Latest / Easy Double podcast / EDP42: Valencia Marathon / US Cross country trials
Transcript
- 0:14Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 42.
- 0:19This is as close to a live record as we're ever going to
- 0:22get, given that if the Valencia Marathon finished about, well,
- 0:27some people are probably still running.
- 0:28But the the people we were following, we're just finishing
- 0:31in the past half hour or so. So be prepared for a lack of
- 0:35analysis. But we'll we'll have to go deep
- 0:37on the opinions. So welcome to the show.
- 0:40Owen Smith, how you doing post long run?
- 0:42You've managed to squeeze it in somewhere.
- 0:44Yeah. As soon as long as you finish, I
- 0:47am jumped at the door for 90 minutes in that it was actually
- 0:51it was raining, but it wasn't too heavy.
- 0:52It was just a nice sort of sprinkle rain and it was sort of
- 0:56like, I got, like, wet and lucky enough that, like, you have to
- 0:59jump in the shower, put your clothes on because it's just
- 1:02like, splattered at the back. So I have to do nowadays, yeah,
- 1:06because the country roads are so dirty.
- 1:07But I'm not feeling good. Yeah.
- 1:09Been a good week. What's temperature saying out
- 1:12there this morning? It's actually humid enough out
- 1:15here today. It's 11°, feels like 7.
- 1:22That's not bad for mid-december. Yeah, it's, yeah, It's weird.
- 1:26It's open. Like you get a few cold days and
- 1:28then it picks up. Yeah, can't complain.
- 1:32Yeah, good. Welcome to the show on this fine
- 1:34Sunday evening. Dean Menzies, how are you?
- 1:38Good mate. Doing well, yeah, on mute
- 1:44because the kids are currently screaming, but otherwise doing
- 1:46all right. Yeah, we're working with tight
- 1:50agenda here as well, aren't we trying to squeeze in before the
- 1:52finale of the F1 season. So I guess before we get into
- 1:56the run and who do we think is going to end up with the the
- 1:59crown there? I'm hoping Lando and Max crash
- 2:05caught, you know, the first turn and then Oscar wins.
- 2:09I can see Max's P1. It maxes in pole.
- 2:12Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:14I can see him backing up the field and just causing chaos
- 2:17because he sort of needs chaos, doesn't he?
- 2:19Yeah, like, yeah, he's not going to drive.
- 2:22Away with it because I'd be no point.
- 2:23Because he needs, he needs Lando to finish below third.
- 2:26Is it? Yeah.
- 2:28So I think, I think the last two times it's been a three horse
- 2:31race, the person in 3rd has actually won it.
- 2:35So that favours piastry. But I just can't see land on
- 2:39Iris not winning from here. So I want Max Saraszko to win,
- 2:45but I think Lando's going to win.
- 2:48I wouldn't be surprised if he's like 4th or 5th after the first
- 2:51corner because he's just going to absolutely tiptoe into that
- 2:54land though, isn't he? Yeah, but you can't blame him
- 2:58either. Yeah, he knows he's got like, if
- 3:04not the best, equal, best car on the grid.
- 3:06So I knows he needs to do is put it in the top three.
- 3:09He just needs to stay out of trouble.
- 3:11So he'd probably get a fat check for that as well.
- 3:14What do you for one on it? Not half.
- 3:18Although I think they're on like massive salaries as well aren't
- 3:21they? So maybe like the actual prize
- 3:23money isn't that good in comparison to the salary.
- 3:26They paid a rather large amount regardless.
- 3:29I thought they had fairly large bonus parts of their contract,
- 3:34like based on performance, So not that they're the whole
- 3:37thing's large, but yeah. Two things we won't be speaking
- 3:42about is cricket and or Premier League football.
- 3:45Liverpool and Mohamed Saleh, so we'll just slip past them.
- 3:50Yeah, if I was on for that episode where you guys are
- 3:52speaking about cricket, I would have just turned it off after
- 3:55freaking like 2 seconds. Cricket isn't a thing in Ireland
- 3:58but. We can turn it off.
- 4:01Now, but the World Cup is right in Ireland.
- 4:05It's actually that you guys make it.
- 4:07For what Soccer? Yeah.
- 4:10Well, we'll see in March. Yeah.
- 4:13OK. So you're in one of those?
- 4:15Qualified to play, we have to play Denmark and then if we beat
- 4:19Denmark, we play some other random team.
- 4:22I don't know, but we always lose Denmark, so we'll see.
- 4:28Is it decided which group you will go into if you make it all
- 4:31the way? Which one is?
- 4:32That it's like Mexico, so Africa and then some other shit team so
- 4:37we could. Have half a chance?
- 4:39Yeah, if we actually get you to group, we could win the World
- 4:40Cup. It's coming home.
- 4:45America's drawer isn't too bad. It's very good.
- 4:47And you see America's response to it, Yeah.
- 4:51Cheeky bastards. Just trolling us.
- 4:53They're like just basically saying that like we'll be
- 4:57shocked if we don't win top out group given we've got Australia
- 5:01in it and I think it might be Paraguay and then the winner of
- 5:03like Turkey and Kosovo and someone else, but basically.
- 5:07You are pretty shit. Your women's team is better than
- 5:09your lad's team. Oh yeah, yeah, no, this is true.
- 5:14Yeah. Because nearly a shit is island
- 5:16I think. Because the US, the home nation,
- 5:23they get seeded in the top part. So like they were more concerned
- 5:28about who was going to come out of Part 2 because there's a few
- 5:30dangerous teams in there and Australia were in Part 2.
- 5:33So they were happy about that, but I don't think they were
- 5:36quite considering that Australia would also be happy that they
- 5:39got USA as their per seat. 100%. How?
- 5:45Well, good fun. Hi.
- 5:47So we do have some running to speak about.
- 5:49Remarkably, it's been Valencia Marathon, it's been the US cross
- 5:53country selection trials for the world cross country in January
- 5:56as well. So all sorts of things going on.
- 6:00I reckon we speak about the stuff over in the USA first, so
- 6:04then we can dedicate a lot of time to Valencia if that's OK
- 6:08with you boys. Think you were tuning in.
- 6:11Was it like overnight last night for us, Dean, and Saturday night
- 6:15for you, maybe? Yeah, it was, I think it was on
- 6:20like 9 around 9:00 ten o'clock for me.
- 6:24And yeah, the coverage I am, I was just scrolling on Instagram
- 6:29and then I seen, I think it was like Serious Mag put up like,
- 6:32oh, you can watch it here. And I thought it was going to be
- 6:34up behind that like flow track paywall.
- 6:36But when I went into it, it was like free and the coverage was
- 6:40genuinely the best coverage I've ever seen of like a running
- 6:44event. Like now, bear in mind this is
- 6:47not on the track. Like it's actually around the
- 6:49golf course. And it was actually proper cross
- 6:51country as well. To be fair for Americans, it
- 6:54wasn't on some pancake flat, bone dry golf course.
- 6:57There was actually hills. It was mucky.
- 6:59And they still managed to like film it, like record it
- 7:03perfectly. Like those big massive like pine
- 7:05trees around it looked so so cool.
- 7:08The muck that the that the lead car that went parallel with the
- 7:12course was constantly chunks of mud, but you're getting those
- 7:16chunks in high depth like it was very well.
- 7:19Yet the commentators kept on saying, oh sorry, there's muck
- 7:22from the Gator. But yeah, it was savage.
- 7:27When I was listening to one of the previews of this, they were
- 7:29referring to like, athletes chances as whether they were
- 7:33good mothers or not. Yeah, he's a mother.
- 7:37But on the way they done it was, I think it was like high school
- 7:40cross country as well. So then all of the kids could
- 7:43stay around and watch the pros run, which is just good for
- 7:47athletics. Like, it's the way it should be
- 7:49done. So yeah, USA doing all right.
- 7:54Yeah, and they had the masters afterwards.
- 7:56I think it was a full day of it, which is very clever.
- 7:59And they also set it up such that the the trials 1st 6 past
- 8:03the posts were selected into their national team.
- 8:07And given that America's hosting the world champs next month, it
- 8:14was, yeah, made for an exciting race because you you knew
- 8:19exactly what to watch for and who to watch for.
- 8:21And really, it was, I don't know.
- 8:24I don't know about you guys, but it was who was going to win it
- 8:26and then who was going to finish six or inside the top 6.
- 8:32I can recap the results if you like.
- 8:35Start with the women's race. Yeah.
- 8:40So the winner was Wayne Kiladi, second was Katie Izzo, third
- 8:47Edna Kirgat, 4th Carissa Schweitzer, 5th was Emily
- 8:53Venters and six was Grace Hartman.
- 8:56Maybe some notice some names just outside that were Ali
- 9:00Ostrander who I think is multiple time NCAA winner and
- 9:05returning from injury was 8th and then Parker Valby who you
- 9:09follow I think Ryan in 10th. And the way this race planned
- 9:14out, it was like it was a big group at the start and then the
- 9:18three women at the top when he, Kaladi, Katie Izzo and Nicaragua
- 9:22sort of broke away, and then there's a big group with the
- 9:25other girls. And yeah, it was good running.
- 9:29And Grace Hartman, she came sixth in NCAA's, which was
- 9:34pretty good now that she can represent the USA in the World
- 9:38Cross Country Championships. So yeah, it was good.
- 9:41Don't you like, isn't it impressive just how strong the
- 9:44NCAA, we'll probably talk about this as well when we talk about
- 9:47the men's, but like the NCAA athletes that were that
- 9:51competed, that were competitive in the NCAA's but then very
- 9:55competitive in this like it's the the level of competition is
- 9:59outrageous now. Did you see there was a thread
- 10:03on let's run regarding where Cam Myers with the finished in the
- 10:07NCAA cross country the other week?
- 10:10And some people are like putting them saying he could have won
- 10:14and stuff but haptoms bloody sub 27 minute 10K.
- 10:17Like I don't care how fast Cam's able to close, he's not.
- 10:21He's not there if it's 27 minutes fast.
- 10:23Yeah, no, no way. Not in my book.
- 10:26But it wasn't 27 minutes fast. It was.
- 10:28Well, yeah. So do you think he hangs with
- 10:30them? I think he's there.
- 10:33He's there thereabouts, no? I don't know.
- 10:36But he didn't know specific training for.
- 10:38If he's actually specifically training for 10K cross country,
- 10:41he's up there. I mean, we, but we can jump to
- 10:44the men's now, but like, did you, the guy that finished
- 10:47second in the NCAA men's took it to this field and absolutely
- 10:51sordid guys that were in the top five or six in the world champs
- 10:563 months ago, like just ran them off his like just ran them off
- 11:01their legs. Like it was, I don't know.
- 11:03I just yeah. And, and had Tom's, I think had
- 11:07Tom, we're at Bathurst, competed for El Eritrea and I think he
- 11:12was maybe 17th and he's come on a lot since then, like 17th at
- 11:16world crosses. Legit like I think Kyle was the
- 11:19first Aussie maybe he's like low 20s.
- 11:21So like, I don't know, I'm just all about the NCAA system, but
- 11:29yeah, I mean, Cam, Cam's legit in the right race, but I don't
- 11:32know, these guys are so aerobically fit and little I
- 11:36don't know. Mothers.
- 11:39Mothers indeed, But yeah, in the women's getting back to the
- 11:44women's race, I think the top two were pretty dominant.
- 11:46Hey, like they Wayne Cloudy sort of said did made some moves, but
- 11:52she was she was pretty. She looked pretty comfy the
- 11:55whole way and then just broke away just when she got a bit of
- 11:57a gap just to to win it. But yeah, it was probably more
- 12:03for those four through 10 where there was a bit of excitement as
- 12:07to who was going to hold on. There was some criticism I think
- 12:12wasn't there over the selection of where the trials were held.
- 12:16Like it's good, it's a good spectacle for us to watch these
- 12:19like top athletes run round in the mud and like slug it out.
- 12:23But I think they're anticipating that the actual world cross
- 12:26country in Florida might be a bit more favourable conditions.
- 12:29So they're saying like, well, it's like comparing apples with
- 12:32oranges if you're looking at how people run in the mud versus how
- 12:37they run on flat. But it's more fun I think as
- 12:40well at the same time. That's sort of what they done in
- 12:45Ireland this year because the Europeans are going to be flat.
- 12:50They put the Irish national champs around football pitches
- 12:53but then a piss trained so it got really muddy.
- 12:55So if it wasn't raining it would have been a sort of a mirror
- 12:59image of what Portugal is going to be like.
- 13:03But like, if you're good in the mock, you're going to be half
- 13:07decent when it's like undulating.
- 13:10So yeah, I don't know. Shall I recap the men's race or
- 13:15the results quickly? And then we talk about it.
- 13:18So the winner was Parker Wolf. Second was Rocky Hansen, who was
- 13:21second at the NCAA cross two weeks ago.
- 13:26Wesley Kip 2 was third, Mohammed Mohammed was fourth, Nico Young
- 13:315th and Grand Blanc's 6th. Yeah, Liam Murphy and Paul
- 13:38Chulimo weren't too far behind the 7th and 8th, and there are a
- 13:43few other like Sean Mcgaudy, Drew Hunter, Cooper Tier who
- 13:50were also not too far off in pretty stacked field.
- 13:56So how did how did that one play out then because I think the bit
- 14:00of an upset there maybe from the winner.
- 14:02So yeah, you, I. I didn't see him.
- 14:05I only seen the bit where it was like, umm, rock.
- 14:07There was three of them pulling away.
- 14:08Rocky Hansen was like try pushing the pace and it was my
- 14:11keep to and and Parker Wolf or just sitting behind and keep to
- 14:17I think slipped and sort of lost ground.
- 14:20And then Parker Wolf just looked so good the whole way around and
- 14:24you just knew who's gonna OK Rocky hands and Blake for Rocky
- 14:28Hands. And like, what age did I get?
- 14:29Is he even 20 yet? Yeah, and I think didn't they
- 14:33mention, I swear I need to check this.
- 14:35So he was like 100th. He was like injured or something
- 14:37going into NCAA last year and then it's gone from that to 2nd.
- 14:41Like he was undefeated other than when had Tom got in two
- 14:44weeks ago Like. What would you rather?
- 14:47Would you rather run like no Rocky Hansen gets to represent
- 14:50his country in cross country, or would you have rather run that
- 14:54Boston Indoor 5K and maybe run like 1315 like I'd represent the
- 15:00country every day, all day long, 100%.
- 15:03Yeah, I think they ran. What did they run, 13?
- 15:05Was it 1315 or 1305? I think they ran.
- 15:09Oh, that's a good question. Let me check.
- 15:11You're talking about the in there.
- 15:12Where have Tom won in there? Was like a dive.
- 15:15To the line. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:16And you say, have Tom got him? Yeah.
- 15:20But I point something of a second, yeah.
- 15:24I think they might have said the commentators at like Hanson's 21
- 15:27and Wolf's 22 something, something like that.
- 15:30Yeah. But yeah, it was that Rocky
- 15:35Hanson, who I think was just. Did you hear his interview after
- 15:39NCAA where the Let's Run guys asked him what if he'll run this
- 15:43race? And he said because he was the
- 15:46first American in the NCAA cross, there was a lot of talk
- 15:49about non-us athletes in the NCAA's.
- 15:52And yeah, they basically said that he will.
- 15:56He said, yes, I'm thinking I will.
- 15:57He's like, I'll chat to my coach obviously, but I think I'll race
- 16:00it, which he must be very glad he did.
- 16:02He went, he led them through the 1st Ki think the first K was 245
- 16:07and he was already in front and he just kept the hammer hammer
- 16:10down and within 4 or 5K there was the top 6.
- 16:15So those that finished in the top six stayed in the top six.
- 16:17Liam Murphy I think closed on Grand Blancs a bit, but he just
- 16:20had too much ground to make up in the last few KS.
- 16:25But like the likes of when you assume like Nico Young and Grand
- 16:28Blancs are in there, you're like they're just gonna hang with.
- 16:31But it was really good. They had the usual 2
- 16:34commentators but then they had Galen Brough with special
- 16:36comments and he mentioned because Parker Wolf is training
- 16:42with Do you know what the training group is Swish Swish TC
- 16:46Is that just a rebrand of the Oregon project or what?
- 16:50I think all the. All them boys are training with
- 16:52Mike Smith, yeah. That's it.
- 16:55And so is that who? So who's Nico Young training
- 16:59with? Mike Smith, Yeah.
- 17:01She's not under the Nike badge, no.
- 17:04That's right. So I think they were saying that
- 17:08Parker Wolf's been keeping up with Niko Young in all of his
- 17:12workout. So basically like he's super
- 17:14fit. And then, you know, Parker
- 17:15Wolf's got wheels. And so it's sort of.
- 17:19They were. Hinting that he's one to watch,
- 17:21even though I think Ryan, you were saying some of the
- 17:23commentary ahead of the race was that like other commentators
- 17:28didn't think that he would be able to hang with the likes of
- 17:31the more credentialed athletes like Niko Young and Grand Blanks
- 17:36didn't. I'm sure Parker Wolf won that
- 17:385th Ave. mile, you know, a few weeks back, like just after the
- 17:42the end after World championships, there was that
- 17:44road mile in New York. I'm sure he won that as well.
- 17:48And. That was him, not Ethan Strand.
- 17:50I always get them too. Yeah, I think.
- 17:52So, but yeah, that was. Saying he was one to watch.
- 17:56And yeah, like you said on he was just looking so good.
- 17:59But yeah, Rocky Hanson basically just continued to apply
- 18:02pressure. And then you knew it was taking
- 18:04having an impact because they're all strung out six in a row.
- 18:07And then, yeah, they're in the order that it finished was who
- 18:11he dropped. Basically.
- 18:13He just continued to drop guys, run them off his wheel, just
- 18:15running. And like, who has the confidence
- 18:18to do that? It's one thing to be competitive
- 18:20in the NCAA system, but like you weren't that good at NCAA two
- 18:24years ago and now you're running the guys that are some of the
- 18:27best in the world. You know, you're just taking it
- 18:29to them because and it's hard to gauge your effort over cross
- 18:33country. Like you would have noticed
- 18:35this, right? Oh, and like, at what point do
- 18:36you think your legs are going to give out from underneath you and
- 18:39this guy's just running them all off his off their feet?
- 18:43It's phenomenal. I was.
- 18:45Thinking his legs were going to give out after AK after his pre
- 18:48race ritual that is so. Annoying as Aldo, but I don't
- 18:54think I could have done any. I think I still would have
- 18:56finished or I finished I saw. Something on my on my Instagram
- 19:01or something like that where someone posted 2 Gnomeo shots as
- 19:06a like as a like, I'm going to like send it.
- 19:10Yeah. And I thought of you but for
- 19:13contact. Was for context, I took two
- 19:16Namio shots before the national cross country and then we were
- 19:21having a chat with Namio and I told him and he was like no, you
- 19:25shouldn't do that. Basically.
- 19:27So for everyone taking on me out, well, it's one shot before
- 19:30the race well. So they do say on their website
- 19:34it was the fine print because I think you can take 2, but you
- 19:37take one the night before and then one three hours before and
- 19:40it just got lost in translation, perhaps one.
- 19:44For clarity, 1/3 hours before but one afterwards before you go
- 19:49to bed as like a recovery thing. Sorry, good job this isn't paid
- 19:55promo. I was.
- 19:59I was asking like ChatGPT what would happen what's like the
- 20:03residual effects if you take two shots pre intense exercise and
- 20:08stuff and it was basically same for like moderate to high
- 20:12intensity efforts as in like a session or a race.
- 20:16Then it's going to flood your system with lactate that you
- 20:21won't be able to clear. Like it's basically just going
- 20:23to bring on that lactate buffer a lot earlier.
- 20:28But it said it would have a place.
- 20:30So it potentially has a place for like sprinters who are doing
- 20:33like 60 meter reps and stuff. That's so good, a guy I.
- 20:37Did feel so shit straight from the off as well.
- 20:40You said that in your recap. You said yeah.
- 20:43I was like what the hell? But look, you live in your
- 20:45learn. I'll know for next time.
- 20:49I was going to say, oh, you know about the, you're talking about
- 20:51the end quality of the NCAA field and stuff with this Rocky
- 20:54Hanson. Did you hear that?
- 20:56Jonathan Gaul had a look at like all the fields and because we
- 21:00were talking about the getting overseas athletes into the NCAA
- 21:05system and the controversy around it and stuff, he looked
- 21:09at like an All Star American team.
- 21:11So like the best American born people across the whole of the
- 21:15results and put them in their own team, how they would fare
- 21:19against the top colleges who've got like all the African
- 21:23athletes in there. And they still wouldn't have won
- 21:25if you just take the best Americans from all over the
- 21:28division, which is, like, kind of crazy, Yeah.
- 21:33Yeah, it's a pretty high level, but then is it helping to breed
- 21:38guys like Rocky Hanson to and the likes of Nico Young and
- 21:43Graham Blanks who can then take on the world?
- 21:46It's not. They're the they're the good
- 21:49guys. It's the guy that's not getting
- 21:51the chance that would improve if he got into the system that's
- 21:55fallen and like them guys are good.
- 21:58They have to hold their own. It's the other ones, Yeah,
- 22:01exactly. Yeah, that's, and that's, I
- 22:02think that was the flag they're flying is all the people that
- 22:05don't get the assistance that maybe could deserve it.
- 22:08But you hope maybe there's a middle ground where it keeps the
- 22:11competition really good. But there's a pathway and that's
- 22:13what you see like in the AFL system and these other ones, you
- 22:17know, where they have the the feeder clubs and you get the
- 22:20academies, like your connected academies for local players,
- 22:24something like that anyway. Do we do the suitcase?
- 22:31Yeah, I didn't say. I didn't say these, other than
- 22:33the sprints, the finishes, I just sort of reels on those.
- 22:36Did you watch those on? No, I didn't.
- 22:38But, well, just the women's top. I think the.
- 22:41Two qualify. The top 2 is Gracie Morris, who
- 22:45ran 619 and then Sage her to Clacker ran 622.
- 22:50Sage is a part of ON, and she is Her partner is Joe Clacker,
- 22:56who's the marathoner. Yeah, I'm not sure how this race
- 22:59played out, but yeah, that's one or two.
- 23:02And then the men's top 2 or Eaton Strand to run 525 and then
- 23:07Wes Porter, who ran 526. So a pretty close finish there.
- 23:14It. Will be because this will set up
- 23:17the mixed relay team which I feel like starting to gain a bit
- 23:20of momentum now. Right?
- 23:21So America will seemingly be sending a strong team.
- 23:25Sounds like Australia is based on the fact that Cam's
- 23:29preference to do that rather than that he won out cross
- 23:32country. But it's still in the 2K.
- 23:34And then I think the UK field was very strong, wasn't it?
- 23:39It was like a dive to the line. But that's only.
- 23:41EUR So they might pick a different one.
- 23:45Oh, so that didn't result. Is it all discretionary?
- 23:48Is it? Yeah, so there's an interview
- 23:51coming out next week and that person has put their hand up for
- 23:55Worlds. Yeah.
- 23:59So he's put his hand up. But yeah, it's just up to them
- 24:02to pick then. An interview with us.
- 24:05Yes. Oh yeah, you were.
- 24:07You were hard on the tools on Friday evening, grinding out a
- 24:11second interview for us. Yeah, Overtime.
- 24:15So you were going to put that out?
- 24:17When? In the week?
- 24:18We'll put it out, yeah. During the week for the for the
- 24:20people, we say who it is or leave them guessing.
- 24:25Up to you. You were the host.
- 24:28I will leave them guessing OK. I'm excited, yeah, that it's
- 24:37hard to comment on body composition, particularly women,
- 24:40without sounding like a Dick. But my observation, because I've
- 24:44seen a clip of the finish of that women's one and this Gracie
- 24:48Morris, who won it, she's built. She looks a bit stronger than
- 24:55perhaps a typical like track athlete would.
- 24:58And like, I was just amazed to see that she's running away from
- 25:01Sage Hair Clacker, who's like one of the best 800 meter
- 25:04runners in the world at the minute.
- 25:07I don't know who this Gracie Morris was prior to this.
- 25:10But I think it just got like when you're in cross country,
- 25:12you can actually carry a bit more weight because it makes you
- 25:15stronger in the muck, whereas on the track you're sort of caught
- 25:19out because you don't really need that leg strength to get
- 25:22you out of the muck. So the Let's Run boys, how to
- 25:27go, how to go with some of the female marathoners there last
- 25:31time and they got in trouble and then they started calling like
- 25:33eating strands small or something like that.
- 25:37But yeah, well, you. See, with like Jake Smith, he
- 25:41obviously looks a lot stronger than what he was and he's still
- 25:45clearly got like the same aerobic capacity and everything,
- 25:48so. Have you ever seen the it's like
- 25:53a original flow track video of the the first the American to go
- 26:00under 27 minutes for 10K and he was quite AI think it was named
- 26:05Chris Solinsky. And he was like a pretty like
- 26:08muscular dude. And you would think as you're
- 26:10getting towards the 10K, it would be the lighter, more
- 26:14efficient looking guys, you know, like like light frame,
- 26:17like Hab Tom or someone. And this guy was pretty powerful
- 26:20built, but as you would think more like an 800 meter guy.
- 26:24And yeah, he, he closed in like 2 minutes for the last 800.
- 26:28The race was set up for Galen Rut and he, yeah, he beats him.
- 26:32And yeah, just absolute monster. So then there's all different,
- 26:36different chassis that that can get the job done.
- 26:40Yeah, clearly with everything there's like best practices and
- 26:44common like theories, but then there's always outliers here and
- 26:47there who will just defy the rules, isn't it?
- 26:51Right then let's get to Valencia because I reckon people might
- 26:54have pressed play on this scene that we weren't speaking about
- 26:57and just went straight to this point.
- 26:59So welcome to the show. Those who cared less about the
- 27:03US stuff. I guess the only place to start
- 27:07is with the women given what happened.
- 27:09So the race results. It was won by Jocelyn Jackos,
- 27:14guy in 214 flat, followed by Perez.
- 27:17Cheer Cheer, who's the reigning world champion in two 1443 and
- 27:22actually a Belgian lady also made it on onto the podium with
- 27:26the 22038. Then further down the field just
- 27:31Stenson is the new Australian marathon record holder.
- 27:36She finished in fifth place overall and ran 2/21/25 to take
- 27:409 seconds off Sinead Divers previous national record.
- 27:45I guess no, I'll go through them further and then we can unpack
- 27:49this. So Isabel Back Doyle finished
- 27:527th in two 2335. Natasha Wilson.
- 27:56This is a name I've never heard of until this weekend of Great
- 27:59Britain finished 10th in 2/24/22.
- 28:03And then further down the list there was a couple of American
- 28:05ladies and a few more Brits. Jen Gregson was in 22nd and 2:28
- 28:10on her return. So as we spoke about in the chat
- 28:16earlier, there was a bit of chaos going on whilst I was
- 28:19trying to watch this, but did you see much of like kind of how
- 28:24did Jocelyn Jeff Koskai come to run away from Jeff Church here
- 28:28and win by 43 seconds? There it was.
- 28:31Actually very good. The which one is the Adidas Ali?
- 28:35Adidas Ali came second. Which one is she?
- 28:39So she was actually like pushing the pace.
- 28:42And the other one was was a cause guy.
- 28:46She was, she was actually sort of falling back.
- 28:49And I need to know the names of these people because I'm going
- 28:53to get them mixed up. Basically, both of them had
- 28:57pacemakers, and the one who ended up finished second, her
- 29:01pacemaker dropped out and she was pushing the pace.
- 29:05She actually took the lead. So then the one who ended up
- 29:08winning her pacemaker dropped back a little bit.
- 29:11Before that, she missed a bottle and they said they shared
- 29:14bottles. Like it actually was really,
- 29:16really good to see. And then, yeah, you're just
- 29:19finished strong. Who ended up when the Jeff?
- 29:24Because guy who had the pacemaker, he was, he was trying
- 29:28to wave Jeff Churchill through, wasn't he?
- 29:31Because he was like basically saying I'm I'm waiting for her
- 29:33because he's like a training partner or something of us.
- 29:36So he was kind of when it got down to the race, it was like,
- 29:40no, I'm not willing to help you and continue pushing from the
- 29:43front if you're going to like drop my teammate.
- 29:45Basically, I'm hanging around from a teammate, but you want
- 29:49Jeff. Church, It was really weird,
- 29:50like she made a big surge and she opened up a little bit of a
- 29:52gap which lasted like 5 seconds and then she just like dropped
- 29:55back again. But yeah, like what's 214?
- 30:00Cause the guy around which is like phenomenal. 214 dead.
- 30:07Yeah, I think it was a world lead, wasn't it?
- 30:09For, I'm pretty sure female world lead fastest time this
- 30:12year. Yeah, pretty outrageous given
- 30:17we're in December as well. It's going to end up being the
- 30:20fastest time of 2025, isn't it? Yeah, Yeah, there's not many.
- 30:25Marathons left in the year. All right, well let's get to it
- 30:30then. Jess Stenson, new Australian
- 30:32record. Like what the hell?
- 30:34I will eat my words and probably my heart because like in with
- 30:40all due respect to Jess, I just didn't see this coming.
- 30:42I knew she was going to have a stab at it.
- 30:44I knew Izzy was going to have a stab at it.
- 30:46I thought Izzy, if she didn't do it, would certainly finish ahead
- 30:50of Jess. I thought when I see in like the
- 30:53splits early on that they were kind of like both on pace and
- 30:55stuff. Yeah.
- 30:57I was just amazed to see Jess like hold on to it, she is the
- 31:02the queen of Australian distance runner of Australian marathoner
- 31:07isn't it? Crazy how like.
- 31:09Two years ago. She was just about on the parrot
- 31:12or a year ago she was just about on that Paris Olympic team and
- 31:15now she has the Aussie record. Like she's ranked number one
- 31:20now. So not fair play to her.
- 31:21Again, phenomenal run. I just the course looks amazing,
- 31:24like the weather was decent and she had a big group with her the
- 31:29whole time. I felt sorry for your one who
- 31:31was in 3rd. She was like running solo for
- 31:34most of it. Most of the race.
- 31:37I don't know how but yeah, but. Yeah.
- 31:41Fast, just Aussie all time and she's actually Aussie.
- 31:46I was, yeah. What I mean, not to say that
- 31:50she's going to retire next week, but she is 38.
- 31:53So like, what a way to kind of do, do something outrageous at
- 31:58the end of your career that like, she probably will be happy
- 32:00to retire now tomorrow. And she went over solo, didn't
- 32:06she? She left her kids in Australia.
- 32:09I'm pretty sure I heard that. Yeah, I was.
- 32:11Listening to Yeah podcast and she didn't know someone
- 32:14mentioned that she's going to party tonight, hopefully before
- 32:18she heads back home to continue being a mum.
- 32:23I was looking at her splits and her timings and stuff, she's
- 32:26pretty like dead on the whole way.
- 32:29And but then when she had 40K split, because the the app gives
- 32:35like a bit of a predicted finish time at each time in math.
- 32:39And at 40K it said her predicted time was 22140, which would have
- 32:44seen him miss the record by 6 seconds.
- 32:48And then if you do the math like backwards from that.
- 32:51So that was on 3/21 pace to get to that point.
- 32:55And then she's that means she's closed the last two point 2K and
- 32:58314 pace. So she's absolutely hammered at
- 33:01home. Yeah, because I kept watching.
- 33:05Every time you would follow anyone on the track, it would
- 33:07give them predicted finish time. And every time you would toggle
- 33:10over Jess's icon, you would see the same 221, you know, mid to
- 33:17high. It was normally like high and so
- 33:20you knew it was in the ballpark. But.
- 33:23Normally the MA normally like how many times have you tracked
- 33:27someone in the marathon and at some point it starts to go the,
- 33:30the, the, the average time on the splits start to go out and
- 33:34it, it only seems to get harder. It's not often that you see it
- 33:37all come down. So you, you know, you half, you
- 33:40know, you're normally expecting it not to go well.
- 33:43So when it's getting, but then when it's getting closer and
- 33:45closer, you start to think, could it be?
- 33:46Could it be? So yeah.
- 33:48What a sweat like I. Think up to 30 K like it's sort
- 33:52of irrelevant because like I think that 30 to 35 teams can
- 33:56change like so much you can just pop and then it's a long way
- 33:59home. So like until 30K you can't
- 34:01really say. No, yeah, that was very, very
- 34:06cool. And she did.
- 34:07Did you hear her chatting on the Inside Running podcast?
- 34:10I think she she mentioned like, I haven't got a huge ceiling,
- 34:14like I don't, I can't run a a particularly fast half marathon
- 34:18or haven't necessarily posted a half past half fast half
- 34:24marathon. But that 321 pace at Australian
- 34:26record pace did feel comfortable enough, or at least she hoped it
- 34:30did. And so and then you could see in
- 34:33those splits couldn't knew how even it was just sitting like
- 34:37just that perfect sit in that nice like you say in a nice
- 34:40course on a nice day, like how how careful you need to be to
- 34:45literally run on that limit for, you know, 2 hours and 20
- 34:49minutes. She.
- 34:51Went through halfway in 7039. Like what's her?
- 34:56PB. Half marathon PB Yeah, I think
- 35:01it's like about 69 flat, I would have thought.
- 35:04Yeah. So she's.
- 35:05Like, there's not much difference there coming through
- 35:06halfway in the marathon. Yeah, it must because her and
- 35:11Izzy ran about halfway together or something and I at 10K the
- 35:16commentator picked up, he was like, oh, the Australian girls
- 35:19are split 10K and 3333, which is dead on the Aussie record pace.
- 35:25So it must have been because I think initially maybe the app is
- 35:29just like kind of slow to update and reflect kind of what's going
- 35:32on truly. But it looked as though Jess had
- 35:34like ran off on Izzy rather than Izzy had fallen back.
- 35:37But the reality of it probably is like Jess just stayed on pace
- 35:42and Izzy probably started to drift a little.
- 35:45And that must have been like kind of so hard for Izzy to know
- 35:49that she was starting to hurt. And seeing Jess stay strong, I
- 35:53mean, obviously I'm the very good friends and she would be
- 35:56made-up for her, but she obviously wanted that for
- 35:58herself as well. Where did Jess?
- 36:02Finish overall. 5th What? Wow, that's yeah.
- 36:08Is that a nice payday for her? Actually, isn't it?
- 36:12Yeah, I don't know if it. Pays like some of the majors do,
- 36:15but I think it still be pretty solid.
- 36:18She's is that she's in a six girl.
- 36:21Yeah, she probably got looked after nicely for a new
- 36:27Australian record there. It's weird.
- 36:29Because she wears Lululemon but she wears ASIC runners.
- 36:32Isn't it something like that? She might get 2 bucks to.
- 36:37Pay days. Easy double payday.
- 36:44I seen is he done a post something along the lines of
- 36:46like fourth time in 223? Kind of like not really what I
- 36:50wanted, but I'm going to take a break and stuff.
- 36:52So it won't be as he's last attempt at it, will it?
- 36:57Yeah, I was thinking like it does it set up for a nice light
- 37:00trilogy. This is made perhaps Part 2 to
- 37:03not to, you know, look beyond the current Australian record,
- 37:07but there's an opportunity there.
- 37:09I think surely you, you, you. You might think that there that
- 37:14you'd have a crack again. Surely.
- 37:17So I. I found the prize money.
- 37:19So there's like 3 different tiers of first, second, third,
- 37:22fourth. They pay right down to 12th.
- 37:25So if you come first and you're a man and you run under 204, you
- 37:30get €75,000. If you're if you run umm between
- 37:352:04 and 2:06 you get 50,000 and if you run over two O 6 you get
- 37:3935 with the women. If you run 2 hours 19 under you
- 37:44get 75 between two hours 19, two hours 22 you get 50, and if you
- 37:48run over 222 you get 35 S. What's 5th and 221 by the
- 37:56matrix? 5th and 2:21 should at €7000.
- 38:02There you go. Which you take that.
- 38:06That's a nice little lousy conversion.
- 38:10Yeah, You know when you know that feeling like when you go to
- 38:14bed after a race that you're very happy with, and then you
- 38:17wake up in the morning, it's just like almost like you're
- 38:20floating in the bed and you say, yeah, I actually done that.
- 38:22Like this is life's, life's pretty good for a little while
- 38:25here. Imagine how good it would feel
- 38:27waking up tomorrow knowing that you're literally the fastest
- 38:31person ever born in Australia. Fastest woman to run a marathon.
- 38:35Like can't comprehend it. Yeah.
- 38:39Not yet, Ryan. Soon.
- 38:42Never. Say never.
- 38:46Never know, go through the go through the process and you
- 38:49could literally be thinking you're the fastest woman.
- 38:53I thought that. Was what I'm saying, Yeah.
- 38:58I imagine Andy Buchanan might be feeling something similar waking
- 39:01up tomorrow as well, given that his record was kind of on the
- 39:04line and didn't get taken down. It was.
- 39:09They gave it a shout though, didn't they?
- 39:11They went for it, yeah. Is there any anyone else in the
- 39:15women we want to talk about before we go to the men?
- 39:17I guess that the British girl, I don't know why I'm not aware of
- 39:21her. Natasha Wilson, she's run 224.
- 39:23It puts her in there, I think the eighth fastest, 8th, 7th
- 39:29fastest breath of all time, which is pretty outrageous that
- 39:34I don't know who she is. The previous PB was 226.
- 39:38A half marathon PB is only 70 minutes from last year.
- 39:43I. Thought Did you follow Jen
- 39:45Gregson? I thought she ran a like very
- 39:48light, solid race, like, you know, very soon after giving
- 39:51birth and was it 228? She ran and seemed to go out at
- 39:56a pretty at a pace that she thought was like she didn't go
- 40:01out for anything. Like she wasn't overreaching.
- 40:05I don't think faded a little bit towards the end, but otherwise
- 40:07it was like. Pretty impressive, but not that
- 40:10long ago was not able to run that pace for 10 KS and has now
- 40:14turned that into marathon pace within like 2 months.
- 40:17It's pretty phenomenal. Yeah, I think at one point I
- 40:21clicked into her and it was like 226 and I was like, shit, Jen's
- 40:25having a real good go. And that to end up with 228 is
- 40:29still a fantastic result given where she's coming from.
- 40:34I guess we could probably tie YouTube Diaries into these
- 40:36women's results because I know I think maybe on like the first
- 40:40ever episode or what? The first ever YouTube Diaries
- 40:42we don't do we do Izzy's channel.
- 40:46Yeah. I don't know.
- 40:47Have you watched her most recent, like pre Valencia video?
- 40:50I think it only came out a couple of days ago, but I was
- 40:53watching it earlier and thought the like, I know she's got
- 40:57someone else to do, like all the filming and Edison and stuff,
- 41:00but the whoever that is, like kudos to them.
- 41:03It's produced like really, really well, isn't it?
- 41:06Yeah. And.
- 41:08Slightly, slightly different angle, the way she kind of like
- 41:10sits down and answers a couple of questions, like literally
- 41:14questions that will be banned and on your mind, like wanting
- 41:17to know from an Elise as they're heading into the race.
- 41:21And she almost entered like a bit of a reflective state ahead
- 41:24of time. And she always speaks so well,
- 41:26doesn't she? So there's a combination of like
- 41:29sit down interview versus some training snippets and the
- 41:33realities of like travelling overseas to a race with all
- 41:38hopes and expectations on yourself.
- 41:40So now with the benefit of hindsight, you may want to go
- 41:45back and watch that. It's good watch.
- 41:49I do wonder how they how everyone felt given that the
- 41:53weather forecast, I know it wasn't bad weather, but it was
- 41:58not great weather like it's the last couple of years has been
- 42:02exceptional. And so when it was just that
- 42:06little bit warm, whether or not people were adjusting for that
- 42:10or just, and it's so hard, particularly Aussies in
- 42:13particular, you've travelled halfway around the world.
- 42:16Be hard not to. It's Austria.
- 42:18It's warmer in Australia, that is cooler in Valencia than
- 42:21Australia. Like you're saying the weather's
- 42:24not bad, right? This is what you're like.
- 42:26This is your comment, right? Don't create.
- 42:28Around 2:02 as a tree 202 thereabouts like you had a bad
- 42:34day. Like Alex E run 206 the Aussies
- 42:37run stupid like they're out so fast it was wrong fault they
- 42:41popped. Like Justin run Australian
- 42:44record. Yeah.
- 42:46I, I think that the, the weather, I think there might be
- 42:51some, I think there might be some sports science out there
- 42:56that would support and the, the notion that it was maybe a
- 43:00percent out, 1 to 2% out. And if you take 1% for someone
- 43:06running 320 per K, that's 200 seconds per kilometre. 1% of 200
- 43:13is 2 seconds, so you're only talking 2 seconds, which over
- 43:17the marathon is a minute but a minute, or a minute and 20
- 43:21seconds. But a minute and 20 seconds
- 43:24could compound to be quite a bit if you if you don't get it quite
- 43:28right or if you're targeting something super fine, so but
- 43:32surely. Which some of them.
- 43:33Are this is their? Job like they say it's a little
- 43:36bit warm all right, pull it back a little bit like they're not
- 43:40oh. I'm.
- 43:41Not saying that you necessarily get it wrong, but when you're
- 43:44when you're, but when you're getting to the point where
- 43:46you're scrapping and scraping for every second per kilometer
- 43:51and you have to adjust by two or three seconds because of the
- 43:54weather, but you've travelled halfway around the world.
- 43:57Do you want to do that? I doubt it.
- 43:59And so then you're just hoping that the Physiology is improved
- 44:02enough and maybe you've done some extra heat training or you
- 44:06just hope you have one of those days where you're fit enough to
- 44:09withstand what otherwise might have been a slightly more
- 44:11conservative pace goal. But it's that it's those sorts
- 44:16of thoughts that you have to contend with when you know the
- 44:19weather's not perfect. And so it's trying to navigate
- 44:22those ahead of the race and judge.
- 44:25Do I react to this weather? Is it a thing?
- 44:27Is it, you know, full Irish heat wave?
- 44:29Or is it just some mild, something mild that we don't
- 44:32need to? You asked, you asked who had the
- 44:35bad day. I'll tell you who had the bad
- 44:37day because I've got a few of them in the tracker.
- 44:39Actually, let's go and we'll we'll speak about the good ones
- 44:43in depth. But here's because I was like,
- 44:45shit, quite a few people have haven't really done what either
- 44:48they said they would or what I thought they might.
- 44:51So in a particular or the top of the tracker for some reason is
- 44:55Dan Nash. She ran 214.
- 44:56I think he was looking around 210.
- 45:00Jake Barraclough The results haven't been confirmed yet, but
- 45:04our theories are Oh no, that has he, he posted.
- 45:08He posted on EMS driver. I'll.
- 45:11Get it? Here it.
- 45:13DNF after then I don't really want to speak on it because it
- 45:18looks like he he might have come into some medical trouble given
- 45:22that is like last kilometer was at 3030 minute pace.
- 45:28All right. Well, I think.
- 45:29He says he was medical tent fell victim.
- 45:31To the medical tent once again, things weren't right from the
- 45:34start. Was basically redlining just hit
- 45:36just to hit 5K pace straight to battle.
- 45:38True. Pretty much lost consciousness
- 45:40after halfway. Tinker got pulled off the course
- 45:42eventually after stumbling for a while.
- 45:45Yeah, he says. No idea what happened, how it
- 45:47was normal, a bit low for my marathons.
- 45:49He just felt shit basically. OK, so bad day for Jake.
- 45:54Unfortunately Nick Basta, I don't know what he was hoping to
- 45:58run, but he's ran to sub 220. I don't know why he's in the
- 46:00tracker either. Jesus. 2/27 he ran your man
- 46:07Crippa. He's ran like 204 or something
- 46:10before. I think 211 did.
- 46:12You say your man your man. Been listening to our Genie Mac
- 46:21Brett Robinson at the check. Has he posted on Strava yet?
- 46:25Because the theories are that he he might have DNF D as well.
- 46:28Let's see. Same with Callum Hawkins, still
- 46:32says he's running and he was on like 209 at one point.
- 46:35Bastards. In the gutter again.
- 46:38Ryan Gregson, 217 Like we said last week, he would have been
- 46:41hoping for a lot better than that.
- 46:45Charlotte Perdu potentially a DNF also.
- 46:50And that's when I track a list of bad days ends.
- 46:53No Brett Robinson. Result on Strava.
- 46:56No. And the.
- 46:57First Irish at home was 2/15/26. His previous PB was set in
- 47:04Dublin and he ran 217 in Dublin in October.
- 47:07So end of October to decide. December he's jumped 2 minutes,
- 47:14so our sheet wave is real. It was.
- 47:18It was hate adapted. Yeah, speaking.
- 47:20Of Irish marathoners and DNFS, did you see Fergal Care and fell
- 47:25victim to the Singapore humidity?
- 47:27No, I was just. Looking at the results while you
- 47:30were talking there where he didn't finish.
- 47:33I think about 30 K or something he stepped off and was.
- 47:36He up leading. I don't know he's done like a
- 47:40detailed straw of a post on it. Re read that.
- 47:44Do what we say you the results from that.
- 47:47Yeah, Let me read the men's results out of here.
- 47:50So John Korea won an outrageous race.
- 47:53He ran 2 hours 2 minutes and 25 seconds to beat Amal Petros, the
- 47:592nd place finisher from the World champs.
- 48:02German representative in 2O four O 3 and 3rd place was a wet
- 48:06kebab. Norwegian representative in two
- 48:09O 425. Did you hear the commentator
- 48:12saying that those two both originally are Eritrean and then
- 48:16they obviously since re nationality or however you would
- 48:21formally say it. We don't changed allegiance.
- 48:25Did you see them like shake hands like 35 K?
- 48:29So a little fist pump. On the way through, like let's
- 48:31go, I think probably initiated it because he was bloody doing
- 48:35the overtaking. Yeah, he's just shaking.
- 48:37His hands see you later. It's just.
- 48:40Tasted a couple, yeah. Yeah, by the way, like when he
- 48:45when he made his move, he just looks, looks like he just starts
- 48:49to Sprint. It's like outrageous, but it's
- 48:52obviously like he's not actually sprinting, but the speed that
- 48:56he's moving when he drops them is.
- 48:58I can't get my head around it. Well, I think he.
- 49:00Closed and so because the first half they went through and 62 I
- 49:06don't know, 15 or something and then he ran 62, a 60 low like
- 49:11almost 60 minutes flat for the second-half solo sound like
- 49:16pretty outrageous which. Is kind of opposite to was it
- 49:19Chicago he won earlier in the air where he he went through
- 49:22halfway like on world record pace and then faded a little.
- 49:26Yeah, he went through. And like didn't go through and
- 49:27like 6016. Oh, maybe that was no, I think.
- 49:30You're right, yeah. So yeah, did the inverse.
- 49:35And the late, late addition clearly paid dividends because
- 49:38he knew what he was about to do and he got announced in the week
- 49:42leading up to it. A little bit naughty.
- 49:46They're not done about naughty. But like, when people select the
- 49:51races, yeah, months in advance and the lineups are released,
- 49:56and then all of a sudden this guy finds himself in shape he
- 50:00didn't expect to be. And he's like, I fancy, fancy a
- 50:03look at that Valencia marathon. You saw the.
- 50:05Field was soft. I'd be able to just, you know,
- 50:09look at a world class field and just go, yeah, I might roll all
- 50:13the legs over when it was it. Was a bit soft down the point,
- 50:16wasn't it? Yeah, yeah.
- 50:18Yeah, it was. Yeah.
- 50:20Because then. OK, I'll keep going through Alex
- 50:22Yee, probably the next notable name.
- 50:24He finished seventh in 206. Thirty eighth and isn't he's
- 50:28just become the second fastest breath ever behind only Sermo.
- 50:32So on the front of his group for a while was a male caress.
- 50:36He was doing the pacemaking and in there was Phil Sussman
- 50:41breaths have to there's all sorts of them in there.
- 50:44And then Phil, I mean Emile as he steps off probably isn't
- 50:49thinking that Alex he's going to go and blitz his own marathon
- 50:54PB. And because like it's pretty
- 50:56widely accepted that a meal status is like the best British
- 51:00marathoner right now and almost like the next best thing to Mo
- 51:03Farah. And obviously Alex's switched
- 51:07from the triathlon had. An.
- 51:11OK, debut at London, he was probably disappointed he ran 211
- 51:15or something. So to then come in here and Phil
- 51:19Sussman just ran 2 O 7-8 weeks ago in Amsterdam and just
- 51:24completely like dominates almost and become the second fastest
- 51:28ever run like almost a 5 minute PB.
- 51:31And it gives me hope, Dean, that the cycling there might be
- 51:35something to it. But like, that's Alex G London
- 51:40was really warm this year and that was his first, like, shot
- 51:43in the marathon. So like, you have to take that
- 51:45one with a pinch of salt. Like now he's like, like after
- 51:49being fully invested now for the last while, what mileage running
- 51:53wise was he doing? Don't know, I think if it it
- 51:59focused on it a bit but he's still doing cross training
- 52:01wasn't he? Based on the limited insights I
- 52:03could see from YouTube bits and bobs, but it'd be it'd been very
- 52:08specific hadn't at this year. Like he really had made a real
- 52:11focused effort to transition from the triathlon to focus on
- 52:19running and try and have a red hot crack.
- 52:20But it's still I still find it pretty remarkable because it was
- 52:25only what a month ago when he when he ran the Valencia half
- 52:29and that was 61 1/2 minutes. And put that in perspective have
- 52:33to who was at Maragami at the start of the year with us ran 60
- 52:391/2 minutes. So it was have to is a minute up
- 52:41the road on him at like with that Maragami race and have to
- 52:46by all reports is in the shape of his life and has had a really
- 52:49good domestic season here. And yeah, Alex is just was too
- 52:54strong. I don't know.
- 52:55It's pretty exceptionally that 206 is is pretty pretty
- 53:00phenomenally good. You just maybe as it gets longer
- 53:03because of this aerobic condition that you have as a
- 53:06triathlete it it pays dividends. Do you?
- 53:09Know the only difference is there differences there Alex had
- 53:13that UK and Irish heat wave at the end have to didn't we?
- 53:18Had the that cool that that very cold Aussie Aussie Aussie
- 53:24winter. I'd say some of Yi's fellow
- 53:29triathletes are pretty pleased he's gone and done that because
- 53:32it maybe gives triathletes in general a bit of a better name
- 53:35or a bit more respect amongst the running only community that
- 53:40a triathlete can just come in and have 12 months of
- 53:42specificity and do something outrageous like that.
- 53:47I hear exactly what you're saying, Ryan, and that's why
- 53:50we'll go onto our training weeks.
- 53:55That's why we've been on the bike for the last six weeks
- 53:58trying to hold fitness. I do.
- 54:00I do believe that though, like in like, I don't think that was
- 54:05intentionally commenting on that, but it does put it does
- 54:08put into perspective just how exceptionally impressive
- 54:11triathletes are. But it also I think underscores,
- 54:14and I think we've spoken about this, but say in Perth, a lot of
- 54:18the top runners, particularly on the roads have over in recent
- 54:23times have been people that are multi sport athletes that then
- 54:27take to the roads and do very well because they're just
- 54:30aerobically superior because they're because there's not that
- 54:34many people that are able to run and hold mileage like Jake
- 54:37Barraclough can. And there's.
- 54:39And so the closest thing you can do is to supplement it with a
- 54:44heap of cross training. And that's what, yeah,
- 54:47triathletes and dual athletes are able to do and then run very
- 54:50well off it. So given given his triathlon
- 54:55background, the Olympic distance, he would run 10K isn't
- 55:00it? So you would think of all the
- 55:03kind of running distances, 10K would be like his strongest.
- 55:07Given like most of his train and life career he would have spent
- 55:11being specific towards 10K. So I've just looked there and
- 55:1510K on the track he has the 35th fastest time of all British
- 55:25athletes and 10K on the road he has the 12th fastest of all time
- 55:30British athletes. And now his marathon time he's
- 55:33second fastest ever. So just going to show.
- 55:37But maybe. Maybe, though, yeah.
- 55:40I again. We're straying into dangerous
- 55:42areas here. But like, his race distance is
- 55:45about an hour 40 something, I think, like an Olympic distance
- 55:49trial. What do they go for?
- 55:51You know, 30 odd minutes of a run leg.
- 55:53And then what do they cycle? 40 KS?
- 55:55They're less than an hour. And then the swim, 15 minutes
- 55:58thereabouts. So yeah, about an hour 40, an
- 56:03hour 30. So maybe that that's where the
- 56:05marathon in totality, they're just that chassis they have to
- 56:08develop because they're not running like a track runner,
- 56:11They're running, they're running almost like 1/2 marathoner
- 56:15effort, I suppose off the bike because absolutely mash in their
- 56:19legs. So maybe that's why it's always
- 56:22so good. Be interesting.
- 56:24To get Kenji's thoughts on his performance, because I always
- 56:27remember him saying like when the announced is coming over to
- 56:32the running, like he was enlightening us around, like, Oh
- 56:36yeah. But you have to think about how
- 56:37much time Alex can spend at threshold during all of the
- 56:41disciplines versus how much time when he's just running.
- 56:44And he was kind of like suggesting it might not be that
- 56:48smooth of a transition. Obviously it's gone incredibly
- 56:51well so. I'll do a message him, message
- 56:55him and we'll get him on and pick his brank as he's an
- 56:59actuarial scientist and a Mad Dog of a trainer.
- 57:03So it's a good combination. Yeah, sounds fun if you're.
- 57:07Alex Yay do you? If you're Alex Yay, Do you just
- 57:13suck off the running now and concentrate on triathlon or do
- 57:16you try and become the fastest ever British runner over the
- 57:20mountain? I reckon he's got an eye to the
- 57:23Olympics and he's using this as a bit of a gap here so he
- 57:26doesn't disconnect before the So I think he's got a bit of time.
- 57:30So yeah, so he probably might be having those thoughts now it's
- 57:33gone so well. But at some point he needs to
- 57:35get back on the bike, otherwise he'll start to, I think like
- 57:41lose touch with the the next wave of like that.
- 57:43Matt Hauser and these young guys that are coming through are
- 57:46going to. You might find it hard to close
- 57:48the gap again on the specificity of the other legs.
- 57:52I would have thought, hey, I really don't know.
- 57:54Yeah, I. Think the general consensus what
- 57:56he's let on from his YouTube stuff was that because like
- 57:59there's such a big gap between Olympics now, he wanted to
- 58:02really focus on running and kind of use the gains that he'll get
- 58:07from doing that and take it back to triathlon for the next
- 58:10Olympics. Whether a 206 now changes his
- 58:14mind and he would run the Olympic marathon or something,
- 58:17who knows? Because is it Mo Farah that's
- 58:20run 205? No.
- 58:22Is it? Yeah.
- 58:24What's who? Who paced Emil Caress?
- 58:29Yeah, What's Emil? Caress run so.
- 58:31Alex's times like 8 seconds faster than a male's PB now.
- 58:35But it's did Emil run that at the Olympics though?
- 58:40What did he run at the Olympics? London last.
- 58:42Year it looks like yeah, because when he was. 4th at the Olympics
- 58:45in something pretty wild, wasn't he?
- 58:47Yeah. So Emil's PB2O646 from London
- 58:50last year and he ran two O 729 in Paris also last year.
- 58:59And then I guess we should probably talk about Phil Sessman
- 59:02as well. We spoke about enough in the
- 59:04build up. He finished 13th round two O 711
- 59:09which I think is a one second PB from Amsterdam earlier in the
- 59:16year. You'd have to be having mixed
- 59:20emotions when you're when you're throwing yourself at the line to
- 59:24sneak under. I can.
- 59:27Relate from Ballarat, if he's wired any similar to me he'd be
- 59:34thinking oh fuck that PB give a shit about it.
- 59:42But yeah, I mean, that was with hindsight, everything's so
- 59:48clear, isn't it? But running that two O 7 in
- 59:51Amsterdam, don't think it's done him any favours in the end.
- 59:55Because you can say it's like as easy as you want it to be.
- 59:59But clearly just like running a marathon run the PB 8 weeks out
- 1:00:02from trying to run another PB in the marathon distance is a
- 1:00:06really tough ask. And I mean, fair play, like he
- 1:00:10has run a PB, he's gone quicker again, but.
- 1:00:14On the back of his Amsterdam run he was real and his goals from
- 1:00:182O6 originally to maybe even sneaking into two O 5 S to then
- 1:00:23look and he's still in the two O 7 range.
- 1:00:26I would say he's sounds bizarre saying someone's run. 2O7
- 1:00:30finished 7th in the race and slightly disappointed, but you
- 1:00:34can see my angle somewhere. You just wonder what's going
- 1:00:38through his head when Alex he is like kicking past them.
- 1:00:41He's like that fucking prick. And then another guy I wanted to
- 1:00:47mention, Johnny Mellor, he's stems from the mayor's side
- 1:00:52region. Originally he's 39 years of age
- 1:00:56or 3010 to 39 later this month. He's I think his existing PB was
- 1:01:01209 from New York one year. Let me just check 2/09/09 out
- 1:01:07from Seville last year. So he's even still running fast
- 1:01:11last year, to be fair, he's then gone and ran two O 845.
- 1:01:16I think it is today, which is pretty crazy in itself.
- 1:01:24And then to be behind still three of the Britons or two of
- 1:01:28the Britons running 2O8 Team GB have definitely won the the
- 1:01:33battle versus Australia here, Battle of the Commonwealth.
- 1:01:37How did? The Canto Tom Dicanto.
- 1:01:40He was first Aussie home, wasn't he?
- 1:01:42When he ran 211 something, yeah, he ran really well.
- 1:01:49Yeah, I mean, he's paid me. Yeah, still in high, but he did
- 1:01:53you. Were you guys following him on
- 1:01:56the track? Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:01:58He splits were very good, weren't they?
- 1:02:02Like he judged it very well. I, I put a note in given like
- 1:02:08the short turn around between the race and our recorder, put a
- 1:02:10few notes into my notes on the old iPhone to remember to speak
- 1:02:15about. And one of them says, because
- 1:02:19last weekend talking about the world cross trial selection race
- 1:02:23for Australia and I was kind of suggesting that Tom's place
- 1:02:27could be up for debate. And my note says get TDC on the
- 1:02:31plane. Exactly.
- 1:02:35Exactly. Because like if that's not
- 1:02:38enough after finishing in the top 6 and to then go, I know the
- 1:02:42fact that Bretton have to have had shit days, but to do that
- 1:02:46like 211. As well.
- 1:02:51Did he? I saw, I saw on the track of him
- 1:02:52overtake Brett, but yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, surely that
- 1:02:58hopefully that's enough, right consistency.
- 1:03:00Has to count for something like you're way more likely for Tom
- 1:03:03Dicanto to run well in worlds then likes of half to our brat
- 1:03:08or whatever. Like they might get a better
- 1:03:09result but they also might have a bad day as well.
- 1:03:13There was this other guy gone. Keep him on and you just feel.
- 1:03:17Like he deserved it. He rocked up.
- 1:03:19Not only did he beat them in the race, they chose to.
- 1:03:22So they skipped trials to target this race.
- 1:03:26He did this race and beat them and he did trials and qualified.
- 1:03:31Like what more do you want? And then and then how he
- 1:03:34executed this race? So he went halfway 10539, so you
- 1:03:40double that and that's 21118 and he came in at 21114.
- 1:03:47Yeah, like a four second negative split.
- 1:03:48Like it's like like perfect, you know?
- 1:03:52Maculous. Yeah.
- 1:03:54Just a quick one. There's another guy that I sort
- 1:03:57of came across, so there's a lad from Ireland called Connell
- 1:04:00Whelan. He does.
- 1:04:00He's like a videographer and he has this YouTube channel called
- 1:04:04Chasing Pace and he released a few videos on this slide called
- 1:04:08Max Malarvi. Have you ever heard of him,
- 1:04:11Ryan? I don't think.
- 1:04:14So he's a Scottish? Guy who trains at that Cambridge
- 1:04:18in Coleridge M team and Grand Bush Park is it, you know, oh
- 1:04:23cottage, that cottage team, you know, cottage in the bushy park.
- 1:04:28Yeah. Anyway, he trains with them and
- 1:04:30he had run his PB in the marathon was from last year's
- 1:04:36Valencia and he ran 2:17 and then in Copenhagen this year in
- 1:04:41September he ran 63 and then there this morning he's after
- 1:04:46running 212 high. So.
- 1:04:51On YouTube and there's a few videos now, they're only really
- 1:04:54short form, like there's 1-6 minutes long, 11 minutes long, 8
- 1:04:58minutes long. But it just talks a bit about
- 1:05:01your own Max and like 212. Like that's getting up there.
- 1:05:05I think he's Scottish, so that must be up there.
- 1:05:07Nearly the fastest Scottish marathoner of all time.
- 1:05:12And but yeah. Want to look over?
- 1:05:16Yeah, that's class another YouTube Diaries double.
- 1:05:18Yeah. And do we want?
- 1:05:22To unpack any of the. Investor commas.
- 1:05:24Bad results as in like potentially what's happened to
- 1:05:28have to breast or Grego? Well, Grego's yet to hit run a
- 1:05:35good marathon, let's be real. I think it was.
- 1:05:37Around 2:12 to 13, well, for hit like like that's still so good
- 1:05:41and I'll I'll never run that fast ever.
- 1:05:43But like maybe that's just what he can do.
- 1:05:47Like for a lot of so good on the track.
- 1:05:48Sometimes you just don't convert like so Yeah 2.
- 1:05:53What do you run 217? 217 yeah.
- 1:05:56You know, side note on Gregor. Whenever I hear his name
- 1:05:59mentioned on podcast or anything like that and the person says
- 1:06:03Ryan Grip, I'm like, oh shit, it's my name.
- 1:06:07Someone's about to say my name and then I realized I'm not a
- 1:06:143:30 one 1500m runner or whatever.
- 1:06:17He ran 330 nor 2:30 in marathoner, which I'm trying to
- 1:06:21critique here. So yeah, he's definitely
- 1:06:24entitled to the number one Ryan Grip and Brett.
- 1:06:31Such a shame because we'd like back him in every single time,
- 1:06:34but that's safe. I don't know how many like poor
- 1:06:37results in a row now is men mental strengths must be taking
- 1:06:41a bit of a beating. Yeah, if you had your, you know,
- 1:06:45your black. Book where you sort of back them
- 1:06:47down. You might be scratching that one
- 1:06:48out. Nah, his odds are drifting.
- 1:06:53Yeah, he'd be getting. You'd be getting.
- 1:06:54Good odds if you were. Looking at looking at it to a
- 1:06:58bookmaker for a for a price, what's half to his excuse?
- 1:07:04Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:07:06Look, I mean those guys are all so I followed Brett have to they
- 1:07:11were they all went for the that same Alex year group, didn't
- 1:07:15they? They were all three minute
- 1:07:17kilometers, 3 minutes per kilometer.
- 1:07:19Same same group Andy was in when?
- 1:07:21Andy did it. So I think everyone took knows
- 1:07:23the drill and that's what Brett was in when he ran his time in
- 1:07:27Oka Oka. I thought, I'm pretty sure Jack
- 1:07:30Rainer paced the group and it was 3 minute case, you know, 63
- 1:07:34low through halfway and if you can hold on, you can hold on.
- 1:07:38So I think everyone just went with that and yeah, they.
- 1:07:45Their Physiology didn't. Quite stack up to could you use
- 1:07:49like the flight as an excuse? Like, it can't be easy like
- 1:07:52that. Well, then again, just Danson is
- 1:07:54just thrown that away. But the flight like has to take
- 1:07:58its toll. I think it yeah, it increases
- 1:08:01the chances. Of something not.
- 1:08:03Going right for sure, like you just seen it, you might be fine,
- 1:08:07but it's certainly a added the added complication that might
- 1:08:10play a role whether it does for everyone, you know, you know,
- 1:08:16Yeah, no gun. Oh, now I was going to like, I
- 1:08:21don't know, I've done. Some flights where you do a, you
- 1:08:23know, take a red eye flight, I've slept the whole way and
- 1:08:26raced fine. Other ones, you take all the
- 1:08:28precautions and they're not had a good race.
- 1:08:30Like, I don't know if it's there's so many variables, isn't
- 1:08:34there? But ultimately, if you're really
- 1:08:36fit and you judge the race well, you'll have a good day.
- 1:08:40Yeah. I mean, I'm sure there'll be.
- 1:08:42Some something to come from it, as in explanations and stuff.
- 1:08:45So we'll have to just kind of hang in there for that.
- 1:08:49But like Brett's been a part of MTC now for like, is it forever
- 1:08:53or so? Is the the Nick Badeau train?
- 1:08:58And is it just like he's kind of reached his limit with it and
- 1:09:02could do with a bit of a change of stimulus or because it seems
- 1:09:06like each build seems to be somewhat similar in terms of
- 1:09:10like the sessions and the progression of them, doesn't it?
- 1:09:12And now I guess for the past couple of years, it's starting
- 1:09:15to yield similar sorts of results.
- 1:09:20Bring him over the Perth, Let Ralph ever go to him.
- 1:09:27I'm sure he'd love to. I reckon that might conclude
- 1:09:33Valencia, unless you've got any other people that you wanted to
- 1:09:35speak about. Nah looked unbelievable though.
- 1:09:39Like just. That play I can't wait to go
- 1:09:42over in January. And run. 1/4 of that race, yeah,
- 1:09:47well, that's what they they said is.
- 1:09:49Valencia is known as the city you're running because it's got
- 1:09:514 World Athletics label races, the only city in the world to
- 1:09:55have such, and you'll be doing the 10K.
- 1:10:00Well, mildly other. Just an observation, but like.
- 1:10:04Were you watching the stream from say around 2 hours 10
- 1:10:08minutes through to say 2 hours 20 minutes?
- 1:10:11Did anyone? Did you?
- 1:10:12I don't know if you saw, but just the the number of athletes
- 1:10:17streaming through like with it crazy.
- 1:10:21But yeah, just hard, hard to get your mind around just how many
- 1:10:25people have have decided because when you don't see, when you
- 1:10:30only see what was it? What was the there was the 1st
- 1:10:332:00 and then there was a bit of a gap right after that.
- 1:10:35Like if you look at say Alexei in 7th in 206.
- 1:10:40So and that's that three minute K pace.
- 1:10:42If you go to one of those Japanese races, you'll have
- 1:10:44quite a few in that sort of range, but it's the cluster from
- 1:10:48around that 210 or around that 214, and it was just phenomenal.
- 1:10:54220 flat would have left you. 115th.
- 1:10:58Yeah, like that is, yeah. Stacked.
- 1:11:03Yeah, and they all. Literally came.
- 1:11:05In that. In that lighter latter part of
- 1:11:08it really. Like it wasn't like it was super
- 1:11:10pointy. Well, even like A21459 was 70.
- 1:11:134th So that between like that 2:14 and 2:10, there were so
- 1:11:18many. Yeah, it's going to be bucket
- 1:11:22list, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 1:11:24It seems like it's a destination for anyone.
- 1:11:26Trying to target. A PB in and around that, let's
- 1:11:30say 3 hours down to 215, everyone's heading to the same
- 1:11:34place. I think you would imagine
- 1:11:37looking ahead to next year as well.
- 1:11:38Not that this will affect like the groups that we'd be looking
- 1:11:42at, but with it being an Olympics in 2028, people next to
- 1:11:47some December 26 will certainly be targeting that to try and run
- 1:11:51an Olympic qualifier, won't they?
- 1:11:54I think it's changing their entry.
- 1:11:56It's now. A ballot for next year's entry.
- 1:12:02I heard that on the stream, yeah.
- 1:12:05What was the sublet? This year was like 220.
- 1:12:08For the man that will probably come down as well in IT 218 or
- 1:12:13something. The.
- 1:12:16Jake Smith on his. Strava posted like his normal
- 1:12:18Sunday run. He's run 30K and it's captioned.
- 1:12:22Ye Phil and Mella are so in my head.
- 1:12:30And then he goes on in the like sub caption explaining that he's
- 1:12:35watching that one. No, there are no spoilers.
- 1:12:38We'll. Put it on when we get.
- 1:12:39Off he's gone on. He's gone on to say London 26,
- 1:12:46the European standards 2/09/29 is his aim.
- 1:12:50Imagine pushing you very close in London this year to now being
- 1:12:535 minutes slower than him. Need to up my game massively.
- 1:12:57That sort of transparency is amazing, isn't it?
- 1:13:00Yeah. What was that?
- 1:13:02There's a. Marathon on in America as well.
- 1:13:05Is it CIA? Has that happened yet?
- 1:13:09Is it? Is that one legal?
- 1:13:11Is that the? 42 down.
- 1:13:16Downhill case, isn't it? Is that, is that this one?
- 1:13:19I think so, yeah. So it doesn't count.
- 1:13:22Or do people actually? Use it.
- 1:13:24As a result, I think people maybe can use it for like a.
- 1:13:30USA Olympic trials qualifier or something like that.
- 1:13:33Like there might be a an in but then in like it would never
- 1:13:36count for a world record or you know.
- 1:13:40It's it. Yeah, has an asterisk.
- 1:13:43Like a point to point does because the regulation is.
- 1:13:48A metre per kilometre I think, isn't it?
- 1:13:51CIM is known for its significant net elevation drop, historically
- 1:13:55around 111 metres. That's not bad, I'm sure.
- 1:14:02My fox was very. Fond of that course, I think.
- 1:14:05Last year wasn't he? He did run his 220 most sub 220
- 1:14:10multiple times like but I think 1 was there.
- 1:14:13He's gone missing again. Is he?
- 1:14:15Well, I haven't seen him on travel.
- 1:14:16In here, not like he's got he's got some sort of back.
- 1:14:20Injury. Oh, fair come back.
- 1:14:25Are we talking? Speaking of injuries, are we?
- 1:14:28Talking about our weeks or we look, I've just done an average
- 1:14:33week. Paper running 133.
- 1:14:35Kilometers. I'm racing next week so I'll
- 1:14:37have a down week this week. Yeah, couple of sessions done a
- 1:14:42park run the other day. Was fun.
- 1:14:45Park Run. Did you did you send it?
- 1:14:48And all I was sort of it was yesterday.
- 1:14:52I don't Hills Den sort of park run up well a little bit hard
- 1:14:56and thresholds that put it that way and.
- 1:14:58Then heels after. As well, I think around like
- 1:15:001524 or something for the background and then done some
- 1:15:06hills after then long run there today.
- 1:15:11Yeah, Roger. Dean, you guys just.
- 1:15:14Recycling. No.
- 1:15:17Cycling for, well, not much. Cycling for me ended up.
- 1:15:19Getting a bit sick during the middle of the week, but out of
- 1:15:23yeah, sure, which as in thinks, but that's life.
- 1:15:27But yeah, still a similar amount of running, just even with
- 1:15:30missing a couple of days. So yeah, bodies hair is still
- 1:15:34heading in the right direction. Will be a bit slow, but that's
- 1:15:38how it needs to be I think. So 30 minute double s to the
- 1:15:41recipe for now. Yeah.
- 1:15:44And maybe you can do a little bit longer, so I might.
- 1:15:46Be able to do a commute in the morning to work, so 45 minutes
- 1:15:50but then not too much after that.
- 1:15:52But I'll chat to Steve this week because this has been last two
- 1:15:56weeks of the 30 minute double s and things are feeling pretty
- 1:15:58good. Start ramping it slowly.
- 1:16:03Yeah, yeah. But.
- 1:16:04Yeah, chat to. Chat to Tim Chat to.
- 1:16:06Steve, make sure I'm allowed to before I get in trouble, so I
- 1:16:09don't get in trouble. Good stuff.
- 1:16:13Similar, yeah. I've ran an unbroken kilometers
- 1:16:16a day in a 5 minute Rep, so let's go.
- 1:16:20Almost feel like a runner again. Reply no longer just.
- 1:16:25A couch critic, but actually. Somewhat back in the game,
- 1:16:30that's great. Here it's it's bizarre.
- 1:16:33How hard 5. Minutes worth of jogging can
- 1:16:36fail though. It's like hilarious but I'm
- 1:16:38loving it. It's going to be so exciting how
- 1:16:41fast you get it back. Man, you'll be so surprised.
- 1:16:45I actually wrote. I wrote.
- 1:16:46A PB mileage week this week 340K that's the.
- 1:16:53Way supplement it. Yeah, so good.
- 1:16:58Fun. Good weather.
- 1:17:00Hopefully we just keep heading in the right direction now.
- 1:17:03There were a couple of other agenda items, but they'll just
- 1:17:06have to hang around till next week.
- 1:17:09Kip Jogi paced the. Queen, Queen of.
- 1:17:11Thailand to a 2 hour half marathon.
- 1:17:13Don't think much needs much more needs to be said than that
- 1:17:16itself. He's fucking absolutely raking
- 1:17:20it in isn't he? He's like going to get Thailand
- 1:17:23citizenship. They love him over there, it's
- 1:17:25so weird. Good on him.
- 1:17:27Yeah, it's well. And complete right then boys,
- 1:17:32should we go and watch the F? One, I'd say yeah, just.
- 1:17:35Keep an eye out for during the week, there'll be an interview.
- 1:17:38Where a guy whose name rhymes with dog.
- 1:17:43And he's got a. Really good YouTube channel.
- 1:17:47That's the hints I'm giving. He's pretty fast, right?
- 1:17:55Then look. Forward to let us know your
- 1:17:57thoughts guys on Valencia and on the interview.
- 1:18:01Have you put them up? No, I have.

- 1:18:06I know Australians don't really you don't need these, but
