- 0:05Speaker 1: Something needs to be addressed before we do anything.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Oh dear, what is it?
- 0:09Speaker 1: Something has happened, something has gone down and has potentially
- 0:14Speaker 1: put this podcast in disrepute, And for once it wasn't me.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Oh what happened? What did I do?
- 0:23Speaker 1: We released an episode a while back, Yes, claiming to
- 0:28Speaker 1: do the first drive in Australia of a BYD at
- 0:31Speaker 1: oh three. Oh yes, we will promise that. Yes, from
- 0:34Speaker 1: the fine people at BYD. Beyond your Dreams, Build, Build
- 0:40Speaker 1: your dreams, Beyond your Dreams built whatever work working title.
- 0:45Speaker 1: There is a member of the media that had the
- 0:49Speaker 1: car before me, and there was no driving impressions to
- 0:54Speaker 1: be put out on this car other than this podcast.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We were supposed to get the first drive. This weasel
- 1:07Speaker 1: of a person. Now we've talked to the lawyers here.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I'm not allowed to use his real name, so let's
- 1:14Speaker 1: just call him I don't know Trevor, and I'm not
- 1:20Speaker 1: allowed to say where he works. I'm allowed to say
- 1:22Speaker 1: it's like a morning TV show, So let's just sort
- 1:25Speaker 1: of say.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The second highest rated morning TV.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, let's just make up any name of a morning
- 1:31Speaker 1: TV show at a fictitious show. I don't know the
- 1:33Speaker 1: Today show now, Can I just before.
- 1:38Speaker 3: You No, No, this guy published a first Impressions and
- 1:47Speaker 3: a first drive less than twenty four hours after he
- 1:53Speaker 3: handed me the car.
- 1:54Speaker 1: He wasn't even supposed to put anything out there. He
- 1:57Speaker 1: find tests fridges. So this is what I'm saying here,
- 2:02Speaker 1: This is why we do what we do because these
- 2:06Speaker 1: so called journalists, I don't know who they are. What
- 2:10Speaker 1: he does, you can't trust him. Oh but it was
- 2:13Speaker 1: it was EV week. They wanted me for EV week
- 2:17Speaker 1: and so I came on there for the today's EV Week.
- 2:21Speaker 1: They wanted you and they got PISS Week.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Can I just say I actually quite liked Trevor, So.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm not what you told me off a. You told
- 2:30Speaker 1: me he was an overweight bag of shit. He's actually
- 2:34Speaker 1: quite a nice guy. And I think that for anyone
- 2:38Speaker 1: to have done.
- 2:38Speaker 4: That, and he probably wouldn't have known that he wasn't
- 2:40Speaker 4: allowed to do that because I just judging by my
- 2:43Speaker 4: interactions with the.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Judging by my text message is that I got from
- 2:48Speaker 1: beyond your dreams, build your dreams. He was he was
- 2:53Speaker 1: quite aware.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Interesting, now that you've simmered down.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Let me just tell you something. He looks like the
- 2:59Speaker 1: kind of guy that eats hot dogs for dinner. Me, No, no, no,
- 3:05Speaker 1: no no. So you'd have you'd get your missus would
- 3:08Speaker 1: be away for the night, and you'd go right here
- 3:11Speaker 1: this is, and you'd go down to the safeway and
- 3:13Speaker 1: you'd get like a six pack of sausages and a
- 3:16Speaker 1: loaf of bread, and you'd have like a sausage and bread. Right,
- 3:19Speaker 1: But this guy would just eat an action like who
- 3:23Speaker 1: has who? You're a grown adult and you'd have hot
- 3:26Speaker 1: dogs for dinner anyway, Paul shaking his head, and I
- 3:34Speaker 1: think I might have ruined a friendship. Love your work, Trev,
- 3:37Speaker 1: stick to the vacuum cleaners.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So on with the episode'ute again now literally I'm looking
- 3:46Speaker 4: at the counter.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Oh Jesus, I'm okay. Hey, let's talk about some cars
- 3:52Speaker 1: that have popped out onto the scene, yes, Jesus, and
- 3:55Speaker 1: ones that have excited me young day have dropped quite
- 3:58Speaker 1: a few little, I don't know, rip snorts of cars, Like,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think they've been putting out some pretty cool things.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so two cars they launched, well three cars.
- 4:07Speaker 4: So they launched the ion X six, which look, I'm
- 4:10Speaker 4: no design expert, but I think it looks gross.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The back of it looks kind of like an au Falcon.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Which full respect to the au Falcon, but that belongs
- 4:19Speaker 4: in the early two thousands.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's where it should have stayed.
- 4:23Speaker 4: But anyway, they then rolled out two other things that
- 4:25Speaker 4: got me quite excited.
- 4:26Speaker 2: So the first was the.
- 4:27Speaker 4: R N twenty two E and the N Vision seventy
- 4:32Speaker 4: four and they're both zero emission rolling lab concepts. So
- 4:37Speaker 4: the R twenty two E is an all electric concept
- 4:40Speaker 4: car and I think that's what's going to be the
- 4:42Speaker 4: production ion X six N that will eventually translate to
- 4:45Speaker 4: the IX five N as well. But the N Vision
- 4:48Speaker 4: seventy four is this kind of retro looking concept that's
- 4:52Speaker 4: powered by hydrogen.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's get to that in a set, because
- 4:55Speaker 1: I feel like that that's a complete beast of a car. Ye,
- 4:58Speaker 1: first of all, your impressions of the we are in
- 5:00Speaker 1: twenty two E. It's a pretty cool car. Again, I
- 5:03Speaker 1: feel like it's borrowed styling wise, bits and pieces.
- 5:06Speaker 2: From the au Falcon.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well perhaps, and also like the front sort of
- 5:10Speaker 1: looks like Tykhan a little bit, you know, with the
- 5:12Speaker 1: with the lights there. That rear has got a kind
- 5:15Speaker 1: of ADDI vibe about it. Very on the on the
- 5:18Speaker 1: side there, it's almost.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Like an A seven at the back, you falcon.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think it's cool.
- 5:26Speaker 4: So with the twenty two E, they're saying that it's
- 5:29Speaker 4: powered by two electric motors four hundred and thirty kilowatts
- 5:31Speaker 4: seven hundred and forty newton meters. So this is basically
- 5:34Speaker 4: going to be Yuda's version of the EV six GT,
- 5:37Speaker 4: which is the fast fast one.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I think they reckon. It will do over two.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Hundred and fifty kilometers an hour, which is pretty impressive.
- 5:46Speaker 4: The EV six GT is two sixty claimed, which is
- 5:50Speaker 4: just amazing for an electric car that they've been able
- 5:52Speaker 4: to achieve that. And it sits on the EGMP platform,
- 5:55Speaker 4: which is the IIC five platform, which means it has
- 5:57Speaker 4: eight hundred VOULT charging. It is actually a good would
- 6:00Speaker 4: EV platform. So yeah, I think that's that's exciting.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But the thing that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Sorry, those EV six gts are starting to pop up
- 6:08Speaker 1: in America and stuff right now.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah, so that's like the proper fast one. In Australia,
- 6:12Speaker 4: we have the GT line and this will be the
- 6:14Speaker 4: full fat GT version.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Zero to one hundred in like under four like three
- 6:20Speaker 1: point five or a point something.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, which is bloody amazing decent. Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 4: The second one was the the hydrogen concept, which is
- 6:29Speaker 4: called the n Vision seventy four. Now, this looks really
- 6:32Speaker 4: cool because it's it's kind of based on what he
- 6:35Speaker 4: called the Pony concept that they did ages and ages ago,
- 6:39Speaker 4: and this borrows a lot of styling cues from that.
- 6:41Speaker 4: It's got those cube headlights that you see on on
- 6:44Speaker 4: I five as well. This one's cool because it has
- 6:47Speaker 4: again dual re amount of electric motors over five hundred
- 6:51Speaker 4: kilwatts nine hundred meters of talque hydrogen fuel stack as
- 6:55Speaker 4: it's power source.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I just think that this this will.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I guess this kind of signals Hendau's intention to not
- 7:04Speaker 4: move away from hydrogen. Tesla has forced a lot of
- 7:07Speaker 4: manufacturers to pick a side hydrogen or electric, and I
- 7:11Speaker 4: think Henday's trying to have a toe in both camps.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think that's a good move. It may not be sensible, yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: it may not necessarily be business savvy move, because I
- 7:19Speaker 1: know hydrogen is bloody expensive in all aspects, especially right
- 7:24Speaker 1: now and especially because it's early days, but there's certainly
- 7:27Speaker 1: a lot of benefits at the moment to hydrogen over electric.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Well, the reason This one is very interesting. Is because
- 7:34Speaker 4: something like a mirror, which is Toyota's version, it only
- 7:37Speaker 4: has a one point to kill aut our battery, so
- 7:39Speaker 4: it's it's very small nod.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You just go ahead and eat.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Sorry, you keep going, I'm just going to use some bacon.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Ye just pop that back in your mouth. So the
- 7:46Speaker 4: mirror uses a tiny little battery that is.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Little them enjoy this without your talking.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Just for a reference as well, he had a cookie
- 7:55Speaker 2: before that.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So I can't find my corky because you hate it.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's why he's found down.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'm a happy man, all right. Now keep talking about
- 8:04Speaker 1: something I don't give a shit about it.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Yes, So Mira uses a small one point two killer
- 8:09Speaker 4: at our battery and a five kilogram hydrogen tank. And
- 8:12Speaker 4: the way that it works is the hydrogen fuel stank
- 8:14Speaker 4: basically runs an electric motor. It charges that small battery,
- 8:17Speaker 4: and the battery discharges to the road. The Hyundai version, though,
- 8:21Speaker 4: uses a massive battery, so it's a sixty two kilo
- 8:24Speaker 4: at our battery. It's the same size of battery you'd
- 8:26Speaker 4: find in something like a ConA a ConA EV, and
- 8:30Speaker 4: it uses a small hydrogen tank so it's able to
- 8:34Speaker 4: use the hydrogen fuel stack to generate ninety five kilowats
- 8:36Speaker 4: to charge the battery, and then it uses the battery
- 8:39Speaker 4: to power the car. So this is a completely different
- 8:41Speaker 4: concept to anything we've seen before, and I think that
- 8:44Speaker 4: this is the way to go. You don't really want
- 8:46Speaker 4: something like a Mirah, which is so painfully slow and
- 8:50Speaker 4: not interesting.
- 8:51Speaker 2: This actually sort of bridges the gap between them. So yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I love this, And I may or may not.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Be getting a closer look at these very very very soon.
- 9:02Speaker 1: What does that mean You've already looked at them and
- 9:03Speaker 1: you're not telling.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Me I may or may not.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Have you looked at them already?
- 9:08Speaker 2: I may or may not.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I know they're in the country.
- 9:11Speaker 2: No, all right, next news story.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Why can't you invite me to this shit? It's only
- 9:16Speaker 1: for you and Trevor going together? Are you? That explains
- 9:19Speaker 1: a lot? That explains a hell of a lot.
- 9:21Speaker 4: They wanted someone with a bit of clout, you know,
- 9:23Speaker 4: someone that gets gets stuff.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Someone that can vaguely knows about cars, but it can
- 9:28Speaker 1: also tell you what vacuum cleaned are buy.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Now, guess what's been axed from Australia.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Hang on, I'm still looking at the n Vision seventy.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Four, Welcome to five Minutes Ago. Very Dolorean, yeah exactly,
- 9:41Speaker 2: and also very pony concept from the seventies.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Right yeah, that was that that that was their original one, right, Yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: it looks good.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yes, guess what's been axed from Australia.
- 9:50Speaker 1: A car that I don't reckon should have been asked
- 9:52Speaker 1: from Australia.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Yes, two of them actually, so the Ford for Esa
- 9:55Speaker 4: ST and the Focus ST.
- 9:58Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I just don't get that. So Ford. I think it's
- 10:02Speaker 2: probably a smart move by Ford.
- 10:03Speaker 4: They've realized that they only sell in Australia the Ranger
- 10:06Speaker 4: and the Mustang, and they've realized they really shouldn't be
- 10:08Speaker 4: wasting time on anything that isn't an suv or a
- 10:11Speaker 4: dual cabut or a commercial vehicle.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Once upon a time, though, like small cars were all
- 10:16Speaker 1: the rage, you know what I mean, like it ebbs
- 10:18Speaker 1: and flows.
- 10:19Speaker 4: But these still sell quite well, like in Australia, stuff
- 10:22Speaker 4: like I twenty thirty and they all sell really well.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It's just Ford.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Hasn't really committed to doing much with these cars.
- 10:30Speaker 2: You look at Ynday, they've got a performance club.
- 10:32Speaker 4: They're really sort of throwing a lot at their performance
- 10:34Speaker 4: cars with Ford. Just I don't know Ford had their
- 10:37Speaker 4: performance club as well, but I think that it just
- 10:39Speaker 4: kind of really didn't That's true.
- 10:41Speaker 1: They're like much about it. They're all they're all doing it,
- 10:44Speaker 1: nit Toyota are doing it with the gr.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So anyway, it's sad to see these gone.
- 10:50Speaker 4: They were actually pretty decent cars and at one point
- 10:53Speaker 4: in the past actually ran Focus st with an available
- 10:57Speaker 4: mound tune aftermarket tune and that thing was.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Basically like just a menace on the road. It was
- 11:03Speaker 2: pretty cool.
- 11:04Speaker 4: So yeah, rip there for the Focus and the Fiesta
- 11:10Speaker 4: for Australia.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Can imagine you in a Focus. I can just imagine
- 11:13Speaker 1: I saw you in a cute little car, which we'll
- 11:15Speaker 1: talk about later, but imagine you've done around a little Focus.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I have got some exciting news that that you'll love
- 11:23Speaker 4: and that you probably already know about you And guess
- 11:27Speaker 4: what is asking you to guess a lot in this episode.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I know thousands of this car are due in Australia
- 11:34Speaker 4: within weeks, and I'll give you a hint. Oh yeah,
- 11:37Speaker 4: it's the world's best electric vehicle, according to.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You, world's best. Ye I think I think you've got
- 11:43Speaker 1: your facts wrong. I think I think you'd say maybe
- 11:47Speaker 1: the highest selling electric car in China, but I wouldn't
- 11:50Speaker 1: call it the world's best.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That's what you were told to say.
- 11:53Speaker 1: But all right, come on mate, the b y d
- 11:56Speaker 1: Atto three is they're coming.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I told you the better late than never, longest wait
- 12:02Speaker 4: of my life.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So the b yd just because you.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Still haven't se what he did was left hand drive.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Didn't even sit in the left hand drive one.
- 12:13Speaker 4: So the Atto three, they've got thousands of them coming
- 12:16Speaker 4: on a boat. They claim that they have four thousand
- 12:19Speaker 4: sales banked, and strangely, retired footballer Tim Cahill is a
- 12:25Speaker 4: brand ambassador for ev director company that's selling them.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So is he was at the launch that I went to.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I just don't get it. What's the connection?
- 12:33Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Why is he famous?
- 12:36Speaker 1: He's a famous football he's a famous guy.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Didn't he have a Vron at one point?
- 12:40Speaker 1: What?
- 12:41Speaker 5: Oh?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, he did too. Yep.
- 12:43Speaker 4: This seems like a bit of a side step yes,
- 12:47Speaker 4: side and then very much down.
- 12:49Speaker 1: A couple of steps into the base. Murt Oh geez,
- 12:52Speaker 1: what can they what can they do for me? So? Yeah, well,
- 12:56Speaker 1: these people are putting families in cars. I'm not going
- 12:58Speaker 1: to win.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I want to see its crash tested first.
- 13:04Speaker 4: I also want to see what the servicing rate, like,
- 13:08Speaker 4: how is it going to work?
- 13:09Speaker 2: Because it's all been very vague.
- 13:11Speaker 1: You drop it off a k mar Bro. You just
- 13:13Speaker 1: go to Camart, do your go, do your shopping and
- 13:16Speaker 1: take it to the camar tyront order.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Come back with your duney rolls.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Yeah, go, come back with some nice like the little
- 13:22Speaker 1: interiors next to the VN commodore that's getting its wheels aligned.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, excellent thing.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And then you're good to go. Is that? Oh that's
- 13:32Speaker 1: Tim Kale? Jesus, is that Tim Kale? God, he's let
- 13:36Speaker 1: himself go, hasn't he? Jesus, have a look at him.
- 13:40Speaker 1: He looks like something. He looks like a villain out
- 13:42Speaker 1: of a horror movie. He does. He really has coming
- 13:46Speaker 1: from the picture of perfection. Get out of here, pack
- 13:55Speaker 1: up your bacon, Negrol.
- 13:57Speaker 2: You're the one that had the bacon and negroll and
- 13:59Speaker 2: the cookie.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Don't touch my cookie and get out. Have a look
- 14:03Speaker 1: at him. I will kick your head like a soccer ball.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Mister Merrish, there you go.
- 14:10Speaker 2: That's that's news.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Is there? Any cars that you've seen that we should
- 14:14Speaker 1: we should talk about. It was what cars have popped
- 14:17Speaker 1: up lately. Civic Type Are.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Oh yes, yes, Civic Type Are that is coming to Australia.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's this is funny.
- 14:27Speaker 4: The current generation Civic Type Are looked very over the
- 14:30Speaker 4: top and was really out there. Yeah, and this is
- 14:33Speaker 4: more sort of like this is like the opposite. It's
- 14:35Speaker 4: so sedate that you don't really know it's a Type Are.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I agree, it's almost two kind of conservative.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, they've gone a little too far in the other direction.
- 14:45Speaker 1: It's it's either one. It's the problem with this is
- 14:48Speaker 1: and suber Usoa did this a little bit. It's either
- 14:51Speaker 1: one extreme or the other. They can't just find a
- 14:53Speaker 1: happy medium. Like I really liked when they got all
- 14:56Speaker 1: aggressive with the last hype Are, but then the paired
- 15:00Speaker 1: it down. But they've really paired it down.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it really doesn't look all that sporty,
- 15:06Speaker 4: so I'm sure it will be sporty because the Civic
- 15:08Speaker 4: Type Art was actually very engaging and fun to drive.
- 15:10Speaker 4: It didn't sound great, but it was engaging in fun,
- 15:13Speaker 4: So I'm hoping the new one sounds better but still
- 15:15Speaker 4: retains the engaging in fun despite not looking all that interesting.
- 15:18Speaker 2: So I guess we'll have to wait and see.
- 15:20Speaker 4: But there will be huge demand for this car when
- 15:22Speaker 4: it finally arrives in Australia I think next year. So yeah,
- 15:26Speaker 4: kind of looking forward to having a steer of that
- 15:28Speaker 4: as well. Probably a bunch of outrageous colors that are
- 15:31Speaker 4: coming to.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Oh god, including that red interior.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was full on.
- 15:36Speaker 1: That's a bit who ha, Why do they do that?
- 15:40Speaker 1: Do you know what? I will say that Honda have
- 15:43Speaker 1: brought out not crap, but like a lot of stuff
- 15:45Speaker 1: that just looks boring. There's nothing really exciting going on,
- 15:49Speaker 1: and I feel like what they've been dropping lately, what
- 15:52Speaker 1: they've sort of given as a peak at is actually
- 15:54Speaker 1: the start of at least they're kind of evolving a lot.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I mean you look at the old HRV
- 16:00Speaker 4: that was literally the retirement special. If you were under
- 16:04Speaker 4: seventy driving that, you're probably driving it for your great
- 16:07Speaker 4: grandparents for some reason.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So I think that Honda is turning a corner.
- 16:11Speaker 4: But yeah, the pricing is just way out, like it
- 16:13Speaker 4: is so expensive for a lot of their cars, and
- 16:16Speaker 4: they just keep jacking their prices up for no real reason.
- 16:19Speaker 1: It is so strange, and they've always been quite an
- 16:21Speaker 1: expensive car, a fairly expensive car to maintain too.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, anyway, should we.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Jump into our review?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Yeah, just before we do, I am just a little
- 16:32Speaker 4: bit concerned by the monitor above your head is a
- 16:36Speaker 4: video stream from a studio somewhere that isn't here.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Where is that?
- 16:42Speaker 1: Because I it looks it's like that is that studio.
- 16:46Speaker 1: This is great for the podcasting world. Well done, Paul,
- 16:49Speaker 1: You've really nailed the medium.
- 16:51Speaker 4: It's actually very creepy because there's there's no one in there.
- 16:54Speaker 4: The doors open and there's a trolley and I don't
- 16:56Speaker 4: remember that existing in this building.
- 16:58Speaker 1: So I am going to after we record, I'm actually
- 17:03Speaker 1: going to take you in that room and make you
- 17:05Speaker 1: smile while I take something pictures. Okay, okay, So look,
- 17:11Speaker 1: basically what that is is this is used as a
- 17:13Speaker 1: radio studio, and that is their secondary studio. It's not
- 17:18Speaker 1: much of one, but it's supposed to a secondary studio
- 17:20Speaker 1: is essentially supposed to mirror what this is. This is
- 17:23Speaker 1: where the breakfast studio are, and that studio that you
- 17:27Speaker 1: can see on the monitor, which is just over there,
- 17:30Speaker 1: is where the newsreader sits. So they basically want to even.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Why do they need to see that person?
- 17:36Speaker 1: Well, because generally when you've got like a team of
- 17:40Speaker 1: people in a radio show, you kind of want to
- 17:43Speaker 1: include people, so you want to want to see them.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Put them in a room that's like in another building exactly.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's quite inclusive. Yeah, yeah, it's terrible audio.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah anyway, Paul, just learning as we go. Shall we
- 18:02Speaker 1: do the review? Yeah, we must come on, do your
- 18:04Speaker 1: little yes, yes, aren't we excited about this? Yeah?
- 18:10Speaker 2: So sure sounds like it.
- 18:11Speaker 1: The mg HS EV LGBQ, this car has honestly more
- 18:19Speaker 1: pronouns than Demi Levado. And I know you don't know
- 18:22Speaker 1: who that is.
- 18:23Speaker 2: To say, I don't know, you don't know who that is.
- 18:25Speaker 1: But for there's going to be people who engaged in
- 18:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty two pop culture, and we'll be like, get.
- 18:32Speaker 2: That good, good one, good one, Gordon.
- 18:36Speaker 6: The twenty twenty three mg HS plus EV the Excite
- 18:40Speaker 6: model starts from forty six thousand, six hundred and ninety
- 18:43Speaker 6: dollars drive Away or the model we reviewed, the Essence
- 18:47Speaker 6: from fifty one thousand, six hundred and ninety dollars.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Now, can I explain very quickly why it's so expensive,
- 18:53Speaker 4: Because it's not an EV.
- 18:55Speaker 2: They call it a plus EV, which is just a
- 18:58Speaker 2: little bit of a bit of a marketing.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It's a tweak to the advertising. Really it is actually spin.
- 19:06Speaker 4: It is actually a plug in hybrid EV, but they
- 19:08Speaker 4: try and make it sound like an EV to make it,
- 19:10Speaker 4: you know, to make your friends think that you're great.
- 19:13Speaker 4: So the reason it's expensive is because traditionally, plug in
- 19:16Speaker 4: hybrid evs are more expensive than their standard counterparts because
- 19:20Speaker 4: they generally team a big battery, or not as big
- 19:23Speaker 4: as a big EV, but a big battery for a
- 19:25Speaker 4: regular car with an electric motor and an internal combustion engines,
- 19:29Speaker 4: you can drive on both. And with the HS plus EV,
- 19:32Speaker 4: it's got a seventeen ish killer what our battery?
- 19:36Speaker 2: Now?
- 19:37Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 19:38Speaker 4: This car just it has nothing to do with MG
- 19:42Speaker 4: in general. It's just the way that they've engineered it.
- 19:45Speaker 4: They've kind of just they've taken an internal combustion platform
- 19:49Speaker 4: and gone, okay, what can we do to make people
- 19:51Speaker 4: think this is green?
- 19:52Speaker 1: Oh?
- 19:52Speaker 2: I know, let's take the engine out and tweak this
- 19:55Speaker 2: and that, put.
- 19:56Speaker 1: A little something in here. Let's just quickly roll through
- 19:58Speaker 1: it because it very much is of Topspec hs really
- 20:02Speaker 1: ten speed auto sun roof, keyless entry, push buttons start,
- 20:06Speaker 1: eighteen inches led headlights MGS. What do they call it
- 20:10Speaker 1: the pilot's safety system? Yep, three sixty parking, twelve inch
- 20:16Speaker 1: digit dash, big sort of multimedia touchcreen, Well not big,
- 20:19Speaker 1: but it's a decent size wired Apple car Play, Android auto,
- 20:22Speaker 1: heated front seats, it's got technically on paper and in
- 20:25Speaker 1: photos it's got pretty good features, right and ones, I
- 20:30Speaker 1: reckon you should expect for fifty one thousand dollars yep.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But then this car is pretty much like my ass.
- 20:37Speaker 1: It looks great from a distance, it looks really good
- 20:40Speaker 1: in photos, but then you just get up real close
- 20:44Speaker 1: and there's just a big hole in the middle. It
- 20:48Speaker 1: was horrible, falls like I went to university. What am
- 20:52Speaker 1: I doing? Yeah, I don't think it's that bad. I
- 20:54Speaker 1: think for me, I'm going I'm big, harsh. Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Well, they've tried to make this good, but it's just
- 21:00Speaker 4: a lot of things as an EV owner that they
- 21:03Speaker 4: just haven't done well.
- 21:05Speaker 2: So just the way that it drives.
- 21:07Speaker 4: So the ten speed Audo that you mentioned, it's actually
- 21:10Speaker 4: it's an interesting gearbox because it has I think it's
- 21:13Speaker 4: a six speed auto for the internal combustion engine and
- 21:15Speaker 4: a four speed for the electric components. Right, so while
- 21:19Speaker 4: you're driving, it just has the most random fluctuations in
- 21:23Speaker 4: acceleration that.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Just don't feel normal or good.
- 21:28Speaker 4: So from a driving point of view, it just isn't
- 21:30Speaker 4: all that sort of good.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Before we get into that, the main sort of positive
- 21:35Speaker 1: or the main feature of having a hybrid car economy, right, Yeah,
- 21:39Speaker 1: that's why people would generally go down this track.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Yeah, look, you get economy out of it, but the
- 21:44Speaker 4: economy isn't spectacular. So they claim one point seven leaders
- 21:48Speaker 4: per one hundred k's but you don't get that because
- 21:50Speaker 4: you need to be able to just eat it.
- 21:52Speaker 1: By cookie retime. Paul talks and I get a bit disinterested.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Let me just be fatter. So yeah, they.
- 22:03Speaker 4: The few economy claim is only there if you're constantly
- 22:05Speaker 4: charging it.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It doesn't offer DC charging, So if.
- 22:08Speaker 4: You look at the Outland a PHEV or the Eclipse
- 22:10Speaker 4: Cross PF, they both do DC charging, So your only
- 22:12Speaker 4: option is a slow AC charge. So you've got to
- 22:16Speaker 4: be able to charge at work or at home.
- 22:18Speaker 1: It's a good five hours on this too.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Yeah, so, and that's if you're using a fast charger.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Zero to one hundred times of six point nine seconds
- 22:26Speaker 4: is fine. It's sort of nothing spectacular. The way that
- 22:30Speaker 4: it handles isn't great, so the body control isn't very good.
- 22:35Speaker 4: And the other thing that annoyed me as well, I
- 22:37Speaker 4: certainly couldn't figure out how to do it was to
- 22:38Speaker 4: schedule charging.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It is the bane of my existence. At home, we have.
- 22:43Speaker 4: The EV charger, and I want to charge off peak
- 22:45Speaker 4: so that it's cheaper. I could not see any way
- 22:49Speaker 4: to do that in this car. So and it was
- 22:52Speaker 4: the same story in the z SCV as well. You
- 22:54Speaker 4: just can't schedule charging.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So what does that mean? So you basically when you
- 22:57Speaker 1: get home, you plug it in, get about it. But
- 23:01Speaker 1: the scheduled charging will sort of say, hey, ten o'clock,
- 23:04Speaker 1: ten thirty at night, we're gonna start charging.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, so it'll all be plugged up, ready to go,
- 23:09Speaker 4: but it won't actually start charging un till then. So yeah, look,
- 23:13Speaker 4: I think that as their first attempt, it's fine, but
- 23:16Speaker 4: if it was me, I'd be spending on probably the Outlander.
- 23:19Speaker 4: I know the Outland is a bit more expensive, but
- 23:21Speaker 4: it's a much better car, a much better plug in hybrid,
- 23:24Speaker 4: And I just think that if if you really want
- 23:27Speaker 4: to get that full plug in hybrid experience, there are
- 23:30Speaker 4: much better cars.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Yeah even I mean for the price as well. The
- 23:33Speaker 1: thing that gets me is the price of this car,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and MG the.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Price is actually not bad compared to other plug in hybrids.
- 23:40Speaker 1: What about the RAP four, it's technically it's a little
- 23:42Speaker 1: bit more than the RAP four.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Red four is just a hybrid, So the RAD four
- 23:46Speaker 4: doesn't do electric driving, So this will do up to
- 23:49Speaker 4: seventy k's or sixty three k's of just EV driving.
- 23:52Speaker 4: RAD four will drive for two hundred meters on EV
- 23:55Speaker 4: before the battery runs out.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 4: So that's why these are expensive, because you're paying for
- 23:59Speaker 4: the battery. But it is the cut price version of
- 24:03Speaker 4: this system that you're going to have a much better
- 24:06Speaker 4: option of with other brands.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I think what MG do really well is they make
- 24:12Speaker 1: affordable cars, and they make affordable cars with fairly good
- 24:16Speaker 1: features at a price point of say the HS top
- 24:20Speaker 1: spec for instance, say it's around about thirty five forty thousand.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Between that point, you can kind of forgive it if
- 24:26Speaker 1: it's going to if the seats are a little bit
- 24:28Speaker 1: like weird and the driving position is a bit off,
- 24:31Speaker 1: because essentially you're getting a feedture packed pretty good family
- 24:36Speaker 1: car for under forty thousand dollars, but then you're looking
- 24:40Speaker 1: at nearly fifty two thousand for exactly the same thing,
- 24:44Speaker 1: but it's a plug in hybrid. I probably would skip
- 24:47Speaker 1: this car, to be honest, I'd go straight to an
- 24:50Speaker 1: HS just like a standard top spec rather than pay
- 24:54Speaker 1: shell out extra for the EV. I don't think there's
- 24:56Speaker 1: much point, I think economy wise. Personally, I was driving
- 25:00Speaker 1: around not really thinking about it too much, but I
- 25:02Speaker 1: remember getting to the end of sort of midway through
- 25:05Speaker 1: the second week going I pretty much feel like I'm
- 25:08Speaker 1: getting the same fuel economy as I would in a
- 25:10Speaker 1: normal car, and I was just doing normal.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Actually, it'd be worse because the problem with this is
- 25:16Speaker 4: if you're not charging it daily and taking advantage of
- 25:18Speaker 4: the big battery on board, you're then lugging around a
- 25:22Speaker 4: seventeen killer what hour battery.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But wouldn't it still be working in conjunction with each other.
- 25:27Speaker 4: It does still work as a hybrid, but you still
- 25:30Speaker 4: have the weight of that battery, so the advantage of
- 25:32Speaker 4: something like a RAV four hybrid, and why they're so
- 25:34Speaker 4: efficient is that comparatively, the battery is a sixteenth the
- 25:38Speaker 4: size of the battery in this and that means it's
- 25:41Speaker 4: a sixteenth the weight. So when you're driving a RAB
- 25:44Speaker 4: four hybrid around, every time you slow down, it charges
- 25:46Speaker 4: the battery and can then run the engine to charge
- 25:48Speaker 4: the battery. With this, if you do want to run
- 25:50Speaker 4: the engine to charge the battery, which again it doesn't
- 25:52Speaker 4: really do very well, you're then using a whole bunch
- 25:54Speaker 4: of fuel to charge the battery. So this is why
- 25:57Speaker 4: you have the ability to plug this up and then
- 25:59Speaker 4: when you drive it reduces your sort of fuel consumption.
- 26:02Speaker 4: But if you don't charge it, it will act just
- 26:05Speaker 4: like a hybrid, but a hybrid that's carrying around a
- 26:07Speaker 4: giant battery that's not being used. I think there is
- 26:10Speaker 4: an application for this type of thing, but you have
- 26:13Speaker 4: to be committed to charging it nightly or daily and
- 26:16Speaker 4: then you might get value out of it. But I
- 26:18Speaker 4: just think as a plug in hybrid, there are just
- 26:19Speaker 4: better options out there.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I completely agree. I think as I said before,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I think what MG do really well is affordable cars.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I don't think this is one of them. I did
- 26:29Speaker 1: get a I got an email right from a guard so.
- 26:32Speaker 2: You can show me one of those pictures.
- 26:34Speaker 1: We talk about that off air, please. Now just the
- 26:38Speaker 1: UK women's soccer team. What they do in the locker
- 26:40Speaker 1: room is their business. Now she she pictures off air. Now,
- 26:44Speaker 1: this is a question regarding the new Ranger, wanting to
- 26:48Speaker 1: know if it qualifies as a commercial vehicle instead of
- 26:52Speaker 1: an instant asset right off.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Okay, so no, that's a good question.
- 26:57Speaker 4: So there are two categories for the instant our set
- 27:00Speaker 4: right off. And this is not financial advice, by the way,
- 27:03Speaker 4: so we don't get.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Suit, got a couple barefoot invest what else.
- 27:06Speaker 4: There's two categories there, so one is up to I'm
- 27:10Speaker 4: gonna let me look this up while I'm talking. You've
- 27:12Speaker 4: got two different categories instant asset.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Right of this is where I eat my cookie.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty much.
- 27:20Speaker 4: So there's two categories there. One that goes up to
- 27:25Speaker 4: So the original cap was thirty thousand dollars. They increased
- 27:29Speaker 4: to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars for businesses with
- 27:31Speaker 4: turnover below five hundred million. And then they've got two
- 27:35Speaker 4: different categories. So you have fifty seven thousand, five hundred
- 27:38Speaker 4: and eighty one. This was for the twenty nineteen to
- 27:41Speaker 4: twenty twenty income tax year. It may have changed, and
- 27:43Speaker 4: then you have one hundred and fifty thousand for commercial vehicles. Now,
- 27:47Speaker 4: any vehicle that isn't a commercial vehicle, so that is
- 27:51Speaker 4: a vehicle that doesn't apply to the commercial vehicle rules,
- 27:54Speaker 4: can only claim up to fifty seven five eight one
- 27:57Speaker 4: for that income tax year.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Anything that is a commercial view can go up to
- 28:00Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Now, this is the definition of a commercial vehicle, so
- 28:06Speaker 4: it is a commercial vehicle is one that's capable of
- 28:10Speaker 4: carrying more than nine passengers or with a payload above
- 28:14Speaker 4: one thousand kilograms. So where this affects the ranger is
- 28:19Speaker 4: that if you are going for a higher spec ranger
- 28:21Speaker 4: for something like a Raptor for example, that's on the road,
- 28:24Speaker 4: like ninety thousand dollars or more, if it doesn't seep
- 28:28Speaker 4: more than nine, which doesn't legally, you could probably.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah, a couple of boys in the bag.
- 28:34Speaker 4: The payload is not above a thousand kilos, you can
- 28:37Speaker 4: only claim up to that fifty seven. Now, what some
- 28:39Speaker 4: brands are doing, so ram the guys that are doing Silverados.
- 28:43Speaker 4: They're offering a GVM upgrade that will give you payload
- 28:47Speaker 4: above a thousand kilos so that you can meet one
- 28:49Speaker 4: hundred and fifty thousand dollars threshold, and that means you
- 28:52Speaker 4: can claim all the way up to one hundred and
- 28:53Speaker 4: fifty grand.
- 28:54Speaker 2: So to answer the question on a Ranger, it depends
- 28:56Speaker 2: which ranger.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Some offer above a thousand kilos payload, they are then
- 29:01Speaker 4: classed as commercial vehicles and you can claim up to
- 29:03Speaker 4: one hundred and fifty k or if it's not, you
- 29:06Speaker 4: can only claim up to the passenger car limit.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Can you get parts to kind of make this have
- 29:10Speaker 1: a bigger.
- 29:11Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure you can. So my understanding of the
- 29:14Speaker 4: rules is you can upgrade the GVM, but you can't
- 29:17Speaker 4: downgrade the GVM, so that means that you can upgrade
- 29:21Speaker 4: it to meet a new tax threshold. So there are
- 29:23Speaker 4: probably companies out there that will do a GVM upgrade
- 29:26Speaker 4: for your Ranger to tip it over a thousand, because
- 29:27Speaker 4: some of them are very close, So depending on which
- 29:29Speaker 4: one you go for in the engine that's fitted, some
- 29:31Speaker 4: of them are like nine eighty or nine fifty, so
- 29:34Speaker 4: it is only a small change you need to make.
- 29:37Speaker 4: And the hundreds or thousands of dollars you need to
- 29:40Speaker 4: make that change could push you into that higher instant asset.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Right off bracket. So yeah, it is a little bit confusing,
- 29:46Speaker 2: but they are the rules there.
- 29:48Speaker 4: For commercial vehicles, it has to be more than nine
- 29:50Speaker 4: passengers or payload above a thousand kilos.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Have you taken possession of your Ranger yet?
- 29:55Speaker 5: No?
- 29:55Speaker 1: Not yet.
- 29:55Speaker 4: My Raptor is built currently waiting for a boat to
- 30:00Speaker 4: send it over here.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Oh really still not here? You know what will be
- 30:05Speaker 1: here pretty soon? What thousands of me could you imagine
- 30:09Speaker 1: if it like if it was here before you're wrapped up.
- 30:13Speaker 4: They're on a boat, but it was that was meant
- 30:15Speaker 4: to be here like March, soans technically late anyway.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Wow? What other car have you got? Y Tesla's coming.
- 30:22Speaker 4: According to the app my model Why is scheduled for
- 30:26Speaker 4: delivery between August eight and twenty two, so very soon.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Wow. What color did you get?
- 30:32Speaker 2: Gray?
- 30:33Speaker 1: Ah? A sexy shade of Elon tan. You saw that, guys,
- 30:40Speaker 1: you saw you saw Elon's holiday photos? Yes?
- 30:42Speaker 2: I did.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Wow, yeah he he. You can tell that guys working hard.
- 30:48Speaker 1: He hasn't been out of the office in a long time.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Well, the only time he is in the office is
- 30:52Speaker 4: when he's sleeping with his coworkers and getting them pregnant
- 30:55Speaker 4: because he's been busy doing that.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Yeah, he's into that. He's like really into pro creating.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I heard like he's like fully donating his sperm and yeah,
- 31:04Speaker 1: he's like he's like really into procreation and trying to
- 31:09Speaker 1: make as many humans as possible. There you go.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Now, if you hear us say this every single time
- 31:15Speaker 4: you listen to our great podcast but don't do anything
- 31:17Speaker 4: about it, make today the day that you actually do
- 31:20Speaker 4: something about it and leave us a rating on the
- 31:22Speaker 4: platform you're listening on. So we do appreciate that. On Apple.
- 31:26Speaker 4: I've been looking at Spotify as well. Heaps people have
- 31:28Speaker 4: left a rating there and a five star rating. By
- 31:30Speaker 4: the way, some bitch left us a one star rating.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I know who that is.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah, one of the many people you piss off forever.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Or Daniel, Daniel, Daniel wouldn't Daniel wouldn't do that.
- 31:42Speaker 5: As much as I hate your crude humor, I must
- 31:46Speaker 5: shave Drive show, I wouldn't leave you the one stair
- 31:51Speaker 5: raging that that pathetic Trevor left you. What shit?
- 31:57Speaker 7: Thank you, Daniel, I agree, but yeah, if you good,
- 32:00Speaker 7: please leave us a rating that would be great. And
- 32:02Speaker 7: if you do want to send us an email for
- 32:03Speaker 7: us to read out on the show or some feedback
- 32:06Speaker 7: or whatever, contact at the Drive Show dot com. That
- 32:08Speaker 7: are you just a warning that Gordy will delete anything
- 32:11Speaker 7: that's negative about him, so most of the emails we
- 32:13Speaker 7: get we can't read out. But yeah, contact at the
- 32:16Speaker 7: Drive Show dot com dot au. Anything you'd like us
- 32:19Speaker 7: to talk about or spend more time on, we would
- 32:22Speaker 7: love to hear from you.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Sorry, I'm just going through the emails right now. I
- 32:25Speaker 1: probably should have done this pre show something. Someone was
- 32:29Speaker 1: giving you a shit about your selling off your someone's
- 32:33Speaker 1: giving you sit about selling off your hsvs to pay
- 32:35Speaker 1: for your bitcoin problem. What else have we got here?
- 32:41Speaker 2: I'm so glad you're prepared.
