Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'll get a you, Bloody Champions, Welcome to another installment
- 0:03Speaker 1: of you project. It's me and it's you, and I'm
- 0:06Speaker 1: excited today because I was just saying a fran who
- 0:09Speaker 1: I was chatting with off air. I was saying a
- 0:11Speaker 1: fran about one or two times, maybe three times a year,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I reach out through my social media to someone else
- 0:18Speaker 1: because I'm not the guy that gets the guests. I'm
- 0:20Speaker 1: the guy that talked to the guests, and as you
- 0:23Speaker 1: all know, Melissa and Tiff are the guest getters. And also,
- 0:28Speaker 1: I think you know I don't say shit that I
- 0:30Speaker 1: don't mean. I've been following this young lady for a
- 0:33Speaker 1: while on which that sounds creepy, doesn't it. All right,
- 0:37Speaker 1: let's let me undo that so well it is. I've
- 0:40Speaker 1: been virtually following this lady for a while. Her name
- 0:44Speaker 1: is Franz. She goes by fran the Singer. You'll find
- 0:46Speaker 1: her on Instagram. Go there right now, give her a
- 0:49Speaker 1: follow fran the Singer. And I heard her voice. I
- 0:54Speaker 1: fucking love her voice. And I'm not saying that because
- 0:57Speaker 1: she's listening to me right now. I actually just send
- 0:59Speaker 1: her a message, and your voice is amazing. Would you
- 1:02Speaker 1: like to have a chat with me on my show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I thought she probably wouldn't respond because a lot of
- 1:07Speaker 1: people don't and and but I said, nonetheless. Either way,
- 1:09Speaker 1: if you do or you don't, your voice is great.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Congrats blah blah blah. Anyway, she got back to me
- 1:15Speaker 1: and giddy up, butter Cup, she's here. I'm so excited.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Hi friend, Hi Greg, thank.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You for having me. This is so exciting.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Australian audience is going to heat if I start
- 1:29Speaker 3: mimicking your Australian accent.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But it's I'm not it's not my own doing. I
- 1:33Speaker 2: just can't help.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, well you just let yourself go. I don't
- 1:36Speaker 1: want I don't want any barriers. I don't want any
- 1:38Speaker 1: you know. It's just a creative platform for you to
- 1:42Speaker 1: be whatever you want to be. When did you Have
- 1:45Speaker 1: you ever been on an Australian podcast before?
- 1:48Speaker 4: Never?
- 1:49Speaker 3: Never, But I have a lot of listeners. It's like
- 1:52Speaker 3: the second biggest audiences in Australia for me, which is
- 1:57Speaker 3: I don't know how that happened. And the other only
- 2:01Speaker 3: connection I have to Australia is that I took a
- 2:03Speaker 3: dialects course my last year of college, so I just ah, yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 3: So I just like doing the dialect and I used
- 2:12Speaker 3: it a fair bit at one of my jobs to
- 2:15Speaker 3: make more money.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Really what was that? What was that? What was that?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Can we?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Yeah? I worked at a bakery for like six months
- 2:24Speaker 3: and I was a cashier and I found that if
- 2:26Speaker 3: I talked, if I spoken in Australian accent, I would
- 2:31Speaker 3: make more tips. And I just did it as an experiment.
- 2:33Speaker 3: When one shift, I was like, let me just compare
- 2:36Speaker 3: today if I do it all shift and if I
- 2:37Speaker 3: do it tomorrow or if I don't do it tomorrow
- 2:40Speaker 3: what happens? And I would make more money if I
- 2:43Speaker 3: That is like the novelty of it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That is hilarious.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what's funny is like when you when
- 2:51Speaker 1: you are you right, it's like you you probably your
- 2:56Speaker 1: your sense of you is that, well, I don't have
- 2:59Speaker 1: an accent, has an accent, whereas I'm like, well what
- 3:02Speaker 1: do you mean we don't And of course, but being
- 3:05Speaker 1: an Australian living in Australia talking the way that I
- 3:08Speaker 1: do and listening to one million ausies a day, it's
- 3:12Speaker 1: like it's nothing special if anything as objective as I
- 3:17Speaker 1: can be about my own accent. To me, it sounds
- 3:20Speaker 1: somewhat abrasive and unsophisticated and kind of unpolished. It's you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: but when I've been to the States a bunch and yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 1: people are like, oh wow, I love your accent, or
- 3:34Speaker 1: I can't understand. I can't understand what the fuck you're saying.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I went to a place called Breckenridge, which is in Colorado,
- 3:41Speaker 1: to do some work like up in the snow, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: I checked in. So this is, you know, twelve thousand
- 3:50Speaker 1: feet above sea level or whatever. And I arrived there
- 3:53Speaker 1: and I went to check in at this conference and
- 3:58Speaker 1: I said, and the guy asked me my name, like
- 4:01Speaker 1: are you checking in? I said yes, he said name
- 4:03Speaker 1: and I said Harper and he goes he looks at me.
- 4:06Speaker 2: It was Happer.
- 4:08Speaker 1: He's like, no idea, I said Harper, and he still
- 4:13Speaker 1: looked at me. And then there was a lady next
- 4:15Speaker 1: to him and he brought her over so they could
- 4:17Speaker 1: try and understand this weird fucking man. And I said,
- 4:21Speaker 1: I said, I said Craig Harper, and they go, oh,
- 4:25Speaker 1: mister Harper.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And I so.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I had to if I said Craig Harper to them.
- 4:31Speaker 1: It sounds like you have.
- 4:34Speaker 3: A bunch of marbles in your mouth, is the best
- 4:36Speaker 3: way to describe.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, all right, well now that you've told us
- 4:41Speaker 1: how brilliant, right now, this is an exercise fraught with
- 4:44Speaker 1: danger because you know that people are fucking terrible at
- 4:46Speaker 1: Australian accent.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Oh, I did not say it was good.
- 4:50Speaker 1: This is a lot of pressure.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Saturdays and Sundays, I would do an Australian accent that
- 4:54Speaker 3: sounds a little bit kiwi, and I would make slightly
- 4:58Speaker 3: more tips on the weekends.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I did not show you an.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Accent that's not bad, that's not really really fast.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You almost can't hear the mistakes if I do.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It really fast.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And no, no, not.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Away from I'm from Adelaide.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Wow, dude, that is pretty good.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah. If I don't talk a lot, I can get
- 5:18Speaker 3: away with like a little bit.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I'm always amused in American shows when and we're still
- 5:25Speaker 1: movies where they get an American playing an Australian who's
- 5:29Speaker 1: fucking terrible. Yeah, I'm like, you know, we have Australian actors, right,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you know you could actually.
- 5:36Speaker 2: To fly out. Probably that's their excuse.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I don't know anyway, well, we love having you on.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Thank you so much for doing this. Let's let's find
- 5:48Speaker 1: out a little bit about you. You before we before
- 5:51Speaker 1: we started recording, you kind of said to me, I
- 5:55Speaker 1: had to look through the back catalog of guests and
- 5:57Speaker 1: topics and whatever, and you're like, ah, you know I
- 6:00Speaker 1: don't have a PhD. You know I'm not a doctor.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And I said, well, it's one you don't need to be.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And two, most of our at least half of our
- 6:09Speaker 1: guests are not academics. And it's really just a conversation
- 6:12Speaker 1: about I love the fact that, like, you've got an
- 6:16Speaker 1: interesting story, but you're also still the story is still happening, right,
- 6:22Speaker 1: You're still doing the work and you're in the middle
- 6:24Speaker 1: of it, and it's trying to learn from people. And
- 6:26Speaker 1: I said to you, even though I'm kind of a
- 6:28Speaker 1: teacher and kind of an academic, you can definitely teach
- 6:31Speaker 1: me as much as I can teach you, just about
- 6:33Speaker 1: different things. So let's start in the beginning. Where are
- 6:38Speaker 1: you from? Like, where were you born?
- 6:41Speaker 3: So I was born in Costa Rica. It's funny that
- 6:44Speaker 3: we started talking about accents, because I don't think it's
- 6:49Speaker 3: noticeable or placeable where I'm from based on how I
- 6:52Speaker 3: speak at all. Yes, I was born in Costa Rica,
- 6:56Speaker 3: and then I moved to the US with my mom
- 6:59Speaker 3: and my younger son, Sture, when I was six or seven,
- 7:03Speaker 3: and then after that we kind of moved every year
- 7:05Speaker 3: or two. So first place was Alabama, which is a
- 7:10Speaker 3: wild place to learn your English from, very sad, yes,
- 7:21Speaker 3: right there, a very very bless your heart community. They
- 7:25Speaker 3: say that all yea blessure.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And we did that a couple of years.
- 7:30Speaker 3: We went to California, which is, you know, not too
- 7:35Speaker 3: far across the country, and then we went to Oregon
- 7:39Speaker 3: for a year. We went back to California for another
- 7:42Speaker 3: year because if it didn't work the first time, it
- 7:44Speaker 3: will work the second time. And then I finished high
- 7:48Speaker 3: school in North Carolina.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And then I was sick of moving.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I came to New York for college, and I planted
- 7:55Speaker 3: myself here and I've been here maybe six or seven
- 7:58Speaker 3: years now.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And what did you do with college?
- 8:02Speaker 3: I actually went to school for acting.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I didn't even consider music.
- 8:08Speaker 3: As a path for myself until twenty twenty one, which
- 8:12Speaker 3: is a bit after the pandemic hit.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Cannot be rude, How old are you be?
- 8:18Speaker 2: So rude. Yeah, I just turned twenty seven.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, you're a donosaur. Dude, Wow and still braithing
- 8:24Speaker 1: and living. That's amazing, because.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I actually do feel like a dinosaur. Once you leave
- 8:29Speaker 3: like twenty five, twenty six, you're like, oh, no, it's
- 8:32Speaker 3: not mid twenties anymore.
- 8:34Speaker 1: How about you shot the fuck up?
- 8:36Speaker 3: No, that's so annoying.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Oh I'm twenty seven, poor me. I'm larious.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Obviously, I'm comparing myself to people accomplishing the same or
- 8:47Speaker 3: more than me at seventeen. So it's all about you
- 8:50Speaker 3: know what you're comparing yourself to. Yeah, but yeah, yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I know I have.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Like plenty of time.
- 8:58Speaker 3: But I only did two years of college before COVID
- 9:01Speaker 3: hit and I took a leave of absence.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I paused school. I was engaged at the time.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I took a pause on that and immediately just was
- 9:15Speaker 3: finding different ways to feel the pain that I was feeling,
- 9:18Speaker 3: which was a lot. I didn't immediately turn to music. Boy,
- 9:22Speaker 3: that would have been so beautifully healthy. I you know,
- 9:26Speaker 3: smoked a lot. I started smoking a lot, I started
- 9:28Speaker 3: drinking a lot.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And then you realize that it does work at.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Numbing you out, and you reach a point though, where
- 9:35Speaker 3: you just don't feel anything. You don't feel the good
- 9:37Speaker 3: and you don't feel the bad. You just get stuck
- 9:40Speaker 3: in like a loop. And I guess like my mom's
- 9:45Speaker 3: roots started helping me because she used to sing a
- 9:47Speaker 3: lot around the house. She's a very emotional person, so
- 9:52Speaker 3: if she's feeling really good, it's like music is expressing it.
- 9:57Speaker 3: She's loud, she's she's really expressive, and if she's sad,
- 10:02Speaker 3: it's very obvious with music also, and you can just
- 10:06Speaker 3: tell everything in her body is very expressive. And I
- 10:09Speaker 3: guess I started just letting that, letting myself do that
- 10:13Speaker 3: more and singing around the house and listening to music.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And I started just singing a lot, crying a lot
- 10:21Speaker 3: like that was I saw that as like weak because
- 10:25Speaker 3: it feels very weak. Yeah, I mean I'm very like,
- 10:30Speaker 3: I'm very like stick up my butt, like get it right,
- 10:34Speaker 3: perfectionist type of person.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So at that time that was hard.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And yeah, music then I just once I started singing
- 10:44Speaker 3: and felt how much lighter I felt doing that. I
- 10:50Speaker 3: always have a hard time expressing that feeling, but once
- 10:53Speaker 3: I started letting it out and emoting through music, I
- 10:56Speaker 3: guess is the best way to say it. I there
- 10:59Speaker 3: was just a moment where I was like, Oh, this
- 11:00Speaker 3: is what I'm supposed to be doing. Nothing else lets
- 11:02Speaker 3: me feel this. Catharsis like doing this.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's so true. It's like like when you find that thing,
- 11:11Speaker 1: that thing that that makes you feel that way and
- 11:15Speaker 1: that you it's like the insection of therapy and joy
- 11:22Speaker 1: and purpose. It's like when those things kind of it's
- 11:26Speaker 1: like that fruit salad of the human experience where you're like, oh,
- 11:32Speaker 1: like for me, when I'm when I'm I do a
- 11:35Speaker 1: lot of speaking, right, So I talk to a lot
- 11:37Speaker 1: of audiences, and there's you know, you know when you're
- 11:42Speaker 1: kind of when you're singing. I guess for you, But
- 11:46Speaker 1: for me, it's like when I'm speaking and when there's
- 11:48Speaker 1: an audience, and it's like I'm in flow and it's
- 11:52Speaker 1: not coming out of my brain, it's coming through me,
- 11:55Speaker 1: not from me. Now. I know this sounds weird, right.
- 11:58Speaker 3: But this is exactly the thing that I love to
- 12:01Speaker 3: talk about because it's really hard to explain.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah, because and it's like, oh, I'm I'm almost a
- 12:10Speaker 1: passenger here in the own, in my own fucking thing
- 12:14Speaker 1: that I'm running where like and I think there's this
- 12:19Speaker 1: I think there's this I don't know almost this creative
- 12:23Speaker 1: magic that we have. I don't have yours. You maybe
- 12:26Speaker 1: don't have. Well, you're a very fucking good communicator anyway,
- 12:30Speaker 1: but you know it's different, and I feel like for me,
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's a responsibility. I think, all right, well, Craig, you
- 12:36Speaker 1: can communicate. You're not very good at many other things,
- 12:39Speaker 1: but you can think clearly and you can communicate. What
- 12:43Speaker 1: are you going to do with that? Like how do
- 12:45Speaker 1: you serve people with that?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Like?
- 12:48Speaker 1: How do you make other people's lives better? And also
- 12:52Speaker 1: because you know, like which you don't know any of this,
- 12:55Speaker 1: we're just meeting each other. But I was this morbidly
- 12:58Speaker 1: obese kid, so insecure, fucking attention seeking, you know, self doubting,
- 13:05Speaker 1: self loathing, all this bullshit. So I always tried to
- 13:07Speaker 1: get approval through being fucking funny or captivating or hilarious.
- 13:11Speaker 1: And then you get over that, right kind of, and
- 13:15Speaker 1: then you just think, oh, well, now what do I
- 13:17Speaker 1: do with this? And how do I how do I
- 13:20Speaker 1: turn this into a how do I turn this into
- 13:24Speaker 1: maybe a career as well, like because what's.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Even left anymore? Sometimes when you're not trying to do
- 13:29Speaker 3: anything for anyone else. There's a period of time where
- 13:32Speaker 3: you're like, what even who am I if I'm not
- 13:36Speaker 3: trying to.
- 13:37Speaker 2: That's very relatable.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I relate to that a lot. But the only way
- 13:43Speaker 3: that I found that I can like go into that flow,
- 13:47Speaker 3: especially related to what I was saying about being very controlling,
- 13:53Speaker 3: is when I see myself as a vessel for the
- 13:57Speaker 3: information and the work that I've put in to go through.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Because if I think that I'm creating the flow, there's
- 14:04Speaker 3: no flow, you know what I mean, When you're like
- 14:08Speaker 3: locked in and all the work that you've put in
- 14:10Speaker 3: is just happening. I have to remember that it's not me.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I'm just like a vessel that's allowing the things to happen.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Because the second I think it's me, then I'm like
- 14:23Speaker 3: concerned about how it's going to be perceived and if
- 14:27Speaker 3: it's connected to me, and if it's what I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 3: Like you know what I'm saying.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's almost like you need to get out of the
- 14:35Speaker 1: way so it can happen.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Exactly through you.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it is magic. It is like a sense that
- 14:44Speaker 3: we haven't quite tapped into how to call it, but
- 14:47Speaker 3: it is magic.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I think, and you know the irony is I think, friend,
- 14:54Speaker 1: when you try to dissect it intellectually, you almost fuck
- 14:57Speaker 1: it up. Yeah, you know, it's like, dude, stop fucking
- 15:02Speaker 1: overthinking it. Because sometimes I'll do a gig where you know,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm talking for three hours and it's good, it's solid,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and you know, there's good feedback, it's nice, but it's
- 15:13Speaker 1: very strategic and it's Craig being Craig and talking about stuff.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And then there are other times when it's amazing despite me,
- 15:23Speaker 1: not because of me. Right, it's just been something special
- 15:26Speaker 1: going on where people come up and people are crying
- 15:30Speaker 1: and people and there's just this energy in the room.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And then later I'll try and deconstruct what that was
- 15:37Speaker 1: about so I can replicate it, and I can't. I
- 15:41Speaker 1: don't even know, you know, it's like no, I just
- 15:43Speaker 1: know that. Yeah. The more I try and strategize that,
- 15:47Speaker 1: the worse I am. So for me, it's like, yeah,
- 15:51Speaker 1: like I said, almost getting out of the way of
- 15:53Speaker 1: what can happen with people and with all.
- 15:57Speaker 3: The energy in the room, right time, right place, you
- 15:59Speaker 3: couldn't have planned it. I mean, some people get good
- 16:02Speaker 3: at kind of setting themselves up for success. But uh,
- 16:07Speaker 3: but yeah, it's it's that's exactly correct. Like it feels
- 16:11Speaker 3: like the more that you try to overthink in I'm
- 16:13Speaker 3: a huge overthinker. So I could talk about as I
- 16:17Speaker 3: come for you so bad? I mean I'm doing pretty
- 16:20Speaker 3: good at it lately, but but I mean, no, it's
- 16:24Speaker 3: not going so bad. Actually I'm getting better at it
- 16:27Speaker 3: with age.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Oh well, now that you're a dinosaur, I mean, there'd
- 16:32Speaker 1: be all that maturity in wisdom.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I set you up for that joke, thank you.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, how do you like? How do you manage you like?
- 16:44Speaker 1: How do you like? What's your go to for you know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: for turning down the fucking internal noise and getting out
- 16:50Speaker 1: of the overthinking mind and the anxiety and the chaos?
- 16:54Speaker 4: Is it?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Obviously music is a big part. Is there anything else?
- 16:59Speaker 3: I don't know that I use music to turn it off?
- 17:05Speaker 3: Maybe creating music. But this is a good time, I
- 17:09Speaker 3: guess to delve into that because I am under a
- 17:14Speaker 3: lot of self imposed pressure right now to write my
- 17:17Speaker 3: second EP or album or whatever it's gonna be. I'm
- 17:20Speaker 3: trying to write every day and I actually just wrote
- 17:23Speaker 3: a song this morning. I'm super excited about it, and
- 17:26Speaker 3: the only way I was able to get to like
- 17:29Speaker 3: a fun, silly place, which is not usually where I
- 17:32Speaker 3: gravitate towards, is to pretend that no one's ever gonna
- 17:36Speaker 3: see it. It's like a journal entry and I'm just
- 17:39Speaker 3: gonna la la la and see what comes out. But
- 17:44Speaker 3: that's usually what helps me a lot, is to pretend
- 17:48Speaker 3: that no one is gonna see it. That's the only
- 17:51Speaker 3: time that I can really tap in and let things happen.
- 17:54Speaker 3: That way, there's no pressure. I can scrap it if
- 17:56Speaker 3: it's bad. So that worked.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I've been trying that recently. That worked this morning.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Sometimes it doesn't work because you're just too caught up
- 18:05Speaker 3: and trying to make a thing. You're hearing too many
- 18:08Speaker 3: of like industry voices about make a hit, and they
- 18:11Speaker 3: should sound like this and sound like this, and that
- 18:14Speaker 3: stuff is never anything that's going to sound like someone
- 18:16Speaker 3: else is never going to sound as good as the original.
- 18:19Speaker 1: So I think also maybe once like if you're just
- 18:23Speaker 1: in that creative space and you're not, you're not over
- 18:28Speaker 1: cerebralizing it. It's that there's less brain and more creative flow.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I think the moment that you start to think about, oh,
- 18:36Speaker 1: what will people think of this, How will this sound
- 18:38Speaker 1: to them? How will this be experienced? Then fear comes
- 18:42Speaker 1: in and fear fucks up creativity.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's the exact opposite of the excitement that
- 18:50Speaker 3: you get after you're in flow for thirty minutes. I
- 18:52Speaker 3: can talk about this now because I just had this
- 18:54Speaker 3: feeling and it's yeah, oh amazing. When you're like in
- 18:58Speaker 3: flow and you you lock in for thirty minutes to
- 19:01Speaker 3: an hour and you write something that feels so good
- 19:05Speaker 3: and so authentic. The feeling is really when you write
- 19:08Speaker 3: it and it communicates exactly what it was in your brain,
- 19:11Speaker 3: and then you know you did the right job. And
- 19:14Speaker 3: then I was just like listening to it over and
- 19:15Speaker 3: over and over again. And that excitement is the exact
- 19:19Speaker 3: opposite of the fear of rejection from the public, and
- 19:23Speaker 3: it's so fueling, like that fuels the entire day. Now.
- 19:27Speaker 3: The downside is that then if I don't create something
- 19:29Speaker 3: like that or I'm not able to tap in for
- 19:31Speaker 3: a week, I feel awful and I feel like I'm
- 19:33Speaker 3: not contributing my purpose and I feel like I'm falling
- 19:39Speaker 3: behind and all these things. But that like one day
- 19:42Speaker 3: where I can nail it or at least feel for
- 19:44Speaker 3: myself that I nailed it. Even if I send it
- 19:47Speaker 3: ad to executive producers and no one responds and they're
- 19:50Speaker 3: all busy to listen to it. I have a sense
- 19:53Speaker 3: of accomplishment that I did a thing that I was
- 19:56Speaker 3: supposed to do with my gift. But that that's only
- 20:00Speaker 3: you know. I'm trying to find ways that I can
- 20:04Speaker 3: access that more often so that I can feel that more.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I think also, you know, you like part of you,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you me everyone who wants to kind of connect with
- 20:17Speaker 1: an audience and be and that is through a version
- 20:21Speaker 1: of creativity. As hard as it is, You've got to
- 20:25Speaker 1: be okay. I mean, you've got no choice, but you've
- 20:27Speaker 1: got to be okay with rejection and people who like
- 20:30Speaker 1: you or don't like you, or you know, once your audience.
- 20:33Speaker 1: You know, I've said this before. I get three or
- 20:35Speaker 1: four e miles a week from people going basically, you're
- 20:38Speaker 1: a fucking idiot, I hate you, you know, and and
- 20:41Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, Brian, think, oh yeah, yeah, because you
- 20:44Speaker 1: know not or you know you're a dickhead or you know.
- 20:47Speaker 1: But for every one of those, I have a lot
- 20:49Speaker 1: of really nice stuff, you know, But that I wanted
- 20:53Speaker 1: to share something with you. Nobody in the world's heard this.
- 20:56Speaker 1: My audience will, but you're the second person in the world, right,
- 20:59Speaker 1: so you know, like I have my have you seen
- 21:02Speaker 1: my Instagram page or no?
- 21:04Speaker 3: Yes?
- 21:04Speaker 1: Other okay quotes yeah, yeah. So I always write stuff,
- 21:08Speaker 1: and the funny thing is trying to figure out what
- 21:11Speaker 1: people will like or what will resonate. So at the minute,
- 21:15Speaker 1: my views are over the last thirty days, like over
- 21:20Speaker 1: nine million, right, so it goes it's going nuts at
- 21:24Speaker 1: the moment, so like three hundred thousand views a day.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And I always try to figure out, how do I
- 21:30Speaker 1: write something that's going to connect with people. It's not
- 21:33Speaker 1: too many words, it's not too few words. It actually
- 21:36Speaker 1: conveys something that might be helpful or and it's maybe
- 21:41Speaker 1: a little bit funny.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:42Speaker 1: But then other times I write things I want to
- 21:45Speaker 1: read you something I wrote. I wrote this the other
- 21:48Speaker 1: day and this came out in about three minutes, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: I like it, but I know that this is not
- 21:55Speaker 1: something that would resonate, so I didn't put it up,
- 21:59Speaker 1: but I should be put it up and go fuck,
- 22:01Speaker 1: it doesn't matter if people like it or not. But
- 22:03Speaker 1: because it's not funny, right, or because it's not cheeky,
- 22:06Speaker 1: or because I don't say fuck. So this is what
- 22:08Speaker 1: I wrote. I am everywhere and nowhere, everything and nothing,
- 22:12Speaker 1: inspiration and desperation. I am the scene and the unseen.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I am the calm and the chaos, laughter and tears,
- 22:19Speaker 1: light and darkness. I am complicated and simple. I am
- 22:23Speaker 1: problems and solutions, fear and courage, vulnerability and power. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: am the creator of your reality. I am thought and
- 22:32Speaker 1: I wrote that, and I went, I fucking love that
- 22:34Speaker 1: and I wrote it, which sounds ridiculous, right, But I'm
- 22:37Speaker 1: like that is I think about how much our mind
- 22:40Speaker 1: basically shapes our reality.
- 22:44Speaker 3: And I love that. You should post that.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I like it too, But I thought, but then
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think, why wouldn't you post it? Just because it
- 22:51Speaker 1: might not go well?
- 22:53Speaker 3: So I'm going to how could anyone disagree with what
- 22:56Speaker 3: that's true?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not a rise in chaos?
- 23:02Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent, one hundred percent.
- 23:04Speaker 3: So I think people just wouldn't like it because it doesn't.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Say fuck well, just because it's not fucking, you know,
- 23:11Speaker 1: cool enough for it. It's not cheeky enough for it's
- 23:14Speaker 1: not outrageous enough for But then yeah, because there's this
- 23:18Speaker 1: dichotomy because you want to create, like for example, with you,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you want to create music that people really connect with,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and so in a way you've got to be strategic,
- 23:28Speaker 1: but also at the same time, you don't want to
- 23:29Speaker 1: be too strategic because that kills creativity, right.
- 23:34Speaker 3: And most of the time what gets me to send
- 23:36Speaker 3: it is that if you like it, there's gotta be
- 23:42Speaker 3: someone out there who also see, like thinks that's cool, yes,
- 23:47Speaker 3: or else you think that you're super special, like you
- 23:51Speaker 3: wrote that and you thought, wow, that's cool, and you
- 23:54Speaker 3: think you're the only brain in the world that thinks
- 23:56Speaker 3: that that's super cool.
- 23:58Speaker 1: There's no way when you did that Ala Lujah Joline
- 24:05Speaker 1: kind of mash up? Do you call it that?
- 24:09Speaker 4: Hey?
- 24:09Speaker 1: Everyone go listen to that? And it's like, you know
- 24:11Speaker 1: what I love about that. It's not produced, it's not
- 24:16Speaker 1: it's just you sitting there with your guitar just doing.
- 24:19Speaker 3: This terrible guitar and I'm just clunking away that it's cool.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Dude. It's like, well, it's clear you can play guitar,
- 24:26Speaker 1: but you're not John Mayer. But you can play guitar,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but your voice is fucking outrageous. And there's just this
- 24:33Speaker 1: this intertwining of these two different beautiful kind of the experiences,
- 24:41Speaker 1: like that creates this new thing, Like you created a
- 24:44Speaker 1: new thing, like nobody's ever done that that way, that
- 24:48Speaker 1: and that that one thing that's now well over a
- 24:51Speaker 1: million views, and that's just on instag and I'm sure
- 24:54Speaker 1: it's in other places much more like.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Mist about that video, and speaking of self doubt, is
- 24:59Speaker 3: the morning that I recorded that. I was in a
- 25:01Speaker 3: hotel room filming for a show and I was just
- 25:06Speaker 3: like trying to make content and I did it a
- 25:09Speaker 3: bunch of versions and narrowed it down to that one.
- 25:11Speaker 3: I sent it to a friend and I was like,
- 25:12Speaker 3: should I post this? And they were like, ah, you've
- 25:15Speaker 3: done better, And I guess so I'll just post it
- 25:19Speaker 3: on TikTok because that's where I post like my yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 3: I just shoot it to the wind and then it
- 25:25Speaker 3: starts blowing up and I was like, wait, wait a minute,
- 25:30Speaker 3: what's going on? And I guess it just captured. It
- 25:32Speaker 3: was the right moment, the right like feeling that I
- 25:36Speaker 3: was in that yeah, But I definitely didn't know that
- 25:41Speaker 3: when I posted it.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I was kind of thinking.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I could redo it. The runs could be cleaner, there
- 25:48Speaker 3: could be more excitement, there could be a build up,
- 25:50Speaker 3: there's always you know what I mean, you can go
- 25:52Speaker 3: on forever.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so that one surprised me as well.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Do you know what I find encouraging? And this sound
- 26:00Speaker 1: both harsh for some people and positive for you, but
- 26:05Speaker 1: it's like, I look around and there are people that
- 26:07Speaker 1: are way, way, way more famous and successful in a
- 26:11Speaker 1: musical sense than you with less talent. That's what gives
- 26:16Speaker 1: me hope for you. Like I think, I mean, you're
- 26:19Speaker 1: already doing well, but you'd like to be, you know,
- 26:22Speaker 1: on a bigger stage and all of those things. I'm assuming, right,
- 26:25Speaker 1: But I look at you and I think I said
- 26:28Speaker 1: to someone else yesterday. In fact, yesterday I had coffee
- 26:31Speaker 1: with a friend of mine in the morning, a guy,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and I said, look at this. Just look at this
- 26:37Speaker 1: girl and tell me what you think. He's like, she's
- 26:40Speaker 1: fucking amazing. So he started following you his names.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Oh thank you.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So Scott's following you right anyway, I go, So I go,
- 26:48Speaker 1: how good is this girl? He's like, she's fucking amazing?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Who is she? What did you like? Everyone that I
- 26:53Speaker 1: show the like, who's this girl? So You're going to
- 26:57Speaker 1: be the next big thing. That's my prediction. I want
- 26:59Speaker 1: you to be, I hope.
- 27:00Speaker 2: So I'm manifesting it. I'm working hard.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I still I do music Monday through Friday. I still
- 27:07Speaker 3: a bar tend on the weekends. Yeap, no shade to
- 27:11Speaker 3: the job. I love it, but.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I can't wait to just do music full time.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Tell us about just digressing. Digressing for a moment. So
- 27:21Speaker 1: you live in New York right now?
- 27:22Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:23Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 27:24Speaker 2: Is that a lot around the city.
- 27:26Speaker 3: And I sing at the bar that I work at
- 27:29Speaker 3: and I love it here.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, is it. I've been to the States a bunch,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I've never been to New York. Try and try and
- 27:39Speaker 1: capture the essence of New York for my listeners. I'm
- 27:42Speaker 1: sure most have not been. What is? What is New York?
- 27:45Speaker 1: Describe New York to us like we've all seen it
- 27:47Speaker 1: from the outside looking in, but I've never been there.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Okay. Also, one thing that you said before is that
- 27:55Speaker 3: you said that there's a lot of talent here than
- 27:59Speaker 3: a lot of people are famous. And the one thing
- 28:04Speaker 3: about that is that.
- 28:05Speaker 2: For people that are like mega pop stars. Sorry, this
- 28:08Speaker 2: is just stuck in my head.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Because yeah, yeah, a sutle.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Reason that they're there. It's like showing up to the
- 28:13Speaker 3: studio every day, writing every day, getting it produced every day.
- 28:17Speaker 3: It's like also the hard working aspect of it. So
- 28:20Speaker 3: whenever I hear that, I'm like, well, but maybe they're
- 28:23Speaker 3: just working harder.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And it's true, they are just working harder.
- 28:27Speaker 3: So there's something that I'm doing that I could be
- 28:30Speaker 3: doing that isn't just like, oh man, I just the
- 28:34Speaker 3: things aren't working out for me and I'll just sit
- 28:36Speaker 3: here and be more talented and just live with it.
- 28:40Speaker 3: I have to get there somehow because I'm there's got
- 28:43Speaker 3: to be something else that I can be doing. And
- 28:45Speaker 3: that's where you get caught in like the I'm never
- 28:48Speaker 3: doing enough.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Thing I have. That is a really good point that
- 28:52Speaker 1: you might and it's it's absolutely valid, Like like you
- 28:57Speaker 1: have a gift ride so that's just But then how
- 29:00Speaker 1: you develop that gift, how you develop that skill, what
- 29:03Speaker 1: you do with it, how you in science we call
- 29:06Speaker 1: it operationalize it, you know, put it into out into
- 29:10Speaker 1: the world. Right, Yeah, because there are some I mean,
- 29:14Speaker 1: there are how many brilliant people are there that nobody's
- 29:17Speaker 1: ever heard of?
- 29:19Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, I'm just lucky enough to be on your
- 29:23Speaker 3: podcast now and get my audience a little bit bigger
- 29:27Speaker 3: and have people hear about it and then hopefully make
- 29:29Speaker 3: things that speaks to their emotions and keep building on that.
- 29:34Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean I'm just lucky, and then I
- 29:37Speaker 3: just have to put the more hard work behind it.
- 29:39Speaker 3: But anyways, to describe New York, I mostly really like
- 29:46Speaker 3: it because there's less of a barrier between strangers. We
- 29:49Speaker 3: moved a lot, so the barrier between strangers was kind
- 29:53Speaker 3: of gone. Anyway, in my upbringing, there wasn't a lot
- 29:56Speaker 3: of time to get to know people in my grade,
- 29:59Speaker 3: I have a year to be your best friend. So
- 30:01Speaker 3: here's everything about me, and then tell me everything about you.
- 30:04Speaker 3: So that helps you a lot when you move a lot,
- 30:07Speaker 3: because there's just you don't waste a lot of time
- 30:10Speaker 3: getting to know people. You kind of present yourself as
- 30:12Speaker 3: you are faster, yeah, which has its pros and its cons.
- 30:19Speaker 3: But yeah, in New York, I just like how many
- 30:23Speaker 3: people there are here. I like that I get to
- 30:24Speaker 3: walk everywhere. I haven't driven since high school, so that's great. Yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 3: And you just get to feel the effects of your
- 30:33Speaker 3: energy faster because you're around more people. So if you're
- 30:38Speaker 3: putting out great energy, you just get rewarded for it
- 30:42Speaker 3: faster because there's so many things that could happen, you
- 30:47Speaker 3: know what I mean.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I feel that way. I think that you
- 30:52Speaker 1: ever sorry, Do you ever feel like I grew up
- 30:56Speaker 1: in the country, right, So I grew up in a
- 30:58Speaker 1: kind of rural quad and I live in what's nothing
- 31:02Speaker 1: like New York, that's for sure, but I live now closer.
- 31:05Speaker 1: I live in a suburb out of Melbourne, bottom of Australia,
- 31:10Speaker 1: and I live on a main street, and you know,
- 31:12Speaker 1: it's pretty busy. It's pretty like I'm surrounded by cafes
- 31:16Speaker 1: and bars and retail stores and restaurants and gyms and
- 31:19Speaker 1: all the normal nail shops and massage shops and bullshit
- 31:22Speaker 1: that's in any city, right, But sometimes I've just got
- 31:26Speaker 1: to go somewhere where there's none of that. I just
- 31:28Speaker 1: need space and quiet. And I'm also lucky because I
- 31:33Speaker 1: live eight hundred meters from the beach, so I can
- 31:35Speaker 1: just go there and it's pretty quiet. Do you feel
- 31:39Speaker 1: like you need to get away from the busyness and
- 31:41Speaker 1: the noise and all bit good mayhem? But like, there's
- 31:45Speaker 1: a lot of mayhem, there's a lot of nonstopness. Do
- 31:48Speaker 1: you just need to get away from that ever?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Nothing beats to the beach like I could stare out
- 31:55Speaker 3: at the ocean for hours whenever we go, because I
- 31:58Speaker 3: don't get to see it as often anymore. I just
- 32:01Speaker 3: got back from LA for a show, and I went
- 32:04Speaker 3: with my best friend and we went to Santa Monica
- 32:07Speaker 3: and just stared at the water for what seemed like
- 32:09Speaker 3: two hours, because it is the most.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Peaceful, calming thing, especially compared to the city.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Usually, when I crash out and just have worked really hard,
- 32:23Speaker 3: the closest I get to quiet is just isolating in
- 32:27Speaker 3: my room for two days and just really which isn't ideal.
- 32:32Speaker 3: I would love to just pack up and go to
- 32:33Speaker 3: the mountains for a week and probably write a whole
- 32:36Speaker 3: other album over there that that's coming. It was really good.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It was really good. I met with an agency that
- 32:45Speaker 3: I'm trying to make some connections with. I had my
- 32:49Speaker 3: first headlining little showcase beautiful. Yeah. I had some cool
- 32:55Speaker 3: people come out and see it. I put into practice
- 32:59Speaker 3: some mindfulness things that could get me more out of
- 33:03Speaker 3: my head and in flow, which had a lot to
- 33:07Speaker 3: do with remembering that I deserve it and I'm not
- 33:11Speaker 3: tricking anybody into being here. Sometimes I feel like it's
- 33:18Speaker 3: crazy and I'm in a dream and there's no way
- 33:20Speaker 3: that I could do this and it'll go really well.
- 33:23Speaker 3: And so, yeah, my best friend is kind of in
- 33:26Speaker 3: that whole field of adjusting how you think about things
- 33:31Speaker 3: and really having an impact on how things go.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So we did a lot of.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Quote unquote manifestation type of stuff where you just picture
- 33:39Speaker 3: yourself doing well or change and not self sabotaging by
- 33:45Speaker 3: you know how, when you have things memorized, sometimes the
- 33:49Speaker 3: thought will pop in your head that's like, oh, you're
- 33:50Speaker 3: gonna mess up the next word. You're going to mess
- 33:53Speaker 3: it up. I don't know what that is, but I'll
- 33:56Speaker 3: do that to myself sometimes and I mess it up
- 33:58Speaker 3: and it's just confirming that I'm right and it's weird.
- 34:01Speaker 3: So I tried not to do that and the show
- 34:03Speaker 3: was great. It was a good test that your mind
- 34:06Speaker 3: does a lot of power.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny because you want to be awesome, but
- 34:13Speaker 1: you don't want to try too hard because when you
- 34:14Speaker 1: try too hard then there's anxiety and anxiety and anxiety
- 34:20Speaker 1: kind of kind of inversely correlates with performance.
- 34:24Speaker 3: You know, yeah, I had to see it as not
- 34:27Speaker 3: I have to do well to impress the people that
- 34:29Speaker 3: are important that are in this room. But of course
- 34:32Speaker 3: this is what I have to this is what I do.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I'm a singer.
- 34:36Speaker 3: It's gonna go great because I sing. And then, yes,
- 34:38Speaker 3: that was really surprising that at twenty seven that was
- 34:41Speaker 3: late for me to learn. Yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I mean even though you're a dinosaur and
- 34:48Speaker 1: clearly you're on the home straight, but as a singer,
- 34:52Speaker 1: you're young, right, like it's four years, Like you've been
- 34:55Speaker 1: singing for four years? Really? Am I right in that?
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 35:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:03Speaker 3: It started really slow, just making little videos at home,
- 35:07Speaker 3: posting them on a private account. Then I was working
- 35:10Speaker 3: at a coffee shop and I would sing on their
- 35:11Speaker 3: little open mike nights, and it's slowly.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Do you have a you know, one of the things
- 35:19Speaker 1: that we talk about on the show a lot is
- 35:21Speaker 1: getting better whatever that means, you know, whether or not
- 35:23Speaker 1: that's changing your body or changing your business or your career,
- 35:26Speaker 1: or you know, being less stressed, more calm, more productive,
- 35:30Speaker 1: more efficient, producing better outcomes. Do you have like any
- 35:35Speaker 1: strategy for just forget the career stuff and the brand
- 35:40Speaker 1: and the exposure. But as a singer, is it just organic?
- 35:44Speaker 1: Do you have lessons? Do you have a coach? Do
- 35:46Speaker 1: you how do you get better as a singer and
- 35:49Speaker 1: a writer. Mmm?
- 35:55Speaker 3: I just started going to a coach regularly, just because
- 35:58Speaker 3: I think I need to have better technique that I
- 36:01Speaker 3: can rely on.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Other than just this feels good and this feels good.
- 36:07Speaker 3: That's not always the best for your vocal health. But
- 36:11Speaker 3: that's very recent. I really only notice the difference over time.
- 36:18Speaker 3: There's a video on my Instagram where I show a
- 36:20Speaker 3: video from four years ago where I first started doing
- 36:22Speaker 3: a cover and the like the tone and the ease
- 36:26Speaker 3: of the runs and everything is so different now just
- 36:30Speaker 3: because of practice, you can let go more once that's
- 36:34Speaker 3: just in your base of knowledge now. Yeah, but I
- 36:39Speaker 3: don't know that I'm I've just been doing it so
- 36:43Speaker 3: much because I love to do it, and so you
- 36:45Speaker 3: just get better the more you do something, like with anything. Yeah, writing,
- 36:50Speaker 3: I don't even know if I'm getting better. I'm just
- 36:52Speaker 3: getting better at not overthinking. I'm getting I'm expanding my vocabulary.
- 36:58Speaker 3: That's really what it is.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Over the years, you expend.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Your vocabulary based on your taste and what you listen to,
- 37:03Speaker 3: your options to choose from get wider. Yeah, so it
- 37:07Speaker 3: just seems like you're better, but you just have learned more.
- 37:10Speaker 3: And now instead of these three notes that you usually
- 37:12Speaker 3: go to, now you have seven that you think of faster.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, same with writing, So then you can let
- 37:18Speaker 3: go more and it feels actually less like work. Yeah,
- 37:23Speaker 3: because you know you just got this treasure trove of options.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I had to ask a cheesy, predictable question, but I
- 37:29Speaker 1: am genuinely interested. So you're on the voice, Uh, how
- 37:35Speaker 1: is that? How is that?
- 37:38Speaker 3: It was good? Uh? Hold on, let me try to
- 37:41Speaker 3: answer honestly and not script.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like I didn't even want to ask that question,
- 37:47Speaker 1: but I think it's a significant thing, and I thought,
- 37:51Speaker 1: how actually, how was I.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Tell you how it was?
- 37:54Speaker 3: Let me get in comfortable position. First off, did not
- 37:57Speaker 3: expect to go on it. I that was the biggest surprise,
- 38:01Speaker 3: and that was probably what led to my downfall, is
- 38:04Speaker 3: that during no part of it did I think, oh, yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I deserve this.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 3: I was terrified to lose it the whole time. So
- 38:13Speaker 3: if I did anything like that ever again, I would
- 38:16Speaker 3: completely change that mindset. And you could tell too, And
- 38:18Speaker 3: how I was singing just blacked out.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Just remember the words, remember the words, hit the right note.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Things were forced. I wasn't breathing right. My heart rate
- 38:29Speaker 3: so fast, and that affects your breathing. That affects everything.
- 38:33Speaker 3: You can't sing right if your heart's rates like going
- 38:36Speaker 3: like that.
- 38:38Speaker 2: But I did learn a lot through that experience.
- 38:41Speaker 3: I learned like that I can perform under a lot
- 38:44Speaker 3: of pressure. Yeah, I I was angry upon leaving, and
- 38:56Speaker 3: I learned that.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Everyone has their.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Time and nobody knows the reason why. I didn't understand
- 39:03Speaker 3: why I was leaving. At the time that I left,
- 39:05Speaker 3: I didn't understand some decisions that were made, and it
- 39:08Speaker 3: kind of doesn't matter. And I came to realize that
- 39:10Speaker 3: because for some reason, and I have understood the reasons now,
- 39:16Speaker 3: my partner had to keep going. He needed more exposure,
- 39:19Speaker 3: he needed to be in front of more people for
- 39:21Speaker 3: more time. And I was kind of good. I had
- 39:24Speaker 3: like a good following, I had a good basis and
- 39:27Speaker 3: I had to leave the contract at that exact time
- 39:29Speaker 3: to be able to do the EP and sign with
- 39:34Speaker 3: the people that I'm signed with now and carry on
- 39:36Speaker 3: and put out my original music. But in that moment,
- 39:40Speaker 3: I just couldn't understand what I did wrong, and I
- 39:43Speaker 3: was just I beat myself up so bad. So yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 3: it's kind of brutal to have a moment like that's
- 39:50Speaker 3: so public, but then everyone forgets about everything two days later,
- 39:54Speaker 3: like everything else.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, so it's.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Just self involved to think, oh no, everyone's gonna no,
- 40:00Speaker 3: everyone's gonna forget. Yeah.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Yeah, well we didn't say it, so you're okay.
- 40:08Speaker 3: It was fine, Like it was good. I'm not it
- 40:11Speaker 3: was great. It was just what was going on mentally.
- 40:14Speaker 3: I know that it could have been better. I could
- 40:16Speaker 3: have done more mentally to propel myself, but I didn't
- 40:18Speaker 3: have the tools at the time. I was so new
- 40:21Speaker 3: to it. I felt like a baby.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Yeah. How much writing do you do?
- 40:27Speaker 5: Well?
- 40:27Speaker 3: Now I'm writing every day just because I'm working on
- 40:30Speaker 3: my new EP. But before I wrote musically, I did
- 40:34Speaker 3: a lot of free writing, which I don't know if
- 40:36Speaker 3: you're familiar with free writing.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Like have you read.
- 40:40Speaker 2: The Artist's Way.
- 40:42Speaker 3: No, it's this book by Julia Cameron, and she wrote
- 40:46Speaker 3: it basically to help artists.
- 40:49Speaker 2: It applies to writers, any type of artist, just tap.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Into creativity, and she readed this thing called morning pages.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Will you write three type whatever, three stream of consciousness,
- 41:01Speaker 3: just whatever it could be. I woke up today and
- 41:04Speaker 3: I'm feeling bad and I have to do laundry, and
- 41:06Speaker 3: it could be just bullshit. Whatever is circling around your brain.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Realistically that day that if you don't get it out
- 41:13Speaker 3: on paper, is going to be swirling around and then
- 41:15Speaker 3: you just never get to the end point. Yeah, So
- 41:18Speaker 3: by spewing all this bullshit for three pages or however
- 41:21Speaker 3: much it takes every morning, you start to open up
- 41:26Speaker 3: the vessel to the ether to receive ether, but you
- 41:29Speaker 3: get it receiving more ideas and you just empty the
- 41:32Speaker 3: junk out. So I would either do that a lot,
- 41:35Speaker 3: or I would just if I'm going through something stressful,
- 41:38Speaker 3: I would find that you have a lot of the answers.
- 41:42Speaker 2: You have more answers than you think. You just haven't
- 41:44Speaker 2: gotten to the end.
- 41:45Speaker 3: When you are forced to reach the end of the sentence,
- 41:48Speaker 3: you find you know exactly what you need to do
- 41:51Speaker 3: to get yourself out of the rut. It's just so
- 41:53Speaker 3: annoying to get there. Yes, and there's so many thoughts
- 41:57Speaker 3: that get in the way. I'll be thinking I'm sad
- 41:59Speaker 3: today because someone and so said this, But.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I don't want to think about that.
- 42:04Speaker 3: I need to do my laundry and how many loads
- 42:06Speaker 3: do I need to do before my friends come over?
- 42:08Speaker 3: You just you jump away from that finishing the freaking
- 42:12Speaker 3: point and then if you're just like shit the rest
- 42:15Speaker 3: of the day, and then I don't make music. So
- 42:18Speaker 3: sometimes that helps either get the musical idea out or
- 42:21Speaker 3: just clear the bullshit that's not letting me.
- 42:26Speaker 1: You know. One of the interesting things I'm thinking about
- 42:28Speaker 1: as you're talking is like, simultaneously we don't want to
- 42:32Speaker 1: look for people's approval because that kind of compromises like
- 42:36Speaker 1: who we are and how we present ourselves. But at
- 42:39Speaker 1: the same time, for both of us, for your career
- 42:43Speaker 1: to work, you need people's approval, do you know what
- 42:47Speaker 1: I mean? Because you want them to buy your music,
- 42:49Speaker 1: you want them to come here, you sing, you want
- 42:51Speaker 1: them to do what we're doing now, which is to
- 42:54Speaker 1: you want raving fans. You need it.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:58Speaker 1: So I think in the middle of that practical reality
- 43:00Speaker 1: of well, I want people to listen to my podcast,
- 43:03Speaker 1: I want people to talk about it, I want people
- 43:06Speaker 1: to buy my books. I want people to you know,
- 43:08Speaker 1: whatever it is. But at the same time, I almost
- 43:14Speaker 1: need to forget about that in order for it to work.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Because people are drawn to authenticity.
- 43:21Speaker 3: It's like a weird code. The more yourself you are,
- 43:23Speaker 3: the less you care about it, the more they like
- 43:26Speaker 3: you because they see you don't care about it.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's an irony. And it's
- 43:32Speaker 1: like you like.
- 43:33Speaker 3: A sixth sense. They can tell when you're faking it.
- 43:37Speaker 3: You can tell when you're faking it, you can tell
- 43:39Speaker 3: when other people are faking it or performing. There's just
- 43:42Speaker 3: like something there that you're like, no, I'm you're not
- 43:45Speaker 3: talking to me.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I think that's the gap between persona and person Yeah,
- 43:53Speaker 1: you know, it's like, oh, this is not friend, this
- 43:56Speaker 1: is the Fran Show totally.
- 43:59Speaker 3: You know. Maybe I just feel like when I bartend,
- 44:03Speaker 3: I get to see that a lot and when people's
- 44:06Speaker 3: personas drop, whether because they're drinking or they get comfortable.
- 44:10Speaker 3: So I guess I observe that a lot, and I
- 44:13Speaker 3: see when people are being authentic and how that draws
- 44:16Speaker 3: people into whether it's a story or them talking about
- 44:20Speaker 3: themselves or whatever it is. But I love to observe
- 44:24Speaker 3: that at work. It's really interesting.
- 44:25Speaker 1: H And another irony is like the more people try
- 44:30Speaker 1: and be likable, the less likable they are, like dude,
- 44:34Speaker 1: don't don't or you know, like I don't even how
- 44:40Speaker 1: fuck it I'll say. You know, guys trying to impress women,
- 44:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh god stop, because trying to be impressive
- 44:48Speaker 1: is the opposite, Like it creates the opposite outcome of
- 44:52Speaker 1: what you think, because we all know what's going on, like, and.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Some women can spot that intention and see that they're
- 44:58Speaker 3: trying so hard and they feel bad and it it's sweet,
- 45:02Speaker 3: but yeah, you know what I mean. Like, sometimes you
- 45:05Speaker 3: see a guy trying so hard and you're like, oh,
- 45:09Speaker 3: you're really showing, like you're showing everything, like you're really trying.
- 45:13Speaker 3: And that's endearing because in a way that's being authentic
- 45:16Speaker 3: because they're showing they really want it. Yeah, but it's
- 45:20Speaker 3: more like off putting when they're putting on a front
- 45:23Speaker 3: like their big shit and they're not and that's yeah,
- 45:27Speaker 3: there's nothing to work with there, all.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Right, everyone, So we just took him any break because
- 45:32Speaker 1: I chicily asked Frand if she would sing a song,
- 45:35Speaker 1: and I probably should have checked with her before we
- 45:38Speaker 1: went live. But she said, yes, I'm very excited, So
- 45:43Speaker 1: tell us what you're gonna sing.
- 45:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna sing your favorite Craig. I'm gonna do Joline
- 45:47Speaker 3: over Hallelujah. I'll just do a verse and a little chorus.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, ladies and gentlemen. Friend the singer.
- 46:00Speaker 4: H your beauty is beyond compare with flaming lock of
- 46:10Speaker 4: auburn hair, with ivory skin and eyes of amalpleans.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Your smile is like a.
- 46:22Speaker 4: Breath of spring, your voices soft like samoan, and I
- 46:30Speaker 4: cannot compete with you.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Jolie Joly, Joly Jly Joly, Jolie, happen.
- 47:01Speaker 4: He talks about in his sleep. There's nothing that I
- 47:06Speaker 4: can do to keep from crying when he calls you
- 47:12Speaker 4: the Jolie.
- 47:16Speaker 3: And I can eas understand how you get easy.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Take my man, but you don't know what he means
- 47:28Speaker 4: me Jolie, Joe.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Joely Joely Joy Joe.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Wow, Wow, very unprepared, a little rough, but you get it.
- 47:59Speaker 4: Dude.
- 47:59Speaker 1: You are a gift from God.
- 48:03Speaker 3: You can have the part that was smoothest, cut out
- 48:06Speaker 3: the parts where I went it was.
- 48:09Speaker 1: All phenomenal, like shut up, amazing amazing. Hey, well, I
- 48:18Speaker 1: think we need.
- 48:18Speaker 3: To get decided if you want to put it in or.
- 48:21Speaker 1: No, we're definitely going We're definitely putting that in. And Melissa,
- 48:25Speaker 1: leave all this conversation into because.
- 48:27Speaker 4: This is.
- 48:29Speaker 1: So What I'm going to say is, thank you so
- 48:32Speaker 1: much for coming to chat with me. I want to
- 48:33Speaker 1: chat with you again, maybe in a few months, because
- 48:37Speaker 1: there's a few doors I'd like to open, and we
- 48:40Speaker 1: want to keep I want to keep supporting you and
- 48:42Speaker 1: keep promoting you and putting out the frand love to
- 48:45Speaker 1: the world. We'll say goodbye, affair butt friend. Thank you
- 48:48Speaker 1: so much for chatting with me, Thanks for being real
- 48:51Speaker 1: and raw and vulnerable, and thanks for being part of
- 48:54Speaker 1: the you project.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Thanks Greg, I'll see you in Australia sometime.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Come on, dude, Mom
