- 0:42Today we are back in the book of Georgian folk tales written down
- 0:44by Marjorie Wardrobe. In this story we hear the
- 0:48Georgian take on a classic fairy tale.
- 0:51OK, let's begin. Conquia Garuna.
- 0:56Georgian Cinderella. There was and there was not.
- 1:03There was a miserable peasant. He had a wife and a little
- 1:06daughter. So poor was this peasant that
- 1:09his daughter was called Conquia Garuna, the little girl in rags.
- 1:15Some time passed, and his wife died.
- 1:18He was unhappy before, but now a greater misfortune had befallen
- 1:22him. He grieved and grieved, and at
- 1:26last he said to himself, I will go and take another wife.
- 1:29She will mind the house and tend to my orphan child.
- 1:33So he arose and took a second wife.
- 1:36But this wife brought with her a daughter of her own.
- 1:40When this woman came into her husband's house and saw his
- 1:43child, she felt anger in her heart.
- 1:46She treated Konkia badly. She praised her own daughter,
- 1:49but scolded her stepdaughter and tried to get rid of her.
- 1:54Every day she gave her a burnt piece of bread and sent her out
- 1:57to watch the cow saying, Here is a loaf, eat it, give it to every
- 2:01wayfarer and bring the loaf home whole.
- 2:04The girl went out and felt very miserable.
- 2:09One time she was sitting in the field sad and began to weep
- 2:13bitterly. The cow listened and then opened
- 2:16its mouth and said, Why are you weeping?
- 2:21What troubles you? The girl told her sad tale.
- 2:26The cow said, In one of my horns is honey, and in the other is
- 2:31butter, which you can take if you want, so why be unhappy?
- 2:37The girl took the butter and the honey, and in a short time she
- 2:40grew plump. When the stepmother noticed
- 2:43this, she did not know what to do, for she was in such a rage.
- 2:48She got up, and every day after she gave her a basket of wool.
- 2:53This wool was to be spun and finished and brought home in the
- 2:55evening. The stepmother wished to tire
- 2:58the girl out with the toil so that she would grow thin and
- 3:01ugly. Once when Conchia was tending
- 3:04the cow, it ran away onto the roof.
- 3:07The girl pursued it and wished to drive it back onto the road,
- 3:10but she dropped her spindle on the roof.
- 3:14Looking inside, she saw an old woman seated and said to her.
- 3:17Good mother, will you give me my spindle?
- 3:21The old Dame replied, Ah, I am not able my child, come and take
- 3:28it yourself. This old woman was a Devi.
- 3:34The girl went in and was lifting up her spindle when the old Dame
- 3:38called out. Daughter, daughter, come and
- 3:42look at my head for a moment, I am almost eaten up.
- 3:49The girl came and looked at her head.
- 3:51She was filled with horror. All the worms on earth seem to
- 3:55be crawling there. The little girl stroked her head
- 3:59and removed some, and said, You have a clean head, why should I
- 4:03look at it? This conduct pleased the old
- 4:06woman very much, and she said, When you go out, go along such
- 4:13and such a road, and in a certain place you will see three
- 4:18springs, one white, one black, and 1 yellow.
- 4:26Pass by the white and black, and put your head in the yellow and
- 4:31wash it with your hands. The girl did this.
- 4:38She went on her way and came to the three springs.
- 4:42She passed by the white and black ones and bathed her head
- 4:45with her hands in the yellow fountain.
- 4:48When she looked up, she saw that her hair was quite golden too,
- 4:52and her hands too. They shone like gold.
- 4:57In the evening, when she went home, her stepmother was filled
- 5:00with fury. After this she sent her own
- 5:04daughter with the cow. Perhaps some good fortune would
- 5:06visit her. So Conchia stayed at home while
- 5:10her step sister drove out the cow.
- 5:13Once more the cow ran onto the roof.
- 5:16The girl pursued it and her spindle fell down.
- 5:19She looked in and seeing the Debbie woman called out, Hey,
- 5:23dog of an old woman here, come and give me my spindle.
- 5:28The old woman replied, I am not able child, come and take it
- 5:34yourself. When the girl came near, the old
- 5:37woman said, come child and look at my head.
- 5:43The girl came and looked at her head and cried out.
- 5:46Uh, what a horrid head you have. You're a disgusting old woman.
- 5:50The old woman said. I thank you my child.
- 5:55When you are on your way, you will see a yellow, a white, and
- 5:59a black spring. Pass by the yellow and white
- 6:03springs and wash your head with your hands in the black one.
- 6:09The girl did this. She passed by the yellow and
- 6:12white springs and bathed her head in the black one.
- 6:16When she looked at herself she was as black as midnight, and on
- 6:19her head there was a horn. She cut it off again and again,
- 6:24but it grew larger and larger. She went home and complained to
- 6:28her mother who was almost frenzied, but there was no help
- 6:31for it. Her mother said to herself, This
- 6:34is all the cows fault, so it shall be killed.
- 6:38This cow knew the future. When it learned that it was to
- 6:41be killed, it went to Conquia and said, When I am dead, gather
- 6:46my bones together and bury them in the earth.
- 6:50When you are in trouble, come to my grave and cry aloud.
- 6:54Bring my steed and my royal robes.
- 6:58Conquia Garuna did exactly as the cow had told her.
- 7:01When it was dead, she took its bones and buried them in the
- 7:04earth. After this some time passed 1
- 7:08holiday the stepmother took her daughter and they went to
- 7:11church. She placed a through in front of
- 7:13Conchia and spread a Cody about 80 lbs of Millet in the
- 7:17courtyard and said before we come home from church fill this
- 7:23through with tears and gather up this Millet so that not one
- 7:26grain is left. Then they went to church.
- 7:31Conchia sat down and began to weep.
- 7:34While she was crying a neighbor came in and said why are you in
- 7:37tears? What is the matter?
- 7:40The little girl told her tale. The woman brought all the hens
- 7:44and chickens, and they picked up every grain of Millet.
- 7:48Then she put a lump of salt in the through and poured water
- 7:50over it. There, child, she said, these
- 7:54are your tears, now go and enjoy yourself.
- 7:59Conquia then thought of the cow. She went to its grave and called
- 8:02out. Bring me my steed and my royal
- 8:05robes. There at once appeared a horse
- 8:08and beautiful clothes. Conchia put on the garments,
- 8:13mounted the horse and went into the church.
- 8:16There all the folk began to stare at her.
- 8:18They were amazed at her grandeur.
- 8:21Her step sister whispered to her mother when they saw her.
- 8:24This girl is very much like our Conchia.
- 8:27Her mother smiled scornfully and said, Who would give that sun
- 8:30darkener such robes? Conchia left the church before
- 8:35anyone else. She changed her clothes in time
- 8:38to appear before her stepmother in rags on the way home.
- 8:42As she was leaping over a stream.
- 8:44In her haste she let her slipper fall in.
- 8:47A long time passed. Once when the King's horses were
- 8:52drinking water in this stream, they saw the shining slipper,
- 8:55and they were so afraid that they would not drink any more
- 8:57water. The king was told that there was
- 9:00something shining in the stream, and that the horses were afraid.
- 9:06The king commanded his divers to find out what it was.
- 9:09They found the golden slipper, and presented it to the king.
- 9:12When he saw it, he commanded his viziers, saying, Go and seek the
- 9:16owner of this slipper, for I will wed none but her.
- 9:22His viziers sought the maiden, but they could not find anyone
- 9:25who would fit the slipper. Conky's stepmother heard this,
- 9:29adorned her daughter and placed her on the throne.
- 9:32Then she went and told the king that she had a daughter whose
- 9:35foot he might want to look at, as it was exactly the model for
- 9:38the shoe. She put Conquioruna in a corner
- 9:42with a big basket over her. When the king came into the
- 9:45house, he sat down on the basket in order to try on the slipper.
- 9:49Conquia Garuna took the needle and pricked the king from under
- 9:52the basket. He jumped up, stinging with
- 9:55pain, and asked the stepmother what she had under the basket.
- 9:58The stepmother replied, Tis only a Turkey I have there.
- 10:02The king sat down on the basket again, and Conquia again stuck
- 10:06the needle into him. The king jumped up and cried
- 10:09out, Lift the basket, I will see what's underneath.
- 10:15The stepmother entreated him, saying, Do not blame me, your
- 10:18majesty, it's only a Turkey and it will run away.
- 10:22But the king would not listen to her entreaties.
- 10:24He lifted up the basket and Conquia came forth and said,
- 10:28This slipper is mine, and it fits me well.
- 10:32She sat down and the king found that it was indeed a perfect
- 10:35fit. Conquia Garuna became the King's
- 10:38wife, and her shameless stepmother was left with a dry
- 10:41throat. The end.
- 11:05Well, I like this version. I especially like that the
- 11:08stepmother wasn't left with any, you know, pain or wasn't killed
- 11:11or hurt or anything, just left with a dry throat.
- 11:13It's like, oh, that's good revenge.
- 11:16And of course it has some similarities with the more
- 11:18famous Grimmes Brothers tale, but it also had some stuff
- 11:21that's usually seen in Turkish or Middle Eastern cultures like
- 11:24the Devi. I'm really enjoying this book
- 11:27and I hope that you are too. And the podcast shout out today
- 11:31is to the Derazzled podcast. Jack and Joe climb that hill of
- 11:35bad movies to fetch a pail of something redeemable.
- 11:39They try their best to take a movie that won a Razzie and find
- 11:42something good about it, or at least how they can fix it.
- 11:45So wouldn't win a Razzie. And if you like their show as
- 11:47much as I do, go and give them a like a rating and a review.
- 11:53And the listener shout out is to Morogoro, a city located in the
- 11:57eastern part of Tanzania, approximately 196 kilometers
- 12:00West of Dar es Salaam. It serves as the capital of the
- 12:04Morogoro region. Informally, it is referred to as
- 12:08Mikasoro Bahari, which translates to the city short of
- 12:12an ocean slash port. It is the homeland of the Lugoru
- 12:16people and they are matrilineal group of Bantu speakers.
- 12:19I could not find translations of my sign off in their language.
- 12:22So I will do it in Swahili. And of course I would love to go
- 12:26there and visit there, if for nothing else than to find their
- 12:29rat training program to find minds in tuberculosis.
- 12:32So to my listener who might be training the next mind finding
- 12:35rat, I say in Swahili Asante and Musiko Muema, thank you and
- 12:42goodnight.
