Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, Mets, you got
- 0:17Speaker 1: me doing it, you got me playing it here at
- 0:19Speaker 1: one leg up Network, at the Alex Garrett one Layer
- 0:22Speaker 1: Up Network. O MG is the name of the game
- 0:26Speaker 1: right now for this team. And let me tell you
- 0:30Speaker 1: the OMG moments continue. And this was even before before
- 0:37Speaker 1: Grimace and Hawk to a Girl showed up. Okay, this
- 0:40Speaker 1: is a locked closed door players only meeting after they
- 0:45Speaker 1: were what twenty two and thirty three, which Monday's hero
- 0:50Speaker 1: franciscoing Door actually called for. And then he hits the
- 0:55Speaker 1: two run homer and then sure enough last night, your
- 1:00Speaker 1: friend and a fellow Queen's College alum, had arguably one
- 1:06Speaker 1: of the best calls I think in Met's history. William Sis.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Here's the pitch.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Swinging a fly ball to right field pretty well, hit
- 1:17Speaker 2: freelick back at the wall. He jumps heads, gone hate dead.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo, with the most favorable home run of his career,
- 1:26Speaker 2: pumps his fist as he round second hits a three
- 1:29Speaker 2: run homer. He's given the Mets of three to two lead.
- 1:32Speaker 2: They all pour out of the dugout Alonzo on his
- 1:35Speaker 2: way to home plate. They're waiting for him. He hits
- 1:38Speaker 2: the plate, he is first congratulated by Neimo hugged landor
- 1:43Speaker 2: there are a dozen Mets waiting for him outside the dugout.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo keeps this fairy tale season going with the
- 1:50Speaker 2: fairy tale swing of his career.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Free. Wow, wow, Wow. That was how he rose on
- 1:59Speaker 1: the Mets Radio eight eighty. And let me tell you something,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I am so happy for how he rose, That he's
- 2:08Speaker 1: having this moment. You know why. It's his fiftieth year
- 2:11Speaker 1: in radio, three decades with the Mets, but fifty years
- 2:15Speaker 1: overall in radio. And that Queen's boy that graduated from
- 2:20Speaker 1: Queen's College that really wasn't an architect of WQMC radio
- 2:25Speaker 1: is going to host a postseason game on Tuesday night
- 2:32Speaker 1: at City Field, is going to call a game in
- 2:35Speaker 1: Queens in October. And I know New Yorkers of both stripes,
- 2:39Speaker 1: the pin stripes and the Orange and Blue stripes, would
- 2:42Speaker 1: love to see these two teams make deep runs when
- 2:45Speaker 1: we It'd be great for the city, it'd be great
- 2:48Speaker 1: for the economy. But for how he rose to have
- 2:50Speaker 1: this moment is awesome, not only because he's an awesome person,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but because in his fifty years of radio, he gets
- 2:58Speaker 1: to call in his fiftieth anniverse a home Mets playoff
- 3:03Speaker 1: game at City Field and an improbable season which might
- 3:09Speaker 1: have more turns that we realize. Right now, This guy,
- 3:14Speaker 1: Pete Alonso had the biggest walk year hit I've seen. Now,
- 3:19Speaker 1: one's a great walk season, but Pete Alonso had the
- 3:23Speaker 1: best walk yer hit I've ever seen. That three run
- 3:27Speaker 1: home run, the most clutch walk year home run. And
- 3:32Speaker 1: you can say, well, judge's walk here, he's sixty two. Well,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you know, we kind of knew it was coming back.
- 3:39Speaker 1: He was pretty much solidified here in New York. But
- 3:42Speaker 1: Pete Alonso had a lot of skeptics going into that
- 3:47Speaker 1: bat alone, going into that game alone, because of the
- 3:51Speaker 1: one for seven heading into it. But sure enough, the
- 3:55Speaker 1: swing of the bat to deep right field the opposite field,
- 3:59Speaker 1: much like it is two hundred homer earlier in the
- 4:01Speaker 1: season in April, keeps this Mets story alive. It's quite impressive.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And if you're not excited, then do you have a pulse?
- 4:13Speaker 1: If you're not excited about the possibility that these two
- 4:16Speaker 1: teams could have a deep run in October Yankees and Mets,
- 4:21Speaker 1: are you that doesn't excite you. We should want these
- 4:26Speaker 1: runs to happen, We should want to be keep going.
- 4:29Speaker 1: This is exciting. This is the most spirit we've had
- 4:32Speaker 1: in a while in New York. It does bring me
- 4:36Speaker 1: back to twenty five years ago and twenty four years ago,
- 4:39Speaker 1: in ninety nine and two thousand. It does, It really does.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And it brings me back a bit because I got
- 4:49Speaker 1: to know Howie at Queen's College and before that, even
- 4:52Speaker 1: before that, and so to see him have his moment
- 4:56Speaker 1: along with Alonso and seeing that excitement on the plane,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and you know, he's been dealing with some health conditions
- 5:02Speaker 1: and thank god he sounds as healthy as ever and
- 5:06Speaker 1: he traveled with the team in Milwaukee to make that
- 5:08Speaker 1: call happen. Oh, that's encouraging, that's exciting. That is New
- 5:14Speaker 1: York City. He is a voice of New York City
- 5:16Speaker 1: sports is how he rose. And I'm just so happy
- 5:20Speaker 1: he's had this moment, and I'm so excited for him
- 5:23Speaker 1: to be able to call a home postseason game, a
- 5:27Speaker 1: home postseason game in Queens, which if you talked about
- 5:31Speaker 1: this in May and April, you wouldn't think this was
- 5:34Speaker 1: a possibility. But here we go, New York City, Here
- 5:38Speaker 1: we go. Both teams get to host postseason games in
- 5:45Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, and that's exciting. I don't want to
- 5:49Speaker 1: say exciting enough, but it is exciting enough at the moment.
- 5:53Speaker 1: But now the hunger's got to be there to see more.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I want to say, in the fifteen years of
- 6:00Speaker 1: this show, how He Rose has been a mentor. I
- 6:03Speaker 1: remember in twenty seventeen he stopped by when I was
- 6:07Speaker 1: in the press box and shot the breeze with me
- 6:10Speaker 1: for a few minutes and caught up. And then it
- 6:13Speaker 1: takes me even further back because during this fifteen year
- 6:16Speaker 1: run of you Know One Like Up Alex and then
- 6:21Speaker 1: it was the Sports Hour, I got to welcome Howi
- 6:24Speaker 1: Rose onto my podcast now onto my radio show at
- 6:28Speaker 1: WQMCY Radio, not once but twice, and that was pretty special.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I know I played you some of that earlier,
- 6:37Speaker 1: but in case you misaid, here's what Howie Rose told
- 6:40Speaker 1: me before the b Sporty event, which we did back
- 6:46Speaker 1: in twenty ten, my freshman year. I want to say,
- 6:51Speaker 1: fifteen years ago on WQMC radio, come to Queens College.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Since you graduated, obviously, what's it like every time you
- 6:58Speaker 1: come back here?
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's great.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I get such tremendous flashbacks. In fact, I was just
- 7:04Speaker 3: telling David Demonto, whom I met at Kylie Hall, that
- 7:08Speaker 3: you know here it is thirty three years I guess
- 7:12Speaker 3: since I graduated or something like that, right, yeah, thirty
- 7:15Speaker 3: three years since I graduated. And Kylie Hall used to
- 7:19Speaker 3: be called back in the olden days when I was
- 7:22Speaker 3: here Academic two. I don't know why there was no
- 7:25Speaker 3: Academic one, but that building was called Academic two. And
- 7:28Speaker 3: it has a scent. I wouldn't call it a stench.
- 7:31Speaker 3: It's not a smell. It's not an aroma. It's a
- 7:34Speaker 3: it's not anything negative, but it's amazing. I walked into
- 7:39Speaker 3: that place today and it literally transported my senses back
- 7:43Speaker 3: to nineteen seventy three.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Was wild.
- 7:46Speaker 3: So I always think when I'm back on campus of
- 7:49Speaker 3: people I knew then, what I was doing then, what
- 7:52Speaker 3: I aspired to do then, and what I'm doing now,
- 7:54Speaker 3: and is a very humbling experience because I think what
- 7:57Speaker 3: I'm doing now even exceeds to something than my wildest
- 8:00Speaker 3: dreams back then. But I think back to how wide
- 8:04Speaker 3: eyed and how ambitious we all were back then, just
- 8:08Speaker 3: as you are now, and you know, one of the
- 8:10Speaker 3: reasons I'm here today is I convince you and anybody else,
- 8:13Speaker 3: regardless of what their passion is or what their interests
- 8:18Speaker 3: long term are, that just put in the work and
- 8:21Speaker 3: don't ever let anybody tell you that you can't do it,
- 8:23Speaker 3: and you'll get there, you'll make it.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And yeah, we could have shot the breeze about the
- 8:27Speaker 1: Mets at that time, and then I did ask him
- 8:29Speaker 1: about Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins at one point, But
- 8:33Speaker 1: for him imparting what he wanted to impart to the
- 8:37Speaker 1: students so much more to him than talking Mets baseball
- 8:40Speaker 1: in that moment, and I appreciate that about how he rose.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So congratulations Petere Alonso, Congratulations on fifty years in radio,
- 8:50Speaker 1: how he rose, getting the recognition you deserve. Making another
- 8:54Speaker 1: stellar call. This does rank up there with Metto Mette Metto.
- 8:58Speaker 1: You remember that call.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Right in the far corner, that's host swoops in the
- 9:02Speaker 2: winter ship. That's hoe behind the that switching the Racers
- 9:11Speaker 2: have one more hell the time, baby Man Cooper the Racers.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And thirty years later, Ranger fans still love that call.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But for a lot of people, this one, thirty years
- 9:26Speaker 1: later hits home. Because baseball's romantic like that.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Peto Alonzo keeps this fairy tale season going with the
- 9:41Speaker 2: fairy tale swing of his career.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Baseball is unpredictable like that, And because I think it
- 9:50Speaker 1: endears the whole city with that call. But this one
- 9:57Speaker 1: endears the whole city. It's a unifier, it's a rallying
- 10:02Speaker 1: what the Mets are doing right now, and we need
- 10:06Speaker 1: that unity. We need that rallying from both teams heading
- 10:10Speaker 1: into the NLDS and ALDS. Look, everybody's saying the Yanks
- 10:15Speaker 1: have a great road ahead, and they probably do, but
- 10:19Speaker 1: you know what, you gotta take care of business. You
- 10:22Speaker 1: gotta take care of business against the Royals. They are
- 10:24Speaker 1: a good team. They just knocked out the Orioles. They
- 10:34Speaker 1: knocked out the Orioles who have been struggling. But I
- 10:38Speaker 1: always think a wildcard team has momentum going into the
- 10:41Speaker 1: division series because the teams with the bye week, and yes,
- 10:45Speaker 1: the Yanks have home field throughout, but the team who
- 10:50Speaker 1: just got off the ld wildcard might have a little
- 10:53Speaker 1: more juice heading into the LDS. So for the Yankees,
- 11:02Speaker 1: for the Yankees, they the fan base, I can't say
- 11:06Speaker 1: this's gonna walk in the park. This is a very
- 11:10Speaker 1: great valid shot for Aaron Judge to get a ring. Yes,
- 11:14Speaker 1: there is no doubt about it. And the road is
- 11:18Speaker 1: a little easier than the Mets running through Philly now,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but I look at it his momentum and that last
- 11:28Speaker 1: homestand for the Yankees they only won two games. And
- 11:38Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing the Yanks have to correct
- 11:41Speaker 1: before we hit postseason played tomorrow night, is this idea
- 11:49Speaker 1: of the base running. This base running fundamentals. You gotta
- 11:52Speaker 1: tighten up the base running. If you don't, you're absolutely,
- 11:57Speaker 1: you know, screwed a little bit. And you might have
- 12:02Speaker 1: to stay away from Clay Holmes in key situations this postseason,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and you might have to play Verdugo in left because
- 12:13Speaker 1: of his fielding has been a little better than Domingas is.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But all these decisions have to be precise because you
- 12:24Speaker 1: can talk about all the Rolls or this and the other,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and the Yanks have fairly well in the regular season
- 12:28Speaker 1: against them. But but Rolls are feisty, man, and not
- 12:37Speaker 1: only that, they shut down the Orioles. Orioles only scored
- 12:42Speaker 1: a couple of runs both games, and the Yanks are
- 12:48Speaker 1: prone to get in these funks where it's either a
- 12:51Speaker 1: home run or not, and they're prone to as the
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yankees Empire would say, it makes some of these pitchers
- 13:02Speaker 1: look like Sion winners. So it's not an easy path.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It's a more favorable path for the Yankees, but still
- 13:18Speaker 1: a lot to get to. And then the and then
- 13:22Speaker 1: the Mets. I saw the comparison today. Phillies actually only uh,
- 13:30Speaker 1: Phillies won seven, Mets won six of the season series.
- 13:34Speaker 1: That's pretty good for the Mets to do against the
- 13:38Speaker 1: best team in the one of the best season the
- 13:40Speaker 1: National League. But that home ballpark in Philly is gonna
- 13:45Speaker 1: be ramped tomorrow and then Sunday it's gonna be ramped up.
- 13:59Speaker 1: And I think for the Mets, can they afford to
- 14:05Speaker 1: lose these leads early and come back and win. I
- 14:10Speaker 1: really appreciated last night's gutsy managing by Mendoza to go
- 14:14Speaker 1: to Diaz early to stop the bleeding after those two
- 14:19Speaker 1: home runs back to back forming Ankie Jake Bauer starting
- 14:23Speaker 1: the scoring for the Brewers with that homer, But to
- 14:28Speaker 1: have Diaz do what he did yesterday was so clutch.
- 14:31Speaker 1: A three inning win actually, but against the Phillies, who
- 14:44Speaker 1: always had that home field, who have a healthy I
- 14:48Speaker 1: believe Bryce and Schwarbur and you know Turner in all
- 14:52Speaker 1: these guys, it's not going to be an easy road. So,
- 14:59Speaker 1: like I said about the Brewers, Game two against the Brewers,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you gotta get to Philly early. Met's got away with
- 15:06Speaker 1: knocking them early yesterday. In fact, it took to the
- 15:09Speaker 1: ninth inning, but there was an zero for twenty stat
- 15:17Speaker 1: with the red of the Mets line up. Cannot happen
- 15:21Speaker 1: against the Phillies. And we can sit here and debate
- 15:25Speaker 1: how that's gonna work out. How can you jump start
- 15:30Speaker 1: the hitting? But much like the Royals hitting the Bronx
- 15:35Speaker 1: from momentum, I think the Mets head into this series
- 15:38Speaker 1: with momentum and only a day off in between. And
- 15:45Speaker 1: the advantage these wild card teams are having is that
- 15:50Speaker 1: the bats are able to stay warm Tomorrow night. The
- 15:59Speaker 1: bye week team, I guess we'd say the Yanks, Guardians, Dodgers,
- 16:06Speaker 1: and Phillies. We'll have to rev up the engines from
- 16:11Speaker 1: a new and really start fresh and almost blot out
- 16:21Speaker 1: all that regular season because that was a week ago now.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So let's see how the Yanks do it. Let's see
- 16:31Speaker 1: how the Phillies do it. I'm also particularly interested in
- 16:34Speaker 1: the Dodgers here because I want to see how the
- 16:36Speaker 1: Padres coming red hot against the Dodgers and see how
- 16:40Speaker 1: that shakes out. Guardians and Tigers will keep an eye
- 16:46Speaker 1: on it. But you know, the Yanks and the Mets
- 16:56Speaker 1: and even the Dodgers Padres, those three games right there
- 17:02Speaker 1: are sure to be fire electric because the teams that
- 17:11Speaker 1: are coming in ASO, the visiting teams have had an
- 17:14Speaker 1: electric boost of energy having won their wild Card series,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and the Yanks have to be buttoned up and the
- 17:27Speaker 1: Mets can't go over twenty. And those are my two
- 17:32Speaker 1: real big keys heading into the NL and ALDS. What
- 17:37Speaker 1: are your keys to the series? Alex at alex GNYC
- 17:40Speaker 1: dot com. Alex at alex GNYC dot com. But once again,
- 17:46Speaker 1: congratulations Howie Rose on your moment, and congratulations of the
- 17:53Speaker 1: Mets for this run and the Yankees congratulating the top
- 18:02Speaker 1: seed in the league. Now let's see what you do
- 18:06Speaker 1: with it. I'm gonna offer another Fanatics affiliate link, couple
- 18:10Speaker 1: of them below for both the Yanks and Mets postseason merch,
