uh today I'm going to be 5 00:00:28,960 --> 00:00:33,079 talking about vexel is a project I've 6 00:00:30,800 --> 00:00:35,559 been working on uh for the last year or 7 00:00:33,079 --> 00:00:39,360 so with some my excellent 8 00:00:35,559 --> 00:00:41,280 colleagues um so yeah this is me uh I'm 9 00:00:39,360 --> 00:00:44,239 a project manager at vexel I mainly 10 00:00:41,280 --> 00:00:46,360 focus on uh Community Building um we're 11 00:00:44,239 --> 00:00:49,440 in the Czech Republic uh part of the 12 00:00:46,360 --> 00:00:51,920 Satoshi Labs kind of pting uh or the 13 00:00:49,440 --> 00:00:54,520 newest company is part of them uh what I 14 00:00:51,920 --> 00:00:56,520 do is I kind of focus on meetups and 15 00:00:54,520 --> 00:00:59,440 trying to build the community uh to 16 00:00:56,520 --> 00:01:01,239 ensure that we're doing it the right way 17 00:00:59,440 --> 00:01:04,519 um 18 00:01:01,239 --> 00:01:06,880 we yeah let me go to next SL uh so first 19 00:01:04,519 --> 00:01:09,560 I'll tell you about what is bexel uh so 20 00:01:06,880 --> 00:01:11,799 and what does it aim to Sol so what I 21 00:01:09,560 --> 00:01:14,000 see is vexel is it's a peer-to-peer 22 00:01:11,799 --> 00:01:18,080 application that's somewhere on the 23 00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:21,360 crossroads between uh social network and 24 00:01:18,080 --> 00:01:24,240 a dating site and things for bitcoiners 25 00:01:21,360 --> 00:01:26,840 uh but as we were initially aimed at 26 00:01:24,240 --> 00:01:30,479 Bitcoin um it was quickly kind of 27 00:01:26,840 --> 00:01:33,600 adapted into um a market for for for 28 00:01:30,479 --> 00:01:35,920 everyone for anything uh so without our 29 00:01:33,600 --> 00:01:38,680 influence um we don't have much control 30 00:01:35,920 --> 00:01:40,320 over the market itself uh because it's 31 00:01:38,680 --> 00:01:42,600 completely peer-to-peer and fully 32 00:01:40,320 --> 00:01:47,280 encrypted so you can kind of see just 33 00:01:42,600 --> 00:01:49,719 from the very beginning here um as soon 34 00:01:47,280 --> 00:01:52,799 as we launched there's offers being 35 00:01:49,719 --> 00:01:55,439 posted for Monero of course for honey uh 36 00:01:52,799 --> 00:01:59,159 for English and language lessons but 37 00:01:55,439 --> 00:02:03,280 also for things like iPads and what else 38 00:01:59,159 --> 00:02:05,000 um Lots of different things uh so where 39 00:02:03,280 --> 00:02:07,479 did we launch we launched specifically 40 00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:10,080 in Czech Republic and Slovakia uh our 41 00:02:07,479 --> 00:02:12,760 big kind of Debut was at a conference 42 00:02:10,080 --> 00:02:16,239 here in Czech Republic called chain Camp 43 00:02:12,760 --> 00:02:18,239 which is the largest non-speaking I 44 00:02:16,239 --> 00:02:20,200 think nonth English-speaking Bitcoin 45 00:02:18,239 --> 00:02:23,160 conference in the world um was over 46 00:02:20,200 --> 00:02:25,720 2,000 uh attendees in 47 00:02:23,160 --> 00:02:29,160 ostrava uh five days later the 48 00:02:25,720 --> 00:02:31,599 marketplace went aled as we um built 49 00:02:29,160 --> 00:02:33,720 this like amazing had this amazing 50 00:02:31,599 --> 00:02:37,200 reaction from the community there uh 51 00:02:33,720 --> 00:02:40,239 quickly 4,900 users in the first like 52 00:02:37,200 --> 00:02:43,519 offers 2.1 million connections were made 53 00:02:40,239 --> 00:02:48,400 and offers of quickly grew to 500 within 54 00:02:43,519 --> 00:02:52,560 the first kind of few weeks um so why 55 00:02:48,400 --> 00:02:56,080 did we do this um I'm a bitcoiner my 56 00:02:52,560 --> 00:03:00,120 first actual introduction to Monero was 57 00:02:56,080 --> 00:03:03,000 last year um at in Lisbon at Monero con 58 00:03:00,120 --> 00:03:05,200 um which is was kind of very fun 59 00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:07,239 interesting conference for me uh I've 60 00:03:05,200 --> 00:03:09,840 been a bitcoiner for a long time I'm was 61 00:03:07,239 --> 00:03:12,280 an English teacher and always used my 62 00:03:09,840 --> 00:03:15,120 kind of platform to talk uh to people 63 00:03:12,280 --> 00:03:16,959 about what was going on uh with with 64 00:03:15,120 --> 00:03:19,560 Bitcoin and kind of orange King people 65 00:03:16,959 --> 00:03:21,840 over the years but last year I kind of 66 00:03:19,560 --> 00:03:23,840 um learned a lot about Monero but one of 67 00:03:21,840 --> 00:03:25,799 the things that I always kind of see it 68 00:03:23,840 --> 00:03:28,000 with it is most of the onboarding from 69 00:03:25,799 --> 00:03:30,360 Monaro starts at centralized 70 00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:33,439 exchanges uh where 71 00:03:30,360 --> 00:03:36,120 these exchanges call like they require 72 00:03:33,439 --> 00:03:39,519 uh kyc U so this kind of creates a 73 00:03:36,120 --> 00:03:41,560 permanent record um of you buy so as we 74 00:03:39,519 --> 00:03:43,799 know the Monera has really excellent 75 00:03:41,560 --> 00:03:48,239 privacy features uh you still there's 76 00:03:43,799 --> 00:03:51,280 still a record of you um buying it so 77 00:03:48,239 --> 00:03:53,480 how do we fix this uh well I was a bit 78 00:03:51,280 --> 00:03:56,200 I'm a bitcoiner so I believe the first 79 00:03:53,480 --> 00:03:59,760 line of satoshi's paper tells us that it 80 00:03:56,200 --> 00:04:01,720 is a peer-to-peer uh Cash System like 81 00:03:59,760 --> 00:04:04,360 Ric cash system and it should be used 82 00:04:01,720 --> 00:04:07,200 without a trusted third party without a 83 00:04:04,360 --> 00:04:09,079 financial institution um and that's what 84 00:04:07,200 --> 00:04:13,319 I that's why I'm so passionate about 85 00:04:09,079 --> 00:04:15,840 bexel and what we're doing um it allows 86 00:04:13,319 --> 00:04:18,759 users to maintain their privacy well 87 00:04:15,840 --> 00:04:21,519 while trading and one of the things that 88 00:04:18,759 --> 00:04:24,040 we think about even with Monero and in 89 00:04:21,519 --> 00:04:26,680 exchanges and every kind of situation is 90 00:04:24,040 --> 00:04:29,039 that there is a difficult onboarding 91 00:04:26,680 --> 00:04:30,120 process and what we want to do is aim to 92 00:04:29,039 --> 00:04:33,840 kind of fix 93 00:04:30,120 --> 00:04:36,199 that um so we want to simplify it we 94 00:04:33,840 --> 00:04:39,560 don't want to I always have this joke 95 00:04:36,199 --> 00:04:41,360 about how um you know if I buy something 96 00:04:39,560 --> 00:04:43,479 like for food I don't need a receipt for 97 00:04:41,360 --> 00:04:45,120 I just want food give me the dut you 98 00:04:43,479 --> 00:04:47,160 give me I'll give you the money into 99 00:04:45,120 --> 00:04:49,280 transaction uh and the same thing goes 100 00:04:47,160 --> 00:04:52,400 with Bitcoin is I don't want to upload 101 00:04:49,280 --> 00:04:54,960 my passport and my water bill and my ID 102 00:04:52,400 --> 00:04:57,759 with everything I want it to be simple 103 00:04:54,960 --> 00:05:00,720 and this brings me to kind of uh an 104 00:04:57,759 --> 00:05:03,880 experience I've had recently with uh 105 00:05:00,720 --> 00:05:07,000 vexel and my friends because I have a 106 00:05:03,880 --> 00:05:10,080 very good friend and every time we tried 107 00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:12,120 to get into the conversation of Bitcoin 108 00:05:10,080 --> 00:05:16,160 it was difficult for him he is an 109 00:05:12,120 --> 00:05:18,520 American living in Czech Republic um and 110 00:05:16,160 --> 00:05:20,360 the on boarding for him was not easy uh 111 00:05:18,520 --> 00:05:22,840 if he's going through a centralized 112 00:05:20,360 --> 00:05:24,919 exchange uh he was always required to 113 00:05:22,840 --> 00:05:28,479 jump through some massive hoop or had 114 00:05:24,919 --> 00:05:30,400 some sort of problem and that's where we 115 00:05:28,479 --> 00:05:33,960 realized that you don't need fancy Tech 116 00:05:30,400 --> 00:05:36,360 to do things um vexel kind of proves 117 00:05:33,960 --> 00:05:38,560 that it's not necessary to to reinvent 118 00:05:36,360 --> 00:05:41,199 the wheel is we want to focus on user 119 00:05:38,560 --> 00:05:43,280 experience accessibility um and allow 120 00:05:41,199 --> 00:05:48,080 people to trade easily and quickly 121 00:05:43,280 --> 00:05:50,319 without kyc or any sort of hurdles um so 122 00:05:48,080 --> 00:05:52,680 back to my friend um we call it his his 123 00:05:50,319 --> 00:05:55,440 name is Gary and uh I spent a lot of 124 00:05:52,680 --> 00:05:57,800 time with Gary he is a kind of a guy 125 00:05:55,440 --> 00:06:00,120 who's not a tech guy uh I used to have 126 00:05:57,800 --> 00:06:02,160 the joke that the day he tries to buy 127 00:06:00,120 --> 00:06:04,560 Bitcoin is the day out sale kind of 128 00:06:02,160 --> 00:06:09,120 thing is is that's when it's jumped the 129 00:06:04,560 --> 00:06:11,080 shark as fumy did um but Gary over the 130 00:06:09,120 --> 00:06:13,319 years we spent a lot of time talking to 131 00:06:11,080 --> 00:06:15,720 each other on Playstation chat and and 132 00:06:13,319 --> 00:06:18,400 as we played games in the evening and uh 133 00:06:15,720 --> 00:06:20,880 as I started a career in kind of the 134 00:06:18,400 --> 00:06:23,880 Bitcoin industry of course my focus 135 00:06:20,880 --> 00:06:26,199 became more related to privacy and and 136 00:06:23,880 --> 00:06:28,039 trying to figure out well how do we how 137 00:06:26,199 --> 00:06:31,120 do we maintain that in a world where 138 00:06:28,039 --> 00:06:33,720 everyone's constantly trying to dox us 139 00:06:31,120 --> 00:06:37,080 we're providing our data to everyone for 140 00:06:33,720 --> 00:06:39,919 everything um and that's a question um 141 00:06:37,080 --> 00:06:42,960 so as Gary started getting interested 142 00:06:39,919 --> 00:06:44,720 again he was overwhelmed by the lack of 143 00:06:42,960 --> 00:06:47,880 options of how limited it was he could 144 00:06:44,720 --> 00:06:49,440 go to an ATM uh yes that was probably 145 00:06:47,880 --> 00:06:51,880 the easiest thing for him but then he 146 00:06:49,440 --> 00:06:55,199 had to figure out well where is ATMs how 147 00:06:51,880 --> 00:06:59,000 much can I buy um and had to drive and 148 00:06:55,199 --> 00:07:02,039 locate them um so as we started talking 149 00:06:59,000 --> 00:07:07,000 and working on this app uh we kind of 150 00:07:02,039 --> 00:07:09,080 gave it a try um so um the story kind of 151 00:07:07,000 --> 00:07:12,120 Jerry's a new father he has a he has a 152 00:07:09,080 --> 00:07:17,000 son but he has a a newborn and as the 153 00:07:12,120 --> 00:07:18,599 chaos of that whole um like new new 154 00:07:17,000 --> 00:07:21,599 child in the life he was looking for 155 00:07:18,599 --> 00:07:24,560 some way to spend time with his kid and 156 00:07:21,599 --> 00:07:26,759 uh gaming as I said something Gary and I 157 00:07:24,560 --> 00:07:28,639 did for a long time together uh but it's 158 00:07:26,759 --> 00:07:30,319 something he and his son were doing and 159 00:07:28,639 --> 00:07:32,080 he went through 160 00:07:30,319 --> 00:07:33,960 um and said I'm going to buy my son a 161 00:07:32,080 --> 00:07:38,080 switch so that you know it's usually 162 00:07:33,960 --> 00:07:40,639 child morph for un leak games so uh he 163 00:07:38,080 --> 00:07:43,479 tried to buy one on Facebook Marketplace 164 00:07:40,639 --> 00:07:45,120 and immediately was scammed and so later 165 00:07:43,479 --> 00:07:48,560 the evening we're laughing I'm talking 166 00:07:45,120 --> 00:07:50,520 on chat and uh laughing at him saying 167 00:07:48,560 --> 00:07:52,720 you know really you you didn't expect 168 00:07:50,520 --> 00:07:54,680 anything I didn't expect anything less 169 00:07:52,720 --> 00:07:56,319 Facebook is this marketplace where you 170 00:07:54,680 --> 00:07:59,319 have your name and your picture and all 171 00:07:56,319 --> 00:08:00,720 of these things but yet we know it's a 172 00:07:59,319 --> 00:08:04,879 Battleground for 173 00:08:00,720 --> 00:08:06,720 scammers um so I started to think and I 174 00:08:04,879 --> 00:08:10,240 have a Nintendo switch personally that I 175 00:08:06,720 --> 00:08:14,919 purchased in 2017 at a Bitcoin all-time 176 00:08:10,240 --> 00:08:17,520 high um and this was kind of a sore spot 177 00:08:14,919 --> 00:08:22,479 for me for a while uh but gave me an 178 00:08:17,520 --> 00:08:25,440 idea so I decided that I would sell my 179 00:08:22,479 --> 00:08:28,639 Nintendo switch but I would only accept 180 00:08:25,440 --> 00:08:31,879 Bitcoin and so Gary again side and 181 00:08:28,639 --> 00:08:33,800 rolled his and said H again I don't know 182 00:08:31,879 --> 00:08:37,360 how to do it so I said please download 183 00:08:33,800 --> 00:08:39,399 our app uh and see see what we can do 184 00:08:37,360 --> 00:08:40,959 see how easy this is so I went back and 185 00:08:39,399 --> 00:08:43,760 forth with him on a lightning wallet 186 00:08:40,959 --> 00:08:45,320 sending SATs back and forth uh and then 187 00:08:43,760 --> 00:08:49,560 once he kind of felt comfortable he 188 00:08:45,320 --> 00:08:52,519 posted his ad and uh it was amazing for 189 00:08:49,560 --> 00:08:54,279 me because uh he wrote me almost 190 00:08:52,519 --> 00:08:56,800 immediately and was like so people 191 00:08:54,279 --> 00:08:59,640 people want to sell me Bitcoin um and 192 00:08:56,800 --> 00:09:03,279 the way that it works is because this is 193 00:08:59,640 --> 00:09:06,600 a peer-to-peer platform uh it uses your 194 00:09:03,279 --> 00:09:08,519 your social network your connections um 195 00:09:06,600 --> 00:09:11,800 it's fully Anonymous so you don't know 196 00:09:08,519 --> 00:09:15,000 who the counterparty is um but you are 197 00:09:11,800 --> 00:09:17,279 aware that you have mutual connections 198 00:09:15,000 --> 00:09:20,079 um the mutual connection that my friend 199 00:09:17,279 --> 00:09:22,560 Gary found was not someone connected 200 00:09:20,079 --> 00:09:25,839 through me it was actually through his 201 00:09:22,560 --> 00:09:28,640 landlord uh and through one other person 202 00:09:25,839 --> 00:09:30,519 so he says well it's weird because these 203 00:09:28,640 --> 00:09:32,640 people we have some sort of connection 204 00:09:30,519 --> 00:09:34,839 here so instead of worrying about 205 00:09:32,640 --> 00:09:36,880 getting scammed he was excited about the 206 00:09:34,839 --> 00:09:39,040 idea that there were these people uh 207 00:09:36,880 --> 00:09:42,480 that he was somehow sharing this 208 00:09:39,040 --> 00:09:45,839 connection with which was Bitcoin um So 209 00:09:42,480 --> 00:09:48,959 within a couple of messages back and 210 00:09:45,839 --> 00:09:51,440 forth um and some confirmations that the 211 00:09:48,959 --> 00:09:53,839 counterparty was legitimate and he was 212 00:09:51,440 --> 00:09:57,240 trusted uh he was able 213 00:09:53,839 --> 00:09:59,279 to uh acquire the Bitcoin via lightning 214 00:09:57,240 --> 00:10:02,000 instantly uh send the money back back 215 00:09:59,279 --> 00:10:04,160 and forth and then I had the Bitcoin in 216 00:10:02,000 --> 00:10:08,640 my wallet um and I delivered him the 217 00:10:04,160 --> 00:10:11,399 Nintendo switch um so this was kind of 218 00:10:08,640 --> 00:10:15,360 that big surprise for me 219 00:10:11,399 --> 00:10:18,680 is we now have tools that are very 220 00:10:15,360 --> 00:10:21,279 simple for people to use to on board 221 00:10:18,680 --> 00:10:22,720 each other into Bitcoin and when we got 222 00:10:21,279 --> 00:10:24,079 through with all this I had a long 223 00:10:22,720 --> 00:10:25,920 conversation with Gary kind of 224 00:10:24,079 --> 00:10:28,680 retrospective and getting his feelings 225 00:10:25,920 --> 00:10:31,320 of what he thought and it was very 226 00:10:28,680 --> 00:10:34,000 interesting to me his his thoughts was 227 00:10:31,320 --> 00:10:35,560 you know he said graduating from school 228 00:10:34,000 --> 00:10:36,800 uh high school and getting his first 229 00:10:35,560 --> 00:10:38,320 bank account and going through this 230 00:10:36,800 --> 00:10:40,000 whole process it's no one teaches you 231 00:10:38,320 --> 00:10:43,040 how to use online banking no one teaches 232 00:10:40,000 --> 00:10:47,000 you how to do these things and it's very 233 00:10:43,040 --> 00:10:50,279 complicated um and this allowed him to 234 00:10:47,000 --> 00:10:52,680 quickly uh do it without kyc without any 235 00:10:50,279 --> 00:10:56,079 sort of third party he gave someone 236 00:10:52,680 --> 00:11:00,240 money they gave him Bitcoin um and now 237 00:10:56,079 --> 00:11:02,519 Gary is an active active Bitcoin um so 238 00:11:00,240 --> 00:11:05,000 it was kind of that seeing someone who 239 00:11:02,519 --> 00:11:07,079 was not a technical person at all um 240 00:11:05,000 --> 00:11:09,440 he's a preschool teacher who likes to 241 00:11:07,079 --> 00:11:12,040 play video games in the evening um and 242 00:11:09,440 --> 00:11:14,720 always had an aversion to these things 243 00:11:12,040 --> 00:11:17,399 start learning about these tools that we 244 00:11:14,720 --> 00:11:20,120 have uh and I said to Gary when we were 245 00:11:17,399 --> 00:11:22,360 finished with it that um I kind of 246 00:11:20,120 --> 00:11:24,279 envied him because his first 247 00:11:22,360 --> 00:11:26,200 transactions uh his first Bitcoin 248 00:11:24,279 --> 00:11:28,240 transactions were the way I think a lot 249 00:11:26,200 --> 00:11:31,320 of Us wish ours had gone they were 250 00:11:28,240 --> 00:11:35,399 private Anonymous and peer-to-peer the 251 00:11:31,320 --> 00:11:37,440 way it was intended um is we kind of 252 00:11:35,399 --> 00:11:39,240 continue to develop this community in 253 00:11:37,440 --> 00:11:41,839 Czech Republic it's been amazing going 254 00:11:39,240 --> 00:11:43,560 to meetups and seeing people be so happy 255 00:11:41,839 --> 00:11:45,839 to have this kind of tool that they're 256 00:11:43,560 --> 00:11:48,240 easily able to trade between each other 257 00:11:45,839 --> 00:11:52,560 uh very quickly and efficiently without 258 00:11:48,240 --> 00:11:55,360 any sort of oversight in any way um
