- 0:17Speaker 1: sooner before your Gators kick off.
- 0:19Speaker 2: The season against FAU.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And Florida has been under the microscope, I would say,
- 0:23Speaker 1: some this offseason.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Not in a negative way.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I think there's just a lot of curiosity as to
- 0:28Speaker 1: what John Summerall will bring. And fans have been waiting
- 0:32Speaker 1: for clarity on how this new era is actually going
- 0:36Speaker 1: to begin. With the season opener just a couple of
- 0:39Speaker 1: days away, the coaching staff finally delivered the major news
- 0:44Speaker 1: about answers with the direction of this program that everyone
- 0:47Speaker 1: had been waiting for. Most of the outside headlines have
- 0:50Speaker 1: been locked into one high-profile position battle, but the real
- 0:54Speaker 1: story inside the building goes a lot deeper than just
- 0:57Speaker 1: that one decision. The foundation of this offense is built
- 1:01Speaker 1: on something far more demanding, and recent developments behind closed
- 1:05Speaker 1: doors show exactly what the staff expects from this roster.
- 1:10Speaker 1: If you follow college football at all, you know how
- 1:13Speaker 1: thin the margins are in this sport, especially when the
- 1:17Speaker 1: schedule gets rolling in the SEC. Everything comes down to trust, execution,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and whether or not an entire unit is ready to
- 1:24Speaker 1: play as one. Today, I want to talk about that unit,
- 1:27Speaker 1: the offense on the side of the Florida Gators. Florida's
- 1:31Speaker 1: longest offseason storyline ended on Monday. Head coach John Summerall
- 1:36Speaker 1: officially named Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Filo as the Gators'
- 1:40Speaker 1: starting quarterback for their September 5th opener against Florida Atlantic.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It'll be a night kick off in the swamp.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Really no better way to start your Florida Gator tenure
- 1:50Speaker 1: if you're Aaron Filo. Now, he's 6'1, just a little
- 1:52Speaker 1: over 200 pounds, listed at 207 pounds. comes from Bogart, Georgia.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He beat out returning redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. in
- 2:00Speaker 1: a quarterback competition that kicked off in spring practice and
- 2:04Speaker 1: went all the way through the fall camp. In fact,
- 2:07Speaker 1: both passers were still splitting first team reps as recently
- 2:11Speaker 1: as Saturday's second scrimmage, according to reports. Summerall evaluated that
- 2:15Speaker 1: scrimmage and made his final decision. He brought both quarterbacks
- 2:18Speaker 1: into his office on August 23rd, delivered the news in person.
- 2:24Speaker 2: There was no leaked video.
- 2:25Speaker 1: There was no staged social media reveal and really no
- 2:29Speaker 1: reason to drag out the drama. The reason Philo won
- 2:32Speaker 1: the job is the detail that actually reveals what the
- 2:35Speaker 1: offense will look like. Summerall said it wasn't just about
- 2:38Speaker 1: arm talent. He said the biggest separator was Florida's ability
- 2:42Speaker 1: to quote, operate the full offense at a little bit
- 2:46Speaker 1: higher level right now with Aaron, with the whole package
- 2:50Speaker 1: end quote. And he pointed directly to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It came down to command. It was not about raw
- 2:56Speaker 1: velocity or highlight reel throws, but pure command.
- 3:00Speaker 2: That was the benchmark.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And once you understand the standard, the final outcome stops
- 3:05Speaker 1: looking like it's a surprise at all. Philo entered this
- 3:08Speaker 1: battle with a built-in advantage that Jones very likely was
- 3:12Speaker 1: never going.
- 3:12Speaker 2: To overcome, though he fought valiantly to do so.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Aaron followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner over from Georgia Tech,
- 3:19Speaker 1: where Faulkner had coached him across two full seasons. It
- 3:23Speaker 1: means that Philo had been operating inside this scheme and
- 3:26Speaker 1: speaking this exact terminology since long before Jones ever got
- 3:30Speaker 1: to the University of Florida. Continuity is the key word
- 3:34Speaker 1: for the Gators, and one that I think their fans
- 3:36Speaker 1: should latch onto, and it happens to be the honest truth.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Summerall noted that there was no surprise that Philo held
- 3:43Speaker 1: the edge in spring drills because he had been in
- 3:45Speaker 1: the system and Trammell had not. Then he added an
- 3:49Speaker 1: observation that went beyond the polite coach speak. He said
- 3:52Speaker 1: Trammell has improved a ton. Philo is slated to take
- 3:55Speaker 1: the lion's share of the reps with the first team
- 3:58Speaker 1: offense during these final two weeks of game preparation. Even so,
- 4:02Speaker 1: Summerall made a point of noting that Jones will continue
- 4:06Speaker 1: to take snaps with the starters. He emphasized that both
- 4:10Speaker 1: quarterbacks have given me belief that they can both win.
- 4:14Speaker 1: That single remark sums up the entire announcement in miniature.
- 4:17Speaker 1: The starting role belongs to Philo, but it is far
- 4:20Speaker 1: from locked away for good. I think if the offense
- 4:24Speaker 1: sputters early in the year, Jones is waiting right behind him,
- 4:27Speaker 1: just one flat quarter, several mistake-type game away from jumping
- 4:32Speaker 1: right back into the action. Summerall deliberately refused to turn
- 4:36Speaker 1: his quarterback decision into some kind of a media circus.
- 4:39Speaker 1: As he stated, there will not be some crazy big
- 4:42Speaker 1: hoopla around our building.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's just how we're moving forward.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yet that resolution leaves one massive question hanging over the program.
- 4:50Speaker 1: A first-time starting quarterback in the SEC cannot survive on
- 4:55Speaker 1: comfort and playbook knowledge alone. He survives when the rest
- 4:59Speaker 1: of the offense shoulders the load while he settles into
- 5:02Speaker 1: the speed of this conference. So who's going to carry
- 5:05Speaker 1: that load for Florida throughout September? The answer sits in
- 5:09Speaker 1: the one position room inside the building that nobody has
- 5:12Speaker 1: spent a single second in Gainesville worrying about. It starts
- 5:16Speaker 1: with a jersey number. During his introductory press conference, Summerall
- 5:21Speaker 1: asked the foundational question that has shaped this entire unit.
- 5:25Speaker 1: How can I get number 13 the ball a few
- 5:28Speaker 1: more times? Before I talk about that, I want to
- 5:31Speaker 1: give some love to Alumni Hall. Listen, we are just
- 5:33Speaker 1: less than two weeks away from game day in the swamp.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And I would say, if you haven't geared up yet,
- 5:39Speaker 1: if you haven't gotten everything you need for whether it
- 5:42Speaker 1: be your tailgate or just what you're wearing to the
- 5:43Speaker 1: games or what you're wearing around the office or to
- 5:46Speaker 1: work or church or school, whatever, make sure you're doing
- 5:48Speaker 1: so with Alumni Hall. You can use our code CFA15.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It'll save you 15% both online and in-store. CFA15, save
- 5:56Speaker 1: you 15% with Alumni Hall. We appreciate them for their support.
- 6:01Speaker 1: You guys know it, but for those... who maybe don't
- 6:03Speaker 1: follow Florida as closely or have been living under a
- 6:05Speaker 1: rock for the last year. Number 13 is junior running
- 6:08Speaker 1: back Jaden Bond. He is undeniably Florida's top offensive weapon.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I know that's maybe even crazy to say with as
- 6:15Speaker 1: many five-star wide receivers as they have, but this guy
- 6:18Speaker 1: truly may be the best running back in the conference.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I think he's undoubtedly top three with a healthy Hardy
- 6:25Speaker 1: at Missouri, Kiwan Lacy, and of course Ball.
- 6:29Speaker 2: He is had a phenomenal year last year.
- 6:32Speaker 1: In fact, as an FSU fan, I can tell you,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I think he's probably still running from that game Thanksgiving weekend.
- 6:37Speaker 1: He carried the ball 220 times for 1,170 yards, not
- 6:42Speaker 1: just against FSU, though it felt like it. That was
- 6:44Speaker 1: his season total. He averaged 5.3 yards per rush while
- 6:48Speaker 1: finding the end zone eight times. He had 31 catches
- 6:51Speaker 1: for 185 receiving yards out of the backfield as well.
- 6:55Speaker 1: That production made him only the 10th running back in
- 6:58Speaker 1: program history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a single campaign.
- 7:03Speaker 1: His signature performance came in the season finale. I mentioned it,
- 7:07Speaker 1: but he torched Florida State for 266 yards and two
- 7:10Speaker 1: touchdowns on the ground. Since that breakout season and game,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Baugh has landed on multiple preseason All-SEC and All-American lists,
- 7:19Speaker 1: with NFL scouts projecting him as an early round selection
- 7:23Speaker 1: in the 2027 draft. By all accounts, and from what
- 7:26Speaker 1: I've been told by people at UF and by people elsewhere,
- 7:30Speaker 1: he turned down very lucrative transfer portal opportunities in order
- 7:34Speaker 1: to remain in Gainesville through this coaching transition. Summerall made
- 7:39Speaker 1: keeping him a top priority from his very first day
- 7:42Speaker 1: on the job. But the new coaching staff did not
- 7:45Speaker 1: stop with their star playmaker. Summerall hit the transfer portal hard.
- 7:49Speaker 1: to add Cincinnati's Evan Pryor, a former Ohio State back
- 7:52Speaker 1: whom he praised for his slashing running style ability and
- 7:56Speaker 1: reliable hands in the passing game. He also brought in
- 8:00Speaker 1: East Carolina transfer London Montgomery, calling him the forgotten guy
- 8:04Speaker 1: in that room. He's a physical kick returner who plays
- 8:07Speaker 1: a little bit bigger than he is. Returning sophomore Duke Clark,
- 8:11Speaker 1: checking in at 6'2 and 208, missed the first week
- 8:14Speaker 1: and a half of fall camp due to a soft
- 8:16Speaker 1: tissue injury. True freshman Byron Lewis rounds out a running
- 8:19Speaker 1: back room that Summerall describes as really competitive all the
- 8:23Speaker 1: way down the depth chart. It's hard to project or
- 8:28Speaker 1: accurately tell you, hey, this is definitively the best running
- 8:31Speaker 1: back room in a conference or in a state or
- 8:34Speaker 1: just wherever. If I had to pick one running back
- 8:37Speaker 1: room in the SEC, I'd probably be picking Florida's. And
- 8:42Speaker 1: it's not to tell you that another one couldn't be
- 8:43Speaker 1: just as good or that another one won't have more
- 8:45Speaker 1: rushing yards. But when I get the top line talent
- 8:49Speaker 1: of ball and then I get the depth that's behind him,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I don't know if another one compares. I might even
- 8:55Speaker 1: like Lacey a tad more running back for running back,
- 8:58Speaker 1: but the depth in that room is insane. The depth
- 9:02Speaker 1: is also why camp reporting repeatedly reached the same verdict.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The backfield is the undeniable engine of Florida's offense. And
- 9:11Speaker 1: then came the first scrimmage of camp. Florida's starting offense
- 9:14Speaker 1: lined up facing a fourth and one, and they came
- 9:16Speaker 1: away empty. Summerall was pretty brutally honest, which is my
- 9:20Speaker 1: favorite thing about him. You never have to guess what
- 9:22Speaker 1: he's thinking. He said, I was absolutely freaking pissed. He
- 9:27Speaker 1: stressed that short yardage conversion should be 100% conversion for us.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Notice where the head coach directed the accountability. He didn't
- 9:36Speaker 1: point his finger at his star running back. He didn't
- 9:39Speaker 1: point his finger at the offensive line or the offensive coordinator.
- 9:43Speaker 1: He made it clear that the breakdown belonged to the
- 9:46Speaker 1: entire unit, not Jaden, who was already working on a
- 9:51Speaker 1: restricted pitch count that day, according to Summerall. The response
- 9:54Speaker 1: from the offense, though, was immediate. In the second scrimmage,
- 9:58Speaker 1: Summerall noted that the unit dominated the day and really
- 10:00Speaker 1: flashed in the run game. He pointed to the mismatch
- 10:03Speaker 1: on film, describing running backs finding holes in us not
- 10:06Speaker 1: making great tackles in space. He even labeled the opening
- 10:10Speaker 1: series as Jaden Baugh's drive, which tells you everything you
- 10:13Speaker 1: need to know about how Faulkner intends to set the
- 10:15Speaker 1: tone on Saturdays. The running game answered the challenge. The
- 10:19Speaker 1: star running back is healthy and the rotation is deep. Still,
- 10:22Speaker 1: we have to look back at that failed fourth and
- 10:24Speaker 1: one because the root cause was never fully broken down.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Failing to pick up a single yard is rarely a
- 10:31Speaker 1: running back issue. With the talent sitting in this room,
- 10:34Speaker 1: it is clearly not a playmaking deficit that Florida has.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Short yardage football is decided entirely by the five guys
- 10:42Speaker 1: on the offensive line. It's the line of scrimmage issue.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And Summerall admitted that the offensive line is where his
- 10:49Speaker 1: true concerns have lived all along. On the very same
- 10:52Speaker 1: Monday that Philo earned the starting quarterback job, Summerall quietly
- 10:55Speaker 1: laid out Florida's projected starting offensive line. Bryce Lovett sat
- 11:00Speaker 1: at left tackle. Najee Harris starts at left guard. Harrison
- 11:03Speaker 1: Moore handles the center duties. TJ Shanahan Jr. lines up
- 11:06Speaker 1: at right guard. And Emeka Ugorji, hopefully I pronounced that right,
- 11:11Speaker 1: anchors the group at right tackle. Both tackle spots represent
- 11:14Speaker 1: mild surprises heading into the fall. Lovett has bounced between
- 11:18Speaker 1: guard and tackle throughout his career with early struggles on
- 11:21Speaker 1: the right edge last season, pushing him into a reserve role.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Ugorji is a transfer who spent his true freshman year
- 11:28Speaker 1: at Stanford and was viewed largely as a developmental depth
- 11:31Speaker 1: piece rather than an immediate starter. The interior duo of
- 11:35Speaker 1: Harris and Moore provides the steady foundation that Florida can
- 11:39Speaker 1: build around. And here is the admission that reframes the
- 11:42Speaker 1: entire narrative around this offense. Some are all conceded that
- 11:46Speaker 1: offensive line, not quarterback, had been keeping him up at night.
- 11:51Speaker 1: He said, I've had more concern up until this past
- 11:53Speaker 1: week on the O-line. Pay close attention to that phrasing, though.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Up until this past week. Apparently, the last week has
- 12:02Speaker 1: changed things. Maybe Saturday night scrimmage has changed things. Summerall
- 12:07Speaker 1: announced that the offensive line played their best scrimmage player,
- 12:10Speaker 1: best football Saturday since he's been there, and he was
- 12:13Speaker 1: freaking jacked. The primary catalyst for that breakthrough was Lovett,
- 12:17Speaker 1: who took the hardest path to get there. The coaching
- 12:21Speaker 1: staff has challenged him, both directly in public and behind
- 12:25Speaker 1: closed doors, and apparently he has answered all questions. Summerall
- 12:28Speaker 1: revealed that the top player on the scrimmage's opening drive
- 12:31Speaker 1: was either Jaden Baugh or Bryce Lovett. One of the two,
- 12:34Speaker 1: adding that Lovett has really elevated at tackle. If you
- 12:38Speaker 1: take a moment to think about the gravity of that statement,
- 12:41Speaker 1: on the exact possession that Summerhall labeled Jaden Baugh's drive,
- 12:46Speaker 1: his starting left tackle was arguably the best football player
- 12:49Speaker 1: on the field. Even so, this starting five remains written
- 12:53Speaker 1: in pencil. Summerhall would only say that the Gators are
- 12:55Speaker 1: really close to locking it down, pointing out that redshirt
- 12:59Speaker 1: freshman T.J.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Dice Jr.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Penn State transfer Egan Boyer, who spent two seasons playing
- 13:04Speaker 1: under offensive line coach Phil Troutwine and returning right tackle
- 13:07Speaker 1: Caden Jones, are still very much alive. Guard Rod Kearney
- 13:12Speaker 1: also drew praise for putting together a really good training camp,
- 13:14Speaker 1: standing out as someone that Summerall believes we can play
- 13:18Speaker 1: and win with. As a result, fans should expect plenty
- 13:22Speaker 1: of rotation up front early in the season. Summerall projected
- 13:26Speaker 1: that Florida will play a decent number of guys across
- 13:28Speaker 1: the matchups with FAU in the following game against Campbell.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He wants to determine who the best group is long-term.
- 13:36Speaker 1: His larger point went well beyond individual names, though. He
- 13:39Speaker 1: emphasized that the front five is starting to create cohesion
- 13:43Speaker 1: and then have confidence in each other and how they're working.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Then he delivered the key takeaway. He said people don't
- 13:51Speaker 1: understand how hard it is for that group to play
- 13:53Speaker 1: as one. That single sentence, to me, connects every piece
- 13:57Speaker 1: of this Florida offense. You have a first-time starting quarterback
- 14:01Speaker 1: who earned his role through pre-snap command at the line.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You have a superstar running back who everybody in the country,
- 14:07Speaker 1: if they don't know yet, will know very soon. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: you have five offensive linemen still learning how to move
- 14:12Speaker 1: together as one cohesive unit. That means the defining question
- 14:16Speaker 1: for Florida this September is not simply who lines up
- 14:19Speaker 1: under center. The season will be decided by how quickly
- 14:22Speaker 1: those five linemen learn how to execute in harmony. How
- 14:27Speaker 1: this offense performs during those tests will determine whether the
- 14:32Speaker 1: entire vision comes together or falls apart for the entire
- 14:35Speaker 1: world to see. I've got a lot of faith in
- 14:37Speaker 1: Phil Troutwine. I think John Summerill is going to be
- 14:40Speaker 1: a good coach, and we get our first couple of
- 14:42Speaker 1: answers on that just less than 10 days from today.
- 14:45Speaker 1: We appreciate you guys for tuning in to SEC Football Addiction.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Hopefully you'll subscribe and join us throughout the season. We
- 14:52Speaker 1: appreciate our friends over at PrizePix, where all new users
- 14:54Speaker 1: get $ 150 instantly when they win their first $ 5 lineup
- 14:58Speaker 1: using code HMA.
- 15:00Speaker 2: We'll see you guys on the next one.
