- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites, the podcast presented by BET three
- 0:12Speaker 1: sixty five. We are part of the Action Network. I
- 0:15Speaker 1: am Chad Norman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We are so close. People joining me on the show
- 0:26Speaker 1: is my co host, my companion, my capadre, my BFF,
- 0:30Speaker 1: professional better Assignmon Hunter and O Simon.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Hello, Chad. Good to be back. I mean, my brother
- 0:37Speaker 2: off the top. We got to talk about everyone's talking about, right.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I don't care if you're left, If you're right. NCAA
- 0:43Speaker 2: football is back, Chad, And I don't.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Know if that was something you missed.
- 0:49Speaker 2: But growing up to me, I mean there's Madden and people,
- 0:53Speaker 2: there's NCAA people. I'm a little bit of both, honestly,
- 0:57Speaker 2: but I'm definitely a guy who I spent way too
- 1:00Speaker 2: much I'm playing that game.
- 1:01Speaker 3: So I don't know if you if that missed you.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But I had a couple of fans reach out to
- 1:04Speaker 2: ask us about if I could ask you if you
- 1:06Speaker 2: played it, and I told.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Them I don't think Chad made the window.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I think you just missed the window because I feel
- 1:13Speaker 2: like you were like thirty five ish thirty two ish
- 1:15Speaker 2: when it came out.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So my window, my window, And I can't even remember
- 1:20Speaker 1: the name of the game. Now, is that old I am?
- 1:23Speaker 1: It was that NHL video game?
- 1:27Speaker 3: What game?
- 1:28Speaker 1: The NHL video.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Oh yes, yes, yes, and it's.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Not Ethronic again again, I'm so old. I'm aging myself.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:38Speaker 1: When the movie was that movie with John Favreau and
- 1:43Speaker 1: Vince Fawn Swing Nurse came out, Yeah, and like one
- 1:46Speaker 1: night they were all hanging out in their apartment playing
- 1:49Speaker 1: that video game Nintendo. That was like every night for
- 1:54Speaker 1: me and my guys. Yeah, in college before he went out,
- 1:57Speaker 1: it was putting that gime.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I was gonna say, My mine for that for college
- 2:01Speaker 2: was FIFA, like FIFA if you were drinking. It was
- 2:04Speaker 2: just a perfect thing of you know, if you lose
- 2:06Speaker 2: your ginger beer and it was kind of thing where
- 2:08Speaker 2: it's like that was just in the dorms. That's what
- 2:10Speaker 2: people played for my age. But yeah, that AHL is
- 2:12Speaker 2: definitely a classic.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I will say that this new NCAA game came out
- 2:20Speaker 1: and my kid who wanted the new PS five console
- 2:25Speaker 1: or whatever, Yeah, he decided that he wanted to spend
- 2:30Speaker 1: his own money on it because we weren't going to
- 2:32Speaker 1: buy it for him because he wanted to play with
- 2:34Speaker 1: all his friends, so he made the choice to spend
- 2:38Speaker 1: basically his life savings in this video game console so
- 2:42Speaker 1: he could play the new Matten College football game.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Now I'm with him. I had that ard reality.
- 2:47Speaker 2: It's a weird thing chat where if you have an
- 2:48Speaker 2: order console, it doesn't work on it. So I have
- 2:51Speaker 2: the original Xbox One, which was great for me for
- 2:53Speaker 2: ten years, and I go to download the game. They're
- 2:55Speaker 2: just like, nope, go spend more money, go buy the
- 2:57Speaker 2: newest Xbox And like, damn, they know that.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'll do it too, So I win, did it.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But they hooked you, brother, hooked you. They also hooked
- 3:04Speaker 1: my seventeen year old son. We are now two weeks
- 3:08Speaker 1: away from the start of our annual NFL Division.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Mayors Report Today, Chad or yesterday they reported yesterday.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I mean, we're here, we are so here and the world.
- 3:22Speaker 1: There's a lot of news going on right now. Right
- 3:26Speaker 1: now we are talking about the NFL and we are
- 3:29Speaker 1: weeks away from our division preview episodes. To get those
- 3:33Speaker 1: juices flown a little bit, we have one of our
- 3:36Speaker 1: favorite summer episodes. This is when Simon and I rank
- 3:38Speaker 1: our top ten NFL QBS with the help of our
- 3:42Speaker 1: very special guest friend of the show, og at the
- 3:45Speaker 1: fantasy football community. You can find him at Sharp Football Analysis,
- 3:50Speaker 1: at Lord Reeves, on Twitter, many other places where the
- 3:53Speaker 1: NFL is intelligently discussed. Exception being today, Welcome to the show,
- 4:01Speaker 1: rich Rebard. What's up, brother?
- 4:04Speaker 4: What's going on? Guys? I'm glad to be back. Even
- 4:07Speaker 4: after last year of having Deshaun Watson on my list,
- 4:09Speaker 4: I was glad I was invited back. I don't know
- 4:11Speaker 4: where Deshaun Watson is going to be on anyone's list today,
- 4:14Speaker 4: but I'm glad that I was allowed to come back
- 4:16Speaker 4: after that. Well.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Look, one of us had Justin Fields on his list, so.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Even worse, two people forgot Stafford.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yes, and that I can guarantee we're not making the
- 4:26Speaker 1: same mistake again.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I'm so excited to do this list. Earlier today, in
- 4:32Speaker 1: a separate call with Matt Mitchell one of my eighty
- 4:34Speaker 1: five calls with Matt Mitchell today that had nothing to
- 4:37Speaker 1: do with the podcast, I told him I had blocked
- 4:39Speaker 1: out some time and even on our return from vacation
- 4:44Speaker 1: late Saturday night yesterday, I started thinking about my list
- 4:48Speaker 1: and then I had blocked out time today to do
- 4:51Speaker 1: more research, and he was ripping me. He's like, you
- 4:54Speaker 1: got Dave greg on that list, Like he was so
- 4:57Speaker 1: antagonistic about what my list is going to be. So
- 5:01Speaker 1: when I saw your list, which I've seen, I was
- 5:02Speaker 1: so proud that, like I wasn't too far off, but
- 5:05Speaker 1: we got we got some differences, and we'll get to
- 5:07Speaker 1: yours in mind, and then we'll get to Riches, who
- 5:09Speaker 1: is going to be the arbiter of good taste and sensibility.

- 6:08Speaker 1: you and I are going to go ten to one,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and yeah, I want you to start first. I'm going
- 6:13Speaker 1: to make the list. I want you to define your
- 6:15Speaker 1: criteria because I want you to explain how you're thinking
- 6:19Speaker 1: about the rankings in this particular ten to one list,
- 6:25Speaker 1: because I do think that you and I will think
- 6:27Speaker 1: about it differently, and yet we still ended up with
- 6:29Speaker 1: pretty much the same people on the list.
- 6:31Speaker 3: You start, Yeah, I'm.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Trying to adjust a little bit because I did take
- 6:36Speaker 2: too much heat for last year. I agreed with a
- 6:38Speaker 2: lot of the hate I was getting. It was mainly
- 6:39Speaker 2: from Cowboys fans. I was just too low on DAK.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I don't think I had Dak in my top ten
- 6:44Speaker 2: last year. My view was that I was just burned
- 6:47Speaker 2: out on DAK. I was just like I know how
- 6:48Speaker 2: great is gonna be doing the regular season. I know
- 6:51Speaker 2: when I need him in the playoffs, he's not going
- 6:52Speaker 2: to show up for me. I'm just I was just
- 6:54Speaker 2: so sick of the hype. But last year, I mean,
- 6:57Speaker 2: Dak was to me the best court back in the NFC.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I can't leave him off the list again this year.
- 7:03Speaker 2: So that for my criteria, I'm basically looking at who
- 7:06Speaker 2: do I trust her in the regular season, not just
- 7:08Speaker 2: the playoffs, to if they throw a pick six, if
- 7:11Speaker 2: they're behind in a game, who do I still have
- 7:14Speaker 2: faith and they'll be able to come back and win
- 7:15Speaker 2: those games?
- 7:16Speaker 3: Right?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Because there's plenty of guys who can put up great numbers, right.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I mean, I'll tell you right now, Chad I left
- 7:20Speaker 2: off was too too puts off great numbers. He's deadly accurate.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I do not have faith at all that when things
- 7:26Speaker 2: are going wrong that two is going to pull his
- 7:27Speaker 2: team out of those things. So I did leave two
- 7:29Speaker 2: off my top ten list. So let's start number ten. Chad,
- 7:32Speaker 2: he made it. I got to give it to him
- 7:33Speaker 2: after last year and what he did. I was a
- 7:36Speaker 2: hater coming to the season, but brock Perdy number ten,
- 7:39Speaker 2: I really got to give that kid respect. Number nine
- 7:41Speaker 2: is not going to shock people and means the darling
- 7:43Speaker 2: of the off season, Chad CJ. Stroud. We're gonna talk
- 7:46Speaker 2: about him obviously. Number eight. I can't believe it.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Golf worked his way in. I mean, we can't deny it.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Right he was.
- 7:53Speaker 2: He's one of the best quarterbacks the NFC last year
- 7:55Speaker 2: and it's been consistent, right every year he's gotten better
- 7:58Speaker 2: since he's gotten Detroit.
- 7:59Speaker 3: So number eight golf.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Number seven hurts, and that's that's gonna be a controversial pick.
- 8:04Speaker 2: People don't believe in him. I'll tell tell you why.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Why do when we get into it. Number six right
- 8:10Speaker 2: above hurts.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I'm o, Dak. It's just he was incredible last year.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Like as much as of a failure he is in
- 8:17Speaker 2: the playoffs, you can't deny the talent and how smart
- 8:20Speaker 2: he is. And even games that they weren't, you know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: weren't weren't his best games. He kept his team in him.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So respected Dak. From last year, it was just he
- 8:27Speaker 2: was incredible. Number five, my highest graded quarterback in NFC Stafford.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I mean we talked last year he was just so disrespected.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You listen to any radio show they're pounding his under
- 8:37Speaker 2: six and a half the win total of that team.
- 8:39Speaker 2: People left the Rams were dead. I mean, look at
- 8:42Speaker 2: that turnaround, Like it's just it's just incredible how good
- 8:44Speaker 2: he is when he can't stay healthy. So number five Stafford,
- 8:47Speaker 2: the rest is all AFC quarterbacks from EA Chad. Number
- 8:50Speaker 2: four the MVP Lamar. He would be hiring this list
- 8:53Speaker 2: if he just doesn't stop burning us in the playoffs.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But I can't let it go. Like he just the
- 8:58Speaker 2: guys above him here, I have more especial when it
- 9:00Speaker 2: comes to January and February. Number three, Joe Burrow speaks
- 9:05Speaker 2: for himself. He just cool, cool, cool Joe. Like he
- 9:08Speaker 2: doesn't get more cool, cold blooder than Joe Burrow. Number
- 9:11Speaker 2: two is still Josh Allen. To me, if Patrick Mahomes
- 9:14Speaker 2: didn't exist, I think we were talking about him having
- 9:16Speaker 2: one or two rings at this point.
- 9:18Speaker 3: It's just it's.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Unfortunately for Josh Allen, he's born into an era of Mahomes,
- 9:22Speaker 2: which we talk all the time about the great ones
- 9:24Speaker 2: they get left in these kind of periods where I
- 9:26Speaker 2: still think he projects out to be a Hall of Famer.
- 9:28Speaker 2: It's like, will ever get over that hump? Chat, So
- 9:30Speaker 2: number two, Josh Allen number one? How do you not
- 9:34Speaker 2: put the best player in all football? Maybe we've ever
- 9:37Speaker 2: seen at number one. I think he's been number one
- 9:39Speaker 2: for both of us ever since we've done these lists.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Maybe one yard Brooke and did put Allen, but I
- 9:44Speaker 2: just could see it being Mahomes over these last couple
- 9:48Speaker 2: of years.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Being the guy. So not no shock at all having
- 9:50Speaker 3: him at number one.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Chad, here's what's so interesting. You and I I think
- 9:55Speaker 1: both of us had Allen number one either.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I think two years ago it was after the Joe
- 10:01Speaker 3: Burrow beat.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It was after Joe Burrow and like we were down
- 10:04Speaker 1: on my homes and you have my body was when
- 10:08Speaker 1: it was up on Josh Allen, like this year he's
- 10:11Speaker 1: going to get over the hump. And then Mahomes did
- 10:13Speaker 1: Mahomes things, and he's won two Super Bowls since then.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I like to think that we inspired that greatness because
- 10:20Speaker 1: he was so upset that neither of us had him
- 10:24Speaker 1: as our number one overall quarterback that he went on
- 10:29Speaker 1: to win back to back Super Bowls. One hundred percent. Also,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I remember, as we get to my list, you and
- 10:37Speaker 1: I had very specific feelings about Josh Allen and Joe Burrow,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and I think Rich was the tiebreaker on that, and
- 10:46Speaker 1: so I'm excited for him to give us our list,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and he will in a minute. I'm going to go
- 10:50Speaker 1: through mine because they are so similar. And you mentioned
- 10:56Speaker 1: right off the top what you liked about out these
- 11:01Speaker 1: quarterbacks and why you had them on the list. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: made two notes about what I'm thinking about when it
- 11:08Speaker 1: comes to how I'm defining my ten top ten quarterbacks
- 11:13Speaker 1: in the NFL, And it is, honest to god, I
- 11:17Speaker 1: didn't even really look at stats for this. And I
- 11:21Speaker 1: don't want to insult Rich because I know he does
- 11:23Speaker 1: a lot of thoughtful things when it comes to numbers
- 11:25Speaker 1: and rankings and things like that. I only thought about
- 11:28Speaker 1: two things. What quarterback am I most afraid of? If
- 11:35Speaker 1: I have bet against them and they have the ball
- 11:40Speaker 1: and they need to score to win the game and
- 11:44Speaker 1: for me to lose my bet, That's number one, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: that is definitely number one. It's not like two sides
- 11:51Speaker 1: of the same coin. That is number one. Number two
- 11:55Speaker 1: is who do I trust most to win me a
- 11:59Speaker 1: bet if they have the ball last and I need
- 12:01Speaker 1: them to score to cover. So it's basically, who am
- 12:05Speaker 1: I most afraid to bet against? Who am I most
- 12:08Speaker 1: excited to confident to bet on. That's it, that's the ballgame.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And because I live in fear, the first one is
- 12:17Speaker 1: who am I most afraid to bet against? Number ten?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Dak Prescott. I thought about Tua, but to me, he's
- 12:28Speaker 1: a system quarterback, and like, there's so many factors that
- 12:32Speaker 1: go into whether or not he's going to be successful,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And I kind of feel
- 12:39Speaker 1: the same way about that, in that he has so
- 12:42Speaker 1: many ways in which he grows up big numbers because
- 12:47Speaker 1: of the system he's in and because of the way
- 12:49Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy is calling plays. But I am not afraid
- 12:53Speaker 1: of Dak at the end of a game, Like I
- 12:56Speaker 1: think there are too many ways in which he loses
- 12:59Speaker 1: you a game and not enough ways in which he
- 13:01Speaker 1: wins me a game to have him be higher. He's
- 13:04Speaker 1: in the top ten, but he's not higher than that
- 13:07Speaker 1: for me, number nine, And I was actually surprised I
- 13:10Speaker 1: had him this low. But Rock Purty, so you and
- 13:15Speaker 1: I are close. On Purty. You have him at ten,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I have him at nine. Brock Purty, He's a gamer
- 13:21Speaker 1: to me, and like, no matter what he's done earlier
- 13:23Speaker 1: in the game. I feel like at the end of
- 13:26Speaker 1: the game he's going to find ways to win. We
- 13:27Speaker 1: saw it against the Lions. You know, he played so
- 13:30Speaker 1: well against the Chiefs that game. Losing that game is
- 13:33Speaker 1: not brock Perty's fault. That is a win by Patrick
- 13:36Speaker 1: Mahomes and some bad coaching calls by Kyle Shanahan. Rock
- 13:39Speaker 1: Purty number nine again, like you, I have Jared Goff
- 13:44Speaker 1: at eight. I was shocked when I went through my
- 13:47Speaker 1: list that I put Jared Goff in. Yeah, at eight,
- 13:51Speaker 1: But then you think about it, like, think about all
- 13:53Speaker 1: the stats we had last year. One of the best
- 13:55Speaker 1: quarterbacks against the spread in the NFL, one of the
- 13:59Speaker 1: best quotquarterbacks against the spread at home, one of the
- 14:02Speaker 1: best quarterbacks against the spread indoors. The guy just covers,
- 14:06Speaker 1: the guy covers as a favorite, the guy covers as
- 14:09Speaker 1: a dog. So Jared Goff makes the list seven. You
- 14:14Speaker 1: had Justin Hurtz. I did not have him on my list.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I had Justin Herbert. I'm curious to know why you
- 14:22Speaker 1: didn't have Justin Herbert on your list.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I mean again, I was gonna say it for it.
- 14:26Speaker 2: When a deep dive hurts But basically, well, would you
- 14:30Speaker 2: say the Chiefs are the best defense the last five years?
- 14:33Speaker 3: In your opinion?
- 14:33Speaker 2: Are the Chiefs? Have they been the best with SPACs
- 14:36Speaker 2: most completely the last five years?
- 14:38Speaker 1: It's hard to argue against that because of what he's
- 14:41Speaker 1: done strategically and how many Super Bowls they won, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: they've won because of the defense.
- 14:45Speaker 2: So if you had a Bears quarterback that made it
- 14:48Speaker 2: to a Super Bowl that passed forward three undred yards
- 14:50Speaker 2: against that Chiefs defense and had four total touchdowns, would
- 14:53Speaker 2: you view that quarterback as a top ten quarterback? So
- 14:58Speaker 2: that's what hurts it, and that's why I couldn't put
- 15:00Speaker 2: Herbert on this list. It's like he's got zero playoff
- 15:03Speaker 2: wins and he's inconsistent.
- 15:05Speaker 3: That's my issue.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It's like the talent's all there, he's got the coach finally,
- 15:09Speaker 2: So next year, could I have him back in this
- 15:11Speaker 2: top ten?
- 15:12Speaker 3: No doubt. I mean Herbert, he's got the talent.
- 15:14Speaker 2: His issue is he's inconsistent, and even in those games
- 15:17Speaker 2: that you know, we gave him a lot of leadway
- 15:20Speaker 2: last year because of the coaching. But it's like there's
- 15:22Speaker 2: plenty of games you could have put on Herbert that
- 15:24Speaker 2: He's just didn't live up to the moment, right he
- 15:25Speaker 2: had the ball in the final two minutes. He didn't
- 15:27Speaker 2: live up to the expectations. So that was just my
- 15:30Speaker 2: view of it. It's like Hurts, he's gotting too much
- 15:32Speaker 2: flak from last year again, Eagles still won eleven games
- 15:34Speaker 2: in a season. From hell, I think it's just the
- 15:36Speaker 2: way football is, right. It's like I can see why
- 15:39Speaker 2: you did it. Like I love watching Herbert on tape,
- 15:41Speaker 2: I can't tell you that much if I'm going to
- 15:42Speaker 2: watch him or Hurts. It's more appeasing to my eyes
- 15:44Speaker 2: to watch Herbert. But as a quarterback, I just feel
- 15:46Speaker 2: like Hurts has done more than Herbert has.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Six.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I have Lamar. You have Lamar at four. I have
- 15:53Speaker 1: him at six for the same reasons you have him
- 15:54Speaker 1: at four. I don't trust him. I don't think you know.
- 15:58Speaker 1: It's like he needs to be winning in order for.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Him as a dog.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Though me and chat Auto bet every time, We've never
- 16:04Speaker 2: not bet him as a dog.
- 16:05Speaker 3: But I'm with you. It's just the trust.
- 16:07Speaker 1: It's a trusting I got C. J. Stroud at five.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Maybe I'm over heeping.
- 16:13Speaker 3: You're drinking the kool aid after a rookie year.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I might be drinking the kool aid. I'm very curious.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I thought I'm a nine, but that I get it.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I know Rich is Rich is.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Being very patient. I got Stafford at four. I might
- 16:24Speaker 1: be over correcting because of the because we left him
- 16:28Speaker 1: off last year, and I feel like in one of
- 16:31Speaker 1: the posit it might have been back tr gaved back
- 16:34Speaker 1: ti Chris Long. Someone mentioned that they just look at
- 16:38Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford, and players look at Matthew Stafford as the
- 16:41Speaker 1: most talented quarterback in the NFL other than c. J.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Stroud. He was talking, They're asking him who he tries
- 16:46Speaker 3: a repscated game after, and you saying Stafford.
- 16:49Speaker 1: That's it. Then I got Alan, I got Joe Burrow,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I got Allan at three, Burrow at two. When you
- 16:56Speaker 1: you and I have gone through this before. I had
- 16:59Speaker 1: Burrow before Alan a couple of years ago. He's beaten
- 17:02Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. Bottom line, he's on the field the angles
- 17:06Speaker 1: beating Patrick Mahomes. Josh Allen hasn't. And then I got
- 17:09Speaker 1: number one Patrick Mahomes. All Right, we've made Rich wait
- 17:14Speaker 1: long enough. Rich go from UH ten down to one.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Gus give us your logic and what went into your
- 17:25Speaker 1: list and then give us your list?
- 17:28Speaker 4: All right, Yeah, I like that. I come about this
- 17:30Speaker 4: a little bit differently than you, guys. I wanted to
- 17:32Speaker 4: stay uniform. So my criteria last year was the order
- 17:36Speaker 4: of guys I would take clean slate to win a
- 17:39Speaker 4: Super Bowl on my team this year, so kind of
- 17:41Speaker 4: removing them from like all the surrounding conditions that kind
- 17:44Speaker 4: of go into maybe why we feel negatively or positive
- 17:47Speaker 4: about a player. So with that, I think ten is
- 17:51Speaker 4: pretty nebulous for me. I hemmed in hot of a
- 17:54Speaker 4: few guys, like, you know, do I give Aaron Rodgers
- 17:56Speaker 4: the benefit of the doubt even though he played four
- 17:58Speaker 4: snaps last year? You know, him being four? What do
- 18:00Speaker 4: you want? I settled on still, you know, just Trevor
- 18:03Speaker 4: Lawrence for the pedigree. Uh, you know, I didn't really
- 18:07Speaker 4: include Tua. Golf or Party were not even considerations really
- 18:11Speaker 4: for me, because of the way that they operate inside
- 18:14Speaker 4: of each system. I think when you look at all
- 18:16Speaker 4: three of them, it's easy to tear them apart and say, like,
- 18:20Speaker 4: you know, like Simon, did you even have Justin Herbert
- 18:21Speaker 4: on his list? If you put Justin Herbert in any
- 18:23Speaker 4: three of those situations. I think that those teams are
- 18:27Speaker 4: exponentially better football teams. You know, we don't. We have
- 18:31Speaker 4: a very small sample of brock Purty's career, so I'm
- 18:33Speaker 4: curious to see, like if he just keeps knocking down doors.
- 18:36Speaker 4: But I mean, we only have one hundred and thirty
- 18:38Speaker 4: seven dropbacks that brock Purty has trailed in the second
- 18:41Speaker 4: half of a game for his career. But on those dropbacks,
- 18:43Speaker 4: he's twenty ninth in the NFL completion rate, twenty ninth
- 18:46Speaker 4: and touchdown rate thirty seventh and interception rate and thirty
- 18:50Speaker 4: third and quarterback rating. Like if you put the if
- 18:53Speaker 4: the small sample that the forty nine ers been putting
- 18:55Speaker 4: in a box where they have to pass their way
- 18:57Speaker 4: out of things and things falling brock Party's shoulders, he
- 19:00Speaker 4: hasn't played really good football, so I mean he's he
- 19:03Speaker 4: has such Christine conditions to play in. I mean, you
- 19:05Speaker 4: give Justin Herbert, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and
- 19:08Speaker 4: Brandon Atyuk. I mean, I don't even think it's a question,
- 19:11Speaker 4: like what.
- 19:12Speaker 3: If I give him Austin Eckler, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Yeah, and they didn't play the last years. But they
- 19:17Speaker 4: didn't play the last years. I mean I know he.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Had he had him, he had him for a couple
- 19:21Speaker 3: of years. There, I get what you're saying. That's fair.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean we look at Herbert Splits when all
- 19:25Speaker 4: of those guys have played and when they've been off
- 19:27Speaker 4: the field. I mean he's been incredible, yeah, he I
- 19:30Speaker 4: mean he's been absolutely incredible.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But but we're talking about Trevor.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Lawrence just for the pedigree factor. But I'm pretty open
- 19:35Speaker 4: I actually was pretty close to Jordan Love being kind
- 19:37Speaker 4: of on there, but just the sample size issue, because
- 19:39Speaker 4: I think from a talent perspective, Jordan Love has everything
- 19:42Speaker 4: like I would look for the off platform throws, you know,
- 19:45Speaker 4: being able to extend plays, uh, those types of things.
- 19:48Speaker 4: But you only have like a half a year of
- 19:50Speaker 4: him being like right, like really good.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So interesting about then I've got Zach Well hold on
- 19:56Speaker 1: sech Ridge. What's so interesting here is Trevor Lawrence is
- 20:01Speaker 1: on your list and not on my list and not
- 20:05Speaker 1: on Simon's list. He has been on the past, but
- 20:09Speaker 1: he was so bad in pressure situations last year that
- 20:13Speaker 1: as people who are focused on this only from a
- 20:15Speaker 1: gambling point of view and not from in upside how
- 20:18Speaker 1: you're building a franchise point of view, Like I didn't
- 20:22Speaker 1: even consider him from my top ten. I had Jordan
- 20:25Speaker 1: Love ahead of him. Is sort of the next tier
- 20:29Speaker 1: if I dropped somebody out and Jalen Hurts before Trevor Lawrence.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So it's interesting to me that the way you think
- 20:36Speaker 1: about this, I just I would be curious to know
- 20:39Speaker 1: the numbers that you just described him trailing past attempts.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Where does he rank compared to brock Purty, because that
- 20:45Speaker 1: might give me a different point.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, he's higher in all those categories. I
- 20:49Speaker 4: think just what happened last year was similar to what
- 20:51Speaker 4: happened to you know, kind of Herbert, you know in
- 20:53Speaker 4: the past years. It's like everything deteriorated around him. I
- 20:56Speaker 4: mean last year the Jaguars were eight and three, they
- 20:58Speaker 4: were cruising and then just collapse. Everything fell apart one
- 21:01Speaker 4: in five finish. You are right about the pressure stuff
- 21:05Speaker 4: though with Trevor Lawrence. And we've seen the offensive line
- 21:08Speaker 4: you know last year twenty ninth and pass block win
- 21:11Speaker 4: rate twenty seventh and run block win right at Pro football, folks,
- 21:14Speaker 4: there twenty first and pass block and grade thirty first
- 21:16Speaker 4: to run block and grade. It was a bad unit
- 21:18Speaker 4: and they really only added Mitch Morse like it could
- 21:20Speaker 4: be a potentially bad unit again. There's some moving parts
- 21:23Speaker 4: here with you know, Calvin Ridley and Zay Jones, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 4: swapping chairs for Brian Thomas Junior and Gabe Davis. They
- 21:28Speaker 4: saw got Christian Kirk and Evan ingram As like those
- 21:30Speaker 4: those safety blanket guys. But it couldn't not be good
- 21:34Speaker 4: again this year. Why you can make arguments like the
- 21:35Speaker 4: Colts got better, the Titans got better in that division
- 21:39Speaker 4: as well, so he may maybe doesn't answer to me.
- 21:42Speaker 4: It was like if I was taking, like said, starting
- 21:44Speaker 4: a franchise, like it was just between him and Jordan
- 21:48Speaker 4: love for me, and I still think going back to
- 21:50Speaker 4: that draft, he still got the guy that was had
- 21:53Speaker 4: all this pedigree, and I still believe there's something in
- 21:55Speaker 4: here that we haven't gotten the best of it. Maybe
- 21:56Speaker 4: we just keep waiting for it. Maybe he's my Deshaun
- 21:58Speaker 4: Watson pick of this year. But I have Dak nine
- 22:04Speaker 4: pretty much all the same reasons you guys have. I
- 22:06Speaker 4: have Jalen Hurts eight. Just everything kind of again last year.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I mean it was really good the front half of
- 22:11Speaker 4: the year, and that was in a year where they
- 22:13Speaker 4: lost Shane Stikeen, Brian Johnson had no play calling experience
- 22:16Speaker 4: before last year. The offense was really stale. You look
- 22:19Speaker 4: at their play action rate, their pre snat motion rate,
- 22:21Speaker 4: all that dropped. Losing Shane Stykeen, then Hurts picked up
- 22:24Speaker 4: a knee injury in like Week six, kind of just
- 22:26Speaker 4: was never the same. That offense was never the same.
- 22:28Speaker 4: The offensive line was really healthy still, like Simon said,
- 22:31Speaker 4: I mean, it's really hard to strip away that Super
- 22:34Speaker 4: Bowl performance Jalen Hurts had and like you see the
- 22:36Speaker 4: ceiling right, he was the best player in that game.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Like in you know, it's a bummer that you know
- 22:41Speaker 4: the MVP of the game can't be on the losing team.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Then I have Lamar Jackson at seven. And it's really
- 22:48Speaker 4: comes down to all the same stuff that you guys
- 22:50Speaker 4: laid out. I mean, I don't think that the Ravens
- 22:52Speaker 4: they have to be kicking themselves like they didn't have
- 22:53Speaker 4: a You'll never maybe have as good a look as
- 22:55Speaker 4: you had as last year. You had a down Patrick
- 22:58Speaker 4: Mahomes right, like an immortal Patrick Mahomes in your house.
- 23:02Speaker 4: They score zero points in the second half in your house,
- 23:05Speaker 4: and you can't beat them, right.
- 23:06Speaker 2: And your defense was designed to beat the forty nine ers.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It was like the perfect team now could stop the
- 23:11Speaker 2: forty nine ers. I'll never get over it, yeah, I
- 23:13Speaker 2: mean will never get over it.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I don't think. I don't see how Baltimore fans will
- 23:18Speaker 4: ever have a better look than what they had last year.
- 23:19Speaker 4: And they couldn't cash in. The only quarterback since Lamar
- 23:22Speaker 4: Jackson uh entered the league that has a worse quarterback
- 23:26Speaker 4: rating with more than two playoff starts than him is
- 23:29Speaker 4: Jimmy Garoppolo since he had in the league. I mean,
- 23:32Speaker 4: it's just a six six passing touchdown, six interceptions in
- 23:35Speaker 4: the postseason. You've seen it last year, they didn't. You
- 23:38Speaker 4: can we can definitely look back and say that game
- 23:40Speaker 4: plan was was terrible what Baltimore had last year when
- 23:43Speaker 4: they faced Kansas City. But they put it on Lamars
- 23:45Speaker 4: shoulders again. And you know, it always comes down to
- 23:48Speaker 4: the passing acumen, right, And that's what it always comes
- 23:51Speaker 4: down to. And that's why I have all these all
- 23:53Speaker 4: those guy, all these guys higher than Lamar Jackson. I
- 23:55Speaker 4: have Stafford six. Uh, then I have Stroud five. I
- 23:59Speaker 4: still have just and Herbert four because again I'm removing
- 24:02Speaker 4: him from, you know, from everything that's been surrounding him,
- 24:05Speaker 4: and then I have Burrow, Allen and Mahomes. And to me,
- 24:09Speaker 4: it's still the tiebreaker when you get into the top
- 24:12Speaker 4: of the tiers. And it's what we talked about last year.
- 24:15Speaker 4: And I know, Chad you liked it, but it's still mean.
- 24:16Speaker 4: It's like it's the sack of winded stuff and that's
- 24:19Speaker 4: what separates Burrow. He gives like the gaps from Burrow
- 24:22Speaker 4: to Allen to Mahomes. I mean since Mahomes entered the league.
- 24:27Speaker 4: I mean he's he's only been sacked on twelve point
- 24:29Speaker 4: two percent of his pressures. It's the best rate in
- 24:31Speaker 4: the NFL. It actually goes down in the postseason. He's
- 24:34Speaker 4: only been sacked down eleven point eight percent of his pressures.
- 24:38Speaker 4: And then you look at you know, Joe Burrow, He's
- 24:41Speaker 4: been sacked on twenty six percent of his pressure since
- 24:43Speaker 4: he and THEVELL. It's fortyeth out of forty three qualifying qbs.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Mahomes is one, Josh Allen is three. You say all right. Well,
- 24:50Speaker 4: the Bengals still punch themselves out right, but they go
- 24:52Speaker 4: from eighth in the NFL and points per drive with
- 24:55Speaker 4: Joe Burrow in the game when he doesn't take a
- 24:56Speaker 4: sack all the way down to sixteenth in the NFL
- 24:58Speaker 4: and points per drive when he does take a sack.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Only Russell Wilson has lost more EPA on sacks since
- 25:04Speaker 4: Joe Burrow entered the NFL, and he has actually has
- 25:07Speaker 4: lost more EPA expected points added on sacks then Josh
- 25:11Speaker 4: Allen has lost on fumbles and interceptions since he entered
- 25:14Speaker 4: the NFL. And you know, I dropped all those stats
- 25:17Speaker 4: for you guys last year and told you guys, that's
- 25:19Speaker 4: why I was most concerned about justin Fields even getting
- 25:21Speaker 4: a second contract in the NFL was the sack avoided stuff.
- 25:24Speaker 4: And just you know, you look at the NFL, and
- 25:27Speaker 4: since I've been tracking this data, I've been talking about
- 25:29Speaker 4: this for like multiple years, and you start to see
- 25:31Speaker 4: people start to get on the sack stuff recently. But
- 25:33Speaker 4: I mean, you triple your rate of scoring a touchdown
- 25:36Speaker 4: when you don't take a sack on a drive. You
- 25:37Speaker 4: double your rate on not punting when you you know,
- 25:41Speaker 4: don't take a sack on a drive, and you double
- 25:43Speaker 4: your rate on scoring any points on a drive when
- 25:46Speaker 4: you don't take a sack. So that's what makes the
- 25:48Speaker 4: home such a demon. And that's why I still Burrow
- 25:50Speaker 4: even though he has those those Montanask qualities, like just
- 25:53Speaker 4: the negative plays, I mean those negative plays, and people
- 25:56Speaker 4: don't count sacks as turnovers, but they definitely should be
- 25:58Speaker 4: counting them as turnovers.
- 26:00Speaker 1: So Rich, I don't want to brush your bubble here,
- 26:03Speaker 1: but I've seen Joe Burrow say he's very focused on longevity,
- 26:08Speaker 1: So to me, that means he's getting ready to take
- 26:11Speaker 1: fewer sacks. Simon, I've been on vacation. We haven't had
- 26:16Speaker 1: a chance to catch up since I got back just
- 26:20Speaker 1: days ago since we last spoke. Did you get your
- 26:25Speaker 1: box from Omaha Steaks? Oh?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Boy, did I chat steaks burgers the whole glory. The
- 26:30Speaker 2: family loved them. I had it with my dad and
- 26:32Speaker 2: my mom and yeah, she's not even the biggest meat eater,
- 26:35Speaker 2: even she enjoyed their burgers.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I was really really good food.
- 26:38Speaker 1: This box was so plentiful. I've had it with my family,
- 26:42Speaker 1: loved it. I was also able to share it with
- 26:45Speaker 1: my neighbors who thought I was the most benevolent neighbor
- 26:49Speaker 1: in all of West Herford, Connecticut. If you're listening to

- 28:06Speaker 1: feel like this is where our list are very gear
- 28:09Speaker 1: towards gambling centric ideas versus just starting a franchise ideas.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Neither of us have Trevor Lawrence. Both of us have
- 28:21Speaker 1: Jared Goff. You know, that's like.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Everything he said so true.
- 28:25Speaker 2: If you if you if Ben Johnson, if Ben Johnson
- 28:28Speaker 2: left them, even though they have the best offensive line
- 28:30Speaker 2: in football, I would downgrade him outside.
- 28:32Speaker 3: My top Don. I wouldn't have as much faith as
- 28:34Speaker 3: I do have in this year. It's like it's kind
- 28:36Speaker 3: of a package deal here. So he's right, Like.
- 28:39Speaker 4: From a betting stance, we have to factor in Dan Campbell.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Dan Campbell cares about our money.
- 28:44Speaker 3: It's true.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Dan Campbell is playing, he's coaching to win games, and
- 28:48Speaker 4: as a gambler, that's what you want. That's why they're
- 28:51Speaker 4: so good as dogs. That's why there's that's why there's
- 28:54Speaker 4: they're so fun to bet on, that's why the lines
- 28:55Speaker 4: have been such house money.
- 28:58Speaker 1: The other guy that you talked about that I feel
- 29:02Speaker 1: like I had on my list if I look at
- 29:05Speaker 1: it sort of my next year obviously, I had Jalen
- 29:09Speaker 1: Hurts like just outside and maybe maybe I'm wrong, maybe
- 29:12Speaker 1: I should have him in there. Although I can't think
- 29:15Speaker 1: of anyone I would take out. The only person I
- 29:18Speaker 1: would take out is Dak, honestly. And it's interesting to
- 29:21Speaker 1: me Rich that you have Dak as low as I do.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I have met ten, you have him met nine, but
- 29:28Speaker 1: much higher. Simon has him much higher, Like I didn't
- 29:32Speaker 1: have Hurts. The guys I listed outside of this were Hurts,
- 29:36Speaker 1: Lawrence and Love and so Simon, give me your take
- 29:42Speaker 1: on Jordan Love. Why isn't he on this list? Do
- 29:45Speaker 1: you think he's close to being on this list?
- 29:47Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 29:48Speaker 2: I think it's just a classic case. So it was
- 29:50Speaker 2: the same thing with Party last year. It's like do
- 29:52Speaker 2: it again, Like Party had a great half of a
- 29:55Speaker 2: year when he came in for the forty nine ers
- 29:57Speaker 2: and took them all the way to the NFC Championship game,
- 29:59Speaker 2: which we all can agree that wasn't because of Party, right,
- 30:01Speaker 2: that was the team around him, Jordan Love, that was
- 30:05Speaker 2: all him, Like that him carrying the team and I
- 30:07Speaker 2: think he was what second in touchdowns in the NFC
- 30:10Speaker 2: last year, Like it was all there for him and
- 30:12Speaker 2: he really did do it. But I'm just skeptical because
- 30:14Speaker 2: it's just like, Okay, now the book's out on them. Now,
- 30:17Speaker 2: now they have a full year of tape on him,
- 30:19Speaker 2: can he do it again this upcoming year? Because he
- 30:20Speaker 2: really did only do it for a second half of
- 30:22Speaker 2: the year, And if you go back and look at
- 30:23Speaker 2: the teams he beat, it's not like he beat up
- 30:25Speaker 2: on these great teams, right, it was kind of an
- 30:26Speaker 2: easy path to do what he did.
- 30:28Speaker 3: So my view of Jordan Love is just it's the
- 30:32Speaker 3: media hype.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Right now too, where everyone out there is talking about
- 30:34Speaker 2: him as a top ten guy. Like I really watch
- 30:36Speaker 2: and listen to a lot of shows, they're all in
- 30:38Speaker 2: on Jordan Love, and it's just it's too soon for me.
- 30:40Speaker 3: It's like, let me see him do it again.
- 30:42Speaker 2: If I was him, I would not touch the field
- 30:44Speaker 2: this summer without a new contract.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Though.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Like the whole thing about people being upset that he's
- 30:48Speaker 2: trying to hold out, it's all a game, people, Like
- 30:50Speaker 2: he knows the deal. He knows that he had a
- 30:53Speaker 2: crazy run, so it's like he's got to get that
- 30:55Speaker 2: deal before he takes the field. And that's my view
- 30:57Speaker 2: of him. It's like I need another year of it
- 30:58Speaker 2: chat because I just as good as I think he is.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I still think a lot of it's on the floor.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Like I've just thought, he set him up so perfectly.
- 31:05Speaker 2: If you look at a lot of those plays, it was
- 31:07Speaker 2: first read the guy's open, right, It's like the design
- 31:11Speaker 2: of the scheme really plays into that, which I probably
- 31:13Speaker 2: shouldn't do too much because I had Purty and Golf
- 31:16Speaker 2: in my top ten, which again which Rich said it's
- 31:18Speaker 2: a very fair point. But yeah, I just Jordan love
- 31:22Speaker 2: for me is right there, right. I probably have him
- 31:24Speaker 2: at twelve thirteen. His skill level was just out of
- 31:27Speaker 2: this world after the final seven weeks. But it's just
- 31:31Speaker 2: I'm just not a full believer yet.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I should make a point. All of these guys to
- 31:40Speaker 1: me are below Caleb Williams. I just want to be
- 31:44Speaker 1: clear about that. To me, this is like the ten
- 31:47Speaker 1: best quarterbacks other than Kayleb Williams. We're sort of playing
- 31:51Speaker 1: a game here because we know he's going to be
- 31:55Speaker 1: the guy you bet on, you build a franchise around,
- 31:58Speaker 1: And honestly, Rich, no joke. If that's going to be
- 32:02Speaker 1: your criteria, why wouldn't Caleb Williams be on that list?
- 32:06Speaker 3: Well?
- 32:06Speaker 4: I considered it for winning a Super Bowl this year.
- 32:08Speaker 4: So I originally was going to do starting a franchise, right,
- 32:11Speaker 4: like yeah, like, and I actually was going to have
- 32:14Speaker 4: Jordan Love and Caleb because I was factoring in age
- 32:17Speaker 4: like Stafford would. Then Stafford would get reduced, right if
- 32:19Speaker 4: I was building a franchise like I would, Stafford Old
- 32:22Speaker 4: probably only has what one two five years left, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 4: depending he wants to play till he's like early forty,
- 32:27Speaker 4: so it'll be thirty six this year. Factoring in age,
- 32:30Speaker 4: I definitely would have Caleb, like if I was starting
- 32:32Speaker 4: a franchise. Absolutely, I actually thought about that, just for
- 32:35Speaker 4: the hot takiness of having that be. You know, if
- 32:37Speaker 4: if I was a better brander, I would have done it.
- 32:41Speaker 4: It was better at playing the game, you know it.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Also, you're just you're not as emotionally attached to the
- 32:49Speaker 1: Bears as maybe one.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Hey, I tried to talk to you guys down from
- 32:53Speaker 4: justin Fields last year.
- 32:55Speaker 2: There was no there was no yeah drank, Yeah, we're
- 32:59Speaker 2: both sitt one hundred and one tickets. I think of
- 33:01Speaker 2: that time they were down like fifty to one or sixty. Yeah, Well,
- 33:04Speaker 2: we were just really feeling ourselves.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Are you kidding me? I was like cashing that ticket.
- 33:09Speaker 1: I was so ready to look so smart with Justin Fields.
- 33:13Speaker 1: But now we look back and we're like, and I
- 33:16Speaker 1: watch some highlights from last year and he's just not there,
- 33:22Speaker 1: and it's so uncomfortable and upsetting to watch it and
- 33:27Speaker 1: relive it in a way where like, I was so
- 33:30Speaker 1: invested and I wanted him to be so good, and
- 33:33Speaker 1: you watch him against compared to you with a CJ. Strouder,
- 33:36Speaker 1: even a Jordan Love That Packers game was just heartbreaking
- 33:40Speaker 1: last year when you saw that he wasn't there. Listen, Rich,
- 33:45Speaker 1: life is about learning, it's about evolving, right, and so
- 33:50Speaker 1: we've learned and that's why we got Kaylyn Williams. Would
- 33:53Speaker 1: you say, Rich, is QB play improving or getting worse
- 33:59Speaker 1: overall in the NFL.
- 34:01Speaker 4: I just had an article come out today on This
- 34:04Speaker 4: is a free article on the site and shows just
- 34:05Speaker 4: how bad the last two years have been, you know
- 34:08Speaker 4: for NFL. You know, passing offenses and a lot, a
- 34:12Speaker 4: lot goes into it, right, It's not really just one thing.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Obviously you add the seventeenth game, which means there's more injuries.
- 34:19Speaker 4: I talk about, you know, how many quarterbacks have played.
- 34:21Speaker 4: We're getting more quarterbacks starting than ever before. More offensive
- 34:24Speaker 4: linemen are starting than ever before. As a byproduct of that,
- 34:27Speaker 4: which kind of goes into some things, offensive line continuity
- 34:30Speaker 4: has been at all time low. We've got this kind
- 34:33Speaker 4: of like current defensive meta. We've got kind of teams
- 34:35Speaker 4: playing a lot more you know, a lot more coverage,
- 34:37Speaker 4: a lot more too high stuff. They're trying to make
- 34:39Speaker 4: you drive the field, not give up, you know, one
- 34:42Speaker 4: to two play drives. They want you to have seven
- 34:44Speaker 4: to eight play drives. They want you to make a
- 34:45Speaker 4: mistake on a drive. And like all these things kind
- 34:49Speaker 4: of are are playing into it. We're also seeing the
- 34:52Speaker 4: I don't know it's the facilitation of the college game
- 34:54Speaker 4: into the NFL, But so shotgun. The rate of plays
- 34:57Speaker 4: in the shotgun have gone up in the NFL, and
- 34:59Speaker 4: last year was an all time high. And when you
- 35:01Speaker 4: have the shotgun plays rise, you lose the under center
- 35:06Speaker 4: versatility of the play action. Last year, play action was
- 35:08Speaker 4: at all time low, and play action passing still remains
- 35:11Speaker 4: a cheat code, you know. Play action passes still were
- 35:14Speaker 4: uber successful the last two years, even though passing as
- 35:17Speaker 4: a whole was some of the worst we've seen in
- 35:19Speaker 4: the two thousands. So there's like all these like pulling
- 35:22Speaker 4: factors that go into it. But the NFL is trying
- 35:25Speaker 4: to be cognitizantves they know that scoring has been bad
- 35:27Speaker 4: the last year's they're, you know, hopefully the kickoff rules
- 35:30Speaker 4: maybe you know, elevates some scoring. Maybe the hip drop tackles,
- 35:34Speaker 4: you know some you add some hidden yards in this
- 35:37Speaker 4: into this as well. But we have to be a
- 35:39Speaker 4: little bit concerned to where we are from a like
- 35:41Speaker 4: a current you know, defensive metastance, just because defenses are
- 35:46Speaker 4: kind of dictating the way the game is played now.
- 35:48Speaker 4: I mean, more passes are being thrown behind the line
- 35:50Speaker 4: of scrimmage than ever before. Air yards that continue to
- 35:53Speaker 4: go down. They've gone down four years in a row.
- 35:55Speaker 4: There's just like a lot of things here that are
- 35:57Speaker 4: like they are hard to see, like completely change. But
- 36:00Speaker 4: we've got a lot of good young quarterbacks. I think
- 36:02Speaker 4: in the ESPN article today, I think I read there
- 36:05Speaker 4: are only four starting quarterbacks this year in the NFL
- 36:07Speaker 4: that have won a Super Bowl, And that was like
- 36:09Speaker 4: mind blowing to me.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Wait a second, who would that be? It would be
- 36:14Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes obviously.
- 36:17Speaker 4: Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson, and I'm missing one.
- 36:25Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 36:26Speaker 3: I think that's it.
- 36:27Speaker 4: There's only four Aaron Rodgers, Rogers.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Getting that's a great point, and Rich everything you're saying
- 36:35Speaker 1: is brilliant and people should go check out the article
- 36:37Speaker 1: because your spot on and your stuff is so good
- 36:40Speaker 1: and so clarifying. None of us talked about Aaron Rodgers
- 36:46Speaker 1: and obviously massive risks coming back forty something years old
- 36:52Speaker 1: off the Achilles tendon tear. But it's interesting to me ESPN.
- 36:58Speaker 1: You just mentioned ESPN they put out a quarterbacks list today.
- 37:01Speaker 1: We did not plan on doing our podcast list at
- 37:04Speaker 1: the same time in the same day, but they put
- 37:07Speaker 1: it out. Their list had Aaron Rodgers. It feels a
- 37:11Speaker 1: little trolley to me, like Jet's bias Aaron Rodgers bias,
- 37:16Speaker 1: like not really thinking about the game. What is both
- 37:19Speaker 1: of your takes on Aaron Rodgers on a list like this,
- 37:24Speaker 1: either from Riches's perspective, which is winning a Super Bowl
- 37:29Speaker 1: in the next year or two, and our perspective, which
- 37:31Speaker 1: is a guy you don't want to bet against or
- 37:34Speaker 1: a guy you want to bet on. Simon you start, Yeah.
- 37:38Speaker 2: I would say Rogers is just East been. Putting them
- 37:42Speaker 2: in their top ten makes sense. I mean ESPN's whole
- 37:46Speaker 2: goal is for you to click on their products. The
- 37:48Speaker 2: reason they talk about the Cowboys and the Lakers every day,
- 37:50Speaker 2: or the Yankees, whatever they do, it's just that's their
- 37:52Speaker 2: company's job. So yeah, Rogers in their top ten. Sure
- 37:55Speaker 2: you want to put a guy who hasn't played football
- 37:57Speaker 2: in two years, and you know he's forty one and
- 38:00Speaker 2: the last time we did se him play football first season,
- 38:01Speaker 2: he was terrible, his worst season of his career.
- 38:04Speaker 3: It all makes sense.
- 38:04Speaker 2: But from my Betty perspective chat, you know, I'm high
- 38:06Speaker 2: on the Jets, and it's because to me, they have
- 38:08Speaker 2: the most complete team right now. I love their offensive weapons,
- 38:11Speaker 2: I love their defensive weapons.
- 38:13Speaker 3: It's all there.
- 38:13Speaker 2: And I don't need Rogers to be a top ten
- 38:16Speaker 2: even a top fifteen quarterback. If you have him come
- 38:18Speaker 2: in and just be a Jimmy Garoppolo type, right the
- 38:21Speaker 2: guy that can make the right lead within the system.
- 38:25Speaker 2: That's the best quarterback the Jets have had in thirty
- 38:28Speaker 2: forty years. I mean it really is, because his skill
- 38:30Speaker 2: level is just that high. Like when we're hoping we
- 38:33Speaker 2: have those little moments with flashes of Rodgers that he
- 38:35Speaker 2: is his old top ten self, but I don't think
- 38:37Speaker 2: that's gonna be consistent.
- 38:38Speaker 3: He's just too old, Chad. There's just too much times past, right.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So the fear I think would be for Jets fans
- 38:43Speaker 2: is you're gonna get to Sean Watson, a guy who's
- 38:45Speaker 2: clearly lost it mentally and.
- 38:47Speaker 3: He can't find it again, like whatever. Whatever.
- 38:49Speaker 2: The Deshaun Watson we saw in Houston has not been
- 38:52Speaker 2: the guy we've ever seen on the Browns. That's the
- 38:55Speaker 2: fear for Jets fans. Just I can't see that with
- 38:57Speaker 2: with Rodgers. I just think he's not mentally weaked that way,
- 39:00Speaker 2: and the skill is there just because he's aged out.
- 39:02Speaker 2: I think he's aged out of this top ten. He's
- 39:05Speaker 2: just you can't get back into it if he had
- 39:06Speaker 2: a good run. Do we really think the runs can
- 39:09Speaker 2: because of Aaron Rodgers just because the pieces around him.
- 39:12Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm in sure here with rich things because
- 39:13Speaker 2: I just I'm not it's not it's not really shitting
- 39:15Speaker 2: on the guy. It's just he's forty one. We haven't
- 39:17Speaker 2: seen him play fotball in two years.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Yeah, by the way, it's really what it was for me.
- 39:22Speaker 4: I mean, that's why I kept him off, and we
- 39:23Speaker 4: really only seen one guy ever do this, even when
- 39:25Speaker 4: when I factor in just winning a super Bowl in
- 39:27Speaker 4: isolation this year, it's still betting on a forty one
- 39:29Speaker 4: year old quarterback, like there's only been one Tom Brady, Like,
- 39:33Speaker 4: it's hard, it's hard to consider that we're going to
- 39:36Speaker 4: get another one. I would say, Rogers does seem to
- 39:39Speaker 4: have like that much spite in him though to to
- 39:42Speaker 4: like not be.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Exactly That's why.
- 39:44Speaker 2: That's why it's like I don't want to I don't
- 39:46Speaker 2: want to bet against him like I would Watton, because
- 39:48Speaker 2: it's like there's no man more spiteful in football.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about clarifying Simon the way you just framed it.
- 39:55Speaker 1: A forty one year old guy who hasn't played in
- 39:57Speaker 1: two years, coming up from achilles injury, who's last season
- 40:00Speaker 1: was one of his worst. Yeah, And so I think
- 40:03Speaker 1: oftentimes with Rogers, you're so clouded by the talent and
- 40:08Speaker 1: what he can do as a quarterback.
- 40:10Speaker 2: I mean, rich touch on football, the defenses that have
- 40:12Speaker 2: never been more athletic than they are right now.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Check.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Like when I talk to people in the league, they're
- 40:16Speaker 2: saying the football field has never been smaller. It just
- 40:19Speaker 2: is it's so small now because every guy is a freak.
- 40:22Speaker 2: These d backs are all super long and fast. The
- 40:25Speaker 2: d ns are all running like four four forties. It's
- 40:28Speaker 2: like football has just evolved so much now that the
- 40:31Speaker 2: defense have made the field so small with the cover
- 40:34Speaker 2: two style, where it's like that everyone's being treated like
- 40:37Speaker 2: they're mahomes now. Like Rich was saying, they want you
- 40:39Speaker 2: to dink in dunk downfield. It's why you know a
- 40:41Speaker 2: guy like Jalen Hurts, not that I'm saying he's the
- 40:43Speaker 2: best deep thrower, he has opportunities to throw the ball
- 40:46Speaker 2: down the field because the Eagles are a run first team.
- 40:49Speaker 2: There's not really any other teams like that, right, Like
- 40:51Speaker 2: the Chiefs are not a run first team. They're never
- 40:53Speaker 2: going to have the safeties coming down. So to Rich's point,
- 40:56Speaker 2: it's just it's a different league and we'll see if
- 40:58Speaker 2: Rogers can adjust to that, because just in three years,
- 41:01Speaker 2: the league has has really changed since he's been a starter.
- 41:04Speaker 4: And I wish I factored that into my Deshaun Watson
- 41:06Speaker 4: stuff from last year because I think when you look
- 41:08Speaker 4: at Deshaun Watson's play style, in a very similar fashion
- 41:11Speaker 4: to young Russell Wilson. It's just not conducive to ay
- 41:14Speaker 4: the league is playing right now. I mean you think
- 41:16Speaker 4: of Russell Wilson when he was absolutely thriving. I mean,
- 41:19Speaker 4: no player would like extend plays. He wants a big
- 41:23Speaker 4: game hunt. He doesn't necessarily like throw in rhythm over
- 41:26Speaker 4: the middle of the field. And that's like where the
- 41:28Speaker 4: defense is. He they want to attack you now. They
- 41:29Speaker 4: want you to attack right now. They want you to
- 41:31Speaker 4: beat you. You have to beat them in the quick
- 41:33Speaker 4: game and over the middle of the field. And that's
- 41:35Speaker 4: kind of like Deshaun Watson like doesn't really have that either.
- 41:38Speaker 4: And I wonder if like that the current defensive metas
- 41:40Speaker 4: kind of played a role just outside of the other
- 41:43Speaker 4: factors with Deshaun Watson as well.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Well, that's how good these athletes are. The NFL is
- 41:50Speaker 1: doing everything it possibly can to make it impossible for
- 41:54Speaker 1: you to play defense, and they are so good at
- 41:57Speaker 1: it that even with all the rules against helping the defense,
- 42:03Speaker 1: it's still changing the game so effectively that quarterbacks who
- 42:08Speaker 1: might have been great three years ago are not great now.

- 43:37Speaker 1: how many good qbs are there? How many not sure yet?
- 43:42Speaker 1: How many replacement level or worse?
- 43:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's interesting thing about this list, right,
- 43:47Speaker 4: because I said, I'm actually fairly nebulous, Like I don't
- 43:50Speaker 4: have a lot of pushback if that Trevor Lawrence isn't
- 43:52Speaker 4: on your list, even if you're going by the same criteria.
- 43:54Speaker 4: I am right, Like, I think that that's already where
- 43:57Speaker 4: you like get to like a wide open area, like
- 44:00Speaker 4: what do we really have? And I thank God that
- 44:03Speaker 4: I'm not running into these franchises and have to give
- 44:05Speaker 4: out this money to these guys right that are in
- 44:07Speaker 4: kind of those limbo spots. I think it's very clearly
- 44:10Speaker 4: you've got like even though we list these guys one, two, three,
- 44:13Speaker 4: like Patrick Mahomes is widely number one, Like there's a
- 44:16Speaker 4: wide gap. You know, we're definitely in a zone where
- 44:19Speaker 4: he's in like a Jordan esque type ron and he
- 44:21Speaker 4: was mortal. Last year. The Chiefs gave you a chance
- 44:24Speaker 4: and they still won the Super Bowl last year. Like,
- 44:26Speaker 4: you know it's good.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Did you watch like you watch? I don't know if
- 44:31Speaker 1: you guys watched Receivers on Netflix at all yet. And
- 44:36Speaker 1: you know it's it's the same concept as the year
- 44:40Speaker 1: before with Quarterback the documentary with Mahomes and Kirk Cousins,
- 44:45Speaker 1: and this year it's Receivers. It's Devonte Adams and it's
- 44:49Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson, and it's George Kittle and Deebo Samuel and
- 44:58Speaker 1: and i'man Russ Saint Brown. The physicality in these games,
- 45:02Speaker 1: which we know about, it's nothing surprising, but when you
- 45:05Speaker 1: see the field level hits, these guys are all hurt
- 45:09Speaker 1: within two weeks, and not just like hurt, they are
- 45:15Speaker 1: physically transformed, like their ligaments aren't working. They can't lift
- 45:20Speaker 1: their arms, they can't move their feet, and they are
- 45:24Speaker 1: still going out there every week and playing. It is
- 45:27Speaker 1: a terrible game. I love it so much. It makes
- 45:29Speaker 1: me so happy, like I'm so excited for the season
- 45:33Speaker 1: to come back. But oh my god, the crunching of
- 45:40Speaker 1: the bodies from these defenders on these receivers is nightmarish.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I don't know how you can play this game.
- 45:46Speaker 3: That's why we love it though, right ta they're gladiators.
- 45:48Speaker 2: And I think even when you talk about quarterbacks, Kirk
- 45:50Speaker 2: Cousins when he was on the show, The QB Show,
- 45:53Speaker 2: I think it was his wife was like wrapping up
- 45:54Speaker 2: the tape around in his like broken ribs, and it's like,
- 45:58Speaker 2: you know, he's got a game in three days.
- 45:59Speaker 3: What he was talking amount. It's just that's the crazy
- 46:01Speaker 3: mentality we think about. But you know, me and.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Chat talked about it, like you thought last year was
- 46:05Speaker 2: a down season, which I get. I can't fault you
- 46:07Speaker 2: for that. A lot of people thought last year was
- 46:08Speaker 2: a down season the NFL, just from the watching perspective, right,
- 46:11Speaker 2: too much referee drama, not enough scoring, a lot of bs.
- 46:14Speaker 2: But I always joke with people, especially when around my
- 46:16Speaker 2: friends where we've been drinking, I tell him, go go
- 46:19Speaker 2: look at two thousand. You think two thousand and seven
- 46:20Speaker 2: was a great year, go look at a top ten
- 46:22Speaker 2: list of the best quarterback from two thousand and seven.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Go look at those names, and it's just it's just
- 46:27Speaker 2: different now where I do think we are in the
- 46:28Speaker 2: Golden Age. But it's just everything's gotten so much better.
- 46:31Speaker 2: The coaching really has gotten so much better, where like
- 46:35Speaker 2: back in the day, there was maybe five six guys
- 46:37Speaker 2: that were pretty good. Now that I mean, we could
- 46:39Speaker 2: go through a list, like there's ten guys who were
- 46:41Speaker 2: all pretty good at this right, there's always these up
- 46:43Speaker 2: and coming young guys.
- 46:44Speaker 3: With new ideas.
- 46:45Speaker 2: So that's just my view of it where I agree
- 46:48Speaker 2: with what you're saying, Chad, that, like the the quarterbacking
- 46:51Speaker 2: play does feel like it's taken a step down, but
- 46:54Speaker 2: I think it was because when you think of the past,
- 46:56Speaker 2: the past will always be sweeter.
- 46:57Speaker 3: When every you think of the past, it always tastes
- 46:59Speaker 3: a little sweeter.
- 47:00Speaker 2: But you're thinking back to yeah, Rogers, you know, had
- 47:02Speaker 2: fifty touchdowns and four interceptions and Tom Brady had fifty
- 47:06Speaker 2: three touchdowns and ten ares. I'm just like, yes, guys,
- 47:08Speaker 2: they all had peak seasons. I don't think we're going
- 47:11Speaker 2: to get back to those days, right. I just think
- 47:12Speaker 2: the game has changed so much now that you know
- 47:14Speaker 2: we're talking about Stafford, go look at Stafford's numbers from
- 47:17Speaker 2: last year.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Chat.
- 47:18Speaker 2: He really wasn't that great because they were a run
- 47:21Speaker 2: first team, and like that's the thing. Now football's changed
- 47:23Speaker 2: where it's like the teams have had to adjust to
- 47:25Speaker 2: this new cover two defense where it's like would you
- 47:28Speaker 2: rather throw the ball and risk it being taken picked
- 47:31Speaker 2: off or judge to run it and you probably get
- 47:32Speaker 2: four or five yards per carry just because the linebackers
- 47:35Speaker 2: have dropped back. So I do get where you're coming
- 47:37Speaker 2: from that there just feels like there's going to step back.
- 47:39Speaker 2: But I just want people to remember it's like it's
- 47:41Speaker 2: just that good now. The quality of football is so
- 47:43Speaker 2: high right now that it just feels like the offenses
- 47:45Speaker 2: aren't as good. But it's like the defenses have changed,
- 47:48Speaker 2: Like you just don't see single high safety like Rich
- 47:50Speaker 2: has talked about Russell Wilson made a living off single
- 47:53Speaker 2: high safety when he had Beast Moode in the backfield.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Those days are just gone, Like teams just aren't going
- 47:57Speaker 2: to be doing that anymore.
- 47:58Speaker 4: And that's why you start to see I think this
- 48:01Speaker 4: extension of this Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, coaching tree continue
- 48:05Speaker 4: to get jobs in the NFL, and we had another
- 48:08Speaker 4: three guys get hired this offseason in Clint Kubiak, Brian
- 48:11Speaker 4: Kyllahan and Zach Robinson. So we now have eleven teams
- 48:14Speaker 4: that either have their head coach or offensive coordinator from
- 48:17Speaker 4: that coaching tree, kind of leaving wow, which is basically
- 48:21Speaker 4: a third of the league. And it inerently makes sense
- 48:23Speaker 4: because you think of how teams are playing defense now
- 48:25Speaker 4: and what style of football, and there's some different different
- 48:28Speaker 4: differentiation between like the McVeigh and Shanahan offense, but both
- 48:32Speaker 4: of those teams want to they will exploit you. If
- 48:35Speaker 4: you want to play pass coverage, they will run the
- 48:37Speaker 4: football on you at their heart like in their in
- 48:40Speaker 4: their heart of hearts. They will pound you in the
- 48:42Speaker 4: run game and then they're gonna throw over the middle
- 48:44Speaker 4: of the field. Both of those, both of those systems
- 48:46Speaker 4: and the iterations of those systems like they attack the
- 48:48Speaker 4: middle of the field. And I think it's it's not
- 48:51Speaker 4: a coincidence that more guys from those coaching trees continue
- 48:54Speaker 4: to get hired.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Listen. I would also recommend show that I started watching
- 49:00Speaker 1: with my wife last night, America's Sweethearts, which is the
- 49:06Speaker 1: series on inside the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. It is riveting.
- 49:14Speaker 1: It is so good. The people who make the choices
- 49:19Speaker 1: about who is going to make the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading
- 49:22Speaker 1: squad are ruthless, Like it is like watching a football
- 49:29Speaker 1: coach making physical judgments about the way someone looks, the
- 49:35Speaker 1: way someone performs, the way someone acts, and cutting them
- 49:39Speaker 1: on the spot, being so specific and critical about how
- 49:47Speaker 1: people look, about how they look in the uniform. It
- 49:51Speaker 1: is like, it is so honest about that, about that experience,
- 49:56Speaker 1: it is insane.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Chad, you hear that. That was a sound of everyone
- 50:00Speaker 3: turned off this podcast. Please cut all this.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Why it's so good?
- 50:05Speaker 3: I know, but it's just like, what are you doing? No?
- 50:07Speaker 3: Watch that?
- 50:08Speaker 1: People? Should? I watched.
- 50:10Speaker 4: I watched dragons that on that show?
- 50:12Speaker 1: What's that?
- 50:13Speaker 4: How many dragons around the Americas?
- 50:15Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 50:16Speaker 1: I loved it. It was really good. Started watching the
- 50:18Speaker 1: last night.
- 50:18Speaker 3: It's like, I thought, you're going to talk about the boys,
- 50:20Speaker 3: talk about Game of Thrones. No, chat's going into Dallas
- 50:24Speaker 3: Cowboys cheerleaders.
- 50:25Speaker 1: I will tell you. Look I was. I went to
- 50:26Speaker 1: Iceland on vacation and a lot of Game of Thrones
- 50:31Speaker 1: was shot in Iceland, and so we saw a bunch
- 50:35Speaker 1: of the sets like that whole country looks like it's
- 50:38Speaker 1: a Game of Thrones. And so I took a lot
- 50:40Speaker 1: of pictures.
- 50:41Speaker 3: What was the weather there? Was it in like the
- 50:42Speaker 3: forties fifties?
- 50:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it was terrible, every day crazy in July forties fifties,
- 50:46Speaker 1: missing gray, haunting, eerie, beautiful, beautiful country. Their marketing team
- 50:54Speaker 1: has done a great job because I felt like I
- 50:57Speaker 1: had to go to Iceland and uh, I'm glad I've
- 51:01Speaker 1: done it. I don't need to go back. Loved it.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Beautiful country. We got to get out of here. I
- 51:09Speaker 1: do want to thank Rich Reebar Lord Reeves on X
- 51:14Speaker 1: find him at Sharp Football Analysis. His stuff is fantastic,
- 51:18Speaker 1: as you heard a little bit on the show today.
