- 0:00Welcome into another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:02I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is Damaris of Damaris Welcome to the show.
- 0:08Hello.
- 0:09Thank you for having me.
- 0:11It's a pleasure.
- 0:12We've had some technical difficulties back and the last couple of days, but we got it figured
- 0:16out.
- 0:17Yep.
- 0:19Well, for me and everyone else out there in the world, why don't you give us a little bit of a
- 0:26a backstory and who you are, and we'll pick it up from there.
- 0:31Okay.
- 0:31Well, my name is Damaris.
- 0:32That's what I go by.
- 0:34That is actually my given name.
- 0:36I get asked that.
- 0:37And so I've been writing music for since I was 20.
- 0:41I'm 53 now, so the last thirty three years.
- 0:44And I'm and just writing songs and writing songs.
- 0:48And in my later life when my children grew up, I thought, what if I played them out loud for
- 0:55people?
- 0:55So that's kind of the phase that I'm in right now is all those songs I've been writing for
- 1:00thirty years now, putting them out in public.
- 1:03And so I've got a couple of albums out now, and I love it.
- 1:06It's a new path of life, and I'm just going full throttle with it.
- 1:11That's fantastic.
- 1:13A similar story to some other friends of mine that you know once the the kids were kind of
- 1:19grown it was like you know what I think I want to do something else and I think I want to do
- 1:23what I'm passionate about.
- 1:25I've been very fortunate in my life to to kind of run them simultaneously.
- 1:30I still have young children at home, but but we keep on at it with our music and now the
- 1:35podcast as well.
- 1:38That's cool.
- 1:38You have recorded music that's out there into the world?
- 1:45I do.
- 1:45I have two albums out.
- 1:47They're on every digital platform.
- 1:49I have one called Come Sit By My Fire and one called Howl at the Moon.
- 1:53I'm a country girl, so everything's kinda relates to or the album names are related to
- 1:58what we do out here in the country.
- 2:00And, and then I have three or four singles out also.
- 2:03Yeah.
- 2:05Just gonna keep recording.
- 2:06I have tons of songs, tons of music to record.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:09Well, you know, thirty some years, three decades of writing and kind of filling up
- 2:14notebooks, and you play guitar as well?
- 2:19Yes.
- 2:19I do.
- 2:20I learned guitar when I was 20.
- 2:21My dad my dad was a lead guitarist in blues, rock, kind of a shredder.
- 2:28And when I was 20, I and and I grew up with him being in band.
- 2:31So but when I was 20, thought, hey.
- 2:33I'm not going out into this world.
- 2:36Maybe I should learn guitar.
- 2:38You know, what what is it?
- 2:39And I thought, guitar, you know?
- 2:41So he taught me a song.
- 2:43And from that, I instantly went into writing.
- 2:48That's a similar experience for myself.
- 2:50I think I was writing a little bit beforehand, but then, you know, I played drums in concert
- 2:55band and picked up bass for jazz band, you know, about grade.
- 2:59And then by grade, it was like, okay, dad.
- 3:01You you have this guitar.
- 3:03You know, I see I'm watching you.
- 3:05I'm already kinda learning things.
- 3:08And he gave me his, you know, nineteen fifties Mel Bay chord book.
- 3:12And and I was like, cool.
- 3:14Well, the chords haven't changed.
- 3:16Right?
- 3:16So you don't you don't need the fancy the fancy stuff in the courses, and we never paid for any
- 3:21kind of lessons.
- 3:23I just fell in love with it.
- 3:24I think that's something, you
- 3:26know, this stage where Like you said, I was writing.
- 3:29Mhmm.
- 3:30I was writing words forever.
- 3:33I've been writing words forever.
- 3:35It's just that when the guitar got put in my hand, it's like those two worlds collided or or
- 3:41became one fused.
- 3:42You know?
- 3:43And and yeah.
- 3:45That's the
- 3:45rest that.
- 3:45To hear you say that because I say it all the time.
- 3:49I say it all the time that there's something incredible about the way the, you know, a human
- 3:56voice and the six strings on a guitar just kind of blend perfectly and how they kind of pull
- 4:03songs out of us sometimes.
- 4:06Mhmm.
- 4:07It's an incredible instrument.
- 4:08There's a reason that it is so prevalent in rock and blues and country.
- 4:14Right?
- 4:15That these Right.
- 4:17These genres rely heavily on storytelling and and the guitar is just a great vessel to bring
- 4:25those melodies for the sake of storytelling.
- 4:28So fun to hear someone else Yeah.
- 4:30Was doing to to things I say a lot.
- 4:33Yeah.
- 4:33Isn't that crazy?
- 4:34Because it was kind of like the missing piece, you know, because I was a writer, and then I
- 4:38get this guitar and learn chords, and then it became the portal to this, you know I will say
- 4:44I think that the guitar taught me how to sing.
- 4:46I wasn't ever a singer.
- 4:48But that reverberation, you know, when you're sitting there on the side of your bed with that
- 4:52guitar, like, you know whenever you're in the right place.
- 4:56The guitar guided me as far as staying on key or learning how
- 5:02to That's something that I don't think I'd I'd ever really thought about.
- 5:08But you're so right that having that right against your chest and then vibrating at the
- 5:14same, you know, and being right there in tune, if you will, with the guitar, that probably
- 5:20speaks to why the instrument is as powerful as it is, especially an acoustic instrument where,
- 5:26you know, those waves are traveling through the wood and amazing.
- 5:30Right.
- 5:31What a what a great insight, Damaris.
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:35Go face.
- 5:37You should be
- 5:38the host.
- 5:38Afraid to sing with the guitar.
- 5:41What's that?
- 5:42I said you should be the
- 5:43popular host.
- 5:46Oh, okay.
- 5:48No.
- 5:48That's good, though.
- 5:49Well, fantastic.
- 5:50So we got a couple albums out.
- 5:52You've been playing.
- 5:52Are you playing out in your local area?
- 5:56Where is your local area?
- 5:58Well, I I live in Humboldt, Kansas.
- 6:00It's a really small town in Southeast Kansas.
- 6:03It's less than 2,000 people.
- 6:06I like to kinda say that we're in the middle of everywhere because we're very rural, but two
- 6:12hours in the circle around us is Kansas City, Joplin, Tulsa, Wichita.
- 6:17Right?
- 6:17So there's this Topeka.
- 6:18So it's about 6,000,000 people in this little area.
- 6:22And, yeah, when I started getting out there playing my music, I did all of it locally, but
- 6:30really, really quickly, really quickly, it it just moved into everywhere else in the region.
- 6:37So I do travel.
- 6:38I play in all those towns.
- 6:41And it's kind of a perfect blend because it's not or perfect route because it isn't too far
- 6:46away.
- 6:47So I go there and then I go play in I'll play in Tulsa.
- 6:50Then I'll go play in Wichita, Lawrence, Topeka.
- 6:53By the time I make it back to that town again, it's been a while and they're ready to see me
- 6:58again.
- 6:59So and I've built a quite a quite a sweet little endearing following because I am a
- 7:05storyteller.
- 7:06So people connect deeply to to, the songs, and I also talk quite a bit in between the songs
- 7:13and tell a little bit more about it.
- 7:15I kinda integrate both of those practices into what my show looks like.
- 7:21And I think that's what people want these days.
- 7:24Right?
- 7:24The reason that social media is so popular for, a lot of us artists is because people have a
- 7:31chance then to learn about the artist and the stories behind the songs.
- 7:35And I think we are while attention it's weird.
- 7:40Right?
- 7:40It's a weird time because people's attention spans are so short, but yet if they're
- 7:48interested in something, they will binge it, and you will give it all of your attention for
- 7:53all of
- 7:55And I and I think in this day and age, and this is kinda just coming to me now, is that we we
- 8:00want to be less viral and more binge worthy.
- 8:04Right?
- 8:05And binge worthy is a lot longer
- 8:07process.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:10It's a lot longer process because you kinda have to be a lot more invested in it, But the
- 8:16rewards of that long term, I think, are much higher.
- 8:19Right?
- 8:19There there isn't the burnout that you get from just trying to be a a sensation when you are
- 8:26out there building, you know, building a following, building a community around you and
- 8:31your music.
- 8:31So very interesting.
- 8:33And you're in a great spot there.
- 8:34Right?
- 8:34I just blew through Joplin and didn't make it into Tulsa because we kinda routed.
- 8:39We were on our way down to Austin from Plattsburgh, Missouri.
- 8:42Where are
- 8:42you from?
- 8:43Weeks ago.
- 8:44I I live in a small town.
- 8:46Mine's smaller than yours.
- 8:47That's our that's our South Dakota thing.
- 8:49So Okay.
- 8:51In a little town called Tyndall in Southeast in Southeast South Dakota.
- 8:55About a thousand people, little farm town.
- 8:58I'm sure very similar to to where you're at.
- 9:01But, you know, while everything isn't two hours away, we're five hours away from the Twin
- 9:06Cities.
- 9:06We're, you know, four or five hours away from Des Moines, three hours from, you know, Omaha.
- 9:12So we're kinda working the northern
- 9:13It's kinda the same thing.
- 9:14Where you're at.
- 9:16Yeah.
- 9:16And that's what we've been doing.
- 9:18This the you know, this summer, I've been branching out a little farther.
- 9:21I got down into the Saint Louis area, Kansas City.
- 9:24But then, you know, next week, actually, in just a few days, now that's kind of occurred to
- 9:29me, I'll be driving through Little Rock and going out to Memphis and then hitting a
- 9:33festival called Vibe Fest, June, and that's in Summersville, Missouri.
- 9:39So probably five hours east of you.
- 9:43But
- 9:44So are you doing are you playing music?
- 9:49Are you taking your podcast on the road?
- 9:52Both.
- 9:52Right?
- 9:53And that's the the great benefit of having a podcast that's about music and musicians is
- 9:58that I kinda tour with both in tow, where I can set up and to just invite other musicians to
- 10:05come out and talk to me like we will do in Little Rock.
- 10:08Kinda almost an open mic, but it's a showcase for us to see who are the talented people in
- 10:13the area that we want to work with, that we want to showcase out of your town, and to kinda
- 10:18give each one of our markets out there a chance to a chance to shine.
- 10:24And that's really I'm very invested in building, you know, our our Upper Midwest scene
- 10:31and trying to get farther south.
- 10:34But, you know, I say from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains and from, you know, the
- 10:38Canadian border all the way to the Gulf Of America, we wanna meet as many artists and as
- 10:43many, you know, interesting creative people as we can.
- 10:47And while we can do a lot of that from home to do these Zoom calls and and this kind of
- 10:53communication, it's always better when we can get together live.
- 10:58And having been a, you know, touring musician most of my life, not necessarily on a large,
- 11:04you know, tour bus scale, I've always been out and not afraid to find new venues and to go out
- 11:10into new communities and and to make new friends.
- 11:13So that's what this summer has been about, is getting out and coming through and finding all
- 11:19the little kinda hidey holes along this I 35, I 29 corridor here where we can start to build
- 11:27ourselves into more of a regional name.
- 11:31Right now, we're more of a local podcast.
- 11:33A lot of people that were already in my network, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, a
- 11:37little bit in Nebraska.
- 11:39And now we're just trying to expand that a little bit and spend the next, you know, the
- 11:44next thirty years really digging into these relationships with people and growing our
- 11:49community and building something that lasts the test of time.
- 11:53We're we're not like I said, we're not trying to go viral.
- 11:56We're trying to be binge worthy.
- 11:57We're trying to be something that we want to dig into and and stay for life.
- 12:02So now you're a big part of that, Damaris.
- 12:04It sounds like we are perfectly aligned.
- 12:07Thank you.
- 12:08I know.
- 12:09Thanks for thanks for letting me come in because the thing is is, I mean, I'm gonna take
- 12:13that with me, the part about being binge worthy because, you know, it's kind of like that hook
- 12:19of your storyteller, that engagement that you're talking about.
- 12:22It does take that in the beginning to kinda you said the short attention span is if you're
- 12:28engaging though, that attention span is instantly ignited.
- 12:32And then so I need to be thinking what you just said about what that next layer is, and that is
- 12:36turning yourself into binge worthy, which by the way, I had a lady come in the other day to
- 12:40my work and she said, Hey, we found you on YouTube and we ended up listening to you all
- 12:45day long.
- 12:45So her husband and her just had me up on the big screen in their living room and they just
- 12:50kept me on.
- 12:50And they just let every video go.
- 12:52And I'm like, okay.
- 12:52So that's exactly what you're talking about.
- 12:55She's like, never knew.
- 12:56You're so yeah.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:58Well, and that's because I just I'm not chasing that lightning in a bottle.
- 13:02Right?
- 13:03Like, doesn't.
- 13:03If that happens, that's gonna happen because we've put in the work every single day
- 13:08throughout the years to to make ourselves, you know, to put ourselves in that position.
- 13:13And I don't think in this day and age, I don't feel like you can make content.
- 13:19Right?
- 13:19You know, you're not writing songs to to try and make it on pop country radio.
- 13:24Right?
- 13:24I I for myself
- 13:26I'm not.
- 13:26I've never
- 13:27all of my songs are deeply personal anyway, so I've never you know, if one of them make it to
- 13:32that, it's a miracle.
- 13:34But I'm never I'm never creating content in that way.
- 13:37And, you know, maybe that's exactly why, you know, we won the content creator of the year
- 13:42award from the Midwest Country Music Organization because we were committed to just
- 13:46know we're gonna make this stuff that we care about.
- 13:49And when other people start to dig into Can
- 13:51I already tell by talking to you?
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:55Well, I've I've always been a big music Right?
- 13:58As well as a as well as a songwriter myself, I've always been a fan of other songwriters.
- 14:02And a year ago, I kind of fell right into podcasting by accident almost and have found a
- 14:10home for myself.
- 14:11And now we're how do we create this into more magazines and publications and and all the
- 14:17things?
- 14:17All the things that used to be around twenty years ago that I remember that made the awesome
- 14:22music scenes that I cared about really great, we're trying to bring that back.
- 14:26And, you know, especially post COVID, a lot of these independent publications and things like
- 14:31that, a lot of them just, you know, went went belly up because they had no they had no market
- 14:36anymore.
- 14:37And now that the world is, you know, reemerging over the course of the last several years, you
- 14:42know, for us, Minneapolis is kind of our big scene, and, you know, they were completely shut
- 14:48down where South Dakota and Iowa and Nebraska maybe kept going, and we had some gigs.
- 14:53Minneapolis and Minnesota for the most part were completely shut down for almost two years
- 14:58or longer, And now it's starting to kinda that beast is starting to reawaken, and we've
- 15:06positioned ourselves right on kind of that cutting edge to be, you know, right there for
- 15:12it and to be the people that talk about all of these artists that are out there doing it and
- 15:17maybe alleviating some of the pressure of promoting themselves by making it easy, making
- 15:22it a conversation.
- 15:26I think it's necessary.
- 15:28You know, we don't you don't get the opportunity very often.
- 15:31And I can say, like, I can tell by the way that you are you're interactive with me.
- 15:36It really is about community, and I like that.
- 15:39I like the the free flow conversation type podcasting.
- 15:41I've done some where and it's not I'll take anybody.
- 15:45I I I love to speak to my music, but there is a difference between having your list of
- 15:49questions ready and then just free flowing like this.
- 15:52So I appreciate this because I, you know, I I didn't know what I was getting into today as
- 15:56far but I am always ready.
- 15:58At this point, I'm like, throw it at me.
- 16:00So you know?
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:02And maybe I would benefit in some areas by having a very structured podcast, and some
- 16:10people have asked me for that.
- 16:11But I wanna get to know you, especially on the podcast that I'm Right.
- 16:15I don't know you at all.
- 16:16Right?
- 16:17We haven't, you know, a few emails and text messages back and but I wanna know your story.
- 16:21And I think the the way that we communicate with each other and what makes it really drives
- 16:27it home is that I'm an artist myself.
- 16:29So the the questions that I'm going to ask about your career are going to be much
- 16:34different than someone who's outside of the music, you know, maybe in the industry, but
- 16:39outside of the performing songwriting aspect of it.
- 16:41So I think that helps.
- 16:43I think the insights that I have in from my own career helped to drive that a little bit and
- 16:47make it very comfortable for any artist to sit down and just kinda roll with me.
- 16:52But thank you.
- 16:53I I appreciate you saying so because I I really I've been committed to keeping that because I
- 16:59am a conversationalist.
- 17:01I I don't want to be boxed in.
- 17:03You know?
- 17:04I I don't want to
- 17:05That's what the comes sit by my fire.
- 17:09Yeah.
- 17:09Exactly.
- 17:10That's kinda like that.
- 17:11What the comes sit by my fire about is is that come in, you know, let's sit down.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:16Let's hang out.
- 17:17Well, let's let's enjoy each other's company.
- 17:19And I will say that I have fully enjoyed your company today.
- 17:24We're running out of time on this episode, but I would love to have him back anytime you got
- 17:28something to promote as well.
- 17:30Go ahead and plug all your stuff one more time for everybody before I let you get out of here.
- 17:35Alright.
- 17:36Well, my name is Damiris.
- 17:37You can find me at damirismusic.com to follow my shows, where I'm going right now.
- 17:42What's coming in front of me, I'm getting ready to do a fundraiser in my local community for
- 17:46Humanity House, so I'm excited about that, and it's helping with poverty.
- 17:51And then I will head off to Wichita for a few gigs, and I've got the Tulsa State Fair, and
- 17:56I've got church studios in Tulsa.
- 17:58So I have some really good gigs coming up.
- 18:01But you can follow me on any digital platform.
- 18:04I've got, I don't know, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and then look at my website.
- 18:09It's really gonna connect you to who I am.
- 18:12Where's the website at?
- 18:15It is demerismusic.com.
- 18:18Perfect.
- 18:18Does that help?
- 18:19Well, Demeris
- 18:20Okay.
- 18:21Go ahead.
- 18:21Go ahead.
- 18:23Yep.
- 18:23That's it.
- 18:24That's it.
- 18:24That's me.
- 18:25Oh, alright.
- 18:26Well, you got it.
- 18:27It's demerismusic.com.
- 18:30Thank you so much for being on the show today.
- 18:32And Damaris, thank you for being part of the scene.
- 18:36It's very nice to meet you.
- 18:38See you later.
