- 0:21Speaker 1: We spoke to Mike Golick two weeks ago, but boy,
- 0:23Speaker 1: do I miss him. It feels like forever. I mean,
- 0:25Speaker 1: he greets you with a burp. He is getting the
- 0:27Speaker 1: TVs behind him all organized. He's laughing at Taylor over
- 0:33Speaker 1: the idea of Taylor rushing for 1,000 yards. If Patrick Richard,
- 0:37Speaker 1: am I saying the name right?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:39Speaker 1: If that was his fullback, Mike, I heard you talking
- 0:42Speaker 1: about him today, but Taylor said yesterday that if Rashard
- 0:46Speaker 1: was the fullback at North Carolina when he was playing
- 0:48Speaker 1: at North Carolina, he would have moved from receiver to
- 0:51Speaker 1: running back and would have rushed for 1,000 yards.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Your thoughts?
- 0:55Speaker 2: My thoughts was when would he have woken up from
- 0:57Speaker 2: that dream? All of a sudden, he's Uncle Rico from
- 1:02Speaker 2: Napoleon Dynamite.
- 1:05Speaker 3: The goal, extend to noon Eastern.
- 1:07Speaker 1: On ESPN Radio, Notre Dame on Saturday, NFL on Sundays.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Mike, no time to watch football. What are you doing?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Oh, let me tell you. Red Zone Channel is my go-to.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Before I do the Sunday night game, I'm laying in
- 1:22Speaker 2: my hotel watching the Red Zone Channel. And on the
- 1:25Speaker 2: regular TV, I have it on either one of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: games on the network. So I'm getting my fill.
- 1:30Speaker 1: What'd you make of Texas-Ohio State? I felt bad for
- 1:34Speaker 1: Arch through three quarters, but man, did he have a
- 1:36Speaker 1: coming out party in that fourth quarter.
- 1:37Speaker 3: What a game, Mike.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You know, they always say, was it more one or
- 1:41Speaker 2: the other? But normally it's somewhere in between. It's Texas
- 1:45Speaker 2: taking their foot off the gas. I mean, it's Ohio
- 1:48Speaker 2: State taking their foot off the gas and Texas starting
- 1:51Speaker 2: to play well. That was amazing. Kidd hits three field
- 1:55Speaker 2: goals for Ohio State and then misses a 45-yarder to
- 1:58Speaker 2: keep Texas In reach. That was a game that lived up.
- 2:02Speaker 2: You hope the big game of the week is like
- 2:04Speaker 2: this week, LSU at Mississippi, which has so much more
- 2:07Speaker 2: on it than just a football game, that they live
- 2:10Speaker 2: up to the hype, and that one lived up to
- 2:11Speaker 2: the hype.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We'll get to the NFL in just a second. Mike,
- 2:14Speaker 1: just to stay on that game for a second, why
- 2:16Speaker 1: does this not happen? Why does it not happen more often?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Why does Ohio State or Ryan Day tell his defense, hey,
- 2:23Speaker 1: the momentum has swung Texas his way. Let that team
- 2:27Speaker 1: score and give ourselves– as much time as we can
- 2:30Speaker 1: to drive the field and come back and get a
- 2:32Speaker 1: win here.
- 2:33Speaker 2: It's so against the thought process, especially as a former
- 2:37Speaker 2: defensive player like I was, to let somebody score.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But you have to play chess, not checkers, right?
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And say, okay, well, there's part of it, how much
- 2:47Speaker 2: do you trust your defense to make stops at the
- 2:50Speaker 2: one-yard line? And then there's, okay, the clock has to
- 2:53Speaker 2: get involved. It's very difficult in the sport to– not
- 2:58Speaker 2: for the game, but for that instance, wave the white
- 3:01Speaker 2: flag and say, we're going to let you do something
- 3:04Speaker 2: that we are basically, well, now you can say paid
- 3:07Speaker 2: to stop you from doing. But in the macro sense,
- 3:12Speaker 2: it makes more sense to do to give yourself your
- 3:15Speaker 2: offense more time, especially when you have a receiver like
- 3:19Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith. Right. who you just throw 50-50 balls, and
- 3:23Speaker 2: they're like 70-30 balls in his favor just to get
- 3:26Speaker 2: you in field goal range. Yes.
- 3:28Speaker 3: By the way, Texas wasn't much better. They left too
- 3:30Speaker 3: much time for Ohio State.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Oh, I could not believe how they weren't letting the
- 3:35Speaker 2: clock run down. I'm like, do you know who that
- 3:38Speaker 2: wide receiver is on Ohio State? Leave them a second.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I mean, I was shocked at that as well. Yes.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Um, speaking of shocked Oregon, losing the way they lost
- 3:50Speaker 1: to Oklahoma state.
- 3:52Speaker 3: That was shocking.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Mike, like I'm not, Oregon will probably still make the playoff,
- 3:56Speaker 1: but that was alarming.
- 3:57Speaker 3: If you're an Oregon duck fan.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Oh, incredibly alarming. I got Oklahoma state team that lost
- 4:02Speaker 2: by double digits to Tulsa in week one. And, and
- 4:06Speaker 2: I don't know if they'll make, if they'll make the playoffs,
- 4:09Speaker 2: it all depends on obviously rankings. And if you could
- 4:13Speaker 2: win the, uh, win the conference, but you drop down
- 4:17Speaker 2: to 21. Yeah. I mean, and do we think, now
- 4:20Speaker 2: if it's their only loss, they'll start to obviously creep
- 4:22Speaker 2: back up. But I mean, do we, the way they
- 4:26Speaker 2: play there, I mean, they got USC coming up in
- 4:29Speaker 2: a couple of weeks. Now USC, Maiava, their quarterback has
- 4:33Speaker 2: been outstanding, but they haven't really played anybody yet and
- 4:36Speaker 2: they really haven't gotten tested. But Oregon has Ohio State.
- 4:41Speaker 2: In November, they have Michigan who played well. So I
- 4:44Speaker 2: don't know. I mean, you dropped out of that top 12.
- 4:47Speaker 2: You know, that's going to be a long haul for them.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Mike, the other game of note from the college football weekend,
- 4:55Speaker 4: Michigan beating Oklahoma. Everybody kind of had Michigan left for dead,
- 4:59Speaker 4: and then Bryce Underwood and Kyle Whittingham pull out that
- 5:01Speaker 4: win in the big house. Was that more about Michigan
- 5:05Speaker 4: responding or the Oklahoma offense just being absolutely dreadful?
- 5:10Speaker 2: I think the Oklahoma offense was awful. Now, these are
- 5:14Speaker 2: two good defenses. It's not like either one of these
- 5:16Speaker 2: offenses was unbelievable, right? It was 17-10. The Michigan offense
- 5:22Speaker 2: still not really getting on track, but that Oklahoma defense
- 5:26Speaker 2: is really good. But I was surprised at the Oklahoma offense.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I thought they would do a little bit more than
- 5:32Speaker 2: they did. Only had 100 yards rushing, not even 200
- 5:34Speaker 2: yards passing. Now, You have to credit the Michigan defense
- 5:39Speaker 2: for that. And that was, if there was a weak
- 5:43Speaker 2: spot on the Oklahoma team, it wasn't the defense. It
- 5:45Speaker 2: was the offense. So, yeah, that was surprising. I picked
- 5:50Speaker 2: Oklahoma in what I thought would be an easy win.
- 5:53Speaker 3: What did you make of Lane Kiffin?
- 5:54Speaker 1: This is classic Lane Kiffin as he tries to ratchet
- 5:57Speaker 1: up the stakes for this weekend's game where he says, hey,
- 6:00Speaker 1: Mississippi has the pressure on them.
- 6:02Speaker 3: They're the better team. They have two Heisman Trophy candidates
- 6:05Speaker 3: over there. He was basically– he was patting himself on
- 6:08Speaker 3: the back.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He was patting himself on the back when he said pressure.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He said our team won seven games last year. He
- 6:17Speaker 2: should have then whispered that I didn't coach. That other
- 6:20Speaker 2: team won 13 games last year. that I coached. I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 2: he was just subtly throwing his lines in there. But
- 6:28Speaker 2: what he said is pretty true. All the vitriol in
- 6:32Speaker 2: a rivalry like this is going to be on Lane,
- 6:35Speaker 2: without question. It's like when Lane went back to Tennessee
- 6:38Speaker 2: after leaving Tennessee for Ole Miss and did that game.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And there was a ton of stuff thrown on the field.
- 6:46Speaker 2: That's what I just hope happens. The governor of Louisiana
- 6:49Speaker 2: kind of tongue-in-cheek saying we're going to need to fly
- 6:51Speaker 2: them in a C-130 and the security. They're going to
- 6:54Speaker 2: have to, you know, it's college, college. uh fans it's
- 7:00Speaker 2: like a mob mentality yes if somebody starts doing something
- 7:04Speaker 2: bad others are going to follow so i am a
- 7:06Speaker 2: little bit worried about it crossing the line.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So am i like i think that's real i think
- 7:13Speaker 1: mississippi fans are really upset.
- 7:15Speaker 3: With lane and lane should have a bodyguard with them
- 7:18Speaker 3: or two or three yes i completely.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Agree right absolutely i mean freaking college fans They email
- 7:25Speaker 2: death threats to kickers when they miss field goals. I mean,
- 7:29Speaker 2: some of the fans just needs to be locked up.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You know, you say, oh, it's fanatic.
- 7:35Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 7:36Speaker 2: That's crossing a line to crazy and you should not
- 7:38Speaker 2: be anywhere near a stadium.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Let's go to the NFL.
- 7:42Speaker 1: We were laughing earlier that Patrick Mahomes last night seemed
- 7:45Speaker 1: more concerned about his uninjured arm than he did about
- 7:49Speaker 1: his injured knee.
- 7:50Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 7:52Speaker 2: Well, I mean, You know, when you have major surgery
- 7:55Speaker 2: on something, I've always talked about this because I had
- 7:58Speaker 2: a couple of them, and the doctor can tell you
- 8:01Speaker 2: you're good to go back. Right. But you've got to
- 8:04Speaker 2: get over a mental hump. Yes. And even for a quarterback,
- 8:08Speaker 2: it's even more because in fall camp, in training camp,
- 8:13Speaker 2: they're never getting hit. At least, you know, if you're
- 8:16Speaker 2: in a different position, you can go live at some
- 8:18Speaker 2: point during camp. But quarterbacks always got a red jersey on.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You're not hitting them. So he's not really getting 100% full,
- 8:25Speaker 2: not only contact, but movement on the field until a
- 8:29Speaker 2: real game. And that's when you have to cross that
- 8:32Speaker 2: mental hurdle. And like he told Andy Reid, I need
- 8:35Speaker 2: to get the first hit out of the way because
- 8:37Speaker 2: he didn't get any hits leading up to that. This
- 8:40Speaker 2: was basically the first hit he took in a real
- 8:44Speaker 2: live game. So you have to jump over that hurdle.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And boy, oh boy, I mean, listen. Obviously, the story
- 8:53Speaker 2: of him coming back from the injury is huge. But
- 8:55Speaker 2: what they got in Kenneth Walker is just amazing. Here's
- 9:00Speaker 2: an amazing stat. He had two runs of over 20 yards.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Last year, Kansas City as a team had one.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:09Speaker 2: One as a team runs over 20 yards, and he
- 9:11Speaker 2: had two last night. Boy, what a– and I thought
- 9:14Speaker 2: because the offensive line got shifted around when Josh Simmons
- 9:19Speaker 2: was hurt. Khalil Benton went over to left tackle. So
- 9:23Speaker 2: they changed it around a little bit. They did a
- 9:26Speaker 2: really nice job.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Mike, the bigger story for me from that game was
- 9:31Speaker 1: the Broncos and just how bad that offense was.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah, right? Oh, the offense and, quite honestly, the defense. Yes. Again,
- 9:38Speaker 2: this was an offensive line in KC that made a
- 9:40Speaker 2: couple of changes. You're going up against a team the
- 9:43Speaker 2: last two years have led the league in sacks and
- 9:45Speaker 2: is one of the top defenses, and they couldn't stop them.
- 9:49Speaker 2: They missed 19 tackles. They missed 11 tackles on Kenneth
- 9:55Speaker 2: Walker alone. But 19 total. Very uncharacteristic. and you know
- 10:02Speaker 2: you had Davis Webb as the play caller on offense
- 10:05Speaker 2: so you have to keep an eye on that one
- 10:08Speaker 2: of the things that affected Bo Nix last year Sean
- 10:11Speaker 2: Payton's offensive play calling is like.
- 10:14Speaker 3: A book right right yes so there.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Were times this young quarterback would need it repeated, they
- 10:19Speaker 2: would get to the line of scrimmage late. So they
- 10:21Speaker 2: were looking to get past that, but that still happened
- 10:25Speaker 2: a couple of times. You want a quarterback, especially a
- 10:27Speaker 2: young quarterback, to be at the line longer rather than shorter,
- 10:31Speaker 2: to go through his progressions, go through some cadence to
- 10:35Speaker 2: try and get the defense to give away their disguise,
- 10:38Speaker 2: but they weren't able to do that much.
- 10:40Speaker 1: How long does Sean Payton allow that to continue before
- 10:43Speaker 1: he takes the play-calling responsibilities back?
- 10:46Speaker 2: Boy, that's the truth. Listen, now we sit there and
- 10:50Speaker 2: we look at that division and the Raiders, obviously, we
- 10:54Speaker 2: don't think are going to be an issue. The Chargers,
- 10:57Speaker 2: we build them up every year, and then, my God,
- 10:59Speaker 2: your Jets beat them, for God's sake. Wait, was it
- 11:02Speaker 2: your Jets?
- 11:03Speaker 3: No, we beat the Titans. No, the Cardinals.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You beat the Titans. I'm sorry, the Cardinals beat the Chargers.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Same thing.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Well, no, a little worse, I think.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I don't know. How about both New York teams winning
- 11:15Speaker 2: as an aside? But, yeah, to your point, I mean–
- 11:20Speaker 2: We thought it was a three-team division, but it's again,
- 11:24Speaker 2: one week, it's overreaction week. We do after one week,
- 11:26Speaker 2: but Kansas City, it looks like they have regained.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Mike, we always hear that defenses are supposed to be
- 11:31Speaker 4: ahead of offense early in the season. The NFL tied
- 11:34Speaker 4: its all-time week one scoring record.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 11:37Speaker 4: And we're a Javante Williams taunting penalty away from having
- 11:41Speaker 4: that record where Aubrey backs all the way up for
- 11:44Speaker 4: the for the kick.
- 11:45Speaker 2: How do you explain? I love you blaming it on him.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It's his fault.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yes. It is his fault.
- 11:50Speaker 4: How do you explain all the scoring that we saw
- 11:52Speaker 4: in week one?
- 11:52Speaker 2: You know what? Taylor, I wish I could. I wish
- 11:55Speaker 2: I could because it's always been kind of a thing
- 11:58Speaker 2: that the defense has been ahead of the offense. You
- 12:01Speaker 2: would see the defense ahead of the offense and you
- 12:03Speaker 2: would see a number of penalties, which you did in
- 12:05Speaker 2: the game I called Cowboys and Giants. There were 19
- 12:08Speaker 2: penalties total. I think 10 for the Giants, 9 for
- 12:11Speaker 2: the Cowboys. a little over 200 yards. It was like
- 12:13Speaker 2: that in a few games. But I wish I knew
- 12:16Speaker 2: the reason. Look at the Texans' defense, best defense in
- 12:21Speaker 2: the NFL, giving up all the points. Now, the Bills
- 12:23Speaker 2: are a good team, but still, Texans have a heck
- 12:26Speaker 2: of a defense. Denver's defense, no show. I mean, I
- 12:30Speaker 2: wish I had an answer for that, and as an
- 12:32Speaker 2: analyst and former player, I'm supposed to. But you know what?
- 12:35Speaker 2: I don't. I was stunned. Mike, give some hope to Cleveland.
- 12:40Speaker 2: There is none.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Because that was one of the worst displays of something
- 12:45Speaker 1: they call football that I've seen, and they're still going
- 12:49Speaker 1: to stick with Deshaun Watson.
- 12:52Speaker 2: You know when your parents say, if you don't have
- 12:54Speaker 2: anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yep, yep.
- 12:57Speaker 4: But we don't say that here, so rip him.
- 13:00Speaker 3: He's not. You told him to give him hope.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Listen, I was keeping my mouth shut there. It's a
- 13:08Speaker 2: hockey change offensive line. I don't know if your quarterback
- 13:13Speaker 2: of the future is in the room. Shador Sanders is
- 13:16Speaker 2: going to get a shot. It's just a matter of when.
- 13:20Speaker 2: The defense, you lose a defensive player of the year.
- 13:22Speaker 2: You still have some decent pieces on that defense. It's
- 13:27Speaker 2: a mess. They're an absolute mess. So what they need
- 13:31Speaker 2: to do... Is to find out if they have a
- 13:33Speaker 2: quarterback that goes on or if the quarterback is going
- 13:36Speaker 2: to be, the quarterback room is going to be completely different. Right.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Their hope is holding a clipboard right now. I mean,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's really, yes, it's absurd. Mike, what'd you make of,
- 13:56Speaker 1: since you called the Giants-Cowboys game, it was so impressive,
- 14:00Speaker 1: the Giants were, John Harbaugh, stamped his imprint on that team,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and he did it very, very quickly. But what did
- 14:05Speaker 1: you make of Jackson Dart? If he's going to play
- 14:07Speaker 1: like that, the Giants are going to contend for the playoffs, Mike.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Well, I thought one thing I said on the broadcast,
- 14:13Speaker 2: Jackson Dart, and you look for progress from rookie year
- 14:16Speaker 2: to the second year, and he made better decisions. Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Ran out of bounds a couple times. Now, he can't
- 14:24Speaker 2: help getting late hit by one of the Cowboys in
- 14:26Speaker 2: another dumb penalty, but he was running out of bounds,
- 14:29Speaker 2: running out of bounds both sides. sliding feet first a
- 14:32Speaker 2: couple times. A couple times he went head first, but
- 14:34Speaker 2: I get it. You know, when you're that close to
- 14:36Speaker 2: a first down marker, occasionally you'll go for it. You
- 14:40Speaker 2: can't completely take away his toughness, but he made better decisions.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Threw the ball well. He and Isaiah likely seem to
- 14:49Speaker 2: have a great quarterback-receiver relationship. Eight targets, eight receptions. Isaiah
- 14:54Speaker 2: likely a great bringover with Harbaugh from Baltimore. But, yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean, you have Riccardo at fullback leading the way
- 15:03Speaker 2: for Scataboo, who you just wonder, hopefully he can make
- 15:07Speaker 2: it through a season because he just drops his shoulder
- 15:09Speaker 2: on frigging everybody. Yes. And the defense, Denard Wilson, the
- 15:14Speaker 2: new defensive coordinator, he came over from Tennessee. Especially on
- 15:18Speaker 2: known passing downs, he likes a four-man rush into drop seven,
- 15:22Speaker 2: which helps in coverage, but they don't get a ton
- 15:25Speaker 2: of pressure on the quarterback in a four-man rush. And
- 15:27Speaker 2: they have pass rushers too, so that's an area I'm
- 15:32Speaker 2: a little concerned at. Like last year they had 91
- 15:35Speaker 2: tackles for losses. They'll make plays on the other side
- 15:37Speaker 2: of the line, but not a ton of sacks.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Mike, two brothers disappointed their families this weekend. Jim Harbaugh
- 15:45Speaker 4: with the Chargers and Matt LaFleur with the Packers. If
- 15:48Speaker 4: I asked you which of those two teams is more
- 15:50Speaker 4: likely to make the playoffs, would you say the Packers
- 15:54Speaker 4: or the Chargers?
- 15:56Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Good question.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I think the Packers have better players overall. Now, as
- 16:05Speaker 2: I said going into that game when we were previewing
- 16:08Speaker 2: week one, you don't know when you're getting Josh Jacobs back.
- 16:12Speaker 2: May not be for a while, and for good reason, obviously,
- 16:15Speaker 2: because what he did off the field is certainly way
- 16:17Speaker 2: more important to talk about than on the field. But
- 16:21Speaker 2: we're a sports show. We're talking football. They're not going
- 16:24Speaker 2: to have him for a while. And Micah Parsons is
- 16:26Speaker 2: out at least six weeks. You look at that defense
- 16:29Speaker 2: getting to the passer after Michael went out, it was
- 16:31Speaker 2: almost non-existent. So you have a couple of pieces missing
- 16:34Speaker 2: for a while. But I do think they have some
- 16:37Speaker 2: talent to make up for that. But it also is
- 16:41Speaker 2: the most competitive division in all of football, without question.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Without question. So that could make it tough. But I
- 16:50Speaker 2: don't know. There's something about trusting the Chargers. I'm just...
- 16:54Speaker 2: Running low on that.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Why would you trust the Chargers? Yeah. We were laughing.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Taylor mentioned LeFleur.
- 17:03Speaker 1: The parents, they went to Mike LeFleur's game in Arizona.
- 17:09Speaker 1: They didn't go to the Packers game. And Taylor thinks
- 17:11Speaker 1: they like that son better.
- 17:13Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Well, listen, I've always said this. They say parents love
- 17:17Speaker 2: their kids the same. No, they don't. I make a
- 17:21Speaker 2: list every day between Jake and Sidney and Mike. Right.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And even I'll throw the dogs in there occasionally as well. Yes.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And the kids will be behind the dogs. Right. Oh,
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'm sure it was because, Mike, it was his first
- 17:33Speaker 2: real game as a head coach. I get it. Yes.
- 17:36Speaker 2: And what a game. What a win for them. Right.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I mean, how about that?
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yeah. What are the rankings today? I mean– Is Sid one?
- 17:45Speaker 2: Normally, Mike says something dumb that I'll disagree with on
- 17:48Speaker 2: the show every day that'll put him down to three.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's unfair because he's working with you.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I know.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I know.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I know. Listen, I didn't say, hey, life's not fair.
- 17:56Speaker 2: If you want fair, go to a fair. Go watch a,
- 17:59Speaker 2: you know, go get a deep fried Oreo. You know,
- 18:04Speaker 2: he knows he's playing behind the eight ball every day. Right.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Borg Mike.
- 18:10Speaker 2: But he gets to work with you. Poor Mike.
- 18:12Speaker 3: No, there's no poor Mike.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Mikey asked a very interesting question.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I've been thinking about it all night. Texans fans.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I have.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I've been thinking about it, Mike, because you know the
- 18:25Speaker 1: defense is good, Mike, and occasionally you're going to run
- 18:27Speaker 1: into Josh Allen, and that happens. Josh Allen can do
- 18:30Speaker 1: it against any defense. But if you're a Texan fan,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the big question you had was about your quarterback.
- 18:35Speaker 3: The quarterback played pretty good, not good enough, but played well.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And if he plays like that and they put up
- 18:40Speaker 1: 30 points, they're going to win most games that they
- 18:42Speaker 1: play this season. So should Texan fans walk out of
- 18:46Speaker 1: that game feeling happy or disappointed?
- 18:49Speaker 2: Obviously disappointed in the loss, but C.J. Stroud played better
- 18:54Speaker 2: because the last look they had at him was the playoffs,
- 18:57Speaker 2: which was awful, right? Yes. And my son Mike made
- 19:01Speaker 2: a bold prediction at the beginning of the year that C.J.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Stroud is going to reset the quarterback pay market after
- 19:07Speaker 2: this year when he can get paid. And if he
- 19:09Speaker 2: has a good year, he very well may. this could
- 19:12Speaker 2: have been a preview to the AFC title game. Would
- 19:14Speaker 2: anybody be shocked that they meant the AFC title game? No,
- 19:18Speaker 2: you wouldn't at all. And quite honestly, you would ask
- 19:21Speaker 2: the defense to pick up the slack, which is stunning
- 19:23Speaker 2: because it was the best defense in football last year
- 19:26Speaker 2: of all the points they gave up to that Buffalo offense. But, yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 2: I think Texans fans, it's one game, you're just fine.
- 19:34Speaker 1: It's interesting with Josh Allen because I was telling a
- 19:37Speaker 1: friend yesterday– I've done this with Dan Marino.
- 19:40Speaker 3: You know how much I love rings. It validates everything.
- 19:43Speaker 1: But if Josh Allen doesn't win a ring, I will
- 19:46Speaker 1: be willing to say once his playing career is done
- 19:49Speaker 1: that he was one of the all-time great quarterbacks. One
- 19:51Speaker 1: of the best quarterbacks that I've ever seen. I've only
- 19:54Speaker 1: said that about Marina, who didn't win one, went to one,
- 19:56Speaker 1: lost to the Niners. I will say that about Josh Allen. Mike,
- 19:59Speaker 1: we've never seen anything like that at that position.
- 20:02Speaker 2: And I'm different than you. I don't put Super Bowl
- 20:05Speaker 2: wins on quarterbacks. I don't think that's fair, but everybody's
- 20:09Speaker 2: entitled to their opinion. Oh, yeah. I mean, he is incredible. Listen,
- 20:14Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson's got two MVPs and no Super Bowl ring either.
- 20:19Speaker 2: So you have two excellent quarterbacks in the AFC who
- 20:21Speaker 2: are still looking for hardware. But I completely agree about
- 20:25Speaker 2: Josh Allen. He's asked to put on his cape all
- 20:27Speaker 2: the time. Now, he does have Cook in the backfield.
- 20:29Speaker 2: He's got a really, really good offensive line. And a
- 20:32Speaker 2: defense that hopefully will be better, especially against a run
- 20:36Speaker 2: than they were last year. They got Ed Oliver back.
- 20:38Speaker 2: That should help. But I'm with you. He is a
- 20:41Speaker 2: great quarterback.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Mike, with the Rams losing and then losing Miles Garrett
- 20:47Speaker 4: to IR, their Super Bowl odds have dipped to plus 600.
- 20:52Speaker 4: And to miss the playoffs, they're plus 260. So the
- 20:55Speaker 4: odds would imply they have a better chance to miss
- 20:57Speaker 4: the playoffs than win the Super Bowl. What do you
- 20:59Speaker 4: think about that?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Hmm. Miss the playoffs or win the Super Bowl. I
- 21:05Speaker 2: would still say win the Super Bowl. There's still too
- 21:07Speaker 2: much talent on that team. I don't know how much
- 21:10Speaker 2: time Miles Garrett will miss. Aaron Donald obviously will start
- 21:14Speaker 2: to play soon. They're better than that game, but kudos
- 21:17Speaker 2: to San Francisco for what they did. How much did
- 21:20Speaker 2: travel come into play? I have no idea. But, boy,
- 21:23Speaker 2: the Rams did not look good in San Francisco. Kyle Shanahan,
- 21:28Speaker 2: you had two of the best play callers in the
- 21:30Speaker 2: game matched up. in McVay and Shanahan, and Shanahan certainly
- 21:34Speaker 2: won that matchup.
- 21:35Speaker 3: They would have looked better if the game was in
- 21:36Speaker 3: San Francisco, but it was in Melbourne.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Sure would have.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Mike, what people forget about the Rams is they were
- 21:43Speaker 1: a play away from making it to the Super.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Bowl a year ago without Garrett and without Donald.
- 21:48Speaker 2: That's exactly right. I mean, I would still have no problem.
- 21:52Speaker 2: In fact, I picked the Rams and the Bills to
- 21:54Speaker 2: make the Super Bowl, and I feel good about my
- 21:58Speaker 2: Bills pick. A little shaky on my Rams pick. Not
- 22:00Speaker 2: so much... Not so much because of the one game,
- 22:03Speaker 2: but because Myles Garrett is now going to miss some time.
- 22:06Speaker 2: And even when he comes back, we'll see how well
- 22:09Speaker 2: he does. But to your point, they did it last
- 22:12Speaker 2: year without Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Am I getting carried away if I say Kayla Williams
- 22:16Speaker 1: will be the greatest quarterback we've ever seen?
- 22:19Speaker 2: You're probably getting carried away. Let me tell you what.
- 22:24Speaker 2: We always talk about Patrick Mahomes off-schedule. I don't think
- 22:29Speaker 2: anybody is better than Caleb Williams off schedule. Yeah. I mean, dude,
- 22:33Speaker 2: you have no idea how he escapes.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:36Speaker 2: How well he throws the ball rolling right is absurd.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Across his body.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Absolutely absurd. Yes. And then you have Ben Johnson making
- 22:44Speaker 2: all kind of proclamations. We want to win Super Bowls.
- 22:47Speaker 2: We want to score the most points ever.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I love him.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Well, quite honestly... 59 points. I did the math. They're
- 22:54Speaker 2: on pace to score 1,003 points this year. The record
- 22:58Speaker 2: is 602 by the 2013 Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos. So
- 23:04Speaker 2: they're in a position to smash that record if they
- 23:06Speaker 2: score 59 every game.
- 23:07Speaker 1: So you did 59 times 17, essentially, is what you did, huh?
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:12Speaker 3: On your iPhone.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Well done, Stu. Well done.
- 23:15Speaker 3: No, but you acted like you were writing it down on.
- 23:17Speaker 2: A piece of paper.
- 23:18Speaker 3: No.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Mike, if you won't give us Caleb Williams might be
- 23:22Speaker 4: the greatest quarterback ever, you could at least give us
- 23:24Speaker 4: Ben Johnson might be the greatest coach ever.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Maybe. No. You know what? He's a head coach now,
- 23:34Speaker 2: so he's responsible for the entire team. Let's see what
- 23:38Speaker 2: that defense does. A defense ain't going to let you.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Rarely can you live two years in a row off turnovers.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Their defense rankings last year were not good, but they
- 23:48Speaker 2: led the lead with 33 takeaways. You can't bank on
- 23:51Speaker 2: that two years in a row. They're going to need
- 23:54Speaker 2: to score a lot of points.
- 23:55Speaker 3: I'm with Taylor on this.
- 23:56Speaker 1: 30 years from now, we'll be playing for the Johnson Trophy,
- 23:59Speaker 1: not the Lombardi Trophy.
- 24:00Speaker 3: How about that?
- 24:03Speaker 2: Why do I do this to myself? We love you, bud.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So I am getting carried away if I say Caleb
- 24:11Speaker 1: is the greatest quarterback we've ever seen. Mike, the biggest
- 24:15Speaker 1: compliment I can hand my New York Jets and Mikey's
- 24:17Speaker 1: New York Jets, they look competent.
- 24:21Speaker 3: They looked organized.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I mean, they do have veterans on that team. I mean,
- 24:26Speaker 2: it's not like they just Miami Dolphined it and got
- 24:29Speaker 2: rid of everybody and are younger. I mean, they have
- 24:32Speaker 2: some talent on that team. They just have to figure out,
- 24:34Speaker 2: start by who their quarterback's going to be. You know,
- 24:38Speaker 2: is Geno Smith going to have a really good year
- 24:40Speaker 2: and they're going to think, oh, well, wait, maybe, wait.
- 24:42Speaker 2: But I don't think so. But that's something that needs
- 24:47Speaker 2: to get settled.
- 24:48Speaker 1: The AFC is so much fun. Mike, I hope we
- 24:51Speaker 1: see this play out. All four of these quarterbacks just
- 24:54Speaker 1: staying healthy for the entire season. Burrow, Allen, Mahomes, Lamar Jackson.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'd like to see those four kind of go at
- 25:02Speaker 1: it in the playoffs. Three of them need to get
- 25:04Speaker 1: a ring. One of them already has a ton. But
- 25:06Speaker 1: they're just such fascinating, entertaining players, and I want to
- 25:09Speaker 1: see them match up in the playoffs, you know?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, I agree. And who else is going to
- 25:14Speaker 2: jump into the mix? Right. You know, does C.J. Stroud,
- 25:17Speaker 2: you know, jump back into the mix? You know, that's possible.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It's tough to think of any other quarterbacks. Drake May, maybe?
- 25:26Speaker 2: Who's that? Oh, Drake May?
- 25:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Drake May, possibly. And now losing A.J. Brown for a
- 25:31Speaker 2: bit certainly hinders that. But, yeah, I mean, you love
- 25:35Speaker 2: to see in big games great players play. And you
- 25:39Speaker 2: mentioned all the great players. So we'll see.
- 25:42Speaker 3: All right, Mike, we appreciate it.
- 25:43Speaker 1: The goal is 10 to noon Eastern every day on
- 25:46Speaker 1: ESPN Radio.
- 25:47Speaker 3: He's got Notre Dame football. We're waiting for them to
- 25:49Speaker 3: play someone good. Oh, ho, ho.
- 25:51Speaker 2: What? Wait a minute.
- 25:53Speaker 3: What happened there?
- 25:54Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Well, who have you played?
- 25:55Speaker 2: I mean. Well, listen, they don't play any FCS teams.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:59Speaker 2: So. When you're playing any Texas States or UTSAs of
- 26:04Speaker 2: the world.
- 26:05Speaker 3: What's the first game you're concerned about on the schedule here?
- 26:08Speaker 2: It's not this weekend. I mean, I think they have,
- 26:11Speaker 2: if you look at it realistically, three tough ones, SMU, Miami,
- 26:14Speaker 2: and BYU, whatever order they play in. Carolina? Those are.
- 26:18Speaker 2: What's that?
- 26:19Speaker 4: Carolina in Chapel Hill.
- 26:23Speaker 2: And two, I'm just going to forget that. And then
- 26:25Speaker 2: two of the three games I mentioned are at home.
- 26:27Speaker 2: SMU is at Notre Dame. Miami is at Notre Dame. So,
- 26:30Speaker 2: you know, BYU is on the road. Yes. I'm not
- 26:35Speaker 2: going to acknowledge that.
- 26:36Speaker 1: This is a kind man. He's a great person. He's
- 26:38Speaker 1: a good friend. He's a family man. He's not mean
- 26:41Speaker 1: to anyone. But holy shit, have you pissed Mike Golick off, Taylor.
- 26:45Speaker 1: He has dismissed you more than I've ever heard him
- 26:47Speaker 1: dismiss anyone in my entire life. I've known him for
- 26:49Speaker 1: 20 years.
- 26:51Speaker 2: It all started with the Uncle Rico comment of saying
- 26:54Speaker 2: he could have gained 1,000 yards at Carolina if he
- 26:58Speaker 2: were behind Patrick Ricard.
- 26:59Speaker 3: It's nice to see a fullback kind of get all
- 27:02Speaker 3: this praise, you know. It's been a while.
- 27:04Speaker 2: He's a 300-pound fullback. It's unfair. It is unfair to
- 27:10Speaker 2: see him going to the second and third level to
- 27:13Speaker 2: block somebody.
- 27:14Speaker 1: All right, Mike, get out of here. We appreciate it.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Check him out, 10 to noon Eastern, ESPN Radio, Notre
- 27:21Speaker 1: Dame football on Saturday, and NFL football on Sunday. His
- 27:24Speaker 1: wife is the real winner.
- 27:28Speaker 2: That's true. Thanks, guys. Thank you, Mike.
