- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, welcome to the MMQD NFL podcast.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Conor New Jersey, and over there, wearing the hotty smile of an Ohio State grad is Albert Brear, we're not going to talk about it.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Pleasant Indiana was bad news, but I guess he has some perspective on that.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's all relative, we're going to skip over a majority of our
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: Typical college football banter today.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure all of you are waking up to the news of Shrown more like we are Followed it a little bit last night before I went to bed.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to make a comment on this because the size and the scope of this thing
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: feels very large.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so until I know exactly the facts in this case, but all I could say is what's out there does not seem to be.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, one thing I will say like, and you know, you're going to imagine one of my tech groups look like last night, but um, you know, I, I did think about from this perspective.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, can you imagine like 48 hours ago, you're in a
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you've got like your careers in a good spot.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: You're making your way and now maybe you have to move your family.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like wild, just like, and for this reason, you know, it's not like, you know, it's not like one of those like, oh, this is the business we got into, you know what I mean?
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like, which that happens, but as fucking, it's wild, wild.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: speaking of coaching a hard pivot as we as we say hello and we're going to get into we're going to talk Philip Rivers today because as as a 40 well Philip Albert what are we in terms of age range with you and Philip.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: Me and Phil yeah you and Phil how are you?
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: Phil graduated high school the same year as my brother did okay little brother.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: So you could be a grandfather, too, is what you're saying.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I'm less than two years older than him, though, because he just turned 44.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm on the older side of 45.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good ad, putting it.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: So while we talk about coaches and moving and change, I will just use this time to plug very quickly.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: So today, went live our MMQB future head coaches and coordinators list a big undertaking.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's, we try to cut down on the amount of names.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: We try to make the club a little bit more exclusive this year, but Albert, as we get into,
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: December and January.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: There could be nine openings again.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm really quick.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: Let me, let me say this because you won't say it yourself.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: Connor puts a ton of work into this and I really think everybody who's listening here should check it out because it really is in a lot of ways what the league thinks, which I think is like the most informative way to do these things.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's not just
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, like, let's look at the top five offenses in the NFL and pluck their coordinators off of it.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's a lot of what goes into it.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: And like, I think Conner's always done a good job of having a pulse in the way these things are going.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like a lot of times you've picked out one or two that you think are good names.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: One of them we're going to talk about here.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: I know you were early on with Shane Steiken.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're going to talk about him here in a second.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, obviously you were on target with that.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I appreciate that and I feel like last year, you know, every year you want it to be kind of like, like when Mel Khyper does his top-hundred.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: He wants to get as many out of that top-hundred as possible.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: And so I'm looking at this as, let's say we have nine openings.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: So that's nine head coaches and that's 18.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: court plus 18 coordinators and then plus all of your 36 of your sub coordinators you run game coordinators in your passing game coordinators right and so I want to get as many of those as humanly possible will see how it goes and they track along and last year I got f by freaking Brian Shottenheimer I'm just going to say that as well like those things are hard to because like it's
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you're working through it.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, like honestly, like you, you get to the point where you're building up relationships with people where people get mad at you for being left off.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but if you're going to be honest about it, you have to be honest about it.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: And like I always say to people like,
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: like you know you people joke with you like oh this is a source list it's not you don't I mean like it's it's like legitimately what I think the league is looking at like and that was my goal you know my always been my goal I do a GM list you know just yeah here next month and it's always been my goal it's like this should be the list that a team president is looking at you know what I mean like this should be like when a team president sits down it's going to hire general manager like
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: this should like look a lot like the list that he's looking at and you hope you get to the point where eventually they do look at them which I I know people do look at your your list corner and it's um but yeah I mean you have to you know there's an honesty that comes west at this kind of
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: you know, when you're calling it down and trying to make it realistic, that can be tough.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that's part of the whole deal too.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: It is an encourage everybody to to give it a read.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: Give it your your thoughts score along with me at home as I slam my head into my desk every time a coach who is not on this list gets interviewed and then I hear from someone in the like, oh, you put 42 names on the list and you forgot about this guy and then yeah, I just want to
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I've had coaches tell me they used it for motivation before, and GM's too.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm glad that I was able to provide both more material for people.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're like the vague national media that Nick Saben used to use to dial up the crimson tide.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: Rat poison.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get into it.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: So this is delightful.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: Philip Rivers signed with the Colts.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: This is just the best, and let me tell you why.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Two of my favorite things in sports are late round Notre Dame quarterbacks, and me just playing a game in my head where I imagine a world where they succeed.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: way over the hill athletes and the cults have it all baby.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: We got Riley Leonard sitting behind Philip Rivers and this is my dream quarterback room.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: If I could build a dream quarterback room, this is it right now.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: We got a 44 year old Philip Rivers.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know they have a relationship too, which is like unbelievable.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: Philip Rivers trained Riley Leonard.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right, because Philip Rivers
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to get to that in a second because you have some nuggets on how it came together.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think I have some nuggets on how it came together and the only other thing I'll say about it is this because it reminded me of this one thing that is one of my favorite days in sports.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: And everyone I've come across has known this about me like I just love old athletes like 40 plus year old athletes.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's an amazing thing.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: and I was backing up on the Yankees beat once and backing up means your main reporter is on vacation or has to do something in his kids so you get thrown into the fire you're 21, 22 years old and I walk into the Yankees clubhouse and it was right after the trade deadline in like 2010, right?
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: that year they signed like a 42-year-old Lance Berkman, like a 44-year-old Carrie Wood.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: And like there was like two other guys who were like on all star teams when I was like 11 years old.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I just shit a brick.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: That was the best time of my life.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like that's how.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe someone's having that moment in the colds locker room right now.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: So good for them.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is very exciting.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably used to be, I can't remember the...
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably used to be so full of guys like this.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: That like there was a character in Major League.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm always his name hold on.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: Um, not Roger Dorn.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, the picture.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: The picture who said, uh, Like bartender Joe Boone needs a refill.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: He was played by an acting teacher that actually taught classes in Scranton.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: There were so many great characters in that movie, who, Eddie Harris, yes, yeah, Eddie Harris.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: So he was the old guy who, like, and he told Vaughn to, like, put Chris go and, like, vagicyl on his, like, yes, to hide it in the Snyder's Jersey and then turn on.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but baseball was great with that.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: I remember like I mean, obviously Nolan Ryan I think will be the ultimate example, but like Phil Negro didn't he last forever, right?
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, like there were the knuckle ballers were always the ones, right?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like so Tim Wakefield got rest his soul.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: He pitched into into his 40s.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like so those are the guys that lasted, but his quarterbacks in the NFL, you know what I mean?
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: Like it is and it's
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was actually one thing I love about stories like this is like doing the quick research to see like, is this happened before?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: And my mind immediately went to Steve DeBerg and it turns out like Steve DeBerg's story was pretty close, not identical, but pretty close and that he played until 1993 retired and then came out of retirement to play for Dan Reeves
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: and in 1998, so he signed in 44 years old in 1998.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: The difference is he had a full training camp, but Steve DeBurg did do what Phil Berber's has done, which is five years off and returned at 44.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: Man.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is like the my wife and I's kid pace like we had our kids and then we took five years off and we had one and let me just say if it's any similarity to fill up rivers the fast balls are a little bit faster.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, just to just to give people like a little perspective on that Steve to broke so Steve to burn came back that was the summer I went to college 98 right that was when he came back okay.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: He was the veteran quarterback who Joe Montana beat out as a young quarterback in San Francisco before I was born.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: So he was the veteran on the team that Joe Montana wound up taking over and then in 1998, there he was still around.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: So shout out to Steve DeBurn, it's pretty incredible.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: So the quote here from Philip Rivers, I know there's risk involved, obviously, with what may or may not happen, but the only way to find out is just to go for it.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: I felt it was another opportunity to go play and cut it loose with the guys and play.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: the game you love.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: So how this came together Albert is pretty obvious.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: I remember doing that story.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: You mentioned, you know, talking about Shane Steiken.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: I remember profiling him ahead of, at the beginning of the season, ahead of the year that he got the head coaching job.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the people I talked to was Philip Rivers.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: And he said that he had never quite had a mind meld with a coach like he did with Shane Steiken.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: And how it went was,
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: And they would not digest film in a typical way.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: They would go on the plane and they would decompress and then Philip Rivers would get into his car and he'd start going home and Shane Steichen would get into his car and he'd start going home.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: They'd call each other and they'd essentially rehash the entire game from memory without photographic evidence because that's how like dialed in they were to the process.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Philip was one of the guys who really stood on the table for Shane is a coach because he's got that really strange throwing motion that I think that we've all come to love and Shane was the first coach to have ever built that in to To the way that he called plays so he's like I took a lot of calls out of the playbook because I just knew he would sit there and pretend to throw like Philip and be like I don't think he can make this throw
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he would want to make this throw because it's not comfortable from this position.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: The two of them are really close.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: They talk all the time.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: And that's how, like, at least from my perspective Albert, that's how that came together, but I know you know even more than that.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it's interesting because so from people don't know, I'm first of all, the first thing I want to say here is, I think this is coming from the most genuine place because if you've been around the whole river, like this is just about Philip River's loving football and one of the reasons why Philip, I remember having this conversation with Philip right before he retired was like a part of the timeline of him retiring was so he would be able to coach his sons
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: when they were playing high school football right that was his timeline because he played for his dad again that's a really genuine thing you know yeah he's gotten to do that now um his dad was his high school coach now he's his son gunner who's one of the top high school quarterbacks in America he's his high school coach so
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: the my Steve DeBurg scenario right from earlier would not have worked.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Philip does this if it's a seven month commitment because I don't think he wants to walk away from coaching his son, you know what I mean.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: So this was sort of I think a perfect storm from Phillips perspective of you mean, all right, so my high school season's over.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: I could just come in and play football for a month.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like signed me up, you know what I mean like, and so the way this went down, it was actually like kind of a product of some circumstances in Jacksonville.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: So they come off the field in the locker room, Riley Leonard tells Shane like, hey, you know, like my knee is my knee is really bulky and sore and Shane's kind of I think Shane was kind of at the point where it was like, oh God, what else is it going to go?
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I just have my starter, pop as Achilles, my former first round pick needed surgery because he got hit with a giant rubber band and now like I had, now I'm now dealing with this.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: So they actually got delayed out of Jacksonville.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: There was a mechanical issue with their charter so they had to bring a new plane in.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: So the team was delayed at the stadium and we're waiting at the stadium to leave for the
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so that gave Chris Ballard the general manager and Shane some extra time to talk.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: And so, Shane just blurt it out.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what about Rivers?
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Chris like looked at him from the story I heard was kind of like with a weird look like what do you do that?
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so anyway, they get off the plane in Indianapolis.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: When they get off the plane in Indianapolis, Riley says to Shane like, my knees really stiffen up.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: So okay.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: So they circle back, they call fill up.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: And Phillips, like, well, like, if we're going to do that, I ought to, you know, get up there and throw it around for you and see how I feel.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so she's like, we'll want you to sleep on it.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so he sleeps on it.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, the next morning, they talk again.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like,
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm going to like, let me come up there and throw for you.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so they send the plane down to get him in Mobile.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: He lands in India about five.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: They sit down for an hour talking football, like a bunch of them sit down for an hour talking football will fill up.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's like a computer talking about football.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're going through the different pieces of the offense.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, I have one thing in my story where he's like, well, yeah, like you should have upset the protection here and then thrown a swing to JT.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, have you been in our meetings all year?
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, so then they go out and they throw and it was the two practice water severs they have and the equipment guys They're throwing two they throw the full route trees 30 35 throws that checks out They need for a couple more hours after that and then it's like Phillips then they they say to felt will just sleep on it
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, and then, you know, like, uh, they wake up Wednesday morning and fill it's basically like, let's freaking go, you know, and that was it.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, you know, I don't think anybody knows how this is going to turn out.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I, this is my opinion, but like, I, I, I, I, I've covered these things enough.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like, these guys don't know how they're going to feel on a Friday.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: If they haven't done it while after two days of practice, you know, we even went through that with Burrow, a little bit with Burrow, they thought he was going to play on Wednesday and Thursday and then Friday he woke up and he was sore.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: They're a guy like let's give it another week you know what I mean like so I these things these things come up um you know like where like your body doesn't respond quite the way you think it will.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_01]: How is body responding going to respond to being hit you know what I mean like that's Seattle defense if he starts which we don't know that yet but if he starts and he has knocked around a little bit how's body going to react to that there's a ton of unknown here.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I want to emphasize this like there's nothing like weird or this is like a really good story.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: This story is from a good place It's built on a relationship that that goes back 15 years.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's built on a guy's Love for the game, you know what I mean and it's built on a team that's like in a really difficult situation that Need some way out and it turns out Riley Leonard's not as banged up as as they thought he'd be coming out of it on Sunday night Which is good news to
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: So like the cults at least have some options now and if all that Philip Rivers is doing is being an extension of Shane Steiken for Riley Leonard.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's valuable because the more that you can do to reinforce this, the better.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think Riley has said that himself, right?
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's like, he's like, he's like, yeah, it's weird, but it's like it's awesome.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's super awesome, it's like that, well, this was not awesome, but it was like in the TV series Friday Night Lights when JD McCoy gets Coach Taylor pushed out so that his private quarterback's coach can become the head coach of the team.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_01]: so i mean that you know that's a little bit different but same thing that it's awesome that is private quarterbacks coach yeah and it was cool too like listening to like you know like just gathering some stuff and like some stuff i knew from over the years but like they you know those two like fill up and shame talk a couple times a week and
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like, Shane is looking at that high school tape, you know, like, and like, it's like calling out concepts.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, yeah, like, that's razor, you know what I mean, right?
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, it's not the same thing, obviously, because we're talking about high school team versus NFL team, but like, you know, Philip has been like more or less calling Shane's offense.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, obviously a dumb-down version of it, but calling Shane's offense for the last five years as a head coach and in high school football.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: I'll give you one more story because I'm overflowing with them, but do you know how I do the calls on Sundays?
- 18:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I do calls on Sunday nights for those who don't know, like, in my Monday column is the same way Peter did it where, you know, you look for the stories of the day and then you and then you, um,
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: and then you put in requests for I want to talk to so-and-so or so-and-so, or you text them or whatever.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: So like in 2019, Anthony Lynch, that goes to the charge they fired Ken Wizzan Hunt as their offensive coordinator midway through the year.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: And they brought in, and they elevated Shane, who's Shane had been the quarterback's coach.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: And so Bill Johnson was the Chargers, Chargers PR guy.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: And so I reached out to him.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: I remember I was in Foxboro doing like TV down there.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I texted Bill, and I'm like, hey, any chance that I could talk to Phil up about this, like he had a huge game in his first game after Shane became the coordinator.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: those response was something along the lines of like I think Philip would like to talk to you because he wanted to tell everybody what a great job shamed it you know right it's that sort of relationship yeah yeah no it's it's really cool and what I like about it is I do think that there is an element of like yes like with sienna fell um the world is always the sky is always falling the world is always coming down but uh you and i uh reached out to some folks there and we uh i
- 20:26[SPEAKER_00]: Shelby can fly this up for the YouTube version of it.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: We were expressing our excitement to some of the coaches there about seeing Philip Rivers and you and I both got a photo back of Scott Backella from Necessary Roughness, which is and you can see it here Scott Backella.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's like 40 in that movie and he comes back to lead like a college team of misfits or something like that, basically.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: You saw the eligibility somehow, which is always the Hollywood trick, right?
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like any of the old quarterback coming back.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_01]: Wasn't like, I think Shane Falco was a little bit like that in the in the replacement.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't like exactly that, but it was weird because Falco, um, and now I'm going to really get down a rabbit hole because I've seen this movie 800,000 times.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_00]: Falco was younger than the guy that he was replacing because the quarterback of the
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, was Eddie Martel and Martel was kind of like Brett Farve at that point.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like he was like 40 but he was a legend and then Falco As Eddie Martel famously said was not even a husband he was never was he disappeared after the I think it was like the orange bowl or something he was quarterback Florida state they got blown out Then he started cleaning particles off the bottom of a boat which like you know in modern times He'd just be in the XFL or something or Canadian football league, but
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the other quarterback, definitely like one of those like the old like cowboy quarterback is Yeah, it was Caprony right was yes Dennis quade and then obviously what the best example would be
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, what can I think of the god damn jail one?
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: The longest yard, yeah.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Bert Reynolds in the remake is legitimately in that game at like 70 years old.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: I will say though, like before the show we were talking about this, I mean, what a cast.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: That, that, that necessary roughness had.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot that Rob Schneider was in that.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so he's in there, all right, Sinbad was in that in that was alignment in that movie, which is pretty incredible.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I totally forgot about this, but the guy who played Alvin Mac was a linebacker in that movie Lawrence Taylor.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, Dwayne Davis.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: So he's Alvin Mac in the program.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, okay.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: I miss her.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I who played Alvin Mac.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: So like I forgot about that because I remember going back and watching necessary roughness later after the because I love everybody knows me knows like the program is like my favorite movie ever and Alvin like I went back and I was like holy crap like Alvin Mac was playing for Texas state and necessary roughness also.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a Texas state and then he was at ESU.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Some people just have that face, you know, and then you get typecat.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: And he was, but the guy who played like Dwayne Davis was like the perfect movie linebacker.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like 100% like.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: You just, you know, you have that look, you have that feel about you.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: That was a tough storyline from the program too, where he gave his mom the door knocker.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then he said, when I go pro, I'm gonna give you that, I'm gonna get you the house to go with it, and then I think he's covered the knee injury.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, the tough storyline from that one.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: Booby Miles all over again.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: Just one last question before we move on here and just get into a couple of the big games from the weekend.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, let's just say he does start, okay?
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: Seahawks, 49ers, cults, Texans.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: So Mike McDonald, Robert Sala, Lou Interumo, Demico Ryans, and Matt Burke.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's, it's Philip gonna be okay.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, and I'll say this like, you know.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're concerned for now we're concerned for his health.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Flacco.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: is okay.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like Joe Flacco is fine.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Flacco did get his ass kicked by the Texans in the playoffs in a similar scenario, a couple of years ago.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_00]: And Philip, I think if they do this, it's going to be a lot of, we're just getting rid of the ball at the line of skirmish.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: What's our paid manning at the end, right?
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: Remember that?
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: But paid manning was like, if you remember,
- 24:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I remember watching Peyton and the most amazing thing about Peyton in 2015 to me was like, how far ahead do he had to be of everybody else to complete passes?
- 25:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like he had to anticipate it, such an ridiculous degree for the ball to get there and they're not to be two defenders waiting for it.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and I say that like with all the respect in the world, like he figured out a way to make it work when his arm wasn't working anymore.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: you know, so he's older quarterback.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_01]: There is a way for them to do it.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say that like Philips football, I accused off the church where you don't know is like his instincts for the like that's that's one other thing that I think is worth watching because the movement in the pocket the instincts the feel that isn't automatic that that's there.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: And you remember Drew Hansen back in the day, right?
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so when I was covering the cow was I was sort of interested and I remember I was shooting the shit with like a couple of their scouts who had been who were responsible for signing Drew Henson after he watched out with the Yankees.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: So what went wrong with him like he was incredible his last year.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: Michigan and I would have thought he would have been like a pretty competent NFL quarterback.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: And you know what the scout said to me was like he was like yeah, he was like we got him in here and because of that layoff like he had just lost his feel for the game.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I never even thought of that, but he's like it was like, yeah, because he was away from it for three or four years, he completely lost his feel for you know playing in the pocket and the spatial awareness that you have.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: So that'd be something else to watch to with the layoff.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's huge, and feel speed, all of it, I think are of major consequence in something like this.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see, I mean, like we said, it's something that like, I hope it just remains a fun story.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, is he going to lift the cults to the AFC championship game?
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: I doubt it, but I mean, anybody who doesn't
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: anybody who's nearing 40 or is post 40 and gets that taste of being able to compete again and just feel like you're young, you're not going to turn it down.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: Just not.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm there.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm almost there.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: Albert's been there for a decade and he knows what that feels like.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so just saying that's very important.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: And like on my slow jogs that that pavement feels a little different under your feet when you get old or put it that way.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's my experience.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: Let's get into this weekend's games.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: We have really a couple games ranging from like minor impact to major impact.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just start with the Ravens and the Bengals.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: Just because Joe Burro just had his birthday, he seems in very good spirits.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: He can absolutely ruin Baltimore season.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: And since it had his season as effectively over, but this team was good enough to take the bills to the brink.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that they're more than good enough to boat race the ravens in this one.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm very interested to see how that goes.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that they're, I said this on a radio show, I was on this morning.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think the bank was the best team in the AC North right now.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: I know, that's crazy about it.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like the wins and loss or the wins and losses and you pay the price for what we know the way you've played.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: But I objectively would look at this.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_01]: If I was one of the teams at the top of the bracket, and I would seriously say,
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: that will be the team I would fear the most of those three.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: Now maybe they'll change.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens could get their act together.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think, again, their offense has been primary problem, and whether or not they can pull that out of the fire will see.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I, I mean, the Bengals look like the best team, and I are the Bengals favored.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: uh... let me check uh... you keep uh... keep talking to them i i i i mean i just like i look at the way burrows playing outside of the two picks which again that's one of those like how is the play otherwise mislead in situations but like uh... other than the two picks he played really well against buffalo in the snow you know what it means minus three
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, and he played really well against the Ravens before that.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is still one of the five best quarterbacks in football, and you won't move me off of that.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and he did that, and he tore him up without tea Higgins out there, you know, and Higgins is dealing with something again this week, but if he has both those guys, I don't think there's any reason to think, like if the Bengals are locked in,
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: that they won't be able to push the ravens back into deep water if not completely drown them again.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because they, they didn't just beat them.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: They, man, have a lot like that.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, wait.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, can you just imagine, I mean, could they get an eight nine?
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: We've played this game so many times with the Bengals, but you don't want to eat.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: So it's probably time to stop.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think I think it's over.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: But if they beat the Ravens, okay, now the Ravens now the Ravens have eight losses, right?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: And now,
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: You have Miami, Arizona, Cleveland, the rest of the way.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the Ravens mean while have the Steelers, hold on.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Have the Steelers, the Patriots, the Packers, so,
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't impossible, Connor, like it isn't.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: Stop.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, we're not.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: We're not.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's, I can't, I can't do it anymore.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: I really, I truly can.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's like the Bangalore Life Support Podcast.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: The Bangalore Life Support Podcast.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: Very quickly before we get going here.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Zack Taylor at this point, I mean, is this, is this an audition for him as well?
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: At this point, do you think?
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: You mean, like, that he could be gone?
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: I would be surprised just based on the history that organization, now, and I don't think, I think if they were going to make a change, would it be something familiar with, like a fan's Joseph, would it be something Joe's familiar with, like a Joe Brady, you know, I just don't think they're at that point yet.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they've been without their quarterback for most this year, they generally don't
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, so he really did the only thing that would make me think differently is like that they are feeling a ton of pressure to maximize Joe Burrow and they know that eventually it could come to the point and I think we all have this in the back of our head like they need to make sure that this doesn't become a Matthew staffer in the Detroit situation.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and here's what Joe Burrow said yesterday quote, if I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it, you know, I've been through a lot and it's not fun.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: What am I doing it for then he was asked whether it's difficult for him to have fun right now.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: He said yes certainly then he was asked.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: Whether this is football related or personally and he said all of the above.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: He said it's just a reflection on a lot of things I've done and been through in my career.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I've been through more than most and it's certainly not easy on the brain or the body.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just trying to have fun doing it again.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: You could say that he's referring mostly to injuries, but
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: you could also say it's like I'm sick of coming back into this lineup and the team is five games behind the eight ball you know what I mean right and we you know we went to a super ball for god's sake you imagine like if he became available like holy crap you know I mean you're looking at the jets with two first-round picks in the uh so ramps stop it just like come on
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: Seriously, though, I know that I'm a freaking top 10 pick, Connor.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think the Bengals who do it in this draft, I do think the next draft where you could get one of four really good quarterbacks.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think since I might think about it, but yeah, I don't know.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's its own podcast.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about speaking about teams being able to effectively just destroy the other ones hopes and dreams.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: We have chargers and chiefs and
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: how much does Jim Harbaugh absolutely relish the opportunity to step on the throat of Kansas City at this point?
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think the ability to absolutely on life support.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think Kansas City doesn't have the luxury of, like maybe our division comes back to us the way Cincinnati does, you know?
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like so it has to be a wild card.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: There are already, actually, there are already mathematically eliminated.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: So that's not even a question anymore.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: and then you start to look at like the teams that they're going to have to leave for over now it's not over because like I always laugh on people you know declared over it's like well in a lot of years 10 wins gets you into the playoffs and they can still get to 10 wins but they have to win out so you just look at like so who are they competing
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: They're competing with the chargers.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Either the bills are Patriots, whoever's the wild card there.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_01]: Houston or Jacksonville, right?
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: Whoever's the wild card there, Indianapolis.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: So they could still make it.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_01]: but they need to start winning.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: And like that Chargers team, I would give Jim Harba, it's on a credit because that Chargers team has somehow maintained its identity and still winning games this way and they beat the freaking Eagles on Monday and I football the way that they did because they were so resourceful at the end, Cam Heart made a great play on that ball, a Tony Jefferson picking it off.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like that, it just seems like a team that's just,
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: inexplicably figuring out ways to win and they have Hampton back now, you know, so the chargers can spoil the chief seas and and come close to putting themselves in the playoffs because you get the 10 wins again.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now you got 10 wins before to go the chargers are in a really good shape to get in.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: What are you going to mark a book given the offensive line issues?
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: We saw on Twitter a little bit, sort of the, because so Justin Herbert had like a negative 10 EPA in that game, which people were gleefully pointing out.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_00]: And that was one of the most galvanizing and incredible performances that we've seen out of a quarterback.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: I was some bonkers.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: You were the first enough here.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so I did enjoy now I'm I don't I don't think people understand how hard that it like some of the stuff that he was doing like just with the hand in the ball off like how freaking hard that's to do without it with one hand you know
- 35:54[SPEAKER_00]: We've had what Jordan love Carson Wentz, Aaron Rogers, and Justin Herbert, who have at least had to explore the idea and love was doing it of handing the ball off with the other hand, with the same hand that you're throwing with.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that wild?
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, quarterbacks are just going through with this year, man.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I mean, I think this one,
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: It might just be time for Kansas City, you know, New England had that, and New England's gap was different where it was, I want to say, Oh, New England's gap, like the other thing that that protected New England during their gap was they were playing in a horrific division.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody else just fell apart.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_01]: So like their gap was really O8 Brady gets hurt.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: O9, they were not very good.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_01]: They won 10 games.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: The jets came on late and made the playoffs that year.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: But that jets team wasn't good the first half of the year.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: That was Rex's first year.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: They had a rookie quarterback, right?
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: So like they made the playoffs at 10 and 6 and got like vote race by the by the Ravens and the Ravens.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: If you go back, I was at that game.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Flacco had like some grotesque sounding injury where the muscle was torn off his groin or something, barely throw.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: And if you go back and you look at his numbers from that game, he was like four of 13 for like 20 yards and Ray Rice ran for a million yards and that was it.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so that was probably bought the bottom for them.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: Then in 10, they had the draft class where they got McCordy in Grunkowski and Hernandez, and then all, that was their reset.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like was it was 10 when they were really, really young, be traded Randy Moss in the middle of that year.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then you get to 11 and now they're rolling again.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's sort of what the chiefs need is that sort of rejuvenation, sort of draft class, and maybe a couple of that are not acquisitions.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but that might be where they are right now.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and they're not the void of talent.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like they've still got young talent on the roster.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_01]: What guys like Carl Oftis and and Creed Humphrey and Trace Smith and and Tramik Duffy, you know, so there's there are good young players there, Rashi Rice like it's just
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: I would say like a confluence of things have come together to take them down this year and by the way, it is not, it's not my homes, it really is everything else.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_00]: It is, it is, but my homes, we can also say that he hasn't played great, and he had a bad game last week.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's, that both things can be true.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't you agree though?
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like part of that for a quarterback can be a product of knowing how much you've got to do it for the team to win.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_01]: And now you're extending yourself a little bit and that leads to mistakes.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's it's certainly.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I think.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: you're at the mercy of yourself because are you are you going to let that frustration get away from you and we saw some of those arm punk style throws when he had open receivers and we talked about this right yeah that stems from frustration uh and you know i think that sometimes
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: And they've just been in the grinder every week this year.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Two of the next, we're outstanding freaking individual plays to like the Algae here, and then the P tree pick was insane.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: It was, but I think some of them were were bad throws to begin with.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: And even though it was like, Kim trying to squeeze things into windows that weren't there.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: And everyone's saying, well, Kelsea always catches that ball.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: Kelsea is, like, 38 now.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no, it's different.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: He's not, he's not dropping the ball.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, boy.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he's a rice, like, rashi rises out ragesly town.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: But he's still like, they're just still dealing with inconsistency with him.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, totally agree.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we got three more games here I want to talk about.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: Bill's Patriots, what a failure that this is not in any sort of prime time.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_00]: We're like, this game's at one o'clock.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: Just, there's the straight up one o'clock.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: I have to speak this like that.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's got to be a result of like network horse trading, right?
- 39:52[SPEAKER_01]: Don't you think?
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: Probably.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: Well, because NBC had the first game, which didn't seem like that big a deal at the time, but became a bigger deal.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_01]: So the game is on CBS.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: So CBS is like, no, we're not giving NBC a second one of those.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, right.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then CBS and the late window has the Packers and the Broncos.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what that is.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's at Gillette Stadium.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's what do we have here.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_00]: Accuweather says there's going to.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_01]: I believe, right?
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, real feel of 28.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, hell yeah.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's what we're talking about.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is Josh Allen versus a guy who has some baby Josh Allen tendencies, even though I think my Drake may comp his evolved sense then.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm proud of my Drake may come from before this draft.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: I said, just in Herbert with a Josh Allen play style, and I like that, I think that that to me, like I still feel good about that one.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_00]: Josh, maybe maybe just in Herbert and like a slightly more structured offense, but this is going to be a big shot McDermott game, and you don't want to place that on him weekend and week out, but he seems to bring his best from a homes.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: And he always has an outlier game plan from homes that makes life difficult from homes, but now that this quarterback is in your division and he surprised you once before and you've dealt with Josh McDaniels for so long.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to have that same that is the factor of the chess match that I really like here is no doubt.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's Mike Vrable, but there is it and so everything's not a Mike Vrable.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is not a Mike Vrable game.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but this is like so a lot of things are new.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: But Josh McDaniels and Sean McDermott went head to head against each other in the division for five years, right, 2017 to 2021.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: So Sean McDermott had to defend Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels had to defend Cam Newton and Josh McDaniels had to defend Mac Jones and Josh McDaniels.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_01]: So that's sort of like, all right, like you got us the last time.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're gonna empty the kitchen sink on you a little bit.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: you know, I think that that part of it's going to be really, really interesting for sure.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait for that one.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: That one's, it's a measuring stick game for the Patriots.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's sort of a litmus check on the on the bills.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, let's go.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: That one's a big one.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm, uh, I still maintain though that when there is a pattern Broncos is awesome too, because I, so I can see not if you're CBS not wanting to put
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: not wanting to put the Patriots versus that.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: Packers and if you were to reflect it to Fox, Fox has got Lions Rams.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you have kind of a conflicting
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: deal here where the 4 p.m. window and let's talk about both of those.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: But here's why NBC did move out of that.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_01]: NBC has the Cowboys.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's Viking's Cowboys.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: What was the last time the Cowboys got flexed?
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right, never.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_00]: The Cowboys should destroy their reputation like noted.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: Cowboys can be like, Cowboys can be a three in 10 and they won't get flexed.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: And they're good this year, you know what I mean?
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: So they're a good entertainer product this year.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: So you're not going to flex out of that.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they'll come away from the 76 and one, and they'll give their fans, at least something to dream about.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about Colt Cioxas in the 425 window, but we kind of talked about that a little bit.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is going to be in all eyes on a big fill game.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: Packers and Broncos, Jordan loves playing out of his mind.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that the
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: narrative that he's a mistake written quarterback kind of got out of control and I think kind of got away from him.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_00]: He has some goofy outlier plays, but they're not, they're aren't a ton of them.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there is many, it makes it out to be.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: And so, I think this is the perfect chess match game because you advance Joseph on one side.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: You have Jordan Love and Mattel Floor on the other side.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: You're coming down off that gigantic divisional game against Chicago.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited about this one.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just as, this is gonna be fun.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know why I'm excited about this one?
- 44:24[SPEAKER_01]: because I think this one to me is a good chance for us to see just how stark.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_01]: the Denver home field advantage is in this era, right?
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: Because they haven't been good.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: They haven't been this good 10 years, right?
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: And like, I just think if you go back to the day, like to paint Manning, the paint Manning era, you want to go further back to when John L. was the quarterback.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: That was a terrifying place for opponents to go.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's loud there, the altitudes of factor
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: there's just like I think it's one of the most unique home field advantages and sports right like is just everything that an opponent is dealing with going in there and so you know I think we've over the years like we've sort of accepted that home field advantage a lot of these NFL stadiums like the new stadiums their caverns and you know like it's more of a corporate crowd not all that different stuff right like so we've sort of accepted that like home field advantage isn't what it used to be.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: This to me is a, like, you got a Green Bay teen, it's really, really good, and can they operate at a high level in that environment?
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna be really interested to see that because this is the first time again, I think in a while where you're seeing Denver at home in this sort of state's probably in 10 years, right?
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: Probably since the last manning run.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_00]: And listen, Sean Peyton can't count on the run, Green Bay, and Jeff Haffley, one of the reasons he's on my head coaching list and is probably one of the three or four main candidates is that this guy is going, he's got so much to make up for the fact that they don't have a lot of great interior players.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: And that they didn't really build on that in the off season, but they are still really good at shutting down that inside run game.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: The Broncos are gonna have a tough time getting that going.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not like this defense is going to hand them some easy points and this is going to be one of those games Albert that I don't know that necessarily the defense can totally keep a lid on green bay the matchup is just different now Christian Watson is changing the complexion of everything schematically and it's one of those deals where I just I think that this is going to have to be a big Broncos offense game it's like let's see what you got like this has got to be bone nicks and this has got to be a complete offense of performance.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Jeff, I have one of the things he can do well, and especially with the personnel he's got now, is he can make you play left handed, like he's going to make you, he's going to force you to win in a way you don't want to win, right?
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think this week what that means is we're going to heat up Bonix, we're going to
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: try to create some bad, down-and-distant situations for them.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that could mean run blitz in the crap out of them.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: And trying to get them into second and 12.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: But I think halfly is going to do a good job of putting the, and that's the other thing that I love about this matchup is like this is going to be maybe a window into what Bonax looks like in the playoffs.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I think all the way around,
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is one like again, man, I could just, the idea of Denver in December, you know, and it's still like light out when you turn on that game, you know what I mean, even though it's like already dark out here, it's still light out in Denver when you turn on that game, but like over the course the game is getting dark and you have the altitude, like all the different factors is like,
- 47:54[SPEAKER_00]: big games in Denver awesome we got one this week speaking of uh big games and just sort of the right that like a lot of these games are like the right setting we have new England and Buffalo and the snow we have this game this big packer's game out at mile high and you know it could be 80 degrees out or maybe it could be like an avalanche of snow.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: You just never know it's going to happen there but then you have
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: the lions needing to get off their took us with Jared Goff against the ramps.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: That is timing, ladies and gentlemen, like that is beautiful.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't think that Dan Campbell has seen everyone almost unanimously picking the ramps to win this game, you are high.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that this is going to be your Dan Campbell Winston Churchill game.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is the game he's got to
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, yep, and like the lions have they've had the Rams number right since like the last couple years since the lions got good
- 48:51[SPEAKER_01]: so like the opportunity to go in there and I think like what they did to Dallas like we started to see the identity of the old lions like physical and tough and they've been able to kind of get jimmy or Gibbs going do you see a little bit more of Montgomery we saw a little more of Montgomery in the in the game you know gaming in Dallas
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's, you know, the Rams have really leaned in to be coming tough for the last couple years, like quietly have like changed the identity of their team and now they're sort of this tough rugged team, right?
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like where I think was sort of an answer to the Niners owning them over all those years, where they're training camps tougher and they have a more rugged further, the guys they have up front now from Braden, fifth to Jared, verse on the defensive side of the ball and the backs they have with Williams and Koram, like,
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: This, this is like a tough guy game, you know, and so for the Rams, I think it's, do you let the Lions drag you into a dark alley and then can you operate in that dark alley against another really tough team?
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so a little bit of like a playoff preview in that way too.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the same way the Rams get tested by the Niners when they play the Niners, they'll get tested by the Lions.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_00]: The lines are scraped and by defensively, right?
- 50:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, Anne's alone is sick this week too.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: But they're grabbing people off waivers.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think they just got Jalen Mills off waivers and they need depth help and, you know, with, you know, Terri and Arnold getting surgery.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, branch getting surgery.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this team is- Yeah, branch is a huge loss for them.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: And so we can't really
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: it's hard, right?
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: But this is one of those games that makes Kelvin Shepard a folk hero.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't know this by the way, but Kelvin Shepard.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_00]: So he was on my head coaching list as a first timer.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I know that he'll need to do this for a year or two.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_00]: But someone to brought up the fact that let's say that that LSU coach had got or that LSU search had gone sour.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Kiffin stays at Ole Missory goes to Florida.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: I heard that was a name to watch.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that he is on the radar.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a guy that he was paying attention to.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that it's a fail rise for him.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, I didn't, I didn't know him very well.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: Got to meet him over the summer.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: He's really sharp like, you know, I just wanted these guys where you and I feel like that's pretty consistent with like the lines assistance that you talk to the guys that Dan Campbell brings into that building, you know what I mean?
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think like if you really had a chance to talk to Ben or or AG and you didn't know they're track record before like you didn't know like these guys were head coaching candidates.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: You can easily say, yeah, I got to be head coach, you know what I mean?
- 51:43[SPEAKER_01]: very, very much like a potentially coach.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_00]: I agree and we'll see he can have his formative big boy game.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_00]: this weekend, which we'll all keep an eye on.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_00]: And thank you guys for hanging out with us, listening to us.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: I would urge you before you go.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: The Houston Texans have a very funny video where making fun of Kalmick near getting snubbed by CJ Stroud as a high five.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you saw this over the weekend, but CJ Stroud scored failed to high five the owner of the team, and he's just standing there on the broadcast with his hand up.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so the Texans have a video now where Cal McNair is walking through the facility the whole day with his hand up looking for CJ Strowd and so If you look at Cal McNair though, there's so much.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I don't think every owner would be willing to do that.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: There's himself awareness that that's pretty good.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_00]: It is, it's solid.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_00]: Softening the the reputation a little bit there and
- 52:40[SPEAKER_00]: We had to end on a light note guys because the game, you know, when you're talking Michigan football at this point, it feels a little heavy.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you for having another time.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: As always, and I promise Albert's not going to wear a Ohio State stuff again.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: That was merely coincidental.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was like a laundry miss-happ and a shout out to JSM.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: This was his big game, by the way.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: Best receiver in the NFL.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_01]: This is his big, this is his big breakout, 300 yards.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_00]: Albert knew before everybody, but you're losing your great wide receivers coach, so maybe the dynasty will finally end.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: We can't really do it.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: We can't really do it.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_00]: We're still coming.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: Your day is coming, Buckeyes, to be embarrassed.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see you guys on Monday.
