- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Paul was called to communicate the heart of God.
- 0:41So Paul wasn't there to protest against slaves.
- 0:44And we see the word slaves. This is not slaves the way that,
- 0:48you know, certain groups of people had to endure.
- 0:51Obviously I'm African American, so my experience and
- 0:55understanding about slaves is much different.
- 0:58He's not talking about a group of people who's being oppressed.
- 1:02Slaves are actually people who serve other people, and some of
- 1:06them give themselves to do it. What does it look like to speak
- 1:09God's heart instead of just protesting the world's wrongs?
- 1:13In today's message, Pastor Lewis explains that Paul was sent to
- 1:16reveal the heart of God, not to March against every injustice.
- 1:21When Scripture speaks of slaves, it's not describing the brutal
- 1:26oppression some groups have endured.
- 1:29It refers to servants who willingly bound themselves to
- 1:32another. Paul's calling was bigger than
- 1:35political reform. How do you focus on sharing
- 1:37God's heart above every other 'cause now?
- 1:40Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter 6,
- 1:44with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:47First Timothy Chapter 6. Now as we go into First Timothy
- 1:52Chapter 6, this is going to be more about instruction, more
- 1:56instruction that Paul is giving to his young son, Timothy.
- 2:00And as I asked you, what helps me because I'm kind of my wife
- 2:04and myself are kind of visual people.
- 2:07And I like to envision Paul not just handing Timothy a letter,
- 2:12but I like to envision Paul sitting before Timothy and
- 2:15instructing him. Much like the way that you have
- 2:19mentors that you sit in front of or people that you spend time
- 2:23with. And I like to envision Timothy
- 2:25sitting before his father in the Spirit and receiving all these
- 2:30truths and receiving these instructions and how personal
- 2:35Paul is about giving those instructions, both corporately
- 2:39for the church. Because Paul knew that this
- 2:41would be read. It was intended to be read
- 2:43before the church, just like it was intended in God's
- 2:46foreknowledge that it would be read before this church.
- 2:48Amen. But I'd like to imagine the fact
- 2:51that Timothy is getting this first hand instruction, these
- 2:54things that can have serious impact on his life and also on
- 2:59the life of the church. So as we read through this,
- 3:02we'll begin to see how God in his foreknowledge and in his
- 3:07sovereignty, how he speaks to very important situations,
- 3:11specifically giving instruction to his young pastor Timothy.
- 3:18So we start with verse one, and he says, let as many bond
- 3:22servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy
- 3:27of all honor, so that the name of God and his doctrine may not
- 3:31be blasphemed. And those who have believing
- 3:34masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren,
- 3:39but rather serve them because those who are benefited are
- 3:44believers. And beloved, teach, teach and
- 3:47exhort these things. Timothy.
- 3:50So basically what we're seeing here is that Paul is now
- 3:53speaking to those who are in the church or about those who are in
- 3:57the church who are slaves. Now when we see the word slaves
- 4:01and now a lot of people, you know, feel like, well, wait a
- 4:04minute. Why is Paul giving him
- 4:05instructions about how to act as slaves and not being a little
- 4:10harder about the fact that there are slaves?
- 4:14And it's a very simple explanation for that.
- 4:17Paul wasn't called to do that. He wasn't called to protest
- 4:22against being slaves or not being slaves.
- 4:26Paul was called to preach the gospel.
- 4:29Paul was called to teach doctrine.
- 4:32Paul was called to communicate the heart of God.
- 4:36So Paul wasn't there to protest against slaves.
- 4:39And we see the word slaves. This is not slaves the way that,
- 4:43you know, certain groups of people had to endure.
- 4:46Obviously, I'm African American, so my experience and
- 4:50understanding about slaves is much different.
- 4:53He's not talking about a group of people who was being
- 4:55oppressed. Slaves are actually people who
- 4:58serve other people, and some of them give themselves to do it
- 5:03because they can't pay debts or they can't feed their families
- 5:06or or they can't take care of themselves.
- 5:08Or maybe they owed something and because they couldn't pay it,
- 5:11they were sold into this. So Paul is saying it doesn't
- 5:18matter about the fact that you're a slave.
- 5:20What matter is that you are demonstrating godliness in the
- 5:26fact that you are being a slave. So as we look at this today, how
- 5:31will we communicate this today? We all have employers and we are
- 5:35employees, so it would be the same thing.
- 5:39How do we act on our job? How do we treat our bosses?
- 5:45How do we respond to things on the job?
- 5:49Now, this is particularly personal for me because just to
- 5:53give you a little quick illustration of how wrong we can
- 5:57do this thing, there was a time many years ago when I worked for
- 6:01a company and I was one of the only salespeople in that company
- 6:06and I had a boss. She was a little younger than
- 6:08me, but she was ambitious. She wanted to work her way up.
- 6:14So as we were going through different things, there were
- 6:16some misfilings, there were some sales that got dropped.
- 6:22And it wasn't me that did it, it was her who did it.
- 6:27But she was the one who met with the Home Office and she blamed
- 6:31it on me. And when I found out about this,
- 6:34I confronted her and I was saved at the time.
- 6:40And I confronted her and I wanted to know why.
- 6:42And she admitted that she panicked.
- 6:46And then she threw me under the bus because it was convenient.
- 6:49She admitted that. So I had to do a lot of praying
- 6:55because at that particular time, my heart went cold.
- 6:58It went very cold. And I said I will no longer go
- 7:01above and beyond again. I'll only do the bare minimum.
- 7:04I won't even speak to her anymore.
- 7:07I'll just come in, go in my office and do what I'm supposed
- 7:10to do. And at that particular time, I
- 7:13had a friend that I was in very close contact with and we would
- 7:16get together from time to time and get into the word of God.
- 7:18And he called me out on that. He said, brother, you are wrong.
- 7:25You are wrong and God is not going to do anything to move you
- 7:30out of that situation until your heart changes hit me right
- 7:35between the eyes. So I had to repent.
- 7:39So Paul is saying here, look, it doesn't matter whether they're
- 7:42believing or unbelieving. You are to honor them.
- 7:46That means respect them. You're to respect your bosses or
- 7:51your owners or your masters. You respect them.
- 7:53Why? So that the name of God and his
- 7:56doctrine is not blasphemy. I was not being a very good
- 8:00witness for Christ. Why would this woman ever even
- 8:05consider being a Christian or giving her life to Christ if
- 8:10this is how a Christian acts? I was called on that.
- 8:16So Paul is saying to you just like he's saying to me, we got
- 8:21to be a witness no matter what situation we're in.
- 8:24We got to be a witness for Christ.
- 8:26We have to be an example of testimony so that the name of
- 8:31God is not blasphemed, so that the doctrine of God, the gospel
- 8:36is not blasphemed. So then he goes on in verse 2
- 8:41and he says, and those who have believing masters, let them not
- 8:44despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them
- 8:48because those who are being benefited are believers and
- 8:52beloved. You know, sometimes we can think
- 8:54that if we're, if we're working for somebody who's a Christian,
- 9:00you know, we think that we can slide a little bit, then we can
- 9:03get some privileges that other people can't get.
- 9:06You know, I can push things a little further to the to the
- 9:08line. You know, I can push the
- 9:10envelope a little further because hey, he's a Christian
- 9:12just like me. You know, he ain't going to tell
- 9:14on me or he's not going to come down hard on me or he's not
- 9:17going to hold me accountable. Paula said no, no, we should
- 9:23honor them and respect them as well.
- 9:25In fact even more so, we should serve them even more because
- 9:30they benefit. They benefit from our service of
- 9:34them and they are brothers or sisters in the faith.
- 9:40Why we wouldn't want to do anything that would bring or put
- 9:43them in a position that they would have to make a tough
- 9:46decision. Why put them in that position?
- 9:50Why put them in a position where they may have to consider firing
- 9:53you because you come in late all the time or because you're doing
- 9:57things that you shouldn't be doing on company time, or
- 10:00because you're disrespecting them or because your work is
- 10:05half of what it could be? That's not a good testimony and
- 10:11you're believing boss doesn't benefit.
- 10:14So Paul deals with that right from the beginning and then he
- 10:17goes into verse 3 and he says if anyone teaches otherwise and
- 10:21does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our
- 10:25Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with
- 10:29godliness, in other words of the doctrine which conforms with
- 10:33godliness or the doctrine that teaches godliness.
- 10:36He is proud verse 4, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with
- 10:41disputes and arguments over words from which come envy,
- 10:47strife, revelings, evil suspicions, useless wranglings
- 10:52of men, of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who
- 10:57suppose that godliness is a means of gain.
- 11:00Paul says from such, withdraw yourself.
- 11:03So he says if anyone teaches otherwise, that means if anyone
- 11:07teaches against the gospel, against the doctrine, against
- 11:11the words of Jesus Christ, if anyone teaches against that, as
- 11:15Christians we should not ever put ourselves in a position to
- 11:19even listen to or to be persuaded by any doctrine or any
- 11:24word that is contrary to the word of Jesus Christ, should not
- 11:29even put ourselves in that position.
- 11:31But Paul says if anyone teaches that way, you know, they're not
- 11:34consenting to hold some words. So we shouldn't listen to them
- 11:37if they're not consenting to hold some words, which are the
- 11:40words of Jesus Christ and the things that he teaches and to
- 11:43the doctrine which conforms with godliness.
- 11:46We know what godliness is. Anything that someone would
- 11:49teach that's contrary to godliness or God likeness should
- 11:54not even be listening to that. We should not even be listening
- 11:58at all. He says that.
- 12:00Now this is the character of a person that does that.
- 12:03Verse 4, He's proud. This is a person that's puffed
- 12:06up with pride. They're teaching because they
- 12:09want to just spell out their knowledge.
- 12:11I'm deep, I'm deep. Listen, how deep this is, I'm
- 12:15going to take another vantage point.
- 12:17Look at this from another vantage point.
- 12:20No, we only need to see it from 1 vantage point.
- 12:22That's from the point of Jesus Christ.
- 12:25So they start to talk about all these deep words and they get
- 12:27obsessed. And this is a person who gets
- 12:29obsessed over disputes. And really, when you study it
- 12:33out, it's, it's really like a, a very sick desire to argue, a
- 12:40very morbid desire to get into arguments.
- 12:43And this is a person who's spilling out false doctrine, but
- 12:47then they want to argue about it.
- 12:50They want to create division about it.
- 12:53They want to dispute with you about it.
- 12:56You're sharing the word of God. They're talking about their
- 12:59doctrine and trying to argue, to try to justify it.
- 13:02And Paul says it's an obsession, it's a evil desire.
- 13:06It's a sick desire to dispute and argue over words, over words
- 13:12that they take in A twist to mean what it is that they want
- 13:16the word to say. Paul said be careful with that.
- 13:20Now, from this, from someone who teaches that the only things
- 13:24that come out of that, the result of that kind of teaching
- 13:27is what follows envy, strife, revelings, which is basically
- 13:34abusive language, evil suspicions or evil surmisings,
- 13:42useless wrangling. That's constant friction,
- 13:45constant friction. People constantly opposing you,
- 13:49constantly opposing you. You're teaching the gospel and
- 13:52they're constantly opposing it with their own thoughts, their
- 13:55own ways, their own words, their own theories, he said.
- 14:01These are men of corrupt minds. That means their minds are
- 14:04corrupt. They're defiled corrupt minds
- 14:08and destitute of the truth, robbed of the truth.
- 14:11They're robbed of the truth because they've abandoned the
- 14:13truth for so long. So they're robbed of the truth.
- 14:19Who suppose that godliness is a means of gain?
- 14:25This is nothing more than the bad teaching of prosperity
- 14:29gospel, nothing more than that. To see godliness as a means of
- 14:36gain. It's a way to get money for
- 14:38them. It's not about building up
- 14:40lives. It's not about building people
- 14:42up spiritually. It's not about for them.
- 14:44It's not about edifying people or bringing in souls.
- 14:48It's not about that for them. It's about let's teach this
- 14:51prosperity message because it entices people and they make
- 14:56money from it and they're using the gospel as a means, a means
- 15:03of gain. That is not what the gospel.
- 15:07That's a covetous attitude. It's a covetous attitude.
- 15:11And then he says here in verse 6, now godliness with
- 15:15contentment is great gain. And I just want to talk about
- 15:19contentment just for a second. Contentment is basically an
- 15:22inner sufficiency that keeps us at peace despite outward
- 15:28circumstances. Some people can only be content
- 15:32if they have enough money. Some people can only be content
- 15:34if they're with the person that they want to be with.
- 15:36Some people can only be content if the circumstances are in
- 15:39their favor. That's the only way they can be
- 15:41content. Paul is saying contentment is an
- 15:45inner sufficiency, not based on anything outside of me.
- 15:49It's not based on my bank account.
- 15:51It's not based on the size of my house.
- 15:53It's not based on me driving the car I want to drive.
- 15:56It's not based on me being with this person.
- 15:59Not because I like what's inside of them, because I like the way
- 16:02they look on the outside. Paul is saying that's not what
- 16:05contentment is. Godliness in the heart is true
- 16:10contentment. Wealth can't even purchase that
- 16:13wealth. Can't purchase that kind of
- 16:14contentment wealth can't purchase it no matter how much
- 16:19money you get, you still won't ever achieve contentment because
- 16:24you're going to always want more.
- 16:28These who depend on your wealth and your riches for peace and
- 16:32contentment will never be satisfied, will never be
- 16:36satisfied. But Job looked at it from a
- 16:39different way back in Job chapter 1 and verse 21, he had a
- 16:43very healthy perspective of contentment and money.
- 16:48He says, listen, naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked
- 16:53I shall return there in the Ecclesiastes 5 and 15, Solomon
- 16:59said as he came from his mother's womb, naked shall he
- 17:02return to go as he came, and he shall take nothing from his
- 17:07labor which he may carry away in his hand.
- 17:13So contentment has got to be our godliness, because it's our
- 17:17godliness that goes beyond this world.
- 17:22Riches only go as far as this world goes.
- 17:24But once we leave this world, riches does us no more good.
- 17:28It only goes as far as this world goes.
- 17:30And Paul says from such people, people who have that attitude,
- 17:34people who preach those things, he said withdraw yourself.
- 17:38And he said godliness with contentment is great game for
- 17:41seven. We brought nothing into this
- 17:43world and it is certain we will carry nothing out of it.
- 17:47And having now this is what Paul is saying is that shows
- 17:51contentment. He says having food and clothing
- 17:55with fees, we shall be content having food and clothing.
- 17:59Those are the particulars. Those are the necessary things
- 18:03that we have. Even Jesus himself said, look,
- 18:06you know foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but
- 18:09the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his own head.
- 18:13He has nowhere to lay his own head.
- 18:14Matthew 633 said, But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his
- 18:18righteousness, and these things, these necessary things will be
- 18:22added to you. Contentment is being satisfied
- 18:26with the situation ordained by God.
- 18:30So then we go into verse 9, which begins to talk about two
- 18:34types of people as it relates to wealth, Two types of people.
- 18:39The first one is those who desire to be rich.
- 18:43Now these are people here in the church.
- 18:45We're talking about the church. We're not talking about the
- 18:47world. The first group of people that
- 18:49he's talking about are those who desire to be rich.
- 18:53And he says, so those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,
- 18:57in a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which
- 19:02drown men in destruction and perdition.
- 19:06That's a very interesting picture when you think about
- 19:09that, being a pitcher person. It says that those who desire to
- 19:13be rich, they fall into temptation and a snare.
- 19:17And we know that those things all have to do with what's going
- 19:20on the inside of us. And the snare are pitfalls that
- 19:23we fall into. And it says and have fallen to
- 19:25many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction.
- 19:30Now it's the picture of a man being taken down underwater,
- 19:36being taken down and held down, weighted down by destruction by
- 19:42their lusts and by perdition by their lusts.
- 19:46They got so many things that they're lusting for.
- 19:48It's like a weight on them because they can never attain it
- 19:51all. So it's just constant, constant
- 19:54worrying and constant striving for something that they can
- 19:58never really achieve and be satisfied with.
- 20:00And it's like a weight that takes them down and holds them
- 20:03and drowns them in it. And then it says here in verse
- 20:0710. And this is a very well used
- 20:09scripture, but probably one of the most quoted scriptures.
- 20:15That we have in the New Testament, it says for the love
- 20:18of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
- 20:22Now, money is not evil. God created money, Money is not
- 20:28evil, he said. The love of it is what's evil.
- 20:33Because once we develop a love for money, it becomes an idol
- 20:38and we put it in a position that's even higher than we put
- 20:43God, and we begin to do all the kind of things in order to
- 20:47obtain money because of our love for money.
- 20:51And it said it is not the root of all kinds of evil.
- 20:55The Bible says it is a root of all kinds of evil.
- 20:59There are many different paths and ways to end up on an evil
- 21:03path. Money is just one of them, money
- 21:06is just one of them. But it is indeed a way to end up
- 21:09on an evil path. The love of money for which some
- 21:13have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced
- 21:18themselves through with many sorrows, The love of money.
- 21:24And what is so sad about that? Because the love of money leads
- 21:28men into many, many ways of air, many ways of air, the desire of
- 21:34riches are traps. It leads us into bondages and it
- 21:39causes the word of God to become unfruitful.
- 21:43It being choked out the cares of this world and the deceitfulness
- 21:46of riches and the desires of other things.
- 21:49That's the word speaks about in Mark chapter 4, verse 18, which
- 21:53in the parable, the sober, it chokes out the truth of the word
- 21:57and instead people focus on the cares of this world and the
- 22:01deceitfulness of riches and riches are deceitful and the
- 22:05desire for other things. These foolish and harmful lusts
- 22:09will take us down. And it has destroyed many of
- 22:12people. It's the love of money that has
- 22:14destroyed marriages. It's destroyed companies, it's
- 22:17destroyed relationships. It destroys families.
- 22:22Someone gets a trust or something and and you know,
- 22:25someone passes and when it's time to go read the will, Oh my
- 22:28goodness, people begin. I mean, they stop speaking
- 22:33because they got more than they got.
- 22:37It breaks up families. People stop speaking for years
- 22:41over money and the bad thing about it and I've watched this
- 22:47happen before when it says here for some have strayed from the
- 22:51faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with
- 22:56many sorrows. There's so many people that I've
- 23:01seen I've witnessed myself that has a gift given by God to
- 23:08either sing. There are great musicians or
- 23:13very gifted communicators of the word of God, and they may start
- 23:18out using that gift to serve the Lord.
- 23:23They start out using that gift to serve the Lord.
- 23:26But as the love of money creeps into their hearts, because
- 23:30somebody said to them, you could be making so much more money.
- 23:34You could be driving so much of A better car.
- 23:36You could be living in such a bigger house, You could be
- 23:39having so many more things at your disposure, and they begin
- 23:45to leave the faith and begin to sing for the world.
- 23:51And I've watched people as their lives crumble as a result of
- 23:55that. This has been another
- 23:58encouraging edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:02Pastor Louis Harrell has shared some good reminders for us to
- 24:05learn and walk in today as he's teaching through the books of
- 24:09First and Second Timothy. There are useful practices and
- 24:14advice that the apostle Paul offers to Timothy in these books
- 24:18from a fellow pastor, Paul imparts some wisdom to Timothy
- 24:22about solid leadership and what some of the criteria should be
- 24:27for leadership. There are specific passages
- 24:30directed toward men and women, respectively, and All in all,
- 24:34there's much to gain in coming to an awareness of God's heart
- 24:37for each person and God's purposes for each one.
- 24:42We're happy that you've taken the time today to listen.
