- 0:40Speaker 5: So and he's all about you know, the pit TV show.
- 0:44Speaker 5: So he's like excited that he's in the ear. But
- 0:49Speaker 5: he's been waiting for his orders.
- 0:51Speaker 3: So where am I going to go from here? With
- 0:54Speaker 3: these new medical skills I have learned?
- 0:56Speaker 4: And if he's in the Navy, it could be anywhere
- 0:58Speaker 4: in the world.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yes, Now he's graduate and he graduates in August. We'll
- 1:02Speaker 3: go out for his actual graduation in August, but you
- 1:05Speaker 3: get your orders before then. And he's graduating near not
- 1:10Speaker 3: at the top of his glass, but near the top
- 1:12Speaker 3: of his class.
- 1:13Speaker 4: So the further within spitting distance.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah, So the better you are ranked, the better options
- 1:21Speaker 3: you have for where to go.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Well, what they don't let you choose.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Well, so what happens is it's kind of like a
- 1:28Speaker 3: job placement officer comes and says, here are the orders
- 1:32Speaker 3: we have available now.
- 1:34Speaker 5: So it's not just choosing.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Wherever you want to go, it's these are the open
- 1:38Speaker 3: positions that are available. And I said, okay, what, well
- 1:43Speaker 3: what position? Where were your choices and he said, well,
- 1:46Speaker 3: on the list was Greece.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Oh so he does get to make some choices, some.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Choices, Yeah, Greece, he could stay in San Diego.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Okay, Poland now you don't know, don't do that.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Yeah, and then and.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Then the one that he picked, So his first pick
- 2:04Speaker 3: was Greece, but it went to the guy that that
- 2:07Speaker 3: was the one that everyone went, oh, I.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Want went to the guy who was on the top
- 2:11Speaker 4: of the class.
- 2:12Speaker 5: And I shouldn't say, God, I don't know, could.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Be a woman. I don't know.
- 2:15Speaker 5: He had men and women in his class.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Say the person.
- 2:17Speaker 5: The person, Uh okay.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I'm like okay, I'm like, well, I know you didn't
- 2:21Speaker 3: pick Poland, please tell me you didn't pick Poli.
- 2:23Speaker 5: He's like, no, I didn't pick poland nobody picked. I'm
- 2:26Speaker 5: going to Diego Garcia.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh, it's in the it's in the South Seas.
- 2:34Speaker 5: It's in the Indian Ocean.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Indian. Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 5: If you go to x ninety six dot com slash live, it.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Is an island very literally in the middle of nowhere.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It is bought in the ocean.
- 2:48Speaker 5: It is a thousand miles south of the Maldives. Wow.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Why did he? Uh it?
- 2:56Speaker 3: And the only thing that is on this island is
- 2:59Speaker 3: this military base.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah, that is all that is there.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Why did he pick Diego Garcia, Well, he it was
- 3:07Speaker 2: that or Poland, and nobody picks Poland.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Come a few reasons for Diego Garcia. When he first
- 3:13Speaker 3: told me this, I'm like, you're going to be in
- 3:15Speaker 3: the middle of the I'm never going to see you. Like,
- 3:18Speaker 3: there are no commercial flights in and out this place.
- 3:22Speaker 3: It's your you know, in the back of a navy
- 3:24Speaker 3: cargo ship to to get to and fro there.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Wow.
- 3:29Speaker 3: And he said, he said, well a couple of reasons.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Get paid a little more.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Okay, that's good.
- 3:35Speaker 3: You only have to be there a year really, because
- 3:39Speaker 3: it's like because it's.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So far away. Yeah, it's isolated.
- 3:42Speaker 3: So and after that year you can pick where you
- 3:45Speaker 3: go so really, so you do.
- 3:47Speaker 5: That and because there's nothing to do.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this is we have a map at our
- 3:52Speaker 3: house if you go to x ninety six dot com
- 3:54Speaker 3: slash live.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I put a little pin in the map where it
- 3:56Speaker 5: is in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
- 3:59Speaker 3: On this so you get paid more and there's nowhere
- 4:02Speaker 3: to spend your money on this island.
- 4:04Speaker 5: There's no town, there's.
- 4:06Speaker 4: No well, there's a you know, just the PX.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean there's not yeah, there's You don't
- 4:11Speaker 3: have no gambling, you don't. It is now what he
- 4:15Speaker 3: said about it, And I found this article that made
- 4:18Speaker 3: me feel a little bit better about it. This article says,
- 4:20Speaker 3: what's it like to be stationed at Diego Garcia. It's
- 4:22Speaker 3: the Navy's best kept secret.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It is apparently spectacularly beautiful. And I have a picture
- 4:31Speaker 3: of that as well that Katie White put up so
- 4:33Speaker 3: that it is actually it is white sand beaches, oh wow,
- 4:37Speaker 3: and turquoise blue water, lush, beautiful, you know, tropical paradise.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Diego Garcia was discovered by Portuguese sailors in fifteen twelve
- 4:48Speaker 2: and remain uninhabited until the French began using it as
- 4:52Speaker 2: a Leper colony hole and for coconut plantations in the
- 4:56Speaker 2: eighteenth century. After the Napoleonic Wars, the island was answered
- 5:00Speaker 2: to British control and remain part of Mauritius until nineteen
- 5:05Speaker 2: sixty five, when it became part of the newly formed
- 5:08Speaker 2: British Indian Ocean Territory.
- 5:10Speaker 3: He's like, He's like, it'll be like being on Gilligan's
- 5:13Speaker 3: Island for a year. And I said, oh, then you'll
- 5:16Speaker 3: have random celebrities washing up on shore once and Russian ghosts.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Now there was a there was a native population there
- 5:23Speaker 2: as well, the Chagosians. The Chagosians. Between eighteen nineteen sixty
- 5:28Speaker 2: eight nineteen seventy three, the remaining Chagosian inhabitants were forcibly
- 5:32Speaker 2: removed to make way for a military base.
- 5:35Speaker 3: It's a British or it's not American.
- 5:38Speaker 5: It's a British American. Now what can you do there?
- 5:44Speaker 5: You can fish, you can.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Serve is the sing Cary says he's going to be
- 5:50Speaker 1: treating a lot of alcohol poisoning and fight injuries.
- 5:53Speaker 5: So here's what.
- 5:54Speaker 3: And I'm going to have a talk with Festus about
- 5:56Speaker 3: this because this article I read said if you go here.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Uh so nobody has their family or spouse. These are
- 6:03Speaker 3: all because it's not a family deployment. You either become
- 6:08Speaker 3: a hunk, a drunk, or a monk.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Well, he'll be a hunk, and I'm going I think
- 6:14Speaker 4: it's going to.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Be a drunk monk because the only things to do
- 6:17Speaker 3: apparently are workout, drink or you know, be contemplative and
- 6:24Speaker 3: and you know, think about your place in the world.
- 6:27Speaker 2: You should say that, like, it's either or he could
- 6:29Speaker 2: do all three of those things.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I think he could be a hunky monk, a hunk
- 6:33Speaker 1: monk who likes to drink.
- 6:35Speaker 5: There are feral donkeys on the island ferl.
- 6:42Speaker 3: So. I when he first told me that, I was like, well, okay,
- 6:45Speaker 3: it's not Poland, and I actually feel like he's probably
- 6:48Speaker 3: safer here than anywhere. It's not close to anything like
- 6:52Speaker 3: I don't think it would ever be.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I mean, there are tsunamis and I believe that there
- 6:57Speaker 2: are missiles that could reach there.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And it's it's not far from India and you know
- 7:01Speaker 1: we're getting some problems there.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 6: But yeah, anyway, so, so he's excited. He's excited. When
- 7:12Speaker 6: does he go, well, he hasn't got the official orders yet.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I'm going to see him next weekend, just because now
- 7:18Speaker 3: I'm thinking, what if I don't.
- 7:19Speaker 5: See you for a year. I'm hope.
- 7:22Speaker 3: What I told Joe last night is Okay, he's seventeen
- 7:26Speaker 3: hundred miles from the Maldives.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Maybe he could.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Go to Maybe we can have Christmas in the Maldives
- 7:32Speaker 3: next year.
- 7:33Speaker 5: We can go visit him there. That would be fun.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Well, he could just you know, hoop a water taxi
- 7:38Speaker 4: and go see you.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I well know.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Somebody says, why I made the joke. Somebody says, Gina,
- 7:46Speaker 3: I had friends whose parents were in the military. They
- 7:49Speaker 3: lived in Diego Garcia and loved it.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Okay.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Diego Garcia is often referred to as fantasy island because
- 7:56Speaker 2: it's so secluded.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Welcome and see.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I would have said Greece if I well, no, that
- 8:01Speaker 3: was his first choice, but because there was somebody ahead
- 8:04Speaker 3: of him, he had to go with next choice.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm looking at pictures of Diego Garcia and it looks
- 8:13Speaker 1: it looks lovely. Yeah, but you're surrounded by military type
- 8:16Speaker 1: so there's.
- 8:16Speaker 5: The drawing, that's all that's there.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, but when you're in the Navy. You're surrounded
- 8:22Speaker 4: by military types. And that's why I made the joke.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, somebody says, my son graduated top of his class
- 8:28Speaker 3: from Paris Island boot Camp and the Marine's got to
- 8:31Speaker 3: pick where he wanted. He's now in the bodybuilding program
- 8:34Speaker 3: color Guard in DC.
- 8:36Speaker 5: That doesn't sound like that, sounds like that a cush.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Yeah, color Yeah, you just have to march.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Well, okay, so I'm I was not.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I was.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I was a little worried and now I'm okay.
- 8:52Speaker 3: There.
- 8:53Speaker 5: It could have been a.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Lot worse, is what. I stayed in San Diego.
- 8:57Speaker 5: But he's like, I want to go. I want to
- 8:59Speaker 5: see the world. I'm in Sandy. He could end up
- 9:01Speaker 5: back in San Diego at the end of this. He
- 9:03Speaker 5: wants to go see the world.
- 9:04Speaker 4: So and he's starting with Diego Garcia.
- 9:08Speaker 3: And I thought when he said Diego Garcia, I said,
- 9:10Speaker 3: is that in the Gulf of America.
- 9:11Speaker 5: It's the only in the Gulf of America.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Well, that's the guy who's gonna play Red Richards in
- 9:15Speaker 1: the Fantastic Farm Diego.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Hello, Sailor Boy.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Tell him that he's got to be careful. Uh, the
- 9:25Speaker 2: only mammals on the island are rats other than humans
- 9:30Speaker 2: and there, Yeah, there are some donkeys, but there are
- 9:33Speaker 2: coconut crabs and they are protected species. Oh you can't.
- 9:37Speaker 2: If you kill a coconut crab, you're in big. Don't
- 9:39Speaker 2: eat the coconut crab. And what makes donkey farrell? They're
- 9:42Speaker 2: just Why are they just me? I wouldn't want to
- 9:46Speaker 2: get bit by one.
