David Brunning: so i was always i think i David Brunning: got captivated back back David Brunning: in the day in the early David Brunning: early years i got David Brunning: captivated by hip -hop David Brunning: culture there's something David Brunning: about hip -hop culture David Brunning: that captivated me and David Brunning: this is in the 80s David Brunning: and um in the 90s and uh David Brunning: and there was all like David Brunning: graffiti and tagging and David Brunning: just and then David Brunning: branding so i was into David Brunning: skateboarding i was into David Brunning: hip -hop i was into all David Brunning: that and what really David Brunning: grabbed a hold of me was David Brunning: like logos and design and David Brunning: branding and like the way David Brunning: the way words could David Brunning: be like fonts and things David Brunning: could be used and and David Brunning: color and all that stuff David Brunning: so all the old skate David Brunning: companies i was really David Brunning: into and then the burst David Brunning: that big burst in the 90s David Brunning: like right in the David Brunning: beginning of the 90s you David Brunning: saw a huge shift uh from David Brunning: from the like graffiti hip David Brunning: -hop culture that sort of David Brunning: thing skateboarding David Brunning: everything started to to David Brunning: just mold the new york new David Brunning: york was always my David Brunning: favorite place my i wasn't David Brunning: there in the 90s but um David Brunning: but it's music and it's David Brunning: lifestyle it's the skate David Brunning: scene the the hip -hop David Brunning: scene uh you know David Brunning: everything it's a birth David Brunning: it's the birthing grounds David Brunning: of hip hop and what came David Brunning: out of that just it David Brunning: somehow grabbed my David Brunning: attention and here i am David Brunning: like on the west side of David Brunning: canada right but i'm like David Brunning: just attracted to new york David Brunning: i just yeah i don't know David Brunning: it David Brunning: was weird so the i would David Brunning: write on everything i David Brunning: would want to draw my David Brunning: older brother was the David Brunning: artist if you looked at it David Brunning: from a you know David Brunning: conventional manner he David Brunning: could draw and sketch and David Brunning: and i mean he David Brunning: would just mold things out David Brunning: of nothing he could you David Brunning: know uh create something David Brunning: to David Brunning: out of nothing he David Brunning: He could draw at a very David Brunning: young age, like full David Brunning: bodied people and the David Brunning: structure, the, the, the David Brunning: lighting, the shadows, David Brunning: the, the way the movement, David Brunning: he's so talented. David Brunning: And, and I wasn't, I was David Brunning: always in awe of it, but I David Brunning: wasn't like, I want to do David Brunning: that. David Brunning: thing but you know it was David Brunning: uh run dmc i got to David Brunning: meet reverend run like all David Brunning: that like it's like i've David Brunning: met a lot of artists a lot David Brunning: of these hip -hop artists David Brunning: it's crazy looking back at David Brunning: at all that uh but yeah David Brunning: it's just something David Brunning: something about the music David Brunning: and and the pulse the David Brunning: experience that's what David Brunning: grabbed me Kevin Halliday: so so here you are you you Kevin Halliday: go back in the day and Kevin Halliday: then then you're doing Kevin Halliday: graffiti art okay walls Kevin Halliday: painting the artistry that Kevin Halliday: you became and who have Kevin Halliday: you become today or where Kevin Halliday: you were so look Kevin Halliday: back in the past here you Kevin Halliday: are as an artist you Kevin Halliday: weren't singing you Kevin Halliday: weren't with out there Kevin Halliday: rapping but your creative Kevin Halliday: ability became with the Kevin Halliday: art like how were people Kevin Halliday: purchasing or looking at Kevin Halliday: your art for like how did Kevin Halliday: you value it like here you Kevin Halliday: are you're tagging stuff Kevin Halliday: and then all of a sudden Kevin Halliday: what was your first sale David Brunning: so you know that's wild so David Brunning: so when i was rapping like David Brunning: i would break dance and David Brunning: all this stuff like you David Brunning: would get into the David Brunning: elements of hip -hop and David Brunning: so i'd dance a bit and do David Brunning: my thing and i i would i David Brunning: was rapping and i you know David Brunning: there's a David Brunning: there's a few that we had David Brunning: you get David Brunning: our crew um a bunch of us David Brunning: , David Brunning: in that crew and dj and David Brunning: there's three mcs one David Brunning: of them became uh David Brunning: dragonfly empire uh tk and David Brunning: that's a friend of mine David Brunning: who actually went further David Brunning: with it than the rest of David Brunning: us did my father asked me David Brunning: he's like what are you David Brunning: doing he's like you're a David Brunning: white boy rapping and it's David Brunning: like yeah i get that you David Brunning: know what i mean but i David Brunning: really enjoyed David Brunning: that entire art form and David Brunning: to this day like i still David Brunning: like rhyme rhyme skills David Brunning: are it but he said David Brunning: something to me he's like David Brunning: you're out painting trains David Brunning: you're out doing this and David Brunning: doing that David Brunning: why don't you make David Brunning: something of it so i was David Brunning: like all right so back in David Brunning: the day when things David Brunning: weren't really as David Brunning: in the movie received all David Brunning: developed as they are now David Brunning: these hits in terms of David Brunning: way before the social David Brunning: like what's in there it David Brunning: was like they would do David Brunning: platforms became anything David Brunning: like David Brunning: we would do David Brunning: like there'd be like David Brunning: skateboard art shows or David Brunning: like you know shows at David Brunning: tattoo shops and stuff so David Brunning: um my first piece i think David Brunning: the first piece i sold was David Brunning: like i had these um yeah i David Brunning: was working at holt David Brunning: food so David Brunning: renfrew so i was doing David Brunning: like visual like doing the David Brunning: windows and mannequins and David Brunning: all kinds of like we're David Brunning: We're just making cool David Brunning: stuff at Holt Renfrew. David Brunning: And from that, they had a David Brunning: that and other uh fantasy David Brunning: bunch of canvases that David Brunning: they used for an David Brunning: installation. David Brunning: footballers and and David Brunning: I took all those. David Brunning: And Heather, my manager at David Brunning: heather you know my David Brunning: manager is based David Brunning: the time, was like, yeah, David Brunning: you can have them. We David Brunning: cleaned out the space down David Brunning: in the lower level at the David Brunning: old location on Stephen David Brunning: Ave. David Brunning: And I took all these David Brunning: canvases, and I started to David Brunning: do these canvases. Prior David Brunning: to that, I was managing a David Brunning: skate shop, a classic one, David Brunning: Skaters, which is no David Brunning: longer. but at skaters i David Brunning: was painting and and my David Brunning: manager at the time uh the David Brunning: owner uh bernie he was David Brunning: like David Brunning: dude he's like just paint David Brunning: some like dc stuff or David Brunning: circa whatever skate David Brunning: company and then the reps David Brunning: would come in and they're David Brunning: like yo here's some free David Brunning: shoes or like you know David Brunning: what i mean like like get David Brunning: some stuff like this is David Brunning: yours it's free for doing David Brunning: this or whatever so it was David Brunning: always like David Brunning: a trade -off there was no David Brunning: like not really any money David Brunning: exchange and i always just David Brunning: loved giving things to David Brunning: people when i worked at David Brunning: joey's right uh back in David Brunning: the day that's how my David Brunning: career like really David Brunning: started to pick up was David Brunning: from the influence i had David Brunning: on those those uh um you David Brunning: know fellow i guess like David Brunning: servers and and backhouse David Brunning: staff and stuff they were David Brunning: all working together and i David Brunning: would do like David Brunning: these doodles and these David Brunning: like pieces and sketches David Brunning: in my in my notebook in my David Brunning: black book and i get David Brunning: I'd them all um man this David Brunning: is going way back but i David Brunning: would get them photocopied David Brunning: at a friend at kinko's and David Brunning: so i at kinko's he David Brunning: photocopied them and then David Brunning: once they were photocopied David Brunning: i'd hand them out at David Brunning: work i'm like yo yo check David Brunning: this out check this out David Brunning: everyone's like yo these David Brunning: are sick like the kitchen David Brunning: staff was always dialed in David Brunning: like they always like a David Brunning: lot of those dudes were David Brunning: like in a skateboarding David Brunning: and obviously in the in David Brunning: the hip -hop and and David Brunning: graffiti art and stuff David Brunning: like that and the front David Brunning: house staff was just like David Brunning: yo this is cool like you David Brunning: got a bunch of pretty David Brunning: girls and cool guys right David Brunning: the front house and the David Brunning: back house is like doing David Brunning: the work and everyone's David Brunning: just vibing together we're David Brunning: all chilling but i'm like David Brunning: handing these things out i David Brunning: bring like my boy would David Brunning: hook me up at kinko David Brunning: so i'd have these big David Brunning: prints and i'm like here David Brunning: you go here you go i was David Brunning: always giving my artwork David Brunning: out i wanted people to see David Brunning: it and experience it and David Brunning: and then like being in the David Brunning: skate scene I'm dead David Brunning: like uh my friend zev and David Brunning: mike they were like the David Brunning: circuit reps and they David Brunning: would throw these like David Brunning: cool art shows you had uh David Brunning: mike and pete you had a David Brunning: giant 45 that store and David Brunning: 945 David Brunning: there'd be these cool art David Brunning: shows David Brunning: where I'd go David Brunning: shows are like yo you want David Brunning: to do some art and i'm David Brunning: like yeah let's do art on David Brunning: skateboards you know we David Brunning: had like a 32 inch i think David Brunning: it was called 32 inch David Brunning: canvas which was like a David Brunning: skateboard art show tons David Brunning: of different little art David Brunning: shows like that and i David Brunning: would just do art and i David Brunning: just wanted to get get it David Brunning: out there and it was David Brunning: really innocent but really David Brunning: fun and we had some big David Brunning: big names i mean jeff David Brunning: mcfetrich i think we had David Brunning: and Patrick David Brunning: heavyweight we had a bunch David Brunning: of cool ben tour there's a David Brunning: bunch of really David Brunning: really great people that David Brunning: were involved involved in David Brunning: that that all that all David Brunning: that work like we all just David Brunning: wanted to make art and David Brunning: so instead David Brunning: create art like i said way David Brunning: before the platforms David Brunning: platform David Brunning: platforms changed a lot David Brunning: so we would just interact David Brunning: and and and connect like David Brunning: organically so i'm doing David Brunning: these shows and i remember David Brunning: i did one show i i forget David Brunning: it was at the circa um David Brunning: first on color that David Brunning: building in David Brunning: inglewood they had their David Brunning: their um their showroom up David Brunning: up above and it was a David Brunning: really dope space it was David Brunning: really really nice and i David Brunning: remember i sold i sold a David Brunning: painting for 150 bucks David Brunning: prior to that show i think David Brunning: i sold one to a friend of David Brunning: mine jeff yeah David Brunning: who bought like it was David Brunning: probably the worst David Brunning: painting like it was i David Brunning: think he still has it to David Brunning: me maybe it's not the David Brunning: worst painting but i did David Brunning: like a street scene or David Brunning: something like i don't David Brunning: even want to know like David Brunning: it's i think he still has David Brunning: it he went on to work David Brunning: for some he was like a David Brunning: with him David Brunning: designer and stuff he went David Brunning: on and worked for some big David Brunning: to work with him David Brunning: companies he's done David Brunning: very well for himself and David Brunning: he bought that for like a David Brunning: hundred bucks so i i think David Brunning: it was like a hundred David Brunning: bucks or something and i David Brunning: did it was like a triptych David Brunning: to England David Brunning: it was like three pieces David Brunning: together right this this David Brunning: scene and i thought it was David Brunning: really cool like it what David Brunning: a good David Brunning: like looking back i was David Brunning: like there's no way David Brunning: like that's in someone's David Brunning: place i mean there's a lot David Brunning: of artwork like that it's David Brunning: humbling but i think first David Brunning: piece i ever sold was 100 David Brunning: bucks and then 150 and David Brunning: then a friend of mine David Brunning: several David Brunning: duane um who's who's David Brunning: an incredible salesman and David Brunning: years David Brunning: he's in menswear at holt David Brunning: um duane norman he djs now David Brunning: uh you know and David Brunning: he's got he's just got David Brunning: he's a photographer he's David Brunning: just an incredible guy he David Brunning: traded me some hugo David Brunning: people bosses David Brunning: boss suits that he had David Brunning: like when i was like a David Brunning: smaller frame and he's David Brunning: like yo i'll trade you David Brunning: these really nice suits David Brunning: because he's in suits David Brunning: right so he's like yo i'll David Brunning: trade you these for that David Brunning: piece and he i think it David Brunning: was like a four foot by David Brunning: four foot piece and i yeah David Brunning: there's so David Brunning: bad i'm laughing at it all David Brunning: because i'm looking back David Brunning: i'm like is it wasn't what David Brunning: it is today it it seems David Brunning: like it seems so long ago David Brunning: kevin when you look at it David Brunning: it seems so long ago you David Brunning: never got your Kevin Halliday: your 100 bucks back Kevin Halliday: because it was that Kevin Halliday: terrible as to keep your Kevin Halliday: painting back it's David Brunning: to think that like 100 David Brunning: bucks or 150 bucks for a David Brunning: painting that 150 $50 David Brunning: painting i got a message David Brunning: on on instagram that $150 David Brunning: painting believe it or not David Brunning: someone bought David Brunning: back in 2004 or something David Brunning: some kid in toronto David Brunning: messaged me on instagram David Brunning: showing me that canvas he David Brunning: bought it at a thrift David Brunning: crystal David Brunning: store for 15 bucks he goes David Brunning: is this actually you like David Brunning: is this fully yours David Brunning: i'm like send me send me David Brunning: some more photos he sends David Brunning: some more photos and i'm David Brunning: like there's no way i'm David Brunning: yeah David Brunning: I'm like, yeah. He goes, David Brunning: can you authenticate it? I David Brunning: was like, what do you need David Brunning: me to do, man? David Brunning: He's like, what did it David Brunning: sell for? you ever David Brunning: I was like, I think it David Brunning: sold for like $150. David Brunning: And whoever bought it David Brunning: probably was like in that David Brunning: time frame. Think about David Brunning: it, right? David Brunning: that That season of their David Brunning: life was like, that's David Brunning: dope. David Brunning: But maybe they got David Brunning: married, had kids. Maybe David Brunning: they they're changing David Brunning: their style changed, David Brunning: whatever, right? David Brunning: So they're like, well, I David Brunning: don't know what to do with David Brunning: this. I'll just give it David Brunning: away. Do you know what I David Brunning: mean? Or wherever. Maybe David Brunning: it was gifted to someone, David Brunning: and that person was like, David Brunning: oh, this is cool. And then David Brunning: they grew out of it. You David Brunning: never know where things David Brunning: end up. David Brunning: are coming but that David Brunning: tripped me out i was like David Brunning: that piece that first David Brunning: piece i sold ended up in David Brunning: my inbox it was probably David Brunning: about seven years ago or David Brunning: whatever and i was like David Brunning: yeah that you bought it David Brunning: for uh ten percent of it David Brunning: so Kevin Halliday: so you look at so you look Kevin Halliday: at the industry back then Kevin Halliday: where it is was about the Kevin Halliday: artistry and true the Kevin Halliday: artistry going in there Kevin Halliday: then you look at yourself Kevin Halliday: and then go into artistry Kevin Halliday: today with AI with with Kevin Halliday: everything that's been Kevin Halliday: happening now and Kevin Halliday: is it true Kevin Halliday: too hard to speak Kevin Halliday: artistry today versus what Kevin Halliday: it was back then David Brunning: That's a loaded question, David Brunning: and I think that's a David Brunning: difficult question to David Brunning: answer. David Brunning: personally Personally, for David Brunning: me, I think AI would allow David Brunning: easily David Brunning: people who might not see David Brunning: themselves as creative to David Brunning: explore their creativity David Brunning: more. David Brunning: I do believe in the early David Brunning: and infant stages of David Brunning: generating imagery through David Brunning: generate David Brunning: AI, you can tell. David Brunning: like it's very clear when David Brunning: clearly David Brunning: so like a lot of ads a lot David Brunning: of like um there's a lot David Brunning: of people that use David Brunning: it for branding or for David Brunning: logos you can see um you David Brunning: can see that it's not David Brunning: coming from David Brunning: a really strong design David Brunning: mind or a strong David Brunning: illustrator mind or a David Brunning: strong artistic mind it's David Brunning: it's not where it could be David Brunning: i i don't i don't i can't David Brunning: use David Brunning: really speak on ai much David Brunning: because i don't David Brunning: use it for if i use it i David Brunning: use it for different tasks David Brunning: like i use it for things David Brunning: that i'm like hey what David Brunning: about this or what about David Brunning: that like there's a David Brunning: there's a just a i don't David Brunning: use it as David Brunning: much as some people would David Brunning: i do see it very clearly David Brunning: when i see something i go David Brunning: that's ai right away i can David Brunning: just tell yeah being an Kevin Halliday: so David Brunning: artist Kevin Halliday: yeah yeah being an artist Kevin Halliday: back then to here we are Kevin Halliday: fast forward today and Kevin Halliday: then the money aspect Kevin Halliday: where Kevin Halliday: oh Kevin Halliday: all of a sudden having the Kevin Halliday: money back then so here we Kevin Halliday: are the artist going in Kevin Halliday: people are buying Kevin Halliday: Well, Kevin Halliday: painting what was your Kevin Halliday: highest painting sold for Kevin Halliday: the most expensive Kevin Halliday: painting you've ever had Kevin Halliday: that you would know Kevin Halliday: ballpark David Brunning: I just sold one for 25K. David Brunning: right David Brunning: So that just went through. David Brunning: And that was a David Brunning: collaboration I did with a David Brunning: mentor and a friend of David Brunning: mine. David Brunning: It was the last painting David Brunning: so David Brunning: out of the entirety of David Brunning: nine paintings we did David Brunning: together. David Brunning: The first were released in David Brunning: 07. The second were David Brunning: released in 09. And there David Brunning: was a total of, I believe, David Brunning: I think we had nine David Brunning: paintings in total David Brunning: together. other and so David Brunning: that was the one that i David Brunning: held in my private David Brunning: remember David Brunning: collection as as my own David Brunning: the rest are all David Brunning: collected throughout the David Brunning: world so um that piece i David Brunning: just sold to a friend of David Brunning: mine because it fit him David Brunning: purchasing it it goes to a David Brunning: place that i know he'll David Brunning: where you you will David Brunning: enjoy it my personal work David Brunning: has exceeded the David Brunning: 15 David Brunning: 15k mark um about 22 22k David Brunning: days then David Brunning: you know what i mean David Brunning: somewhere in there so the David Brunning: range and those are David Brunning: are pretty large paintings David Brunning: things David Brunning: and they're very unique David Brunning: things David Brunning: paintings but on average David Brunning: like it's it's wild to David Brunning: think that because man David Brunning: it's can't David Brunning: this i i can i say David Brunning: something about it there David Brunning: seems to have been a jump David Brunning: lot of people get into art David Brunning: when David Brunning: and with the influence of David Brunning: social media and the David Brunning: influence of the trend of David Brunning: art or the trend of where David Brunning: art goes like you're hot David Brunning: those David Brunning: you're not that's very David Brunning: common David Brunning: in i was calgary's as many David Brunning: curious David Brunning: of my friends have said David Brunning: great friend of mine kent David Brunning: merriman um mentioned David Brunning: had this but um i had a David Brunning: decade they said that's David Brunning: so David Brunning: the kid below's decade David Brunning: 2006 to 2016 and funny David Brunning: 2015 David Brunning: thing David Brunning: in 2016 i actually moved David Brunning: is when you David Brunning: to new zealand so that Kevin Halliday: go David Brunning: decade was magazine David Brunning: articles uh being on shows David Brunning: being interviewed just David Brunning: being kind of going David Brunning: anywhere in the city David Brunning: very David Brunning: however i wanted where i David Brunning: wanted and very very David Brunning: public like i've shared David Brunning: with you a little bit David Brunning: about that time but very David Brunning: public very very out there David Brunning: like always going places David Brunning: and again we i stressed David Brunning: stress David Brunning: the idea of pre -platform David Brunning: free platforms because we David Brunning: had platforms we had first David Brunning: my space David Brunning: myspace which was like David Brunning: great and it was kind of David Brunning: fun it David Brunning: was very innocent and very David Brunning: cool you could code it you David Brunning: could have fun with it and David Brunning: it was still cool and then David Brunning: we and then when facebook David Brunning: launched it was like oh David Brunning: that's kind of a neat David Brunning: thing it's cool like it is David Brunning: what it is and when David Brunning: instagram popped off it David Brunning: was like very very simple David Brunning: and it was like David Brunning: like almost like it was David Brunning: 50 David Brunning: just these early infant David Brunning: years David Brunning: stages. David Brunning: but David Brunning: But during the time of David Brunning: that decade or that time David Brunning: there David Brunning: where I kind of had all David Brunning: this stuff going on, there David Brunning: was an innocence to it. David Brunning: And I look at where my David Brunning: stuff was priced at the David Brunning: start of that, having a David Brunning: massive show in 2005, in David Brunning: that David Brunning: 06, 05, 06, David Brunning: that showed at the Art David Brunning: we are going to jogger David Brunning: Gallery of Calgary. David Brunning: That was with the former David Brunning: manager there, and that David Brunning: came through the pieces I David Brunning: team we David Brunning: handed out. David Brunning: out someone was like do David Brunning: my friend David Brunning: you still do this and i i David Brunning: went ahead and i did it so David Brunning: i said yeah i still do David Brunning: graffiti art are you David Brunning: referring to the pieces David Brunning: that you got my friend David Brunning: sarah she was working with David Brunning: the curator at agc and she David Brunning: agency David Brunning: goes you still do graffiti David Brunning: art i was like what are David Brunning: you referring to the David Brunning: papers i gave you guys at David Brunning: joey's like for real i'm a David Brunning: really David Brunning: lot better than that now David Brunning: yeah what why do David Brunning: you want to know she goes David Brunning: that David Brunning: you got to meet the David Brunning: curator at the agc they David Brunning: was David Brunning: want to do a graffiti David Brunning: art show and so that was David Brunning: called art under pressure David Brunning: and basically connected David Brunning: with them got a bunch of David Brunning: people involved and we did David Brunning: a group show and that David Brunning: group show launched i David Brunning: think december 9th 05 and David Brunning: then David Brunning: we had over 600 people David Brunning: through the door they David Brunning: stopped counting that was David Brunning: private night opening then David Brunning: it opened to the public on David Brunning: december 10th i believe David Brunning: and ran for six months David Brunning: that's when tim David Brunning: we okamura from new york David Brunning: came up to visit saw the David Brunning: do this all David Brunning: work he looked at my work David Brunning: here David Brunning: and he said who's that David Brunning: here i am just painting David Brunning: now i didn't know that we David Brunning: got a little like um a David Brunning: little check for painting David Brunning: lot money because it's David Brunning: it's not a commercial David Brunning: gallery right agc but David Brunning: that's a whole nother David Brunning: story all our most all of David Brunning: our work got got taken David Brunning: from us from that show Kevin Halliday: as and taken away David Brunning: taken as in sold and and Kevin Halliday: okay yeah David Brunning: sold without us knowing David Brunning: for for big money and David Brunning: oh David Brunning: you Kevin Halliday: that was all oh Kevin Halliday: didn't make and you didn't Kevin Halliday: make any money David Brunning: no that her neighbor had like David Brunning: i'm telling you my work my David Brunning: life has been i should David Brunning: pressure to David Brunning: write a book man it's it's David Brunning: but David Brunning: it's a lot but there i am David Brunning: leaning off the balcony David Brunning: and i look over and it's a David Brunning: it's a painting of me that David Brunning: my brother matthew did i David Brunning: took a photo of myself David Brunning: like this down on the David Brunning: ground with like my David Brunning: puppy David Brunning: puffy jacket on outside of David Brunning: the David Brunning: cafe bino it was cold one David Brunning: day and i just looked down David Brunning: at him brother painted me David Brunning: and my brother's David Brunning: a few times he painted Tower, there's my face. David Brunning: But it wasn't based on ego David Brunning: or I need to get my name David Brunning: out. It was just I was so David Brunning: enthusiastic and so bright David Brunning: about David Brunning: eyed to paint and to do David Brunning: my David Brunning: murals and to do all that David Brunning: stuff. David Brunning: My brother would end up David Brunning: help David Brunning: painting me on that wall David Brunning: so David Brunning: because it was just easy David Brunning: for him. David Brunning: He was just like, I know David Brunning: that face. I'll paint it. David Brunning: And he's really talented. David Brunning: That guy is incredibly David Brunning: talented. So I'm leaning David Brunning: over the balcony. i look David Brunning: inside and sure enough i'm David Brunning: like whose place is that David Brunning: why is that painting up David Brunning: got David Brunning: there David Brunning: and i got it got emotional David Brunning: i got upset i was just David Brunning: like what's up like i want David Brunning: that painting David Brunning: well time goes by we don't David Brunning: get the painting then i'm Kevin Halliday: and David Brunning: like sitting there at a David Brunning: friend's backyard David Brunning: barbecue or something like David Brunning: that some guys having David Brunning: drinks and i'm sitting David Brunning: there talking to him by David Brunning: my dad David Brunning: the fire and he's like yo David Brunning: hey David Brunning: you're that you're that David Brunning: artist guy and i'm like David Brunning: yeah what's up his name David Brunning: name was noah and i'm like David Brunning: what's up dude he's like David Brunning: yeah you did that big show David Brunning: hey David Brunning: you that show David Brunning: was sick man i think i was David Brunning: bartending that show or David Brunning: yeah David Brunning: something right and i David Brunning: looked at him i was like David Brunning: yeah thank you yeah that David Brunning: was yeah it was a dope David Brunning: show at the agc it was David Brunning: great but i have a sour David Brunning: taste from what happened David Brunning: this woman that ran the David Brunning: randomly David Brunning: place gave us a envelope David Brunning: an David Brunning: with 200 cash in it and David Brunning: she David Brunning: she goes yeah you know we David Brunning: can't sell the artwork David Brunning: because it's it's graffiti David Brunning: that David Brunning: art we're not able to David Brunning: sell it and i don't know David Brunning: anything so of course this David Brunning: person that knows more David Brunning: than me about i don't know David Brunning: the art world like all the David Brunning: politics and the bs that's David Brunning: that i now know there's a David Brunning: lot of politics and bs in David Brunning: well David Brunning: the fine art world there David Brunning: is there's a lot of great David Brunning: things about it too right David Brunning: but it's David Brunning: it's a it can be a weird David Brunning: thing right the who's who David Brunning: and the what's what and David Brunning: how you move and and who David Brunning: you collect and who you Brunning: talking to me in the David Brunning: backyard and he goes my David Brunning: friend's got your uh your David Brunning: painting and i was just David Brunning: like right away i went who David Brunning: told me his name and i David Brunning: yeah David Brunning: said no way David Brunning: he goes yeah the big one David Brunning: with your screaming face David Brunning: that big piece and i'm David Brunning: like he has that Kevin Halliday: you knew the guy David Brunning: no i didn't know him i David Brunning: knew his name because of David Brunning: his mother that was the David Brunning: the person who ran that David Brunning: that gallery that was her David Brunning: yeah David Brunning: son i go he's got what you David Brunning: know that piece with you David Brunning: screaming the David Brunning: screaming face your face David Brunning: and then the the graffiti David Brunning: i said yeah he goes he has Kevin Halliday: because David Brunning: that in his house and i David Brunning: said no way that's she David Brunning: told me that sold to a David Brunning: collector in toronto that David Brunning: they shipped it out to David Brunning: toronto and they couldn't David Brunning: make any money on it so David Brunning: they just they shipped David Brunning: whatever they did i'm like David Brunning: what i've never seen that David Brunning: painting since i've never David Brunning: seen that painting since David Brunning: and they cut it it in half David Brunning: they basically took the David Brunning: graffiti part sliced it David Brunning: and took the face part and David Brunning: made two pieces of it and David Brunning: i'm like i don't even know David Brunning: i heard last time i heard David Brunning: it was in alaska or David Brunning: this David Brunning: something like the yukon David Brunning: or something like this David Brunning: thing is it's pretty dope David Brunning: i'm i you can see the David Brunning: emotion in me today but David Brunning: it's all forgiven and David Brunning: forgotten it's just it's David Brunning: one of those things David Brunning: where i'm like what you David Brunning: actually took these pieces David Brunning: of work the one that was David Brunning: in the the neighbor's David Brunning: place small story friends David Brunning: of mine derek and jen David Brunning: fantastic couple they um David Brunning: they've they've created David Brunning: some amazing businesses David Brunning: many of which we enjoy um David Brunning: enjoyed David Brunning: and and jen was like hey i David Brunning: they David Brunning: really want to David Brunning: commission a beautiful David Brunning: painting for my brother David Brunning: and i was like for sure David Brunning: and so you know i was like David Brunning: uh they they said this is David Brunning: the idea behind this David Brunning: thing David Brunning: painting so i took all the David Brunning: information created David Brunning: this really elaborate and David Brunning: and beautiful work of art David Brunning: and i said okay let's David Brunning: install it in his house David Brunning: i go up to the top floor David Brunning: no David Brunning: of the penthouse of this David Brunning: uh this building downtown David Brunning: walk into the place to David Brunning: install it guess what's on David Brunning: the wall that painting of David Brunning: me that my brother did Kevin Halliday: i David Brunning: walk in i installed the David Brunning: a thing David Brunning: painting i just completed David Brunning: for him he they surprised David Brunning: me and we David Brunning: him with this painting David Brunning: he's overwhelmed David Brunning: he's like i want to meet David Brunning: him got that he said the woman David Brunning: from the gallery sold it David Brunning: to us i said how much did David Brunning: you pay for it he gave me David Brunning: the number and i said David Brunning: there's no David Brunning: way you paid that much for David Brunning: that painting yep and then David Brunning: day David Brunning: when he when he um uh David Brunning: there was a David Brunning: you gotta David Brunning: okay Kevin Halliday: tell me how much it was David Brunning: she gave us 200 bucks each David Brunning: no David Brunning: and David Brunning: I she ended up taking Brunning: that show there's three David Brunning: paintings me and my David Brunning: brother did a collab my David Brunning: brother did one of me i David Brunning: did one for myself and David Brunning: then i did like a smaller David Brunning: piece that was also sold David Brunning: so i was David Brunning: just in i was just in David Brunning: shock and it wasn't David Brunning: do one of the biggest David Brunning: murals to date in the city David Brunning: of calgary i think it was David Brunning: it was huge and it was all David Brunning: leveled because they're David Brunning: level David Brunning: gonna they were gonna David Brunning: build east village right David Brunning: so it's 2010 and there i David Brunning: was David Brunning: am painting like a 30 foot David Brunning: high or whatever i David Brunning: think it's like 30 or 25 David Brunning: feet high it's big by 100 David Brunning: feet wide mural and David Brunning: everyone from city hall David Brunning: was looking was looking David Brunning: out and seeing east David Brunning: village like it was just David Brunning: you know all these private David Brunning: companies I David Brunning: hiring me to paint the David Brunning: was David Brunning: inside of their their David Brunning: spaces um i'm David Brunning: grateful for it all it David Brunning: just to me was i didn't David Brunning: in David Brunning: looking back i didn't David Brunning: realize i was like yeah David Brunning: i i was at the forefront David Brunning: of this stuff and then of David Brunning: course when peter and David Brunning: with David Brunning: peter when i would go to David Brunning: the gym i'd see peter at David Brunning: the gym and David Brunning: then we'd have coffee in David Brunning: we had David Brunning: the morning at analog on David Brunning: and had a lot of David Brunning: 17th which was like my David Brunning: hangout forever i lived David Brunning: four blocks from there for David Brunning: a lot of David Brunning: 16 years and peter would David Brunning: come in and he's like i David Brunning: he didn't mural thing and David Brunning: want to start this David Brunning: so how did bump get David Brunning: take David Brunning: started hey david let's David Brunning: it David Brunning: talk to you let's rack David Brunning: wrap David Brunning: your brain David Brunning: like what should artists David Brunning: get paid i broke all that David Brunning: down and so it was just David Brunning: like this what they should David Brunning: get paid here's your first David Brunning: couple walls this is who David Brunning: you need to talk to blah David Brunning: blah let's David Brunning: start and they start to David Brunning: develop and and David Brunning: I don't think the board or David Brunning: that David Brunning: the shareholders or David Brunning: just the employees in that David Brunning: place understand what you David Brunning: just did for me or what David Brunning: people have done for me David Brunning: their entire lives. When David Brunning: they sit there and they're David Brunning: like, I'm commissioning David Brunning: that painting David Brunning: for 22k or that painting David Brunning: for 15 % fee. David Brunning: for 16 a lot of the world David Brunning: looks at that and says oh David Brunning: i can't afford you David Brunning: oh look at you i can't David Brunning: afford you i remember i David Brunning: bought myself a used David Brunning: mercedes back in the day David Brunning: just a c -class because i David Brunning: wanted to drive a mercedes David Brunning: and i thought it was fun David Brunning: it was like a c350 or David Brunning: whatever right like you David Brunning: got the four -wheel David Brunning: steering whatever i don't David Brunning: even know like it's all David Brunning: all -wheel drive and it's David Brunning: all just whatever so i buy David Brunning: this thing remember David Brunning: pulling up to one of my David Brunning: clients and he's a good David Brunning: friend of mine and he was David Brunning: just razzing me sorry you David Brunning: know but i pulled up he David Brunning: got he's got two brand new David Brunning: ranges in the driveway David Brunning: right he's got a beautiful David Brunning: home and i've painted David Brunning: a lot for him i really David Brunning: really enjoy him and um David Brunning: he's done some beautiful David Brunning: things when his kids are David Brunning: born i painted paintings David Brunning: I've painted a lot. David Brunning: when they're born he's David Brunning: like they're gonna have it David Brunning: for their whole life David Brunning: you know so anyways i pull David Brunning: up and he's like he looks David Brunning: at me goes man we we pay David Brunning: you too much just i looked David Brunning: at it i was like man i'm David Brunning: like i just wanted to try David Brunning: driving that car and i David Brunning: I think I have a small David Brunning: think i David Brunning: i kevin i think i paid David Brunning: like 12 grand for that car David Brunning: brand David Brunning: used right like it was it David Brunning: wasn't new can't afford a David Brunning: ninety thousand dollar you David Brunning: It's $190 ,000, $200 ,000, David Brunning: know a hundred thousand David Brunning: whatever they are and to David Brunning: whatever they are. David Brunning: me it doesn't David Brunning: matter it didn't really it David Brunning: It's a little unfortunate. And David Brunning: you don't really have David Brunning: time to push more than David Brunning: whatever artists you have. David Brunning: that. So in me taking on David Brunning: my own sales, my own David Brunning: I recommend David Brunning: commissions, all that kind David Brunning: of stuff, I've recognized David Brunning: that I don't think people David Brunning: understand what it is when David Brunning: they go and say, David, I David Brunning: want you to do this. I David Brunning: want you to paint this. David Brunning: And then they ghost you or David Brunning: something's David Brunning: come up in their life, David Brunning: legitimate or David Brunning: illegitimate, whatever the David Brunning: case. And they don't David Brunning: communicate to you. They David Brunning: don't take the time to David Brunning: say, hey, can we put this David Brunning: on hold for right now? David Brunning: I've got to to put my David Brunning: finances somewhere else David Brunning: phone in. David Brunning: they just stop or they say David Brunning: yeah i'd really like to do David Brunning: this well David Brunning: great you can also say hey David Brunning: i would love to have your David Brunning: work someday it's just out David Brunning: of my wheelhouse right now David Brunning: there's just the David Brunning: communication aspect in David Brunning: the art world is very David Brunning: interesting and um and it David Brunning: you know i everything that David Brunning: someone all the David Brunning: interactions i have with David Brunning: that's what we're going to David Brunning: with my clients and David Brunning: amazing people they are um David Brunning: the best ones are the ones David Brunning: that are like do what you David Brunning: do. Some are David Brunning: legitimate means of David Brunning: income. Some probably David Brunning: aren't legitimate means of David Brunning: income. David Brunning: Who cares? Who knows? David Brunning: Right. Some some artists David Brunning: are heavily praised David Brunning: because they look good. David Brunning: they they they do work David Brunning: that people feel is common David Brunning: or it's it's it it you David Brunning: know it's a style that David Brunning: They're not going to do David Brunning: they David Brunning: can resonate with they're David Brunning: like that you know what i David Brunning: that. David Brunning: name to like alberta David Brunning: something university of David Brunning: the arts or David Brunning: whatever but they i don't David Brunning: even know what it's called David Brunning: now but a cat he was there David Brunning: but when he saw my work he David Brunning: was like wow that felt David Brunning: amazing but i was like David Brunning: who's this guy and then David Brunning: everyone's like like dude David Brunning: tim wants to paint with David Brunning: you when i sold um when i David Brunning: started to sell like that David Brunning: my head was David Brunning: spinning when i came out David Brunning: of that show at access David Brunning: with rob maybe rob maybe David Brunning: believed in me and could David Brunning: see my like he he's like David Brunning: you're brilliant and so he David Brunning: ran that gallery and rob David Brunning: was like you're brilliant David Brunning: and i'm bringing tim David Brunning: together and you and tim David Brunning: are coming together and David Brunning: you're going to David Brunning: paint and it David Brunning: was remarkable to to David Brunning: experience someone so David Brunning: qualified and someone so David Brunning: well known like he tim is David Brunning: so well known in new york David Brunning: like people know him the David Brunning: I hope David Brunning: whole like hip -hop David Brunning: community David Brunning: everything like people David Brunning: just know tim and to be David Brunning: able to paint with him and David Brunning: collab with him carl white David Brunning: said this once to me and David Brunning: he's a great great carl's David Brunning: work i love he said i David Brunning: think tim's David Brunning: work changed after you David Brunning: guys painted together like David Brunning: it even became more David Brunning: vibrant um there's a lot David Brunning: of give and take with David Brunning: artists right and you're David Brunning: right it's subjective but David Brunning: it's also really diverse David Brunning: verse to an artist who has David Brunning: a deep financial backing David Brunning: a lot of experience David Brunning: and there are quite a few David Brunning: out there that David Brunning: do um it probably feels David Brunning: great i i can't speak for David Brunning: them you know to someone David Brunning: who's come from nothing David Brunning: someone who um who has David Brunning: come up without the means David Brunning: of you know um you know i David Brunning: i wasn't educated in David Brunning: the arts and uh i i you David Brunning: know i definitely have not David Brunning: come from a place of of David Brunning: what was once shared with David Brunning: me in calgary where i was David Brunning: around all these people David Brunning: all these great people i David Brunning: loved and then David Brunning: a friend of mine said hey David Brunning: man like i said they oh David Brunning: man i love their store i David Brunning: love what they're doing David Brunning: with this and then that David Brunning: show was sick their David Brunning: artwork's sick and he David Brunning: looked at me i'll keep it David Brunning: as is but he's like what David Brunning: you mean i said yeah David Brunning: you're doing amazing stuff David Brunning: he goes of course they can David Brunning: i go what do you mean of David Brunning: course they can like i was David Brunning: like left in the dark i David Brunning: was like like what do you David Brunning: mean like i love what David Brunning: they're doing and then i David Brunning: got my vision skewed David Brunning: because David Brunning: i said oh those are David Brunning: glencoe kids and i said David Brunning: what's glencoe what's David Brunning: what's a glencoe what's David Brunning: the glencoe like i don't David Brunning: have no idea what the David Brunning: glencoe is and i hope this David Brunning: doesn't ruffle David Brunning: Oh, no, no. David Brunning: move with such a David Brunning: curiosity or such a trust David Brunning: in people. You know, in my David Brunning: early days, like I trusted David Brunning: I got ripped off a bunch. David Brunning: There's there's a bunch of David Brunning: stuff that happened in my David Brunning: early days, where I was David Brunning: just David Brunning: ripped off, I was taken David Brunning: advantage of I was, you David Brunning: know, but these people are David Brunning: just like, they had money, David Brunning: they came from money, or David Brunning: They didn't work for them. David Brunning: they knew how to work the David Brunning: money or work the system David Brunning: or something. David Brunning: So being an artist, one David Brunning: thing that really, really David Brunning: makes me very happy and David Brunning: I'm very, very thankful David Brunning: for it is the observation David Brunning: reality of being an David Brunning: artist.
