Latest / The Recess Bell / Dead Actors in New Movies??
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey everybody, my name is Justin Greenberg, and we're gonna
- 0:11Speaker 1: talk about dead actors being in movies. Yay. This is
- 0:17Speaker 1: a major problem. Ground Control to Major Tom They're gonna
- 0:22Speaker 1: bring back David Bowie. They're gonna make a Labyrinth too.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I bet and bring back dead David Bowie without his blessing.
- 0:28Speaker 1: This is a major, major issue. And I bring this
- 0:33Speaker 1: up because of a movie that I saw called Alien Romulus. Now,
- 0:38Speaker 1: if you want to know nothing about Alien Romulus, this
- 0:41Speaker 1: is not the episode of film reel that you want
- 0:42Speaker 1: to be listening to. But if you want to have
- 0:45Speaker 1: minor spoilers while listening to me Rant, then you could
- 0:50Speaker 1: proceed to listen to this additional film reel. So I
- 0:53Speaker 1: was enjoying Alien Romulus, I had my issues with it.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We're not really gonna be focusing on the movie. I
- 0:59Speaker 1: want to focus on one aspect of the film, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: that is the character of Rook. Who is Rook? He
- 1:04Speaker 1: is an android portrayed by actor Ian Holme. Ian Holme
- 1:10Speaker 1: has been dead for a number of years now, but
- 1:13Speaker 1: with the permission of Ian Holme's widow, they used his
- 1:17Speaker 1: likeness to portray the character of Rook. This is something
- 1:20Speaker 1: that's gonna become an even bigger problem as artificial intelligence advances.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Now we're gonna never know if Ian Holme would have
- 1:27Speaker 1: wanted to be in this movie. Maybe he had a
- 1:28Speaker 1: conversation with his widow. Yeah, if they make an alien
- 1:31Speaker 1: movie years after my death, yeah, you could use my likeness.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We'll never know. Now actors are putting things in their
- 1:38Speaker 1: contracts saying you cannot use my likeness years after my death.
- 1:43Speaker 1: This is something that easily could have been written differently.
- 1:48Speaker 1: They did not need to have Ian Holme in this movie,
- 1:51Speaker 1: or his likeness rather in this movie because the character
- 1:54Speaker 1: of Rook is a brand new character to the Alien franchise.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Ian Holme played Ash, who was a synthetic or an
- 2:01Speaker 1: android in the nineteen seventy nine movie Aliened. So they
- 2:05Speaker 1: could have done a few things. One, they could have
- 2:07Speaker 1: just made it a different synthetic, a different android. You know,
- 2:10Speaker 1: we've seen Bishop, another android character in the Alien franchise,
- 2:14Speaker 1: so it didn't specifically need to be that model of android.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It added nothing else to the plot except stupid people
- 2:21Speaker 1: remember the likeness of that actor, and they clap like seals.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Oh oh, I remember that guy. Yeah, yeah, that's the
- 2:29Speaker 1: guy from the first movie. He looks really weird. First
- 2:33Speaker 1: of all, it looks It looked really weird. It looked
- 2:35Speaker 1: really off putting. It was not perfected, so it came
- 2:40Speaker 1: across like I was watching artificial Intelligence. Now, granted, the
- 2:44Speaker 1: character is an android, so maybe it worked a little
- 2:46Speaker 1: bit less creepy in that sort of role. But they
- 2:50Speaker 1: have not perfected bringing people back from the dead yet.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So Number one, like I said, they could have just
- 2:57Speaker 1: made it a different Android character that did not need
- 3:00Speaker 1: to be that original Android model. Number two, they could
- 3:04Speaker 1: have just recast the role. They could have just hired
- 3:07Speaker 1: an actor of that looked like the actor. They've done
- 3:10Speaker 1: that a million times in various different movies, whether they're
- 3:13Speaker 1: doing a younger version of a character, or you know,
- 3:16Speaker 1: maybe an actor dies so they have to recast. They
- 3:19Speaker 1: do that all the time. Ian Holme was great and Alien,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but let's be honest, majority of the people that are
- 3:25Speaker 1: watching Alien Romulus are probably not familiar with the Alien
- 3:31Speaker 1: film from nineteen seventy nine. They're just not so who
- 3:34Speaker 1: are you doing this for? The people that are fans
- 3:37Speaker 1: of Alien are upset that they're using a dead actor
- 3:40Speaker 1: and the people that are actually watching in the movie,
- 3:42Speaker 1: the younger audience has no recollection of this character. And
- 3:45Speaker 1: he's not this super iconic character. You know, we're not
- 3:48Speaker 1: talking Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Terminator. We're not talking John Rambo.
- 3:53Speaker 1: You know, Sylvester Stallone's character. This is one of the
- 3:56Speaker 1: many ensemble cast members in a movie from almost fifty
- 4:00Speaker 1: years ago. So you could have recast, you could have
- 4:04Speaker 1: written it as a different character, but no, they chose
- 4:07Speaker 1: to bring an actor back from the dead. I'm reminded
- 4:10Speaker 1: of Crispin Glover being used in Back to the Future
- 4:13Speaker 1: too for people I don't know. Crispin Glover was one
- 4:16Speaker 1: of the main characters in the original Back to the Future,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and they aged him up in that movie, meaning they
- 4:22Speaker 1: put makeup on him, they took a mold of his face,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and they made him look like an older man in
- 4:27Speaker 1: certain scenes in that movie. And there was some issues
- 4:31Speaker 1: with Crispin Glover not wanting to return to the sequel.
- 4:34Speaker 1: We've heard various different reasons as to why I didn't return,
- 4:36Speaker 1: whether it's money or differentiating opinions on what the script
- 4:40Speaker 1: should be. But he didn't return for Back to the
- 4:42Speaker 1: Future too, but they used his character George McFly. Now
- 4:47Speaker 1: that's fine. He didn't create the character. They could recast it.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You know what they did, They took that mold that
- 4:54Speaker 1: they used to create the makeup effect for Back to
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Future of the original movie and they put that
- 5:01Speaker 1: mold on a different actor and that led to a
- 5:05Speaker 1: very famous lawsuit and Crispin Glover ended up winning that lawsuit.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And now if you use someone's likeness in a movie
- 5:13Speaker 1: without their permission, even if it's through a makeup mold technique,
- 5:18Speaker 1: then you're gonna get sued. And I'm seeing very similar
- 5:22Speaker 1: things of bringing people back from the dead. Now again,
- 5:25Speaker 1: the widow signed off on this. But I want to
- 5:28Speaker 1: take you to another movie that came out last year,
- 5:31Speaker 1: The Flash. Oh everyone loved The Flash. What a great movie.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It definitely didn't lose hundreds of millions of dollars for DC.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So in that movie, there is the multiverse, and in
- 5:43Speaker 1: this multiverse they go to different various incarnations of DC
- 5:48Speaker 1: Film properties. And one of those DC Film properties they
- 5:52Speaker 1: go to is the nineteen fifties television series Superman, where
- 5:58Speaker 1: Superman was portrayed by an actor named George Reeves, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: again they got the permission from the estate to use
- 6:06Speaker 1: his likeness. If you're not familiar with the story of
- 6:09Speaker 1: George Reeves, George Reeves killed himself and partly two to
- 6:15Speaker 1: his work as Superman. He was extraordinarily depressed because of
- 6:19Speaker 1: his failed career and he was unable to find work.
- 6:22Speaker 1: He was sort of typecast in that role, and he
- 6:25Speaker 1: would talk to various different cast members of the Superman
- 6:29Speaker 1: Show and tell them that putting on this costume is
- 6:33Speaker 1: like putting on a monkey suit. He felt degraded, like,
- 6:37Speaker 1: oh my god, I'm Superman. I'm a better actor than this.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm not just this, you know, kids show, television star.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I could be in movies, I go win to Oscars.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just Superman. Though, So he killed himself
- 6:49Speaker 1: and they brought him back to place Superman, and to me,
- 6:54Speaker 1: that was out of all the awful things that that
- 6:57Speaker 1: Flash movie was that, right, there was the most embarrassing
- 7:03Speaker 1: aspect of that movie. Bringing back an actor that essentially
- 7:06Speaker 1: took his own life because of a role, and you're
- 7:09Speaker 1: gonna make him that role terrible, terrible? Where is this
- 7:13Speaker 1: going to lead to? This can lead to some really
- 7:16Speaker 1: really bad things later on down the line. We've seen
- 7:19Speaker 1: it already. We've seen people you know, file lawsuits and
- 7:23Speaker 1: put out complaints about using likeness with you know digital
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know art, like created artificial intelligent art. Taylor Swift
- 7:31Speaker 1: was going off last year because they were using her
- 7:33Speaker 1: likeness with AI art and they were you know, sexualizing
- 7:36Speaker 1: the art. So this is something that is going to
- 7:39Speaker 1: be very very important in our lifetimes. In the next
- 7:44Speaker 1: ten to fifteen years. We're going to see court cases,
- 7:47Speaker 1: We're going to see potential crimes be created. I mean,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you could fake someone's voice these days, and it's to me,
- 7:53Speaker 1: it's all similar. This all correlates to Ian Holme being
- 7:57Speaker 1: used in alien you know. I saw a story earlier
- 7:59Speaker 1: in the year where principle was being accused of saying
- 8:04Speaker 1: racist things and the guy who made the accusations used
- 8:09Speaker 1: artificial intelligence to create a voice for this guy. And
- 8:12Speaker 1: they later deduced that no, this is not real. This
- 8:16Speaker 1: is created using AI. And that's from a random guy
- 8:19Speaker 1: that has no background in technology creating a voice, and
- 8:23Speaker 1: he was able to trick a lot of people now
- 8:25Speaker 1: think about like really really wealthy individuals with vast knowledge
- 8:30Speaker 1: of artificial intelligence. Think about governments that are able to
- 8:33Speaker 1: create certain things. I don't want to be a conspiracy guy,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but you know, we will be able to fake certain things.
- 8:41Speaker 1: That is going to be it's going to be detrimental
- 8:44Speaker 1: to our society. And I think starting right now with
- 8:49Speaker 1: having actors in movies, we're starting down that slippery slope. Now,
- 8:54Speaker 1: is this a crime? Of course not. We got the
- 8:56Speaker 1: permission from the estate, so you know, with thean home,
- 9:00Speaker 1: not a crime. But I'm telling you, years from now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I think they're gonna make movies about this aspect of filmmaking,
- 9:09Speaker 1: of taking dead people and bringing them back. So that's
- 9:12Speaker 1: just a little rant. I want to go on about
- 9:14Speaker 1: bringing actors back from the dad. You know they're doing
- 9:16Speaker 1: it with musicians now, and listen, is it cool in
- 9:20Speaker 1: one aspect that, yeah, you'll be able to see certain actors.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You know, I love the movie The Crow with Brandon Lee.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Would it be cool to see more versions of that character?
- 9:33Speaker 1: I guess so. But also we'll never know what they
- 9:37Speaker 1: would have wanted. So one way, selfishly, I mean, yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I mean, if they could perfect this, because it's not
- 9:44Speaker 1: perfected yet, but if they could perfect this years from now,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and you could get the same performances of actors of
- 9:50Speaker 1: like Jimmy Stewart or Orson Wells, and you can bring
- 9:53Speaker 1: them back in a modern setting. It is fascinating. I
- 9:56Speaker 1: do see the interest in that, but again without their
- 10:00Speaker 1: actual permission, it's a slippery slope. So we'll see what
- 10:05Speaker 1: the years bring on. You know, as far as this
- 10:07Speaker 1: technology of people actually being upset, you know, I know
- 10:10Speaker 1: people are upset, but it's not going to stop companies
- 10:14Speaker 1: from continuing this trend. All right. That is my little
- 10:17Speaker 1: rant about dead actors. One other quick rant about Alien Romulus.
- 10:22Speaker 1: They say a line in that movie that pissed the
- 10:25Speaker 1: hell out of me. The iconic line from nineteen eighty
- 10:27Speaker 1: six is Aliens, where Sigourney Weaver says to the alien queen,
- 10:31Speaker 1: get away from her, you bitch. What an iconic line,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and that had such a deeper meaning when that line
- 10:38Speaker 1: was delivered. Sigourney Weaver was sort of a motherlike character
- 10:43Speaker 1: to Newt, and Newt was being sort of held captive
- 10:47Speaker 1: by the alien queen. So it's one woman, one mother
- 10:51Speaker 1: fighting with another mother, and her saying get away from her,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you bitch, meant so much more than what it meant
- 11:01Speaker 1: in Alien Romulus. That's right. They said the same exact
- 11:05Speaker 1: line in Alien Romulus. Why because of those same dumb
- 11:09Speaker 1: people that would clap when they see Ian Home. Oh
- 11:13Speaker 1: my god, yeah, I remember the line. I remember. It
- 11:15Speaker 1: makes no sense. Those characters never met. Is this just
- 11:19Speaker 1: a common phrase that is being said in the Alien universe?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Get away from her, you bitch. No, it meant something
- 11:25Speaker 1: in Aliens from nineteen eighty six because again the mother
- 11:29Speaker 1: daughter connection with the other female character. It's said by
- 11:33Speaker 1: a random male android in this scene for no reason
- 11:37Speaker 1: other than dumb people in the theaters clap because they
- 11:40Speaker 1: remember that line being said. Lines being shared by characters
- 11:45Speaker 1: that have no connection because they're in the same film
- 11:47Speaker 1: franchise is again one of my biggest pet peeves. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: have a lot of complaints when it comes to movies,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and that's why we're here to do the film world
- 11:54Speaker 1: for you to listen to my rants. All right, have
- 11:57Speaker 1: a great day everybody, or night. I don't know when
- 11:59Speaker 1: you're listening to this. Yebye.
