Latest / The Craig Way Show / West Virginia HC Neal Brown on tough start: "Did they have a good time?"
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We get into our number three today, we've already had
- 0:04earlier in the show, you heard from Jerry Jones, the
- 0:08Cowboys owner and GM getting a little bit irritated at
- 0:13his local radio show. And it is at this time
- 0:18of year, would you not agree, Cameron, that we see
- 0:22not only coach dismissals like what happened with Robert Salabing,
- 0:28you know, sent packing by the New York Jets and
- 0:33then they ended up losing their debut without him last night.
- 0:37But this is where the criticism heightens of head coaches
- 0:45of teams, no matter what level of football we're talking about,
- 0:49Pro football, college football, high school football, doesn't matter. This
- 0:54is where if you get to mid season and the
- 0:56team is not performing to certainly the coach and player expectation,
- 1:02but usually it's the fan expectation that heightens all this,
- 1:06so things get a little bit exacerbated.
- 1:09Speaker 2: You're about a third of the way through the NFL season,
- 1:11close to about halfway through the college football season. You
- 1:15have a large enough sample size to know either if
- 1:17your team's a contender or not a contender. You can
- 1:20kind of weed out who's good and who's not. And
- 1:23a lot of those fan bases can are Smarten the
- 1:25figure out maybe this coach is not the right coach.
- 1:27We saw it with the Jets and Robert Sala. I
- 1:30think we're gonna see it with the Jaguars and Doug Peterson.
- 1:33I wonder if Jacksonville's gonna leave him in London after
- 1:37their next London home game. And of course you wonder
- 1:40what's gonna happen with Cleveland and Stefanski and the Shaun
- 1:42Watson of course to Marii Cooper news him being traded out.
- 1:45And then you have the Dallas Cowboys who have a
- 1:49bye week this week. Usually, if you're gonna fire a
- 1:51coach in the middle of the season, you tend to
- 1:53do it during a bye week so you can get
- 1:55someone else in there and give you yourself about two
- 1:58weeks to kind of get the new game plan and
- 2:00the new staff and and all that. But Jerry Jones
- 2:02is Jerry Jones, very hard headed. But Craig, I mean,
- 2:05we talked about it yesterday that the next five games
- 2:08for the Cowboys is a very brutal, brutal schedule San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Washington.
- 2:15If you lose those five games, I wonder if we're
- 2:18gonna see what happened to Wade Phillips and was a
- 2:20nine to eight when he got fired.
- 2:21Speaker 1: After that one in twenty ten? Wasn't it twenty ten
- 2:24when they started one in seven?
- 2:26Speaker 2: One in seven? I mean, there's a chance Dallas is
- 2:28three and eight. Yeah, but at that point, at three
- 2:32and eight, you are already out of the playoffs. So
- 2:34by then it'll be too little, too late. But it
- 2:37was too little too late when Week one started for
- 2:39the Cowboys.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Okay, so you realize that what you just described, and
- 2:43you did it in really good detail, was uncomfortable positions
- 2:49for coaches and teams just in the NFL. What you
- 2:54just described as the NFL. What we know to be
- 2:56true is this happens everywhere college high school football. Even
- 3:01trust me, I'm around the high school game enough with
- 3:04the Friday Night Show and the other things that I do.
- 3:06When fans start grumbling about a high school team that
- 3:09they think should be performing at a higher level, heaven forbid,
- 3:12But that does happen. Then, Like I said, there's the
- 3:14college level, there's grumbling. There's grumbling into Oklahoma this week.
- 3:20There there's grumbling in other sec parts. There's grumbling in Columbus,
- 3:26Ohio this week, there's go there's grumbling in southern California.
- 3:31So there's grumbling that goes on, and then there's a
- 3:34different kind of grumbling that's going on at West Virginia.
- 3:37Have you heard about this? This is a This is
- 3:39a pretty interesting story West Virginia because they had the
- 3:46big rush toward the end of the year and did
- 3:48really well down the stretch, uh and and made it
- 3:52to a bowl game. Supposedly, quote unquote, Neil Brown, the
- 3:55head coach, was to use that term off the hot seat.
- 4:00A lot of excitement about the Mountaineers going into this year,
- 4:04but they're three and three now, and that was after
- 4:09Saturday night's home loss to Iowa State. Now it doesn't
- 4:11matter that Iowa State is number nine in the country
- 4:13and undefeated. It's home loss actually televised gay So folks
- 4:18are getting kind of antsy and grumbling. And then it
- 4:26got exacerbated because I've heard coaches try to placate the
- 4:37fan base, calm down the fan base, reassure the fan
- 4:43base with stuff, but comments like these probably don't help.
- 4:50Now I'm going to read you these comments from Neil Brown,
- 4:53and I want you to tell me how well they
- 4:55would go over in Austin, Texas, or College Station Texas,
- 5:00or Norman, Oklahoma, or several other places like that. Okay,
- 5:05he was talking about somebody asked him if he had
- 5:08a message for fans who are upset with their performance
- 5:13this year. Here's his quote. I get that they want
- 5:15to win, But what I would say is did they
- 5:18have a good time? Did they enjoy it? It was
- 5:21a pretty good atmosphere, you know. I'm assuming they probably
- 5:23had a good time tailgating. So if they're in the
- 5:26deal for enjoyment, then I would come back. I looked
- 5:29at the weather, it's gonna be nice again. It's a
- 5:32night game, and we need them to provide a home
- 5:34field advantage. How do you think that would go over
- 5:38in Austin, Texas? If the team were struggling in Sart
- 5:41and said, hey, do you have a good time of
- 5:42the game. Do you have a good time tailgating? Hey,
- 5:45weather's good? Come on back, how do you think that
- 5:50would go over here? Or College Station or Norman, Oklahoma,
- 5:55or you know lots of places like that, Columbus, Ohio,
- 5:58all those places I just mentioned.
- 6:00Speaker 2: The message boards would burn down.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Well, that's pretty much.
- 6:03Speaker 2: What's happened that the servers could not withstand the pout
- 6:07of turmoil to the message boards would cost it. I mean,
- 6:09Neil Brown read the room, buddy. I mean last season
- 6:12he went in on the hot seat already in West Virginia,
- 6:16had a fantastic twenty twenty three, and so a lot
- 6:19of hopes coming into this season. And they lost to
- 6:22an Iowa State team that might be the best group
- 6:24of five teams. They lost to a Penn State team
- 6:25that's currently ranked number four, and lost to a pit
- 6:28team that's not too bad. So they're not an awful team.
- 6:31But as a power for head coach, you're asking, did
- 6:36you have a good time dining camping? Didn't go camping?
- 6:40You played a college football game?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Neil Brown, so fans responded angrily, He actually said this.
- 6:47He actually said this after the game. Okay, So then
- 6:52at his news conference he got asked about it. Did
- 6:55you mean to say and and so on and so
- 7:00for and so then the reporter who asked a question
- 7:05Monday to post on social media that he honestly didn't
- 7:08plan to stir anything up. I thought it was a
- 7:11simple question. And so he also said, hey, we have
- 7:15a tough schedule, and the three teams that have beaten
- 7:19West Virginia the season are all undefeated, and I think
- 7:23those are what Pitt, Penn State and Iowa State good teams, right,
- 7:27he said quote That's not an excuse, it's just the truth.
- 7:30The games in our league are going to come down
- 7:31to the fourth quarter, and I don't think this one
- 7:33on Saturday is going to be any different. So we
- 7:36need the fans to help us. I do get their frustration,
- 7:40but I don't think when you watch our product, I
- 7:43don't think the product is something that they should be
- 7:46other than the outcome. It was an entertaining football game.
- 7:50If you're a football fan and just watching that, it's
- 7:52pretty entertaining. We just didn't play well enough to win.
- 7:55So I would hope with that in mind, they would
- 7:57come back for another entertaining game that hopefully we can
- 8:00play better at the end and win. Good football. I
- 8:06know we didn't win, but good football.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Imagine Defendable said that on Saturday.
- 8:11Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying, so.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Olthough, I think that I think your fans had fun
- 8:18of the State Fair.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Did you get did you guys get a corn dog,
- 8:22corn Dog, You did you? Did you ride the Texas Star?
- 8:27Did you have a good time?
- 8:29Speaker 2: And there's some statements that will travel with the coach
- 8:31for the rest of their life. You know, good things,
- 8:34bad things.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I always think about Tom Herman and winning his hard
- 8:37You as any Texas fan there, you got what's the
- 8:39most famous thing Tom Herman said? Winning his heart? That
- 8:42and okay cool hook him? The two things in for
- 8:45Tom Herman. He's probably he's a great, fantastic he's a
- 8:47great football mind, but he's always going to have that
- 8:50attached to him. Now, Neil Brown, did you have fun?
- 8:53Did you always be associated with Neil Well?
- 8:56Speaker 1: And and and if we're being real here, Herman's okay
- 9:02cool hook him. A lot of fans like that.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so positive, Yeah, positive that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Okay, swinning is hard. Yeah, that didn't go over too well.
- 9:10It was that all right? Anyway, coming up, we're gonna
- 9:14hear from Quinn rs Long, Orange quarterback coming off of
- 9:18the win on Saturday, where Quinn was being if we're
- 9:22being honest, said I didn't play my best, but my
- 9:26teammates picked me up. I hope I turned that back around.
- 9:29So that's coming up when we continue here on this
- 9:31Tuesday afternoon on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone
- 9:34of the iHeartRadio app.
