deep and the head angling for the far sideline Stevens let the role it bounces back upfield to the Baltimore 15 where it is down by one of the Miami
- 30:12fans Ruth Elia and they're going to spot it down to the bottom of Baltimore 15 yard line and there was a timeout here in Baltimore with a score the Dolphins nothing and the Colts nothing another score at Atlanta Alfred Jenkins has got a 20 yard touchdown pass from Steve
- 30:28Kostya and now in the second period the Falcons have moved back out of San Francisco 10 6 getting back to interleague competition for a moment this book is working on a 10 game winning streak in intercom for us play including Super Bowl nine in which the Steelers defeated the Vikings 16 to 6 the open
- 30:45the Raiders also have a streak going against the NFC with eight straight starting with an October 7 1973 victory over the Cardinals and unless they make the Super Bowl they are finished with NFC competition for this season have beating New Orleans the Washington Redskins in Atlanta in overtime
- 31:01and they have six years of competition between the two NFL conferences the longest winning streak has been 11 by the Dolphins from November 15 1970 until they lost the Redskins 1974 Dallas 110 in a row for the NFC Houston never had beaten an NFC team losing 11 in a row and managing only one tie until they defeated the Washington Redskins earlier this year 13 to 10
- 31:28the 21 remaining in the first quarter no score Jones and the Colts start now from their own 14 high formation old the front man Lydell the second man start to the right to the left side and now the other side to give to Lydell Mitchell in the middle
- 31:40and the way the Washington DC and WCBM and Baltimore will pause now for station identification this is the Metro media Baltimore Colts football network. This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 32:00At 790 and 1420 this is American Forces radio.
- 32:10Out their own 22 high formation car left side the right side.
- 32:35and call out the last people up.
- 32:37So that was, Lydell, you take it up the middle,
- 32:39and we'll get them.
- 32:40And they did for a first down.
- 32:43The ball is spotted just a little bit ahead of the 27.
- 32:45A first down, Baltimore.
- 32:46Again, the eye.
- 32:47This time both Dowdy and Carr are set out wide to the left side.
- 32:50In motion, back toward the backfield, Dowdy.
- 32:52The give to the second man, Mitchell.
- 32:53Bumps outside, up to the 30.
- 32:55And is fighting his way straight ahead about to the 34 yard line.
- 32:58Lydell fakes it inside, bounce outside,
- 33:00and runs it up to about the Baltimore 34 yard line.
- 33:03A good pick up of some seven, second down and three.
- 33:09Lydell says he'll take it 40 times a game if that's necessary to win it.
- 33:13And I think he did that once against the Jets last year.
- 33:16He's headed in that kind of a direction.
- 33:18He likes to carry the ball so much, he even takes it home with him, I'm sure.
- 33:22Second down and three.
- 33:23The ball to the Baltimore 34.
- 33:25Dowdy wide to the left side of the set.
- 33:26Roger Carr to the right side.
- 33:27An eye formation.
- 33:28Old to front man.
- 33:29Mitchell to second man.
- 33:30Motion, Dowdy back toward the backfield.
- 33:32The turn.
- 33:32The gift to Mitchell.
- 33:33He comes into the middle of the line and almost lost the football.
- 33:37And a good second effort by Lydell.
- 33:39Mitchell recovered it.
- 33:40The tackle was thrown by Ernie Rhoades.
- 33:42And Lydell almost lost that football at the 35 yard line,
- 33:47where it's third down and two Baltimore.
- 33:51They've got to get about to the, almost to the 38 in order to get a first down.
- 33:56So it's actually third down and three.
- 33:58Don McCauley has gone in alongside of Lydell Mitchell in that Baltimore Colts backfield.
- 34:05They're in the split.
- 34:06No man directly behind the quarterback waiting for the take away by Jones.
- 34:09He wants to throw and third down.
- 34:10A fake. A fake.
- 34:11Another throw.
- 34:12It is incomplete.
- 34:13Attending for Don McCauley.
- 34:15Covering on the play was the linebacker Rhoades who got up looking all around
- 34:19to make sure there weren't any penalty markers dropped.
- 34:22Yeah, he tackled McCauley, but I think Mack had touched the ball.
- 34:25Trying to make a diving catch.
- 34:26So it was a legal play and David Lee will get the kick with a little bit of space behind him.
- 34:31This time, last time he kicked it to near the end zone.
- 34:34And waiting downfield at about the 20 yard line again is Nat Moore, the Miami Dolphins returner.
- 34:40David Lee will do the kicking for the Baltimore Colts.
- 34:42And again the Dolphins will mount a rush.
- 34:44Ten men on the line waiting for that snap from center.
- 34:47Delivered by Forrest Blue.
- 34:50Still waiting for the snap.
- 34:51There it is. David Lee's got it.
- 34:52Here comes the rush.
- 34:53He got it out of there.
- 34:54And again they almost blocked it. That's coming to the near sideline.
- 34:57It goes out of bounds somewhere around the Miami 32 or 3 yard line.
- 35:02And the Dolphins go to work now again if they're 30, call it the 33 if you will.
- 35:07And later score is Vince that are coming in.
- 35:10This is a Cardinal 7. The Bears nothing in the first quarter.
- 35:13In Atlanta, and there's a rejuvenated football team leading the 49ers 10 to 6 in the second quarter.
- 35:19The Giants and New Orleans in a 7-7 tie at half.
- 35:22Kansas City and Cleveland. Cleveland 10, Kansas City nothing at the half.
- 35:26All ready to go.
- 35:27Merck Morris, Nottingham setback behind on struck.
- 35:30The give goes to Morris into the middle.
- 35:31He's through for a good gain up to about the 38 yard line.
- 35:34And maybe beyond that goes Mercury Morris.
- 35:36Sutterhoof a great speed to get outside.
- 35:38This time ran it right down the throat.
- 35:40And has been pulled down by the Baltimore Colts.
- 35:43Jim Chyansky at somewhere around the 38.
- 35:47Second down and five.
- 35:58Again Nottingham and Morris in a foot back field behind quarterback struck.
- 36:02Wide to this near side to the right is Cooley.
- 36:04The other side is Netmore.
- 36:05Back to throw goes struck.
- 36:06Pressure coming.
- 36:07He throws the screen.
- 36:08It's caught by No!
- 36:09Nottingham dropped the football.
- 36:10Nottingham had it in the screen and dropped it.
- 36:13Like a basketball he just kind of came right back up to it but it's too late then.
- 36:17So Miami shows third and five at their 38.
- 36:20No score.
- 36:21First quarter a minute 22 remaining.
- 36:23Again a lot of pressure that time Chuck.
- 36:25But didn't prevent struck from putting it where he wanted it.
- 36:27But not dribbled it and that doesn't count.
- 36:31Third and five for the Miami Dolphins.
- 36:33They'll show us some different numbers in that back field right now.
- 36:36Larry Peiple has come into the ball game.
- 36:38Matt Moore is in there.
- 36:39Blue Rock is in there.
- 36:41Solomon is also in there.
- 36:42They go to a double wing to the Dolphins.
- 36:44The only man behind the quarterback is Blouache.
- 36:46Third down five from their own 38.
- 36:48In motion that Moore.
- 36:49The give goes to Moore on a reverse coming around the on right side.
- 36:52He is swept outside.
- 36:53Humphord misses him and then he is down.
- 36:55Humphord hit him a shot and knocked him off his pins as Ray Oldham missed him.
- 37:00And the reverse to that Moore trying to swing his right end gets the ball back to the line of scrimmage.
- 37:05And Dolphins will again have to punt to the cold center fourth and five at their 38.
- 37:09Boy it's a dead even game so far.
- 37:11No score and they've plugged it back and forth.
- 37:15Most of the prep moved a little farther, had the interception.
- 37:19No score and it seems like it ought to be that way.
- 37:22All ready to go.
- 37:23Larry Peiple will be the putter for the Miami Dolphins.
- 37:26Stevens waiting inside the Baltimore 20 and 25 waiting for the snap.
- 37:30There are also two other safety men back there with Baltimore.
- 37:32Here comes the snap and Peiple almost had it locked but what a kick he hung up.
- 37:37Stevens is backpedaling to take it at the 18, up to the 20.
- 37:41Outside, along to the 20.
- 37:43No he reverses field going back and fell down at the 20 yard line.
- 37:46Stevens tried to reverse the field and go the other way to the far sideline and fell.
- 37:50At the cold 20 it will be first and 10 at that spot.
- 37:56Almost blocking the Larry Peiple punt.
- 37:58It looks like Dan Dickel and he, you know, with only an eight man rush they came very close to blocking Peiple's putt.
- 38:05This we go to the final 27 seconds and I think you said it all just a moment ago.
- 38:10It's a dead even football game.
- 38:12It really has been.
- 38:13Two very good football teams.
- 38:15They have, you know, defense seems to have kind of been more of a thing than offense so far.
- 38:22First down at the 20 yard line.
- 38:24Eye formation, old tough man, deep man, right L Mitchell.
- 38:27Double plank, wide right, Dowdy in talk.
- 38:29Here's Dowdy in motion through the backfield.
- 38:30Pitch out to Mitchell trying to swing it right in.
- 38:32Turns the corner, gets up to the line of scrimmage and squirts forward for two or three yards as Miami got into the flow and closed what looked like a little bit of a hole.
- 38:40They closed it in a big hurry.
- 38:41And the tackle is made by Randy Crowler and Burn Dan Herders.
- 38:47They played it like the big ball game it is, kind of close to the best.
- 38:51And the time will run out.
- 38:52Neither team will be benefiting by the wind here at the stadium.
- 38:55There's very little wind.
- 38:56So that's the end of the first quarter and the score of Baltimore, nothing Miami.
- 39:00Last summer Terry Metcalf and Jack Buck, the host of NBC TV's Grandstand, cooperated in a youth sports program sponsored by KMOX-TV in St. Louis.
- 39:10For two months they visited area high schools showing NFL highlight films and holding discussion groups.
- 39:15When asked why he thought this program was important, Metcalf said,
- 39:18A high school student is at a stage where he's almost on his own but not quite.
- 39:22It's the time in his life when he most needs a little direction.
- 39:25When I talked with him I tried to relate my teen years to theirs.
- 39:29I tried to offer them some motivation.
- 39:31I talked about attitude and the desire to improve oneself.
- 39:35Well, Mr. Metcalf is improving himself.
- 39:38With two games left, Terry is on the verge of setting a league record for combined net yardage.
- 39:43He has 2,335 yards and needs 110 more to erase Mack Harris' record of 2,444 yards set for New England last year.
- 39:52Little wonder quarterback Jim Hart says Metcalf is number one and our offensive line is number two.
- 39:57When asked to evaluate Terry's worth to the St. Louis offense, our concern right now is Miami and Baltimore.
- 40:04As we go to the second quarter in Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Vince Baglia and Chuck Thompson, we have seen a score.
- 40:12Baltimore will have a second down at 8th of all resting at their own 23.
- 40:18There's quite a cold flavor to this Miami football club.
- 40:22When you look at the head coach, Don Schulte, who was a coach here in Baltimore, and then Don Dahl, the defensive coordinator.
- 40:28He's another former Colts coach.
- 40:30Schnellenberger, who coaches receivers for the Dolphins, another former Colts.
- 40:33Cassip, a former Baltimore Colts football player, is the offensive backfield coach.
- 40:38Tom Keen, a man who was the first all-Pro in the history of the Baltimore Colts franchise, coaches defensive backs.
- 40:44Of course, George Young is a director of pro scouting for the Miami Dolphins.
- 40:48So they really have a Baltimore flavor, not to mention many players who need to be with Baltimore.
- 40:53Eye formation out of the eye. Here's Jones rolling back to throw setting up.
- 40:56He fires a screen to Raymond Chester.
- 40:58Chester with blockers for the 25, for the 30, for the 35, and out of bounds.
- 41:02A screen to the tight end Raymond Chester, and Vince Baglia hears something else we haven't seen before.
- 41:08He's throwing a screen to Raymond.
- 41:09So it doesn't look a lot different, but every now and then they'll come up with a wrinkle that you haven't seen before, haven't seen lately.
- 41:17And that was effective. He had Coons in front of him, and George warded off people in front, and he was caught from the side.
- 41:24So from the Baltimore Colts, 23, to the Colts, 38 yard line, and a first down for the Baltimore Colts.
- 41:31Standard pro set backfield, Bill Owes and Lydell Mitchell shoulder to shoulder.
- 41:35Downing to the right side car, left Jones on first down, watch the throw, looks to find a receiver.
- 41:39Fires caught by Lydell Mitchell at the Baltimore 40, maybe three yard line.
- 41:43And I think when they spotted him, truthfully the 44 yard line, quick release to one of the best pass catchers the Colts have, Lydell Mitchell.
- 41:50So you figured Miami would come in here throwing short, Chuck, and on the other end,
- 41:54Burr Jones also trying to protect himself, the club trying to protect him.
- 41:58He's throwing short just as often as Strach is attempting it.
- 42:02Well we have a second and four at the Baltimore 44, no score.
- 42:05We're just starting the second quarter in Baltimore this afternoon.
- 42:08The weather, I guess in our tribe and we forgot, is just a glorious Sunday afternoon in December here in Baltimore.
- 42:14Sun shining, couldn't have a finer day weather-wise.
- 42:17Eye formation out of the eye, Jones rolls, gives it to the second man Mitchell.
- 42:20He comes hammering up the middle, goes Lydell to about the 47 yard line of the Baltimore Colts,
- 42:25before Bill Sandfill makes the tackle for the Miami Dolphins.
- 42:29A quick pick up of three, and the Colts face a third down in the yard at their own 47.
- 42:35Lydell sending the heavies right now to try to get it for McCauley.
- 42:38Mitchell comes out, Roger Carr is at the sidelines and Jimmy Kennedy, and they get Jimmy.
- 42:43What kind of yard did he go?
- 42:45And the Dolphins have dropped one of their linebackers.
- 42:47Let's see what kind of a down set they will show now.
- 42:50It looks as though they've got one, two, three, four, and they might even have a five man down set.
- 42:55That's exactly what they have, five down.
- 42:57Third down on the yard at the 47, standard throw backfield for the Baltimore Colts.
- 43:01And the gift of the man straight ahead, Bill Zillow to about the 49, and I think he's got first down yardage.
- 43:06We'd better wait for the official to verify that.
- 43:09From up here it looks as though he's got it, and the official has indicated yes to a first down,
- 43:14as Zillow picked up the one yard necessary.
- 43:18Chuck, I think the one thing he said today, there was some concern about the motion, the Colts being so high,
- 43:23that they might make mistakes, but they're going to make mistakes as the afternoon moves along.
- 43:28I think it's the tenseness of the ball game, which is forcing them to play anything,
- 43:32but solid football up to now, except for the clip on the opening kickoff.
- 43:36Baltimore, first down at the Baltimore 49.
- 43:39Doughty and Carr set out wide to the left side.
- 43:41High formation in motion comes Doughty through the backfield to the near sideline.
- 43:45Olds to front man Mitchell, the second to roll back by Jones, wants to throw fires.
- 43:48Sideline are caught by Carr and out of bounds with the Miami 41.
- 43:52That should be a first down as Carr ran the pattern designated to get the first down.
- 44:00Eleven yards, and that's enough.
- 44:06Right at the 40, they didn't want any more than that.
- 44:09As Chuck said, ran the pattern for the first down, he ran it to flag, and got there.
- 44:14And Jones drilled it.
- 44:16Just inside, yes he has thrown the ball without any evidence of the lip problem.
- 44:20What the heck, this opportunity where he may not face Jones again for some time,
- 44:26is going to make the most of it.
- 44:28Baltimore with the first down at the Miami 41.
- 44:30High formation, olds to front man Mitchell, the second man to hold on him.
- 44:33Here's the gift coming on the reverse, to Doughty.
- 44:35Doughty makes a move down to the 40, down to the 35, goes the Miami Dolphins, goes Glenn Doughty,
- 44:39and I thought for a moment, I saw motion, but what I saw was the step that Doughty took
- 44:44to start back through the backfield to get the reverse.
- 44:47You look at it as your peripheral vision, and broadcasters have to have that.
- 44:51I thought I saw somebody on the Miami team move, and then Doughty made the move,
- 44:56but as Chuck said, laterally or backwards to get into the flow to get the handoff.
- 45:01They gave it to the Dolphin 35 yard line where it is second down for Baltimore at that spot.
- 45:06High formation, olds to front man Mitchell, the second man, no changes there.
- 45:10Doughty is in motion toward the cold backfield.
- 45:12The turn, the gift to the second man Mitchell, and he is hit coming into the hole,
- 45:15and may have picked up a yard as it looked as though that big number 74 defensive tackle Randy Crowder
- 45:20popped him into a pileup, and the job then was finished by the Miami Dolphins number 59, Doug Swift.
- 45:25They spot the ball just about at Miami 34, a gain of a yard, third and three.
- 45:30You know, when you concentrate that blocking up front to blow people out directly in front of you,
- 45:35quick people like Swift and Matheson also in that play coming from the side.
- 45:39If they aren't deterred a little bit, they can get you.
- 45:43That's lateral pursuit I think they'd call it.
- 45:46Third and three at the Miami 34, wide to the left side car, to the right side dowdy,
- 45:51good backfield, nobody directly behind the quarterback, Jones back to throw.
- 45:54He sets up, time, time, looking now running.
- 45:56Jones is in trouble, looks to find a receiver, now starts to run, gets the block, down to the 30,
- 46:00out of bounds he goes with the Miami 25.
- 46:03Bill Ose turned and delivered a heck of a block, but enabled Burt Jones to run for the first down.
- 46:09Burt Jones, he's got a little bit of a head knee though.
- 46:13Bill Ose made the play possible, Burt himself with his arm up in the air,
- 46:17as if he would throw the ball, threaten to throw it until he got actually past the scrimmage line
- 46:22and took it all the way to the 25.
- 46:26Or 26.
- 46:28Just outside the 25, Vince, we've got another one of those very competent officiating crews
- 46:32that never put on a yard marker, put it in between.
- 46:35All right, now both Carr and Dowdy set out to the right side and put Raymond Shepter
- 46:40about 15 yards off the left end of the line and put backfield behind Jones, first down Miami 26.
- 46:45Take away by Jones, rolling back, setting up, looks to find a receiver, fires,
- 46:49caught by Carr at the 15, what a catch by Roger Carr.
- 46:54Yeah, he had to care his wife, good defensive position against him,
- 47:01but Jones drilled it and Roger made a stellar grab.
- 47:0612 yards, Roger is going to get a little bit of a breather, comes to the sideline
- 47:10and coming in to replace him is Marshall Johnson.
- 47:13Normally when we see Johnson out there, Vince, the Colts go to a kind of a double wing
- 47:17and whether or not he'll just run out of a flanker position, we'll know in a moment.
- 47:21No, they come out of it and he runs as a flanker.
- 47:24Wide to the left side, Marshall Johnson, wide to the right side, Glenn Dowdy,
- 47:27an eye formation, holds the front man, Mitchell the second man, first down at the Miami 15,
- 47:31take away by Jones, give to Mitchell, sets out the left side, trying to turn the corner
- 47:35and pulling into him and yanking him down is a very good linebacker, number 59, and that's Doug Swift.
- 47:40Bob Matheson also in on the tackle over there for the Miami Dolphins,
- 47:44let's change it to make it Matheson who made the tackle, Swift in pursuit.
- 47:48Mitchell's progress is just inside the 14 yard line and it will be second down nine for Baltimore at the Dolphin 14.
- 47:55Matheson's in the league nine years, he's from Duke, they call that 53 defense after Matheson.
- 48:02Again, Marshall Johnson coming wide to the right side of the Baltimore set,
- 48:06he brings with him Dowdy as a flop back to the right side, standard throw set, backfield,
- 48:10Dowdy in motion through the backfield of the far sideline, to take away by Jones,
- 48:13he's like, watch the throw, sets up, the fighter receiver is running, Jones starts the run to the near sideline
- 48:18and slides down at about the 13 yard line.
- 48:22Jones trying to avoid being hit by Jarrett's flight went into a slide,
- 48:26just like a baseball player would, and to avoid unnecessary injury to those ribs.
- 48:32Jarrett's helped him up.
- 48:34Jarrett's want to keep the fans down the end zone off his back.
- 48:38Not only that, Vince, I've really never known a really solid, good professional team who took cheap shots.
- 48:44You don't win championships that way.
- 48:46Exactly.
- 48:48Now Baltimore faces a very important third down at 8, the ball resting at the dalsum 13,
- 48:52Roger Carr is back in, wide to the right side of the set,
- 48:57and we've got Dowdy the other way, a split backfield, nobody behind Jones, Jones rolls back, watch the throw, looks fired.
- 49:03It is incomplete, intended for Roger Carr, and the officials are right on top of the play rules,
- 49:10it was a legal contact made by Barry Hill, the defender who hit Roger Carr before the ball got there.
- 49:17Carr never had a shot of making the catch, and there was no pass in appearance,
- 49:21the official rule, the hit was made in an effort to get to the football.
- 49:26Exactly, and that's the way it'll stand, and Tony Linhardt is on now to attempt a field goal,
- 49:32directly in the middle of the park, kicking into the closed end, and it'll be from about the 20 yard line, 19 yard line.
- 49:3920 yard line, meaning a 30 yard kick, and he's 5 for 7 in this area,
- 49:44waiting for the sap to hold it, Marty Domre, sap, spot, kick, in the air, on the way, and the kick is, it is so good.
- 49:53Linhardt has sifted from 30 yards out, and there's a timeout here in Baltimore, we'll be back in one minute.
- 50:00Now the scores are passed along to you at Atlanta, Steve Mickemeyer, 26 yard field goal, and at the half,
- 50:06Atlanta is leading San Francisco 10 to 9, and a 40 yard field goal in the first period by Jim Bakken,
- 50:12and after one, St. Louis leads the Bears 10-0.
- 50:15Other scores, no details at the half, Buffalo leading New England 13 to 7, also at the half, New Orleans, the New York Giants tied at 7-7.
- 50:24The Pittsburgh Steelers clinched their second straight AFC Central Division crown Saturday afternoon
- 50:30with a convincing 35 to 14 victory over the second place Cincinnati Bengals.
- 50:34Frank Doraris rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while Terry Bradshaw passed for one and ran for another.
- 50:40The Steeler defense also scored a touchdown, set up another, and sacked Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson four times.
- 50:47Cincinnati's record dropped to 10-3, but the Bengals still can gain a playoff berth as the AFC's wild card team
- 50:53if they beat San Diego in their season finale a week from today.
- 50:58More action now in the second period as we go back to Baltimore.
- 51:02Well the Baltimore Colts field goal kicker, Tony Lindhardt, in his first effort of the afternoon, is missed
- 51:09from dead smack in front of the upright from 30 yards up.
- 51:13That's right, and his 70 yard drive ends up with nothing.
- 51:16He's taking it from the 21 yard line.
- 51:18It's around the 10, the 12.
- 51:20And now they have Nottingham, the front man of the eye, and Merck Morris, the second man to give to Morris,
- 51:25who comes through a, well, not very much of a hole, and the reason there isn't very much of a hole is the airman refused to be moved,
- 51:30and Jim Chionski got into the middle of things, and John Dutton was there to help him,
- 51:35so the gain is out maybe to the 21 yard line, making second down and nine.
- 51:41Well they spot the ball now at the 22, so we'll call it second down and eight Miami, after Dutton, 22.
- 51:50Again, Merck Morris, Don Nottingham, the setbacks behind Don Stront, the Miami quarterback,
- 51:55the third one they have been forced to use this year, the turn by Stront to give on the draw to Morris.
- 51:59It opens up a gaping hole in the open 35, 40, and down he goes at about the 45 yard line.
- 52:05Morris and some Nifty blocking up front by that offensive line of the Miami Dolphins.
- 52:11They opened a gaping hole for Mercury.
- 52:13Morris who runs it out, and his foot down they say right at about the 42 yard line of the Dolphins.
- 52:19Call it the 43.
- 52:20Close, I think, caught in the foot.
- 52:22Chionski was in there, and they ran a real good draw play.
- 52:2521 yard.
- 52:29First down at the Miami 42, a standard throw set backfield behind the quarterback Don Stront.
- 52:34Waiting for the take away, Stront rocks the throw, shallow drop, looks to find a receiver, five-miner, it is caught.
- 52:39And held over there by Matt Moore, Lloyd Mumford delivered a good hit at about the 48 yard line of the Miami Dolphins, a gain of five.
- 52:47Second down and about five for the Dolphins at their own 48, no score.
- 52:56The only scoring opportunity was just seconds ago, and McColts tried to field goal from 30 yards out, Linhart missed it.
- 53:02And the Dolphins are under a head of steam right now coming from their own 20 to their own 48 for a second down and five.
- 53:09Fully wide to the left side of the set.
- 53:11Split backfield, nobody behind the quarterback Stront, waiting for the take away.
- 53:16Stront yanked it away, gave it to Nottingham, trying to swing to the right turn of the corner and flat, he got it.
- 53:21And got it good as it looked like Freddie Cook was there to make a very good tackle of the tough running little Don Nottingham.
- 53:27Jump out at the 48 yard line, so we'll come up to a third down and still about five at the Miami 48.
- 53:34These are the situations that Bob Dreesche was so proficient.
- 53:37Third down and you had to throw the ball.
- 53:39More than likely they'll throw here, maybe run a draw again, but Dresche hasn't proven this stage of his game yet.
- 53:46One of the things Dreesche could do in this kind of a situation was that staggered and stuttered Cadence house that was really, really helped.
- 53:52And now as Miami comes on the ball, Langer, the center, says hold on a minute, the general says I'd like to have a clean football if you don't mind, and they're going to bring it in for him.
- 54:00Meantime, we've got Larry Seifel in there as a running back for the Dolphins alongside a blue lash. Both of these are very good pass catchers.
- 54:09Fully as wide to the left side of the set, not more wide to the right side.
- 54:12Third down and five at the Miami 48, a passing down.
- 54:16Waiting for the takeaway by whoops, there's movement in the Miami line.
- 54:19Back to throw stock and Joe Airman wraps him up back there.
- 54:22A movement that looks like it might have been the left side offensive guard for the Miami Dolphins that drove the staff down, and that's exactly who it turns out to be.
- 54:34It'll be Bob Kuchenberg, who I think just kind of straightened up in the pass blocking posture just before the pass.
- 54:44So there's a five yard walk off back about to the 43 yard line, and it is a third down and ten.
- 54:52Well, actually a short ten, and here comes Solomon out wide to the left side of the set, not more wide to the right side.
- 54:59Sit back, the old blue lash and Seifel is behind the quarterback, Strach, third down and ten, a long count by Strach, still counting, still counting takeaway.
- 55:06Straight, wants to throw, fires down the middle, in be completed with Sloan behind, behind the would-be receiver, number 89, Matt Moore.
- 55:14The ball may have failed or it may have been poorly thrown.
- 55:17I'm not in a position to say.
- 55:20So Baltimore perhaps taking over a little bit of the momentum of the game in a scoreless game.
- 55:25If you had to give a decision, if this were a fight, Baltimore might be ahead on points, but they're not ahead on points on the scoreboard.
- 55:32And Strach is in the position, and he and Seifel, Matt, picks to Stevens down around the 20.
- 55:36Larry Seifel, not only a good distance kicker, but his hang time is remarkable.
- 55:40Stevens is waiting between the Baltimore 15 and 20, no score in the second quarter, 6-21 remaining.
- 55:45Waiting for that snap from Setter, a long count, now the snap.
- 55:49Here comes Seifel, penalty marker drops, here's the punt coming up toward it is Stevens.
- 55:53Stevens gets it at the 20, and it's peeled by the first man downfield, number 44, and that is Barry Hill of the Miami Dolphins, who made the tackle at the Baltimore 21.
- 56:01I thought I saw a flag go down back upfield, but apparently I did not.
- 56:05I think you did, Chuck.
- 56:06Yes, I was. Offside, they're picking up already.
- 56:09Miami offside apparently, and Baltimore might want this one over.
- 56:16And yet, I don't think so. They're going to take it at the 21-yard line.
- 56:20Now listen, what you see is what you got. That's exactly the way the Colts are playing it right now.
- 56:25There is a break in the action. Let's pause now for this message.
- 56:29Dallas' youthful defense shut down Washington's over-the-hill gang Saturday, and quarterback Roger Stavok survived the shot in the ribs to direct the Cowboys to a 31-to-10 decision over their most hated rivals and earn a ticket to the NFL playoffs.
- 56:43The Redskins loss removed all hope of Washington continuing in the Super Bowl chase, the first time that has happened since George Allen took over the club in 1971.
- 56:52Stavok, who has a history of bad performances against the rival Redskins, completed only two of ten passes in the opening half.
- 56:59But after suffering a blow that almost put him out of the game late in the first half, came back to direct two long scoring drives in the second half to put the game out of reach.
- 57:08The Cowboy defense, meanwhile, was throttling one Redskin effort after another, and finally sent Washington quarterback Billy Kilmer to the bench with an injured right shoulder early in the final period.
- 57:18The Dallas defense, stung for 28 points in the opening half last week against St. Louis, had the final moment of glory, with Charlie Waters intercepting a Randy Johnson pass and dashing 20 yards for a score.
- 57:30This is the scoreless game, 6-14 to go in the second period. Don't forget the locker room report after the game.
- 57:36We'll let out the outstanding Colts defensively and offensive players of the game, and both Colts have received gift certificates from Hamburg.
- 57:43All right, Vince, a double flanker to the left side of the moment. Charlie is set out there, and in the slot left is Doughty.
- 57:51Foot back field, nobody behind the quarterback Jones, and here's the turn to give to Mitchell. Mitchell comes on, and is playing straight ahead to about the 24-yard line, where that real good Miami defense led this time by defensive end Bill Stanfield.
- 58:02Stand him up, just about at the 25-yard line, again a four, second down and six.
- 58:09Time remaining better than five minutes, 5.57 remaining in the first half. The Miami Dolphins nothing, the Baltimore Colts nothing.
- 58:18It's been, you know, kind of a tough football game, and the offensive units have been dominated by the defensive units so far today.
- 58:25High formation by Baltimore, frontman, old seed man, Lide Al Mitchell.
- 58:29Back away by Jones, give to the second man. Mitchell get hit coming into the hole, and he is able to get forward another yard, maybe to the 26-yard line, hanging all over him is linebacker Toll, the middle man.
- 58:40And Bob Matheson was also in there on the tackle. They spot it just about at the Baltimore 26.
- 58:45Matheson's been tough, hasn't he? Toll, there's been some comments in the Baltimore papers about they ran at Toll effectively the last time. He has to read that, and it's making Steve a little more aggressive today.
- 58:59Well, on the official spot of the football, Vince, he put it right back on the 25, short field, third down and six now.
- 59:04A foot back field over to go high on the quarterback. We've got Carr wide left down, he's on the right side.
- 59:09Chest to the tight end on the right end of the line, back to Toll goes Jones, here comes some pressure, he looks, rolls out of it to his right. Jones is running, looking to find a receiver.
- 59:15Fires upfield, and it's caught by Glenn Dowdy on a peelback at about the 38-yard line.
- 59:21Dowdy came back on Jarrett's right and beat him to the ball. When your quarterback is in trouble, go back home and help him.
- 59:28And that's the, you know, law of the jungle, and that's exactly what Glenn Dowdy did.
- 59:32Super play. Burt might have taken a chance on beating Toll, who was coming over to medium at the sideline, but that was a good decision to throw the ball, and Glenn's move coming back to get it made it possible.
- 59:44Good receivers I've seen down through the years, Vince, always do that. When their quarterback gets in trouble, you'll always find him for the most part, breaking the path route and trying to come back and help him out a little bit.
- 59:55All ready to go, first down at the 38 of the Baltimore Colts, standard throw set backfield, here's Jones taking away, and first down, watch the throw, looks to find a receiver set.
- 1:00:04Firing deep, here comes Dowdy on the takeoff, and it's incomplete and out of bounds down around the Miami 20-yard line.
- 1:00:10Dowdy had his man by a couple of steps, Jones threw the ball the way it should have been thrown. More to the sideline and into the playing area, and it's carried out of bounds.
- 1:00:20Haven't seen Dowdy go deep that much, Chuck, my car has been the usual deep man, but Dowdy is kind of an intermediate depth receiver. That time he was as deep as we've seen him this year.
- 1:00:34Well, Jarrah Swite got a little bit of help that time from Charlie Bab, and that was about as deep as we have seen Dowdy go this year, from the Baltimore 40 to the opposition 40.
- 1:00:4420, excuse me. Second down and 10, foot backfield, nobody behind Jones, take away, no fake loss, the throw, Jones is back setting.
- 1:00:51Fires down the middle, it's over the head of the attentive receiver, Raymond Chester. Jones just burned the ball and it's sailed, and went over to Raymond Chester.
- 1:00:59We come up to a third down and 10, Baltimore at their own 38.
- 1:01:03Baltimore showing a lot of respect for Miami's defense up front, which has been tough and tough running for Livell this afternoon.
- 1:01:12Have you had a chance Vince to watch on the passing plays the work of George Kuntz against that defensive end, Vern Den Herder?
- 1:01:19Yes I have.
- 1:01:20Is that nice?
- 1:01:21Yeah, good throws, really good.
- 1:01:22Right, that's specifically Chuck that the whole line is giving Bird a lot of time. Good protection.
- 1:01:28All ready to go, third down and 10, Baltimore 38, foot backfield now, this passing down, let's see what Jones and McColls can do about him. McColley is on the backfield, back to throw, Jones.
- 1:01:36A channel drop, look how pressure he ducks him, and Stanfield catches him from behind and down he goes with about the Baltimore 33.
- 1:01:43If one doesn't get you, the other will. The first pressure was presented by number 74, Randy Crowder. Jones ducked him and got out of there, and then Stanfield caught him from behind, and Jones is perfectly alright.
- 1:01:54As he comes to the sideline, Baltimore now is in a punting situation with a third to fourth down at about 50.
- 1:02:01That's Nat Moore, trying to get him on the bottom.
- 1:02:06But returner this time is Nat Moore, he's back at the Miami 20 yard line, again the Dolphins put 10 men up front. They have every time David Lee has huddled, they have had a 10 man rush.
- 1:02:16Waiting for the snap, it's okay, here comes the rush, and David gets a heck of a good kick away, deep to Nat Moore, waiting at about the 23.
- 1:02:24Along the 25 to the outside, and up the sideline, and out of bounds he goes, and the tackle was made by number 55, Dan Dickle of the Baltimore Colts, somewhere around the 28 yard line.
- 1:02:34Nine out, here in Baltimore with a score, the Colts, nothing to the Dolphins, nothing.
- 1:02:39Top ball running back Larry Collins scored two touchdowns as Texas A&I University defeated Salem College of West Virginia 37 to nothing in the 20th annual NAI Champions Bowl.
- 1:02:50The victory in Gainesville Tech Games was the 26th consecutive win for the Javelinas, and gave them their fifth NAIA crown.
- 1:02:57Texas A&I finished with an unblemished 12-0 mark while Salem fell to 11-1 on the season.
- 1:03:03The Javelinas scored three times in the opening half against the usually tough defense of the Tigers.
- 1:03:08In 11 games, Salem had allowed only a total of 19 points in the first half.
- 1:03:13Meanwhile, at Sacramento, California, Northern Michigan running back, the Ari ran 68 yards for a touchdown in the first play from scrimmage of the second half Saturday,
- 1:03:22giving the Wildcats a 16-14 victory over Western Kentucky in the NCAA Division II championship in the Commedia Bowl.
- 1:03:29Ari, who carried 11-0 for 111 yards, took the handoff from quarterback Steve Mariucci and appeared tackled at the line of scrimmage, but he broke through and ran out of Hanford into the end zone.
- 1:03:40Well, Don Schrock jumps into the offensive line over Miami Dolphins who go to work from their own 28-yard line.
- 1:03:48First down, about 3.20 remaining on the first half, but it's been absolutely built.
- 1:03:52Fin so far as the scoreboard is.
- 1:03:55Fully wide to the left side.
- 1:03:57Standard pro-set backfield, Merck Morris and Don Nottingham behind Schrock.
- 1:04:02Waiting for the take. Here's Fully in motion through the backfield.
- 1:04:04The turn, the get-go to Nottingham. He comes off the left side and hammers his way up over the 35 to about the 36-yard line where Jim Chayensky makes the tackles for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:04:14For WEMD in Eastern Maryland and the Ottawa Network station, we will pause now for station identification.
- 1:04:19This is the Metro Media Baltimore Colts football network.
- 1:04:22This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 1:04:26The second down and two at the Miami 36. Take away by Schrock, get to Nottingham off the right side.
- 1:04:34He hammers his way up over the 40 to the Miami 45-yard line.
- 1:04:38Power running, straight veers right and left by Nottingham.
- 1:04:42That's picked up a first down for the Dolphins at their own 46.
- 1:04:45Eight yards and two on the first down. It's 10 on that one.
- 1:04:49And the Miami offensive line blowing the Colts out at this stage.
- 1:04:53Absolutely right. Matt Moore, wise on the right side.
- 1:04:57To the left side is Howard Quilley, first down at the Miami 46.
- 1:05:01Schrock looking over the Colts defensive unit.
- 1:05:03The rookie quarterback yanks it away. A shallow drop wants to go fire quickly.
- 1:05:07He's got Matt Moore open at the Baltimore 40.
- 1:05:09To the Baltimore 35, down on the 30-yard line. Still on his feet and down he goes.
- 1:05:13At about the 30-yard line, the tackle made by Jackie Wallace.
- 1:05:16Matt Moore on a very quick end pattern, made a good catch and an equally fine run. Miami first down after Baltimore 30.
- 1:05:23There's the two-minute warning with a score. The Colts, nothing, and Miami, nothing.
- 1:05:27We'll be back in 60 seconds.
- 1:05:30Julian Karnen of Lake Worth, Florida shot a two-under-par 70 Saturday to take a one-shot lead over Judy Rankin and Jane Breilock
- 1:05:38in a windblown first round of the 36-hole Colgate triple crowd of golf in Palm Springs, California.
- 1:05:44Mrs. Karner had three birdies and a single bogey for her total of that 70 over a 6,511-yard Mission Hills Country Club court,
- 1:05:54the set of the Dinah Shore Winners Circle L PGA event held annually in April.
- 1:05:58Sandra Palmer, who captured this year's Dinah Shore Classic, and Joanna Walsh, who met 72,
- 1:06:04while Pat Bradley, winner of the Colgate Far East event at Melbourne, Australia last weekend,
- 1:06:08was tied at 76 with Carol Mann and Joyce Kazmierski. Japan's Chako Higuchi was dead last in the field of nine ladies.
- 1:06:16She had a 77.
- 1:06:18The Phoenix Roadrunners of the National Hockey League announced Saturday they have traded back winger Peter McAmey
- 1:06:25to the San Diego Mariners for forward Dave Walther in a straight player transaction.
- 1:06:30With two minutes remaining, we are past by far the deepest Miami penetration of the day.
- 1:06:38First down, Baltimore 30-yard line. And here come the Dolphins, and that full defense is really hard-pressed now to get the job done.
- 1:06:46Morris and Nottingham setbacks behind Strauch, waiting for the Miami quarterback's takeaway.
- 1:06:51Fake hands off to Morris, swinging around his own line and makes the cut and gets hit by Tom McCloud,
- 1:06:56and down he goes at about the 33-yard line. McCloud, the goal linebacker, did a very good job penetrating,
- 1:07:02and then, as he always does, a one-on-one tackle for a loss of three.
- 1:07:06He might be the best on the club at that stage, just one-on-one tackling.
- 1:07:10The Miami club's threatening, as you said, the deepest they can.
- 1:07:13Baltimore doesn't have the benefit of its crowd to help them in the open end.
- 1:07:17It's much more penetrating, the noise, when you get in the close then.
- 1:07:21Again, Morris and Nottingham in a foot backfield, nobody directly behind the quarterback.
- 1:07:25The second and 13 at the Baltimore, 33 right now, waiting for the Strauch's takeaway.
- 1:07:29He yanks without a bound, and inside hand off to Nottingham, cuts the middle and fell down,
- 1:07:32coming across the 30, and managed to pull his way to about the 28-yard line.
- 1:07:36Dan White held him there. Nottingham seems to trip and pitch forward, and is spotted.
- 1:07:41The ball is spotted just about at the 29. Jim Chayesky made the tackle.
- 1:07:46Nottingham takes third and nine.
- 1:07:48Timeout, in fact, the first they've taken was 108 to go.
- 1:07:51Strauch, I wouldn't imagine, is quite as proficient at using the clock as greasy as one of the best in this business.
- 1:08:00Now, one of the things that we asked ourselves before today's ball game was whether or not the Baltimore Colts defensive front four
- 1:08:06that leads the National Football League in sacks with 55,
- 1:08:09would be able to make their presence felt against this rookie quarterback, Don Strauch.
- 1:08:13Well, the answer is a very definite no. They have not yet been able to penetrate.
- 1:08:17The offensive unit of the Miami Dolphins, the offensive line, has more than contained the rush of the Baltimore Colts front four.
- 1:08:24They have, right, Chuck. Mostly, he's been throwing short.
- 1:08:26The one time he threw long, it was picked off by Lloyd Mumford, so we did get some pressure that time,
- 1:08:32but they haven't been close to a sack in the six or seven times that he has thrown the ball.
- 1:08:38Seven attempts and three completions and no sacks.
- 1:08:42When play is resumed, we've got a third down and about nine. The ball resting, they put the ball down at the 28-yard line,
- 1:08:48so it's third down and eight. And the ball at the Baltimore Colts, 28-yard line.
- 1:08:53And we've got Ray Oldham on field, middle line back to Chyensky, is off five, defensive back to on field.
- 1:08:59They come out into a passing formation, a double wing. The only man behind the quarterback, Blouac,
- 1:09:03waiting for Strauch to take away from Miami.
- 1:09:07That's Heath Jutt, rolls back, wants to throw. Flag dropped on the play, rolling to the right, Strauch looking.
- 1:09:12Now firing into the end zone. That ball is there. And it is an incomplete pass. He is out of the end zone.
- 1:09:18They rule he is out of the end zone, but he caught the ball.
- 1:09:21And a penalty flag has also been dropped, and we'll see what this is all about.
- 1:09:27Chuck, that was a rather superb catch by Moore. Unfortunately, out I thought he had gotten his hands down,
- 1:09:33but Miami was illegally in motion prior to the snap, so he can't feel too bad about that.
- 1:09:40He's practiced the dragging of the feet as Mr. Moore, and he made an excellent grab.
- 1:09:46But the official right down there on the end line, just, you know, right on top of the play, perfectly positioned,
- 1:09:51says, uh-uh, no catch, you're out. And the Colts decline the penalty, and it brings up fourth down,
- 1:09:57and eighth from the 28, and let's see who's on field for it. Darrow, Yarrow, your premier, Darrow is on to try it.
- 1:10:05It'll be kicked from the 35, which means it's a 45-yard effort, and he is excellent, just excellent from these distances.
- 1:10:14Waiting for the snap, fight for the holder, caught, kicked, in the air, on the way, and let's see whether he's going around.
- 1:10:20No, it looks like he missed it. It came out wide to the left. You know, from the 45-yard field goal effort by your premier,
- 1:10:27it is wide to the left side of the upright, and these two good football teams,
- 1:10:32they've just been hammering away without a score with only 55 seconds left in the half.
- 1:10:37Each has missed the opportunity to field goal. This is more difficult than certainly Lindharts was.
- 1:10:43Baltimore gets the ball at the 28-yard line. John Crittenden told me before the game, Chuck,
- 1:10:48Yarrow spiked himself up. He doesn't like dirt fields off which to kick, but I'll tell you the truth,
- 1:10:53there's a bit of a crack there. He doesn't have much grass on it, so he didn't stub his foot going through it.
- 1:10:58He just missed it wide to the left.
- 1:11:00Well, he's, you know, he's been very, very good, but a 45-yard effort is, you know, kind of difficult.
- 1:11:05First down, Baltimore, at the 28-yard line of the Baltimore Colts. Back to throw goes Bert Jones, and first down, 20 at times.
- 1:11:11Going for broke, here comes Glenn Doughty, incomplete at the Miami 20. Oh, what a bomb from Bert Jones to the intended receiver,
- 1:11:22Glenn Doughty, and believe me, it was overthrown.
- 1:11:25Overthrown. Had to throw it 70 yards because it was somewhat diagonally from the middle of the field or the sideline,
- 1:11:31and it was overthrown 70 yards, so Glenn just couldn't get there.
- 1:11:36Roger Carr was shrinking down the other side, Chuck, and he wasn't just running out there to keep somebody occupied.
- 1:11:44He might have been a receiver.
- 1:11:46As the C.B.s would say, he was down southbound and down. He really was. He was flying.
- 1:11:53All right, wide to the right goes Doughty. The other side goes Roger Carr.
- 1:11:58Quick backfield, second down, 10 at the 28. Jones again wants to put it in the air.
- 1:12:02Straight drop, set, cracker, and down he goes at the 15-yard line.
- 1:12:06And breaking through was Bob Matheson, the linebacker, and he pulled Jones off the speed of the Colts.
- 1:12:1115-yard line. Let's see where the official is going to spot the ball. They say the 16-yard line.
- 1:12:17The Colts offensively vent to brush for 71 yards and pass for 82, a total of 153 yards.
- 1:12:23The Dolphins in the first half, 36 yards passing, 68 yards rushing, a total of 104.
- 1:12:30And with 43 seconds of the clock ticking out and third down and very, very long,
- 1:12:35I wouldn't be surprised if they just sit on it here.
- 1:12:38Well, I think, of course, Miami can take a timeout and force them to punt.
- 1:12:41Right. They don't make it on this down.
- 1:12:43Third down, about 22 at the Baltimore 16. Doughty to the right side of the set, Carr to the left side of the set,
- 1:12:49waiting for Jones to take away from quarterback Mendenhall.
- 1:12:51He's got it. A straight drop, box the throw, set, rolls to his right, fired, penalty marker.
- 1:12:55As McCauley catches the screen at the 20, now to the 25, and then he has pulled off the speed at the 27,
- 1:13:00and the penalty flag has been dropped back downfield at the 10-yard line.
- 1:13:04Ernie Rhone makes the stopping tackle, and we got the preliminary sign, but I missed it.
- 1:13:09I think, I don't know whether it was holding or what it was. I just missed the signs.
- 1:13:12I know it could happen here. Now, we have 13 seconds to go. Miami takes the penalty.
- 1:13:16Baltimore will get the down over, so I guess they could run out the clock.
- 1:13:20However, with another timeout left, Miami could stop the clock, force a punt,
- 1:13:24and we could see a fair catch up here around midfield, and you're farming in one of those three-pick field goals.
- 1:13:30So, I think that's all academic. They can still take the penalty if it's against the Colts.
- 1:13:35Yes, it was. It was holding in Miami to find it.
- 1:13:37Did they find it?
- 1:13:38Right. It's now a fourth down for the Baltimore Colts, and the ball resting at the Colts 27.
- 1:13:43It's about fourth down 11 at the Baltimore 27. David Lee is on the front, and this will be a 10-man rush again from Miami.
- 1:13:50Matt Moore is waiting at the Miami 25-yard line, waiting for the snap from center from far us blue.
- 1:13:55Still waiting, still waiting. There's the snap. Perfect. Here comes the kick.
- 1:13:59They've got two men in, and they block it. They block it, and it's going to be caught and batted upfield by one of the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:14:04They roll it and let it roll, and let it roll to the Miami 46, and then they down it.
- 1:14:09Now they're calling for a play.
- 1:14:10The penalty flyer just dropped.
- 1:14:11I'll tell you, Chuck, they're going to get a field goal shot, I believe, with three seconds.
- 1:14:15This has to be a penalty against the Colts. Dan White batted the ball as the kick was partially blocked, but it continued upfield past the scrimmage line.
- 1:14:27Illegally batting the football, and, you know, White tried to make it look as though he fumbled the ball, and his play acting was not good.
- 1:14:34Vern Den Herder blocked the punt for the Miami Dolphins, and the penalty flags are dropped along the 32.
- 1:14:41Three seconds left. Miami is definitely going to get, well, let's see, will they take it as it is? No, they can't.
- 1:14:47We'll wait to see where they spot that football. It's right now resting along the 32-yard line.
- 1:14:53The Epremian is on field. Schuyler is hollering from the sideline. Three seconds on the stadium clock.
- 1:15:01Now, if they get a penalty from the spot of the violation, and I haven't seen this one, not this year.
- 1:15:07They could move the ball closer to the goal line with three seconds. It's plenty of time to kick, but Epremian is now going off the field.
- 1:15:14Now, let's see what the official mark is.
- 1:15:18Illegal procedure against Baltimore to climb. The Dolphins take the football, and it will be at the 32-yard line of the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:15:29And Epremian's coming back in.
- 1:15:31And we'll have the field goal effort from Garrow Epremian, and it will be somewhere in the vicinity of 48 yards.
- 1:15:38It'll be spotted along about the 37-38-yard line. He's one for one between 40 and 50.
- 1:15:44He has six for six between 30 and 40, and five for five between 20 and 30.
- 1:15:51In fact, they're going to march off to more yards, so it's not going to be this long.
- 1:15:55I thought they declined 15 yards. This is really going to hurt. Now he's right in the middle of the goal post, and he'll have about a 20-35 yard.
- 1:16:02Oh, I thought they declined it. Now, if they declined it, that means that we punt it again.
- 1:16:09If they decline the penalty, Baltimore, if they accept the penalty, Baltimore will kick again.
- 1:16:13If they decline the penalty, I think if they decline the penalty, the Colts will have to kick it again.
- 1:16:20We don't have a kicker in there. Illegal procedure against the Colts is batting the ball.
- 1:16:26That's what Pat Haggerty is indicating up this way. He's a referee.
- 1:16:30But Miami has the Epremian in, and they're going to try to field goal from the 25-yard line.
- 1:16:37So now, here is where the Colts are penalized, and apparently it's a loss of...I'm a little bit confused about this.
- 1:16:43The call was made after the kick. In other words, here's a 25-yard goal effort by Epremian.
- 1:16:52Fats, kicks, in the air, on the way, and it is no mistake. Good.
- 1:16:59So maybe he can't kick off dirt. He didn't that time.
- 1:17:04He's a believer.
- 1:17:06But you get an interpretation of that. It was batting the ball, which is illegal. In other words, the illegal procedure was for batting the ball.
- 1:17:15And therefore they have no choice but to accept the penalty and couldn't decline it.
- 1:17:18That's the end of the first half. With the score, the Baltimore Colts something, the Miami Dolphins nothing. We'll have more in one minute.
- 1:17:29Well, one of the things that you don't see that often in professional football today, we have seen here at Baltimore, the Dolphins and the Colts, and they've scored in this first half.
- 1:17:38The only really scoring opportunities either club had were field goal efforts, and two of the three field goals that have been missed in this first half were certainly very makeable,
- 1:17:49particularly when you think of a fellow like Garrow Epremian, who has made some, you know, astonishing kicks in his career with the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:17:56He has missed two, one from 25, one from 45, and the Colts' Tony Linhardt has missed one from 30.
- 1:18:02And Baltimore with Linhardt will kick it off. Down on the goal line, Nat Moore, and also Hubert Gann waiting for Linhardt to reach that football.
- 1:18:11He's up on the ball, hits it, and he's hit it good. Feet toward the Miami goal line.
- 1:18:15Waiting for it is Nat Moore up to the 10, down to 15, to the 20. Great wedge, 25, outside 30, up to the 32.
- 1:18:22Four bounds he goes, spun out there by the Baltimore Colts' Dave Pair.
- 1:18:26And for WCBM in Baltimore and WAMD in Aberdeen, Maryland, we'll pause down for station identification.
- 1:18:32This is the Metro Media Baltimore Colts' football network.
- 1:18:35This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:18:39SCM to the Arizona.
- 1:18:48Dolphin ball, first down, and the ball resting at the Miami 32-yard line.
- 1:18:54Drock is again quarterbacking the turn.
- 1:18:56The give goes to Morris into the middle. He nights his way straight ahead up over the 35 to about the 37-yard line.
- 1:19:02And a good, sheer straight-ahead power from the Miami Dolphins before John Dutton is able to pull him down somewhere around the 37.
- 1:19:12Mercury Morris, one of the more celebrated outside runners in the National Football League, doing a good bit of running right down the middle here against the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:19:20The second down and five. The Dolphins have done this with alarming regularity today.
- 1:19:25At a first and 10, run it and come up second and five as they are right now.
- 1:19:29Nottingham and Morris set back behind the quarterback Don Schrock in motion 20.
- 1:19:33The give goes to Nottingham. Coming outside, shakes off one backer and gets backed up at about the 40-yard line, maybe the 41-yard line.
- 1:19:41Bruce Laird, among other guys like Stan White in there on the hit.
- 1:19:45Also Nelson Muncie over there. They spotted just over the 40-yard line. Third down and a very short two for Miami at that spot.
- 1:19:54Jully out and tight end comes in to replace him with Locker.
- 1:20:00And as Chuck said, they've tried to make five or better on first and they've done it a lot.
- 1:20:04They've readying some pressure off Schrock, forcing him not to throw very much.
- 1:20:08Nottingham and Morris shoulder to shoulder in a standard throw set.
- 1:20:12Matt Moore shifts over to a wing on the right side of this Miami set. Third and two with the Miami 40.
- 1:20:17To Nottingham straight ahead. He's got the first down, battling his way forward to the Miami 44-yard line.
- 1:20:22Nottingham feels through a pretty good hole and is pulled down by John Gutten with the Miami 44 where it's first down.
- 1:20:30I don't think Schrock's thrown on first, Chuck. He's up in the middle of the field.
- 1:20:35He did on first I think when we had the interception.
- 1:20:38When Ronnie had penetrated it to 35. But since then they've run the ball inside the tackles mostly on first down.
- 1:20:45Jully has set out wide to the left side of the Miami set. Moore the other way, waiting for Don Schrock to get that stat from Langer.
- 1:20:52Yanks it away. A shallow drop, Locker throw, fires outside. It is caught by Matt Moore and down he goes with Mumford making the tackle of the Miami 48-yard line.
- 1:21:02And I'll tell you there was a little feeling in there with Mumford and Moore.
- 1:21:06There's one on the Miami set where he used to sit. He's happy to be here.
- 1:21:13Speaking of Matt Moore, let's take a look at the pass receiving. He caught three for 36 to the first half.
- 1:21:19The only doll for the catch when he passes the first half.
- 1:21:22Shester, Mitchell, Carr, Dowdy and McCauley all calling for the coach. No score in the third quarter.
- 1:21:27Early moment Schrock gives to Morris a left end sweep. He turns the corner and his hits get about the 50 falling forward to the Baltimore 49-yard line.
- 1:21:34It looks like Sam White among others along with Bruce Laird and the big guy John Dutton.
- 1:21:39And Morris has now come up to about the Baltimore 49-yard line again of three, third and three.
- 1:21:50Culley is now going to the sideline and he'll probably offer that double tight end offense.
- 1:22:01Big game. Third down, about three.
- 1:22:04Dowdingham and Morris are setbacks behind quarterback Don Schrock.
- 1:22:09Waiting for the take away. He fakes, hands off, wants to throw, a deep drop, sets, firing deep, all alone and he can't get it as Mumford's broken up.
- 1:22:16That boy was all alone and Mumford came up and made a very good defensive play to stop the Dolphins on third and three.
- 1:22:23Super play. Schrock hit him at just the right time.
- 1:22:26It was the same kind of play that Miami's number 41, Jaris White, had made against Carr at the other end of the field.
- 1:22:37Perfect timing. Forcing a punt.
- 1:22:40And Seipel is on the punt, waiting at the 10-yard line. Howard Stevens, shallow safeties along the 25, Ray Oldham and Marshall Johnson waiting for the snap for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:22:52All ready to go. There's the snap. It's okay. Here comes the punt. Seipel hits it. Not as good. He almost missed this one.
- 1:22:59It's going to hit on the Baltimore 20. Bouncing around, down by the Miami Dolphins at about the 16-15-yard line by Barry Hill.
- 1:23:07They walk it back out to nearer the 18. When they put the ball down, we'll let you know where it is.
- 1:23:13Right in the middle of the couple of knots.
- 1:23:17First down to the Baltimore 18. No score in Baltimore. The Dolphins and the Colts.
- 1:23:23The Dolphins, the established championship caliber football team playing against almost superhuman odds this year with one injury after another.
- 1:23:31Right where they have been year after year. The Colts are trying to get there for the first time.
- 1:23:36And they have not been able to move it too well against Miami so far. The Gibson Mitchell, right side. No hold.
- 1:23:42It doesn't open. He has hit it to Linus Grimmage and stopped goals.
- 1:23:46Bob Matheson, the linebacker, knifing in. Gen Herder is underneath the pile. Let's see who the last man up.
- 1:23:52It's going to be that number 56 Steve Toll.
- 1:23:56They mark it at the 19. Second down, nine. Baltimore after 19.
- 1:24:02Look at these Cleveland Browns rolling up over. You talked about a club that's had injury problems.
- 1:24:06Kansas City on the short end of a 33 to nothing score in the fourth quarter with Cleveland leading.
- 1:24:12Second to nine. Double flank, wide right side. Doughty and Carr take away. Jones-Sake rolls back to goal.
- 1:24:18Looks to find a receiver. Now drops it off to Bill Oles with the 20 to the 25 outside.
- 1:24:23On his feet at the 30 and up he goes to about the 33 yard line.
- 1:24:26A fine catch by Bill Oles and a better run. First down Baltimore after all 33 or 4.
- 1:24:32Jarrett White knocking out.
- 1:24:34Now when Lydell isn't running the ball or attacking it, he's blocking as he did on that play to help Bill Oles gain the extra yardage for the first down.
- 1:24:43They have spotted the ball at the cold 33 yard line. 14 yards.
- 1:24:51Doughty wheels out of the huddle coming off to the right side. Now there's some confusion. Here goes Carr out to the left side of the set.
- 1:24:57Doughty to the right side and we've got Bill Oles and right over to shoulder to shoulder in the standard road set.
- 1:25:02First down at the 33. Take away by Jones. No fake. Lost the goal. A shallow drop. Quick pass.
- 1:25:06Carr. Doughty drops it after he caught the ball. They're fighting for possession and it's going to be ruled dead.
- 1:25:12It is not going to be a caught pass, a completed pass. It will be an incompleted pass.
- 1:25:16Doughty had it just for a quick second and the hit knocked him free of the football.
- 1:25:21Oh, was it a hit? Oh my.
- 1:25:25Cole, Eddie and Cole hurts more than Doughty. If colors gate will tell you anything.
- 1:25:30Well, as Doughty is the first guy to tell you this, nobody ever told you it was going to be easy.
- 1:25:35Second down in Jennifer 33. Baltimore nothing, Miami nothing.
- 1:25:40From the third quarter, 1052 remaining. A great day for a football game on the biggest crowd ever in Memorial Stadium's history to see a football game.
- 1:25:4760,548. They oversold by 310.
- 1:25:52High formation on second down and motion Doughty toward the backfield.
- 1:25:56Pitch out to Mitchell. Sweeping to left side. Makes the cut and Mitchell is hit.
- 1:25:59It's hit good by Powell, the middle linebacker at about the 34 yard line of the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:26:03And there's a Colt very slow to get up again.
- 1:26:06We are taking a look to figure out who it is. It's still Glenn Doughty slowly getting up.
- 1:26:13The game is to the 34 yard line where it is third down and nine.
- 1:26:18The Colts defense or offensive unit just not able to handle the defensive unit of the Miami Dousers.
- 1:26:23And the same thing was true of Miami. They have not yet been able to handle the Colts defensive unit.
- 1:26:29So defense has been the name of the game. It comes as no surprise in a scoreless ball game.
- 1:26:33Third and nine. From the 34, Carlisle Doughty right.
- 1:26:37Take away by Jones. Great drop. Looking, looking. Now set. Now rolls out of it.
- 1:26:40Looking again. He ducks back in the pocket. Bounces to his right.
- 1:26:43It's being chased. And Jones' fire sets from the upfield. It's going to be incomplete.
- 1:26:47Jones is having a lot of trouble picking up his receivers.
- 1:26:51And the reason he is is the very fine defensive play of the deep four of the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:26:58Yeah, he's getting good pressure, but the fellas in the deep people defending, playing excellent football.
- 1:27:06So we have to kick it. And they have blocked it the last time we've won it.
- 1:27:10We're close a few other times.
- 1:27:12And for the first time today, Vince, they do not mount a ten-man rush.
- 1:27:15They have a return onto the Dolphins. Matt Moore in the middle of the triumphant of the safety men.
- 1:27:19Jake Scott on the near sideline. Charlie Babb on the far sideline.
- 1:27:22Waiting for the snap to David Lee. Perfect. Now the putt.
- 1:27:25He takes his time. Hits it in over and here comes Matt Moore up to the Dolphin 28.
- 1:27:29Humbled it. Fighting for possession. He's got it. Bounces clear.
- 1:27:33Four to the 30. To the 35. And out of bounds goes Matt Moore.
- 1:27:41And helping him up is Dan White, who was over there along with Matt to help knock him out of bounds.
- 1:27:46Moore a little slow getting up. He's all right. Stands it. Everything is okay, kid.
- 1:27:49And there's a Baltimore cold down on the field.
- 1:27:52And there is a break in the action and we'll pause now for this message.
- 1:27:58A record four players were chosen from the Oklahoma Sooners for the All-American team,
- 1:28:03named by the Walter Camp Foundation. That's the football foundation.
- 1:28:07Sooners placed three defensive stalwarts on the 24-man squad.
- 1:28:10They are Ann Jimbo Elrod, plus Leroy and Dewey Stillman.
- 1:28:15Offensive guard Terry Webb also was selected to the team.
- 1:28:18Of the 17 universities represented, only four other schools, Ohio State, Penn State, California,
- 1:28:24and Texas A&M had more than one player chosen.
- 1:28:28The top ranked Buckeyes placed two-time Heisman Trophy winner,
- 1:28:31Iche Griffin and defensive back Tim Fox from the squad.
- 1:28:35Linebacker Greg Buttle and kicker Chris Barr were chosen from the eighth ranked Nittany Lions.
- 1:28:41Meanwhile, running back Chuck Muncie and wide receiver Steve Rivera
- 1:28:47were selected from 16th ranked California.
- 1:28:50And the sixth ranked Aggies were represented by linebacker Ed Salmoniti
- 1:28:55and defensive back Pat Tarmis.
- 1:28:58The injured Baltimore Colts being held to the sideline is Freddy Scott.
- 1:29:05It appears to be a leg hurt.
- 1:29:07Statistically, here's some information prepared by Tommy Davis about the Baltimore Colts defensive unit.
- 1:29:13They have shut out the opposition over six straight quarters, including the first half of today's game.
- 1:29:19Also have shut out their opponents.
- 1:29:21In 10 of the last 12 quarters the Colts have played.
- 1:29:25They have shut out their opponents going all the way back to the second half of the Miami Dolphins game in Miami.
- 1:29:31First down Miami at the Miami 37 yard line.
- 1:29:35Take away by Strachan. First down, watch the throw pressure coming.
- 1:29:38For the screen man, Don Nottingham, up to the 40, to the 45, open at the 50, into Baltimore territory.
- 1:29:43Down by Jackie Wallace at the Baltimore 44 yard line.
- 1:29:48First down from the Miami 35, a screen to Nottingham, and the Miami Dolphins blew the Colts right off the field
- 1:29:54for a first down at the Baltimore 45.
- 1:29:57Twenty yards on the play. Since we said Strachan had been throwing on first, he's done it on the next two series,
- 1:30:02including that screen to Nottingham.
- 1:30:06He may be a rookie, untested quarterback, but in a pressure-laden ballgame, he looks like he's been doing it every week for quite a few years.
- 1:30:13First down, Baltimore 45 in motion fully through the Dolphin backfield of the far sideline.
- 1:30:18Take away by Strachan. He hands it off to Mercury, trying to swing the left end.
- 1:30:22They plug it up. He tries to reverse the field and can't get anywhere,
- 1:30:25as the Colts, Goose, Laird, and John Dutton are all over him right along the Baltimore 47 or 8 yard line.
- 1:30:32That's the play Dutton made, backing up the opposition's stutter step from Mercury, and John Dutton is a lot taller
- 1:30:38and stayed right with him with the steps and made the defensive play possible.
- 1:30:43Well, he read it very well, and Dutton had a heck of a jump and reacted beautifully.
- 1:30:47And now, instead of Merck Morris in that backfield, number 32 Benny Malone has come on for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:30:53Some of it runs as though he doesn't know which way his legs are going, and is he an effective runner?
- 1:30:59They also have Blouac in there as a setback alongside of Benny Malone, second and 14 at the Baltimore 49,
- 1:31:05waiting for the snap. Whoops, Stock broke the snap count. The ball didn't come.
- 1:31:09Strach moved, and the flags were dropped all over the place.
- 1:31:12It's an illegal procedure for a back in motion penalty against the Miami.
- 1:31:18Must be kind of embarrassing, huh, to be in on the center, give them the snap count, move away, and the ball's not there.
- 1:31:25Well, 10 other guys were wrong, you have to think. I guess so.
- 1:31:29I guess that's the sort of thing that you get with timing. He hasn't snapped the ball very long from Langer.
- 1:31:35He has played very well, though.
- 1:31:37Stock, the youngster from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
- 1:31:40He really has. He's been just an outstanding quarterback in some very tough football games.
- 1:31:46Last week against Buffalo, this week against Baltimore, second down and 19 at the bar.
- 1:31:49It's the Miami 46. Stock yanks it away, wants it on the reverse. He gives it to Malone.
- 1:31:53Malone around the right end, good blocking, and is hit by Malone, by number 52, McLeod,
- 1:31:58and taken down right about at the Baltimore 48-yard line.
- 1:32:02Boy, that fellow's a good, slashing type of a runner, is Benny Malone.
- 1:32:06He sure is, and those crazy legs it is.
- 1:32:09They've bonded at the Baltimore Colt 48-yard line, and it is now third down and 13 for Miami,
- 1:32:16and in the early going of the second half, one of the more important plays facing the Baltimore defense.
- 1:32:20Mike Barnes drops out, and you add Ray Oldham.
- 1:32:23Sometimes the Colts drop a linebacker in this third and passing situation.
- 1:32:27Sometimes they drop a tackle. Now they've dropped a linebacker.
- 1:32:30The Colts seem a little bit confused offensively momentarily. Now they're set.
- 1:32:34Third and 13 for the Baltimore 48.
- 1:32:37Take away by Stock, a shallow drop. Quarterback draw. He runs it out of there.
- 1:32:40He's down to the 40. On his feet, and it's the 30-yard line.
- 1:32:43A pull down inside the Baltimore 30-yard line goes quarterback Don Stock,
- 1:32:47and what a heck of a call. A quarterback draw, and Stock runs the first down inside the Baltimore 30.
- 1:32:54Fantastic call. Exactly. He called it. I mean, this wasn't a broken play.
- 1:32:59He ran a quarterback draw. Drop back, pressure was coming.
- 1:33:02Got between the initial people who were pressuring him, and made a first down at the 29.
- 1:33:09And now back in that backfield again, Nottingham and Merck Morris.
- 1:33:13Wide to the left side, fully to the right side, and that more.
- 1:33:16Stock fumbled the football, picked it up and starts running with it, and Freddy Cook eats him up,
- 1:33:20grabs the football, but it has been whistled dead or has it?
- 1:33:23No, Miami still has the football.
- 1:33:26Freddy Cook, first to quarterback Stock, took the ball away from him,
- 1:33:30and the ball has been whistled dead prior to that event.
- 1:33:37Nobody can question that because only the guys in the field heard that whistle,
- 1:33:40so who can say what it was called then?
- 1:33:43They gained a yard to boot. The Colts aren't complaining too much.
- 1:33:46Initial reaction was a little violent.
- 1:33:49That's the second time in the last series of plays that the Dolphins have had just a little mix-up
- 1:33:54of their staff on the ball handling from their center and their quarterback, Stock.
- 1:33:58Now they chase number 86, Freddy Solomon, wide to the right side of the set.
- 1:34:04And we have again Nottingham and Morris.
- 1:34:06Here comes Solomon in motion through the Dolphin backfield of the near sideline.
- 1:34:10Stock takes it away without a fake, rolls back, wants to throw, has time,
- 1:34:13now rolls out, gets away from one man, gets away from a second, throws,
- 1:34:17and it's incomplete and Fennie for Solomon at about the 15-yard line of the Colts.
- 1:34:21Finally, he's got a little pressure on quarterback Stock.
- 1:34:24Joe Airman and John Dutton were there, but they couldn't wrap him up.
- 1:34:27That's the Dolphins, third down and nine of the Colts, 28.
- 1:34:40Third down and still about nine yards for the Dolphins.
- 1:34:43Ray Oldham now replaces at last time on the passing situation,
- 1:34:47he replaced middle line backer Chayenne.
- 1:34:49Rather he replaced Barnes, the defensive tackle.
- 1:34:52Now he replaces middle line backer Chayenne. Third down and nine at about the 28.
- 1:34:58Seifel has set out wide to this near sideline.
- 1:35:02Solomon the other way, the only man behind the quarterback is Goulash.
- 1:35:05Stock misses the snap count again and the penalty flags are dropped all over the place.
- 1:35:11And again the Miami quarterback has had, this is the third time, to empty that problem
- 1:35:15with the snap count and the snap from center to quarterback.
- 1:35:23Langer's just holding the ball.
- 1:35:25The stock is backing away and as soon as he moves the Colts have blast in on him.
- 1:35:31Langer has the ball which means the stock doesn't know the count that he has called.
- 1:35:38Well these are the kind of mistakes that can be very, very costly.
- 1:35:43I don't know whether crowd noise has any bearing on it. It could be.
- 1:35:47It's just the kind of a thing that is upsetting and I'm sure the more often it happens to the stock,
- 1:35:52the more he thinks about it, the more difficult the situation becomes.
- 1:35:55Third and 14 at the Baltimore 33.
- 1:35:59Waiting for the snap from center to Don Strock again.
- 1:36:01He's got it this time. Back to drill, pressure coming, rolls to his left, out of the clear, sets up,
- 1:36:06and fires upfield. It's going to be incomplete. Larry Seifel drops it at the Baltimore 18.
- 1:36:12So they'll try another field goal, or will they? This is too far maybe.
- 1:36:22I don't see that fellow with the necktie.
- 1:36:24I see a 50 yarder.
- 1:36:26And that fellow with the necktie, Gary Iprimian, is staying on the side.
- 1:36:30And on fourth down I guess Seifel will try to put it in the corner.
- 1:36:34Well let's see whether Mr. Seifel does what he did a couple of times in pressure football games from the past.
- 1:36:39He runs that football. You better believe he can run that football.
- 1:36:44The wide people for us aren't aware that they're not looking at him anyway.
- 1:36:47Already we're waiting for this punt if it develops, and it probably will.
- 1:36:51Stevens is very shallow. They figure that maybe he might want to run it.
- 1:36:54He waits for pressure. Now here comes his kick angle to the near sideline.
- 1:36:57The Colts are going to let it hit. It hits and goes into the end zone.
- 1:37:00The Colts will have a cut back and first down at their own 20 yard line.
- 1:37:04Hey there's a time out here in Baltimore. We'll be back in 60 seconds.
- 1:37:09Taking the scoreboard again, we have some more scores.
- 1:37:14Buffalo pouring it on New England now.
- 1:37:18Braxton going one yard for a touchdown. The extra point was good, 20 to 7.
- 1:37:23Then O.J. Simpson ran 63 yards. It's still in the third quarter.
- 1:37:28Extra point again was good. That made the score 27 to 7, Buffalo.
- 1:37:33And still yet in the fourth quarter, Morangy throws a touchdown pass to Hill
- 1:37:41covering 41 yards again. The conversion was good.
- 1:37:44And in the fourth period, it's 34-7, Buffalo over New England.
- 1:37:49Now at Atlanta, the Falcons have scored again.
- 1:37:54Francis 31 yard pass from stand back, extra point by Mikkelmeyer, good.
- 1:37:5931 to 9, Atlanta over the 49ers. This is in the fourth period.
- 1:38:04Halftime, St. Louis Cardinals 17 and the Chicago Bears nothing.
- 1:38:10Well the punt from Larry Seifel is sent for a coffin corner,
- 1:38:17rolled to the end zone. Baltimore goes to earth, first down at their 20 yard line.
- 1:38:21We have 639 remaining in the third quarter. No score.
- 1:38:25Mitchell and O.J. setbacks behind Jones, double flank wide left.
- 1:38:29The gift of Mitchell sweep on the right side.
- 1:38:31Bakes in, cuts out, and is caught and pulled down by the linebacker on that side, Doug Swift.
- 1:38:36And he may have lost a yard or two as Mitchell has not been able to get outside.
- 1:38:41You know Chuck, the first time really he's tried to get outside,
- 1:38:44and they've had no success running straight at him where they had the success the earlier game in Miami.
- 1:38:49And I figure on first down that time they'd fake it inside or give the feeling that they were going inside,
- 1:38:54trying to get him outside, and it was worse. Four people tackled him.
- 1:38:58I'll tell you, that's a very well-schooled, experienced, solid defensive unit that the Miami Dolphins can show you.
- 1:39:06Now here's Dowdy in motion coming through the cold backfield from the left side to the right side.
- 1:39:10Splitbacks, nobody behind Jones. Back to throw goes to Baltimore.
- 1:39:13Quarterback pressure coming, and he fires the screen to Bill Oles and it's incomplete.
- 1:39:17They had a blitz on, firing in with linebacker Doug Swift on cold quarterback Burt Jones.
- 1:39:23And he hurried the screen pass. It goes incomplete, bringing up third down and 12.
- 1:39:27And do they screen their defenses, and do they screen that blitz?
- 1:39:32Oh yeah, they talk about well-schooled math.
- 1:39:36And then he's playing with some young people too, Toll and Crowder, their young football players.
- 1:39:42Jaris White.
- 1:39:45Now this is just one of the more successful football teams of recent years, these Miami Dolphins.
- 1:39:51And they are battling the Colts to a scoreless deadlock as we come up third down and 12.
- 1:39:55The Baltimore Colts with their own 18. Jones yanks it away, rolls to his left, wants to throw fire down the middle.
- 1:40:01It is incomplete, intending for Raymond Chester at about the 31-yard line, covering with Charlie Babb on the Colts.
- 1:40:07We kick it away, and Jones is not having a good day.
- 1:40:11In the first half, Jones did not have the kind of an afternoon he wanted to have.
- 1:40:16He was in passing, Jones threw the ball 15 times, completed 9 for 93 yards.
- 1:40:22And now he has thrown the ball 20 times, completing 10.
- 1:40:27And the reason he is not having the kind of a day that Burt would like to have is twofold.
- 1:40:31One, the injury I think does restrict him somewhat.
- 1:40:34And secondly, it's been a heck of a good defensive effort from the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:40:39Waiting at the 35, Nat Moore. Here comes the kick from David Lee, end over end.
- 1:40:42He didn't get it the way he wanted it. Moore's got it at the Miami 45, laterally along the 45.
- 1:40:47Makes the cut, up to the Baltimore 40, down to the Baltimore 30. Moore has taken off his feet there.
- 1:40:52And he is down at about the 27-yard line on the guy who did it with Sam White.
- 1:40:57Had to do it. There was only one man left. Time out.
- 1:40:59And there was a time out here in Baltimore with a score. The Dolphins nothing and Baltimore nothing.
- 1:41:05Other happenings in sports today. Marquette coach Al McGuire has insisted from the beginning of the college basketball season
- 1:41:16that DePaul may be a sleeper in the Midwest this season.
- 1:41:20As it turned out, McGuire proved to be a good profit.
- 1:41:23DePaul shocked seventh-ranked Louisville last night, breaking the Cardinal 24-game home court winning streak with a 78-76 triumph.
- 1:41:32McGuire will get a chance to see DePaul close up early next year.
- 1:41:36Second-ranked Marquette Warriors visit DePaul next month.
- 1:41:39And the Chicago school travels to Milwaukee in February.
- 1:41:43In between, DePaul will test its giant killer ability against the fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
- 1:41:51Here's some of the top teams spared in basketball over the weekend.
- 1:41:54Number one, Indiana, beat fired to state 83-59. Then one over Notre Dame, 63-60.
- 1:42:01Marquette number two, as we said, beat great, 80-58. Number three, Maryland beat Boston University and also Georgia Tech.
- 1:42:10Now the Miami Dolphins will have been in the cold backyard entirely of the second half, 534 remaining in the third.
- 1:42:15First down of the cold 30 in motion 20.
- 1:42:17Georgia's own backfield struck. Jitsa Nottingham burst off the left side on his hit crossing the 25 and pulled down and held by Stan White.
- 1:42:24The attendance this afternoon is 60,548 sold. Those were tickets sold and distributed.
- 1:42:32In the ballpark, 59,398. That means we have 1,150 no shows.
- 1:42:43So the 24-yard line, second down and sixth Miami at that spot.
- 1:42:46And the Baltimore cold 24-yard line.
- 1:42:49The takeaway to get to Nottingham, swings to his left, gets the block and Stan White stacks him up and down he goes at about the 24-yard line.
- 1:42:57Stan White just would not be taken out of the play and got the bowling ball and just stood him up and he's a tough guy to take on one and one.
- 1:43:05Met him chest to chest on that one, Chuck. Good center of gravity. Stan White's got a stocky individual himself. Good play.
- 1:43:14Big play here. Every play's a big play. Scores game 447 left third period.
- 1:43:20You just can't count on your premium to continually miss field goals. That's all there is to it.
- 1:43:25Third down and sixth at the 24-yard line. Strzok now comes around in a passing formation, a double wing.
- 1:43:31The only man behind the quarterback is Bluock Strzok. Takes it away, rolls back the throw, has plenty of time, fires his pass and is caught between two cold defenders and the flag goes down.
- 1:43:41The man who caught it was Larry Seipel and a penalty flag has been dropped at the 15-yard line.
- 1:43:48And we'll see what this is all about. The flag has been dropped.
- 1:43:54Seipel knifed between two Baltimore cold defenders and made the catch.
- 1:43:59And the referee says interference Baltimore. First down.
- 1:44:07The catch was made anyway and there's no further damage with the ball now at the 17.
- 1:44:13It didn't prevent the catch with the interference.
- 1:44:19Deepest they've been.
- 1:44:22Well, it's just, you know, it seems like it's only a matter of time. They've had it down in the center of the field throughout this third quarter.
- 1:44:27Have the Dolphins and have still not been able to score.
- 1:44:29To Bluock, down through the right side all the way to the Baltimore 10-yard line goes Blu and Bruce Laird is able to ride him down with Lloyd Mumford's help.
- 1:44:36That's about the Baltimore 10-yard line.
- 1:44:38And the defensive unit of the Baltimore Colts has been on the field for quite a little while here in this third quarter.
- 1:44:44And Miami is just bringing it to them.
- 1:44:48Second down and three now at the Baltimore 10-yard line.
- 1:44:54As they come out with Bluock and Murk Morris, the setbacks behind the quarterback Don Strzok.
- 1:44:59Waiting for that takeaway. Strzok's got it.
- 1:45:00Gifts to Morris down the middle into the Baltimore 5 and he has held up the 5-yard line. But a first down and goal to go for the Dolphins at the Baltimore 5.
- 1:45:16Now Buffalo is leading New England 34 to 14 in the fourth quarter.
- 1:45:20Cleveland Browns having a great day. They lead Kansas City 40 to 7 in the fourth quarter.
- 1:45:24Right now Miami has just climbed right up on that touchdown platform. They are five yards away.
- 1:45:30With Bluock and Murk Morris as a setback behind the quarterback Don Strzok.
- 1:45:35Takeaway by Strzok. The Bluock straight ahead and he is held at about the 3-yard line.
- 1:45:41Nothing fancy, just a straight die play from Bluock.
- 1:45:44Three more pops though. First down, gains a couple. Put it on the 3 and it'll have a goal to go on second.
- 1:45:50And here comes Nottingham in and Bluock goes to the sideline.
- 1:45:57The ball spotted at about the Baltimore 4.
- 1:46:01Great punt return by Nat Moore.
- 1:46:05Kept this Miami Dolphins off on the cold end of the field all through this third quarter.
- 1:46:09Morris and Nottingham setbacks behind quarterback Strzok.
- 1:46:13Second and goal to the Baltimore 4.
- 1:46:15Waiting for the takeaway, it goes to Morris, swinging to his right, makes his cut, hit it about the 2 and down he goes.
- 1:46:21Morris did not get in and an attempted sweep of the right side.
- 1:46:24It looked like Jackie Wallace was there to make the tackle.
- 1:46:29It'll be third down, goal to go and the ball is being spotted around the Baltimore cold 2.
- 1:46:38Nottingham to the sideline, Bluock into the huddle for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:46:42No score, time remaining, 2-23 in the third quarter in Baltimore.
- 1:46:47A scoreless ball game.
- 1:46:49Again, Bluock, Strzok, Morris shoulder to shoulder in a standard process backfield.
- 1:46:54Third and goal to the Baltimore 2.
- 1:46:56The turn, the gift to Morris to the left side, outside he goes.
- 1:46:59Mercury is in for the score.
- 1:47:04Morris has swept the left end and has gone in for the score.
- 1:47:10Two yards away from the goal line, he put the ball over his head as if it was much to say,
- 1:47:14I see it coming, I see the line, nobody can get me.
- 1:47:17And they didn't, as Nelson Muncie made a late bid to bring him down.
- 1:47:24Well, it was kind of just a matter of time as the Dolphins handled the ball in cold territory.
- 1:47:33Two of the three times they've had it in the third quarter, they were in the Baltimore cold end of the field.
- 1:47:37They had to snap, the kick is in the air, but the kick is good,
- 1:47:40and the Dolphins go out in front of the Baltimore Colts by a score of 7-0.
- 1:47:44We hope that our troops around the world are enjoying today's game
- 1:47:47and now being broadcast on 300 stations of the American Forces Radio Network.
- 1:47:51For those stations and our flagship station, WCBM in Baltimore,
- 1:47:55we pause now 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:47:58This is the Metro Media, Baltimore Colts football network.
- 1:48:02This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 1:48:07At 790 and 1420, this is American Forces Radio.
- 1:48:12That's the end of our time.
- 1:48:17Well, we've got the punt returning of Matt Moore, I think is very, very important in this ball game so far.
- 1:48:25On the punt when Baltimore came up fourth and 12 with a roll 18,
- 1:48:28David Lee punted and Moore brought it all the way back to the Baltimore 28.
- 1:48:32And from there it was the, not easy, but it was a lot more, less difficult for Miami to work it in.
- 1:48:38And Matt has returned a couple of punts exceptionally well for the Miami Dolphins today,
- 1:48:43who now lead Baltimore 7-0 with 2-0-7 remaining in the third quarter,
- 1:48:47and your premium will kick it off to the little guy Howard Stevens down on the goal line now.
- 1:48:53And coming up on the ball, Don McCauley I believe fumbles the ball, goes back, recovers,
- 1:48:57heads it to the 20, to the 25, and whacky gutted in between the 25 and the 30 yard line,
- 1:49:02held onto the football at about the 29.
- 1:49:04Bruce Elia was among others, and we may have a penalty here.
- 1:49:08It looked like the preliminary call was face masking, you know,
- 1:49:11snapping on that guard in front of the mask and pulling the man down.
- 1:49:14And that's exactly what did happen, so the Colts get better field position to work with.
- 1:49:20In this half of the ball game, the Colts had the ball.
- 1:49:23At the roll 18, and a pass to Olves, took him out to the 33, they got it out to the 34 and had to kick it away.
- 1:49:29The next time the Colts had the ball, they couldn't move it, in truth they lost yardage, and had to kick it away.
- 1:49:34Now here is the third time that the Colts have had the football in this third quarter,
- 1:49:38and the ball is resting at the Baltimore Colts 33.
- 1:49:42Get it only five yards because it wasn't a flagrant violation of the face mask.
- 1:49:461.57 in the third quarter, standard pro set backfield behind Burt Jones,
- 1:49:50waiting for the take away, Jones gives to Mitchell into the middle, it doesn't give,
- 1:49:53he's maybe got two yards as the Miami Dolphins defensive unit,
- 1:49:57smart, agile, and able just to shut off any kind of a running route that Mitchell might be able to enjoy.
- 1:50:03He picks up maybe two, call a second down, eight Baltimore at their own 35.
- 1:50:09After the ball game, we have the offensive and defensive players of the week for the Colts,
- 1:50:12and we'll announce them during the locker room report right after this afternoon's game.
- 1:50:16Miami gaining one of the other little shades that indicates that maybe that great football player,
- 1:50:22Mr. Moe, Moe Metam is swinging a bit to Miami,
- 1:50:26it's what they're able to do to Baltimore on first down.
- 1:50:28Back to throw with Jones, he fires to the sideline,
- 1:50:31caught by Dowdy and out of bounds at the Baltimore 42 yard line, it is not a first down.
- 1:50:37He got about eight.
- 1:50:39Miami of course gains more confidence, the better they play defensively,
- 1:50:43the winner's just shutting them off on first down when they come up second and eighth, second and ninth.
- 1:50:48And Miami comes up second and five, second and four.
- 1:50:52The Lions are leading the ball game, the reason for the lead, seven up in Miami.
- 1:50:57It is third down at about a yard, Baltimore at the Baltimore 42, Dowdy wide to the right side,
- 1:51:03double tight ends around there now with Don McCauley and Bill Olds, the setbacks behind quarterback Jones.
- 1:51:09Waiting for the take away, Burke spins, Hanson McCauley sweeping the right side, makes the cut,
- 1:51:13he is, I don't know, he's close to it, he may have first down yardage, he's very close,
- 1:51:18but he may not be quite far enough up field, he's within about a yard of it and racing up to make the tackle,
- 1:51:23Charlie Babb and also winning the tackle that looks like Jaros White is there,
- 1:51:26and McCauley's attempt to sweep at the right end did not get a first down.
- 1:51:31And this is not the spot of the field, certainly where you want to take a shot at it.
- 1:51:35Now we'll measure Chuck, Pat Haggerty, the referee calling for the six, but it looks like he's almost a yard short from here
- 1:51:41and we've got a pretty good lookout.
- 1:51:43Now wouldn't that be embarrassing if they measure and he's got a first down?
- 1:51:49Then all I can say is they've got a crooked field.
- 1:51:53He's missed it by considerably.
- 1:51:55Fourth down coming to the Baltimore Colts at their own 32.
- 1:51:59Check that at the 42.
- 1:52:02Now the eager beavers in the stands are saying go, go, go, but they wouldn't do that.
- 1:52:08Well I see Jake Scott back to return, the point of wonder what happened to Nat Moore.
- 1:52:12He's been doing a sensational job and here he comes right now.
- 1:52:14He's coming on field and they have two of them back there to help out.
- 1:52:17Charlie Babb goes back there with Nat Moore.
- 1:52:20Moore has been a very, very excellent punt return man for the Dolphins this afternoon
- 1:52:25and his returns have proved kind of tough on the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:52:29As the Dolphins lead it to 7-0 with a minute and 4 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:52:33Here is David Lee's punt.
- 1:52:36So Charlie Babb or Nat Moore waiting for that snap.
- 1:52:38Stan White, the signal caller, looking over.
- 1:52:43Now we're about ready to go.
- 1:52:44Here comes the snap and the punt.
- 1:52:46David Lee hits a beautiful, booming deep spiral.
- 1:52:49Back goes Nat Moore inside the 10.
- 1:52:51He's got it at 10, laterally along that 10, makes a shot, goes outside,
- 1:52:55leads through a hole for Tackler and is pulled off his pins at a about-19-yard line by Bob Pratt.
- 1:53:01And a flag goes down.
- 1:53:04Boy, that fellow Moore made a cut and came through and looked like three of the Baltimore Colts' tacklers
- 1:53:08and then Pratt got there and yanked him off his pins.
- 1:53:13Nat Moore wide receiver from Florida and there's a penalty flag and it's a face mask.
- 1:53:21And they're even in that area.
- 1:53:25Face mask against the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:53:26And now, you know, the very well-disciplined experience.
- 1:53:31Miami Dolphins are playing just a lot better football right now than are the young and inexperienced Baltimore Colts.
- 1:53:37First down, Miami.
- 1:53:39Now the ball is spotted at the Miami 23 rather than at the 18.
- 1:53:44Nat Moore wide to the left side, out on the right side is Foody.
- 1:53:48quarterback field no man behind quarterback Don Strzok.
- 1:53:51He is still a barking signal to the Miami quarterback for takeaway.
- 1:53:55He busted play running out to his left from Strzok.
- 1:53:58He gets a little bit of a block and then gets hit and hit hard by Nelson Muncie, John Dutton, Joe Airman, and Stan White.
- 1:54:04And Strzok is able to take that punishment at about the 27-yard line of the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:54:10Strzok a lanky kind of a guy, 6'5".
- 1:54:15But that's the first real shot they've had.
- 1:54:18And he weighs about 220.
- 1:54:21Well, he's got a 7-0 lead, has Strzok, and the Dolphins.
- 1:54:24And we're down to about the final play.
- 1:54:26We're not going to get another play in the third quarter.
- 1:54:28It's going to be over before the Dolphins can move the football again.
- 1:54:31And there goes the gun.
- 1:54:33And that's the end of the third quarter with our score.
- 1:54:36Miami 7, Baltimore nothing.
- 1:54:41On the hatback, Willie Shelby and three other persons were slightly injured Sunday in a two-car collision on Alabama 11.
- 1:54:50That's near Tuscaloosa.
- 1:54:52A highway patrol spokesman said Shelby, a senior on the Crimson Tide Southeastern Conference champion team,
- 1:54:58was bruised a little and maybe cut on one leg, but it shouldn't affect him for the sugar ball.
- 1:55:03Shelby was not hospitalized and did not go to a doctor.
- 1:55:07The two other persons were taken to a Tuscaloosa hospital where they were treated and released.
- 1:55:13Identities of others in the accident were not released.
- 1:55:16Alabama faces Penn State in the sugar ball, December 31 in New Orleans.
- 1:55:20In the final score in the National Football League, the Buffalo Bills have beaten the New England Patriots today by a score of 34 to 14.
- 1:55:29The Cardinals have hit again in the third period against Chicago, Bakken's 29-yard field goal in the third quarter,
- 1:55:37score now St. Louis Cardinals 20, Chicago bears nothing.
- 1:55:41Well, right now we get to the fourth quarter in Baltimore with the Dolphins leading by a count of 7-0.
- 1:55:49It will be second-to-six Miami at their own 27.
- 1:55:52And the Dolphins who shut out the Bills, 21-0 through the first half last week,
- 1:55:56have shut the Baltimore Colts out through three quarters this afternoon.
- 1:56:00And this is a Colts football team that has been averaging 29-plus points per game.
- 1:56:05And the Dolphins have called shut them out. The Colts have not even come close to scoring on Miami.
- 1:56:10Their only effort was a 30-yard field goal by Linhart, and that was not good.
- 1:56:16Second-down, sixth Miami at the Miami 27-yard line.
- 1:56:20Solomon has set out, no, it's Nat Moore wide to the right side and fully the other way.
- 1:56:24Nottingham and Morris setbacks to 9-strock.
- 1:56:27Waiting for the takeaway, he gives to Morris on a draw.
- 1:56:30Morris nights his way ahead for maybe a yard.
- 1:56:32He just kind of stuttered around waiting for daylight to open.
- 1:56:35It didn't get there because the fellow who got there to plug it up was John Dutton.
- 1:56:39Again, is held to about a yard.
- 1:56:41Third-down, five, now Miami at the 28.
- 1:56:45And we've got Rick Volk coming into the game.
- 1:56:51Chuck, he hasn't been in a serious down, I guess, for a long time for Chayun.
- 1:56:56Well, Chayunsky drops out and Rick Volk has come on in, replacing Ray Oldham, whose knee might be bothering him a good little bit.
- 1:57:03Footback field between Boulos and Seifel.
- 1:57:06At quarterback, Don Strzok waiting for the snap from Langer.
- 1:57:09Still waiting, he's got it. A straight drop on the reverse to Boulos around his left end.
- 1:57:13Boulos is up to the 30 and out of bounds at about the 33 yard line, and he might have first-down yardage.
- 1:57:19He's going to be very close to it if he didn't make it.
- 1:57:24A reverse and a sweep of the left end by Boulos, and he appears to have a first down.
- 1:57:30Dolphins now first down at the Dolphin 34 yard line, leading by a score of 7-0.
- 1:57:46The second half of the ballgame has been completely dominated by the Dolphins.
- 1:57:51Footback field to give to Morris, starts for the right side, makes the cut, and down he goes to the 35 yard line.
- 1:57:57A penalty flag thrown into a pileup from 15 yards downfield.
- 1:58:01And that was by field judge Pat Millett, who threw the flag.
- 1:58:04And I don't know what it's all about. Jim Chyanski gets tackle credit.
- 1:58:08Holding against Miami.
- 1:58:15And that might be one of the very few mistakes the Dolphins have made.
- 1:58:18This afternoon will be the exception of a few miscalculations and misses on the snap between quarterback rookie Don Strauch and center line.
- 1:58:29That's right, they haven't fumbled. They intercepted a fumble one time back into the hands of the fumbler who made a substantial gain out of it.
- 1:58:36And that's four and one interception early in the game.
- 1:58:41So it's now first down and 20 for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:58:44The ball spotted at their 24 yard line as Morris, a nodding hand, set in as setbacks behind Strauch.
- 1:58:50Matt Moore wide to the right, fully wide to the left. Miami leads with seven and up he.
- 1:58:54And Strauch waiting for the snap turn, gives to Morris left side, bursts through a hole and it gets hit.
- 1:58:59And stays on his feet, crossing the 30 to about the 32 yard line.
- 1:59:03Bruce Laird hit him and Morris took the hit and continued until Chyanski pulled him down at about the 32 or 3.
- 1:59:09It'll bring up a second down, about 11 for the Dolphins.
- 1:59:18At their own 33 yard line. Well, Miller's taken the 32.
- 1:59:24Twilley and Nat Moore coming out wide to the right side of the Miami set at the moment, which is a standard pro set with Morris and nodding hands shoulder to shoulder in the backfield.
- 1:59:33Waiting for the snap from Langer to quarterback Strauch, he's got his face, he hands on the reverse to Nat Moore around his own left side.
- 1:59:39He is up to the 35, to the 40 and is hit, crossing the 40 yard line and taken down by a gang of cold tacklers led by Nelson Muncie.
- 1:59:47Now the Dolphins in the middle of reverses and wide ends sweeps today against the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:59:55They're going to spot a bit somewhere around the 40, right on the 40 as a matter of fact.
- 2:00:00And that brings up third down at about four.
- 2:00:04And of course as the clock ticks away, it's not yet a factor, but this ball control, it can take seven or eight minutes to get out of the long way.
- 2:00:11And just seconds ago they were first and 20 and now they're third and four at the 40.
- 2:00:17Twilley is wide right.
- 2:00:19Nottingham and Morris step back, turn, give the nodding hands straight ahead, stop and first out of it and came forward another yard or two.
- 2:00:26He's very close to first down yardage at about the 44 yard line.
- 2:00:31This will require a measurement and we just don't know.
- 2:00:34But Nottingham was plugged up, rolled off the pile and came forward another two or three.
- 2:00:40They needed four to get the first down, they had to get just about out to the 44.
- 2:00:44And let's see whether or not they have made it.
- 2:00:47Any part of the football will give it to them, they put the six down and now they'll stretch the chain.
- 2:00:52I don't believe he's got it.
- 2:00:54I don't believe he has it even if it's five foot.
- 2:00:57You would kick it, wouldn't you?
- 2:00:59Here comes Seifler, he's not right there.
- 2:01:02If I know Schuyler, they will kick him.
- 2:01:04One of the things you don't fool with is a chance with a championship.
- 2:01:10You just don't gamble unless you're behind.
- 2:01:15Seifel is on field to punt, down field Howard Stevens is waiting, Marshall Johnson is back there with him.
- 2:01:20Rick Volk is back puddling.
- 2:01:22Seifel, who has done a very good job putting for the Dolphins for quite a few seasons,
- 2:01:27has continued his effective putting again this afternoon.
- 2:01:29He missed only one.
- 2:01:31Waiting for the snap.
- 2:01:34There goes the snap, here's Seifel's punt.
- 2:01:37He hits a fine high spiral deep into Baltimore territory.
- 2:01:40Stevens fair catch requested by Howard at about the 13-14 yard line.
- 2:01:44And the Colts go to work deep in their own backyard.
- 2:01:48There is a time out here in Baltimore.
- 2:01:50And they'll be back in one minute.
- 2:01:59Ball game over at New York.
- 2:02:01Rookie Rondy Colbert returned a third-quarter punt of 65 yards per TD.
- 2:02:06And Doug Cotter then reeled off a 46-yard scoring run the next time the New York got the ball.
- 2:02:12And the Giants snapped a five-game losing streak with a 28-14 win over the New Aldians Saints.
- 2:02:19Colbert's punt return for the score was the first by a Giant since 1970.
- 2:02:25And Cotter's TD jaunt was the longest of scrimmage this season by the 4-9 Giants.
- 2:02:30It was a six-straight loss from the 11th setback in 13 games for New Aldians.
- 2:02:35Final again, Giants 28 and Saints 14.
- 2:02:40In the American football conference, Pittsburgh of course already showed up in the central division.
- 2:02:46Cincinnati will have the wild card.
- 2:02:49Still a battle in the east though between these two clubs, Miami and Baltimore.
- 2:02:58Well, we're 12 minutes, 11 seconds away from the end of the fourth quarter
- 2:03:02with the Dolphins leading the Baltimore Colts 7-0.
- 2:03:04The second half of the ball game, the Miami defense is completely, absolutely shut off the Baltimore Colts
- 2:03:10by giving them a one-first down.
- 2:03:12They haven't been able to do a thing.
- 2:03:14Now it's far and doubly wide to the left side of the set.
- 2:03:17We've got Bill Olds and Mitchell with setbacks behind the cornerback.
- 2:03:20The give goes to no one, play, action, fake.
- 2:03:22He wants to throw, dumps the screen to Olds at the 10.
- 2:03:24Olds to the 15 and up to the 20 yard, the fumble.
- 2:03:27And I don't know what happened to it.
- 2:03:28They ruled it dead at the 20 yard line.
- 2:03:31Olds lost control of the 10, then Bill Olds recovered control of it at the 20 yard line.
- 2:03:36They made six, boy they need a first down.
- 2:03:38They've got to get it out of there because if they give the ball back,
- 2:03:41they're going to have to punt with an inability to make a first down here.
- 2:03:44Miami gets the kind of position that can work them close enough for a Yaprimean field goal.
- 2:03:49And with 11.43 and the way this team can control the ball, Baltimore can't afford that.
- 2:03:55All ready to go with the second and fourth at the 20 yard line.
- 2:03:58Foot backfield, nobody behind quarterback Jones.
- 2:04:00Car wide left, downy wide right.
- 2:04:02Here's the give to Mitchell into the middle.
- 2:04:03He goes, he's got yardage and it's up over 25 to about the 27 yard line goes Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:04:09That time Charlie Babb made the tackle and assisting him was Jake Scott
- 2:04:14and the Colts do get their second first down of this half.
- 2:04:23Well in Miami on the second half the Baltimore Colts lost their quarterback Burt Jones
- 2:04:27and Marty Domrez was rushed into the gap and he kept the ball on the ground and the Colts ran it.
- 2:04:32Well let's see what they're doing now.
- 2:04:34First down at the Baltimore 28, high formation old front man Lydell is the second man.
- 2:04:40Jones fake rolls back, wants to throw, fires outside and it is caught and out of bounds goes Glenn Dowdy
- 2:04:45at the 38 yard line of the Colts and that's close to another first down.
- 2:04:50He drilled it so he didn't again, you wonder if he's hurting.
- 2:04:53I know he's hurting but it's not affecting his delivery.
- 2:04:58Here's a first down as the pattern run by Dowdy was right at the post and he got the first down.
- 2:05:06Now Colts ball first down at their 38 yard line.
- 2:05:09They've come from their own 14 to their own 38 on three plays.
- 2:05:15Dowdy coming out wide to the left side of the set.
- 2:05:18Roger Carl the other way, the Colts looking at eye, presented eye formation against the Miami Dolphins right now.
- 2:05:24First and Janet, the Baltimore 38, trailing seven and nothing, Jones rolls slightly to his left, wants to throw,
- 2:05:29fires down the middle, it is caught by Raymond Chester at about the Baltimore 46 yard line.
- 2:05:35Chester peeled back on what they used to call a hundred years ago kind of a button hook.
- 2:05:41It's been that long.
- 2:05:43At the 46 yard line, second down and two.
- 2:05:50The New York Giants defeat New Orleans 28 to nothing, 28 to 14, excuse me, that's the final score.
- 2:05:57The Giants 28, New Orleans 14 is the final score.
- 2:06:01Second down, two at the Colts 46.
- 2:06:04Quick backfield, nobody behind Burt Jones.
- 2:06:06Dowdy to the right side of the set to give the light out.
- 2:06:08He's got first down at about the Baltimore 49 as he got him straight ahead.
- 2:06:13Mitchell picks up a first down at the Baltimore Colts 49 yard line on the Colts now.
- 2:06:18First down a little bit of an offensive threat that begins to get this ballpark livened up in Baltimore.
- 2:06:22Trailing Miami, seven to nothing, nine, nine fifty remaining.
- 2:06:27First down Baltimore at their own 49.
- 2:06:33And kind of a myth is beginning to settle in over Memorial Stadium and it's getting a little bit of a cooler side,
- 2:06:38but nobody in this ballpark minds.
- 2:06:40They're standing better than 60,000.
- 2:06:44We're just about 60 actually in the ballpark, first and ten at the 49, double flankers wide to the left side.
- 2:06:49Jones, Yanks takes, wants to throw a deep drop set up by Jones.
- 2:06:53Lobs at the screen to Bill Olds, he drops the football at about the Baltimore 49.
- 2:06:58They were trying to set a screen for Bill Olds and he dropped the football.
- 2:07:01Second down, 10 Baltimore at their own 49.
- 2:07:05That he caught the ball and the Miamis were coming at him and we'd have had no better than I think we have now.
- 2:07:10It's his second and ten, he was five yards behind the tournament line when he dropped the ball.
- 2:07:14Here's another final score, the Cleveland Browns who had all sorts of difficulty beginning this year have a wallop of Kansas City Chiefs.
- 2:07:2140 to 14, that is a final.
- 2:07:25Well this cold drive started on their own 14, it's now out to the 49 with a second down and ten.
- 2:07:30Dowdy, wide right, far wide left, standard pro set backfield.
- 2:07:34Miami leading by a count of seven to nothing with nine twenty three remaining.
- 2:07:38Jones is back to fill pressure, he's running away from pressure with a middle line backer foul.
- 2:07:42Fires upfield and is incomplete and almost intercepted by Charlie Babb.
- 2:07:47He was intending for Raymond Chester.
- 2:07:51And Chester is griping to the official about interference.
- 2:07:55He claims he's being held and it'll be third down and ten at the 49 yard line
- 2:08:00and Jones is having a difficult day against a determined Miami defense.
- 2:08:05Dow splits down, got after him and forced a bad pass.
- 2:08:10Probably an ill-conceived attempt, he shouldn't have thrown the ball really.
- 2:08:15He was lucky Babb couldn't handle it.
- 2:08:21Third down and ten and this might be the play of this ball game.
- 2:08:24You never know, third and ten at the 49 and Jones takes it away, he wants the throw.
- 2:08:29Pressure is coming, rolls right, sets and fires, caught by Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:08:32He's got a first down inside the Miami 40.
- 2:08:35Mitchell caught it at the Miami 38.
- 2:08:39Great play by Mitchell who spun immediately upon the reception of the ball
- 2:08:43and got away from somebody who hit him.
- 2:08:45It wouldn't have been a first down had he not made that move.
- 2:08:48And that got him as far as a 38 first down.
- 2:08:51Big play.
- 2:08:52Baltimore at the Miami 38 yard line.
- 2:08:55In the first half of the ball game they got deep enough for Linhart to try a 30 yard field goal and Tony missed it.
- 2:09:00Now they have first down at the Miami 38.
- 2:09:038.43 remaining.
- 2:09:05Dowdy wide right, Carl wide left.
- 2:09:07Mitchell and Bill Oles with setbacks.
- 2:09:11Return the gift to Mitchell, into the middle, he hits straight ahead, bangs his way inside the Miami 35
- 2:09:16to about the 34 yard line before Bob Matheson is able to stack him up.
- 2:09:20A quick pick up of four by the tough running man from Penn State, Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:09:26Second down, six now to the Miami 34.
- 2:09:30I think they're going to tell you when this one's over Chuck, it's been the toughest fitting game of the year.
- 2:09:36The battle in the trenches there is unreal.
- 2:09:40It really has been a tough day as both defenses have played exceptionally well
- 2:09:44and in that Miami is leading 7-0, I guess you'll have to say that the Miami defense has certainly played better than Baltimore.
- 2:09:50Second down, six to the Miami 34.
- 2:09:52Far wide right, Dowdy wide left.
- 2:09:54Jones with a swift backfield, a takeaway by Burt, no fake, deep drop,
- 2:09:57off the throw, dumps it off to Mitchell, Mitchell's got a 35.
- 2:09:59Down to the 25 and he's inside the Miami 25 and taken down at about the 23.
- 2:10:07Jake Scott, among others, made the tackle, Jones was also there.
- 2:10:11Mitchell caught it, put a move on a defender and went flying downfield to the Miami 23, first down.
- 2:10:26The Baltimore Cold Drive starting on their 14-yard line has now come all the way down to the Miami Dolphins 23.
- 2:10:34And Jones brings them out sending far wide to the right side, dowdy to the left side.
- 2:10:38Again it's Mitchell and Bill Olds to set back behind the gutty kid from LSU, waiting for the takeaway by Burt.
- 2:10:45Jones has, rolls to his left, wants to throw, sets and fires.
- 2:10:49Caught by Chester at the 15 and down he goes at about the 11.
- 2:10:54Baltimore is on fire as Chester has just caught a pass with the Miami 11-yard line.
- 2:11:00Curtis Johnson made the tackle with 6.
- 2:11:0245 remaining.
- 2:11:04They've come 75 yards, 11 to go to get a tie, but they can take the point.
- 2:11:10And Jimmy Kennedy replaces Roger Carr on 1st and 10 at the 11.
- 2:11:17Tight end.
- 2:11:18Roger Carr out of the ball game.
- 2:11:22Chester and Jimmy Kennedy on the tight end.
- 2:11:24Dowdy wide to the right side.
- 2:11:26They go to a double wing, Olds on one end of the wing and Dowdy on the other end.
- 2:11:30Down behind the quarterback is Lydell Mitchell waiting for the takeaway by Burt at the dial from the 11.
- 2:11:34Pitch out to Mitchell, swings to his right cut.
- 2:11:36To the 10.
- 2:11:37Down to the 6-yard line goes Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:11:40A fine run and a good tackle by Jake Scott.
- 2:11:44The Colts can make a first down without scoring.
- 2:11:47They're at the Dolphins 6-yard line.
- 2:11:49Second down and 5.
- 2:11:51And Frantz Taylor, the blockers on the right side, blasted it out.
- 2:11:56And look at the Baltimore Colts crowd.
- 2:11:58They're here this afternoon hoping against Hope.
- 2:12:00The Colts are able to do it.
- 2:12:02They are now within 6 yards of tying the football game.
- 2:12:05Dowdy wide right.
- 2:12:06They go to the double wing.
- 2:12:08Dowdy's the wing on the right side.
- 2:12:09Bill Olds the wing on the left side.
- 2:12:11Mitchell the only man behind the quarterback.
- 2:12:13Second and 5 at the Miami 6.
- 2:12:15Waiting for Jones.
- 2:12:16The takeaway.
- 2:12:17Pitch out to Mitchell to the right side.
- 2:12:18Swinging back to the 5, to the 2 and he is in for the touchdown.
- 2:12:22Oh my.
- 2:12:23He scores.
- 2:12:24What a drive.
- 2:12:34Oh my.
- 2:12:36The Colts have come from their 14-yard line in a sustained drive,
- 2:12:40culminated by a 6-yard sweep on the right side by Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:12:45And in touchdowns they apply the game in point.
- 2:12:48It remains for Tony Lindhart to do that.
- 2:12:52George Coons and Bob Pratt.
- 2:12:54Coons just blasted over the Miami defenders.
- 2:12:57Lindhart will try the point after.
- 2:12:59Marty Dom raises the holder.
- 2:13:015.30 remaining.
- 2:13:03It is Miami 7, Baltimore 6.
- 2:13:05We're waiting.
- 2:13:06Shot.
- 2:13:07Kick.
- 2:13:08In the air.
- 2:13:09Kick is.
- 2:13:10Good.
- 2:13:18There is a timeout with the score.
- 2:13:21The Miami Dolphins 7, the Baltimore Colts 7.
- 2:13:26Final score at Cleveland, Greg Pruitt darted for 214 yards today in three touchdowns
- 2:13:32and passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season
- 2:13:35as the Cleveland Browns overwhelmed the Kansas City Chiefs 40 to 14.
- 2:13:40A little halfback carried 26 times and scored on runs of 10, 3, and 14 yards
- 2:13:46to run his season's total of 1,030 with one game to go.
- 2:13:50He won Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly as the only Brown runners to reach that level
- 2:13:55before 44,368 fans who gave him a full minute's applause when he broke the mark
- 2:14:02on his 14-yard touchdown run midway in the fourth period.
- 2:14:06The victory was the Browns' third all at home against 10 defeats
- 2:14:10and dropped the Crippled Chiefs who were shut out until the final 10 minutes to 5-8.
- 2:14:16Pruitt scored in the last minute of the fourth period
- 2:14:19and the Browns recovered a bad center snap on a field goal attempt on their own 44.
- 2:14:24Final score again, Browns 40, Chiefs 14.
- 2:14:28Well, a jam-packed Memorial Stadium that saw their club unable to score
- 2:14:34through three-quarters of the football game of Justine LeYoung Colts
- 2:14:38mount a drive of 86 yards and 13 plays culminated by a six-yard sweep of right end by Mitchell.
- 2:14:44It's a 7-7 tie.
- 2:14:46He's got it hard, hits that football, he's got it hit pretty good.
- 2:14:49Matt Moore coming up to about the 12th.
- 2:14:51Moore down the far sideline, 20, 25, 30.
- 2:14:54And he has now reversed along the 30-yard line.
- 2:14:57Coming out of the open, he has hit and pulled down at the 30-yard line by the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:15:03Don McCauley was there and knifed him down at about the 30.
- 2:15:06Moore, who has been just, I'll tell you, he has been a tough man to handle
- 2:15:11in returns this afternoon, almost did it again.
- 2:15:14Browns, this crowd on the feet, Vince, with that cry of defense, defense, defense.
- 2:15:19What a play McCauley made, Chuck.
- 2:15:21He was cutting for the wide open stages, had a lot of room on this side,
- 2:15:25and Mack didn't let him get around the corner.
- 2:15:28Well, we'll watch Mercury, Morris, and Nottingham,
- 2:15:31the setbacks behind rookie quarterback Don Strzok, waiting for the takeaway.
- 2:15:35Long count by Strzok, he's got it, wants to throw a first down.
- 2:15:38Looks to find the receiver, jumps his penalty marker,
- 2:15:41and the drop as Nottingham takes the screen up to the 35-37-yard line.
- 2:15:45A flag is dropped back at the line of Grimage.
- 2:15:47Jim Chionski made the tackle for Baltimore.
- 2:15:50A lot of times it's a hole on a play like that, and it is on a screen.
- 2:15:56And that's what they were doing, Miami holding, and the Colts will take it back.
- 2:16:00And right now, right now, Vince, for WJEJ and Hagerstown Maryland
- 2:16:04and all of our network stations, we'll pause now for station identification.
- 2:16:08This is the Metro Media Baltimore Colts football network.
- 2:16:11This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 2:16:15S-C-N to Melville.
- 2:16:18We're looking at one of the sights that hasn't been seen in Baltimore for some time,
- 2:16:28but you've got a jam-packed stadium.
- 2:16:30They're in this ball game as much as their football team,
- 2:16:33two good football teams, and what a show they've given us today in Baltimore.
- 2:16:37After the penalty on the holding, it's first and funny at the Miami 20.
- 2:16:41Drop, yanks it away, gives it to Morris, the sweep of his left hand,
- 2:16:44turns the corners in, up to 25, and up to the 30-yard line goes Morris
- 2:16:48before he is finally hit and held.
- 2:16:50And Stan White did the hitting on the holding, a good tackle by Stan.
- 2:16:53A left-end sweep by Merck Morris picks up 10 quick ones,
- 2:16:57and it's second and 10 for the Dolphins at their own 30.
- 2:17:00Four-fifty less in the ball game.
- 2:17:03Morris is, again, twillies out. Morris is out now.
- 2:17:08And we've got, into the ball game now, Freddie Solomon, also Boulos, I believe, and Larry Seipel.
- 2:17:14And Matt Moore and Solomon come wide to the right side of the set.
- 2:17:18Seipel is split off at the left end.
- 2:17:20Boulos, the only man behind the quarterback, Don Strzok, second and 10 at the Miami 30,
- 2:17:24waiting for the take away by Strzok.
- 2:17:27He's got a straight drop. He wants to throw, looks to find a receiver,
- 2:17:30fires it down the middle, is going to be caught by Solomon at the 45,
- 2:17:33and he ducks ahead to the 47-yard line.
- 2:17:37Freddie Solomon made a heck of a catch on the return route.
- 2:17:40Jackie Wallace made the tackle.
- 2:17:41The Dolphins have a first down at their own 47.
- 2:17:47Solomon has great deep speed, Chuck, and I'm sure the defender is concerned about the deep pass
- 2:17:53rather than protecting against the first down pass, which Freddie ran.
- 2:17:57And again, a defensive front floor that leads the National Football League,
- 2:18:00and Sacks has not been able to get to the quarterback today.
- 2:18:04Hand off to Mercury, swings to left side, makes the cut and gets a hit,
- 2:18:07and they may have come off.
- 2:18:08That's a big pile up at the 45-yard line.
- 2:18:10Baltimore may have recovered.
- 2:18:12Wait for the sign from the officials.
- 2:18:14They're still battling down there. There has been no sign yet.
- 2:18:17But the fumble has been recovered at the 45-yard line.
- 2:18:20We wait to determine possession.
- 2:18:22Fred Cook is in. Baltimore! Baltimore recovered.
- 2:18:32It looks like Fred Cook recovered the fumble.
- 2:18:34He's laying on the ball.
- 2:18:35There is a timeout here in Baltimore with a score.
- 2:18:38The Dolphins, 7 and the Colts, 7.
- 2:18:41Well, they're going wild in the royal stadium in Baltimore.
- 2:18:44They haven't had a real good ball club since the heyday of Johnny Yonatus,
- 2:18:48and they had some real fine ball clubs then back in the 1960s.
- 2:18:52But there's been a dark day since then,
- 2:18:54but they're back this year with young Bert Jones in company.
- 2:18:58They're doing real well.
- 2:18:59Here's some finals.
- 2:19:00At Atlanta, rookie quarterback Steve Borkowski passed for 305 yards today in two TDs,
- 2:19:06and the Atlanta Falcons, in a custom favorites role,
- 2:19:10played daring offense while defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31-9.
- 2:19:15The teams were locked in a scoreless duel until late in the second period.
- 2:19:19Once Borkowski found the range, the Falcons were almost unstoppable.
- 2:19:24Borkowski threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alfred Jenkins,
- 2:19:27was barely a minute left of the second period,
- 2:19:29then connected with Jenkins again on a 63-yard TD play late in the third period.
- 2:19:35So the final there, the Falcons win over the 49ers easily, 31-9.
- 2:19:43The offensive and defensive players picked after the game
- 2:19:46will announce their picks during the locker room report,
- 2:19:48and both teams get certificates from hamburgers.
- 2:19:51Hamburgers, if you're going to address them, might as well do it right.
- 2:19:54Chuck, I think Freddy Cook was laying on the ball with it under his back.
- 2:19:59Unreal.
- 2:20:01That strength.
- 2:20:02And they can't pry it out.
- 2:20:04Well, it's first down, Baltimore at the 46-yard line after Fred Cook recovered.
- 2:20:08Mercury, Mars is fumbled, Dowdy in motion to pitch out to Mitchell,
- 2:20:11the sweeper is left end, one block up to it, and a penalty flank goes down.
- 2:20:15Mitchell is roped down right along the line of scrimmage.
- 2:20:17And the point I wanted to make a moment ago, Ben,
- 2:20:20is that you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you, and I'm one aware of that.
- 2:20:24But television took a timeout right after Fred Cook recovered that fumble
- 2:20:27when the Colts may have had the Miami team a little bit off balance defensively
- 2:20:31and gave them a minute and a half to stand around and think about it.
- 2:20:33I think maybe something should be done about those kind of things.
- 2:20:36That's when maybe you can strike while the iron is hot,
- 2:20:39and you just might be able to take advantage of it.
- 2:20:41Well, on the other hand, they'll probably say that the defensive team coming in,
- 2:20:46isn't it, if it were old-time college football or old-time pro football,
- 2:20:50where the same team had a say on the field.
- 2:20:52So maybe that's the way they justify it, but it's a pretty good hand that feeds us,
- 2:20:56and as you say, we don't want to fight too hard on the hand.
- 2:21:00That's true, but I'll tell you something.
- 2:21:02You know, they can take another time for it, you know,
- 2:21:05after the first offensive play, let's call a timeout, you know?
- 2:21:0815-yard penalty, though, for slipping while we were headed for it.
- 2:21:12And it's now 25, first and 25 back at the 30-yard line.
- 2:21:19And Jones yanks it away a straight drop.
- 2:21:21He wants to throw, looks to find a receiver, dumps it off to McCauley.
- 2:21:24McCauley is galloping up and leaps over a would-be tackler
- 2:21:26and comes down at the 35-yard line.
- 2:21:30And the gain is up to the Baltimore Colts, 35-yard line,
- 2:21:34and the Colts now have picked up four on that one.
- 2:21:37So it'll be second down, and they've got just about 21 to go.
- 2:21:43Time, 3.16, 3.15, and the clock is moving.
- 2:21:47And it's a 7-7 tie.
- 2:21:49Baltimore in possession of their own 35.
- 2:21:54Second down, about 21.
- 2:21:55They've got to get to the Miami 44 for a first down.
- 2:21:59McCauley alongside of Lydell Mitchell,
- 2:22:01a setback to Dowdy wide right, car wide left.
- 2:22:04Take away by Jones, wants to throw, a deep drop,
- 2:22:06fires upfield.
- 2:22:07Here comes Lydell, and Lydell cannot make the catch.
- 2:22:10And, whoa, my, the Colts really protest
- 2:22:13massive interference against linebackers.
- 2:22:15Wow, Matheson, and now a flag may be dropped against the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:22:21The Colts may have protested just a little bit too much.
- 2:22:25And the man who dropped the flag over here is back judge Jim Poole.
- 2:22:30Hold on a minute, make it to line judge Bob Beek,
- 2:22:34who dropped the penalty flag,
- 2:22:36and a personal foul against the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:22:38Yeah, un-sportsman iconic, I think, against Jones,
- 2:22:42who ran in to protest the call.
- 2:22:45The thing happened in front of the Colts bench,
- 2:22:47which will incite the players on the field
- 2:22:50when everybody on the bench jumps up and down.
- 2:22:53And you look at the rerun, and he really looked like he was raked
- 2:22:57before he touched the ball.
- 2:23:00Now back to the 20-yard line with his penalty.
- 2:23:03Well, when the Colts get back to the 14,
- 2:23:05they'll be back where they started their last touchdown drive.
- 2:23:08They call it on Jones.
- 2:23:10Un-sportsmanlike conduct is the call.
- 2:23:13And the officials right on top of this ballgame
- 2:23:17don't want it to get out of hand,
- 2:23:19and they've handled the ballgame exceptionally well this afternoon.
- 2:23:23This is a game that has intense feelings in it,
- 2:23:25and Baltimore now is in possession back of the Rome 20.
- 2:23:29And 36 yards to go.
- 2:23:31It's exactly right.
- 2:23:34Far wide left, alley-wide right, Jones fakes, rolls back,
- 2:23:37wants to throw, fires outside to Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:23:39Mitchell comes up to about the 20.
- 2:23:41There's another flag down over the far side of the field.
- 2:23:44As Mitchell tries to run out of the screen
- 2:23:46up around the 30-yard line, the flag is dropped.
- 2:23:51Don Reese made the tackle that time,
- 2:23:53and with the 2.43 remaining,
- 2:23:56this ballgame now is deteriorating just a little bit.
- 2:23:59These two clubs have played a whale of a football game
- 2:24:01right on through this afternoon,
- 2:24:03an hour with a fog settling in over more in Memorial Stadium.
- 2:24:06Perhaps they're getting just a little bit too anxious
- 2:24:09about some of the things.
- 2:24:12Clipping against the Baltimore Colts,
- 2:24:14and it's declined by the Miami Dolphins.
- 2:24:19A little walk down comes up with a gang of yardage,
- 2:24:22and David Lee is the punt return, the putter on field,
- 2:24:25and the punt return team of 3-0.
- 2:24:27Jake Scott Charlie Babb in the middle,
- 2:24:29a guy who has just done nothing but a brilliant job
- 2:24:33of returning kickoff and punt today
- 2:24:35for the Miami Dolphins, Nat Moore.
- 2:24:37He's down around the 25-yard line
- 2:24:39of the Baltimore Colts of the Miami Dolphins.
- 2:24:42It's that for David Lee. Here comes his punt.
- 2:24:45He hits it good, and coming up on it is Nat Moore.
- 2:24:47Fair catch requested, and Moore makes it at the Miami 38.
- 2:24:52Good coverage by the Colts.
- 2:24:53Miami is protecting that return.
- 2:24:57Now it's up to that ball to defense
- 2:25:00of the Baltimore Colts,
- 2:25:02and they have got more than a little bit of work cut out for them.
- 2:25:06The offensive line of the Miami Dolphins, magnificent.
- 2:25:10They have not allowed their quarterback
- 2:25:12to be sacked one time today.
- 2:25:14First and 10, Miami, up a 38-yard line.
- 2:25:16Foot backfield, nobody behind Don Strach.
- 2:25:18He's got a clean spotless white jersey.
- 2:25:20Hands it off to Nottingham.
- 2:25:22He swings his left side, puts his head down,
- 2:25:24and John Dutton, it looked like, ropes him down
- 2:25:26as he crossed the 40-yard line
- 2:25:28after a tough run of maybe four.
- 2:25:32Spot the ball at about the 41-yard line,
- 2:25:35and that's a gain of three.
- 2:25:36Second down and seven now for Miami
- 2:25:39at their own 41-yard line.
- 2:25:42And that clock, that timepiece down here on the scoreboard
- 2:25:45rolling relentlessly along.
- 2:25:50Wide to the left, fully to the right, Matt Moore.
- 2:25:53Foot backfield, nobody behind that quarterback, Don Strach.
- 2:25:56Waiting for the take-away, Strach gives it to Morris.
- 2:25:58Left side, puts his head down, and racked up
- 2:26:00right about at the line of scrimmage.
- 2:26:02He may have gotten a yard. Airman got there.
- 2:26:04And also, Bruce Laird, and we may be right down
- 2:26:06to the two-minute warning, and that's exactly where we are.
- 2:26:08There's the two-minute warning with the score.
- 2:26:11The Miami Dolphins, seven, the Baltimore Colts, seven,
- 2:26:14will be back in 60 seconds.
- 2:26:17Well, we've had a number of sudden death games,
- 2:26:20overtime games this year.
- 2:26:21I think I've had three straight Sundays, it seems like.
- 2:26:23So we could have another one today with the Miami Dolphins
- 2:26:28something like 59 yards away from Paydirt.
- 2:26:31Of course, your premium can kick that field goal
- 2:26:33from anywhere from 35 yards out.
- 2:26:37So they're sitting in a position, at least, for a field goal
- 2:26:39with two minutes to go.
- 2:26:40It's a lot of time in professional football,
- 2:26:43and they'll set things up, I'm sure, when time's back in.
- 2:26:46Detroit, the Lions are really putting on
- 2:26:48Minnesota Vikings today in the first period
- 2:26:50of score, two touchdowns.
- 2:26:52The first one was covering 14 yards in the pass play.
- 2:26:58The other one from Smith to Smith, by the way.
- 2:27:00And the other touchdown, a pass from Reed to Briscoe
- 2:27:05covering just one yard, extra point good on both attempts.
- 2:27:08And let's make a correction on that.
- 2:27:10The first pass was from Reed to Briscoe, one yard.
- 2:27:13The second one was a pass from Reed to Thompson,
- 2:27:1646 yards, Detroit leads in the first period, 14-0.
- 2:27:20Well, nobody is going to go home complaining too much
- 2:27:22about this football game.
- 2:27:24So far, it has been everything a football fan could ask.
- 2:27:27For the Baltimore Crolls fans here in Baltimore,
- 2:27:29it's been a nail-biter and an uphill battle back
- 2:27:32to get tied up by the Baltimore Cokes.
- 2:27:34It's been a steady, thoroughly professional performance
- 2:27:37by the Miami Dolphins, who are playing
- 2:27:39with a third-string quarterback.
- 2:27:42And here we are with a minute and 57 on the clock,
- 2:27:45Miami third down and five at the Miami 43-yard line.
- 2:27:52And they go to their double wing right now
- 2:27:54to the Miami Dolphins, waiting for the takeaway
- 2:27:56by quarterback Don Strzok.
- 2:27:58He's back and back rolling to his left now,
- 2:28:01looking to find a receiver.
- 2:28:02Fires desperately upfield, it is caught by Seifel,
- 2:28:04and he is at the Baltimore Crolls 42-yard line
- 2:28:07with what appears to be a first down without any difficulty.
- 2:28:10Seifel is there and a fine rollout by Don Strzok
- 2:28:14and a perfect pass to Larry Seifel
- 2:28:16for a first down at the Baltimore Crolls 42.
- 2:28:21One-fifty-one, Yafremin, of course,
- 2:28:24a great field goal kicker, has missed a couple a day,
- 2:28:26doesn't like the dirt, but if he can move it a little closer,
- 2:28:30he'll get a chance to like the dirt.
- 2:28:33And Mercury Morris and Nottingham shoulder to shoulder
- 2:28:36at a standard throw set for the first down at the Baltimore 42,
- 2:28:40waiting for Strzok in motion,
- 2:28:41twilly toward the Miami backfield to give Goose,
- 2:28:43and Nottingham swinging his left side turn in the corner.
- 2:28:45Didn't go anywhere, Stan White was there,
- 2:28:47and White just wouldn't give an inch,
- 2:28:49and Miami now comes up second down still,
- 2:28:51ten at the Baltimore 42.
- 2:28:55Now they may give him a short yard on that,
- 2:28:57I think if we look at that football,
- 2:28:58better do the same thing.
- 2:29:00Second down and still about nine,
- 2:29:01the ball around the Baltimore 41.
- 2:29:04That's Fogg coming in, Chuck, and the haze over the stadium
- 2:29:07makes it difficult to see the upper deck on the other side.
- 2:29:11Well, they've been Seifel wide left,
- 2:29:13and here comes Nat Moore wide right,
- 2:29:15along with Solomon, Boulogne, the only man behind Strzok,
- 2:29:19second down nine at the Baltimore 41,
- 2:29:21waiting for Strzok's move.
- 2:29:23Quarterback snaps it away, a straight drop,
- 2:29:24wants to throw pressure, coming, fires out of the pressure,
- 2:29:27and it's going to be incomplete.
- 2:29:29A trap of the ball at the Baltimore 31,
- 2:29:32there to cover was McCloud,
- 2:29:35and I'll tell you, he really had a hurry to throw it
- 2:29:37with Solomon, the intended receiver,
- 2:29:39and Freddie traps the football,
- 2:29:41and the official right on the spot waves it off immediately,
- 2:29:44third down nine, Miami at the Baltimore 41,
- 2:29:46time a minute and seven seconds to Dolphins 7, McColk 7.
- 2:29:51That was just a big play, huh?
- 2:29:53Freddie Cook made pressure pay off, I think,
- 2:29:57in forcing Strzok to throw it quickly
- 2:29:59and under throw Solomon.
- 2:30:02And that right side tackle over there,
- 2:30:04Norm Evans and Freddie Cook have been having a good go-around
- 2:30:06all day long, and Evans has done a masterful job
- 2:30:09at containing one of the very best past rushers
- 2:30:12the Colts have had at the defensive end
- 2:30:14since the days of a fellow named Gino Marchetti.
- 2:30:17Exactly.
- 2:30:19Well, they have taken a little bit of a timeout here.
- 2:30:21The clock shows us a minute and seven seconds.
- 2:30:23It's the Miami Dolphins 7, the Baltimore Colts 7,
- 2:30:27a scoreless first half.
- 2:30:29Miami finally puts seven on the board in the third quarter.
- 2:30:32The Colts equal it with an 86-yard, 13-play drive
- 2:30:36in the fourth quarter, and as they say,
- 2:30:39the issue is yet to be resolved,
- 2:30:41and the outcome is in doubt.
- 2:30:43Waiting for, as it so often happens, Vince,
- 2:30:47you get in a tight situation like this,
- 2:30:49and of course, yes, there will be overtime
- 2:30:51if it ends this way,
- 2:30:53but so many football games today are decided by,
- 2:30:55I think, six of the eight overtime games played so far
- 2:30:58in the National Football League this year
- 2:31:00have been decided by a field goal.
- 2:31:03Well, we have one of the premier people
- 2:31:05who decided the longest game ever played that way,
- 2:31:07and he may get the opportunity, Darrell, you're premier.
- 2:31:10Again, in the passing formation,
- 2:31:12Boulogne is the only man behind quarterback, Strzok,
- 2:31:15and the Colts now face third down,
- 2:31:17nine, Miami at the Baltimore 41,
- 2:31:19waiting for Strzok to take away a straight drop.
- 2:31:21He wants to throw a little pressure coming,
- 2:31:23right-fires upfield, it's caught,
- 2:31:25and a penalty flag is being dropped back
- 2:31:27on the 45-yard line.
- 2:31:28The ball is caught at the Baltimore 30
- 2:31:30by Freddie Solomon,
- 2:31:31and a penalty flag dropped back at about the 45,
- 2:31:34and it looks as though the flag will go against the Miami Dolphins.
- 2:31:38You're leading the applause.
- 2:31:40There's a personal foul.
- 2:31:41There's a personal foul.
- 2:31:42What they show us, Jim Langer may have been holding on the play.
- 2:31:48That's a guess, but it'll nullify a Miami first down
- 2:31:52at the Baltimore 30,
- 2:31:57and they'll walk it off.
- 2:32:02They will walk it off against the Dolphins,
- 2:32:04and they're doing that right now,
- 2:32:05bring it back to midfield,
- 2:32:06take it into the Miami 45,
- 2:32:08down to the Miami 44.
- 2:32:15Now Miami has a pre-ventory,
- 2:32:20third down and 20...
- 2:32:27Oh, it's against Langer.
- 2:32:28Chuck, about 23 yards to go.
- 2:32:30They've got at least 23, 23, 24 yards to go.
- 2:32:34Third down at the Baltimore 30, Miami 44,
- 2:32:36again that same passing formation.
- 2:32:38Strach is back to throw.
- 2:32:39Looks to find, rolls to his right,
- 2:32:40looks to find a receiver,
- 2:32:41they're going to get him,
- 2:32:42and Strach is down by Stan Weiss,
- 2:32:45or Mike Barnes, excuse me, Mike Barnes.
- 2:32:49Finally broke through and smacked the quarterback's rock
- 2:32:52at the Miami 33.
- 2:32:5753 seconds to go.
- 2:32:59What a dramatic moment is the Fogg really now, Chuck,
- 2:33:02becoming difficult to see the field
- 2:33:06as we get into overtime.
- 2:33:0833 seconds to go on fourth down.
- 2:33:11Miles of yardage needed.
- 2:33:14Believe me, as Vince is telling you,
- 2:33:15the Fogg is rolling in at Memorial Stadium.
- 2:33:18Some of the upper deck patrons, I am sure,
- 2:33:20are having a little difficulty seeing.
- 2:33:22Here is Larry Seipel's front.
- 2:33:23Howard Stevens is waiting at the Baltimore 32,
- 2:33:26waiting for the snap from center.
- 2:33:29Still waiting, and waiting.
- 2:33:31Barnes has finally smacked that Miami quarterback,
- 2:33:33and what a time for a muck sack.
- 2:33:35And the clock peeling along.
- 2:33:36Here comes the snap.
- 2:33:37Seipel hits it end over end.
- 2:33:39Howard Stevens backpedals to the Baltimore 25.
- 2:33:41He's got Langer along the 25, up to the 30,
- 2:33:44to the 35, 40, to the 45, 50,
- 2:33:46tripped in the Miami 48-yard line.
- 2:33:48Stevens is down.
- 2:33:50And the Colts now will stop that clock with 18 seconds left.
- 2:33:56Look at Chuck.
- 2:33:57He still had a few people to pass,
- 2:33:59but he did trip as he crossed midfield and fell on the 48.
- 2:34:04Return of 23, 28 yards, 27 yards.
- 2:34:08At the 49-yard line, Baltimore,
- 2:34:10first and 10 at the Miami Dolphin 49,
- 2:34:13a return by Stevens.
- 2:34:1618 seconds on the clock,
- 2:34:18and the fog is really rolling in and settling down here on the playing area.
- 2:34:22At Memorial Stadium with 18 seconds left.
- 2:34:25Far wide left, Doughty wide right.
- 2:34:27Jones waiting for the snap from end of all.
- 2:34:30He's got space, rolls back, wants to throw.
- 2:34:32Looking to find a receiver.
- 2:34:33Fires down the gut.
- 2:34:34Caught by New!
- 2:34:35It's incomplete.
- 2:34:36Doughty was there,
- 2:34:37and could not hold onto the ball at the Miami 28-yard line.
- 2:34:42What a sheet he's got.
- 2:34:43Had it and couldn't hold it, and is up-flipping.
- 2:34:46It'll be second off, still 10, Baltimore at the Miami 49.
- 2:34:50Great hit by the Dolphin defender.
- 2:34:52How true.
- 2:34:53Knock it out of his hands.
- 2:34:54Oh my, you can see it.
- 2:34:56The field goes sad from there.
- 2:34:59It took six seconds to reel that playoff,
- 2:35:01and Baltimore is ready to go again.
- 2:35:04What an amazing picture,
- 2:35:05and what an afternoon of football in Baltimore.
- 2:35:08At the end of the regulation period, the Colts and the Dolphins in a 7-7-5.
- 2:35:12Doughty wide left, far wide right.
- 2:35:14And Jones again, waiting for that snap from end of all.
- 2:35:17In motion, Doughty is toward his own backfield.
- 2:35:19A fake handoff, rolling back to throw is Jones setting.
- 2:35:21Looks to find a receiver.
- 2:35:22Fires down the gut.
- 2:35:23It is incomplete again, trying to hook it up with Glenn Doughty,
- 2:35:26and Jake Scott was there to break up the play.
- 2:35:28An incomplete throw at pass,
- 2:35:30and the Colts come up the third down at the 49,
- 2:35:32as they try desperately to get in field goal position for Tony Linhardt.
- 2:35:37Now they almost have to go for the touchdown,
- 2:35:40but they do have a timeout.
- 2:35:42They have all their timeouts left, but seven seconds.
- 2:35:46It will take them that long almost to run the play,
- 2:35:49but I don't know whether they'd have time, Chuck,
- 2:35:51to kick the field goal, even if they complete a deep pass.
- 2:35:53It would be very difficult to think that they would right now,
- 2:35:56and if they run that sideline pattern with about a second or two,
- 2:35:58yeah, they might get it.
- 2:36:00Doughty now coming wide right,
- 2:36:02or rather Doughty wide left, far wide right.
- 2:36:05Down ten at the Miami 49.
- 2:36:08Jones yanked it away, back to throw, a deep drop,
- 2:36:11looking now, running out of pressure.
- 2:36:13Jones is still in trouble, running up field.
- 2:36:15Now stops, fires toward the end zone over everybody.
- 2:36:18Incomplete forward pass.
- 2:36:20He just threw it away, Jones hoping that it won't be called intentional grounding,
- 2:36:23and that's it.
- 2:36:25The gun has sounded here at Memorial Stadium.
- 2:36:27That's the end of the regulation play with Baltimore and Miami tied 7-7.
- 2:36:32They'll be back with overtime in 60 seconds.
- 2:36:37We'll take a look while we have that 60-second break before the flip of the coin,
- 2:36:40and that's very, very important, who wins that toss.
- 2:36:43First team, of course, that scores in the 15-minute period, wins the ballgame.
- 2:36:47Okay, Oakland has scored again.
- 2:36:50Banasak three yard run, extra point good by Akela Splanda.
- 2:36:54It's 13-3 Oakland over Houston.
- 2:36:56That is in the second period.
- 2:36:59Now the Cardinals, Peyton has run the ball 10 yards for a touchdown.
- 2:37:04The extra point blocked with that 2-3.
- 2:37:09Well, Vince, we go to overtime here in Baltimore,
- 2:37:12and the Dolphins have won the toss and have elected to receive.
- 2:37:15Now, there have been eight overtime games so far this year,
- 2:37:20and six of those eight overtime football games have been won by a field goal,
- 2:37:25and six times the teams that won the toss lost the game.
- 2:37:30Well, we'll figure Tony Linnhardt can kick it down deep into the 10 zone,
- 2:37:34and Miami will put him in play at the 20.
- 2:37:37Baltimore will hold him, get good field position after a punt,
- 2:37:40and then we'll go from there, maybe.
- 2:37:43Well, we've been involved in a few of these.
- 2:37:44Chuck, do you remember the, well, Taney, do you remember the playoff game,
- 2:37:48as the asking if you remember this morning,
- 2:37:50because you remember the famous game in New York.
- 2:37:53How true I remember.
- 2:37:55That was quite an afternoon of football,
- 2:37:57and it was my great privilege I shared the microphone that day with Chris Schenkel,
- 2:38:00and I did the first half of the game and Schenkel the second half,
- 2:38:03and then the overtime period rolled around.
- 2:38:05It was time for me to go to work again.
- 2:38:07The other time we got mixed up in an overtime ball game,
- 2:38:09I was working the Green Bay Packers-Baltimore Colts game,
- 2:38:12and that was a game that brought about those great big tall uprights,
- 2:38:15as you now see, because a fellow named Chandler kicked one
- 2:38:18that a lot of us believe today was not good.
- 2:38:22They're the only two in which the Colts have been involved
- 2:38:25in the many years they've been playing this game.
- 2:38:28So they'll kick it off, Tony Lindhart kicking into the closed end of the stadium,
- 2:38:32which means that Miami will, of course, run into the open end,
- 2:38:36where both teams have scored in the 7-7 tie this afternoon.
- 2:38:41I guess if you're a perfectionist, Vince,
- 2:38:43if you're the kind of a fellow who knows everything there is to know about football,
- 2:38:46you can probably find a lot of faults with this ball game,
- 2:38:48but I'm a scoreboard reader.
- 2:38:50When I see two football teams play four quarters of football,
- 2:38:53and they're still tied, I've got to figure here are two pretty good ball clubs
- 2:38:56that are doing their job as best they can
- 2:38:59and are rewarded by being in a tie situation.
- 2:39:02I think the Dolphins and the Colts are just that way.
- 2:39:05Two very good football teams, and at the end of the fourth period,
- 2:39:08they couldn't figure out which one was better.
- 2:39:12So here we go to overtime to try and figure that out.
- 2:39:14Well, Miami's shown an awful lot of heart,
- 2:39:16getting itself together with so many injuries.
- 2:39:18Baltimore's youth is playing with great boys,
- 2:39:20and I think it's been a great game.
- 2:39:22Hubert Ginn and Matt Moore are waiting on the goal line.
- 2:39:24Linhart desperately wants a good kickoff.
- 2:39:27He's up for the ball.
- 2:39:28Swings the leg.
- 2:39:29He's hit a good sailor coming down at the Miami 10.
- 2:39:32Bounces toward Ginn at the 8, up to the 10 to the 15-20.
- 2:39:35Now the 25 to the 30, and up to the 35-yard line,
- 2:39:39and over it goes Hubert Ginn.
- 2:39:41Again, another excellent return by the return team of the Miami Dolphins,
- 2:39:45and Hubert Ginn was the ball carrier.
- 2:39:47Another former Baltimore Colts.
- 2:39:50And Dave Pair made the tackle, so Miami now has the first down,
- 2:39:54and the ball's spotted at the Miami 36.
- 2:39:58First team that scores wins in overtime at Baltimore.
- 2:40:03We play a 15-minute period.
- 2:40:05Matt Moore splits to the left side, flank to the right side fully,
- 2:40:09and the takeaway by Strzok, the give-go to a look like Benny Malone,
- 2:40:13cutting into the hole up above the 40 to about the 42-yard line,
- 2:40:16and Steve White made the stopping tackle.
- 2:40:19And it turns out not to be Malone, but Mercury Morris again.
- 2:40:25Got a look at one of the numbers, which is a 2, and Morris wears 2 up,
- 2:40:29and Malone has a 32.
- 2:40:30The ball is spotted up there at the 42-yard line,
- 2:40:33so there's a gain of some 6 yards on the first carry by Mercury Morris,
- 2:40:37second down and 4.
- 2:40:41And again Morris and Nottingham.
- 2:40:43And it turns, gives to Morris in the middle, he goes up over the 45,
- 2:40:46still on his feet at about the 49-yard line,
- 2:40:48as Mercury Morris just booms and is straight ahead.
- 2:40:51And the Dolphins have run it from their 36 to their 49 and have a first down.
- 2:40:57And Bruce Laird is credited with tackle,
- 2:40:59and Morris has done more inside running today.
- 2:41:02Vince and I have seen him do it sometimes.
- 2:41:04That's right.
- 2:41:06Indicating that his traction can be better than that in trying to get outside.
- 2:41:10He has a thing about AstroTurf, he loves to run outside,
- 2:41:12but on the dirt field he'll run inside.
- 2:41:15First down at the Miami 49, Nottingham and Morris behind quarterback,
- 2:41:18Strock, who were in overtime in Baltimore,
- 2:41:20and suddenly Strock wants to throw a shallow drop looking, can't find it,
- 2:41:23now fires for the outside, way over the head of everybody.
- 2:41:26His intended receiver was Nat Moore, and he threw it away rather wide.
- 2:41:30Second down, Jen Miami at their own 49.
- 2:41:34You know, the pressure hasn't even gotten close very often,
- 2:41:38which is an indication of the excellent job the Miami offensive line has done.
- 2:41:42Baltimore has pressured passes this year, relentlessly leads the league in sacks.
- 2:41:4856 sacks now, I guess it is, isn't it, Tom?
- 2:41:51Yes, 56 is right.
- 2:41:53Having gotten near Strock often.
- 2:41:55Now, second down, Jen still at the Miami 49, they present a split backfield,
- 2:41:59no man directly behind quarterback, Strock, on a second and ten.
- 2:42:02A takeaway by Strock, he went on the draw, he gives it to Bullock,
- 2:42:05down the middle goes Brew, and he has hit it about the Baltimore 47
- 2:42:08or eight yard line, it's taken down by Jim Chayensky.
- 2:42:14And down on the bottom of the pile, Joe Airman,
- 2:42:17and Miami keeps shoveling two and three players at a time.
- 2:42:20The ball is spotted at the Baltimore Colts 47 yard line.
- 2:42:25That's the game, up some four, third down and sixth,
- 2:42:29and here's one of those great big plays for the Baltimore Colts defensive unit.
- 2:42:34Strock brings them out, he's got Larry Seifel, he's got Norm Bullock set in behind him,
- 2:42:39he's got Solomon to one side, the left end, to the other side is Matt Moore,
- 2:42:43all ready to go, waiting for a takeaway, Strock wants to throw a straight drop,
- 2:42:47sets up, fires down the middle, it is incomplete and almost intercepted by McCloud,
- 2:42:52he was intending for Norm Bullock.
- 2:42:55Miami fourth down, sixth at the Colts 47.
- 2:43:00The defense has stopped them and Larry Seifel is on field,
- 2:43:0412-52 remaining in this overtime period.
- 2:43:16Seifel's on it now, don't fool us, fourth and five, they've got to kick it for midfield.
- 2:43:22Seifel waiting and Howard Stevens waiting at about the Baltimore 12 yard line.
- 2:43:27And that's Bob getting lower of the staff, here comes Seifel's putty,
- 2:43:31angles for the coffin corner, it looks pretty good, Stevens lets it go,
- 2:43:34it's going to go out at about the two yard line,
- 2:43:37oh they walk it up to the three, now dropping it to four.
- 2:43:40Oh what a weapon he is.
- 2:43:42Yeah he's a good one, they threw to him one time,
- 2:43:45he made an important first down for them in the regulation time,
- 2:43:48he's been a great punter, great professional, Larry Seifel,
- 2:43:51who a long time ago came out of Kentucky nine years ago.
- 2:43:56Well the Baltimore Colts are deep in their own backyard,
- 2:43:59and it's up a four yard line, 12-45 remaining.
- 2:44:03Now Miami's defense wants to try and throttle the cold offense
- 2:44:07and force good field position after the David Lee punt.
- 2:44:10Well let's see what Baltimore can do about it.
- 2:44:15Down he in motion, the give goes to the man Mitchell straight ahead,
- 2:44:18he spills through the middle and jumps up to about the eight or nine yard line
- 2:44:21before Miami is able to contain him in the colts,
- 2:44:23now shows second down and five, around their nine yard line,
- 2:44:27Bob Matheson among others made the tackle,
- 2:44:29and coming to the side line hurt is Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:44:34Mitchell a very, very important piece of football ability is down on his left knee
- 2:44:40at about the 16 yard line, and the injury is kind of hard for us to guess at right now,
- 2:44:46but he's a very durable, hard-nosed kind of a pro is Lydell Mitchell,
- 2:44:50and it's shaken off many, many hurts and now walks to the side line as if he's able to go right back in.
- 2:44:55Chuck, I don't think it's an ankle, he had a little ankle problem this week, but he's walking okay.
- 2:45:00Don McCauley moves in to take his spot on that backfield, Olds and McCauley,
- 2:45:04McCauley the deep man in the eye, Olds the front man in the eye,
- 2:45:07second and five at the Baltimore nine, car wide left, alley wide right,
- 2:45:11Jones, Yanks, gives it to McCauley, McCauley spurts through the middle,
- 2:45:15head down, cracks over the 10 to about the 12 yard line, a good determined run by Don McCauley,
- 2:45:22and here comes that guy, Mr. Mitchell again, right back into that cold backfield.
- 2:45:26No, they won't let him go in. They say get out of here Lydell, let's take a little bit of a breather.
- 2:45:30Well, they're going to measure for first down yardage,
- 2:45:33and our angle is not good enough to even make a guess who we'll just wait and see.
- 2:45:37I figure, they figure that if it's the third and short, they want McCauley in there anyway,
- 2:45:42and then they'll try to out the down briefly.
- 2:45:46Well, he's picked up the football, so obviously they missed by inches,
- 2:45:49so it'll be third down and inches, and the ball resting very close to the Baltimore 14.
- 2:45:53Chuck, look at this fog. I want to tell you, on the television picture,
- 2:45:56we do have a monitor, you can see it, it penetrates magic, that television,
- 2:46:01but in this stadium, I remind of the 1953 game when George Taliaferro was the quarterback against the Rams in the last,
- 2:46:08remember that? I remember seeing a redskin football game and working it in this fall park,
- 2:46:16we had fog like this, and they shot from the upper deck with a television camera,
- 2:46:20and all you could see were the tops of the helmets bobbing along.
- 2:46:23Third down and inches at the 14, McCauley and Old settle in behind quarterback Burt Jones,
- 2:46:29waiting for the snap, Jones turns, just to hold straight ahead, he's got first down and out for the 20 on his feet at the 24,
- 2:46:36and Jake Scott makes the tackle, boy, somebody opened the hole, and that man exploded through it for Burt Downyardy.
- 2:46:45They were thinking McCauley over the pile, and he pulled him.
- 2:46:50That's Taylor, David Taylor with a block that's thrown him,
- 2:46:54and it looks to me that that football's about at the 24, Vince, how do you see it?
- 2:46:59Not that easy. Here comes Dowdy, wide to the right side, Connors wide to the left,
- 2:47:06and we've got McCauley and Lydell Mitchell with setbacks behind the quarterback Burt Jones,
- 2:47:11the takeaway Jones rolls a bit to his right, lost the throw, looks, now rolls out of pressure,
- 2:47:15and is going to be caught, and is taken down inside the 15-yard line, great pressure from number 74,
- 2:47:21and that would be Randy Crowder, he pressured Jones, and then the tackle was thrown by Don Reese,
- 2:47:26the other tackle, so the inside man of the front four of Miami,
- 2:47:30doing the job exerting pressure on Burt Jones, and the loss is back about to the 15.
- 2:47:37Now they have to throw, and this makes it very tough, because they'll tee off,
- 2:47:41they'll have to swing it to somebody coming out of the backfield, I think.
- 2:47:45Now oddly enough, the fog is lifted just a little bit, kind of rolling in and out, like where it's seen.
- 2:47:53Far wide left, down the wide right foot backfield, nobody behind Burt Jones,
- 2:47:57second to 19, Jones drops to the five, lost the throw, men are rushing,
- 2:48:00and throws up the middle, caught by McCauley, and McCauley is held at about the 19-yard line,
- 2:48:04and that Miami defense is tenacious and very skillful.
- 2:48:08Boy, how they diagnose those plays, and getting right to it, number 59 is Doug Swift,
- 2:48:13so the pass to McCauley is spotted down at about the 19, third and 15.
- 2:48:19Now they're down to 19-yard line.
- 2:48:26Now you see, if you want to look at your monitor, they're trying to show them on television what that fog looks like,
- 2:48:30rolling in over the stadium, the time, ten minutes and two seconds, and overtime in Baltimore,
- 2:48:35seven-seven time, Miami and Boy, I'm the coach.
- 2:48:38Jones, third and 15 at the Baltimore 19, rolls to his left, lost the throw,
- 2:48:42the fighter-receiver drills his pass, caught by Raymond Chester, and he goes out of bounds at about the 37.
- 2:48:50I'll take your word for it, way to go, Raymond. Big play, first down.
- 2:48:57And the Colts have a first down, the ball spotted around the Baltimore 37,
- 2:49:02and for WCTR and Chester, South Maryland, and all of our network stations,
- 2:49:06we'll force out the base identification, this is the Metro Media Baltimore Coach football network.
- 2:49:13This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 2:49:24Number 36, first and ten, Jones on a broken play, runs out to his right and gets nailed at the 30-yard line.
- 2:49:29The Colts bust into play, Charlie Bab read it and came in and knocked Jones down with a very solid tackle at the 30-yard line.
- 2:49:35So a loose six yards on a busted play, and it's now second down, 16 at the Colts 30-yard line.
- 2:49:44Well, on two successive plays on first down now, Jones has had his trouble.
- 2:49:50He got caught and nailed in his own backfield, trying to scramble and run out of trouble.
- 2:49:55The last series before this, and on the first play and this next series, he has been dropped for another big loss of six yards.
- 2:50:03Now he's got a second and 16 at the 30-yard line, looking to find some kind of help.
- 2:50:09He takes the ball away, wants to throw a deep drop, sets up, fires, incomplete, I believe, or did he catch it at the 45-yard line?
- 2:50:17Carr comes up with the ball and they say he caught it.
- 2:50:20It was right at his feet, and Carr is credited with a catch.
- 2:50:24Great grab, and Don Shuler's pretty close to him over there.
- 2:50:27He didn't move, so I'm sure it's a good call.
- 2:50:3015 yards, third and two. Third down and two right now, and we can take a look at it on a replay here to see what kind of a catch.
- 2:50:38Oh, yes, a very good and legal catch, no doubt about it.
- 2:50:43That's a picture so long, I don't believe it they do. Very awesome.
- 2:50:48At the 45, third down, two for Baltimore.
- 2:50:51Olds and McCauley, the setbacks behind Virgil.
- 2:50:55Take away, give to Olds, left side, a jump straight ahead. He may have first down yardage.
- 2:51:00He's very, very close at about the Baltimore 47.
- 2:51:04I believe they'll stop it and measure, but Olds is reasonably close, unless they move that ball back from where I saw the spot.
- 2:51:13Right now, I'm having a little bit of a jam of football because Crowder is in my line of vision,
- 2:51:18but he's very close to it and will be within inches if in truth he does not have it at around the Baltimore 47.
- 2:51:25They stretch it, put it down, and Jones has first down and the referee says you've got it right, kid.
- 2:51:38We're told that he made the first down by, well, let's say the length of my nose, but I really don't doubt he made it quite that much.
- 2:51:46Right, that's right, man.
- 2:51:48First down after 46, no matter the outcome of this afternoon's football game.
- 2:51:54It's been a great season for Baltimore and this has been one of their very best moments.
- 2:51:59Seven-seven tie, eight minutes remaining of the overtime period.
- 2:52:02First down of the 46, Jones wants to throw a deep drop.
- 2:52:05Set fire, caught by Roger Carr on his feet at the Miami 45.
- 2:52:11Carr is there, swift as he tried to make a move on the defender, and it's taken down at the Miami 45 yard line.
- 2:52:19And that will bring up a second down and about a foot.
- 2:52:29Second down and about a foot right down for the Baltimore Colts, resting at the Miami 44.
- 2:52:40Waiting for the snap and an eye formation, the front man appears to be McCauley.
- 2:52:44The deep man is Lydell Mitchell in motion, dowdy.
- 2:52:47The turn, the gift to Mitchell, straight ahead.
- 2:52:49He is in for what looks like first down yardage around Miami 42, as the Colts ram it right down the throw to the Miami Dolphins and have a first down.
- 2:53:02Seven minutes remaining, then.
- 2:53:04First down, Baltimore, after Dolphin 43.
- 2:53:08And I've run out of room in the down charge, Vince.
- 2:53:10We're going to have to turn over another page.
- 2:53:12Turn the page and turn a page of history, Chuck.
- 2:53:15Chuck, that is that way.
- 2:53:17Well, it has been an afternoon of just sensational football.
- 2:53:23Eye formation, first down at the Miami 43, the gift to Lydell.
- 2:53:27Down the middle he goes to the Miami 40, inside maybe to the 39 yard line, and guys like Steve Sowell help make the tackle.
- 2:53:34A gain of about four on the play, and it'll be Colts second down six, the ball resting at the Miami 39.
- 2:53:40Six, 23 remaining.
- 2:53:42Second and four, second and six, rather, is about all you bargain for if you do that every time.
- 2:53:48And time is not really a problem as long as they hold on.
- 2:53:53I'll tell you, they're fighting for a championship, are the Colts and the Dolphins, and they're doing it the way championship teams should.
- 2:53:59I'll tell you, this is a fierce sixth ball.
- 2:54:01They are really two outstanding football teams playing as well as they know how.
- 2:54:06Again, out of the eye, here goes Dowdy in motion toward the backfield to pitch out to Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:54:10Makes the swing around the corner, down the 35, inside the 35, to about the 34, goes Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:54:16And he'll be about a yard short of a first down.
- 2:54:21I want to tell you, when Coons and Chester and Collette on that side,
- 2:54:25I think there's a better right side in the league in offensive units.
- 2:54:30Lasting the way for Lydell to move.
- 2:54:33Five minutes and 31 seconds on the stadium clock in overtime in Baltimore.
- 2:54:37Miami 7 and Baltimore 7.
- 2:54:40Colts with a third down, one at the Miami 34.
- 2:54:44As Jones and his teammates come up to that football.
- 2:54:48With Dill Olds and Don McCauley at setbacks behind the quarterback, Bert Jones, third down in about a yard.
- 2:54:55Waiting for the takeaway, the give goes to McCauley, right side, first down, he's on his feet at the 25,
- 2:54:59down to the 21.
- 2:55:01Oh man.
- 2:55:08Real good player, Mac.
- 2:55:11For the opportunity to perform, he can do it.
- 2:55:15He is a flasher.
- 2:55:17He should have made a yard on that play shot.
- 2:55:20And he first through and with great balance made 13 yards.
- 2:55:25At the Miami 21 yard line, first down, Baltimore.
- 2:55:33High formation, McCauley the front man, Mitchell the second man.
- 2:55:37Jones turns, gives to Mitchell right side and he is cracked coming across that 20.
- 2:55:41Maybe he got a yard or two and the clock rolls right along to 4, 23, 22 and so on.
- 2:55:46And you look for Tony Lindhardt. Where is Tony Lindhardt in case they need him, in case they stall?
- 2:55:51Right now they're relentless.
- 2:55:53Right down here with Mumford. Mumford just came up to him.
- 2:55:56Stevens has just come up to say a word.
- 2:55:59Roger Carr has come to the sideline, the close now.
- 2:56:03We'll have all those big ends in there, all those big people blocking, try to push them back in as close as you can.
- 2:56:08Don't throw the ball.
- 2:56:09Second down, M9, Baltimore at the Miami 19.
- 2:56:12They go to a double wing, the only man behind the cornerback is Jones.
- 2:56:17Takeaway, pitch out to Mitchell, right side, gets a block inside the 20,
- 2:56:21down to the 16 yard line goes Lydell Mitchell.
- 2:56:24As he tries to swing that right side, getting into it, number 59 for the Miami Dolphins,
- 2:56:30who is linebacker Doug Swift made the tackle.
- 2:56:32The ball is spotted for 16, that is third down and five.
- 2:56:36You don't have to worry too much about the middle of the field because the hash marks are out so far.
- 2:56:41There's really never an angle on a field goal as there used to be.
- 2:56:44Are they close enough right now? Everybody knows.
- 2:56:47They'll bang it one more time and...
- 2:56:50Third down and five. I find it awful stuff, Vince, to sit in a chair right now.
- 2:56:55Third down, five, double wing, only man behind cornerback is Mitchell in motion,
- 2:56:59down he back toward the backfield.
- 2:57:01Jones on a broken play, wheels out around his left end, he's running.
- 2:57:04Jones cuts down to the 16 to the 14 yard line and he falls down there.
- 2:57:08A healthy Jones might have tried for more, Chuck, but that was a good call to fall down.
- 2:57:14And here's the field goal team coming in and they could win it with about a 20 plus 10, 30, 31 yard field goal probably.
- 2:57:23Look around the sideline, all of the photographers in the world are up down there at the goal line.
- 2:57:28Jones comes to the sideline, he gets a standing elevation just a gutting kick from LSU.
- 2:57:33And now it all rests on the shoulders of a guy by the name of Tony Linhardt.
- 2:57:38Jones is hurt, too, Chuck.
- 2:57:40Dom Reyes will be the holder, this will be spotted at the 21.
- 2:57:44It is a 31 yard field goal for perhaps all of the marbles, waiting for the snap.
- 2:57:50There it is, spot, kick, it's in the air, I'll wait for the official.
- 2:57:54He did it! I don't have to tell you, Linhardt is in it today!
- 2:58:00Can you believe it? He's never had a make a pressure field goal.
- 2:58:05He's never had a make a pressure kick and he did it.
- 2:58:09Since I see things that I just can't believe.
- 2:58:12The pro football team are being mobbed by young football fans who have waited and waited and waited.
