Latest / Life Lived Better / Mental Health Moment - Perfection becomes Procrastination
Transcript
- 0:09Hello there. Welcome to another mental health
- 0:11moment from the Life Live Better podcast.
- 0:14This is the place where we take just a couple of moments to care
- 0:17for our minds. I'm Paula, and today we're
- 0:19talking about something that often hides behind achievement,
- 0:22high standards, and the desire to do things right.
- 0:27That's perfectionism. Perfectionism can look admirable
- 0:31on the outside. It can wear the disguise of
- 0:34ambition and discipline or excellence.
- 0:37But internally it often carries a much heavier price.
- 0:42Here's an important truth. Perfectionism is not the same as
- 0:46healthy striving. Healthy striving says I want to
- 0:50do well, but perfectionism says anything less than flawless is a
- 0:56failure. And that difference matters
- 1:00because perfectionism rarely produces satisfaction.
- 1:04Instead, it fuels anxiety, self criticism, chronic stress, and
- 1:09the persistent feeling of never being good enough.
- 1:13Perfectionism raises the bar endlessly.
- 1:18No matter how much you accomplish, there's always
- 1:21something that could have been better, could have been cleaner,
- 1:24smarter, more impressive. So that finish line just keeps
- 1:28moving. And the cost of that is mental
- 1:32exhaustion. Procrastination is driven by
- 1:36fear of imperfection, difficulty enjoying success, or a
- 1:40reluctance to try new things. Often you might have a harsh
- 1:45inner dialogue that no achievement will be able to
- 1:49quiet. And ironically, perfectionism
- 1:52doesn't just create pressure, it can actually limit growth.
- 1:57When mistakes become intolerable, then learning
- 2:00becomes threatening. When vulnerability feels unsafe,
- 2:04creativity and risk taking just shrink.
- 2:07So what's the alternative? It's not lowering your standards
- 2:11or abandoning effort, but it's allowing space for something
- 2:15that is deeply human. And that's imperfection.
- 2:19Progress instead of perfection. Flexibility instead of rigidity.
- 2:24Self compassion instead of relentless judgment.
- 2:30Because excellence can coexist with kindness and growth can
- 2:34coexist with mistakes. And good enough is so much
- 2:38healthier than never enough. So here's a gentle reflection
- 2:43for today. Where might perfectionism be
- 2:47adding stress rather than value in your life?
- 2:51What might change if you allowed yourself to be capable but not
- 2:54flawless? Well, if you find yourself a
- 2:57procrastinator, stay tuned. In our next mental health
- 3:00moment, we'll discuss how to change procrastination.
