- 0:15Speaker 2: I should know.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I live with him every week. He brings truth from
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Bible, tool some science and stories that will set
- 0:21Speaker 1: your heart on fire. May God bless you to become
- 0:24Speaker 1: everything He made you to be, just one percent better
- 0:27Speaker 1: every single day.
- 0:30Speaker 3: What's up, guys. This is coach Alex ben Houghton. I'm
- 0:32Speaker 3: the Faithful Fitness Podcast. I'm super excited to spend some
- 0:35Speaker 3: time with you guys today and to bring this conversation
- 0:38Speaker 3: to you with Wes Shoy. Wes is one of the
- 0:41Speaker 3: few pastors in the world that I've gotten to brush
- 0:44Speaker 3: shoulders with so far, at least that believe that there's
- 0:48Speaker 3: something important about the intersection of faith and fitness.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Wes, how you doing today, brother dude?
- 0:54Speaker 4: Great? Thanks for having me, Alex. This is awesome.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you for agreeing to jump on here. I
- 0:59Speaker 3: really I do want to start with that question. Because
- 1:02Speaker 3: you're a pastor. I'd love to hear more about your church.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I believe you're operating in Denver, Colorado, and as a pastor. Well,
- 1:12Speaker 3: I have a pastor and I'm also a children's ministry pastor,
- 1:15Speaker 3: so I brush shoulders with a lot of pastors.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It's not normal.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's not normal, not that it's not It could be
- 1:22Speaker 3: good if it was normal, but it's not normal for
- 1:25Speaker 3: a pastor to also be what's the word an advocate
- 1:31Speaker 3: for physical stewardship or in layman's terms, it's not normal
- 1:35Speaker 3: to hear things from the pulpit about nutrition and exercise.
- 1:38Speaker 3: So I'd love to hear first, how did you come
- 1:42Speaker 3: to being a pastor and then at what point did
- 1:44Speaker 3: that cross paths with fitness in your life.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's funny because I didn't start my life thinking, hey,
- 1:52Speaker 4: I want to be a pastor. I came to faith
- 1:57Speaker 4: in my early life, like nine ten years old, and
- 2:04Speaker 4: after that got into some trouble with some friends and
- 2:09Speaker 4: found that there was true forgiveness when you get in trouble,
- 2:13Speaker 4: and that was my actual, I feel like real encounter
- 2:17Speaker 4: with the love of Christ for the first time at thirteen,
- 2:24Speaker 4: I think was when I started thinking maybe there is
- 2:26Speaker 4: something to do with ministry, and I got involved with
- 2:30Speaker 4: a small ministry back in Indiana where I grew up,
- 2:33Speaker 4: and when I graduated high school, I started going to
- 2:38Speaker 4: a local college. But while I was there, I could
- 2:42Speaker 4: really just felt like this is hollow. What I'm doing
- 2:44Speaker 4: is hollow, what I'm learning is hollow. It's not what
- 2:47Speaker 4: I'm supposed to be doing. And some mentors of mine
- 2:51Speaker 4: suggested going to a Christian college, So I went to
- 2:55Speaker 4: a Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, which was a wonderful experience,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and at the same time, there was a lot that
- 3:03Speaker 4: nobody was talking about with me about my body, and
- 3:08Speaker 4: as a result, I gained a lot of weight because
- 3:10Speaker 4: there was a lot of unprocessed stuff that I wasn't
- 3:14Speaker 4: dealing with, didn't even know how to have language around.
- 3:18Speaker 4: And that showed up in my body. It showed up
- 3:23Speaker 4: in what I was eating, It showed up in my
- 3:27Speaker 4: energy levels, it showed up in my general feeling of
- 3:31Speaker 4: well being, and I didn't know what that was. I
- 3:37Speaker 4: didn't know what that was. I graduated from college thought
- 3:40Speaker 4: I was going to go into the military, and I
- 3:43Speaker 4: actually had signed up. I worked so hard to lose
- 3:46Speaker 4: weight alex to get into the Navy, and I had
- 3:52Speaker 4: a six month time between when I signed up and
- 3:56Speaker 4: when I was supposed to ship to boot camp, and
- 3:58Speaker 4: that six months I spent with a missionary in Germany,
- 4:03Speaker 4: sort of interning with him, and the whole time I
- 4:05Speaker 4: was there, I felt like, like the Sawa said, the
- 4:08Speaker 4: hand of the Lord was heavy upon me. I felt
- 4:11Speaker 4: that just this very strong sense that this is not
- 4:16Speaker 4: what you're here to do. You're not here to be
- 4:18Speaker 4: a guy in the Navy. As great as that is,
- 4:21Speaker 4: that's not what I have you for. So I came
- 4:25Speaker 4: back home to Indiana and trying to figure out what
- 4:28Speaker 4: in the world to do with my life, and another
- 4:32Speaker 4: mentor told me, hey, maybe you should check out seminary,
- 4:35Speaker 4: which I thought at first was a really stupid idea
- 4:38Speaker 4: because I just finished college. I didn't want to go
- 4:41Speaker 4: back for more school school right, But that got me
- 4:46Speaker 4: looking into military chaplaincy, and that got me out to Colorado,
- 4:51Speaker 4: where Denver Seminary has an amazing chaplaincy program. And again,
- 4:56Speaker 4: the Lord had different ideas than I did, and I
- 4:59Speaker 4: ended up as a part time worship director at a
- 5:02Speaker 4: local church, just trying to make some money while doing
- 5:06Speaker 4: ministry in seminary. And I'm now for twenty years. I
- 5:11Speaker 4: didn't start off looking to be a pastor, but that's
- 5:14Speaker 4: where I've ended up and it's been an amazing journey.
- 5:18Speaker 4: And along the way, I have learned a lot of
- 5:21Speaker 4: stuff that they didn't teach me in seminary, and they
- 5:23Speaker 4: didn't teach me in church, and nobody in my family
- 5:26Speaker 4: knew about the intersection between faith and fitness. That's where
- 5:32Speaker 4: I am.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Yeah, awesome, awesome, that's such a cool story and journey.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And I'd like to place myself as a father in
- 5:41Speaker 3: your story as well. So you're going to Chaplaincy in Denver, Colorado?
- 5:48Speaker 3: Are you married and a father by then?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Like? Where are you in your journey as a husband
- 5:55Speaker 2: and father? Yeah?
- 5:56Speaker 4: I met my wife at church two years after I
- 6:00Speaker 4: start came to Denver and we've been there ever since.
- 6:05Speaker 4: So I graduated right about the time that our second
- 6:08Speaker 4: child was about to be born.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Okay, okay, yeah, awesome, And fast forward to now, how
- 6:13Speaker 3: old are your kids?
- 6:14Speaker 4: I have a son who's sixteen, a daughter who's thirteen,
- 6:17Speaker 4: and a daughter who's ten.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Okay, awesome, bless you for being a father to daughters.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I have two sons myself, and I'm hoping there are
- 6:24Speaker 3: men out there who are raising awesome daughters so that
- 6:26Speaker 3: they have great wives someday.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But I know nothing about raising daughters.
- 6:30Speaker 4: So it's awesome.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It's so awesome, awesome.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I can see the gleam in your eye when you
- 6:36Speaker 3: talk about them. So it sounds like it sounds like
- 6:39Speaker 3: it's a party at your house. So I want to
- 6:41Speaker 3: talk about this fitness thing. So you had some struggles
- 6:44Speaker 3: early on in not necessarily your ministry work, but personally
- 6:49Speaker 3: with your own body. And this idea that there's a
- 6:54Speaker 3: there's a theological thing here that I'd like to separate.
- 6:58Speaker 3: We cover this and we have a devotion coming out
- 7:00Speaker 3: in just a couple months, and it's called Faithful Fitness,
- 7:04Speaker 3: a forty day devotional for Christian stewardship.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And one of the things that we try.
- 7:09Speaker 3: To tackle in there is is there's this idea that
- 7:13Speaker 3: permeates the church that our spirit and our flesh are separate. Yep, right,
- 7:17Speaker 3: this this idea, And you know, Paul says it. This
- 7:20Speaker 3: is a very famous famous piece that he wrote, Oh
- 7:24Speaker 3: wretched man, and that I am what am I supposed
- 7:27Speaker 3: to do with this body of sin? And he talks
- 7:29Speaker 3: about the war between his flesh and his spirit, that
- 7:32Speaker 3: which I do want to do, I don't do that
- 7:34Speaker 3: which I don't want to do.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I do like what am I supposed to do?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Right and so and so in Christianity and the Church
- 7:42Speaker 3: at large and might be different denominationally, but I've I've
- 7:45Speaker 3: been through several different experiences with several different denominations. That's
- 7:50Speaker 3: pretty it's pretty robust that my eternal spirit and my
- 7:55Speaker 3: fleshly body meat sack, that it's wrapped in right, that
- 8:00Speaker 3: that they're separate, and the meat sacks kind of a
- 8:02Speaker 3: bad thing. It has lots of lots of wants and
- 8:05Speaker 3: desires and and blah blah blah, that that generally contradict
- 8:09Speaker 3: the the good spirit that God has given me in
- 8:13Speaker 3: Christ Jesus, and and like it's easy to wrap your
- 8:17Speaker 3: head around that, right, it's easy to wrap wrap your
- 8:19Speaker 3: head around you know, sometimes I crave things that aren't
- 8:22Speaker 3: good for me. Addiction can can can grab my mind
- 8:26Speaker 3: and my body and cause me to do things I
- 8:28Speaker 3: don't want to do.
- 8:29Speaker 2: You know, you can feel.
- 8:30Speaker 3: That that dichotomy between those two things. But there's also
- 8:36Speaker 3: this idea that Paul also brings to the table, that
- 8:40Speaker 3: that my body is a living sacrifice, a temple of
- 8:45Speaker 3: the Holy Spirit, and and so in in in that
- 8:49Speaker 3: that line of thinking, there there's actually that's actually the opposite.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It's that that my my spirit and my my body
- 8:55Speaker 3: and my mind are connected, right and and where I
- 8:59Speaker 3: see this in the church, I.
- 9:01Speaker 2: See a very a very.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Stressed relationship between an individual's spirit and mind and their body.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And the way it looks is it's very hard to
- 9:19Speaker 3: tell that that in the church we are using this
- 9:24Speaker 3: body that God's given us in a in a stewardly fashion,
- 9:28Speaker 3: where we are we are taking good care of ourselves,
- 9:30Speaker 3: we are being healthy as we know how to be,
- 9:33Speaker 3: we are moving on a regular basis, and and and
- 9:36Speaker 3: challenging ourselves in a way that's positive and beneficial. It
- 9:40Speaker 3: seems like in the church's mind. And I say church,
- 9:44Speaker 3: I don't mean necessarily individuals, but but big c church.
- 9:48Speaker 3: If you listen to sermons, and even sometimes if you
- 9:52Speaker 3: look at pastors who are delivering this these sermons, there
- 9:55Speaker 3: is a separation between taking good care of my body
- 10:00Speaker 3: and what that has to do with my ultimate calling
- 10:05Speaker 3: or my eternal spirit or whatnot. And so I've been
- 10:10Speaker 3: working to wrestle this out personally myself, and I've been
- 10:12Speaker 3: working to wrestle this out in my practice with my
- 10:14Speaker 3: clients and even in my local church.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It sounds like you have been on a similar journey.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Can you talk about when you, as an individual, maybe
- 10:23Speaker 3: not as a pastor or maybe not as a leader yet,
- 10:26Speaker 3: but when you as an individual realized that there was
- 10:30Speaker 3: a connection between my body, the way I'm feeding myself,
- 10:35Speaker 3: the way I'm moving myself, the way I'm resting. That
- 10:38Speaker 3: when you realized there was a connection between your body
- 10:41Speaker 3: and the faith that you professed were called to and
- 10:44Speaker 3: we're practicing on a regular basis.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it came post seminary because in my
- 10:53Speaker 4: doctrinal orals, I had to defend my doctrinal thesis and
- 10:57Speaker 4: at the end of that one of the professors on
- 11:00Speaker 4: panel had said, the one area I think you need
- 11:03Speaker 4: to focus on once you're out of here, do some
- 11:06Speaker 4: more study on, is what does it mean to be
- 11:08Speaker 4: created in the image of God? And that's what got
- 11:12Speaker 4: me going down a pretty big road and when it
- 11:15Speaker 4: came to my theological studies and and unfortunately, what we
- 11:21Speaker 4: have in the West is a very strong Greco Roman
- 11:27Speaker 4: idea of the makeup of the human person. And so
- 11:32Speaker 4: we do get that body bad, spirit good, which is
- 11:37Speaker 4: very platonic. It's also very gnostic, which is a heresy,
- 11:43Speaker 4: right that that this the the body we live in
- 11:46Speaker 4: is bad and the spirit that is eternal is good.
- 11:51Speaker 4: And unfortunately, our our translations, even of Paul, make it
- 11:56Speaker 4: hard for us to see. He's not saying that the
- 12:00Speaker 4: bodies bad, and he's using two very different words sarks
- 12:04Speaker 4: and soma, sarks meaning flesh and soma meaning flesh. But
- 12:08Speaker 4: flesh is that word flesh we throw around a lot
- 12:11Speaker 4: in the Christian culture, like what does that even mean?
- 12:14Speaker 4: When Paul's talking about flesh, he's talking The translation should
- 12:20Speaker 4: probably be old nature, the old nature versus the body,
- 12:25Speaker 4: the physical body that not only I have, but he's me. Right.
- 12:31Speaker 4: God didn't create junk, right, God made what he loved.
- 12:39Speaker 4: He got down into the dirt and with his hands
- 12:43Speaker 4: he formed humanity, this intimate, loving, face to face creation
- 12:51Speaker 4: and breathe life into us. Right, He made what he loved,
- 12:56Speaker 4: and then Christ himself takes on a physical body. He
- 13:01Speaker 4: puts on what he loves, and then the spirit in
- 13:05Speaker 4: dwells our physical bodies what he loves. And when we
- 13:11Speaker 4: read scripture. We're always dealing with translation, right, because we're
- 13:17Speaker 4: taking Hebrew and Greek and Aramaic, and we're trying to
- 13:20Speaker 4: find the dynamic equivalent to the English language or whatever
- 13:24Speaker 4: language is your language, And unfortunately you're making interpretive decisions
- 13:31Speaker 4: while you're translating. You have to, it's impossible not to.
- 13:36Speaker 4: And so even in the Book of Deuteronomy, when when
- 13:40Speaker 4: Jesus says, you know, the greatest commandment is to love
- 13:43Speaker 4: the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
- 13:45Speaker 4: your soul, with all your mind, with all your body,
- 13:50Speaker 4: that's very different in the Hebrew context than it is
- 13:52Speaker 4: in the English context because even the words that we
- 13:57Speaker 4: use that are translated heart love, it's actually it's like
- 14:02Speaker 4: the seed of my emotions and desires.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:05Speaker 4: That's not even my body desiring things, it's me desiring things.
- 14:11Speaker 4: When we talk about our nephesh, which we translate body,
- 14:17Speaker 4: that doesn't mean body, it means being. It means your being.
- 14:26Speaker 4: In fact, in the Hebrew mind, there was no separation
- 14:30Speaker 4: between soul and body and mind. They were all very
- 14:34Speaker 4: interconnected and one, and you couldn't divorce one from the other.
- 14:42Speaker 4: And even that word that we think of as we
- 14:44Speaker 4: hear strength, heart, soul, mind, and strength. That word is
- 14:47Speaker 4: actually an adjective. It means much. To love the Lord
- 14:52Speaker 4: with all your heart, all your desires and emotions. To
- 14:55Speaker 4: love the Lord with all your being, and to love
- 14:58Speaker 4: the Lord with all your muchness is really what the
- 15:02Speaker 4: Hebrew's saying. So it's saying, love the Lord, your God,
- 15:05Speaker 4: with every piece of who you are, and that includes
- 15:09Speaker 4: your body, which is you. Like if I punch you
- 15:14Speaker 4: in the face, you don't take me to court for
- 15:17Speaker 4: property damage. You take me to court for for assault. Right,
- 15:23Speaker 4: it's your body's not a thing separate from you. And
- 15:27Speaker 4: certainly we can talk about my fingers, right, but I
- 15:30Speaker 4: can't talk about my fingers apart from the rest of
- 15:32Speaker 4: my body. And if you hurt me emotionally, the same
- 15:38Speaker 4: center in my brain feels pain. That does when I
- 15:44Speaker 4: smash my finger with a hammer. My body and my
- 15:47Speaker 4: mind and my spirit are so beautifully and lovingly and
- 15:52Speaker 4: creatively interconnected. Really, heart, the body, mind, spirit a try
- 15:59Speaker 4: you being, as our father, son and Holy Spirit are
- 16:07Speaker 4: a tri une being. Now we're not three people, we're three,
- 16:11Speaker 4: three parts in one. That's part of being created in
- 16:16Speaker 4: the very image of the God. We love and serve,
- 16:20Speaker 4: and what happens when I divorce I see my body
- 16:26Speaker 4: as something other. Then it's really easy to worship it
- 16:33Speaker 4: in some contexts, and it's also really easy to obsess,
- 16:39Speaker 4: to neglect, or to abuse it. Because if it doesn't
- 16:44Speaker 4: matter what I do to this body because it's junk, right,
- 16:48Speaker 4: if it's bad, then I can do whatever I want
- 16:51Speaker 4: to to this body and with this body, and that
- 16:55Speaker 4: infects everything.
- 16:57Speaker 3: And I would even hazard to say, because of the
- 17:00Speaker 3: nature that you were talking about earlier, I'm not going
- 17:03Speaker 3: to tend toward positive powerful things. I'm going to tend
- 17:07Speaker 3: toward negative things that when I separate those two is
- 17:11Speaker 3: what you were speaking about.
- 17:12Speaker 2: There made me think there was there.
- 17:15Speaker 3: In the devotional we talk about the discipline of integrity,
- 17:20Speaker 3: an integrity not meaning necessarily I do the same thing
- 17:23Speaker 3: behind closed doors as I do when other people are watching,
- 17:26Speaker 3: or honesty, which are decent definitions when you're trying to
- 17:29Speaker 3: explain what integrity means to a kid, right, but integrity
- 17:33Speaker 3: coming from the word integer, meaning a whole thing, all
- 17:37Speaker 3: put together, all the inseparable part of something. That's integrity.
- 17:44Speaker 3: When Jesus spoke at the end of his sermon on
- 17:46Speaker 3: the Mount. He said, if any man hears my words
- 17:50Speaker 3: and practices them, he will be like a man who's
- 17:53Speaker 3: built his house on a rock, as opposed to a
- 17:55Speaker 3: man who's built his house on sand. Integrity means that foundation,
- 18:00Speaker 3: that inseparable thing. And the reason I speak about that
- 18:04Speaker 3: here is because when when I say to God, I
- 18:08Speaker 3: will serve you, I will follow Jesus. I will walk
- 18:13Speaker 3: in his footsteps. I choose the narrow way. Please teach me.
- 18:17Speaker 3: You know, when I when I pray those prayers, what
- 18:20Speaker 3: I'm also saying is I am going to bring my
- 18:23Speaker 3: whole being under your lordship. There's no peace of it
- 18:27Speaker 3: that gets to be separate from that. There's no piece
- 18:30Speaker 3: of me that I'm not giving to you. I'm giving
- 18:33Speaker 3: my all. So to speak right, and Jesus said this.
- 18:36Speaker 3: He said, no man can serve two masters. Either he
- 18:39Speaker 3: will hate the one and love the other, or despise
- 18:42Speaker 3: the one and follow the other. Right and and so
- 18:44Speaker 3: so in that when when you're speaking and I hear,
- 18:47Speaker 3: I hear, hey, you know that that false idea that
- 18:52Speaker 3: our body and spirit are separate, and this dog on
- 18:56Speaker 3: flesh bag that I've got to deal with, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 3: likes to do things, and I can't quite figure out
- 19:00Speaker 3: how to manage it. You know, uh that that that
- 19:03Speaker 3: that truly is I believe, And if I understand you correctly,
- 19:10Speaker 3: it sounds like you believe.
- 19:11Speaker 2: But you can argue with me if you like. I
- 19:13Speaker 2: believe that's a lie.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I believe it's a lie from the enemy, that my
- 19:17Speaker 3: body is separate from me, and that I'm not really
- 19:21Speaker 3: accountable to or responsible for or in charge of whatever
- 19:26Speaker 3: that does, and and and so you know, I have
- 19:30Speaker 3: my Christian life and my Christian intentions, and my Christian
- 19:33Speaker 3: mind and my Christian spirit, and and this stupid body
- 19:36Speaker 3: of mine. You know, hopefully when I go to Heaven,
- 19:38Speaker 3: I'm done dealing with that garbage.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I believe that that those things come together and in
- 19:44Speaker 3: it actually was. I did not go to seminary, but
- 19:49Speaker 3: it was very apparent to me when Paul, writing in Ephesian,
- 19:52Speaker 3: said that a husband should love his wife as Christ
- 19:58Speaker 3: loved the Church and gave himself for her, and then
- 20:02Speaker 3: further goes on to say as a part of his
- 20:05Speaker 3: own body. And then he says, and no man ever
- 20:08Speaker 3: hated his own body. And here I am as a
- 20:11Speaker 3: nutrition and exercise scientist of many years, going.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I, I don't like.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Arguing with Paul, but like, I've met a lot of
- 20:20Speaker 3: guys who hate their own body, and they might even
- 20:24Speaker 3: say it out loud, But even if they don't say
- 20:26Speaker 3: it out loud, you can see it in their actions,
- 20:28Speaker 3: like showing your food journal, and I will tell you
- 20:32Speaker 3: whether or not you hate your body, not because of
- 20:35Speaker 3: what it looks like, because of what you eat, but
- 20:38Speaker 3: because of how you've decided to care for it today.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Do I hate my body?
- 20:42Speaker 3: Well, let's let's look Let's look at how you are
- 20:45Speaker 3: fueling your body. Let's look at how you're nourishing your body.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Let's look at how how you are allowing it to
- 20:51Speaker 3: recover or not based on the food that we're eating.
- 20:54Speaker 3: And so I remember thinking like Paul, I don't know, man,
- 20:57Speaker 3: I don't know. Like if I asked a guy to
- 21:00Speaker 3: love his wife like he loves his body, like I don't,
- 21:03Speaker 3: I wouldn't tell a guy to do that based on
- 21:05Speaker 3: his food journal and exercise program, like, no, please love
- 21:08Speaker 3: her way better than you generally are loving your body.
- 21:11Speaker 3: So I remember thinking this, like, no, there's there's a
- 21:13Speaker 3: separate there's a disconnect between what Paul's saying, and how
- 21:17Speaker 3: we understand body and and that that some of the
- 21:21Speaker 3: roots of love, learning to love others as God loves us,
- 21:27Speaker 3: learning to love others as we are called to love ourselves.
- 21:32Speaker 3: That that there's there's a deep disconnect there. And I
- 21:35Speaker 3: would love one of the things that you're passionate about
- 21:38Speaker 3: is is helping helping Christians understand what it means to
- 21:44Speaker 3: love themselves, not in the way the world does, but
- 21:47Speaker 3: to love themselves full mind, body, spirit, the whole whole package.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Uh.
- 21:52Speaker 3: And and how that that impacts and influences development and
- 21:57Speaker 3: and also the the following of Christ. So, so could
- 22:00Speaker 3: you talk a bit about what it looks like to
- 22:03Speaker 3: love ourselves, how is that different from the way the
- 22:05Speaker 3: world means it, and why is the body a part
- 22:09Speaker 3: of that at all?
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, that's so good. Oh And I need to
- 22:16Speaker 4: I need to correct myself because I said the word
- 22:18Speaker 4: for muchness was an adjective. It's an adverb. For those
- 22:22Speaker 4: who are grammar files, I don't want to get scolded by.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Them the comments on YouTube, it's an adverb.
- 22:29Speaker 4: You're an adverb. Yeah. Yeah, So my journey into really
- 22:37Speaker 4: understanding the intersection between faith and fitness started back in
- 22:41Speaker 4: twenty seventeen when my doctor at my yearly physical who
- 22:49Speaker 4: is one of my parishioners and I love, gave me
- 22:52Speaker 4: the eyeball to eyeball and said, if you don't make
- 22:54Speaker 4: some changes, you are going to have a stroke before
- 22:58Speaker 4: you're forty.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:00Speaker 4: And and that woke me up. And I can remember
- 23:05Speaker 4: going from that that time with my doctor to the
- 23:08Speaker 4: parking lot down the street from my home, outside of
- 23:12Speaker 4: the grocery store and just crying my eyes out and
- 23:18Speaker 4: saying to the Lord, you know, I've done everything I
- 23:22Speaker 4: know to do and I can't get anything to stick
- 23:25Speaker 4: to help me lose weight. I was eighty pounds heavier
- 23:30Speaker 4: than than I am today.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 23:31Speaker 4: And that's you know, twenty seventeen isn't that far away.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And that really got me on a process of asking
- 23:42Speaker 4: for help first off, and agree of one percent. At
- 23:49Speaker 4: that time in my life, I would tell you that
- 23:51Speaker 4: I had so much shame around my body and how
- 23:55Speaker 4: I felt I looked, and the messages we receive from
- 24:00Speaker 4: culture every day about how a man is supposed to
- 24:03Speaker 4: look right, it's just so destructive and it's a tool
- 24:07Speaker 4: of the enemy. Jesus, Jesus rises again after death in
- 24:16Speaker 4: a full physical body. And it wasn't a different body,
- 24:21Speaker 4: it was his body. It was the same body, but
- 24:23Speaker 4: with scars. Right, that's a we'll get back. And it
- 24:31Speaker 4: was at that point in my life when my wife,
- 24:36Speaker 4: who has always been very athletic, she was really big
- 24:40Speaker 4: into running. Then she had run into this podcast called
- 24:43Speaker 4: Reving the Word by an organization called and what they
- 24:48Speaker 4: do is teach people to love God and love their bodies,
- 24:52Speaker 4: and they train fitness teachers and health coaches to go
- 24:57Speaker 4: out into the world and spread the gospel you using
- 25:00Speaker 4: the tools of our bodies. Because we can't do anything
- 25:04Speaker 4: without these good bodies, right, we cannot. I cannot show
- 25:08Speaker 4: anyone love without my physical body. I can't give somebody
- 25:14Speaker 4: a hug, I can't I can't smile at someone without
- 25:20Speaker 4: making this body part of the process. And really, these
- 25:23Speaker 4: bodies are taking what's invisible and making it visible to them.
- 25:29Speaker 4: And at that time in my life, I couldn't have
- 25:32Speaker 4: told you that. I wouldn't have known. Why do I
- 25:35Speaker 4: have so many problems with this body? And revelation wellness
- 25:40Speaker 4: That podcast, in particular, while I was starting walking, like
- 25:44Speaker 4: let's start walking, let's move up my body in some way,
- 25:48Speaker 4: form or fashion, because at that point I was very inactive.
- 25:53Speaker 4: And I'll say for especially helping people, people who are
- 25:57Speaker 4: in the helping profession and people in Minty in particular,
- 26:01Speaker 4: we have a really hard time taking the time for ourselves.
- 26:08Speaker 4: We're really good at burning the candle at both ends
- 26:11Speaker 4: for the entire world, because there's a lot of messages
- 26:15Speaker 4: that tell us that's what we're supposed to do. And
- 26:19Speaker 4: if it's at the sake of your own physical health,
- 26:21Speaker 4: that's okay. It's a sacrifice for Jesus, and I don't
- 26:26Speaker 4: think that's Jesus model. But I started walking, and I
- 26:34Speaker 4: started listening to this podcast that includes God's Word, reading
- 26:39Speaker 4: scripture over you, coaching you in posture and in how
- 26:45Speaker 4: to engage your core while you're walking or running, getting
- 26:49Speaker 4: your body involved, and having God's spoken over you in
- 26:54Speaker 4: a powerful way. And now I'm listening to something while
- 26:57Speaker 4: I'm moving my body. I'm having God's word spoken on
- 27:00Speaker 4: for me. It's all becoming integrated. And that started to
- 27:04Speaker 4: shift things for me. That that led me into something
- 27:07Speaker 4: that we're also really not good out here in the
- 27:09Speaker 4: United States in particular, is silence and solitude and how
- 27:14Speaker 4: important getting to the quiet place is and letting really,
- 27:21Speaker 4: I think this is where what the key is to
- 27:23Speaker 4: all of this is letting God love me, letting him
- 27:29Speaker 4: love me. Amen, we're so really good at doing things
- 27:33Speaker 4: for him. We're not doing things with him. We're not.
- 27:39Speaker 4: We're not We're not like our savior Jesus getting away
- 27:44Speaker 4: to quiet places to simply be with the Father, to
- 27:50Speaker 4: simply sit with him and listen and let him love us.
- 27:57Speaker 4: And because it's terrifying, we're I'm so used to busy, busy, busy,
- 28:02Speaker 4: and we've been discipled so much by technology these days,
- 28:07Speaker 4: we're so in. We've always got distraction and even I
- 28:12Speaker 4: can I can pick up my Bible and I can
- 28:14Speaker 4: read my Bible, and I can study my Bible, and
- 28:18Speaker 4: that's wonderful. That's very cerebral. I'm not letting him love me.
- 28:27Speaker 4: It's sort of like Facebook stalking, right, a celebrity like
- 28:32Speaker 4: you could say, I'm really good friends for me with
- 28:34Speaker 4: Peyton Manning because I know so many things about him.
- 28:38Speaker 4: I know where his kids get their haircuts, I know
- 28:40Speaker 4: where they go to school. I know where he lives,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I know what car he drives, right, I know all
- 28:44Speaker 4: this stuff about him, but there's zero relationship with him.
- 28:49Speaker 4: If we're not careful as followers of Jesus, we can
- 28:53Speaker 4: know so much about God we don't know him personally.
- 28:59Speaker 2: That's deeply and very well said.
- 29:01Speaker 3: And for in my journey, my individual movements, hiking up
- 29:08Speaker 3: a mountain, lifting weights, the actual movement component of exercise
- 29:17Speaker 3: has been a very deep part of spending time with God.
- 29:20Speaker 2: For me, some of my deepest, most heartfelt prayers.
- 29:25Speaker 3: The times that scripture comes alive for me is on
- 29:29Speaker 3: a hike through the woods by myself, well not by myself,
- 29:33Speaker 3: I'm hanging out with my father, but that I don't
- 29:38Speaker 3: get that sitting in my living room at the start
- 29:42Speaker 3: of a work day. And don't get me wrong, the
- 29:44Speaker 3: discipline of opening the word and reading it and understanding
- 29:50Speaker 3: or at least doing my best too, is something that
- 29:53Speaker 3: informs that process for me, just like you know, hearing
- 29:57Speaker 3: the podcast for what did you call it?
- 30:00Speaker 4: Rev Up the word while you're walking, you're moving, and
- 30:05Speaker 4: somebody else is speaking, you know, scripture over you.
- 30:08Speaker 3: But for my part, and again the reason I wrote
- 30:12Speaker 3: the devotional was because it's like no God's word meets
- 30:16Speaker 3: you in movement. It does, and it's so weird. It's
- 30:20Speaker 3: a hard thing to articulate. I got to say, writing
- 30:22Speaker 3: this devotional has been the hardest thing I've ever done
- 30:24Speaker 3: in my life, because because I can feel it, I
- 30:27Speaker 3: can understand it. But it's really hard to explain to
- 30:31Speaker 3: you what it means to say, because we are surrounded
- 30:35Speaker 3: by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw
- 30:38Speaker 3: all the sin that weighs us down and run with
- 30:41Speaker 3: endurance the race that God has set before us at
- 30:45Speaker 3: pursuing Jesus, the author and finish of our faith.
- 30:49Speaker 2: That's that is in Hebrews. Right.
- 30:51Speaker 3: It's it's hard. It's hard to articulate what that feels like.
- 30:55Speaker 2: While I'm running. Like I'm running, that.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Verse that scripture comes to mind and heart, and I'm
- 31:02Speaker 3: reminded of the difficult race I'm running in my life.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I'm reminded of the times I want to give up.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I'm reminded of all the people who love me and
- 31:09Speaker 3: want to see want to see God's good work done
- 31:12Speaker 3: in my life. And I'm also reminded of the stupid
- 31:15Speaker 3: things I've done that are regularly in opposition to that
- 31:18Speaker 3: thing that weigh me down. Right, And I'm running, and
- 31:22Speaker 3: then then I'm crying. I'm like cry running, you know,
- 31:26Speaker 3: poor people in Greenbrier are driving by me, Like, what's
- 31:28Speaker 3: going on with Alex.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Don't worry about it. It's time with my father. We'll
- 31:32Speaker 2: be all right.
- 31:33Speaker 3: But that is, that is a hard thing to articulate,
- 31:36Speaker 3: that there is something to be said about when scripture
- 31:41Speaker 3: and the movement of our body and the love of
- 31:44Speaker 3: God all hit us all at.
- 31:45Speaker 2: The same time. That's healing.
- 31:48Speaker 3: That's good, that's motivating and inspiring. That honestly is just
- 31:52Speaker 3: good because it is. And if you know, for my part,
- 31:57Speaker 3: I work with a lot of people who don't like
- 31:59Speaker 3: to exercise. Yeah, when this starts happening, you start to
- 32:03Speaker 3: really like exercise. You start to notice that you're not
- 32:06Speaker 3: the same person without it, that there's a process and
- 32:12Speaker 3: progress to that whole thing. I wonder if I said
- 32:16Speaker 3: a lot of things there, if you have something to add,
- 32:18Speaker 3: I'd love to hear that. And then I have a
- 32:19Speaker 3: question for you.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, there's something. I mean, we can see in all
- 32:25Speaker 4: of the data that something happens when we move our
- 32:28Speaker 4: bodies that engages our mind, our will and emotions. Right,
- 32:31Speaker 4: it's everything is interconnected again. We are we are interconnected beings,
- 32:38Speaker 4: and we try to dissociate those things from one another,
- 32:41Speaker 4: and that's a wrong and be unhelpful. And see it's
- 32:47Speaker 4: to make it. To get us back to where we're
- 32:50Speaker 4: supposed to be requires movement, and even in trauma therapy
- 32:56Speaker 4: and care, one of the biggest ways that healing starts
- 33:02Speaker 4: to happen is when people move. And you see it
- 33:05Speaker 4: in fitness. I don't know why I'm crying. I'm you know,
- 33:10Speaker 4: I'm punching a punching bag, or I'm lifting weights, or
- 33:13Speaker 4: I'm pounding drumsticks on the floor and I'm crying. I'm
- 33:17Speaker 4: having an emotional reaction that I don't know why is
- 33:20Speaker 4: this happening? Well, there's your good body is holding bad news, right.
- 33:27Speaker 4: It's the things that have been done to us, the
- 33:29Speaker 4: things we've done to ourselves. Right, it all hangs out
- 33:32Speaker 4: in my body. I carry it with me everywhere I go.
- 33:37Speaker 4: And when I start to move, and now we're talking
- 33:40Speaker 4: about the science of movement, right, which all truth is
- 33:45Speaker 4: God's truth, we start moving that stuff out of us.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Like when I experience stress, high stress during an intense experience,
- 33:59Speaker 4: whether that's a car accident or verbal abuse that I
- 34:03Speaker 4: received at the hands of somebody, or physical abuse I
- 34:05Speaker 4: received at the hands of somebody. My body's producing all
- 34:08Speaker 4: kinds of chemicals, some of which are damaging if they
- 34:13Speaker 4: just hang out in my body, right like cortisol. If
- 34:16Speaker 4: it stays there for too long, it starts creating chronic
- 34:20Speaker 4: inflammation in the whole system. Because that stuff was meant
- 34:25Speaker 4: to move me. It was meant to get me to
- 34:28Speaker 4: do something. It's a gift from God. But when I
- 34:33Speaker 4: don't move, it gets stuck. And the messages I receive
- 34:37Speaker 4: about who I am and who the world says I am,
- 34:40Speaker 4: they get stuck in my body. The messages of shame
- 34:44Speaker 4: and isolation and helplessness, all of those things, they get
- 34:48Speaker 4: stuck in my body, and it's not telling me the truth.
- 34:53Speaker 4: And really, for me, that's where my weight gain and
- 34:56Speaker 4: my physical lack of physical fitness that was. It was
- 35:01Speaker 4: all coming from messages I had received that I didn't
- 35:04Speaker 4: even know I had been receiving. And so in some
- 35:08Speaker 4: ways I could tell you at that even at that time,
- 35:10Speaker 4: I believe God loves me. I believe it. I could
- 35:15Speaker 4: give cognitive assent to that. And yet there were parts
- 35:21Speaker 4: of me that had never experienced that love and to
- 35:28Speaker 4: experience that love required me to do something, whether that
- 35:34Speaker 4: was was hiking, because I, like you, man, do I
- 35:37Speaker 4: encounter Jesus in creation like hiking the Grand Canyon or
- 35:41Speaker 4: some of the mountains here in Denver. Man, just getting
- 35:45Speaker 4: out into sunshine and hearing the birds and smelling the
- 35:49Speaker 4: trees and the dirt. I'm meeting with God in creation
- 35:54Speaker 4: while I move my body and learning to meet him
- 35:57Speaker 4: in silence and solitude. That's that rest and recovery that
- 36:00Speaker 4: comes right because we need that spiritually as well as
- 36:03Speaker 4: physically and all things silence and solitude does for our
- 36:07Speaker 4: brain too. Allows me to actually experience in my body
- 36:15Speaker 4: the love that my Creator has for me.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I think that answered the question.
- 36:20Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, no, that's that's that's awesome.
- 36:22Speaker 3: And I think of you know, I work with with
- 36:26Speaker 3: a lot of individuals, both from a ministerial perspective but
- 36:28Speaker 3: also from an exercise and nutrition perspective, and I'll hear
- 36:31Speaker 3: sometimes I know God's there, but I don't feel him
- 36:36Speaker 3: something like that. And you know that that might sound
- 36:39Speaker 3: kind of frue fruit of some individuals, but but for
- 36:41Speaker 3: but for somebody who's really seeking after God and needs
- 36:45Speaker 3: needs to hear him, needs to see him, needs needs
- 36:48Speaker 3: the Kingdom to break through in a powerful way in
- 36:51Speaker 3: their life, and even non narcissistically, just just as a
- 36:55Speaker 3: as an experience that that oftentimes I with this individual,
- 37:01Speaker 3: I'll be like, all right, I'll meet you here, we're
- 37:02Speaker 3: gonna be fasted, let's go. And in every single time,
- 37:06Speaker 3: every single time we get out in nature, every single
- 37:09Speaker 3: time we have the opportunity to experience His creation, then
- 37:13Speaker 3: the person experiences God, even if they don't have a
- 37:17Speaker 3: particularly tight connection to that, right And and that's for me,
- 37:21Speaker 3: that's always profoundly important that that you know, we we
- 37:26Speaker 3: didn't exist.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I'm in a garage gym right now.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Abraham would not have understood any any of our
- 37:35Speaker 3: experiences here, air conditioning, running water, you know, you know
- 37:39Speaker 3: that's but but Abraham had a tight connection with God.
- 37:44Speaker 3: He knew who God was, he knew what God wanted
- 37:46Speaker 3: from him.
- 37:47Speaker 2: He walked that path.
- 37:49Speaker 3: He made some of his own mistakes, right, but he
- 37:51Speaker 3: walked with him. And I think that's an interesting thing too,
- 37:53Speaker 3: is that the scriptural account of a connection with God
- 37:56Speaker 3: is usually depicted as a walk.
- 37:58Speaker 2: I'm walking with God. Uh, Enoch walked with God. And
- 38:01Speaker 2: was no more.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Christ describes the pathway to life as the narrow way, right.
- 38:08Speaker 3: The idea that there's this trail, this path, that that
- 38:12Speaker 3: you get to move.
- 38:13Speaker 2: On is powerful and throughout scripture.
- 38:17Speaker 3: But I did want to address a word because I've
- 38:19Speaker 3: said it a couple of times. You've said it a
- 38:20Speaker 3: couple of times. But I want to address this word,
- 38:22Speaker 3: and I want to address it by by explaining a concept.
- 38:25Speaker 3: And that is when when I work in the health
- 38:28Speaker 3: and fitness world, I see two ends of a spectrum
- 38:32Speaker 3: in in fitness from a worldly perspective, I see the
- 38:35Speaker 3: lack of it, right, the deconditioned, nutritionally deprived, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 3: driven by a bunch of different things. I see that
- 38:45Speaker 3: end of the spectrum of fitness. And then I see
- 38:47Speaker 3: the end of the spectrum of fitness where it's look
- 38:50Speaker 3: how look how great I look? And look how much
- 38:52Speaker 3: weight I can move? And and look how look how
- 38:55Speaker 3: athletic I am? Right, and and biblically speaking, the seven
- 39:00Speaker 3: deadly sins are not really a thing, but but people
- 39:03Speaker 3: on that right, And I think of the two ends
- 39:06Speaker 3: of the spectrum of fitness as as on one end
- 39:09Speaker 3: we've got we've got gluttony and sloth. Right, Oh, gluttony,
- 39:12Speaker 3: that's scary word. Yeah, yeah, we still do that in
- 39:14Speaker 3: church some reason. We get for the alcoholics a hard time.
- 39:18Speaker 3: But the guy is eating the seventh donut. You know,
- 39:20Speaker 3: we're gonna let him pass as long as there's coffee
- 39:22Speaker 3: with it.
- 39:24Speaker 2: I'm kidding, but.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I know there's that end of the spectrum, right, gluttony
- 39:27Speaker 3: and sloth Like food in my life has become its
- 39:31Speaker 3: own idol. Or I've become acquainted and comfortable within action,
- 39:37Speaker 3: and so I'm not going to challenge myself.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I don't like that feeling. I don't want to do that.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Right, there's there's one in one end of the spectrum
- 39:43Speaker 3: of fitness there and then on the other end of
- 39:45Speaker 3: the spectrum of fitness, it's it's the uh, the pride
- 39:49Speaker 3: and envy, right, and and pride being like, look how
- 39:52Speaker 3: great I am, Look at my six pack ads, look
- 39:55Speaker 3: at my split biceps, Look how heavy away I can move?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Or or I want to be just like I don't
- 40:03Speaker 3: know the rock is that an old actor?
- 40:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 40:06Speaker 3: I have a hard time referencing Hollywood here because I
- 40:10Speaker 3: don't know how young or old people are.
- 40:13Speaker 2: I want to be like ex celebrity.
- 40:15Speaker 3: And I'm pursuing that, look, you know, because because that
- 40:18Speaker 3: will feel good to me somewhere in the middle, and
- 40:22Speaker 3: and that's how that's how the Christian walk is somewhere
- 40:26Speaker 3: in the middle. Stewardship. And I've said that word. You've
- 40:30Speaker 3: said that word. What I mean by stewardship is this
- 40:34Speaker 3: body I have. I have some control over, not a lot,
- 40:39Speaker 3: but some, you know, And and I have some decisions
- 40:42Speaker 3: to make with it on a daily basis. I've been
- 40:44Speaker 3: given it for a reason, but ultimately it's God. God
- 40:47Speaker 3: gave it to me, and I have a certain amount
- 40:49Speaker 3: of time with it here on earth. And what happens
- 40:52Speaker 3: after that, I'm not sure we can say something scripturally speaking,
- 40:56Speaker 3: but but I have this thing. Just like Jesus said
- 41:00Speaker 3: about the men who are given talents by their Master,
- 41:05Speaker 3: He's given them talents for a period of time. And
- 41:08Speaker 3: the question is what did you do with those things?
- 41:10Speaker 2: What?
- 41:11Speaker 3: What did you How did you steward those things? And
- 41:15Speaker 3: so and so in the middle of this sin spectrum
- 41:18Speaker 3: of fitness, there's stewardship. And we've talked a bit about
- 41:22Speaker 3: what the core beliefs in that are. My everything's integrated.
- 41:26Speaker 3: I'm all one. God loves me. He made me this
- 41:29Speaker 3: way for a reason. He didn't give me a meat
- 41:30Speaker 3: sack that he hated, you know, like to wrestle with.
- 41:34Speaker 3: But that there is this idea in the middle that
- 41:38Speaker 3: I've been given this body, and I get the opportunity,
- 41:43Speaker 3: I have the responsibility to make the most.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Of this thing.
- 41:47Speaker 3: And so so that's my definition of stewardship, and that's
- 41:51Speaker 3: the definition I operate with when I speak that I
- 41:54Speaker 3: don't own it, I steward it. In your mind, when
- 41:58Speaker 3: it comes to health and fitness, what does stewardship mean
- 42:01Speaker 3: to you? And if you have any comments about the
- 42:04Speaker 3: the spectrum of fitness, we can talk about that too.
- 42:07Speaker 3: But I was I was curious about your thoughts there.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I one hundred percent agree that we we live
- 42:14Speaker 4: in a culture that well of polarizing and endpoints right.
- 42:19Speaker 4: So it's obsession and neglect are the two sort of sides.
- 42:23Speaker 4: It's like it's over, I'm a neglect and and and
- 42:28Speaker 4: Christ always brings us back to the middle right where
- 42:32Speaker 4: He's standing. And I think some of this goes back
- 42:36Speaker 4: to even even that idea of image. What what does
- 42:40Speaker 4: it mean to be created in the image of God.
- 42:43Speaker 4: And in that word that is used salem in Hebrew
- 42:48Speaker 4: for image, it's the same same word that we would
- 42:51Speaker 4: use of an image that an ancient ruler set up
- 42:55Speaker 4: in a distant part of his kingdom, right, that that
- 42:59Speaker 4: image represents him, that represented that ruler. And in some
- 43:06Speaker 4: cases the people who live there wouldn't have even said
- 43:09Speaker 4: it's just a representation. It's a it's a physical expression
- 43:13Speaker 4: in reality of who this person is in their rulership,
- 43:17Speaker 4: in their dominion over this space. It shows that this
- 43:25Speaker 4: ruler reigns here. Yes, and in a very I mean
- 43:31Speaker 4: it's the same word used of us creating the image
- 43:35Speaker 4: of God, the very image of God, Jesus creating the
- 43:39Speaker 4: very image of God. Right, he was the very image
- 43:41Speaker 4: and nature in very nature God. It's that same word.
- 43:45Speaker 4: It's a lem and And there's something that we need
- 43:49Speaker 4: to take away from that we were created to show
- 43:53Speaker 4: all creation who rules and reigns to represent him. I mean,
- 44:00Speaker 4: that's a high calling, very right, and it should a
- 44:05Speaker 4: humble me, right, it should humble me that it's it's
- 44:08Speaker 4: not about me, it's about him. It's about the creator himself.
- 44:14Speaker 4: And it should also give me this unshakable confidence that
- 44:18Speaker 4: I've been made by him and for him to represent him,
- 44:22Speaker 4: like he's given me authority in relationship with him, to
- 44:28Speaker 4: display his character to the world, Like that's so freaking cool.
- 44:34Speaker 4: And that includes this physical body. I think part of
- 44:38Speaker 4: the problem is we assume that the image of God
- 44:41Speaker 4: is only non physical. I don't think that's the case
- 44:47Speaker 4: at all. I think I think there's because what did
- 44:50Speaker 4: Moses see right when God passed by? He saw something?
- 44:57Speaker 4: And now God himself carries a human body in g
- 45:00Speaker 4: Esus Christ right, who is the eternal second person of
- 45:03Speaker 4: the Godhead. So there is something to be said there,
- 45:08Speaker 4: which is why I think Paul would say, whether you
- 45:11Speaker 4: eat or drink, do it to the glory of God.
- 45:15Speaker 4: In all your actions and interactions using this body, you
- 45:21Speaker 4: are showing the world something of who he is, whether
- 45:25Speaker 4: that's accurate or inaccurate. And even that word fit, we
- 45:29Speaker 4: use that word fitness, which can can feel shaming to
- 45:32Speaker 4: some people. I don't feel fit. I don't feel like
- 45:35Speaker 4: because we have this false image in our head, we
- 45:37Speaker 4: have to look like Dwayne Johnson right to be fit,
- 45:40Speaker 4: or Chris Evans with his shirt off when he hasn't
- 45:42Speaker 4: had any water to drink for twenty four hours. Right,
- 45:47Speaker 4: Like that word fit means that you are suitable for
- 45:52Speaker 4: a purpose, suitably made for a purpose, as in this
- 45:58Speaker 4: bucket is fit to carry the water, right or or
- 46:02Speaker 4: this computer is fit to hold a zoom meeting on
- 46:06Speaker 4: m It's not. It's not something that the computer like
- 46:09Speaker 4: thought about and worried about and and was like obsessed about,
- 46:13Speaker 4: Like I got to have these great microchips, right, like
- 46:16Speaker 4: work the processors. Like that's important. It's absolutely important to
- 46:23Speaker 4: to care about my muscles, but not in an obsessive way.
- 46:28Speaker 4: Not to It's not for vanity, it's for ability. It's
- 46:33Speaker 4: for ability. Am I am I a suitable vessel stewarding
- 46:39Speaker 4: the presence of God that lives in me by His
- 46:43Speaker 4: Holy Spirit, who in dwells me as his temple, which
- 46:48Speaker 4: which is a temple, is made for worship, Like I
- 46:52Speaker 4: should be worshiping God with my body, because I think
- 46:57Speaker 4: that's really what stewardship comes down to, is it's about
- 47:00Speaker 4: what I'm worshiping?
- 47:02Speaker 2: Amen?
- 47:03Speaker 4: Am I worshiping God with my body? Am I worshiping
- 47:06Speaker 4: God with my heart? Am I worshiping Him with my spirit?
- 47:09Speaker 4: My mind? Or? Or are there parts of me that
- 47:12Speaker 4: I'm holding back from him are there. And I don't
- 47:16Speaker 4: mean that even necessarily in a wilful, disobedient holding back
- 47:20Speaker 4: from him. But in some ways I hold parts of
- 47:23Speaker 4: me back from him because I'm too scared to let
- 47:25Speaker 4: him in when really what he wants to do, because
- 47:30Speaker 4: really I'm scared of what he might reveal. Right, Shame
- 47:35Speaker 4: is always going to push me to hide, yep, And
- 47:38Speaker 4: whether that's something I've done or something that's been done
- 47:41Speaker 4: to me. And the biggest tool that enemy has is
- 47:47Speaker 4: shame because it causes us to pull away and isolate.
- 47:53Speaker 4: And what my good father wants to do is open
- 47:57Speaker 4: things up, reveal the broken pieces and parts of me
- 48:02Speaker 4: so he can heal them, which again continues to make
- 48:08Speaker 4: me a better vessel for stewarding his goodness and his
- 48:11Speaker 4: glory and his love and sharing it with the world.
- 48:14Speaker 4: And I will say that from from for me like
- 48:17Speaker 4: the biggest the biggest difference in my physical both my
- 48:22Speaker 4: weight and my fitness, has been letting Jesus into those
- 48:28Speaker 4: darker parts of my story that I'm scared or I'm
- 48:32Speaker 4: not even aware of until he brings it up. You
- 48:36Speaker 4: talked about that the ugly cry while you're running. Like
- 48:40Speaker 4: you know, I can remember the first time I experienced that.
- 48:44Speaker 4: It was just after a big group fitness experience and
- 48:48Speaker 4: the person leading the experience led us in some silent
- 48:53Speaker 4: reflection in prayer time, and man, I had an encounter
- 48:56Speaker 4: with the Lord that blew my mind and shook my
- 49:01Speaker 4: world in the most beautiful way, like the ugly cry
- 49:05Speaker 4: that then turned into a deep belly laugh because I
- 49:09Speaker 4: experienced the very presence of my heavenly Father and loving
- 49:14Speaker 4: the hell out of me literally, right, literally, yeah, yeah,
- 49:20Speaker 4: So stewardship Really, it's going back to worship. It's going
- 49:23Speaker 4: back to worship. And where is my value being placed?
- 49:27Speaker 4: Where is my identity being found? Is it being found
- 49:31Speaker 4: in my six pack ads which I don't have? Is
- 49:36Speaker 4: it being found in Is it being found in my hairline? Right?
- 49:39Speaker 4: I mean that is it? Where is it being found?
- 49:42Speaker 4: Is it being found in Christ? Because if it is,
- 49:44Speaker 4: then how I behave, which is my physical body? How
- 49:50Speaker 4: I behave will follow.
- 49:53Speaker 3: I As you were speaking there. One of the things
- 49:56Speaker 3: I I've meditated on and spent time on is is
- 50:01Speaker 3: we call it communion some denomination see it as a
- 50:05Speaker 3: sacrament or an activity or practice, and theologically, I I
- 50:10Speaker 3: don't want to cross any wires or mess anybody's mind
- 50:14Speaker 3: up on this front. But there was something Jesus said
- 50:17Speaker 3: when he was breaking the bread and drinking the wine
- 50:20Speaker 3: with his disciples in the Last Supper. So in the
- 50:23Speaker 3: night he was betrayed. He took the bread and he
- 50:24Speaker 3: broke it, and he said, this is my body. It
- 50:27Speaker 3: would be broken for you. As often as you eat
- 50:30Speaker 3: of it, do so in remembrance of me. And he
- 50:32Speaker 3: did the same thing with the cup. He said, this
- 50:33Speaker 3: is my blood. We pour it out as a ransom
- 50:36Speaker 3: for many, and with it, I'm bringing a new covenant.
- 50:38Speaker 3: As often as you drink of it, do so in
- 50:41Speaker 3: remembrance of me. And as Christians, this is you know,
- 50:44Speaker 3: depending on your denominational bent and stuff, this is something
- 50:46Speaker 3: that you might come together as a congregation and do.
- 50:49Speaker 3: You might do it often, you might do it infrequently.
- 50:51Speaker 3: It might be on special occasions or whatever. But from
- 50:54Speaker 3: a nutritional perspective, there's so much nutrition advice in the world.
- 51:02Speaker 3: And you know, I don't know your whole story. You
- 51:05Speaker 3: haven't sat down and told me over coffee, But I
- 51:07Speaker 3: know that if you're eighty pounds overweight. There is all
- 51:10Speaker 3: kinds of dietary advice that's been thrown at you and
- 51:12Speaker 3: that you probably tried right and either implemented and failed
- 51:17Speaker 3: at miserably, or it worked for a little while and
- 51:19Speaker 3: then it didn't right. But I wanted to speak to
- 51:22Speaker 3: the person listening who is like, Okay, I do want
- 51:25Speaker 3: to glorify God with my body. I'm not exactly sure
- 51:28Speaker 3: where to start. There's a lot of conflicting evidence and
- 51:31Speaker 3: information and stuff out there right that when I start
- 51:35Speaker 3: asking for help, it comes not necessarily in a godly fashion,
- 51:40Speaker 3: but in a worldly fashion.
- 51:41Speaker 2: And so I've tried a lot of things.
- 51:43Speaker 3: I wanted to say out loud that from a nutritional perspective,
- 51:47Speaker 3: there's a lot of information out in the world about
- 51:49Speaker 3: nutrition science. But ultimately what it comes down to is Lord,
- 51:53Speaker 3: teach me how to feed myself well, and the Holy
- 51:57Speaker 3: Spirit can help you learn how to do that.
- 52:00Speaker 2: There's there's definitely some science to the whole thing.
- 52:02Speaker 3: There's definitely well traveled roads that could guide you along
- 52:07Speaker 3: the narrow way of nutrition and our abundant and hyper
- 52:10Speaker 3: palatable world. There's there's all that, right, but there is
- 52:14Speaker 3: this idea, and this is central to my my coaching practice.
- 52:18Speaker 3: As often as I eat, as often as I take
- 52:21Speaker 3: food in, as often as I take drink, And how
- 52:23Speaker 3: do I do that in remembrance of Christ? Like like
- 52:26Speaker 3: Paul said, whether you eat, whether you drink, do it, do.
- 52:29Speaker 2: It to the glory of God.
- 52:31Speaker 3: And I wanted to invite listeners if you haven't already
- 52:35Speaker 3: started this practice, to pray over your food before you eat,
- 52:38Speaker 3: not because of what you know your grandpa told you about.
- 52:40Speaker 2: You'll have a stomach ache if you don't.
- 52:43Speaker 3: But but you have the opportunity to remember Christ, thank
- 52:46Speaker 3: God for the provision He's given you, but also to
- 52:49Speaker 3: make a decision was this right?
- 52:51Speaker 2: Is this what I need to be eating right now?
- 52:54Speaker 2: Is this is this good for me? Is this for
- 52:56Speaker 2: your glory?
- 52:57Speaker 3: Or do I know somewhere deep down that this was
- 52:59Speaker 3: not going to be beneficial and not going to be positive?
- 53:04Speaker 3: And so I say that out loud to say there
- 53:09Speaker 3: are individuals who are listening to this who might have
- 53:12Speaker 3: a hard time knowing where to start. And I know,
- 53:15Speaker 3: like in your world, from a pastor's perspective but also
- 53:19Speaker 3: from a coach's perspective, you help people to start. So
- 53:25Speaker 3: either from your personal experience or from the experience of
- 53:28Speaker 3: working with individuals. I described one way we might start
- 53:32Speaker 3: from a nutritional perspective to bower head and give it
- 53:35Speaker 3: to God and ask, you know, Lord, show me show
- 53:38Speaker 3: me how to remember you well in my food. How
- 53:41Speaker 3: do you help individuals get started? Or what's something that
- 53:44Speaker 3: comes to heart and mind for you, for that listener
- 53:47Speaker 3: who's ready to integrate mind and body and start pursuing
- 53:52Speaker 3: God's will for their body and stewardship.
- 53:55Speaker 2: What's that look like for you?
- 53:58Speaker 4: Yeah, there's so many different routes I could take there.
- 54:03Speaker 4: I mean one one is it starts small, right, because
- 54:10Speaker 4: I love when when the Lord says in in zeph
- 54:15Speaker 4: and Iah, he says, do not despise the day of
- 54:17Speaker 4: small things. Yeah, small beginnings, right, A great a seed
- 54:23Speaker 4: the side of the size of a mustard seed becomes
- 54:25Speaker 4: this big plant. He says that the Kingdom of Heaven
- 54:28Speaker 4: is like a mustard seed, this tiny thing. It's like yeast.
- 54:30Speaker 4: It's this tiny thing that can spread throughout. Start small,
- 54:34Speaker 4: like there is like we all we all think we've
- 54:36Speaker 4: got to become something really fast. But you know, everything
- 54:43Speaker 4: that that becomes sustainable is something that started small and
- 54:47Speaker 4: was built upon right, So go for a walk, a
- 54:52Speaker 4: five minute walk, right, ten minute walk after a meal, Like,
- 54:58Speaker 4: I think what you said is so important to because
- 55:01Speaker 4: we don't stop, we don't take time to process. Okay,
- 55:07Speaker 4: what am I gonna eat? Why am I eating it?
- 55:11Speaker 4: It takes too much effort. And our culture is trying
- 55:14Speaker 4: to get us to move fast all the time. And
- 55:17Speaker 4: that's why we need fast food. Right because we're always
- 55:20Speaker 4: moving so fast, I don't have time. We've got to
- 55:23Speaker 4: create space for slowing down. And that includes praying before
- 55:28Speaker 4: we eat. Or it's I'm gonna go for a ten
- 55:30Speaker 4: minute walk after I eat. I mean so many good
- 55:33Speaker 4: things happen because of a walk in my body chemically, right,
- 55:38Speaker 4: Like we're lowering, lowering a one C right there. Just
- 55:42Speaker 4: go for a walk or or start with I'm going
- 55:46Speaker 4: to keep a water bottle on my table or in
- 55:49Speaker 4: the car or whatever, and I'm gonna when it's empty,
- 55:52Speaker 4: i'm gonna refill it. I'm gonna drink it. Right, start
- 55:54Speaker 4: with water. So many of us are hungry because we're thirsty.
- 55:59Speaker 4: We don't we don't know that hunger is being or
- 56:02Speaker 4: thirst is being masked as hunger. And if I were
- 56:06Speaker 4: to increase my hydration. I actually might find I'm not
- 56:10Speaker 4: as hungry as I thought I was. So starting with
- 56:14Speaker 4: hydration or starting with a small movement, just it doesn't
- 56:18Speaker 4: have to take a lot, right Or what's one thing
- 56:23Speaker 4: I can change in my diet right now, Like instead
- 56:26Speaker 4: of potato chips, I'm gonna have carrots. Just change that
- 56:32Speaker 4: one thing and see how you feel, right, pay attention
- 56:35Speaker 4: to how you feel again, it's the small things are
- 56:40Speaker 4: the things that lead to great change.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Very well said.
- 56:44Speaker 3: And I also like to point listeners toward There's a
- 56:48Speaker 3: link in the show notes to Revelation Wellness as YouTube
- 56:51Speaker 3: channel and Revelation Wellness as resources online because that's where
- 56:56Speaker 3: you started, right, That's the place where where you heard
- 57:00Speaker 3: a podcast and words were spoken over you. And there's
- 57:04Speaker 3: there's opportunities within there to be connected in community.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Here's the thing about being a Christian.
- 57:10Speaker 3: You think, because because solitude is good and studying scripture
- 57:14Speaker 3: is good, you think.
- 57:15Speaker 2: This is this is between you and God, and it is.
- 57:18Speaker 3: But God also teaches us through his word not to
- 57:22Speaker 3: forsake gathering together as some are in the habit of
- 57:26Speaker 3: doing that, that that we we come together and are connected.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Think a zebra. Zebras are not camouflaged against the grass lands.
- 57:36Speaker 3: They stick out like a sore thumb. Right, they're white
- 57:38Speaker 3: and black, they're white. Are they white with black stripes
- 57:40Speaker 3: or black with white that's a that's a that's a
- 57:42Speaker 3: fun question for God when we get to heaven. But anyway, so,
- 57:45Speaker 3: so zebras are not camouflaged to the grasslands to protect
- 57:49Speaker 3: them from lions. And the scripture tells us that that
- 57:52Speaker 3: the enemy roams about like a hungry lion, seeking whom
- 57:55Speaker 3: he might devour. Do you know who is zebra is
- 57:56Speaker 3: camouflaged against others zebras. When you've got a bunch of
- 58:00Speaker 3: black and white striped zebras running together, they.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Don't get eaten so easily.
- 58:05Speaker 3: Right, And in the same way, if you're just starting
- 58:08Speaker 3: on this health and fitness journey, getting connected in community,
- 58:11Speaker 3: even if it's virtual, even if it's a virtual community,
- 58:14Speaker 3: being connected with a friend who's going to walk with you,
- 58:17Speaker 3: with somebody who's also making some changes to the nutrition,
- 58:20Speaker 3: with a community of people who are speaking scripture over
- 58:24Speaker 3: you while you're exercising on YouTube, you know, like in
- 58:27Speaker 3: your living room. Being connected in that way, you don't
- 58:31Speaker 3: have to do this thing alone. You can try, but
- 58:34Speaker 3: it'd be a lot better if you didn't. So I
- 58:38Speaker 3: would love for you to have the opportunity to speak
- 58:40Speaker 3: into that, and then I would also like to pray
- 58:42Speaker 3: over you and your ministry.
- 58:43Speaker 4: Wess, thank you. Yeah, yeah, I would. I would say
- 58:48Speaker 4: that the word that Paul uses again, it's we live
- 58:54Speaker 4: in such an individualistic culture that we see everything every
- 58:57Speaker 4: you in scripture as me, oh you're talking to me.
- 59:02Speaker 4: But the word that Paul uses when he says you
- 59:05Speaker 4: is really all y'all, all y'all in all y'all.
- 59:12Speaker 2: Like you're from Indiana. Man, I didn't know you heard
- 59:14Speaker 2: the all y'alls, right.
- 59:17Speaker 4: It's like, so when he says you, do you not
- 59:20Speaker 4: know that you are the temple of the Holy spirits?
- 59:23Speaker 4: Do you not know that all y'all together are the
- 59:27Speaker 4: temple of the Holy Spirit? Individual and it's collective and
- 59:31Speaker 4: we need one another. We were made for each other.
- 59:35Speaker 4: And and that's another tool of the enemy to isolate us, right,
- 59:38Speaker 4: because he knows that he can isolate us. Man, we're
- 59:42Speaker 4: just in such danger. We're in such danger as isolated
- 59:46Speaker 4: individuals like that zebra all by itself. Yeah, And in Revelation,
- 59:52Speaker 4: wellness is a community where you are invited, as you
- 59:55Speaker 4: are to come and learn right, to come and be
- 59:59Speaker 4: together as we learn how to love God and love
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: our bodies and using these bodies as the primary tool
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: by which God calls us to spread the gospel to
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: love people well. And we do that by people encountering
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: the transformational love of Jesus through deep spiritual healing and
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: physical health practices. That's how we do it. And we've
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: got a ton of free resources on the website for you,
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: and you are invited to come. We also do a
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: training every year teaching health coaches. So we train health
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: coaches and we train fitness teachers. We call them fitness
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: teacher gospel preachers, and that's another avenue of we do
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: deep discipleship on these very conversations that Alex and I
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: are having, and it's been transformational for me for sure.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: So yeah, you're invited.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Awesome, awesome, Thank you for that, brother, And close down
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: every one of my interviews here by praying over the
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: individual I'm interviewing and their ministry. So if you would
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: bow your head with me so I can pray over you,
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: Father God, thank you so much for this day. Thank
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: you for the time I get to spend with my
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: brother Wes, and thank you for the good work that
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: you've done in his life and continue to do through
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: his church and through his family. Lord, I pray a
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: special blessing over him and his body and his mind,
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: all of the parts integrated together, that he will steward
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: them well for your kingdom, and that every person that
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: he touches is blessed to do the same. I also
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: pray Lord for the listeners in this podcast. God, I
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: pray that if one person is listening here who has
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: separated their mind and their body and they don't understand
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: your love or feel your love, Lord, I pray that
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: you will reveal yourself to them in a way that
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: they can understand and in a way that changes them forever. God,
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: let us not be individuals who do this thing alone,
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: or who are prone to self worship or self neglect.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Teach us to follow You mind, body, and spirit and
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: Jesus name.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: Amen, Wes, thank you so much for your time and energy,
