Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hi there. Welcome back to Vanity Fair. My name is
- 0:10Speaker 1: Chris Farah. And, you know, I talk about pop culture
- 0:12Speaker 1: and TV recaps. And today I have a great guest,
- 0:16Speaker 1: one of my closest and oldest friends. And I mean old.
- 0:19Speaker 1: He's ancient. He just had a birthday. He just had
- 0:23Speaker 1: a birthday.
- 0:24Speaker 2: So we can have fun.
- 0:25Speaker 3: 97.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Oh, you guys, we're talking love after.
- 0:30Speaker 3: A long time. Years young. Years young. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No,
- 0:35Speaker 3: he is young.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Young at heart. Young, yeah, there's parts of him very young. Okay,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Relationship Rehab, season one, episode two, it's trauma bonds, like
- 0:44Speaker 1: the one I have with him. This is my friend,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Jake Poodle, of course, Reality Gaze. Hi, y'all.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Hi. Hey, honey. How are you? Hi.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I'm great. How are you? I'm fantastic. Yeah, how was
- 0:55Speaker 1: your birthday? How was everything?
- 0:57Speaker 3: It was great. I had a really great full birthday week.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I saw Sara Bareilles. Oh, okay.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And that new album, the one about everyone dying.
- 1:06Speaker 3: It's a fantastic album, and vocals were great. I had
- 1:11Speaker 3: some lovely dinners. Some lovely gentlemen companions.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 1:17Speaker 3: But not for the whole night because that wouldn't be
- 1:20Speaker 3: a birthday week.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Well, you want to sleep well.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Exactly. I'm telling you, we need to go back.
- 1:27Speaker 3: This whole thing about getting hitching up and this monogamy
- 1:31Speaker 3: thing and just getting people in general.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Go back to the animal kingdom ways. You'd like fuck
- 1:37Speaker 2: whoever you want.
- 1:38Speaker 3: To and then fuck the strongest one and he'll bring
- 1:41Speaker 3: you some more gazelle.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Bring you the best meat. And then you move on
- 1:45Speaker 2: to the next strongest one.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I like a man that brings home the bacon, gazelle, beef.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And I reward him with my body.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Exactly. What else you got? A little bit of my mind.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean, my mind.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:59Speaker 3: They don't want that. They don't want that.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I save my mind for my friends.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 2:07Speaker 2: No one wants your mind.
- 2:08Speaker 1: No, we don't want it.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Now, we all know you have the greatest podcast of
- 2:14Speaker 1: all time, Reality Gaze, with our friend Matt. And you
- 2:16Speaker 1: guys are also covering this relationship rehab show, which is amazing.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And we both got to do some promo for you.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I want you to talk about it. We both got
- 2:26Speaker 1: to interview Dr. Ish.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we didn't interview him, but we had an evening
- 2:31Speaker 3: with him. That sounds like I slept with him. That's okay. Well,
- 2:34Speaker 3: go ahead. Go ahead.
- 2:35Speaker 1: You keep talking. Just keep on.
- 2:37Speaker 3: We had an evening. We had an evening. We went
- 2:40Speaker 3: to this event, this really cool event. And it was
- 2:44Speaker 3: all couples except for Matt and I.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They thought you were.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Well, I think they thought, but there was a couple
- 2:53Speaker 3: other people who weren't a couple there, but it was like,
- 2:56Speaker 3: we made pasta and. What kind of pasta?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Penne.
- 3:01Speaker 3: We made penne pasta with our own hands.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Like freshly made pasta.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And I loved it. And it was so, and we
- 3:09Speaker 3: actually had food, real food, not like reception food, like
- 3:14Speaker 3: a charcuterie board. And, or when someone's bringing around hors d'oeuvres,
- 3:17Speaker 3: cause you never eat at these things. Like you just,
- 3:19Speaker 3: you have to, you have to go get McDonald's on
- 3:21Speaker 3: the way home or Taco Bell because no one, no
- 3:24Speaker 3: one eats anything. And, but no, we had, we were
- 3:28Speaker 3: just like sitting there and everyone, we were talking and Dr.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Ish was like saying, asking us questions about marriage. And
- 3:33Speaker 3: I was, I sat across from Justine and Michael. Um,
- 3:37Speaker 3: and it was, we, we interviewed them twice before, so
- 3:40Speaker 3: it was good just talking to them. And then I
- 3:42Speaker 3: even said, y'all, we didn't, we, I'm going to be
- 3:45Speaker 3: directly honest. We didn't think you had anything else left
- 3:48Speaker 3: to give. I thought I knew everything with the match
- 3:51Speaker 3: and shit and the nine NBA team, Nate, the nine
- 3:54Speaker 3: kids and NBA team. I thought I knew all that,
- 3:58Speaker 3: but turns out it didn't. And you're both. And I'm like,
- 4:01Speaker 3: that must've been really hard. And they talked about it
- 4:03Speaker 3: all night long. And then I ate a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 3: of Michael's cheesecake. Without really asking him. But it was
- 4:08Speaker 3: right there.
- 4:10Speaker 1: That's fine. Was Melissa and Louis there?
- 4:12Speaker 3: Nope. They weren't there.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So what couples were there from the franchise?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Just Michael and Justine. It was Dr. Ish, Michael, Justine,
- 4:23Speaker 3: and then a bunch of like podcasters and influencers and...
- 4:27Speaker 3: Not me.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I don't know why.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I actually am joking. I'm fine with it. I'm happy
- 4:33Speaker 1: I got to interview with him. And I listened to
- 4:35Speaker 1: both of you. I got to interview Justin and Michael.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So I re-listened to your interviews of Justin and Michael.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And they were great.
- 4:43Speaker 2: No, they're a great interview. They're a really great interview.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Did you know that Izzy passed away, Michael's sister?
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yes, we talked about it a little bit. He's actually
- 4:54Speaker 3: kind of distanced from his family. Um, and I think
- 4:58Speaker 3: that's one of the main reasons. Uh, so he's, yeah, he's,
- 5:02Speaker 3: he's kind of, he's pulled back, uh, mostly cause he
- 5:06Speaker 3: says there's just not a lot of support, uh, from them.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And it isn't like the way they treat his wife
- 5:12Speaker 3: and they seem to be in a really good place.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Every time I see Justine, I'm just like, she looked great.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Michael looked much better than he does on this season.
- 5:23Speaker 3: He looks rough. Yeah, I think it's like the divorced
- 5:27Speaker 3: dad look he's got going on this season and the
- 5:29Speaker 3: hair's not working for him. But no, it was a
- 5:32Speaker 3: really fun event. And like we stayed talking until like 930.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Normally I'm like jetting at like an hour because I
- 5:40Speaker 3: can't stand it anymore. But like conversations, good food. Dr.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Ish has Dr.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Ish is from Greenville, South Carolina, which is basically where
- 5:47Speaker 2: I'm from.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Oh, we talked about that. And yeah, yeah. Dr. Ish
- 5:53Speaker 3: is like a calming Zen force. He was incredible. Like I, he,
- 5:58Speaker 3: I told the, the, the, the we TV promoters or
- 6:03Speaker 3: they were there and I'm like, he's got the real
- 6:05Speaker 3: deal with him.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Like, like they don't know. They haven't had him with
- 6:07Speaker 2: like relationship bootcamp.
- 6:08Speaker 3: They're like, thanks. I'm like, yeah, that one. Watch that one.
- 6:11Speaker 3: They're like, shut up.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Did you ever watch? Cause I get, okay. I had
- 6:16Speaker 1: never watched marriage bootcamp.
- 6:18Speaker 2: No, but I I've seen clips.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's incredible. Yeah, that's the thing, Jake. I agree with you,
- 6:25Speaker 1: even though you haven't said it, but let's just say it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I didn't understand how really thoughtful, intentional Dr. Ish and
- 6:35Speaker 1: the protocol of the therapy of this particular show was
- 6:38Speaker 1: going to be, especially because we are no amateurs when
- 6:43Speaker 1: it comes to... franchises putting together a relationship sort of
- 6:48Speaker 1: therapy-esque show. And, you know, it's like BDSM, like, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: like whatever it's going to be. It's just like, doesn't
- 6:53Speaker 1: feel the same. Stupid challenges.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Surely. Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I mean, you know, like anyway, so having said that,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I also was really taken aback by how authentic this was.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And I'm really happy for everyone involved. And I think
- 7:06Speaker 1: it really brings up some great conversations. And so I
- 7:08Speaker 1: also am a big fan of Dr.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Ish. It's a fantastic show. I was not sold the
- 7:12Speaker 3: beginning because I thought, I was worried about it being
- 7:16Speaker 3: just a little, not really a downer, but I was
- 7:18Speaker 3: worried about him being preachy at the beginning. It hasn't
- 7:21Speaker 3: been that at all. It hasn't been that at all.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:24Speaker 1: No, he's has great.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 1: He's a really relatable person and great.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Let's get into it. So listen, as we know, Justin
- 7:33Speaker 1: and Michael talk fights because they are discussing with Dr.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Ish their communication problems. problems and I guess whatnot styles.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And it's not great. And, um, basically he, he, when
- 7:47Speaker 1: they have a situation, Justine wants to talk it out,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but Michael either gets overheated or overreacts in such a way.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And he will try and say something like, I need
- 7:56Speaker 1: to remove myself or I need to leave, or I
- 7:58Speaker 1: need to talk, not talk right now. And he will
- 8:01Speaker 1: exit the situation and Justine will want to talk about it,
- 8:05Speaker 1: except he doesn't want to accept that if Justine is
- 8:08Speaker 1: for any reason, also can have sex with him, he
- 8:11Speaker 1: will easily do that and then not talk. And she
- 8:15Speaker 1: doesn't understand it. And she also feels like, and if
- 8:18Speaker 1: I cry, if I'm crying in front of him, he
- 8:21Speaker 1: is hard. He's not a soft man. I need cashmere.
- 8:24Speaker 1: This man is rough. I mean, like sandpaper.
- 8:26Speaker 3: He will like yell at me and be like, why
- 8:27Speaker 3: are you crying?
- 8:29Speaker 1: It's like, why instead? Dr. Isha's like, well, Justine, what
- 8:31Speaker 1: would you like instead? And she's like, oh, I don't know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: the fucking opposite. Someone who's like, hey- I'm so sorry.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Why are you crying?
- 8:41Speaker 3: Yeah. When she says she also had a quote where
- 8:43Speaker 3: she's like, you know, it's normal for me because I've
- 8:45Speaker 3: been empty. I've never been full my entire life. I'm like,
- 8:49Speaker 3: Justine over here quoting the color purple or something. Yes.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That's what it feels like.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I've been full. I've been empty my whole life. I've
- 8:58Speaker 3: felt full. My whole life.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't know what it feels like.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I know what it feels like.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm a walking hole. That's what it is. That's what
- 9:05Speaker 1: it is.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yes. A hole that can never be filled. Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 4: I know.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I felt the same way.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I know.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And he was like embarrassed by like, don't you talk
- 9:15Speaker 1: about your gaping wound on national television and how I
- 9:18Speaker 1: don't satisfy them. But that's what it is, you know?
- 9:21Speaker 1: And like, I think you have to reframe your mind
- 9:24Speaker 1: of being so, and I get it, adverse to vulnerability
- 9:28Speaker 1: or truth or honesty as being a form of weakness
- 9:30Speaker 1: or giving up secrets about yourself as if they will
- 9:33Speaker 1: be used against you. Instead, realizing that there's a certain
- 9:36Speaker 1: power to laying your truth down.
- 9:40Speaker 3: But especially Michael and I kind of talked about that.
- 9:42Speaker 3: He's like, you know, I grew up the way I
- 9:44Speaker 3: grew up. Like, it's just, you weren't, I wasn't allowed
- 9:48Speaker 3: to have feelings. My dad didn't have feelings. Then I
- 9:51Speaker 3: went to jail. And then I couldn't do anything. I
- 9:56Speaker 3: couldn't show my feelings there, obviously. He's like, so when
- 9:59Speaker 3: I got out. Justine's like, what about my feelings? What,
- 10:03Speaker 3: what about, why can't we talk about this? Like, I
- 10:05Speaker 3: don't know how, I don't think I'm capable of that.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And so it's, it's really hard, especially with straight men
- 10:13Speaker 3: to teach them anything because there were no models for it.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So they're, you're, they're like having to learn everything.
- 10:20Speaker 1: No role models at all.
- 10:21Speaker 3: None. None.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah. So basically they go to their couple separate rooms
- 10:26Speaker 1: and it's not the Ritz Carlton.
- 10:31Speaker 3: No. Four seasons it ain't.
- 10:34Speaker 1: No, there are four seasons and they're all cold. It's
- 10:37Speaker 1: winter right now though.
- 10:40Speaker 3: LA winter.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Everyone's like, it's so cold in here and there's so
- 10:43Speaker 1: many bucks.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Y'all people think Los Angeles is always warm.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It, here's the problem. It turns like seven o'clock at night.
- 10:54Speaker 3: It is cold and it's a chilly cold and it
- 10:58Speaker 3: sneaks up on you and you're like, oh, I need
- 11:02Speaker 3: a shawl. You know what it is?
- 11:04Speaker 1: It's also kind of like this, like we are privileged, right?
- 11:07Speaker 1: And then when it's taken away from us, suddenly it's like,
- 11:10Speaker 1: what the fuck? We have been accustomed and used to something.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So it's like kind of like It's like we are all,
- 11:15Speaker 1: think of it as Californians, weather-wise, we all come from
- 11:17Speaker 1: very rich parents, okay? And our parents had been subsidizing
- 11:20Speaker 1: and giving us money. And then suddenly- One day in November,
- 11:25Speaker 1: they're like, you're on your own and it's below 50
- 11:28Speaker 1: and you've never felt the pain of being alone, cold
- 11:32Speaker 1: on your own and broke.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And you're like, oh my God. I'm in shock. It's
- 11:36Speaker 3: like how it was humid.
- 11:37Speaker 2: The humidity, like that was the same thing.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I've never been burned alive by the weather before.
- 11:44Speaker 1: People in Florida are like, that's not anything because they're
- 11:47Speaker 1: used to it. And we're like, but it's new to me.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But it's new to me.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Right. That's exactly what it is. So anyway, basically there's another,
- 11:58Speaker 1: then after people complain and Michael is one toe in
- 12:04Speaker 1: this place and eight toes trying to leave it all
- 12:08Speaker 1: the times. And he's trying, I'm sorry. And Justine's like,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you endure jail.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Yeah. You can just be in this. Weirdly, I think
- 12:19Speaker 3: this might be harder in some ways because this is
- 12:23Speaker 3: going to be Vulnerability is real hard, especially if you've never,
- 12:27Speaker 3: ever showed it your whole life. It's too vulnerable. You
- 12:32Speaker 3: feel like a weakling.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you can really shut everything out of the body
- 12:37Speaker 1: and mind and endure. But if you have to unpack
- 12:41Speaker 1: what's happening in the body and mind, it's really devastating
- 12:43Speaker 1: to have to– Yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Don't know anything about that.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We jump right into this is episode two. And I mean,
- 12:50Speaker 1: this is what's why this show is so crazy. We
- 12:53Speaker 1: jump right into a very emotional therapy session between Brittany
- 12:57Speaker 1: and Marcelino, arguably the OG couple of the entire franchise.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 1: In their conversation, he says, how can you live with
- 13:06Speaker 1: someone who doesn't respect you? And she's like, oh, I
- 13:09Speaker 1: fucking tried. I got sober. I begged.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I begged.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And basically, I was doing everything. And you were on
- 13:15Speaker 1: board until the day that you started cheating on me.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And it's like this conversation.
- 13:22Speaker 3: With Amanda. Yeah. Yeah. With her ex-girlfriend. Yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Basically, there are two cheating things that Brittany's upset with. Amanda,
- 13:31Speaker 1: her friend, with this dick pic. And then also, she
- 13:34Speaker 1: brings up the fact that Marcelino continued a conversation with
- 13:37Speaker 1: the only woman he's ever loved that came before Brittany.
- 13:40Speaker 1: And then he kept... a folder on his computer full
- 13:43Speaker 1: of nudes. And he's like, I never cheated on you
- 13:49Speaker 1: physically with her. And she's like, but you did emotionally.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And they kind of have a back and forth of
- 13:54Speaker 1: what the definition and Dr. Ish has to unpack that hardcore.
- 13:58Speaker 3: So question, if he was, if he was jerking off
- 14:03Speaker 3: to pictures of his ex before Brittany, is that cheating?
- 14:12Speaker 3: I think to Brittany it is, and to me that's
- 14:14Speaker 3: all that matters. So if one person thinks it's cheating
- 14:17Speaker 3: and the other person doesn't, I don't think you can
- 14:20Speaker 3: get anywhere. Because she was obviously hurt by it, and
- 14:24Speaker 3: that's what matters.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:26Speaker 3: But that's the part, because he says it's not cheating.
- 14:29Speaker 3: What he doesn't understand is it doesn't matter what he
- 14:32Speaker 3: thinks is cheating. It's what she feels, her feelings. That's
- 14:37Speaker 3: what he'll never learn. I don't think so.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:40Speaker 3: No.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, yeah. Like we, he can't give air
- 14:46Speaker 1: that like there's certain things that he will, I guess,
- 14:48Speaker 1: appreciate from his last girl. And, you know, I guess, yeah, it's,
- 14:52Speaker 1: he's an interesting person and he is very guarded, obviously.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And we'll talk about that. But in this conversation, Marcelino confesses,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I guess, that Brittany, I guess, hit him and has
- 15:08Speaker 1: hit him multiple times and britney was very quick to
- 15:10Speaker 1: be like yep i did and britney definitely is like
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's because of his behavior and doctor issues like oh
- 15:16Speaker 1: no no no you there's no i'm so sorry is
- 15:18Speaker 1: that your reason your justification.
- 15:20Speaker 2: For i'm glad he said that i'm glad he said
- 15:22Speaker 2: that yeah yeah.
- 15:23Speaker 1: It's pretty it's like no no you're right i should
- 15:24Speaker 1: never have hit him but at the same time what
- 15:26Speaker 1: he did like britney it's very hard for anyone i
- 15:29Speaker 1: guess to Slow down and really isolate what they're saying,
- 15:34Speaker 1: because you can have Britney be like, no, I know
- 15:37Speaker 1: I've never hit him at the same time. But what
- 15:39Speaker 1: he did was.
- 15:39Speaker 3: And it's like, no, just you can't. It's a really
- 15:45Speaker 3: slippery slope because, again, I don't want to be the
- 15:48Speaker 3: first one to say this. Swap the genders.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And we would not have the same idea.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 3: It's because she wouldn't stop talking. So I had to.
- 15:59Speaker 3: You know, it's that kind of thing. And I'm glad
- 16:01Speaker 3: he stopped her and said, DB's not okay under any circumstance.
- 16:06Speaker 3: And let's talk about it. But we find out it's because,
- 16:10Speaker 3: and he even said, Marcelino says, yeah, I moved on.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I moved on because, you know, she hit me. And
- 16:19Speaker 3: I think a switch flipped. And because as you find out,
- 16:23Speaker 3: like you're probably about to say, he was abused as
- 16:27Speaker 3: a child. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He, that's what he says.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Yeah. By his mom. Yeah. Yeah. And I don't know
- 16:34Speaker 3: if they say, do they, do they specifically say it's his,
- 16:36Speaker 3: his mother or a female relative?
- 16:38Speaker 1: You know what they say? Female. They say this, he
- 16:40Speaker 1: was abused at 13. It was a male or female
- 16:42Speaker 1: as a female. And he just, you know, remembers trying
- 16:45Speaker 1: to like, you know, bear it until I could get over.
- 16:47Speaker 3: With, you know, and maybe a grandmother and aunt, I
- 16:50Speaker 3: don't know, but so it was, it was something. It
- 16:52Speaker 3: could be anyone. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 1: But obviously female. And she says that she didn't know
- 16:56Speaker 1: to the extent of that. And at this moment, Marcelino
- 17:00Speaker 1: says it out loud. And then, you know, he starts
- 17:01Speaker 1: to sort of like hear that this came out and he,
- 17:04Speaker 1: I mean, and it's obviously taking him down and Dr.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Ish comes over to, yes, comfort him. And you literally
- 17:13Speaker 1: see Marcelino.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Being like, oh, I don't know.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I don't need that.
- 17:16Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no. I know. That was so crazy.
- 17:19Speaker 1: He's like, yeah, I don't need no sympathy, man. And Dr.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Ish is like, no, it's not about sympathy. It's about
- 17:26Speaker 1: Having it be confirmed and validated that you experienced something
- 17:31Speaker 1: that no one should and that it affected you and
- 17:35Speaker 1: continues to affect you. And then Marcelino goes, no, actually,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm straight.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah. And then Dr.
- 17:44Speaker 1: It's just like, did you watch that? See that?
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah. Now he's back inside. And it was it was
- 17:49Speaker 3: so good. I have never understood this couple as much
- 17:53Speaker 3: as I have after watching. And I should mention I'm
- 17:58Speaker 3: like on we just finished episode five. So there's even
- 18:02Speaker 3: more than this. And now it's all clear to me
- 18:08Speaker 3: because I understood Brittany because we had so much of
- 18:11Speaker 3: their backstory of hers, especially. And but now I understand everything.
- 18:17Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, like, the drama with him sending Amanda dick pics
- 18:22Speaker 1: or whatever, like, I guess... Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I know.
- 18:25Speaker 1: When it came... It was that season. There was something
- 18:29Speaker 1: contrived about it. Like, I didn't believe it. I was like, oh,
- 18:31Speaker 1: how convenient. It's, like, her lesbian friend that she kind
- 18:34Speaker 1: of hooks up with that you're going to, like, you know, like,
- 18:36Speaker 1: send dick pics to. Like, because in my mind, I guess,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it was like, well, that's not fucking believable that, like,
- 18:41Speaker 1: you would throw your relationship away to one person who's
- 18:46Speaker 1: obviously going to... it's going to come back around.
- 18:50Speaker 3: There's other people in this town.
- 18:51Speaker 1: So to have that moment and be, feel like this
- 18:55Speaker 1: isn't real. And then to be here, I'm like, well,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I guess it was like, I mean, I, yeah, maybe
- 19:00Speaker 1: they're just small town peas or not on people in
- 19:02Speaker 1: their circle. I guess that's what happened.
- 19:04Speaker 3: It's the betrayal of it all because it's, it's, it.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Basically is Brittany.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Actually.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I think she was afraid that Marcelino was getting bored.
- 19:15Speaker 2: That's why they brought in Amanda. I also think she
- 19:17Speaker 2: wanted to have her cake and eat it too.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Um, and I think she's always known that Marcelino preferred monogamy.
- 19:27Speaker 3: And I think that.
- 19:29Speaker 2: I honestly believe this is, this is what happens in marriages.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I think you get married to one person, you think
- 19:34Speaker 3: it's someone else and there, there was a certain type
- 19:37Speaker 3: of person. And then you realize four years down the road,
- 19:40Speaker 3: either it's not this person or you grew different.
- 19:44Speaker 2: You became different. You know, she wasn't, she was in prison.
- 19:49Speaker 3: She and then. and she became a different person and
- 19:52Speaker 3: then she was so you're not gonna really show who
- 19:53Speaker 3: you are until like the second year of marriage and
- 19:57Speaker 3: then you're trying to deal with the loss of the
- 19:59Speaker 3: person you thought you had so it's a mess that's
- 20:04Speaker 3: why i've been married 11 times and uh we'll see
- 20:07Speaker 3: steven's mom Oh God, what a nightmare. I will say
- 20:13Speaker 3: this one time, just a preview for a hunt for love.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I can't believe that Steven has might've been the least
- 20:18Speaker 3: problematic man this season. I did not expect that.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Nope. No, I certainly it's crazy. What a crazy situation.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Fucking boy scout compared to the rest of them.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I know, I know it. But yeah, Hunt for Love
- 20:33Speaker 1: is crazy. 90 Day Fiancé is crazy. Everything is crazy.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But okay, this episode, if it wasn't called Trauma Bonds,
- 20:38Speaker 1: which I do get, it could be called two other things.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I feel like it could have two other titles. One
- 20:42Speaker 1: would be Everybody Loves Louis. Yes. Every in the morning,
- 20:46Speaker 1: Louis is like, I got up. I got up.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I worked out.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I made everyone fucking smoothies. I mean, you know, he's
- 20:52Speaker 1: a delight. Everyone like from Marcelino is like, man, I
- 20:54Speaker 1: wish I went to high school with Louis. You know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: people are like, I fucking, we love Louis so much.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And Melissa's got to be kinder to her. I know.
- 21:04Speaker 3: She's just, you know, I really do believe that she,
- 21:12Speaker 3: I actually asked Justine Michael and I'm like, what's she
- 21:14Speaker 3: like on camera? She's like kind of exactly who she
- 21:17Speaker 3: is on camera. She's like, she'll get a little bit better,
- 21:20Speaker 3: but she came in really guarded. She's hard. She's got
- 21:25Speaker 3: a tough exterior and she's gruff. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 1: No, I like her. There's a moment in episode two
- 21:33Speaker 1: where she's like, get your hand off my hair. And
- 21:34Speaker 1: he's like, it's not on your hair.
- 21:37Speaker 3: She's like, get your hand off my hair.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I'm not touching your hair, you know? And then you
- 21:42Speaker 1: see him look at the producers like, this is every day.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Something went wrong. Like, that type of physical touch thing, like,
- 21:52Speaker 3: something went wrong to her. I don't know what it was.
- 21:56Speaker 3: I doubt we're going to hear about it this season. But...
- 22:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. The truth about that situation is that
- 22:06Speaker 1: it's interesting that she finds his physical touch still so jarring,
- 22:12Speaker 1: someone that she has known her entire life, that she's
- 22:16Speaker 1: been with now for a long time, that, like, she
- 22:18Speaker 1: was obsessed with at one point. Like, we remember that
- 22:23Speaker 1: she was obsessed with him when he was in prison. Like,
- 22:28Speaker 1: she would go, right? Like, she's had a marked difference,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and I don't know if it was, like, the teeth and, like,
- 22:35Speaker 1: her nose. I don't know, like, what had him down, but, like.
- 22:37Speaker 3: It kind of makes sense because... All her love.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Of him was in her nose. That part that was
- 22:42Speaker 1: taken away.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That's true. And now it's gone.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I know.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Now it's filed off. Well, I think it was because
- 22:48Speaker 3: idealizing him in like that high school sort of way
- 22:52Speaker 3: made a relationship that had no intimacy, no physical intimacy.
- 22:56Speaker 3: So it was kind of idealized. And then when she
- 23:00Speaker 3: came home, she wanted it obviously, but there's, there's a problem.
- 23:05Speaker 3: There's a problem she's having with physical intimacy that, probably
- 23:09Speaker 3: isn't going to get resolved on this show.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I can't, I can't imagine her opening up about it.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I don't see it. Um, but who knows?
- 23:14Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 23:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 1: She calls Louie like toxic positivity. Ouch. I know it
- 23:23Speaker 1: is like, um, The couples are starting to bond a
- 23:28Speaker 1: little bit. They talk about not really having a lot
- 23:30Speaker 1: of friends, you know, or hanging out with people much,
- 23:32Speaker 1: either because people's, like, shared group circles don't really mesh
- 23:35Speaker 1: or whatnot.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And, you know, specifically Kim's like, yeah, like, my friends
- 23:40Speaker 1: don't really want to hang out with him. And Joey
- 23:42Speaker 1: lets loose that, like, yeah, and he, you know, had
- 23:44Speaker 1: to cut off his family. And she's like, oh, why, Joey?
- 23:47Speaker 1: Why do you have to cut off your family? He's like,
- 23:48Speaker 1: I don't really like to talk about it. She's like, no, why?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Why do you cut off your family? He's like, it's
- 23:52Speaker 1: because I stole 90 from my grandma. 90. 90.
- 23:59Speaker 3: That's not bad.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It's 90 dogs. Yeah. He's like thousand.
- 24:04Speaker 3: 9,000. I stole $ 90, 000.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I stole $ 90, 000. Michael loses his mind over this. Like,
- 24:12Speaker 1: he's like, what? That's crazy, man. It just seems like,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and you try to pass it off as saying only $ 90.
- 24:18Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, but there was $ 400, 000 in the account.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I could have taken all that. And then when he
- 24:24Speaker 1: says that, like, I took only $ 90. Like, it is,
- 24:27Speaker 1: people are dying over it.
- 24:30Speaker 3: I left her $ 310, 000.
- 24:33Speaker 1: She loved me. She should leave it to me in
- 24:36Speaker 1: the will now because it's a good Samaritan. And a
- 24:39Speaker 1: good grandson.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I just love it that country people have all this money.
- 24:44Speaker 3: That's the weirdest thing. They've got it stored up in
- 24:47Speaker 3: their family.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Oh my God, yeah. All her life savings from her husband.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Totally agree. I don't know, but her whole life, yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 3: We often think that country people are dirt poor, though.
- 25:00Speaker 3: But I know... You think about Matt's aunt, not Aunt Darla,
- 25:07Speaker 3: but Aunt Peggy. Peggy, she'll say, she's a millionaire because
- 25:11Speaker 3: of how much she's saved, how much money she's saved.
- 25:14Speaker 3: But I have distant relatives, and they live way up
- 25:17Speaker 3: on the mountain, and they don't come down. They physically
- 25:20Speaker 3: don't come. Someone brings them shit up on the mountain.
- 25:24Speaker 3: They don't even name the mountain.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Someone has to bring up a name for it.
- 25:31Speaker 3: So they literally.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Someone just brings them shit way the fuck up there.
- 25:35Speaker 3: And one of them died. It's like a distant cousin
- 25:38Speaker 3: of my father. No, they drive. There are roads. They're
- 25:42Speaker 3: gravel or dirt. And they, someone had to bring, and
- 25:47Speaker 3: my dad's, it was like a second or third cousin.
- 25:50Speaker 3: They found like, it was this ridiculous amount of money,
- 25:55Speaker 3: like $ 500, 000 in her like one room shack. It was crazy.
- 26:05Speaker 3: It was all money. All cash. Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I don't know where it went.
- 26:13Speaker 4: No.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Could have thrown her a hell of a funeral.
- 26:16Speaker 1: People don't trust banks.
- 26:18Speaker 3: No, not where I am.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Put in a mattress. Put underneath the mattress. Dig a
- 26:24Speaker 1: hole and put it in there and treasure for your
- 26:26Speaker 1: grandkids someday. Don't give away my secrets.
- 26:28Speaker 3: No.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Oh, so basically after this, uh, you know, great fun time,
- 26:39Speaker 1: we have the doctor ish. Uh, workout, I guess, uh,
- 26:45Speaker 1: psycho psychological exercise, and it's really a band workout. Ha
- 26:49Speaker 1: ha ha. It's good.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Um, But Dr.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Ish is like, we're going to talk trauma today. And
- 26:55Speaker 1: he's like an LA distressed sweater. He has great fashion.
- 26:59Speaker 1: His fashion is very interesting. The pearl bracelets.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Did you see those pearl bracelets? He was wearing the
- 27:04Speaker 3: pearl bracelets at the event. And he is, I don't
- 27:08Speaker 3: think he'll mind saying this.
- 27:10Speaker 1: He is a straight man.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I'm not outing him as straight. I think it's assumed.
- 27:16Speaker 3: And he has a female companion, I believe. I'm not
- 27:19Speaker 3: saying it like, shh, he's straight.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I think he's straight.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I just don't want to say it. Because both of
- 27:27Speaker 3: us would just go, because I'm kind of afraid you
- 27:29Speaker 3: would go, oh, that's sad. Or something like that.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Present company. We just know gay people. But no, he
- 27:40Speaker 3: had those bracelets, those pearl bracelets on. And I was like,
- 27:44Speaker 3: those are amazing. He's like, I got to love me
- 27:46Speaker 3: some bling. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 1: You just don't see pearls, you know, on it.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Well, you see gay guys wearing those ironic pearl necklaces,
- 27:58Speaker 3: but now you always see it.
- 28:01Speaker 2: So it's not even interesting anymore.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 3: No, I know.
- 28:07Speaker 1: But like, you know, cause at a very, yeah. And
- 28:08Speaker 1: like a poils for the goyles kind of way, you know, straight.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Men are wearing them too. And I'm like, I don't
- 28:13Speaker 3: think y'all can do that.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I'm like so old school that like, there's a moment
- 28:19Speaker 1: where I always see the pearls. I'm like Jackie O.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And so I'm like, you know, like it's interesting, but
- 28:23Speaker 1: I like it.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Now pearl earrings. Now that would be interesting. Can you
- 28:27Speaker 3: imagine this gay guys working around with pearl earrings?
- 28:29Speaker 1: Drop pearl earrings.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 28:33Speaker 3: I do love it. Teardrop pearls.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Teardrop pearl earrings.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 1: That's what I'd like to see.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Honey, like wedding day.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Or full on Wilma Flintstone wedding. Like big fake pearls.
- 28:48Speaker 3: That I'd like to see.
- 28:49Speaker 1: One big ass chunky pearl. Yes. Like a conch shell,
- 28:53Speaker 1: like a conch pearl shell. Yeah. I like that stack
- 29:00Speaker 1: of bracelets that he wears.
- 29:01Speaker 3: It makes me really happy.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Basically, he separates the felons from the non-felons. It's very obvious.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Brittany's like the only non, the only felon that's female.
- 29:09Speaker 1: So she's like, bye. I felt bad for Marcelino too.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I mean, I would have, but he was having the
- 29:14Speaker 1: time of his goddamn life.
- 29:16Speaker 3: He was. He was loving the girl talk.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I know.
- 29:18Speaker 3: He was getting the tea, as they say.
- 29:20Speaker 1: He was. He instigates the game. He's like, Melissa's like,
- 29:24Speaker 1: so Marcelino was like, let's play this game. We're going
- 29:27Speaker 1: to play like basically like questions.
- 29:28Speaker 3: We're going to play questions and answers. That's my Marcelino.
- 29:34Speaker 1: It's pretty good. Yeah, it's really good.
- 29:35Speaker 3: You just have to narrow your voice and use about
- 29:37Speaker 3: 10 words more than you'd necessarily would ever use. Yeah,
- 29:42Speaker 3: and uses like 10 more words than he needs to.
- 29:45Speaker 3: It's just... I don't think Brittany would tell me that her.
- 29:51Speaker 1: The meaning, it's like, yeah, it's like a very like, yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 1: he's like a very.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So narrow. It's so funny. He's such
- 30:02Speaker 3: a strange person. Like now I know a lot more
- 30:06Speaker 3: about him because this is someone who had a career
- 30:09Speaker 3: in the military.
- 30:10Speaker 1: I believe that.
- 30:12Speaker 3: And got out. And it's obvious now why he got
- 30:15Speaker 3: a career because he didn't have to– he did not
- 30:18Speaker 3: have to share anything. He learned how to be a
- 30:21Speaker 3: harder individual. And so everything in his life now makes
- 30:27Speaker 3: sense now that we know a lot about him. It's
- 30:29Speaker 3: really interesting. This show has made a lot of things
- 30:32Speaker 3: click for me, for people I didn't know.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And also makes you realize that no one is doing
- 30:41Speaker 1: the amount of trauma and therapy that they should be
- 30:45Speaker 1: doing across the board to have, A, functional relationships for themselves,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and B, if they are parents, in order to raise
- 30:54Speaker 1: children that can understand how to communicate well and from
- 31:00Speaker 1: what place. Like, and I mean that, like, I think
- 31:02Speaker 1: that the show is like, sure, like there are people
- 31:05Speaker 1: that we've watched that have had hard lives and have
- 31:07Speaker 1: criminal pasts, but the show also is like the ultimate
- 31:11Speaker 1: leveler that everyone experiences at some point trauma, usually in
- 31:16Speaker 1: their childhood that informs who they are presently and like
- 31:20Speaker 1: has resonant impacts on their relationships. And that unless you
- 31:25Speaker 1: have done intense work or understand that like on the
- 31:31Speaker 1: whole society and civilization americans we don't do it and
- 31:34Speaker 1: so we are just walking around kind of like oh
- 31:37Speaker 1: like basic you know wounds that are barely healed and
- 31:41Speaker 1: are waiting to get picked again just to like bleed
- 31:43Speaker 1: out you know kind.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Of waiting for my scab to heal over waiting for
- 31:48Speaker 3: it to waiting for it to get dry and crusty.
- 31:51Speaker 1: And i think that like yeah yeah And I think
- 31:55Speaker 1: that the more that we kind of really understand and
- 31:58Speaker 1: sit with that are, like, the moments that we see
- 32:01Speaker 1: people freak out in life when we have, like, hardened
- 32:06Speaker 1: or unempathetic or judgmental and or reactive reactions to it, like,
- 32:12Speaker 1: that it affects us. We can really try and disconnect
- 32:17Speaker 1: and approach situations with, like, curiosity. Like, someone... if someone's
- 32:22Speaker 1: screaming at the top of their lungs, like in a
- 32:24Speaker 1: road rage accident, surely I don't want to fuck with them.
- 32:26Speaker 1: But also I realized that like, who the fuck knows,
- 32:29Speaker 1: you know, what that person has.
- 32:30Speaker 3: What their story is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's
- 32:33Speaker 3: also these people, a lot of these people are just
- 32:36Speaker 3: at their bottom. A lot of these people have nothing
- 32:38Speaker 3: left to lose. So it's the, it's the best time
- 32:42Speaker 3: for them to act. They have nothing that would no
- 32:44Speaker 3: way out except to go through it. So they've been
- 32:48Speaker 3: told that their, their person, their partner is going to
- 32:50Speaker 3: leave them. So they can't be alone, and this is
- 32:54Speaker 3: the only way out. So I think that's especially a
- 32:57Speaker 3: way for Michael because he wouldn't do this if he
- 33:01Speaker 3: didn't have to.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, which I think is also interesting that they really
- 33:06Speaker 1: talk about the recitivity.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Recidivism. Recidivism. Recidivism. Why can't I say that? Say that
- 33:13Speaker 3: like Marcelino. Recidivism. Recidivism. Recidivism.
- 33:19Speaker 1: God, your Marcelino is so good. I didn't realize it.
- 33:23Speaker 3: The quality of a recidivism is tough in this society.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Jesus.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So after that, this is the exercise. It's basically people
- 33:32Speaker 1: go into a little tent room, kind of like a
- 33:36Speaker 1: circus tent.
- 33:37Speaker 3: A yurt.
- 33:38Speaker 1: A yurt.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Which is a word I hate. A yurt. A yuck.
- 33:42Speaker 3: A yurt.
- 33:43Speaker 2: A yurt.
- 33:43Speaker 4: A yurt.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It hurts me when I hear the word yurt.
- 33:47Speaker 3: It hurts when I hear the yurt.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I don't want to hurt yurt.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Mel Brooks.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Absolutely. There's the bands everywhere. And basically he introduces a
- 33:58Speaker 1: man named Mr. Yusuf Dahl, who says that he is
- 34:02Speaker 1: there to change laws that are unjust for inmates and
- 34:07Speaker 1: that he himself has a past where he's been incarcerated,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and then he was incarcerated again and sold drugs, and
- 34:13Speaker 1: he got out and started a business and went to school.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And so there is hope if you can name your demons,
- 34:21Speaker 1: if you will. So what has to happen first is
- 34:24Speaker 1: for people to look and see words that they relate
- 34:28Speaker 1: to in some way. They take down the ban, and
- 34:29Speaker 1: then they have to sort of come to grips with
- 34:31Speaker 1: why this word triggers them or relates to them or
- 34:36Speaker 1: makes them feel like they want to grab it and
- 34:39Speaker 1: all the people grab lots of bands. I mean, you know,
- 34:41Speaker 1: it's almost like Mardi Gras beads at the end of like,
- 34:44Speaker 1: you know, a very good night, you know what I'm saying?
- 34:46Speaker 3: It's like a fire sale. Everyone's just grabbing everything they can.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Like there's, and so we get,
- 34:54Speaker 1: you know, people discussing some of the things that have
- 34:57Speaker 1: happened over their lives. For instance, Louis quite quickly starts
- 35:02Speaker 1: talking about being in prison for 10 years. And in fact,
- 35:05Speaker 1: that it, that happened in, In a way where it
- 35:08Speaker 1: actually saved him because it A, kept him off the streets,
- 35:14Speaker 1: but also it made him into this person that was
- 35:19Speaker 1: sort of like a jail manager where people would come
- 35:22Speaker 1: to him for either advice or problems. And he became
- 35:27Speaker 1: known as like a helper. And I think that it
- 35:30Speaker 1: gave him confidence.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Responsibility.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yep. quite quickly dr ish is like what are some
- 35:37Speaker 1: of the things that you uh that you missed while
- 35:40Speaker 1: being in prison that you you know have regrets over
- 35:43Speaker 1: and he i mean very quickly says his son and
- 35:46Speaker 1: can't you know hold back from emotional outburst of how
- 35:49Speaker 1: sad that is for him he just says that he
- 35:50Speaker 1: doesn't have a relationship with his.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Pretty crier it's a pretty crier.
- 35:54Speaker 1: God i feel so bad for louis in this moment
- 35:56Speaker 1: yeah his son was like four.
- 35:59Speaker 4: And then he was 14 yeah yeah yeah so he's
- 36:03Speaker 4: like yeah he said i uh he had to, uh,
- 36:07Speaker 4: he basically later on, he talks about, you know, he,
- 36:11Speaker 4: he's still there for him now, but he's, he can't hate,
- 36:14Speaker 4: he still wants to be closer to his son, but yeah, missing,
- 36:17Speaker 4: missing 10 years of your kid's life.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's formative years too.
- 36:22Speaker 3: For tender years, the, the, the children of a tender age.
- 36:27Speaker 1: That's true. The tenders.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Cody Brown's the Honey, you don't cover that, but I do. No, no,
- 36:32Speaker 3: I don't watch that show.
- 36:33Speaker 1: You want to come and talk about it?
- 36:34Speaker 3: Oh, you don't watch it? I don't watch this season.
- 36:36Speaker 3: I don't watch this season, no.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 36:38Speaker 3: People are saying that.
- 36:40Speaker 1: It's so, because now, because it was like this, it's
- 36:42Speaker 1: like once Christine, it's like everyone's like, once Christine leaves,
- 36:45Speaker 1: people were like, wait, people, they were like, we can leave?
- 36:48Speaker 1: And then people left and they were like, that's crazy.
- 36:50Speaker 1: We can have our own lives and like have our
- 36:52Speaker 1: own opinions.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Do we need Cody?
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and then now Cody's not even on the show.
- 36:56Speaker 1: And so they're like, wait, We can just say whatever
- 36:59Speaker 1: the fuck we want.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Because we don't even see him anymore.
- 37:02Speaker 1: We don't even see this person anymore. We have no
- 37:05Speaker 1: ties to him. Our kids hate him and we have
- 37:06Speaker 1: no money ties and he's an asshole and everyone knows that.
- 37:10Speaker 3: It's the ultimate breaking of the patriarchal cycle that took
- 37:14Speaker 3: 20 something years to break.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Mary is crazy. Yes, Jake, you have to watch it.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Mary is crazy.
- 37:21Speaker 2: I'll go back and I just enjoy Mary's multiple MLMs.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 37:27Speaker 3: The grips.
- 37:28Speaker 1: She, this last episode, she's like, you know what? Now
- 37:31Speaker 1: I'm just going to, I've been speed dating every month
- 37:33Speaker 1: and I'm going to go stay dating in different cities
- 37:34Speaker 1: so I can see where I want to move. I'm
- 37:35Speaker 1: going to speed date in San Francisco. And I found
- 37:37Speaker 1: that to be, I can't.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Even like, you just need to settle down with a
- 37:43Speaker 3: female golfer. Uh, I just don't know why you're trying. You're,
- 37:47Speaker 3: you're such a perfect lesbian. I, yeah. Yeah. Sounds like, um,
- 37:54Speaker 3: It's like a holiday, a Hallmark movie for the holidays.
- 37:57Speaker 1: The perfect lesbian.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 38:01Speaker 3: The perfect Christmas lesbian.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Yes. Oh, that's really beautiful. That's what Joseph L. Smith wants.
- 38:10Speaker 1: One of his last followers to turn gay.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 38:14Speaker 1: For Christmas. Anyway. So that's that. Of course, Brittany talks
- 38:20Speaker 1: about being on her own. Brittany dealt with a lot
- 38:22Speaker 1: of issues. She had to leave, She basically was on
- 38:25Speaker 1: her own at 12. She gets turned out, she says,
- 38:27Speaker 1: by a man who's much older than her, gets her
- 38:28Speaker 1: hooked on drugs. He's really sexually violent towards her. And
- 38:32Speaker 1: obviously they're on drugs. She's pregnant. And she says that
- 38:36Speaker 1: she can't believe that she got herself out of that
- 38:41Speaker 1: situation and came back with an open heart, ready to
- 38:45Speaker 1: be in a new relationship. And she really prided herself
- 38:49Speaker 1: on not bringing what she thought was that baggage to
- 38:52Speaker 1: this new relationship. However, when the betrayal happened from Marcelino,
- 38:57Speaker 1: it felt even stronger because she felt like she had
- 39:03Speaker 1: gotten past so much just to be, you know, betrayed,
- 39:09Speaker 1: which is a hard one.
- 39:11Speaker 2: I think this, she, she's done a lot of work
- 39:14Speaker 2: on herself.
- 39:14Speaker 3: I totally agree. There is a kind of idea, uh,
- 39:20Speaker 3: You see this sometimes with people in recovery who are
- 39:23Speaker 3: with people who are not in recovery of saying, you
- 39:26Speaker 3: don't know how much work I've had to do on myself.
- 39:29Speaker 3: and obviously you haven't done as much. So there's this
- 39:32Speaker 3: idea of not wanting.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I'm better than you.
- 39:37Speaker 3: It's that, not that bad. But what she's saying is
- 39:41Speaker 3: she does not realize how much from her previous relationship
- 39:44Speaker 3: that she's brought to this or her previous life. She
- 39:49Speaker 3: can't see that. And so it's, it's interesting. I think you'll,
- 39:53Speaker 3: you'll see it even more in, in future episodes.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Because the truth of the matter is like, if
- 40:00Speaker 1: Brittany can admit that she has hit Marcelino, then you
- 40:03Speaker 1: can admit that you probably didn't just bring that trauma.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Yep.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Yep.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Yep.
- 40:09Speaker 1: And also you probably had other trauma. I mean, you know,
- 40:11Speaker 1: you don't know.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 40:13Speaker 1: You're absolutely right. Um, so, um, At the same time,
- 40:18Speaker 1: of course, people are having fun with Marcelino. Julius talks
- 40:22Speaker 1: about the poverty that he had to deal with and
- 40:25Speaker 1: being in Section 8 and EBT and how he felt
- 40:29Speaker 1: maybe that there was no viable option but to go
- 40:33Speaker 1: from that kind.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Of- To the streets.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Yeah, right, to the streets. You're going to sell drugs.
- 40:38Speaker 1: You don't have money anyway. So if you don't have money,
- 40:42Speaker 1: you're given the chance to get money. What the fuck?
- 40:44Speaker 3: I know. I asked Dr.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Ish.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I said, what is Julius? I'm like, he's like, he's like,
- 40:49Speaker 3: let me tell you. It's like, I even thought is
- 40:52Speaker 3: something wrong with him? Like, is he like developmentally delayed?
- 40:56Speaker 3: Like that was what Dr. Ish thought. And, and like,
- 40:59Speaker 3: he's like, he is so shut down. He's like, also
- 41:03Speaker 3: it's like, do you see the picture of his mugshot?
- 41:05Speaker 3: He's like, that kid is a beautiful kid walked into prison.
- 41:09Speaker 3: You can imagine what happened at 19. And he's like,
- 41:12Speaker 3: that's why he had to put tattoos on his face
- 41:15Speaker 3: to make himself ugly. And I was like sitting here
- 41:18Speaker 3: listening to Dr. Ish going, holy fuck. Look what that
- 41:22Speaker 3: kid had to go through.
- 41:24Speaker 1: That part, Jake, I guess I wonder. I'm up to
- 41:27Speaker 1: episode four. And like the sexual trauma of what could
- 41:31Speaker 1: happen in prison, especially men prison or whatever. I mean,
- 41:35Speaker 1: I'm not saying it doesn't happen in prison. I wonder
- 41:38Speaker 1: if they're going to talk about that.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Especially a 19-year-old. Are they going to talk about that,
- 41:42Speaker 3: do you think? Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Not that I've seen in episode five. Julius is a
- 41:49Speaker 3: tough nut to crack because he's just, I don't know.
- 41:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 41:53Speaker 3: It's the kind of thing where you're in prison for
- 41:55Speaker 3: six years. And also remember, no one came to visit
- 42:00Speaker 3: him when he was in prison. The only person was Alexis.
- 42:05Speaker 3: His family didn't go see him, anything. I can't even.
- 42:09Speaker 3: That's so sad. How does your soul... survive no knowing
- 42:15Speaker 3: that no one out there is even gives cares if
- 42:19Speaker 3: you live or die um and so i kind of
- 42:23Speaker 3: understand it why he he's completely shut down oh anyway
- 42:30Speaker 3: i know yeah that's it.
- 42:33Speaker 1: That is yeah it's really really hard uh he's also
- 42:36Speaker 1: says Which makes sense. Alexis is his first relationship. So
- 42:40Speaker 1: when Alexis is mad at him or whatever, he wishes
- 42:43Speaker 1: that she would understand that he's never, never been in
- 42:47Speaker 1: a relationship, never had to be obligated to any sort
- 42:49Speaker 1: of person or share or have vulnerability or think of
- 42:54Speaker 1: or care for or consider or have empathy for or.
- 42:59Speaker 3: Never had to consider another person's existence. And he's only
- 43:02Speaker 3: concerned about his own survival.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:05Speaker 2: And that was the most important thing. And, you know, that's,
- 43:09Speaker 2: so that's all he could ever handle.
- 43:11Speaker 3: And now he's out of jail and he's like, oh shit,
- 43:14Speaker 3: I can think about other things, but I don't know
- 43:15Speaker 3: how to do this. So it's that kind of thing.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Like Michael said, I don't know if I have this
- 43:19Speaker 3: ability to bring another person in.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Which brings me to Joey, who's like, I love Kim
- 43:26Speaker 1: and I love those kids. And I, all my family
- 43:30Speaker 1: hates me. And my whole life, people are like, he's
- 43:32Speaker 1: an addict. He's always been an addict. He's always going
- 43:34Speaker 1: to do addict shit. And I think to my core
- 43:37Speaker 1: that they're Probably right. And so how do I love
- 43:41Speaker 1: someone like him and her kids and really consider the
- 43:44Speaker 1: fact that I could hurt them and I want to
- 43:47Speaker 1: protect them by, I guess, telling them.
- 43:49Speaker 3: To go away?
- 43:49Speaker 1: And how do I deal with that? Yeah.
- 43:51Speaker 3: And just like him saying, I think they would be
- 43:55Speaker 3: better off without that. And then Michael starts saying, comforting
- 44:00Speaker 3: almost everybody. And I wrote down, and he has no
- 44:03Speaker 3: grace for himself. It's so interesting. And how... you'll see
- 44:08Speaker 3: that in group therapy a lot. Like they'll, they'll be
- 44:10Speaker 3: the one person who says, and they're cheering on the
- 44:12Speaker 3: other people. So you do know there is potential to,
- 44:17Speaker 3: because if you can, a lot of people can, can
- 44:19Speaker 3: afford grace so much to other people, but when you
- 44:22Speaker 3: turn it themselves, they're like, no, I don't deserve it
- 44:25Speaker 3: because you feel terrible about yourself. So, yeah, it's so Michael,
- 44:29Speaker 3: Michael goes next and he's talking about poverty. Yeah. And
- 44:33Speaker 3: we talked about this.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:35Speaker 1: This story is really, really specific. It's a very specific
- 44:39Speaker 1: story that stays with you in the nuance.
- 44:41Speaker 3: And details, right? Oh, I had to ask him about this.
- 44:44Speaker 3: But go ahead.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Okay, talk about it. Well, here, let me set it
- 44:47Speaker 1: up and you talk about it. Set it up, yeah. Basically,
- 44:49Speaker 1: Michael talks about this. One time, his mom had him
- 44:55Speaker 1: and his sister go to stay with her sister's house
- 45:00Speaker 1: and her sister's husband at the time. And her sister's
- 45:02Speaker 1: husband was an asshole and there was kids there. And...
- 45:05Speaker 1: They get served dinner and they look around and there's
- 45:08Speaker 1: like chicken and there's rice and there's salad. And they're
- 45:11Speaker 1: so excited because they don't get to eat all of
- 45:14Speaker 1: those kind of foods a lot.
- 45:16Speaker 3: They're so excited to eat those foods. Yeah.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And they get their plate that is served to them
- 45:20Speaker 1: and it's just rice and ketchup. And his younger sister
- 45:26Speaker 1: is like, can I have some chicken? And Michael asks
- 45:31Speaker 1: his uncle.
- 45:31Speaker 4: The uncle, yeah.
- 45:32Speaker 1: And the uncle- literally says no. And then later on
- 45:37Speaker 1: throws a bag of like discarded chicken at him. And
- 45:41Speaker 1: it's like, you want chicken. That's what you get.
- 45:44Speaker 3: And it stayed with Michael. I, I just can't imagine
- 45:48Speaker 3: like any, in any sense of the word. I just,
- 45:55Speaker 3: I couldn't. And he said, yeah, that happened. And he's like,
- 45:59Speaker 3: he's like, this was one of those moments. He's like,
- 46:01Speaker 3: we didn't actually spend a lot of time with those
- 46:03Speaker 3: people after. He's like, that man was a really bad man.
- 46:10Speaker 3: And he's like, but that stayed with me for a
- 46:12Speaker 3: long time. And he's like, and I hadn't thought about it.
- 46:16Speaker 3: He said, I had not thought about that night since
- 46:20Speaker 3: I was probably 10 or 11. He's like, it just
- 46:25Speaker 3: came back to me. Um, he's like, I told a
- 46:28Speaker 3: lot of other stories in that thing about poverty. He's like,
- 46:31Speaker 3: it's like, but that's the one. And he's like, and I,
- 46:33Speaker 3: he's like, I watched myself doing it. And he's like,
- 46:36Speaker 3: you can actually see I'm feeling again for the first time. Um,
- 46:42Speaker 3: and it, no, that he was, it was just like
- 46:44Speaker 3: such a moment. I was watching him do it. And
- 46:46Speaker 3: I was like, that's crazy.
- 46:47Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Anyway. Oh God.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Who knew Michael and Justine would give so much anymore.
- 46:53Speaker 3: I didn't get it. I know.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I mean, we thought Manhattan Barbie, naming their child Manhattan
- 46:58Speaker 1: Barbie was it. Like, how could you give more than that?
- 47:01Speaker 3: But yeah, no. Manhattan.
- 47:05Speaker 1: So, you know, that is really a hard piece because
- 47:09Speaker 1: I think that, yeah, the smallness of what we consider
- 47:12Speaker 1: the details of the moment, like rice and ketchup on
- 47:14Speaker 1: a plate when you're just watching everyone else. And these
- 47:17Speaker 1: are your cousins also.
- 47:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:19Speaker 1: You know, like. in your family do this to you?
- 47:22Speaker 1: I mean, a loss of board doing it to any
- 47:23Speaker 1: child is, you know, a very fucked up thing. And
- 47:27Speaker 1: that man has like no heart and I, you know,
- 47:30Speaker 1: don't know where he is now, but I can't imagine
- 47:32Speaker 1: that he has use of limbs. Okay. So basically at
- 47:36Speaker 1: this point, they have a bunch of these bands and
- 47:38Speaker 1: a bunch of things they're dealing with. They have to
- 47:39Speaker 1: put the bands on and walk around. And, you know,
- 47:43Speaker 1: I think that it's very difficult to do so. You
- 47:45Speaker 1: really see how limited you are To move in the
- 47:49Speaker 1: world in the way you want to if these things
- 47:52Speaker 1: are holding on so tight, if you cannot breathe with them,
- 47:56Speaker 1: if there is no, like, room to kind of, like,
- 48:00Speaker 1: be with them.
- 48:00Speaker 3: They look like mummies walking, yeah. Yeah.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Basically, at this point, we get to have their lovely break.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Spouses come. Yes.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Partners come and do the exact same thing, you know,
- 48:15Speaker 1: and everyone has trauma, like regardless if you've been incarcerated
- 48:18Speaker 1: or not, these are like words like betrayal or, you know, yeah. Abuse,
- 48:23Speaker 1: you know, it's just neglect, abandonment. I mean, I think
- 48:27Speaker 1: that there's just a lot that people can relate to.
- 48:31Speaker 1: And then basically you have to sort of use your
- 48:35Speaker 1: bands and others bands to not only like you walk
- 48:41Speaker 1: on yourselves, but then connect each other and then walk
- 48:43Speaker 1: around and how difficult that is like, you know, and
- 48:46Speaker 1: having to be there for your partner as you are
- 48:49Speaker 1: dealing with your own bands, watching them struggle with their
- 48:52Speaker 1: bands and having empathy for them while still trying to
- 48:56Speaker 1: do your thing. It's just, it's a, it's a good one.
- 48:59Speaker 1: And it kind of, the episode ends with Alexis talking about,
- 49:04Speaker 1: she was really bullied growing up either because she was
- 49:10Speaker 1: of a darker skin tone and she spoke a different
- 49:13Speaker 1: way and she looked a different way where she talks
- 49:16Speaker 1: about being bigger or chunkier or taller. And, uh, it
- 49:21Speaker 1: really affecting her. And yeah, I was, I mean, yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 3: She was basically saying that I tried to blend in
- 49:28Speaker 3: and I would never stick up for myself because that
- 49:29Speaker 3: way I've made myself smaller so they wouldn't see me. And,
- 49:34Speaker 3: and she's like now, and now when he's Julius is
- 49:37Speaker 3: saying stuff to me, I don't say anything back because
- 49:39Speaker 3: I don't want to fight. I'm still trying to do
- 49:41Speaker 3: the same thing. So she's recognizing her.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Julius has like a situation where he'll just be like,
- 49:49Speaker 1: you're so dumb or you're so stupid.
- 49:51Speaker 3: To her, you know?
- 49:52Speaker 1: And he is like, it's just a lingo. It's a
- 49:54Speaker 1: thing young people do, but it's like.
- 49:58Speaker 2: Means different things to her.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Yeah. And I think also, remember Julius... Julius is still,
- 50:05Speaker 3: even though he's 26 years old, he is still 19.
- 50:08Speaker 3: If not younger. Yeah. And so that's how a 16-year-old fights.
- 50:18Speaker 3: You can't do that if you're with a woman because
- 50:21Speaker 3: she's in her late 20s, something like that. You can't
- 50:25Speaker 3: do that with someone like that. That's the only way
- 50:28Speaker 3: he knows how to communicate. So if they stay together,
- 50:32Speaker 3: which I kind of hope they don't, Um, it's going
- 50:35Speaker 3: to be a lot of work to, she's going to
- 50:38Speaker 3: have to teach him how to be a man. Like,
- 50:41Speaker 3: I don't, I don't, I don't see any other way
- 50:43Speaker 3: around it.
- 50:44Speaker 1: So I couldn't believe they were still together, you know?
- 50:47Speaker 3: I don't, I, well, they have a child, unfortunately. So
- 50:49Speaker 3: I know not, not this unfortunate.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Their child was born. I'm saying they had, they had
- 50:53Speaker 2: a child regardless.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Remember that crazy girl that he was with?
- 50:57Speaker 3: Oh yes. Ashley. Yes. Oh, I miss her. I miss
- 51:02Speaker 3: her and her nuttiness. Oh, yeah. All right, my loves.
- 51:06Speaker 1: That was the end of this episode, but obviously there
