- 0:12Hello, friends, it's Sean here. Happy Tuesday to you.
- 0:16It is not only a new day, but a new month.
- 0:19It is the beginning of April and I hope you are going well as we
- 0:23continue to work our way through this fantastic, fantastic book
- 0:28of John getting to walk around with Jesus, hearing what he
- 0:31does, how he does it, and how the world just does not quite
- 0:35know what to do with him. So how about we dive straight in
- 0:39and continue reading the story as told in John chapter 8.
- 0:54So Jesus, right, he's back in town, goes up to the Mount of
- 0:57Olives for a bit to lay low. But the next morning, boom, he's
- 1:01back in the temple doing his thing.
- 1:03Word gets out quick and people start gathering around, right?
- 1:07Jesus sits down, starts teaching the crowd, you know, real
- 1:10smooth, real calm. Now here's where it gets
- 1:14interesting. The Pharisees and these so
- 1:16called teachers of the law, they come walking in with this woman
- 1:20caught red handed in the act of adultery.
- 1:23You can imagine the scene right? They toss her in front of the
- 1:26crowd like they own the place they go.
- 1:28Hey Jesus, this woman caught in adultery right?
- 1:32The Lord of Moses says we got a Stoner.
- 1:36What's your take on that, huh? They're trying to put him on the
- 1:39spot, you know, corner him, get him to slip up so they can use
- 1:42it against him. Real dirty, like real
- 1:45underhanded. But Jesus, cool as a cucumber.
- 1:49He just bends down, starts scribbling in the dirt, not a
- 1:53care in the world. They keep pressing him, keep
- 1:56asking, like a bunch of loudmouths trying to get a rise
- 1:59out of him. Finally Jesus stands up, looks
- 2:03them all dead in the eyes and says, all right, here's the
- 2:07deal, whoever here ain't never sinned, let him throw the first
- 2:11stone, got it? Then he goes back to scribbling
- 2:16like nothing happened. Real quiet, real calm.
- 2:22Well, friends, being the 1st of April and April Fool's Day, I
- 2:25thought, why don't we start telling this story as written by
- 2:30an Italian mob boss? So there you go, a little bit of
- 2:33a different take, but how about now?
- 2:36We read this chapter as recorded and shared by the disciple John.
- 2:40In John chapter 8, Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives,
- 2:45but early the next morning he was back again at the temple.
- 2:49A crowd soon gathered and he sat down and taught them.
- 2:53As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the
- 2:56Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of
- 2:59adultery. They put her in front of the
- 3:01crowd. Teacher, they said to Jesus,
- 3:05this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
- 3:08The law of Moses said to stone her, What do you say?
- 3:12They were trying to trap him into saying something they could
- 3:15use against him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote
- 3:18in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer.
- 3:23So he stood up again and said, all right, but let the one who
- 3:27has never sinned throw the first stone.
- 3:30And he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
- 3:34When the accusers heard this, they slipped away 1 by 1,
- 3:38beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the
- 3:41middle of the crowd with the woman.
- 3:44Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, Where are
- 3:47your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn
- 3:50you? No, Lord, she said.
- 3:53And Jesus said, Neither do I go and sin no more.
- 4:00Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, I am the light of
- 4:04the world. If you follow me, you won't have
- 4:07to walk in darkness because you will have the light that leads
- 4:11to life. The Pharisees replied, You are
- 4:15making those claims about yourself.
- 4:17Such testimony is not valid. Jesus told them these claims are
- 4:22valid even though I make them about myself, for I know where I
- 4:27came from and where I am going. But you don't know this about
- 4:31me. You judge me by human standards,
- 4:35but I do not judge anyone. If I did, my judgement would be
- 4:39correct in every respect because I am not alone.
- 4:43The Father who sent me is with me.
- 4:46Your own law says that if two people agree about something,
- 4:50their witness is accepted as fact.
- 4:53I am one witness and my Father who sent me is the other.
- 4:57Where is your father? They asked.
- 5:00Jesus answered, Since you don't know who I am, you don't know
- 5:04who my father is. If you knew me, you would also
- 5:09know my Father. Jesus made these statements
- 5:12while he was teaching in the section of the temple known as
- 5:15the Treasury, but he was not arrested because his time had
- 5:19not yet come. Later Jesus said to them again,
- 5:25I'm going away. You will search for me but will
- 5:28die in your sin. You cannot come where I am
- 5:31going. The people asked, Is he planning
- 5:34to commit suicide? What does he mean you cannot
- 5:37come where I am going? Jesus continued, You are from
- 5:42below, I am from above. You belong to this world, I do
- 5:48not. That is why I said you will die
- 5:51in your sins, for unless you believe that I am who I claim to
- 5:56be, you will die in your sins. Who are you?
- 6:00They demanded. Jesus replied.
- 6:03The one I have always claimed to be.
- 6:06I have much to say about you and much to condemn, but I won't,
- 6:11for I say only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and He
- 6:16is completely truthful. But they still didn't understand
- 6:20that He was talking about His Father.
- 6:23So Jesus said, when you have lifted up the Son of Man on the
- 6:27cross, then you will understand that I am He.
- 6:32I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.
- 6:36And the one who sent me is with me.
- 6:39He has not deserted me, for I always do what pleases Him.
- 6:44Then many. You heard him say these things,
- 6:47believed in him, Jesus said to the people who believed in him,
- 6:52You are truly my disciples if you remained faithful to my
- 6:56teachings, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set
- 7:01you free. But we're descendants of
- 7:03Abraham, they said. We have never been slaves to
- 7:07anyone. What do you mean you will be set
- 7:09free? Jesus replied.
- 7:12I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
- 7:18A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son
- 7:22is part of the family forever. So if the son sets you free, you
- 7:27are truly free. Yes, I realise that you are
- 7:31descendants of Abraham and yet some of you are trying to kill
- 7:34me because there's no room in your hearts for my message.
- 7:38I'm telling you what I saw when I was with my father.
- 7:41But you were following the advice of your father.
- 7:44Our father is Abraham, they declared.
- 7:47No, Jesus replied, for if you were really the children of
- 7:51Abraham, you would follow his example.
- 7:54Instead, you were trying to kill me because I told you the truth,
- 7:59which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
- 8:03No, you are imitating your real father, they replied.
- 8:07We aren't illegitimate children. God himself is our true Father.
- 8:13Jesus told them if God were your Father, you would love me
- 8:18because I've come to you from God.
- 8:20I'm not here on my own, but he sent me.
- 8:24Why can't you understand what I'm saying?
- 8:27It's because you can't even hear me, for you are children of your
- 8:31Father the devil, and you do the evil things he does.
- 8:36He was a murderer from the beginning.
- 8:38He has always hated the truth because there is no truth in
- 8:42him. When he lies, it is consistent
- 8:45with his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
- 8:50So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don't believe me?
- 8:54Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin?
- 8:57And since I'm telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?
- 9:01Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of
- 9:04God, but you don't listen because you don't belong to God,
- 9:10the people retorted. You Samaritan devil, didn't we
- 9:15say all along that you were possessed by a demon?
- 9:18No, Jesus said. I have no demon in me, for I
- 9:23honour my Father and you dishonour me.
- 9:26And though I have no wish to glorify myself, God is going to
- 9:30glorify me. He is the true judge.
- 9:33I tell you the truth. Anyone who obeys my teaching
- 9:37will never die. The people said Now we know you
- 9:42were possessed by a demon. Even Abraham and the prophets
- 9:45died. But you say anyone who obeys my
- 9:48teaching will never die. Are you greater than our father
- 9:51Abraham? He died and so did the prophets.
- 9:55Who do you think you are? Jesus answered.
- 9:59If I want glory for myself, it doesn't count, but it is my
- 10:03Father who will glorify me. You say he is our God, but you
- 10:08don't even know him. I know him.
- 10:12If I said otherwise I would be as great a liar as you.
- 10:17But I do know him and obey him. Your father Abraham rejoiced as
- 10:22he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.
- 10:27The people said You aren't even 50 years old.
- 10:31How can you say you've seen Abraham?
- 10:35Jesus answered. I tell you the truth, before
- 10:38Abraham was even born, I am at that point.
- 10:44They picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden
- 10:47from them and left the temple. No?
- 11:00Yes Lord, the devil is the father of lies and we know only
- 11:05too well that these lies are presented to us all through
- 11:09every day of our life that the world whispers to us.
- 11:14Whispers that you are 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th and that other things
- 11:20should be our number one priority and that the world and
- 11:24its priorities are our master and that's what we need to
- 11:28follow. That we need to seek our own
- 11:29well being above others. That we need to pursue our own
- 11:33kingdoms and not yours. And that is the way of wisdom
- 11:37and truth. But Jesus, you teach us a better
- 11:40way. You teach us the true way.
- 11:43Help us always to stay true to You, and may our hearts always
- 11:50know when the devil's lies come to us.
- 11:53Our Lord Jesus, give us your wisdom.
- 11:55Give us your truth that it may reverberate in us all through
- 12:00our days so that we know your voice and the voice of the one
- 12:05who is in the world. Jesus, we commit ourselves to
- 12:09you afresh and pray that you shape us and lead us.
- 12:14We pray all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
