- 0:18Speaker 1: Good morning, and welcome into Jags am Brian Sexson along
- 0:21Speaker 1: with John Osier here on a Tuesday morning, and we're
- 0:23Speaker 1: changing things up a little bit, not just a different
- 0:25Speaker 1: host today, but we're starting with the head coach of
- 0:28Speaker 1: the Jaguars, Liam Cohen, who joined us from the NFL's
- 0:31Speaker 1: owners meetings in Phoenix, Arizona. The owners meetings began on
- 0:35Speaker 1: Sunday evening. There's lots to talk about, and of course
- 0:38Speaker 1: we'll get to those things, but first we bring in
- 0:40Speaker 1: the head coach. Coach, how are you.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Great, Brian, appreciate it man, Thanks for having me on.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Thank you for making time for us this morning. Hey,
- 0:47Speaker 1: just generally, how's the pace of your second off season
- 0:51Speaker 1: or actually your first off season, your second spring with
- 0:54Speaker 1: the Jaguars. How different is it for you this year
- 0:57Speaker 1: than it was last year when you put your feet
- 0:58Speaker 1: on the ground.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Lot different.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I'll say this is probably the first off season Ashley
- 1:04Speaker 3: and I and the family has had and roughly five
- 1:06Speaker 3: to six years, so to have a little bit of
- 1:09Speaker 3: a schedule or routine, some stability that involves pouring into football,
- 1:15Speaker 3: one at the office and with the coaching staff, but
- 1:18Speaker 3: also having an opportunity to be a husband and be
- 1:21Speaker 3: a father and be able to spend some time with
- 1:24Speaker 3: the family at nights. Is definitely nice to have to
- 1:27Speaker 3: have some consistency throughout an off season without moving and
- 1:30Speaker 3: restarting and picking up and being apart from your family.
- 1:35Speaker 2: It's been great to have so far.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Coach, we talked a little bit earlier this off season
- 1:40Speaker 4: about the whole idea of coming back. But you would
- 1:45Speaker 4: think that you had a longer off season because you're here,
- 1:49Speaker 4: But you don't really look at it that way. You
- 1:50Speaker 4: look at it more like, hey, we're losing a week
- 1:52Speaker 4: or two because of the rules that you can't get
- 1:55Speaker 4: with these guys because you're not a new coach anymore.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Talk about your pace of the off season, what you're
- 1:59Speaker 4: trying to get done.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely, you know, you feel a little bit
- 2:06Speaker 3: of a sense of urgency.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I mean, there's there's no question in my mind.
- 2:10Speaker 3: That's been the challenge to the coaching staff, to our
- 2:13Speaker 3: our department staffs at the building, the message has been,
- 2:18Speaker 3: and when the players getting in here, the message will be,
- 2:22Speaker 3: how do we improve how do we get better with
- 2:24Speaker 3: less time together flat out, less time together as a staff,
- 2:27Speaker 3: less time together once the players get in here, and
- 2:31Speaker 3: and and so our time on task, our intentionality has
- 2:35Speaker 3: to be better than ever. And that's the challenge that
- 2:39Speaker 3: I have for everybody and myself included. So that's something
- 2:42Speaker 3: that you work through and in the way that you
- 2:44Speaker 3: schedule out your off season program and plan and uh,
- 2:48Speaker 3: the amount of repetition, the amount of time on each drill,
- 2:51Speaker 3: and where you're allocating your time and and so those
- 2:54Speaker 3: are all the things that we've been looking at and
- 2:56Speaker 3: certainly excited to get these players back in the building
- 2:59Speaker 3: here soon so we can really start football.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You know, momentum never carries over from one season to
- 3:03Speaker 1: the next. Though most observers fans also kind of think, well,
- 3:06Speaker 1: we were thirteen and four. How do you change that
- 3:10Speaker 1: mindset or do you have to do these guys understand
- 3:12Speaker 1: that the boulder's back at the bottom of the mountain.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Time to push again.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Yeah, there's nothing that we're defending. We're attacking everything that
- 3:21Speaker 3: we're doing. That's the mindset of mentality. We could, you know, theoretically,
- 3:26Speaker 3: we could get better as a football team and not
- 3:29Speaker 3: win thirteen games like That's something that we have to
- 3:32Speaker 3: be prepared for. We have to understand because if we
- 3:36Speaker 3: live in those results of last year, this ain't going
- 3:40Speaker 3: to be a fun process and we won't like what
- 3:42Speaker 3: we see.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I gotta believe that.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So everything that we attack from this offseason moving forward,
- 3:48Speaker 3: as we go into this new regular season here, it's
- 3:53Speaker 3: all brand new. I mean, yes, there's going to be
- 3:55Speaker 3: some ability to start at ground one or in different
- 4:01Speaker 3: levels of your offense, defense and special teams, your systems.
- 4:05Speaker 3: But there's going to be new players, there's new coaches,
- 4:07Speaker 3: there's new relationships and communication ways that we need to operate.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And so if we attack it the same way as
- 4:14Speaker 3: last year and we just said, well we already made
- 4:16Speaker 3: that relationship, we already had that connection, well that's going
- 4:20Speaker 3: to be a different connection on this team, because every
- 4:23Speaker 3: team is different.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Coach, I know you spoke with our guy Ryan o'
- 4:28Speaker 4: holland at the Times Union yesterday. I think my favorite
- 4:31Speaker 4: thing that I heard from that was you talking about
- 4:33Speaker 4: not letting the stink of winning overwhelm the stink of
- 4:37Speaker 4: something else. I love the way you put that clearly that's.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Important to you this offseason.
- 4:42Speaker 4: It sort of ties into the last question, anything specific
- 4:46Speaker 4: that you're addressing along those lines, and that's you're focus
- 4:49Speaker 4: along those lines.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I said that winning is a fantastic deodorant.
- 4:53Speaker 3: It covers up what stinks about you. It covers up
- 4:56Speaker 3: what your blind spots are, what your negatives, what your
- 5:00Speaker 3: areas of improvement are.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And if we can attack.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Those areas with humility, with honesty, with a relentless pursuit
- 5:08Speaker 3: to improve those areas, then we'll still continue to work
- 5:12Speaker 3: on the areas in which we were good, and we
- 5:14Speaker 3: need to hone in on those things. But look, we're
- 5:17Speaker 3: always looking for better balance on offense, right.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I think the run.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Game for the first eight weeks of the season really
- 5:22Speaker 3: kind of carried us offensively and allowed us to win
- 5:25Speaker 3: some of those games. And then the past game the
- 5:28Speaker 3: second half of the season really allowed us to go offensively,
- 5:31Speaker 3: and so we have to create a little bit more
- 5:33Speaker 3: balance there defensively, just continuing to find that balance between
- 5:39Speaker 3: Russian coverage and being a play a little bit. A
- 5:42Speaker 3: couple of different coverages in the back end, couple couple
- 5:45Speaker 3: of different front structures or pressures that you're looking at
- 5:47Speaker 3: and looking at, you know, adding in player acquisition throughout
- 5:52Speaker 3: the draft and free agency and drades, you're you're looking
- 5:54Speaker 3: at all those things during this time, so and then
- 5:57Speaker 3: special teams wise, we're constantly getting new rule proposals throughout
- 6:02Speaker 3: from the league, and so how does that affect your
- 6:04Speaker 3: formations and your schemes and your fundamentals that you're coaching.
- 6:07Speaker 2: So it's a lot.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I mean, it's never like we're just walking through a
- 6:11Speaker 3: day kind of just going through.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The motions hoping to go home.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I mean, that's not the atmosphere we want to be
- 6:17Speaker 3: in and that's not how we're operating.
- 6:21Speaker 4: We haven't talked to you since you signed Chris Rodriguez.
- 6:24Speaker 4: How does he help specifically in the running game? A
- 6:27Speaker 4: different style than Travis etn was, but I know you
- 6:32Speaker 4: like what he can bring in terms of down and distant,
- 6:34Speaker 4: situational consistency, things along those lines.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I think like losing a player like TJ a
- 6:40Speaker 3: first round pick, the ability in the run of the
- 6:44Speaker 3: past and some of the production, like that's going to
- 6:46Speaker 3: be hard to match for anybody, right. But what I
- 6:50Speaker 3: always really appreciated about se rod you know, when working
- 6:53Speaker 3: with him in Kentucky and then following his career over
- 6:56Speaker 3: the last few years, has been is, you know, rushing
- 6:58Speaker 3: yards over expected and these yards after contact.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean, I think those are the two areas that
- 7:03Speaker 2: you look.
- 7:04Speaker 3: At where you say, like did you get more or
- 7:08Speaker 3: about what the play was blocked for? And are people
- 7:12Speaker 3: bouncing off for you? Do you know how to make
- 7:14Speaker 3: people miss? Like, how do you make people miss? There's
- 7:16Speaker 3: a lot of different ways to do that, And how
- 7:18Speaker 3: do you gain the yards? There's a lot of different
- 7:20Speaker 3: ways to skin that cat. And ultimately for me and
- 7:23Speaker 3: for the type of style of team we want to
- 7:25Speaker 3: be to be able to punch you in the mouth
- 7:27Speaker 3: and get those some of those hard yards. Getting a
- 7:30Speaker 3: guy like Chris to complement that room as it stands
- 7:33Speaker 3: right now with two in Lequin and DJ and you
- 7:37Speaker 3: know those guys. So we're just trying to continue to
- 7:39Speaker 3: add good football players in there.
- 7:41Speaker 1: How about one final thought, coach, The draft is twenty
- 7:43Speaker 1: three days away, a little more than three weeks. You
- 7:46Speaker 1: have eleven picks, four on Night two of the draft,
- 7:50Speaker 1: which is first night for the Jags without a first
- 7:52Speaker 1: round pick. Plus you have that keeping your attention. You
- 7:55Speaker 1: get some guys back this year from the draft class
- 7:58Speaker 1: last year who really weren't able to contribute because of injuries.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Caleb brand Saw stands out the second half of the season,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you didn't have Travis Hunter. Just a thought on getting
- 8:05Speaker 1: some of those guys back on the field in year
- 8:07Speaker 1: two for them.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we're excited about some of the second year players
- 8:10Speaker 3: that you know, whether they were able to contribute last
- 8:13Speaker 3: year or not, but specifically the Caleb rand Saws right,
- 8:17Speaker 3: Jaylen McLeod didn't didn't wasn't able to play much. Getting
- 8:21Speaker 3: Jack Kaiser a year better, right, Getting Travis Hunter another
- 8:25Speaker 3: year doing different things, and how we you know, fine
- 8:29Speaker 3: tune his role and schedule and and the way that
- 8:32Speaker 3: we look at those things. On offense, Wyatt Milham, you know,
- 8:36Speaker 3: Joonah Manheim, A lot of young players that are we're
- 8:39Speaker 3: continuing to see hopeful ascension from that can come and
- 8:43Speaker 3: either be contributors or competitors for playing time.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Three weeks for your players back three weeks to the draft.
- 8:50Speaker 1: A lot coming up. Coach. We really appreciate you making
- 8:53Speaker 1: some time on a busy Tuesday morning in Arizona.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I appreciate you guys, thanks for having me on.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Have a great day. That's the head coach Jaguars coming
- 9:00Speaker 1: off at thirteen and four season and as he famously
- 9:03Speaker 1: has said, trying to wipe off the stink of wins
- 9:06Speaker 1: and making sure his team is ready to go out
- 9:08Speaker 1: and play their best football in the fall of twenty
- 9:11Speaker 1: twenty six. When we come back a little normalcy for you.
- 9:13Speaker 1: We have big things next on jags Am. Welcome back
- 9:22Speaker 1: to jags Am. Brian Sexton in today for Kay Stevens.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Great to start the show. We've head coach Liam Cohen,
- 9:29Speaker 1: so now we get the big things. Big thing one
- 9:32Speaker 1: is Arizona, which is where Liam Cohen joined us from.
- 9:35Speaker 1: There are not huge stories that are breaking this week
- 9:39Speaker 1: from Arizona, but there are some of concern John A
- 9:42Speaker 1: couple that stand out. Obviously. The story now is that
- 9:44Speaker 1: the NFL is moving to hire replacement officials. I'm not
- 9:48Speaker 1: sure how many fans have been following this or how closely,
- 9:51Speaker 1: but the end of the CBA between the players of Apartment,
- 9:55Speaker 1: the NFL and the NFL Referees Association is at the
- 9:58Speaker 1: end of May, and unlike too twenty twelve the last
- 10:01Speaker 1: time this happened, they're not waiting until July to hire
- 10:03Speaker 1: replacement officials. They're moving on those right now.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Look, most of the things that go on and these
- 10:10Speaker 4: negotiations are very behind the scenes because that's how they
- 10:13Speaker 4: want it. But this week, before the owners meetings got started,
- 10:17Speaker 4: there have been reports that the negotiations for the new
- 10:20Speaker 4: CBA aren't going well. It was disastrous in the first
- 10:25Speaker 4: month of twenty twelve, which is the last time they
- 10:27Speaker 4: had replacement reps, and the league believes that's because they
- 10:33Speaker 4: didn't hire them in time. They're trying to be more
- 10:36Speaker 4: proactive on it and get them in place sooner. There's
- 10:41Speaker 4: also a clause to have replay involved, which we'll get to.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Look the reports that were out this week don't sound
- 10:52Speaker 4: very encouraging on a deal getting done because they seem.
- 10:55Speaker 5: Far apart on a lot of things.
- 10:57Speaker 4: One of the things is that the lead league wants
- 11:01Speaker 4: them available more during their downtime in the off season
- 11:05Speaker 4: to train. There's talk about full time officials in this. Brian,
- 11:10Speaker 4: you probably know where I'm going with this. I'm not
- 11:12Speaker 4: a big full time official guy. I don't believe that
- 11:15Speaker 4: officials miss calls because they don't know the rules. I
- 11:18Speaker 4: don't know how else having them full time is going
- 11:20Speaker 4: to benefit anything.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Because I think the officials are already really good.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I don't know how they get better from me in
- 11:25Speaker 4: full time I'm sort of tangenting. It's an emotional topic
- 11:28Speaker 4: for me. Brian, Well, but yeah, it's a thing. It
- 11:32Speaker 4: was not good in twenty twelve, and the NFL is
- 11:35Speaker 4: trying to get ahead of it to make what was
- 11:38Speaker 4: a bad situation a little better.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So one of the questions that naturally rises in this
- 11:42Speaker 1: debate is would you rather have a perfectly officiated game
- 11:45Speaker 1: using some automation right, some AI, if you will. Soccer
- 11:49Speaker 1: uses a bit of it, Baseball has a touch of
- 11:50Speaker 1: it with their automated balls and strikes, or would you
- 11:53Speaker 1: rather have a game with the human element involved in it? See,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and this is where we're going with this. You touch
- 12:00Speaker 1: on replay expansion. They're talking about allowing league staff in
- 12:04Speaker 1: support of the replacement officials, So there's an element of foreshadowing.
- 12:09Speaker 1: They're telling you where they think they're headed. Allowing league
- 12:12Speaker 1: staffers in New York to be able to offer guidance
- 12:16Speaker 1: on penalties that may have appeared flagrant fouls or things
- 12:20Speaker 1: that might not be a penalty, so that they don't
- 12:22Speaker 1: negatively impact the game.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I expect that they will go that route. If
- 12:30Speaker 4: there's replacement officials, I expect that it will sound very
- 12:36Speaker 4: good leading up to it, and I don't know how
- 12:39Speaker 4: it looks in real time, meaning are you know, I
- 12:42Speaker 4: hope Holdings not involved, because you're going to get pushing
- 12:48Speaker 4: buttons and back and forth on every play. If that's
- 12:50Speaker 4: the case, are you doing past interference? Because pass interference
- 12:53Speaker 4: can be disastrous if you start opening a can of worms.
- 12:56Speaker 4: So meaning everybody thinks the other guy was interfering on
- 12:59Speaker 4: a play. So I think that sounds really good. I
- 13:04Speaker 4: don't know how it looks in fact, and I think
- 13:07Speaker 4: that could look as clunky as what was on the
- 13:11Speaker 4: field in twenty twelve could look. Because anytime you bring
- 13:16Speaker 4: officiating change into a group that already does a really
- 13:19Speaker 4: good job, you're gonna notice it. If you bring less
- 13:23Speaker 4: experienced guys in the NFL officials. I know it's not
- 13:26Speaker 4: vogue to say when everybody wants to criticize him on Twitter,
- 13:29Speaker 4: but they do a good job, and I'm not sure
- 13:33Speaker 4: the system needs to be reset.
- 13:35Speaker 1: The deadline is May thirty first, and we'll see if
- 13:38Speaker 1: they can get a deal done. Big thing too is Orlando.
- 13:41Speaker 1: A story broke on Sunday in the Orlando Business Journal.
- 13:45Speaker 1: They quoted Steve Hogan, the president and CEO of the
- 13:47Speaker 1: Florida's Citrus Sports Commission, and he's wrote that he hopes
- 13:51Speaker 1: that the vote is next week, meeting today and they
- 13:54Speaker 1: get a minimum of seven games here. He says, that's
- 13:57Speaker 1: the plan, but we need to get that vote. The
- 14:00Speaker 1: vote should come this afternoon. We plan to have a
- 14:02Speaker 1: celebration downtown in front of city Hall and hope that
- 14:06Speaker 1: somebody walks out of that room in Phoenix and goes, yes,
- 14:09Speaker 1: we're doing this here. So that all leads up to
- 14:12Speaker 1: the fact that today we expect a vote on where
- 14:14Speaker 1: the Jaguars will play in twenty twenty seven. John, It's
- 14:17Speaker 1: been something we talked about for weeks and months, but
- 14:20Speaker 1: they've got to get a vote here quickly because there's
- 14:22Speaker 1: a lot of work to do for the team, whether
- 14:25Speaker 1: they're going to games but or Orlando, there are a
- 14:27Speaker 1: lot of moving pieces that have to be put in
- 14:29Speaker 1: place to be ready for that, even though it's a
- 14:31Speaker 1: year and a half away.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Yeah, the outside tee Lea's and reports, I'll say, Orlando,
- 14:37Speaker 4: I guess that's the favorite. We haven't discussed it a
- 14:40Speaker 4: whole lot here on this show because there hasn't been
- 14:42Speaker 4: a whole lot to discuss until you actually get news.
- 14:45Speaker 4: But logistically, yeah, we're, what now, fourteen to fifteen months
- 14:50Speaker 4: out from wherever they're going to play, and it's a
- 14:53Speaker 4: mammoth lift to put on an NFL game, So it
- 14:57Speaker 4: is it going to be Orlando? You know, perhaps that's
- 14:59Speaker 4: fine and if so.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Look forward to it.
- 15:02Speaker 4: But from a behind the scenes perspective, this is a
- 15:06Speaker 4: lift when you're moving home base two and a half
- 15:09Speaker 4: hours away to a different world, which is camping world.
- 15:13Speaker 5: So did they ran?
- 15:14Speaker 1: I appreciate that, aboudy, But when.
- 15:16Speaker 4: You're moving everything, the sixteen months seems like a long time,
- 15:21Speaker 4: but it'll go by fast.
- 15:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of anticipation obviously in Orlando to see
- 15:26Speaker 1: whether or not the vote goes their way. Again that
- 15:29Speaker 1: story in Sunday's Orlando Business Journal. And we move to
- 15:32Speaker 1: our final big thing, and that's twenty three days. That's
- 15:36Speaker 1: the number of days between now and the NFL Draft.
- 15:39Speaker 1: The Draguars will not participate, at least at this moment,
- 15:42Speaker 1: on the first night of the draft, which is Thursday,
- 15:45Speaker 1: April twenty third, but they have four picks fifty six,
- 15:48Speaker 1: eighty one, eighty eight, and one hundred in rounds two
- 15:52Speaker 1: and three. John. We talked about it a little bit
- 15:54Speaker 1: with coach Cohen in the top of the show. They've
- 15:57Speaker 1: got a lot of things they can do in terms
- 15:59Speaker 1: of roster construction, but for the first time in franchise history,
- 16:03Speaker 1: doesn't appear they're going to do it in the first
- 16:04Speaker 1: thirty two picks.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's not only no they have a first
- 16:08Speaker 4: round pick, but then they played so well this last season.
- 16:11Speaker 5: The good news is that was fun.
- 16:15Speaker 4: The quote unquote bad news is that it's hard to
- 16:18Speaker 4: even get close to the first round. With that, I'm
- 16:20Speaker 4: being facetious. That's not bad news at all. You want
- 16:22Speaker 4: to be picking as low in rounds.
- 16:24Speaker 5: As you can.
- 16:25Speaker 4: But I think the key here, Brian is if you
- 16:30Speaker 4: believe that you draft for needs, which I'm not big
- 16:32Speaker 4: on that, but if you want this team to fill
- 16:35Speaker 4: some holes. Outside linebacker feels like a place where they
- 16:39Speaker 4: could draft. It's really good right around the area they're
- 16:44Speaker 4: picking a fifty six. Are they going safety? Are they
- 16:49Speaker 4: going some of these other positions. Running Back is also
- 16:51Speaker 4: a position you can get productivity later in the draft.
- 16:56Speaker 4: People are focusing on the fact they do in a
- 16:58Speaker 4: first round pick, but as you alluded to, when you
- 17:00Speaker 4: were talking to Liam. Having four in the top one
- 17:03Speaker 4: hundred gives you a lot of equity in what many
- 17:08Speaker 4: consider the sweet spot of the draft, which is the
- 17:10Speaker 4: second round. And I think James Gladstone can get a
- 17:15Speaker 4: lot done with picks in that range. It's certainly what
- 17:19Speaker 4: he was banking on when they traded when they traded
- 17:22Speaker 4: four Travis Hunter last offseason.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And just to touch on that, John, I think there
- 17:25Speaker 1: should be some legitimate excitement about three of those four
- 17:28Speaker 1: picks from the first two to three rounds last year
- 17:30Speaker 1: four rounds actually being available on defense. You talked about
- 17:34Speaker 1: Travis Hunter, and we can debate what his role will
- 17:36Speaker 1: be going forward, but it sure seems like defense will
- 17:39Speaker 1: be a bigger part of it. You get Caleb branstaw
- 17:41Speaker 1: back and we didn't barely see him at all last year.
- 17:44Speaker 1: And the safety from Tulane should be on the field
- 17:46Speaker 1: in May and Jaylen mcloudy outside linebacker, that rushbacker kind
- 17:51Speaker 1: of guy who could be one of Devin Lloyd's replacements.
- 17:54Speaker 1: There's not just eleven picks coming in, but some picks
- 17:56Speaker 1: from last year that could be significant upgrades.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's uh.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I think what you want to get to is where
- 18:05Speaker 4: People are talking about your draft class the moment you drafted,
- 18:10Speaker 4: and then maybe one or two guys during the season,
- 18:12Speaker 4: But it's your second year guys who should really be
- 18:15Speaker 4: accelerating during a season. And I think a huge storyline
- 18:21Speaker 4: for the Jaguars will be how particularly Ransaw and Hunter,
- 18:24Speaker 4: the secondary had some issues late last year. People see
- 18:28Speaker 4: it all the draftnicks see it as a need. You
- 18:31Speaker 4: see cornerback and safety drafted all over the place. I
- 18:34Speaker 4: think there may be forgetting in a lot of cases
- 18:37Speaker 4: that they've got to, you know, to day one and
- 18:41Speaker 4: two picks coming in and they expect to really improve
- 18:44Speaker 4: the secondary. So to me, that's the storyline more than
- 18:47Speaker 4: the draft this year.
- 18:48Speaker 1: All right, more from John as we go into the ozhow,
- 18:50Speaker 1: which is up next on this morning, the dish of drag.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah this.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Frity.
- 19:06Speaker 1: All right, let's jump into the ozone here on a
- 19:08Speaker 1: Tuesday morning. Welcome back to jag Z A M. Brian
- 19:11Speaker 1: Sexton along with the ozone John Osier. John will start
- 19:15Speaker 1: in London. Nick wrote to you and wants to know
- 19:19Speaker 1: the opponents are probably harder this year. There's significant dead cap.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Is this season looking more like eleven and six is
- 19:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven the better prospect for success, and eleven
- 19:30Speaker 1: and six seems pretty successful to me.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think that's one thing that people need
- 19:34Speaker 4: to remember this. I guess there are a couple of
- 19:37Speaker 4: aspects of this question. They were interesting. You know, thirteen
- 19:40Speaker 4: and four is great season. You go twelve and five,
- 19:44Speaker 4: eleven and six. You know, if this team's going to
- 19:47Speaker 4: go on a run, which which I think they can,
- 19:49Speaker 4: I meaning you have Trevor Lawrence, you have your head
- 19:52Speaker 4: coach in place. The idea is it is to reel
- 19:56Speaker 4: off six or seven playoff appearances in a row and
- 19:59Speaker 4: make it's an era, right, that's what we all want.
- 20:02Speaker 5: If you do that, it's very rare for all.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Seasons in a run like that to be twelve and
- 20:10Speaker 4: five and up or twelve wins and up. The Colts
- 20:13Speaker 4: teams I covered, I think they had seven or eight
- 20:15Speaker 4: straight twelve wins seasons.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Well, that doesn't that didn't happen.
- 20:19Speaker 4: So if you're gonna have a run like that some years,
- 20:21Speaker 4: remember the Chiefs a couple of years ago.
- 20:23Speaker 5: When eleven and six won the Super Bowl.
- 20:25Speaker 4: So eleven and six, depending on how the season goes,
- 20:28Speaker 4: if you have injuries, if you overcome some stuff that's
- 20:30Speaker 4: not unsuccessful, first of all, But the implication there is,
- 20:37Speaker 4: you know, it is the first place schedule gonna cause
- 20:40Speaker 4: such a problem that you're looking at having success in
- 20:42Speaker 4: twenty seven. I don't really feel that I understand where
- 20:47Speaker 4: it's coming from. And yes, it will be harder, but
- 20:50Speaker 4: the key point to that to me is sometimes a
- 20:54Speaker 4: team with a first place schedule will dip. But last
- 20:58Speaker 4: year the Jaguars beat San Francisco, the Chargers, the Texans,
- 21:04Speaker 4: the Chiefs when they were good, the Broncos on the road.
- 21:09Speaker 4: It's not like this team last year got into the
- 21:12Speaker 4: playoffs sort of sneaking.
- 21:14Speaker 5: By with that fourth place schedule.
- 21:16Speaker 4: So I don't know that there's any reason to think
- 21:18Speaker 4: that they can't go compete against the best. So the
- 21:21Speaker 4: premise makes sense because that does happen. But this team
- 21:26Speaker 4: doesn't feel like it's gonna get like punched because it's
- 21:30Speaker 4: not used to the competition. That didn't feel like what
- 21:33Speaker 4: that division title was to me last year.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Well, and hopefully Nick had a chance to hear the
- 21:36Speaker 1: coach off the top of the show where he said
- 21:38Speaker 1: we could be a better football team, played better football
- 21:42Speaker 1: and not win thirteen games. Obviously, that is something that
- 21:45Speaker 1: happens over time. Next question from Sean in North Carolina.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Do you think the reason Trayvon Walker hasn't been resigned
- 21:53Speaker 1: yet is because the front office wants to see how
- 21:55Speaker 1: the draft unfolds and did the Jags pick up Anton
- 21:59Speaker 1: Harrison's fit year option. James Gladstone said to Rhinal hollerin
- 22:02Speaker 1: yesterday that they did.
- 22:03Speaker 4: They will officially, they haven't done it yet, but yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 4: they got that out of the way decision making in
- 22:10Speaker 4: their head. Wise, Look, I think I think the reason
- 22:14Speaker 4: that Trayvon hasn't been resigned yet is because it's going
- 22:18Speaker 4: to be a mammoth contract, perhaps second only to Trevor
- 22:22Speaker 4: Lawrence's in the franchise's history. Maybe there'll be a couple others,
- 22:25Speaker 4: but it's going to be one of the ones he
- 22:27Speaker 4: did to shape the cap around.
- 22:29Speaker 5: So I think that's more the question.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Originally, I don't know if this is the one we
- 22:37Speaker 4: use on the air, sort of implied that they may
- 22:39Speaker 4: be looking for his replacement in the draft, trying to
- 22:43Speaker 4: figure out a direction other than Trayvon. I don't think
- 22:47Speaker 4: that's the case at all. This team values Trayvon. He
- 22:51Speaker 4: is a core player. That you won around for a
- 22:55Speaker 4: long time. It's going to be one of the salary
- 22:59Speaker 4: cap piece is that forms the foundation of the cap
- 23:02Speaker 4: that you have to work around. So it's a big
- 23:05Speaker 4: it's a big contract that doesn't always get done in
- 23:08Speaker 4: the first text on the group chat, we've.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Seen a lot of these. Do you have a sense
- 23:12Speaker 1: of when we might it's just a you know, the
- 23:14Speaker 1: week of training camp like they did with having Ingram
- 23:17Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, late summer, sort of take
- 23:20Speaker 1: your time work through it, or could there be something
- 23:22Speaker 1: that we don't see until the middle of the season.
- 23:24Speaker 4: You know it's I think it will be one where
- 23:30Speaker 4: my senses they've started meaning I think they've talked to
- 23:33Speaker 4: the other people involved. I would think they would have.
- 23:37Speaker 4: They've started out. I don't think there's animosity between the sides.
- 23:41Speaker 4: I think both are coming in with the idea want
- 23:43Speaker 4: to get it done. My conversations with Trayvon have always
- 23:46Speaker 4: been that he wants to be here. Money is certainly
- 23:49Speaker 4: an object, as it would be for anybody. But I
- 23:53Speaker 4: would guess there's some casual back and forth trying to
- 23:57Speaker 4: get in the right world, meaning, hey, you know we're
- 24:01Speaker 4: looking at it like this you're looking at it like this.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I don't have a great feel for time frame because
- 24:07Speaker 4: these things people want to say that things get done
- 24:10Speaker 4: at a certain time.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Things usually get done because of a deadline.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I would guess this gets done before the end of
- 24:17Speaker 4: next season. But I don't think there's necessarily a reason
- 24:20Speaker 4: to have a time frame thought, because I'm not sure
- 24:23Speaker 4: that either side feels that much urgency, except if you're traveon.
- 24:27Speaker 5: You want to get the money.
- 24:29Speaker 4: But I say that's sort of Fastially, there was a
- 24:31Speaker 4: little bit of urgency, But for him, the other side
- 24:35Speaker 4: is here's here's number one overall pick. So I think,
- 24:40Speaker 4: knowing Trayvon, the bank account's probably still okay.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So it was making fifteen million dollars this year on
- 24:45Speaker 1: the fifty year ound.
- 24:46Speaker 4: So some young guys who like, if he had been
- 24:49Speaker 4: a six round pick, then all of a sudden, you
- 24:52Speaker 4: want the life changing dough, you know.
- 24:54Speaker 5: I don't speak for Trayvon. He'd be his life.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Changed when he got drafted. Now it's it's more a
- 25:00Speaker 4: long term deal. Again, I don't think he's going to
- 25:03Speaker 4: be checking his b of a app to make sure
- 25:06Speaker 4: when the check cash is so that he can go
- 25:08Speaker 4: by lunch.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Negotiations are always easier when you can be patient.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think that's really a more succinct way.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Odd that you would be this succinct to me, but yes,
- 25:19Speaker 4: I think that's I think that's a more direct approach.
- 25:22Speaker 1: All right. Finally, Stephen from fruit Cove Rights, the Jaguars
- 25:25Speaker 1: at number fifty six overall will have a lot of
- 25:28Speaker 1: pardon me, have to spend a lot to get into
- 25:30Speaker 1: the bottom of round one. It's a good thing they
- 25:33Speaker 1: have a lot to spend. Here's hoping Stephen. John doesn't
- 25:36Speaker 1: appear to be comfortable with the idea of the first
- 25:38Speaker 1: draft without the Jaguars first round pick in their history.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Yeah, and we've.
- 25:46Speaker 4: The draft has been so important to this fan base
- 25:48Speaker 4: for so long, more important than it should have been,
- 25:52Speaker 4: meaning that was, in many years the only fun it had.
- 25:55Speaker 4: So the idea of not having a first round pick,
- 25:59Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, we don't have the shiny toy.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Some years, you know, the shiny toy.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Now we're getting into a phase of Jaguars history where
- 26:10Speaker 4: the draft should be put back in where it's supposed
- 26:13Speaker 4: to be, which is a nice offseason event that builds
- 26:16Speaker 4: for the future. But this year's draft doesn't necessarily have
- 26:21Speaker 4: to be a major thing what happens on the field
- 26:23Speaker 4: next year. It needs to be major moving forward. So
- 26:28Speaker 4: I don't necessarily know that for the Jaguar's sake, meaning
- 26:33Speaker 4: the long term benefit of the franchise, if there needs
- 26:36Speaker 4: to be this, oh my goodness, we have to figure
- 26:39Speaker 4: out a way to get into round one, because if
- 26:41Speaker 4: you're doing that, you're probably giving up maybe four to
- 26:45Speaker 4: get to what it's a long way to go to
- 26:47Speaker 4: get from fifty six to thirty two. They probably have
- 26:50Speaker 4: to give up at least two of those third round picks.
- 26:52Speaker 4: That sounds very exciting when you're thinking about Thursday night,
- 26:56Speaker 4: But I'll ask you, do you really want to give
- 27:00Speaker 4: up that much? Is this not a year where you'd
- 27:03Speaker 4: rather have two or three good players rather than a
- 27:05Speaker 4: bottom first round guy. So here's hoping, is what I'm
- 27:11Speaker 4: kind of talking about. I don't know that javers Man
- 27:13Speaker 4: necessarily need the hope to get into the first round
- 27:15Speaker 4: to have a productive draft with here.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Well, you look at last year's you know, a second
- 27:19Speaker 1: and third round picks, and the guy didn't have a
- 27:21Speaker 1: second but the third round picks Cali Brand saw as
- 27:23Speaker 1: a guy that we have high hopes for. You'd like
- 27:25Speaker 1: to have that guy. Wyatt Milam is somebody I think,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and I think I'm not the only person that believes
- 27:32Speaker 1: this is going to be a long term starter for
- 27:33Speaker 1: them when he breaks the line up here and Jayla McLeod,
- 27:37Speaker 1: the kid from Auburn that we didn't get to see
- 27:38Speaker 1: last year. He practiced a bit at the end of
- 27:40Speaker 1: the year and he's incredibly athletic. Right it looks like
- 27:43Speaker 1: he's going to be a very good player. I think
- 27:45Speaker 1: three of those four of those yes are more valuable
- 27:48Speaker 1: to this team where it is right now, which is
- 27:51Speaker 1: fortifying the roster and building the kind of depth because
- 27:55Speaker 1: they have decisions to make on players again. They let
- 27:58Speaker 1: two guys go this year. There may be other guy
- 28:00Speaker 1: they have to let go. You need to have replacement
- 28:02Speaker 1: jars on the shelf that you can open and put
- 28:05Speaker 1: players into the lineup.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Yeah, do you want to use one of those second
- 28:08Speaker 4: or third round picks in theory? I don't know what
- 28:12Speaker 4: they're gonna do with Parker a punt returner, but he's
- 28:15Speaker 4: starting to be a guy that you need in the lineup.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Do you take a flyer on a punt return or
- 28:20Speaker 4: third round guy outside linebacker, third round guy, one more safety,
- 28:26Speaker 4: third round guy, all those historically you can get in
- 28:29Speaker 4: that spot. Haven't even talked about the second round yet,
- 28:32Speaker 4: So I don't know. Knowing James glass Own, if there's
- 28:37Speaker 4: somebody there, he will try to move up, no question,
- 28:40Speaker 4: But I don't know that it's a have to, and
- 28:42Speaker 4: I don't think to have a good draft.
- 28:44Speaker 5: I don't think you have to do it well.
- 28:46Speaker 1: The most glaring need I think we've talked about this
- 28:49Speaker 1: offseason would be maybe a penetrating defensive tackle. But this
- 28:52Speaker 1: doesn't appear to be a great draft fat So why
- 28:54Speaker 1: would you move up when there are other positions with
- 28:58Speaker 1: good players that will benefit you A time, lots to
- 29:01Speaker 1: talk about in the next couple of weeks leading up
- 29:03Speaker 1: to the twenty twenty six NFL Draft, which will be
- 29:05Speaker 1: held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We're back to wrap this show
- 29:08Speaker 1: up in just a moment, and we're back to wrap
- 29:16Speaker 1: things up on Jags am Brian John Kai returns next week.
- 29:21Speaker 1: The draft is a couple of weeks away OTAs well.
- 29:26Speaker 1: You got to get the phase one of the off season,
- 29:28Speaker 1: which starts on April twentieth. Yeah, hard to believe it's
- 29:32Speaker 1: here already. Yeah, just a couple of weeks and we'll
- 29:34Speaker 1: stay on top of all the stories, including the vote
- 29:37Speaker 1: This afternoon from orlandos so tay tuned to all the
- 29:41Speaker 1: pardon from Phoenix potentially about Orlando. Stay tuned all the
- 29:45Speaker 1: Jaguars social channels for an update there on where the
- 29:48Speaker 1: Jaguars will play in twenty twenty seven Weekspect that story
- 29:51Speaker 1: to break this afternoon. Have a great day everybody. Thanks
- 29:53Speaker 1: for joining us on jags Am.
