- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here lovely to have your
- 0:15company. I hope you are going well.
- 0:17What a week it has been. Hey, I have flown to Sydney and
- 0:21I've returned home and today in my part of the world it is a
- 0:26public holiday. If you get today off with me, I
- 0:29hope you have a wonderfully relaxing day.
- 0:32And if you don't get today off, I'm very sorry.
- 0:35Thank you for keeping the world turning good on you.
- 0:38You will get a public holiday at some other point in time because
- 0:42today is the Hobart show day. Not that I have any intention of
- 0:46going to the show, but I'll take the public holiday anyway.
- 0:50But no matter what your day holds, I know what it holds for
- 0:53the next 5 to 10 minutes. It involves you and I reading
- 0:58the next chapter in the book of Acts as we hear what poor old
- 1:01Paul is getting up to trapped by these political games played by
- 1:08the Jewish leaders and the Roman governors.
- 1:12And as you would know, many of the epistles that we read are
- 1:15written by Paul during this time.
- 1:17So isn't it a wonderful thing that they allowed his visitors
- 1:20to come so that he could hear a word from the churches and write
- 1:24letters of encouragement, which we still read today and they
- 1:28encourage and inform us in our daily faith walk and life?
- 1:32So what an amazing time. Come back with me friends.
- 1:36Let's head back there and read together.
- 1:39Acts Chapter 25 Three days after Festus arrived in, Say, Syria to
- 1:54take over his new responsibilities, he left for
- 1:57Jerusalem when the leading priests and other Jewish leaders
- 2:01met with him and made their accusations against Paul.
- 2:04They asked Festus as a favour to transfer Paul to Jerusalem,
- 2:09planning to ambush and kill him on the way.
- 2:12But Festus replied that Paul was in, say, Syria and he himself
- 2:16would be returning there soon. So he said those of you in
- 2:21authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong,
- 2:25you can make your accusations. About 8 or 10 days later, Festus
- 2:30returned to say Saria, and on the following day he took his
- 2:34seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in.
- 2:38When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered
- 2:41around and made many serious accusations they couldn't prove.
- 2:46Paul denied the charges. I'm not guilty of any crime
- 2:50against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,
- 2:54he said. Then Festus, wanting to please
- 2:58the Jews, asked him, Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and
- 3:02stand trial before me there? But Paul replied, no, this is
- 3:08the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here.
- 3:12You know very well I'm not guilty of harming the Jews.
- 3:15If I have done something worthy of death, I don't refuse to die.
- 3:20But if I am innocent, no one has a right to turn me over to these
- 3:24men, to kill me. I appeal to Caesar.
- 3:28Festus conferred with his advisers and then replied.
- 3:31Very well, you have appealed to Caesar and to Caesar.
- 3:36You will go. A few days later, King Agrippa
- 3:41arrived with his sister Bernice to pay their respects to Festus.
- 3:45During their stay of several days, Festus discussed Paul's
- 3:49case with the king. There is a prisoner here, he
- 3:52told him, whose case was left for me by Felix when I was in
- 3:57Jerusalem. The leading priests and Jewish
- 3:59elders pressed charges against him and asked me to condemn him.
- 4:04I pointed out to them that Roman law does not convict people
- 4:08without a trial. They must be given an
- 4:10opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.
- 4:15When his accusers came here for the trial, I didn't delay.
- 4:19I called the case the very next day and ordered Paul brought in.
- 4:24But the accusations made against him weren't any of the crimes I
- 4:28expected. Instead, it was something about
- 4:31their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul insists is
- 4:35alive. I was at a loss to know how to
- 4:38investigate these things, so I asked him whether he would be
- 4:41willing to stand trial on these charges in Jerusalem.
- 4:45But Paul appealed to have his case decided by the emperor, so
- 4:50I ordered that he be held in custody until I could arrange to
- 4:54send him to Caesar. I'd like to hear the man myself,
- 4:59Agrippa said, and Festus replied.
- 5:02You will tomorrow. So the next day, Agrippa and
- 5:06Bernice arrived at the auditorium with great pomp,
- 5:10accompanied by military officers and prominent men of the city.
- 5:14Festus ordered that Paul be brought in.
- 5:16Then Festus said, King Agrippa and all who are here.
- 5:20This is the man whose death is demanded by all the Jews, both
- 5:25here and in Jerusalem. But in my opinion, he has done
- 5:29nothing deserving death. However, since he appealed his
- 5:33case to the Emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.
- 5:38But what shall I write the emperor?
- 5:41For? There is no clear charge against
- 5:43him. So I have brought him before all
- 5:46of you, and especially you, King Agrippa, so that after we
- 5:50examine him, I might have something to write for.
- 5:53It makes no sense to send a prisoner to the Emperor without
- 5:56specifying the charges against him.
- 6:09Thank you for today, Jesus. Thank you for the life that you
- 6:13give us, for the sunshine and our shoulders, for the friends
- 6:17and family around us, For the opportunity to work and
- 6:22contribute to this world that you've placed us in, For the
- 6:26opportunities to enjoy some of the good things too.
- 6:30We are so blessed by you and your love and this covenant of
- 6:36grace in which we live. Thank you Jesus, that you give
- 6:42us these good gifts, and not just for ourselves, but so that
- 6:46we can share this good news with others in the way that we live
- 6:51and the way that we treat them and the news that we share with
- 6:55them. Holy Spirit, grow in US, shape
- 7:02us to live as your loved children and to share that love
- 7:08with those in our lives. And we pray.
- 7:10All of this in Jesus name. Amen.
