- 0:00Back here with Coach Orrie. I'm Alive and the Dunk and Music Lounge,
- 0:03iHeartRadio, Heartbord, some of our flagship Hey Ben, why don't you up?
- 0:08Ben's already a head for that microphone because we're gonna get some audience participation
- 0:10here. Shortly. YadA had surgery yesterday to clean up that knee. So
- 0:16that's that's three that we know of that are done for the year. How's
- 0:21a'sy doing two weeks out of surgery? You mentioned last week she was she
- 0:24was doing really well. Yeah, she's doing well. She's doing well.
- 0:27Is she home? Yeah? That makes she's had experience with these That's the
- 0:32problem. You know a lot of these kids, those parents out there that
- 0:36you guys are listening, you know, these kids come to college screwed up.
- 0:40So then you it gets exacerbated because down the levels higher, the competition
- 0:47is obviously much tougher, the intensity levels higher, and so they come from
- 0:52college with all these physical issues that they've accumulated from playing so much basketball and
- 1:00high school and it's just a matter of time. We're not the only team.
- 1:04We're not the only team that's dealing with this stuff. We're just the
- 1:07most high profile team. So you read about us all the time, you
- 1:11know, like Notre Dame's had three ACLS in the last two years, but
- 1:15you don't really hear much about that. You know, there's you know,
- 1:19UCLA's missing kids. North Carolina had three kids missing. Yeah, Utah just
- 1:23lost her number two score. There you go. So by that Pilly kids
- 1:27by the way, he's she's really good. She's really good. So you've
- 1:30got you've got these kids coming out of high school damaged. Uh and Yanna
- 1:38is a perfect example. She's had ten and night a center and Rayney or
- 1:42left me m and her left meee since sophomore year in high school, and
- 1:49it just keeps getting worse and worse and worse. You know, you try
- 1:51everything to fix it, make it better, and nothing works. So they
- 1:55had to go in there and have surgery. You know, Asy had a
- 2:00tent a cl in high school and it's just you know, Pages had a
- 2:04really bad ankle in high school and kept trying to think, I can play
- 2:07through it, I can play through it. I can play through it.
- 2:08Comes to college, next thing you know, she's favoring her the other leg
- 2:13instead of the ankle. But but by now we got to fix the ankle,
- 2:15and then the knee happens. It's just NonStop. It's non stop.
- 2:20Carol had how many searcheres she have in high school? Hip surgery h CL.
- 2:25I mean, so they come, they come to college with a lot
- 2:30of stuff and you just have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that it
- 2:35doesn't catch up to him. How's Caroline doing doing? Okay, she's doing
- 2:39okay. You know, it's just it's just something that you can't It just
- 2:51keeps reoccurring. It keeps reoccurring, It keeps reoccurring. That's quality of life
- 2:53now, right, you know, so you when we were in Europe,
- 3:00when we were in Europe, this is the best she looks since freshman year
- 3:04when we were in Europe, right because now partly because she hadn't done anything
- 3:08since May or no, since we lost in Marchep so April, May,
- 3:15June. She practiced a little bit July we go over in Europe. I
- 3:20mean, this is the best she looks in freshman year. There's no line.
- 3:23Now She's running down the floor and Ice catches the ball at a half
- 3:28court, turns around and is throwing it to that guy over there and hits
- 3:31her right in the head where the pass who can't make that up? So
- 3:38it's just it's just and it's not so much just that, but then you
- 3:45know the you know, her neck muscles, you know, because you're constantly
- 3:50tensed up, you know. So in the long term, in the long
- 3:54term, it's what are we talking about here about basketball? Right now?
- 4:01We're we're talking about what's it going to be like ten years from now or
- 4:05whenever. So I think you have to be real careful with this stuff.
- 4:11And it's not worth winning a couple more games if you're gonna put a kid's
- 4:16future in jeopardy, I'd rather not do that. Anybody got a question for
- 4:24coach Ben's got a microphone here, Feel free to put your hand up.
- 4:27Oh, you know the other first, you know the other worst call in
- 4:30the history of basketball. Wearing a big guy or anybody puts their hands up
- 4:33and guy turns around and shoots it, and the ref calls a whistle and
- 4:40goes like, you went like that, And I'm thinking, I don't think
- 4:45they did. But if you're like this and the offensive player gets the ball
- 4:53and goes up into your arms, it's your foul. So they go you
- 4:57have to get your hands up. Okay, my hands are up. No,
- 5:02they have to be like up where see. I see you have to
- 5:08get your aren't behind your ears. So this is the only way that you
- 5:14could do it. Yeah, that's the head getting the offensive player creates the
- 5:18contents on the defense. That's a real good position to be and that's a
- 5:21real athletic position right there right Mine neck hurts right now. So that's the
- 5:28other call that drives me crazy. That was off air question, by the
- 5:31way. All right, I would like to know when you're how much direct
- 5:38control do you have over your non conference schedule? And then I'd like to
- 5:44have you walk us through an instance where you know, we all hear that
- 5:49you like to set up a game so that by the time the girls graduate,
- 5:54they each play so that their family and friends could all be there like
- 5:58Wednesday. Yeah. Well, I have complete control over it. So if
- 6:05I don't want to play somebody, we don't play them. And if I
- 6:09want to play somebody, we play them, provided they agree. So you
- 6:13can either make a non conference schedule that has no good games on it.
- 6:17You can make one that has just a few maybe depending on what kind of
- 6:23team you're going to have the following year. Maybe you adjust your schedule for
- 6:27us, and where our program has been all these years, we can't play
- 6:31that kind of schedule where we just play ten teams that we're going to beat
- 6:36by one hundred and fifty like some schools in America do. We have to
- 6:43play really good teams because that's what our fans expect. You can't charge people
- 6:47what we charge for them to come to the games and then play lousy teams
- 6:50over and over and over again. So you think you're going to have a
- 6:55really good team, which obviously we think we're going to have a really good
- 6:58team every year. So you try to schedule as many good games as you
- 7:01can. And you know, we play in two venues. Unfortunately, I'm
- 7:08not a big fan of that. That we play you know, both in
- 7:11Hartford and in Gamble, so you got to split them up. So you
- 7:15have to have some big, big games in Hartford and some big big games
- 7:18at Gamble. Because some people buy season tickets to both, some just one
- 7:23or the other. So you got all those factors in the consideration. Then
- 7:27you get a TV event. People say hey, we want you to play
- 7:30so and so on national television on this date so you try to put that
- 7:35together because it's good. So we have complete control over our non conference schedule.
- 7:42Putting a game together in someone's hometown can be easy or it can be
- 7:47impossible. So you know, it's it's happened so many times where we had
- 7:59and they're not there anymore. So we had when we recruited Tamika Williams,
- 8:01right, and she's from Dayton, Ohio. So we said, yeah,
- 8:07we'll try to set a game up. We call Ohio State and say,
- 8:09hey, you guys want to play and obviously this is years ago, nobody's
- 8:11there now that was there then, No, if Tamika wanted to play at
- 8:16Ohio State, she should have come here. Well, you're an idiot.
- 8:24You're an idiot because the next kid you want to recruit from there that goes
- 8:28away, they're going to remember you said that. And secondly, if we
- 8:35come there, you're going to sell out the building and win or lose.
- 8:39You that's a w for you. Okay. So then you get like Minnesota
- 8:48where Lindsay Lindsay Whalen was coaching and she said, absolutely, coach, you
- 8:58will do it. Well, then she steps down and a new coach comes
- 9:01in and now you're at their mercy, like if they say no. Now,
- 9:07that's why it's important to get to get a contract signed. The contract
- 9:11signed, the coach is stuck. So fortunately the coach of Minnesota was like,
- 9:16yeah, that's fine, we'll do it. And they had like eleven
- 9:20thousand people at the game, and hell, they played great. They played
- 9:22great, and they haven't lost since then. They've got one loss for the
- 9:26season, I believe. And this is our first year there. So sometimes
- 9:31it's real easy. Sometimes it's real hard. The one in Minnesota, I
- 9:35mean the one in Toronto next Wednesday that was supposed to be us in Pitt
- 9:41Pitt coach was fired. We hadn't signed the contract yet. The new coach
- 9:46goes, how, we're not playing you guys, just like that. So
- 9:52you'd rather lose to somebody else than lose to us. If you're gonna lose,
- 10:00don't you want to lose to us? The University of Hartford used to
- 10:05be like that, you don't want to play us. Now we're gonna play
- 10:07Boston College. They're gonna beat your ass. So you rather say we lost
- 10:11to Boston College, Well, you guys must really stink. Hey we lost
- 10:16the uccount Well, everybody does. You guys must not be that bad,
- 10:20so you be surprised how teams, how teams think. All right, we'll
- 10:24get another question for the audience whill we come back. It's the Wells Fargo.
- 10:26You kind of women's basketball coaches show on their fields.
