- 0:12Hello, friends. It is shown here and it is so
- 0:17good that you and I have in this post Easter glow can continue on
- 0:24with our tradition of reading, a chapter of the Bible, each day,
- 0:28and we have Josh, I worked our way through the wonderful Gospel
- 0:32of Luke and now we are going to read through a quick-fire trio
- 0:37of books written by John Jesus disciple.
- 0:42John this is first second. And third John, which we are
- 0:45going to be reading this week and next week.
- 0:49Now, when you start to hear the writing of John, it's like we're
- 0:52back in familiar territory. It's so similar to the way that
- 0:56his gospel is written except he's not Thing to tell us the
- 1:00life of Jesus this time he is riding to help a church who are
- 1:05being challenged by number of false teachings, false teachings
- 1:09in the form of gnosticism that was another prominent thought of
- 1:13the day, that elevated knowledge, above everything
- 1:17else. And to be saved, you didn't have
- 1:18to be saved by Jesus death and Resurrection.
- 1:20You had to be saved by having the correct knowledge and that
- 1:23would do it for you. And so, he's going to push back
- 1:26against this and other Pagan teachings.
- 1:30And teachings from the Roman world that they lived in by just
- 1:33reiterating. The central themes that will be
- 1:36familiar to us from his gospel. That Jesus is indeed the Messiah
- 1:40that God is light, that God is love and that they have all the
- 1:45knowledge that they need. So as we come back to that world
- 1:51that Jesus lived in just afterwards, when his beloved
- 1:55disciple, John writes to his friends, to convince them of the
- 1:58truth, we get to be right there with him and the front row seats
- 2:03to hear what he has to say. So join me without further Ado,
- 2:06let us read together. First John, chapter 1,
- 2:22We Proclaim to you, the one who existed from the beginning whom
- 2:26we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and
- 2:31touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of Life.
- 2:36This one who is life itself was revealed to us and we have seen
- 2:41him. And now we testify and Proclaim
- 2:44to you, that he is the one who is eternal life.
- 2:50He was with the father and then he was revealed to us.
- 2:55We Proclaim to you, what? We ourselves have actually seen
- 2:59and heard so that you may have fellowship with us.
- 3:03And our fellowship is with the father and with his son Jesus
- 3:08Christ, we are writing these things so that you may fully
- 3:12share our joy. This is the message we heard
- 3:16from Jesus and now declare to you, God is light and there is
- 3:22no darkness in him at all. So, we are lying.
- 3:26If we say, we have fellowship with God, but go on living in
- 3:29spiritual Darkness, we are not practicing the truth, but if we
- 3:34are living in the light as God is in the light, then we have
- 3:38fellowship with each other and the blood of Jesus, his son
- 3:43cleanses us from All sin. If we claim, we have no sin, we
- 3:50are only filling ourselves are not living in the truth.
- 3:54But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful.
- 3:58And just to forgive us, our sins and to cleanse us from all
- 4:02wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned,
- 4:06we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no
- 4:11place in our hearts. Lord, thank you for the
- 4:26apostles. Thank you for John.
- 4:29Thank you that he was able to write so boldly not just about
- 4:32things that he'd heard that about a life lived with you
- 4:36seeing you hearing you and living alongside you.
- 4:40Thank you. That these documents have been
- 4:44preserved for us to read together, today to continue to
- 4:49hear about you. Jesus and to learn what you were
- 4:52like and that you are light and that you shine into the darkness
- 4:59Jesus. I pray for all those dark
- 5:01corners of our lives and a filled with doubt and shame and
- 5:07hopelessness. Jesus Shine Your resurrected
- 5:12light into those corners of our souls, fill us with your
- 5:17presence so that we can live in your truth.
- 5:22That when we mess up, we can bring that to you and know that
- 5:27you are just and kind and forgiving you are the best.
- 5:35We're so grateful for Easter. We're so grateful for your
- 5:38resurrection and we are so grateful.
- 5:40Advil. Now here you are loving us.
- 5:44We just come before you and praise you, and it's in your
- 5:47name that we pray, Jesus. Amen.
