- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, C.E.O.
- 0:03of Currency Development, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:07and Dandy Market.
- 0:08And guys, I want to start with a date that completely changed how we look at music
- 0:13rollouts: May 15, 2026.
- 0:16Drake didn't just drop an album.
- 0:17He dropped three distinct, full-length albums at the exact same time -- ICEMAN,
- 0:22Habibti, and Maid of Honour.
- 0:24And to lock it in, he ran a seventy-five-projector mapping event that projected
- 0:28visuals across the entire CN Tower in Toronto.
- 0:31That is city-scale branding.
- 0:34Seventy-five projectors on the CN Tower?
- 0:37That is wild, Zygos.
- 0:39Coming from Ohio, building up to Florida, I'm always looking at the grind behind the
- 0:44spectacle.
- 0:46To me, this isn't just a flex.
- 0:48It is a massive land grab for streaming real estate.
- 0:51Three albums means triple the surface area on Spotify and Apple Music algorithms.
- 0:57It is a pure volume play to dominate the charts.
- 1:01But hold on, DJ Universe, as an artist based out of Calabasas,
- 1:06I look at this and think about the workload.
- 1:08If an indie artist tries to copy this and drops thirty-six songs in one day,
- 1:13they are going to drown their own audience.
- 1:16Drake can do it because he has the machine.
- 1:19But let's look at the flip side of 2026.
- 1:22Kendrick Lamar swept the iHeartRadio Awards -- Hip-Hop Artist of the Year,
- 1:27Album of the Year for GNX, and Song of the Year for "Luther" with SZA.
- 1:33Kendrick didn't need seventy-five projectors.
- 1:36He had precision.
- 1:37One culturally dominant record can outperform a hundred catalog tracks.
- 1:43You gotta stay lit to survive in this game, and honestly, Kendrick's play is
- 1:47high-risk, high-reward.
- 1:49If GNX didn't land, he'd have nothing else to fall back on for the year.
- 1:54Drake's move with ICEMAN, Habibti, and Maid of Honour is a business portfolio play.
- 1:59Even if one album is a miss, he has two other assets generating master royalties and
- 2:04publishing copyrights.
- 2:06He's building a diversified real estate portfolio, but with WAV files.
- 2:11Exactly, Dandy!
- 2:12As a currency guy, I see these as separate cash-flowing assets.
- 2:16Each of those three albums has its own master royalties, its own publishing
- 2:20copyrights, and its own unique licensing paths for film or TV.
- 2:24It's not about "dropping music."
- 2:26It's about stacking intellectual property.
- 2:28But Calvin is right -- if an indie artist tries this without the backend
- 2:33infrastructure, they aren't stacking assets, they're just dumping raw materials into
- 2:37a void.
- 2:39That's the trap!
- 2:40If you don't have the marketing budget to push three projects,
- 2:43you're just diluting your focus.
- 2:45Your fans don't know what to listen to first, the playlist curators get confused,
- 2:50and you waste thousands on production.
- 2:52Precision wins when you don't have millions of dollars to throw at the CN Tower.
- 2:58But the lesson isn't "go big or go home," Calvin.
- 3:01The lesson is that every single song you release has to be treated as a business.
- 3:07Whether you drop one song like SZA and Kendrick did with "Luther,"
- 3:11or thirty-six songs like Drake did across those three albums,
- 3:15you have to secure the paper.
- 3:17If the business backend is broken, the music is just free labor.
- 3:22And that's where most artists fall off.
- 3:24They get so caught up in the vibe of making the song in the studio,
- 3:27they completely forget about the split sheets.
- 3:30If you don't stay lit on your business admin, you're literally giving away your
- 3:34future.
- 3:36Let's break down the basic split because so many up-and-coming artists get this
- 3:40wrong.
- 3:41You have the master rights, which is the actual sound recording -- the WAV file
- 3:45itself.
- 3:46Then you have the publishing rights, which is the underlying composition -- the
- 3:50lyrics, the melody, the chords.
- 3:52You can make money off both separately through streaming, mechanical royalties,
- 3:58performance royalties, and sync licensing.
- 4:01But if you don't register them, that money just sits in a black box.
- 4:07That black box is a multi-million dollar industry of uncollected wealth.
- 4:11If you don't register your songs with a Performance Rights Organization -- a PRO
- 4:16like ASCAP or BMI -- those performance royalties don't find their way to your bank
- 4:21account.
- 4:23And God forbid you sell a beat or do a feature without a written split sheet.
- 4:27The moment a record takes off, suddenly everyone remembers their contribution
- 4:32differently.
- 4:33Man, I've seen it firsthand in the studio.
- 4:35"Oh, we're brothers, we'll figure it out later."
- 4:38No!
- 4:39Figure it out now.
- 4:41Look at what happened with the Yeezy lawsuit in 2024 -- a
- 4:45one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar lawsuit from an unpaid web design firm.
- 4:50If a massive creative brand like Kanye's can face legal halts and public messes over
- 4:55sloppy financial commitments, what do you think happens to an indie artist with no
- 4:59legal defense fund?
- 5:02It crushes them.
- 5:03It ends their career before it even starts.
- 5:06Sloppy documentation is the silent killer of creative businesses.
- 5:11So let's make this actionable for anyone listening.
- 5:13If you have three to five finished songs sitting on your hard drive right now,
- 5:17do not just upload them to a distributor and hope for the best.
- 5:20This week, your homework is to get those splits in writing.
- 5:24Register every track with your PRO.
- 5:27And once the paperwork is locked, you have to make a strategic decision.
- 5:32Are you dropping a surprise EP to build momentum, launching a direct-to-fan
- 5:37exclusive on a platform where you keep ninety percent of the revenue,
- 5:42or releasing a steady stream of catalog singles that earn stream-by-stream while you
- 5:47sleep?
- 5:47The choice of how you release is secondary to the discipline of how you protect it.
- 5:53That is the real secret.
- 5:55Drake's seventy-five projectors and Kendrick's award sweeps are just the visible
- 5:59parts of the iceberg.
- 6:01Underneath both is a massive, clean grid of paperwork, registered copyrights,
- 6:05and business discipline.
- 6:07Make sure your foundation is as strong as your music.
