- 0:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:03Chow.
- 0:04I'm Dr.
- 0:04Chi-Ming Chow, coming to you with the latest medical and health news from around the world.
- 0:10Today, we've got some important stories to cover, and we'll start off with a concerning
- 0:15incident involving students in Alberta.
- 0:20A school bus ride in Drumheller, Alberta, took a rather unexpected turn recently when a bat
- 0:26made its unexpected appearance on board.
- 0:29This led to at least three students being treated for rabies exposure after they came
- 0:34into contact with the bat.
- 0:36The incident occurred last week, and two parents have confirmed this to CBC News.
- 0:41According to an email from the Golden Hills School Division's transportation department,
- 0:45which was forwarded to CBC News, the bat emerged from a hiding spot on the bus and flew
- 0:51around as the bus was in motion.
- 0:53The school division has informed parents that Alberta Health Services will reach out to the
- 0:58families of any students who were on the bus at that time.
- 1:02Students who were not present during the incident will not be contacted.
- 1:07Tom McMillan, a spokesperson for Alberta Primary and Preventative Health Services,
- 1:11stated that health officials took immediate action once they were informed of the situation
- 1:15on May 13.
- 1:17The bus driver and any students who might have been exposed were assessed, and a small number
- 1:22received treatment for exposure.
- 1:25So far, there have been no reports of serious illness or adverse reactions among the affected
- 1:30students.
- 1:32Now, you might be wondering why this is such a big deal.
- 1:36Well, rabies is a serious viral disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear in
- 1:43humans.
- 1:44This is why any exposure to a bat, which can carry rabies, must be treated with the utmost
- 1:51seriousness.
- 1:52Even if rabies is not initially detected, immediate medical attention is crucial.
- 1:59Alan Jackson, a neuroscientist and rabies researcher at the University of Calgary,
- 2:04emphasizes that rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is the typical response to such
- 2:09situations.
- 2:11This treatment involves multiple doses of a rabies vaccine over a two-week period.
- 2:17In Alberta alone, more than four thousand people have received this treatment between
- 2:212016 and 2025.
- 2:25Historically, Alberta has seen two fatal human rabies cases since reporting began in 1924,
- 2:32both caused by exposure to bats.
- 2:34Across Canada, there have been twenty-eight fatal cases, all linked either to bats or
- 2:39exposure outside the country.
- 2:41This highlights the importance of avoiding contact with wild animals and seeking medical
- 2:46help immediately if exposure occurs.
- 2:49In closing this segment, it's a reminder of the importance of vigilance and quick action when
- 2:54it comes to rabies exposure.
- 2:57If you or anyone you know has had potential contact with a bat, it's crucial to consult a
- 3:02medical professional right away.
- 3:05We'll continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
- 3:09Stay tuned for more health news coming up next.
- 3:14In our next story, we're turning our attention to the province of Alberta, where significant
- 3:19discussions are underway about the future of healthcare.
- 3:23The Alberta Medical Association is urging the provincial government to implement strong
- 3:27oversight and workforce protections as it moves forward with a dual practice model, allowing
- 3:33physicians to work in both public and private systems.
- 3:37This dual practice model has been a topic of debate since legislation paving the way for it
- 3:42passed late last year.
- 3:45The Alberta government is currently developing regulations to put this model into action.
- 3:51However, the Alberta Medical Association has voiced concerns and shared seventy
- 3:56recommendations with the provincial government to ensure that patient safety and the integrity
- 4:02of the public health system are not compromised.
- 4:06Dr.
- 4:07Brian Wirzba, the president of the Alberta Medical Association, has highlighted the
- 4:13potential pitfalls of this model.
- 4:15He emphasizes that while there are opportunities, it is crucial to establish
- 4:20safeguards early on to prevent further strain on the already stressed public healthcare
- 4:27system in Alberta.
- 4:29The recommendations from the Alberta Medical Association aim to create a framework that
- 4:35protects patient access to care and maintains the quality of the public system.
- 4:41Among the key recommendations, the Alberta Medical Association is calling for a single
- 4:46provincial statutory oversight body that would have authority across both public and private
- 4:52healthcare practices.
- 4:54Additionally, they propose a separate, non-partisan auditing body to monitor
- 4:59compliance and address any emerging risks.
- 5:02These measures are intended to ensure that the private system does not siphon off much-needed
- 5:07staff from the public healthcare system.
- 5:11Dr.
- 5:11Wirzba points out that many Albertans are already experiencing long waits for surgeries
- 5:16and that public hospitals are facing shortages of healthcare workers, including
- 5:20anesthesiologists.
- 5:23The concern is that without proper safeguards, the dual practice model could exacerbate these
- 5:28issues by drawing healthcare professionals away from the public system, especially if private
- 5:33practices offer better working conditions.
- 5:36The Alberta government has promised that certain aspects of healthcare, like emergency
- 5:41care and cancer treatment, will remain entirely publicly funded.
- 5:45They also plan to exclude family doctors from the dual practice model initially.
- 5:50However, the specifics of the regulations are still being developed, and the Alberta Medical
- 5:55Association is keen to see their recommendations considered in these
- 5:59discussions.
- 6:01As this situation develops, it's important to keep an eye on how these changes might affect
- 6:06healthcare delivery in Alberta.
- 6:08We'll continue to monitor this story and bring you updates as they become available.
- 6:13This brings us to the end of today's episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 6:17Chow.
- 6:18Thank you for joining me, and I look forward to bringing you more health news tomorrow.
- 6:22Stay healthy and informed!
