- 0:01Luke chapter 16. Let us pray.
- 0:06Oh Heavenly Father, here we are again.
- 0:08We come to serve you and to love you, Lord.
- 0:12We come to love on you and be loved by you.
- 0:15Thank you Jesus for another day. Thank you Jesus for waking us up
- 0:19and putting us on our feet. Thank you Jesus for life and
- 0:22life abundantly. Thank you Jesus for the promise
- 0:25of eternity. Thank you God, I pray that
- 0:28you'll wreck us with your love today.
- 0:30God, I pray that you will be glorified in the highest Holy
- 0:34Spirit. Teach us.
- 0:35I decrease as you increase. It's all about you, King Jesus,
- 0:39and we love you, and it's in your holy and precious name that
- 0:42I pray. Amen.
- 0:45Let's start in verse one. And he said also unto his
- 0:50disciples, there was a certain rich man which had a steward,
- 0:55and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his
- 0:59goods. So here it is, Jesus turning to
- 1:04his disciples, and he wants to teach them a very valuable
- 1:07lesson, friends, and he wants to teach us the same lesson today
- 1:11too. And he called him and said unto
- 1:14him, How is it that I hear this of you?
- 1:18Give an account of your stewardship, for you may be no
- 1:21longer steward. So this was the manager, and he
- 1:26was in charge of his master's wealth, and he had squandered
- 1:32it, and it had came to the master's ears and he called him
- 1:37into account. And we will all give an account
- 1:41for the life that we have lived and for the things that we have
- 1:44done. And there will be a judgment for
- 1:49the righteous. And then there will be the Great
- 1:51White Throne, where every single person will have to give an
- 1:56account for the life that they have lived.
- 1:59And all that we need to know is that we served Christ and that
- 2:08we are covered in his blood and that we plead the blood of Jesus
- 2:13Christ. And if you will come into the
- 2:17fold, the Father will say, well done, good and faithful
- 2:22servants. And we need to make sure that we
- 2:25are stewarding this little lifetime that he's given us.
- 2:29And we are completely sold out to the King of kings and the
- 2:33Lord of Lords. And we're not making this life
- 2:36all about sin and self and pleasure, friends.
- 2:40It's all about King Jesus. And he might call you into the
- 2:44unreached people groups. He might call you into the
- 2:48business world, but either way, you need to be his and his alone
- 2:56and you need to be found stewarding the blessings that
- 3:00he's given you. And your life is a blessing.
- 3:03It's not just about the material, it's not just about
- 3:07wealth, it's not just about money, friends.
- 3:10It's the talents that he's given you.
- 3:13It is the time that you have left is also what we need to be
- 3:18stewarding well, and we will have to give an account for
- 3:25three. And then the steward said within
- 3:26himself, what shall I do? For my Lord takes away from me
- 3:30the stewardship. I cannot dig and to beg.
- 3:33I'm ashamed. You know, this poor manager, he
- 3:40didn't want to have to do manual labor and he didn't want to have
- 3:44to beg. So here he's going to be very
- 3:48shrewd before I am resolved what to do that when I am put out of
- 3:54the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
- 3:59So here this is Jesus telling us how we should behave and he's
- 4:04not condoning the mismanagement of the appropriation of funds.
- 4:10He's not condoning it, friends. He's telling us that we need to
- 4:14be very shrewd with how we navigate through this world and
- 4:20through this life, and we need to make sure that we're
- 4:23connected to the Vine. And he's going to show us that
- 4:28when we are in tune with him, sometimes he will call us to do
- 4:34things that other people might not understand. 5 So he called
- 4:40every one of his Lords debtors unto him, and said unto the
- 4:44first, How much do you owe, my Lord?
- 4:476 And he said, 100 measures of oil.
- 4:50And he said unto him, Take your bill, Sit down quickly and write
- 4:5350 seven. Then he said to another, How
- 4:57much do you owe? And he said, 100 measures of
- 4:59wheat. And he said unto him, Take your
- 5:02bill and write 4 score. And the Lord commended the
- 5:05unjust steward because he had done wisely.
- 5:09For the children of this world are in their generation wiser
- 5:14than the children of light. And this calls for wisdom.
- 5:17Friends, the Lord calls us to be shrewd managers of all of the
- 5:24resources that He has entrusted to us for this very day.
- 5:31And you remember the widow's mite.
- 5:34You remember that she had given up everything to live on.
- 5:38And God calls us into a plan that we must rely on Him and Him
- 5:52alone. He calls us on a wild adventure
- 5:55of trust. And that is the key to this
- 5:59verse, is that we must trust Him more than we trust our own
- 6:05abilities. We must trust Him more than what
- 6:10the world tells us. We have to get to a place with
- 6:14the Lord Jesus Christ that He is enough and that everything that
- 6:20we have is seen through the lens of a gift from the Father, even
- 6:25our very next breath, even our very heartbeat in our chest.
- 6:31And if you have the one, if you just have a dollar, if you have
- 6:35$1.00 in your bank account, the Lord desires for you to use that
- 6:43for Him. Not for sin and not for self
- 6:47friends, but to honor Him with every single resource that you
- 6:52have. And if you are faithful with a
- 6:54little, you'll be faithful with much.
- 6:56And we have to be wise and shrewd friends.
- 7:02He says that he's sending us out like sheep among wolves.
- 7:09Be as gentle as doves, and to be as wise as serpents. 9 And I say
- 7:17unto you, Make to yourselves, friends of the mammon of
- 7:20unrighteousness, that when you fail, you may, they may receive
- 7:25you into everlasting habitations.
- 7:28So there are many that are going to enter into heaven as if they
- 7:31escaped out of a fire. And just remember that all the
- 7:36things that we do down here are going to matter for eternity.
- 7:42Once you give your life over to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:47He is taking into account for the rewards that you will
- 7:52receive. And there are many in this
- 7:55lifetime who are suffering but will be rewarded greatly in
- 8:02eternity. And praise God, Hallelujah that
- 8:06the first shall be last and the last shall be first.
- 8:09And it's an upside down, inside out kind of Kingdom.
- 8:12And I pray to the Lord that as we are kicking our can down the
- 8:18road, that they will invite us into their heavenly abode, into
- 8:24their mansions, that the Lord said He was going to prepare a
- 8:28place for us. And in our Father's house there
- 8:32are many mansions. And I pray that we are invited
- 8:34into those places at this time. Tan And he that is faithful in
- 8:42that which is least is faithful also in much.
- 8:46And he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in the
- 8:51much. So we can see here that God's
- 8:55not going to continue to lavish upon us the blessings if we're
- 9:00not even stewarding the little bit that he's given us already.
- 9:04We need to steward the Be faithful with little friends.
- 9:08Be faithful with your mammon, be faithful with it and watch how
- 9:13he increases it. Watch how he increases the
- 9:16dominion that you have over this earth. 11 If, therefore, you
- 9:22have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will
- 9:26commit to your trust the true riches.
- 9:29So the most delicate thing that we will ever handle in this
- 9:34lifetime is another person's destination whenever we are
- 9:40presenting the gospel to them, friends.
- 9:43But if our witness is skewed because we are not living the
- 9:51right way and we are not stewarding the resources that
- 9:55God has given us, well then no one's going to listen to us.
- 10:00Our witness is completely demolished and that is a tactic
- 10:06of the enemy. He cannot snatch you out of the
- 10:08Lord's hand, but he sure can get you to make a mess out of your
- 10:13witness. And we need to make sure that we
- 10:16are living the right way so that we have a voice over this wicked
- 10:22and perverse generation, and we can lead many into the righteous
- 10:27path, the straight gate. 12 And if you have not been faithful in
- 10:32that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is
- 10:36your own. So he's saying that we must be
- 10:41faithful even if it's not our own.
- 10:45And God's not going to give us dominion over much if we can't
- 10:51even steward other people's wealth correctly. 13 No servant
- 10:56can serve 2 masters, for either he will hate the one and love
- 11:00the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the
- 11:03other. You cannot serve God and Mammon.
- 11:08There is no possible way that you can have one foot on the
- 11:13boat and 1 foot in the water. You're either going to be
- 11:16completely sold out to God or you're going to be completely
- 11:20sold out to money. You cannot serve one or the
- 11:24other. If you love God, you're going to
- 11:26hate money, friends, you're going to hate it because it
- 11:31divides people. And we need to know that if we
- 11:35find ourselves in a situation where we have much, it is so
- 11:40that we can be a blessing to others.
- 11:42It's very simple. 14 And the Pharisees also, who were
- 11:46covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him.
- 11:50So it was a thought process in the land of this day that if you
- 11:55were wealthy, it was because God was pleased with you.
- 11:57And so these Pharisees, they thought that wealth was proof
- 12:01that God was all in their lives. And here Jesus flips the script,
- 12:08and he's good at turning the tables over and driving out the
- 12:11money changers. 15 And he said unto them, You are they which
- 12:15justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.
- 12:21For that which is highly esteemed among men is abominate
- 12:27abomination in the sight of God. So we can see here that God
- 12:34doesn't look at it the way that we do.
- 12:37We think that because somebody is thriving in this life, it
- 12:42shows that God's in it. But God sees that they are
- 12:46ravenous wolves. They're just suit and ties and
- 12:50they care nothing for the little flock.
- 12:52And God sees it, and it's an abomination. 16 The law and the
- 12:56prophets were until John. Since that time the Kingdom of
- 13:00God is preached, and every man presses into it.
- 13:05We know that we must take the Kingdom of God by violence and
- 13:10press into it. Friends, we cannot just sit on
- 13:12the sidelines. We cannot just sit on our
- 13:15blessed assurance. We must.
- 13:17We must get into the game, friends.
- 13:21We must keep pressing towards the heavenly goal.
- 13:25If you woke up this morning, God's not done with you.
- 13:28If you have breath in your lungs, God's not done with you.
- 13:31Let's get in the game. Let's take the Kingdom by force.
- 13:35Friends, we can see here that everything changed after John
- 13:42the Baptist. That the least in the Kingdom of
- 13:45God is more than John and all the prophets before.
- 13:55Because we house the Holy Spirit, we actually have God
- 14:03Almighty living inside of us. And then he says in 17, It is
- 14:13easier for heaven and earth to pass than one title of the law
- 14:18to fail. Heaven and earth shall pass
- 14:20away, but not one of these words, not one jot, not one
- 14:24title. They stand the test of time.
- 14:29They are never going to go away. You cannot dispute and discredit
- 14:36the word of God. It is here to stay.
- 14:38It is infallible and inerrant 18.
- 14:41Whoever puts away his wife and marries another commits
- 14:44adultery, and whosoever marries her, that is put away from her
- 14:48husband commits adultery. And Jesus here is showing us
- 14:52that unless there is infidelity, unless your spouse cheats on
- 14:56you, then God does not consider you unmarried, even though you
- 15:02might get an unrighteous judge to give you that certificate. 19
- 15:09There was a certain man who was clothed in purple and fine linen
- 15:13and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar
- 15:17named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate full of sores. 21 He
- 15:22desired to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich
- 15:25man's table. Moreover, the dogs came and
- 15:28licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass that the beggar died and
- 15:32was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom.
- 15:36And the rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in hell he
- 15:43lifted up, his eyes, being in torment, and he saw Abraham afar
- 15:49off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried, and said,
- 15:56Father Abraham, have mercy on me, send Lazarus, that he may
- 16:01dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I
- 16:05am in torment in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember
- 16:13that you and your lifetime received you good things, and
- 16:19likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted and you
- 16:26are tormented. So we can see here that prior to
- 16:31the cross of Christ, this Abraham's bosom, this was a
- 16:35place where the patriarchs and all the righteous were there in
- 16:42Abraham's bosom. We can also see that there is a
- 16:48place where all the unrighteous went.
- 16:51And during this time, prior to the cross of Christ, there was a
- 16:55great chasm between them. And then we know that Jesus,
- 17:02when he died on Silent Saturday, he went down to hell and he
- 17:07preached to the spirits there. And we know that he led a great
- 17:11procession out, and he closed that part of Abraham's bosom.
- 17:16And now whenever the righteous died, just like the thief on the
- 17:20cross, they are with him in paradise, as Paul tells us that
- 17:23he was caught up to the 3rd heaven and experienced things
- 17:27that no man was allowed to talk talk about this paradise.
- 17:30And we know that when we are absent from the body, we are
- 17:34present with the Lord, praise God, Hallelujah.
- 17:37But those who never put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 17:42this is where they go. They go to the place of torment,
- 17:45friends, where there is fire and they are thirsty, and you can
- 17:52see that there is torment there. And we can see that there are
- 17:56many here on this earth that are living sumptuously, and they're
- 18:01having their grand time now. But they will be ascribed to
- 18:06hell. They will be ascribed to
- 18:08torment, friends. But we know that when we die, we
- 18:13are with him in paradise. One second after you die,
- 18:19friends, you will regret not putting your faith in the Lord
- 18:25Jesus Christ. And for those of us who have,
- 18:30the second that we die, we will be in His presence, and we will
- 18:34experience joy and joy and joy abounding, and it will be
- 18:42paradise. 26 And besides all this, between US and you,
- 18:50there's a great gulf fixed, so that they which would pass from
- 18:55you from here to you cannot, neither can they pass to us that
- 19:00would come from there. So we can see there is no
- 19:03purgatory, friends. There's no spiritual
- 19:07progression, friends. There's no reincarnation
- 19:12friends. There is only two choices.
- 19:15There's heaven and there's hell. There's not 1/3 option friends.
- 19:19And the thing that marks the clear definitive decision of
- 19:25where you go is, are you just dunked in water?
- 19:29Are you washed in the blood? Are you just going through the
- 19:34religious, dogmatic approach of ceremony, or are you actually
- 19:41connected to the vine and bearing much fruit?
- 19:46He knows who belongs to him. We cannot stand there and say,
- 19:50Lord, Lord. 27 Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, that
- 19:58you would send him to my father's house. 28 For I have 5
- 20:01brothers, that they may testify unto them, unless they also come
- 20:06into this place of torment. 29 Abraham said unto him, They have
- 20:10Moses the prophets, let them hear them. 30 And he said, No,
- 20:14father Abraham, but if one went unto them from the dead, they
- 20:18would repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they would not hear
- 20:21Moses and the prophets, neither will they be.
- 20:24Persuaded though, 1 rose from the dead, and Jesus rose from
- 20:28the dead, friends. And we are here 2000 years
- 20:32removed from that and people are still denying God and denying
- 20:38Christ and they are still sending themselves to hell.
- 20:41And that is what Jesus is referencing here.
- 20:44And he's showing this rich man that just because he was a child
- 20:51of Abraham did not mean that he didn't have to go to hell.
- 20:54And just because we're good people doesn't mean that we
- 20:56don't go to hell. We send ourselves there.
- 20:59And it's only by the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 21:01He is the way, the truth, and the life.
- 21:03And no one comes unto the Father except through him.
- 21:07I hope you've been blessed by this chapter here.
- 21:10What a a deep dive we could do on this.
- 21:13We could spend a lifetime uncovering all the truths of
- 21:16what Jesus revealed to us of the afterlife, but suffice to say,
- 21:22He is enough. I'm praying for you, love you,
- 21:27and we'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 21:30God bless you.
