- 0:00There's a confidence in a swagger.
- 0:01That may have been the fact that I, I, I cleaned up and got sober
- 0:04three years ago. That's certainly changed a lot
- 0:07in my demeanour and my outlook on life.
- 0:09In my world. People say it all the time, but
- 0:11for me it was true. It had a huge effect and I, I
- 0:15renewed vigour. So I went into this album with
- 0:17my eyes really wide open and very more excited than probably
- 0:22than I use the animal, but anything else.
- 0:24And it was a joy to make. It was a joy to write.
- 0:26It was a joy to get rid of a lot of demons.
- 0:28I felt I'd exercised a few demons in the lyrics, but I
- 0:31think I did it in a positive way.
- 0:39What's up everybodyitskeithy@ghostcoltman.com
- 0:42I'm super stoked to welcome in once again the great Ricky
- 0:45Warwick. How are you doing, Sir?
- 0:46I'm very well. Thank you.
- 0:47Good to see you. Yeah, great to see you first and
- 0:50foremost, you know, I know you just said off offline, you're in
- 0:53Ireland right now. I hope your your home, your
- 0:57family, your friends, your collaborators are OK.
- 0:59We just went through like the worst of the worst with the
- 1:01fires. I'm in Northern California, so
- 1:04no stranger to fire fear and stuff.
- 1:06And I just hope everybody in your circle.
- 1:09Thank you. We were good.
- 1:10It came pretty close to the place in LA where we're in
- 1:13Beverly Hills and, and we're sort of right next door to
- 1:15Pacific Palisades, which just got completely decimated.
- 1:18And, you know, my daughter had friends that went to to Pali
- 1:21High School there and the whole school's gone.
- 1:23And it was awful. I was over here and I got back,
- 1:26I was in our and I got back to LA about two days after the
- 1:29fires had started. So it was still ongoing.
- 1:32And yeah, crazy times. So crazy, crazy times we're
- 1:36living in. Absolutely.
- 1:37Last time we chatted, I was living in Brooklyn, and the time
- 1:40before that was Boston. So now it's like all over the
- 1:43world. Ricky and Keith, Hey.
- 1:45Moving around, that's good. I am move around a bit and but
- 1:49since I came to California, you're always worried about the
- 1:51big one, right? The earthquakes and not the
- 1:53fires. But I was taught the fires are
- 1:55actually an every year thing for Northern Southern California.
- 1:59Yeah, You know, just obviously not to the extent we had in Los
- 2:02Angeles this year. That was that was definitely a
- 2:04doozy. You know, it's crazy.
- 2:05Yeah, just and then everything else.
- 2:07The world at large is crazy. So, you know, I just hope your
- 2:11your your whole. Thank you.
- 2:12I appreciate that. We're all we're all doing.
- 2:14We're all doing the best we can. Thank you very much.
- 2:16Yeah, and as always, music is the relief.
- 2:18Music is the bomb when we're when we're burned and we're in
- 2:21pain. So I love blood ties.
- 2:23This is fantastic coming out as we record this almost on the eve
- 2:27of the album drop from Earache Records, which is fascinating in
- 2:31and of itself, and that Earache is still going strong after like
- 2:3535 years. Yeah, there's a label I used to
- 2:37get tapes from in the 80s and 90s from Terrorizer magazine and
- 2:42Kerrang as an import in America. Course.
- 2:46And now they're still here. So blood ties, man.
- 2:48You know, we were talking, you know, over the years, in the
- 2:51time I've reflected back on, you know, I listen when I get to do
- 2:55an interview with someone, I deep dive.
- 2:57I listen to everything I can get my hand, my grubby little hands
- 3:00and ears on. And I know in the previous solo
- 3:04work, as you were trying to, you know, fend your way through, you
- 3:07know, what it looks like to be back as a solo artist that you
- 3:10were getting, you know, even more personal than ever before
- 3:15with your work. And I feel like Blood Ties is
- 3:17kind of a very uplifting, again, needed right now, a very
- 3:21uplifting, overwhelmingly positive good record.
- 3:25Is that an indication that you know, it's good to be Ricky
- 3:27right now? Yeah, I'm thank you.
- 3:30I think it's good to be comfortable in your own skin.
- 3:33And I think I am finally starting to feel very, very at
- 3:36home with who I am or whoever the hell Ricky Warwick is.
- 3:40And I think that came through on the record.
- 3:42I am there's there's a confidence swagger that may have
- 3:46been the fact that I I cleaned up and got sober three years
- 3:49ago. That's certainly changed a lot
- 3:51in my demeanor and my outlook on life in my world.
- 3:54People say it all the time, but for me, it was true.
- 3:56It had a huge effect on a renewed vigor.
- 3:59So I went into this album with my eyes really wide open and
- 4:04very more excited than probably than I use the Alma.
- 4:06But anything else. And it was a joy to make.
- 4:10It was a joy to write. It was a joy to get rid of a lot
- 4:12of demons. I felt I'd exercised a few
- 4:14demons in the lyrics. But I think I did it in a
- 4:16positive way. You know, I've never been a fan
- 4:19of, you know, the it's, it's all doom and gloom.
- 4:21The world's going and that's it. I'm always like, yeah, it's doom
- 4:24and gloom. But there's still a lot of good
- 4:26stuff going on out there. There's still a lot of good
- 4:28people. There's still a lot of good
- 4:29things happening. May have to look a little harder
- 4:31for it, but it's there. I like that.
- 4:32I also in the same way and I was there any trepidation, you know,
- 4:38also I'm not drinking as much as I used to.
- 4:40I'm not quite sober or not, but I can't drink anymore as much as
- 4:44I used to or enjoy because of medical stuff.
- 4:46So I, I know I'm like, oh, am I? Are people going to like me even
- 4:50when I don't have a drink in my hand?
- 4:51And you know, well, you know the hardest thing of my personality.
- 4:54But not not drinking is other people.
- 4:56People say what's the fuckest thing?
- 4:57And the hardest thing is that the people that can't wrap your
- 5:01head around the fact that you're not drinking, therefore you must
- 5:03be having a shit time. That's that.
- 5:05And then, you know, I'll get people to go on about it and I'm
- 5:08like, I'm doing great. I'm having a great time.
- 5:10You're ruining it for me because you shouldn't be having an issue
- 5:13with, with what's going on in my life.
- 5:15And I, and that's, that's the hardest part about it is, is
- 5:18that peer pressure from other people.
- 5:19Once you kind of move past that, you know, for me, it's, I don't
- 5:24even think about it anymore. I'll still go about to the, to
- 5:27the pub with my mates. I'll leave earlier.
- 5:29I'll get to that point where don't they're on their 5th or
- 5:316th pint or the whiskey comes out and and they're on that
- 5:34level. It's just selling this when you
- 5:36can't get on that plane, that's fine.
- 5:37I'll just go guys, it's great. It's 11:00.
- 5:40I'm going home. I'm going to get up tomorrow at
- 5:427:00. My head will be clear.
- 5:44You're going to wake up tomorrow.
- 5:45The choices, hangover, you're into that more part to you, but
- 5:48that's just not my kick right now.
- 5:50Right on. Good for you.
- 5:51And you know it does work if you work it as they say.
- 5:55And you know what I thought about even not related to this,
- 5:59but I, I watched recently the Shane McGowan documentary and
- 6:03how could you not be a fan? We talked before about him being
- 6:06an influence, his influence over everybody.
- 6:08And you know, I just felt so bad for him.
- 6:10He was suffering so much at the end of his life.
- 6:13And I just was like, Oh my God, like I'm so glad I I didn't do
- 6:17even more damage to myself than I did because here's a
- 6:21beautiful, wonderful, genius person that robbed himself from
- 6:25the world. And like, he had like a lifetime
- 6:27of problems, right? And demons to work out himself.
- 6:30But just like, I just felt so I don't think I ever felt so bad
- 6:34for an artist in my whole life. Like I just felt so bad for him.
- 6:37He struggled so badly at the end.
- 6:39Yeah, it's a shame, you know, And for some people, they just,
- 6:42it's an affliction that they can't overcome.
- 6:44Some, some people, some artists don't want to overcome it.
- 6:47That's who they are and what they are and they'll go out that
- 6:50way. You know, Shane was, it was a
- 6:52great writer and a great poet and, and left his mark and was
- 6:55certainly uncompromising right till the very end.
- 6:58Indeed, there's a there's a healthy kind of stubbornness
- 7:01that you need to have. I think as an artist, you, you
- 7:03can appreciate that to, you know, again, to follow your own
- 7:06path. And, and I also always think
- 7:07about like the very first time I heard his voice and I was like,
- 7:10Oh my God, this is the voice of a million sorrows.
- 7:14But also like, why does it make me feel better?
- 7:16I did sad music make me feel better?
- 7:18It just does, right. I don't know.
- 7:20I, I, you know, you talked about like kind of feeling comfortable
- 7:23with yourself. I often feel like men,
- 7:25especially, you know, our generation of men, I think we're
- 7:28just a little more smooth brained longer.
- 7:31Like the folds. The folds don't fully come in
- 7:34the brain flesh until much later in life.
- 7:37Or whether it's wisdom or whatever it is.
- 7:39We have to go through our journeys, right?
- 7:41But I just feel like I meet very mature women at at a younger age
- 7:45and they're like, they got it figured out.
- 7:46And I'm just like, what am I doing?
- 7:48I'm a 52 year old man child. Why don't I have this better
- 7:51figured out? I didn't plan for it.
- 7:52That's what it was. I thought we were going to go
- 7:54out in the hail of fallout and I didn't think we were going to be
- 7:58here. But yeah, man, blood ties.
- 8:01This is so strong and so wonderful to hear these up tempo
- 8:04uplifting songs. And I know you know, for, you
- 8:07know, obviously it all begins and ends with you.
- 8:09But I, I wanted to talk about Keith Nelsons of, you know, a
- 8:12friend and a collaborator and almost randomly for a person
- 8:16that has sold millions of records, very underrated as a Co
- 8:18writer and a producer. So I wanted to ask you about
- 8:21your relationship and your working relationship.
- 8:23I agreed it's extremely talented guy that goes under the radar
- 8:27more than it more than he should, but I think he kind of
- 8:29likes it that way now. He go yeah, Keith now, I mean
- 8:34he's so underrated, but I think he kind of likes it that way
- 8:36now. I mean, he, he stepped back from
- 8:38Buckcherry for a reason that he didn't want to go on the road
- 8:41anymore and he wanted to concentrate on on songwriting
- 8:44and being an engineer. And he's got his own, excuse me,
- 8:47he's got his own studio now, which is fantastic.
- 8:49He's become a hell of an engineer and he already was a
- 8:52hell of a guitar player and a hell of a songwriter.
- 8:54So that's just another string to his bow now that he's so good at
- 8:57engineering and we've built up a relationship from the last
- 9:00record. I really only met Keith
- 9:02literally right before we started making the last record.
- 9:04Now I feel like I know the guy. You know, we're 5-6 years down
- 9:07the road. So again, there's a bond as
- 9:09confidence builds up there. You get comfortable being in
- 9:12somebody's company. You're not afraid to sort of say
- 9:15stuff. I can't say enough good things
- 9:17about Keith. I bring him an idea and he gets
- 9:20it. He has a vision and he makes it
- 9:22about me. He doesn't try and I'm Keith
- 9:24Nelson from Buckcherry and needs to sound like this.
- 9:26It's like I want to make a Ricky Warwick record and that's a
- 9:29great thing and it makes my life really easy and he brings so
- 9:32much to the to the table. He's fantastic and.
- 9:35Yeah, like, of course you know what you want out of every
- 9:39record and you help write the song, so you want to.
- 9:42Well, I. Think I know it doesn't always
- 9:43turn out that way. Right, of course, but you know,
- 9:46and also like you've always been, you know, has had a great
- 9:48spirit of collaboration, whatever project it was or your
- 9:51solo work. And Speaking of collaborators, I
- 9:53love these guests appearances on the record, especially Lita, who
- 9:57I got to meet once and was fantastic.
- 9:59It's such a great compliment to your voice.
- 10:01Her voice comes in and it's unbelievable.
- 10:04Great job. Yeah, thank you very much.
- 10:06No, I'm, I'm honored to have her be such a part of it, not just
- 10:10sitting on the track, but agree to be in the video and do such a
- 10:12great job in the video as well. And the whole thing.
- 10:14She's she as you know, she's wonderful.
- 10:16She really is. Yeah, it's I'm so happy there
- 10:18are still videos being made as sometimes it feels like maybe,
- 10:22maybe the time is gone. You know, you don't really get
- 10:25the same kind of budget now you're you kind of get to do
- 10:27them on a shoestring and and that's OK.
- 10:29You can do some great stuff if you've got a good version on it,
- 10:32a creative director, you can do them pretty cheaply.
- 10:33You certainly don't need to spend the obscene amounts of
- 10:36money that were spent on them in the 90s.
- 10:37But we had a clear vision. We shot the video and Lisa lives
- 10:40in Phoenix. We shot the video in Phoenix on
- 10:42her doorstep and an old boxing ring and she was just great.
- 10:45It was just such a great day hanging out with her.
- 10:47We had such a laugh. Yeah, it's it's a, it's a fun
- 10:49clip. I'm gonna link it in the
- 10:50description to everybody can see it.
- 10:52But the other collabs also the other guest appearances are
- 10:55great. And I wanted to ask, is that
- 10:57something where you wrote for them or wrote the whole album
- 11:00and then decided like this song needs somebody else on?
- 11:02It Oh, no, absolutely. You know, the album is written,
- 11:05you know, narcissistically for me, you know, and then it's a
- 11:08question of, wouldn't it be cool?
- 11:10You know, who, you know, who, who, who are the great people
- 11:14that we, that, who are friends that are also amazing artists.
- 11:17Can we get into to, to add some sparkle on some of these songs?
- 11:20And, and, and Billy Duffy's a great friend of myself and
- 11:23Keith's, you know, we hang out together.
- 11:25We're tight. And you know, I've all tried to
- 11:28get Billy in before. It's just he's been on tour.
- 11:30I've been on tour. It just hasn't worked out.
- 11:32But this time everything aligned perfectly and and Billy was able
- 11:35to come down for the day and make his mark on a couple of
- 11:38songs, which was tremendous. And this Charlie star is all
- 11:41Keith. I'm a big fan of Charlie and
- 11:43BlackBerry Smoke, but I didn't know the dude.
- 11:44I've never met him. Keith is great friends with him.
- 11:47And Keith suggested Charlie on the track Rising Grind and sent
- 11:50it. I've not got to know Charlie
- 11:52through texting. I still not meant the dude, but
- 11:54Charlie just did an amazing job. Absolutely honored to have him
- 11:57on there. You know, so it was really,
- 12:00really cool. Tuck Smith, a big fan of the
- 12:02fighters. Tuck's a buddy again, talking
- 12:04about somebody's underrated. He's such an underrated, you
- 12:07know, artist as well. So lovely to have tuck on there.
- 12:10And then Ben Crystal from the Sisters of Mercy.
- 12:12Ben plays in my solar band. So that was a no brainer just to
- 12:15have Ben on there as well. So very blessed to have these
- 12:17people give up their time and, and, and give me their, you
- 12:22know, the great artistry on the songs.
- 12:24Yeah, Billy's another one like you.
- 12:26I don't know if you feel like they're working even more than
- 12:28now than ever. And Keith could fall into that
- 12:30too. And we are big supporters of
- 12:32Tuck and everything, you know, big biters fan as well.
- 12:38But yeah, it's fun. And I think they help, you know,
- 12:40they don't take away. That's the most important thing
- 12:42Whenever you have a guest come on.
- 12:44You know, the add to it and I think that's the beauty of doing
- 12:47the solo record as well. Obviously you're not putting any
- 12:50of the the guys in the band noses out of joint by having a
- 12:53guitar player coming in and stealing your guitar players,
- 12:55you know, spotting the limelight or a vocalist or something.
- 12:58With the solo record, you can just do what the hell you want.
- 13:01You can have who you want on it and, and nobody, nobody's going
- 13:04to say Boo, you know, it's great.
- 13:05So that that was nice. That was nice to be able to do
- 13:07that. Right at the end of the day, it
- 13:09has your name on it and #1. That's it, you know.
- 13:13What's it like? You know, like I said, I alluded
- 13:15to earlier in the chat about Earache, I think you know, it's
- 13:19a, it's an inspired choice. You know, similar to the job
- 13:22market, you don't better your circumstances until you have a
- 13:26period of time somewhere, get some credentials and move on to
- 13:29another place. So, you know, you know, stranger
- 13:31to changing labels and things like that.
- 13:33And you've been with Eric for a second.
- 13:35But you know, it's it's fascinating how some of the
- 13:38older and oldest labels are still alive.
- 13:41And Eric is really now like in terms of the new music that they
- 13:44put out beside their back catalog of all this extreme
- 13:47metal, they do have these amazing rock bands.
- 13:50This is like the thing they're doing now is like these great
- 13:52modern common rock bands. Yeah, they're great.
- 13:55They're great. They're, as you said, you know,
- 13:57you said the best an old school label have been going for over
- 13:5930 years. And Digby Pierce that runs a
- 14:01label, where's his heart and his sleeve and it's very
- 14:03enthusiastic and, and, and really believes in the acts that
- 14:06he works with. And that's great to see.
- 14:08And it feels like an old school label.
- 14:10You know, don't get me wrong, the money's not what it used to
- 14:14be, but Digby's astute enough to realize that, you know, if he
- 14:18wants a great record, you have to pay for the studio time and
- 14:21that kind of thing. And that's lovely.
- 14:22But still have that. They did a great.
- 14:24We did the last Black Star writers record with him.
- 14:25He did a fantastic job of that record.
- 14:27They got it, you know, a top 10 record in the UK and and that
- 14:30was right, you know, during the tail end of the pandemic.
- 14:33So there was no real touring to promote it and all.
- 14:35They did a wonderful job. And for me, when I I heard they
- 14:39were interested in possibly, you know, picking up the the solo
- 14:42record, there was a no brainer. I was like, absolutely.
- 14:44And the promotion and the work they've done thus far has been
- 14:47just fantastic. And it's one of those things
- 14:49later in your career, you need to have those.
- 14:52You know, there aren't as many comforts as you said, or, or the
- 14:55money, but it's important to have those relationships and,
- 14:58and still building trust. Trust is a lot.
- 15:01And especially in this day and age, like you again, you came
- 15:03from the era where vinyl was originally the only medium and
- 15:07then the CD and now vinyl is back, which I'm thrilled.
- 15:11I'm I'm excited. You know, Eric does a marvelous
- 15:14job on their vinyl, by the way, I don't know where it goes.
- 15:17It's. It's phenomenal what they do
- 15:18really is. In addition.
- 15:20Things appeal to me about them as well.
- 15:22You know, yeah, of course the packaging is going to be top
- 15:24notch. In addition to doing these
- 15:26interviews and everything else we do with news with Coast Cult,
- 15:28I have a vinyl podcast and we talk about so how you know what,
- 15:31what brands are doing great work and yeah, void and yeah, Eric,
- 15:37if you get in on any of those re issues for anybody out there
- 15:40that's a long time metal fan and and their new stuff is pressed
- 15:44beautifully, packaged beautifully with care.
- 15:46Like they know vinyl nerds love this label and love these bands
- 15:50and they take care of you. So I will always stand a good
- 15:53label that takes care of their listeners.
- 15:56Yeah, absolutely. They're great, they really are.
- 15:58Absolutely. So you've been beside this
- 16:00record coming out. You've been extremely busy.
- 16:02As you know, before, last time we talked you were like, maybe
- 16:05the Almighty is going to come back now you've done a whole
- 16:07comeback tour and all this other stuff.
- 16:09Besides obviously supporting this new record, is there
- 16:12anything else on the docket for you this year or potentially for
- 16:16the future? You know, the Almighty, we just
- 16:18got back from Japan about 3 weeks ago.
- 16:20We were in the studio last week doing something that's pretty
- 16:22special. It's not a new record, but we've
- 16:24been recording, so that's going to see the light of day quite
- 16:27soon and I'm excited about that really.
- 16:29I'm, you know, about to hit the road with this record on for
- 16:33shows this Saturday and we're out for pretty much all the
- 16:35March in the UK. So, you know, I want to push and
- 16:38promote this record as much as I can this year.
- 16:40And Blacks are Riders isn't finished.
- 16:42We're on a hiatus, but we will be coming back around again at
- 16:45some point. Just keeping busy.
- 16:46You know, the priority for me right now is this record and,
- 16:49and the solo stuff. That's the that's sort of taking
- 16:52over everything. And that's what I really want to
- 16:54focus on. I want to push and we will do
- 16:56some more almighty shows at the end of the year.
- 16:58And yeah, you know it. Just just I'm, I'm keeping busy,
- 17:02staying out of trouble. Nice, that's the best way.
- 17:05I I will say I'm going to have one request.
- 17:06Please make more Christmas music.
- 17:08I am by no means religious, but I love holiday music and I love
- 17:12that Christmas song so much. Man, thank.
- 17:14You that really gave me a lift at the end of the year during
- 17:17the bad. Well, you know, thank you.
- 17:18And that's what it was supposed to do.
- 17:19There was no agenda behind that. There was no, you know, I knew
- 17:23it was I knew it was writing a cheesy Chris.
- 17:24I wanted to write a cheesy good time Christmas song.
- 17:27I just wanted to write a song that just made people feel good
- 17:30because I I loved Christmas when I I was a kid.
- 17:32We'd have a lot of money, but the family coming together, that
- 17:35feeling that you got was magical.
- 17:38And and then when my own kids now you're all grown up.
- 17:40I went through all that with them and I've written the the
- 17:43the pessimistic dark Christmas song with the almighty detract
- 17:46bandage knees. And I just thought, you know, I
- 17:48want and and I love, you know, Roy Wood wizard.
- 17:51I wish it could be Christmas every day, you know, Fairy tale
- 17:54in New York, The Pogues, obviously, you know, Slade,
- 17:57Merry Christmas. And those were songs on my
- 17:58youth, and they would just feel good.
- 18:00Rock Christmas anthems. And I thought, you know what,
- 18:03I'm just going to write a Christmas song.
- 18:04I don't care. And if it makes somebody smile,
- 18:07there you go. It makes me smile.
- 18:08Job done. Make more in the future please.
- 18:11The only the only artist who can make a sad Christmas song sound
- 18:14happy was The Ramones, and I'm not against that either, but I'm
- 18:17really. Another great Christmas song.
- 18:19Yeah, Merry Christmas, baby. I don't want to fight.
- 18:21And they had a couple, actually. But yeah, I'd love to get a
- 18:23whole or an EP from you on that because I think it was
- 18:26beautifully done. Thank you.
- 18:27Thank you very much. Yeah, Ricky, always a pleasure
- 18:30to see you, man. I hope you back.
- 18:32We'll get you back when you're done with your home out there in
- 18:34the States at some point and see you on tour and you know again,
- 18:38we'll we'll have a coffee together and I love to see you
- 18:42again in person like a while back.
- 18:44Just keep keep up the good work and and keep taking care of
- 18:47yourself. Thank you.
- 18:47So. Much you too man, appreciate all
- 18:49the support means a lot. Thank you very much.
