- 0:03So we're still trying to understand why it is that the
- 0:06Torah tells us that Yehuda came close to yourself when they were
- 0:11talking in the previous passage. So yesterday we saw one
- 0:15approach. Here we have another pasuk.
- 0:17This is very classic. Now we've seen this over the
- 0:19last few weeks with the midrash, or attempt to understand the
- 0:22biblical narrative with reference to verses and other
- 0:25places to try and make sense of what's going on.
- 0:27So there's a pasuk in chapter 48 in to heal him Khene Hamilah
- 0:32him. No, I do.
- 0:33For behold the kings are assembled.
- 0:37Avru Yadav, they came together, says the Madras.
- 0:44Khene Hamilah him OK for behold the kings.
- 0:48And this is a reference to two personalities, that of Yehuda
- 0:53and Yosef. Judah was king over his brothers
- 0:57and Yosef was king over Egypt. So they're the 2 kings that this
- 1:02pasuk is referring to. Avru Yaktav, they came together.
- 1:08Zenit Malay Evra alza. The Zenit Malay Evra Alza Avru
- 1:15which is together. This means that this one became
- 1:18filled with anger. Evra, OK, again, play on words,
- 1:23hearing one word on the bit whilst this was reading another.
- 1:28That's very typical of the Midrash to see words sort of
- 1:32encoded in other words, and that one became filled with anger
- 1:39over this one. Judah and Yosef became angry at
- 1:43each other. Well, that makes sense because
- 1:45they're they've both got different purposes and and
- 1:49objectives to realize, and each one seems to be thwarting the
- 1:53other. At a certain point, the measures
- 1:56tells us even that Judah threatened to kill Yosef, which
- 2:01would have been an unthinkable act of bumped off the viceroy of
- 2:05Egyptian society. The measures interprets the word
- 2:08avrou. They came as similar to that of
- 2:12Evra anger. So the phrase of Ruyakhdav
- 2:16therefore means they both became angry.
- 2:21Helps explain why each one had to come close to each other.
- 2:25But really they were angry together.
- 2:27How does the pasuk continue? Hema Rao Kane Tamahu.
- 2:32They saw and they were indeed astounded.
- 2:36Tam mahu this allude says the Madras to the other sons of
- 2:42Yaakov Hauso Vayit mahuha nashim ish El reyehu, because the pasuk
- 2:48says later on that the men looked at one another in
- 2:52astonishment. Vayit mahu is the same type of
- 2:56word as Tam mahu. Again, hearing codes buried deep
- 3:01in the words that the Torah uses.
- 3:05Let's continue with this Pasuk Nehalu neh pasu, the Lord yehlu
- 3:10Akhav, and with the verse continues.
- 3:12That's the passage entailing. It says they were confounded
- 3:15Nehalu and fled in haste. This too alludes to Yaakov's
- 3:20other sons, not Yehuda and not yourself, as the Torah says
- 3:24later on that the brothers could not answer them because they
- 3:28weren't Nehalu the same language.
- 3:31Radha zatam sham El hashabatim, the the boss that continues into
- 3:36Hilam, trembling grips them there.
- 3:39This too is a is a reference to the the brothers of Yehuda and
- 3:45Yosef. I'm rude, the other son said.
- 3:50Melachim medianim elohim elo. These kings are disputing with
- 3:55each other, but what concern is it to us?
- 3:58It is fitting for a king to dispute with a king.
- 4:01So our verse says Vayigash Yehuda.
- 4:04Vayigash, a love Yehuda. Why was he the only one?
- 4:08Because the other brothers has concluded they their role in the
- 4:11drama here was not a central role.
- 4:15They were they were secondary to the drama.
- 4:17It's for two leaders to fight it out.
- 4:20And that's why the of all the brothers, Yehuda approaches
- 4:24yourself and by moving away from his brothers, you heard I was
- 4:28making a very, very profound statement.
- 4:31They are junior, I am senior and I, the senior member of the
- 4:35family, the royal, the monarch, the sovereign of my household
- 4:40will engage with you, the the sovereign, the monarch, the
- 4:44leader of Egypt. Clearly then you heard that had
- 4:48the qualities of leadership inbuilt, which is demonstrating
- 4:53in our pasuk. There's a bit of a parallel,
- 4:56although Moshe Rabain is from a different tribe later on in the
- 4:59story. But years later when Moshe and
- 5:01Aaron go to Pharaoh and the leaders are supposed to be with
- 5:04him, at least according to one reading of the story, all the
- 5:07other leaders, the elders, sort of ran away as they approached
- 5:10the palace, leaving Moshe and Aaron by themselves at the gate
- 5:13of Paro. Sometimes leadership requires a
- 5:17strong inner determination that you have the qualities to do
- 5:20what needs to be done. For a bit longer today, but I
- 5:22hope you'll cope. Take care my friends, have a
- 5:24wonderful day.
