- 0:46Speaker 1: movie series. We're getting close to the end. It's almost
- 0:49Speaker 1: time to wrap it up. Are you tired of it? No,
- 0:52Speaker 1: not at all.

- 1:51Speaker 1: synopsis of October Kiss? I am. October Kiss.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Poppy is hired near Halloween as a temporary nanny by Ryan,
- 1:59Speaker 2: a widowed, work-obsessed executive. Through a series of adventures, the
- 2:05Speaker 2: eternally optimistic Poppy sets out to teach Ryan and his
- 2:09Speaker 2: two young children what's important in life, unconditional love, family,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and the joy of everyday occurrences.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Ashley William plays Poppy Summerall. She has 81 credits. We
- 2:19Speaker 1: saw her most recently in Notes of Autumn. She's very
- 2:22Speaker 1: well known in the Hallmark universe. But outside of that,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I saw her play Victoria in 16 episodes of How
- 2:28Speaker 1: I Met Your Mother. And Claire in the 2011 Emily
- 2:32Speaker 1: Giffen book adaptation, Something Borrowed. Did you realize that Ashley
- 2:36Speaker 1: Williams is not in any movies in this year's Countdown
- 2:39Speaker 1: to Christmas lineup? I did realize that as I was
- 2:42Speaker 1: preparing for today's episode. That's a miss. What's happening there?
- 2:45Speaker 1: I think there's just so many. I think there's just
- 2:48Speaker 1: so many stars.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, then I'm hoping for something in January from her.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Hopefully. I'm hopeful.
- 2:56Speaker 2: This movie co-stars Sam Yeager as workaholic Ryan. This appears
- 3:01Speaker 2: to be Sam's only Hallmark movie. During the making of
- 3:04Speaker 2: October Kiss, Sam was also co-starring in the family drama Parenthood.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Of recent, he.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Has been in 19 episodes of The Handmaid's Tale, Devil
- 3:14Speaker 2: in Ohio, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Second appearance of Devil in Ohio in our news and
- 3:20Speaker 1: notes recently. Yeah. Have you watched that? Yeah. Do I
- 3:23Speaker 1: need to? You won't like it. Okay. Hannah Turami plays
- 3:27Speaker 1: Zoe Larson. This was her first of nine acting credits.
- 3:30Speaker 1: She would go on to appear in other things, including
- 3:33Speaker 1: Escape from Mr. Limoncello's Library, a movie adaptation of a
- 3:37Speaker 1: book series that my kids loved. She's also in the
- 3:40Speaker 1: sci-fi thriller From, which is a show my husband watches.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I don't partake. Wendy has a big old red circle
- 3:48Speaker 1: with a line through it when it comes to sci-fi.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I just don't. It's not for me. I also saw
- 3:52Speaker 1: that she's now 20 years old. I did notice on
- 3:54Speaker 1: her IMDb she is all grown up. She's beautiful. She's
- 3:57Speaker 1: all grown up. This movie originally aired October 17th, 2015,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and it was originally titled Temporarily Yours. I like that better.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Do you? It is cute. It's cute. It's cuter. I
- 4:11Speaker 1: think so too. I think I like it too better. Well,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the writer of this movie is Mackenzie Austin. She has
- 4:16Speaker 1: two writing credits. The other is Winter Love Story starring
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jen Lilly and Heaven McGarry. And I feel like October Kiss,
- 4:24Speaker 1: Winter Love Story, they're fine, but very generic. Temporarily Yours
- 4:29Speaker 1: speaks more to what this movie is about, but it doesn't,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it's not like Temporary yours in the leaves. Like it
- 4:35Speaker 1: says nuts in the leaves. The fall vibe. So I
- 4:37Speaker 1: understand why they went with October Kiss. This was directed
- 4:41Speaker 1: by Lynn Stopkowitz, who has 27 directing credits, including an
- 4:46Speaker 1: Aurora Teagarden mystery with an eerily similar title to one
- 4:50Speaker 1: we just reviewed, Three Bedrooms, One Corpse. Oh, I thought
- 4:54Speaker 1: it was One Ghost. I wrote corpse. It is three bedrooms,
- 5:00Speaker 1: one corpse. It is? Indeed. Was that on Movies and Mysteries?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Of course. It's in the Rura Tea Garden mystery.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Finally, Raiders on IMDb gave this movie 6.5 out of 10.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I'd like to point out that Kiefer O'Reilly plays Zach
- 5:16Speaker 1: Larson in this movie, and I know Wendy hates kids
- 5:18Speaker 1: and she didn't pull this, but speaking of all grown up,
- 5:20Speaker 1: Dude has 35 acting credits, including a role in the
- 5:24Speaker 1: entire first season of the Disney Plus adaptation, The Mighty
- 5:26Speaker 1: Ducks Game Changer, as one of the Don't Bothers. I don't...
- 5:30Speaker 1: I've never seen that show. I don't know what is
- 5:33Speaker 1: a Don't Bother. Is that a team? It's the hockey
- 5:36Speaker 1: team that is developed. Their team is called Don't Bother? Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 1: because they're the kids that like the other... It is.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They're like the underdogs. Did they end up winning? I mean,
- 5:49Speaker 1: you gotta watch. Okay. I didn't like purposely leave him out,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but I did.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I know.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Okay. Should we give a first impression? Have you had
- 5:58Speaker 1: time to come up with one? No, you go first.
- 6:00Speaker 1: My first impression is, is this the moment in which
- 6:02Speaker 1: Ashley Williams was typecast? Oh, for real.
- 6:05Speaker 2: For real.
- 6:06Speaker 1: For real. We're just going to go with your first impression.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I don't have one. Cosign. Cosign.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Other than my other first impression was I texted Megan
- 6:15Speaker 2: while watching this and I was like, did you see
- 6:17Speaker 2: his kitchen?
- 6:17Speaker 1: It's so dated. I said I didn't clock it other
- 6:21Speaker 1: than his hideous bar stools that are so uncomfortable. Would
- 6:25Speaker 1: you ever sit on like a crisscross waffle pattern metal table? Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 1: that's not like sit here and do your homework, kid,
- 6:33Speaker 1: while mom bakes cookies. The back of your legs when
- 6:36Speaker 1: you get up from that thing? No. No. Awful. Or
- 6:39Speaker 1: the back of your legs squishing through each as you're
- 6:44Speaker 1: sitting there. Like a Pillsbury dough coming out of a can. No,
- 6:48Speaker 1: thank you. Oh, my God. Let's talk likes for October Kiss.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I have a few. Yeah. I loved, loved, loved that
- 7:00Speaker 1: this was set during Halloween. Yes, that's my number one.
- 7:03Speaker 2: When I asked on our Instagram, what Hallmark movies are
- 7:09Speaker 2: there that are Halloween themed or take place during Halloween?
- 7:13Speaker 2: And this was the only title mentioned. This was like,
- 7:17Speaker 2: this is it.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Is next week's movie not a Hallmark movie? It's just
- 7:22Speaker 1: Hallmark adjacent because Autumn Reeser is in it. Nikki DeLoach
- 7:26Speaker 1: is in it. Nikki DeLoach is in it, yeah. I
- 7:27Speaker 1: always transpose their two names in my mind. Yes, it
- 7:31Speaker 1: was not originally a Hallmark movie. But Hallmark fans have
- 7:36Speaker 1: adopted it as one of their own. Yes, exactly. That's
- 7:38Speaker 1: what I thought. Exactly. I have a question, though.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I'm just not sure why Hallmark doesn't make at least
- 7:43Speaker 2: one movie a year that takes place at Halloween other
- 7:46Speaker 2: than this.
- 7:47Speaker 1: This is what I was thinking. Maybe people don't re-watch
- 7:52Speaker 1: Halloween-themed movies. That's a good question. Do you consider, like,
- 7:58Speaker 1: they make so many Christmas movies, right? Yeah. But Christmas is,
- 8:02Speaker 1: for many people, a season. Is Halloween a season? Or
- 8:06Speaker 1: is it, like, a day, and then there's, like, fall?
- 8:10Speaker 1: I think it's fall, with Halloween as, like, maybe at
- 8:13Speaker 1: most a week. The way... certainly now it's become like that, right?
- 8:18Speaker 1: There's so many like Halloween when you have kids. Right.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So is that why you don't think Hallmark? Maybe it's
- 8:26Speaker 1: just not as marketable. Yeah. That's what I think. But
- 8:30Speaker 1: I think they should have more than one. And they
- 8:32Speaker 1: don't lean too hard on the Halloween. It's just like
- 8:35Speaker 1: a moment. I mean, they're getting their costumes and okay. Okay.
- 8:39Speaker 1: They're decorating. They're getting their costumes. I get it. But it's,
- 8:44Speaker 1: It does become a season because they're decorating and they're
- 8:47Speaker 1: making cookies.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think like the time frame here is
- 8:50Speaker 2: only like two weeks. Yeah, it's not much.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You're right. It's not much. So I wrote, this movie
- 8:56Speaker 1: features child actors that even Wendy can't hate, question mark. Oh, no.
- 9:01Speaker 1: The daughter was so sassy. Yeah. And the boy was
- 9:06Speaker 1: like sweet, but I was like, dude, you can't be
- 9:08Speaker 1: that scared of spiders. Like, come on. But the daughter
- 9:11Speaker 1: probably annoyed me the most just because she was like,
- 9:14Speaker 1: like they wouldn't even give this nanny a chance when
- 9:20Speaker 1: she like came to their house. Like they were just
- 9:23Speaker 1: nasty to her. Not they. The daughter was nasty to her.
- 9:27Speaker 1: She was nasty to her. I don't like that. Well, I...
- 9:31Speaker 1: I don't love it either. I mean, I don't want
- 9:33Speaker 1: someone to be nasty to me. I don't like kids
- 9:35Speaker 1: that are nasty. However, I think it was like a
- 9:37Speaker 1: little bit of self-preservation. They're like, this chick's going to
- 9:40Speaker 1: leave us too. Like nobody pays any attention to us
- 9:43Speaker 1: and this chick's going to leave us. I hear you.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So I'm not going to let myself get attached. I
- 9:49Speaker 1: hear you. But if you're so starved for attention. Yeah,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but they've been burned so many times. So she's like,
- 9:55Speaker 1: screw you. I'm not even going to let myself care
- 9:58Speaker 1: about you. Did they?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Establish that those kids had been burned before by other
- 10:03Speaker 2: like babysitters?
- 10:04Speaker 1: It seemed like the dad was like, yeah, I'll do anything. Like,
- 10:08Speaker 1: please stay for two weeks. Like I, you know, she
- 10:11Speaker 1: comes home and she's like scrubbing the carpet. I think
- 10:13Speaker 1: they had established that the kids were a little bit
- 10:15Speaker 1: of A menace. I mean, if you were hired as
- 10:19Speaker 1: a nanny, would you scrub somebody's carpet? If there was
- 10:23Speaker 1: a mess and a spill, you're just going to leave
- 10:26Speaker 1: the big spill there? You're not going to clean up
- 10:27Speaker 1: after yourself? Oh, I was thinking she was like cleaning
- 10:30Speaker 1: an old spill. No, that's not my impression. I certainly wouldn't. No,
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'm not breaking out the little green steam machine while I,
- 10:37Speaker 1: after the kids go to bed. No, but if a
- 10:39Speaker 1: mess happens on my watch, I will do my best
- 10:41Speaker 1: to clean it up. So you enjoyed the children in
- 10:44Speaker 1: this movie? I did. I did. Okay. I don't think
- 10:47Speaker 1: the movie exists without the children. It doesn't. It doesn't.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It doesn't. And I liked their arc. Okay. I saw
- 10:54Speaker 1: a review that said, like, no kids like their nanny.
- 10:56Speaker 1: This is not believable. And I spent a lot of
- 10:58Speaker 1: time in the car this morning thinking about that comment
- 11:01Speaker 1: because I think the reality is when you see on
- 11:05Speaker 1: TV or in a movie, you've got a single parent
- 11:10Speaker 1: bringing in a love interest, right? Oftentimes, we see the
- 11:14Speaker 1: kids pushing back against that. Mm-hmm. But in this case,
- 11:17Speaker 1: we had two kids who just wanted their dad to
- 11:20Speaker 1: spend time with them. And the nanny was not, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: she didn't come into their lives as a romantic interest. Right.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And she also wasn't a roadblock to their dad spending
- 11:28Speaker 1: time with them. She was interested in them. She made
- 11:31Speaker 1: them feel important. Right. And she was trying to facilitate
- 11:33Speaker 1: the dad's relationship. She wasn't like, I'm going to take
- 11:36Speaker 1: away your already limited time with your dad like that
- 11:39Speaker 1: other office lady was trying to do. Yeah. Yeah. Good points.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Did you like anything else? I did. Okay. Ashley Williams
- 11:47Speaker 1: is damn delightful. She is.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I think she's a great actor. She's got a great smile.
- 11:52Speaker 2: She has stunning eyes.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But... Uh-oh.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Like Notes of Autumn, her energy level is at 100.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I just need her to reign it in. I can't
- 12:03Speaker 2: think of another movie besides Notes of Autumn. And I
- 12:06Speaker 2: know I've seen her in, like, the Sister Swap. I
- 12:08Speaker 2: don't remember her being, like, so, like..
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yes, you do. Go back and listen to your review.
- 12:12Speaker 1: For real? Yeah. Is she the same way? Yeah. Has
- 12:15Speaker 1: she always been like this? I know you said, like,
- 12:17Speaker 1: is this when she was typecast? Is she..
- 12:19Speaker 2: Always like at 100?
- 12:22Speaker 1: I don't think so. Because I watched her in How
- 12:26Speaker 1: I Met Your Mother. Oh. And she's not Mary Poppins
- 12:30Speaker 1: in that. Okay. So I like the energy she brings
- 12:34Speaker 1: because I find often some of these Hallmark movies can
- 12:37Speaker 1: be really low energy. Oh, totally. And I think Sam
- 12:42Speaker 1: kind of plays to the low energy. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Joel. Yeah. Did you immediately clock him as Joel from
- 12:48Speaker 1: Parenthood when you were watching this? Yes, of course. I
- 12:50Speaker 1: was like, yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I just, how do I know him from? As soon
- 12:53Speaker 2: as I looked it up, I was like, of course,
- 12:54Speaker 2: that's Joel. But you know who I get him confused
- 12:56Speaker 2: with sometimes? The guy that played like the hottie love
- 12:59Speaker 2: interest on The Bold Type.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Richard? Yes.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Who is also in Hallmark movies. Sam Page is his name. Yes,
- 13:06Speaker 1: I can see that. So anyway. I like the energy
- 13:08Speaker 1: she brings. It keeps things interesting on screen. And I think...
- 13:13Speaker 1: In this movie, it's true to her character. I mean,
- 13:16Speaker 1: her character cannot be tied down. She bounces from thing
- 13:20Speaker 1: to thing. Can we talk about that? Please.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I mean, it's kind of more in my wished for.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I mean, I have other likes, but... Or do you
- 13:27Speaker 2: want to put a pin in that for a second?
- 13:28Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about it.
- 13:30Speaker 2: So, as I'm watching this, I'm feeling an immense amount
- 13:36Speaker 2: of guilt. And I'm like, I've never been..
- 13:40Speaker 1: I know she's not there..
- 13:42Speaker 2: The mother of these children but she's like playing with
- 13:45Speaker 2: them and like let's go on these adventures and let's
- 13:48Speaker 2: do this fun stuff and I was like oh I
- 13:50Speaker 2: wish I was a parent like that to my child
- 13:54Speaker 2: but then I was like she doesn't also have to
- 13:56Speaker 2: like make dinner and clean the bathroom.
- 13:59Speaker 1: And other other stuff that she's not signing the permission
- 14:03Speaker 1: slips and shopping for the stuff she signed up to
- 14:05Speaker 1: bring for the class party and running their laundry so
- 14:08Speaker 1: they have clothes for soccer practice right What was my
- 14:11Speaker 1: point here? That you feel guilty that you're not the
- 14:13Speaker 1: fun mom. Yeah. And she was like the fun mom nanny. Yes.
- 14:19Speaker 1: And she's getting paid to do the fun stuff. Right.
- 14:21Speaker 2: So do you think now when her and Ryan, the dad,
- 14:25Speaker 2: get together, does she shift into now I'm stepmom? Am
- 14:30Speaker 2: I less fun now? Because now I have to enforce
- 14:32Speaker 2: the rules and enforce behaviors and whatever.
- 14:36Speaker 1: No, I think, look, I'm not a fun mom either.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I know. No, I'm not either. I know. I recognize. Like,
- 14:46Speaker 1: am I the mom who loved pretend play? No, I
- 14:49Speaker 1: hated it. Me too. I hated pretend play. Me too.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You want me to sit and color with you? I
- 14:55Speaker 1: can do that. But here, mommy, you be the bad guy. No, no,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'm out. I can't. It hurts me. I like structured activities. Yeah,
- 15:04Speaker 1: me too. Same. I was never the fun mom. Does
- 15:07Speaker 1: that mean that my kids had a bad childhood? they
- 15:10Speaker 1: found fun in other ways. I don't think it's the
- 15:12Speaker 1: parent's responsibility to- Entertain. Yes, to be the child's entertainer. Now,
- 15:17Speaker 1: if that's something you find joy in, making shopping for
- 15:21Speaker 1: Halloween decorations into a whole event, cool. But I think
- 15:24Speaker 1: there's more than one way to be a good mom. Yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 1: I agree. Yeah, maybe she takes on more responsibility. I
- 15:32Speaker 1: think her personality is to turn everything into an activity.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And my personality is let's get this done. Like I
- 15:40Speaker 1: don't have time for the fun stuff. And I know
- 15:43Speaker 1: I suck, but my kids are teenagers now, so it works.
- 15:46Speaker 1: They don't want to do the fun stuff either. Okay.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I also want to talk about her inability to like
- 15:52Speaker 1: not be able to keep a job. Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I didn't really love that kind of narrative. I know
- 15:59Speaker 2: they needed to like make her free spirited, but.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Is it that she can't keep a job or that
- 16:04Speaker 1: she can't find something she loves? And by the way,
- 16:07Speaker 1: does she find something that she loves other than being
- 16:09Speaker 1: like at the end of this movie? I was like,
- 16:10Speaker 1: wait a minute. Does she have a job or is
- 16:13Speaker 1: she just girlfriend? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I never love it
- 16:19Speaker 1: when we paint a woman as like, she's fun and
- 16:22Speaker 1: therefore unserious at all times. Exactly. That's one of my
- 16:26Speaker 1: biggest pet peeves with some of these movies. You can
- 16:28Speaker 1: be fun and have a drive for finding excitement in
- 16:32Speaker 1: your life and still keep your life together. Can I
- 16:37Speaker 1: give you one more light, please? Aesthetically, I love the
- 16:41Speaker 1: outdoor Halloween decorations. I thought what they did to their
- 16:45Speaker 1: front yard was very cute. Does it make you feel
- 16:47Speaker 1: like you're at home based on the decoration situation happening
- 16:50Speaker 1: on your street?
- 16:52Speaker 2: The decorations happening on my street are downright terrifying as
- 16:55Speaker 2: well as your neighbor's scary big.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Thing out there. Oh, okay, wait. Pause. Is it animated? No,
- 17:00Speaker 1: but it lights up. Like the wand, the scary witch
- 17:03Speaker 1: lights up. There's like a little light at the end
- 17:05Speaker 1: of it. And it's not always on and sometimes it's
- 17:07Speaker 1: on during the day and sometimes it's on at night.
- 17:08Speaker 1: It's weird. It's like it's sentient. Speaking of their decorations. Mm-hmm.
- 17:14Speaker 1: There's not at the nanny house, but at Poppy's sister's house,
- 17:20Speaker 1: which I guess is where she lives. Yeah. They have
- 17:23Speaker 1: a bunch of decorations as well. And one of those decorations,
- 17:25Speaker 1: this was in my digital, but we're talking about it.
- 17:27Speaker 1: There's a mummy like sitting up against a tombstone. Mm-hmm.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It looked like a person. I didn't notice. I was like,
- 17:34Speaker 1: that looks like a body. Yeah.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Like I said, the outdoor decorations were cute, but with that,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I hated the interior cheesy party store decorations, like the
- 17:45Speaker 2: boo sign and the cobwebs all over the kitchen.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Like, no, no, no. Yeah, cobwebs in your kitchen are
- 17:52Speaker 1: a mess. No, no.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And it was even in like his office. I was like,
- 17:55Speaker 2: is he doing like Zoom meetings with like a skeleton
- 17:58Speaker 2: behind it?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Like, so stupid. Yeah. um what did you think of
- 18:03Speaker 1: zoe's halloween costume her cute witch costume they were cute
- 18:06Speaker 1: i don't hate kids i don't hate kids guys i
- 18:11Speaker 1: liked her costume and i liked how she was like
- 18:12Speaker 1: you're not just gonna buy it from the store like
- 18:14Speaker 1: we're gonna make it work i love a homemade costume
- 18:16Speaker 1: i think that's really cute you know what i just
- 18:19Speaker 1: realized i think we have maybe typecasted me as like
- 18:24Speaker 1: a full ogre but Like, I don't like Christmas. I
- 18:28Speaker 1: don't like kids. I'm not fun. I'm really not all
- 18:33Speaker 1: those things, though. I think I am fun and bubbly.
- 18:37Speaker 1: You know, your personality used to be. Used to be what? Fun?
- 18:43Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Tread lightly, my dear. Tread lightly. That's not what I mean.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I don't mean your personality used to be. I mean
- 18:51Speaker 1: the persona that you projected on the internet used to
- 18:56Speaker 1: be like you were the cheerleader. I'm a cheerleader. I
- 18:59Speaker 1: agree with that. That's what I'm saying. I am a cheerleader.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You just know the real me. Sometimes I don't like things.
- 19:05Speaker 1: We're team wet blanket. Exactly. It's okay. That's why we're friends.
- 19:10Speaker 1: It's all right. I'm not an ogre. I like kids, though.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I like children, too. I do like kids. I like
- 19:21Speaker 1: my kid best, but I do like kids. All right,
- 19:34Speaker 1: let's move on to what you wished for. The sister
- 19:37Speaker 1: needs to sim it down. Getting married is not a
- 19:41Speaker 1: required life goal. Like the spinster old maid conversation. Not funny.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Not funny. I was annoyed by that, too. It is
- 19:48Speaker 1: really funny to think of 2015 as the olden days,
- 19:52Speaker 1: but it definitely is in terms of Hallmark standards for women. Oh,
- 19:56Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah. Was the sister even married? I don't
- 20:00Speaker 1: remember seeing a husband. There's never a husband. But she
- 20:03Speaker 1: has children, so it's implied. Ah, I got you. And
- 20:07Speaker 1: she was married at some point at least. Got you.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I hated the whole scene where Ryan comes home to
- 20:14Speaker 2: his kids and has to sit through a beatdown of
- 20:16Speaker 2: why he's a shitty dad.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Dude, can you imagine if your nanny facilitated that? It
- 20:22Speaker 1: was her idea. I know. EFI it. There's no way. Like,
- 20:28Speaker 1: that whole, that, it made me so uncomfortable. It made
- 20:33Speaker 1: me so uncomfortable. She's like, I got this idea. And
- 20:35Speaker 1: then he comes home and they just guilt tripped him. Yes.
- 20:39Speaker 1: He works a lot. He's also a single parent with
- 20:43Speaker 1: a job who needs to provide for these children. Right.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And I get that like he misses out on some things.
- 20:50Speaker 1: What choice does the man have? Right. Right. It's only him.
- 20:55Speaker 1: He's hired this woman who's clearly taking good care of them,
- 20:59Speaker 1: who's showing up for them. I think This is really
- 21:04Speaker 1: problematic in terms of, like, you need to be all
- 21:07Speaker 1: things for your children. And I think we tend to
- 21:09Speaker 1: put this on mothers. So I guess it's, okay, maybe
- 21:12Speaker 1: a little bit better that it's the dad getting this treatment.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But when he has to be all things because he's widowed,
- 21:23Speaker 1: something's got to give kids. And sometimes that means he
- 21:25Speaker 1: can't make it to your daytime Halloween party. Yeah. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: was like, give the guy some slack. Maybe... He does
- 21:32Speaker 1: have a demanding job. But also at this time, he's
- 21:35Speaker 1: trying to get this app sold. He's in a season. Yeah. Like,
- 21:39Speaker 1: got him a break. It doesn't seem to be like,
- 21:43Speaker 1: this is how it's always going to be. He's clearly
- 21:45Speaker 1: on this timeline of getting this app invested in. And
- 21:50Speaker 1: he needs everyone... Like, it's give and take in a family,
- 21:55Speaker 1: even between kids and parents. And he needed to be like, look,
- 21:59Speaker 1: do you like living in this house? Yeah. Sometimes he
- 22:02Speaker 1: needed to throw down the hammer, I think. Yes.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah, because this is when that girl, the daughter, was
- 22:07Speaker 2: getting all snappy when she's on the stairs. And she's like,
- 22:11Speaker 2: you don't ever show up for us. Or I don't know,
- 22:14Speaker 2: whatever she said. And I was like, oh, so frustrating.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah. When Poppy has the conversation about her two different
- 22:22Speaker 1: parenting styles and how she had, like, the mom who
- 22:26Speaker 1: was fun but unreliable. And the stoic dad but who
- 22:29Speaker 1: showed up. Yeah. Okay. But showing up doesn't always mean
- 22:35Speaker 1: you're physically present at everything. I know. Can you imagine
- 22:38Speaker 1: if your nanny was, like, shaming your parenting? No. You're fired.
- 22:42Speaker 1: You're fired. Yes. This is not a good working relationship anymore.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It's not like any of that.
- 22:48Speaker 2: No.
- 22:48Speaker 1: What'd you think about the Abigail love storyline? I think
- 22:52Speaker 1: it's an unnecessary distraction. Me too. And it leads to
- 22:57Speaker 1: an unnecessary miscommunication. She sees them kissing. She makes an
- 23:02Speaker 1: assumption that he's as all in on it as Abigail is.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And then she decides like, oh, this isn't for me.
- 23:07Speaker 1: And then they don't have any conversation. And then... Hallmark
- 23:13Speaker 1: of yesterday. Yes. Yes.
- 23:16Speaker 2: My biggest problem with that whole storyline, I agree, was
- 23:19Speaker 2: not necessary. But also Ryan at some point sees that
- 23:23Speaker 2: Abigail is like not for him.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And doesn't shut it down. Cut it loose, dude. Yes. Yes.
- 23:30Speaker 1: And he's in an awkward position because he works with
- 23:32Speaker 1: this woman. Well, then don't get involved with somebody you
- 23:35Speaker 1: work with. Have the conversation and say, this isn't working
- 23:39Speaker 1: for me. Wow. Time for Jay to say that. I
- 23:42Speaker 1: got a whole bunch. Okay. You can go first though. Okay.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Early in the movie, Poppy and her sister and the
- 23:49Speaker 1: boys are sitting down to dinner and the boys go,
- 23:51Speaker 1: this broccoli is really good, mom.
- 23:53Speaker 2: As if.
- 23:54Speaker 1: We like broccoli in my house. I love broccoli. Your
- 23:57Speaker 1: child liked broccoli from a young age? Yes. Okay. It's
- 24:01Speaker 1: one of the few vegetables she'll eat, but yeah. I
- 24:04Speaker 1: guarantee you, no one in my house. I love broccoli.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Do you ever like roast it with some like olive oil?
- 24:09Speaker 1: I love roasted broccoli. It's so good. It makes your
- 24:11Speaker 1: house smell so bad. Yeah, like farts. It's so delicious.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I love most vegetables, but I didn't as a child
- 24:20Speaker 1: and I just didn't believe it. There's mac and cheese
- 24:23Speaker 1: on that plate and he's talking about the broccoli. Yeah. Also,
- 24:28Speaker 1: there's a family photo on the stairs at Ryan's house. Yes.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And the Photoshop in black and white. It's so bad.
- 24:33Speaker 1: It's so bad. I noticed it too. I just didn't
- 24:36Speaker 1: need it. I was like, today in 2023 with AI,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you can just be like, create me a picture with
- 24:42Speaker 1: these four people. Yeah. And it's going to come out
- 24:45Speaker 1: so much better.
- 24:45Speaker 2: So funny. I have a few things. Ryan tells Poppy
- 24:50Speaker 2: he's 34. Sam Yeager today is 46.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:56Speaker 2: So in 2015, he would have been 38. And I
- 25:00Speaker 2: know four years isn't, like, a huge difference, but why
- 25:04Speaker 2: aren't they true to age?
- 25:07Speaker 1: Yeah, because she is genuinely younger than him. I believe
- 25:10Speaker 1: Ashley Williams is a few years younger than him. A few.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'd look, too. She's just a few years younger. And
- 25:14Speaker 1: she was playing, what, six years younger than him? She
- 25:16Speaker 1: said she was 28 in the movie?
- 25:19Speaker 2: She was, like, making a joke about it, so I
- 25:20Speaker 2: don't really remember how old she was.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Why, if you're close in age to your actual age...
- 25:27Speaker 1: Why not just say how old you are? I don't know.
- 25:29Speaker 1: His app, Food with Friends. Would you ever? No, but
- 25:34Speaker 1: I want to tell you, my husband for a long
- 25:37Speaker 1: time has... My husband's not a... For the listeners. A
- 25:41Speaker 1: tech guy? Yeah, he probably has like three apps on
- 25:43Speaker 1: his phone. Ticketmaster, ESPN. He's not an app dude. But
- 25:50Speaker 1: he's had these two app ideas... For a long time.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And one of them, he has names for them, one
- 25:55Speaker 1: of them. But he's like, you know, when you just
- 25:57Speaker 1: like want a friend to go to a concert with
- 25:59Speaker 1: or whatever it is. Because he loves to go to
- 26:02Speaker 1: concerts and I don't always want to go with him.
- 26:04Speaker 1: So that's what it was born out of. So it
- 26:05Speaker 1: did make me think of that. But would I just
- 26:09Speaker 1: go to dinner with a stranger to make a friend?
- 26:13Speaker 1: That's my understanding is what this is. It's like a
- 26:16Speaker 1: platonic dating app. Basically, so you don't have to eat alone. Yeah.
- 26:20Speaker 1: I'd rather eat alone.
- 26:21Speaker 2: I would rather make awkward conversation. I hate small chit chat.
- 26:25Speaker 2: So no, I don't want to sit across from somebody
- 26:27Speaker 2: while I'm stuffing my face.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Right? I'd rather just sit at the bar. Yes. Or
- 26:34Speaker 1: get it to go. Don't talk to me. On my couch.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Shovel it in as quickly as I can with an
- 26:39Speaker 1: episode of Real Housewives like normal people do. No, I
- 26:44Speaker 1: don't think there's any shame in eating in a restaurant
- 26:45Speaker 1: alone either. No, none. I'm not that interested in meeting
- 26:48Speaker 1: new people. That doesn't apply to any listeners of the podcast.
- 26:52Speaker 1: We'd love to meet you. I just mean I'm not
- 26:55Speaker 1: desperate for interaction to pull up an app. Like you're
- 27:00Speaker 1: confident enough to sit with yourself. Yeah, but I do
- 27:03Speaker 1: think there are people who are like, are you kidding me?
- 27:05Speaker 1: Sitting by myself sounds terrible. I would need to talk
- 27:08Speaker 1: to someone. I sat by myself last night. Yes, you did.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I did. If you are a food with friends potential investor,
- 27:15Speaker 1: email us meganandwendy at gmail.com. All right, I have a
- 27:18Speaker 1: couple other things.
- 27:19Speaker 2: When they're looking for corn, she tells the boy, like,
- 27:24Speaker 2: the best way to look for corn. It's almost like
- 27:27Speaker 2: if you look for a watermelon, you look for, like,
- 27:29Speaker 2: the yellow on one side. I've never heard this advice
- 27:32Speaker 2: for corn.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I think she said, like, look and see if it's
- 27:34Speaker 1: yellow underneath. Yes. Did that mean, like, on the bottom
- 27:38Speaker 1: side of the corn or, like, at the base of
- 27:40Speaker 1: the corn kernel? I don't know. I've never, ever heard
- 27:44Speaker 1: this advice before. I've never heard advice for picking corn.
- 27:46Speaker 1: It's usually unshucked. So how are you supposed to know?
- 27:50Speaker 1: Are people peeling the husk back in a grocery store?
- 27:53Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think you'd want it shucked
- 27:56Speaker 1: like it was in that display. It's going to start
- 27:57Speaker 1: to dry out, isn't it? Maybe. Corn dock with Megan
- 28:00Speaker 1: and Wendy.
- 28:01Speaker 2: What was funny, though, is that she did not follow
- 28:03Speaker 2: her own advice. She was just, like, throwing them in
- 28:06Speaker 2: her arms. Like, not looking behind. Including her popcorn. She
- 28:10Speaker 2: had that big bucket of popcorn and then left it behind.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I was like, what? They are shopping for Halloween decorations.
- 28:16Speaker 2: They're at like Party City or whatever. And they come
- 28:19Speaker 2: across like the pumpkin carving kits. She's like, we need three.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Only grabs two.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Thought it was funny. When they are baking cookies, she
- 28:27Speaker 1: says she doesn't believe in measuring. I'm like, no, ma'am.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Baking is a science. Exactly. It must be measured or
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's going to come out terrible. Yeah. You don't need
- 28:36Speaker 1: to measure in cooking, but baking is pretty important. And
- 28:41Speaker 1: the most nicely decorated cookies you've ever seen in your
- 28:43Speaker 1: entire life. A hundred percent. Yeah. There's no way it
- 28:48Speaker 1: would have been more believable if they were a complete disaster.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Because this woman, according to the character you've built for her,
- 28:56Speaker 1: can't focus on anything for long enough. So you're telling
- 28:58Speaker 1: me we have decorated cookies, Wendy and I. They didn't
- 29:03Speaker 1: look like that. They looked okay. They looked great. Okay.
- 29:07Speaker 1: But they didn't. Those were professional level. We'll include a
- 29:10Speaker 1: photo of some of our decorated cookies in the show notes.
- 29:12Speaker 1: But I mean, it took us an hour and a
- 29:15Speaker 1: half to do six, and they're just, like, churning them out.
- 29:17Speaker 1: They've got trays and trays of these beautifully decorated flood
- 29:20Speaker 1: royal icing cookies. Right. With children involved. Not happening. She's like,
- 29:24Speaker 1: don't touch. You're going to ruin it. That's why I'm
- 29:28Speaker 1: no fun. I would be, like, so, like, trying to
- 29:32Speaker 1: oversee the cookie decorating. Nope. Finally, at the pumpkin patch
- 29:37Speaker 1: toward the end, Ryan and Poppy.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Lift what is clearly a huge fake styrofoam pumpkin.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And then they had to ADR the sound of it
- 29:47Speaker 1: thumping into the... So dumb.
- 29:49Speaker 2: And then they are scraping the seeds out of it,
- 29:52Speaker 2: this fake pumpkin.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Like, it... And it must have cost $ 150. How much
- 29:56Speaker 1: is a pumpkin that size that the pumpkin patch cost?
- 29:57Speaker 1: First of all, never buy your pumpkin at the pumpkin patch.
- 30:00Speaker 1: It's too expensive. Go to the grocery store.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Unless you're buying like a little baby pumpkin, but not
- 30:04Speaker 2: something that is clearly going to be $ 150. Go take
- 30:08Speaker 2: your pictures at the pumpkin patch and buy your pumpkins at.
- 30:11Speaker 1: The grocery store. That's right. All right. Are you ready
- 30:13Speaker 1: to rate this movie? Vibes only, 3.5 stars. That's my,
- 30:20Speaker 1: it was fine rating. We need a shirt. I'm going.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I give it three stars. Hey, if you love Ashley Williams,
