- 0:12Hello friends and a hip hip Hooray.
- 0:15Not only is it Friday, but it is the first day of spring here in
- 0:21the Tasmanian Chilliness and goodbye winter.
- 0:26Hello spring. It is a good day.
- 0:29Hello to you. And what makes it even better in
- 0:31the Conry household is all three of our boys have a student free
- 0:34day, so they get to chill at home while mom and dad still go
- 0:38to work. That's a bit rough, but that's
- 0:41how it is. That's okay.
- 0:43Life is good and it is a day to read a Psalm together.
- 0:47And you know what makes today even just the best?
- 0:51I sat down, Bible in the hand, ready to read Psalm 80.
- 0:54And Sean, can you please come and help?
- 0:56One of the kitchen drawers is jammed and I stuck my arm in and
- 1:01I pulled out the offending box and what did we find but a
- 1:04little bag of fudge. So I am enjoying fudge and
- 1:09disarm. Ain't my life just the grandest
- 1:12thing I can certainly recommend. Fudge it.
- 1:14It's not often, but Oh my goodness, that is delicious.
- 1:18Enough about me. Let us get down to business.
- 1:21We are here to read a Psalm together, and this is a Psalm of
- 1:24lament, A Psalm for the choir director, a Psalm of Asaf to be
- 1:29sung to the tune of Lilies of the Covenants.
- 1:33Yes, that old classic from 979 BC.
- 1:39You remember Top of the Pops back then.
- 1:41It was a good year, lots of great anthemic hits.
- 1:45But I'm going to let you do the musical interpretation of Lilies
- 1:48of the Covenant and I'm just going to read the lyrics as we
- 1:52read together. Psalm 80.
- 2:05Please listen. O Shepherd of Israel, you who
- 2:09led Joseph's descendants like a flock, oh God enthroned above
- 2:14the cherubim, display your radiant glory to Efraim,
- 2:18Benjamin and Manassa. Show us your mighty power.
- 2:23Come rescue us. Turn us again to yourself, O
- 2:27God, make your face shine down upon us.
- 2:32Only then will we be saved. Oh Lord God of Heaven's armies,
- 2:37how long will you be angry with our prayers?
- 2:41Have you fed us with sorrow and made us drink tears by the
- 2:45bucketful? You have made us the scorn of
- 2:49neighboring nations. Our enemies treat us as a joke.
- 2:54Turn us again to yourself. Oh God of Heaven's armies, make
- 2:58your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved.
- 3:04You brought us from Egypt like a Grapevine.
- 3:08You drove away the Pagan nations and transplanted us into your
- 3:12land. You cleared the ground for us
- 3:15and we took root and filled the land.
- 3:18Our shade covered the mountains. Our branches covered the mighty
- 3:23Cedars. We spread our branches West to
- 3:26the Mediterranean Sea. Our shoots spread east to the
- 3:30Euphrates River. But now, why have you broken
- 3:34down our walls? So that all who passed by may
- 3:37steal our fruit. The wild boar from the forest
- 3:41devours it, and the wild animals feed on it.
- 3:45Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven's armies, look down from
- 3:51heaven and see our plight. Take care of this Grapevine that
- 3:55you yourself have planted, this sun you have raised for
- 3:59yourself. For we are chopped up and burned
- 4:03by our enemies. May they perish at the sight of
- 4:07your frown. Strengthen the man you love, the
- 4:10son of your choice. Then we will never abandon you
- 4:14again. Revive us so we can call on your
- 4:18name once more. Turn us again to yourself.
- 4:23Oh, Lord, God of Heaven's armies, make your face shine
- 4:27down upon us. Only then will we be saved.
- 4:43Lord, what a beautiful refrain. The psalmist uses that in the
- 4:47depths of despair when everything is going wrong.
- 4:51The refrain is that you would turn them back to yourself.
- 4:56Not that you would turn to them, but you would turn them back to
- 5:00you. May that be the refrain of our
- 5:03heart when things go wrong that we would shout out, Lord, turn
- 5:09us back to you. Because it's only when we come
- 5:12to you, when we face you, when we step into your embrace, that
- 5:20we are saved, You are always there with your arms wide open
- 5:26in the deepest valley and on the top of the most glorious
- 5:29mountaintop experience. You are there with your arms
- 5:33wide open. Call us to step into your
- 5:37embrace for your protection and your love and your sustenance
- 5:43and your eternal promised whispered in our ears.
- 5:47We love you and we are so grateful for all that you have
- 5:51done for us. We pray this in the name of
- 5:54Jesus. Amen.
