- 0:00Speaker 1: I have a morsel of murder.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Oh really.
- 0:07Speaker 1: What began as an online fantasy involving someone Karen Whittaker
- 0:11Speaker 1: believed was actor Tom Sellick. Have you heard this No,
- 0:16Speaker 1: but I can see where it's going ended in tragedy
- 0:19Speaker 1: at the Bermuda Dunes, California home she shared with her husband,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Authority say, eighty year old Donald Whittaker and seventy nine
- 0:27Speaker 1: year old Karen Whittaker were found dead May fifteenth after
- 0:30Speaker 1: sheriff's deputies were called for a wellness check. They are
- 0:34Speaker 1: treating it as a murder suicide. For family friend Joe
- 0:39Speaker 1: Medeki eighty one, the shocking deaths came after months of
- 0:42Speaker 1: watching what she says was a destructive celebrity impersonation scam unfold.
- 0:48Speaker 1: She really thought it was Tom Selleck. Nobody could stop her.
- 0:53Speaker 1: According to Medeki, the scam began last summer through Facebook,
- 0:56Speaker 1: after Karen posted about the death of a friend from there.
- 1:00Speaker 1: An individual or group allegedly used details from Karen's profile
- 1:04Speaker 1: to build trust and gradually ask for money, starting with
- 1:07Speaker 1: a small gift card request, eventually escalating to thousands of dollars.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Her family cut up her credit cards, took her off
- 1:14Speaker 1: their accounts, but she still found ways to get money
- 1:17Speaker 1: and send it. We don't know what the final total is,
- 1:21Speaker 1: it's at least thirty thousand dollars. What happened to Karen
- 1:25Speaker 1: Whitaker reflects a scam trend that's becoming harder for families
- 1:28Speaker 1: to catch. Early celebrity impersonation scams are used to rely
- 1:32Speaker 1: on obvious, fake profiles and generic messages. Today, scammers are
- 1:36Speaker 1: increasingly using artificial intelligence to clone voices, create realistic photos,
- 1:41Speaker 1: even generate personalized video messages that can fool victims into
- 1:45Speaker 1: believing their interacting with someone famous. This is the situation
- 1:50Speaker 1: that Karen was caught in. At one point, the scammer
- 1:54Speaker 1: allegedly told Karen that Tom Sellek was planning an event
- 1:57Speaker 1: in California and promised she could be first on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: list if she sent eighty dollars.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Only eighty dollars. What a bargain they sneak in.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You know, friends had already sounded alarms. Medeki said she
- 2:10Speaker 1: reported the matter to authorities, prompting adult Protective service workers
- 2:14Speaker 1: to visit the couple's home month before the death. That's
- 2:17Speaker 1: also when Donald reportedly learned the full extent of what happened.
- 2:20Speaker 1: That was the last straw for Donald. That's the husband.
- 2:23Speaker 1: He was so embarrassed he couldn't believe she would ask
- 2:26Speaker 1: friends to participate in the scam. She also suspected Karen
- 2:30Speaker 1: may have been experiencing early cognitive decline, something scammers are
- 2:34Speaker 1: becoming increasingly skilled at exploiting. Oh so it's you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you think, how could you fall for this? But like
- 2:41Speaker 1: the AI stuff, if you get a video of Tom
- 2:43Speaker 1: Selex saying, Karen, you know we're we're buddies here and
- 2:47Speaker 1: I would love for you to send me. Oh no,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Tom Selex, my friend.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I was just talking with Chilimack about you yesterday.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Karen sad story. I have a different war.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Well, you know if Tom Selik would have said he
- 3:03Speaker 3: needed money after his or Verse mortgage ran out, Yeah, maybe, I.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Guess you want to believe you know that Tom Selik,
- 3:11Speaker 1: He's just such a nice guy. I'm sure sure I
- 3:14Speaker 1: think he likes me. Uh here's another morsel of murder. Okay,
- 3:20Speaker 1: a California firefighter who shot his fiancee and her son
- 3:25Speaker 1: during a disagreement over a movie, has been sentenced to
- 3:29Speaker 1: life in prison.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Well, finally, a good reason for murder.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Darren McFarlane, forty seven, received two consecutive life sentences without
- 3:35Speaker 1: parole for the murders of Melissa Herzog and her son Jojoe.
- 3:41Speaker 1: On August twenty first, twenty twenty five, Herzog and McFarlane,
- 3:44Speaker 1: who lived in Cameron Park, decided to watch the two
- 3:47Speaker 1: thousand and eight Christian theme film fire Proof Christian theme,
- 3:52Speaker 1: which centers on a firefighter with a troubled marriage.
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's what junkvizl.
- 3:57Speaker 1: However, the family viewing turned violent when m MacFarland became
- 4:01Speaker 1: upset with the portrayal of firefighters in the film and
- 4:04Speaker 1: stormed out. The matter escalated, I'm out of here. The
- 4:10Speaker 1: matter escalated when McFarlane had a heated argument with Herzog
- 4:13Speaker 1: about the film in their bedroom. He apparently wanted her
- 4:16Speaker 1: to accept that the firefighter's wife was at fault for
- 4:19Speaker 1: their troubled marriage and the movie fire Proof.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And if you do and if you don't do it,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I have no choice but to shoot you.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Soon the argument turned physical. Oh my hell. The woman
- 4:28Speaker 1: ran into the family room and told McFarland she was
- 4:31Speaker 1: going to report the domestic violence incident to police. She
- 4:34Speaker 1: called her father and told him. Her fiance was after her. Meanwhile,
- 4:39Speaker 1: McFarland was worried he would lose his job if he
- 4:42Speaker 1: was reported. He grabbed a loaded gun and followed her
- 4:45Speaker 1: into the family room and shot her.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, there he goes.
- 4:49Speaker 3: His gun's always, you know, make things a lot easier.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, if you got if you got one around, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But arguing over point the plot point of a Christian
- 5:02Speaker 1: firefighter film.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I mean.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It's totally understandable. It's totally understandable. These these things are
- 5:13Speaker 2: important and sometimes the only way you can settle whom
- 5:16Speaker 2: is by death.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with guy in the chat room. What
- 5:22Speaker 3: we're learning from this is the CBS needs to go
- 5:25Speaker 3: off the air because that's all the shows that they
- 5:27Speaker 3: that they run stuff like that.
- 5:29Speaker 2: They run a lot of it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah. So those are my two morsels, morsels of a murder.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I can't think of a movie plot point to argue about.
- 5:42Speaker 2: That would make you, that would make me that angry.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I just go, well, okay, you're wrong, but whatever.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Okay, So he was it's a movie. So he's a firefighter,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and he was mad about how firefighters will portrayed. Is
- 5:53Speaker 1: there a a a radio personality portrayal.
- 5:58Speaker 2: That would make you many Let let let's count how
- 6:01Speaker 2: many there are? I mean all of them?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Uh w k RP was pretty accurate, because I mean
- 6:10Speaker 3: he even cued up the records.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I'm not mad about that.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I'm not mad about that. What was the one with
- 6:18Speaker 2: Joe Rogan News Radios? That was just a comedy.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Frasier. Yeah, I'm listening.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I know.
- 6:29Speaker 3: There's just none of them that would make me angry
- 6:32Speaker 3: enough to argue with.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Sorry you, uh now, I when I was a young person,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I would fly into a blind rage over nothing. But
- 6:44Speaker 2: when you were a young person, yea.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Not anymore. You don't do that anymore.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I haven't done that for a long time. I mean,
- 6:51Speaker 2: I remember I my my brother Scott stole my peanut
- 6:55Speaker 2: butter sandwich, and so I kicked him through the glass
- 6:58Speaker 2: plate glass door.
- 6:59Speaker 1: That seems like a bit of an overreaction.
- 7:01Speaker 2: It was not a bit. It was a huge overreaction.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You just yes, it was horrible.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You could have just made another sandwich.
- 7:14Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, I know you see, Gina, this
- 7:18Speaker 2: is exactly the argument that we were having the other day.
- 7:22Speaker 2: You can give me any number of logical things that
- 7:27Speaker 2: should have gotten me out of that and him out
- 7:29Speaker 2: of that. But when it's blind rage, none of it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Just never felt that. I've never not.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I make it sound like it
- 7:39Speaker 2: happened a lot I have. I just I've experienced it
- 7:43Speaker 2: on occasion blind.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And the blind part of it, that's that's real. Like
- 7:48Speaker 1: you can't it's just it's.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Just a tunnel and you don't see any I mean,
- 7:54Speaker 2: you can give me ten logical things. Good, we could
- 7:56Speaker 2: have made another sandwich, you could.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You just don't there, it doesn't you don't see that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: No, I'm glad we came back to that because my
- 8:05Speaker 2: when I was trying to explain it the other day,
- 8:06Speaker 2: I wasn't good at it. But that's that's what blind
- 8:09Speaker 2: rage is.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And maybe do you just either have that or you
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think so.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Unfortunately, some people are afflicted with it a lot and
- 8:19Speaker 2: they end up, you know, in prison.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Well you see, I feel like you see a lot
- 8:23Speaker 1: online of people having that at the airport, like yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 1: either you know.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And road ragees is certainly that it's and I don't.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I've gotten to the point when I'm driving I almost
- 8:37Speaker 2: never even sort of mutter under my breath at dumb things.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Oh I I you you need to expect it.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I just you know, it's somebody cuts
- 8:47Speaker 2: in front of me and I go, okay, well it happens,
- 8:51Speaker 2: all right.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, if if, if you, if you get in your
- 8:55Speaker 3: car thinking I'm going to have a smooth drive today,
- 8:58Speaker 3: Nothing's gonna happen.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You're fool. You are a fool.
- 9:01Speaker 3: It should be all right. What idiot am I going
- 9:04Speaker 3: to encounter today? It's going to happen?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Or am I the idiot? I?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Sometimes I was? I was, I'm an excellent driver. I
- 9:16Speaker 2: was an idiot the other day and it kind of
- 9:19Speaker 2: made me mad that somebody pointed out my idiocy. I
- 9:23Speaker 2: was going down South Temple and I was going to
- 9:26Speaker 2: make a right turn up into the avenues. Well, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 2: there are a lot of one way streets and so
- 9:33Speaker 2: and so I signaled and pulled over to start going
- 9:37Speaker 2: up this street. That my my child pointed out, Dad,
- 9:41Speaker 2: you can't go up there. That's a one way. That's
- 9:42Speaker 2: a one way street. And I'm yeah, right. So, so
- 9:46Speaker 2: I was off to the side of the road in
- 9:49Speaker 2: the bike lane. Another car came past me and just
- 9:54Speaker 2: laid on the horn.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Like maybe they thought you didn't know you were going
- 9:59Speaker 1: the road.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Well, that I get, but although my my my child went,
- 10:03Speaker 2: what what was up with that? You were not in
- 10:05Speaker 2: you were out of the way, You're facing the wrong direction,
- 10:08Speaker 2: you were off. No, I wasn't facing the wrong direction.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I hadn't started to make a turn. I hadn't even
- 10:13Speaker 2: started to make the turn. I had just signaled to
- 10:15Speaker 2: pull as far as they knew. Maybe I was just
- 10:17Speaker 2: gonna pull over, but they just decided they were gonna
- 10:20Speaker 2: lay and it kind of started to make me mad,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but I thought, let it go. You know, I wasn't
- 10:27Speaker 2: in the way. I wasn't doing anything whatever.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I there's no rhyme nor reason to those one way
- 10:32Speaker 1: streets in the avenues.
- 10:33Speaker 2: That's well, yeah, some of.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Them go two ways, some of them are one way.
- 10:38Speaker 2: It's every it's except for that. There there are three
- 10:41Speaker 2: main ones to go both two way, and then then
- 10:45Speaker 2: they alternate.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I don't like it. There's a reason for it, to
- 10:49Speaker 1: you off, That's why I don't like it.
- 10:54Speaker 2: As I recall, it used to be second second Avenue.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Second went one way and third went the other way,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and then they turned them into two way.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's confusing,
