- 0:01Speaker 1: We continue here on this Thursday afternoon here on Sports
- 0:04Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 under the zone. And on Thursday, he's
- 0:06Speaker 1: going into the football weekend. We take the opportunity to
- 0:09Speaker 1: visit with my broadcast partner on Longhorn Football and, of course,
- 0:13Speaker 1: gearing up for his own, not one but two, high school.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Telecast, Roger Wallace, sports director, KXAN. Last week.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jake bumped back with your favorite Jimmy Buffett song, One
- 0:26Speaker 1: Particular Harbor.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I had him.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Bump back with mine. That's a great call. Well, I
- 0:32Speaker 1: know it's a much more mainstream tune.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I realize that. It's the title cut of an album.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And a lot of people, but for whatever reason, that's
- 0:41Speaker 1: always kind of drawn me.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Do you have any stories?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Did he ever say anything about that particular tune, Son
- 0:50Speaker 1: of a Son of a Sailor?
- 0:52Speaker 3: Well, I mean, his grandfather was the sailor, and he's
- 0:56Speaker 3: the one that introduced him to the sea. He's got
- 0:59Speaker 3: another song, The Captain and the Kid. which is about
- 1:03Speaker 3: his grandfather and all that. But, you know, you dropped
- 1:08Speaker 3: it right before one of my favorite lines, southeast of disorder.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Isn't that great?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Followed what?
- 1:16Speaker 1: You can shake the hand of the mango man as
- 1:18Speaker 1: he greets you at the border? Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Classic. Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Great call there.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You've got a couple of high school games and we
- 1:28Speaker 1: always like to start off with those. And and I
- 1:32Speaker 1: wanted to give you a chance to talk a little
- 1:34Speaker 1: bit about them because it's two different two different orders,
- 1:37Speaker 1: so to speak, two different kinds of telecast you have
- 1:40Speaker 1: this week.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Correct.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:42Speaker 3: And three of the four teams have first-year head coaches.
- 1:45Speaker 3: So that's another thing we've been dealing with either first-year coaches.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Last week, we had a couple of second-year coaches. But
- 1:51Speaker 3: we'll be at the field tonight. We got Hendrickson against
- 1:55Speaker 3: Stony Point. Stony Point didn't even get to the half
- 1:58Speaker 3: last week against Glenn. So their first-year guy, Dustin Pleasant,
- 2:02Speaker 3: we visit with him. And he's obviously anxious to see
- 2:06Speaker 3: his guys and see what they can do. do in
- 2:08Speaker 3: a full game. And then Hendrickson had a, had a
- 2:11Speaker 3: tough opener at, at Belton under their first year head coach,
- 2:14Speaker 3: Adam Naren, who, who came here from way on west
- 2:17Speaker 3: Texas and Hereford. So, you know, Pleasant's got a lot
- 2:20Speaker 3: of history in central Texas. Uh, Naren's got a lot
- 2:23Speaker 3: of family here. In fact, his dad's a theater teacher
- 2:26Speaker 3: at Hendrickson high school. So that was part of the
- 2:28Speaker 3: draw here, but, uh, uh, yeah, that one. And then
- 2:31Speaker 3: tomorrow we'll be out at Georgetown for our KXM plus game.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And that one will be Rouse, uh, first year head
- 2:38Speaker 3: coach and then, uh, Georgetown and their veteran head coach,
- 2:41Speaker 3: Chuck Griffin.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting.
- 2:43Speaker 1: You bring up there's, there's kind of a, uh, you
- 2:46Speaker 1: might call it connective tissue there between your two games, uh,
- 2:50Speaker 1: And the connective tissue is the guy who is.
- 2:55Speaker 2: No longer there.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And when you're talking about first-year head coaches, it's interesting
- 3:04Speaker 1: where guys have to step in and take over a program.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And here's Josh Mann, who did a great job at Rouse.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And then he leaves for Belton, who does their number.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And then you have.
- 3:18Speaker 2: A first-year head coach at Rouse.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And I guess that's what we've talked about, Roger, on
- 3:22Speaker 1: many occasions, what the non-district portion of the season is
- 3:25Speaker 1: all about.
- 3:25Speaker 2: They're trying to find out what you have.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Even though you've had them in practice for a month,
- 3:30Speaker 1: now you're going up against teams. You find out how
- 3:32Speaker 1: they respond and what you've got to.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Do to fix it. Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 3: And for Rouse, you know, Craig, they're in that big district.
- 3:38Speaker 3: So they got to get after right after this one.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And that 24-6 day, Mark Hopkins, he was a longtime
- 3:45Speaker 3: assistant at Katie Tompkins. You know, there's always a story
- 3:48Speaker 3: behind a coach that makes a move. And I'm always interested,
- 3:51Speaker 3: especially when it's from a different part of the state.
- 3:54Speaker 3: And Mark Hopkins was at Katie Tompkins for nine years.
- 3:58Speaker 3: He coached Jalen Milbro. He was the offensive coordinator, but
- 4:01Speaker 3: he told me he's got four daughters and he said
- 4:03Speaker 3: he'd get his daughters to high school and then look
- 4:08Speaker 3: to advance his career as a head coach. So that
- 4:11Speaker 3: was the move he made. And so we'll see. He's
- 4:14Speaker 3: got a lot of young guys. He's playing a lot
- 4:16Speaker 3: of sophomores. So, you know, he's confident in what they
- 4:20Speaker 3: can do. They've got a junior named Auburn Davis who
- 4:23Speaker 3: put up big numbers last year as a sophomore. They
- 4:26Speaker 3: call him a fastback. He caught 79 passes, but they'll
- 4:29Speaker 3: run him out.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Of the backfield.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But, you know, he's excited. Now, he's got a tough
- 4:34Speaker 3: test tomorrow against Georgetown, and we know what they've built
- 4:38Speaker 3: up there, even though they lost, obviously, a lot last
- 4:41Speaker 3: season with two guys on the 40 acres and Jet
- 4:43Speaker 3: Walker and Caleb Shearer. Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Uh, a couple other things that come to mind about
- 4:48Speaker 1: this in review of week one. Uh, and I was
- 4:52Speaker 1: watching your telecast. I was also watching, uh, there on
- 4:55Speaker 1: KXM plus, and I was also, uh, keeping tabs on
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Westlake Englewood, California game, also on KXM plus, uh,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you guys had that going and, uh, It was interesting.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You know, Westlake was in a dogfight, and they won
- 5:09Speaker 1: the game. I don't know that we know that much
- 5:12Speaker 1: more about the Chaparrals right now. And then another team
- 5:15Speaker 1: that we really don't know anything about other than names
- 5:18Speaker 1: is Lake Travis, who, of course, after the tragic loss
- 5:21Speaker 1: of Odin Hensley— had canceled out that non-district game that
- 5:25Speaker 1: they had scheduled to get Dripping Spring. But they go
- 5:27Speaker 1: to work, and boy, what a tough opener for them
- 5:30Speaker 1: to take on a really good Weiss team that, Roger,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know, I hear coaches say this a lot, that,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know, they have the unsettling feeling when you go
- 5:41Speaker 1: into a season opener. I would imagine that the unsettling
- 5:45Speaker 1: feeling only becomes a little more unsettled when you haven't
- 5:47Speaker 1: played yet, and you're playing a team that's good and
- 5:51Speaker 1: that has already played and won a game.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're right, and Weiss is really explosive, put
- 5:57Speaker 3: up 42 on Round Rock. We know if you follow
- 6:00Speaker 3: high school football, they've got some of the best skill
- 6:01Speaker 3: guys in Central Texas led by their quarterback, Jackson Shad.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So it'll be interesting to see. Hank Carter's got his
- 6:09Speaker 3: son playing quarterback. That's going to be, I'm sure, a
- 6:12Speaker 3: little bit different for him, a defensive guy, but nevertheless,
- 6:16Speaker 3: and I'll be fascinated to see how that goes. kind
- 6:20Speaker 3: of in all transparency, we were going to have Lake
- 6:23Speaker 3: Travis and Dripping Springs last week on KXAM +. So
- 6:26Speaker 3: the obvious thing is, okay, we want to spread it around.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So even though Weiss-Lake Travis was a really attractive game,
- 6:33Speaker 3: that would have meant Lake Travis two weeks in a
- 6:35Speaker 3: row didn't quite work out that way. We always have
- 6:37Speaker 3: a great reception out of Georgetown, so excited. But yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 3: I think that's the game of the weekend in the area,
- 6:43Speaker 3: don't you?
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. I want to ask you about a couple
- 6:46Speaker 2: other matchups.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Last week, You had Leander against Pflugerville and Leander did
- 6:56Speaker 1: everything but win the football game. They were in watching.
- 7:00Speaker 1: They were really there. And then obviously another program of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the first year head coach or second year head coach
- 7:07Speaker 1: when you're losing. really struggling to get the program over
- 7:12Speaker 1: the hump. It only takes little things sometimes to derail you.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But I saw some really hopeful signs out of that team.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And the computer actually kind of likes them going down
- 7:21Speaker 1: to play Lockhart in this weekend. So maybe some building
- 7:26Speaker 1: progress for them. And I know that you know, that
- 7:30Speaker 1: Pflugerville's looking for the same thing and that Eastview's looking
- 7:34Speaker 1: for the same thing and that they've got a tough assignment.
- 7:37Speaker 1: They have to deal with Brenham, who's a really good
- 7:38Speaker 1: ball club. So, I mean, again, these are these fact-finding things,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I think, that we're seeing in the first two, three
- 7:44Speaker 1: weeks of the season.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we saw some things, especially with Leander.
- 7:49Speaker 3: As you said, they did everything Went toe-to-toe with Pflugerville.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Of course, both of these teams are breaking in new quarterbacks,
- 7:55Speaker 3: and I thought Connor Worley did a nice job, as
- 7:59Speaker 3: did Caleb Gaston for Pflugerville. Had to replace Cole Taylor.
- 8:03Speaker 3: He's got some weapons. Isaac Montgomery is a dangerous receiver.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Braxton Hernandez is a lightning-quick receiver out on the edge.
- 8:12Speaker 3: So I think there's hope. I just think it's a
- 8:14Speaker 3: numbers game, Craig. A lot of times you have these
- 8:17Speaker 3: schools that just have to build up the numbers, and
- 8:20Speaker 3: we're seeing that with Rouse. as well, especially as they
- 8:23Speaker 3: start to play a six-day schedule. But I'm sure they
- 8:27Speaker 3: had to be pleased at Leander with the effort they
- 8:30Speaker 3: put out.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Among the 5A games I'm kind of intrigued by is
- 8:34Speaker 1: Anderson and Pflugerville. And we saw what Coach Hatcher did
- 8:38Speaker 1: last year in getting Anderson through and getting them into
- 8:41Speaker 1: the playoffs and won a playoff game. And again, Pflugerville
- 8:45Speaker 1: did come out with the win, although probably it's going
- 8:49Speaker 1: to be a deal where Charles Taylor's looking for some improvement.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But I think that's a good week two matchup.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Anderson's, they built a nice program there.
- 8:59Speaker 3: And I think that's, kind of what, what Donald Hatcher
- 9:02Speaker 3: has been talking about. You don't want, you know, the
- 9:04Speaker 3: one hit wonders or things like that. And they've got, uh,
- 9:07Speaker 3: Cove Darby Shire back at quarterback and, and some other weapons.
- 9:11Speaker 3: So I think that's going to be tough. Uh, honestly,
- 9:13Speaker 3: it's going to be tough one for, for Pflugerville. You
- 9:15Speaker 3: got the, uh, you got the renovated house park. Uh,
- 9:19Speaker 3: if you haven't been down, uh, down Lamar and looked up,
- 9:22Speaker 3: you might, you might want to be careful cause you
- 9:24Speaker 3: won't believe your eyes when you look at, uh, that
- 9:26Speaker 3: beautiful press box on the other side there. But, uh, But, yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I think that's also one of the better games.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Of the weekend.
- 9:33Speaker 3: We'll see if Pflugerville can hang with them.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it. Roger Wallace.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Okay, I want to turn our attention to the Longhorns
- 9:39Speaker 1: since the season opener is coming up here on Saturday.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And you had your sit down this morning with Sark.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Of course, I had the coaches show that we recorded
- 9:48Speaker 1: yesterday that will air this afternoon at 530 Longhorn Weekly.
- 9:52Speaker 1: The vibe that I'm getting from Sark is, and when
- 9:56Speaker 1: I opened the show, I said, hard to believe it,
- 9:59Speaker 1: now you're 6'7. And he pointed out that he's been
- 10:03Speaker 1: at Texas longer than he has been at any other job.
- 10:08Speaker 1: He was five years at Washington. And so this will
- 10:11Speaker 1: be his sixth season. So he was talking about how
- 10:14Speaker 1: he's been there longer than any other job and how
- 10:17Speaker 1: He said, remember when I was coming in here after
- 10:18Speaker 1: we lost to Kansas 57-56? The program has clearly come
- 10:24Speaker 1: a long way since then. And I know he's grateful
- 10:26Speaker 1: for that and all the other people in that. But clearly, obviously,
- 10:29Speaker 1: they have their goals in mind. But I also got
- 10:32Speaker 1: this vibe that he is not only kind of loose
- 10:36Speaker 1: and confident and relaxed, but also he's pretty eager.
- 10:39Speaker 2: He's pretty anxious to see this group on the field
- 10:41Speaker 2: on Saturday.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I would think when you bring in 22 portal
- 10:46Speaker 3: guys and then you got to figure that most of
- 10:48Speaker 3: those were brought in to produce right away. And with
- 10:52Speaker 3: what they have coming back, obviously with Arch and some
- 10:56Speaker 3: of the skill guys and the guy named Colin Simmons
- 10:58Speaker 3: on the other side of the ball, Jelani McDonald.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he's anxious.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Plus, the other thing is they don't get to see
- 11:04Speaker 3: anything that replicates what the NFL or high school gets,
- 11:07Speaker 3: even though NFL doesn't. They don't play their starters. But still,
- 11:09Speaker 3: they get to see him against another team in preseason games,
- 11:13Speaker 3: in the workouts.
- 11:15Speaker 2: High school gets the scrimmages.
- 11:16Speaker 3: They get none of that. So I think he's anxious.
- 11:19Speaker 3: He's interested. He's excited. And he's throwing a real must-champ defense.
- 11:24Speaker 3: And I think fans pick out what you're most interested in.
- 11:27Speaker 3: There's a lot to choose from Saturday.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I had somebody ask me on another program that I
- 11:32Speaker 1: was a guest on, you know, what one player– am
- 11:37Speaker 1: I most, other than the most obvious of players like
- 11:40Speaker 1: Arch or a couple of the others, or Colin Simmons,
- 11:43Speaker 1: you know, what player am I most interested in seeing
- 11:47Speaker 1: how they do and how they perform? And the question
- 11:52Speaker 1: also went, if there's a dark horse or somebody that's
- 11:58Speaker 1: not getting much mention, and I said, well, When you're
- 12:00Speaker 1: in Austin, Texas, I mean, every player in some way, shape,
- 12:03Speaker 1: or form is getting mentioned one way or another.
- 12:05Speaker 2: How is so-and-so coming along? How is this guy?
- 12:08Speaker 1: How do you feel about your backup offensive guards? And,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know, all those kinds of things. But one of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the areas that I talked about was the running back spot.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I am curious to see. I know they want to
- 12:19Speaker 1: get back to running the ball better. And certainly the
- 12:21Speaker 1: high-profile names of Hollywood Smothers and Raleigh Brown come to mind.
- 12:27Speaker 1: But Sark has not been reluctant to talk about Derek Cooper.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And I think he feels confident he's going to have
- 12:35Speaker 1: Cooper on the field. uh, on Saturday, you know, this
- 12:39Speaker 1: morning on, uh, Sarge media zoom, somebody asked him about
- 12:42Speaker 1: the backup quarterbacks and said, would they be on the field? Uh,
- 12:47Speaker 1: even at regardless of score. And he said, no, it's
- 12:49Speaker 1: going to depend on how the game is going. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: don't think that's going to be the case with Derek Cooper.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I think they're going to have him out there on
- 12:56Speaker 1: the field in addition to Smothers and Browns. How about
- 12:59Speaker 1: your thoughts, uh, Brown? How about your thoughts on the
- 13:02Speaker 1: running back spot? Yeah, for sure.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I think, I think Sark said early that he's just
- 13:07Speaker 3: a pretty natural football player, and he brings a different element.
- 13:11Speaker 3: He's bigger than those guys, not only taller, but probably
- 13:14Speaker 3: about 2'12, 2'15. But, you know, when we had some
- 13:19Speaker 3: chances to watch them in practice, the viewing windows they
- 13:23Speaker 3: gave us, the one thing that stuck out to me
- 13:26Speaker 3: is he catches the ball. I'll quote our old buddy,
- 13:29Speaker 3: Greg Davis. He looks like a natural pass catcher, which
- 13:32Speaker 3: you don't always get. from a running back. Um, so yes,
- 13:35Speaker 3: he would be one. If you ask, if you asked
- 13:37Speaker 3: me without even qualifying it on offense, that would have
- 13:40Speaker 3: been one of the guys. And then I'll flip it
- 13:42Speaker 3: to defense and probably a lot of it's because of
- 13:45Speaker 3: what's happened, but Justin Cryer, uh, now the green dot
- 13:48Speaker 3: at middle linebacker, a guy that, you know, came in
- 13:50Speaker 3: from Florida state, but they thought to Anthony Smith was
- 13:54Speaker 3: going to be that guy. So I'm, I'm anxious to
- 13:56Speaker 3: see Cryer and how he and He and Biles compliment
- 13:59Speaker 3: each other at linebacker.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good call as well. Now, I ask
- 14:04Speaker 2: you this.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Every year, there is a player that quickly becomes... kind
- 14:13Speaker 1: of a media darling, and the reason the player becomes
- 14:17Speaker 1: a media darling is twofold. First of all, he's very
- 14:20Speaker 1: popular with his teammates, and then second, he's very glib
- 14:24Speaker 1: and relaxed in the media availability, so that helps out
- 14:27Speaker 1: the media asking the questions. Obviously, I'm talking about Hiro Kanu,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and he just seems like a natural end of the role,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and everybody seems to like hearing from him.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And I think he's anxious to be the fun loving
- 14:40Speaker 3: guy off the field and then, you know, wreck some
- 14:43Speaker 3: havoc on the field.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That's why he came back.
- 14:45Speaker 3: He didn't come back to tell us that once you
- 14:47Speaker 3: get to before eight slices of pizza, it's only a
- 14:50Speaker 3: snack when you're eating pizza, like he did on Monday. But,
- 14:55Speaker 3: but yeah, he, and you know, he came on last year,
- 14:57Speaker 3: but he's, he's going to have to accept a bigger role.
- 15:00Speaker 3: He's going to have to be a leader. He talked
- 15:01Speaker 3: about that as well, but, but yeah, I think he
- 15:03Speaker 3: can be the best of both worlds for Texas and,
- 15:07Speaker 3: I'm sure he's really anxious to next weekend as well, obviously,
- 15:12Speaker 3: with Ohio State, but I agree 100% about that.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And then one other thing I want to ask you about,
- 15:16Speaker 1: because there hasn't been that much talked about. The question
- 15:20Speaker 1: finally came up on Monday with regard to special teams
- 15:23Speaker 1: and in specific the kicking game. Now, we know obviously
- 15:27Speaker 1: Ryan Niblett's going to be dangerous back there as a kicker,
- 15:31Speaker 1: punt returner, and Sark mentioned this morning that Smothers could
- 15:33Speaker 1: be back there as well, depending.
- 15:35Speaker 2: On the situations.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But we've heard almost nothing throughout camp on Giannis Spetic,
- 15:41Speaker 1: or Gio as they call him, and Max Shemento, the punter.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Those guys are veteran guys coming in. And yet, Sarkis just,
- 15:49Speaker 1: when asked, he just said, yeah, they've been very consistent,
- 15:52Speaker 1: a model of consistency, but it's been kind of quiet.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And a lot of people like it that way. There
- 15:56Speaker 1: was a football coach here one time that refused to
- 15:58Speaker 1: name his punter, even though he was all world conference.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But point being is that those guys kind of quietly
- 16:06Speaker 1: under the radar have done their job in fall camp.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Now we get to see him when it matters in
- 16:11Speaker 1: a game.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And you know how important that is. And it's going
- 16:14Speaker 3: to come down to something at some point where there's
- 16:18Speaker 3: going to be a huge moment for, you know, Plunter's
- 16:21Speaker 3: a little different, Shementu, the Florida State transfer, but Spedic
- 16:25Speaker 3: comes in with a lot of accolades from Memphis. And so, yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 3: I mean, you're right. It has been all quiet and
- 16:34Speaker 3: it'll be noisy if something doesn't go, you know, the
