- 3:00week's conversations where we talked about do you know your family medical history? So
- 3:07I just don't you know? Recap and piggyback off of what we talked about
- 3:12last week where it's important to know the different diseases or ailments, so just
- 3:20things in general that we may have experience or that people in our families have
- 3:27experienced. You know, it's always good to talk to your elders, took
- 3:32to those that's around you, because you never know what you may experience that
- 3:38somebody else has experienced in your family, you know, So it's always good
- 3:43to have those conversations. It's always good to just follow up and see what's
- 3:47going on. Get your regular checks, the you know, have those conversations
- 3:53with your doctors, or when you go to your doctor, you're gonna have
- 3:58questions acts about well, who has what on what side, or who has
- 4:02this a It's just a rare of different things that goes on with knowing your
- 4:10family medical history. You know. Last it got that for me. It
- 4:14was something that I experience throughout my childhood and throughout my adulthood. Was knowing
- 4:21that I was able to know and I had that opportunity to ask questions or
- 4:28the things that I didn't get to ask questions. You know, I was
- 4:30able to do research on so UM and it played a vital part in my
- 4:39everyday life now at this stage in life, going through different things that I've
- 4:46gone through my life. It played a vital title and a very important role
- 4:55history. So tonight, what I want to really touch on is the importance
- 5:01of the conversation. And many of us, you know, we especially if
- 5:06we grew up in that if we're eighties, nineties babies, two thousand babies,
- 5:12you know, we come from an era where we were now getting into
- 5:16you know, a whole lot of technop technology was coming into our generation.
- 5:23I always say my years, the eighties, we're probably the last ones that
- 5:27really was able to play outside. You know, I couldn't play outside.
- 5:30But another conversations, but you know, we we were the last group that
- 5:35really went outside and played outside or did anything outside. Now this generation they're
- 5:41more technoledgely, they're they're savvy with their techno technology. I can't see today.
- 5:46I don't know what's going to don't charge from my head and my hard
- 5:49you know what I'm saying. But anyway, this generation is more tech savvy
- 5:55then my generation was coming up. But you know, it's good to sit
- 6:03back and recollect on certain things because talking with our others and talking with those
- 6:11in our close net of family circles, you get to learn things. You
- 6:15get to know a whole lot of who you are. You get to know
- 6:18a whole lot of people from your past, like your ancestors. Those people
- 6:25you get to know and put the pieces of the puzzle together that some people
- 6:30don't always have the opportunity to know. And if you're fortunate enough to get
- 6:36to have those opportunities, you should really be able to grasp the wisdom and
- 6:42the knowledge that you get from those opportunities to have those conversations to under stay.
- 6:48And you know, our parents and our grandparents generation, they were very
- 6:56health conscious, or not even so much health conscious, but what they used
- 7:01and what they had to use cast them alive a whole lot longer, if
- 7:05you noticed, than the generation that we're in now. You know, our
- 7:11generations and we want something quick, We want the next quick thing. We
- 7:15want to be able to take a town or take something and it be over
- 7:19it. But the previous generations they didn't necessarily have those advantages as to what
- 7:29we have now. You know, they went back and they used a lot
- 7:32of homeopathic remedies or just stuff that they were able to conjure up in their
- 7:39communities or in their gardens or whatever it is that they had. They were
- 7:43able to use that, and that's why a lot of them, if you
- 7:46noticed lived well into their seventies, eighties, nineties, and even the hundreds,
- 7:49you know, so it's good to sit down and talk to find out
- 7:54what what can I do? What can I you did this person do?
- 8:01Because and again, a lot of our elders live or probably came from countries
- 8:07or lived in areas where it was hard probably get to a doctor, or
- 8:11if they was a doctor in their area, that doctor had to see everybody
- 8:16that lived in that area. So you may not have always been able to
- 8:20have that one on one with your physician as we do. Now. We
- 8:26can pick up the phone or go on our app and message our physician with
- 8:31the question and we get a response in two point five seconds. It's you
- 8:35know, I may be exaggerating, not really, but you know we can
- 8:41pick up. We have that technology now where everything is quick, while our
- 8:46elders they didn't necessarily have that. So now that we are in like our
- 8:54I guess you call it our middle stages or wherever we are in life,
- 9:01we need to be able to have those conversations with one another within our families
- 9:07to get to know, well, how did you do this? Because we're
- 9:11able to do this now, but how did you guys, do this,
- 9:15How would this? How did this work? See you? You know,
- 9:20if you weren't left there and you're not this issue, what did you do?
- 9:24How did it play out? So those are things and I know,
- 9:28for me personally, i'd love to hear how things were done previewsviously because it
- 9:39gives me the opportunity to appreciate what I have. Our ancestors weren't as fortunate
- 9:46as we are, and a lot of them didn't have the knowledge that we
- 9:50have. A lot of us have our degrees, We go to college,
- 9:54we go displace that place in the third and we get to intermingle with different
- 10:00people from all walks of life, and we get to hear things, We
- 10:03get to know things. But a lot of our others didn't, may not
- 10:07have even left their four corners of the world to get to know these things.
- 10:11So, you know, it's important to really have these conversations because at
- 10:22the end of the day, when you do have to go to your physician,
- 10:28or if something does happen with you and you have to have the con
- 10:33or you need to know. If you don't know, sometimes it's a real
- 10:37disadvantage, but other times it becomes a blessing. Now what happens if you
- 10:43don't have that at all. You know, some people are adopted, some
- 10:46people don't know their their by logical families. Some people's families even if they
- 10:52did, don't, you know, something may have happened. So you're not
- 10:58a half that information. That's thing that you can do is try to and
- 11:05I you know, try to probably have some kind of testing if there's any
- 11:09of that accessible to you, or just try to do the best that you
- 11:13can with the information that you have. Information is powerful. Information is knowledge,
- 11:20and information is your the wealth that you have to do the service for
- 11:26yourself. It's not a disservice, it is a service. You know.
- 11:31Knowledge is what's gonna get you to the next level. And for me,
- 11:35being able to sit and learn and then read and you know, transition into
- 11:43what I do now in the health care field, I'm able to understand things
- 11:50more as to why this plays such a big part. And I feel for
- 11:54us as African Americans, Latinos, West Indians, whatever we wherever we come
- 12:01from, we need to do our community and we need to do ourselves a
- 12:07service to get to know what it is. You know, there's certain things
- 12:13like for instance, my family We're from the West Indies and we love high
- 12:18flavored, high seasoned food. We love things that are just it cain't have
- 12:28to taste good basically, but some of those things that we love also trigger
- 12:35some of these ailments that we deal with. Yes, there are ways that
- 12:45you can find out about something along that line to find that infimilation out.
- 12:50But there are ways that you can go up about out getting to learn of
- 12:56what may have, what maybe or what there is you know. I recommend
- 13:05it doing testing, a genealogy testing or genetics testing rather because it does helps.
- 13:11It helps, and it may not combat what you're facing at that particular
- 13:18moment, but just to get able to say, Okay, I have a
- 13:20plan of action, I know what to do, I know how I'm going
- 13:24to go ahead and just deal with this situation. It's always wise to have
- 13:33that knowledge. But like I said, if you're not able to get it,
- 13:37do the best with what you have because it'll still take you to where
- 13:43you need to go. And you and your physician, whoever, your family,
- 13:48whatever it is you guys, sit down and talk because it starts with
- 13:52just one Having that conversation with just one person and your family makes a wealth
- 13:58of difference, Having that kindnversation at all makes a wealth of their friends.
- 14:03You may it may not be for you, but it may be for somebody
- 14:07down the line, one of your descendants. Whoever it is a niece,
- 14:11a cousin, an't gonna aunt a grand child. It's going to help them
- 14:18because then they're able to say, well, okay, this information was passed
- 14:22down to me because this person dealt with this, and this is what it
- 14:26is, and this they listed. And sometimes we don't our world and our
- 14:30lives are so busy that we don't get to write down everything. But again,
- 14:33having that one on one conversation talking this thing here called our mouth,
- 14:41instead of using it just a gosslip, because you know, we love a
- 14:43good gosslip, and I'm gonna say I love a good gosslip. But instead
- 14:48of using it for that, use it for sharing knowledge, use it for
- 14:54passing down information. Because I tell people, I am so glad that I
- 15:01Again, I was inquisitive as a child to know and to listen. And
- 15:07you know, back then, when were kids, we weren't supposed to eat
- 15:09driversations. But I be dropped on a lot of stuff, And honestly,
- 15:13I'm glad that I did at times because now I get to understand. Now
- 15:20that I know, I understand where and what the information fortune to have,
- 15:28how it how it's helping others in my family, how it's gonna help my
- 15:33future generations when my children have children and they are children have children. You
- 15:46know, so you glad to be able to and you have. You can't
- 15:56hold it. You have to share it is it's for it. It is
- 16:04vital to you. Sorry if you did if I think it probably just but
- 16:12that's okay. Um Um. One of the things I'm gonna say about knowing
- 16:21your fa family, his family, medical history, and your family history on
- 16:26a whole understand you get to learn. You get to realize that you didn't
- 16:40you you come from to come from people that had a sense of I'm gonna
- 16:48keep on going, no matter how hard, no matter what it is that
- 16:51I'm going through, no matter what it is. They got up every day,
- 16:59they kept it and they went on. Yeah. I see the connections
- 17:06going in and out. Not sure why, but we're gonna keep rocking and
- 17:08rolling. But um, you know, I encourage everybody to talk to your
- 17:15practitioners, your doctors and see if there's any kind of genetic testing that you
- 17:22can do just to see the endpoint, Well, where did this come from?
- 17:27Or what's what? You know, if you have a parent they're still
- 17:33alive, or a grandparents they're still alives, try to go to the doctor
- 17:36with them, just to see what's going on with them on a whole,
- 17:38because there's so many things. Like for me, I try to figure out
- 17:45what's going on with the elders in my family so that I know what to
- 17:51look for. You know, those are little jewels and the tokens of wisdom
- 18:00that we all need, you know, Like I have my uncle, for
- 18:04instance, he comes back and forth from here to Barrios to go to the
- 18:11doctor, and I'm the one that makes the doctor appointments for him. And
- 18:15if there's anything, I gotta fight with him, to fight with the insurance
- 18:19companies. But we sit and we talk and we hear what the doctor have
- 18:22to say, and they're telling me, well, this has to be done,
- 18:26that has to be done. Take me with my grandparents, you know,
- 18:29I get to my grandmother will tell me, well this is going on
- 18:32and that's going on, and I need to do this and not get involved.
- 18:37Don't just wait until something is about to happen or something has happened to
- 18:44not know, get involved from now, especially if you're if you're an adult,
- 18:49if you're away and you have children, you have a family of your
- 18:52own, the other things that you should be doing anyway, you know.
- 18:56Yes, we all have busy lives. Yes things are always ever going,
- 19:02ever evolving, but there's no the simple things because it's gonna help you,
- 19:07it's gonna help others that's around you. So we're gonna take a really quick
- 19:15commercial break and then we're gonna come right right back in and we're gonna talk
- 19:21somewhere. Let's chat with that and we'll be right back. Basically Black after

- 22:42to each other. And I want you to keep that, Keep that and
- 22:47somewhere safe or somewhere that you know you're gonna be able to find it and
- 22:51be able to share it. And just notate it when you do it,
- 22:56not tate the date that you started it, and just put my family family
- 23:02medical History treat and you're gonna see how this is gonna be so helpful and
- 23:10so vital to you. It's gonna be like, wow, I couldn't realize
- 23:17or wow, I didn't remember. So use it, use it to your
- 23:22event, vantage use it to help you, use it to help anyone in
- 23:27your family, because honey, it is going to be so important. It's
- 23:33gonna be so needed, and you're gonna be like, oh my goodness,
