- 1:41Speaker 2: It's time now for Johnny Dollar Hat Cummings in a
- 1:48Speaker 2: Allied Life. All right, Pad, what's new with you Johnny
- 1:51Speaker 2: have here of Everett Benton. No, I'm afraid not investment firm.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Done in New York real estate.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Oil mining, this and that. What about it? We're carrying
- 1:58Speaker 2: one hundred thousand dollars light policy on him.
- 2:00Speaker 4: So the last night he fell out of a fourteen
- 2:03Speaker 4: story window.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Oh, that's too bad. Accident. PATA was at suicide Maybe neither.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I think he got pushed. I'll be right over Bob
- 2:19Speaker 2: Bailey in the Exciting Adventures of a Man with the
- 2:22Speaker 2: Action Packed Expense Account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator as
- 2:27Speaker 2: true Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by a special investigator
- 2:45Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar to the Inner Allied Life Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut,
- 2:50Speaker 2: following as the account of expenses incurred during my investigation
- 2:53Speaker 2: of the Killer's list matter expenser con I'd have won
- 3:02Speaker 2: a dollar twenty for a taxi from my apartment to
- 3:04Speaker 2: the offices of Inter Allied. Pat Cummings look worried and
- 3:07Speaker 2: got straight to the point. I don't know, Johnny.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Maybe Benton wasn't pushed out at window. But there's something
- 3:13Speaker 3: about this dealer just doesn't smell right to me.
- 3:15Speaker 2: What can you tell me about this van Benton.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Everett Benton, forty five years old, doing very well in
- 3:20Speaker 3: business as far as we know. Last night about ten
- 3:22Speaker 3: o'clock he fell or jumped or was pushed out of
- 3:25Speaker 3: his office window.
- 3:26Speaker 2: This policy on him. Who's the beneficiary?
- 3:28Speaker 3: His wife, Claire?
- 3:29Speaker 2: What's she like about?
- 3:30Speaker 4: Twelve years younger redhead?
- 3:33Speaker 2: I see?
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yeah, well, what do you think?
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think I better have a talk with missus Benton.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I had him two fourteen dollars forty cents transportation and
- 3:46Speaker 2: incidentals to New York City. The Benton's apartment was on
- 3:49Speaker 2: East sixty seventh, very fashioned, more very expensive, and Claire
- 3:52Speaker 2: Benton looked right at home in her surroundings.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Do you mind if I excess a drink, mister.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Dallas, Not at all.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Missus Benton pretty wearing day.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I imagine it has.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Police questions reporters.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry to be throwing more questions at you at
- 4:07Speaker 2: a time like this.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I'm used to it by. Now, here's your drink?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Thanks? Cheers, yeah, cheers. You know you certainly seem to
- 4:17Speaker 2: be bearing up very well.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Yes, I suppose so, mister Dollar.
- 4:22Speaker 6: I think it would save time and embarrassment if we
- 4:24Speaker 6: had a few things understood such as you've heard of.
- 4:28Speaker 5: The ideal marriage. Well, Everett's and mine was not it.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Oh naturally, I'm very sorry he did what he did,
- 4:35Speaker 6: but well, we weren't exactly happy together.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I take it you think he committed suicide, Missus Benton.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Is there any doubt about that?
- 4:43Speaker 2: Apparently not in your mind, none at all. If it
- 4:46Speaker 2: was suicide, why did he do it?
- 4:49Speaker 5: I wouldn't know. Everett hadn't confided in me for some time.
- 4:53Speaker 5: We haven't been very close recently.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Well, Missus Benton, just supposed it wasn't suicide.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Everett had no enemies that I knew of.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I see about the insurance policy.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Yes, about the insurance policy, mister dollar, one hundred thousand dollars,
- 5:09Speaker 6: isn't it.
- 5:09Speaker 2: That's right when you get ready to file a claim.
- 5:11Speaker 6: I'm into in the morning, I see. Oh and one
- 5:17Speaker 6: other thing. It just so happens that I have an
- 5:20Speaker 6: alibi for last evening. Oh and it's the nicest kind
- 5:24Speaker 6: of alibi there is, mister Dollar.
- 5:26Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 5:27Speaker 5: It's air tight?
- 5:33Speaker 2: And that was Claire Bent, very calm and collected, and
- 5:37Speaker 2: incidentally anxious to collect. I thought her over all the
- 5:40Speaker 2: way to the Office of detective Lieutenant Tovitch a homicide.
- 5:43Speaker 2: That's item three a dollar sixty care fair.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I talked to her, Johnny. She's a hard one
- 5:48Speaker 4: to figure out.
- 5:49Speaker 2: What do you think Tovich? Did he jump or get pushed?
- 5:52Speaker 4: You get any ideas?
- 5:53Speaker 2: How about financial troubles? He was in the investment business.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Have you looked into that?
- 5:57Speaker 4: According to his lawyer, his affairs are in good shape. Oh,
- 6:00Speaker 4: he'd made his share of poor investments over the years,
- 6:03Speaker 4: wild cat oil leases, stuff like that, But in general
- 6:06Speaker 4: he was doing okay, he was worth a lot of dough, Johnny.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Okay, let's assume he was pushed out that window. What
- 6:13Speaker 2: was he doing in his office at ten pm?
- 6:15Speaker 4: I woundered about that too.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Any indication anybody was with him?
- 6:18Speaker 4: No, night watchman was in another part of the building
- 6:21Speaker 4: when Benton came in let himself in with his own key.
- 6:25Speaker 4: It could have been somebody else with him, all right,
- 6:26Speaker 4: But who?
- 6:27Speaker 2: Claire Venton says she has an alibi?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know who. I care for it much,
- 6:32Speaker 4: but I haven't been able to break it down.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Who is her alibi? Larry Santis Sandys runs a supper
- 6:38Speaker 2: club over in these fifties. Yeah, the ace of clubs.
- 6:42Speaker 2: He called Larry Sandys. Thanks Tovich. So I went calling again,
- 6:52Speaker 2: But this time it was different from my visit to
- 6:54Speaker 2: Claire Benton. In the first place, Satis didn't offer me
- 6:57Speaker 2: a drink, and in the second place, he wasn't very friendly.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Oh look, doll, I already told the cops that Claire
- 7:03Speaker 7: was here in the club last evening, all evening until midnight,
- 7:06Speaker 7: out in the bar most of the time.
- 7:08Speaker 4: What difference does it make.
- 7:09Speaker 7: How about the rest of the time we were talking
- 7:12Speaker 7: here in my office.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Just the tools, just the tool of us. Now, look, Dalla,
- 7:15Speaker 2: what it boils down to is you've each got alibis
- 7:18Speaker 2: for one another. Huh that's right.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I look, nosey boy, Claire didn't kill Benton.
- 7:24Speaker 2: At the moment, I wasn't thinking so much about her.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Wait a minute, if you're trying to pin this on me,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you and Claire have been pretty friendly, Santas she benefits
- 7:34Speaker 2: to the tune of one hundred grand by Benton's death.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Look, Dalla, dell a, you blowing smoke in the wrong direction.
- 7:40Speaker 4: I like the arrangement the way it was.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Why should I try to change it? Well, that's a
- 7:46Speaker 2: good question. So just let it drop. You getting me,
- 7:50Speaker 2: You've got nothing to worry about, Santas, if you've got
- 7:53Speaker 2: nothing to hide.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I don't want this kind of publicity.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's bad for my business.
- 7:58Speaker 4: You know what's wrong with you, Dolly.
- 8:00Speaker 2: You got those trouble occupational disease. You better just get
- 8:04Speaker 2: over it.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Sometimes it turns out to be fatal.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Act too, if yours truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment,
- 8:16Speaker 2: and now act too, if yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and
- 8:19Speaker 2: the killer's list matters. Looks like you didn't get any
- 8:30Speaker 2: further with Larry Satis than I did, Johnny Looktovich. Both
- 8:33Speaker 2: Satis and Claire Benton had a motive for killing her husband.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Matter of fact, two motives, money and getting Benton out
- 8:39Speaker 2: of their way.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Johnny, I'm with you. We're not even sure yet it
- 8:42Speaker 4: was murder. We do have something that indicates somebody might
- 8:45Speaker 4: have been in Benton's office with him, though, Yeah, what
- 8:47Speaker 4: is it? If I had a cigarette but one of
- 8:49Speaker 4: the ash trays different brand than benton smoke, could it
- 8:52Speaker 4: have been left there during the day janitor's as he
- 8:54Speaker 4: cleans out the ash trays about seven in the evening.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Of course, he could have overlooked one. So I don't
- 8:59Speaker 4: know whether it means any or not. Excuse me, Yeah,
- 9:02Speaker 4: homicide Toovich? Oh where, okay, I'll be right over, Johnny.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Looks like we've done ourselves a little epidemic.
- 9:13Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 9:14Speaker 4: Have you hear of a guy named Arthur Mayfield? Promoter?
- 9:17Speaker 8: No?
- 9:17Speaker 2: What about?
- 9:18Speaker 4: He just found him in an alley dead.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Wait a minute, don't tell me.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Yeah, fell out of a tenth floor hotel room.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Lieutenant Telvich and I went over to the West Side
- 9:36Speaker 2: hotel where Mayfield's body had been discovered. There was nothing
- 9:39Speaker 2: in this room to indicate anyone had been there with him.
- 9:42Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, there was nothing Curian. I
- 9:45Speaker 2: had him for a dollar? Ready, care fora to Claire
- 9:46Speaker 2: Breton's apartment to dollar.
- 9:49Speaker 6: I really don't see the point of this. I told
- 9:51Speaker 6: you twice that I did not know this Arthur Mayfield.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Did you ever hear your husband mention his name?
- 9:56Speaker 5: I've never heard the name until.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Now from you, missus Benton. Mind telling me where you
- 10:03Speaker 2: were last night around midnight?
- 10:06Speaker 5: I take it that's when Mayfield died.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Approximately, I suppose you have an alibi.
- 10:12Speaker 5: You suppose correctly, you.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Know something I wouldn't be at all surprised if you
- 10:18Speaker 2: were about to tell me you were with Larry Santis again.
- 10:22Speaker 5: You know somethings, Todell, That's exactly where I was last night.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I know Toovich. I know it could be just a coincidence.
- 10:32Speaker 2: The two guys fall or jump or get shoved out
- 10:35Speaker 2: of windows within twenty four hours. But I got a
- 10:38Speaker 2: hunch of some kind of connection between them.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Could be Johnny, But so far we haven't been able
- 10:42Speaker 4: to find.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Well, how about their past the armed forces?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Maybe I've already checked that out.
- 10:46Speaker 2: The answer is note, could they have been involved in
- 10:47Speaker 2: any sort of business deal?
- 10:49Speaker 4: I asked Benton's attorney about that. He's checking through all
- 10:51Speaker 4: of his papers. He's promised to call me.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And you haven't been able to find any organization they
- 10:55Speaker 2: both belong to. Any situation in which they could have
- 10:57Speaker 2: been thrown together.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Not so far. Unless they serve on a jury together
- 11:01Speaker 4: or something like that.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Well, don't laugh. That could be it, and they might
- 11:04Speaker 2: have convicted somebody who took this way of getting revenge.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah, check it out in courty if we find a connection,
- 11:09Speaker 4: But don't count on it, Johnny, don't count on anything.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I went back to my hotel room and stretched out
- 11:19Speaker 2: on the bed while I rehashed a whole deal. In
- 11:21Speaker 2: my mind, I thought about Claire Benton and Larry Satis.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I didn't trust either of them, but as Tovich had
- 11:28Speaker 2: pointed out, it was another thing to prove it. Okay, okay, coming, yeah, mister,
- 11:39Speaker 2: that's right.
- 11:39Speaker 9: You're investigating the murders of Benjamin Mayfield.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Well, I don't think they've been officially described as murders,
- 11:46Speaker 2: but they are, mister Dollar, I'm certain of it. Who
- 11:48Speaker 2: are you?
- 11:49Speaker 9: My name is Alvin Whiting, and I have some information
- 11:51Speaker 9: that may be of value to you. May I come in,
- 11:54Speaker 9: Come in, Come on, thank you. If you don't mind,
- 11:58Speaker 9: I'd like to look out the window a minute.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You're being followed. I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me.
- 12:03Speaker 2: What is this information you have, mister Whiting?
- 12:05Speaker 9: A couple of years ago, three men got together and
- 12:08Speaker 9: bought an oil lease a man named Tom Nolan.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Did you ever hear of it?
- 12:11Speaker 3: No?
- 12:11Speaker 9: He was a very eccentric man, hot tempered, violent. He
- 12:14Speaker 9: needed the money badly, so he sold the lease, which
- 12:16Speaker 9: then was a little better than worthless. Benton and Mayfield
- 12:20Speaker 9: were in that deal together.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I see, but I still don't understand what that has
- 12:23Speaker 2: to do with their murders.
- 12:24Speaker 9: I'm convinced they're killers. Tom Nolan getting revenge on them
- 12:27Speaker 9: in his own warped.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Way, revenge for buying a worthless oil ease from him.
- 12:32Speaker 9: Last week, oil was discovered on that property, a lot
- 12:35Speaker 9: of it. The property is now worth millions.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Ah.
- 12:38Speaker 9: I think that Nolan, with his twisted way of looking
- 12:41Speaker 9: at things, probably feels that he was cheated out of
- 12:43Speaker 9: that property.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You're suggesting that this Nolan isn't quite all there.
- 12:46Speaker 9: Huh, exactly, That's exactly what I mean. What's your connection
- 12:49Speaker 9: with all this, mister Whiting. I'll tell you what my
- 12:51Speaker 9: connection is, mister Dollar. I was in on the deal
- 12:53Speaker 9: with Benton and Mayfield. I was the third man.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Ah.
- 12:57Speaker 9: So you see, if my suspicions are correct, if Nolan
- 13:01Speaker 9: is the killer, then I'm the next man on his list.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. In a moment
- 13:19Speaker 2: and now Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and
- 13:22Speaker 2: the killer's list matter. I took Alvin Whiting down to
- 13:28Speaker 2: Lieutenant Tevich's office and he told his story again. I
- 13:31Speaker 2: could see that Telvitch felt the same way I did that.
- 13:33Speaker 2: At last, we were getting someplace.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Matter of fact, Johnny, I was about to call you.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Benton's lawyer just turned up the lease agreement linking Benton
- 13:42Speaker 4: Mayfield and mister Whiting. Here.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Question is, where's Tom Nolan.
- 13:45Speaker 9: I don't think I'll draw an easy breath until he's
- 13:47Speaker 9: been found and arrested.
- 13:49Speaker 4: We have a bullet out on him, mister Whiting. One
- 13:51Speaker 4: thing we found out about a year ago he served
- 13:53Speaker 4: time for assault and battery. Oh, mister Whiting, I suggest
- 13:56Speaker 4: you take every precaution until we pick up Nolan.
- 13:59Speaker 9: Don't worry, Lieutenant. I propose to remain in my apartment
- 14:02Speaker 9: until you apprehend him.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I'll post a man in the building to look after you.
- 14:08Speaker 4: I'm a Sidetovich. Oh what's the address? M all right,
- 14:15Speaker 4: thank you. We've located the little hotel where Nolan's been staying.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Come on, Johnny, that's mister Nolan's room at the end
- 14:27Speaker 4: of the hall.
- 14:28Speaker 2: They'll tell him.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Okay, quick, is I ian? I don't know.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I really haven't seen him since he rented the room
- 14:33Speaker 2: from me. How long ago was that? About a week ago,
- 14:36Speaker 2: mister Dollar.
- 14:37Speaker 4: If he's gone out since then, it must have been
- 14:39Speaker 4: at night when I was off duty. Here we are,
- 14:42Speaker 4: try your pass key quietly right?
- 14:51Speaker 2: Well gone bagging baggage.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Yeah, room's been used recently though, Hey cigarette, But same
- 15:05Speaker 4: brand we found in Benton's office. Doesn't prove anything, but
- 15:08Speaker 4: it might tie in.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Tom Nolan could be our boy. But where is he?
- 15:11Speaker 2: You say he rented the room from you, clerk.
- 15:14Speaker 4: What do he look like?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Oh?
- 15:15Speaker 4: Middle aged, as I remember, bushy hair, sort of a
- 15:18Speaker 4: wild look to him fits the general description Alvin Whiting
- 15:21Speaker 4: furnished us and the mugshot I pulled out of the files. Well,
- 15:24Speaker 4: all we can do now is rig a steak out
- 15:26Speaker 4: for him here and then wait.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Lieutenant Tovitch posted a couple of men in Nolan's rum
- 15:34Speaker 2: and we went back to headquarters while he was getting
- 15:36Speaker 2: out another pullet, and I went through Nolan's record assaultant battery,
- 15:40Speaker 2: resisting arrest. There was no doubt he was a violent
- 15:42Speaker 2: sort of guy, and with the indication wedding had given
- 15:45Speaker 2: us that Nolan was a little unbalanced, the weird revenge
- 15:48Speaker 2: motive might fit. Then something in the records caught my eye.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I went back to the office of Larry Santus at
- 15:54Speaker 2: the supper clevel.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Oh look, doll, I told you the last time you
- 15:58Speaker 4: were here.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And I got a few things to tell you, Santus.
- 16:01Speaker 2: The two murder victims, Mayfield and Benton, went in on
- 16:04Speaker 2: a business here with a man named Alvin Whiting. All right,
- 16:06Speaker 2: so I bought an oil least from Tom Nolan all
- 16:09Speaker 2: of a sudden last week that at least got real valuable.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Alvin Whiting figures that Nolan's the killer. He says he's
- 16:14Speaker 2: not all there, and he was trying to get his
- 16:16Speaker 2: own strange kind of revenge.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Look, Dolla, what's all this got to do with me?
- 16:20Speaker 2: That's what I want you to tell me.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Look, I don't know anything about any of them.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Last year, Nolan was arrested for a Sulthern battery. According
- 16:27Speaker 2: to the police records, the man who put up bail
- 16:29Speaker 2: for him was.
- 16:30Speaker 7: You okay, okay, So I put up bail for him. Look,
- 16:36Speaker 7: Tom Nolan's my uncle, Dalla. Sure he's offbeat, but he's armless.
- 16:40Speaker 2: A Sultan battery, harmless, soule.
- 16:42Speaker 4: He beat up a guy, that doesn't mean he kill anybody.
- 16:45Speaker 2: How did he get mixed up with Benton, Mayfield and Whiting?
- 16:47Speaker 4: Well, he.
- 16:49Speaker 7: Was bro I asked Benton's wife to get her husband
- 16:53Speaker 7: and the others interested in buying Time's least to get
- 16:55Speaker 7: him some dough.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I didn't know the least.
- 16:57Speaker 7: It turned out to be valuable to Nolan got out
- 17:00Speaker 7: of Jailly.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Left, Tom moved to Coopersville.
- 17:02Speaker 4: It's upstate.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yeah, well, he's had a room right here in the
- 17:05Speaker 2: city for the last week.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I didn't know that. Believe me, I didn't look. I
- 17:12Speaker 4: haven't heard from him for six months. That's the truth. Dollar,
- 17:17Speaker 4: I've told you all I know.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I still didn't trust Satus, but decided to follow up
- 17:26Speaker 2: the lead he'd given me about Coopersville. Maybe Tom Nolan
- 17:29Speaker 2: had gone back there. I called Tovich to tell him,
- 17:32Speaker 2: and he had a nasty little surprise for me. Alvin
- 17:35Speaker 2: Whiting had disappeared from his apartment. I didn't know whether
- 17:40Speaker 2: Tom Nolan had gotten to Whiting or not, but I
- 17:42Speaker 2: didn't know. I had to find Nolan in a hurry.
- 17:44Speaker 2: My high tailored to Coopersville. Was a small town with
- 17:46Speaker 2: half a dozen hotels and rooming houses. I mean the
- 17:49Speaker 2: rounds flashing Nolan's picture. Finally I struck.
- 17:52Speaker 8: Peter Well, Yes, I recognized that picture. That's Tom all right,
- 17:57Speaker 8: but he told me his last name was Niles.
- 18:00Speaker 2: You say he roomed here, missus Carr, Yes.
- 18:02Speaker 8: Kept himself mostly, but he didn't make no trouble for
- 18:05Speaker 8: anybody as far as I could see. We didn't hear
- 18:07Speaker 8: about six months ago. How the end of September. It
- 18:11Speaker 8: was then last week he left us.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Sure he probably found out they'd struck oil and moved
- 18:17Speaker 2: into the city.
- 18:18Speaker 8: You don't understand, mister Dawler. When I say he left us,
- 18:21Speaker 8: I mean that last week Tom Niles died.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And there I was, But all of a sudden the
- 18:32Speaker 2: deal started adding up in my mind. It was after
- 18:35Speaker 2: dark when I got to the graveyard and my flashlight
- 18:37Speaker 2: picked out the simple headstone Tom Niles. Yeah, Tom Nolan,
- 18:43Speaker 2: resting in peace, right where he'd been all through the
- 18:46Speaker 2: murders he was supposed to have committed. The shot knocked
- 18:50Speaker 2: the flashlight out of my hand. I hit the dirt,
- 18:53Speaker 2: but the flash had pegged the gun for me. Well, well,
- 19:02Speaker 2: Alvin Whiteing, oh my god, Oh don't worry. I'll get
- 19:07Speaker 2: you at doctor Whiting. I want you to be in
- 19:09Speaker 2: good shape to stand trial. How'd you work hire some
- 19:13Speaker 2: drifter to rent that room back in New York under
- 19:15Speaker 2: Nolan's name, some character you picked up in the park.
- 19:18Speaker 9: You've got You've got to understand that I had to
- 19:23Speaker 9: have the money I was in that I was.
- 19:26Speaker 2: You almost got the money too, didn't you. Yeah, it
- 19:29Speaker 2: almost worked. You rigged the story that Nolan was the killer,
- 19:32Speaker 2: that you were on his list of victims. That way
- 19:35Speaker 2: you end up in sole possession of the oilies. If
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'd only know he was. Yeah, never try to frame
- 19:41Speaker 2: a guy who's already dead. Expense account total ony six
- 19:50Speaker 2: dollars fifty cents remarks. I turned Whiting over to the
- 19:53Speaker 2: police and he made a full statement. Yeah, his motive
- 19:56Speaker 2: was money. He was in the hole gambling, debts and bills.
- 20:00Speaker 2: High cost of living, you might say, but I guess
- 20:03Speaker 2: he knows now it's still a real bargain compared to
- 20:06Speaker 2: the high cost of dying. Yours Truly, Johnny Doll, our
- 20:22Speaker 2: star will return in just a moment. Now here is

- 21:03Speaker 2: Jack Moyles, Tony Barrett, Harley Bear, and Carlton G. Young.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Be sure to join us next week, same time and
- 21:10Speaker 2: station for another exciting story of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 21:14Speaker 2: This is Dan Cumberly speaking.
- 21:37Speaker 3: This is the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 22:10Speaker 3: This is Andrew J.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
- 22:14Speaker 4: Man and his Wife. You're listening to the great detectives
- 22:17Speaker 4: of Old time Radio.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Well.
- 22:26Speaker 1: This plot is a very strong mystery plot, very different
- 22:31Speaker 1: than a lot of the Johnny dollars we've gotten from
- 22:33Speaker 1: this era. In fact, it calls to mind some of
- 22:37Speaker 1: the episodes of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar from the late
- 22:41Speaker 1: O'Brien and early John Lund era, where there would be
- 22:46Speaker 1: this story where Johnny would start out on one path
- 22:51Speaker 1: to solve the case and really really hit the suspects hard,
- 22:55Speaker 1: thinking that he was on the right trail, only to
- 22:58Speaker 1: turn out that he that there was something totally unrelated
- 23:03Speaker 1: going on. It's a good twist since we haven't had
- 23:08Speaker 1: it in a while. During the O'Brien and Lunn era,
- 23:13Speaker 1: it seemed like that happened every week, so it got
- 23:15Speaker 1: kind of repetitive. But here it works great. Well, now
- 23:20Speaker 1: we do turn to listener comments and feedback and mighty
- 23:24Speaker 1: hokey tweets in Adam, Why were fifties radio shows so
- 23:29Speaker 1: hesitant to say Soviets instead of you know, who were
- 23:33Speaker 1: they fighting Voldemort? Well that's a good question. Well, as
- 23:37Speaker 1: far as I know, they weren't fighting Voldemort. The best
- 23:42Speaker 1: explanation I can come up with, and there may be
- 23:45Speaker 1: others out there who know more about this is differing views,
- 23:50Speaker 1: and I should say it is differing views on how
- 23:53Speaker 1: to deal with programs that may speak to international lifetions.
- 24:01Speaker 1: You know, if there is a situation where the United
- 24:04Speaker 1: States and the Soviet Union are intense situations, do you
- 24:08Speaker 1: really want to run a bunch of programs that could
- 24:13Speaker 1: make people even more suspicious of the Soviets than they
- 24:17Speaker 1: actually are. Could that have some sort of destabilizing effect?
- 24:21Speaker 1: Certainly this was not a universal rule. I mean, I
- 24:25Speaker 1: was a Communist for the FBI was made no bones
- 24:28Speaker 1: about the fact that, yes, we're talking about the Soviets okay,
- 24:33Speaker 1: But obviously standards varied from program to program, and there
- 24:38Speaker 1: were certainly activists even in that time who didn't like
- 24:43Speaker 1: a hostile posture towards the Soviets, And so I would
- 24:48Speaker 1: my best guess from the information I have and what
- 24:50Speaker 1: I've read, is that that's the reason. If there's any
- 24:54Speaker 1: other interesting knucket, I would sure like to hear it.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Other more listener comment this one from over on Facebook
- 25:03Speaker 1: of Johnny Dowler, Michelle Wright's best series ever. Keep up
- 25:06Speaker 1: the great work only way I make it through my workday. Well,
- 25:10Speaker 1: thanks so much for the comment, Michelle, it's truly appreciating.
