- 0:00As part of Ferrari Fridays, William Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace
- 0:04will be discussing all things Ferrari and interviewing people that live
- 0:07and breathe The Ferrari brand.
- 0:09Topics range from road cars to racing drivers to owners, as well
- 0:13as auctions, private sales and trends in the collector market.
- 0:20Never, never.
- 0:28As part of this week's Ferra Fridays, you've just tuned into a very special
- 0:33episode where host William Ross gets together with me, crew Chief Eric John
- 0:38Summers, the motoring historian and special guest David Ions from Motor
- 0:42Copia as we reunited at the 2026 Mecu Kissimmee Auction to do a play-by-play
- 0:48commentary on all the Ferrari in the Bachman collection, which led up
- 0:52to the sale of the Bianco special.
- 0:54So we invite you to sit back and enjoy the show.
- 0:57Welcome to the Fire Marketplace Grand Jury Motor Motor Story Motor Copia.
- 1:03We got the whole crew here.
- 1:04We're at Combs Kissy Sale and we are getting ready to start firing
- 1:08all at the bottom collection.
- 1:10But there's a teaser.
- 1:11There is a, what year is this tester?
- 1:14Uh, it is a 87 tester.
- 1:1587 tester.
- 1:17Rosa is gonna kind of start the fireworks here.
- 1:19They're trying to do commentary across the board, the whole collection,
- 1:24and then we'll get to the PTO.
- 1:26But here we go.
- 1:27Tester coming up.
- 1:29Alright, so John, you brought up a really good question.
- 1:31You just said flying mirror and I've heard the single spec and all that
- 1:35kind stuff, which, that makes sense.
- 1:36One mirror on one side of the car.
- 1:38What's the flying mirror?
- 1:39Is that the two mirrors?
- 1:40It's 85 86.
- 1:43First 87 when they went to the two mirrors.
- 1:46But it's just a single high mirror on the driver's side.
- 1:48That's it.
- 1:49That's modest speco.
- 1:51Every, you want pronounce it.
- 1:51He, so they call the flying mirror.
- 1:53For a long time those were poo-pooed.
- 1:55No one liked them.
- 1:56Right.
- 1:56Then all of a sudden everyone wanted 'em.
- 1:58'cause they were more rare than the standard ones.
- 2:02I love it when people realize how cool or interesting or rare something is that
- 2:07was once unloved the redheaded stepchild.
- 2:09Right now it's in the in flavor.
- 2:11It's, it keeps things interesting.
- 2:13The other thing with these test Ross, is the early ones had center
- 2:16lock wheels and then the late ones had traditional five luck.
- 2:20And that center lock thing was something that wasn't desirable at
- 2:23first, but subsequently has become something that people really look for.
- 2:27Oh yeah.
- 2:27Every Porsche owner today wants center lock wheels.
- 2:29Who wants to have five bolts to take off something?
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:33On that wheel when they driving down the skate.
- 2:36260 K for the tester.
- 2:39So 260 k Dave, that's well above your algorithmic average for these cars.
- 2:44So are you thinking there's a growth in the tester market right now?
- 2:47There's a pop and it's, it's, that's three 12,000 with fees.
- 2:51It's palpable because, and I, and I'd have to say we've been discussing this earlier,
- 2:55I think it's because of all the capital.
- 2:57That's floating around right now looking for a home, and people
- 2:59are going back and looking at what they wanted back in the day.
- 3:02Now they might have the money and now they're ready to roll and pull the
- 3:05trigger and, and get what they wanted on the, from the poster in the eighties.
- 3:08Black power already done at 1600 models as well.
- 3:12So it needs everything is what you're saying.
- 3:14It needs a full belt service.
- 3:15Yeah, yeah, of course.
- 3:17Hey David, what was the production numbers on Tester Rosas?
- 3:19Not TRS and m, just the tester itself.
- 3:22I think they were 7,100 and some odd.
- 3:24About 7,200.
- 3:25Okay.
- 3:25In all definitely a successful production model, if you can call
- 3:28that a production number for, for Ferrari, that's significant.
- 3:32But the cultural significance, I think maybe people are just going back and
- 3:35just saying, this is a great car.
- 3:36They're easy to drive, they're brilliant performers and I wanted one back when
- 3:41I was a kid and now I can get one.
- 3:43So Dave, when you go back to the office and you take a look at your test case
- 3:48of the Testa Rosa for motor copia, how are you gonna have to adjust?
- 3:51Just going to have to plug in the latest sales results and these rung the bell.
- 3:56This is amazing.
- 3:57This car went for almost for a hundred thousand more than the top
- 4:00estimate for that I had before based on sales data, based on the culture,
- 4:05based on the macro data for the economy and politics and all that.
- 4:09These cars that I think they've always had joint strong demand, but I think
- 4:13that people are, now, they've got money again, that, that tells me there's money.
- 4:17I don't know where the money's coming from or what country, but I'm, I'm,
- 4:21I'm wondering if there's international demand for these cars or if it's,
- 4:24if it's domestic and, and people are just saying it's time to have
- 4:27something fun that I've always wanted.
- 4:29When we look back in the catalog of the Mecu cars that sold, there
- 4:32were a couple other tester Rosas that also hammered above 200,000.
- 4:35Yeah.
- 4:36Which is probably a good sign.
- 4:37As we look across the Bachman collection, there's probably a high probability
- 4:41they're all gonna be 200,000 and above.
- 4:43I think that's reasonable coming from fastidious collectors that were in
- 4:47the Ferrari community, maybe that provenance, it'd be interesting
- 4:50to see if that provenance gives it an even further bump to the test.
- 4:53You're gonna have to look at the entire calendar year because here.
- 4:57In January at the beginning.
- 4:58So we need to see if it carries through the entire rest of the auction season.
- 5:02Exactly.
- 5:03It'll be interesting to see if this actually does carry through.
- 5:05It seems like there's a lot of exuberance, positivity.
- 5:08The stadium's almost full.
- 5:10This seems to me like we're back to, you know, record setting numbers again.
- 5:13It used to be that,
- 5:16sorry, pricing per for the year.
- 5:19Are we feeling like now maybe Mecu and Kissie are doing that?
- 5:23Yeah, I think, I think Mecu Kissimmee is displacing the traditional, uh,
- 5:27catalog type players and the other events like Scottsdale and Amelia.
- 5:31But it'd be interesting to see, again, does this carry
- 5:34through to the next two events?
- 5:36And if so, then we're gonna have a banger of a, of a Monterey barring any black swan
- 5:41situations, which are always out there.
- 5:43So do you think it's gonna be buy low, sell high, let's say this is
- 5:46the low, they're buying 'em now in January, taking 'em to car week and
- 5:50trying to make more money there.
- 5:52Is that a possible strategy?
- 5:54You know, there's always a possibility of arbitrage and going to other events.
- 5:58I, I would love to be a fly on the wall, uh, as to whoever takes this
- 6:01test OSA home to see whether or not it's a cherished keepsake, something
- 6:05they're going to enjoy and show.
- 6:07Or are they going to just be flipping the thing right there?
- 6:09There's never the VH one.
- 6:11Where are they now moment with these cars?
- 6:13It's a, it's a moment on the block and then they're gone and
- 6:16you may never see them again.
- 6:17Exactly.
- 6:18That's why I like to always copy down VIN numbers and, and chassis numbers,
- 6:22because I like to track them now.
- 6:25This 69 L 88 coup.
- 6:26I know the Roadsters and the 60 sevens are far more rare and and
- 6:30stuff like that, but 310,000 for an L 88, 1 of 116, that's a bargain.
- 6:36Well we are two Corvettes away from the Bachman collection, so
- 6:40we are just rounding out the end of what Muscle Car Alley here.
- 6:44Yeah, this is like the sixth Camaro Jenko Camaro we've seen and we, we
- 6:49just saw the proto like Jenko Camaro across the block for $1.7 million kind.
- 6:58Not me.
- 6:58Flat on my ass.
- 7:00Yeah, absolutely insane.
- 7:02Oh, the kos are having a record day today.
- 7:04This is 69, 4 50 already just when the calling started,
- 7:13but before Don Yanko was putting four 20 sevens in Camaros, there was a
- 7:18dealership in LA called Dana Chevrolet who were doing exactly the same thing.
- 7:23And it's always confusing to me why Yanko is the guy that's got
- 7:27all the reputation and why Danish Chevrolet are kind of forgotten.
- 7:31I think it's because Don Yanko is responsible for initiating the copal
- 7:36program at Chevrolet with their internal office in order to get these cars even
- 7:41built so that they could be updated and customized at the dealer level.
- 7:45And I think that might be the heritage.
- 7:47Plus he's an immensely successful SECA racer in the sixties.
- 7:50I'm wondering if it's that sort of, that glow that that's
- 7:53causing that bump in value.
- 7:54However, if you're looking for something like that as potent and but
- 7:58more rare, then one that came outta Dana or Berger in Detroit or any other
- 8:04dealer that was part of that program, like Nick, then you've got something
- 8:08even cooler as far as I'm concerned.
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:10With all that heritage, would a Berger or a Dana car make as much
- 8:14as we've seen these Yanks back?
- 8:16You know what, I've gotta take a look there.
- 8:18There'd be a lot fewer of them.
- 8:20You know what?
- 8:20That's a possibility.
- 8:21Just due to rarity.
- 8:23They were all kind of developed the same way.
- 8:25And I think Dick.
- 8:27Had something to do with them early on.
- 8:29There's a sort of a commonality and then a little bit of a rarity differentiator.
- 8:33So it'd be interesting to see how those cars perform.
- 8:36So for the European enthusiast that know Yanko, the man, what does COPO stand for?
- 8:41Oh, um, corporate Office for production order.
- 8:44It's like a arcane nerd level, uh, fleet ordering system that Chevrolet used.
- 8:49Okay.
- 8:49Was it taxis?
- 8:50Police cars, emergency vehicles would've all been ordered through a
- 8:54fleet ordering system to streamline the process and then maximize efficiency.
- 8:59But Vince Piggins was the brains behind the, the dominance of Hudson,
- 9:03uh, in NASCAR in the early fifties.
- 9:06And he was Chevy's product promotion and an engineer that really worked
- 9:10the Copo program with don y to make it all happen and put Chevy back on top.
- 9:15They were taking a beating in relation to the Hemi cars that Chrysler was building.
- 9:20They were building race cars before this, you know, that you couldn't
- 9:23really buy them for the street, but what was considered street
- 9:26car like the 60 68 Hemi Dart.
- 9:29Sorry, that's not a street car.
- 9:30Right.
- 9:30They even came with disclaimer cards all over them saying, but you know,
- 9:34the idea was make a streetable car that street legal, that Chevrolet
- 9:38could kick out the door and then they could be back in the lime lights.
- 9:41So, well gentlemen, we are one car away from the beginning of the Bachman
- 9:45collection, which is kicking off with what looks like a his and hers Alfa Romeo eight
- 9:50C combination, both a spider and a cupe.
- 9:53So really curious to see what those hammer for.
- 9:56But then we will dive deep for what, 44 more cars after that.
- 10:00Love it.
- 10:01World of Ferrari.
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:02This is, this is like, uh, being a kid in the candy store.
- 10:09I remember being a kid and you couldn't give a split window coop away, but now
- 10:13people are recognizing how cool they were.
- 10:16How one year only, and I will say the stands are filling in.
- 10:20When we got here earlier, it was a little bit thinner, but we are
- 10:23kind of at high tide at the moment.
- 10:25It's exciting, you know, it's, it.
- 10:26It also shows how much interest there is in this market.
- 10:30It's a show, it's a, uh, an auction.
- 10:33It's an experience.
- 10:35It certainly is an experience just walking around outside with
- 10:39the Floridian crowds, my words.
- 10:42You see some sight, not least, that dark wood Miss America eight boat.
- 10:50Yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 10:51Miller V 16.
- 10:52Can you imagine building a boat?
- 10:54A beautiful woodhall, a speedboat back then and two custom built
- 10:59two order V 16 Miller Engines.
- 11:02I mean, it's, it's music when it runs, it is peak hot rod.
- 11:06Absolutely.
- 11:07Garwood made his money inventing the hydraulic press, and the reason he
- 11:14made a lot of money was coal wagons didn't have a hydraulic press.
- 11:18You just have to shut.
- 11:19I did not know that.
- 11:21And what a industrial leap, imagine that just to reduce the workload required.
- 11:27To move that goal.
- 11:29It's amazing.
- 11:30But that's seeing an opportunity and making it work
- 11:32and then reaping the spoils.
- 11:34Alright.
- 11:35We have an interesting break in the flow of cars at the moment as we transition
- 11:40over to the Bachman collection.
- 11:41They've been one after the other for hours now.
- 11:44Sort of like, where are the cars?
- 11:46Are they gonna do a special presentation?
- 11:49Oh, we're doing a little bit of Automobilia signed photograph of Mario
- 11:53Andretti winning the 12 hours of Seaburn.
- 11:56Oh, that's cool.
- 11:58There's something for everybody here.
- 12:00It's like the last Foo Fighters concert I was at.
- 12:02You go through waves and then you reach a crescendo near the end and
- 12:05then it goes two levels higher.
- 12:08So it'll be interesting to see how the day progresses.
- 12:10That's Bill Warner up there on stage.
- 12:11Oh, that's, I think, I think you're right.
- 12:13I think that's really cool,
- 12:16bill.
- 12:46Right?
- 12:46That's a paradigm shift is what it was.
- 12:48And, and, and, and Emelia Island's been considered the
- 12:52Pebble Beach of the East Coast.
- 12:53Right?
- 12:53Yeah.
- 12:54And I've, I've had the distinct privilege of meeting Bill several times.
- 12:58I've interviewed him on the show before.
- 13:00He's a wealth of information.
- 13:02He's always a yes.
- 13:03When you wanna, Hey Bill, can you tell me another story about this
- 13:06or what was it like doing that?
- 13:07He's, he's a fascinating gentleman and he's got a couple books out too.
- 13:11He's an author.
- 13:12I mean, he's a, a noted author, great on, so great opportunity to look him up.
- 13:16I, I think a bunch of his books are on Amazon.
- 13:18And not only that, the proceeds of the books go to the Spina Bifida Foundation
- 13:23in Jacksonville, which he's a big part of.
- 13:26So, you know, great cause.
- 13:27Give back, especially if you want to add a coffee table book
- 13:30to your collection at home.
- 13:33Everything.
- 13:33One day Saturday talking about high end stuff.
- 13:38By the end of the conversation we were talking about.
- 13:44Yep.
- 13:46He's one of the reasons why, um, I, I'm building out my road and
- 13:50track collection because, uh, of his coverage and his photography, I can't
- 13:54believe 60 grand for a photograph.
- 13:59From your vantage point, Dave, can you see the cars or are we
- 14:02still dealing with memorabilia?
- 14:04We we're still dealing memorabilia.
- 14:06Sign now and then the cars.
- 14:13It's a great time window though to, to shift direction slightly and bring
- 14:18these great collectibles out too.
- 14:20But what do people do with these kind of collectibles guys?
- 14:23What do they actually do?
- 14:23Do you just put 'em up in your garage?
- 14:26Do you have them as an investment?
- 14:28Like they're, they're a peculiar thing to me.
- 14:31I think there's a whole market for, what are they, they call automobilia.
- 14:35But to your point, you have to have the space to be able to use it for decoration.
- 14:39Because if you've ever seen, let's say a traffic signal in person,
- 14:42they look so small when you're in the car, they're massive.
- 14:46The reality.
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:46Seen, right?
- 14:47And so these dealership signs are absolutely just huge.
- 14:52They take up a ton of space.
- 14:53So you have to have the right garage, warehouse, airport hanger, or
- 14:57whatever it is to be able to put it.
- 14:59Now granted that's the premise behind Garage Style Magazine is how can you
- 15:03take this sort of stuff and then decorate your garage and make it your garage?
- 15:07Mahal, let's just call it that.
- 15:09So, but I think there's a market for it.
- 15:11I sometimes, I wish I could have this kind of stuff.
- 15:14It's almost more about interior design, correct.
- 15:16Than Automobility, isn't it?
- 15:18Now they can be a little problematic.
- 15:20Dealers like, uh, brand signs like this, I know BMW, they actually
- 15:25litigated against a car dealer.
- 15:27That wasn't a BMW dealer, but had a illuminated BMW dealer sign.
- 15:32This is about 20 2004 and it was quite an interesting case, but I think
- 15:38if it's for personal use, I don't think anybody can quibble with that.
- 15:41Yeah, I mean, if we put it into perspective, I mean, look at those
- 15:43gentlemen that are standing by the Buick Neon dealership sign over there.
- 15:47I mean, that, that guy's probably, what, six foot tall?
- 15:49He comes up between the C and the K. That's a big sign.
- 15:53You need a real building to put that on.
- 15:55Oh yeah.
- 16:00It's a Ferrari sign.
- 16:0128,000. The hammer.
- 16:03Oh, they turned the lights off.
- 16:05Okay.
- 16:05Changing Focus Bugman collection coming up.
- 16:07Oh, we're gonna watch a movie.
- 16:08Okay.
- 16:09Gosh, I like this dramatic buildup, ladies.
- 16:12And
- 16:29here we go.
- 16:30All cars in the Bachman collection.
- 16:32No reserve.
- 16:34Never seen do that before where they're like, dim the light to do the intro.
- 16:38This is interesting.
- 16:39We've got two out from air, eight Cs here, a yellow one and a red one.
- 16:43It's been interesting to me all the way through the event, how they've stacked
- 16:48the same cars alongside each other so you can, as a potential buyer, make
- 16:53comparison between them or buy the pair.
- 16:57I like it.
- 16:58You've got the, uh, got the convertible and the coop.
- 17:03Why not get both?
- 17:05I mean, we, I mean, we joked about these cars.
- 17:08Why are they here?
- 17:08This doesn't make sense.
- 17:10And, and you know, the consensus is well underneath the skin.
- 17:13They're really Ferrari, so it, it, it makes total sense that
- 17:15they're here in the collection.
- 17:17I mean, they're more modern cars too.
- 17:19Probably some of the, the leader acquisitions that Phil and Martha made,
- 17:22but, you know, they're a handsome car.
- 17:24I personally like 'em in a slightly darker tone.
- 17:27A blue or a dark gray or black, especially, I think it wears
- 17:30black really, really well.
- 17:31But you know, for the discerning buyer, yellow is interesting cost.
- 17:36Who was the feeling of the tub?
- 17:37What would they like to draw?
- 17:38I would love to drive one.
- 17:39I think they'd probably be just amazing considering what they're, how they're
- 17:43powered and how they're engineered.
- 17:45For my money though, I feel as though this is in the same realm as the Maserati
- 17:51Cupe, the Ferrari powered Maserati.
- 17:53But also if you draw parallel to BMW, this is like the Z eight and for my
- 17:58money, I actually want the four C, which is a little bit more like, you know, Z
- 18:02four territory than Z eight territory.
- 18:04You know what I mean?
- 18:05There's some, there's a bit of a mystique around these eight Cs that actually
- 18:09for me is a little bit off putting.
- 18:11On the other hand, I think it represents the, the precise moment when, as I
- 18:16understand the corporate structure, FCA started really celebrating its
- 18:20heritage and branching out to cars like the eight C, bringing them to life,
- 18:24the four C, and then branching out to cars that are more production oriented.
- 18:45Yeah, just like the thirties,
- 18:54again, celebrating heritage, just like the eight c uh, cars of the thirties.
- 19:03Don't you think the coop is worth more than the convertible?
- 19:07I would think the convertible, because it's, uh, there were
- 19:09less built, fewer built.
- 19:11I mean, although I think the red is a much more appealing
- 19:14color than the yellow for me.
- 19:15Oh, it looks so right on that car, on that coop.
- 19:20The red was a far more common color.
- 19:22When I think of an Alpha eight c, I think of it in red.
- 19:28I think Eric, to your point about comparing with the four C, to me
- 19:32the four C is uh, something like a Porsche Boxster, whereas this is
- 19:37far more like a Ferrari five 50.
- 19:39This is a grand tour, front engine, grand tour, not a mid engine sports car.
- 19:52So the open air premium holds in Florida
- 19:58four.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:0094 Ferrari five 12 tr So five 12 TR and five 12 M. What is
- 20:08the difference between them?
- 20:09David, do you know?
- 20:12This is funny.
- 20:13I, I used to have this on the top of my head, but I, William probably
- 20:16knows what the difference between the TR and the m Uh, well, big day
- 20:21front headlights, just more fines.
- 20:23Got a little more power.
- 20:25Uh, it's a little wider and it's kind of beefed it up for the last,
- 20:30the last go go around for it.
- 20:34So it looks, I'm a lover hate because it's just some people
- 20:38don't like those open headlights.
- 20:43I'm in that camp.
- 20:43I prefer the, the, uh, TR five 12 m it sort of echoes the, the, uh,
- 20:483 48 a little bit too for a little family resemblance, doesn't it?
- 20:52Yeah.
- 20:53Ley is the finally evolution of that fact 12 line that started way back in the
- 20:58early seventies with the 3 6 5 and moved through the Berlin netter boxer cars.
- 21:03And then finally we had these five twelves at, at, at the end.
- 21:06And my understanding is that these of the group were probably the
- 21:10best to drive Fabulous heritage.
- 21:12Yeah, that's what I've heard.
- 21:17As I understand, easy to use, easy to drive, good visibility,
- 21:21Mo at least out the front and the sides, and lots of performance.
- 21:27I think rarer than the tester Ross as well.
- 21:30That's right.
- 21:31That is such a clean design and when you compare it to the 80 fours, the very
- 21:36first ones, it's so much more refined.
- 21:39But you don't lose the streaks.
- 21:41The straights are the most important part and they're very
- 21:44distinctive in in farina design.
- 21:47In that Pininfarina designs tend to be a couple of simple lines in contrast
- 21:52to uh, for example, vle tend to do very complicated, often quite challenging
- 21:59shapes or zagato less so, but they have a similar kind of styling aesthetic.
- 22:04Whereas Pininfarina a few simple clean lines, super elegant.
- 22:09That's right.
- 22:10And the side strikes, I mean people kind of found them controversial, but I
- 22:15mean they were aerodynamic solution to venting the cool air into the radiators.
- 22:20I think that's a little bit the same as the Cadillacs 59 Cadillac spins with
- 22:25the stability stabilizing at speed.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:30And actually the Chrysler 300 F in 1960, they set a bunch of speed records
- 22:34at Bonneville with it and the fans did enhance lateral stability Well and
- 22:39need did on ejaculate type as well.
- 22:41Yes.
- 22:41So maybe there is something to it That's right.
- 22:45More than double that Testa Rosser and that Testa Rosser did over its estimate.
- 22:50I mean this is remarkable.
- 22:53Wow.
- 22:57Alright, here's one of the Fab five.
- 22:59We had a 2 88 GTO up on the block with a whopping 2000 kilometers.
- 23:06What's that in Miles?
- 23:07Dave?
- 23:07You're Canadian.
- 23:08Yeah, I think that's 1600 or 50.
- 23:10Yep, that's right.
- 23:11Slightly used just ever so slightly.
- 23:15But it, it is in this car significant because it's the first of Ferrari drill
- 23:21halo cars that have led down the road to.
- 23:27Ferrari.
- 23:27This is the first of those real supercars and although it looks like
- 23:32a 3 0 8 with extra spotlights and a body kit on it, in fact there was
- 23:37a lot more development work done.
- 23:38Was there not?
- 23:39There was.
- 23:40And more importantly, this is a longitudinal orientation for the
- 23:44motor, which is a step away from some of the other designs that they've
- 23:47used with the transverse engines.
- 23:49But it also is the door that opened for the F 40.
- 23:53'cause when you re-skin a 2 88, that's what you end up with is
- 23:56basically a wide body, almost LAMA prototype is where the F 40 lands.
- 24:05Oh wow.
- 24:077 million.
- 24:09We're already at 7 million seconds into the bidding.
- 24:13What have these been selling for four to six range?
- 24:16We're double that.
- 24:17Yeah, I mean, again, one owner 27 2000 kilometers.
- 24:21I mean, come on.
- 24:22And that's the power of a single owner.
- 24:24Long-term ownership provenance.
- 24:37You love the air horn, don't you?
- 24:39Got a soccer game?
- 24:42Anybody have a cowbell?
- 24:44You know, like they using scheme
- 24:4775.
- 24:50What we might be witnessing here is somewhat of a paradigm
- 24:53shift in terms of what bidders, qualified bidders are willing to
- 24:56commit and are willing to step up.
- 24:59You know, it's, it's kind of setting new marks for this year.
- 25:01The uncertainty in the economy at the moment.
- 25:04It's astonishing to me that, that we should be seeing a record price like this.
- 25:10And it's uncertainty for some and not for all.
- 25:13There's a, we're we're seeing a stratification right here, right
- 25:17here is physical manifestation of it.
- 25:20You, you were saying you thought the one owner thing was
- 25:23very important with this car.
- 25:24That's right.
- 25:25Do you, is it, it's one owner and the backman provenance, because that's gonna
- 25:30mean that your GTO, your two aa GTO always stands out from anybody else's.
- 25:35Yeah, there could be, uh, there could be differences.
- 25:38Absolutely.
- 25:38And then go also depending on mileage condition, but I think a
- 25:42single owner grouping, there you go.
- 25:458 million
- 25:48a car that saved Ferrari.
- 25:51Eric, the 3 0 8, you keep saying that they, this is the car that saved Ferrari.
- 25:55Why?
- 25:55Why was that?
- 25:56Because it's the most mass produced Ferrari ever.
- 25:59And it came at a time where Ferrari was in transition from, you know,
- 26:03the cars of the sixties and the, you know, the 360 fives and the five
- 26:06twelves and all these other things.
- 26:08They were even being produced in the early seventies, but they weren't selling well.
- 26:12Right?
- 26:12You had the Dino 2 46 that didn't really sell that well.
- 26:16You had a lot of, were not doing well, and the economy wasn't great in the
- 26:20seventies, and you had, you know, post-war Vietnam, a lot of things.
- 26:23Now granted, this car gained a ton of popularity thanks to the hit
- 26:27show with Tom Selleck Magnum pi.
- 26:29But at the end, it forced fer, the 3 0 8 forced Ferrari to go into mass
- 26:34production, to not only fuel the, the racing program through the seventies,
- 26:38but to keep the company afloat.
- 26:40So, William, how many three oh eights did they build in?
- 26:42It's like seven, eight year time span.
- 26:46You use that tens and tens of thousands of them.
- 26:4830 to 40,000.
- 26:49It's a lot.
- 26:51Something like that.
- 26:52And then that carries on into the three 20 eights, you know, a couple years later.
- 26:55So long life and a long purpose, but it's a very popular car.
- 26:59Maybe not the poster on the wall car like the tester is, but it's
- 27:04the cheap version of the car you couldn't really get at that time.
- 27:08The body lines are supremely Yeah, they're beautiful and, and that, you
- 27:12know what, the three liter VA mid engine, this looks like the car that
- 27:18the Dino could have been earlier on.
- 27:20Yes.
- 27:21Well it, the Dino's, the precursor to it, right?
- 27:23Absolutely.
- 27:25I think the 3 0 8 appeared as at the, as early as 1969.
- 27:29I think the shape was penned very, very early, long before production.
- 27:34And of course the early cars were fiberglass or racino
- 27:38is the Italian term for it.
- 27:40And absurdly the plastic fantastics are worth more than the steel ones.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:44Because the rarity, well also, I mean you consider the plastic
- 27:48ones or the fiberglass ones.
- 27:50Carbon Kevlar, whatever they were using back then.
- 27:52They're the lightweights.
- 27:54Right.
- 27:54Versus the steel cars are heavier.
- 27:56So if you're going for performance and you want to eek out as much as you
- 27:59can, you want the lightweight 3 0 8.
- 28:02Now granted the early cars are carbureted versus the four valve
- 28:06head later fuel injected cars, which would make more power.
- 28:09So in the end, is it a wash powered away ratio?
- 28:11Probably yes.
- 28:12Fully.
- 28:13Because my understanding is, is that the QV head and the 3.2 only came in
- 28:17to offset the performance loss that was as a result of emissions in the 3 28.
- 28:23Yes, absolutely.
- 28:23And I got a chance to actually autocross the 3 28 again to drive it as well.
- 28:28And I've never been in a V eight that is so happy to live Its life at the top
- 28:33end of PM Band is absolutely brilliant.
- 28:35Engine's exciting.
- 28:37It must been for autocross because they feel like little sports cars.
- 28:40Yeah.
- 28:40Waits at the back a hundred percent.
- 28:43The Starling heritage that goes with TV production crew wanted to use a Porsche 9
- 28:482 8, but Porsche refused to cut the roof off, so they went to Ferrari instead.
- 28:54And the rest history, I mean, Tom Selleck barely fit in the 3 0 8.
- 28:57I can't imagine him fitting in a 9 28.
- 29:03So now we have a 365 John.
- 29:04So we were talking about this yesterday.
- 29:06In preparation, when you look at it from afar and you don't know
- 29:09any better, you go, oh, that's just another Berlin out of boxer.
- 29:12But it's not a five 12 bb, it's the precursor, right?
- 29:16Yes, absolutely.
- 29:17And, and the 3 6 5 designation is the cubic capacity of
- 29:23each one of the 12 cylinders.
- 29:26This is the gray market delight of, uh, doctors, lawyers, uh, successful
- 29:30dental, uh, practitioners, academics, anybody that had a sporting event and,
- 29:37and available capital, and they weren't afraid to wait for it to be federalized.
- 29:41And again, this is the car that gave way to something like the 2 88 GTO because
- 29:46you can see the body lines in its design.
- 29:49Now, there's a couple other cars that share similar design language.
- 29:52We could talk about the 2 37 and the launch of Beta Monte
- 29:56Carlo and things like that.
- 29:57They're very, very similar, even though those are, I think they're
- 29:59Tony Designs, but you see that wedgie seventies Italian, they're all kind
- 30:05of going in the same direction.
- 30:07But what this car was the genesis of is pretty incredible.
- 30:12This was space age, I mean, yeah.
- 30:15And I think if you speak to Ferrari purists, they, although the later
- 30:20BBS may have had more power, these early ones were so light and, and
- 30:25delicate to drive without the safety or emission stuff that came through
- 30:29the seventies and into the eighties.
- 30:31Well, it's funny you that, because I had the opportunity a couple years back
- 30:35to interview John Warner iv, and one of his daily drivers was a five 12 bb.
- 30:40And I asked about it, you know, during a meetup one time.
- 30:43I said, John, what is it like to drive a Berlin Netta box star?
- 30:45And he's like, it's an absolute widow maker in an absolute nightmare
- 30:48in some respects, to drive.
- 30:49They're very twitchy, they're very unpredictable, you know, and he's
- 30:53owned all sorts of crazy cars, Paneras and all sorts of things.
- 30:56And, but he was like, the five 12 is one of those cars that
- 30:58puts the hair on your chest.
- 30:59Well, isn't there something weird about the engine bin on top of the Transaxle?
- 31:03So the handling somewhat compromised because of the height of the engine.
- 31:08You know the thing about the, the early the, the Berlin in Boxer, I
- 31:11mean all flavor, all the iterations.
- 31:14It wasn't so long ago those were 130 5K car.
- 31:17Now here is the car that was on my bedroom wall as a kid.
- 31:23This for me is still a gorgeous car.
- 31:26It's an ultimate supercar.
- 31:28It's beautiful from every, you're in your forties, Eric.
- 31:30That's why if you were older than that, you wouldn't feel
- 31:33like that about the F 40.
- 31:35But it is the up and coming car, isn't it The F 40?
- 31:40But I don't understand people that like the F 50.
- 31:42I'm just gonna come out and say it right now.
- 31:45Seconds into the bidding.
- 31:46We're at 7,000 R 7 million.
- 31:48Excuse me.
- 31:48Add three zeros.
- 31:52Six five.
- 31:56Oh sorry, six five.
- 31:57My understanding was these were two or $3 million cars.
- 32:00We are just a six and a half.
- 32:02Is this this one ownership thing?
- 32:05Is it the low mileage thing or, or are we just seeing, I mean 456 documented miles.
- 32:11Oh, the Buckman took factory delivery in 1992.
- 32:15I don't think there's, I don't think there's that forties in the Ferrari
- 32:17museum that have less miles than this.
- 32:22On the one hand, that's great.
- 32:23And on the other other hand, that's a sad thing.
- 32:26It needs everything.
- 32:27That's, I keep saying, but at the same time, I'm glad that there's folk
- 32:30like Phil Backman preserving cars.
- 32:32'cause there's too folk like me who just drive the kaho and that one out.
- 32:37Yeah, but you've had a good time in the process and you reduced the cost per mile.
- 32:44You have reduced the cost per mile.
- 32:45Yes.
- 32:46Let's not forget that.
- 32:48You know what I would give for a black F 40?
- 32:51I'm just gonna say that right now.
- 32:54Well, there is that meat colored one isn't there?
- 32:57Yeah, though, like the, which.
- 32:59Really makes you stand out there.
- 33:00If you own that min color, 40, everyone knows it's your car.
- 33:04There was one recently reaped done.
- 33:06Or repainted.
- 33:07Or rehabbed.
- 33:08It's a, it is a light blue like metallic.
- 33:12It is gorgeous in that color.
- 33:17That has to be a market setting record throughout that.
- 33:23Alright, so very early 3 0 8 GP here with fiberglass bodies.
- 33:30You guys the last for us one, right?
- 33:32One of the last, yeah.
- 33:35Now this 3G TB is a razina, is that correct?
- 33:38A fiberglas body?
- 33:39Yeah.
- 33:40It a is a only 9,931 miles.
- 33:44The eighth example produced, the thing that people always say about
- 33:47this is they need a belt service either every three years or 30,000
- 33:51miles or whatever it is, and how that's a bit of a pain, the bottom.
- 33:55But of course the car was designed to have the engine lifted out
- 33:59and have those belts done.
- 34:01So it's not even that challenging.
- 34:03That's my understanding.
- 34:08So the beginning of the line here, fiberglass body
- 34:18clean, GTB body
- 34:23see, but I'm sort of, of the opinion that if you offered
- 34:26me a 3 0 8, I would take it.
- 34:29Oh yeah.
- 34:29I would probably be happier if it was the one that had a
- 34:32hundred thousand miles on it.
- 34:34Because I knew it was driven.
- 34:35I knew it was loved and it had to be maintained in order to get there.
- 34:38No, you don't think so?
- 34:41Yes.
- 34:41For me, the, the living breathing car is far more appealing than the garage queen.
- 34:47Low mileage special.
- 34:48But you know, this is what Phil Backman used to say his there when people used
- 34:51to say to him, drive the cars dude.
- 34:53He would say, you enjoy the cars your way and I'll enjoy them my way.
- 34:59The fees and stuff.
- 35:01I, I was outside and some people were chatting and like one older gentleman
- 35:05asked this younger gentleman, they was probably around our age, but
- 35:08the older gentleman's probably in the seventies, he goes, what do
- 35:10you think the total thing worth?
- 35:11And the guy was like, oh, I don't know, probably around 50 million.
- 35:14And I turned around and said, you're way off.
- 35:17Five of the cars total will go for that.
- 35:19Yeah, it should break a hundred million total.
- 35:23At least get close.
- 35:25Well we can add it up afterwards.
- 35:27Find out roughly taking a ballpark is say 12% total in fees.
- 35:32You know, maybe they negotiate a little better rate stuff.
- 35:34Even just doing that, we get, you know, let's still impressive.
- 35:37Yeah.
- 35:38So now we got another Testa Rosa for your books here.
- 35:41This is way out of the ballpark, isn't it, Dave?
- 35:44Totally, totally.
- 35:46Why are we reach 257 miles?
- 35:51257 miles.
- 35:53There you go.
- 35:54Interesting aside, Darrell Greenmeyer, the late ne Darrell Greenmeyer, former
- 35:59SR 71 pilot holds the, uh, bought this car new, he holds the, uh, piston
- 36:05powered world record that has yet to be unbroken since it's 19 69, 483
- 36:11miles an hour in a Grum and Bearcat.
- 36:13Wow.
- 36:14So this was his car new.
- 36:15So Dave, when you go back and do your analysis on the Testa Rosas, does this car
- 36:19suddenly become an outlier at $600,000?
- 36:23Absolutely.
- 36:24Absolutely.
- 36:25So it's almost off the table is, is it the provenance?
- 36:26I mean, is it, you know, not only original owner provenance, but also
- 36:31Bachman provenance, low mileage.
- 36:34It's just ticking all the boxes.
- 36:36But Testa roses are, are entering a new paradigm right now.
- 36:41Yes.
- 36:416 25. It wasn't that long ago at Monterey.
- 36:45I, I sat in a black car that was estimated to make 90 grand and thought,
- 36:50oh, I might even be able to get there.
- 36:53But six 50, I don't think I can get there.
- 36:57It'll remain to be seen at the next round of auctions, uh, January, March.
- 37:02And then Monterey, have we entered a new era for these cars or,
- 37:06or, uh, and a new expectation?
- 37:09Or is it just simply a function of a perfect alignment of the planet's money,
- 37:14supply, exuberance, people appreciating these cars, and also the presentation
- 37:19of them as one single collection?
- 37:22I love the, uh, plexi nose on this Daytona that we've got on the block at the moment.
- 37:28What's the premium?
- 37:29Is there a significant premium for cars with the plexi nose?
- 37:32I think it's rarity and early production status.
- 37:35There was a time they weren't as much in vogue as they are now.
- 37:39If you're collecting Ferrari's and you like the Daytona, then an early
- 37:44one should be in your collection.
- 37:46Again, it's money chasing rarity and first of the line status.
- 37:51I mean, I'm gonna be the detractor here.
- 37:53I've said it before on our drive through news program when these cars just
- 37:57happen to come up every now and again.
- 37:59I am not a fan of the shape of these cars.
- 38:02I mean, I get the whole Miami Vice thing.
- 38:05You know, they did use these on Miami Vice in the early
- 38:07seasons versus Tesla Rosa later.
- 38:08But I just, I don't get it.
- 38:11Well, a story about Miami Vice was the original.
- 38:14The, the Daytona in Miami Vice was a replica.
- 38:18It was a Corvette on a replica chassis.
- 38:20The Ferrari himself was a fan of the show, contacted the production company and said,
- 38:25I will give you a cup the next season.
- 38:28As long as that black replica meets a horrible end, what it does, it burns up.
- 38:33Sonny Crockett fakes his own death in when episode.
- 38:36She's the car and it burns, hence the white tester.
- 38:40Also to the Daytona.
- 38:42It was not intended as a race car, and yet I think it earned second.
- 38:45And the 24 hours of Daytona at 19 79, 6 25.
- 38:49That Daytona just paid, what, five 50 I think or something?
- 38:53I've got 6 25.
- 38:54Oh, was this, so we've, uh, 79 3 0 8 on the block now.
- 38:59So super rare color here.
- 39:01Never even seen this color on a Ferrari before.
- 39:04How much is that gonna add to value or to, to interest to a 3 0 8 fan like me?
- 39:12Dollar for dollar?
- 39:13I would love to have one that's in, not in Rosso.
- 39:16What you're not able to see when you're watching this on television
- 39:21is the actual color of the car.
- 39:23This is a very, very gray car with a green undertone, but on television
- 39:28it presents itself as very green.
- 39:30Now there is a green color for three oh eights, which is really, really nice.
- 39:35And there was actually, if you use a Magna Pi reference, there was an episode
- 39:38where they actually featured a green at 3 0 8 on there that Carol Burnett drove.
- 39:43And the story goes that Tom Selleck was in the shop and they brought the
- 39:47green around all this kind of thing.
- 39:49This is not that color.
- 39:50This is a gray, uh, that you're seeing here.
- 39:55You know what, you'd have to show me a bad color on the 3 0 8.
- 39:58I'm sorry.
- 39:59I just think that that color they wear pretty much every color.
- 40:02Well, that is just gorgeous and I love it's that it's apparently it's the first
- 40:063 0 8 produced in that color combination.
- 40:12So isn't this a this, we, we now have a, uh, five 50 barta
- 40:17crossing, uh, crossing the block.
- 40:19Isn't this a case of, uh, you give the punters less and charge 'em more?
- 40:23You cut the roof off and yeah, charge 'em more money for it.
- 40:26That's the Porsche formula, right?
- 40:28Take something away and charge more for it.
- 40:30I love some 5 55 75.
- 40:33Not a fan of the convertible.
- 40:35And I'm gonna say it on.
- 40:36Probably say it again during this broadcast, I don't like yellow.
- 40:42It's all in the eye of the beholder.
- 40:44Eric.
- 40:44I don't think the five 50 wears yellow.
- 40:46Well that, that's my point.
- 40:48Black is Corvettes wear yellow excellently.
- 40:50The nine 11 looks.
- 40:51That's really good.
- 40:52Yellowness.
- 40:53That's Kyle light yellow.
- 40:53Yeah.
- 40:54This body shape does not lend itself well to yellow.
- 40:57Now sadly, it doesn't roll off the tongue.
- 40:59Like say uh, red Barta from uh, from Rush.
- 41:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:03I wonder what Neil Pert would've done, but you know what?
- 41:06I'll take a yellow Ferrari any day.
- 41:08I don't care.
- 41:11We're at 1.1 already for five 50.
- 41:15These look really good in that gun metal gr.
- 41:19They do a lot of gun metal gray in that car and the dark blue
- 41:22that the four five sixes came in is really, really nice as well.
- 41:29And I worked at EMC in the.com boom.
- 41:31My boss was rookie of the year and with her bonus, just her bonus, she
- 41:37bought a new five 50 oh and sat it in the garage one time at her house.
- 41:42You know, I love the observance of those days.
- 41:45As a bystander I was in banking and financial services and just hearing about
- 41:49the stories like that and then getting the inside baseball of the tech, uh,
- 41:53Silicon Valley scene from you, John.
- 41:56That's fun.
- 41:58How many other grand tours did we cut the roof off of Ferrari you think of?
- 42:03No, design wise, not Ferrari in general, but like we talked about
- 42:06before, you wouldn't cut the roof off on 9 28 because this is the sort of
- 42:09classic card that the five 50 is in.
- 42:11So can we think of any other, maybe some Astons where we cut the roof off?
- 42:16Thanks.
- 42:16Js Jaguars, yes.
- 42:18There's not many in that class where you take a grand tour and make 'em a cabrio.
- 42:22Le you're making me think of that traditional British term that the
- 42:27Drop Drophead coop or drophead co a, that it's almost that kind of, as
- 42:33opposed to a true Roadster drophead.
- 42:37Has like the folding roof so it can be a little more formal, right?
- 42:40So,
- 42:53alright, here we go.
- 42:53Another halo car.
- 42:54So why want that vibe?
- 42:56I teach a class at a prominent west coast university each year and I had a student
- 43:02a couple of years ago pull one of these cars up in a presentation he was doing as
- 43:08an illustration of design that's 20 years old that has moved onward and and upward.
- 43:15Now for me, I was really not sure about these enzos when they first came out.
- 43:19As the years have gone by, I've really begun to appreciate how they represent
- 43:24what Ferrari was doing in Formula One.
- 43:26At the time, the high nose, like the anhe nose that was on
- 43:29contemporary Formula one cars.
- 43:31But my question for you guys is how has the Enzo shape stood up over the decades?
- 43:37I don't think it's aged well, John, it looks very early two thousands.
- 43:42It is to your point, mimicking the formula one cars of that era and it's
- 43:46just sort of stuck in time versus a car like let's say the Audi R eight or the
- 43:51third Gen RX seven or other more fluid designs, you can't put a date on them.
- 43:56This car, in my opinion, is very dated, especially when you compare
- 44:00it to things like the LA Ferrari and things that came after it.
- 44:03But it is a step away if you keep it in the same lineage as the F 40
- 44:07and the F 50 and the cars before it.
- 44:09It's very different, right?
- 44:10It's very much more the Batmobile.
- 44:13There goes
- 44:15yeah, definitely those top of the range Ferrari sort of hyper cars
- 44:20from the days of the 2 8 8 that basically they a Hot Rod 3 0 8.
- 44:24This is something completely different in terms of order new by the bot
- 44:30messaging personalized at the factory for the Batmans who ordered at new 645.
- 44:36Miles.
- 44:38We're already asking for 10, five, 10 million, 500,000.
- 44:47None of these supercars do very high mileages.
- 44:51Unfortunately, no, it would be very hard to find at Canara or
- 44:55a Mustang with miles this low.
- 44:57But surely there are other F 50 out there that have miles that are this
- 45:01low that might be able to command this kind of massive premium.
- 45:06Well, let's, let's, let's put a ribbon around that, right?
- 45:09Where do you drive an Enzo where you can actually enjoy it?
- 45:15There better not be any speed bumps in your neighborhood.
- 45:18We've broken through to the, the other side is Jim Morrison
- 45:21and the doors would sing.
- 45:23We're asking for 12 million on this car now.
- 45:27This is a record, isn't it?
- 45:29I, I believe it might be.
- 45:30I'd have to go, go back and check.
- 45:32But this is exciting.
- 45:35We, we talked before we, we came on air about how there's a momentum around
- 45:41auctions and, and how if one car early in the auction and performs that can lead
- 45:46to under performance in, in other cars.
- 45:50You seem to be experiencing the opposite effect here.
- 45:52There seems to be a flywheel effect of very high prices in a correction
- 45:59of this size and magnitude.
- 46:02Anybody who's bidding probably has agents in the field that
- 46:05are doing the bidding for them.
- 46:07They've probably researched these cars thoroughly inspected them.
- 46:11Any bidding here would not be a surprise, and unless it comes down to who really
- 46:16wants the car at the end of it all.
- 46:17But I think, I think a lot of research has been done.
- 46:27They're pushing right now.
- 46:40There's this hush that has come over the audience as they're pushing the number.
- 46:48Yes.
- 46:48Everybody else
- 46:58closing.
- 47:02Wow.
- 47:04Asking for 12 six now.
- 47:15Wow.
- 47:19Asking 13 million.
- 47:22You know what they say?
- 47:23That there only needs to be two people in the audience who really want it.
- 47:27Yeah.
- 47:27Right.
- 47:2813 million.
- 47:2913 million
- 47:33motivated seller and two willing bids.
- 47:35That's all you need.
- 47:36I mean, we haven't even gone to the Bianco special yet, and we're seeing history
- 47:39being created right in front of us.
- 47:41Yeah.
- 47:41The whole pricing curve for all these cars is brand new.
- 47:53Yesterday when we were walking round, we were talking about whether it really
- 47:58made sense for the Backman collection to be at Mecca and whether or not it
- 48:02should be a standalone event, 19 million.
- 48:05Now, it should have been handled by perhaps one of the
- 48:09other, or auction companies.
- 48:11Well, I think we can confirm that this probably has to be the right environment
- 48:17for the Batman collection to be sold.
- 48:19Yeah, for sure.
- 48:20This is.
- 48:20Turned out to be a great move to bring this collection here.
- 48:24The stadium's full, there's excitement everywhere.
- 48:27Positive atmosphere.
- 48:29The money is here.
- 48:31Yeah.
- 48:32Am we still grinding up 13, 2 50, asking now?
- 48:37Yeah.
- 48:37They're not letting go of this 13 million.
- 48:42Any fear of speed on the auction block is, uh, is, uh, unfounded.
- 48:49Well, and the hilarious part is right behind.
- 48:51This is also a super ultra rare FXX, so we've got two heavy hitters back to back.
- 48:58Love it.
- 48:59And they're both yellow, I'm not mistaken.
- 49:01Oh, there's a lot of yellow This Dave.
- 49:02Love it.
- 49:05You know what, I find it refreshing and Florida's the, uh, sunshine
- 49:08state and, uh, this looks like the color that we need here.
- 49:11You know, if you like mustard more than ketchup, I get it.
- 49:14It is.
- 49:14Okay.
- 49:17I'm apt to put both on my hot dog.
- 49:19You know, I love both condiments.
- 49:20Absolutely.
- 49:21I'm with you.
- 49:24John's more of a chili man, you know.
- 49:26Oh, that's delicious too.
- 49:29We're asking 14 million right now for, there's no reserve for Ferrari.
- 49:34Enzo order New by the Bachmans customized at the factory to their specification.
- 49:42So this is safe to say this is a singular example of the Ultra Air Enzo,
- 49:50and it is going into the stratosphere.
- 49:56The, uh, the ink on my pen is gonna run dry before we finalize this bit, I think.
- 50:01I think so.
- 50:02There's still a little bit of juice to extract from this one.
- 50:05This is exciting.
- 50:06I, I didn't come here to see, uh, see a doll auction and, uh,
- 50:10this is, this is actually, uh, this is better than caffeine.
- 50:15Yeah, this is really exciting.
- 50:16We just said we felt that, I mean, the styling wasn't that desirable.
- 50:20Agent battery, maybe the yellow would, would hurt the price of it.
- 50:23Well look at that.
- 50:2515 million.
- 50:26My God, I'd have to say this is delicious in honor of your
- 50:31recent Schumacher episode.
- 50:32John, I am going to mention that Michael's Enzo was black.
- 50:37Just wanna point that out.
- 50:39Flying.
- 50:40If I could choose a color to have me and I'd have mine in black.
- 50:43I like a black Ferrari
- 50:47asking 15 million.
- 50:49Now on the auction block,
- 51:03we've obviously got two motivated bidders at minimum, but I'd
- 51:06like to know where they are.
- 51:07Are they in the crowd?
- 51:08Are they up near the block on the phone?
- 51:1414,
- 51:18or is that into hundred thousand dollars increments there?
- 51:21Yeah,
- 51:33I want to see somebody putting their paddle up.
- 51:42Sold at 15 million.
- 51:52They still bidding.
- 51:59Okay, so we've hit 15 million, now they're going 15.
- 52:01Two 50,
- 52:14got it.
- 52:1715 two.
- 52:2550.
- 52:32Come on.
- 52:3250 50. Wrote
- 52:36asking 15 million, $500,000 for this one family.
- 52:42One couple from new, we are in uncharted territory with right now.
- 52:57Where are the dragons?
- 52:59Has as black car.
- 53:01Lord knows what that would be worth.
- 53:06That's a before or after conversation, John, but we can't have that yet.
- 53:14Now asking 16 million
- 53:19at, they've got 15,000,500 asking 16 million.
- 53:2315 million.
- 53:27Wow.
- 53:2816 million.
- 53:30They have a bid for 16 million.
- 53:40It's not often.
- 53:41I struggle for words, but I'm sort of struggling for words at the moment.
- 53:44I, I was expecting this to make about a million and a half or two.
- 53:48Right?
- 54:03They've got $16 million in the room.
- 54:06In the room.
- 54:10You know, John, it might have been cheaper to buy everybody a beer in this stadium.
- 54:19I'm getting chills.
- 54:20I'm having.
- 54:20Anole moment today.
- 54:22There's a bidder in the room that just made the last
- 54:25winning the last highest bid.
- 54:37Okay.
- 54:3816,000,500 is the, is the now
- 55:05$16,250,000. Wow.
- 55:11In the, I believe it's in the room too.
- 55:13That's what, 6 million over record, right?
- 55:15Yeah, 6 million over the, for the record previous record
- 55:23it, the classic car walk.
- 55:24It's got some legs yet then.
- 55:25Yeah, it does that though.
- 55:28This is that Bitcoin money, John?
- 55:32Yeah.
- 55:32I wish I'd gotten some of that.
- 55:33My God.
- 55:34It's Nvidia Tech stock cash outs.
- 55:39Now here's a race car straight up.
- 55:42Oh, Ferrari xx.
- 55:43I mean Fxx talk about an evolution off of the Enzo.
- 55:47So wasn't this similar to the Maserati mc 12?
- 55:52Correct.
- 55:52Was so which came first and I believe the mc 12 is older and
- 55:55then there was the mc 20 as well.
- 55:59This is the only example in yellow.
- 56:01Are these Fxx, is street legal or is it one of these things where you would tow to
- 56:05The William would know more on these than we do, but I always thought Legend had it.
- 56:10You couldn't actually own an FX X. I thought it was one of the
- 56:14cars that Ferrari would bring to you when you wanted to drive it.
- 56:17And then they would take it back to Ello and keep it under lock and cube.
- 56:20Is that, did they actually sell Epic X?
- 56:23No.
- 56:24I mean obviously they sold this one.
- 56:26Yeah, after two years something or something after or were special,
- 56:32they let it out of the wild.
- 56:34But Norm think the plan is or was that they kept it and maintained it?
- 56:39They would deliver Jack the whole nine yards, but then they kind of
- 56:42got a little more flexible with it.
- 56:43Yeah.
- 56:44How many FX sixes did they make?
- 56:46Not many, right?
- 56:47No, 25.
- 56:50Okay.
- 56:5025 cars.
- 56:51And can you get it set?
- 56:52It's all one in yellow.
- 56:53Can you get it serviced at your local Ferrari dealership or
- 56:56does it have to go right away?
- 56:57Back to Marin Will?
- 57:00Yeah, I was gonna say, will Silicon Valley Ferrari be able to look after
- 57:04mine when I buy it or you know, my guess would be they'd send it to a dealer
- 57:07or they'd buy someone older maybe.
- 57:11I mean that's if you actually drive the thing.
- 57:15Now I can't imagine an FXX would sell for less than an Enzo.
- 57:20It's way more rare.
- 57:22It's way more capable.
- 57:23I could be wrong
- 57:34if it does go for less than the Enzo, the Enzo guy's gonna
- 57:38look as if he had overpaid.
- 57:40Yeah, it's sort of stuck at 6 million right now.
- 57:45I mean it's, it's kind of funny to say that like, ah, it's
- 57:47Monopoly money or something.
- 57:48But yeah, it's, it's just sitting there.
- 57:52I wonder if the difference in bidding boils down to whether or not this
- 57:57car is actually usable in the wild, in the real world to some extent.
- 58:00Listen to that exhaust.
- 58:02Oh my goodness.
- 58:04Pure race car.
- 58:05I'm glad they started it.
- 58:07So this is some unique and theater, isn't it?
- 58:09We leave the engine off until the bidding stalls and when the bidding
- 58:13stall, we turn that and motor on.
- 58:15Well, and you also get a little high off the fum, so you might
- 58:18bid on it, you know, sold at.
- 58:216 million round.
- 58:22Is that right?
- 58:236 million flat.
- 58:24Interesting.
- 58:27The Ferrari 360.
- 58:29Now this example's a challenge.
- 58:31Strada and I, for one, would love to have a go in one of these.
- 58:33'cause the first Ferrari I ever drove was a, uh, 360 standard car at
- 58:40Thruxton ton the circuit in England.
- 58:42And it understood, oh my God, I got bush out a hundred
- 58:45miles an hour through church.
- 58:47I was so disappointed.
- 58:49We do that and I wanna charge one of these challenge to make sure they don't do that.
- 59:02William, would you be to tell me, is the FXX uh, actually road legal here?
- 59:06Yeah.
- 59:07Wow.
- 59:07Road legal race car.
- 59:09Just slap some plates on and yeah, it's awesome car.
- 59:15Oh my gosh.
- 59:17John claims that he made a 360 motor, a under steer truck, and I, I'm
- 59:22wondering if there's a pattern here.
- 59:24Yeah, I don't know that it's the car.
- 59:26I, I believe it might be the driver.
- 59:29Understood.
- 59:29Can be fun.
- 59:30A good running joke in the studio, John and his under steer cars.
- 59:34Yeah, I, I should say we've, uh, offline we were talking about this and, and you
- 59:38think I turned into early, don't you?
- 59:40I, I think you early apex my friend.
- 59:42You, you need to go a little later, a little deeper, a little later.
- 59:45And that applies to a lot of things in life.
- 59:46But, you know, hey,
- 59:50what do we make of the red accents on this challenge to the red tail
- 59:55panel and the red headlight inserts?
- 59:58What do we make of that?
- 59:59I, I'm gonna say this.
- 1:00:00I am not a fan, but I am a fan of like tinted headlights.
- 1:00:05But then again, I do harken back to the days of the Amber French headlights.
- 1:00:10There's some, I love the yellow headlights on something.
- 1:00:13I think they just look super cool and I've done that on a couple race cars
- 1:00:16myself, where I'll convert them over to have the French style headlights.
- 1:00:19I, the red is.
- 1:00:21It's a contrast to the yellow, but to me it makes it feel a little bit too hot.
- 1:00:26Wheels.
- 1:00:29Yeah.
- 1:00:29I could be wrong, but I believe this example has all the kit that was
- 1:00:35supposed to come, uh, be installed for competition but never was.
- 1:00:39It comes with the extra features.
- 1:00:42But this to my understanding, this car was never used in competition.
- 1:00:46So does it have the roll cage and so does it have the roll cage and everything?
- 1:00:49The all, all that does come with the car, to my understanding.
- 1:00:52And in the, the package of, uh, extras.
- 1:00:55Okay.
- 1:00:55It came with them and then there was a directive not to install them
- 1:00:58and the car was not to be tracked.
- 1:01:01So you have a real challenge, STLE, this is actually a, you know, not
- 1:01:06fully fitted out for competition.
- 1:01:07Yeah.
- 1:01:07You challenge cat that was truly full of Stle.
- 1:01:10Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:11True to its name.
- 1:01:12Which is funny 'cause I learned through William.
- 1:01:14There's actually a separate manual on how to put together the challenge package.
- 1:01:19They walk you through how to install all those components to
- 1:01:22include how the roll cage should be welded and where it should be.
- 1:01:26It's very, very intricate.
- 1:01:28So could you take a 360 and retro it into a challenge ada?
- 1:01:32Yeah, because it's all boltons, it's sort of a three series
- 1:01:35BMW morphed into an M three.
- 1:01:37What's the difference between the two?
- 1:01:39For a long time it was Boltons, right?
- 1:01:41So I think the same is very true of these three sixties.
- 1:01:45You can make them cup cars, but do you wanna make them authentic cup cars or
- 1:01:49do you wanna make them aftermarket?
- 1:01:51And that's where you gotta make a decision today getting a hold of a
- 1:01:55Strada package that's still in the boxes.
- 1:01:59That's as rare as the car itself.
- 1:02:00Yeah, car just did a million dollars, which I'd never, I never
- 1:02:04would've imagined I would ever see a 360, make a million dollars.
- 1:02:08And that, I think that's goes straight back to the fact that that kit was
- 1:02:11never, uh, the, the factory equipment was not put on for competition.
- 1:02:16And I think it makes this car even more interesting.
- 1:02:18Right.
- 1:02:19And you know.
- 1:02:21And then, you know, the new owner does have a decision to make.
- 1:02:23And if it were me, I'd covet the equipment, but I
- 1:02:27would keep it the way it is.
- 1:02:28I just, I'm that kind of a guy.
- 1:02:30Yeah.
- 1:02:30Yes, absolutely.
- 1:02:31Because that yellow with the red light, so just distinctive.
- 1:02:34Everybody would know it was your car.
- 1:02:36And I think for a lot of collectors that's important.
- 1:02:38Exactly.
- 1:02:38And then I think you run into the problem where if that challenge strada
- 1:02:43kit is numbers matching to the car, if you are this discerning enthusiast that
- 1:02:48just bought this one, would you sell it to somebody that wants to do what you
- 1:02:52want to do, John, which is bolted into a regular 360 to make it a cup car.
- 1:02:56Now we've got this weird dilemma because it's a very specific buyer who would want
- 1:03:01to get that kick, but I think it sort of just lives with the car in perpetuity.
- 1:03:07To me it's similar to a, um, a Dodge Demon with the demon crate.
- 1:03:13And I'm always looking, if I, when I'm, when I'm, uh, looking
- 1:03:17at a car that's considering a car that needs an auction description,
- 1:03:20does it come with the demon crate?
- 1:03:22And is it, and then even at that, has it been opened even?
- 1:03:25And it's sort of like I'd leave it alone.
- 1:03:27Like the Ark of the Covenant.
- 1:03:29Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:30You know what I mean?
- 1:03:30Well, you know what happens when you open that you've seen the movie, so Oh yeah.
- 1:03:35Things that have been started in the motion cannot be reversed
- 1:03:38at from that point forward.
- 1:03:41So we have this, uh, Daytona on the block, a million dollar mark.
- 1:03:46Looking at the provenance on this, it seems like it was a car that the Backmans
- 1:03:50very much used for showing purposes.
- 1:03:53It seems to have won a, a number of, of Concor in in the past there.
- 1:03:58Of course, this is a very large part of the Ferrari community that going
- 1:04:04to shows the competition and, and if you've ever done any show field judging,
- 1:04:09you'll know that the Ferrari Club has very high standards of judging.
- 1:04:14I know some of the concourses I judge at out on the West coast.
- 1:04:17We let the Ferrari guys judge their own class, judge.
- 1:04:20Rest of it, 432 miles one of 19 produced in its color combination.
- 1:04:29You've just gotta respect this car regardless of color.
- 1:04:33The yellow's interesting.
- 1:04:38We're at 1,150,000 is the ask, you know, you know what really stands out to me
- 1:04:44about the design of this car that I maybe don't notice in some of the other colors?
- 1:04:49And I've said before, I'm not a big fan of this body style.
- 1:04:52I think it's that front turn signal that really sort of turns me off in yellow.
- 1:04:58It's apparent, it's like this punch up in the eye.
- 1:05:01I think maybe it was less noticeable with the fiberglass front like
- 1:05:04we saw in the previous car.
- 1:05:06Interesting.
- 1:05:08My feeling around that is, can you see the, the side marker
- 1:05:11to towards the, the end there?
- 1:05:13Euro spec cars do not have those side markers.
- 1:05:17And for, for me, it's a small thing, but those side markers are ugly.
- 1:05:21I would certainly prefer a Euro spec car a lot, and especially during that
- 1:05:26time period, you know, in the early seventies when they were, hadn't
- 1:05:29introduced the big safety bumpers, you know, all those kinds of things.
- 1:05:32A lot of that stuff would just bolted on, tacked on.
- 1:05:34It's like, let's go down to the local trailer supply store and
- 1:05:37grab some rectangle reflectors and glue 'em to the side of the car.
- 1:05:42It looks, I don't know, luckily, you know, with some dental floss and a heat gun,
- 1:05:46you could take a lot of that stuff off.
- 1:05:522 75 behind that one.
- 1:05:54That combat, that's gonna be another big number.
- 1:05:59Oh yeah, this 5 75 m 625 miles.
- 1:06:03The last example built for the US with the, uh, rev ahr co, uh, roof.
- 1:06:10I guess, uh, that changes.
- 1:06:12Its, uh, very, its opacity, it flips back.
- 1:06:16I've actually never seen this reef style before.
- 1:06:20I miss it.
- 1:06:20When we were walking around yesterday, I've never seen this before.
- 1:06:23It'd be interesting to know, you know, how that roof mechanism functions.
- 1:06:27Uh, there was a factory patch or fix when owners were having difficulty with it.
- 1:06:33Great technological leap.
- 1:06:34Uh, these roof, uh, designs are being in use, uh, today with various manufacturers.
- 1:06:41It's in yellow.
- 1:06:42Again, just a, just a super cool, interesting Ferrari,
- 1:06:47modern Ferrari supercar.
- 1:06:52It kind of reminds me in a way of that Shelby series one that we
- 1:06:56saw yesterday in its body lines.
- 1:06:59I mean, again, the five 50 and five 70 fives, they're handsome grand tours, but
- 1:07:04once you cut the roof off of them, I, I I'm still trying to just put it together.
- 1:07:09You know, I'm trying.
- 1:07:09You are correct.
- 1:07:10Yeah.
- 1:07:10I think that certainly speaks to the era when these cars were, uh,
- 1:07:13designed, developed, and built.
- 1:07:16Absolutely.
- 1:07:16It's got that look definitely similarity to the series one.
- 1:07:20And so we dive deeper into this roof line.
- 1:07:22It's not a convertible, it's sort of a targa or what we would have
- 1:07:26called a targa in the seventies.
- 1:07:28Yeah.
- 1:07:28With a power operated variable, uh, opacity roof.
- 1:07:32There is a debate, isn't the between five 50 and five seven fives because
- 1:07:37the five seven fives were only available with an automatic transmission,
- 1:07:42whereas the five fifties, the earlier cars were available with a stick.
- 1:07:46So for me, the five 50 is always more desirable than a 5 7 5.
- 1:07:52'cause of that third pedal, especially, uh, the, we're going through the, the
- 1:07:56era when there's that transition from the six speed and the F1 automatic
- 1:08:01availability to the F1 automatic only.
- 1:08:04It would be interesting to see what both flavors of the car would,
- 1:08:07of the, of them would be like.
- 1:08:09Well, and you know what's really good about this 5 50, 5 75 conversation is
- 1:08:13that William devoted an entire episode to the nuances between the five 50, the
- 1:08:185 75, and which one you should or should.
- 1:08:20Not invested and opportunities you have to, let's say, modify them,
- 1:08:24do the manual transmission swap.
- 1:08:26So if you're wanna dive a little deeper, I would take one of those.
- 1:08:29I would take one of those cars all day long because they won't be
- 1:08:31worth the same as the original cars.
- 1:08:33I would love a, a manual converted one
- 1:08:38for me, A old fashioned, but this 2 7 5 GTB alloy four camp car that
- 1:08:46is crossing the block at the moment is my favorite of the Backman cars.
- 1:08:51Yeah.
- 1:08:51The best spec beautiful, from what I understand is am,
- 1:08:55am I correct or incorrect?
- 1:08:56It's one of the last of the really handbuilt Ferrari bodies.
- 1:09:00I believe that to be true.
- 1:09:02So that would've been a scte body car, right?
- 1:09:05I believe so.
- 1:09:06There's a great article in Car and Driver, I believe from 1967 where the
- 1:09:14rider sat on a, on a bar stool with a 2 75 GTB and just considered it visually
- 1:09:21for about a day and really could not find one body dimension that matched
- 1:09:28the one on the other side of the car.
- 1:09:30Like the, the, the differences were minute, but what they came up with at
- 1:09:34the end was these are handbuilt creations and we'll likely never see them again.
- 1:09:40And isn't that great?
- 1:09:42And you know what?
- 1:09:43I don't care if my right rear rocker panel is one millimeter off and if
- 1:09:48somebody was actually working over a form and, and beating panels,
- 1:09:54because that's craftsmanship, right?
- 1:09:55That's craftsmanship.
- 1:09:56And and of course you're gonna see that.
- 1:09:58Yeah, it's the kind of artisanal craftsmanship that, you know, we love
- 1:10:03craft bread and we are ready to pay a premium for handmade crafted stuff,
- 1:10:10stuff from before the machine age.
- 1:10:13And it cars like this absolutely symbolize that.
- 1:10:18I would say about it, about these 2 7, 5.
- 1:10:20So I, uh, I asked Ed Gilbertson, who's very well known in the Ferrari
- 1:10:26community, I asked him what, you know, he's owned and driven Ferrari
- 1:10:31for the last six or seven decades.
- 1:10:34What's his, you know, from a purely driver's perspective, what's the
- 1:10:37best Ferrari you've ever owned?
- 1:10:39And he said, A two cam, 2 7 5.
- 1:10:42'cause the four cams did not make a lot more power than the two cams and were
- 1:10:46a lot more difficult to, to maintain.
- 1:10:49So for him, the best driving Ferrari price, no object to two cam 2, 7, 5.
- 1:10:56No doubt with the steel body rate.
- 1:10:57'cause those allied body ones too expensive, too easy to paint the panels.
- 1:11:03Now I'm not as much a Ferrari historian as let's say William is.
- 1:11:07These were Colombo motors right at this point, or had they
- 1:11:10already evolved past that point?
- 1:11:11I believe, I believe they were.
- 1:11:13Yeah.
- 1:11:14Whole price on that.
- 1:11:15That's a, the whole deal with Colombo and lamp Brady Motors
- 1:11:21is, is really interesting.
- 1:11:23If, if you look into the 2 75 GB four, um, the, the two V 12, both
- 1:11:29the Colombo and the lamp radio were available in increasing displacement.
- 1:11:33And, and literally when Ferrari was employing ano, it was the
- 1:11:37Colombo motor that was developed.
- 1:11:39But when he fell out with Colombo, he
- 1:11:43was the motor that was developed.
- 1:11:45Then when Lamp Brady left, we went back to developing the Colombo.
- 1:11:50You can tell, looking under the hood by the spark plug position,
- 1:11:54whether it's a Colombo or a lamb, I forget which one has the plugs high
- 1:11:58and which one has the plugs low.
- 1:11:59But that's how you can tell.
- 1:12:01Now here's a shape.
- 1:12:03Here's a Ferrari that I really like.
- 1:12:05I think these are underappreciated.
- 1:12:07The Luso, this is a really pretty car.
- 1:12:10Now we've talked about Enzo's daily driver, which is the
- 1:12:14three 30 Super America, right?
- 1:12:163 32 plus 3 32 plus two, right?
- 1:12:19With that.
- 1:12:20Weirdly Penta, you know, rear glass thing that it's got going on.
- 1:12:24I don't like it 'cause it, it, it takes away from the sleek body shape that
- 1:12:29you see in the Berlin Luso because the cars are very similar in design,
- 1:12:33but this still re retains all that curvature, much like a 300 sl, right?
- 1:12:39To me it's the Ferrari's version of that.
- 1:12:41I, it's a very pretty car.
- 1:12:44These are gorgeous cars and I love the way the, the frontal treatment looks
- 1:12:48almost like shark, like how it protrudes just a little ever so much the hood.
- 1:12:52And it's just a beautiful, beautiful car.
- 1:12:55And it's glad I'm well, they've been getting their due for years
- 1:12:58now, but it's, uh, good to see.
- 1:12:59And we're already at 2 million for the ask.
- 1:13:06These are another Ferrari that presents very, very well in silver
- 1:13:10or black, right over the traditional red or yellow, dark blue as well.
- 1:13:14Yes.
- 1:13:15Extraordinarily well in dark blue.
- 1:13:18Is there an undesirable, uh, color on these cars?
- 1:13:22They're just so beautiful.
- 1:13:23It's not yellow.
- 1:13:32You're laying me the waist, but yeah, you know what, it's nice to see
- 1:13:34that a different, a different hue, uh, a different color in the mix.
- 1:13:47A rosso cor is amazing on any carb, on any Ferrari, but this just something
- 1:13:52more dignified about a color like this.
- 1:13:56Well, as we just clip past the $2.3 million moment, I'm reminded of when I
- 1:14:01was at an auction back in, oh, would've been 2006, something like that, when
- 1:14:08Steve McQueen's, Luso was sold and, and made 2.3 million, which at the time
- 1:14:15people will fall in off their chairs at the thought of Aus making 2.3.
- 1:14:20Yeah, we're back to that era again here.
- 1:14:23This is great.
- 1:14:27The stadium's still full looking for bids.
- 1:14:32The ask is 2.6 million.
- 1:14:36I really love this.
- 1:14:37Just icy gray throws a little bit of blue under these neon lights.
- 1:14:42Obviously on tv it looks different than it does in person.
- 1:14:45It's a absolutely gorgeous car.
- 1:14:47Yeah, it effect on tv, isn't it?
- 1:14:49It looks far more blue in the coverage that we can see in the studio here.
- 1:14:55I, I would have to say as Ferrari passenger cars go, I mean, we,
- 1:15:00we can all sort of lean on the 3 0 8 and, and things like that.
- 1:15:04This is, in my opinion, one of the best.
- 1:15:08I really like it.
- 1:15:09There's little doubt.
- 1:15:10This is one of the most elegant Ferraris.
- 1:15:15This is not the right auctioneer to have doing the stars.
- 1:15:20The guy's good, but he's not the right person.
- 1:15:25Why are you saying that with him?
- 1:15:27'cause I mean, he just, I keep, all I can think of is cattle her, not Drew,
- 1:15:33because it's just, I'm thinking 67 to 72 Chevy C tens coming through and Blazers.
- 1:15:41I love 'em.
- 1:15:42You love 'em.
- 1:15:43And, but there's a lot of them,
- 1:15:48and I know there's a schedule and, uh, you know, you gotta push them dogies through.
- 1:15:52But, uh, these cars deserve to have, uh, I think a little more, uh, possibly a little
- 1:15:58more time and, well, I, I feel like we're, we have a little bit of a breathing space
- 1:16:02at the moment, but this is a car that's, I also feel is stalled out at the moment.
- 1:16:07And we've created a breathing space only because it's not at the same level.
- 1:16:11Like maybe as the buying audience that just picked up that Enzo
- 1:16:15and picked up the, the FXX.
- 1:16:17Right.
- 1:16:17That's a different, you know, breed of collector or buyer.
- 1:16:20Both these cars coming,
- 1:16:24UPO one six.
- 1:16:25Yeah.
- 1:16:25Different you, you're right.
- 1:16:28Different collector.
- 1:16:29And I'd love to know what the demographic, you know, metrics
- 1:16:32are for the bid profiles here.
- 1:16:34Obviously the company's probably mining that and looking at it, but
- 1:16:37it'd be interesting to see how the market has shifted Who's going for
- 1:16:41the classic, the rare, classic era Ferraris, who's focused on the modern
- 1:16:46and who's focused on the supercars.
- 1:16:48And here we have the earliest car in the Backman collection,
- 1:16:53the 1953 or 1 66 mm body by vile.
- 1:17:00Usually these one six sixes I think have, uh, touring or pin in for bodies on them.
- 1:17:06Noticeable to me, at least as a vile lover, as the, the cutaway
- 1:17:11spats under the headlights.
- 1:17:13They, the way the body's been cut away.
- 1:17:15And of course that mm, designation refers to the mille milia.
- 1:17:19And really, you can't talk about Ferrari without thinking about the
- 1:17:24milia, that figure of eight road race around Italy that ran for so long.
- 1:17:29Because for, for Ferrari, this was the use case for his cars.
- 1:17:35Winning the mil mil was what it was all about.
- 1:17:38It wasn't about selling lots of cars.
- 1:17:40It wasn't about even really about Formula One.
- 1:17:43It became about Formula One after the milli milia ended.
- 1:17:47But when the mil mil was running, that was what Ferrari was all about.
- 1:17:51And this car was built for that event.
- 1:17:55Yeah.
- 1:17:55You know what's interesting about the Al Body though, when I look at it,
- 1:17:58if I wasn't in the know or didn't, you know, appreciate these cars for
- 1:18:03their history and whatnot, I look at it and think British Roadster,
- 1:18:07I think like AC Bristol, I think in that direction in terms of the island.
- 1:18:11'cause the, the AC ace was based on the Ferrari 1 66 and of course the AC ace
- 1:18:17was the car that Shelby took and became.
- 1:18:21The Cobra.
- 1:18:22So the Cobra styling wise is directly related to the Ferrari one six.
- 1:18:28What really excites me is how Vinali could craft an elemental competition.
- 1:18:36Roadster, like a spider body with events at the rear, et cetera, events at the
- 1:18:42side and a tight envelope body, and yet make it look elegant and beautiful.
- 1:18:49This would be an amazing car on the road if you wanted to tour it.
- 1:18:53And I believe I see, uh, road rally stripes on the side.
- 1:18:58It looks like Colorado brand possibly that the Bachmans might use this car on.
- 1:19:02And what a, what an amazing way to go through a long distance road tour
- 1:19:07slash rally than in, in this 1 66.
- 1:19:11Uh mm. Beautiful and, and elegant.
- 1:19:14And yet at the same time, effective.
- 1:19:18Would you wear a helmet on the Colorado brand in this car?
- 1:19:21I'd wear a pilot's World War II helmet and go aviator goggles.
- 1:19:24I'd go like, I'd be like this.
- 1:19:26I'd full, I'd Do you know, I'd want a full head because there's no row bar.
- 1:19:30Yeah, there's an easy car to turn.
- 1:19:31Aren't, I mean, look at this guy.
- 1:19:32He, he's probably five foot something.
- 1:19:35He sticks way out over the top of that car.
- 1:19:37Well, the whole deal with the arrow screens were was that they were minted,
- 1:19:40the screen didn't come up to your face.
- 1:19:42The screen was only designed to throw the air over, over your head.
- 1:19:46Yeah, like a deflector more.
- 1:19:49That was low though.
- 1:19:50That guy, guy, that was a one five.
- 1:19:52That 1, 1 9.
- 1:19:53It installed at one five and then it went up to two.
- 1:19:55When did you last see, uh, fifties Ferrari with competition history
- 1:20:01go for less than $2 million.
- 1:20:03Yeah, that, it's the audience right
- 1:20:07now.
- 1:20:07This car 3 48, this was always one of my favorites.
- 1:20:11I felt like it was like the baby tester.
- 1:20:13Yeah, it was the affordable one, right?
- 1:20:15It had the same layout.
- 1:20:16V eight powered instead of V 12 Powered.
- 1:20:19Same.
- 1:20:19Look and feel.
- 1:20:19Obviously the T. The later five 12 looks like a 3 48.
- 1:20:23They kind of copied that front end.
- 1:20:25I really like these.
- 1:20:26I actually think it wears yellow pretty well.
- 1:20:28So I feel like a hypocrite saying that, but you know, 'cause you
- 1:20:31know how I feel about yellow.
- 1:20:32But we won't hold that against you, Eric, the MO press.
- 1:20:35It's fine.
- 1:20:36The mojo press at the time didn't rate them.
- 1:20:39I mean, I'm not sure if I really believe what the Moin press say, but that's
- 1:20:44what I remember in period, that they weren't as sharp as they might have been.
- 1:20:48And it wasn't until the 3 5 5 came along that they really became great cars drive.
- 1:20:53What disillusioned me with the 3 5 5 was that F1 training with
- 1:20:58that little joystick thing.
- 1:20:59And I was like, you got rid of the gated shifter.
- 1:21:01So immediately I was sort of turned off even as a young enthusiast,
- 1:21:05I was like, that should have a stick shift that shouldn't have
- 1:21:07this weird flappy paddle thing.
- 1:21:09And, and, and actually I feel as though, and maybe it's true to, to engineering
- 1:21:13chronology Ferrari was the first to really start introducing the flappy
- 1:21:17paddle gearbox into production cards.
- 1:21:19Yes they were.
- 1:21:20Because it was, they, because when you were buying a Ferrari, you were
- 1:21:23wanting to get Formula One technology and the whole flappy paddle gearbox
- 1:21:28is like a double win, isn't it?
- 1:21:29I mean, I live in California and they say the best way to make sure
- 1:21:33you don't get your car stolen in California is driver stick ship.
- 1:21:36Nobody can drive stick anymore.
- 1:21:40I have to say, you know, I, I know Ferrari is known probably primarily for
- 1:21:45its classic Enzo era, V 12 cars, but bless them for bifurcating into the mid
- 1:21:52engine V eight line and the heritage that they've had since the seventies with that
- 1:21:57and continuing in the V 12 tradition.
- 1:22:00Hi, I, I gotta interrupt you Dave.
- 1:22:02Coming up is William's car?
- 1:22:04Yeah, we're gonna see him playing a bid on this 400 high work in progress.
- 1:22:11So this foot, the four hundreds are unloved, aren't they?
- 1:22:14This is a V 12.
- 1:22:17You can get five speed ones V 12 Ferrari.
- 1:22:20For what, under $50,000?
- 1:22:23You can get air condition for four.
- 1:22:26I would not buy one in front of 50,000 because that means it's gonna lead another
- 1:22:30about $50,000 worth of work mechanically.
- 1:22:34So a sweet spot would be about 80 to a hundred.
- 1:22:37'cause then, you know it's been gone through the whole
- 1:22:38nine yard service records.
- 1:22:40You can jive it for about three weeks, then you have to put
- 1:22:42another 20 grand for mechanical.
- 1:22:45They have the best reliability.
- 1:22:47But I mean, just smooth.
- 1:22:49I mean that's just a grand tour right there.
- 1:22:51Yeah.
- 1:22:52I just love it.
- 1:22:52PE people don't like the three box shape.
- 1:22:55And I, I personally, I think these are really good looking cars.
- 1:22:58I like the Daytona nose and I like the three box shape.
- 1:23:01And I like the fact that there is room in the backseat because
- 1:23:05at least that way it is easier to use a car that has a backseat, a
- 1:23:09two seat car, you tend not to use.
- 1:23:12'cause there's no room.
- 1:23:13I just love the crisp styling.
- 1:23:14The, the body.
- 1:23:15Look at it's already, uh, the ask is a hundred thousand
- 1:23:17priced out right on the gate.
- 1:23:20There's still, there's still hope, there's still time.
- 1:23:22So William, was it the 400 or the four 12?
- 1:23:25That was in Rain Man.
- 1:23:26400 I believe for the movie nerds out there.
- 1:23:30You know, one of these cars was a celebrity for 15 minutes.
- 1:23:33Yeah.
- 1:23:33Was that the beginning when they were in the import building?
- 1:23:37You had those, that's what you drove them around in.
- 1:23:39Oh, that's right.
- 1:23:40Wait, he's counting as jelly beans.
- 1:23:42I haven't seen that movie in 30 years.
- 1:23:46Alright, here we have that five 12 MI love it or hate it with these headlights.
- 1:23:51What do you think, John?
- 1:23:51What do you think?
- 1:23:52You're the design guy.
- 1:23:53I am not a big fan of, of these particular headlights.
- 1:23:58I don't like it when on cows like Mazda RX sevens, like FDRX sevens, they change
- 1:24:04the popup lights to being behind the plexi or they go the sleepy eye lights.
- 1:24:08The, I'm just not a fan of that.
- 1:24:11I feel like I like the tester also having the popup lights.
- 1:24:14This isn't a disaster for me, but I, I prefer that that
- 1:24:17straight, whole contr my friend.
- 1:24:19I would not throw that this car outta my.
- 1:24:20Rush fried crackers.
- 1:24:21I'll tell you that much.
- 1:24:22Okay.
- 1:24:22But I will say in the defense of this design idea, yeah, the F 40 LM looks
- 1:24:29good with this style of headlight.
- 1:24:32It just, I don't know, there's something about the shape of the
- 1:24:34five 12 that it doesn't wear it well.
- 1:24:36Yeah.
- 1:24:36I'll tell you what though.
- 1:24:37Those wheels are awesome with the curved spokes.
- 1:24:41That is just incredible.
- 1:24:42The classic Ferrari five spoke with a bit of a curve on it, love it.
- 1:24:46But they feel like an answer to Porsche's turbo twist.
- 1:24:50That's what that wheel looks like to me.
- 1:24:51And actually because, well now you've said that they spoil is spoiling for me.
- 1:24:55You're welcome.
- 1:24:55Now I can unsee it, but you can't, what's also, if you
- 1:24:58notice it's an optical illusion.
- 1:25:01The wheel is probably 17 inches, maybe 18 inches.
- 1:25:04But because of the rivets, to make it look multi-piece, the wheel still sort of looks
- 1:25:08like a 15 inch five star off of a 3 0 8.
- 1:25:12And with its really high offset being outboard of the car,
- 1:25:16it looks a little strange.
- 1:25:17I would want something like a deep lipped fixie type of wheel.
- 1:25:21You know, I know that's very German, but I think it would just look better.
- 1:25:24It would also maybe make the headlights look better.
- 1:25:27Now, we've not talked about the bachman's relationship with the Ferrari
- 1:25:32special order programs, have we?
- 1:25:34But this car's very illustrative of these special order kind of programs
- 1:25:41that Ferrari did and the way that the Backmans worked with Ferrari
- 1:25:47and had a special relationship with Ferrari to have the cars customized
- 1:25:51and exactly the way that they wanted.
- 1:25:53So this guy yellow over yellow wheels with blue accents, but
- 1:26:00then there is blue, I wanna say pinstriping, is that what we call it,
- 1:26:04around interiors and, and strikes?
- 1:26:07You know, it's, it's what we might say in England, it's, it's a Marmite color.
- 1:26:10You either love it or hate it.
- 1:26:13Is this color combination though the frontal treatment with the
- 1:26:16blue cross the nose and then up the, the longitudinal stripe?
- 1:26:20Is that a nod to Belgian racing blue, like Jacque Swats team?
- 1:26:26Iie Beic and possibly, um, like the original GTO there, isn't there one that
- 1:26:32had a blue nose treatment like that?
- 1:26:35I'm not sure about about that, but I, I think you may be right, because
- 1:26:39looking at this car yesterday, I found myself thinking, you know, I,
- 1:26:42I'm not a fan of the color combo, but that stripe, I've never seen a stripe
- 1:26:46where the color is on the air dam and on the nose of the car, and then it
- 1:26:51goes to the stripe up over the top.
- 1:26:52It looks to me like a Tour de France livery or, or a, a 62 to 64 GTO.
- 1:26:59But I could be wrong.
- 1:27:01It just seems to me like Akii, uh, Frans, I think is what the
- 1:27:04name of s SWAT's, uh, team was.
- 1:27:06I'm wondering if that might be the inspiration.
- 1:27:08Somewhat.
- 1:27:10It's unique car, unique treatment.
- 1:27:15Well, judging by the $3 million that we're at, at the moment, the unusual color
- 1:27:19accommodation has not put off becomes Florida bidders, and it's different.
- 1:27:24You'll certainly not be the, uh, the same as anybody else at a concor or an event.
- 1:27:31You know what I like about this?
- 1:27:33The Bachman's had a passion for Ferrari.
- 1:27:36They truly did.
- 1:27:37And, and, and also the hobby of showing at events.
- 1:27:41But to be able to go and spec out a brand new Ferrari the way you want
- 1:27:47it to fulfill your vision with the factory in collaboration, to me, one
- 1:27:53European delivery in one lifetime of any car would be a thrill.
- 1:27:58And they did this several times, had cars built to their spec
- 1:28:02by buying one of those cars.
- 1:28:04You are becoming part of that legacy, which is a really awesome thing.
- 1:28:08Absolutely.
- 1:28:08Right from the beginning.
- 1:28:10You've got that right Dave.
- 1:28:12I mean, I'm with you.
- 1:28:13Granted, the, the car that's next in line is a contradiction because
- 1:28:17it's a different color combination.
- 1:28:18Right?
- 1:28:18We're going with a yellow with a. Lime green accent over this yellow and blue.
- 1:28:23And when I was sort of thinking about it at first, I'm with John
- 1:28:26in the sense that maybe it's not my cup of Earl Gray, but maybe there's
- 1:28:31some cultural significance there.
- 1:28:32Maybe it's the colors of one of the, the football clubs, or maybe it's part
- 1:28:36of the logos of one of the polio horses of Sienna or something like that.
- 1:28:40Like we'd have to dig in a little bit more to the Bachman story to
- 1:28:44understand why they chose these colors.
- 1:28:47And unfortunately maybe over time, much like the Bianca Spial that we're
- 1:28:51going to see later this afternoon.
- 1:28:53It's one of those we may never know.
- 1:28:55And sadly, and the thing is they obviously, the Bachman's chose
- 1:28:59these combinations and these options purposefully with intention.
- 1:29:03And I'd love to know the significance of these colors and, and maybe it's
- 1:29:07a conversation with somebody at the factory to really nail it down.
- 1:29:11And I would be open to that at any time.
- 1:29:16And that's what makes Ferrari ownership and Ferrari culture so fascinating.
- 1:29:22There's so many unanswered questions in a lot of respects that really
- 1:29:26somebody knows the answer to
- 1:29:41this one compared to the blue and yellow one, for me is a challenge to want to have
- 1:29:49in my collection as I use the reference.
- 1:29:52Maybe it's a little too hot Wheels it, it's maybe beyond that.
- 1:29:55It feels like a basketball sneaker.
- 1:30:00That's funny.
- 1:30:01Yeah.
- 1:30:01Well you know what, this car is a product of its era too, and that's certainly when
- 1:30:07things like basketball culture, sneakers, they became kind of couture items.
- 1:30:12And when you're in that league where you're ordering and personalizing a
- 1:30:16Ferrari with the factory's personalization department to make a one of one.
- 1:30:20A spoke car again, there's gotta be some kind of a cultural significance,
- 1:30:25personal connection, something.
- 1:30:28This car is already, they're at a $4 million.
- 1:30:31Ask again, these cars are all home runs out of the park.
- 1:30:37I believe this one is again, part of the magic.
- 1:30:41They, they really are looking.
- 1:30:42Yesterday I looked at these two cars and I thought, just for the sake of
- 1:30:46the backmans, I hope these cars bring more than they would if they were just
- 1:30:51standard colors and standard whatever.
- 1:30:54But because it does kind of hurt the eyes a little bit, you know, the yellow
- 1:30:58and the green there again, clearly the Florida audience is lapping up the rarity.
- 1:31:04Absolutely.
- 1:31:06Absolutely.
- 1:31:09So let me put you in the mind of factory worker, Giovanni Ti of
- 1:31:15donuts that put this thing together.
- 1:31:18That's Johnny bag of donuts.
- 1:31:20The American listeners out there that was putting this together, John, what
- 1:31:23do you think he was thinking when he was stitching together this green interior?
- 1:31:28Bloody, the Americans would buy anything.
- 1:31:32Well, isn't that, isn't that the funny part of Ferrari history?
- 1:31:35Right.
- 1:31:35If they couldn't sell it, take 'em to California.
- 1:31:37'cause the Californians will buy anything.
- 1:31:39Right?
- 1:31:39Well that's what they used to say when I worked at the Black Haw Black Hawk Museum
- 1:31:43in, in Danville in northern California.
- 1:31:44We had a, uh, salmon over gray Ferrari 3 7 5.
- 1:31:49And I used to look at it and think it was the ugliest thing.
- 1:31:51Then I learned about the 3 7 5 mojo and then suddenly I began to
- 1:31:55think, oh, this is really cool.
- 1:31:57It looks like the love child of a 57 Chevy and a proper Ferrari.
- 1:32:02But you know, it's like, it's a real proper Ferrari.
- 1:32:06Yankee Netti apparently set about that car when it wouldn't sell on the East Coast.
- 1:32:10You know, just put it out to California.
- 1:32:12They'll buy anything out there.
- 1:32:15Well, somebody just bought this erta for four and a half million dollars.
- 1:32:20Can you.
- 1:32:22I'm gonna get my sneakers on.
- 1:32:24I'd love to tour this.
- 1:32:30Well now we'll see how the BBI, uh, Ferrari five 12 BBI
- 1:32:34performs against the 365, uh, bb.
- 1:32:37Phil and Martha were clearly real lovers of the bb Yeah.
- 1:32:42Having what shape the aesthetic.
- 1:32:44Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:32:46Now, as I understand it, they were large car dealers.
- 1:32:50Did they have, uh, a Ferrari dealership under their wing too?
- 1:32:54Would you know?
- 1:32:54I don't think so.
- 1:32:56Hi.
- 1:32:57Behind this.
- 1:32:57Okay, good, reliable cars.
- 1:33:01And, um, so every CRX owner in the middle America contributed to this
- 1:33:06collection at some point in their life.
- 1:33:10Eric, you were asking about styling differences between the
- 1:33:123, 6, 5 and the five twelves.
- 1:33:15One fairly distinctive difference, which I should have mentioned earlier,
- 1:33:19is the early cars have six taillights.
- 1:33:22The later ones only have four.
- 1:33:25So this BB has four.
- 1:33:27That yellow 3 6 5 has six.
- 1:33:30So the function was just kind of Tom, Don other.
- 1:33:34And the other thing is, those orange reflectors are those lights, fog lights.
- 1:33:41The, the flip up headlights are behind them.
- 1:33:44Yeah.
- 1:33:44So those are running lights, the orange up front turn signal, they're turn signals.
- 1:33:52Could you imagine seeing something this coming?
- 1:33:55The other, you know, in the other lane, uh, in oncoming traffic, uh,
- 1:33:58when you're tooling around somewhere,
- 1:34:03that would be a memorable event sold at 550,000.
- 1:34:08So in Ferrari speak, of course, GTB Grand Touring Berlinetta, the hard
- 1:34:14top GTS is the target model with the, uh, removable roof panel here.
- 1:34:21Is for spider indeed
- 1:34:26early 3 0 8 Carre.
- 1:34:28These later ones fuel injected.
- 1:34:32That's where the eye comes into play.
- 1:34:34Eye for injected.
- 1:34:40I cannot believe the breadth and depth and scope of this collection, and
- 1:34:46I'm not trying to chill for anybody.
- 1:34:48This is, this is thrilling.
- 1:34:50We've got 1, 2, 3, 3 more pages of Boman cars.
- 1:34:58This is fabulous.
- 1:35:00Again, I just love sort of the modern thrust of this collection.
- 1:35:05They do pay tribute to some of the classics, but this is really
- 1:35:08unique, in my opinion, for a single family Ferrari collection.
- 1:35:12Well, and isn't it striking how the cars that have underperformed and there
- 1:35:16are a couple that look like they have underperformed, have all been offset
- 1:35:21by that crazy price for the Enzo?
- 1:35:24It's interesting.
- 1:35:24I, I don't know if it breaks down to the logic of the run
- 1:35:28order or is it the car itself?
- 1:35:31There's more questions than answers.
- 1:35:32When to, to your question, John.
- 1:35:34Now we lean into another beautiful shape.
- 1:35:36We're talking Dino 2 46 is here.
- 1:35:38The Ferrari, that isn't a Ferrari but is a Ferrari.
- 1:35:41Right?
- 1:35:41Because it doesn't carry a Ferrari badge.
- 1:35:43It carries a Dino badge and it's in commemoration of his dear departed Sun.
- 1:35:48And always impressed with how gorgeous these cars are and the precursor to the 3
- 1:35:530 8, and it's really the genesis of this.
- 1:35:55Yeah, I know.
- 1:35:56My understanding was, was that Dino as an engineering student, was in, involved
- 1:36:01in designing the V six motor that went into the late fifties Formula One cars,
- 1:36:08and it was a derivation of that motor that went into this car, the Dino, and
- 1:36:13since it wasn't a fourth B12 Ferrari, Ferrari thought he would name the car
- 1:36:17after his son, hence the the Dino badging.
- 1:36:20Of course, nobody knew what a dino was.
- 1:36:22There was a bit of a challenge in the showroom.
- 1:36:24So in short order, they ditched the Dino badging and just put a straight
- 1:36:29prancing horse on the, on the road.
- 1:36:31That legacy is so poignant, but I like the idea that they called it Dino and tribute
- 1:36:37because it's, it's kind of like, it, it lends to my mind more exclusivity, even
- 1:36:42though it was an important production model, 1,274 maiden, all of the 2 46.
- 1:36:48But it's like Cher, you know, or, uh, prince or why not Liberace?
- 1:36:55It's a singular given name and I, I really, I really kinda like that legacy.
- 1:37:01We're at 825,000 for the ask on the Dino.
- 1:37:05Fabulous.
- 1:37:07Now, the, there are various versions of these Dinos aren't there?
- 1:37:11The early ones are two oh sixes.
- 1:37:14And although the performance is less, they are considered more desirable,
- 1:37:18I think, and certainly more valuable because of the rarity later models
- 1:37:22that they called the big chair models.
- 1:37:24I think specifically for the US market, where the, the early cars
- 1:37:28were, where they narrower body on them, and I think the later ones had
- 1:37:32bigger seats in a slightly wider body to accommodate your bigger American.
- 1:37:36So was this a p Farina design or was this one of the other folks at Ferrari
- 1:37:43that came up with this body shape?
- 1:37:44Because the reason I ask is it has that sort of bini feel.
- 1:37:49It also reminds me of a Porsche 9 0 4, which is around the same time period, but
- 1:37:55obviously the 3 0 8 was body p farina.
- 1:37:58So I'm guessing this is two because it's an evolution, right?
- 1:38:02Yeah, I, I, I'd have to check, but I think this is a p and farina style car.
- 1:38:06I, I think at this time far, I was still not building the cars in house.
- 1:38:11Um, and I'm not sure in the fifties it was Scte.
- 1:38:15Scte would often build the cars that were styled by somebody else.
- 1:38:19Scte was the.
- 1:38:21The builder, the Dino never saw any sort of, let's say, racing victories, not
- 1:38:26officially from the factory, but that motor lived onto victory in the large
- 1:38:31RAOs in the WRC base in that motor won.
- 1:38:34The last was, was in the car, was the last front engine car
- 1:38:38to win a Formula one grand pri.
- 1:38:40It really is a significant engine and if you think about it, it's a V six and
- 1:38:44that racing engine was developed just shortly after Launchy invented the V six.
- 1:38:51So now we're looking at a F 12 TDF.
- 1:38:53I know William likes these quite a bit.
- 1:38:55Well, in that TDF thing, it speaks to Ferrari naming cars for
- 1:39:00races that they participated in.
- 1:39:02This is a road rally around France and TDF is two to fourth.
- 1:39:07Uh, it's another car that also reminds me of a viper in that
- 1:39:11shape, and I wrong about that.
- 1:39:14I also see C seven Corvette in it a little bit.
- 1:39:16Yeah, it's very much so, but it works.
- 1:39:18I mean, I, I have no, no shade on it.
- 1:39:20Yeah.
- 1:39:21For, for me, this is one of the best looking modern Ferrari.
- 1:39:25I would agree with you that I love the, I love the cuts in the rear fender that
- 1:39:29make you think of the cuts in the fender behind the front wheel of an F 40.
- 1:39:35I'll just add, too bad it's yellow.
- 1:39:41You know what, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
- 1:39:44I actually think this guy looks pretty good in yellow.
- 1:39:47I think like, like a Corvette.
- 1:39:49It wears it.
- 1:39:49Well, yes.
- 1:39:52Now I will say it's hard to visualize it on the TV because it's doing this
- 1:39:57interesting reflection, but I would say it's a little bit more gold
- 1:40:00than just a straight fly yellow.
- 1:40:02It looks like it has some metallic in it.
- 1:40:04It would almost a satin finish.
- 1:40:06Yeah, it does have a sort of satiny like magnolia kind of color to it, doesn't it?
- 1:40:11I, I like it.
- 1:40:12And maybe because it's not the regular yellow, it's gluten spicy
- 1:40:17brown versus frenches yellow mustard.
- 1:40:24It's more Dee, isn't it?
- 1:40:28Mm. You're making me hungry.
- 1:40:32Where's the guy with the beer and the hot dogs?
- 1:40:34Yeah, that's what we need.
- 1:40:37It'd be appropriate.
- 1:40:38Actually, you know what?
- 1:40:38It would work inside the stadium.
- 1:40:40Do you remember that James Bond movie where the, the bond girl is named Zena
- 1:40:45on a Top and there's that wonderful scene where Bond and her are racing down into
- 1:40:51Monaco on the winding road into Monaco.
- 1:40:54And of course the car Zena on a top is driving is a Ferrari 3 5, 5 convertible
- 1:41:01just like we have crossing the block.
- 1:41:02Now hers is red.
- 1:41:03This is a Batman cars.
- 1:41:04Of course it's yellow.
- 1:41:05I'm more of a hard top guy than an open top guy.
- 1:41:08I agree with you.
- 1:41:09I agree with you.
- 1:41:10But this is a great looking car.
- 1:41:11Yeah, it is.
- 1:41:12It is.
- 1:41:14You know it's funny you went to that James Bond movie with the car
- 1:41:17chase scene headed down into Monaco.
- 1:41:19'cause I thought you were actually gonna talk about Barbara Carrera as
- 1:41:22Fatima Blush driving a Reno R five Turbo being chased by James Bond on
- 1:41:27A BMW motorcycle That I remember.
- 1:41:29I don't, there's, there's not a BMW motorcycle or a RiNo five turbo on
- 1:41:33crossing the block at the moment.
- 1:41:34I
- 1:41:39I think it's
- 1:41:454 75 fer a Ferrari three five.
- 1:41:50Five.
- 1:41:50My god.
- 1:41:51John, this 360, you and I have talked about quite a bit.
- 1:41:54It's another challenge.
- 1:41:56Rad.
- 1:41:56I don't know the provenance on this one, whether or not the challenge
- 1:41:59kid is in a box like the yellow one was, but the color, when was the
- 1:42:03last time you saw a green Ferrari?
- 1:42:06I, I can't remember the last time I saw it.
- 1:42:07It's certainly a British racing green Ferrari and, and surely
- 1:42:11there cannot be very many challenge stradas in British racing Green.
- 1:42:16Oh, you looks pretty good in it.
- 1:42:17I Beautiful.
- 1:42:17You still got challenge Strada Stripe, hasn't it?
- 1:42:20And this is that.
- 1:42:20Green.
- 1:42:21I was talking about with the magnum fill in 3 0 8 that they used, the 3 0 8 came
- 1:42:26into green like this and it wears it.
- 1:42:28Well I, I wish more Ferrari came into color like this, but the
- 1:42:32green pairs very well with a tan interior that it has as well.
- 1:42:36I think it was absolutely stunning.
- 1:42:40I mean, William normally three sixty's clock in at, is it standard 360?
- 1:42:45Yeah, just standard 360 or even an, even a regular challenge
- 1:42:47Should, where are they coming in at pricewise, your standard 360 Depends.
- 1:42:53F1 train or a manual.
- 1:42:55If you got F1 trade, depending on miles, low, hundreds factory, six
- 1:42:59feet high, hundreds, maybe even low two hundreds depending on mileage.
- 1:43:02Everything.
- 1:43:03Like they have provenance.
- 1:43:04They challenge the dollars though.
- 1:43:06They're going through the roof to all a million dollars.
- 1:43:08Well this one here is already a record, but it's the color.
- 1:43:13But your standard challenge dollars are approaching a million dollars.
- 1:43:17Wow.
- 1:43:17And two years ago, two years ago, you probably could have got it for
- 1:43:21300 grand, if not a little less.
- 1:43:23He maybe even a year ago.
- 1:43:25Damn.
- 1:43:25Kept gone nuts.
- 1:43:26And the challenge for rally, other than all the bolt on race car stuff that
- 1:43:30they come with, obviously, was there actually a performance difference?
- 1:43:33Yes.
- 1:43:34Immensely.
- 1:43:35'cause it's got definitely tranny.
- 1:43:36They rework the ECU.
- 1:43:38So your shifts are faster, crisper like that.
- 1:43:41It's more solid.
- 1:43:42There's not so much chassis flex.
- 1:43:45That's basically the pinnacle of, of the 360 production.
- 1:43:48That's how they all should have been built.
- 1:43:49That thing is phenomenal.
- 1:43:51You talked about chassis stiffness, all that, that comes from the fact
- 1:43:53of having the roll cage and all that.
- 1:43:55But if you have, let's say like the yellow challenge tri that they had
- 1:43:59earlier that didn't have that, you basically just have a 360 with a chip.
- 1:44:03Nah, I mean suspension everyth like that.
- 1:44:06I mean there's more tweaks for the motor than just to, but wouldn't
- 1:44:09the suspension be in the boxes?
- 1:44:10'cause you have to convert it over, right?
- 1:44:12I mean, if you wanted to, yeah,
- 1:44:15you could technically, but by the time you purchased that.
- 1:44:21Everyth and did it all so that much as buy a real one.
- 1:44:24Yeah, I mean the big thing that people do though is on Standard 360 is they'll
- 1:44:28buy the challenge front and rear grills.
- 1:44:31So they'll put the front end on it and the rear end on it, and then they buy
- 1:44:34the wheels for it and then they fiddle with the suspension and drop it to
- 1:44:37make it look like it's challenge stroll because it looks beautiful like that.
- 1:44:40So that's what a lot of people do it out in the market.
- 1:44:43You'll see that because everyone will market it or you'll be able to see it.
- 1:44:47Clearly it's got a challenge, front grill and rear grill and everything on it
- 1:44:51because it just finishes off really nice.
- 1:44:55We are back in the swing of grand touring cars.
- 1:44:58We've got a 5 75 Super America, this is like, they drove this
- 1:45:01from quite a bit, 1700 miles.
- 1:45:04Oh wow.
- 1:45:06I mean, when you have 46 cars, you gotta spread the love a little.
- 1:45:09You gotta drive all of them at least every once in a while, right?
- 1:45:11Yeah.
- 1:45:13Well, I was gonna say is if you have a larger number of vehicles,
- 1:45:16it's actually hard to put a decent number of miles onto vehicle.
- 1:45:20If, if, if the Backmans used their cars, they drove to and from a couple of
- 1:45:25show events that might justify the two, 300 miles that they put on the cars.
- 1:45:30They went to a show, they came back again.
- 1:45:32That was it.
- 1:45:32They only did one show with that car, three shows with that car.
- 1:45:36And that's why it has, maybe they took it to a show and you know, went out to
- 1:45:39dinner in a couple of times and you, if you 40 cars, if you use one car every
- 1:45:44weekend for a year, you know, you've got enough cars to last you a whole year.
- 1:45:49If I, I've not explained myself pretty well there, but I think you
- 1:45:51understand what I'm talking about, these British math skills, you know,
- 1:45:58we're using the metric system today, John.
- 1:46:01Yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:01No, Pam Shillings and Pence here.
- 1:46:05Respect, I mean, I've gotta deal with that myself.
- 1:46:08A lot of conversions for our Canadian contingent over here.
- 1:46:11Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:46:13So a brown dino.
- 1:46:15Now, now we all know about the, uh, that green dino that was
- 1:46:19buried in the garden in LA for.
- 1:46:20All those years, there's a lot of value in the rare colored Ferrari, right?
- 1:46:25Is that that brown?
- 1:46:26Would you consider that brown?
- 1:46:28You have to have a creative name for it.
- 1:46:30Maroni.
- 1:46:31Is it, did I pronounce it properly?
- 1:46:33But you know, mar is actually chestnut, like, ah, interesting.
- 1:46:37I did not know Maroni.
- 1:46:38It's like does, yeah.
- 1:46:39So like the husk of a chestnut.
- 1:46:41Yeah.
- 1:46:42It's interesting and different.
- 1:46:44And I'm liking it.
- 1:46:46It's metallic too.
- 1:46:47It's very interesting.
- 1:46:48But now it's, it's brown was really period appropriate in the early seventies.
- 1:46:53A lot of cars came.
- 1:46:54Shades of brown and earth tones.
- 1:46:56We'll call them that.
- 1:46:57It's got a very just sort of, I don't know, dignified, elegant look to it.
- 1:47:02It does.
- 1:47:02Ken.
- 1:47:03I, I would not have put this, uh, if you'd have asked me before, if I hadn't
- 1:47:06have looked at, you know, hacker's price guide or whatever, I'd have suspected
- 1:47:11that, uh, Dino was worth half a million.
- 1:47:14And here we are.
- 1:47:15Well on the way to three quarters of a million for this one.
- 1:47:18Well, during the last financial crisis in 2009, I remember the finest Dino
- 1:47:23available on the market at auction.
- 1:47:25At a high end auction.
- 1:47:26175 to 190.
- 1:47:28That's it.
- 1:47:29That was all the money I used to, I did a job one time selling area
- 1:47:34or photographs, door to door.
- 1:47:36I door knocked one house, got talking with the guy.
- 1:47:40He had a dino in the garage.
- 1:47:42We got it out.
- 1:47:42We sat in it.
- 1:47:43We had a little look at it.
- 1:47:44I didn't sell him an hour or a photograph.
- 1:47:46I did look at his Dino.
- 1:47:47He had paid 43,000 pounds for it.
- 1:47:50Now that's the mid nineties, but, oh, that's, is that most expensive
- 1:47:54Dino that you were talking about?
- 1:47:55Is that the one that Cher owned?
- 1:47:57Not that I'm aware of, no.
- 1:47:59Oh, I heard hers was worth more because her butt cheeks
- 1:48:01were in the seat, you know,
- 1:48:05to throw back.
- 1:48:06That's a good one.
- 1:48:06Our drive through episodes here.
- 1:48:07Oh, that's funny.
- 1:48:08Here comes the most gorgeous car.
- 1:48:10The whole lot.
- 1:48:13You know, if it wasn't manual then okay, you might be able to tolerate it,
- 1:48:17but I don't understand this kind of.
- 1:48:21Icing on top of the cake thinking the bachmans were colorblind.
- 1:48:23Well, it kind of looks like icing on top of chocolate cake.
- 1:48:26I mean it's, yeah.
- 1:48:27Or like a cinnamon roll.
- 1:48:29I mean, I'm trying to put a positive spin on this thing.
- 1:48:31It's breakfast food.
- 1:48:33I mean that's, yeah, this is gonna be a longer hate.
- 1:48:35I mean, I believe the colors though, where the product of the fact that it was a
- 1:48:39Asante, so one of 60 examples and there was something to do with the celebrations
- 1:48:45of Ferrari's 60th anniversary.
- 1:48:48And I think that was sort of the root of the, of the color
- 1:48:51combination, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:48:54Can we call it cappuccino?
- 1:48:56I like it.
- 1:48:57Cappuccino's delicious, right, Ryan?
- 1:48:58Yeah.
- 1:48:58Yeah.
- 1:48:59So it's got, you got the coffee and then you got the foam on top.
- 1:49:01You know what, I think I would, daily this is, it, is it more appealing now that
- 1:49:05I've framed it that way, if anything with caffeine, uh, that makes it work for me?
- 1:49:14Well, we're already at 400 and thousand, uh, 4 25 is the ask.
- 1:49:19So we'll need to keep track of which YouTube influencer bought this car.
- 1:49:28Well, the, the buyer can be assured that there's no other example
- 1:49:31like this one of 66 12 scte ante, if I pronounce that properly.
- 1:49:37I just wanna confirm for the sheer sake of science, brown is not a
- 1:49:42color men or colorblind to Right.
- 1:49:44It's blues and things.
- 1:49:48You could be Right.
- 1:49:51So this was a conscious decision.
- 1:49:54Yep.
- 1:49:54It's uh, it was border named by the Blands.
- 1:49:58So if you want exclusivity, there's no other one of the 60 that are like this.
- 1:50:07I'm thinking this kind of look reminds me of a, of a mid seventies Barcelona
- 1:50:12edition, EMC Matador, and I liked it.
- 1:50:16Oh, wow.
- 1:50:16I liked it too.
- 1:50:17You went there?
- 1:50:18Oh yeah.
- 1:50:18I had to go there.
- 1:50:20Much fun.
- 1:50:21Though, can we put the not sure stripe of vinyl on it.
- 1:50:24I'm not sure if the Batmans would appreciate the a MC comparison.
- 1:50:27Exactly.
- 1:50:28We do though.
- 1:50:29I, I very much appreciate that.
- 1:50:31That is a reach.
- 1:50:31I think the products of Kenosha, Wisconsin are criminally, criminally unrecognized.
- 1:50:39And by the way, I dig the gremlin.
- 1:50:41Oh, I'm not afraid to say it.
- 1:50:42You know, if you really wanted to go full lampoon this thing, you could turn
- 1:50:48the bottom part into a wood paneling.
- 1:50:51Oh, the whole rule.
- 1:50:524, 6 5. That would be cool.
- 1:50:53That wood rule.
- 1:50:54That would be really cool.
- 1:50:55It did, but then you'd be joking aside, you would be hurt in the backmans
- 1:51:00provenance to do that, would you?
- 1:51:01When well painted faux wood green paneling
- 1:51:06a car I knew 20 years ago is back.
- 1:51:09It's a 96 Chevy Impala wagon Black.
- 1:51:13And the, the, the owner's daughter at the time, she put faux wood
- 1:51:17grain that terminated in flames on the rear quarter panels.
- 1:51:20And it's delicious.
- 1:51:21It's back for sale again.
- 1:51:22And I want it.
- 1:51:24So if you're listening, I'm in the market.
- 1:51:27Well, we have yet another 3 0 8 on the block.
- 1:51:31Something we haven't seen before.
- 1:51:32And again, not so long ago, these were sub hundred thousand dollars cars.
- 1:51:36And here we are taking a cruise past 150.
- 1:51:39But look, it is a early car.
- 1:51:41It's a Backman car, so low miles, easy to understand why the premium's being paid.
- 1:51:48There's a dealer down the street from me.
- 1:51:50It's, I say a buyer pay here a lot, but sketchy say the least.
- 1:51:54But you know, he gets decent stuff.
- 1:51:55But you know, you get those like high mileage stuff that it says no credit,
- 1:51:59it says no credit checks William.
- 1:51:59We get it.
- 1:52:00Sorry.
- 1:52:00But he gets in his short store showroom, he gets some couple
- 1:52:04nice pieces of inventory.
- 1:52:06He's had an 84, uh, he's got a black on black 3 0 8 super, like
- 1:52:139,000 miles immaculate, gorgeous.
- 1:52:16He's had it for like two plus years now because he's asking 95 grand.
- 1:52:19So the guy's not out alone.
- 1:52:20Because what you're getting, price your wises, I mean Randy's have better
- 1:52:24provenance one owner, stuff like that.
- 1:52:26But, but surely really what you're saying is the reason your guy can't sell it for
- 1:52:3295 and that one just sold for two 10.
- 1:52:35A lot of that is to do with the atmosphere.
- 1:52:37Yeah.
- 1:52:38And the Buckman thing and the fact that all these cars have come along,
- 1:52:42boom, boom, boom, one after another.
- 1:52:44Well, here we have a special 1 20 17 Ferrari, LA Ferrari apta.
- 1:52:51This is a million dollar car to start with.
- 1:52:54What's the premium on the APTA over the closed ones?
- 1:52:57Is this the one, are they rare?
- 1:52:59Ra 50%.
- 1:53:02Wow.
- 1:53:0340 50. Yeah.
- 1:53:04It's massive.
- 1:53:05Now the car that was formerly owned by Sammy Hagar, the cream colored
- 1:53:10one at Bear Jackson last year, was that an app Herta, do you know?
- 1:53:15Or if that was the coop?
- 1:53:17I doubt not.
- 1:53:18It'd be interesting to be able to tease out.
- 1:53:21Okay.
- 1:53:22Coop versus Aita.
- 1:53:23Wow.
- 1:53:24Starting at 5 million in Oh yeah.
- 1:53:26We're way past Sammy's three and a half from last year.
- 1:53:30So obviously celebrity provenance doesn't make that big a difference in this market.
- 1:53:35So a one of two 10 La Ferrari apta, they're asking for 9 million now.
- 1:53:42I was gonna say driving a, uh, Ferrari, LA Ferrari now under Sammy Hager.
- 1:53:47I can't drive 55.
- 1:53:49Yeah.
- 1:53:51Yeah.
- 1:53:51You won't be driving 55 in one of these
- 1:53:58nine.
- 1:54:00Well, we rushed up to nine and then it sat, hasn't it?
- 1:54:03It stalled out.
- 1:54:04Nine.
- 1:54:06Nine.
- 1:54:06We popped a clutch early.
- 1:54:07That was that, that that Enzo is looking OTT, is it not?
- 1:54:11Yeah.
- 1:54:28So the open air app, not celebrity provenance, but certainly well
- 1:54:36known and respected Ferrari ownership from New by the Bachmans.
- 1:54:42It's interesting to see the gap.
- 1:54:44Is this new money looking for a home?
- 1:54:47Uh, is this market correct?
- 1:54:48Are we seeing a new trend?
- 1:54:50Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:54:53But you can definitely tell the money is flowing to the more modern cars.
- 1:54:57Absolutely.
- 1:54:57Right.
- 1:54:57There seems to be a breaking point at the five fifties and the 3 55 range.
- 1:55:02Anything older than that is kind of selling.
- 1:55:04Other than the tester Rosas, which seemed to be an anomaly.
- 1:55:07Everything else kinda seems to be selling where it should be.
- 1:55:09But these are just over the top, as John puts it.
- 1:55:12Yeah.
- 1:55:13Sort like that one.
- 1:55:14Six six.
- 1:55:15They should have broken that out and sent that somewhere else.
- 1:55:18Yeah.
- 1:55:20Oh, well, 10 million.
- 1:55:32I can't help but feeling if I worked at Ferrari, certainly if I was in finance
- 1:55:36at Ferrari, I would look at these prices that the cars make just a few years.
- 1:55:41This is less than 10 years after this car's sold and think, wow, we
- 1:55:44undersold those cars a hundred percent.
- 1:55:46Our price for selling new was too low in a, in a big component of that.
- 1:55:50This is a 2017 model.
- 1:55:52And it's very easy to find online how much things have inflated pri
- 1:55:57in terms of price and how much money has deflated in a lot of currencies.
- 1:56:02I think it's a function of that as well.
- 1:56:04And it, it's, I don't wanna be flipping and say it's all relative, but on
- 1:56:08the other hand, there's definitely macro issues that have affected the
- 1:56:12nominal prices, the numbers that people are willing to bid versus
- 1:56:16the true intrinsic value of the car.
- 1:56:19But this is a, again, another paradigm shift.
- 1:56:22When you look at, again, the Sammy Hagar car, not to keep going harping
- 1:56:25on that, I think it was three to 4 million, three and a half, something like
- 1:56:29that is what the, the winning bid was.
- 1:56:32And you put that against where we are at right now with, uh, with 10 million.
- 1:56:37There we go.
- 1:56:38Yes.
- 1:56:38Even with the Backman provenance, even with the premium for it being an
- 1:56:42erta that still makes this car look very highly priced in comparison to
- 1:56:49the Hagar car, it's a significant premium, uh, we're seeing here.
- 1:56:55I, I would say, I, I think the celebrity provenance thing is interesting.
- 1:56:59I mean, there was a Ford Escort that had been owned by Princess
- 1:57:02Diana that made a ridiculous price.
- 1:57:05I feel like the kind of person who's buying a LA Ferrari is not
- 1:57:09the kind of person who would pay a premium for celebrity ownership.
- 1:57:14If that celebrity ownership was a rock singer, they might pay a premium if
- 1:57:19that was a different kind of celebrity.
- 1:57:21But to pay a premium for a rock star owned car, you have to sort of be a rock fan.
- 1:57:27And my sense is a lot of the people buying these cars are not those kind of people.
- 1:57:31I think you're right.
- 1:57:32I think these are people that are making, actually, despite the electric air here,
- 1:57:36they're making quite sober decisions on what they're willing to spend.
- 1:57:40Do you think it's individuals or do you think it's groups?
- 1:57:45Do you think it's an individual bid or do you think it's like a investment group
- 1:57:48where three or four of us are gonna own the car together and share it and share.
- 1:57:52Highway.
- 1:57:53And if it's an investment group, they're very low profile and
- 1:57:56under the, under the radar.
- 1:57:58I, that's a great question.
- 1:58:00I I do know that there's a number of people that have tried to form
- 1:58:03limited partnerships or hedge funds or just pools, pools of money.
- 1:58:09You know, maybe that's something that's happening now too that could
- 1:58:12explain some of these dollars.
- 1:58:14I don't think anybody's really being flippant with their bids.
- 1:58:18I think that they're actually really, you know, there's la clapping and crowds,
- 1:58:24but I think people are actually really digging in and doing their homework.
- 1:58:30So it'd be interesting to see the quarter 10 and a quarter
- 1:58:34for the, uh, perala Ferrari.
- 1:58:39We got another heavy hitter here.
- 1:58:41We're going with a La Ferrari coop instead of the erta.
- 1:58:45So, interesting contrast between the two.
- 1:58:48I've got pricing.
- 1:58:49Well you're thinking 50% difference between, you're saying
- 1:58:515 million for this one should between five to six, maybe seven.
- 1:58:55'cause of one owner the low miles that then the question is, is
- 1:58:59it's got the new battery in it.
- 1:59:00Has that been done?
- 1:59:02Uh, tell us about the new battery in the old battery.
- 1:59:05William.
- 1:59:06Better cooling, more, uh, efficient.
- 1:59:09You know, longer lasting and, and it, what they just did a new
- 1:59:12battery in the production life of the car, or It was a war.
- 1:59:16There's like a retrofit thing that you can do that's got a retrofit.
- 1:59:19It was done on a warranty so that it didn't cost the owner anything.
- 1:59:22Technology jumped so fast after this couple years, five, 10 years, you
- 1:59:27know, it was double the life of it.
- 1:59:30Everything.
- 1:59:31I mean, it just made sense.
- 1:59:32So Ferrari actually did the right thing and stepped up and replaced him.
- 1:59:38Now William, is that a warranty replacement or is that something
- 1:59:41that's at an extra cost for the owner?
- 1:59:43No, it was a warranty deal that Ferrari did for him.
- 1:59:45Oh, that's, that is stepping up Absolutely.
- 1:59:47For the customer that's been like hundred, $200.
- 1:59:50Wow.
- 1:59:53Probably not a simple procedure to do the change out either.
- 1:59:55No.
- 1:59:56We were sat at six for a little bit there now, but now it's clicked on to
- 2:00:00six and a half, which means we're a good way beyond William's estimate of
- 2:00:05uh, you know, the closed card being worth half what the open one is.
- 2:00:10It's only 15% over.
- 2:00:11It's not that much of a jump.
- 2:00:13It's an interesting contrast between the two.
- 2:00:15I mean, uh, just in terms of roof style, I would prefer the coop
- 2:00:19over the convertible, honestly.
- 2:00:20Yeah, I would too.
- 2:00:22That would be the world's fastest hairdryer in open form, would it not?
- 2:00:33I got six, 6 billion I should say.
- 2:00:37This is the last US delivered LaFerrari and this is a feature of the way that
- 2:00:44the backmans like to collect as they like to have as late a production car
- 2:00:50as they, uh, as they possibly could.
- 2:00:57That'll always be a selling feature if we're down the road for somebody.
- 2:01:00Ab absolutely provenance and uh, single ownership.
- 2:01:04And then here we are, 6.21, 6.1, 6.1
- 2:01:1173 365.
- 2:01:16William, you have another chance.
- 2:01:17There's another work in progress car here for you.
- 2:01:25So he should say that the official name of of the Daytona is 3 6 5 GTB
- 2:01:30stroke four, the four B and the four cam motor from the 2 7 5 GTB four
- 2:01:37Daytona being the Daytona 24 hours.
- 2:01:40And, and this being Ferrari's way of, uh, reminding Ford that he could
- 2:01:46still win some motor races and, and won the Daytona 24 hours shortly
- 2:01:50before this car came into production.
- 2:01:52Hence everybody knew it as the Daytona.
- 2:01:56That 1, 2, 3 photo finish though, uh, I know obviously it's intentional, but
- 2:02:01I'm wondering what Ford thought of that.
- 2:02:03Did they just kind of go, oh, whatever, or was that I would, I would love
- 2:02:08to have been a fly on the wall at, you know, Henry Ford the second
- 2:02:11in the offices in, in Dearborn to see what, what he thought of that.
- 2:02:16I wonder if in the early seventies, if Henry Ford was focused on the sport in the
- 2:02:22way that he'd been focused on it before.
- 2:02:24I feel like with the fuel crisis and all of the general, you know, safety
- 2:02:30stuff, the big bumpers, all of that kind of stuff, I feel like Ford probably his
- 2:02:35mind wasn't on the total performance as it had been in the sixties.
- 2:02:39They were very, very concerned, ready at the top of Ford Motor Company, as I
- 2:02:43understand it, when they abruptly pulled the plug on Motorsport in 1970, and then
- 2:02:48a little bit trickled out after that.
- 2:02:50But I, I think they were really afraid of being sued by, uh, the
- 2:02:54Department of Transportation or the federal government at the time.
- 2:02:56GM thought in 60, the early sixties that they would be broken up, um, with, uh,
- 2:03:02antitrust or, uh, for being too big.
- 2:03:05So performance was a linchpin and all that, and, and it put
- 2:03:08a target on these manufacturers backs at the time in America.
- 2:03:12So, yeah, I think you, you're onto something there.
- 2:03:15Now.
- 2:03:15I will walk back what I said earlier about not liking the design of the
- 2:03:19Daytona, because in race trim, like you're talking about John in the photo
- 2:03:24finish and the cars that they took to the mall, they are beautiful as a race car.
- 2:03:28They really are.
- 2:03:29Something about adding stickers to that body shape does make all the difference,
- 2:03:33at least for me, white, it's the white pipe side off on the race cars.
- 2:03:36Yes.
- 2:03:36A thousand percent.
- 2:03:38Yeah.
- 2:03:38Yeah.
- 2:03:39That it really does, it, it really lends itself well to
- 2:03:42like competition preparation.
- 2:03:43Absolutely.
- 2:03:46And these, it, it, you know, like I said, it, uh, it was,
- 2:03:50uh, one came second that the.
- 2:03:5279, uh, 24 hours a Daytona long after other competitors, uh, had retired.
- 2:04:01Well, for a car that needs a full restoration and probably another
- 2:04:05two or $300,000 spending on it, 430 seems a pretty good price.
- 2:04:11It does, it does.
- 2:04:12This time I saw a car with a primer colored body panel on it sell for more
- 2:04:17than a quarter of a million dollars.
- 2:04:18Yeah, right.
- 2:04:19Well there's definitely value to unlock with this one perfect
- 2:04:22candidate for an LS swap.
- 2:04:23I mean,
- 2:04:27there's a white tester on my mind that I can't forget about that needs an ls.
- 2:04:33No, this
- 2:04:39scoot 16 m Ooh, this guy makes some big money.
- 2:04:43These have been going through the roof too.
- 2:04:47So what's so special about the 16 m?
- 2:04:49I don't, it's a four 30 scud just in convertible.
- 2:04:54So the 16 m is indicative of just being a convertible.
- 2:04:57Yeah, but it's already called the Spider Talk to Ferrari.
- 2:05:04I forget what the meaning behind the 16 m is.
- 2:05:07There's something behind, I can't remember what the heck it is.
- 2:05:11It might be the 16 F1 championships.
- 2:05:14They had had that possibly.
- 2:05:16Oh, maybe So is this, uh, end of the line run out kind of model, William?
- 2:05:24Oh yeah.
- 2:05:25'cause he had the four three squad that this came after
- 2:05:27that kind of as the last rod.
- 2:05:28And they're incredible, incredible cars.
- 2:05:32Well, surely it's the ref, the, the final iteration of
- 2:05:35the 360 4 30 kind of platform.
- 2:05:38So if you get the very last one, aren't you getting the very best
- 2:05:41one with all the refinements?
- 2:05:43Well, you know, you can't really bundle a 360, 4 30 kind together.
- 2:05:45'cause the four 30 is such a completely different car than the 360.
- 2:05:49But yeah, I mean it's that point you just refined everything like that.
- 2:05:52Because look what they came out with.
- 2:05:54Then the 4, 5, 8 came out, annihilated everything.
- 2:05:57I mean, absolutely brilliant car, you know, V eight natural just
- 2:06:00screams, took everything they learned and just created an absolute
- 2:06:06masterpiece in the 4, 5, 8, especially when they got to the special out.
- 2:06:10In answer to, uh, what our speculation on the model designation, the 16 m
- 2:06:15refers to Ferrari's 16 World Grand Prix manufacturers, champions, titles.
- 2:06:20Yeah.
- 2:06:20Championships to the time, uh, to through two step seven.
- 2:06:24So William, you know, John's question was really interesting because it made
- 2:06:28me think, does the four 30 share more lineage or more DNA with the 360 or
- 2:06:35with the 4, 5 8 that came after it?
- 2:06:39It's hard to say.
- 2:06:40'cause the 360 4 2 looks so much alike underpinning wise, it probably shares
- 2:06:44more to 4, 5, 8, whereas, you know, obviously a static's gonna share more.
- 2:06:48360,
- 2:06:51to me it's sort of like, it's like the Cayman boxer thing, right?
- 2:06:55When they went 9 86, 7 18, this and that and the other thing.
- 2:06:59And you're sort of like, you sort of look at them and go, I recognize
- 2:07:02that that's the boxer in the Cayman.
- 2:07:04But it's those subtle differences in those generations.
- 2:07:09This seems mighty strong money.
- 2:07:11I may answer 1.8 Mighty strong money for a four 30.
- 2:07:25All right, so now we just gotta run to the mill four 30.
- 2:07:28Scott.
- 2:07:29Same color though.
- 2:07:30There's a lot of cars here, isn't it?
- 2:07:33I, I wonder if we might do what they do in Italian movie theaters and
- 2:07:37have a break in the middle so you can get some ice cream and take a pee.
- 2:07:40I mean, it is relentless, isn't it?
- 2:07:43And if a motorcycle rode by a Fellini film, it'd be great.
- 2:07:47It's definitely an attack of, uh, Ferrari.
- 2:07:49It's, it's amazing.
- 2:07:51I mean, I will say that.
- 2:07:52Crowd has thinned out since after the Enzo crossed the block because you know,
- 2:07:58maybe you got a little tired of seeing Ferrari's and Ferrari's and Ferrari's.
- 2:08:02I never thought I'd ever hear anybody say, you know, that that could be a
- 2:08:06reason you get it is like Ferrari fatigue.
- 2:08:09Yeah, it's interesting.
- 2:08:12The audience has definitely thinned and it'll be interested to see if this second
- 2:08:17F 40 that we have coming up shortly, bing more or less than the previous one.
- 2:08:21I, I didn't compare specifications to understand about value, but it is
- 2:08:25interesting that there was definitely more of a buzz earlier in the day.
- 2:08:33Yeah.
- 2:08:33And the bidding has also seemed to have slowed quite a bit.
- 2:08:36So whatever money was in the room might have been spent.
- 2:08:40You know what I, we've seen a lot of big numbers today, but I think that bidders
- 2:08:44are, and their representatives obviously in this space are doing their research.
- 2:08:49They're doing their homework.
- 2:08:51They are willing to bid what it takes, but I don't think that they're willing
- 2:08:55to throw money at the market either.
- 2:08:57Right.
- 2:08:58This is selective, it's stratified.
- 2:09:01This is on a car by car basis as we're seeing the results are
- 2:09:05great, but on the other hand it's, it's not something that, I'm just
- 2:09:08trying to pick out the trend here.
- 2:09:10What I'm seeing is good numbers, strong numbers, we're gonna have to gonna
- 2:09:14reflect on the rest of the market.
- 2:09:15That's what you are asking.
- 2:09:17Well, the fact that these are all supermar, low mile cars that have
- 2:09:22awesome provenance and because of the yellow, it's very distinctive.
- 2:09:26So that, that's three factors that might really encourage bid to open
- 2:09:31the checkbooks a little bit wider.
- 2:09:32Totally correct.
- 2:09:33Yeah.
- 2:09:33No stories, quality cars, single or limited ownership, low miles, they'll
- 2:09:39always win the day as a complete amateur to my contemporary sitting here with me.
- 2:09:45I also feel like you're saying there's no desperate bidding.
- 2:09:49Like I must own a Ferrari from this collection.
- 2:09:52Silly money is just being thrown at something to own it.
- 2:09:55It seems very deliberate what is being bought.
- 2:09:57And that's just my completely unbiased third party opinion here.
- 2:10:00You know, kind of viewing what I'm seeing unfold in front of me.
- 2:10:04I'm getting a very intentional feeling about how the bidding is shaping
- 2:10:08up here and how it's continuing.
- 2:10:09Absolutely right.
- 2:10:11And you know, there's dozens more Ferrari from this collection, but then
- 2:10:16there are pages of it in the catalog, but then we've got more collector
- 2:10:20cars and then the Bianco special.
- 2:10:23So it's interesting, you know, there's gonna be some crescendos today for sure.
- 2:10:27Five today.
- 2:10:32I feel like we are trying to really push this car up right now.
- 2:10:37Yeah, I think you're right.
- 2:10:39This is, I never thought I would see a, I mean I never thought I
- 2:10:43would see a million dollar, four 30.
- 2:10:45I'm astonished.
- 2:10:46Is it 1.3?
- 2:10:49Is there a chance, David, that the professionals in the space, you, maybe
- 2:10:55some of the critics, maybe some of the, the subject matter experts are gonna
- 2:10:59take the results from this and just, I don't wanna say discard them, but
- 2:11:03push them to the side as an anomaly?
- 2:11:05These might be outlier results.
- 2:11:07Absolutely.
- 2:11:08And, and I'll have to, when I, when I'm working on reports for motor copia
- 2:11:13is when I'm analyzing certain years makes and models, I'm going to have
- 2:11:17to be kind of measured as to how much weight I put on the, in these results.
- 2:11:21I think they're strong.
- 2:11:22I'd love to see, you know, I can't wait to see again with upcoming auctions
- 2:11:25whether or not the trend continues.
- 2:11:28So we've mentioned it before.
- 2:11:29Some of the other place markers for the market are going to be
- 2:11:32the actions that follow this.
- 2:11:34So where do you think the breaking point is?
- 2:11:37Is it going to be Monterey Car Week, where that sort of settles,
- 2:11:40if these numbers stick for the year and for maybe next year?
- 2:11:43Or is it gonna take something else to really solidify the
- 2:11:47numbers that we're seeing?
- 2:11:48I think it's gonna be, uh, an auction, uh, sort of week.
- 2:11:52I auction week thing, we're gonna have to watch Monterey.
- 2:11:56Obviously everybody's watching Amelia Island Scottsdale and
- 2:12:00you know, Paris Retro Mobile.
- 2:12:01Let's face it.
- 2:12:02Let, that's more prevalent here than ever before in North America.
- 2:12:05Monterey for sure.
- 2:12:07Monterey's gonna show whether this extends and, and endures this trend or not.
- 2:12:11That's going to be a big test.
- 2:12:13So let's talk a little bit about buyer's etiquette when it comes to these.
- 2:12:17I mean, obviously it's anybody's prerogative to do
- 2:12:19what they want with their cars.
- 2:12:20They could go drive them, they could go track them, they could put 'em
- 2:12:22in cold storage if they want to.
- 2:12:24But let's say this car shows up at Amelia in a couple of weeks
- 2:12:27and they're trying to flip it.
- 2:12:29Like, is that frowned upon in the community or does it really matter?
- 2:12:33I, I think it is actually.
- 2:12:35I think that people can spot a cynical, commercially driven decision
- 2:12:39that if it's, um, monetary as, uh, and that quick, I don't think people
- 2:12:44appreciate the flippers as much.
- 2:12:46I, I, I think there's all kinds of room for arbitrage, buy
- 2:12:50low, sell high in this market.
- 2:12:52But if it's that quick of a turn of an attempt to turnaround a, I don't
- 2:12:56think it'll happen because it a hammer because of consignment, uh, and marketing
- 2:13:01deadlines and time windows for auctions.
- 2:13:04So if any of these cars do come back to market, I would suspect it, it would
- 2:13:09only happen in, uh, Monterey or beyond.
- 2:13:15So this four 30 Scot, we were going up in $25,000 increments.
- 2:13:20I mean, it really slowed down.
- 2:13:22It was like the inside.
- 2:13:23There were two people in the room who really wanted it.
- 2:13:25Yeah.
- 2:13:26So what do you think is a grace period if you bought this car as an investment
- 2:13:30car, it's sort of like a first date.
- 2:13:32You know, how long do you wait till you call?
- 2:13:34So how long do you wait before you try to relist it in the market?
- 2:13:38Because obviously these cars are going to be followed.
- 2:13:41They're very obvious which collection they came from.
- 2:13:43That's right.
- 2:13:44That's exactly right.
- 2:13:45I think maybe Monterey would probably be an appropriate window to start
- 2:13:50attempting to market any of these cars.
- 2:13:52The prices here today and the bid interest.
- 2:13:55I think you're seeing that there's sufficient interest and sufficient value.
- 2:14:01People will try.
- 2:14:02I hate it when people do try to sell, resell something so quickly.
- 2:14:08It's a tough call.
- 2:14:09I'm hoping that enthusiasts and real collectors will pick up these
- 2:14:13cars and continue that legacy that the boman started and respect it.
- 2:14:19I'm not saying not use your car the way you see fit, but what I'm saying is these
- 2:14:24aren't just art to be hung on the wall.
- 2:14:26These are machines that were meant to either win races or establish
- 2:14:31dominance on the road and I'd like to see them used a little bit.
- 2:14:38Well, as we kind of transition here to another heavy hitter, which is gonna
- 2:14:41be the second F 40 in the collection, we do have a five 12 bbb, not A BBI,
- 2:14:46that just crossed the block at 400,000.
- 2:14:49The importance of this car, John, we talked about it yesterday.
- 2:14:51This is a Carbureted five 12, which sort of sets it apart from the other
- 2:14:55three that are in the collection.
- 2:14:57The fuel injected one.
- 2:14:58So that's the importance of this car.
- 2:15:01I mean, aesthetically it's the same as the other red one.
- 2:15:04Yeah, it's a steady evolution and it's more to do with American smog legislation
- 2:15:10than it is to do with, you know, basically smog legislation came in and, and Ferrari
- 2:15:17introduced modifications to offset that.
- 2:15:20So first, the bigger motor from the 3 6 5 model to the five 12 and then fuel
- 2:15:26injection to just clean up what was going into the, uh, into the tailpipe.
- 2:15:31Of course, for the purist, that carretta raws quite an
- 2:15:35important thing for the purist.
- 2:15:37The lightness of the 3, 6 5 versus the five 12 is a significant factor.
- 2:15:43So as we lean into this second F 40, let me recap for you guys
- 2:15:47the last one in the collection.
- 2:15:49The other one, it's twin, sold for six point.
- 2:15:52Two 5 million.
- 2:15:54So will this clock in the same, or, well, we just passed five, haven't we?
- 2:16:00Or right at five now
- 2:16:07at 865 miles as of today.
- 2:16:10And ordered new by the Bachmans.
- 2:16:13I mean, this is, it'd be interesting to see if this matches
- 2:16:16the, uh, the other example.
- 2:16:18Now, the other car had half as many miles at 456.
- 2:16:22What's that amount to a hundred thousand dollars difference?
- 2:16:25I mean, I don't know.
- 2:16:25Yeah, we're gonna find out soon though.
- 2:16:27They're both sub 1000, uh, mile cars.
- 2:16:31I, I don't think it's about the miles.
- 2:16:32I think it's that if you came in by an F 40, you've either got
- 2:16:36that F 40 or with the previous car, or you are wanting it now.
- 2:16:41I think that's what, or you're trying to build the Fab five, right?
- 2:16:442 88, F 40, F 50 Enzo and so on that line.
- 2:16:48So it'll be very interesting to see.
- 2:16:51The F 50 is not too far away either, but we are under where its twin was,
- 2:17:03I need to rev this car up a little bit though.
- 2:17:06Really get the sense of that flat plane crank V eight.
- 2:17:09I've just realized the three exhausts on civic type bars Yes.
- 2:17:15From the Air Force.
- 2:17:15Yes.
- 2:17:16Never realized that before.
- 2:17:20It was ahead of its time, John, I keep saying Huh.
- 2:17:53And you have 40 sell for 5 million, $300, a bit of a gap, but hey,
- 2:17:57what's a few hundred thousand dollars for Ferrari F 40 buyers?
- 2:18:05Oh wait, something I've never seen before.
- 2:18:06Uh, Ferrari five 12.
- 2:18:09Well, this one's A PBI, isn't it?
- 2:18:12Yeah.
- 2:18:12This is the fuel injected one.
- 2:18:17I wonder what it was about bbs that the Buckman so liked.
- 2:18:20I wonder if it was the shape or if it was the way that they drove, or quite
- 2:18:25what it was that was the attraction, or it was a moment in time where it
- 2:18:30was a Ferrari that was easy to pick up because nobody really wanted them.
- 2:18:35Right.
- 2:18:35It, it could be a child of circumstance.
- 2:18:38Yeah.
- 2:18:38There, there was a period, wasn't that 15 years ago when
- 2:18:42these were 30, 40, $50,000 cars?
- 2:18:48You know, from what I've been seeing over the, over the years in the,
- 2:18:51in the business, there were a lot of, um, wealthier professionals.
- 2:18:56Again, academics and major universities.
- 2:18:59The Chicago area especially.
- 2:19:01Uh, there seemed to be a group of professors that really liked the BBB
- 2:19:04and the BBI had a sense of adventure.
- 2:19:07Uh, some of them were pilots too.
- 2:19:09Uh, just their lives were different.
- 2:19:13Inflation was different.
- 2:19:14Wealth was different.
- 2:19:17A a working professional could aspire to and achieve a BB if they
- 2:19:22had, you know, everything in order.
- 2:19:24And, uh, it just seems like, um, now they've become, after a price
- 2:19:30drop, you know, about 20 years ago.
- 2:19:32Now they're coming back into vogue.
- 2:19:34But when you're talking about the eighties and working professionals,
- 2:19:36I mean this five 12 BB 1984 talking about hookers, it's the eighties.
- 2:19:41I mean yes, of course, world, but I mean, you, you have a lot of choices.
- 2:19:45In 1984, would you buy a five 12 BB or buy a Lotus Espree?
- 2:19:51Yeah.
- 2:19:51Or a. Sis, what are you talking about, Eric?
- 2:19:55Just because they're both wedges.
- 2:19:56They're not remotely the same car one's got a epoxy little cylinder engine.
- 2:20:00The other's got a mighty V 12.
- 2:20:02It's like, would you date a girl or a carport?
- 2:20:05Cutout?
- 2:20:08Oh, John.
- 2:20:10I mean, I'm trying to draw parallel without having to be like, oh, well there
- 2:20:14were Porsches available at the time, or there was this, or there was the Corvette.
- 2:20:17The competition for the BB would've been older cars than you
- 2:20:21could have got at great prices.
- 2:20:23Imagine the price that you could have paid for, uh, fifties Ferrari
- 2:20:27tester Rossa for something like that at the top in the mid eighties.
- 2:20:31These, at that time, you know, you could have picked up a Ferrari
- 2:20:34GTO for under a million pounds.
- 2:20:36Okay, so let's take the debate to that end, which is 1984.
- 2:20:40Ferrari Testa Rosa versus 19 84 5 12 bb.
- 2:20:43Which would you choose the new hotness or the old guard that's going out the door?
- 2:20:50Oh, I'm in the fifties.
- 2:20:51Tesa Rossa, not the eighties.
- 2:20:53Tesa Rossa.
- 2:20:59This is very interesting.
- 2:21:00This far, 3 28 GTS is actually, I believe, selling for more than the five 12 bb.
- 2:21:07That just, this is the one to watch.
- 2:21:09Here we go.
- 2:21:094 58 special.
- 2:21:12Absolutely crazy in the market.
- 2:21:14So isn't the deal with these that this is the last time Ferrari did a naturally
- 2:21:18aspirated high revving V eight, correct.
- 2:21:21The four 80 eights were turbos and then the 2 96 we got a
- 2:21:25twin turbo, six cylinder.
- 2:21:28I'm predicting over 4 million.
- 2:21:31I mean, this will break record special.
- 2:21:34A, what does that mean, ER to again?
- 2:21:37And it's getting more and more stated.
- 2:21:39You know, this is quite possibly one of the best Ferraris ever built
- 2:21:46or converter.
- 2:21:48That's why they're getting obscene money for 'em.
- 2:21:50I really like the four 80.
- 2:21:52Very nice car.
- 2:21:53Yeah, no, they're starting to game better trailer.
- 2:21:54So fresh from the, and they had, they had a great racing track record as well.
- 2:21:59They did really.
- 2:22:00And oddly enough, when they transitioned there was a period where
- 2:22:06the, they're working the bugs out of the 4 88 and the four 50 eights
- 2:22:09were running right alongside of 'em.
- 2:22:11They're just as quick.
- 2:22:12Yeah.
- 2:22:12But it's getting used to the turbo and the spool and you know, the drivers
- 2:22:16are trying to acclimate to the new car.
- 2:22:17And actually funny enough, the same thing happened in 2 96 debuted.
- 2:22:21Yeah.
- 2:22:21The 4 88 was actually quicker than the 2 96 until they worked out the
- 2:22:24problems and then it, you know, obviously they sunset the 4 88, but
- 2:22:28it's always that overlap when you see 'em in motor sport running together.
- 2:22:31You're like, is it really worth jumping to the new car yet?
- 2:22:34Yeah.
- 2:22:34Progress could be commitment financial wise, you know what I mean?
- 2:22:37Progress could be difficult sometimes, but yeah.
- 2:22:41The 4, 5, 8 saw a great, great track record across different
- 2:22:45racing bodies across the world.
- 2:22:49So the specialty, A designation that means aita, is that correct?
- 2:23:09I mean, I thought four maybe, but I thought at least three.
- 2:23:11I mean, what these things are doing,
- 2:23:15should it be colored?
- 2:23:18I don't know.
- 2:23:18I mean, the last one produced how many miles?
- 2:23:2058 miles.
- 2:23:23You know?
- 2:23:23Of course then that's a sad situation is it's such an incredible car to drive.
- 2:23:29In reality, you can't drive it.
- 2:23:30'cause then you, unless you just don't care about the money factor right, or what
- 2:23:33the investment is, you wanna go enjoy it
- 2:23:38because they had the other one that sold, they had like aspect to 1.5, 1.8.
- 2:23:42I can't remember what sold for.
- 2:23:43But this being one owner, low mile last produced everything.
- 2:23:52Alright.
- 2:23:52Countdown.
- 2:23:53Two 2,900,000,
- 2:23:57sold
- 2:24:012,000,008. Alright, we got the last three cars.
- 2:24:06So the 3, 2 8 is cost the evolution of the 3 0 8.
- 2:24:11Slightly bigger motor, slightly different grill chrome on, on the grill there,
- 2:24:16rather than black and bigger back bumpers.
- 2:24:20For my money, I prefer the earlier, smaller bumper cars.
- 2:24:24But of course you do get more creature comforts and, and generally
- 2:24:27a more just together vehicle.
- 2:24:29If you buy a 3, 2, 8 rather than your 3 0 8, I would've agreed with you.
- 2:24:33If you had, we had this debate 20 years ago, I would've said 3 0 8 all day long.
- 2:24:38Forget the 3 28.
- 2:24:39It's just bloated and big and heavy and you know, so be it.
- 2:24:43But now as I reintroduce myself to these cars with wiser and more mature
- 2:24:49eyes, I see the appeal of 3 28.
- 2:24:52I really like them.
- 2:24:53I mean, I got the chance to drive one and it was fabulous.
- 2:24:57And now, you know, if I could've different from the 3 0 8.
- 2:24:59Hmm, different from the 3 0 8 You auto crossed?
- 2:25:02Yeah.
- 2:25:04How so?
- 2:25:04How so quicker?
- 2:25:06More linear in terms of power.
- 2:25:08Also Rev happy, just like the 3 0 8, but it just, it just felt
- 2:25:12like it had more low end grunt in comparison because of the 3.2.
- 2:25:17And it was a QV right away.
- 2:25:19Right.
- 2:25:19They never had a non four valve head on the, on those cars, that four valve head.
- 2:25:24It really helped the top end as well.
- 2:25:25It did.
- 2:25:26It did.
- 2:25:26And so I enjoyed it very much.
- 2:25:28And again, if I had the money to be able to pick one up today,
- 2:25:31I would love to have a 3 28.
- 2:25:33Well this one's at, this one's at five 50, but surely you can, you can
- 2:25:37pick him up for under a hundred count.
- 2:25:39Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:25:40I'll call uh, I got Lance Stroll's dad on speed dial.
- 2:25:43I'll just call him, you know.
- 2:25:54Here we go.
- 2:25:55F 50.
- 2:25:55So these F fifties, they are, I I wasn't into them when they were new.
- 2:26:01Now I really am.
- 2:26:03It is a Formula One car, which you can drive on the road.
- 2:26:07It truly is.
- 2:26:08I just wish it looked better.
- 2:26:10I'm sorry.
- 2:26:12Compared to the F 40, it's quintessential nineties.
- 2:26:16It's very blobby and round and soft.
- 2:26:19I mean, I'm not discounting its technology or its ability capabilities.
- 2:26:23The V 12 is awesome, but it's just I can't get over the styling.
- 2:26:28Is it wrong for me to say that?
- 2:26:30It kind of reminds me of, um, those McLaren M eight styled, uh, kitty
- 2:26:34beds from the early seventies.
- 2:26:36Yes.
- 2:26:36Which I always wanted.
- 2:26:38So maybe I should aspire to one of these.
- 2:26:40Are you trying to say, it looks like the coyote from Castle and McCormick?
- 2:26:43Yes.
- 2:26:44Yes.
- 2:26:45I might.
- 2:26:45You I would be more excited except Iron and McClaren M eight
- 2:26:49that I would've Ferrari F 50.
- 2:26:53Oh man, you're tripping me back with starting at 9 million with Curry Castle.
- 2:26:57McCormick should look, we, we should, you know, as we passed 10 million
- 2:27:01here, we, we should recognize that, you know, this was a card that was
- 2:27:05developed by Michael Schumacher when Michael Schumacher and Ferraro were at
- 2:27:11their most dominant in Formula One in the DNA of those turn of the Century
- 2:27:16Formula One cars with their normal aspiration and their super high revenue.
- 2:27:21That is right there in this F 50, the F 48, and people always compare 40 and F 50.
- 2:27:28And I just think it's an absurd comparison because the F 40
- 2:27:32is a totally different car.
- 2:27:33This is a, the F 40 is like we talked about.
- 2:27:36What that is.
- 2:27:37This F 50 is a Formula one derived.
- 2:27:40It's a different kind.
- 2:27:41It is, but the problem, you can't compare them.
- 2:27:43The problem I have is if you follow the legacy of Schumacher, like you
- 2:27:46recently did on episode, this is the beginning of his career versus the
- 2:27:50Enzo, which is at the end of his career.
- 2:27:53And everybody says the enzo's a better car.
- 2:27:55So in in for my money, this car gets discounted and you fall back to the F
- 2:27:5940 because the F 40 put you it's square in the rivalry with Porsche because the
- 2:28:05question always comes up 9 59 or F 40.
- 2:28:09The F 50 doesn't have a contemporary, what is that?
- 2:28:12The Diablo?
- 2:28:13The Diablo doesn't hand stand the chance against this car and
- 2:28:16Porsche didn't have anything.
- 2:28:18The nine 11 STRASSON version doesn't really work as a comparison
- 2:28:22because that was a Homologated LMP one or GT one LAMA car.
- 2:28:27So it stands by itself with no competitor.
- 2:28:32Yes.
- 2:28:32It sounds by we know competitor and hard to find a comparison as
- 2:28:37we cruise past 11 million here.
- 2:28:40There is one car I would put up against it and I know you're gonna hate me for
- 2:28:44saying this, and that's the XJ two 20.
- 2:28:46We've had this debate before, but I would choose that over the F 50.
- 2:28:50If the XJ two 20 had a V 12, I'd be with you on the comparison.
- 2:28:58The F 50, the ask is at 11 2 50.
- 2:29:03They're counting down.
- 2:29:08I don't even like the wheels.
- 2:29:09I was just gonna throw it out there.
- 2:29:11Oh, I don't know.
- 2:29:12As it's rolled up there, I've looked at it and thought I
- 2:29:14like the proportions of that.
- 2:29:15They just, million 200 is the ask.
- 2:29:19I would definitely have an counting down 40.
- 2:29:25Ready maybe when I've matured like you have, as is typical of some
- 2:29:31Ferrari Marketplace podcast episodes.
- 2:29:33There was a slight technical snafu and it looks like we ran
- 2:29:36out of battery, but that's okay.
- 2:29:38We were one car away from the end and we cut to commercial break and we'll be back
- 2:29:43after the break with the Bianco spec.

- 2:30:28All right, gentlemen, we are back.
- 2:30:31We are moments away, moments away from the Bianco special, the main attraction
- 2:30:36of Mecca's, Kissimmee 2026 auction.
- 2:30:40And we've continued to see really strong numbers in great sell through, haven't we?
- 2:30:45We have, there's been a few Ferrari that have crossed the
- 2:30:48block since the Bachman collection.
- 2:30:50A lot of, uh, Ferrari 365, GTSs, GTVs, all those Daytona cars.
- 2:30:56And then we have one final Ferrari in the mix, 63 Ferrari, 400
- 2:31:01Super America that's coming up.
- 2:31:02So looking forward to that.
- 2:31:04And then there'll be two more cars, and then I'm sure Mecca's gonna
- 2:31:07put together just a small break.
- 2:31:10And then we will get started with our main event, which is the Bianco
- 2:31:14Speciale that we've been leading up to.
- 2:31:15So any key points that we want to make about the car as we bring our listeners
- 2:31:20back up to speed if they haven't listened to our previous episodes.
- 2:31:24Well, I was just gonna talk a little bit about the Super
- 2:31:26America that we have coming up.
- 2:31:28First of all, these were, each was an individual car that was ordered
- 2:31:34from the factory, and I think in the sixties they were two or three times
- 2:31:37more than Ferrari's standard offerings.
- 2:31:41So when we see these four 10 Super Americas come to market,
- 2:31:45we're really looking at what at the time was Peak Ferrari?
- 2:31:53Well, one of the most beautiful, uh, Ferraris ever built.
- 2:31:56And, and I believe I, I've lost count of how many individual series of these
- 2:32:00cars, but they were all, like you said, built basically to order for all the
- 2:32:05great personalities of the era too.
- 2:32:07I think, uh, Peter Sellers might have, I believe he had either had and he did.
- 2:32:11Yeah, yeah.
- 2:32:12A Man of a Thousand Faces.
- 2:32:13That's right.
- 2:32:14And the Pink Panther and Dr. Strangelove.
- 2:32:18Oh, what a movie that was.
- 2:32:19Yeah.
- 2:32:20So it's, uh, pebble Beach.
- 2:32:21Each year up the hill from where the Concor takes place, there's Kaza Ferrari.
- 2:32:27Cars, a Ferrari.
- 2:32:28They always have a display of 40 or 50 Ferrari, and, and this last year there
- 2:32:34were a couple of Super Americas, and I could, you could make comparisons between
- 2:32:38them and look at how the styling evolves.
- 2:32:41The wheels, the positioning of the chrome, the, the shape of the
- 2:32:45taillights, the shape of the headlights, the shape of the air intakes.
- 2:32:48You can really compare and mix and match and see how each individual styling
- 2:32:53element it was developed and was taken on some cars and taken off other cars.
- 2:32:58And that is very relevant for us talking about the two 50 GTO because
- 2:33:04you can talk about, you know, numbers and there being enough GTOs
- 2:33:10that were 39 built, 36 survive.
- 2:33:14The feeling is that because of the 36, there's some kind of a, you know,
- 2:33:18there's enough to make a market, but there's not so many to create
- 2:33:21excess supply and drive prices down.
- 2:33:24So that's certainly one of the reasons why they cite for the GTO being
- 2:33:28the Mona Lisa of, of automobiles.
- 2:33:30But let's be real about this.
- 2:33:32The GTO is the Mona Lisa of automobiles because of the way that it looks, because
- 2:33:37the GTO got all of those different styling cues that we see through
- 2:33:41Ferraris in the previous 15, 20 years.
- 2:33:46It had the best of those styling cues all in one place.
- 2:33:50The e type style nose, the three straights behind the rear wheels, the awesome cupe
- 2:33:55shape with a little ducktail spoiler.
- 2:33:58All of those elements came together on the two 50 GTO to really make it stand out.
- 2:34:03You know what, it didn't have John, it didn't have a trapezoidal
- 2:34:07passenger glass on a very curved car.
- 2:34:10That was one design feature that did not make it in two 50 GTO that
- 2:34:13you do see on the 400 Super America.
- 2:34:17I can't get over that piece of glass.
- 2:34:19For me, I, I see the evolution from the two 50 luso that we talked about earlier,
- 2:34:24but I just don't get that piece of glass.
- 2:34:26But it's the hough.
- 2:34:27I don't like it.
- 2:34:29It doesn't matter if the Pope invented it.
- 2:34:35Do you know?
- 2:34:36For some reason that element doesn't really come into my vision.
- 2:34:40It's just, I just love the, just the, the way that body flows from a
- 2:34:44profile and that tail end on that car.
- 2:34:48It's just, it's just beautiful.
- 2:34:49I don't know, for me, it's a magnet for my eye.
- 2:34:51It's the first thing I see because it, I don't, maybe it's my
- 2:34:55brain, but it feels out of place.
- 2:34:57So the Hoffmeister kink, John, I, I kid you a little bit,
- 2:35:00but why is that important?
- 2:35:01Why, why is, why do we need to know Hoffmeister and his kink?
- 2:35:05Well, because every modern car has it, because the way they break up the boring
- 2:35:09shape of these modern SUVs and crossovers is by doing the hofmeister kink.
- 2:35:13If you walk through any car park, you will see more cars
- 2:35:17with a hofmeister kink than not.
- 2:35:19I've never, and I don't like it on modern cars either.
- 2:35:22So now I have someone to blame.
- 2:35:24I see how this works, and now you cannot un see it.
- 2:35:29Alright.
- 2:35:29This car, I mean, a sign, the kink, call it what it is.
- 2:35:34It's beautiful.
- 2:35:35It's a beautiful car.
- 2:35:36The way it sits on the road is absolutely awesome.
- 2:35:38The, the interior designed for me is absolutely pink car interior,
- 2:35:43this area of sixties Ferrari with the, the five gauge package and
- 2:35:48the thin, the thin stick shift.
- 2:35:50I, I, I really believe interior design has never been, I love that luxury
- 2:35:56back then was defined not by how many widgets and, and, and doodads
- 2:36:00you, you had, or in the interior.
- 2:36:03It was conservatively, elegantly luxurious.
- 2:36:09And we'll never see that kind of look again.
- 2:36:12We'll never see that, that level of, of, of pre add-on optioned out interiors.
- 2:36:21And these four hundreds were fast as well.
- 2:36:23Yeah, they were, I mean, they were 150 mile an hour plus cars and.
- 2:36:27That is pretty astonishing for their sixties technology.
- 2:36:31So, uh, the car's just moved across the block here as we pass 2.3, the way
- 2:36:37the line comes off the top of the front wheel arch and extends along the fender
- 2:36:42above the bit in farina badge there.
- 2:36:44Just so awesome.
- 2:36:46Does this car act as the precursor to the 400 and the four 12?
- 2:36:54Well, in basic concept it does.
- 2:36:57You know, the two plus two, right?
- 2:37:00They were a replacement for this.
- 2:37:01Yeah.
- 2:37:02They took their design cues from the 365 GTV fours, right?
- 2:37:06Yeah, that's right.
- 2:37:08Maybe an overall essence.
- 2:37:09I I, I will have to say though that the 400 to four 12, they're the
- 2:37:14most criminally underrated Ferrari.
- 2:37:16I think there is this generation or the newer ones, in all honesty.
- 2:37:22Absolutely.
- 2:37:22So what did that hammer at?
- 2:37:23It's a 2.3 or so.
- 2:37:25Is that what we saw?
- 2:37:26Yeah, something like that, which to be honest seems a little low for, uh,
- 2:37:32400 Super America Coach Bill Ferrari.
- 2:37:35That looks that, that nice.
- 2:37:36I mean, such a lovely car.
- 2:37:38The blue, it, it's a shame that that car didn't cross the block earlier
- 2:37:42when maybe there was a little more buying enthusiasm in the room.
- 2:37:45I think so that's that.
- 2:37:47It's funny, you know, how you stage an auction and, and I wouldn't even begin
- 2:37:52to comment on how an auction of this size and volume, what goes into the
- 2:37:59decision making because, you know, there, there, and that's what makes this market
- 2:38:04interesting though, is there's, there's a chance for actually someone to jump in,
- 2:38:07buy something and if they're in it for a profit motive after a little while right.
- 2:38:12You, you do have that opportunity to arbitrage a little bit.
- 2:38:15So John, we are two cars away from the Bianco.
- 2:38:18Speciale.
- 2:38:18Do you want to kind of bring everybody up to speed on its significance?
- 2:38:23Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:38:24I mean, we said 36 GTOs bill.
- 2:38:27This one, the only white one.
- 2:38:29The whole world of GTOs is, 'cause there's only 36 people have got them any
- 2:38:36driving event that you are invited on.
- 2:38:38This is an opportunity to rub shoulders with
- 2:38:44people who you would not normally be able to rub soldiers with.
- 2:38:46So it's not just a car, it's an introduction into a
- 2:38:50very, very exclusive club.
- 2:38:52The court, the court of owls, if you will.
- 2:38:53Yeah, yeah.
- 2:38:55This particular.
- 2:38:56Car was bought by a British Jaguar dealer, and it was bought specifically
- 2:39:02in order to go racing with.
- 2:39:04And, and the guys who he had raced it were names that were very well known
- 2:39:09to the British public and subsequently even became known internationally.
- 2:39:13Soy salvadori, but more famously, Graham Hill, who, you know, the only man to
- 2:39:19win the triple crown of motor racing.
- 2:39:20And really a, a very well known figure within, uh, international motorsport
- 2:39:24in the sixties and seventies.
- 2:39:26So we are, you were talking about John Coombs as the original owner
- 2:39:32and order of this Bianca special.
- 2:39:33Yeah.
- 2:39:34John Coombs being the owner of the Jaguar dealership and being somebody who's very
- 2:39:38much in Britain associated with racing.
- 2:39:40Mm-hmm.
- 2:39:41Jaguars and always in white.
- 2:39:44He was known for racing in white and, and he was clearly well enough regarded
- 2:39:49by the Ferrari factory that when, when Coombs requested the car be painted
- 2:39:54white, it was indeed painted white, which, uh, apparently at the time was a very
- 2:39:59difficult thing to get Ferrari to do.
- 2:40:01I dare say in those days you couldn't just pick up the phone,
- 2:40:04call the factory and say, well, I wanted in white, kind of thing.
- 2:40:08It just wasn't possible to do that.
- 2:40:10And one of the things that we walked backwards into during our research and
- 2:40:14the coverage that we did on this car a couple of months ago was that the
- 2:40:18significance of the Bianca isn't necess.
- 2:40:22About the significance of a Ferrari, but its influence on Jaguar's
- 2:40:27racing history at that time.
- 2:40:29Well, absolutely.
- 2:40:30'cause John Coons was so close with the Jaguar board of directors and
- 2:40:36the, the, there is a story that he had lunch with Bill Hayes one day when of
- 2:40:40Jaguar's, uh, senior guys and, and said to them, you know, I can't race your E
- 2:40:45types anymore 'cause they're too slow.
- 2:40:47I'm gonna have to race this Ferrari.
- 2:40:49And the long and short of that meeting was this car, the Bianco
- 2:40:53spec, spent the winter of 19 62 3 at the Jaguar factory with the ideas
- 2:41:02being copied and incorporated into what became the lightweight E type.
- 2:41:09Okay.
- 2:41:09We'll put air quotes on that, John.
- 2:41:11We'll call it.
- 2:41:11It was.
- 2:41:12Studied it was being studied.
- 2:41:14So as we're getting that much closer to the car, crossing the block,
- 2:41:18Dave, you put together a meticulous analysis of where this car should fall.
- 2:41:23How are you feeling based on the energy in the room of where the car might hammer?
- 2:41:28Well, uh, as far as, uh, the room kind of thinning out a little bit, I'm not
- 2:41:33concerned about that because anybody that's in the market for a car of this
- 2:41:36magnitude and significance will probably have representatives on hand a bid for
- 2:41:40them, or they'll be on the telephone.
- 2:41:44I believe there's probably two to five, not only financially qualified bidders,
- 2:41:49but bidders that would want something like this as a crowning achievement
- 2:41:53of either the anchor or the crowning achievement of their collection.
- 2:41:57Here we go.
- 2:41:57They're running a video of the car right now.
- 2:42:00Get everybody hyped up.
- 2:42:01What do you think the opening salvo will be in terms of the bid?
- 2:42:06I think, uh, based on where things have been of over the last five years, with
- 2:42:10the few GTOs that have come to market at auctions, I'm thinking they're probably
- 2:42:14open up at about 40 or 50 million.
- 2:42:18Yeah.
- 2:42:18'cause the range, we've, the range of purse prices we've seen is 35 for a
- 2:42:24car that was considered to have a bad history and the 75 for a car that's been
- 2:42:29considered to have a, a good history.
- 2:42:31And this car does have a good history.
- 2:42:33It's never been totally restored.
- 2:42:35It's never been wrecked.
- 2:42:36It's never caused, uh, uh, been, uh, the subject of a, uh, racing
- 2:42:41accident, uh, of any magnitude and the only one in, in white.
- 2:42:47And it was run for three whole years.
- 2:42:49Uh, competitively in the uk.
- 2:42:52Here we come.
- 2:42:52Yeah, here we go.
- 2:42:54Also,
- 2:42:59the only fer.
- 2:43:04Look at that.
- 2:43:07Here it comes.
- 2:43:15What a gorgeous car.
- 2:43:16That doesn't matter what color the GTO is in.
- 2:43:19Oh my God.
- 2:43:20That's, that's art.
- 2:43:21That's not even the car anymore.
- 2:43:22Yeah.
- 2:43:23We're, this is an art auction right now.
- 2:43:25Yep.
- 2:43:25This is, this is pure art.
- 2:43:32Starting.
- 2:43:32Starting at 50 million.
- 2:43:3450. Wow.
- 2:43:36Making 40 million.
- 2:43:38So making 30 million.
- 2:43:4130 million.
- 2:43:42Making 30.
- 2:43:49The auctioneers looking for bids.
- 2:43:50Incre, we're gonna go up in,
- 2:43:56okay.
- 2:43:56They got 25, asking 30.
- 2:44:04We're at 30.
- 2:44:09So there's an awful lot of people around the block, but it's hard to see if
- 2:44:13any of the bidders are in the house.
- 2:44:1735 million.
- 2:44:19The bid is at 30 million.
- 2:44:21Looking for 35 million.
- 2:44:2830. 30 million dead.
- 2:44:3332. 31 million.
- 2:44:35Dead.
- 2:44:37Seems to have stalled out here a little bit.
- 2:44:39It has.
- 2:44:40It really has.
- 2:44:41And it's below the, the threshold of the lowest one ever sold.
- 2:44:48Well, the low is sold in in recent.
- 2:44:50This car has, yeah.
- 2:44:52Continuous.
- 2:44:52Great history.
- 2:44:57Ownership of two fame collectors, including Jack Sears, who drove this car.
- 2:45:04I feel like we're playing the price.
- 2:45:05Right, exactly.
- 2:45:08Uh, $1 Bob.
- 2:45:1033 million.
- 2:45:1333 million.
- 2:45:1532 million.
- 2:45:1733 million.
- 2:45:18Oh gosh.
- 2:45:19We've been hanging for a while now.
- 2:45:20I haven't we, my God.
- 2:45:22Is there anyone on the phone?
- 2:45:23Can we tell if there's any international bidders or phone bidders?
- 2:45:2930. Okay.
- 2:45:3130 million, 32 million.
- 2:45:35You over here?
- 2:45:3633 million.
- 2:45:38Well this will be, uh, could possibly become the bargain of
- 2:45:42the century in the, in the fer.
- 2:45:43A classic vintage Ferrari market.
- 2:45:46This is a solid car with solid history.
- 2:45:5032 now.
- 2:45:52Alright.
- 2:45:54It's not moved at all.
- 2:45:55And they're trying to whip the audience up a little bit now.
- 2:45:58Yeah.
- 2:45:58Let's see if that achieves any movement.
- 2:46:01I am literally on the edge of my seat.
- 2:46:03This is
- 2:46:0833 million.
- 2:46:10Asking 34 million million while it's moved now 34,000,030.
- 2:46:27There's always a chance this will not sell and then sell privately afterwards.
- 2:46:31Right.
- 2:46:31'cause they have, their whole bid goes on process at Mecu
- 2:46:34where you can put in a bid later.
- 2:46:36Exactly.
- 2:46:37You know, and there's a chance.
- 2:46:38An opportunity to engineer a private deal for sure.
- 2:46:43But with the presentation this has had and the history of this car being well known,
- 2:46:51okay, they have 33 5, 34.
- 2:47:02Well, it is creeping up.
- 2:47:03So does it seem like that's too bitters to you?
- 2:47:07It's hard to tell.
- 2:47:08It is really hard to tell.
- 2:47:10The likelihood of a bidder being on the phone is strong here.
- 2:47:13I mean, there is somebody on the phone with a guy in the hat that's,
- 2:47:21do we have an idea of what the most expensive car to
- 2:47:24cross the block at Mecu is?
- 2:47:25Is this it?
- 2:47:26Is this gonna set a record for them?
- 2:47:28I'd be very surprised if not.
- 2:47:31Yeah.
- 2:47:3534 we're holding it.
- 2:47:3734, you know something.
- 2:47:41He's gonna
- 2:47:44take
- 2:47:5535 million with all the, uh, all the excess liquidity
- 2:48:00in the out there worldwide.
- 2:48:04This might look back like the deal of the century,
- 2:48:09or it might be a changing of the God.
- 2:48:12Yes.
- 2:48:12It might be a movement of the guard away from racing cars from the last century
- 2:48:18and towards hypercar of this century.
- 2:48:20Yeah.
- 2:48:20Because we saw them do very, very well earlier during the Bachman collections
- 2:48:23and Enzo and the Sac car that we saw.
- 2:48:26So yes, the, the Sac 9 1 8 that we saw.
- 2:48:29Yes.
- 2:48:30They do what?
- 2:48:31Double Its two and a half million dollar estimate.
- 2:48:35I mean, this is the automotive equivalent of a Picasso, Rembrandt,
- 2:48:39a Van Gogh all roll into one.
- 2:48:43Well, and to walk away with this car at 35, this sets GTO price is
- 2:48:50significantly back, doesn't it?
- 2:48:52I mean, yeah, the weather tech guy supposedly paid 70 or 75,
- 2:48:57just three or four years ago.
- 2:48:59Yeah,
- 2:49:03this one's at 35.
- 2:49:04And it's never been wrecked.
- 2:49:07Nobody died in it.
- 2:49:08I mean, there's a lot of positives.
- 2:49:10Yeah.
- 2:49:10Lesser examples with issues, uh, have sold for more.
- 2:49:15Well, yes.
- 2:49:15'cause of course, that's the story with the $35 million car.
- 2:49:18It wasn't written so much that it had a bad history.
- 2:49:20It was that it, it was that it had virtually no history at all.
- 2:49:26Right.
- 2:49:26In that when it was born new, it was wrecked shortly afterwards.
- 2:49:31It was wrecked shortly afterwards, and the family seemed likely that
- 2:49:35it seemed to have hung onto the car for many years until Bonhams brought
- 2:49:40it to auction and sold it in 2023.
- 2:49:45Still sticking at 35, asking, we're not moving from this part 35.
- 2:49:50We are not, I mean, unless we are not getting to 40,
- 2:49:56which puts even Williams' projection pretty high.
- 2:50:03This was certainly a bold offering for Mecom Auctions.
- 2:50:06They've done amazing pre-sale marketing of this car, promotion, presentation,
- 2:50:12everything that an auction house should be doing to present a car of this magnitude.
- 2:50:18So hats off to them.
- 2:50:19They have been doing an awesome job of this.
- 2:50:21Could not agree more.
- 2:50:23Absolutely fabulous.
- 2:50:24Yes.
- 2:50:25If you were in the market for the car, for a car like this, there's no
- 2:50:28way you couldn't know it was on sale.
- 2:50:29You would know this car was on sale.
- 2:50:31Everybody's been watching this car, everybody's been talking about this car.
- 2:50:35I haven't bumped into anybody that doesn't, doesn't know that
- 2:50:37this car has been on the block.
- 2:50:39It's been up for sale for quite a while.
- 2:50:41So
- 2:50:44it seems clear then that the prices on these, it seems clear that this is a
- 2:50:50dip in price for these very high end fifties, sixties sports racing cars,
- 2:51:03racing tides don't necessarily raise all boats.
- 2:51:06And I think that's the market.
- 2:51:07There's, it's very selective.
- 2:51:09It's very stratified.
- 2:51:11This, hopefully this.
- 2:51:13Uh, high, high, high of the high end, uh, offering Will, will, will work.
- 2:51:19Uh, we've seen a lot of surprises to the upside today.
- 2:51:28Now they're giving a history lesson to get everybody tuned in
- 2:51:32and hopefully we'll see a nice, healthy bump and some aggressive bidding.
- 2:51:36A competitive bidding.
- 2:51:38Um, I'm wondering though, is it, could it be dangerous to advance
- 2:51:43market something like this as far ahead as it as it had been?
- 2:51:48Or is it good practice to do that?
- 2:51:50Because you would think that the diligence that's gone into this since about August,
- 2:51:55probably around Monterey, uh, last year.
- 2:51:58Yes.
- 2:51:59The car was at Monterey last year.
- 2:52:00My son and I saw it.
- 2:52:02Yeah.
- 2:52:02And it's.
- 2:52:03Beautiful.
- 2:52:03It's just simply beautiful.
- 2:52:05And I think with the generational money that's out there, the international money
- 2:52:09that's out there again, do you think people are waiting for the bid goes on?
- 2:52:17Is that what's happening at the moment?
- 2:52:18I'd have to wonder.
- 2:52:19I'd have to wonder.
- 2:52:21I mean, try and buy it on the block.
- 2:52:23I mean, the, the, I don't think that the bid goes on will provide a bargain.
- 2:52:28Right.
- 2:52:28It'll probably provide, again, a starting point, a starting point for negotiation
- 2:52:32with a serious, motivated prospect.
- 2:52:36But if I had to take a guess, I would guess the reserve is 50.
- 2:52:40Yeah.
- 2:52:40Yeah.
- 2:52:41I was gonna say, because at this point with some of the other cars we've seen
- 2:52:44cross the block, they would've been like, reserve is off and then people go crazy.
- 2:52:47So I guess everybody in the room kind of understands we're not at that point yet.
- 2:52:51Yeah, that's right.
- 2:52:52The car's not for sale.
- 2:52:54Yeah.
- 2:52:54It's just kicking, stalking.
- 2:52:55Yeah.
- 2:52:56Well, if somebody's out there with the money and the, and the willingness,
- 2:53:00uh, or the readiness to buy something like this, they, uh, I think they'd
- 2:53:04be well advised to do it on the block.
- 2:53:06Yeah.
- 2:53:07The, the one sort of black market against the card that when we
- 2:53:11discussed this last night is.
- 2:53:13The fact that it's right hand drive, not left hand drive.
- 2:53:17Yeah.
- 2:53:17There's like eight right hand drives, if I remember the stats correctly, and
- 2:53:21this is one of eight, however, but a right hand drive car in the States.
- 2:53:26I, to your point, John, it's not that difficult to adapt, but for a lot of
- 2:53:29people, I think it might be a point at which you just don't want to engage.
- 2:53:33Yeah.
- 2:53:33I mean, I, I personally, I I hadn't considered it as a factor until we were
- 2:53:37discussing it, but I just wonder if it is something that holds people back.
- 2:53:41Just because if you've not driven a car with, uh, you know, ears
- 2:53:45are weird back to front thing.
- 2:53:47It's not just that you place the car on the other side of the road.
- 2:53:50It's that everything is, you know, the, the shift is on the other side.
- 2:53:53You're using another hand to, to change gear and that's perhaps offput.
- 2:53:57However, for up until not terribly long ago, all 'em on
- 2:54:0224 hour cars were all right.
- 2:54:04Right hand drive, were they not, or most of them racing cars
- 2:54:06tend to be Right hand drive.
- 2:54:08That's right.
- 2:54:08There's more right hand so you can see to place the car better.
- 2:54:13That's my understanding of why they That's great.
- 2:54:14It it's also for driver changes.
- 2:54:16We talked about this before.
- 2:54:18Oh, exactly.
- 2:54:18John is, I, John and I have debate this, but guys, we're still at 35.
- 2:54:23Yeah.
- 2:54:23We, I dunno what the guys on the block are talking about whilst
- 2:54:26we're talking about this stuff, but the car is not being bid up.
- 2:54:29Yeah.
- 2:54:31And folks, we're not, we're not trying to fill air time.
- 2:54:32We're just like wondering what's going on.
- 2:54:34Yeah, exactly.
- 2:54:35Are they thinking that somebody's gonna find $35 million down the back of their
- 2:54:39seat or, or something to bid on it?
- 2:54:40There's a bag here.
- 2:54:41I don't know what's in it.
- 2:54:42Oh yeah.
- 2:54:44Where's that guy?
- 2:54:46Chat, GB t's gonna bet on this.
- 2:54:48Oh, isn't that amazing?
- 2:54:49Bitcoin's up.
- 2:54:50I'm gonna make a bid.
- 2:54:51Yeah, yeah.
- 2:54:51What's my Nvidia stock at?
- 2:54:56It's quiet in here.
- 2:54:57It's thinned out quite a bit.
- 2:54:59I'm surprised that a group of people didn't form an investment
- 2:55:02LLC and and buy something like this.
- 2:55:04Oh, sorry.
- 2:55:04Yeah, that's a, sorry to cut you off there.
- 2:55:06That's a new thing though these days, right?
- 2:55:07Where they go in together and buy something like this.
- 2:55:09Yeah, yeah.
- 2:55:09And run it, you know, as a, as a venture.
- 2:55:12But if, if we was slightly better healed, if we'd arrived there, each
- 2:55:15planet, each with 10 million that we were ready to spend, I have 50 bucks
- 2:55:19I could give you, I mean that Well, I mean, but, but if had we arrived you,
- 2:55:24we could have picked up a bargain.
- 2:55:25Yeah.
- 2:55:26Could you imagine a fractional offering of if.
- 2:55:28For to qualified bidders of say, I think the, the threshold's 200,000
- 2:55:34to own, to, to play in that market.
- 2:55:37There we go.
- 2:55:3835
- 2:55:43reserve is off.
- 2:55:44That 35 reserve was at 35.
- 2:55:47The reserve was at 35.
- 2:55:51I would've expected a far higher
- 2:55:5635
- 2:56:05final call.
- 2:56:06Third and final call at 35.
- 2:56:09Five
- 2:56:12going once
- 2:56:1835 million.
- 2:56:245 million.
- 2:56:265 million.
- 2:56:29Anybody.
- 2:56:30Those the people that are in the audience.
- 2:56:32There are a good number of people standing and a great number of people filming.
- 2:56:37Yeah.
- 2:56:38How many are bidding?
- 2:56:41That's exactly right.
- 2:56:42Need, need bidders
- 2:56:55sold at 35 million
- 2:57:00a car with this quality, that is the bargain of the century.
- 2:57:05Oh yeah.
- 2:57:05Somebody got a huge bargain.
- 2:57:07This is not gonna, sorry.
- 2:57:09So it has been a day full of anomalies.
- 2:57:11Right.
- 2:57:12We got outliers in both directions.
- 2:57:14Wow.
- 2:57:15On Unreal.
- 2:57:16This is.
- 2:57:17People will be talking about this for a long time to come.
- 2:57:20Yeah.
- 2:57:21This is significantly, I I really feel this paradigm shift that
- 2:57:25we were discussing earlier.
- 2:57:27I, I really feel like the people in the audience with the big checkbooks are now
- 2:57:32in their forties and fifties, not old.
- 2:57:35Uh, yeah, they're not, I hate to say baby, they're not interested
- 2:57:39in sixties eras, Ferraris.
- 2:57:41Like we saw some of the lower cars really not perform that well.
- 2:57:46And then if that's the case, shifting tastes, how can a car like this, this
- 2:57:50is like lust on wheels, let alone it's competitive history, who had
- 2:57:55their backside in the driver's seat.
- 2:58:00The, you know, the fact that it wasn't never totally restored.
- 2:58:04My mind is blown.
- 2:58:05Somebody's got an entry to every event they ever should care to participate in.
- 2:58:11And maybe this is a reset of that end of the market.
- 2:58:15You know, we'd be, it'll be amazing to see what happens next in the
- 2:58:19high ultra highend, uh, market.
- 2:58:21But it's, it will be because the e and had coup seems a very, very
- 2:58:25long time ago now, doesn't it?
- 2:58:27That $143 million Mercedes-Benz, that seems like quite a long time
- 2:58:32ago now, way in the rear view mirror.
- 2:58:34Yeah.
- 2:58:35Well, for the sake of our listeners, what we're gonna do is we're gonna get back
- 2:58:38together under less chaotic circumstances and do a postmortem of Mecu Kissimmee
- 2:58:44and the Ferraris that crossed the block.
- 2:58:45'cause there are a bunch of other Ferrari that we didn't cover that
- 2:58:48we are able to capture numbers on.
- 2:58:50So you'll go back to your maths there, Dave, and kind of come
- 2:58:53up with what things look like.
- 2:58:55And then we'll reset and talk about what some of the patterns
- 2:58:57look like, what it might mean for the rest of the auction season.
- 2:59:00But I cannot thank you gentlemen, enough for sharing booth time with me to, for
- 2:59:05coverage here at Mecu Kissimmee, and, uh, look forward to doing it again.
- 2:59:08Thank you very much, much.
- 2:59:12Nobody sells more than Meum.
- 2:59:14Nobody.
- 2:59:15Mecom Auctions is the world's leader of collector car vintage and antique
