- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop Question of the
- 0:31day. What makes you fly off the
- 0:33handle? I'm not talking about specific
- 0:36incidences that aggravate us and cause us to lose it.
- 0:40I'm talking about why do we lose it to begin with?
- 0:42What's the reason we can't keep our cool?
- 0:45What's the reason that we all of a sudden find ourselves in
- 0:48emotional turmoil and in a reactive state?
- 0:52How do we get there? For most people, I and when that
- 0:56subject comes up, they'll often say to me, I don't even
- 0:59understand why I lost my cool. And when you start to explore
- 1:05it, you know, obviously we're not talking about people who
- 1:09have, you know, anger disorders and things like that.
- 1:12We're just talking about common people losing their cool.
- 1:15What's the reason? And for me, in the work that I
- 1:20do, I hear so much of this and I get the privilege to dive in and
- 1:26see, OK, what is what is the reason why is what is my general
- 1:29observation. So just from the standpoint of
- 1:31someone who does this all day, every day and listens to people
- 1:35talk about it, I really do believe that the reason most of
- 1:39us lose our cool is not because of one thing.
- 1:43It's because of a stacking event.
- 1:44It's because of everything. So stacking events are just
- 1:48things that seem to keep building upon ourselves.
- 1:52So we, we've often heard that phrase, it's the straw that
- 1:55broke the camel's back. Well, you know, the straw is
- 1:59only but how much does a straw weigh?
- 2:01Next to nothing. But when there are bunches of
- 2:04straws piled up, they become heavy.
- 2:07It's just like a Bale of hay. You know, I, I haul bales of hay
- 2:10and bales of straw out here all the time and they are heavy.
- 2:14Individually, they weigh nothing.
- 2:16But when they stack up on top of each other or they're put
- 2:18together in a Bale, it's heavy. And that's exactly what happens
- 2:22in our emotional world. So it's not the fact that the
- 2:26dishes weren't put in the dishwasher or somebody ate the
- 2:31last cookie. It's the fact that that's the
- 2:34ten thousandth time it's happened and it's been discussed
- 2:37and it keeps happening and we stack up things because we hang
- 2:42on to things emotionally and when we hang on to things, they
- 2:45become heavy. So if you're carrying around
- 2:47that weight of what it has meant every time, not the specific
- 2:51incidences, but what those specific incidences meant in
- 2:55those moments. And we don't let go of them
- 2:57readily because we don't let go of them readily.
- 3:01They start to weigh on us over time and then we almost just
- 3:05wait for the next event to happen.
- 3:07I mean, come on, we've all done it.
- 3:08We've all stand there and said, well, I know they're not going
- 3:11to do this or I know they're not going to put their shoes away,
- 3:13or I know they're going to be late.
- 3:15One of my biggest pet peeves with one of my children is the
- 3:19being late thing. And it drives me insane and I
- 3:24have to let it go every time because I know it's going to
- 3:26happen each and every time or I've got to get a better
- 3:29strategy for dealing with it and changing it.
- 3:32But the truth is, it's the stacking event.
- 3:35So recognizing that is incredibly important into the
- 3:40change of it because you can't change it unless you recognize
- 3:43it. It's just like everything else
- 3:45in the world. So once you start changing
- 3:47something in your mind, you can actually change it externally.
- 3:51So how do how do I personally shift stacking?
- 3:54Let's go back to that late moment when I was talking about
- 3:57one of my children in the Late Factor.
- 4:00So for me, it's instead of anticipating and saying, okay, I
- 4:05know this is going to happen, I'm going to get frustrated,
- 4:08blah, blah, I just go, okay, I know that that's a potential.
- 4:11I don't say it's going to happen.
- 4:12I just say it's a potential. And So what are the potential
- 4:16ways I can act to handle it? Well, quite honestly, I've just
- 4:20learned over time that the most important thing I can do is just
- 4:24tell her that it's an hour earlier.
- 4:27I can just tell her it's an hour earlier and then it was supposed
- 4:30to be. And then all of a sudden, boom,
- 4:32it's different. It's an easy way to fix it.
- 4:35When they're late, they're actually right on time.
- 4:37And I, I get my needs met because I feel that the timing
- 4:43is correct and there's no harm, no foul.
- 4:47So some people might say, well, that's not being truthful and
- 4:51they should be respectful. And yes, all that's very true.
- 4:53But the reality is that's not how it works.
- 4:56And that's not what happens. What ends up happening is I just
- 4:59get frustrated. And there's so much of this that
- 5:04you can learn from because I know I can fix it by doing
- 5:08something simple. So the point is when you can
- 5:12take control, you take control. If it's something that you can't
- 5:15take control over externally, you can take control of how you
- 5:18feel about it. So there are plenty of other
- 5:20things in my world where it, it irritates me.
- 5:23Like right now, my, my garden is irritating the heck out of me
- 5:27because of the heat and because of the lack of rain.
- 5:30It's all just going down quickly.
- 5:33So I could get aggravated every time I walk by it, or I could
- 5:36just focus on it, say OK, rather than stacking up every single
- 5:40time I walk by it and just making it worse and worse.
- 5:43I go, Nope, stop. This is where we are.
- 5:45I'm letting it go. I'm letting it go.
- 5:47I just keep telling myself I'm letting it go.
- 5:50So just ask yourself that question, figure out what's the
- 5:53best way for you out of it, and start the path because it's
- 5:57work. It takes effort, but it can
- 5:59happen. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:01you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:04Bye.
