- 0:32Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 36.
- 0:36I'm joined as always by Owen Smith and Dean Menzies.
- 0:40But this time we record on a Monday evening back to the
- 0:43original slot thanks to Owen moving countries.
- 0:41Music. So I'll bring him in now to tell
- 0:49us where he is. For nationals now, just to try
- 1:03and lock in a little S Yeah, in the sunny Spain.
- 1:06It's nice to like I'm back in Perth.
- 1:09Unreal. How warm actually is it?
- 1:12It's a 20 to 23° currently, which is like just nice for
- 1:17running. Like it's not too warmer.
- 1:19It's perfect. Yeah.
- 1:21Well, looking forward to hearing what you've been up to because
- 1:23you had your late year race last weekend as well, didn't you?
- 1:26So we'll get to that later, yeah.
- 1:29And Dean Menzies, how are you doing on a Monday evening?
- 1:31How's this working for you? Good mate, kids are asleep so
- 1:36yeah, no complaints that's for sure.
- 1:38Quiet House, how I like it. Yeah, happy days.
- 1:41We've got a huge agenda lined up today.
- 1:44We've got Valencia Half Marathon went on, Dublin Marathon went
- 1:47on, Bernie 10 happened in Tasmania and then a few of the
- 1:51results popping up here and there as well.
- 1:54So I guess we'll just dive straight into it.
- 1:58And then I would Owen, do you want to tell us, tell us about
- 2:01your race before we go into some results?
- 2:04Yeah, well, I go through my week train.
- 2:06Yeah. Oh, I just thought your dice.
- 2:09Yeah. Trainer was meddling anyway.
- 2:12Now, because we, yeah, we, we see in the training last week,
- 2:15didn't we? And we just.
- 2:16Yeah, yeah, we just missed something.
- 2:18Yeah. So it was all day autumn open
- 2:22invitation or something like that.
- 2:23It's basically like the first like main cross country race of
- 2:27the year. And I think it's got like a
- 2:28bronze label attached to it so you can get some points or
- 2:31something like that. But yeah, it was 8 Ki want to
- 2:37say 7 1/2 AK. I think it was AK and it was
- 2:40again, course was like undulating.
- 2:44So I just forgot like how a cross country start was like
- 2:49you're literally like 100 abroad, like on the start line
- 2:52and then the gun goes and it's just like a free for all and
- 2:56like it's so fun, but it's just chaotic in that pack at the
- 3:00very, very start. And my goal was to just sit at
- 3:03the back of that lead pack and then you're just like getting
- 3:07pushed, put your hand out, stopping yourself from falling
- 3:10and just waiting for people to drop off.
- 3:12So it was, it was basically 6 laps.
- 3:15So there was 4 big laps and then 21K laps.
- 3:20So yeah, it was AK. And yeah, the first two laps
- 3:23were just chaotic, just in the middle of 2030 odd lads and just
- 3:28waiting from drop off. And they slowly did drop off and
- 3:32I think whittled it down to like 8.
- 3:35And I was just hanging on the back and it was weird under foot
- 3:41because some parts were like grassy, so it was lovely.
- 3:44And then other parts it was like super, super mucky and like so
- 3:47you had to sort of like just guess what?
- 3:50Spikes. So I think I wore 12 mil spikes.
- 3:52Like in the mucky parts you could have wore 15 mil, but then
- 3:55they would have been too long for the grass parts.
- 3:57So you sort of have to just take 1.
- 4:00So I just on 12 mil and umm yeah, held on and on the last
- 4:05lap I was in 6th and the lad in front of me, he slipped going
- 4:11around the corner. Umm he was like 5 minutes ahead
- 4:14of me. So then when he got up I was
- 4:15sort of like just behind him and I said to myself off I don't go
- 4:18now like he's going to sort of like recover.
- 4:21So I sort of went to go by him and I got by him and then like
- 4:25coming down the home straight, I just had like nothing left and
- 4:29like he's like a 13 high 5K guy. So he just zoomed by me.
- 4:33And then this like masters athlete, he's like 42 years old.
- 4:36He flew by me as well. He came from so deep and sort of
- 4:40hopefully yeah, did. Yeah.
- 4:43And so I came like 7th in the end.
- 4:45But it was really, it was a good result.
- 4:46Like I'd say coming into the race I could have been like a
- 4:50like 18th fastest or 20th fastest.
- 4:53So I'm like a top 15 would have been really good.
- 4:55So to come seven and yeah, it's given me a lot of confidence
- 4:58that I'm getting fit. So now I'm going to be out here
- 5:03in Spain for two weeks and then like I'm home, it's going to be
- 5:05two weeks before nationals. So yeah, that's where I'm sort
- 5:09of looking towards now. And cross country itself like
- 5:13fun. Oh so fun.
- 5:16It's way better than track. And how many people like just
- 5:20for context, like how many people were in it, I to start
- 5:25off with, what was that first Sprint?
- 5:26Did I? Share a picture No, I didn't and
- 5:30I'm not sure how many are. Look at the results now.
- 5:34But you talk. It was like 1.
- 5:37Somewhere 50 to 100 sort of, or 100 plus.
- 5:41Yeah, easily. Yeah, because they don't.
- 5:43Masters, senior and under 20 were all together.
- 5:46And oh, sorry, and so this masters athlete he was, he was
- 5:50actually not necessarily in competition with you as well or.
- 5:54Well he was so 3 under under 23 athletes beat me.
- 6:00So I was actually her senior, I think secretary senior, yeah.
- 6:05And there's few young lads actually won.
- 6:06The lad who won it is like A1325K guy.
- 6:09He's really, really good and. Yeah.
- 6:12So, but no, yeah, I'd say 100 odd people in the race.
- 6:16And so yeah, it was chaotic at the start, but I haven't ran a
- 6:19race like that in ages. So yeah, it was good feedback.
- 6:21Do you have you? Did you wear your watch?
- 6:24No, no point cross country. I think it's so irrelevant.
- 6:27Like after the race I was changing my spikes and into my
- 6:31trainers and like this young lad was going through his like heart
- 6:35rate stats and all with his with his like father or something.
- 6:40But like it's so irrelevant because it's undulating.
- 6:46The under foot is so bad. And like I think I average like
- 6:50three O 8 for the big laps and then three O 2 for the for the
- 6:571K laps at the end, the two smaller laps.
- 6:59But you can't say I picked up the pace because it was it was
- 7:05less smoky on them shorter laps and there wasn't a big pull on
- 7:08it. So like paces are so irrelevant.
- 7:12It's really it's really to effort.
- 7:15Yeah, how? I don't understand how you're
- 7:16supposed to draw any conclusion from it from like heart rate or
- 7:20anything. But what you don't in the lead
- 7:23up sounds like the most sensible thing.
- 7:24You'd look at the PBS of the people around you who finished
- 7:28just ahead and just behind maybe, and you determine how
- 7:31well you've done based on that, I guess.
- 7:34Basically, yeah. And just like have your eyes on
- 7:37some people and you should in theory be around them.
- 7:41And there's, some people are stronger across country, some
- 7:43people are weaker across country, but you have a fair
- 7:45idea of where you should be. So, umm, yeah, splitting like
- 7:49heart rate data, like even heart rate data in our, like in our
- 7:52competition, like I feel like it's so irrelevant because
- 7:55you're never going to like mimic them conditions and training.
- 7:58Like you're obviously going to be more angsty and, umm, nervous
- 8:02and all during a race. So your heart rate might spike.
- 8:05Umm. But yeah.
- 8:08Anyway, that's just my opinion. But yeah, that was good.
- 8:11And if you're Dean, you'll be caffeined up to your eyeballs
- 8:14anyway, so there's an extra 5 beats on it straight away, yeah.
- 8:17Exactly. I think he had a few things
- 8:20helping him out, but we can talk about them another time.
- 8:25All legal. Oh yeah, nothing until.
- 8:30Oh, well, that's good. Thanks for that.
- 8:31And I was checking Strava keenly to see how you got on.
- 8:35And based on what you said in terms of what your expectation,
- 8:38you kind of outperformed, didn't you really?
- 8:41Yeah, I feel like I've made a jump in fitness recently.
- 8:44And so yeah, basically I just need to keep a lid on things and
- 8:49then don't get carried away and just keep on doing the little
- 8:53recovery things in the evenings and just keeping the body right.
- 8:56Because I'll just be, I'll just do my own downfall basically if
- 9:01I just like push it that a little bit more.
- 9:03It's a training camp. You got to train harder, not
- 9:05smarter. Yes, as a wise man once said,
- 9:10sometimes you do a marathon to see them.
- 9:12Yeah. Well, Speaking of, have you,
- 9:14have you been following some of that content recently?
- 9:19No, he's crazy. Like he's actually lost him.
- 9:24Like a marathon in like 217 in the midst of a 250K week and
- 9:30like, I don't know, there's just some outrageous stuff in there.
- 9:34And then he's doing more like some of that sort of VO2 work as
- 9:37well. Have you noticed like some
- 9:39faster 4 hundreds in amongst some massive days?
- 9:44It's yeah, it's good. It's good viewing.
- 9:48Phenomenal. What what he's able to withstand
- 9:50or his body's able to withstand it's.
- 9:53Crazy. It's crazy how his buddy can
- 9:55hold up after all that. Like he just makes a tube.
- 9:58Like he trained. Like you're done a training
- 10:00session and run a 217 marathon. Yeah, this is rented Japan for
- 10:04anyone that's not aware. But like, and when he's he
- 10:09writes like a a good amount of a caption for a lot of it.
- 10:13And often it's referred to as legs heavy and stuff like that.
- 10:16And you're like, I can't imagine what like if he I know the
- 10:20feeling of like legs being heavy and tired.
- 10:23Like what must those legs feel like?
- 10:28Yeah, like Jet like actual like is there any like ability to
- 10:33contract left? Like it would just be.
- 10:36And then because he's doing these like 5K efforts and like
- 10:39like for like for shorter fast races and like asking his body
- 10:43for a lot and like sometimes it's not sort of sticking and
- 10:46you're like, I'm not, you know, once it got left, it's, it's it
- 10:52just cops a beating. But hey, he backs it up.
- 10:55It's very impressive. It was the one.
- 10:57Was it like only last week where he'd done that half marathon?
- 10:59It didn't go amazingly. And then he's doing 6 by AK that
- 11:03evening. Yeah.
- 11:04And then, yeah. And then like I watched one of
- 11:07the the videos with the the 5K race, wasn't there a 10K race
- 11:11into a 5K race sort of just backing them up?
- 11:14And yeah, it's very impressive. It's a good job Brooks have
- 11:18given him free reins in terms of coaching and stuff, doing what
- 11:22he wants to do. Because could you imagine if
- 11:24they'd tried to assign a coach to him?
- 11:27He probably wouldn't assigned. Hey, yeah, but then you could.
- 11:32You could do look at it the other way if you had a coach and
- 11:35like he had like crazy, well, he is very structured, unlike he
- 11:38knows what he's doing, like he is performing unbelievable.
- 11:41But if he actually had a coach and he pulled that back a little
- 11:43bit, like would he be fresher? Could he be faster?
- 11:46Like you never know. You've looked at two different
- 11:48ways. I definitely think you'd be
- 11:50fresher, but umm yeah. Phenomenal was such a good
- 11:56follow. Umm, I can't remember where I
- 11:59heard it sidetracking here, but about Brooks's new training shoe
- 12:04being very good. I don't think it was Jake
- 12:07mentioning. I think it was like another
- 12:09channel that I thought I heard it on, but apparently it's like
- 12:12a very, very good shoe. Was Chris, so I think saying it,
- 12:17is it like the daily trainer one, like the easy run type
- 12:21shoe? Yeah, so it's got me in piqued
- 12:24my interest in Brooks shoes again because I've, I've not
- 12:27been on them for a while. Used to wear them as a kid all
- 12:29the time. What's it called?
- 12:31Does she? I don't know actually, to be
- 12:33fair, Hyperion. Or something, I don't know.
- 12:37No, it was, it was something, a version of the ghost, like the
- 12:40ghost something. Oh, of course, I'm sure Ghost
- 12:45Max. Yeah, potentially anyway.
- 12:49Anyway, Indeed, I should mention as well, the Joe Wigfield
- 12:54interview came out some point during last week, so apologies
- 12:57for anyone who struggles to understand me, because you would
- 13:00have just had 90 minutes struggling to understand either
- 13:03of us, and probably also trying to decipher who was Speaker A
- 13:06and who was Speaker B Yeah, when we're talking about times like
- 13:1428 minutes for 10K and 62 minutes for 1/2 marathon, that's
- 13:18definitely not me. Yet.
- 13:23No, but I really enjoyed that chat, like speaking to him about
- 13:27his progression as a junior and then also kind of like the stuff
- 13:31with Hoka was interesting. Like he signed and kind of
- 13:35didn't join that team Macau, but he'd done a little bit erased.
- 13:40He was on the start line when they were on the start line a
- 13:42couple of times, but he's still doing his own training on the
- 13:44side. So, I mean, he didn't say
- 13:47explicitly, but you wonder whether there was like some
- 13:50politics involved regarding him not resigning with them.
- 13:54And then when he talked about when we're talking about YouTube
- 13:58and he said he doesn't do it and because he hasn't got the time
- 14:02or the funding. And obviously we speak about
- 14:04YouTube Diaries a lot and we appreciate the content that
- 14:07people are putting out. But that's kind of an aspect
- 14:10which I guess we overlook like only the very fortunate athletes
- 14:14are able to. Well, besides Jake, who does it
- 14:17all himself to have this content produced for them because I
- 14:21imagine it's costly from a monetary point of view and also
- 14:24like the time and effort that goes into it.
- 14:26And you do think that these athletes who do have the
- 14:29channels now, it gives them a bit of a leg up, doesn't it, in
- 14:31terms of like exposure with the brands and endorsements?
- 14:35And so it's kind of like he's not him in particular, but
- 14:40athletes who are like on the cusp.
- 14:42They're probably not getting a deal from a brand, so they're
- 14:45not getting salary that way. And they can't.
- 14:48It's like, hard to make that jump, isn't it?
- 14:50Yeah, but like. If.
- 14:52You find it hard to believe that like is it is such a good
- 14:56athlete how Brand hasn't picked him up and how Hocus would have
- 14:59messed them about a bit. Like if he can't get a Brand,
- 15:03like what hope does it give anyone?
- 15:04Like he's yeah, I don't know. It's not fair.
- 15:07He's, I didn't realise, like I hadn't connected the dots, but I
- 15:13just remember him popping up on my Instagram feed when he broke
- 15:16the tape at Manchester Half and just thinking I had to watch it
- 15:21a couple of times because I'm like, did this guy actually win
- 15:23the win the race? Or was it because you normally
- 15:25don't associate someone with that?
- 15:27Sort of because he has like what feels like it looks like a more
- 15:31traditional 1500 meter build. But yeah, he's running and
- 15:35breaking the tape ahead of these like sort of fairly lean looking
- 15:39distance guys. He's sort of running away from
- 15:42them at the back end of a marathon.
- 15:43I remember like watching some of those reels and it's, I don't
- 15:46know, it's very cool to see someone like looking so strong
- 15:49and compact running that quickly over an endurance race.
- 15:53So maybe off the back of that, a brand would notice that this
- 15:57guy's maybe got quite a bit of potential depending on where he
- 16:01wants to go with it. Or be it that he seems pretty
- 16:05set on focusing on the shorter stuff, because it sounds like
- 16:07that's what he likes to do the most.
- 16:09On the reel, it looks like he's proper shutting it down as well,
- 16:12coming over the line, doesn't it?
- 16:14He's like, it makes you wonder looking at these Valencia
- 16:16results, like you can't automatically say he would have
- 16:20run faster, but there would have been the opportunity to pet
- 16:23potentially go a little bit faster.
- 16:26So it would have been cool for him to be in that field against
- 16:30some of these other probe rats who we'll talk about later on as
- 16:33we get to the results. But yeah, worth a listen and
- 16:38keen for anyone's feedback, whether that just be some
- 16:41translations or what you picked up from the chat.
- 16:45Also, something before we go into the results, something I've
- 16:48seen on Twitter and I was like, is this just click base because
- 16:51I've seen it and I was just rattled.
- 16:52Like it was a question from like I think it was a running
- 16:55influence that I with the blue tech on Twitter X and he posed
- 17:01is the 100 mile world record, which is 10 hours and 51
- 17:06minutes. I think it was.
- 17:08So I had to go away and do the maths for the pace.
- 17:11It works out as 4 minutes and three seconds per kilometer for
- 17:16100 miles or 161 K. Is that more impressive or
- 17:21Kipchogi's break in two? And I was like, surely it's not
- 17:26a legit question. Clicked into the replies and
- 17:30most people are saying the ultra 100 mile world record is more
- 17:34impressive. That makes sense to me.
- 17:40Not at all. What are you talking about?
- 17:42No, it's like that. That doesn't make a lot of
- 17:44sense. Like I think with a lot of the
- 17:47like longer distances, like they're sort of not.
- 17:54It's like a new when you invent a new sport, it's not yet solved
- 17:57and therefore the opportunity to improve it is greater.
- 18:01Whereas once something's been done and done and done for such
- 18:03a long time and you've had such high quality athletes doing it
- 18:06for a long period of time, it's very hard to take it forward.
- 18:09And so for these guys that were able to take it down to two
- 18:12minutes, yet people have been trying to run this race for such
- 18:15a long period of time, that goes to show that it's pretty
- 18:17exceptional. Like how many fast 100 mile
- 18:21races even are there and how many really high quality
- 18:24athletes are doing them? Wouldn't think many like, yeah,
- 18:28so whoever just ran the 100K record it in what, whatever it
- 18:31was, 3 1/2 minute K pace. But that same athlete, I suspect
- 18:36if they applied themselves to the 160 K distance, would
- 18:40probably beat it as well. Well, they took 5 minutes off
- 18:44the 100K record the other week. They'd probably be able to do
- 18:48similar if not more on that in my view, Yeah.
- 18:53Yeah, and you imagine the the people who are doing who,
- 18:55whoever this 100 mile world record holder is, he would have
- 18:59run a marathon earlier on in his career, probably reached his
- 19:04ceiling, hence why he's moved up the distances.
- 19:06But he would have run and now you'd imagine somewhere 2:20 to
- 19:102:30. So that's just 1,000,000 miles
- 19:14apart from what Kipchogi done and the pro marathon runners
- 19:20never run these ultra crazy distances.
- 19:22But you imagine if Kipchoge or someone of the like who is able
- 19:27to hold sub three minute KS for 42 applied themselves running 4
- 19:34minutes. AK would be they could probably
- 19:36do it for 36 hours straight. Whilst we're on the topic, and I
- 19:40know it didn't quite make it the final cut of the agenda, but I
- 19:45was hoping to to make a mention of something that I did follow
- 19:49during the week, which was the Backyard Ultra Individual World
- 19:55Championships. So for those that aren't
- 19:57familiar with it and it's not something we traditionally
- 20:00cover, but it's at the start of every.
- 20:03So the race starts and you have an hour to complete a 6.7
- 20:07kilometre loop, and then on the strike of the next hour you if
- 20:11you're not in the corral, you're a DNF.
- 20:15But those that line up then have the next hour to complete the
- 20:18same loop and it goes on and on and on until there's one person
- 20:22left. And Australia does quite well
- 20:27into like internationally and in particular there's a Perth based
- 20:31runner who we know at least Ryan and I called Phil Gore and he
- 20:36won it. And he's quite, I think he holds
- 20:38the, well, he does hold the the world record for the most number
- 20:41of laps, which I think is 119 or they call them yards.
- 20:47But yeah, 119 * 6.7 is a lot. So this basically went on for.
- 20:52So this World Championships, it's the, the host of it or the
- 20:57inventor of it, should I say, hosted the World Championships
- 21:00in the US and it went for almost 5 days.
- 21:04And I sort of liken it, you know, Test match cricket.
- 21:08I don't know if you ever, you know how like the, it's never
- 21:12decided, you know, OO often it's not decided over a, an over or a
- 21:16ball or even an innings. It's sort of, you know, it spans
- 21:195 days and it sort of ebbs and flows and there's this backyard
- 21:22ultra scene. So they live streamed it and
- 21:24they had commentary for 90% of it.
- 21:26And I was quite, yeah, like drawn into it because it's sort
- 21:29of, you know, it's going to have a crescendo at some point.
- 21:32There's going to only be a few left.
- 21:34But I literally had say 60 or 70 of the best men and women that
- 21:38do this and put them in a in a race together and yeah, said
- 21:44see, let's see who the last person standing is.
- 21:46And I'd watch it, I'd tune into it at night, I tune into it
- 21:50during the day. And these people are literally
- 21:52getting up every hour on the hour for five days.
- 21:55And yeah, Perth's field goal won it.
- 21:57And I was, yeah, I was hooked. I really enjoyed it.
- 22:00I must admit I had zero knowledge of this until moving
- 22:03to Perth and then even when I first heard of it I didn't.
- 22:07I didn't think I understand, appreciated the the difficulty
- 22:11of it. And then when you do the maths.
- 22:13So if they're running 6.7 K lap every hour in 124 hour period,
- 22:20that's 160 KS. So they're running for four
- 22:23marathons in a day, and then they're doing that for five days
- 22:26straight with a maximum window of about 20 minutes in every
- 22:33hour to either have something to eat, try and have a nap, or I
- 22:38don't imagine they're prioritizing cleaning.
- 22:41But yes, imagine the mental state that you must be in after
- 22:45five days. That, like the physical part of
- 22:49doing it is one thing, but. Yeah, because I think even if
- 22:52you're up for, I don't know if it's like 18 hours, you start to
- 22:55register almost like being slightly drunk.
- 22:58And so like, I think a lot of the issue that they fall into is
- 23:02not their physical ability, but their mind just goes on them and
- 23:08they start hallucinating and they people get picked up on one
- 23:11of the loops because I've just, yeah, they've just sort of lost
- 23:15their marbles a bit. But I don't know if it was a
- 23:18fascinating race. I don't.
- 23:19Yeah, I don't know. It's a bit of a side discussion,
- 23:23but something that certainly caught my captured my attention
- 23:28over the week on YouTube. So if Phil Gore ended up
- 23:31winning? He did, yeah.
- 23:33So he was the last man, Sandy, a Belgian guy who literally for
- 23:36the last three or four hours was making it on my in 59 minutes
- 23:40and then just getting pushed back out there, grabbing some
- 23:42food, pushed back out there. I think the American guy who is
- 23:48the reigning world champion, Harvey Lewis I think is his
- 23:51name. He finished third.
- 23:53But he turns out he posted I think maybe today or yesterday
- 23:55that he'd broken a couple of ribs because they they do a day
- 23:58loop, which is through trails and it's quite there's a bit of
- 24:02up and down like ascending and descending to do, But then
- 24:06that's two treacherous at night. So they do a road loop at night,
- 24:09but I think he fell during the day and cracked a couple of
- 24:11ribs. So that sort of put him out of
- 24:14it. But Phil, who looks he's very
- 24:16like textbook and comes in in good time.
- 24:18Like I think physically was really well conditioned, but
- 24:21basically he was getting so tired.
- 24:22Like when he spoke afterwards, he was not very coherent.
- 24:26So even though he presented like he had it all together, I think
- 24:28he's mind was really playing tricks on him.
- 24:31So I think he was just about gassed as well.
- 24:34But he had a good poker face, which was enough to get it done.
- 24:37Fair enough. Well done.
- 24:39I wouldn't say nothing, so I'm going to take that as if you, if
- 24:42you've got nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
- 24:45Oh, fair fight on. I couldn't imagine running for
- 24:48like, was it 4 to 5 days? Yeah.
- 24:52Like off an hour like it was. Yeah, no, I need my sleep.
- 24:55I'm precious. You and me both, I couldn't like
- 24:59I wouldn't do well at day tops. You know, you know that even if
- 25:02you did like the competitiveness buried deep down inside you, you
- 25:06would try and take it seriously as well.
- 25:08And then you just end up torturing yourself and also
- 25:12probably perform. And shockingly, compared to some
- 25:14of these people who can't even run probably within like 3
- 25:19minutes of you over a 5K or something, we have one result
- 25:23from last week which we missed due to the early record.
- 25:25So this guy has been on our watch list and he's featured
- 25:28recently on YouTube Diaries. So the the Amsterdam Marathon
- 25:31happened and Phil Sussman ran there.
- 25:33So if you've been following his YouTube, he's explained that
- 25:37he's doing Valencia Marathon in December and on the way he was
- 25:41set to race Amsterdam last week and he was looking to take a
- 25:44small PB there and then build into Valencia on the back of
- 25:47that. And he's actually this was PB
- 25:50going in was 2O8O4 and he's end up running two O 718.
- 25:55So he's he's run a comfortable PB and look at his splits and
- 26:00they're almost like metronomic. There was no kind of like blow
- 26:04up. If anything, he was probably
- 26:05closing a little bit harder than what he went out in.
- 26:09So bodes very well for him for Valencia, although I'm scared
- 26:13he's going to like overcook it now because clearly all the
- 26:17ingredients are there and his his pies bacon nicely already.
- 26:21I don't want him to just go and whack the temperature up on the
- 26:23oven and end up with a crusty pie.
- 26:26But we'll see because he's he's run 220K this week on the week
- 26:31after it. And I think he mentioned in his
- 26:34in his video, he's like, so now I'm going to double down like
- 26:38more more longer, harder sessions, longer long runs.
- 26:43And is I think he wanted to run 2O6 originally and Valencia is
- 26:49now thinking could that start with A5?
- 26:53So and now keep a lid on it, Phil.
- 26:58Watch is made of Joshua chapter guy the team kill ever like now,
- 27:02like 2O four is still a very good marathon.
- 27:05But for like the large who ran like the world record for like
- 27:10the five K 10K like you'd presume you could pull a
- 27:13marathon like a really really fast marathon together.
- 27:16But do you think like that's just his limit?
- 27:18Yeah, I don't I some of the track guys aren't, don't seem
- 27:23that like super efficient, you know, like even like Mo Farah,
- 27:26you know, like you just look at them and they look so bouncy and
- 27:30elastic and can kick down and they look so good on the track
- 27:33and then they get to the road and they just don't look so
- 27:37super efficient. I don't think like whereas like
- 27:39say, like say Kip Limo, he does look really good on the road and
- 27:43like he he looks so compact and smooth and then he try he goes
- 27:47to the road looks good. Even like peculiar like when
- 27:51those guys get rid, like those little Ethiopians often look
- 27:53good when they get onto the road, whereas some of the like
- 27:56bouncier guys don't seem to look that good.
- 27:58So I don't know unless, unless there's a suggestion that he's
- 28:02just not, it's something else. But my my thought is
- 28:05mechanically, maybe that's what's limiting him.
- 28:08It's the the short stride and the high cadence, isn't it?
- 28:11That seems to be what lends itself to the top marathoners.
- 28:14I think so. But yeah, I think that's a third
- 28:16crack at it. Maybe it is improving slightly
- 28:19with each one. But obviously as you say with
- 28:21this the ceiling and there's five and 10K, you would expect
- 28:25maybe by now he'd be a little bit lower than 204 high do.
- 28:29You think he's just washed? No, I just think he hasn't like
- 28:35I know like on the day so much can happen.
- 28:37He just hasn't had like a good day.
- 28:40And no saying this will probably come out next time around like
- 28:43201 or something or two hours flat.
- 28:46And but yeah, I just it's weird way he's such a good track
- 28:50athlete and he just can't string it together on the roads.
- 28:52What has he run for half, do you know?
- 28:56I don't think in the 50 sevens, could be wrong, I'll check.
- 28:59He's set his stall out now though, hasn't he?
- 29:01So he it's not as if he can probably go back and stop, run
- 29:05the five and the 10K on the track.
- 29:06Still, he's committed to the marathon.
- 29:09So we'll we'll find out in the next couple of years because I'm
- 29:12sure he'll have three or four more cracks in.
- 29:14It 5949. He ran in 2024.
- 29:19So that doesn't even that's miles off it as well, isn't it?
- 29:21If you think of Kajal Chef running 5730 like he's a track 5
- 29:26and 10K runner. So to be two minutes off the
- 29:30half conversion even is like a big gap straightaway, isn't it?
- 29:35She's trying to convert something that's not really
- 29:37there, even over the half. And then 2023 he ran a 62 in New
- 29:42York that in 2024 that M5946 half was in Delhi, New Delhi and
- 29:49India. So I don't know if that's
- 29:51renowned for being fast or anything.
- 29:57So. No.
- 29:58So yeah, he actually hasn't really strong like exceptional
- 30:03now, even though like 59 is pretty exceptional but like for
- 30:06him. A minute off the European
- 30:07record. And start throwing shades.
- 30:09It was shade. Those Europeans, we're about to
- 30:11celebrate them so that I guess that takes us to Valencia then
- 30:16before I go through the results, I wanted to ask, did you see
- 30:20some of the shakeout runs that I think it was its runners nerd on
- 30:24Instagram maybe was posting they got access to join.
- 30:28I think it was Kajalcha and Omgren.
- 30:30And did you see the paces that they're doing their easy
- 30:33shakeout at? Yeah.
- 30:35Outrageous. I think Kajal Chew was 348 for
- 30:39maybe it was even a 10K run as well, or at least 8K and Om Grim
- 30:44was like 336 or 34 for 6K. And the guy, the Instagram
- 30:52account has videoed it as well and it I kind of testify that
- 30:56it's definitely easy. Like they're absolutely just
- 30:58breezing along, aren't they? But it just shows.
- 31:03Looking at looking at Alan grin in the half like running like
- 31:06240 highs per kilometer like he just looks so smooth like he can
- 31:11hold it forever and so sort of makes sense that he can jog 336.
- 31:18And what was he didn't he did he post during the week or was it
- 31:23last week him doing those 20 by 400 off?
- 31:27Was it 3030 seconds in 62 point something seconds and his
- 31:33lactate levels were by under? Finished the workout and it was
- 31:36like 3.5 or something So just silly silly fast.
- 31:43And he even when he does the test, he, he looks at it and
- 31:46goes like a funny face, doesn't he?
- 31:48As if like what the? Fuck, it's good, yeah.
- 31:51Did you see the the clip of an aged very well?
- 31:56An interviewer asked what will it take for a European to go
- 32:01under 59 minutes for the half marathon and he said three days.
- 32:07Wow. Yeah, and he was right.
- 32:12What a response that is, by the way.
- 32:13Yeah, that's cool. That's well, let's do the
- 32:16results then because we'll chat about more, no doubt.
- 32:18So in the men's race, Yarmouth Kajal chaired the Ethiopian
- 32:22warned in 58 minutes and two seconds, followed by I don't
- 32:27know these two, to be fair, Rodrigue quiz era in 5838 and
- 32:33then Brian Keyboard from Kenya in 5839.
- 32:37So Kajal sure won comfortably there by over 30 seconds in the
- 32:42women's race going on. Did you, did you see Kajal?
- 32:46Did you actually? I watched the first like 15
- 32:48minutes and then I went for my run, for my long run.
- 32:51But he'd like dropped to pacemakers after like 14 minutes
- 32:55takes. He's crazy.
- 32:58Like like his country, woman the.
- 33:03Cigar. Cigar just, you know, brings in
- 33:06the pacemakers and then just burns past him.
- 33:08When I was when I was watching it, you think like Valencia half
- 33:12marathon, it's now renowned as being like one of the fastest
- 33:16half marathons in the world and attracts all these like insane
- 33:19top athletes. And then you look at him like
- 33:22miles off the front after 10 minutes.
- 33:25It's like the the gap between him and everyone else and the
- 33:30caliber of everyone else. It's just scary still.
- 33:34And you've seen him do this before on the track, though,
- 33:36haven't you? Like if he he chases a record,
- 33:39they'll go and do it by himself. And then comes a little bit
- 33:42unstuck towards the end. Yeah, you do wonder in a major
- 33:46championship if maybe like, would he not be better served
- 33:51just to to, to send it from the start and just, you know, you
- 33:56know, people will sit in and and he's giving up a bit of an
- 33:59advantage for them to do that, but maybe it'd be worth it.
- 34:02Yeah. So I think he's won this race
- 34:04the past two years in 57, in 5731.
- 34:08So he was going for his 5730 course record time and he was on
- 34:15pace for I think at least 10K through 10K.
- 34:17He was maybe 7 seconds under, I think it was 2730 and I think
- 34:23was his 10K splits, which is obscene in itself.
- 34:27And then as you say, he's he's out there by himself doing it.
- 34:30So kind of as the race progressed, he slowly slipped
- 34:34away. But as you can see from the
- 34:36margin to second, he obviously was very aware that he had a
- 34:39comfortable gap there and probably just started to manage
- 34:42his effort a little bit as to not end up completely blowing
- 34:45and not winning the race. Because I mean, you don't know
- 34:48what goes into like the contracts and the appearances
- 34:50and all that sort of stuff, but you imagine there's a shit ton
- 34:53of pressure for these guys to go out and chase course records, if
- 34:57not world records, as you've seen with the the women's
- 35:01winner. So she Agnes neglected.
- 35:03She won in 60 three O 8, which her PB was 4 seconds quicker
- 35:08than that. And the world record was 6252,
- 35:13so only 16 seconds quicker than that.
- 35:16So clearly that race had been set up for her and anyone else
- 35:20who fancied it to go and chase the world record and it wasn't
- 35:24quite to be for them. The woman who finished second
- 35:27was in Ethiopian 40 N Sefi in 6510.
- 35:32So Agnes has won by 2 / 2 minutes.
- 35:35They're absolutely destroyed them.
- 35:37And in third was Veronic Lilayo in 6546, all the results of
- 35:43relevancy then. So as we just mentioned there,
- 35:46Andres Holmgren actually ran the European record and that had
- 35:49been standing since 2019, which is obviously still recent
- 35:54history. But regarding some of these
- 35:56records now, the way the fall and week on week, probably one
- 35:59of the oldest on the on the charts, huge season from green
- 36:05medals in the 10. Was it the 1010 thousand, wasn't
- 36:10it? He got bronze and then yeah, he
- 36:12was going for it in the 5000. But the heat, whatever got to
- 36:16him. And then fair play to him.
- 36:18He's obviously doubled down on the train and stayed in the game
- 36:23and came away with the European record and a half marathon here.
- 36:26Think I was looking at it as well.
- 36:27So he now obviously is the national record holder.
- 36:30He was already and he's now the national record holder by over 2
- 36:351/2 minutes, the second past the Swede.
- 36:39Who's second? I can't remember the name but it
- 36:41was like 61 minutes something. So potentially we wouldn't know
- 36:44them because they're Swedish as well.
- 36:46The existing European record holder was Swiss guy Julian
- 36:52Wonders. So the time was 5930 and I think
- 36:57and bizarrely the the race in which that record was run was a
- 37:01UAE half marathon. And whenever I see them on like
- 37:04World Athletics and stuff, I never consider that to be an
- 37:08insanely fast race. I don't know if I'm just wrong
- 37:10there but I always attach heat to it because the UAE but
- 37:14clearly can get a good one. He was, He spent time living and
- 37:20training in Kenya back in the day.
- 37:23I just remember content or him sort of spending time there and
- 37:28then coming and racing well. Did he ever convert to a good
- 37:32marathon? Not like or not not that I
- 37:35recall like I remember like I think he, I think he had a few
- 37:39cracks at it, but I think he's half stood out more than that.
- 37:41I don't remember him running like 205 or anything. 206 or
- 37:45anything could be I could be wrong.
- 37:46One of the crazy observations you make from this is obviously
- 37:50Omron's the first European to break 59 there, but how many
- 37:56Africans would have broken 59? There's probably a fair few and
- 38:00it wouldn't really be that much of a big deal if an African
- 38:04fella goes out and runs 58 high, 58 mid, whatever.
- 38:09But then when it actually comes down to the races where the
- 38:12medals are up for grabs, the Europeans are able to compete
- 38:15against them in that sense, but they just can't quite time trial
- 38:19like them yet. There was a hell of a lot of
- 38:21Brits further down the field as well as well.
- 38:25The first home was actually the Irish guy Ephraim G Day.
- 38:30So he beat Alfie Mann, Thor, he beat Charles Wheeler, he beat
- 38:34Alex Yee, he beat Ben Connor and then from an Australian point of
- 38:38view, James Whelan and Isaac Hayne.
- 38:40So yeah, good day. Around 6102.
- 38:43Yeah, I don't know if he he probably would have been looking
- 38:45to get under 61 seeing that amount.
- 38:50Fertile curtain got under 61 in Copenhagen, but still like
- 38:55running 61 for for 1/2 is it's getting up there and like like
- 39:02he came 13, which you can't really complain with that.
- 39:07Like the people who bet them are all crazy crazy, but that late.
- 39:10So yeah, fair play. Yeah, especially to be beating
- 39:14all those other Brits as well. No doubt.
- 39:16There's like a competition within the competition there, if
- 39:20you like. And Alfie Mann Thorpe has come
- 39:22out on top of the Brits alone, which is potentially a bit of a
- 39:26surprise as well because I don't know if people know who he is.
- 39:30He's the guy who I think he's sold track star now or he's
- 39:33stepped away from it at least. But if anyone's familiar with
- 39:36that page on Instagram, which I'm sure a lot of you will be,
- 39:39he was the the man behind that for a while.
- 39:42And now he's running 6126. So he's going pretty well in his
- 39:46pursuit of the professional athlete lifestyle.
- 39:50Did you see he was like, not bad for like a content creator or
- 39:55something like that because he posts a lot on on social media.
- 40:00I don't know why, but I mean, I feel like they're like
- 40:03professional athletes are like, oh, you shouldn't do that or
- 40:07like, you don't need to do that. Like it's source of income fraud
- 40:10because he doesn't have a brand behind him.
- 40:11I think he does have that 24/7, but he doesn't have like a shoe
- 40:14brand. So yeah, I know.
- 40:15I like what he's doing. And like, again, 6126 is just
- 40:20ridiculously fast. 255 per kilometer.
- 40:24Yeah. Not fair play, Alfie.
- 40:25Yeah, I've, I've noticed that 24/7 represent thing.
- 40:29I reckon he's probably getting a decent wage out of that because
- 40:32the guy who earns that, that George Heaton isn't it.
- 40:34He's absolutely loaded. And I think Alfie does like some
- 40:38sort of coaching integration with them now.
- 40:41And they've got, I don't know how official it is, but there's
- 40:44some sort of pure involvement from some point of view as well.
- 40:48Yeah, and he warned them fast or threes.
- 40:51I'd love to get my hands on a pair of them for there's 10K in
- 40:54Valencia. If I'm still fit then I'd love
- 40:57to race and then they look fast. You'll have to get Joe's contact
- 41:01at PMM. Reach out for some some race
- 41:04kit. I think there's a big difference
- 41:06between me and Joe. Now to be fair, they might give
- 41:10me one pair or the laces off them.
- 41:12A pair with 200K in. Yeah.
- 41:15Alex Yi there back in 196129. I think he, I haven't seen
- 41:20directly the quotes, but I think he was maybe somewhat
- 41:23disappointed with that. I was hoping to go a little bit
- 41:26quicker and no doubt Isaac Hayne, the Australian will be a
- 41:31little bit disappointed with that as well because he already
- 41:33has a PB of like over a minute quicker than that.
- 41:37But I think, I'm not too familiar with James slash Jimmy
- 41:41Whelan, but it seems like that result is kind of come out the
- 41:45blue. I think he used, he was a former
- 41:47professional cyclist. He's not long turned to running
- 41:50and he's able to do that, which is makes you feel sick really.
- 41:57What's going to be you boys when you come back just banging out
- 41:59of 60? One, I'm the flip side when you
- 42:02when you see me in the Tour in five years.
- 42:05Oh, he was a former runner, around 67.
- 42:07Half. I tell you.
- 42:09Oh, and he was. He certainly had thoughts like
- 42:12that when we were heading through Shelley on on Saturday.
- 42:16There's there's a few Sprint intervals on the on the loop and
- 42:23I got the heads up for that Mount St. 1 Mounts Bay Rd. one
- 42:26last week. So I took off early and I think
- 42:30I don't know if it inspired Ryan or not.
- 42:31We haven't really spoken about it, but he did similar this
- 42:34week. So we, you meant it like you're
- 42:36sort of rolling turns and then it crescendos with a Sprint
- 42:38finish at the it's where you you'd be familiar as the
- 42:42previous record holder of the Shelley 10K run.
- 42:46But before you go, that's all I've got now.
- 42:52But but when you go out for that Shelley 10K before you do that
- 42:57U-turn before you go under the bridge there.
- 43:00That's sort of where the Sprint finishes for this and where
- 43:04we're probably about two KS out and Ryan's, like I think you
- 43:08said, Ryan, you weren't sure where it finishes, but you just
- 43:11sort of bugger. I'll just roll the dice.
- 43:13And so Alfie hops just straight off the front of the group.
- 43:16And I knew what he was doing and we weren't catching him quick
- 43:19enough. So then then I'm like, I don't
- 43:21want him to get away with this. So then I've hopped onto the
- 43:24front and dragged everyone up to catch him.
- 43:26And then as a result, that then sprinted off me to to to get the
- 43:31win. But we both sort of just ruined
- 43:35our own chances messing about with each other there.
- 43:38But bit of fun. Yeah, probably equivalent to in
- 43:43a 5K race, dropping your finishing kick with a kilometer
- 43:48or a mile to go. Yeah, but the killer thing with
- 43:51cycling this is we're learning the hard way.
- 43:53But like, so you can actually be 20% worse than someone and, and
- 43:59beat them because you just sit behind them the whole way.
- 44:02And then all you need is this slight differential to then go
- 44:05round them and then beat them at the end.
- 44:08And so it really means that whereas in running, if you're
- 44:11feeling good, you can just go around someone and drop them and
- 44:14you win. And so it feels quite nice.
- 44:16Whereas in cycling, they just reattach to your wheel and then
- 44:18you just spend all your bickies and then you're just in trouble.
- 44:22And so I think, I think Ryan probably felt that because there
- 44:25was a whole group just mowing him down as he's just, you're
- 44:28just punching into the headwind by himself.
- 44:31Yeah, it's good fun. Absolutely blew my quads up as
- 44:35well. This time I felt lactic acid
- 44:38over six months. And then he's like, I've got to
- 44:41go for a for a lake. And so he's popped, he's popped
- 44:45off. And then we do about 3 or 4
- 44:47different roundabouts and go down all these side roads and
- 44:50I'm like, all right, don't reckon I'll see him again, but
- 44:53he made it. As as I was stood there having a
- 44:56having a way just after that my legs were like genuinely
- 45:00trembling like this just pump the black and then the whilst
- 45:08was Speaking of it the last little Sprint, Dean copped A
- 45:12mouthful from one of the fellas for sitting on his wheel the
- 45:16whole time and then going round him at the end.
- 45:19Which I thought I'd literally. Yeah.
- 45:24I, I've never done that in running, why would I do that in
- 45:26cycling? But yeah, I got the chocolate,
- 45:31so whatever, I'll I'll wear the spray.
- 45:35It was funny though, as we're then riding off up the hill,
- 45:38like just chilling. There's like a bit of back and
- 45:41forth going on about like sitting on someone's wheel and
- 45:45like, what was it? What was the the point it was
- 45:48making? Like I'll what come and do some
- 45:49of the work or something. But you know what it's like if,
- 45:53if you don't want to be on the front, don't put yourself on the
- 45:56front like no one else Put them there.
- 45:57You put them themselves. And the issue with these groups,
- 46:00he's like I've taken turns this whole.
- 46:01Music and no. Turns and we're like too large.
- 46:04We can group on the front, but we we don't know.
- 46:08Probably, yeah. I think we we got a coffee with
- 46:13them afterwards. But then it's it's definitely
- 46:15like me and Dean and then the rest of the group.
- 46:19Yeah, I gotcha. I gotcha.
- 46:21But maybe we're we're bringing out some of the competitiveness
- 46:25that they didn't know was still there.
- 46:26So hopefully there's some benefits somewhere.
- 46:30That's good to shake things up. Yeah, I think we've temporarily
- 46:34lost Dean, but I'm sure he'll be back.
- 46:36Maybe he's he's rage switched his Wi-Fi off.
- 46:42The juice is flowing. I reckon we can go to Dublin
- 46:47Marathon next on the agenda and. Oh just on Valencia Royal
- 46:52Leonard action DNF and he on the social media after he thinks
- 46:56you've got 10K and start against Democrats or something which is
- 47:00it just shows you like that sometimes it's just not your
- 47:03day. Like he would have done
- 47:04everything leading up to it and BIG4 week block and then on the
- 47:08day something's just upset his Tommy and I presume I'd highly
- 47:12doubt he took jails and for for 1/2.
- 47:17So yeah, he'll reload. I think he's going to do that
- 47:21Valencia 10K and in January, so I could get a few scraps on
- 47:26that. Huh?
- 47:27Yeah, you could be going around signing people up for interviews
- 47:31in the elite athlete sense. But yeah, Dublin, so Dublin is
- 47:37not renowned for being a fast course and it was pretty windy,
- 47:40so just take that into account when you're listening to these
- 47:44times. But the winner was Daniel Mesen
- 47:46from the USA, who I've never heard of.
- 47:49He ran 20851. Second was Manzat Sayim from
- 47:53Ethiopia who ran 2/09/09 and 3rd was Samuel Tiscae from Sweden
- 48:00who ran 2/09/29. The first Irish home was fifth
- 48:04David McGlynn, he ran 211 O1 which was a massive PV for him.
- 48:09And second home for the Irish was Ryan Creach who came six in
- 48:12the full race and he ran 21141 so 42 I mean so 41 seconds
- 48:18behind David Mcglenn. And 3rd was Paul O'Donnell who
- 48:20came seventh. He ran 2/12/11, which to have
- 48:25like have 3 Irish guys running like 212, like under 212 is, is
- 48:32pretty good going. Yeah, didn't we Glenn?
- 48:34That was a big breakout race for him and he's friendly with
- 48:37Darren Mclaney and all a group like that I'd be running against
- 48:41and yeah, 211 is. It's crazy.
- 48:44For him, would they have been in a pack for a large majority of
- 48:49that race knowing that they are like the lead Irish guys trying
- 48:53to just win the race? Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:55They were in the lead pack with the with the lads who won it.
- 48:58So it was a big group. And I'd say they just pulled off
- 49:00in the end with Daniel Masten. Yeah.
- 49:02From the USA, the way 51 like put that on a Valencia and
- 49:06you're you're definitely 207 low.
- 49:10You're getting up there. OK.
- 49:12So in the women's a Bessie, a Dona from Ethiopia, one in two
- 49:172628 Ina Garma from Ethiopia came second in two 2632 and 3rd
- 49:24was the sea Basa from Ethiopia again who ran 2/27/12.
- 49:32So the two one and two were just together the hallway and wanted
- 49:37then a best. They just out kicked Tina and
- 49:40but again 226 in Dublin is pretty pretty good going.
- 49:43The first Irish home was she came sixth in the full race.
- 49:48Ava Crean, she's from Limerick. She ran 23412 and this girl,
- 49:54she's 19 years old and which is, yeah, crazy, I think she.
- 50:00Ran. Wasn't that a debut as well?
- 50:03She ran a marathon like a couple of weeks before this in Limerick
- 50:07and around 240 something both Sam like.
- 50:12I'd love to know your boys opinions on like a 19 year old
- 50:15running marathons but I'll just finished off these results And
- 50:18their second Irish she came eighth in the overall.
- 50:21And Ray Mcglenn and she was 23624.
- 50:27And then the third Irish who came ninth in the overall,
- 50:30Nicholas Sheridan from Mead she came, she ran 23956 which was a
- 50:37big PB for her. She was in the two 40s before
- 50:40this and I'd say you guys are going to become very familiar
- 50:43with her. She's moving to Australia now.
- 50:46So she's completed Ireland and now she's just going to go over
- 50:48and complete Australia. I think she's moving to Sydney.
- 50:51So yeah, keep and keep an eye on that name.
- 50:54She'll be coming up in the results.
- 50:55Yeah, that I can't believe that 19 year old has run 234 like
- 50:59that that is just obscene like it can't comprehend it and so
- 51:04referring to that we had the prize money thing in here last
- 51:07week, didn't we? So she's won the the Irish race,
- 51:11so she's got three and a half €1000 for that and then she's
- 51:15finished 6th overall so she's got another €1500 for that out
- 51:21in in U.S. dollars, the prize money.
- 51:24So she's been weighed in fairly nicely there.
- 51:28Yeah and like again, she is 19. What's your guys opinions on
- 51:33like 19 year olds running marathons?
- 51:36Like yeah, like I don't even know any of her PBS.
- 51:39Like I don't know what her fight KPB is, her 10 KPB is, but like
- 51:43she's just jumped straight up to marathon and like yeah, what's
- 51:48your opinion? I think it's.
- 51:49Pretty risky, but yeah, I mean, you want to have spend as much
- 51:56time in the sport, participating in the sport as you can.
- 51:59And there's just you're just introducing more risk.
- 52:02I mean, Ryan and I are both suffering the consequences of
- 52:06running at the minute or living with them.
- 52:08And I would imagine they get exacerbated.
- 52:10And yeah, I know a few of the guys that sort of went to the
- 52:13marathon earlier that didn't have the training load to be
- 52:17able to withstand it. So, I mean, you can do you want
- 52:22to do what's fun and that's obviously, you know, 234 is a is
- 52:27a great run and if she handles it, that's great.
- 52:31But yeah, it just, it just introduces a lot of a lot of
- 52:36risk, right? And and and running is hard and
- 52:38it's pretty destructive on your body and you probably just want
- 52:41to be careful, which perhaps. She is over 5, KPB is 1645 1/2,
- 52:50PB is 74 still. And yeah, I just thought it was
- 52:56crazy at 19 years old. And so like, win a marathon,
- 53:00like, she's like the Irish marathon champion now, which is
- 53:02just crazy thing. That's a very good conversion.
- 53:06You know, 114 * 2 two 28 + 6 two 34.
- 53:11That's, I mean she's obviously very well suited to distance
- 53:15running. Do you think in general women
- 53:17convert better than men? Like the gaps between the
- 53:22shorter distance times are less obvious than men.
- 53:25Yeah. I think, I think men just
- 53:30because they're, you know, have the advantage of testosterone
- 53:34being bigger and stronger, I think naturally can perhaps find
- 53:39a ceiling maybe easier. And so therefore for women that
- 53:44aren't necessarily just naturally as strong, but a very
- 53:47aerobically conditioned, if you're very aerobically
- 53:50conditioned, then you're not, then you're going to convert
- 53:53those distance traces more easily compared to your lack of
- 53:57relative lack of ceiling. So for the same, you know, man
- 54:01that can run 15 minutes to a woman that can run 15 minutes,
- 54:04for the woman woman to be able to do that, she would have to be
- 54:08so she's not, she's not built the same.
- 54:11And so she would have to be so aerobically fit to be able to
- 54:15run that fast. And so then if you then took
- 54:18that so those same two people and put them to a marathon, they
- 54:22would be better suited or already because they would be
- 54:27the, the the woman would be very aerobically fit already.
- 54:30So I think so in that regard, yeah.
- 54:33Yeah, if you took like say 100 of those case study examples,
- 54:38what, what sort of split do you reckon?
- 54:41I reckon that the woman has a better marathon PB where the
- 54:44five KPB is equal in maybe 75 of the 100 examples.
- 54:51That's just my hypothesis on it, but that's how it feels.
- 54:56Yeah, yeah, prob probably, yeah, and, and, and all individual.
- 55:00But I think as you go up and up for a lot of women, they, yeah,
- 55:03improve through aerobic capacity because they're limited
- 55:07physically, I think. So I think that would make
- 55:10sense, yeah. Also, perhaps decision making
- 55:13comes into it and men are just a little bit more idiots in that
- 55:18regard and we'll think perhaps that we're better than we are
- 55:21and therefore we're the architects of our own downfall.
- 55:24Whereas women a little bit more conservative, a little less
- 55:27arrogance, and they'll play it nice and safe and get the
- 55:30results. Which probably leads us to the
- 55:33halfway split for the men's, at least the top three Irish men,
- 55:38because I was getting excited, I was following the live stream
- 55:41and they all split in the 60 fours.
- 55:44I think there are two men in 64 low and maybe one man 64 mid or
- 55:49high. And so you do the conversions on
- 55:51that and that's 208209 pace. And I think the the first
- 55:58Irishman high was, was it 210 high or 211 thereabouts.
- 56:02So yeah, they were obviously a bit more optimistic, umm, with
- 56:13what you know then what they were able to do.
- 56:16Like saying that, so they, them boys had a choice to go with
- 56:20that lead group and probably like beyond the Limits or run
- 56:25solo. So like you sort of toss it up.
- 56:28Like I'd probably rather go on the lead group and then suffer a
- 56:33little bit because like they weren't 1,000,000 miles off her.
- 56:37Umm, yeah, I don't know. You probably reiterating Ryan's
- 56:42point there. No, no, no, no.
- 56:46I just mean I don't, I don't know if that's the right.
- 56:49I don't know. They blew up.
- 56:50What what are they positive split by 3-4 minutes?
- 56:52So one of them DMF D and the other guys positive split by at
- 56:55least three minutes. But yeah, I mean, maybe, maybe
- 56:58that's the right place to do it and the advantages is there, but
- 57:03certainly the harder way to do it, you'd think.
- 57:05Just going back to the the American fella who won that
- 57:07Daniel Mess fund have just been having a look at them here.
- 57:10His his 10K road PB obviously just hasn't run one since it's
- 57:17from 2017 and it's 2946 and then he's just won Dublin marathon on
- 57:23a not perfect day in two O 851. But his no wonder he's like
- 57:31relatively unknown. His results besides that run
- 57:34don't really stand out. So he's got a half marathon PB
- 57:40of 6113, which, OK, that's pretty quick.
- 57:44Like to be fair. But his other runs this year,
- 57:47he'd ran 1/2 in the half marathon champs and ran like 63
- 57:51minutes where the winner was like 60 minutes and he'd run
- 57:56another marathon and ran like 2-11 or two 12211.
- 58:03So yeah, proper out of the blue and bit of an unknown.
- 58:08Who are they letting into these races?
- 58:10Oh. Yeah, that's a good question.
- 58:12No, but I feel like that's why they do Dublin because now
- 58:14they've got like, I think Dublin is on a different tier top.
- 58:17Well, it is on a different tier to like the big ones.
- 58:19But now they can say they've won like a decent marathon, which
- 58:22gets them down entry into those big races.
- 58:24So take a stepping stone marathon.
- 58:26And so, yeah, no, that's why they do it.
- 58:29I think I'm reading this right. But remember we do we speak
- 58:32about this as well last week about like Irish time bonuses
- 58:38for the men. So I think it says sub 212 they
- 58:41get 5000. Is it U.S. dollars?
- 58:45So that three guys would have would have all all got that,
- 58:49which is not a bad payday on top of the check that they would
- 58:53have got for being national champion as well.
- 58:56I think it drops down. So if you yes top Irish and
- 59:01you're you're on sub 212, you get the five.
- 59:04Then if you come second and run sub 212, it cuts down a little
- 59:08bit and the same again for 3rd. So look, they still get a time
- 59:11bonus for running fast and but just not the full work.
- 59:15Makes sense. Was were you still on the ground
- 59:19at home yesterday whilst this was going on?
- 59:21You flew yesterday afternoon, didn't you?
- 59:23Yeah, so I it was like live streamed.
- 59:28So I just like I'd love to go in and watch it and I've never
- 59:31actually watched Dublin Marathon.
- 59:33And so I'd love to assess in my book a list to do.
- 59:35I don't like debut in Dublin. So that's next year.
- 59:38Hopefully I'll I'll be on the ground and just watching us or
- 59:41maybe pace or something. Be nice.
- 59:43Well, yeah, maybe just on that point with these guys, you know,
- 59:46these guys are targeting these times, you know, sub 210 and
- 59:50because it was Jake talking about in terms of maybe Euro
- 59:53standards, maybe you needed to run 2/10/15 or whatever that be.
- 59:56But maybe that's what some of these guys are targeting.
- 59:59And you know that the league Kenyan groups going out at
- 1:00:022O82O7 pace, perhaps for you like the national championships,
- 1:00:07you think there'd be one or two pacemakers for some of these
- 1:00:09guys, right? That would be able to pull them
- 1:00:11through halfway or something? Yeah, they're definitely I think
- 1:00:13a few like there definitely was pacemakers for like that's some
- 1:00:17220 and all sort of stuff which I would be able to now break
- 1:00:21running sub 210 pacemaker. I don't know if that's in my
- 1:00:23wheelhouse boss. Yeah, no, it's definitely maybe
- 1:00:28for next year because even just like it's a local crowd, if I
- 1:00:31say feel amazing, like when I was even doing my local 5K, it
- 1:00:34felt amazing. Everyone cheering like Dublin
- 1:00:3725,000 people running the streets lined.
- 1:00:40It's just, yeah, incredible. Yeah, I was going to ask.
- 1:00:42So like what? The whole city have pretty much
- 1:00:44been shut down whilst this is going on and they're like
- 1:00:47everyone kind of come out to watch type thing.
- 1:00:50Yeah, and like in Ireland, it's never the best weather.
- 1:00:53Like it was showers, it was windy.
- 1:00:55So to even like have like massive crowds, it's it's
- 1:00:59pretty, it's pretty cool all. Right then, Benny 10.
- 1:01:01Dean, you want to talk us through these results?
- 1:01:04What happened there? Yeah.
- 1:01:06In the men's, the winner was a familiar name at the minute,
- 1:01:10Adam Goddard in 2836, followed closely by Ed Marks in 2837 and
- 1:01:16then Brian Fay, the Irishman in 2847, and the women's top three
- 1:01:23was Liam Pompiani in 3146. I think that's 2 seconds of the
- 1:01:29record she'd set the year prior. Course record Bronte Oates 3246
- 1:01:36so a minute behind and Holly Campbell in 3rd 3302 yeah, I
- 1:01:40watched the live stream. I don't know if E either of you
- 1:01:42guys managed to catch any of it, but yeah, I thought they did a
- 1:01:47very good job of streaming the event.
- 1:01:48The, the, the race looks like a lot of fun, like I feel like in
- 1:01:52terms of a row 10K this time of year, because it gets more
- 1:01:56difficult as we're getting, as it starts to get warmer and
- 1:01:59warmer down under to find suitable races to to get after.
- 1:02:03But this one seems to be a good one for like the back end of the
- 1:02:05year for sure. Yeah, the stream was really
- 1:02:09good. The races were pretty exciting.
- 1:02:11Like in the men's race towards the back end, Adam Goddard and
- 1:02:16Ed Marks were sort of neck and neck the whole way.
- 1:02:19And Ed Marks probably looked the better of the two, like looked
- 1:02:24really smooth, really comfortable, less fate like
- 1:02:27pained facial expression. But Adam got out.
- 1:02:30I think it's quite quick Isn't he's got a fairly quick 1500
- 1:02:34metre time. And yeah, just managed to close
- 1:02:38harder. You could see Brian Fay in the
- 1:02:40background sort of wanting to sort of stay connected, but the
- 1:02:46the the top two guys were able to just St. stay ahead.
- 1:02:52And then Leanne's race was good that she had a few couple, at
- 1:02:55least a couple of pacemakers and you could see they're sort of
- 1:02:59targeting that race record. And yeah, she was sort of not
- 1:03:03really a sniff or was maybe just outside it when they turned the
- 1:03:06final corner, but closed really quickly and you could see her
- 1:03:10sort of racing the clock and bit of a raw smile knowing when she
- 1:03:13crossed the line that maybe she just missed it and the
- 1:03:15commentators were all across it. It was really good.
- 1:03:18Good stream and a good race. Yeah, So Leanne just missed her
- 1:03:21PBS around 10 seconds quicker than that.
- 1:03:24So obviously she's almost kind of maxed out her performance on
- 1:03:28the day there. And then she's won by a minute
- 1:03:32as well. So comfortable victory and kind
- 1:03:34of shows like how well she's going.
- 1:03:38I guess at the minute that's kind of where she's at.
- 1:03:41But one thing I thought of when I seen this and I know she's
- 1:03:45she's won the race. So like you can only beat what's
- 1:03:48in front of you almost. You have to consider that as
- 1:03:51well. But isn't Izzy's PBS like a
- 1:03:54minute quicker than that again? So it's like shit, it just makes
- 1:03:59you appreciate how how fast Izzy's 10K time is.
- 1:04:05And also with the with the men's race as you described.
- 1:04:08Yeah, I couldn't believe that because I watched it back after
- 1:04:12the fact. So I already knew the results
- 1:04:15and I couldn't believe as I'm watching Goddard like burying
- 1:04:18himself looking like shit with 200 to go with marks like
- 1:04:23sitting in his wheel. If we're going to talk about
- 1:04:26cycling and looking like $1,000,000, I couldn't believe
- 1:04:30that he didn't manage to pass him, but it just looked like
- 1:04:33God. Perhaps once a bit more.
- 1:04:35Yeah, and it's probably a bit of confidence.
- 1:04:37Well, like he belief and positive thinking counts for a
- 1:04:42lot of momentum. And he's sort of been winning
- 1:04:44everything, right? And so it's a good habit to be
- 1:04:47in. That brings us to training week
- 1:04:50so I can give a quick update on where I'm at because there has
- 1:04:55been some slight progression. I did see the physio again last
- 1:04:59week and we've introduced some cross trains.
- 1:05:03So during the the deload period I have been cycling and swimming
- 1:05:08only so there's been like 0 load.
- 1:05:10But now that I've built up some more strength through the calfs
- 1:05:14and established a proper gym routine, I've been given the
- 1:05:18green light to do a cross train three times a week and after the
- 1:05:22cross train, do some drills. So like just the high knees, the
- 1:05:27ass flicks and the a skips. So that's been fun to kind of
- 1:05:35start doing that. Well, the the cross trainer
- 1:05:37hasn't been fun. To be fair, it's absolutely
- 1:05:39boring as anything, isn't it? It's the the longest hour you'll
- 1:05:42ever encounter, especially by the third one of the week where
- 1:05:46I've listened to all my podcasts and watch all my Youtubes and
- 1:05:50I'm just staring at the screen for an hour.
- 1:05:52It's, it certainly isn't passed by quick, but I've enjoyed being
- 1:05:56able to do the drills and I can feel the heel a little bit
- 1:06:01afterwards, so like throughout the remainder of the day.
- 1:06:03But it's not a point where I'm like, oh, I probably won't do
- 1:06:07that next time. You should play.
- 1:06:10It was a solitaire, Tommy Tedge. And he does, if so, he do a 90
- 1:06:15minute on the elliptical and he plays solitaire for like 90
- 1:06:17minutes, which is, yeah, crazy. That's awesome.
- 1:06:24I don't mind that actually. It's not about.
- 1:06:26Yeah. Speaking of which, I was, I was
- 1:06:30with him yesterday actually. And I don't know if you've seen
- 1:06:34on Strava, he's run A204K week last week and he I was saying,
- 1:06:40oh, we'll use the cross train like crazy.
- 1:06:42Like you would do 2 hour stints and stuff.
- 1:06:45And he's like, yeah. And now I'm, I'm doing 0 cross
- 1:06:48training. Like when I first came back from
- 1:06:51my injury, I was doing normal double s as a cross trainer.
- 1:06:53And now here I am running A204K week.
- 1:06:57And between me, him and Dan, who was also there, we're kind of
- 1:07:03cross referencing the logic behind his 204 kilometre week,
- 1:07:08weighing up the the risk versus reward.
- 1:07:11But yeah, he's, he's building into Valencia himself and his
- 1:07:14confidence is up. So hopefully they they make him
- 1:07:17not break him. But yeah, back to just where I'm
- 1:07:20at. The idea is to do this for two
- 1:07:23to three weeks. And then if nothing crazy
- 1:07:26happens during this, as in like it allows me to do it every
- 1:07:29other day and stuff, then we can start a walk run program.
- 1:07:33So we shall see. Which I've had eyes on.
- 1:07:36I think it's six weeks to get from nothing up to 340 minute
- 1:07:42jogs in a week, so hopefully can look forward to starting that
- 1:07:48but not counting any chickens just yet.
- 1:07:50All right. In terms of my update, yeah,
- 1:07:56not, not too much to report some more altar G running, some more
- 1:08:01cycling. I've been given some permission
- 1:08:05to sort of in increase the amount of, of load through
- 1:08:09through that. Oh, have an MRI booked in for
- 1:08:13tomorrow, so to get an update there and then a meeting with
- 1:08:17the sports doc on the 7th of November.
- 1:08:21But yeah, hopefully have more insight in the next couple of
- 1:08:25weeks. All right, see you off.
- 1:08:26I'll go for my wish. Mr. Professional Athletes and
- 1:08:30it's training camp. For two weeks and two weeks
- 1:08:33only. Restore some credibility into
- 1:08:35the podcast? Come on.
- 1:08:38That and 20th. Let me just find Australia.
- 1:08:43I'm so bad. We've known over so long and I
- 1:08:45still don't know the best way to do about a training week.
- 1:08:50I'm surprised you're not an 100 and diary man, to be fair.
- 1:08:55I do have it, but it's in my suitcase and comfy here now,
- 1:09:02right? So after race on the Sunday, I
- 1:09:05just done that 60 minutes easy. And Monday morning and it was
- 1:09:10grim and I thought it was my my vest, my sort of like reflective
- 1:09:15vest, its debut. So I was seen by all the cares.
- 1:09:20But yeah, that was only 12.5 K, 448 for 60 minutes.
- 1:09:25And then that evening, I don't 45 minutes in strides.
- 1:09:29Like I feel like with the strides like it, it adds another
- 1:09:32like chunk to the actual run. So 45 minutes in strides, that
- 1:09:36was like 58 minutes of like running.
- 1:09:38So that was my Monday evening, just the easy double.
- 1:09:42Then Tuesday morning I done a 2 by 10 minutes off a 5 minute jog
- 1:09:49in the middle. So 50 minute warm up, 10
- 1:09:52minutes, 5 minutes jog, 10 minutes, 5 minutes jog.
- 1:09:56And they were in and around around 3 fifteens.
- 1:10:03We'll call it pretty honest. I was just up along.
- 1:10:08I like a stripper Rd. that is less where I'm from.
- 1:10:12There's certainly like 2K or 1 1/2 kilometers of like lit Rd.
- 1:10:19which is terrible. But yeah, so that was my Tuesday
- 1:10:23morning. And then Tuesday evening I did
- 1:10:26similar, but instead of 10 minute reps on 15 minute reps.
- 1:10:30And I think for these they were a little bit faster.
- 1:10:32So in total, the session was the hard bit.
- 1:10:35The session was 10K 317 pace and then the splits were around
- 1:10:43let's say three times a little bit faster, but I feel like it's
- 1:10:48so hard to get going in the morning, like up a 55 like it's
- 1:10:53just and it's dark. It's just long.
- 1:10:56I don't know, Eh, So that was a big day.
- 1:10:58That's nearly 30 K We're running.
- 1:10:59So Wednesday I sort of shake it easy and then I don't a 60
- 1:11:04minute bike ride in the morning. I feel I cannot get my hurry up
- 1:11:08on the bike I've really, really like.
- 1:11:10I feel like I'm going all out and I don't know if it's better
- 1:11:14to like go for like like an easy enough resistance and like pedal
- 1:11:19faster or go for a hard resistance and pedal slower.
- 1:11:23But then my quads just fall apart.
- 1:11:26I feel like they're just not conditioned for the bike at all.
- 1:11:29I do reckon it probably took maybe like 4 weeks before my
- 1:11:33legs got condition enough to be able to convert to then become a
- 1:11:38cardio based IT like problem than a leg muscular problem
- 1:11:43problem. Yeah, and it's just like, yeah,
- 1:11:46same also, but you're working it differently.
- 1:11:48And but I feel like that's sort of like helping recover because
- 1:11:52the Tuesdays big if I'm still like doing under 67 minute run,
- 1:11:56it's just, you know, my body that little bit more and my body
- 1:11:58just can't hack it unfortunately.
- 1:12:00And then Wednesday evening I got a massage.
- 1:12:04So it was like my last massage before I go away.
- 1:12:06So I just made sure to get my name last week because my
- 1:12:08physio, he then treats the elites for a double marathon.
- 1:12:13So he was gone like all weekend, bringing them from like Thursday
- 1:12:16or Friday to Sunday evening. And then Thursday mornings was
- 1:12:24another. It was sort of like my last Test
- 1:12:26before I get off here, though. It was 3 by 10 minutes off a 4
- 1:12:30minute jog and yeah, it was like 11.5.
- 1:12:35I went drove into like my a local village, don't Joplin and
- 1:12:39because that has like a load of housing estates and they're all
- 1:12:42lit. So I just feel safer running
- 1:12:44around here. Not going to get by a car, but I
- 1:12:47was feeling really good on these ones.
- 1:12:51I think for the 1st 10 minutes I averaged like three O 610
- 1:12:55minutes was three O 6 and the urge 10 minutes was three O 7.
- 1:13:00Now it is relatively flat as well so not many hills, but the
- 1:13:03highway was under control as well which is which is what I'm
- 1:13:09sort of looking for in them. Tabber runs and after that I had
- 1:13:13an 8 by 8 seconds drives just to pick up the temple a little bit.
- 1:13:20What? What shoes are you wearing for
- 1:13:22these like Rd. sessions? So for this one, I don't like
- 1:13:28wearing like a cabin plate the whole time.
- 1:13:30So the Tuesday I'm pretty sure I wore the Boston twelves.
- 1:13:37So it's not a super shoe, but there is still a like the cabin
- 1:13:40rods in them. And then for this one on the
- 1:13:42Thursday, I actually wore like a beat up pair of meta speed sky
- 1:13:48plus or something. So I think it's like the second
- 1:13:51release version. So they are like done, but
- 1:13:54they're just a lighter shoe and they're the first ones I pulled
- 1:13:57out my box shoe box at home. So I was like, OK, like they're
- 1:14:02a nice shoe to run in like this. Sort of it's easier to go faster
- 1:14:04in them then. But like out here now I don't
- 1:14:06have any cabin shoes. No, I was tossing that up like I
- 1:14:09can only bring certain amount of shoes.
- 1:14:11So I actually brought no caravans.
- 1:14:12I brought the night structures. I brought a Puma deep velocity,
- 1:14:19Puma velocity, just a carbon trainer.
- 1:14:21No, just ah, just a trainer. But it's like soft and poppy and
- 1:14:25I brought that for like I can do up tempo stuff in that.
- 1:14:29And then I brought the rabble as well to sort of, it's sort of
- 1:14:31like a like the old rabble, the V4, which is like a race and
- 1:14:35fly. And so I can do some sort of
- 1:14:37faster from that. And then I've got spikes, so
- 1:14:40I'll do some spike wraps as well.
- 1:14:42Is this just to double down on the point you made the other
- 1:14:45week about Carbon Choose being overrided?
- 1:14:48Yeah, I'm just trying to prove it.
- 1:14:54Isn't it anyway? Yeah, I don't have them.
- 1:14:57I actually don't have like a proper pair of carbon shoes like
- 1:14:59I'm the street fly, but you wouldn't call that really like
- 1:15:01like a chunky like marked calf, my half marked American carbon
- 1:15:04shoe. And then I've got the New
- 1:15:05Balance ones, the V4, but I don't really not a big fan of
- 1:15:08them. I feel like they're just soft
- 1:15:10and not sort of what I like. So yeah, I'm going all scale out
- 1:15:15here and I'll either make me or break me.
- 1:15:18But like the foam still the new foam compound, right?
- 1:15:21Like you're still, these are still nice, nice shoes.
- 1:15:24They're just probably it's it's almost like the great good
- 1:15:29training shoe because then you'll go to this higher stack
- 1:15:32more foam with a rocker in it come race day.
- 1:15:38Yeah. Well, the structure is just like
- 1:15:40there's not much balance in that one.
- 1:15:42I just OK, I like just like how it feels underneath that the PM
- 1:15:45one, there is a pop in that one. I really like that PM a foam.
- 1:15:48I don't know what it is, but it feels like really, really nice
- 1:15:52too. But still, it's not a big chunky
- 1:15:54shoe. It's just like sort of looks
- 1:15:55like an old school type shoe, but it's got like a nice foam in
- 1:15:57it. And then the rabble like I'm
- 1:15:59going to leave the rabble out here like it's nearly done.
- 1:16:01I just brought it out to finish it off really.
- 1:16:03So have you got access to a track there then with you taken
- 1:16:06spikes issue? Yes, there is like I think him
- 1:16:10Mulk Tear used to train out here a bit.
- 1:16:12Oh. Here we can training camp with
- 1:16:16Mulka Tear. So for anyone who doesn't know
- 1:16:19Mulka tear he he's a 5K10K track athlete.
- 1:16:25Let's say he's done a few 1500 as well.
- 1:16:27But he he got popped. Well not popped he got caught
- 1:16:33for whereabouts failure. So basically drug testers came
- 1:16:36to wherever he said he was going to be and he wasn't there.
- 1:16:39And it's happened three times in a row.
- 1:16:41And then so he got banned and then he was something about, he
- 1:16:45appeared or something. And he is after getting a longer
- 1:16:49ban now because like they double down and that he like he, he's
- 1:16:52hiding something basically. Yeah, I think didn't they try
- 1:16:56and like appeal it and then it turned out he'd like falsified
- 1:16:59some of the documents around his failed whereabouts.
- 1:17:02Like it turns out he'd he was, yeah.
- 1:17:07He's very like, he was anyway vocal on social media.
- 1:17:11OK, what did he say? Favored the comment?
- 1:17:14He was like, oh, he. Said someone like, oh, your girl
- 1:17:16is looking at MO Will your girl wants to be Mao or something
- 1:17:21like this, wasn't it? Yeah.
- 1:17:23Something that rage I am. On the group ride, I used the
- 1:17:28term pot and kettle to the bloke that tried to have a crack at me
- 1:17:32after it just sat on my wheel and those sprints.
- 1:17:34But bit of pot and kettle with you, you know, you all this drug
- 1:17:37chat and now you're you see, well, you're seemingly jump
- 1:17:42ship. You sort of, you know, wave
- 1:17:44wading into murky waters by the sounds.
- 1:17:48If I run 28 minutes in Valencia, you can you can report me.
- 1:17:54I'll be tracking your whereabouts.
- 1:17:57Yeah. The accusations will be flying
- 1:18:00around. If you're if massive improvement
- 1:18:02comes on the back of this training camp, I'll be telling
- 1:18:05you. Liam Stocky will be blowing up
- 1:18:07in the clubhouse. Hurricane.
- 1:18:09But yeah, they've where I am, there's this thing called the
- 1:18:11Yellow Brick Road and it's just a map.
- 1:18:13It's just a big, massive, long straight that loads of people
- 1:18:15use. Ben Connor actually, I think
- 1:18:17trains out here a good bit. The GB athlete and bought again
- 1:18:22and they were big, like complex, like into like 5-10 minute job
- 1:18:26getaway and whatever track. They've got a load of like
- 1:18:29football pitches and all sort of stuff.
- 1:18:30So it's like the location is ground, like I've got a beach to
- 1:18:33like run along. And yeah, it's, it's nice to
- 1:18:36hear. You should have a look at some
- 1:18:39of the segments unlike the track or the road sessions that you do
- 1:18:43and see who's done sessions there.
- 1:18:46Yeah, I actually will because I got to have a premium for being
- 1:18:49out here because it shows you the roots, which is handy.
- 1:18:52Like, I don't know, that's the only time I use travel premium
- 1:18:55is for the reefs. So yeah, I'll go.
- 1:18:59And what was it, crown digging or something?
- 1:19:02Trying to run myself into the oven.
- 1:19:04What was so? What sort of mileage have you
- 1:19:06been running recently to be fair for comparison?
- 1:19:09What have I done? Well, I'll finish off the week
- 1:19:11and then I'll. All right.
- 1:19:13So Friday, total rest day, do nothing, feed up.
- 1:19:17And then Saturday was a big one, so 15 minute tempo into then I 5
- 1:19:26minute rest and I changed my shoes and then I went into 16 by
- 1:19:31300 meters. This is around my 337 meter
- 1:19:35track. So my poach is like the ton the
- 1:19:37wheel out like fully measure like the 200 meters.
- 1:19:40So it was 16 by 300 meters off like 50m jog or 35 seconds
- 1:19:45recovery. So I was hitting them three
- 1:19:47hundreds in like between like 51 and 49 and like I sort of pushed
- 1:19:54a little hard on the 15 tempo at the start.
- 1:19:58So I really started feeling it in the last, like I'm going to
- 1:20:03say the last half of the of the stranger mirrors.
- 1:20:06And in my head I was thinking that, all right, so if 16 wants
- 1:20:09to get to 10, that's when the session starts.
- 1:20:11Just to try and make it seem like easier for no, it was it
- 1:20:15was. It wasn't pretty, but luck done.
- 1:20:1811K worth of work. And then son, oh, that afternoon
- 1:20:23I you could have for an easy double of four or five minutes
- 1:20:24with my brother and it was nice to run with someone because I'm
- 1:20:29normally just by myself. And then Sunday morning before I
- 1:20:32flew out, I'd done 91 minutes and that last 20 minutes was
- 1:20:37like a little pick up. So yeah, that was my week.
- 1:20:40It was the last few weeks have been.
- 1:20:44So I had a damn week after nationals.
- 1:20:48Oh no, I sort of had a knee that knee Nagle.
- 1:20:51So after nationals around 41 week, 41 kilometers that were
- 1:20:54down week. Then I got off to 13133 and I my
- 1:20:58body was sort of aching a little bit and that's when I introduced
- 1:21:00the Wednesday cycle. Then I was 84 kilometers, 100
- 1:21:03and 416. Then last week what then it was
- 1:21:07a race week, so I don't 85 and then the week just gone was 124.
- 1:21:13So and that's what, an hour cycle?
- 1:21:17So this week will probably be similar.
- 1:21:20I'll just have a lot more cross training.
- 1:21:22I'll then just introduce a few triples, taking relief at Jake's
- 1:21:26book, but just not as crazy. But yeah, feeling good.
- 1:21:31So that's main. That's good.
- 1:21:34With a with a full day's rest as well in there, that's good.
- 1:21:38Basically 2 because the Wednesday and I don't run so
- 1:21:42it's a 5 days which is yeah it's gone.
- 1:21:44Yeah, good. Look forward to your recap next
- 1:21:47week. See who's who's crowns you've
- 1:21:48went and chased and stole, and who you've how many sessions or
- 1:21:52coffees you've gone for with Muketeer.
- 1:21:56I'll try and find a way. I'll text him, I'll like.
- 1:21:59I'm going to have to have a look on his Instagram and see if he's
- 1:22:01coincidentally back in Spain now.
- 1:22:08This so good even though he doesn't have a word of English.
- 1:22:10That's another thing I noticed out here, like I don't know
- 1:22:14whether it's just because I was in Australia and I got soft
- 1:22:16mirror there and then I park home like the language, like a
- 1:22:21lot of them don't speak English. I'm like even just I went for a
- 1:22:23coffee and I was like, ah, coffee.
- 1:22:26And she was like, Oh yeah. So cafe con latte americano and
- 1:22:32then this other one die. I like, I sort of panicked and I
- 1:22:35just said cafe con la tape, which is, is that cafe con
- 1:22:39leche? Is that is that a latte?
- 1:22:41Coffee with milk. Yeah, but yeah, so I went for
- 1:22:44that one. But I don't really like a Milky
- 1:22:46coffee and it just tastes like milk then.
- 1:22:49So yeah, I just need a brush up for my Spanish.
- 1:22:51Basically put the bread out here.
- 1:22:53It's like you go into just a random little shop and they've
- 1:22:55like these warm like baguettes of bread and they're just so
- 1:22:58nice. I'm going to be rolling home out
- 1:23:01here. Where did you fly into?
- 1:23:02What? Like where actually is the
- 1:23:04place? So I'm in Terviaka, so I flew
- 1:23:07into Alicante, an Alicante like an hour's north.
- 1:23:11So when I was actually flying in, I flew over Valencia.
- 1:23:13So an hour north of Alicante is Valencia and then an hour S is
- 1:23:17Tervaca. So I think the local soccer team
- 1:23:20is like Alche or something like that.
- 1:23:22And then I think it's like a four E to an hour bus ride under
- 1:23:26play and then Real Sociedad, not this Friday, the following
- 1:23:30Friday. And I was thinking, oh, I'd love
- 1:23:33to go and like to see a Little League again, but then a sort of
- 1:23:36like messed me up for my like, it's only like 9:00 on a Friday
- 1:23:40night. Which is like, stupid.
- 1:23:42And sort of messed me up for like my Saturday session.
- 1:23:45So like I'm out here to train so.
- 1:23:48He really loves to get to bed early.
- 1:23:49Hey, really? 10:00 for us in Perth, yeah.
- 1:24:01Just come here with me. Yeah, one day.
- 1:24:05Yeah. So no, I'm loving.
- 1:24:07It's nice. Is where's Benidorm relative to
- 1:24:11that? Is Benidorm off off the coast is
- 1:24:13an island or is it on mainland? Let me.
- 1:24:16Look up on Google Maps here. Benidorm is what happened.
- 1:24:22Directions an hour and 16 minute drive.
- 1:24:24You can always have a nice out next weekend, celebrate the
- 1:24:28training camp. That's probably.
- 1:24:30Remote here is. Yeah.
- 1:24:33And it's downtime. Well, nice segue to be fair from
- 1:24:37Mokatea into the roof Chapman Gethitch news item.
- 1:24:41So obviously she took a provisional suspension earlier
- 1:24:45this year on the back of the diuretic that was found in a
- 1:24:49system the masking agent, which is called hydrochlorothiazide or
- 1:24:53HCTZ. And the reason why it's
- 1:24:57reappeared in the news again now is because like the so she
- 1:25:01accepted the provisional suspension, whereas now it's
- 1:25:04like actually been implemented and handed to her officially as
- 1:25:08a three-year ban. And some of the news that has
- 1:25:11kind of come out regarding the investigation, I don't know if
- 1:25:14he's have seen, but they've done all sorts of analysis on their
- 1:25:18phone and stuff. And I mean, you'll probably find
- 1:25:21this quite funny. They found like pictures of
- 1:25:23Anavar and all these other like obvious signs that she's doping,
- 1:25:29like talking about programs and how to use it and stuff.
- 1:25:34And she's claiming complete innocence at first, stating that
- 1:25:39must have just automatically saved down to her phone from
- 1:25:41like a WhatsApp chat that she's in.
- 1:25:44And then that in itself is she's clearly just trying to detach
- 1:25:48yourself from blame. But then you look at it from the
- 1:25:51other angle and you're like, well, what you're in, you're
- 1:25:54saying that you're in WhatsApp chats where you're all speaking
- 1:25:56about how to dope, and just because you haven't actively
- 1:25:59saved the image, you mean that you're not involved in it?
- 1:26:06But yeah, it's one of the main things as well that comes from
- 1:26:10it is obviously her record, the 20956, because that was prior to
- 1:26:15when they found this diuretic in their system that still
- 1:26:19tragically stands. However, they are actively
- 1:26:24trying to find proof that potentially she was taking it
- 1:26:31ahead of that performance. And they will, they've World
- 1:26:34Athletics have said they will look to like kind of obviously
- 1:26:38pursue removing that record if they can find some sort of
- 1:26:42evidence that confirms she was taking it.
- 1:26:45Well, I'd. It really annoys me the way she
- 1:26:48got caught for the team dot hides the actual drug she was
- 1:26:52taking. Like we still don't know what
- 1:26:55drugs she was taking. We only got taught we only got
- 1:26:58found out the masking agent. It's like they still haven't
- 1:27:01found the main thing that they're back good at hiding it
- 1:27:04hiding it. And I'd say she just messed up
- 1:27:07on the taking too much of the masking agent, which is super
- 1:27:11annoying and factor her by marketing record still stands
- 1:27:14Like put put one and one together.
- 1:27:17She had to start taking drugs after us.
- 1:27:19Let's be real. Well, exactly.
- 1:27:22And the annoying thing is she was tested 15 times out of
- 1:27:25competition. So she's navigated all of these
- 1:27:29tests whilst clearly being on it, which doesn't kind of fill
- 1:27:34you with hope regarding like everything else that goes on
- 1:27:37right now and what will go on in the years to come.
- 1:27:41The fact that she got away with it 14 out of 15 times.
- 1:27:44That worries me that like Ethiopia is just sitting there
- 1:27:48having like barely any like positive drug tests.
- 1:27:53Like that worries me as well. She did end up saying something
- 1:27:56along the lines of like, Oh yeah, she did.
- 1:27:59She took a pill because she was feeling unwell.
- 1:28:02That was like kind of left on the side from her housemaid.
- 1:28:05And when she's provided evidence of this pill because she's she's
- 1:28:09admitted that she took one, apparently.
- 1:28:11And then when she's sent them the photo or when they've got
- 1:28:15hold of these pills, you can see that like four or five of the
- 1:28:19pills have been popped. But she's, she said she took it
- 1:28:22once. So it's like, well, where's all
- 1:28:26those other empty packets come from?
- 1:28:28Hey they get hold of her phone. Like like she hasn't been
- 1:28:31arrested or Anthony assumed. As soon as she gets caught she
- 1:28:34just deletes everything off her phone.
- 1:28:35Yeah, she must have voluntarily handed it over, I guess, because
- 1:28:40she probably couldn't be physically forced to.
- 1:28:43Like you say, she wasn't under arrest.
- 1:28:46About Italian agents, like no, what are you doing you idiot?
- 1:28:51Yeah, and somehow he'll he'll still come out clean like the
- 1:28:54the word Rosa won't appear in that WhatsApp once.
- 1:28:58Even though it's he's the advent of it.
- 1:29:02It's pulling all the strings and one thought I did have on it as
- 1:29:06well. Like it shouldn't really make
- 1:29:07light of it but do you reckon she's like the the biggest super
- 1:29:12responders to drugs? Like her PB prior to this was
- 1:29:152/14 so she's took 4 1/2 minutes off her PB like everyone else
- 1:29:23who? The reason why it's a problem
- 1:29:25for her is because it was so bloody obvious, whereas like
- 1:29:28everyone else is obviously making improvements but make
- 1:29:32running PBS by like 30 seconds or a minute or whatever.
- 1:29:35And she seems to have taken to these drugs remarkably well, if
- 1:29:40you could say that. Yeah, like if like she she could
- 1:29:43have run 214 clean or she could have been, she might have upped
- 1:29:47the dosage now and then she was trying to cover.
- 1:29:50She's like, oh shit. So she took a lot of that cover
- 1:29:53up. Yeah.
- 1:29:54I don't know. It's, it's just so sad that it's
- 1:29:56come to this. And remember, like her, her half
- 1:30:00PB in the marathon, she broke it back-to-back essentially, didn't
- 1:30:05she? So like that's how much of an
- 1:30:07influence this has had on her you that you wouldn't see.
- 1:30:10So what like Kaplima or Kaplima is a bit of an extreme example,
- 1:30:14but maybe take like Mansa's half PB.
- 1:30:17What's that like 58 or something?
- 1:30:20It'd be like him running a marathon and breaking 58
- 1:30:23back-to-back in the marathon. So therefore running like 156 in
- 1:30:27the marathon. Like that's how much of a jump
- 1:30:29or response she's had from it. No one does.
- 1:30:33She's she's probably so annoyed that she's in hindsight she
- 1:30:38might look back and think why? Why does it run that bloody fast
- 1:30:40and draw so much attention to myself?
- 1:30:43The I do remember Speaking of Owen's mate Katia though during
- 1:30:47COVID. Like his name, he he's not, he
- 1:30:51came out of the blue and like he made some massive jumps when he
- 1:30:54went from like mid to high thirteens to 12:50 for 5K.
- 1:31:02Like, yeah, like and, and those are the things that, and I
- 1:31:07remember when they were happening.
- 1:31:09It's sort of like if the rate of improvement, if there's no, if
- 1:31:12you can't, sometimes the story hasn't been told.
- 1:31:15And so therefore you're like, well, we're just unfamiliar with
- 1:31:18the person. Therefore we don't necessarily
- 1:31:20know what they're doing in training and how they've managed
- 1:31:23to improve over time. But when the rate of
- 1:31:26improvement's so rapid, when you sort of look at their World
- 1:31:29Athletics profile and it sort of doesn't make sense, they're
- 1:31:32either doing something exceptional in training or
- 1:31:35they're doing something exceptional in and out of
- 1:31:37training. Yeah, I remember as well that
- 1:31:40because like the Diamond leagues, week in, week out, he
- 1:31:43was just blitzing them, wasn't he?
- 1:31:45And even like the commentators and people kind of in the know
- 1:31:49didn't really know who he was at first.
- 1:31:51Yeah, I think it was made worse. Like Stewie mixed Wayne.
- 1:31:55There's like an Aussie doing very well and he was sort of
- 1:31:57getting overshadowed a little bit by this guy who, you know,
- 1:32:02just burst onto the scene very quickly.
- 1:32:04Hike Mocheteer still has Olympic athlete, European champion,
- 1:32:07world silver medalist, European and national record holder and
- 1:32:115K like he still has all that on his Instagram bio like.
- 1:32:17Is he active on there? Does he post and stuff his last?
- 1:32:20Post. Was.
- 1:32:22The 13th of August and the caption is there is no rush at
- 1:32:27this moment, just me, fruit and sweet certainty that everything
- 1:32:32is well. Yeah, he is nuts.
- 1:32:34But yeah, I'll text him to see if he comes on the pod.
- 1:32:40Put the feelers out. So he'll go for that interview
- 1:32:43next week. So he went.
- 1:32:46So this is his 1500m progression.
- 1:32:49So in 2018 he ran 3:40 20/19. He ran 337-2020.
- 1:32:55He ran 3:30 6/20/21. He ran 3/28.
- 1:33:00So yeah, not bad. I wonder when he'll be back
- 1:33:02because he wouldn't have got a lifetime ban.
- 1:33:04Would have been like four or five years maybe.
- 1:33:07He'd probably be back in the mix for LA.
- 1:33:09He'll make you know he'll he'll make you aware that he's back.
- 1:33:13OK, he'll know about it. I did see on, on Instagram the
- 1:33:17UK Athletics and I found this like hugely ironic and quite
- 1:33:21bizarre that there was, there was a post confirming that they
- 1:33:25had broke even for the first time in eight years and they
- 1:33:29were operating with 150, a £107,000 surplus, which in light
- 1:33:37of like the the light team that they sent to Tokyo.
- 1:33:40It's a bit of a joke really, isn't it, that they're then
- 1:33:44boasting about now being in a surplus and having extra cash
- 1:33:48sat there? But are are they a full profit
- 1:33:50organization? Well, and is this is what I was
- 1:33:53thinking as well, like why would that be something that they'd be
- 1:33:57stating? They're, they're government
- 1:33:59funded and they're there to then just what funding they get
- 1:34:03distribute the the, the issue is not the, the, it's not about
- 1:34:08them making money per SE. It's about where that money's
- 1:34:10going and the fact that it doesn't go to athletes like the
- 1:34:15the fact that you have people qualifying for championships and
- 1:34:19not being allowed to participate because the local authority
- 1:34:22doesn't allow them to, yet has money to sort of, you know, put
- 1:34:27into their own administration. And what you'd really love is
- 1:34:31transparency. Like I work for a large
- 1:34:33corporate and the amount of effort that has to go into
- 1:34:36creating transparency and what we do, you know, into as far as
- 1:34:41corporate responsibility and like license to operate, we have
- 1:34:45to do a lot of work in that space.
- 1:34:46You'd think these government organizations have to be very
- 1:34:50transparent with how they're spending their money, or they
- 1:34:52should be. Yeah, I don't know if you guys
- 1:34:54are aware, but we actually, you went out, we commented on the
- 1:34:58post saying I'm sure all those athletes who weren't selected to
- 1:35:02run the marathon are thrilled by this news.
- 1:35:07We, we got like 60 odd likes on it and all, all the other
- 1:35:10comments are of similar elk as well, just people having a crack
- 1:35:14at them. But we, we were there first.
- 1:35:16To be fair, I think we've kind of influenced everyone else.
- 1:35:19Oh. Dear.
- 1:35:21Oh, that's good, Yeah. I wouldn't, I don't use our
- 1:35:26social media to comment on your behalf some other things, but I
- 1:35:29felt that this was, we were well aligned on this stance.
- 1:35:34Bad complaints here. It's not long for the ride.
- 1:35:39That's it. Last item is the New York
- 1:35:43Marathon is next weekend. So I mean, I don't know if we
- 1:35:47want to talk about the fields in depth.
- 1:35:49We can mention it, I guess. It's obviously New York
- 1:35:54Marathon. It's one of the majors.
- 1:35:55So we'll we'll recap it properly next week.
- 1:35:58And the fields have been out there in the public for a while
- 1:36:01now. I think we we mentioned it when
- 1:36:03they were initially released, but they've made some changes or
- 1:36:07confirmation of withdrawals in the past week.
- 1:36:10So Bakili has been added, which means he races alongside
- 1:36:14Kipchogi yet again. So I'm sure despite the fact
- 1:36:19that they might not be up at the very front, they'll be a hell of
- 1:36:23a lot of coverage of those two. And it's always interesting
- 1:36:26watching them go side by side because, yeah, ultra
- 1:36:29competitiveness between them, because I think it's almost
- 1:36:33well, well accepted that one of the two of them is the ghost.
- 1:36:37And they probably understand that themselves and like to try
- 1:36:40and state claim as to which one of the two it is.
- 1:36:45And to compensate, I reckon he's compensating for the fact that a
- 1:36:49lot of people have been scratched as well.
- 1:36:51So Evans, Chibet, Gallata, Grofdahl, who's the Norwegian
- 1:36:56woman, Eilish Mccolgan, Alex Mayer, Johnny Mellor, Pat
- 1:37:00Tiernan and Simbu, the recent world champion, have all
- 1:37:03scratched. So a lot of big names withdraw
- 1:37:06in there, which is a shame for us and a shame for New York as
- 1:37:10as an event. I'm sure they're quite
- 1:37:12disappointed by that. But yeah, plenty of injuries
- 1:37:16floating around. I'm pretty sure I'm Fennil and
- 1:37:19Cormack from Ireland the became top ten in the Olympics or the
- 1:37:24world sorry and she's running New York.
- 1:37:27That'll be cool to see how she gets on.
- 1:37:28There's the Coffee Club. Who's the big?
- 1:37:29American. Who's the big American?
- 1:37:32They normally have like a standard.
- 1:37:35Well, isn't well joke. So the Coffee Club guys
- 1:37:41interviewed Joe Clecker this week, didn't they?
- 1:37:43And that was a good insight into him debuting, so that should be
- 1:37:48a fun watch. And then on there is Helen
- 1:37:53O'berry, who also trains with On.
- 1:37:55Is She Racing? I think as well.
- 1:37:59Yeah, I think it's hair and that Sharon Lakadi on the women's
- 1:38:02side. They're the usual New York
- 1:38:05sloths. But I listened to that Joe
- 1:38:09Clacko and myself, and I thought there was some interesting
- 1:38:11takeaways from it. Like did you have what he was
- 1:38:13saying about the fuel and he's going to potentially go up to
- 1:38:17175g an hour? Yeah, which is outrageous.
- 1:38:20It's interesting. Like I remember my first few
- 1:38:22marathons, I was feeling a lot more than even what I've thought
- 1:38:26I was. And I was sort of, I got
- 1:38:28comments around that being a bit sort of OTT.
- 1:38:33And now it seems much more commonplace, doesn't it?
- 1:38:35Like, And I think some of the like the Norwegians that are
- 1:38:40very transparent with what they do in terms of the Kona athletes
- 1:38:44and how much they're able to ingest, particularly when
- 1:38:46they're riding. And like, I mean, there's
- 1:38:49footage of Christian Blumenfeld through sort of throwing it up
- 1:38:52on the run later, but those guys really push the limits around
- 1:38:56how much they can tolerate. And yeah, it was just
- 1:38:58interesting insights into directionally what sports
- 1:39:02scientists think that they should be doing, which is
- 1:39:04consuming more. And the idea is that when you
- 1:39:07turn to that fat burning, that you're going to slow down.
- 1:39:10So yeah, I I enjoyed that chat from them.
- 1:39:15How would you even go about like fueling 175g an hour?
- 1:39:19So that's the average. Yale is like 30 so like.
- 1:39:24He was saying, yeah, so he was basically saying his his drink
- 1:39:27bottles. So like my pop tops are 250
- 1:39:30mils. So if you put like concentrated
- 1:39:32carbohydrates in there, you may be getting around 40 grams, 50
- 1:39:36grams of carbohydrates in there. Whereas he's taking on 400 mils.
- 1:39:40So you're, you're like if he's taking on 400 mils, he's saying
- 1:39:44he's basically able to get to 7 drink bottles.
- 1:39:48That's 2.8 litres that you're gonna hit that by taking on all
- 1:39:53that. So there is a way to do it.
- 1:39:55But yeah, you're ingesting 2.8 liters of fluid, which is not
- 1:39:59easy, that's for sure. Yeah, when you felt like.
- 1:40:03Go on I. Was going to say when they put
- 1:40:05it like that and said it's 2.8 liters and then you think about
- 1:40:09a litre bottle of anything, even a liter bottle of water and you
- 1:40:13then you consider you take it on almost three of those throughout
- 1:40:17the race. Like you don't think of it like
- 1:40:19that and it's a hell of a lot of liquid.
- 1:40:22I reckon after about 5 pop tops I'm starting to get like a
- 1:40:26stitch like it just feels I'm I feel full and then I start to
- 1:40:30turn to that's when I I strap gels to it because I'm
- 1:40:33struggling to ingest much more fluid.
- 1:40:37Like this washing around your belly, like, you know, when you
- 1:40:40feel like your water in your belly.
- 1:40:41Yeah, I don't know. That's what I love the big gels
- 1:40:44because like some of the Morton ones are like really thick, but
- 1:40:47the big Swans, they sort of like go down so easy.
- 1:40:50They're a little bit more liquid than the your standard gel.
- 1:40:53I think they like the pure ones. They're sort of that like
- 1:40:55consistency, which is just feel like it's like you're getting a
- 1:40:58drink and a gel at the same time.
- 1:41:00They bit of a mess on the bike sometimes trying to get in the
- 1:41:04the gels, the bigs gels. But I do appreciate Vlad helping
- 1:41:08us. New flavors taste very good, so
- 1:41:12kind of attest to that. That's why the the with the
- 1:41:14clacker thing, it's so good that the athletes are doing like
- 1:41:17these interviews and stuff because OK, obviously I knew who
- 1:41:20he was or I knew his name and stuff.
- 1:41:22But then until you hear of transparent conversation with
- 1:41:26him like that, you then make a bit of a connection with him and
- 1:41:29now you'll be actively like wanting him to run well and
- 1:41:31following him properly. Yep, which is why podcasts and
- 1:41:36and Instagram handles and YouTube channels, that's why so
- 1:41:39many pro athletes have their channel, because then you can
- 1:41:42actually as a way of storytelling and getting people
- 1:41:45excited, building hype for an event.
- 1:41:47Because absent that, the sport sort of the other narrators, the
- 1:41:50conventional sort of journalists and stuff don't do a good job of
- 1:41:54it. Go on the Let's run guys to do
- 1:42:01do a good job of it and they had some good some funny news items
- 1:42:05this week. Did you get round to it in the
- 1:42:09end? I did, yes.
- 1:42:10Good, good, good. A.
- 1:42:11Few laughs. I did very funny.
- 1:42:14It's interesting that they were talking about Joe Clackers now,
- 1:42:18like Ritzenheim's first Guinea pig over the marathon, isn't it?
- 1:42:22Like he's finally being able to coach someone towards a
- 1:42:25marathon, so obviously he's got great history and heritage in
- 1:42:29the marathon himself as an athlete.
- 1:42:30So yeah, interesting to follow from that point of view too.
- 1:42:34Well, whatever he does like it works with Helena Berry, like he
- 1:42:38writes her training so and she's like phenomenal.
- 1:42:42So it'd be interesting to see if Joe Clacker, because he's been
- 1:42:44such a good track athlete to see if he can like convert to the
- 1:42:48marathon because as we see with the some of the Kenyans just
- 1:42:51said them done the translation. I wonder if he he gave the the
- 1:42:55true story or the full picture as well as to why he's ended up
- 1:42:59running New York. So he kind of tried to paint it
- 1:43:01as it's a purely strategic decision in that he thinks he
- 1:43:07might be able to be most competitive there.
- 1:43:11But like, from a debut point of view like that, it's a tough
- 1:43:14selection, isn't it? You'd think perhaps the most
- 1:43:16conventional route would be choose a a flat fast one and get
- 1:43:20get one on the board. Almost.
- 1:43:22I think I think that like there'd be American only prize
- 1:43:26money and like contractual incentives that would get him to
- 1:43:29do it right. And so and then it's this time
- 1:43:33of year, you've only got a couple, you've got this or
- 1:43:35Chicago and Chicago would have had spent a lot of budget on
- 1:43:39mats and they already had a deep American field.
- 1:43:42So this one probably presents as a better opportunity to be
- 1:43:44competitive to domestically and sort of not get too dialed to a
- 1:43:50pace, but rather get a getting familiar with the event.
- 1:43:53Do you think we can we can allocate YouTube Diaries to
- 1:43:56Coffee Club? Interview with Joe Clacker
- 1:43:58there. Yeah, so check that out if
- 1:44:01you're you've got some time to kill post star episodes during
- 1:44:05the week ahead of the New York Marathon.
- 1:44:07That finally brings us to Double Trouble then.
- 1:44:09So I've received this Double Trouble in person yesterday,
- 1:44:14actually. So I was with Tom, Ted, John,
- 1:44:18Dan Wayne, who ironically is the guy who won the shoes from the
- 1:44:22Tokyo medal competition. And for full transparency, this
- 1:44:28first time I've ever met done so there was no fiddling of the
- 1:44:32results going on. He was making light of the fact
- 1:44:36that I'd bought him a pair of shoes and he was like
- 1:44:39sarcastically thanking me for it.
- 1:44:41But that was that was all good. So he throughout the day
- 1:44:47proceeded to pile on 5 or 6 double troubles to me.
- 1:44:50Like they just kept coming to him.
- 1:44:52He's like another double trouble, another double trouble.
- 1:44:55But the one that he went with initially was people who cool
- 1:44:59down for like 5K or more. It's it's all just junk mileage.
- 1:45:04It was funny because this then LED us to a debate as in what is
- 1:45:07the perfect ratio or perfect combo of warm up slash cool down
- 1:45:13distance? And when does it just become
- 1:45:16junk mileage? Because obviously they both
- 1:45:19serve a purpose as in getting you ready for the session and
- 1:45:22then like flushing the lactic or just lowering your heart rate
- 1:45:26back to a normal level for your cooldown, whatever it might be.
- 1:45:30Where does the crossover happen where you just purely start
- 1:45:33padding? And what do you think double
- 1:45:35Trouble in the first place? How much of that Jake
- 1:45:38Barracloughs 280K week is drunk mileage because he does that 5K
- 1:45:44world until then like I used to do.
- 1:45:48I think it's better time. Like I think 20 minutes for a
- 1:45:52warmth and cool down is like a nice number because yeah, I
- 1:45:55don't know, it's just a nice number.
- 1:45:56Like here personally, I do 15 now, but I think it's to do with
- 1:46:03the person as well if they have time.
- 1:46:06Like it's only an extra 5 minutes at the start and the
- 1:46:08end, but it does sort of make a difference.
- 1:46:11Like if I'm rushing to work, I'd also to have that 10 minutes to
- 1:46:14play around with. So I just do 15 minutes to 15
- 1:46:16minutes and I feel like I'm sort of in a nice sweet sprout this
- 1:46:20sweet spot with my mileage as well.
- 1:46:22Whereas like my body is like coping with the 120 a week.
- 1:46:26Whereas if I was to add another, like if I do, that's going to be
- 1:46:32another 4K on a right on a Tuesday, another UK on a
- 1:46:40Thursday and 2K on a Saturday. Like that's what it does add up
- 1:46:44and I feel like I don't really need it, but at the end of the
- 1:46:47day it's just like like it's not going to make a difference
- 1:46:51really well to in my head it doesn't.
- 1:46:53I'm probably totally wrong, but I wouldn't call junk mileage
- 1:46:57though. Like I think junk mileage is
- 1:47:01just a thing of the thing in the pastor.
- 1:47:03It was just the same cool trend back in the day.
- 1:47:07How about though, if you if you chop the cooldown to 2K, is that
- 1:47:11extra 2K or extra 10 minutes? Like what purpose does that
- 1:47:16serve? Like are you getting fitter off
- 1:47:18that or it like I think that's the the point he's looking at in
- 1:47:23terms of saying is junk mileage. Like what purpose does that
- 1:47:27extra 2K slash 10 minutes serve? I think if you look at that, are
- 1:47:32you, the worry is you could probably apply that to one Rep
- 1:47:38and then one like the last 10 minutes of a long run like you,
- 1:47:45you know, like I think just directionally, like adding a bit
- 1:47:49to someone's warm up and cool down might help just overall
- 1:47:53find a way of safely introducing more load over time.
- 1:47:57And so depending on where someone's at, that might be a
- 1:48:00good thing to do. And I think for me, if I only
- 1:48:03did say 5 minutes of a cooldown, I don't know if that'd be quite
- 1:48:06enough. I don't know if I'd feel quite
- 1:48:07right. So like I don't know if I'd pull
- 1:48:10up quite as well. But then if I think I did an
- 1:48:12hour after a workout, I think it would send me the other way.
- 1:48:15So the I, I tend to think like 1520 minutes is about feels
- 1:48:21about right for me. And if I'm in a rush, I'll do 10
- 1:48:24minutes. I could do 2 KS, that's normally
- 1:48:27what I do, But I don't know if you want to get in the habit of
- 1:48:31of cutting all of those because then you cut like you can turn
- 1:48:34your 40 minute run to a 30 minute run and then you could
- 1:48:37buy that by that extension. You then just because a lot of
- 1:48:41what I think we're trying to do is like progressive overload.
- 1:48:45So you're trying to just stay in a constant state of slight
- 1:48:47fatigue to sort of force some adaption.
- 1:48:50So if you're not trying to find ways to do a bit more than put
- 1:48:53your body under more load than what it's been before, then
- 1:48:56you're you're going to find it hard to get fitter.
- 1:48:59I think so. And whether or not that's
- 1:49:01intensity or three more minutes of running so.
- 1:49:06Yeah, that's why you're on the pod, didn't.
- 1:49:12I reckon when I get back, because the different runaway
- 1:49:16seems to be 4 or 4 down or like 20 minutes warm up, 20 minutes
- 1:49:21cooldown, I can definitely see the benefit of a 20 minute warm
- 1:49:25up over a 10 minute warm up because I don't know, sometimes
- 1:49:29after 10 minutes you're not properly warm or ready for a
- 1:49:32session. Like 20 minutes is really what I
- 1:49:35feel like I need. But then sometimes in the
- 1:49:39cooldown, especially after like a big session, say like a track
- 1:49:42Tuesday, by the end of that 20 minute jog, you're like, I'm
- 1:49:47starting to feel like pretty depleted, like starving and
- 1:49:50tired. So I reckon there is space there
- 1:49:53to be a little bit more sensible and be like 10 to 15 is maybe
- 1:49:58more suitable depending on the context.
- 1:50:00Yeah. And you might notice if the
- 1:50:02program in training PECS hasn't been updated, the default
- 1:50:04prescriptions 10 minutes. It's just for a lot of us, we'll
- 1:50:08do 20. And I will happily admit that
- 1:50:12during that marathon build, I would be making sure I was doing
- 1:50:174K to to get the mileage up. It's cheap, cheap mileage, Yeah.
- 1:50:23But now taking myself out of the environment a little bit and you
- 1:50:26can look at it a bit more reflectively and think, yeah,
- 1:50:29you are, you probably are chasing a little bit there.
- 1:50:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, you definitely think about all the cooldown
- 1:50:36numbers when you're know you're on for a good week.
- 1:50:38And the same could probably be applied to like an easy double
- 1:50:41day if you run, if you run like a 6030 or something, obviously
- 1:50:45that has serves a purpose. But then if you keep nudging it
- 1:50:50up and you end up doing a 74-C or whatever, then obviously it
- 1:50:54crosses that threshold somewhere and becomes a waste of time or
- 1:50:59you don't actually get the recovery in it.
- 1:51:03Well, yeah, everyone now posting your 20 minute cooldowns are
- 1:51:07going to feel terrible. Thanks to Dan.
- 1:51:11He did. He did drag us to a nice wine
- 1:51:14bar though, so thanks Dan. Does he like the shoes?
- 1:51:17He loves the shoes. Yeah, he's.
- 1:51:19He plans to wear them for Valencia.
- 1:51:20Oh. He's doing Valencia.
- 1:51:24Yeah, he's going over with Tom. He may have messaged me a couple
- 1:51:29of double troubles as well, which is about podcast hosts
- 1:51:34with kids not showing up to Sunday arvo drinks.
- 1:51:38Yeah, something, something to that effect, which I did, I did
- 1:51:41enjoy. Yeah, it was good, good fun.
- 1:51:44I reckon that was done, boys. We've made it two hours long
- 1:51:48again. Congratulations.
- 1:51:50We this is before we finish. We, it's, it's problematic in
- 1:51:57that there's so many results and so many news items cropping up
- 1:52:01throughout the week. I feel like I don't have time to
- 1:52:04like study them properly to do them justice when we talk about
- 1:52:08them. And then because there's so much
- 1:52:10to talk about, we don't have time to physically talk about
- 1:52:14it. And the episodes end up being
- 1:52:16two hours. And maybe we didn't go into as
- 1:52:18much depth as we perhaps could have on some of the topics, but
- 1:52:21we also don't want to miss anything out.
- 1:52:23Two hours is a bit of depth, surely?
- 1:52:26Of. Waffle surface level on on 9/19
- 1:52:30agenda items. Running generalists, not not
- 1:52:35journalists. You could, you could do it like
- 1:52:37a results show on just this week alone, yeah, but yeah.
- 1:52:43We'll we'll figure it out. Yeah.
- 1:52:46But we're pumping out the episodes.
- 1:52:48That's all the counts. We're still 10.
- 1:52:50No, the listeners are still 10. No, that's the main thing.
- 1:52:53So thanks. And before you switch off, if
- 1:52:55you haven't given us that five star review, that would be
- 1:52:58greatly appreciated. I don't know anything about what
- 1:53:02it does, but I'm led to believe that it does something.
- 1:53:04So there you go. All right.
- 1:53:08Thanks guys. That's it.
- 1:53:10Appreciate it. See you guys.
- 1:53:11See you. Good luck guys.
- 1:53:12See you. Cheers.
- 1:53:13Bye. Good luck.
- 1:53:13Bye. The.
