- 0:32This is Madeline Ashley with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34podcast, and I'm thrilled to be joined today
- 0:37by Jason Neumeier, CEO of AdventHealth Riverview in
- 0:40Riverview, Florida.
- 0:41Jason, thanks for joining me. Oh, thanks for
- 0:43having me. It's a pleasure to be here
- 0:45with you. Well, I'm so excited to dive
- 0:47into our conversation. But before we do, do
- 0:49you mind sharing just a little bit about
- 0:51yourself with our listeners and and more about
- 0:53AdventHealth Riverview?
- 0:55Absolutely. Again,
- 0:57thrilled to serve the community as part of
- 0:59AdventHealth Riverview as the executive here. I've been
- 1:02with AdventHealth since December
- 1:042004,
- 1:05so celebrating twenty one years of being with
- 1:07AdventHealth.
- 1:08And I'm so excited to be part of
- 1:10this organization.
- 1:11I've had the opportunity to learn, grow, and
- 1:14continue developing my career, as well as serving
- 1:16others through this work. It's special. And,
- 1:20especially as we go into the Christmas season
- 1:21here, it's exciting to appreciate the sacred work
- 1:24that we get to do in each of
- 1:26the communities we get to serve across AdventHealth.
- 1:29AdventHealth is in nine states, has over 100,000
- 1:32team members,
- 1:33and we really embrace
- 1:35the moments of how we can lean into
- 1:37the community,
- 1:38be a part of the community, put our
- 1:40roots down, and and be a not for
- 1:42profit that's reinvesting
- 1:43in the work that goes on day in
- 1:45and day out in health care, but also
- 1:47stepping into spaces, caring for the community in
- 1:50a way that shows partnership and friendship.
- 1:52Wonderful. And it's so cool to hear that
- 1:54you've you've been with the organization for such
- 1:56a long time and are now spearheading,
- 1:58AdventHealth Riverview. So excited to dive into this
- 2:01discussion.
- 2:02First question I have for you here. So
- 2:04as I, as I mentioned to you before
- 2:05the podcast, I actually covered,
- 2:07here at Becker's when, AdventHealth for few opened
- 2:10and that was a $263,000,000
- 2:13facility that opened in 2024
- 2:16for our for our listeners that might not
- 2:18know the background there. So now,
- 2:20the hospital is investing
- 2:2250,000,000
- 2:23to nearly double its capacity, just just one
- 2:25year after opening. So Yes. Could you could
- 2:28you share some of the factors that drove
- 2:29that decision so quickly and and what it
- 2:32reveals about, you know, maybe how demand and
- 2:34population growth are really reshaping,
- 2:36your service area?
- 2:38Well, I've been blessed to be a part
- 2:40of this project for four years now, and,
- 2:42the intentionality
- 2:43around the project is really special. AdventHealth made
- 2:46an investment here in a part of Hillsborough
- 2:48County that is booming. So the community has
- 2:51grown dramatically over the last few years, but
- 2:53as on pace to grow at 7% or
- 2:56better for the next decade. So there's a
- 2:58a huge population of 500,000
- 3:00lives in a thirty minute radius of our
- 3:02hospital as we sit today.
- 3:04And, we just see that as, again, a
- 3:07a function of
- 3:09opportunity to serve and provide our special brand
- 3:11of whole person care, which is really being
- 3:14sensitive to mind, body, and spirit and how
- 3:16we engage these individuals in the community. And
- 3:19I share all that with you because there
- 3:20are other health care systems in this market.
- 3:23And what we have found in short order
- 3:25and just opening in October 24 till now
- 3:28is that people are thrilled that AdventHealth
- 3:31is in this part of Hillsborough County, that
- 3:33our special brand of health care is something
- 3:35that they're embracing, we're earning their trust, and
- 3:38it's showing up by having a really busy
- 3:40emergency room.
- 3:42Our surgical services spaces,
- 3:44both from an elective and inpatient volume perspective,
- 3:47really,
- 3:48hustling and bustling as well.
- 3:50And we found that even as early as
- 3:52summer of this year in 2025,
- 3:55we were dealing with pressure points that we
- 3:57anticipated
- 3:58three to four years out from a forecast.
- 4:01So it pushed us, fortunately,
- 4:03in a way to go down a path
- 4:06and make an investment, which has been made.
- 4:08And now we're in progress to build out
- 4:10two new units,
- 4:1260,
- 4:13eight beds
- 4:14in a med surge and PCU capacity
- 4:17to really create more
- 4:19acute care capacity inside of our facility.
- 4:22And that really has been,
- 4:24in one point, a blessing and and an
- 4:26honor. In other part, it's a little bit
- 4:28of a scramble for us to make this
- 4:30work. And I'm so grateful, again, to AdventHealth
- 4:32because we made, investments in the building
- 4:36to build out a 272,000
- 4:38square foot hospital facility,
- 4:41which was shelled out
- 4:43and shelled out to the point of about
- 4:4440%.
- 4:46So we are able to go into shelled
- 4:47spaces.
- 4:49These two units are shelled and ready to
- 4:50go. We don't need to bring cranes on
- 4:52the property and disrupt, the already busy corridor
- 4:55here in South Hillsborough County with, cranes and
- 4:58traffic and, additional
- 5:00construction activity on our site, we're able to
- 5:02go right into the building and finish out
- 5:04spaces.
- 5:05So that allows us to shorten the timeline
- 5:08from when the project starts to when we
- 5:09offer care. And that's, something that we'll be
- 5:12able to do by December
- 5:14at this time. So So if you call
- 5:15me back next year, at this time, we'll
- 5:17be able to give you an update on
- 5:18some special things that we've been able to
- 5:19see over the last year. But there should
- 5:21be,
- 5:22essentially, those 68 beds online,
- 5:25and we'll move from an 82 bed facility
- 5:27that we are today to a 150
- 5:29beds.
- 5:30So just so I'm understanding correctly, by December
- 5:33next year, that's when everything will be ready
- 5:35up up and running, essentially.
- 5:37We will be providing patient care next December
- 5:39out of these two units. Yes. That's wonderful.
- 5:41That is so cool to hear, and it's
- 5:43great to see that you guys are working
- 5:44to meet that need and ready to go
- 5:45to meet the need. Can you share some
- 5:47of the lessons that, you know, you've learned
- 5:50throughout this whole entire process, you know, growing
- 5:52so much quicker than you've even anticipated,
- 5:55and maybe how you and your team are,
- 5:56you know, just kind of forecasting that community
- 5:58need?
- 6:00Is this a one podcast or are we
- 6:02doing a miniseries? I'm just joking.
- 6:05We've
- 6:08learned a lot of lessons is the point.
- 6:10And what I would tell you is
- 6:12there is really, special work that's happening here
- 6:14in our facility. One thing that I wanna
- 6:16call out is how important it is to
- 6:18assimilate new team members. We have been very
- 6:20intentional
- 6:21about trying to bring in,
- 6:24new talent to our organization, also, so we're
- 6:26not shifting
- 6:28team members from other sister facilities. So when
- 6:31we opened our hospital last October,
- 6:33about 70% of our team was from other
- 6:36healthcare systems.
- 6:38And that creates a little bit of a
- 6:40challenge. And I would tell you, it we
- 6:42have learned a lot about how to
- 6:45orient better,
- 6:46assimilate,
- 6:47and invite people to be inspired by our
- 6:50brand of healthcare.
- 6:51And we have seen
- 6:53time and time again and received their feedback
- 6:55through, either voice to voice interaction or through
- 6:59our own Glint survey process
- 7:01that we have a highly engaged team that's
- 7:03so excited to work at AdventHealth
- 7:05and be a part of something
- 7:08that is,
- 7:09very intentional with regards, again, whole person care.
- 7:12We invite our team not just to provide
- 7:14world class expertise,
- 7:17in the skills and services that they provide
- 7:20in the health care space. We also invite
- 7:22them to be
- 7:23uncommonly compassion and empathetic. And those are words
- 7:26that other health care systems don't tend to
- 7:28touch.
- 7:29-Mm -They they might a little bit, but
- 7:31it's really,
- 7:33something we want to not just touch but
- 7:35embrace.
- 7:36And that is to understand that people are
- 7:38dealing with deep emotions in these moments, that
- 7:41they're coming in looking for help. And needing
- 7:44something that, they could not find at another
- 7:47location. And we want to be able to
- 7:49sit in those moments and give them, again,
- 7:51the right kind of acute care. But as
- 7:53we do that, serve and support them in
- 7:55a way that is
- 7:57holding their hand, giving them,
- 8:01warmth and hope as they navigate their health
- 8:04care issue.
- 8:06Yeah.
- 8:06And that's so important. And, you know, on
- 8:08just on the topic of of your team
- 8:10that you work with, I believe now keep
- 8:12me honest here. I believe when I covered
- 8:14the initial hospital opening, I I think it
- 8:16it said in the release that it brought
- 8:17around, I think, a thousand jobs to the
- 8:19area. Is that accurate?
- 8:22It was accurate that yeah. That was the
- 8:24Yeah. At the time market there. Currently, there
- 8:26were over 800 team members. Okay. Yeah. And
- 8:28so and and with this expansion, could you
- 8:31talk on how many new jobs it will
- 8:32bring,
- 8:33and just a little deeper just in terms
- 8:35of the specialized care options and how you're
- 8:37approaching that growth and and recruitment.
- 8:40Yeah. We anticipate being around 1,200,
- 8:42jobs here. So another 400 jobs that we
- 8:44expect to bring into this campus with this
- 8:47next phase. And we still have shelved space
- 8:50both in our medical plaza and our hospital.
- 8:52So even as we go do this advanced
- 8:55work to build out shelled space and to
- 8:58make things happen here, we still have,
- 9:00space set aside that we can quickly grow
- 9:03into, and we won't find ourselves
- 9:06using
- 9:07all of the free and available space that
- 9:09we have again on the campus. We still
- 9:11have shelved locations that we're gonna bring more
- 9:13jobs as well as more opportunity online.
- 9:16But with this next phase, we'll be around
- 9:171,200.
- 9:19And what's that mean to you? I mean,
- 9:20just from an economic perspective in the area,
- 9:22I'm sure that means a lot to the
- 9:23community,
- 9:24to bring more jobs to the area.
- 9:27Absolutely. I have the opportunity to serve and
- 9:29support a couple of chambers here in this
- 9:31part of the community,
- 9:32And they are thrilled. They're really grateful that
- 9:34we're here. We are sitting geographically about twenty
- 9:38minutes south and then again twenty minutes north
- 9:40of our nearest competitors.
- 9:42So really poised in a part of the
- 9:44market that was underserved.
- 9:46And it was really a blessing that we
- 9:48had the opportunity to find the land and
- 9:50that the population was as dense around us.
- 9:54Because when we put this
- 9:56project in motion,
- 9:59Generally, we had folks walking through, and I
- 10:01was warned in advance that we would fill
- 10:02up faster than what we thought. And, true
- 10:05to form, the community knows
- 10:07voice of the customer is real, and folks
- 10:09were embracing what we were providing as, again,
- 10:12whole person care here at this location.
- 10:15Yeah. And, you know, as Riverview experiences this
- 10:18this kind of transition,
- 10:19how are you using data and technology to
- 10:22kind of anticipate the community's future health care
- 10:24needs even even beyond this and just maybe
- 10:26where growth is looking?
- 10:28That's a great question. We are using
- 10:31AI as part of,
- 10:33our analytical toolset so that we are looking
- 10:35at market changes and
- 10:37also,
- 10:39wide functions of variability
- 10:41with regards to how we're running our analysis
- 10:43to appreciate
- 10:45the different
- 10:46potential models that are out there in the
- 10:48market when we think about South Hillsborough County
- 10:51or even the state of Florida. So we
- 10:53have some folks at our corporate office that
- 10:55help run point with this, and they're part
- 10:57of a research team. And they are incredible
- 10:59individuals and they produce a lot of, great
- 11:02reports that we are able to then use
- 11:04and really risk stratify
- 11:06kind of the decisions that we're making as
- 11:08well as the types of services that the
- 11:09community needs when we look at supply and
- 11:11demand for
- 11:13urology or supply and demand for GI or,
- 11:16you know, oncology services, those are all hot
- 11:18topics and things we're really appreciating
- 11:21how we can make sure we're
- 11:23meeting market needs and, if not,
- 11:26competing in spaces that we know we can
- 11:28have an advantage because of x, y, or
- 11:30z reasons.
- 11:31And that's powerful work that we're really
- 11:34impressed to see playing out here across the
- 11:36state of Florida. I'm sure other states are
- 11:38doing the same thing inside of AdventHealth, but
- 11:40I'm just not as close to those other
- 11:42activities. Right. Well, it is truly incredible to
- 11:44hear about the growth and just community investment,
- 11:47that AdventHealth Review is
- 11:49is doing right now. And, Jason, we're gonna
- 11:51have to do a podcast again, in next
- 11:53December so I can hear all the updates,
- 11:55and and I really appreciate you, taking the
- 11:58time to connect
- 11:59today. I would welcome it. We were excited
- 12:01to talk about what we're doing in this
- 12:02community. It's special work. Again, we're grateful to
- 12:05extend the healing ministry of Christ in a
- 12:06way that showcases love and compassion to those
- 12:09who do choose to receive care at our
- 12:11facility or,
- 12:13you know, if they get dropped off here
- 12:15and, they haven't met us, that we're able
- 12:17to earn their trust in a way that
- 12:19lets them know that we see them
- 12:21as unique individuals. We are gonna care for
- 12:23them and honor their traditions, their norms, and
- 12:25love them through whatever process is in front
- 12:27of them. Oh, that's great to hear. And,
- 12:29again, really looking forward to connecting again soon.
- 12:31So thank you so much for taking the
- 12:32time, Jason. Pleasure's mine. Thank you.
