- 0:42Speaker 1: dot us. In today's episode of Listener Questions, I'm covering
- 0:47Speaker 1: everything from how I've coped with injury in the past,
- 0:51Speaker 1: how I quote unquote got fast, how I started making
- 0:55Speaker 1: money as a freelancer and what that looked like, and.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So much more.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Huge thanks to all the hurdlers that submitted questions that

- 1:28Speaker 2: And with that, let's get to hurdling.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, it's Olivia. So we know the beginning of
- 1:40Speaker 3: your running story and we know where you are now,
- 1:44Speaker 3: and you're a pretty experienced runner and you're pretty damn fast,
- 1:48Speaker 3: which is awesome. But what happened in between? Like how
- 1:52Speaker 3: long did it take you to run your first race
- 1:56Speaker 3: and to improve those times? Is this a multi year
- 2:00Speaker 3: journey or did all kind of take off really fast?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Great question. I started running, just in general, back in
- 2:10Speaker 1: two thousand and eight ish in college, and I talk
- 2:15Speaker 1: a lot about this time in my life in episode one,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so if you have yet to listen to that, I
- 2:21Speaker 1: definitely encourage you to dial it back. But I started
- 2:25Speaker 1: running in around two thousand and eight, and it wasn't
- 2:28Speaker 1: until twenty thirteen that I ran my first full marathon.
- 2:33Speaker 1: That was in Hartford. I ran it in four three nineteen,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and I was ecstatic. To be honest, I don't remember
- 2:41Speaker 1: much about that marathon, but I remember a lot about
- 2:45Speaker 1: my first New York marathon, which was in twenty fourteen,
- 2:49Speaker 1: when I ran three fifty one twenty one. I never, ever,
- 2:53Speaker 1: in my wildest dreams, thought that I would be a
- 2:56Speaker 1: sub four hour marathon or and I just remember so
- 3:01Speaker 1: much about the magic of that day and.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Just how great it was.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Between twenty fourteen and twenty nineteen when I landed my
- 3:11Speaker 1: newest pr of three twenty eighth eight for a full marathon,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I ran a good amount of races, including of course,
- 3:19Speaker 1: everything from miles to five k's to ten k's to
- 3:23Speaker 1: full marathons. My slowest quote unquote marathon is four fourteen,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and my fastest again is that Chicago three twenty eighth
- 3:32Speaker 1: eight last year. If you haven't listened to the Chicago recap,
- 3:35Speaker 1: another plug for that, definitely encourage you to give that
- 3:39Speaker 1: a listen. But as you can see, I mean I
- 3:42Speaker 1: recapped here a wide date range twenty thirteen to twenty nineteen,
- 3:48Speaker 1: I didn't quote unquote get fast overnight. In fact, it
- 3:52Speaker 1: took me a really long time. And to be honest
- 3:55Speaker 1: with you, when it came to know any sort of
- 3:59Speaker 1: time goal or anything, I didn't run races, so to speak,
- 4:05Speaker 1: really with a time goal in mind until maybe the
- 4:09Speaker 1: last two years. I mean, for me, running has just
- 4:13Speaker 1: always been something that's brought me so much joy, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: I really every single time I sign up for a race,
- 4:20Speaker 1: enjoy the process, enjoy the journey. And so it wasn't
- 4:24Speaker 1: until I would say, early twenty eighteen that I started
- 4:28Speaker 1: running to try to quote unquote find my fast And
- 4:32Speaker 1: it's interesting actually because that coincides with the beginning of Hurdle,
- 4:36Speaker 1: that coincides with a lot of stuff that was going
- 4:39Speaker 1: on in my personal life, and I really dialed into
- 4:43Speaker 1: running to.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Help cope with a lot of that tough stuff.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And so whereas before the act of running had felt
- 4:51Speaker 1: like enough, and trust me, there are still days that
- 4:53Speaker 1: it does feel like enough just to get up, get out,
- 4:56Speaker 1: it feels.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It feels good.
- 4:58Speaker 1: But I just I started to get to a place
- 5:02Speaker 1: where I was ready to push for more. And I
- 5:05Speaker 1: do really think that you have to be at that place.
- 5:08Speaker 1: There is no reason why running just for running sake
- 5:11Speaker 1: isn't enough. You don't need to be slaying quick quote
- 5:17Speaker 1: unquote runs to be a runner. Everyone is a runner
- 5:20Speaker 1: in their own right. And for me, for so many years,
- 5:23Speaker 1: for you know, five ish years, I just ran because
- 5:27Speaker 1: I enjoyed running. And now I still do that, but
- 5:31Speaker 1: I've kind of upped the antsy a little bit for myself,
- 5:34Speaker 1: which has helped me mix things up and find new
- 5:37Speaker 1: enjoyment in the sport that I love. So getting fast
- 5:40Speaker 1: quote unquote didn't happen overnight. And one last tibit I
- 5:44Speaker 1: will say on this is in order to get fast,
- 5:47Speaker 1: as I've said before, you need to run fast. You
- 5:50Speaker 1: need to consciously add quote unquote faster intervals, faster runs
- 5:56Speaker 1: into your training. It's not going to be like one
- 5:58Speaker 1: day you just start bringing down your pace miraculously from
- 6:02Speaker 1: ten minute miles to nine minute miles. No, there's going
- 6:05Speaker 1: to be some threshold work in there. There's going to
- 6:07Speaker 1: be some tempo work, some interval running and all.
- 6:09Speaker 2: That good stuff.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So yeah, at least a six seven year journey for
- 6:13Speaker 1: me to to really pick up the pace. But I'm
- 6:16Speaker 1: definitely at the point right now where I'm feeling really
- 6:19Speaker 1: strong and really really excited for what's to come.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Hey Emily, my name's Anna and I'm from Oklahoma. I
- 6:30Speaker 4: love the podcast, love to follow you on Instagram, love
- 6:33Speaker 4: your whole deal, and I just wanted to kind of
- 6:37Speaker 4: get some comments from you. I too, am in my
- 6:41Speaker 4: early thirties. I feel like my career is going really well.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Running's going really well even in twenty twenty, but then
- 6:50Speaker 4: there's still this like I need to meet someone, I
- 6:53Speaker 4: need to get married, I need to have a kid soon.
- 6:58Speaker 4: How are you kind of knowing that pressure or do
- 7:01Speaker 4: you have any advice for someone facing this circumstance, especially
- 7:07Speaker 4: in a year where we're supposed to avoid people generally. Anyway,
- 7:11Speaker 4: I'd love to hear anything you have to say on
- 7:13Speaker 4: the topic, and I appreciate everything you do.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Man.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Do I feel this, Listen? I get it.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I am a thirty two year old woman living alone
- 7:28Speaker 1: in New York City. I am single. I am not
- 7:32Speaker 1: dating anyone in particular right now, and it can be
- 7:36Speaker 1: really frustrating, especially if you don't feel comfortable in who
- 7:44Speaker 1: it is that you are and what you have to offer.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And I think that that's really my biggest advice on
- 7:50Speaker 1: this topic.
- 7:50Speaker 2: For me.
- 7:51Speaker 1: For a long time, I let those external pressures get
- 7:55Speaker 1: to me, and a lot of the time I allowed
- 7:59Speaker 1: myself to feel as though I was doing something wrong
- 8:02Speaker 1: because maybe I wasn't as focused on my personal life
- 8:06Speaker 1: as I was on my business or my community or
- 8:09Speaker 1: my work or what have you. At the end of
- 8:11Speaker 1: the day, right now I can confidently sit here in
- 8:15Speaker 1: my apartment and tell you that I feel so good
- 8:18Speaker 1: about who I am and what I have to offer
- 8:22Speaker 1: that the external feedback it doesn't get to me as
- 8:24Speaker 1: much anymore because I know that when and not if,
- 8:28Speaker 1: when I find this person, I am going to be
- 8:32Speaker 1: so ready for it, like so ready and so sure
- 8:38Speaker 1: of who I am and what I have to offer,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and trust me, like I get it. I hate it
- 8:44Speaker 1: and I love you, mom, if you're listening to this,
- 8:46Speaker 1: but I hate it when my mom asks me if
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm seeing anyone, and a lot of the time it's
- 8:51Speaker 1: like I don't even want to talk about this because
- 8:53Speaker 1: even if there might be someone in the mix, if
- 8:56Speaker 1: I can't, if I don't know that this person is
- 8:59Speaker 1: the person, and I'm just like not at a point
- 9:01Speaker 1: in my life where I even want to mention it
- 9:03Speaker 1: to my family. And so if you can really, if
- 9:06Speaker 1: you too feel as though at times like something is
- 9:08Speaker 1: wrong with you because you are not you know, ring
- 9:12Speaker 1: on left hand, ready to walk down the aisle, Nothing
- 9:15Speaker 1: is wrong with you. Keep doing what you're doing, keep
- 9:19Speaker 1: your head up, and believe with your whole heart that
- 9:22Speaker 1: at the right time, with the right person, it's going
- 9:26Speaker 1: to happen.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I am gearing up to run my first marathon, and
- 9:32Speaker 4: I'd love to know how you recommend approaching the week
- 9:36Speaker 4: leaning up to the virtual race.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Congratulations, this is such an exciting accomplishment. Just because you
- 9:42Speaker 1: are not towing a race starting line like you would
- 9:45Speaker 1: normally doesn't mean that you shouldn't be preparing the same
- 9:49Speaker 1: way to undergo this on your own in a virtual way.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That means making sure that fueling and hydration is king
- 9:56Speaker 1: this week, having whole foods, really making time and an effort,
- 10:01Speaker 1: a concerted effort, intaking a lot of water, getting to
- 10:05Speaker 1: bed early, prioritizing recovery. If you have access to things
- 10:09Speaker 1: like foam rollers or a thera gun or something like
- 10:12Speaker 1: Norma tech boots, giving yourself time and grace to use
- 10:15Speaker 1: these tools as you feel necessary. Also making sure to
- 10:19Speaker 1: stretch and all that good stuff as for the day
- 10:22Speaker 1: before the night before going into it, having a great
- 10:25Speaker 1: meal on deck, and really setting aside everything that you
- 10:28Speaker 1: can so the morning of your effort, the morning of
- 10:31Speaker 1: your big race doesn't need to be unnecessarily stressful. Now
- 10:35Speaker 1: is your time to trust the training, trust the process,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and know that you have all of the tools you
- 10:40Speaker 1: need at your disposal to show up and do good.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Go get them. Hey, Emily, this is Christian. My question
- 10:49Speaker 2: would be what would you look for in a business partner?
- 10:52Speaker 1: What an interesting question because I've never entirely thought to
- 10:56Speaker 1: myself like I am so ready for a business partner,
- 10:58Speaker 1: although I'm sure by now I can certainly I can
- 11:01Speaker 1: definitely use a little bit of help anyway a business partner.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I am a firm believer that you need to surround
- 11:09Speaker 1: yourself with people that challenge you to be better and
- 11:12Speaker 1: someone that's better at things than you. So my ideal
- 11:16Speaker 1: business partner would be someone that has talents that I
- 11:19Speaker 1: do not, someone that I can constantly learn from, and
- 11:23Speaker 1: in addition, someone that inspires me to be a better
- 11:26Speaker 1: version of myself by both encouraging me celebrating my wins
- 11:30Speaker 1: and allowing me to build them up in return. And
- 11:42Speaker 1: taking a break from today's episode to bring you something really,
- 11:46Speaker 1: really exciting. Hurdle has a new sponsor. Welcome Gooder to
- 11:52Speaker 1: the fan. Y'all, you blew this out of the water.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Last week the hurdlers came out in full force because
- 11:59Speaker 1: they were excited about this awesome steal of a deal.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Gooder, if you.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Don't know about them, is an amazing sunglass company. They
- 12:07Speaker 1: make active sunglasses that are polarized, no balance and perfect
- 12:11Speaker 1: for activity. And the best part about it is they
- 12:14Speaker 1: start at just twenty five dollars. I am a huge,
- 12:18Speaker 1: huge fan of their operation. Blackout mock G's are like
- 12:22Speaker 1: an aviator style that look great both at the track
- 12:25Speaker 1: and running. Errands are going to brunch and Gooder is

- 12:59Speaker 1: good as I would love to see which styles you
- 13:03Speaker 1: are going for.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I know the morning lace up is a huge part
- 13:12Speaker 3: of your morning run routine, but I also notice that
- 13:16Speaker 3: you do that at like six thirty in the morning
- 13:18Speaker 3: or like seven thirty. Just super early props to you.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I'm wondering what happens beyond behind the scenes before that.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Are you stretching, pham rolling, having coffee and breakfast? And
- 13:29Speaker 3: if you have breakfast, like what is it? Or are
- 13:32Speaker 3: you just the kind of girl who like gets up,
- 13:34Speaker 3: laces up and gets out the door.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Morning routine wake up most days naturally unless it's Track Tuesday,
- 13:42Speaker 1: when I set an alarm, although sometimes I get up
- 13:44Speaker 1: without it at the right time. Anyway, I wake up,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I use the bathroom, I leave the bathroom, I make
- 13:51Speaker 1: my bed. Right after I make my bed, I pull
- 13:54Speaker 1: out my journal from my night table and I spend
- 13:58Speaker 1: about five minutes writing that, talking about the past twenty
- 14:01Speaker 1: four hours. I end each journal entry with a positive
- 14:04Speaker 1: moment from the last day. Then I start to get
- 14:10Speaker 1: my act together. What that means is I walk over
- 14:14Speaker 1: to mine espresso. I make an arondio, which is like
- 14:17Speaker 1: a little bit bigger than a shot of espresso. I
- 14:19Speaker 1: don't have the exacercising mass FOD, but it's like a
- 14:23Speaker 1: small cup that bruise. While I put on a sports
- 14:27Speaker 1: bra and whatever other clothing I want to be wearing
- 14:29Speaker 1: for my morning workout, I go over there I pick
- 14:33Speaker 1: up my Rondio, I walk back into my bedroom. I
- 14:36Speaker 1: reach for my Journey to the Heart book. I'll link
- 14:39Speaker 1: to that in the show notes, where I read the
- 14:41Speaker 1: day's passage and then I sip on this while I
- 14:44Speaker 1: do any other small things around the apartment. I also
- 14:47Speaker 1: at this time, that's when I do some sort of
- 14:49Speaker 1: stretching and kind of warm up work. A lot of
- 14:52Speaker 1: times for me in the apartment, that's using something like
- 14:55Speaker 1: a thera gun or a film roller. Also some different
- 14:58Speaker 1: activation exercises that I've done to strengthen my hips, so
- 15:02Speaker 1: that could involve a little bit of kettlebell work or something.
- 15:05Speaker 2: With a band.
- 15:07Speaker 1: After all that is done, then I walk on over
- 15:09Speaker 1: to my pillow. As many of you know well, and
- 15:12Speaker 1: that's the first time I pick up my phone in
- 15:15Speaker 1: the morning is to go and do the lace up.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I do the lace up, I post it to Instagram,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and usually I'm literally posting my lace up to Instagram
- 15:24Speaker 1: as I'm walking down the four flights of stairs and
- 15:27Speaker 1: outside of my apartment.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I go for my run, I do my workout.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I come back and that's when I hit all of
- 15:34Speaker 1: my good things that I look forward to you in
- 15:36Speaker 1: the morning. That's when I make my four sigmatic coffee.
- 15:38Speaker 1: That's when I shake up my athletic greens. This is
- 15:41Speaker 1: when if I haven't yet listened to the Daily, That's
- 15:44Speaker 1: when the Daily is playing in my apartment and just
- 15:47Speaker 1: really getting my day together so I can really set
- 15:51Speaker 1: myself up for the best situation possible. When it comes
- 15:54Speaker 1: to breakfast, every day is a little bit different. Lately,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I've been on a kick of either having a daily
- 15:59Speaker 1: harvest smooth or making avocado toast or making my favorite
- 16:04Speaker 1: favorite favorite post run breakfast, which is oatmeal the steel
- 16:07Speaker 1: cut oats from Trader Joe's with scoob of peanut butter,
- 16:11Speaker 1: a scoopa, jelly and banana, and that's my morning.
- 16:16Speaker 7: Hey, Emily, this is Alsa Gunther sending a message from Rochester,
- 16:20Speaker 7: New York. I'm wondering if you can talk about how
- 16:23Speaker 7: long it took once you started freelancing to become profitable
- 16:28Speaker 7: and how you go about identifying additional streams of income.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Thanks so much, interesting question.
- 16:34Speaker 1: So I would say that I was profitable, I mean
- 16:37Speaker 1: right away when it came to freelancing. From the get go,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I made a list of all my monthly expenses and
- 16:43Speaker 1: knew exactly how much money I had to quote unquote
- 16:46Speaker 1: go find to make sure that I could upkeep my lifestyle.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Never did I allow myself to get to a place
- 16:54Speaker 1: where I would be in the red and instead just
- 16:57Speaker 1: really put my head down and ran after as many
- 17:01Speaker 1: opportunities as possible. So if I knew, say, for instance,
- 17:05Speaker 1: if someone knows that they need to make five hundred
- 17:07Speaker 1: dollars in a month, obviously I live in New York City,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I need to make much more.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Money than that.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But if I knew I had to make five hundred
- 17:13Speaker 1: dollars in a month, there was nothing that was going
- 17:15Speaker 1: to stop me from pitching and going after ideas and
- 17:19Speaker 1: reaching out to people and making contact and just trying
- 17:23Speaker 1: my hardest to get to that place when it comes
- 17:26Speaker 1: to finding alternative sources of income. I mean, I've just
- 17:30Speaker 1: kind of been making my own way here, I feel like,
- 17:32Speaker 1: especially with Hurdle, it's definitely been a lean startup method
- 17:35Speaker 1: for a long time, trying different experiments to see things
- 17:39Speaker 1: that work, things that hit, things that don't hit. Especially
- 17:42Speaker 1: now with the Hurdle sessions, it's an all new way
- 17:45Speaker 1: for me to make revenue and also you know, do
- 17:48Speaker 1: some good and donate to charity and that's something that
- 17:51Speaker 1: means a lot to me. So when it comes to
- 17:54Speaker 1: how I identify alternative sources of revenue, really it's just
- 17:58Speaker 1: homing in on my skill set and thinking to myself,
- 18:01Speaker 1: what can I do with what I'm good at. Of course,
- 18:03Speaker 1: I love connecting with people, so the hurdle sessions are
- 18:06Speaker 1: a really great way to do that. Also, over time,
- 18:09Speaker 1: as I am a podcast host, hosting events and collaborating
- 18:13Speaker 1: with brands felt like a really natural and easy way
- 18:16Speaker 1: for me to make more income. So again, take a
- 18:20Speaker 1: step back, look at what your skill set is, ask
- 18:23Speaker 1: yourself how can I monetize my talents? And then my
- 18:27Speaker 1: best piece of advice after you have that kind of
- 18:29Speaker 1: session of identifying what that might be is reach out
- 18:33Speaker 1: to the people that are doing the thing that you
- 18:34Speaker 1: think that you might be able to do and ask
- 18:37Speaker 1: them about it. Ask them if you could just have
- 18:39Speaker 1: five or ten minutes of their time. Go into that
- 18:42Speaker 1: time period with specific questions so that you can get
- 18:45Speaker 1: the most out of this time. Be gracious with the
- 18:48Speaker 1: fact that they may be willing to offer you their time,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and then learn, implement and see what happens from there.
- 18:56Speaker 5: All right, here's a question. So I admire your consistent
- 19:01Speaker 5: workout routine and I would like to develop that for myself.
- 19:05Speaker 5: But I feel like every time I do it every day,
- 19:08Speaker 5: I wind up either too sore or too tired. So
- 19:12Speaker 5: how to develop that and how long did it take?
- 19:15Speaker 5: What's some pointers?
- 19:17Speaker 1: I would say that I have been a pretty consistent
- 19:20Speaker 1: morning exerciser for the last four or five years of
- 19:26Speaker 1: living in New York, definitely since I've lived on my own,
- 19:30Speaker 1: and I've made it a priority. If you are not
- 19:33Speaker 1: willing to make your morning workout routine a priority, it
- 19:37Speaker 1: will not happen. You have to want to be a
- 19:41Speaker 1: morning exerciser to make it happen. Also, on this note,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I mean when it comes to consistency, eliminating the things
- 19:47Speaker 1: that could be standing in your way from a barrier perspective.
- 19:50Speaker 1: So if you are like, oh, I hate picking out
- 19:53Speaker 1: my clothes in the morning, then you pick them out
- 19:55Speaker 1: the night before. If you're like, oh, I can't move
- 19:57Speaker 1: without my coffee, making your morning coffee as easy as possible,
- 20:01Speaker 1: maybe get something to assist in that, like an espresso,
- 20:04Speaker 1: which does it for you that you don't even need to,
- 20:06Speaker 1: like put your coffee beans in anything if you want
- 20:09Speaker 1: to make the excuse that you don't like activity A
- 20:12Speaker 1: or activity B. If you don't like doing yoga, then
- 20:15Speaker 1: try running. If you don't like running, then try dance cardio.
- 20:18Speaker 1: If you don't like dance cardio, then get a kettlebell.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I mean, there are so many options when it comes
- 20:23Speaker 1: to your mornim workout routine and to stick with it.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I would also suggest diversifying your training right. So, yes,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I love running, but I also try to add other
- 20:33Speaker 1: activities into the mix that encourage me to try something new.
- 20:37Speaker 2: This morning, I did yoga.
- 20:38Speaker 1: On Tuesdays, I go to the track on Wednesdays, I'll
- 20:41Speaker 1: do some sort of a like base mileage run. On Thursdays,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I do a tempo run. Friday, I try to bike.
- 20:46Speaker 1: On Saturday, I'll do a long run. On Sunday, I'll
- 20:49Speaker 1: take a rest day. So, as you can see in
- 20:52Speaker 1: this kind of me spitting out what I'm doing during
- 20:54Speaker 1: any given week, there's a lot of variety in it,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and that variety keeps me interested. And when all else fails,
- 21:01Speaker 1: think about how you feel once that activity is done.
- 21:04Speaker 1: For me, I know how good it feels to start
- 21:08Speaker 1: my day off by moving my body. I know that
- 21:10Speaker 1: I am more productive throughout the day, I feel more
- 21:13Speaker 1: like myself, and I just feel more capable. So on
- 21:17Speaker 1: those days that I may not want to get out
- 21:19Speaker 1: of bed, I ground myself by thinking about how it
- 21:22Speaker 1: feels once the effort is complete, and that truly is
- 21:26Speaker 1: what gets me out the door every single time. One
- 21:30Speaker 1: last tidbit I do want to touch on. I know
- 21:32Speaker 1: you mentioned getting sore. It is super important to make
- 21:35Speaker 1: sure that you are listening to your body, that you
- 21:38Speaker 1: are giving it the attention that it needs, making time
- 21:41Speaker 1: for recovery things like normal tech boots, foam rolling, faira.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Gunning baths.
- 21:46Speaker 1: All of this is part of my regular routine and
- 21:49Speaker 1: sometimes it's the stuff that you're not seeing on social media.
- 21:52Speaker 1: So make time to take care of you and you
- 21:55Speaker 1: will be more prepared to wake up and get after
- 21:59Speaker 1: it as you please.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Hi, Emily, Over the years, I've seen you fight back
- 22:03Speaker 6: from running injuries, and each time it seems like you
- 22:06Speaker 6: come back faster and stronger than before. I was wondering
- 22:10Speaker 6: if you could talk about how you've dealt with the
- 22:12Speaker 6: emotional side of running injuries. Have you staying motivated while
- 22:17Speaker 6: you've been injured and if you ever felt like just
- 22:20Speaker 6: giving up on running while you couldn't run.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Thanks on the injury note. If you haven't listened to
- 22:28Speaker 1: Emily Enfeld's episode of Hurdle yet, I highly highly encourage
- 22:33Speaker 1: you to go check it out. It's episode one thirty one.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Listen.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I have definitely definitely been on the injured list, and
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think for me on the mental side of things,
- 22:44Speaker 1: what helps me cope is being really appreciative for how
- 22:49Speaker 1: far I've come and understanding that whatever injury I might
- 22:53Speaker 1: be going through at any given time, there is opportunity
- 22:57Speaker 1: and options within that. Earlier this year, when I was
- 23:01Speaker 1: navigating some hip wonkiness, I took to walking and I
- 23:05Speaker 1: actually wrote about this for Runners World, and the beauty
- 23:07Speaker 1: that I found in that opportunity and the time that
- 23:10Speaker 1: I felt like I was able to reclaim for myself
- 23:13Speaker 1: even if I wasn't getting out in the way that
- 23:15Speaker 1: I was used to. Right now, I have a black
- 23:18Speaker 1: and blue toe. Just one day of like me deciding
- 23:21Speaker 1: that I shouldn't go out for a run was enough
- 23:24Speaker 1: to remind me of what it's like to truly be
- 23:26Speaker 1: on the bench and be on that injured list. And
- 23:29Speaker 1: I had to have a moment this morning with myself
- 23:31Speaker 1: where I checked myself. I felt myself being really frustrated
- 23:36Speaker 1: that I wasn't going through my normal motions and going
- 23:39Speaker 1: through my normal routine. And I sat down and I
- 23:43Speaker 1: grabbed my journal and I made a list of fifteen things,
- 23:47Speaker 1: fifteen that I am grateful for. It's not easy to
- 23:53Speaker 1: grab hold of that perspective. It's not easy to stay
- 23:55Speaker 1: positive when things aren't going as you'd hoped, or you'd planned,
- 24:00Speaker 1: or you'd wish that they would be. But the reality
- 24:02Speaker 1: is is that we have the choice to figure out
- 24:06Speaker 1: how we want to manage and deal with our thoughts.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And our thoughts do not necessarily dictate our feelings. We
- 24:13Speaker 1: have control over our feelings. So this morning, during my frustration,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I checked myself, I grabbed back hold of control, and
- 24:24Speaker 1: I decided to find the gratitude and the positivity instead
- 24:28Speaker 1: of dwell on the thing that I cannot control. If
- 24:31Speaker 1: we focus on the things that we cannot change, that
- 24:33Speaker 1: does not serve us period. So what did I have
- 24:37Speaker 1: control of? I control of how I felt, I control
- 24:40Speaker 1: of my next move. And so instead of sitting there
- 24:43Speaker 1: and moping, I did a peloton yoga class and then
- 24:46Speaker 1: I biked and got coffee at my favorite coffee shop.
- 24:50Speaker 1: None of that bothered my toe. Everything was okay, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: I felt better for doing both of those activities, even
- 24:56Speaker 1: if neither of them was my go to. Again, I
- 24:59Speaker 1: know that being on the injured list sucks. It sucks hard,
- 25:03Speaker 1: but there are things that you can do at any
- 25:06Speaker 1: given time, although it might not be how you wish
- 25:09Speaker 1: things would be, to get through it and be better
- 25:12Speaker 1: for it. If you are listening to this and that
- 25:14Speaker 1: really resonated with you, I definitely encourage you to check
- 25:17Speaker 1: out one of the Handling Hurdle Moments Hurdle sessions.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I'm hosting one in October seventh.
- 25:22Speaker 1: It's a huge part of what we talk about in
- 25:24Speaker 1: there is learning how to show up to challenge and
- 25:26Speaker 1: emerge on the other side and more positive person. This
- 25:30Speaker 1: was really fun. Thank you all so much again for
- 25:32Speaker 1: just being a part of my community. I appreciate you
- 25:36Speaker 1: in ways that I cannot always articulate, and I just
- 25:40Speaker 1: feel really grateful at Emily Body at Hurdle Podcast.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Another Hurdle Conquered. Catch y'all next time.
